1 Samuel 2:22-4:22, John 5:24-47, Psalm 106:1-12, Proverbs 14:30-31

Today is the eighth day of May, welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I’m Brian, it’s great to be here with you today as we gather, yet again, around the Global Campfire, and move forward together. We have transitioned into the Book of First Samuel and so, we’re taking that journey now and learning about Samuel and his life and how he became the final judge of Israel. And then, before were done with…with First Samuel, we will be introduced to Israel’s first king, but that’s a little bit later in Samuel. Right now, we are learning about his life. And so, let’s dive in, we’re reading from the New English Translation this week, First Samuel chapter 2 verse 22 through 4 verse 22.

Commentary:

Today, okay so, in the book of First Samuel today, we now get a pretty good glimpse of how Samuel grew up and how he would become a leader. So, we knew about his mom Hannah and her dedication to the Lord and her prayers for Samuel in her dedication of Samuel to the Lord so that he would be raised at the Tabernacle in Shiloh, under the high priest Eli. So, we watch that all happen. We also learned about Eli, his sons Hophni and Phineas, and the kinds of goings-on that they were involved in, and that it was evil in the Lord site. And so, the first prophetic word that Samuel receives is about judgment on the high priest’s house, which we subsequently saw happen. The children of Israel went into battle with the Philistines, they were losing, they got the ark of the covenant, along with Hophni and Phineas to kind of guard it. The ark was captured by the Philistines, Hophni and Phineas were killed, the Israelite army was routed, and they’ve all fled the Philistines. Word got back to Shiloh, the high priest Eli was waiting, he was a big man. He was an older man and a heavy man and when he got the news about his sons and then that the ark of the covenant had been lost, he fell over and broke his neck and died. And we will see Samuel leading forward.

Then we flip over into the Gospel of John and Jesus says a couple of really important things today. The first one really encapsulates the Gospel from the lips of the Savior, in one sentence. I tell you the solemn truth, the one who hears my message and believes the one who sent me, has eternal life and will not be condemned, but has crossed over from death to life. That is the good news, that those of us who hear Jesus words and believe in the God who sent his Son, will not be condemned for sin, like ever. That is good news, that is what we are to be living in our lives as believers and that is what we are to be revealing through our thoughts, words and deeds into this world. So, Jesus is saying this to the elite scholars of the time, the teachers of religious law, the scribes, the Pharisees who have been antagonistic toward Him and he says another thing directly to them that is poignant. And so, I quote Jesus, “you study the Scriptures thoroughly because you think in them you possess eternal life and it is these same Scriptures that testify about me, but you are not willing to come to me, so that you may have life. So, what is Jesus saying here? You can’t hold God in your mind, nor can you figure Him out on your own, in your own understanding, you can pour over the Scriptures and turn them into your own idle thinking that your faith in those Scriptures is what will bring you eternal life. We can do the dance and jump through the hoops and do everything that we think that we know, short of actually coming to Jesus. When it is the Scriptures introduce us to Jesus, but through faith we step into that relationship. A relationship informed by the Scriptures, but a relationship that becomes a dynamic part of our lives. Think of it like this. If you have a spouse and I know everybody doesn’t have a spouse, but we know what a spouse is. And so, imagine that you can have a book delivered to you, that is the book of your spouse and it's…it’s all the details. Maybe it’s even bigger than the Bible. It’s all the childhood details. It’s all the adolescent details, it’s all the college years, it’s all the young adulthood, it’s all that exists and its thorough and it’s full and you study this book. That wouldn’t be the same as being in a relationship with the person that the book is about. And so, once again, we get clues to what God is like, through Jesus, by understanding that it is relationship, it is. And we are made this way, we are made for relationship, and it is a relationship that God seeks because this is what He is like. And please don’t get me wrong here. There is no way that I’m saying that the Scriptures aren’t valuable in our lives, they’ve changed my life utterly and that is why every day we are coming around the Global Campfire to take the next step forward. The Bible teaches us so much about God, but it teaches us so much about ourselves. And one of the things that the Bible is showing us today, from the lips of Jesus, is that relationship with God is not only possible but necessary. And a relationship doesn’t boil down to scholarship about the one with whom you are in love and the Scriptures reveal what God is like and who He is that we might love Him. And so, that gives us some things to think about today in terms of our relationship, that we, we’re trying to study from a distance the subject that we want to become an expert in or are we trying to learn what we need to know that we might step into a first-person, always on, never off, actual relationship.

Prayer:

Father, even as we contemplate that, we must begin by, by just acknowledging that that You would even want to be in a relationship with us is a remarkable thing, that is goodness beyond words. We don’t deserve this, that the God of all, that the Most High, even has an awareness of who we are, is mind blowing. And that this most high God, who knows who we are and knows our names and sees us, would like to guide us through life on an adventure called a relationship in such a way where you get to show us the hidden things in this world, that we get to be on mission and on adventure with you to enjoy your creation and to enjoy our brothers and sisters and to reveal You. This is good news. Help this good news sink into the soil of our hearts, yielding the fruit of the spirit necessary for us to navigate this life revealing You to our brothers and sisters around us. Come, Holy Spirit, we pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.

Announcements:

dailyaudiobible.com is home base, that’s the website, that’s where you can find out what’s going on around here. So, certainly check that out. Check out the resources that are in the Daily Audio Bible Shop. I probably should mention the resource, the book called Reframe: From the God We’ve Made, To God With Us, which is a bit of a deeper dive on what we were just now talking about with relationship and invitation and Jesus. Because frankly, my brothers and sisters, I am a thinker and so by default if I could, I would hold God in my mind. It’s just that my mind cannot contain anywhere near. And so, I began to ask myself, ask the Lord these questions, what does it even mean to be in a relationship with You? What is that even look like? What shape does that even take in our lives? How do we live in it? How do we grow in it? So, I had the opportunity to write some of that stuff down and that can be found in Reframe, and so, check that out.

Prayer and Encouragements:

Hello, DABers, this is Brandon from Texas and I want to pray for all the incarcerated DABers. And Lord, I just ask that You be with these men and women, and I ask for Your blessing on them, I ask for Your peace on them. And Lord, I ask that You grant them favor with You, favor amongst the guards, the prison officials, the prison employees and the other inmates, Lord. And I ask that Your love and wisdom, flowing through them, would flow through in such a powerful way that it would draw others in, Lord. And I just ask that You’d bring revival through these men and women. And just bring revival that starts behind the walls of those prisons and flows out through the entire country, Lord. And just ask for Your protection on these men and women and that Your hand just be on them, Lord. It’s in the name of Jesus I pray.

Hi, my name is Mary. I’m calling in for a sister who called on May 2nd. And I’m just calling to encourage you and to pray for you, pray with you, dear sister. And you did not leave your name, but you did mention that you’re 65, completely lost and just at your wits end because you just don’t know what to pray for anymore. And the very fact that you called in is, in itself, crying out for help. That is, you, asking for help. So, don’t know about not knowing what to say, sis. Jesus knows what you need. Please pray with me. Father God, it is Jesus name I come before You, along with my brothers and sisters, to ask that Your truth, wisdom and love, meet our sister and her state of uncertainty. Lord, I ask that You send her the reassurance as she needs it. Let Your presence be known to her and let her be guided through this trial that she’s facing. May Your love and Your grace reach her even where she is. And as she seeks Lord, I’m sure she shall find. I just pray that Your love and Your grace will meet her, and we will continue to pray for her and her peace of mind. Dear sister, you are going to be okay. May your tears be dried by the Lord, Jesus Christ. Be encouraged, be encouraged really. You know this is going to pass through. I’m so sorry that you’re going through this but I’m also so sure that the Lord will send you answers. Be encouraged. Love you.

Good morning, family, this is Christine from North Carolina. It is May 2nd, and this is somewhat of a impromptu prayer request in that, I wasn’t expecting to call and ask for prayer about this. But it is definitely something that I’ve been needing to ask for prayer about for quite a while. So, just a little context about me. I’m a mom of 5 and new to the faith. I’ve called in, I believe, once before. So, my voice might be familiar but about a year and a half, I think is when I first accepting Jesus into my life and my heart. And so, I wasn’t raised with any sort of religious context, background, anything. So, everything is just very new and I’m just starting to just become more and more aware and wanting to implement the power of prayer in my daily life. So, here goes. And as a community as well, I know how important it is to lift each other up. So, specifically I’m asking for prayer with my relationship, my marriage, my relationship with my husband. And for prayer around not falling back into old habits that are destructive to our marriage. I’m learning fresh about how to be a godly wife. Having to tear down years of feminism, contextual thinking and my husband is also not walking with Jesus. So, that makes things complicated. Sometimes I get stuck in a self-righteous place and often times my anger can be that. So, thank you for your prayers. Bye.

Good morning, everybody, this is God’s Smile here. This has been going through my heart for the last couple of hours and I feel strongly that I should call it in. I want to pray for those people who listen. Those people who are lonely. Those people who are, for whatever reason, cannot call in, whether they’re fearful of responses or being judged or worried about how they’d be perceived or misunderstood. People who are lonely in life, in the church, in their family, in sickness and in pain. Father God, You see, You hold and I would, oh Lord, pain is an awful enemy of any sort. And I would ask Lord, that Your Holy Spirit, would flow through. This community, to those who are listening who need a friend, who need a gentle arm around their shoulders, who need a hug and a smile. And Father, allow this community to be that to them. Father, we pray for them, and we hold them and we ask, Lord, that Your will be done, and Your kingdom come, into their lives, as it is in heaven. Father, encourage them this day, this week, this year, that they may call in and just share what the Lord has done in response to His love and His grace and mercy. And time is ticking away. Kiss, kiss.

I’m Kurt and I’m calling to pray for the woman that called in, I don’t believe she left her name, but she did say she was 65 years old and didn’t know what to do. Needed help but didn’t know what to do or where to turn. So, I’m just gonna lift you up right now. I thank You, Holy Ghost, that You remind her, You show her, that You are her helper, You are her comforter, just as You said Jesus in John 16, 15, 16, 17 that You would send the helper, that You would send the comforter, or the Message Translation says You would send the friend to come. He comes along side us; He goes before us. So, I thank You, whoever you are, lady, that you receive the Holy Ghost as your helper, as your comforter, as your guide. He comes along beside you; He goes before you. To receive Him, cause He’s the only one that can truly help you. And remember that Jesus loves you more than anything in the creation. You are His favorite. You are His favorite. So, just remember that. Ask Him to show you, ask Him to guide you and He will. Thank you in Jesus name. Amen.

Good morning, DABers. Today’s May 2nd, 2023. This is Alyssa Marie Proverbs 31 Woman. I heard a woman coming on there on May 2nd her prayer request was played, and she is in much distress. She is at the end of herself. She didn’t say her name, she’s 65, she doesn’t have any parents, no children. She’s tired of doing things on her own, she spoke about pride and I immediately, my heart went out to you, sister. I don’t know who you are, but God knows you, God is hearing you, God see’s you and He wants you to look up to Him. Look up to the hills where your help comes from, Psalms 121. Your help comes from the Lord, the maker of heaven and earth. He will not allow you to slip and fall. Run to Him, run to the word. Your answers are found in Jesus. I was once where you are at and many years ago. I’m now 62 but God came to my rescue, and He turned my life around. And so, He can do the same thing for you, sister. So, read Psalms 121, Isaiah 54 came to mind because in there, God taught me that He is my maker, for He is my maker, my husband, the Lord Almighty is His name. That’s Isaiah 54:5. And so, I started, I immediately started praying for you, covering you with the blood of Jesus. I’m asking Holy Spirit, to lead you to a good body of believers that will be able to instruct you in the word of the Lord and in the ways of Jesus and I’m asking that God will bring you a godly woman whose heart can instruct you and be by your side during this time. There is hope. A lot of people are praying for you. And so, just surrender, surrender it all because we cannot do it on our own. Surrender it all. Sister, in Jesus mighty name. Amen.

The Daily Audio Bible Reading for Monday May 8, 2023 (NIV)

1 Samuel 2:22-4

22 Now Eli, who was very old, heard about everything(A) his sons were doing to all Israel and how they slept with the women(B) who served at the entrance to the tent of meeting. 23 So he said to them, “Why do you do such things? I hear from all the people about these wicked deeds of yours. 24 No, my sons; the report I hear spreading among the Lord’s people is not good. 25 If one person sins against another, God[a] may mediate for the offender; but if anyone sins against the Lord, who will(C) intercede(D) for them?” His sons, however, did not listen to their father’s rebuke, for it was the Lord’s will to put them to death.

26 And the boy Samuel continued to grow(E) in stature and in favor with the Lord and with people.(F)

Prophecy Against the House of Eli

27 Now a man of God(G) came to Eli and said to him, “This is what the Lord says: ‘Did I not clearly reveal myself to your ancestor’s family when they were in Egypt under Pharaoh? 28 I chose(H) your ancestor out of all the tribes of Israel to be my priest, to go up to my altar, to burn incense,(I) and to wear an ephod(J) in my presence. I also gave your ancestor’s family all the food offerings(K) presented by the Israelites. 29 Why do you[b] scorn my sacrifice and offering(L) that I prescribed for my dwelling?(M) Why do you honor your sons more than me by fattening yourselves on the choice parts of every offering made by my people Israel?’

30 “Therefore the Lord, the God of Israel, declares: ‘I promised that members of your family would minister before me forever.(N)’ But now the Lord declares: ‘Far be it from me! Those who honor me I will honor,(O) but those who despise(P) me will be disdained.(Q) 31 The time is coming when I will cut short your strength and the strength of your priestly house, so that no one in it will reach old age,(R) 32 and you will see distress(S) in my dwelling. Although good will be done to Israel, no one in your family line will ever reach old age.(T) 33 Every one of you that I do not cut off from serving at my altar I will spare only to destroy your sight and sap your strength, and all your descendants(U) will die in the prime of life.

34 “‘And what happens to your two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, will be a sign(V) to you—they will both die(W) on the same day.(X) 35 I will raise up for myself a faithful priest,(Y) who will do according to what is in my heart and mind. I will firmly establish his priestly house, and they will minister before my anointed(Z) one always. 36 Then everyone left in your family line will come and bow down before him for a piece of silver and a loaf of bread and plead,(AA) “Appoint me to some priestly office so I can have food to eat.(AB)”’”

The Lord Calls Samuel

The boy Samuel ministered(AC) before the Lord under Eli. In those days the word of the Lord was rare;(AD) there were not many visions.(AE)

One night Eli, whose eyes(AF) were becoming so weak that he could barely see,(AG) was lying down in his usual place. The lamp(AH) of God had not yet gone out, and Samuel was lying down in the house(AI) of the Lord, where the ark(AJ) of God was. Then the Lord called Samuel.

Samuel answered, “Here I am.(AK) And he ran to Eli and said, “Here I am; you called me.”

But Eli said, “I did not call; go back and lie down.” So he went and lay down.

Again the Lord called, “Samuel!” And Samuel got up and went to Eli and said, “Here I am; you called me.”

“My son,” Eli said, “I did not call; go back and lie down.”

Now Samuel did not yet know(AL) the Lord: The word(AM) of the Lord had not yet been revealed(AN) to him.

A third time the Lord called, “Samuel!” And Samuel got up and went to Eli and said, “Here I am; you called me.”

Then Eli realized that the Lord was calling the boy. So Eli told Samuel, “Go and lie down, and if he calls you, say, ‘Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.’” So Samuel went and lay down in his place.

10 The Lord came and stood there, calling as at the other times, “Samuel! Samuel!(AO)

Then Samuel said, “Speak, for your servant is listening.”

11 And the Lord said to Samuel: “See, I am about to do something in Israel that will make the ears of everyone who hears about it tingle.(AP) 12 At that time I will carry out against Eli everything(AQ) I spoke against his family—from beginning to end. 13 For I told him that I would judge his family forever because of the sin he knew about; his sons blasphemed God,[c] and he failed to restrain(AR) them. 14 Therefore I swore to the house of Eli, ‘The guilt of Eli’s house will never be atoned(AS) for by sacrifice or offering.’”

15 Samuel lay down until morning and then opened the doors of the house of the Lord. He was afraid to tell Eli the vision, 16 but Eli called him and said, “Samuel, my son.”

Samuel answered, “Here I am.”

17 “What was it he said to you?” Eli asked. “Do not hide(AT) it from me. May God deal with you, be it ever so severely,(AU) if you hide from me anything he told you.” 18 So Samuel told him everything, hiding nothing from him. Then Eli said, “He is the Lord; let him do what is good in his eyes.”(AV)

19 The Lord was with(AW) Samuel as he grew(AX) up, and he let none(AY) of Samuel’s words fall to the ground. 20 And all Israel from Dan to Beersheba(AZ) recognized that Samuel was attested as a prophet of the Lord.(BA) 21 The Lord continued to appear at Shiloh, and there he revealed(BB) himself to Samuel through his word.

And Samuel’s word came to all Israel.

The Philistines Capture the Ark

Now the Israelites went out to fight against the Philistines. The Israelites camped at Ebenezer,(BC) and the Philistines at Aphek.(BD) The Philistines deployed their forces to meet Israel, and as the battle spread, Israel was defeated by the Philistines, who killed about four thousand of them on the battlefield. When the soldiers returned to camp, the elders of Israel asked, “Why(BE) did the Lord bring defeat on us today before the Philistines? Let us bring the ark(BF) of the Lord’s covenant from Shiloh,(BG) so that he may go with us(BH) and save us from the hand of our enemies.”

So the people sent men to Shiloh, and they brought back the ark of the covenant of the Lord Almighty, who is enthroned between the cherubim.(BI) And Eli’s two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, were there with the ark of the covenant of God.

When the ark of the Lord’s covenant came into the camp, all Israel raised such a great shout(BJ) that the ground shook. Hearing the uproar, the Philistines asked, “What’s all this shouting in the Hebrew(BK) camp?”

When they learned that the ark of the Lord had come into the camp, the Philistines were afraid.(BL) “A god has[d] come into the camp,” they said. “Oh no! Nothing like this has happened before. We’re doomed! Who will deliver us from the hand of these mighty gods? They are the gods who struck(BM) the Egyptians with all kinds of plagues(BN) in the wilderness. Be strong, Philistines! Be men, or you will be subject to the Hebrews, as they(BO) have been to you. Be men, and fight!”

10 So the Philistines fought, and the Israelites were defeated(BP) and every man fled to his tent. The slaughter was very great; Israel lost thirty thousand foot soldiers. 11 The ark of God was captured, and Eli’s two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, died.(BQ)

Death of Eli

12 That same day a Benjamite(BR) ran from the battle line and went to Shiloh with his clothes torn and dust(BS) on his head. 13 When he arrived, there was Eli(BT) sitting on his chair by the side of the road, watching, because his heart feared for the ark of God. When the man entered the town and told what had happened, the whole town sent up a cry.

14 Eli heard the outcry and asked, “What is the meaning of this uproar?”

The man hurried over to Eli, 15 who was ninety-eight years old and whose eyes(BU) had failed so that he could not see. 16 He told Eli, “I have just come from the battle line; I fled from it this very day.”

Eli asked, “What happened, my son?”

17 The man who brought the news replied, “Israel fled before the Philistines, and the army has suffered heavy losses. Also your two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, are dead,(BV) and the ark of God has been captured.”(BW)

18 When he mentioned the ark of God, Eli fell backward off his chair by the side of the gate. His neck was broken and he died, for he was an old man, and he was heavy. He had led[e](BX) Israel forty years.(BY)

19 His daughter-in-law, the wife of Phinehas, was pregnant and near the time of delivery. When she heard the news that the ark of God had been captured and that her father-in-law and her husband were dead, she went into labor and gave birth, but was overcome by her labor pains. 20 As she was dying, the women attending her said, “Don’t despair; you have given birth to a son.” But she did not respond or pay any attention.

21 She named the boy Ichabod,[f](BZ) saying, “The Glory(CA) has departed from Israel”—because of the capture of the ark of God and the deaths of her father-in-law and her husband. 22 She said, “The Glory(CB) has departed from Israel, for the ark of God has been captured.”(CC)

John 5:24-47

24 “Very truly I tell you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me(A) has eternal life(B) and will not be judged(C) but has crossed over from death to life.(D) 25 Very truly I tell you, a time is coming and has now come(E) when the dead will hear(F) the voice of the Son of God and those who hear will live. 26 For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life(G) in himself. 27 And he has given him authority to judge(H) because he is the Son of Man.

28 “Do not be amazed at this, for a time is coming(I) when all who are in their graves will hear his voice 29 and come out—those who have done what is good will rise to live, and those who have done what is evil will rise to be condemned.(J) 30 By myself I can do nothing;(K) I judge only as I hear, and my judgment is just,(L) for I seek not to please myself but him who sent me.(M)

Testimonies About Jesus

31 “If I testify about myself, my testimony is not true.(N) 32 There is another who testifies in my favor,(O) and I know that his testimony about me is true.

33 “You have sent to John and he has testified(P) to the truth. 34 Not that I accept human testimony;(Q) but I mention it that you may be saved.(R) 35 John was a lamp that burned and gave light,(S) and you chose for a time to enjoy his light.

36 “I have testimony weightier than that of John.(T) For the works that the Father has given me to finish—the very works that I am doing(U)—testify that the Father has sent me.(V) 37 And the Father who sent me has himself testified concerning me.(W) You have never heard his voice nor seen his form,(X) 38 nor does his word dwell in you,(Y) for you do not believe(Z) the one he sent.(AA) 39 You study[a] the Scriptures(AB) diligently because you think that in them you have eternal life.(AC) These are the very Scriptures that testify about me,(AD) 40 yet you refuse to come to me(AE) to have life.

41 “I do not accept glory from human beings,(AF) 42 but I know you. I know that you do not have the love of God in your hearts. 43 I have come in my Father’s name, and you do not accept me; but if someone else comes in his own name, you will accept him. 44 How can you believe since you accept glory from one another but do not seek the glory that comes from the only God[b]?(AG)

45 “But do not think I will accuse you before the Father. Your accuser is Moses,(AH) on whom your hopes are set.(AI) 46 If you believed Moses, you would believe me, for he wrote about me.(AJ) 47 But since you do not believe what he wrote, how are you going to believe what I say?”(AK)

Psalm 106:1-12

Psalm 106(A)

Praise the Lord.[a](B)

Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good;(C)
his love endures forever.(D)

Who can proclaim the mighty acts(E) of the Lord
or fully declare his praise?
Blessed are those who act justly,(F)
who always do what is right.(G)

Remember me,(H) Lord, when you show favor(I) to your people,
come to my aid(J) when you save them,
that I may enjoy the prosperity(K) of your chosen ones,(L)
that I may share in the joy(M) of your nation
and join your inheritance(N) in giving praise.

We have sinned,(O) even as our ancestors(P) did;
we have done wrong and acted wickedly.(Q)
When our ancestors were in Egypt,
they gave no thought(R) to your miracles;
they did not remember(S) your many kindnesses,
and they rebelled by the sea,(T) the Red Sea.[b]
Yet he saved them(U) for his name’s sake,(V)
to make his mighty power(W) known.
He rebuked(X) the Red Sea, and it dried up;(Y)
he led them through(Z) the depths as through a desert.
10 He saved them(AA) from the hand of the foe;(AB)
from the hand of the enemy he redeemed them.(AC)
11 The waters covered(AD) their adversaries;
not one of them survived.
12 Then they believed his promises
and sang his praise.(AE)

1 Samuel 1:1-2:21

The Birth of Samuel

There was a certain man from Ramathaim,(A) a Zuphite[a](B) from the hill country(C) of Ephraim,(D) whose name was Elkanah(E) son of Jeroham, the son of Elihu, the son of Tohu, the son of Zuph, an Ephraimite. He had two wives;(F) one was called Hannah and the other Peninnah. Peninnah had children, but Hannah had none.

Year after year(G) this man went up from his town to worship(H) and sacrifice to the Lord Almighty at Shiloh,(I) where Hophni and Phinehas, the two sons of Eli,(J) were priests of the Lord. Whenever the day came for Elkanah to sacrifice,(K) he would give portions of the meat to his wife Peninnah and to all her sons and daughters.(L) But to Hannah he gave a double portion(M) because he loved her, and the Lord had closed her womb.(N) Because the Lord had closed Hannah’s womb, her rival kept provoking her in order to irritate her.(O) This went on year after year. Whenever Hannah went up to the house of the Lord, her rival provoked her till she wept and would not eat.(P) Her husband Elkanah would say to her, “Hannah, why are you weeping? Why don’t you eat? Why are you downhearted? Don’t I mean more to you than ten sons?(Q)

Once when they had finished eating and drinking in Shiloh, Hannah stood up. Now Eli the priest was sitting on his chair by the doorpost of the Lord’s house.(R) 10 In her deep anguish(S) Hannah prayed to the Lord, weeping bitterly. 11 And she made a vow,(T) saying, “Lord Almighty(U), if you will only look on your servant’s misery and remember(V) me, and not forget your servant but give her a son, then I will give him to the Lord for all the days of his life,(W) and no razor(X) will ever be used on his head.”

12 As she kept on praying to the Lord, Eli observed her mouth. 13 Hannah was praying in her heart, and her lips were moving but her voice was not heard. Eli thought she was drunk 14 and said to her, “How long are you going to stay drunk? Put away your wine.”

15 “Not so, my lord,” Hannah replied, “I am a woman who is deeply troubled.(Y) I have not been drinking wine or beer; I was pouring(Z) out my soul to the Lord. 16 Do not take your servant for a wicked woman; I have been praying here out of my great anguish and grief.”(AA)

17 Eli answered, “Go in peace,(AB) and may the God of Israel grant you what you have asked of him.(AC)

18 She said, “May your servant find favor in your eyes.(AD)” Then she went her way and ate something, and her face was no longer downcast.(AE)

19 Early the next morning they arose and worshiped before the Lord and then went back to their home at Ramah.(AF) Elkanah made love to his wife Hannah, and the Lord remembered(AG) her. 20 So in the course of time Hannah became pregnant and gave birth to a son.(AH) She named(AI) him Samuel,[b](AJ) saying, “Because I asked the Lord for him.”

Hannah Dedicates Samuel

21 When her husband Elkanah went up with all his family to offer the annual(AK) sacrifice to the Lord and to fulfill his vow,(AL) 22 Hannah did not go. She said to her husband, “After the boy is weaned, I will take him and present(AM) him before the Lord, and he will live there always.”[c]

23 “Do what seems best to you,” her husband Elkanah told her. “Stay here until you have weaned him; only may the Lord make good(AN) his[d] word.” So the woman stayed at home and nursed her son until she had weaned(AO) him.

24 After he was weaned, she took the boy with her, young as he was, along with a three-year-old bull,[e](AP) an ephah[f] of flour and a skin of wine, and brought him to the house of the Lord at Shiloh. 25 When the bull had been sacrificed, they brought the boy to Eli, 26 and she said to him, “Pardon me, my lord. As surely as you live, I am the woman who stood here beside you praying to the Lord. 27 I prayed(AQ) for this child, and the Lord has granted me what I asked of him. 28 So now I give him to the Lord. For his whole life(AR) he will be given over to the Lord.” And he worshiped the Lord there.

Hannah’s Prayer

Then Hannah prayed and said:(AS)

“My heart rejoices(AT) in the Lord;
in the Lord my horn[g](AU) is lifted high.
My mouth boasts(AV) over my enemies,(AW)
for I delight in your deliverance.

“There is no one holy(AX) like(AY) the Lord;
there is no one besides you;
there is no Rock(AZ) like our God.

“Do not keep talking so proudly
or let your mouth speak such arrogance,(BA)
for the Lord is a God who knows,(BB)
and by him deeds(BC) are weighed.(BD)

“The bows of the warriors are broken,(BE)
but those who stumbled are armed with strength.(BF)
Those who were full hire themselves out for food,
but those who were hungry(BG) are hungry no more.
She who was barren(BH) has borne seven children,
but she who has had many sons pines away.

“The Lord brings death and makes alive;(BI)
he brings down to the grave and raises up.(BJ)
The Lord sends poverty and wealth;(BK)
he humbles and he exalts.(BL)
He raises(BM) the poor(BN) from the dust(BO)
and lifts the needy(BP) from the ash heap;
he seats them with princes
and has them inherit a throne of honor.(BQ)

“For the foundations(BR) of the earth are the Lord’s;
on them he has set the world.
He will guard the feet(BS) of his faithful servants,(BT)
but the wicked will be silenced in the place of darkness.(BU)

“It is not by strength(BV) that one prevails;
10 those who oppose the Lord will be broken.(BW)
The Most High will thunder(BX) from heaven;
the Lord will judge(BY) the ends of the earth.

“He will give strength(BZ) to his king
and exalt the horn(CA) of his anointed.”

11 Then Elkanah went home to Ramah,(CB) but the boy ministered(CC) before the Lord under Eli the priest.

Eli’s Wicked Sons

12 Eli’s sons were scoundrels; they had no regard(CD) for the Lord. 13 Now it was the practice(CE) of the priests that, whenever any of the people offered a sacrifice, the priest’s servant would come with a three-pronged fork in his hand while the meat(CF) was being boiled 14 and would plunge the fork into the pan or kettle or caldron or pot. Whatever the fork brought up the priest would take for himself. This is how they treated all the Israelites who came to Shiloh. 15 But even before the fat was burned, the priest’s servant would come and say to the person who was sacrificing, “Give the priest some meat to roast; he won’t accept boiled meat from you, but only raw.”

16 If the person said to him, “Let the fat(CG) be burned first, and then take whatever you want,” the servant would answer, “No, hand it over now; if you don’t, I’ll take it by force.”

17 This sin of the young men was very great in the Lord’s sight, for they[h] were treating the Lord’s offering with contempt.(CH)

18 But Samuel was ministering(CI) before the Lord—a boy wearing a linen ephod.(CJ) 19 Each year his mother made him a little robe and took it to him when she went up with her husband to offer the annual(CK) sacrifice. 20 Eli would bless Elkanah and his wife, saying, “May the Lord give you children by this woman to take the place of the one she prayed(CL) for and gave to[i] the Lord.” Then they would go home. 21 And the Lord was gracious to Hannah;(CM) she gave birth to three sons and two daughters. Meanwhile, the boy Samuel grew(CN) up in the presence of the Lord.

John 5:1-23

The Healing at the Pool

Some time later, Jesus went up to Jerusalem for one of the Jewish festivals. Now there is in Jerusalem near the Sheep Gate(A) a pool, which in Aramaic(B) is called Bethesda[a] and which is surrounded by five covered colonnades. Here a great number of disabled people used to lie—the blind, the lame, the paralyzed. [4] [b] One who was there had been an invalid for thirty-eight years. When Jesus saw him lying there and learned that he had been in this condition for a long time, he asked him, “Do you want to get well?”

“Sir,” the invalid replied, “I have no one to help me into the pool when the water is stirred. While I am trying to get in, someone else goes down ahead of me.”

Then Jesus said to him, “Get up! Pick up your mat and walk.”(C) At once the man was cured; he picked up his mat and walked.

The day on which this took place was a Sabbath,(D) 10 and so the Jewish leaders(E) said to the man who had been healed, “It is the Sabbath; the law forbids you to carry your mat.”(F)

11 But he replied, “The man who made me well said to me, ‘Pick up your mat and walk.’

12 So they asked him, “Who is this fellow who told you to pick it up and walk?”

13 The man who was healed had no idea who it was, for Jesus had slipped away into the crowd that was there.

14 Later Jesus found him at the temple and said to him, “See, you are well again. Stop sinning(G) or something worse may happen to you.” 15 The man went away and told the Jewish leaders(H) that it was Jesus who had made him well.

The Authority of the Son

16 So, because Jesus was doing these things on the Sabbath, the Jewish leaders began to persecute him. 17 In his defense Jesus said to them, “My Father(I) is always at his work(J) to this very day, and I too am working.” 18 For this reason they tried all the more to kill him;(K) not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God.(L)

19 Jesus gave them this answer: “Very truly I tell you, the Son can do nothing by himself;(M) he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does. 20 For the Father loves the Son(N) and shows him all he does. Yes, and he will show him even greater works than these,(O) so that you will be amazed. 21 For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life,(P) even so the Son gives life(Q) to whom he is pleased to give it. 22 Moreover, the Father judges no one, but has entrusted all judgment to the Son,(R) 23 that all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father, who sent him.(S)

1 Samuel 1:1-2:21, John 5:1-23, Psalms 105:37-45, Proverbs 14:28-29

Today is the 7th day of May welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I’m Brian it is a joy to greet a brand-new shiny sparkly week around the Global Campfire together as we move forward, move forward into this new week. Looking out over it, it’s a beautiful Vista from here. And we can go down into this week and make it the depths or we can walk through this week in wisdom. And one of the ways that we do that is orienting ourselves to God through His word each and every day. And, so, that’s what we come to do, step into the new week together, step into the next step in the Scriptures, and that next step leads us into some new territory. So, we…we navigated our way through the book of Judges and then we came to the book of Ruth, which is a breath of fresh air and a beautiful story that also comes from the time of the judges.

Introduction to the book of first Samuel:

And now we are moving into the book of first Samuel. And we are still kind of in the time of the judges. Samuel is the final judge of that era. And, so, during the books of Samuel we will…well…actually during the book of first Samuel we will transition from judges and be introduced to the very first monarch, the very first king of Israel, which…which brings about a new era in the lives of the children of Israel and we’ll get to know about that plenty as we continue the story forward. But since we’re kind of navigating into a new era we should orient ourselves a little bit. As we begin the books of Samuel, we’ll meet Samuel and it’s a remarkable story. And it’s a story once again of a barren woman longing for a child, and God giving the child and this child will be Samuel who will grow up literally under the shadow of the most-high. And Samuel’s leadership will then lead us to Israel’s first king, King Saul. And we will begin to understand Saul’s story in relationship to Samuel and then Saul’s story out of relationship with Samuel. And Saul will be a bit of a mirror into our own souls as we understand his story. A great deal of challenging parallels start to surface and we start looking at ourselves. And then a little bit later before we get through the books of Samuel we’ll meet another man named David. And of course, the book of Ruth told us that Ruth and Boaz’s marriage produced a son named Obed. And Obed became the father of Jesse, and Jesse was the father of David. And this is the David of David and Goliath fame, who will become Israel’s second king. And we will get to know him quite well also and he will have an awful lot to teach us about ourselves also. We have been getting to know David through his poetry and lyrics. So many found in the book of Psalms. But as we move through Samuel, second Samuel in particular we’ll get to know David as a person and understand his story. And since we’ll be settling in here and kinda camping out for a while in these stories, it’s a good time to just understand a bit of context, a little bit of historical context. Originally first and second Samuel were not broken apart into separate text. They were grouped together with the books of first and second Kings. So, first and second Samuel and then first and second Kings all together as one continuous text. And then when the…when the Old Testament, the Hebrew Scriptures were translated into Greek, this is known as the Septuagint. The books then were divided into four separate texts, and they were at that time known as the books of the kingdoms. And then later after that when the Old Testament was translated into Latin, which is called the Vulgate, they became the books of the Kings. And, so, during that time there were four books of Kings in the Bible. First, second, third and fourth Kings in the Bible which is kinda confusing because at that time what we know as first Samuel was called first Kings. And what we know of as second Samuel’s called second Kings and what we now know of as first Kings was third Kings and what we now know as second Kings was fourth Kings. This all changed to what we now know as first and second Samuel and first and second Kings when the translators created the King James Bible. And that happened in the year 1611. Go back to Samuel. We will see he was a very influential prophetic voice in the life of Israel and the final judge of Israel, but he was also a prophet of God. And, so, he was able to serve before the Lord as a priest, not just a judge, as a priestly judge. But during his life, as we learned over and over from the book of Judges, everybody was doing what was right in their own eyes. And then Samuel comes along and steps into the breach as a prophet of God, which kind of settled the anarchy down because Samuel was speaking directly for God, a prophetic leader. And that was something that was more historically understandable by the children of Israel because they had been led by Moses and we’ll be able to see that in the text. We’ll see the respect for Samuel in ways that we didn’t see with the other judges. Anyway, that’s let's…let’s dive in. We’re in for a great ride. This is gonna be a season of transition in the story of the children of Israel but a fantastic opportunity for self-reflection as we continue forward. So, here we go. We got a brand-new week. We’ll read from the New English translation this week. First Samuel chapter 1 verse 1 through 2 verse 21.

Prayer:

Father, we thank you for your word. We thank you for this brand-new territory and this brand-new era that we are transitioning into as we continue to move through the Old Testament. And as we get to know Samuel as we get to know Saul and then as we get to know David, we’re inviting your Holy Spirit to instruct us and as we ask so often to lead us into the truth, the truth about ourselves, the truth about who you are. We love you. We are eager to grow where you have planted us as you continue to enrich and nourish us through your word. Come Holy Spirit, we pray, in the name of Jesus we ask. Amen.

Community Prayer and Praise:

This is glee filled Bridget from New York City. I’m calling to give you guys an update for those that haven’t heard. The shooter, Michael, was found guilty today. Whoo…this is so heavy. I’m crying because I’m happy that justice was served, right? But I’m also sad because someone’s life has changed forever, obviously. I believe this is God’s mercy on this young man and he can still repent. But his children, you know, won’t have a father like my granddaughter. Anyway, thank you for all your prayers. Thank you for embracing my family and walking through this for the last five years with us. June 18th will be the fifth-year anniversary and I’m just thankful. Thank you, guys. Thank you. I’m so thankful. I pray for anyone that is dealing with anything that is unresolved. When there’s no closure Lord, so many cases that exist with no closure. I just pray father that You would bring closure to hearts this year. Thank you again guys. In Jesus’ name i pray. Amen.

Hello Daily Audio Bible family this is Starting Over Sister. And my husband and I are still starting over after two years having moved when we lost our business. And we are still rebuilding our lives and our livelihood in Texas and just working at it. Appreciate your prayers. I love this community. I’m so thankful for Daily Audio Bible and I wanted to shout out to Daniel Johnson junior today because I really appreciate every time you call. I love everybody’s calls and pray for you all, but Daniel, you’ve always encouraged me and I pray that God will help you choose wholesome godly ways of dealing with struggles. It’s hard for all of us to do that but may he strengthen you. Please pray for our community. Our one of our pastors took his own life about two weeks ago and he was a very godly man, a great pastor, a biblical scholar. And at his memorial service it was said that he failed that day, but he would ask us all to forgive him. And i thought that was the perfect thing, that we all are capable of failure, but God forgives all our sins. Jesus’ blood covers all our sins and when we fail, God will forgive us, and we must forgive one another. And it was a reminder to me of how fragile we all are in trying to live for Christ in this difficult world. I pray that we can all be lights and just be a little more kind to one another and generous and forgiving. I love you, family. God bless you.

Hey this is Jerry calling from Duluth MN. I was listening to the community prayer line and Matt from New Hampshire, your call and mentioning your son Josiah who’s been in the psych unit for 4 ½ weeks and coming home for perhaps the ECT treatments really touched my heart and I want you to know that I’m praying for you. It was four years ago last week that my son was on the banks of the Mississippi River in Minneapolis and called his sister to tell her goodbye. Fortunately, Melissa, who’s also a bipolar was able to talk him down and get his coordinates and we were able to get him to the hospital. But still a struggle. He’s one who chooses not to have…use medications for his struggles. So, continue to pray for Steve. And I’d appreciate your prayers greatly too. Mental health has really been on my mind recently because I’m a part of a program called leadership Duluth and I’m gonna be leading during the month of May a mental health awareness campaign and I just need wisdom and just need God. And He already has an incredible ways. Wish I could share it with you all but times a tickin’ away. And God bless you. Thank you so much.

Hi this is Victoria Soldier just calling to pray for some of the DABbers. I wanted to pray for Early…Early Bird and the challenges that she’s going through. I wanna pray for the 18-year-old son of…the 18-year-old son of that is…that is going through it as…in…in…in the…I forget which…about her 18-year-old son that’s Early Bid’s son. I also wanna pray for Jay in Victoria Louisiana. I also want to pray for Tom and Texas and the…and the challenges that he’s going through. And I wanted to…to pray for…for Brian and Jill and…and telling them thanks for the podcast. And I wanna pray for Lisa the Encourager and the precious lady that lost her mother and the…I think it was too precious ladies that lost their mother and the one…the two automobile accidents. I want to pray for those and the family of the ones that didn’t make it and I want to pray for the one that…that we don’t know that whether they made it but them and their family. Gracious Father we just ask You to have Your way in the name of Jesus. Lord, You deliver. You set the captives free. You give life in favor. You are still working miracles. You’re still doing great things. O Lord You eit those that don't…that don’t feel the word, let em’ know that there’s an empty spot in every man and woman that can only be filled with the personality of Jesus Christ. Lord, I ask that You would ignite that spirit Father of those that have accepted You and that they have joy and peace and…and…and…and look to You Lord for the joy and the peace and for the victory. We are more than conquerors __. And Lord, we give You the glory and the honor and the praise in Jesus’ name. I love you all DABbers. Bye-bye.

Hey, my name is Madeleine I’m a mother of a son called Joshua and I just got a post on the Daily Audio wall, a prayer so you might know, But my son Joshua for whatever reason that is in God’s control, I know, but I would be entirely grateful for prayer because we are in court with him now after just having him. It…it took a while for us to get pregnant, me and my husband, and I’m in a wheelchair. And, so, he does the physical…physical stuff with Joshua and I do the…the emotional and encouraging and stuff like that. Sometimes I get insecure, and I don’t know always feel like I am a mother and I’m the best mother because he stays with my mom at night and I’m very very insecure about it. But it doesn’t stop me from how I am with my son. I’m his…I’m his cheerleader in everything he does. I love him so much. But loving him so much and no one understanding how it feels to be in a wheelchair and see your son grow up and learn to walk and things like that and go to other people and say…learn how to say Mama.

Hey Daily Audio Bible family this is John calling from Westminster MA currently in my car making my way into Boston. Daniel Johnson junior from beautiful Cincinnati OH I’m calling in for you. I heard your call. It aired about the 1st.

of May and first of all I just want to say I love you brother. I’ve heard your voice on this program for years now and I’ve never called in to say how much I appreciate you, how much I appreciate your enthusiasm, and how much I appreciate your…your honesty, and especially after your call yesterday, your confession really of how you’re just not handling or hadn’t been handling, you know, not really…you said it was your job loss, I guess, or, you know, being out of work and, you know, being the provider for your family and just not handling all that kind of loss, I guess is the best way to put it. And what I’m just going to say to you brother as a brother is like you’re not alone in that. I’m gonna just…I’m just gonna sum all that up you’ve been going through to our…our pride, right? At the end of the day…at the end of the day our pride is rooted, and pride leads to all sorts of stuff that’s not healthy for us ultimately. But listen. The bottom line is that you’re talking about it. We’re hearing you. You’ve got brothers and sisters that are praying for you and God has got you, has always had you, will always have you, and you know that as well as I know that. So, I wanted to let you know that I love you. I’m super thankful that you called in and that you kind of made that confession and just told us what’s going on. Know that you’re loved, know that you’re prayed for and know that Jesus has got you. You’re stepping into a new time and new provision, and he’s got you my man and so do we. Love you Daniel Johnson junior from beautiful Cincinnati OH. You make it a great day. Cheers everybody. We’ll talk soon. Bye.

Ruth 2:1-4:22, John 4:43-54, Psalm 105:16-36, Proverbs 14:26-27

Today is the sixth day of May, welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I am Brian. It is wonderful to be here with you today, as we take the next step forward and approach the end of another one of our weeks together. Yesterday, we transitioned out of the Book of Judges and into the book of Ruth, and we talked about that yesterday. Today, we will complete, conclude the book of Ruth. It’s just a short book and then tomorrow we will transition ourselves again into the Books of Samuel, but we’ll talk about that tomorrow. We’re here now and we’re here to continue our journey by taking the next step forward and that is going to be Ruth chapters 2, 3 and 4 today.

Prayer:

Father, we thank You for Your word, we thank You for every word of Your word, we thank You for everything that it does inside of us, challenging all of the places in us that need to be challenge and touching and comforting, all that we need to be comforted inside of us. We are grateful for Your word. And what a fitting way to end another week together by moving through the book of Ruth, watching that character matters, that doing things the right way matters and that You bless what is done with integrity. So, Holy Spirit, come. Continue to develop character and integrity in us. Show us the places where we are still hiding in the shadows that we might come into the light and be truly free, we ask in the name of Jesus. Amen.

Prayer and Encouragements:

Hey, DAB Family, would you join me in prayer for Junk to Treasure? She’s asked me to call in on her behalf. Her son’s wife and newborn baby died in a car wreck. The son heard the wreck, it was down the street from him, and he ran to her and his precious baby and they’re dead. And as you can imagine, Junk to Treasure is just beside herself for her son. She can’t even imagine what he’s thinking right now. Father God, we just come to You, right now, and we ask that You would just surround Junk to Treasure and her son and the entire family as they grieve this loss. This most horrible loss, Lord God, that we take comfort that this baby and this mother are in Your arms instantly, Lord God. But Father, would You come and just be there for Junk to Treasure and her son and the family as they go through this time of severe pain and grieving, Father God. We just sit and shiva next to her with really no words to speak Lord, of this terrible moment in time. How do we process this kind of pain? How did Job? How did Job do it, Lord God. Only by Your grace and mercy. And Father, we just ask that You would come, Holy Spirit, come, pour into this situation right now. And be there holding them as they process, Lord God. And as her son I’m sure, is reliving this moment over and over and over in his mind. Would You come and just be, be there for him as they process. And just give Junk to Treasure the space and the time and the wisdom as to what to say and how to be there. In Jesus name. Amen.

Greetings, Daily Audio Bible Family. For this a day in which the Lord has made. Let us rejoice and be glad in it. This is Sherlock on the Case, and I’m just calling just to thank Brian for this awesome ministry bringing us the word, each and every day. I’ve been doing this now since 2010. I was just so pleased at one point in time. I just needed to find a source that I could enjoy the Bible. And with Brian, when I found his voice just captured, captivated and I have been listening since. And this family is such a powerful, powerful family. Especially with all the prayer warriors in which we have and call in and they pray for others. Well, today, I’m in need of prayer for my friend Bill, who is going through surgery today, which is the 27th of April. But I know that prayer transcends all time. And I know that the way that the Lord works, He is a way maker, miracle worker, promise keeper, He is light in the darkness. So, I’m just asking for each and every one, just so if you could pray for my friend Bill. And for a successful surgery and a speedy recovery. So, thank you guys so much for your help today. Truly, truly appreciate it. I don’t call enough but I know that if there is a need, you family are always there to carry out that need. So, I just thank you again in advance for your help and your prayers.

Greetings. I won’t bother you with who I am because I have a lot to say in this short amount of time. My wife and I have been married for 30 years and I’m calling in reference to the young lady who called in on the 18th of April in reference to invitro fertilization. My wife and I have gone through that same process a couple of times. One of which was when we were overseas, and it turned out to be a scam. And hopefully the doctor that did the scamming is still in jail till this day. This happened back in 1993 or so. Anyway, we then came to the states and went to a prominent military hospital where we could get invitro fertilization. And it didn’t take then either. It was then that our prayer was to have a girl. And then, our prayer changed upon the gumption of the Holy Spirit that we would have twins. And so, back then we have a prophecy told to us by a young lady, that this time next year we would have a child. And then, the first lady of our church, came and told us that God is about to bless you all double for your trouble. And in 2006 God blessed us with twin girls, three months old, through adoption. And here we are, 17 years later. They went to their prom on this past Friday. All we know is that God is able to do exceeding and abundantly above all we could ask or think.

Hello, Daily Audio Bible Family. I am a long-time listener, first-time caller. And I’m gonna call myself Keeper of Men. That’s because my actual name really means that. And I’m a married woman with 3 grown sons. And my husband and I are small business owners and 15 of my 16 employees are men. So, it’s appropriate. Actually, that’s one of the reasons I’m calling in. We have an employee by the name of Angel, who had a, had a sickness, a very bad illness as a child. And is kind of still suffering from that, effects of it. And he’s in the hospital more often than not. He’s really a young man, he’s only about 30 and even today, he’s gone back into the hospital with stomach pains and low blood cell levels. And I would love it if you guys could pray for Angel to be healed of his lingering effects of meningitis from when he was a child and everything that plaguing him now. And strengthen his body. And my second prayer request is for a friend of mine named Deana, who is a breast cancer survivor but she’s suffering with multiple myeloma, which kind of throws out tumors in various places on your body. And she is going through radiation, I believe right now. And has a fentanyl patch and satan Tylenol and they just can’t get the pain really under control. So, if you could pray for the Lord, salvation for both of them, if they need it. I’m not sure about that and healing and pain relief for both of them. Because I know they need that, they need the healing. Thank you very much for all your prayers and all. And I really enjoy listening to everybody call in their prayers. And I pray all the time for you guys and listen to it all. Just again, thank you and God bless. Bye.

Hi, this is Donna from California. And today is April 28th. Wanted to call in a response to a couple of prayer, prayers that came in. The first two, actually, today. First was Early Bird, who is a new listener and just wanna say, give you a warm welcome and we’re so glad you’re here with us. I can certainly relate to leaving a stressful job without really having a solid backup plan in place. Just, I can completely relate to that. And also, to your love for animals, rescuing them. God bless you for that. I will definitely be praying for resources to come. Maybe even you can find work, working with animals. And then for your sleep, I have found that Brian Hardin’s resource Sleep, which he released, I think, within the past year, I think it was toward the end of last year. Has been very helpful. You can find it on whatever device you or whatever type of music you use. And then secondly, there was a gentleman who called for the first time. The second caller who called and confessed that he had committed adultery and just wanted to say that your honestly, your transparency that’s where it begins. And you’ve laid it out before God, you are taking ownership of this and if you keep turning to God and keep seeking him, keep asking, He will help you through this. The consequences are very painful for obviously you noted for your family, your wife especially and for you. Just wanted to say, so glad you are back walking with the Lord.

Hey, guys, it’s Spark. I just love to call and pray for everyone. But I know we’ve, it’s amazing. We’ve got long prayer lines. Bear with me if I get emotional. Tom from Texas, my friend. My fellow Texan. I’m gonna tell you dude, you’re not down, you’re right where God wants you to be. Your family left you. Your job left you. You’re searching for faith. In this app, brother, God is setting you up. Hit your knees, brother. I lay down right now with you. Father God, we ask that You be with this man, and we ask that You be with all men. They feel beaten and defeated by this world, God. Lord, You give us strength. You give us amazing strength and You help us dominate everything that comes up in our life. And You beat the enemy when he beats us into this. Lord, I ask that You be with my brother, and I ask that You help him stand up on his two feet and I ask him to call to You right now. Jesus, I ask that You show this man that he has shoulders stronger than anybody he ever knows. And right now, all he needs is You to breathe into his lungs and make his life new. Bring his kids back into his life and help him to guide his life where You are gonna be the one that tells us …

Ruth 2-4

Ruth Meets Boaz in the Grain Field

Now Naomi had a relative(A) on her husband’s side, a man of standing(B) from the clan of Elimelek,(C) whose name was Boaz.(D)

And Ruth the Moabite(E) said to Naomi, “Let me go to the fields and pick up the leftover grain(F) behind anyone in whose eyes I find favor.(G)

Naomi said to her, “Go ahead, my daughter.” So she went out, entered a field and began to glean behind the harvesters.(H) As it turned out, she was working in a field belonging to Boaz, who was from the clan of Elimelek.(I)

Just then Boaz arrived from Bethlehem and greeted the harvesters, “The Lord be with you!(J)

“The Lord bless you!(K)” they answered.

Boaz asked the overseer of his harvesters, “Who does that young woman belong to?”

The overseer replied, “She is the Moabite(L) who came back from Moab with Naomi. She said, ‘Please let me glean and gather among the sheaves(M) behind the harvesters.’ She came into the field and has remained here from morning till now, except for a short rest(N) in the shelter.”

So Boaz said to Ruth, “My daughter, listen to me. Don’t go and glean in another field and don’t go away from here. Stay here with the women who work for me. Watch the field where the men are harvesting, and follow along after the women. I have told the men not to lay a hand on you. And whenever you are thirsty, go and get a drink from the water jars the men have filled.”

10 At this, she bowed down with her face to the ground.(O) She asked him, “Why have I found such favor in your eyes that you notice me(P)—a foreigner?(Q)

11 Boaz replied, “I’ve been told all about what you have done for your mother-in-law(R) since the death of your husband(S)—how you left your father and mother and your homeland and came to live with a people you did not know(T) before.(U) 12 May the Lord repay you for what you have done. May you be richly rewarded by the Lord,(V) the God of Israel,(W) under whose wings(X) you have come to take refuge.(Y)

13 “May I continue to find favor in your eyes,(Z) my lord,” she said. “You have put me at ease by speaking kindly to your servant—though I do not have the standing of one of your servants.”

14 At mealtime Boaz said to her, “Come over here. Have some bread(AA) and dip it in the wine vinegar.”

When she sat down with the harvesters,(AB) he offered her some roasted grain.(AC) She ate all she wanted and had some left over.(AD) 15 As she got up to glean, Boaz gave orders to his men, “Let her gather among the sheaves(AE) and don’t reprimand her. 16 Even pull out some stalks for her from the bundles and leave them for her to pick up, and don’t rebuke(AF) her.”

17 So Ruth gleaned in the field until evening. Then she threshed(AG) the barley she had gathered, and it amounted to about an ephah.[a](AH) 18 She carried it back to town, and her mother-in-law saw how much she had gathered. Ruth also brought out and gave her what she had left over(AI) after she had eaten enough.

19 Her mother-in-law asked her, “Where did you glean today? Where did you work? Blessed be the man who took notice of you!(AJ)

Then Ruth told her mother-in-law about the one at whose place she had been working. “The name of the man I worked with today is Boaz,” she said.

20 “The Lord bless him!(AK)” Naomi said to her daughter-in-law.(AL) “He has not stopped showing his kindness(AM) to the living and the dead.” She added, “That man is our close relative;(AN) he is one of our guardian-redeemers.[b](AO)

21 Then Ruth the Moabite(AP) said, “He even said to me, ‘Stay with my workers until they finish harvesting all my grain.’”

22 Naomi said to Ruth her daughter-in-law, “It will be good for you, my daughter, to go with the women who work for him, because in someone else’s field you might be harmed.”

23 So Ruth stayed close to the women of Boaz to glean until the barley(AQ) and wheat harvests(AR) were finished. And she lived with her mother-in-law.

Ruth and Boaz at the Threshing Floor

One day Ruth’s mother-in-law Naomi(AS) said to her, “My daughter, I must find a home[c](AT) for you, where you will be well provided for. Now Boaz, with whose women you have worked, is a relative(AU) of ours. Tonight he will be winnowing barley on the threshing floor.(AV) Wash,(AW) put on perfume,(AX) and get dressed in your best clothes.(AY) Then go down to the threshing floor, but don’t let him know you are there until he has finished eating and drinking.(AZ) When he lies down, note the place where he is lying. Then go and uncover his feet and lie down. He will tell you what to do.”

“I will do whatever you say,”(BA) Ruth answered. So she went down to the threshing floor(BB) and did everything her mother-in-law told her to do.

When Boaz had finished eating and drinking and was in good spirits,(BC) he went over to lie down at the far end of the grain pile.(BD) Ruth approached quietly, uncovered his feet and lay down. In the middle of the night something startled the man; he turned—and there was a woman lying at his feet!

“Who are you?” he asked.

“I am your servant Ruth,” she said. “Spread the corner of your garment(BE) over me, since you are a guardian-redeemer[d](BF) of our family.”

10 “The Lord bless you,(BG) my daughter,” he replied. “This kindness is greater than that which you showed earlier:(BH) You have not run after the younger men, whether rich or poor. 11 And now, my daughter, don’t be afraid. I will do for you all you ask. All the people of my town know that you are a woman of noble character.(BI) 12 Although it is true that I am a guardian-redeemer of our family,(BJ) there is another who is more closely related than(BK) I. 13 Stay here for the night, and in the morning if he wants to do his duty as your guardian-redeemer,(BL) good; let him redeem you. But if he is not willing, as surely as the Lord lives(BM) I will do it.(BN) Lie here until morning.”

14 So she lay at his feet until morning, but got up before anyone could be recognized; and he said, “No one must know that a woman came to the threshing floor.(BO)(BP)

15 He also said, “Bring me the shawl(BQ) you are wearing and hold it out.” When she did so, he poured into it six measures of barley and placed the bundle on her. Then he[e] went back to town.

16 When Ruth came to her mother-in-law, Naomi asked, “How did it go, my daughter?”

Then she told her everything Boaz had done for her 17 and added, “He gave me these six measures of barley, saying, ‘Don’t go back to your mother-in-law empty-handed.’”

18 Then Naomi said, “Wait, my daughter, until you find out what happens. For the man will not rest until the matter is settled today.”(BR)

Boaz Marries Ruth

Meanwhile Boaz went up to the town gate(BS) and sat down there just as the guardian-redeemer[f](BT) he had mentioned(BU) came along. Boaz said, “Come over here, my friend, and sit down.” So he went over and sat down.

Boaz took ten of the elders(BV) of the town and said, “Sit here,” and they did so.(BW) Then he said to the guardian-redeemer, “Naomi, who has come back from Moab, is selling the piece of land that belonged to our relative Elimelek.(BX) I thought I should bring the matter to your attention and suggest that you buy it in the presence of these seated here and in the presence of the elders of my people. If you will redeem it, do so. But if you[g] will not, tell me, so I will know. For no one has the right to do it except you,(BY) and I am next in line.”

“I will redeem it,” he said.

Then Boaz said, “On the day you buy the land from Naomi, you also acquire Ruth the Moabite,(BZ) the[h] dead man’s widow, in order to maintain the name of the dead with his property.”(CA)

At this, the guardian-redeemer said, “Then I cannot redeem(CB) it because I might endanger my own estate. You redeem it yourself. I cannot do it.”(CC)

(Now in earlier times in Israel, for the redemption(CD) and transfer of property to become final, one party took off his sandal(CE) and gave it to the other. This was the method of legalizing transactions(CF) in Israel.)(CG)

So the guardian-redeemer said to Boaz, “Buy it yourself.” And he removed his sandal.(CH)

Then Boaz announced to the elders and all the people, “Today you are witnesses(CI) that I have bought from Naomi all the property of Elimelek, Kilion and Mahlon. 10 I have also acquired Ruth the Moabite,(CJ) Mahlon’s widow, as my wife,(CK) in order to maintain the name of the dead with his property, so that his name will not disappear from among his family or from his hometown.(CL) Today you are witnesses!(CM)

11 Then the elders and all the people at the gate(CN) said, “We are witnesses.(CO) May the Lord make the woman who is coming into your home like Rachel and Leah,(CP) who together built up the family of Israel. May you have standing in Ephrathah(CQ) and be famous in Bethlehem.(CR) 12 Through the offspring the Lord gives you by this young woman, may your family be like that of Perez,(CS) whom Tamar(CT) bore to Judah.”

Naomi Gains a Son

13 So Boaz took Ruth and she became his wife. When he made love to her, the Lord enabled her to conceive,(CU) and she gave birth to a son.(CV) 14 The women(CW) said to Naomi: “Praise be to the Lord,(CX) who this day has not left you without a guardian-redeemer.(CY) May he become famous throughout Israel! 15 He will renew your life and sustain you in your old age. For your daughter-in-law,(CZ) who loves you and who is better to you than seven sons,(DA) has given him birth.”

16 Then Naomi took the child in her arms and cared for him. 17 The women living there said, “Naomi has a son!” And they named him Obed. He was the father of Jesse,(DB) the father of David.(DC)

The Genealogy of David(DD)

18 This, then, is the family line of Perez(DE):

Perez was the father of Hezron,(DF)

19 Hezron the father of Ram,

Ram the father of Amminadab,(DG)

20 Amminadab the father of Nahshon,(DH)

Nahshon the father of Salmon,[i]

21 Salmon the father of Boaz,(DI)

Boaz the father of Obed,

22 Obed the father of Jesse,

and Jesse the father of David.

John 4:43-54

Jesus Heals an Official’s Son

43 After the two days(A) he left for Galilee. 44 (Now Jesus himself had pointed out that a prophet has no honor in his own country.)(B) 45 When he arrived in Galilee, the Galileans welcomed him. They had seen all that he had done in Jerusalem at the Passover Festival,(C) for they also had been there.

46 Once more he visited Cana in Galilee, where he had turned the water into wine.(D) And there was a certain royal official whose son lay sick at Capernaum. 47 When this man heard that Jesus had arrived in Galilee from Judea,(E) he went to him and begged him to come and heal his son, who was close to death.

48 “Unless you people see signs and wonders,”(F) Jesus told him, “you will never believe.”

49 The royal official said, “Sir, come down before my child dies.”

50 “Go,” Jesus replied, “your son will live.”

The man took Jesus at his word and departed. 51 While he was still on the way, his servants met him with the news that his boy was living. 52 When he inquired as to the time when his son got better, they said to him, “Yesterday, at one in the afternoon, the fever left him.”

53 Then the father realized that this was the exact time at which Jesus had said to him, “Your son will live.” So he and his whole household(G) believed.

54 This was the second sign(H) Jesus performed after coming from Judea to Galilee.

Psalm 105:16-36

16 He called down famine(A) on the land
and destroyed all their supplies of food;

Joseph, sold as a slave.(B)
18 They bruised his feet with shackles,(C)
his neck was put in irons,

20 The king sent and released him,
the ruler of peoples set him free.(F)

Judges 21 - Ruth 1

Wives for the Benjamites

21 The men of Israel had taken an oath(A) at Mizpah:(B) “Not one of us will give(C) his daughter in marriage to a Benjamite.”

The people went to Bethel,[a] where they sat before God until evening, raising their voices and weeping bitterly. Lord, God of Israel,” they cried, “why has this happened to Israel? Why should one tribe be missing(D) from Israel today?”

Early the next day the people built an altar and presented burnt offerings and fellowship offerings.(E)

Then the Israelites asked, “Who from all the tribes of Israel(F) has failed to assemble before the Lord?” For they had taken a solemn oath that anyone who failed to assemble before the Lord at Mizpah was to be put to death.

Now the Israelites grieved for the tribe of Benjamin, their fellow Israelites. “Today one tribe is cut off from Israel,” they said. “How can we provide wives for those who are left, since we have taken an oath(G) by the Lord not to give them any of our daughters in marriage?” Then they asked, “Which one of the tribes of Israel failed to assemble before the Lord at Mizpah?” They discovered that no one from Jabesh Gilead(H) had come to the camp for the assembly. For when they counted the people, they found that none of the people of Jabesh Gilead were there.

10 So the assembly sent twelve thousand fighting men with instructions to go to Jabesh Gilead and put to the sword those living there, including the women and children. 11 “This is what you are to do,” they said. “Kill every male(I) and every woman who is not a virgin.(J) 12 They found among the people living in Jabesh Gilead four hundred young women who had never slept with a man, and they took them to the camp at Shiloh(K) in Canaan.

13 Then the whole assembly sent an offer of peace(L) to the Benjamites at the rock of Rimmon.(M) 14 So the Benjamites returned at that time and were given the women of Jabesh Gilead who had been spared. But there were not enough for all of them.

15 The people grieved for Benjamin,(N) because the Lord had made a gap in the tribes of Israel. 16 And the elders of the assembly said, “With the women of Benjamin destroyed, how shall we provide wives for the men who are left? 17 The Benjamite survivors must have heirs,” they said, “so that a tribe of Israel will not be wiped out.(O) 18 We can’t give them our daughters as wives, since we Israelites have taken this oath:(P) ‘Cursed be anyone who gives(Q) a wife to a Benjamite.’ 19 But look, there is the annual festival of the Lord in Shiloh,(R) which lies north of Bethel(S), east of the road that goes from Bethel to Shechem,(T) and south of Lebonah.”

20 So they instructed the Benjamites, saying, “Go and hide in the vineyards 21 and watch. When the young women of Shiloh come out to join in the dancing,(U) rush from the vineyards and each of you seize one of them to be your wife. Then return to the land of Benjamin. 22 When their fathers or brothers complain to us, we will say to them, ‘Do us the favor of helping them, because we did not get wives for them during the war. You will not be guilty of breaking your oath because you did not give(V) your daughters to them.’”

23 So that is what the Benjamites did. While the young women were dancing,(W) each man caught one and carried her off to be his wife. Then they returned to their inheritance(X) and rebuilt the towns and settled in them.(Y)

24 At that time the Israelites left that place and went home to their tribes and clans, each to his own inheritance.

25 In those days Israel had no king; everyone did as they saw fit.(Z)

Naomi Loses Her Husband and Sons

In the days when the judges ruled,[b](AA) there was a famine in the land.(AB) So a man from Bethlehem in Judah,(AC) together with his wife and two sons, went to live for a while(AD) in the country of Moab.(AE) The man’s name was Elimelek,(AF) his wife’s name was Naomi, and the names of his two sons were Mahlon and Kilion.(AG) They were Ephrathites(AH) from Bethlehem,(AI) Judah. And they went to Moab and lived there.

Now Elimelek, Naomi’s husband, died, and she was left with her two sons. They married Moabite women,(AJ) one named Orpah and the other Ruth.(AK) After they had lived there about ten years, both Mahlon and Kilion(AL) also died,(AM) and Naomi was left without her two sons and her husband.

Naomi and Ruth Return to Bethlehem

When Naomi heard in Moab(AN) that the Lord had come to the aid of his people(AO) by providing food(AP) for them, she and her daughters-in-law(AQ) prepared to return home from there. With her two daughters-in-law she left the place where she had been living and set out on the road that would take them back to the land of Judah.

Then Naomi said to her two daughters-in-law, “Go back, each of you, to your mother’s home.(AR) May the Lord show you kindness,(AS) as you have shown kindness to your dead husbands(AT) and to me. May the Lord grant that each of you will find rest(AU) in the home of another husband.”

Then she kissed(AV) them goodbye and they wept aloud(AW) 10 and said to her, “We will go back with you to your people.”

11 But Naomi said, “Return home, my daughters. Why would you come with me? Am I going to have any more sons, who could become your husbands?(AX) 12 Return home, my daughters; I am too old to have another husband. Even if I thought there was still hope for me—even if I had a husband tonight and then gave birth to sons— 13 would you wait until they grew up?(AY) Would you remain unmarried for them? No, my daughters. It is more bitter(AZ) for me than for you, because the Lord’s hand has turned against me!(BA)

14 At this they wept(BB) aloud again. Then Orpah kissed her mother-in-law(BC) goodbye,(BD) but Ruth clung to her.(BE)

15 “Look,” said Naomi, “your sister-in-law(BF) is going back to her people and her gods.(BG) Go back with her.”

16 But Ruth replied, “Don’t urge me to leave you(BH) or to turn back from you. Where you go I will go,(BI) and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people(BJ) and your God my God.(BK) 17 Where you die I will die, and there I will be buried. May the Lord deal with me, be it ever so severely,(BL) if even death separates you and me.”(BM) 18 When Naomi realized that Ruth was determined to go with her, she stopped urging her.(BN)

19 So the two women went on until they came to Bethlehem.(BO) When they arrived in Bethlehem, the whole town was stirred(BP) because of them, and the women exclaimed, “Can this be Naomi?”

20 “Don’t call me Naomi,[c]” she told them. “Call me Mara,[d] because the Almighty[e](BQ) has made my life very bitter.(BR) 21 I went away full, but the Lord has brought me back empty.(BS) Why call me Naomi? The Lord has afflicted[f] me;(BT) the Almighty has brought misfortune upon me.”

22 So Naomi returned from Moab accompanied by Ruth the Moabite,(BU) her daughter-in-law,(BV) arriving in Bethlehem as the barley harvest(BW) was beginning.(BX)

John 4:4-42

Now he had to go through Samaria.(A) So he came to a town in Samaria called Sychar, near the plot of ground Jacob had given to his son Joseph.(B) Jacob’s well was there, and Jesus, tired as he was from the journey, sat down by the well. It was about noon.

When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, “Will you give me a drink?”(C) (His disciples had gone into the town(D) to buy food.)

The Samaritan woman said to him, “You are a Jew and I am a Samaritan(E) woman. How can you ask me for a drink?” (For Jews do not associate with Samaritans.[a])

10 Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.”(F)

11 “Sir,” the woman said, “you have nothing to draw with and the well is deep. Where can you get this living water? 12 Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well(G) and drank from it himself, as did also his sons and his livestock?”

13 Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, 14 but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst.(H) Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water(I) welling up to eternal life.”(J)

15 The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water so that I won’t get thirsty(K) and have to keep coming here to draw water.”

16 He told her, “Go, call your husband and come back.”

17 “I have no husband,” she replied.

Jesus said to her, “You are right when you say you have no husband. 18 The fact is, you have had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband. What you have just said is quite true.”

19 “Sir,” the woman said, “I can see that you are a prophet.(L) 20 Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain,(M) but you Jews claim that the place where we must worship is in Jerusalem.”(N)

21 “Woman,” Jesus replied, “believe me, a time is coming(O) when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem.(P) 22 You Samaritans worship what you do not know;(Q) we worship what we do know, for salvation is from the Jews.(R) 23 Yet a time is coming and has now come(S) when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit(T) and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. 24 God is spirit,(U) and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.”

25 The woman said, “I know that Messiah” (called Christ)(V) “is coming. When he comes, he will explain everything to us.”

26 Then Jesus declared, “I, the one speaking to you—I am he.”(W)

The Disciples Rejoin Jesus

27 Just then his disciples returned(X) and were surprised to find him talking with a woman. But no one asked, “What do you want?” or “Why are you talking with her?”

28 Then, leaving her water jar, the woman went back to the town and said to the people, 29 “Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did.(Y) Could this be the Messiah?”(Z) 30 They came out of the town and made their way toward him.

31 Meanwhile his disciples urged him, “Rabbi,(AA) eat something.”

32 But he said to them, “I have food to eat(AB) that you know nothing about.”

33 Then his disciples said to each other, “Could someone have brought him food?”

34 “My food,” said Jesus, “is to do the will(AC) of him who sent me and to finish his work.(AD) 35 Don’t you have a saying, ‘It’s still four months until harvest’? I tell you, open your eyes and look at the fields! They are ripe for harvest.(AE) 36 Even now the one who reaps draws a wage and harvests(AF) a crop for eternal life,(AG) so that the sower and the reaper may be glad together. 37 Thus the saying ‘One sows and another reaps’(AH) is true. 38 I sent you to reap what you have not worked for. Others have done the hard work, and you have reaped the benefits of their labor.”

Many Samaritans Believe

39 Many of the Samaritans from that town(AI) believed in him because of the woman’s testimony, “He told me everything I ever did.”(AJ) 40 So when the Samaritans came to him, they urged him to stay with them, and he stayed two days. 41 And because of his words many more became believers.

42 They said to the woman, “We no longer believe just because of what you said; now we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this man really is the Savior of the world.”(AK)

Judges 21:1- Ruth 1:22, John 4:4-42, Psalms 105:1-15, Proverbs 14:24-25

Today is the 5th day of May welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I am Brian it is a joy to be here with you today as we gather yet again around the Global Campfire and just be here in this oasis of peace and let God speak through the Scriptures into our lives. And our next step forward leads us to where we left off and that leads us back into the book of Judges. We will conclude the book of Judges today and move forward into the book of Ruth today. We began the final story of the book of Judges yesterday, a story that is a dark one that tells of civil war in Israel where all of the tribes gather together to confront profound injustice and murder. But the Benjaminite’s will not give up the perpetrators. And, so, they stand in the way of justice and that leads to war and a lot of people are destroyed and the tribe of Benjamin is virtually annihilated. And, so, there are 600 Benjaminite’s hiding in a place called the rock of Ramon and that’s all that’s left of them, and that’s where we pick up the story. Judges chapter 21.

Introduction to the book of Ruth:

And that is a fitting way for the book of Judges to end because that is one of the main points that it is trying to communicate to us as we’ve read the book of Judges, which now brings us to chapter 1 of a new book. And this is the book of Ruth, and this couldn’t come at a better time after moving through the book of Judges and all of the back-and-forth and seesawing and extremes and rebellion and the challenging of the leadership and the judges rising at critical moments. Ruth is a totally different kind of story. Let’s look at it is a nice May breeze blowing in and blowing out the clouds and bringing us into new territory. Ruth is predominantly a story about three different people to women and one man who chose to do the right thing despite the bitterness that life and brought their way. And this book shows us that when people who have character make correct decisions, like a very different story than the one we just came out of. When people of character make good choices God’s faithfulness is in it. And Ruth also gives us just one of the most beautiful portraits of valiant women of character that we find in the Bible. So, Ruth is the name of the book. Ruth is one of the characters. Her mother-in-law is named Naomi, and because of their faithfulness, Israel’s second king, king David would be born, and it’s through the line of David that Jesus would come. So, let’s take a deep breath in and let’s let it go out as we begin. Ruth, chapter 1.

Prayer:

Father, we thank You for Your word. We thank ou for every day, every moment that we have had together as we have navigated this far into the year and all that You have revealed and shown us. We are grateful. We are thankful and we are eager and looking forward to all that You have yet to do inside of us as transformation takes place. And, so, as we transition from judges and move into Ruth at the time of the judges, Holy Spirit, come, let us drink deeply of this story, and all of the territory that is in front of us we ask in the precious name of Jesus. Amen.

Judges 19:1-20:48, John 3:22-4:3, Psalm 104:24-35, Proverbs 14:22-23

Today is the fourth day of May, welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I am Brian. It is wonderful to be here with you today, around the Global Campfire as we gather and take the next step forward together. And our next step forward leads us back into the Book of Judges. We are very near the end of the Book of Judges; we will conclude the book tomorrow. But that then and this is now. And so, we have another full step forward together in the Book of Judges. And so, let’s dive in, we’re reading from the English Standard Version this week, Judges, chapters 19 and 20.

Commentary:

Okay so, we are in the final story in the Book of Judges, and it is a profoundly dark chapter in the lives of the children of Israel, when Israel had no king, and everyone was doing what was right in their own eyes. Which is something that the Book of Judges repeatedly tells us so that we don’t forget what’s going on here. And this story definitely is a dark one, a story of a man and his…his concubine, sort of like a common-law wife. She was unfaithful to him. He lived in the remote parts of the hill country of Ephraim. She left and went back to Bethlehem and then several months later he went to speak kindly to her, to see if the relationship could be restored and repaired. And that’s when we meet her father who wants the man to stay, and stay, and stay, and stay. And so, they all stay a lot longer than they were planning to stay, but eventually the guys like not going to be convinced to stay another single day. And so, they leave and as the sun is going down and they need to find shelter there are opportunities for them to find shelter. But the man makes the determination that they’re not going to stay with anybody that’s not from their homeland. They’re not going to stay in the city that’s not an Israeli city. And so, they end up in the Israelite city in the tribe of Benjamin, in the city of Gibeah. So, they’re waiting in the town square, they’re waiting for hospitality. If there’s no hospitality, they stay in the town square. But that seems to be a dangerous thing. And so, when an older man comes in and says where are you going and where have you come from, one of his words of counsel is don’t stay how here in the city, in the city square, come into my house. Which is what happens and then the house is surrounded, and all of a sudden, this story is, it has a lot of resemblance to the story of Sodom and Gomorrah, except for one very distinct thing. These were all Israelites, the people of Sodom and Gomorrah were not, the people of Gibeon knew this story. And they surround the house, and they want the man. And as it turns out, it’s the man’s concubine who gets pushed out the door and there’s like no way to sugar coat what the story is, she is raped and abused to death. And she ends up on the doorstep with her hand touching the door dead. Like there’s no way to make that nice, it’s not supposed to be nice, the Bible isn’t telling us this story so that we feel flowery and great about it, it’s showing us where paths lead and how our choices matter. If we just begin at the beginning of the story, she was unfaithful. That’s where the story starts, she was unfaithful. She goes back to Bethlehem. Her husband goes after her, they reconcile. Had they just gone according to plan and gone on home, they would’ve gotten home. But the father-in-law is keeping pressing them to change their minds and stay longer and stay longer. And so, they end up leaving in the late afternoon, instead of in the morning, they could’ve stayed in Jerusalem. They wanted to stay among their fellow Israelites. So, they go to Gibeah. And then all of this stuff is perpetrated and it’s horrible, it’s absolutely horrible. And the story in the Book of Judges is letting us know, yes, you’re reading a horrible story here. The man takes the body of his concubine back to the hill country of Ephraim and does something pretty grisly. He divides her into 12 parts and sends her to all the different tribes of Israel. That sounds absolutely horrific and it is but it sounds that way, as we contextualize it. This is the equivalent of a message going viral. There wasn’t an Internet, there wasn’t, there wasn’t even a car. There wasn’t mass transportation, there wasn’t mass communication. But this would indeed get the attention of the recipient. If a body part shows up at the tribal headquarters, people are going to want to know what is going on here and that did spread as we would understand it today, virally because 400 thousand people gathered over this incident. So, the Bible is not condoning this incident, what we’re finding is that there is outrage over this, as there should be. So, 400,000 people gather to hear the story of what happened and when they are told what happened their response is appropriate. Nothing like this has ever happened in Israel before. Basically like, how could something like this even happen here? What are we supposed to do? And what they decide to do is bring justice, which sets up a scenario for civil war, because the Israelites approach the Benjaminite’s and say look, here’s what happened, give over the perpetrators, they deserve punishment, justice needs to be served. Only the Benjaminite’s won’t. And so, they gather all of their troops together to defend their tribesmen, even though their tribesmen had committed a atrocities so severe that everybody’s talking about it. And that creates the scenario for a war, a civil war among the people of God in the Book of Judges, where tens of thousands of people die. And as we left the story today, the tribe of Benjamin is all but completely annihilated. We will finish that story tomorrow as we finish the Book of Judges and then we will be moving into new territory in the Bible tomorrow. And this story is one of the darkest stories that we encounter in the Bible. And so, not to be complete spoiler, but I just need to tell parts of the rest of the story and then we’ll read the parts of the rest of the story and then move into new territory tomorrow. What we have right now are about 600 people hiding at the Rock of Ramon. That’s all that is left of an entire tribe of Israel. The tribe is missing, like they’re really, like there’s 11 tribes and 600 people in a tribe that has been destroyed because they stood up for injustice and it caused catastrophe throughout Israel among all of the people. Many people died. And the children of Israel, the rest of the tribes have already determined that they will not, they will not intermarry, like they’re breaking connection with Benjamin. So, they make this promise and then they realize that there’s a tribe missing and it’s a sad scene. And they figure out how to replenish the tribe. But Benjamin will be the smallest tribe now obviously. Very, very soon from now, we will begin starting to transition ourselves toward the children of Israel, especially after things like this happening, deciding that they want a king to unite the tribes, to be a monarch over them, to lead them into battle, to sort of be the figurehead, to keep them solidified as one people. And we will meet that king, his name is Saul. And Saul has a ton of stuff to teach us. But as Saul relates to this story, what we are going to find as a redemptive thread, after all of this mayhem that we’re reading about today, time will pass. The tribe of Benjamin will begin to regrow. And God will choose a king to reign over Israel, as Israel’s first king, King Saul. Saul came from a hometown; the hometown of Saul was Gibeah. The same city where all of this went down. And Saul will say yeah, but I’m from the smallest tribe, from the smallest family, who am I. So, out of these ashes that we are reading about right now, will come Israel’s first king. And we will get to that soon enough.

Prayer:

And Father, we invite Your presence into this. It’s really just, to have lived that would've…would’ve been really, profoundly, traumatic. To read of it is traumatic, to just be, turned inside out about the whole thing, makes us feel very like, this is…this is a story that doesn’t belong in the Bible, probably because it is. Probably because it’s a story that shouldn’t have happened and because it did, we now have it as a cautionary tale to remind us that our choices matter. And when we determine that we are going to stand up for injustice and evil, mayhem and destruction are very, very near us. And yet, as the decades would go by, and as things would continue forward, You chose Israel’s first king from the very spot of these ashes and this destruction. You continue to put things back together that are broken and most of the things are broken because we have a broken then. And we all make mistakes, and we all make choices that are wrong but when we’re not paying attention and we compound one wrong with another wrong, with another wrong, with another wrong, where will the path lead but complete catastrophe. And so, we come to You, Holy Spirit, realizing that although the story that we’re reading is extraordinarily graphic and dark one, our stories don’t reach this level of mayhem, we still know what it looks like to make wrong choices and then chase them with others that lead us down a path that is only going to end poorly. So, we come to You with open hands and open hearts and say, Holy Spirit, show us the path that we are on. Show us the path that we are supposed to be on and show us the route to get there and off any wrong path that we are walking willingly, knowing full well that no matter the ashes of our lives, redemption can come forth, because You put back together, what is broken. You are a Redeemer, You are The Redeemer of our souls and we give ourselves to You, believing fully that You will lead us on the narrow path that leads to life. Come, Holy Spirit, we pray, in the name of Jesus, we ask. Amen.

Prayer and Encouragements:

Hello, my DAB Family, this is Lib, I’m calling from the UK. I’ve come to just a give a little bit of encouragement for anyone who is struggling, anyone who thinks that God is far away and is not listening. You know it seems like life is just not happening the way it should. I had something happen yesterday, yesterday evening. Today is the 25th, so it happened on Monday, the 24th of April. My, we locked ourselves out. You know, there was key on the back of the door and my husband rushed out of the house on his way to work and forgot to take his key out. And I was on my way to work and then he called and said, my keys are in the door which means, when you come back you will not be able to come in. And I thought, oh well, as usual I go to my neighbor’s house, this is not the first time it’s happening anyway. And I’ll climb through their balcony and come in through my kitchen door. But then something happened in the evening when I was coming back with the children, and it was raining. And then I remembered, oh I can’t go in and I thought, I said Lord, I can’t climb, it’s raining. All I could see was myself falling off, you know, from that height, trying to climb through. And I went, I can’t climb, it’s raining. You know, and then when I was approaching the door with my boys right beside me and I just kept saying Lord, I can’t climb, I need a miracle. I turned the key the first time, it didn’t work. Turned it a second time, it didn’t work. And I just kept saying, Lord, I need a miracle. I turned it again and the door opened, and I screamed. You know, my greatest joy when that happened was my boys were there. So, for me it was a way, I saw it as building the faith of my children. You know, cause I always tell them anything that you want, ask the Lord, He will do it. So, for anyone who is struggling, ask the Lord.

This is the Burning Bush that Will Not Be Devoured for the Glory of our God and King. This is my second time recording this, my phone just totally shut down halfway through my prayer request, prayer, I’m sorry. For Darlene, her granddaughter, Sophia who’s struggling with Anorexia. So, right now, we pray in the name of Jesus. Father God, I pray that You hold back the evil that’s causing Sophia to not eat. I pray that in the name of Jesus, she will be healed. Father God, You understand what’s going on in her mind. I pray that You heal her mind and her body, in the name of Jesus. I pray for her spirit, I pray for a full deliverance, in Jesus name. Holy Spirit, I pray for a full restoration, that she will begin to walk in what You’ve called her to be, Father, greatness, Father, we speak greatness over her right now, in the name of Jesus. We praise You, oh God, that Lord, that she will be healed, not only physically but spiritually, Father. I pray that in the name of Jesus that she will be freed, Holy Spirit. I pray that You would send Your angels to protect her right now in Jesus name. Even in the hospital, I pray that You will help her to recover. I pray for a speedy recover, Father God. In the name of Jesus, complete. I pray for Devine healing over her. And I pray for her family. I pray for Darlene. I pray, oh Lord Jesus, that You will give them comfort as they go through this. I pray for wisdom for her parents, in the name of Jesus. And whatever it is, what be it emotional, mental, or even physical that she’s struggling with, Father God. You know. I just pray for healing. You touch her, in the name of Jesus, I pray. Amen. I love you guys. Talk to you later.

Hi, this is Amy in Olympia, Washington. I’ve called in a few times before, but I think I would like to start going by Running for Jesus. But anyway, today I’m calling in for my friend and asking for prayer, on her behalf. Her name is Samantha and she’s in the hospital with COVID pneumonia. And she’s fighting for her life. And she’s only in her 30s and she has a special needs daughter at home and her husband is home with her daughter and they’re out of sick leave and it’s just this really discouraging and this seemingly hopeless situation for their family. And it’s not looking good for my friend. They tried to intubate her, and her lungs are so damaged that even that was too much. And so, she’s on a special machine that’s taking the blood out and oxygenating it and putting it back into her body. And they’re also talking about a possible lunch transplant. So, I’m just asking that, that you as a community will pray with me and help me pray confidently that…that God would heal her lungs. I know that He is a God of healing. But it’s just really hard to not feel scared and discouraged for them. And it’s just really discouraging for me like, I just keep asking like why. Like, how can a mom that’s healthy and so young have this happen to her. But yes, if you could just pray for me that God would heal her lungs and that I’ll be able to call back with good news.

Hi, Daily Audio Bible Family. I have lifted countless prayers for this community. I’m a retired single mom and I can’t, I can’t quote them all right now, but just trust and believe that I am daily tuned in and praying for the needs of so many people in this community. And I need the same in return please for my 20-year-old son who is in college but he’s not reaching his full potential because he is struggling with chemical dependency on marijuana. And it is interrupting his relationships and he’s, his, he has other issues that are causing him to go into these psychosis type moods and it is really, really not only separating him from the love of God but also just interrupting his life in every way. And I cannot reach him. And I’ve tried everything to reach him, and I have prayed every prayer and so has his grandmother. And I just need help lifting up my beautiful son to become what God really created him to be and to pull him out of a life of darkness. He’s overtaken with darkness and he’s often very depressed and on this hopeless and this is the only thing in the world that matters to me right now, is the success and the life, the life and the wellbeing of…of my only child. I just need these prayers. My heart is breaking, and I really need these prayers. And I appreciate this community so much.

This is Tilly from Florida, calling on the 26th of April for The Dude from Florida. Dude, I’m also from Florida. I’m on the east coast by Melbourne, Florida on a beach community. What you said bore witness to me in many ways, particularly when you mentioned how you’re, you wouldn’t want to hang around your siblings, other than that. You know, I have 5 siblings, one of them is already passed way. But fortunately, I still have my twin sister and that’s really the only person out of five that I even communicate with. So, I get it and won’t go into it. It’s generational. Father God, I lift up this gentleman to You. I feel his heart and probably could write his story for him. Dude, you’re lifting up before the Lord by me, a person well acquainted with the things that you’ve gone through and go through every day. And I felt that in his spirit, really strong. Father God, as he goes on his trips and for the rest of his life, give him the grace and the peace to forgive his family members and to walk in wholeness and beauty. Have Your Holy Spirit leading and guiding …

Good morning, this is Dana from South Carolina. Today is April the 26th, I was listening to people praying for Libby in Australia. So, I went back and listened on the 19th to hear her request. Libby, I’m praying for you. I too, as a child, had some things happen to me that didn’t realize I, there was an option of speaking out. That I now know as an adult, that that has affected me in a way that, that if I ask for help or that I feel like I’m weak. I always feel like that I have to always be in control of every situation. And I pray, if that’s the feeling that you’re having, that there, if you feel weak, or feel like you’re not in control because you’re asking for help, I pray that the Holy Spirit would just come in and remove that feeling of…of feeling that you’re weak or shame or guilt, that Holy Spirit would remove that and God would wrap His loving arms around you and there would be such a peace and such a presence that you can cry out and speak out. And I pray that those things that have happened to you, that it would be a testimony to other people around you that would help them to grow and to speak out so they too, could help another person. That that feeling of being alone or being weak or it’s just no longer there. And that you would be strengthened by that, and you could strengthen other people. In Jesus name. And I thank You Lord that You’re doing this for her. Holy Spirit, rest on her today. In Jesus name. Amen.

Judges 19-20

A Levite and His Concubine

19 In those days Israel had no king.

Now a Levite who lived in a remote area in the hill country of Ephraim(A) took a concubine from Bethlehem in Judah.(B) But she was unfaithful to him. She left him and went back to her parents’ home in Bethlehem, Judah. After she had been there four months, her husband went to her to persuade her to return. He had with him his servant and two donkeys. She took him into her parents’ home, and when her father saw him, he gladly welcomed him. His father-in-law, the woman’s father, prevailed on him to stay; so he remained with him three days, eating and drinking,(C) and sleeping there.

On the fourth day they got up early and he prepared to leave, but the woman’s father said to his son-in-law, “Refresh yourself(D) with something to eat; then you can go.” So the two of them sat down to eat and drink together. Afterward the woman’s father said, “Please stay tonight and enjoy yourself.(E) And when the man got up to go, his father-in-law persuaded him, so he stayed there that night. On the morning of the fifth day, when he rose to go, the woman’s father said, “Refresh yourself. Wait till afternoon!” So the two of them ate together.

Then when the man, with his concubine and his servant, got up to leave, his father-in-law, the woman’s father, said, “Now look, it’s almost evening. Spend the night here; the day is nearly over. Stay and enjoy yourself. Early tomorrow morning you can get up and be on your way home.” 10 But, unwilling to stay another night, the man left and went toward Jebus(F) (that is, Jerusalem), with his two saddled donkeys and his concubine.

11 When they were near Jebus and the day was almost gone, the servant said to his master, “Come, let’s stop at this city of the Jebusites(G) and spend the night.”

12 His master replied, “No. We won’t go into any city whose people are not Israelites. We will go on to Gibeah.” 13 He added, “Come, let’s try to reach Gibeah or Ramah(H) and spend the night in one of those places.” 14 So they went on, and the sun set as they neared Gibeah in Benjamin.(I) 15 There they stopped to spend the night.(J) They went and sat in the city square,(K) but no one took them in for the night.

16 That evening(L) an old man from the hill country of Ephraim,(M) who was living in Gibeah (the inhabitants of the place were Benjamites), came in from his work in the fields. 17 When he looked and saw the traveler in the city square, the old man asked, “Where are you going? Where did you come from?”(N)

18 He answered, “We are on our way from Bethlehem in Judah to a remote area in the hill country of Ephraim where I live. I have been to Bethlehem in Judah and now I am going to the house of the Lord.[a](O) No one has taken me in for the night. 19 We have both straw and fodder(P) for our donkeys(Q) and bread and wine(R) for ourselves your servants—me, the woman and the young man with us. We don’t need anything.”

20 “You are welcome at my house,” the old man said. “Let me supply whatever you need. Only don’t spend the night in the square.” 21 So he took him into his house and fed his donkeys. After they had washed their feet, they had something to eat and drink.(S)

22 While they were enjoying themselves,(T) some of the wicked men(U) of the city surrounded the house. Pounding on the door, they shouted to the old man who owned the house, “Bring out the man who came to your house so we can have sex with him.(V)

23 The owner of the house went outside(W) and said to them, “No, my friends, don’t be so vile. Since this man is my guest, don’t do this outrageous thing.(X) 24 Look, here is my virgin daughter,(Y) and his concubine. I will bring them out to you now, and you can use them and do to them whatever you wish. But as for this man, don’t do such an outrageous thing.”

25 But the men would not listen to him. So the man took his concubine and sent her outside to them, and they raped her(Z) and abused her(AA) throughout the night, and at dawn they let her go. 26 At daybreak the woman went back to the house where her master was staying, fell down at the door and lay there until daylight.

27 When her master got up in the morning and opened the door of the house and stepped out to continue on his way, there lay his concubine, fallen in the doorway of the house, with her hands on the threshold. 28 He said to her, “Get up; let’s go.” But there was no answer. Then the man put her on his donkey and set out for home.

29 When he reached home, he took a knife(AB) and cut up his concubine, limb by limb, into twelve parts and sent them into all the areas of Israel.(AC) 30 Everyone who saw it was saying to one another, “Such a thing has never been seen or done, not since the day the Israelites came up out of Egypt.(AD) Just imagine! We must do something! So speak up!(AE)

The Israelites Punish the Benjamites

20 Then all Israel(AF) from Dan to Beersheba(AG) and from the land of Gilead came together as one(AH) and assembled(AI) before the Lord in Mizpah.(AJ) The leaders of all the people of the tribes of Israel took their places in the assembly of God’s people, four hundred thousand men(AK) armed with swords. (The Benjamites heard that the Israelites had gone up to Mizpah.) Then the Israelites said, “Tell us how this awful thing happened.”

So the Levite, the husband of the murdered woman, said, “I and my concubine came to Gibeah(AL) in Benjamin to spend the night.(AM) During the night the men of Gibeah came after me and surrounded the house, intending to kill me.(AN) They raped my concubine, and she died.(AO) I took my concubine, cut her into pieces and sent one piece to each region of Israel’s inheritance,(AP) because they committed this lewd and outrageous act(AQ) in Israel. Now, all you Israelites, speak up and tell me what you have decided to do.(AR)

All the men rose up together as one, saying, “None of us will go home. No, not one of us will return to his house. But now this is what we’ll do to Gibeah: We’ll go up against it in the order decided by casting lots.(AS) 10 We’ll take ten men out of every hundred from all the tribes of Israel, and a hundred from a thousand, and a thousand from ten thousand, to get provisions for the army. Then, when the army arrives at Gibeah[b] in Benjamin, it can give them what they deserve for this outrageous act done in Israel.” 11 So all the Israelites got together and united as one against the city.(AT)

12 The tribes of Israel sent messengers throughout the tribe of Benjamin, saying, “What about this awful crime that was committed among you?(AU) 13 Now turn those wicked men(AV) of Gibeah over to us so that we may put them to death and purge the evil from Israel.(AW)

But the Benjamites would not listen to their fellow Israelites. 14 From their towns they came together at Gibeah to fight against the Israelites. 15 At once the Benjamites mobilized twenty-six thousand swordsmen from their towns, in addition to seven hundred able young men from those living in Gibeah. 16 Among all these soldiers there were seven hundred select troops who were left-handed,(AX) each of whom could sling a stone at a hair and not miss.

17 Israel, apart from Benjamin, mustered four hundred thousand swordsmen, all of them fit for battle.

18 The Israelites went up to Bethel[c](AY) and inquired of God.(AZ) They said, “Who of us is to go up first(BA) to fight(BB) against the Benjamites?”

The Lord replied, “Judah(BC) shall go first.”

19 The next morning the Israelites got up and pitched camp near Gibeah. 20 The Israelites went out to fight the Benjamites and took up battle positions against them at Gibeah. 21 The Benjamites came out of Gibeah and cut down twenty-two thousand Israelites(BD) on the battlefield that day. 22 But the Israelites encouraged one another and again took up their positions where they had stationed themselves the first day. 23 The Israelites went up and wept before the Lord(BE) until evening,(BF) and they inquired of the Lord.(BG) They said, “Shall we go up again to fight(BH) against the Benjamites, our fellow Israelites?”

The Lord answered, “Go up against them.”

24 Then the Israelites drew near to Benjamin the second day. 25 This time, when the Benjamites came out from Gibeah to oppose them, they cut down another eighteen thousand Israelites,(BI) all of them armed with swords.

26 Then all the Israelites, the whole army, went up to Bethel, and there they sat weeping before the Lord.(BJ) They fasted(BK) that day until evening and presented burnt offerings(BL) and fellowship offerings(BM) to the Lord.(BN) 27 And the Israelites inquired of the Lord.(BO) (In those days the ark of the covenant of God(BP) was there, 28 with Phinehas son of Eleazar,(BQ) the son of Aaron, ministering before it.)(BR) They asked, “Shall we go up again to fight against the Benjamites, our fellow Israelites, or not?”

The Lord responded, “Go, for tomorrow I will give them into your hands.(BS)

29 Then Israel set an ambush(BT) around Gibeah. 30 They went up against the Benjamites on the third day and took up positions against Gibeah as they had done before. 31 The Benjamites came out to meet them and were drawn away(BU) from the city. They began to inflict casualties on the Israelites as before, so that about thirty men fell in the open field and on the roads—the one leading to Bethel(BV) and the other to Gibeah. 32 While the Benjamites were saying, “We are defeating them as before,”(BW) the Israelites were saying, “Let’s retreat and draw them away from the city to the roads.”

33 All the men of Israel moved from their places and took up positions at Baal Tamar, and the Israelite ambush charged out of its place(BX) on the west[d] of Gibeah.[e] 34 Then ten thousand of Israel’s able young men made a frontal attack on Gibeah. The fighting was so heavy that the Benjamites did not realize(BY) how near disaster was.(BZ) 35 The Lord defeated Benjamin(CA) before Israel, and on that day the Israelites struck down 25,100 Benjamites, all armed with swords. 36 Then the Benjamites saw that they were beaten.

Now the men of Israel had given way(CB) before Benjamin, because they relied on the ambush(CC) they had set near Gibeah. 37 Those who had been in ambush made a sudden dash into Gibeah, spread out and put the whole city to the sword.(CD) 38 The Israelites had arranged with the ambush that they should send up a great cloud of smoke(CE) from the city,(CF) 39 and then the Israelites would counterattack.

The Benjamites had begun to inflict casualties on the Israelites (about thirty), and they said, “We are defeating them as in the first battle.”(CG) 40 But when the column of smoke began to rise from the city, the Benjamites turned and saw the whole city going up in smoke.(CH) 41 Then the Israelites counterattacked,(CI) and the Benjamites were terrified, because they realized that disaster had come(CJ) on them. 42 So they fled before the Israelites in the direction of the wilderness, but they could not escape the battle. And the Israelites who came out of the towns cut them down there. 43 They surrounded the Benjamites, chased them and easily[f] overran them in the vicinity of Gibeah on the east. 44 Eighteen thousand Benjamites fell, all of them valiant fighters.(CK) 45 As they turned and fled toward the wilderness to the rock of Rimmon,(CL) the Israelites cut down five thousand men along the roads. They kept pressing after the Benjamites as far as Gidom and struck down two thousand more.

46 On that day twenty-five thousand Benjamite(CM) swordsmen fell, all of them valiant fighters. 47 But six hundred of them turned and fled into the wilderness to the rock of Rimmon, where they stayed four months. 48 The men of Israel went back to Benjamin and put all the towns to the sword, including the animals and everything else they found. All the towns they came across they set on fire.(CN)

John 3:22-4:3

John Testifies Again About Jesus

22 After this, Jesus and his disciples went out into the Judean countryside, where he spent some time with them, and baptized.(A) 23 Now John(B) also was baptizing at Aenon near Salim, because there was plenty of water, and people were coming and being baptized. 24 (This was before John was put in prison.)(C) 25 An argument developed between some of John’s disciples and a certain Jew over the matter of ceremonial washing.(D) 26 They came to John and said to him, “Rabbi,(E) that man who was with you on the other side of the Jordan—the one you testified(F) about—look, he is baptizing, and everyone is going to him.”

27 To this John replied, “A person can receive only what is given them from heaven. 28 You yourselves can testify that I said, ‘I am not the Messiah but am sent ahead of him.’(G) 29 The bride belongs to the bridegroom.(H) The friend who attends the bridegroom waits and listens for him, and is full of joy when he hears the bridegroom’s voice. That joy is mine, and it is now complete.(I) 30 He must become greater; I must become less.”[a]

31 The one who comes from above(J) is above all; the one who is from the earth belongs to the earth, and speaks as one from the earth.(K) The one who comes from heaven is above all. 32 He testifies to what he has seen and heard,(L) but no one accepts his testimony.(M) 33 Whoever has accepted it has certified that God is truthful. 34 For the one whom God has sent(N) speaks the words of God, for God[b] gives the Spirit(O) without limit. 35 The Father loves the Son and has placed everything in his hands.(P) 36 Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life,(Q) but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God’s wrath remains on them.

Jesus Talks With a Samaritan Woman

Now Jesus learned that the Pharisees had heard that he was gaining and baptizing more disciples than John(R) although in fact it was not Jesus who baptized, but his disciples. So he left Judea(S) and went back once more to Galilee.

Psalm 104:24-35

24 How many are your works,(A) Lord!
In wisdom you made(B) them all;
the earth is full of your creatures.(C)
25 There is the sea,(D) vast and spacious,
teeming with creatures beyond number—
living things both large and small.(E)
26 There the ships(F) go to and fro,
and Leviathan,(G) which you formed to frolic(H) there.(I)

27 All creatures look to you
to give them their food(J) at the proper time.
28 When you give it to them,
they gather it up;
when you open your hand,
they are satisfied(K) with good things.
29 When you hide your face,(L)
they are terrified;
when you take away their breath,
they die and return to the dust.(M)
30 When you send your Spirit,(N)
they are created,
and you renew the face of the ground.

31 May the glory of the Lord(O) endure forever;
may the Lord rejoice in his works(P)
32 he who looks at the earth, and it trembles,(Q)
who touches the mountains,(R) and they smoke.(S)

33 I will sing(T) to the Lord all my life;
I will sing praise to my God as long as I live.
34 May my meditation be pleasing to him,
as I rejoice(U) in the Lord.
35 But may sinners vanish(V) from the earth
and the wicked be no more.(W)

Praise the Lord, my soul.

Praise the Lord.[a](X)

Proverbs 14:22-23

22 Do not those who plot evil go astray?(A)
But those who plan what is good find[a] love and faithfulness.

23 All hard work brings a profit,
but mere talk leads only to poverty.
