Deuteronomy 34:1 - Joshua 2:24, Luke 13:22-14:6, Psalm 79:1-13, Proverbs 12:26

Today is the 10th day of April, welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I’m Brian, it’s great to be here with you today, as we move forward taking the next step together. And our next step actually leads us to the end of a book. We’ve been working through the Book of Deuteronomy for a while now. The last discourses of Moses and we have one short chapter left in the Book of Deuteronomy, which we’ll read today. And then we will transition into a new book, the Book of Joshua. And we will read the first couple of chapters of Joshua. And we’ll talk about Joshua when we get there, but let’s dive in and read this final chapter of the Book of Deuteronomy which is chapter 34.

Introduction to the Book of Joshua:

Okay so, that concludes the book of Deuteronomy, which also means we have concluded the Torah or the Pentateuch, which are the first five books of the Bible. And if you’re kind of checking off your days in the Daily Audio Bible app, then you’ll get a badge that tells you, you have read through the Torah, that we have moved through the Torah this year. And as we did that, we said goodbye to Moses. And so, this is the moment we’ve finished the Torah, and we said goodbye to Moses. So, as we move forward, we’re moving forward into a new generation and a new era, a new part of the story. Almost since the beginning of the year, like all the way back into the Book of Genesis, we started this journey toward a Land of Promise. In fact, we were there when it was promised. We followed the children of Israel all the way through their slavery in Egypt. Their freedom, their wilderness journey, their first attempt when they sent spies into the land, their further wandering in the wilderness, all the way to this point. And now, we are at the point where they’re ready again to cross the Jordan River into the Promised Land. And we’ll see that as we begin the book of Joshua, God won’t waste time affirming the promise to Joshua and Joshua won’t waste time in preparing the people to do what they’ve come to do, which is cross the Jordan into the Promised Land. And at this point in the story, the children of Israel, it’s been centuries and so this promise for this land, for this people, who are chosen by God to reveal Him to the nations, it is centuries old. So, it’s like mythic at this point and they’re right at the threshold, about to cross in. And as they cross over the Jordan River into the Promised Land, they have to remember everything that they learned in the wilderness. Because it was the wilderness that changed their identity from slaves, to chosen ones. They learned who God was, then how to obey God and how to organize themselves in such a way that would reveal God to the neighboring nations around them. And now they have to go into this land with the absolute faith that they haven’t had previously, that God will go before them and that He will give them the land. But we’ll see pretty quickly that they don’t just walk into the land and move in, they will have to contend for this promise, and they will have to be utterly dependent upon God to do it. They will have to collaborate in obedience to God. And in some cases, they will be collaborating with God against all the odds. And we’ll see God give instructions that seem counterintuitive, which happens in our lives, sometimes. They would need to be sensitive, and they would need to be obedient, just like we do. Nevertheless, we are about to cross the Jordan River with the children of Israel. Everyone is on the same page, and we will see a glorious era of the children of Israel as they cross into the Promised Land. Of course, we’ll also see that there are some hiccups along the way and some stumbles. This glorious era isn’t the only era, there are other things that happen, and we’ll watch them move into the Promised Land and begin to slide away in the very ways that they were absolutely, very clearly warned not to walk. But we’ll get to that soon enough. Now, let’s enjoy the journey as we begin, the Book of Joshua and we will read chapters 1 and 2, today.

Prayer:

Father, we thank You for Your word and this special day of completing the first five books in the Scriptures, the Torah, and moving into the Book of Joshua. We invite Your Holy Spirit to come, lead us into all truth, guide our steps, comfort us, correct us, lead us as Jesus was saying in the Gospels today, to the narrow door to God’s kingdom, lead us on the narrow path that leads to life. We pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.

Prayer and Encouragements:

Hey DAB, this is my first-time calling in. I want to lift up Your Little Songbird who had ear surgery and complained of tinnitus in her ears. Sister that is very real thing. And I too have some ringing in my ears. I’m a musician and enjoy making music to God’s glory. I ask that He would give you grace. Would He remind you any time your, you notice the ringing in your ears, remind you of His presence and His mercy. Lord, please remind Your Little Songbird that You were cursed for us, You are cursed and hung on a tree in our place. The chastisement that brought us peace was laid on You. We thank You for taking our sin upon Yourself. Thank You for Your abiding continued presence. Would You make it louder in our years than any other distraction in our world. In the name of Jesus. Amen.

Hey DAB family, this is Justin in Memphis. If you were listening in 2017, 18 you might remember Justin in Southern California that’s, that’s me now. I’m back. I haven’t been listening for several years. I started up again at the beginning of this year and glad to have this community back again. Please pray for me. My faith and my assurance has been on a downward slide ever since 2018. And lately I’m not really sure what I believe anymore, other than there’s a God who created me and loves me. I don’t know about any other, anything else. I don’t know about Jesus. I don’t know. I miss Jesus though. And so, just pray for me to find God again, to find truth, wherever that may be. But I can’t tell you have to pray but not pray that I come back to where I was, just that I find God’s truths wherever He leads me to it. So, thanks for listening.

Hello, DAB, this is New Envisioned Growth out of New York. I am calling because I just heard Beloved. She gave herself a name, she just gave herself a name, Beloved and I love it, Beloved. And your prayer at the end, on things you were saying at the end just resonated with mine right now on how we, you know, just make mistakes that we put ourselves in and that we go to God, knowing full and well that we, you know, put ourselves there. In your case you were saying you don’t really want to go to the Father, I am shameless, and I am the one who’s like help me. Help. Knowing good and well that I put myself in there. And it reminds me of like, little babies when they get toys in their head and then they drop and then they cry. And we pick it up for them and they drop it and now it’s a game. It becomes a game now. But I am so grateful that God is not like us because we’ll stop playing that game after a while and we’ll figure a way to kind of make it work for us. Or we’ll just have the baby cry. Right, so, now my prayer, when I go to God is just to help me change me. Because when I look at the situations that I put myself in, it’ll be the same type of spirit or thing that I’m dealing with in a different form. So, I’m still going to God, even though I make the mistake myself, but now I’m just asking for direction for God to pinpoint the common denominator in me and what the things that I’m dealing with. And I just pray that you find yours. So, thanks Belove, love the name, love you guys. Have a great day. Bye.

Hey guys, my names Garrett. It’s been a while since I’ve called in. Having some issues in my life lately and could really use your prayers. I’m dealing with some alcoholism and depression and just relationships that have failed. So, I really need some prayers and I need the Lord back in my life. I feel really guilty and just wanna be back and proud of the life that I’m living. I really would appreciate some prayers from you guys. Thank you. God bless.

Deuteronomy 34 - Joshua 2

Moses’s Death

34 Then Moses went up from the plains of Moab to Mount Nebo, to the top of Pisgah,(A) which faces Jericho, and the Lord showed him all the land: Gilead as far as Dan, all of Naphtali, the land of Ephraim and Manasseh, all the land of Judah as far as the Mediterranean[a] Sea, the Negev, and the plain in the Valley of Jericho, the City of Palms, as far as Zoar. The Lord then said to him, “This is the land I promised Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, ‘I will give it to your descendants.’(B) I have let you see it with your own eyes, but you will not cross into it.”

So Moses the servant of the Lord(C) died there in the land of Moab, according to the Lord’s word. He buried him[b] in the valley(D) in the land of Moab facing Beth-peor, and no one to this day knows where his grave is.(E) Moses was one hundred twenty years old when he died; his eyes were not weak, and his vitality had not left him. The Israelites wept for Moses in the plains of Moab thirty days.(F) Then the days of weeping and mourning for Moses came to an end.(G)

Joshua son of Nun was filled with the spirit of wisdom(H) because Moses had laid his hands on him.(I) So the Israelites obeyed him and did as the Lord had commanded Moses.(J) 10 No prophet has arisen again in Israel like Moses, whom the Lord knew face to face.(K) 11 He was unparalleled for all the signs and wonders the Lord sent him to do against the land of Egypt—to Pharaoh, to all his officials, and to all his land— 12 and for all the mighty acts of power and terrifying deeds that Moses performed in the sight of all Israel.(L)

Encouragement of Joshua

After the death of Moses(M) the Lord’s servant, the Lord spoke to Joshua son of Nun,(N) Moses’s assistant: “Moses my servant is dead.(O) Now you and all the people prepare to cross over the Jordan(P) to the land I am giving the Israelites. I have given you every place where the sole of your foot treads,(Q) just as I promised Moses. Your territory will be from the wilderness and Lebanon(R) to the great river, the Euphrates River—all the land of the Hittites(S)—and west to the Mediterranean Sea.(T) No one will be able to stand against you as long as you live.(U) I will be with you, just as I was with Moses. I will not leave you or abandon you.(V)

“Be strong and courageous,(W) for you will distribute the land I swore to their ancestors to give them as an inheritance.(X) Above all, be strong and very courageous to observe carefully the whole instruction my servant Moses commanded you.(Y) Do not turn from it to the right or the left, so that you will have success wherever you go. This book of instruction must not depart from your mouth;(Z) you are to meditate on[c] it day and night so that you may carefully observe everything written in it. For then you will prosper and succeed in whatever you do.(AA) Haven’t I commanded you: be strong and courageous?(AB) Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”

Joshua Prepares the People

10 Then Joshua commanded the officers of the people, 11 “Go through the camp and tell the people, ‘Get provisions ready for yourselves, for within three days you will be crossing the Jordan to go in and take possession of the land the Lord your God is giving you to inherit.’”(AC)

12 Joshua said to the Reubenites, the Gadites, and half the tribe of Manasseh,(AD) 13 “Remember what Moses the Lord’s servant commanded you when he said, ‘The Lord your God will give you rest, and he will give you this land.’(AE) 14 Your wives, dependents, and livestock may remain in the land Moses gave you on this side of the Jordan. But your best soldiers must cross over in battle formation[d] ahead of your brothers and help them 15 until the Lord gives your brothers rest, as he has given you, and they too possess the land the Lord your God is giving them. You may then return to the land of your inheritance(AF) and take possession of what Moses the Lord’s servant(AG) gave you on the east side of the Jordan.”

16 They answered Joshua, “Everything you have commanded us we will do, and everywhere you send us we will go. 17 We will obey you, just as we obeyed Moses in everything. Certainly the Lord your God will be with you, as he was with Moses.(AH) 18 Anyone who rebels against your order and does not obey your words in all that you command him, will be put to death. Above all, be strong and courageous!” (AI)

Spies Sent to Jericho

Joshua son of Nun secretly sent two men as spies(AJ) from the Acacia Grove,[e] saying, “Go and scout the land, especially Jericho.” So they left, and they came to the house of a prostitute named Rahab,(AK) and stayed there.

The king of Jericho was told, “Look, some of the Israelite men have come here tonight to investigate the land.” Then the king of Jericho sent word to Rahab and said, “Bring out the men who came to you and entered your house,(AL) for they came to investigate the entire land.”

But the woman had taken the two men and hidden them.(AM) So she said, “Yes, the men did come to me, but I didn’t know where they were from. At nightfall, when the city gate was about to close, the men went out, and I don’t know where they were going. Chase after them quickly, and you can catch up with them!” But she had taken them up to the roof and hidden them(AN) among the stalks of flax that she had arranged on the roof. The men pursued them along the road to the fords of the Jordan, and as soon as they left to pursue them, the city gate was shut.

The Promise to Rahab

Before the men fell asleep, she went up on the roof and said to them, “I know that the Lord has given you this land(AO) and that the terror of you has fallen on us,(AP) and everyone who lives in the land is panicking because of you.[f](AQ) 10 For we have heard how the Lord dried up the water of the Red Sea before you when you came out of Egypt,(AR) and what you did to Sihon and Og, the two Amorite kings you completely destroyed(AS) across the Jordan. 11 When we heard this, we lost heart,(AT) and everyone’s courage failed[g] because of you,(AU) for the Lord your God is God in heaven above and on earth below.(AV) 12 Now please swear to me by the Lord that you will also show kindness to my father’s family, because I showed kindness to you.(AW) Give me a sure sign[h] 13 that you will spare the lives of my father, mother, brothers, sisters, and all who belong to them, and save us from death.”

14 The men answered her, “We will give our lives for yours. If you don’t report our mission, we will show kindness and faithfulness to you when the Lord gives us the land.”

15 Then she let them down by a rope through the window, since she lived in a house that was built into the wall of the city. 16 “Go to the hill country so that the men pursuing you won’t find you,” she said to them. “Hide there for three days until they return; afterward, go on your way.”

17 The men said to her, “We will be free from this oath you made us swear, 18 unless, when we enter the land, you tie this scarlet cord to the window through which you let us down. Bring your father, mother, brothers, and all your father’s family into your house. 19 If anyone goes out the doors of your house, his death will be his own fault,(AX) and we will be innocent. But if anyone with you in the house should be harmed, his death will be our fault. 20 And if you report our mission, we are free from the oath you made us swear.”

21 “Let it be as you say,” she replied, and she sent them away. After they had gone, she tied the scarlet cord to the window.

22 So the two men went into the hill country and stayed there three days until the pursuers had returned. They searched all along the way, but did not find them. 23 Then the men returned, came down from the hill country, and crossed the Jordan. They went to Joshua son of Nun and reported everything that had happened to them. 24 They told Joshua, “The Lord has handed over the entire land to us. Everyone who lives in the land is also panicking because of us.”[i]

Luke 13:22-14:6

The Narrow Way

22 He went through one town and village after another, teaching and making his way to Jerusalem.(A) 23 “Lord,” someone asked him, “are only a few people going to be saved?” (B)

He said to them, 24 “Make every effort to enter through the narrow door,(C) because I tell you, many will try to enter and won’t be able 25 once the homeowner gets up and shuts the door.(D) Then you will stand outside and knock on the door, saying, ‘Lord, open up for us!’ He will answer you, ‘I don’t know you or where you’re from.’ 26 Then you will say, ‘We ate and drank in your presence, and you taught in our streets.’ 27 But he will say, ‘I tell you, I don’t know you or where you’re from. Get away from me,(E) all you evildoers!’ 28 There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth(F) in that place,(G) when you see Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and all the prophets in the kingdom of God,(H) but yourselves thrown out. 29 They will come from east and west, from north and south, to share the banquet[a] in the kingdom of God. 30 Note this: Some who are last will be first, and some who are first will be last.”(I)

Jesus and Herod Antipas

31 At that time some Pharisees came and told him, “Go, get out of here. Herod(J) wants to kill you.”(K)

32 He said to them, “Go tell that fox, ‘Look, I’m driving out demons and performing healings today and tomorrow, and on the third day I will complete my work.’[b](L) 33 Yet it is necessary that I(M) travel today, tomorrow, and the next day, because it is not possible for a prophet(N) to perish(O) outside of Jerusalem.

Jesus’s Lamentation over Jerusalem

34 “Jerusalem, Jerusalem,(P) who kills the prophets and stones(Q) those who are sent to her.(R) How often I wanted to gather your children(S) together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings,(T) but you were not willing!(U) 35 See, your house is abandoned to you.(V) I tell you, you will not see me until the time comes when[c] you say, ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord’!”[d](W)

A Sabbath Controversy

14 One Sabbath, when he went in to eat[e] at the house of one of the leading Pharisees,(X) they were watching him closely.(Y) There in front of him was a man whose body was swollen with fluid. In response, Jesus asked the law experts(Z) and the Pharisees, “Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath or not?”(AA) But they kept silent. He took the man, healed him, and sent him away. And to them, he said, “Which of you whose son or ox falls into a well, will not immediately pull him out on the Sabbath day?”(AB) They could find no answer to these things.

Psalm 79

Psalm 79

Faith amid Confusion

A psalm of Asaph.(A)

God, the nations have invaded your inheritance,
desecrated your holy temple,
and turned Jerusalem into ruins.(B)
They gave the corpses of your servants
to the birds of the sky for food,
the flesh of your faithful ones
to the beasts of the earth.(C)
They poured out their blood
like water all around Jerusalem,
and there was no one to bury them.(D)
We have become an object of reproach
to our neighbors,
a source of mockery and ridicule
to those around us.(E)

How long, Lord? Will you be angry forever?
Will your jealousy keep burning like fire?(F)
Pour out your wrath on the nations
that don’t acknowledge you,
on the kingdoms that don’t call on your name,(G)
for they have devoured Jacob
and devastated his homeland.(H)
Do not hold past iniquities[a] against us;
let your compassion come to us quickly,
for we have become very weak.(I)

God of our salvation, help us,(J)
for the glory of your name.
Rescue us and atone for our sins,
for your name’s sake.(K)
10 Why should the nations ask,
“Where is their God?” (L)
Before our eyes,
let vengeance for the shed blood of your servants
be known among the nations.(M)
11 Let the groans of the prisoners reach you;
according to your great power,
preserve those condemned to die.(N)

12 Pay back sevenfold to our neighbors(O)
the reproach they have hurled at you, Lord.(P)
13 Then we, your people, the sheep of your pasture,(Q)
will thank you forever;
we will declare your praise
to generation after generation.(R)

Deuteronomy 33:1-29, Luke 13:1-21, Psalms 78:65-72, Proverbs 12:25

Today is the 9th day of April welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I am Brian it is wonderful to be here with you today as we greet a new week. But it is wonderful to be here with you today as we celebrate and rejoice in the most important day in human history. Today is Easter Sunday, resurrection day. The hope of the world centers and is held together by the events that we observe and commemorate today, the resurrection of Jesus from the dead as the victorious one.

Song:

Keith Green – The Victor

Swallowed into earth’s dark womb
And death has triumphed
That’s what they say
But tried to hold him in the tomb
The son of life
Rose on the third day

Just look
The gates of hell
They’re falling
Crumbling from the inside out
He’s bursting through
The walls with laughter (hah!)
Listen to the angels shout

It is finished
He has done it
Life conquered death
Jesus Christ
Has won it

His plan of battle
You know it
He fooled them all
They led him off to prison to die
But as he entered hades hall
He broke those hellish chains with a cry

Just listen to those demons screaming
See him bruise the serpent’s head
The prisoners of hell
He’s redeeming (oh!)
All the power of death is dead

It is finished
He has done it
Life conquered death
Jesus Christ
Has won it

Just look
The gates of hell they’re falling
Crumbling from the inside out
He’s bursting through the walls with laughter (hah!)
Listen to the angel’s shout
(listen, oh, listen)

It is finished
He has done it
Life conquered death
Jesus Christ
Has won it

It is finished
He has done it
Life conquered death
Jesus Christ
Has won it

So, this is our last full day in the book of Deuteronomy and today we will read chapter 33.

Prayer:

Father, we thank You for Your word. Jesus, we thank You for Your victory. Today on Easter Sunday as we celebrate the world over billions of us rejoice in Your victory and Your offer of salvation to the people of the earth. We are eternally grateful, and we are at a place again that we find ourselves so often where there aren’t the right words that can adequately say what we need to say. And, so, we once again realize that we say what we need to say through our lives as we humble ourselves before You and take this offer, this gift of eternal life, and as we live our earthly lives completely different ending up in a completely different place than we would have without You. The words aren’t adequate. Thank You seems so less than what needs to be said. You are the victorious Savior. You would not abandon us. You have rescued us. There is nothing about us that has not been touched and transformed and this continues on and on as we are sanctified and made into Your image. We rejoice in You and yes, we thank You with all of our hearts. We thank You.

Song:

Keith Green – Easter Song

Hear the bells ringing, they’re singing
That You can be born again
Here the bells ringing, they’re singing
Christ is risen from the dead

The angel up on the tombstone
Said, ? He has risen, just as He said
Quickly now, go tell His disciples
That Jesus Christ is no longer dead

Joy to the world
He has risen, Hallelujah
He’s risen, Hallelujah
He’s risen, Hallelujah, Hallelujah

Hear the bells ringing, they’re singing
That You can be healed right now
Hear the bells ringing, they’re singing
Christ, He will reveal it now

The angels, they all surround us
And they are ministering Jesus’s power
Quickly now, reach out and receive it
For this could be your glorious hour

Joy to the world
He has risen, Hallelujah
He’s risen, Hallelujah
He’s risen, Hallelujah, Hallelujah

The angel up on the tombstone
Said, ? He has risen, just as He said
Quickly now, go tell His disciples
That Jesus Christ is no longer dead

Joy to the world
He has risen, Hallelujah
He’s risen, Hallelujah
He’s risen, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah

Deuteronomy 33

Moses’s Blessings

33 This is the blessing that Moses, the man of God, gave the Israelites before his death.(A) He said:

The Lord came from Sinai
and appeared to them from Seir;(B)
he shone on them from Mount Paran(C)
and came with ten thousand holy ones,[a]
with lightning[b] from his right hand[c] for them.(D)
Indeed he loves the people.[d](E)
All your[e] holy ones are in your hand,
and they assemble[f] at your feet.
Each receives your words.
Moses gave us instruction,
a possession for the assembly of Jacob.
So he became King in Jeshurun[g](F)
when the leaders of the people gathered
with the tribes of Israel.

Let Reuben live and not die
though his people become few.(G)

He said this about Judah:

Lord, hear Judah’s cry and bring him to his people.
He fights for his cause[h] with his own hands,
but may you be a help against his foes.

He said about Levi:

Your Thummim and Urim(H) belong to your faithful one;[i]
you tested him at Massah
and contended with him at the Waters of Meribah.(I)
He said about his father and mother,
“I do not regard them.”
He disregarded his brothers
and didn’t acknowledge his sons,
for they kept your word
and maintained your covenant.(J)
10 They will teach your ordinances to Jacob
and your instruction to Israel;(K)
they will set incense before you
and whole burnt offerings on your altar.
11 Lord, bless his possessions,[j]
and accept the work of his hands.
Break the back[k] of his adversaries and enemies,
so that they cannot rise again.

12 He said about Benjamin:

The Lord’s beloved rests[l] securely on him.
He[m] shields him all day long,
and he rests on his shoulders.[n]

13 He said about Joseph:

May his land be blessed by the Lord
with the dew of heaven’s bounty
and the watery depths that lie beneath;(L)
14 with the bountiful harvest from the sun
and the abundant yield of the seasons;
15 with the best products of the ancient mountains
and the bounty of the eternal hills;(M)
16 with the choice gifts of the land
and everything in it;
and with the favor of him
who appeared[o] in the burning bush.(N)
May these rest on the head of Joseph,
on the brow of the prince of his brothers.(O)
17 His firstborn bull has[p] splendor,
and horns like[q] those of a wild ox;
he gores all the peoples with them
to the ends of the earth.
Such are the ten thousands of Ephraim,
and such are the thousands of Manasseh.

18 He said about Zebulun:

Rejoice, Zebulun, in your journeys,
and Issachar, in your tents.
19 They summon the peoples to a mountain;
there they offer acceptable sacrifices.
For they draw from the wealth of the seas
and the hidden treasures of the sand.(P)

20 He said about Gad:

The one who enlarges Gad’s territory
will be blessed.
He lies down like a lion
and tears off an arm or even a head.(Q)
21 He chose the best part for himself,
because a ruler’s portion was assigned there for him.
He came with the leaders of the people;
he carried out the Lord’s justice
and his ordinances for Israel.(R)

22 He said about Dan:

Dan is a young lion,
leaping out of Bashan.(S)

23 He said about Naphtali:

Naphtali, enjoying approval,
full of the Lord’s blessing,
take[r] possession to the west and the south.

24 He said about Asher:

May Asher[s] be the most blessed of the sons;
may he be the most favored among his brothers
and dip his foot in olive oil.(T)
25 May the bolts of your gate be iron and bronze,
and your strength last as long as you live.

26 There is none like the God of Jeshurun,
who rides the heavens to your aid,
the clouds in his majesty.(U)
27 The God of old is your dwelling place,(V)
and underneath are the everlasting arms.
He drives out the enemy before you
and commands, “Destroy!”
28 So Israel dwells securely;(W)
Jacob lives untroubled[t](X)
in a land of grain and new wine;
even his skies drip with dew.(Y)
29 How happy you are, Israel!
Who is like you,
a people saved by the Lord?
He is the shield that protects you,
the sword you boast in.
Your enemies will cringe before you,(Z)
and you will tread on their backs.[u](AA)

Luke 13:1-21

Repent or Perish

13 At that time,(A) some people came and reported to him about the Galileans(B) whose blood Pilate(C) had mixed with their sacrifices. And he[a] responded to them, “Do you think that these Galileans were more sinful than all the other Galileans because they suffered these things?(D) No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all perish as well. Or those eighteen that the tower in Siloam(E) fell on and killed—do you think they were more sinful than all the other people who live in Jerusalem? No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all perish as well.”

The Parable of the Barren Fig Tree

And he told this parable:(F) “A man had a fig tree that was planted in his vineyard. He came looking for fruit on it and found none.(G) He told the vineyard worker, ‘Listen, for three years I have come looking for fruit on this fig tree and haven’t found any. Cut it down!(H) Why should it even waste the soil?’(I)

“But he replied to him, ‘Sir,[b] leave it this year also, until I dig around it and fertilize it.(J) Perhaps it will produce fruit next year, but if not, you can cut it down.’”

Healing a Daughter of Abraham

10 As he was teaching in one of the synagogues on the Sabbath,(K) 11 a woman was there who had been disabled by a spirit[c](L) for over eighteen years. She was bent over and could not straighten up at all.[d] 12 When Jesus saw her, he called out to her,[e] “Woman, you are free of your disability.” 13 Then he laid his hands on her,(M) and instantly she was restored(N) and began to glorify God.(O)

14 But the leader of the synagogue, indignant(P) because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath, responded by telling the crowd, “There are six days when work should be done;(Q) therefore come on those days and be healed and not on the Sabbath day.”

15 But the Lord answered him and said, “Hypocrites!(R) Doesn’t each one of you untie his ox(S) or donkey from the feeding trough(T) on the Sabbath and lead it to water?(U) 16 Satan(V) has bound(W) this woman, a daughter of Abraham,(X) for eighteen years—shouldn’t she be untied from this bondage[f] on the Sabbath day?”

17 When he had said these things, all his adversaries(Y) were humiliated,(Z) but the whole crowd was rejoicing over all the glorious things he was doing.(AA)

The Parables of the Mustard Seed and of the Leaven

18 He said, therefore, “What is the kingdom of God like,(AB) and what can I compare it to? 19 It’s like a mustard seed that a man took and sowed in his garden. It grew and became a tree, and the birds of the sky nested in its branches.”

20 Again he said, “What can I compare the kingdom of God(AC) to? 21 It’s like leaven[g](AD) that a woman took and mixed into fifty pounds[h] of flour until all of it was leavened.”

Footnotes:

  2. 13:8 Or Lord
  3. 13:11 Lit had a spirit of disability
  4. 13:11 Or straighten up completely

Psalm 78:65-72

65 The Lord awoke as if from sleep,
like a warrior from the effects of wine.(A)
66 He beat back his foes;
he gave them lasting disgrace.(B)
67 He rejected the tent of Joseph
and did not choose the tribe of Ephraim.
68 He chose instead the tribe of Judah,
Mount Zion, which he loved.(C)
69 He built his sanctuary like the heights,
like the earth that he established forever.(D)
70 He chose David his servant
and took him from the sheep pens;(E)
71 he brought him from tending ewes
to be shepherd over his people Jacob—
over Israel, his inheritance.(F)
72 He shepherded them with a pure heart
and guided them with his skillful hands.(G)

Deuteronomy 32:28-52, Luke 12:35-59, Psalm 78:56-64, Proverbs 12:24

Today is the eighth day of April, welcome to the Daily audio Bible. I am Brian and it is wonderful to be here with you today, as we reach the conclusion of the first full week of this month. And I’m glad that we could do this together as we gather around the Global Campfire and move forward on our epic journey through the Scriptures and through the year in our lives together as we share our stories and share our lives in community. And so, our next step forward, leads us back into the book of Deuteronomy, couple more days in the book of Deuteronomy and we’ll be moving forward. Where we find ourselves today, and where were picking up is in the middle of a song, a song that the Lord told Moses to teach to the people, a song that was to stand as a witness against them because it had been told to Moses that when we got into the promised land. They were going to fall away, and that this song would stand as a remembrance, as a reminder, as a witness that they had been instructed and that they knew what they were supposed to do. And so, we’re picking up in the middle, Deuteronomy chapter 32 verse 28 versus 28 through 52, today.

Prayer:

Father, we thank You for another week in Your word. We thank You for this first full week in this month of April in Your word and we look back, now that we’re moving into the second quarter of the year, and we see, we see the power that is in the Scriptures, we see the way that it advises and guides and directs us, the way that it challenges us, the way that it invites us to look at things deeper. And we love You and we thank You for this gift. We thank You for the gift of one another. That we can come around this Global Campfire every day and gather together and feast upon Your word together. It’s like every day we get to have a spiritual meal together and we come around this place and have this spiritual meal, we are in it together in community, and we thank You for the gift of one another. Holy Spirit, come, lead us into all truth, transform us that we may be agents of change in this world then begins in our own hearts and spills out into our families and our communities. May we reveal your kingdom, may we reveal our relationship with you. May the light shine in the darkness. And may the light be within us. We pray in Jesus name. Amen.

Prayer and Encouragements:

Good morning, fellow DABers. This is His Little Song Bird from Hilo, Alberta. We just wanna lift up a young fella that called in today. I believe it’s April 3rd. Father God, I want to lift up Asher to You. You see his plight, every time he reads the word, Lord, he feels like, like it’s landing on rocky soil but it’s not taking root. Father, I ask that You would hear his cry, that You would bless him with good soil in his heart, Father God. That any time that he hears Your word that not only would it find good soil but the roots would go deep, deep into his spirit, Father God. And that Your word would also go deep into his remembrance. Lord, I thank You so much that he is asking for help in this area. We can lift him up to You, Father God. He’s Your child and You love him so much. And like Your word says, if a worldly father knows how to give his child good gifts, how much more would Your Heavenly Father give you good gifts. So, Lord, I ask that You would just bless this young man and just grow his heart exponentially with Your word, and fill it full. Lord, I ask that You pour Your spirit out upon him and I thank You for everything that already started to do. In Jesus name I pray. Amen.

Good morning, Daily Audio Bible Family. This is KB from Florida. And I’m calling to request prayers for my friend. He got into a bad car accident last night. He wasn’t wearing his seat belt; he flew out the windshield and he was airlifted to the trauma center where he is not responding. His colon and bladder, a lot of things are damaged and he’s not breathing on his own and not. I know how good our God is miracles that he could work and I’m asking and I’m begging for you guys to pray with me and for my brother Chico, Brian, Brian is his name. We call him Chico. I just need your strength and I need your prayers. Please let him get through this. I know our God works miracles all the time. I really need, he really needs you. I don’t need you right now, he needs you right now. I just need strength to be there for him. I’m leaving work right now. Going to go see him at the trauma center, where they say that he’s on life support. And I know our God is gonna make a way. But I need your prayers. Please and thank you.

Hey, Daily Audio Bible brother and sisters. My name is Civil Sheik, I’m calling from Hawaii to ask prayers for my family. Me and my seven children and my wife. We’re really in a hard financial situation. And twelve years, right now, we don’t have __ we don’t have house, we don’t have hot water, really suffering on our lock. We need the hands of God to help us. We need the hands of God to give us some blessing. Please, brothers and sisters, help us in prayer to God, for help us and give us some financial situation help. In the name of Jesus. Thank you very much. Have a nice day.

Hey DAB Family. Kathy from Western New York here. I have an urgent prayer request. It’s a heartbreaking one. But my friend, my dear, dear friend Kim lost her husband to COVID last year. He was 60. And she’s 58. Her oldest son has been struggling with mental health issues for years. And he has been in a rough stage for the past 6 weeks. And in his great need, he drove down to El Paso, Texas and confronted Homeland Security with an altercation. And he’s gone. So, I ask you to please pray for my friend Kim and this young mans brother, younger brother, and his grandparents and his aunt and the rest of his family because they were very, very close. And I just know that this family is amazing. And she’s a believer, Kim is a believer. And she’s leaning on the Lord, but she is so broken. And she desperately needs all of us DAB Family to pray for her and shore her up and stand in the gap with her. Thank you, I love you all, I pray for you each and every day as I listen to the prayers. Bye.

The Daily Audio Bible Reading for Saturday April 8, 2023 (NIV)

Deuteronomy 32:28-52

28 Israel is a nation lacking sense
with no understanding at all.(A)
29 If only they were wise, they would comprehend this;
they would understand their fate.
30 How could one pursue a thousand,
or two put ten thousand to flight,(B)
unless their Rock had sold them,
unless the Lord had given them up?(C)
31 But their “rock” is not like our Rock,
as even our enemies concede.
32 For their vine is from the vine of Sodom
and from the fields of Gomorrah.
Their grapes are poisonous;
their clusters are bitter.
33 Their wine is serpents’ venom,
the deadly poison of cobras.(D)

34 “Is it not stored up with me,
sealed up in my vaults?
35 Vengeance and retribution belong to me.[a](E)
In time their foot will slip,
for their day of disaster is near,
and their doom is coming quickly.”
36 The Lord will indeed vindicate his people
and have compassion on his servants(F)
when he sees that their strength is gone
and no one is left—slave or free.[b]
37 He will say, “Where are their gods,
the ‘rock’ they found refuge in?
38 Who ate the fat of their sacrifices
and drank the wine of their drink offerings?
Let them rise up and help you;
let it[c] be a shelter for you.
39 See now that I alone am he;
there is no God but me.(G)
I bring death and I give life;
I wound and I heal.
No one can rescue anyone from my power.(H)
40 I raise my hand to heaven and declare:
As surely as I live forever,
41 when I sharpen my flashing sword,
and my hand takes hold of judgment,
I will take vengeance on my adversaries
and repay those who hate me.
42 I will make my arrows drunk with blood
while my sword devours flesh—
the blood of the slain and the captives,
the heads of the enemy leaders.”[d]

43 Rejoice, you nations, concerning his people,[e](I)
for he will avenge the blood of his servants.[f]
He will take vengeance on his adversaries;[g](J)
he will purify his land and his people.[h]

44 Moses came with Joshua[i] son of Nun and recited all the words of this song in the presence of the people. 45 After Moses finished reciting all these words to all Israel, 46 he said to them, “Take to heart all these words I am giving as a warning to you today,(K) so that you may command your children to follow all the words of this law carefully.(L) 47 For they are not meaningless words to you but they are your life,(M) and by them you will live long in the land you are crossing the Jordan to possess.”

Moses’s Impending Death

48 On that same day the Lord spoke to Moses,(N) 49 “Go up Mount Nebo(O) in the Abarim range in the land of Moab, across from Jericho, and view the land of Canaan I am giving the Israelites as a possession. 50 Then you will die on the mountain that you go up, and you will be gathered to your people,(P) just as your brother Aaron died on Mount Hor and was gathered to his people.(Q) 51 For both of you broke faith with me among the Israelites at the Waters of Meribath-kadesh in the Wilderness of Zin by failing to treat me as holy in their presence. 52 Although from a distance you will view the land that I am giving the Israelites, you will not go there.”(R)

Luke 12:35-59

Ready for the Master’s Return

35 “Be ready for service[a] and have your lamps lit.(A) 36 You are to be like people waiting for their master(B) to return from the wedding banquet(C) so that when he comes and knocks, they can open the door for him at once.(D) 37 Blessed will be those servants the master finds alert(E) when he comes. Truly I tell you, he will get ready,[b] have them recline at the table, then come and serve them.(F) 38 If he comes in the middle of the night, or even near dawn,[c] and finds them alert, blessed are those servants. 39 But know this: If the homeowner had known at what hour the thief was coming,(G) he would not have let his house be broken into. 40 You also be ready,(H) because the Son of Man(I) is coming at an hour you do not expect.”(J)

Rewards and Punishment

41 “Lord,” Peter asked, “are you telling this parable to us or to everyone?”

42 The Lord said, “Who then is the faithful and sensible manager(K) his master will put in charge of his household servants to give them their allotted food(L) at the proper time? 43 Blessed is that servant whom the master finds doing his job when he comes. 44 Truly I tell you, he will put him in charge of all his possessions. 45 But if that servant says in his heart, ‘My master is delaying his coming,’(M) and starts to beat the male and female servants, and to eat and drink and get drunk, 46 that servant’s master will come on a day he does not expect him and at an hour he does not know. He will cut him to pieces[d] and assign him a place with the unfaithful.[e] 47 And that servant who knew his master’s will and didn’t prepare himself or do it[f] will be severely beaten.(N) 48 But the one who did not know and did what deserved(O) punishment will receive a light beating. From everyone who has been given much, much will be required; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, even more will be expected.[g](P)

Not Peace but Division

49 “I came(Q) to bring fire on the earth, and how I wish it were already set ablaze! 50 But I have a baptism to undergo,(R) and how it consumes(S) me until it is finished!(T) 51 Do you think that I came here to bring peace on the earth?(U) No, I tell you, but rather division. 52 From now on, five in one household will be divided: three against two, and two against three.

53 They will be divided, father against son,
son against father,
mother against daughter,
daughter against mother,
mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law,

Interpreting the Time

54 He also said to the crowds,(W) “When you see a cloud rising in the west, right away you say, ‘A storm is coming,’ and so it does.(X) 55 And when the south wind is blowing, you say, ‘It’s going to be hot,’ and it is. 56 Hypocrites!(Y) You know how to interpret the appearance of the earth and the sky, but why don’t you know how to interpret this present time?(Z)

Settling Accounts

57 “Why don’t you judge for yourselves what is right?(AA) 58 As you are going with your adversary(AB) to the ruler, make an effort to settle with him on the way. Then he won’t drag you before the judge,(AC) the judge hand you over to the bailiff, and the bailiff throw you into prison.(AD) 59 I tell you, you will never get out of there until you have paid the last penny.”[i](AE)

Deuteronomy 31:1-32:27

Joshua Takes Moses’s Place

31 Then Moses continued to speak these[a] words to all Israel, saying, “I am now 120 years old;(A) I can no longer act as your leader.[b] The Lord has told me, ‘You will not cross the Jordan.’(B) The Lord your God is the one who will cross ahead of you.(C) He will destroy these nations before you, and you will drive them out. Joshua is the one who will cross ahead of you, as the Lord has said.(D) The Lord will deal with them as he did Sihon and Og, the kings of the Amorites, and their land when he destroyed them.(E) The Lord will deliver them over to you, and you must do to them exactly as I have commanded you. Be strong and courageous;(F) don’t be terrified or afraid of them. For the Lord your God is the one who will go with you;(G) he will not leave you or abandon you.”(H)

Moses then summoned Joshua and said to him in the sight of all Israel, “Be strong and courageous, for you will go with[c] this people into the land the Lord swore to give to their ancestors.(I) You will enable them to take possession of it. The Lord is the one who will go before you.(J) He will be with you; he will not leave you or abandon you.(K) Do not be afraid or discouraged.”

Moses wrote down this law and gave it to the priests, the sons of Levi, who carried the ark of the Lord’s covenant, and to all the elders of Israel. 10 Moses commanded them, “At the end of every seven years, at the appointed time in the year of debt cancellation,(L) during the Festival of Shelters,(M) 11 when all Israel assembles in the presence of the Lord your God at the place he chooses,(N) you are to read this law aloud before all Israel.(O) 12 Gather the people—men, women, dependents, and the resident aliens within your city gates—so that they may listen and learn to fear(P) the Lord your God and be careful to follow all the words of this law. 13 Then their children(Q) who do not know the law will listen and learn to fear the Lord your God as long as you live in the land you are crossing the Jordan to possess.”

14 The Lord said to Moses, “The time of your death is now approaching. Call Joshua and present yourselves at the tent of meeting so that I may commission him.” When Moses and Joshua went and presented themselves at the tent of meeting, 15 the Lord appeared at the tent in a pillar of cloud,(R) and the cloud stood at the entrance to the tent.(S)

16 The Lord said to Moses, “You are about to rest with your ancestors,(T) and these people will soon prostitute themselves with the foreign gods(U) of the land they are entering. They will abandon me(V) and break the covenant(W) I have made with them. 17 My anger will burn against them on that day;(X) I will abandon them and hide my face from them so that they will become easy prey.(Y) Many troubles and afflictions will come to them. On that day they will say, ‘Haven’t these troubles come to us because our God is no longer with us?’ 18 I will certainly hide my face on that day because of all the evil they have done by turning to other gods. 19 Therefore write down this song(Z) for yourselves and teach it to the Israelites; have them sing it,[d] so that this song may be a witness for me against the Israelites. 20 When I bring them into the land I swore to give their ancestors, a land flowing with milk and honey,(AA) they will eat their fill(AB) and prosper.[e] They will turn to other gods and worship them, despising me(AC) and breaking my covenant.(AD) 21 And when many troubles and afflictions come to them, this song will testify against them, because[f] their descendants will not have forgotten it. For I know what they are prone to do,[g] even before I bring them into the land I swore to give them.” 22 So Moses wrote down this song on that day and taught it to the Israelites.

23 The Lord commissioned Joshua son of Nun, “Be strong and courageous, for you will bring the Israelites into the land I swore to them, and I will be with you.”(AE)

Moses Warns the People

24 When Moses had finished writing down on a scroll every single word of this law, 25 he commanded the Levites who carried the ark of the Lord’s covenant, 26 “Take this book of the law and place it beside the ark of the covenant of the Lord your God so that it may remain there as a witness against you. 27 For I know how rebellious and stiff-necked you are. If you are rebelling against the Lord now, while I am still alive, how much more will you rebel after I am dead! 28 Assemble all your tribal elders and officers before me so that I may speak these words directly to them and call heaven and earth as witnesses against them.(AF) 29 For I know that after my death you will become completely corrupt and turn from the path I have commanded you. Disaster will come to you in the future, because you will do what is evil in the Lord’s sight, angering him with what your hands have made.”(AG) 30 Then Moses recited aloud every single word of this song to the entire assembly of Israel:

Song of Moses

32 Pay attention, heavens, and I will speak;
listen, earth, to the words from my mouth.(AH)
Let my teaching fall like rain
and my word settle like dew,
like gentle rain on new grass
and showers on tender plants.
For I will proclaim the Lord’s name.(AI)
Declare the greatness of our God!
The Rock(AJ)—his work is perfect;
all his ways are just.(AK)
A faithful God,(AL) without bias,
he is righteous and true.

His people have acted corruptly toward him;(AM)
this is their defect[h]—they are not his children
but a devious and crooked generation.(AN)
Is this how you repay the Lord,
you foolish and senseless people?(AO)
Isn’t he your Father and Creator?[i](AP)
Didn’t he make you and sustain you?
Remember the days of old;
consider the years of past generations.
Ask your father, and he will tell you,
your elders, and they will teach you.
When the Most High gave the nations their inheritance[j]
and divided the human race,(AQ)
he set the boundaries of the peoples(AR)
according to the number of the people of Israel.[k]
But the Lord’s portion is his people,
Jacob, his own inheritance.(AS)

10 He found him in a desolate land,
in a barren, howling wilderness;
he surrounded him, cared for him,(AT)
and protected him as the pupil of his eye.(AU)
11 He watches over[l] his nest like an eagle
and hovers over his young;
he spreads his wings, catches him,
and carries him on his feathers.(AV)
12 The Lord alone led him,
with no help from a foreign god.
13 He made him ride on the heights of the land(AW)
and eat the produce of the field.
He nourished him with honey from the rock
and oil from flinty rock,
14 curds from the herd and milk from the flock,
with the fat of lambs,
rams from Bashan,(AX) and goats,
with the choicest grains of wheat;
you drank wine from the finest grapes.[m]

15 Then[n] Jeshurun[o](AY) became fat and rebelled—
you became fat, bloated, and gorged.
He abandoned the God who made him
and scorned the Rock of his salvation.
16 They provoked his jealousy with different gods;
they enraged him with detestable practices.(AZ)
17 They sacrificed to demons, not God,
to gods they had not known,
new gods that had just arrived,
which your ancestors did not fear.(BA)
18 You ignored the Rock who gave you birth;
you forgot the God who gave birth to you.

19 When the Lord saw this, he despised them,
angered by his sons and daughters.
20 He said, “I will hide my face from them;(BB)
I will see what will become of them,
for they are a perverse generation—
unfaithful children.
21 They have provoked my jealousy
with what is not a god;[p]
they have enraged me with their worthless idols.(BC)
So I will provoke their jealousy
with what is not a people;[q]
I will enrage them with a foolish nation.(BD)
22 For fire has been kindled because of my anger
and burns to the depths of Sheol;(BE)
it devours the land and its produce,
and scorches the foundations of the mountains.

23 “I will pile disasters on them;
I will use up my arrows against them.
24 They will be weak from hunger,
ravaged by pestilence and bitter plague;
I will unleash on them wild beasts with fangs,
as well as venomous snakes that slither in the dust.
25 Outside, the sword will take their children,
and inside, there will be terror;
the young man and the young woman will be killed,
the infant and the gray-haired man.(BF)

26 “I would have said: I will cut them to pieces[r]
and blot out the memory of them from mankind,(BG)
27 if I had not feared provocation from the enemy,
or feared that these foes might misunderstand
and say, ‘Our own hand has prevailed;
it wasn’t the Lord who did all this.’”

Luke 12:8-34

Acknowledging Christ

“And I say to you, anyone who acknowledges(A) me before others, the Son of Man(B) will also acknowledge him before the angels of God,(C) but whoever denies me before others will be denied before the angels of God.(D) 10 Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven,(E) but the one who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit(F) will not be forgiven. 11 Whenever(G) they bring you before synagogues and rulers and authorities,(H) don’t worry(I) about how you should defend(J) yourselves or what you should say. 12 For the Holy Spirit will teach you at that very hour what must be said.”(K)

The Parable of the Rich Fool

13 Someone from the crowd said to him, “Teacher,(L) tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.”

14 “Friend,”[a] he said to him, “who appointed me a judge or arbitrator over you?” 15 He then told them, “Watch out and be on guard(M) against all greed,(N) because one’s life is not in the abundance of his possessions.”(O)

16 Then he told them a parable:(P) “A rich(Q) man’s land was very productive. 17 He thought to himself, ‘What should I do, since I don’t have anywhere to store my crops? 18 I will do this,’ he said. ‘I’ll tear down my barns and build bigger ones and store all my grain and my goods there. 19 Then I’ll say to myself, “You have many goods stored up for many years. Take it easy;(R) eat, drink, and enjoy yourself.”’(S)

20 “But God said to him, ‘You fool!(T) This very night your life is demanded of you. And the things you have prepared—whose will they be?’(U)

21 “That’s how it is with the one who stores up treasure(V) for himself and is not rich toward God.”(W)

The Cure for Anxiety

22 Then he said to his disciples, “Therefore I tell you,(X) don’t worry about your life, what you will eat; or about the body, what you will wear.(Y) 23 For life is more than food and the body more than clothing. 24 Consider the ravens:(Z) They don’t sow or reap; they don’t have a storeroom or a barn; yet God feeds them.(AA) Aren’t you worth much more than the birds? 25 Can any of you add one moment to his life span[b] by worrying?(AB) 26 If then you’re not able to do even a little thing, why worry about the rest?

27 “Consider how the wildflowers grow: They don’t labor or spin thread. Yet I tell you, not even Solomon(AC) in all his splendor was adorned like one of these. 28 If that’s how God clothes the grass, which is in the field today and is thrown into the furnace tomorrow, how much more will he do for you—you of little faith?(AD) 29 Don’t strive for what you should eat and what you should drink, and don’t be anxious. 30 For the Gentile world eagerly seeks(AE) all these things, and your Father(AF) knows that you need them.

31 “But seek his kingdom,(AG) and these things will be provided for you.(AH) 32 Don’t be afraid,(AI) little flock,(AJ) because your Father delights(AK) to give you the kingdom.(AL) 33 Sell(AM) your possessions and give to the poor.(AN) Make money-bags(AO) for yourselves that won’t grow old, an inexhaustible treasure(AP) in heaven, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys. 34 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.(AQ)

Psalm 78:32-55

32 Despite all this, they kept sinning
and did not believe his wondrous works.(A)
33 He made their days end in futility,
their years in sudden disaster.(B)
34 When he killed some of them,
the rest began to seek him;
they repented and searched for God.(C)
35 They remembered that God was their rock,
the Most High God, their Redeemer.(D)
36 But they deceived him with their mouths,
they lied to him with their tongues,(E)
37 their hearts were insincere toward him,
and they were unfaithful to his covenant.(F)
38 Yet he was compassionate;
he atoned for their iniquity
and did not destroy them.
He often turned his anger aside
and did not unleash[a] all his wrath.(G)
39 He remembered that they were only flesh,
a wind that passes and does not return.(H)

40 How often they rebelled against him
in the wilderness
and grieved him in the desert.
41 They constantly tested God(I)
and provoked the Holy One of Israel.(J)
42 They did not remember his power shown
on the day he redeemed them from the foe,(K)
43 when he performed his miraculous signs in Egypt
and his wonders in the territory of Zoan.(L)
44 He turned their rivers into blood,
and they could not drink from their streams.(M)
45 He sent among them swarms of flies,(N)
which fed on them,
and frogs, which devastated them.(O)
46 He gave their crops to the caterpillar
and the fruit of their labor to the locust.(P)
47 He killed their vines with hail
and their sycamore fig trees with a flood.
48 He handed over their livestock to hail
and their cattle to lightning bolts.(Q)
49 He sent his burning anger against them:
fury, indignation, and calamity—
a band of deadly messengers.[b](R)
50 He cleared a path for his anger.
He did not spare them from death
but delivered their lives to the plague.(S)
51 He struck all the firstborn(T) in Egypt,
the first progeny of the tents of Ham.(U)
52 He led his people out like sheep
and guided them like a flock in the wilderness.(V)
53 He led them safely, and they were not afraid;
but the sea covered their enemies.(W)
54 He brought them to his holy territory,
to the mountain his right hand acquired.(X)
55 He drove out nations before them.(Y)
He apportioned their inheritance by lot
and settled the tribes of Israel in their tents.(Z)

21 No disaster overcomes the righteous,(A)
but the wicked are full of misery.

but a foolish heart publicizes stupidity.(D)

Today is the 7th day of April welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I am Brian it is great to be here with you around the Global Campfire today as we gather and take the next step forward together. We are navigating our way through holy week. Today is Good Friday and we can talk about that in a little bit, but we need to take the next step forward. And our next steps forward together leads us back out into the book of Deuteronomy. A few more days and we will close the book of Deuteronomy and move forward. That will and our reading of the Torah this year but we’re not there yet. Moses still has a few final things to say. Deuteronomy being the final discourses of Moses to the children of Israel before…well…before a new leader takes over and leads the children of Israel forward. And we’re gonna hear about that leader today. So, let’s dive in. Deuteronomy chapter 31 verse 1 through 32 verse 27 today.

Commentary:

Okay, we gotta talk about what Jesus is teaching us today from the gospel of Luke. But first, just keeping up with Deuteronomy. What…what we saw today was this…a transfer of power and now Joshua is being elevated as the leader in place of Moses to lead the children of Israel forward in their story as they cross the Jordan River into the promised land.

Then when we get into the gospel of Luke. There’s another requested transfer of power because Jesus is just standing there teaching and somebody yells out of the crowd, “tell my brother to give me my share of the inheritance”, right? Can’t you command a transfer of power here so that I can get what I believe that I deserve? And that was the impetus for Jesus to begin teaching about the circumstance right before him, which launches into a teaching about money and…and possessions. And our cultures are obsessed with both of those things. So, we should pause, step back and pay close attention to what Jesus is teaching us because what He’s teaching us, it is directly related to some of the greatest anxieties in our lives - our money and our stuff. So, Jesus uses an illustration which He is famous for. He does this a lot. He talks about a rich man that had all lot. He had a lot of everything. He had so much he didn’t know where to put it all and he decided that to do is tear down his barns and build bigger ones so that he could have more, like more room for more stuff. But what the guy didn’t know was that he was being a fool, that he was…he was going to die that night. He had put his trust in his stuff and his stuff and his money were not going to help later that evening when his life would end. And Jesus said that’s how it is when a person has material riches but is not rich in his relationship with God. And then He went on to teach that our pursuit of these things, our…our chasing after money or our chasing after our wardrobe or…or food, these kinds of things can become obsessions that pull us and all kinds of weird places. Places where we are constantly compete…competing with one another, comparing to one another to get our sense of well-being. And we can only get a sense of lack because we’re told constantly by the culture that buy this and that problem will be fixed, buy this and that other problem will be perfected. And this ultimately just kind of pulls us into a hurricane of worry and we just…we just spin in circles not knowing exactly what’s going on. Jesus is teaching this to people a couple of thousand years ago, but this is immediate because things haven’t changed so much. We do worry about our money. We worry about if we…if we look presentable, if we look fashionable, if we look like we fit into the culture. We can spend an hour skimming through the Internet trying to find a place to eat. We have so many choices. And Jesus is saying that’s not all there is to life. That’s not what this is about. And He then invited everyone to slow down and look around. Look at the birds. They’re not worried, and yet they have what they need. Look at the flowers. They’re temporary but they’re beautiful and they magnify the glory of God. And I quote from Jesus, “that’s the way God clothes the grass in the field. Today it’s alive and tomorrow is thrown into the incinerator. So, how much more will he clothe you people who have so little faith? Basically, we’re invited to slow down, step back and look at what’s going on, this hurricane of worry that we live in because we don’t think that we have enough of anything. And, so, we obsess about what we do have and try to hoard more. This isn’t going anywhere but in a circle. We’re just spinning. And while we’re spinning in the dizziness of it all we’re forgetting that we actually have a source, a provider who knows who we are and what we need. And if He can care for the flowers the way that He does, can He not care for us? Jesus said, and I quote, “can any of you add an hour to your life by worrying? If you can’t do a small thing like that, why worry about the other things?” He goes on to say, “don’t concern yourself about what you will eat or drink. Quit worrying about these things. Everyone in the world is concerned about these things but your Father knows you need them. Rather be concerned about His kingdom and then these things will be provided for you. Don’t be afraid, little flock, your Father is pleased to give you the kingdom.” So, what do we do here? What are we supposed to do? We can see this. We can feel it, but how do we live into it, exactly like we were talking about the beginning. We have to transfer the power. We’re not in control. And us trying to be in control is what has a spinning like a hurricane in circles. And we know. Like we know. Surrender. Surrender to God. We…like this is a tenant of the faith. We understand this. But understanding it and doing it are different. We’re being invited into freedom. What we’re gonna have to do is transfer the authority, the power. What we’re gonna have to do is have faith and trust God. And that doesn’t mean like trust God and then obsess about trusting God until He comes like…until He comes through. It’s about trusting God as a way of life, as a lifestyle. And, so, we begin to do that by getting in the habit of it until it becomes routine for us, until it is the way that we live. We trust God. It’s our first reaction. We have faith and trust in the Lord our God Almighty, who owns all of this. And when I say all this, like I’m referring to this planet but have you seen what they’re seeing in outer space from this new telescope into deep space? God owns all of that too. And, so, as we begin to trust the Lord for what we need, the burdens that will be lifted and the time that will be reclaimed and the energy that we can reallocate away from worry and stress can change our lives. And when we feel like we’re spinning may we just remember…may we remember all of what Jesus is teaching us but let’s just remember the last thing that He was saying, “don’t be afraid little flock. Your Father is pleased to give you the kingdom.”

Prayer:

Father, we invite You into that. We confess our lack of trust and our lack of faith. We confess that we do obsess about the circumstances of life. And You haven’t asked us to be oblivious to what’s going on. You’ve asked us not to worry about what’s going on, to trust You with what’s going on. And we confess that we start down that road until we think that You’re just not strong or powerful enough. We…we typically believe You are, but You won’t. You’re…You’re going to withhold and we’re gonna have to jump in there and finish this. That’s the point we actually need to have faith. That’s the point we actually need to trust You. Holy Spirit, come and teach us how to do this. May we remember the words, “don’t be afraid little flock. Your Father is pleased to give You the kingdom.” May we carry that with us as we face the circumstances of any given day. Lead us forward into freedom we pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.

Announcements:

Okay, so also. I mean we had all of that to talk about. That’s what the Bible wrote for us into our lives today to talk about but also today is a very special day on the Christian calendar. Today is Good Friday. And this is the day that we…we commemorate the crucifixion of Jesus. And not only His crucifixion, but His death, that He died. We have this day on the Christian calendar, and we know what this day means. It’s just so often we…we kinda blow through this day so that we can get to Sunday because we want to celebrate. And, so, we even have a hard time with…with Good Friday celebrations even because we’re celebrating death and that kinda creates a dissonance that we don’t know what to do with and that’s kind of the point. That’s kind of the point. We’ve gone through a season. It's…it’s called Lent and many people observe it. We talked about it back on Ash Wednesday when…when Lent started. We were just getting back from Israel. And I remember Ash Wednesday barely. But I remember it specifically because we were just getting back from Israel and the jet lag was so severe. So, we’ve been going through that season, a season of repentance, a season of sitting with the fact that sin leads somewhere. It’s a path that goes somewhere. It leads to death and destruction. So, we sit with that. We sit with an open heart and open hands with God and just invite the Holy Spirit to rearrange us to put us in a place where we can appreciate what He’s done for us, make Him rearrange the things, remove things from our lives, insert things into our lives, move things around in our lives. We spend the season moving toward that contemplating the cost. And, so, today is the cost. Like it all leads to this. We want to blow through this so that we can celebrate the resurrection which we will do, but it led us here. This came first. Jesus willingly allowed His freedom to be taken from Him in the garden of Gethsemane. He willingly took the lies and the verbal and physical abuse upon himself as he was tried. He carried those things upon Himself, all of our sin upon Himself and took it to the cross and died. Like, that’s the thing. He died for those things. And, so, Good Friday doesn’t really leave us with any room for jumping up and down and it’s a joyous thing. It leaves us in a place where we have to observe what it cost to give us Easter. And, so, I encourage you, whether you’ll be attending a Good Friday worship event of some sort today to commemorate Good Friday and enter into that in some sort of corporate way or whether you’re not. I encourage you to take some personal time today of reflection. This is the day that we honor the fact that Jesus died. This is the day that we honor the fact that Jesus died for me and for you. And as we go through this day, we’re not left with anything, we’re waiting for Sunday. Jesus was laying in a tomb. His body was cooling off. He was dead. It seemed as if all hope was lost and that’s where we are. He’s dead and there’s nothing we can do about it. And, so, we hope. For us we know what we are hoping in and we will rejoice on Sunday. For them, for Jesus friends they had to hope against hope, because Jesus was dead, and they saw His body. May we spend some time in contemplation over that scene today.

Deuteronomy 29:1-30:20, Luke 11:37-12:7, Psalm 78:1-31, Proverbs 12:19-20

Today is the sixth day of April, welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I am Brian, and today and every day, it is wonderful to be here with you as we gather around the Global Campfire and let go of whatever else is going on, just for a few minutes. Give ourselves permission to allow the peace of the Lord, wash into our lives, along with the Scriptures. So, it’s great to be here as we take the next step forward, and obviously the next step forward leads us back to where we left off, and that happens to be currently the Book of Deuteronomy. Although, we are getting close to the end of the Book of Deuteronomy, we’re not there yet though. Today, Deuteronomy chapters 29 and 30.

Commentary:

Okay so, we have a handful of days left in our time in the Book of Deuteronomy and in our time in the Torah for this year. And so, work on rounding the corner, and Moses has been going through all of the life and times of the children of Israel since they left Egypt. Just reminding them over, in all these different ways, over and over, the faithfulness of the Lord, how they got here, how patient and compassionate God has been toward them. And in today’s reading, Moses basically tells them, look, you have no excuse for not following God. Maybe we should just pause right there and take that on board because neither do we. I quote from Moses today, “This command I’m giving you today isn’t too hard for you or beyond your reach. It’s not in heaven. You don’t have to ask who will go to heaven and get the commands so we can hear and obey it, this command is not on the other side of the sea. You don’t have to ask who’s going across the sea together for us so that we can hear and obey it. No, these words are very near you, they’re in your mouth and in your heart so that you will obey them.” He’s basically telling them, you know what you’re supposed to do, you know where to go from here. It’s not a mystery, you don’t have to go search it out. It is right before your eyes. It is, I’m telling you, it’s right here, right now. And then Moses invokes heaven and earth to be witnesses to what they would choose, and he offered them the choice, life or death, prosperity or destruction. Let’s pause there for a second. What would you choose? I’m going for life and prosperity, I guess, if those are the choices, if it’s life or death, I’m choosing life. If it’s prosperity or destruction, I’m choosing prosperity, right. And anybody would choose these things. And yet heaven and earth are still standing as witnesses to the choices that we make, and the status of our lives are the evidence of the choices that we’ve made. So, Moses didn’t say I’m giving you life and prosperity, he’s saying I’m giving you a choice, choose life. So, what we can understand is that it isn’t gonna just happen. It’s a choice, every decision we make is a choice. Are we choosing the pathway of life. Are we choosing the path, the narrow path, that leads to life, as Jesus referred to it. Yesterday, we were talking about words and about that, that little beat that is between a reaction. Like that little moment where we usually react to things and fall in the ruts and get ourselves into trouble with our words, but if we would take one second and take one breath and call on the Holy Spirit to show us what to do and what to say, that we can save ourselves a lot of foolishness. We would stop using our tongue like a sword. Today, we have another opportunity to just consider the way that we react to things. In terms of choosing life, knowing that we have to choose this path in our thoughts and words and deeds, by what we do, by what we do not do. So, if we could take that beat and not react, we have a second to say will this bring life or death. Will this draw me closer to Jesus or will I be walking in a different direction? Moses told the children of Israel that this isn’t something that’s too hard for them. So, we have to take that on board. This is not too hard for us, it’s not hidden in heaven, so that somebody has to go get it so that we can know. It’s not a mystery that’s hidden on the far side of the sea, so that somebody has to go get it. It’s right here in our hearts and we are constantly making choices and we are choosing life, or we are not choosing life. The choice is ours. Moses laid out the outcomes for both choices, we can go back and review those, it won’t be hard to make the choice when you’re making a choice when we’re making choice between blessing and cursing. Let’s choose life today and let’s double up on watching our words today. Like, we can get a thing going here, where we’re bringing nothing but good and life and good news into the world and we would be right where were supposed to be. Choose life today, think about it.

Prayer:

And Holy Spirit, as we think about it, we invite You into our thoughts and our words and our deeds that we may be able to see the narrow path that leads to life, that we may be able to choose life. It’s not too hard for us and it’s not a mystery hidden, it’s right here. We know the difference between right and wrong. Lead us on the path that leads to life. We pray, in the name of Jesus, we ask. Amen.

Prayer and Encouragements:

Hey, DAB Family, this is your sister, Ashley, from California. And I just listened to today, April 2nds on recording and I wanted to pray for Little Song Bird and also for my sweet sister who called about her parents. Okay, so just like one of our other brothers says, okay Holy Spirit, let’s roll. Father God, thank You so much for this community. Thank You for the ability to join together and to stand in the gap and that You, Jesus, are our advocate. And that Holy Spirit, You are the one that intercedes for us and prays for us, when we don’t even know the words to say. And I wanna pray and thank You for the surgery for Little Song Bird here. I thank You, Lord, that they, that her hearing is being restored and but I wanna ask You for the healing of the tinnitus. Lord, please help relieve that pain and suffering. And if you can’t relieve it, Lord, and take it away, then please help Little Song Bird, to be able to manage it and to be able to cope with it and to trust You with it. And I also want to pray for Ari, who is my sister, who was struggling with her job and then she’s also struggling now with her parents. Father God, we pray that she would put her trust in You and that she would trust that she would lay these burdens down at Your feet, at the cross. So that, Lord, she knows that You are taking care of it and that she will praise You throughout it. And it is only in Your name, Jesus, that we pray. Amen. I love you DAB Family. Today is Palm Sunday so Hosannah. Deliver us Lord.

Hello, my DAB family, this is Jamie in New Jersey, Standing on the Word of God. I humbly ask you, please pray with me. Dear Father in Heaven, Your word is true, and Your promises are faithful. Your word is trustworthy and worth of all praise. In Your word we find the support we need to carry on through life’s challenges and difficulties. We gather the strength we need to endure the hardships that come into our lives. You are faithful and just in all that You do. Your promises are unbreakable. By Your power, we are able to endure all things by pressing into Your word and by striving to live as You have commanded. We honor peace and contentment in every circumstance. When difficulties strike fear into our hearts we know, we can come to You for help. We entrust our lives to You. We need not be afraid, for there is nothing any mere human can do to us. Let Your word give us understanding. Lead us into Your righteousness that we know Your will and direction for our lives. Strengthen us to persevere on the right course, knowing that though we stumble and fall, You will always be there to help us get back up. We pray in Jesus name. Amen. Thank you for praying with me, my brothers and sisters. I love each and every one of you. Have a good night.

Hey DAB Family, this is Anna in the Trenches. My husband got an infection in his leg. It turned into an abscess. He ended up having surgery. It’s been about a week since he’s been up and around. Right now, he’s still at the hospital and should be coming home in a couple days. I just need prayers for his leg to heal, for him to take it easy, so that his leg can heal. And I’m having trouble holding down the fort. We have two kids, we home school. Not see a whole lot of that happening right now. And a disabled son that involves total care on my part. And I struggle with pain and fatigue and I’m trying to take care of everything by myself. But it’s hard. And people want to help me, but I don’t know how to, I don’t know what to tell them to do. And so, can you just pray for me, please, and for my husband, for our family. None of this is probably making the kids feel real great. I have a 12-year-old son and an 8-year-old daughter. Then my disabled son is 18. But anyway, but I don’t think he knows what’s going on. Just pray for us please. Thank you, I pray for you guys. Love you all. Bye.

Hello Daily Audio Bible Family. I come to you thanking God. Lord, I come to you asking You for prayer, Father God. I’m praying to You, Father God, asking You, Father God, and thanking You, Lord, for all the blessing You bestowed upon us. Lord, I pray for all the people that have addictions. Addictions to drugs, addictions to alcohol, addictions, sexual addictions, any addictions, Father God. I come to You, asking Lord, that You take the desire of these addictions away from those that have it, Father God. Knowing I also come to You, praying for healing, Father God. Please, Lord, heal all of us that need healing. Heal cancer, Father God. Heal glaucoma in the eyes. Heal whatever needs healing, Lord, even if You need to do a miracle. Your still a miracle worker, Father God. You may need to do it through the doctors, whichever way, Father God. We just ask for Your healing, Father God. We also ask that You heal marriages, Father God. Lord, we’ve had testimonies of how you have healed. We want You to heal other ones that have not been healed, Father God. We want You to take the married couples, Father God, help them in any way that they need help to get it, Father God. Lord, we just thank You for everything that You do for all of us, this community and our families, Lord, that call in and those that pray for each other and those that just listen, Lord. We ask Father God, that You help us keep You first in all that we do, Father God. That we make Godly, wise choices in everything that we do. We bring everything to You. Put all our trust in You, Father God. Knowing that we also ask that You give us Your wisdom, Your favor, Your grace and Your mercy. Give us discernment, Father God, it’s around us but nothing but Godly, wise people. Lord, please, I just pray to You and Your precious Son, Jesus name. And I thank You in advance for all the many blessings that You’re gonna restore before us, Lord. In Your precious …

Deuteronomy 29-30

Renewing the Covenant

29 These are the words of the covenant(A) that the Lord commanded Moses to make with the Israelites in the land of Moab, in addition to the covenant he had made with them at Horeb.(B) Moses summoned all Israel and said to them, “You have seen with your own eyes(C) everything the Lord did in Egypt to Pharaoh, to all his officials, and to his entire land. You saw with your own eyes the great trials and those great signs and wonders.(D) Yet to this day the Lord has not given you a mind to understand, eyes to see, or ears to hear.(E) I led you forty years in the wilderness; your clothes and the sandals on your feet did not wear out;(F) you did not eat food or drink wine or beer—so that you might know that I am the Lord your God.(G) When you reached this place, King Sihon of Heshbon and King Og of Bashan came out against us in battle, but we defeated them.(H) We took their land and gave it as an inheritance to the Reubenites, the Gadites, and half the tribe of Manasseh.(I) Therefore, observe the words of this covenant(J) and follow them, so that you will succeed in everything you do.(K)

10 “All of you are standing today before the Lord your God—your leaders, tribes, elders, officials, all the men of Israel, 11 your dependents, your wives, and the resident aliens in your camps who cut your wood and draw your water— 12 so that you may enter into the covenant of the Lord your God, which he is making with you today, so that you may enter into his oath 13 and so that he may establish you today as his people and he may be your God as he promised you and as he swore to your ancestors Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.(L) 14 I am making this covenant and this oath not only with you, 15 but also with those who are standing here with us today in the presence of the Lord our God and with those who are not here today.

Abandoning the Covenant

16 “Indeed, you know how we lived in the land of Egypt and passed through the nations where you traveled. 17 You saw their abhorrent images and idols made of wood, stone, silver, and gold, which were among them.(M) 18 Be sure there is no man, woman, clan, or tribe among you today whose heart turns away from the Lord our God to go and worship the gods of those nations. Be sure there is no root among you bearing poisonous and bitter fruit.(N) 19 When someone hears the words of this oath, he may consider himself exempt,[a] thinking, ‘I will have peace even though I follow my own stubborn heart.’ This will lead to the destruction of the well-watered land as well as the dry land. 20 The Lord will not be willing to forgive him. Instead, his anger and jealousy will burn against that person, and every curse written in this scroll will descend on him. The Lord will blot out his name under heaven,(O) 21 and single him out for harm from all the tribes of Israel, according to all the curses of the covenant written in this book of the law.

22 “Future generations of your children who follow you and the foreigner who comes from a distant country will see the plagues of that land and the sicknesses the Lord has inflicted on it. 23 All its soil will be a burning waste of sulfur and salt, unsown, producing nothing, with no plant growing on it, just like the fall of Sodom and Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboiim, which the Lord demolished in his fierce anger.(P) 24 All the nations will ask, ‘Why has the Lord done this to this land? Why this intense outburst of anger?’ 25 Then people will answer, ‘It is because they abandoned the covenant of the Lord, the God of their ancestors, which he had made with them when he brought them out of the land of Egypt. 26 They began to serve other gods, bowing in worship to gods they had not known(Q)—gods that the Lord had not permitted them to worship.(R) 27 Therefore the Lord’s anger burned against this land, and he brought every curse written in this book on it. 28 The Lord uprooted them from their land in his anger, rage, and intense wrath, and threw them into another land where they are today.’ 29 The hidden things belong to the Lord our God, but the revealed things belong to us and our children forever, so that we may follow all the words of this law.

Returning to the Lord

30 “When all these things happen to you—the blessings and curses I have set before you—and you come to your senses while you are in all the nations where the Lord your God has driven you,(S) and you and your children return to the Lord your God and obey him with all your heart and all your soul(T) by doing[b] everything I am commanding you today, then he will restore your fortunes,[c](U) have compassion on you, and gather you again from all the peoples where the Lord your God has scattered you.(V) Even if your exiles are at the farthest horizon, he will gather you and bring you back from there.(W) The Lord your God will bring you into the land your ancestors possessed, and you will take possession of it.(X) He will cause you to prosper and multiply you more than he did your ancestors.(Y) The Lord your God will circumcise your heart(Z) and the hearts of your descendants, and you will love him with all your heart and all your soul so that you will live.(AA) The Lord your God will put all these curses on your enemies who hate and persecute you. Then you will again obey him and follow all his commands I am commanding you today. The Lord your God will make you prosper abundantly in all the work of your hands,(AB) your offspring,[d] the offspring of your livestock, and the produce of your land. Indeed, the Lord will again delight in your prosperity, as he delighted in that of your ancestors, 10 when you obey the Lord your God by keeping his commands and statutes that are written in this book of the law and return to him with all your heart and all your soul.

Choose Life

11 “This command that I give you today is certainly not too difficult or beyond your reach. 12 It is not in heaven so that you have to ask, ‘Who will go up to heaven, get it for us, and proclaim it to us so that we may follow it?’ 13 And it is not across the sea so that you have to ask, ‘Who will cross the sea, get it for us, and proclaim it to us so that we may follow it?’ 14 But the message is very near you, in your mouth and in your heart, so that you may follow it.(AC) 15 See, today I have set before you life and prosperity, death and adversity.(AD) 16 For[e] I am commanding you today to love the Lord your God, to walk in his ways, and to keep his commands, statutes, and ordinances, so that you may live[f] and multiply, and the Lord your God may bless you in the land you are entering to possess. 17 But if your heart turns away and you do not listen and you are led astray to bow in worship to other gods and serve them, 18 I tell you today that you will certainly perish and will not prolong your days in the land you are entering to possess across the Jordan. 19 I call heaven and earth as witnesses against you today that I have set before you life and death, blessing and curse. Choose life(AE) so that you and your descendants may live, 20 love the Lord your God, obey him, and remain faithful[g] to him. For he is your life, and he will prolong your days as you live in the land the Lord swore to give to your ancestors(AF) Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.”

Religious Hypocrisy Denounced

37 As he was speaking, a Pharisee(A) asked him to dine with him. So he went in and reclined at the table. 38 When the Pharisee saw this, he was amazed that he did not first perform the ritual washing[a](B) before dinner.(C) 39 But the Lord said to him, “Now you Pharisees clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside you are full of greed(D) and evil.(E) 40 Fools!(F) Didn’t he who made the outside make the inside too? 41 But give from what is within to the poor,[b](G) and then everything is clean(H) for you.

42 “But woe(I) to you Pharisees! You give a tenth[c](J) of mint, rue, and every kind of herb, and you bypass[d] justice(K) and love for God.[e](L) These things you should have done without neglecting the others.

43 “Woe to you Pharisees! You love the front seat(M) in the synagogues(N) and greetings in the marketplaces.

44 “Woe to you![f] You are like unmarked graves; (O) the people who walk over them don’t know it.”

45 One of the experts in the law(P) answered him, “Teacher, when you say these things you insult us too.”

46 Then he said, “Woe also to you experts in the law! You load people with burdens(Q) that are hard to carry, and yet you yourselves don’t touch these burdens with one of your fingers.(R)

47 “Woe to you! You build tombs[g] for the prophets,(S) and your fathers killed(T) them. 48 Therefore, you are witnesses(U) that you approve[h](V) the deeds of your fathers, for they killed them, and you build their monuments.[i] 49 Because of this, the wisdom of God(W) said, ‘I will send them prophets and apostles,(X) and some of them they will kill and persecute,’(Y) 50 so that this generation(Z) may be held responsible for the blood of all the prophets shed since the foundation of the world[j](AA) 51 from the blood of Abel(AB) to the blood of Zechariah,(AC) who perished between the altar and the sanctuary.

“Yes, I tell you, this generation will be held responsible.[k]

52 “Woe to you experts in the law! You have taken away the key to knowledge.(AD) You didn’t go in yourselves, and you hindered(AE) those who were trying to go in.”

53 When he left there,[l] the scribes and the Pharisees began to oppose(AF) him fiercely and to cross-examine him about many things; 54 they were lying in wait(AG) for him to trap him in something he said.[m](AH)

Beware of Religious Hypocrisy

12 Meanwhile, a crowd of many thousands came together, so that they were trampling(AI) on one another. He began to say to his disciples first,(AJ) “Be on your guard(AK) against the leaven[n](AL) of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.(AM) There is nothing covered that won’t be uncovered,(AN) nothing hidden that won’t be made known.(AO) Therefore, whatever you have said in the dark will be heard in the light, and what you have whispered in an ear in private rooms(AP) will be proclaimed on the housetops.(AQ)

Fear God

“I say to you, my friends,(AR) don’t fear(AS) those who kill the body, and after that can do nothing more. But I will show you the one to fear: Fear(AT) him who has authority to throw people into hell(AU) after death. Yes, I say to you, this is the one to fear! Aren’t five sparrows sold for two pennies?[o] Yet not one of them is forgotten in God’s sight.(AV) Indeed, the hairs of your head are all counted. Don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.

Psalm 78:1-31

Psalm 78

Lessons from Israel’s Past

A Maskil of Asaph.(A)

My people, hear my instruction;
listen to the words from my mouth.(B)
I will declare wise sayings;
I will speak mysteries from the past(C)
things we have heard and known
and that our ancestors have passed down to us.(D)
We will not hide them from their children,
but will tell a future generation
the praiseworthy acts of the Lord,
his might, and the wondrous works
he has performed.(E)
He established a testimony in Jacob
and set up a law in Israel,
which he commanded our ancestors
to teach to their children(F)
so that a future generation—
children yet to be born—might know.
They were to rise and tell their children(G)
so that they might put their confidence in God
and not forget God’s works,
but keep his commands.(H)
Then they would not be like their ancestors,
a stubborn and rebellious generation,
a generation whose heart was not loyal
and whose spirit was not faithful to God.(I)

The Ephraimite archers turned back
on the day of battle.(J)
10 They did not keep God’s covenant
and refused to live by his law.(K)
11 They forgot what he had done,
the wondrous works he had shown them.(L)
12 He worked wonders in the sight of their ancestors
in the land of Egypt, the territory of Zoan.(M)
13 He split the sea and brought them across;
the water stood firm like a wall.(N)
14 He led them with a cloud by day
and with a fiery light throughout the night.(O)
15 He split rocks in the wilderness
and gave them drink as abundant as the depths.(P)
16 He brought streams out of the stone
and made water flow down like rivers.(Q)

17 But they continued to sin against him,
rebelling in the desert against the Most High.(R)
18 They deliberately[a] tested God,
demanding the food they craved.(S)
19 They spoke against God, saying,
“Is God able to provide food in the wilderness?
20 Look! He struck the rock and water gushed out;
torrents overflowed.(T)
But can he also provide bread
or furnish meat for his people?” (U)
21 Therefore, the Lord heard and became furious;
then fire broke out against Jacob,
and anger flared up against Israel(V)
22 because they did not believe God
or rely on his salvation.(W)
23 He gave a command to the clouds above
and opened the doors of heaven.(X)
24 He rained manna for them to eat;
he gave them grain from heaven.(Y)
25 People[b] ate the bread of angels.[c]
He sent them an abundant supply of food.(Z)
26 He made the east wind blow in the skies
and drove the south wind by his might.(AA)
27 He rained meat on them like dust,
and winged birds like the sand of the seas.
28 He made them fall in the camp,
all around the tents.(AB)
29 The people ate and were completely satisfied,
for he gave them what they craved.(AC)
30 Before they had turned from what they craved,
while the food was still in their mouths,
31 God’s anger flared up against them,
and he killed some of their best men.
He struck down Israel’s fit young men.(AD)

Proverbs 12:19-20

19 Truthful lips endure forever,
but a lying tongue, only a moment.(A)

20 Deceit is in the hearts of those who plot evil,
but those who promote peace have joy.(B)
