Exodus 29:1-30:10

Instructions for Ordaining Priests

The Lord said to Moses:

29 When you ordain one of Aaron’s sons as my priest, choose a young bull and two rams that have nothing wrong with them. Then from your finest flour make three batches of dough without yeast. Shape some of it into larger loaves, some into smaller loaves mixed with olive oil, and the rest into thin wafers brushed with oil. Put all of this bread in a basket and bring it when you come to sacrifice the three animals to me.

Bring Aaron and his sons to the entrance of the sacred tent and have them wash themselves. Dress Aaron in the priestly shirt, the robe that goes under the sacred vest, the vest itself, the breastpiece, and the sash. Put on his turban with its narrow strip of engraved gold and then ordain him by pouring olive oil on his head.

Next, dress Aaron’s sons in their special shirts and caps and their sashes,[a] then ordain them, because they and their descendants will always be priests.

10 Lead the bull to the entrance of the sacred tent, where Aaron and his sons will lay their hands on its head. 11 Kill the bull near my altar in front of the tent. 12 Use a finger to smear some of its blood on each of the four corners of the altar and pour out the rest of the blood on the ground next to the altar. 13 Then take the fat from the animal’s insides, as well as the lower part of the liver and the two kidneys with their fat, and send them up in smoke on the altar. 14 But the meat, the skin, and the food still in the bull’s stomach must be burned outside the camp as an offering to ask forgiveness for the sins of the priests.[b]

15 Bring one of the rams to Aaron and his sons and have them lay their hands on its head. 16 Kill the ram and splatter its blood against all four sides of the altar. 17 Cut up the ram, wash its insides and legs, and lay all of its parts on the altar, including the head. 18 Then make sure that the whole animal goes up in smoke with a smell that pleases me.

19 Bring the other ram to Aaron and his sons and have them lay their hands on its head. 20 Kill the ram and place some of its blood on Aaron’s right ear lobe, his right thumb, and the big toe of his right foot. Do the same for each of his sons and splatter the rest of the blood against the four sides of the altar. 21 Then take some of the blood from the altar, mix it with the oil used for ordination, and sprinkle it on Aaron and his clothes, and also on his sons and their clothes. This will show that they and their clothes have been dedicated to me.

22 This ram is part of the ordination service. So remove its right hind leg,[c] its fat tail, the fat on its insides, as well as the lower part of the liver and the two kidneys with their fat. 23 Take one loaf of each kind of bread[d] from the basket, 24 and put this bread, together with the meat, into the hands of Aaron and his sons. Then they will lift it all up[e] to show that it is dedicated to me. 25 After this, the meat and bread are to be placed on the altar and sent up in smoke with a smell that pleases me.

26 You may eat the choice ribs from this second ram, but you must first lift them up[f] to show that this meat is dedicated to me.

27-28 In the future, when anyone from Israel offers the ribs and a hind leg of a ram either to ordain a priest or to ask for my blessing, the meat belongs to me, but it may be eaten by the priests. This law will never change.

29-30 After Aaron’s death, his priestly clothes are to be handed down to each descendant who succeeds him as high priest, and these clothes must be worn during the seven-day ceremony of ordination.

31 Boil the meat of the ordination ram in a sacred place, 32 then have Aaron and his sons eat it together with the three kinds of bread [g] at the entrance to the sacred tent. 33 At their ordination, a ceremony of forgiveness was performed for them with this sacred food, and only they have the right to eat it. 34 If any of the sacred food is left until morning, it must be burned up.

35 Repeat this ordination ceremony for Aaron and his sons seven days in a row, just as I have instructed you. 36 Each day you must offer a bull as a sacrifice for sin and as a way of purifying the altar. In addition, you must smear the altar with olive oil to make it completely holy. 37 Do this for seven days, and the altar will become so holy that anyone who touches it will become holy.

Daily Sacrifices

The Lord said:

38 Each day you must sacrifice two lambs a year old, 39 one in the morning and one in the evening. 40-41 With each lamb offer two pounds of your finest flour mixed with a quart of pure olive oil, and also pour out a quart of wine as an offering. The smell of this sacrifice on the fires of the altar will be pleasing to me. 42-43 You and your descendants must always offer this sacrifice on the altar at the entrance to the sacred tent.

People of Israel, I will meet and speak with you there, and my shining glory will make the place holy. 44 Because of who I am, the tent will become sacred, and Aaron and his sons will become worthy to serve as my priests. 45 I will live among you as your God, 46 and you will know that I am the Lord your God, the one who rescued you from Egypt, so that I could live among you.

The Altar for Burning Incense

The Lord said to Moses:

30 Build an altar of acacia wood where you can burn incense. Make it eighteen inches square and thirty-six inches high, and make each of its four corners stick up like the horn of a bull. Cover it with pure gold and put a gold edging around it. Then below the edging on opposite sides attach two gold rings through which you can put the poles for carrying the altar. These poles are also to be made of acacia wood covered with gold.

Put the altar in front of the inside curtain of the sacred tent. The chest with the place of mercy[h] is kept behind that curtain, and I will talk with you there. 7-8 From now on, when Aaron tends the lamp each morning and evening, he must burn sweet-smelling incense to me on the altar. Burn only the proper incense on the altar and never use it for grain sacrifices or animal sacrifices or drink offerings. 10 Once a year Aaron must purify the altar by smearing on its four corners[i] the blood of an animal sacrificed for sin, and this practice must always be followed. The altar is sacred because it is dedicated to me.

Matthew 26:14-46

Judas and the Chief Priests

14 Judas Iscariot[a] was one of the twelve disciples. He went to the chief priests 15 and asked, “How much will you give me if I help you arrest Jesus?” They paid Judas thirty silver coins, 16 and from then on he started looking for a good chance to betray Jesus.

Jesus Eats the Passover Meal with His Disciples

17 On the first day of the Festival of Thin Bread, Jesus' disciples came to him and asked, “Where do you want us to prepare the Passover meal?”

18 Jesus told them to go to a certain man in the city and tell him, “Our teacher says, ‘My time has come! I want to eat the Passover meal with my disciples in your home.’ “ 19 They did as Jesus told them and prepared the meal.

20-21 When Jesus was eating with his twelve disciples that evening, he said, “One of you will surely hand me over to my enemies.”

22 The disciples were very sad, and each one said to Jesus, “Lord, you can’t mean me!”

23 He answered, “One of you men who has eaten with me from this dish will betray me. 24 The Son of Man will die, as the Scriptures say. But it’s going to be terrible for the one who betrays me! That man would be better off if he had never been born.”

25 Judas said, “Teacher, you surely don’t mean me!”

“That’s what you say!” Jesus replied. But later, Judas did betray him.

The Lord’s Supper

26 During the meal Jesus took some bread in his hands. He blessed the bread and broke it. Then he gave it to his disciples and said, “Take this and eat it. This is my body.”

27 Jesus picked up a cup of wine and gave thanks to God. He then gave it to his disciples and said, “Take this and drink it. 28 This is my blood, and with it God makes his agreement with you. It will be poured out, so that many people will have their sins forgiven. 29 From now on I am not going to drink any wine, until I drink new wine with you in my Father’s kingdom.” 30 Then they sang a hymn and went out to the Mount of Olives.

Peter’s Promise

31 Jesus said to his disciples, “During this very night, all of you will reject me, as the Scriptures say,

‘I will strike down
the shepherd,
and the sheep
will be scattered.’

32 But after I am raised to life, I will go to Galilee ahead of you.”

33 Peter spoke up, “Even if all the others reject you, I never will!”

34 Jesus replied, “I promise you that before a rooster crows tonight, you will say three times that you don’t know me.” 35 But Peter said, “Even if I have to die with you, I will never say I don’t know you.”

All the others said the same thing.

Jesus Prays

36 Jesus went with his disciples to a place called Gethsemane. When they got there, he told them, “Sit here while I go over there and pray.”

37 Jesus took along Peter and the two brothers, James and John.[b] He was very sad and troubled, 38 and he said to them, “I am so sad that I feel as if I am dying. Stay here and keep awake with me.”

39 Jesus walked on a little way. Then he knelt with his face to the ground and prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, don’t make me suffer by having me drink from this cup.[c] But do what you want, and not what I want.”

40 He came back and found his disciples sleeping. So he said to Peter, “Can’t any of you stay awake with me for just one hour? 41 Stay awake and pray that you won’t be tested. You want to do what is right, but you are weak.”

42 Again Jesus went to pray and said, “My Father, if there is no other way, and I must suffer, I will still do what you want.”

43 Jesus came back and found them sleeping again. They simply could not keep their eyes open. 44 He left them and prayed the same prayer once more.

45 Finally, Jesus returned to his disciples and said, “Are you still sleeping and resting?[d] The time has come for the Son of Man to be handed over to sinners. 46 Get up! Let’s go. The one who will betray me is already here.”

Footnotes:

  1. 26.14 Iscariot: See the note at 10.4.
  2. 26.37 the two brothers, James and John: The Greek text has “the two sons of Zebedee” (see 27.56).
  3. 26.39 having me drink from this cup: In the Scriptures “to drink from a cup” sometimes means to suffer (see the note at 20.22).
  4. 26.45 Are you still sleeping and resting: Or “You may as well keep on sleeping and resting.”

Psalm 31:19-24

19 You are wonderful,
and while everyone watches,
you store up blessings for all
who honor and trust you.
20 You are their shelter
from harmful plots,
and you are their protection
from vicious gossip.

21 I will praise you, Lord,
for showing great kindness
when I was like a city
under attack.
22 I was terrified and thought,
“They’ve chased me
far away from you!”
But you answered my prayer
when I shouted for help.

23 All who belong to the Lord,
show how you love him.
The Lord protects the faithful,
but he severely punishes
everyone who is proud.
24 All who trust the Lord,
be cheerful and strong.

Proverbs 8:14-26

14 I am strong,
and I offer
sensible advice
and sound judgment.
15 By my power kings govern,
and rulers make laws
that are fair.
16 Every honest leader rules
with help from me.

17 I love everyone who loves me,
and I will be found by all
who honestly search.
18 I can make you rich and famous,
important and successful.
19 What you receive from me
is more valuable
than even the finest gold
or the purest silver.
20 I always do what is right,
21 and I give great riches
to everyone who loves me.

22 From the beginning,
I was with the Lord.[a]
I was there before he began
23 to create the earth.
At the very first,
the Lord gave life to[b] me.
24 When I was born,
there were no oceans
or springs of water.
25 My birth was before
mountains were formed
or hills were put in place.
26 It happened long before God
had made the earth
or any of its fields
or even the dust.

Exodus 28:1-43, Matthew 25:31-26:13, Psalms 31:9-18, Proverbs 8:12-13

Today is the 8th day of February welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I’m Brian it is wonderful to be here with you today around the Global Campfire. And we’ll collectively take the next step forward together in the Scriptures which brings us back into the book of Exodus in the Old Testament. And just by way of reminder we’re at Mount Sinai with the children of Israel. Moses on the summit and God is speaking giving him the laws that will shape and govern the people. Today, Exodus chapter 28.

Commentary:

Okay. So, Jesus has been talking about the end or the time of the end and He’s continuing that discussion. For example, yesterday there were a couple of stories, right, that showed us vigilance, preparedness, awareness, awake-ness. Today. He reveals something really important for us to understand about the kingdom of God and that basically is climbing the ladder towards some sort of notoriety or like even in ministry to become like a celebrity in some sort of way, like that’s not that impressive to God. This is God most high. But when we’re awake and aware and vigilant and understand that those…there are those who are less fortunate than us we’re to…we’re to try to help in whatever way we can, because in helping in this way we are doing it for God. This is tangible, concrete work for the Lord, and it’s done to the Lord. He receives it as if it was done to Himself or quoting Jesus, “whenever you did it for any of My people no matter how unimportant they seemed you did it for Me”, which helps us understand this idea that we are the hands and feet of Jesus in this world is more than a metaphor. And we could read this and go well, “how do I…how I quit my job, get my…like how do we dedicate our lives to this then? I want to do these things for the Lord.” And some people are definitely called in that direction, to use all of their lives seeking justice or provision for those who have none, which is beautiful. But what we’re being told here is not unlike what we were being told yesterday about vigilance and preparedness and awareness. If we are living our lives aware of more than what is going on in our lives only, like if we’re not self-absorbed in self-focused and sort of isolated, but rather aware, realizing that we are to live our lives as a living sacrifice to God then we realize that our lives posture is one of availability to help when we can where we can however we can. And what does that look like? “When I was hungry, you gave me something to eat. And I was thirsty, you gave me something to drink. When I was a stranger, you welcomed me. When I was naked, you gave me close to wear. When I was sick, you took care of me. When I was in jail, you visited me.” It’s a posture of doing what we can when we encounter opportunity. And sure, we can boil this down and go, “well…that’s sort of the golden rule and everybody knows that.” But if we look at the world and the cultures that we live in we realize that we know this, and we know goodwill toward one another is a good positive thing and loving one another is a healthy good thing but we’re also programmed to think that it’s about us. And the more visible we are, the more powerful we are, the more rich we are, whatever this is what success looks like. This is what it looks like to make it in this world. What Jesus seems to be indicating here is that to make it in God’s kingdom is different. So, climbing the ladder of notoriety or whatever in this world is actually climbing in the wrong direction in God’s kingdom because in God’s kingdom there is no lack. It is much more of a “we”, a “we” are in this together than in an “I”, I what “I” am going to achieve and accomplish. And again, these are not like foreign concepts to the Christian faith. They’re foundational. So, the question then becomes, which kingdom are we operating in? What direction are we going in?

Prayer:

Father, once again, we invite You, we invite Your Holy Spirit in…into this question. Where are we going? Are we aware? Are we paying attention? What kingdom are we serving here? Where is our allegiance? And what needs to change? And what does this need to look like in our story? Because it can be different for each one of us and is different for each one of us? And, so, Holy Spirit come into this story that we are telling and help us to become intimately aware with the fact that when we do it for the least of these, we do it for You. And we pray this in the mighty name of Jesus who modeled this for us. Amen.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Good morning Daily Audio Bible family this is Peggy in California. I have tried to make this recording at least a dozen times and can’t get through it. So, I’m going to try again. Before I do let me just tell you how much I love you all and appreciate this family. I’m calling today to ask for prayer for my son Mason who’s been struggling for a couple of years. We are coming to find out he’s been dealing with some pretty heavy stuff. And I know he needs Jesus in his heart. He needs peace. So, I would pray for that and ask you too as well and I ask you to pray for his twin brother who this also affects. He…he tells us he feels what his brother feels. So, even though the struggle is not the same for him or he’s not dealing with it he feels it. So, he is dealing with it, I guess. Anyway, I would just really covet your prayers. And I just want to give a shout out to Annette from Oklahoma City. I just heard her on the February 4th podcast, and she really brightened my day. Can’t tell by the way I’m so emotional right now but she did. So, thank you. God bless you all.

Hello DAB family this is Thankful and Still and I was just calling in response to a lady on the January 29th community prayer and encouragement. I didn’t catch your name, but you were sharing that you are a year sober and recovering heroin addict and I’m just…I was so touched by your testimony. It gave me such hope for my loved ones for…for recovery and that God, when we lean on Him is going to take us through step by step. So, Lord I lift up this…this young lady who shared her testimony and I pray God that You would encourage her along Your path of just total surrender to You and…and dependence upon You God for…for every breath, for every thought, for every decision and for a godly lifestyle. It’s just so exciting and I…and I praise You God. I thank You for the work that You’re doing in her life, and I pray that You would surround her with others that that encourage her and live a life that is glorifying to You Lord. I thank You for her testimony and bless her in Jesus’ name. And Keira, I’m praying…I’m praying for your son Nish. I’m praying for this transition, you know, and…and for his decisions in this. Thank you for having faith too…and sharing, you know, and just know that I’m praying for you both. Again, just an amazing testimony of God's…of God’s hand in your life. So, thank you so much. God bless you.

Hello Daily Audio Bible people this is Nadine from Egypt. I sent before to lift my friends name in prayers and someone did and God listened and he was much much better. The cancer was healing, and everything was fine and then suddenly as if the devil is fighting over his spirit he collapsed. His lungs is not working. He is on a ventilator. I want to pray for God’s will to be done. Although deep inside I want him to be good and I want what I want for him but I’m so limited and I want you to help me and aid me in prayers, that my faith in Sammy’s life it’s a week but I know Sammy if he gets better, it’ll be a great testimony for Jesus. He’s a great man with a great character that affects everyone around him. I want you to help me and aid me in prayers for Sammy that even if he’s on sedation and he can’t feel anything that God will go and visit him, and the Holy Spirit will lift his soul and put him in a better place and let God’s will be done. But I really want him to be better. I’m so confused on this point. I want him to be better. I want what I want for him and his family but yet I want God’s will to be done. I want God to have mercy on him and mercy on his family. Please help me in prayers for Sammy from Egypt.

Bless __ DAB family this is Marcy from New Jersey. I just want to share this testimony with you. I know I’ve shared it in the past, but it just feel led in the Spirit to encourage someone that’s going through something today. 10 years ago, the doctor diagnosed me with lupus. While I was in hospital I was listening to Brian. I…I was listening to him before I got this diagnosis, so I continued to listen to him. And God healed me through that word. God healed me. God heals. The word of God is powerful. The word of God works if we work it. The only thing that gives God access to our situation, the only thing that allows the door to be opened where God can come in and reach us is our faith. We must grow in faith family. We need to move from a place of passivity where we’re just listening to Brian Reba scriptures. We need to put this scripture into practice. The Bible said let us not be hearers of the word only but doers. We must do the word. We must do the work that is required. God heals. God is still healing. He hasn’t rested from healing. I have never returned to that place of sickness. God has made me whole. He has restored me completely. I was on dialysis. I was recommended to have a kidney transplant. God showed up and healed me. I want to release this to somebody that may be going through the same diagnosis with lupus that you’re healed. Exercise your faith and receive your healing. Dave in the UK, I am praying for you. Remain in faith. Look to God not your situation. Remember to turn God for every little thing and God is gonna bless you. I’m praying for you…

Oh, heavenly Father please be with me, and I ask everyone to pray for me for my children and me. I’m all alone in this country and I have no one. I’ve gone through domestic abuse, and the scars are really deep. I’m still scared of my ex-partner. He still has control over me financially and has not given any help. I pray to the Almighty and to my heavenly father to please help in sorting out a few things which we are in the process of. Please pray for me. Please send your guardian angels so that they influence the spirit of my ex-partner so God can understand my situation and what is required. I ask everybody to please give your blessings and prayers so that what I desire for my children’s best interest may be __. In the name of Jesus, I ask. Thank you.

Exodus 28

The Clothes for the High Priest

The Lord said to Moses:

28 Send for your brother Aaron and his sons Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar. They are the ones I have chosen from Israel to serve as my priests. Make Aaron some beautiful clothes that are worthy of a high priest. Aaron is to be dedicated as my high priest, and his clothes must be made only by persons who possess skills that I have given them. Here are the items that need to be made: a breastpiece, a priestly vest, a robe, an embroidered shirt, a turban, and a sash. These sacred clothes are to be made for your brother Aaron and his sons who will be my priests. Only gold and fine linen, woven with blue, purple, and red wool, are to be used for making these clothes.

The Vest for the High Priest

The Lord said:

6-8 The entire priestly vest must be made of fine linen skillfully woven with blue, purple, and red wool, and decorated with gold. It is to have two shoulder straps to support it and a sash that fastens around the waist.

9-12 Put two onyx[a] stones in gold settings, then attach one to each of the shoulder straps. On one of these stones engrave the names of Israel’s first six sons in the order of their birth. And do the same with his remaining six sons on the other stone. In this way Aaron will always carry the names of the tribes of Israel when he enters the holy place, and I will never forget my people.

13-14 Attach two gold settings to the shoulder straps and fasten them with two braided chains of pure gold.

The Breastpiece for the High Priest

The Lord said:

15 From the same costly material make a breastpiece for the high priest to use in learning what I want my people to do. 16 It is to be nine inches square and folded double 17 with four rows of three precious stones: In the first row put a carnelian, a chrysolite, and an emerald; 18 in the second row a turquoise, a sapphire, and a diamond; 19 in the third row a jacinth, an agate, and an amethyst; 20 and in the fourth row a beryl, an onyx, and a jasper.[b] Mount the stones in delicate gold settings 21 and engrave on each of them the name of one of the twelve tribes of Israel.

22-25 Attach two gold rings to the upper front corners of the breastpiece and fasten them with two braided gold chains to gold settings on the shoulder straps. 26 Attach two other gold rings to the lower inside corners next to the vest 27 and two more near the bottom of the shoulder straps right above the sash. 28 Then take a blue cord and tie the two lower rings on the breastpiece to those on the vest. This will keep the breastpiece in place.

29 In this way Aaron will have the names of the twelve tribes of Israel written on his heart each time he enters the holy place, and I will never forget my people. 30 He must also wear on his breastpiece the two small objects[c] that he uses to receive answers from me.

The Other High-Priestly Clothes

The Lord said:

31 Under his vest Aaron must wear a robe of blue wool 32 with an opening in the center for his head. Be sure to bind the material around the collar to keep it from raveling. 33-34 Along the hem of the robe weave pomegranates[d] of blue, purple, and red wool with a gold bell between each of them. 35 If Aaron wears these clothes when he enters the holy place as my high priest, the sound of the bells will be heard, and his life will not be in danger.

36 On a narrow strip of pure gold engrave the words: “Dedicated to the Lord.” 37 Fasten it to the front of Aaron’s turban with a blue cord, 38 so he can wear it on his forehead. This will show that he will take on himself the guilt for any sins the people of Israel commit in offering their gifts to me, and I will forgive them.

39 Make Aaron’s robe and turban of fine linen and decorate his sash with fancy needlework.

The Clothes for the Other Priests

40 Since Aaron’s sons are priests, they should also look dignified. So make robes, sashes, and special caps for them. 41 Then dress Aaron and his sons in these clothes, pour olive oil on their heads, and ordain them as my priests.

42 Make linen shorts for them that reach from the waist down to the thigh, so they won’t expose themselves. 43 Whenever they enter the sacred tent or serve at the altar or enter the holy place, they must wear these shorts, or else they will be guilty and die. This same rule applies to any of their descendants who serve as priests.

Matthew 25:31-26:13

The Final Judgment

31 When the Son of Man comes in his glory with all of his angels, he will sit on his royal throne. 32 The people of all nations will be brought before him, and he will separate them, as shepherds separate their sheep from their goats.

33 He will place the sheep on his right and the goats on his left. 34 Then the king will say to those on his right, “My father has blessed you! Come and receive the kingdom that was prepared for you before the world was created. 35 When I was hungry, you gave me something to eat, and when I was thirsty, you gave me something to drink. When I was a stranger, you welcomed me, 36 and when I was naked, you gave me clothes to wear. When I was sick, you took care of me, and when I was in jail, you visited me.”

37 Then the ones who pleased the Lord will ask, “When did we give you something to eat or drink? 38 When did we welcome you as a stranger or give you clothes to wear 39 or visit you while you were sick or in jail?”

40 The king will answer, “Whenever you did it for any of my people, no matter how unimportant they seemed, you did it for me.”

41 Then the king will say to those on his left, “Get away from me! You are under God’s curse. Go into the everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels! 42 I was hungry, but you did not give me anything to eat, and I was thirsty, but you did not give me anything to drink. 43 I was a stranger, but you did not welcome me, and I was naked, but you did not give me any clothes to wear. I was sick and in jail, but you did not take care of me.”

44 Then the people will ask, “Lord, when did we fail to help you when you were hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in jail?”

45 The king will say to them, “Whenever you failed to help any of my people, no matter how unimportant they seemed, you failed to do it for me.”

46 Then Jesus said, “Those people will be punished forever. But the ones who pleased God will have eternal life.”

The Plot To Kill Jesus

26 When Jesus had finished teaching, he told his disciples, “You know that two days from now will be Passover. That is when the Son of Man will be handed over to his enemies and nailed to a cross.”

At that time the chief priests and the nation’s leaders were meeting at the home of Caiaphas the high priest. They planned how they could sneak around and have Jesus arrested and put to death. But they said, “We must not do it during Passover, because the people will riot.”

At Bethany

Jesus was in the town of Bethany, eating at the home of Simon, who had leprosy.[a] A woman came in with a bottle of expensive perfume and poured it on Jesus' head. But when his disciples saw this, they became angry and complained, “Why such a waste? We could have sold this perfume for a lot of money and given it to the poor.”

10 Jesus knew what they were thinking, and he said:

Why are you bothering this woman? She has done a beautiful thing for me. 11 You will always have the poor with you, but you won’t always have me. 12 She has poured perfume on my body to prepare it for burial.[b] 13 You may be sure that wherever the good news is told all over the world, people will remember what she has done. And they will tell others.

  2. 26.12 poured perfume on my body to prepare it for burial: The Jewish people taught that giving someone a proper burial was even more important than helping the poor.

Psalm 31:9-18

Have pity, Lord!
I am hurting and almost blind.
My whole body aches.
10 I have known only sorrow
all my life long,
and I suffer
year after year.
I am weak from sin,
and my bones are limp.

11 My enemies insult me.
Neighbors are even worse,
and I disgust my friends.
People meet me on the street,
and they turn and run.
12 I am completely forgotten
like someone dead.
I am merely a broken dish.
13 I hear the crowds whisper,
“Everyone is afraid!”
They are plotting and scheming
to murder me.

14 But I trust you, Lord,
and I claim you as my God.
15 My life is in your hands.
Save me from enemies
who hunt me down.
16 Smile on me, your servant.
Have pity and rescue me.

17 I pray only to you.
Don’t disappoint me.
Disappoint my cruel enemies
until they lie silent
in their graves.
18 Silence those proud liars!
Make them stop bragging
and insulting your people.

I hate pride and conceit

Exodus 26:1-27:21, Matthew 25:1-30, Psalm 31:1-8, Proverbs 8:1-11

Today is the seventh day of February, welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I am Brian and it’s great to be here with you today, as we do what we do in take the next step forward together in life and in the Scriptures and that will lead us back out into the book of Exodus. And so, we are with the children of Israel who have left slavery and are now encamped around the mountain called Mount Sinai. Moses is up on the mountain God, is beginning to reveal to Moses what the law will be what will shape and govern this brand-new culture being formed in the wilderness so the children of Israel are below the base of the mountain was this is at the top, God is speaking to Moses and we are listening, Exodus chapters 26 and 27 today.

Commentary:

Okay, a couple of things for us to consider today, first in the book of Matthew, Jesus is telling stories about the kingdom of heaven, but prior to Him giving these illustrations He had been talking about the like the end like, the end of all things and He described that and He ended up saying when you see things around you that look like the end understand that that’s the beginning of the end, it’s birthing pains. The idea that all things will be made new is like a birth. So, anyone who has had a child or attended, been there for a birth you know that things get, they get pretty amped up right there before the new life comes and there’s travail and pain and pushing and all of this and then new life comes and everything that it took to bring that new life into the world then begins to recede, new life has come. Jesus instructs, this is a way to look at the future, this is a way to look at what’s happening and then He gives some examples that reveal the posture that we should have in the process and so, He gives the example of a master who left and entrusted some of his resources to three of his servants in different increments. And we saw the first person, when he gives an account to the master had taken the resource and doubled the resource and gave it back to the master. The second person had less but he did the same thing, he doubled what the master had gave him and returned it to the master whereas, the third person hid what he was given, he hid it in the ground, he was afraid and the master was displeased. The second story Jesus told was about the girls waiting for the groom to come for the wedding and some of them had enough oil in their lamps and some of them didn’t and so, when the groom came, he came late and those that didn’t have enough oil they had to go in search of oil but by the time they got back the doors had been shut. So, if we look at these stories, what do we see as characteristics, we see vigilance, we see commitment, we see a preparedness, awareness, readiness, which brings home Jesus point, you don’t know when these things are going to happen, be ready all the time, be diligent all of the time, don’t hide what you’ve been given waiting for more so that you can do the thing that you think you’re supposed to do, use what you have, be diligent and vigilant now, this is the posture of a person who is awake and aware of what’s happening, a person who’s paying attention and this really is the posture of the faith journey. We have every conceivable distraction to keep us from paying attention to the fact that we are being transformed. When we are paying attention, when we are vigilant, when we are diligent, when we are awake and aware, our lives have a completely different trajectory than when we are distracted and unaware and it’s even worse when we are distracted and unaware and pretend that we’re being diligent and vigilant and have all kinds of things to say as an expert but this is the famous passage where Jesus describes the father saying, well done, thou good and faithful servant and the person who got to hear those words was the person who did not hide the treasure they were given. Which once again, gives us clarity that we need wisdom, we need to be seeking wisdom and awareness more than any other ambition that we have which brings us to the voice of wisdom today and she describes herself standing at every crossroads. In fact, let me just reread from the Bible “with great understanding wisdom is calling out as she stands at the crossroads and on every hill.” Unpacking that means that as we navigate the crossroads of our lives and the decisions because that really is the crossroad right, the choices that were going to make, wisdom is there in the moment are we aware, are we vigilant, are we diligent, are we awake, are we paying attention? She’s at every crossroads and on every hill, I continue “she stands by the city gate, where everyone enters the city and she shouts, I am calling out to each one of you, good sense and sound judgment can be yours, listen because what I say is worthwhile and right, I always speak the truth and refuse to tell a lie, every word I speak is honest, not one is misleading or deceptive. If you have understanding, you will see that my words are just what you need. Let instruction and knowledge mean more to you than silver or the finest gold. Wisdom is worth much more than precious jewels or anything else you desire.”

Prayer:

And so, Father as we consider, diligence, and vigilance and awareness and preparedness we confess that we’ve been all over the map. We have been pulled in every imaginable direction and offered every conceivable distraction, help us, help us, come Holy Spirit, help us to slow down at these crossroads and seek wisdom above all things as we navigate this beautiful gift of life that You have bestowed upon us. Come, Holy Spirit wake us up we pray, in the name of Jesus, we ask. Amen.

Exodus 26-27

Curtains and Coverings for the Sacred Tent

The Lord said to Moses:

26 Furnish the sacred tent with curtains made from ten pieces of the finest linen. They must be woven with blue, purple, and red wool and embroidered with figures of winged creatures. Make each piece fourteen yards long and two yards wide and sew them together into two curtains with five sections each. 4-6 Put fifty loops of blue cloth along one of the wider sides of each curtain, then fasten the two curtains at the loops with fifty gold hooks.

7-8 As the material for the tent, use goat hair to weave eleven sections fifteen yards by two yards each. Sew five of the sections together to make one panel. Then sew the other six together to make a second panel, and fold the sixth section double over the front of the tent. 10 Put fifty loops along one of the wider sides of each panel 11 and fasten the two panels at the loops with fifty bronze hooks. 12-13 The panel of goat hair will be a yard longer than the tent itself, so fold half a yard of the material behind the tent and on each side as a protective covering. 14 Make two more coverings—one with ram skins dyed red and the other with fine leather.

The Framework for the Sacred Tent

The Lord said:

15 Build a framework of acacia wood for the walls of the sacred tent. 16 Each frame is to be fifteen feet high and twenty-seven inches wide 17 with two wooden pegs near the bottom. 18-21 Place two silver stands under each frame with sockets for the pegs, so the frames can be joined together. Twenty of these frames are to be used along the south side and twenty more along the north. 22 For the back wall along the west side use six frames 23-24 with two more at the southwest and northwest corners. Make certain that these corner frames are joined from top to bottom. 25 Altogether, this back wall will have eight frames with two silver stands under each one.

26-27 Make five crossbars for each of the wooden frames, 28 with the center crossbar running the full length of the wall. 29 Cover the frames and the crossbars with gold and attach gold rings to the frames to run the crossbars through. 30 Then set up the tent in the way I showed you on the mountain.

The Curtain inside the Sacred Tent

The Lord said:

31-33 Make a curtain to separate the holy place from the most holy place. Use fine linen woven with blue, purple, and red wool, and embroidered with figures of winged creatures. Cover four acacia wood posts with gold and set them each on a silver stand. Then fasten gold hooks to the posts and hang the curtain there.

34 Inside the most holy place, you must put the sacred chest that has the place of mercy on its lid.[a] 35 Outside the curtain put the table for the sacred bread on the right side and the gold lampstand on the left.

36 For the entrance to the tent, use a piece of fine linen woven with blue, purple, and red wool and embroidered with fancy needlework. 37 Cover five acacia wood posts with gold and set them each on a bronze stand. Then put gold hooks on the posts and hang the curtain there.

The Altar for Offering Sacrifices

The Lord said to Moses:

27 Use acacia wood to build an altar seven and a half feet square and four and a half feet high, and make each of the four top corners stick up like the horn of a bull. Then cover the whole altar with bronze, including the four horns. All the equipment for the altar must also be made of bronze—the pans for the hot ashes, the shovels, the sprinkling bowls, the meat forks, and the fire pans. 4-5 Midway up the altar build a ledge around it, and cover the bottom half of the altar with a decorative bronze grating. Then attach a bronze ring beneath the ledge at the four corners of the altar. 6-7 Cover two acacia wood poles with bronze and put them through the rings for carrying the altar. Construct the altar in the shape of an open box, just as you were shown on the mountain.

The Courtyard around the Sacred Tent

The Lord said:

9-15 Surround the sacred tent with a courtyard one hundred fifty feet long on the south and north and seventy-five feet wide on the east and west. Use twenty bronze posts on bronze stands for the south and north and ten for the west. Then hang a curtain of fine linen on the posts along each of these three sides by using silver hooks and rods.

Place three bronze posts on each side of the entrance at the east and hang a curtain seven and a half yards wide on each set of posts. 16 Use four more of these posts for the entrance way, then hang on them an embroidered curtain of fine linen ten yards long and woven with blue, purple, and red wool.

17-18 The curtains that surround the courtyard must be two and a half yards high and are to be hung from the bronze posts with silver hooks and rods. 19 The rest of the equipment for the sacred tent must be made of bronze, including the pegs for the tent and for the curtain surrounding the courtyard.

The Oil for the Lamp in the Holy Place

The Lord said to Moses:

20 Command the people of Israel to supply you with the purest olive oil. Do this so the lamp will keep burning 21 in front of the curtain that separates the holy place from the most holy place, where the sacred chest is kept. Aaron and his sons are responsible for keeping the lamp burning every night in the sacred tent. The Israelites must always obey this command.

Matthew 25:1-30

A Story about Ten Girls

25 The kingdom of heaven is like what happened one night when ten girls took their oil lamps and went to a wedding to meet the groom.[a] Five of the girls were foolish and five were wise. The foolish ones took their lamps, but no extra oil. The ones who were wise took along extra oil for their lamps.

The groom was late arriving, and the girls became drowsy and fell asleep. Then in the middle of the night someone shouted, “Here’s the groom! Come to meet him!”

When the girls got up and started getting their lamps ready, the foolish ones said to the others, “Let us have some of your oil! Our lamps are going out.”

The girls who were wise answered, “There’s not enough oil for all of us! Go and buy some for yourselves.”

10 While the foolish girls were on their way to get some oil, the groom arrived. The girls who were ready went into the wedding, and the doors were closed. 11 Later the other girls returned and shouted, “Sir, sir! Open the door for us!”

12 But the groom replied, “I don’t even know you!”

13 So, my disciples, always be ready! You don’t know the day or the time when all this will happen.

A Story about Three Servants

14 The kingdom is also like what happened when a man went away and put his three servants in charge of all he owned. 15 The man knew what each servant could do. So he handed five thousand coins to the first servant, two thousand to the second, and one thousand to the third. Then he left the country.

16 As soon as the man had gone, the servant with the five thousand coins used them to earn five thousand more. 17 The servant who had two thousand coins did the same with his money and earned two thousand more. 18 But the servant with one thousand coins dug a hole and hid his master’s money in the ground.

19 Some time later the master of those servants returned. He called them in and asked what they had done with his money. 20 The servant who had been given five thousand coins brought them in with the five thousand that he had earned. He said, “Sir, you gave me five thousand coins, and I have earned five thousand more.”

21 “Wonderful!” his master replied. “You are a good and faithful servant. I left you in charge of only a little, but now I will put you in charge of much more. Come and share in my happiness!”

22 Next, the servant who had been given two thousand coins came in and said, “Sir, you gave me two thousand coins, and I have earned two thousand more.”

23 “Wonderful!” his master replied. “You are a good and faithful servant. I left you in charge of only a little, but now I will put you in charge of much more. Come and share in my happiness!”

24 The servant who had been given one thousand coins then came in and said, “Sir, I know that you are hard to get along with. You harvest what you don’t plant and gather crops where you haven’t scattered seed. 25 I was frightened and went out and hid your money in the ground. Here is every single coin!”

26 The master of the servant told him, “You are lazy and good-for-nothing! You know that I harvest what I don’t plant and gather crops where I haven’t scattered seed. 27 You could have at least put my money in the bank, so that I could have earned interest on it.”

28 Then the master said, “Now your money will be taken away and given to the servant with ten thousand coins! 29 Everyone who has something will be given more, and they will have more than enough. But everything will be taken from those who don’t have anything. 30 You are a worthless servant, and you will be thrown out into the dark where people will cry and grit their teeth in pain.”

Footnotes:

  1. 25.1 to meet the groom: Some manuscripts add “and the bride.” It was the custom for the groom to go to the home of the bride’s parents to get his bride. Young girls and other guests would then go with them to the home of the groom’s parents, where the wedding feast would take place.

Psalm 31:1-8

(A psalm by David for the music leader.)

A Prayer for Protection

31 I come to you, Lord,
for protection.
Don’t let me be ashamed.
Do as you have promised
and rescue me.
Listen to my prayer
and hurry to save me.
Be my mighty rock[a]
and the fortress
where I am safe.

You, Lord God,
are my mighty rock
and my fortress.
Lead me and guide me,
so that your name
will be honored.
Protect me from hidden traps
and keep me safe.
You are faithful,
and I trust you
because you rescued me.

I hate the worshipers
of worthless idols,
but I trust you, Lord.
I celebrate and shout
because you are kind.
You saw all my suffering,
and you cared for me.
You kept me from the hands
of my enemies,
and you set me free.

Proverbs 8:1-11

In Praise of Wisdom

With great understanding,
Wisdom[a] is calling out
as she stands at the crossroads
and on every hill.
She stands by the city gate
where everyone enters the city,
and she shouts:
“I am calling out
to each one of you!
Good sense and sound judgment
can be yours.
Listen, because what I say
is worthwhile and right.
I always speak the truth
and refuse to tell a lie.
Every word I speak is honest,
not one is misleading
or deceptive.

“If you have understanding,
you will see that my words
are just what you need.
10 Let instruction and knowledge
mean more to you
than silver
or the finest gold.
11 Wisdom is worth much more
than precious jewels
or anything else you desire.”

Exodus 23:14-25:40, Matthew 24:29-51, Psalms 30:1-12, Proverbs 7:24-27

Today is the 6th day of February, welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I am Brian it’s great to be here with you today as we reach out our hand and twist the knob and throw open the threshold and walk into a brand-new shiny sparkly week. And most of the time when we throw the door open on a brand-new week, I say something similar because it’s a reminder. It’s in front of us. It’s the future. We are walking into it step-by-step day by day. And, so, what this week looks like, that story hasn’t been told. It’s for us to tell. And we will tell it with the actions of our lives, and we get to choose wisdom or foolishness. What would this week look like if we operated in wisdom every day in all of our interactions in all of our motivations. And let’s say like we did that last week and so now we’re going into this week, what if we continued that process? That would be us doing our part in collaborating in this great work of being transformed and sanctified. And, so, let’s choose wisely what we’re gonna do with this week. One of the things that we will do this week is that we will gather around the Global Campfire like this every day and take the next step forward. In the Old Testament, we are working our way through the book of Exodus. We have basically moved through the freedom, the freeing of the Egyptian slaves and they have left and gone into the wilderness. They are now at the mountain of God, or Mount Sinai, and God is beginning to give to Moses what will eventually become the law that establishes and governs this people who are former slaves who don’t know how to be anything but slaves. Now a culture is being developed in the desert. And, so, we have begun to see some of the statutes and rituals and customs and holidays and things that will shape this people. And, so, we’ll pick up where he left off yesterday. This week we will read from the Contemporary English Version. Exodus chapter 23 verse 14 through 25 verse 40.

Commentary:

Okay. So, in our reading from the book of Exodus today we have something that is very helpful, very informational and something that we need to consider when we are feeling impatient. So, the children of Israel…and we know who they are…these former slaves are at Mount Sinai where God is beginning to lay out what will organize and control this brand-new culture that is being established. We were already told from the Bible that when the slaves left Egypt, they didn’t go the shortest route into this land of promise and just move in. They hadn’t been battle tested and God carried them or lead them directly into the heart of the desert, a place where there’s like no way to survive, a place where they’re learning really important lessons about trust and dependence. There is some change, some fundamental change that has to happen inside of them so that their identity can shift away from slavery and away from Egypt and toward the future and freedom. This is the big shift. They don’t know how to be anything else. So, if we just pause right there and, you know, allow this to kinda become a mirror into our own lives we can think of the times when we felt like we’ve heard a promise or instructions about the way that we should go and we begin to move in these directions only to find out things are not easy, they’re very, very difficult, they’re very hard. Well, at that point, we often can throw our hands in the sky go like, “what the heck? I’m obeying. What is going on here? Why every time that I try to do the right thing and be obedient and be loyal and true, is it so hard?” And trust me I’m pointing this all out to us because I’m just as guilty. But can we just observe the fact that the wilderness was going to be hard no matter what and the wilderness is the pathway to the promised land in this story? And, so, when we move through the wilderness and things just get harder because we get obedient there may be some fundamental deep things that have to shift within us before we can move forward. And if there’s one thing that the Bible teaches us, and it teaches us a lot of things, but if there’s one core thing that we end up knowing very well from the Scriptures is that endurance is part of it. So, let’s kinda move back to Mount Sinai. These former slaves who are being remade into chosen people could very easily be thinking, “okay. We are clear of Egypt. God has done away with that problem. We are moving forward into this promise land if we could just find enough water and wonder why it’s taking so long.” In our reading today God says, “I will make the Hivites, Canaanites, and Hittites panic as you approach, but I won’t do all this in the first year because the land would become poor and wild animals would be everywhere. Instead, I will force out your enemies, little by little and give your nation time to grow strong enough to take over the land.” And, so, it can be incredibly helpful when we either feel like we’re in a wilderness season or we feel like we’re being obedient, but everything is completely difficult in every conceivable way. If we could just remember three words, “little by little.” That is how all growth happens, right? So, if you’re a parent and you’ve had a baby, you know, that…and maybe they’re grown or at least grown up from where they were, it happened little by little. Here we are in the second month of the year and so those of you are still holding true to all of the different New Year’s resolutions that you may have, maybe one of those resolutions is to drop a few pounds and to get strong. And if you’ve been going to the gym, well by now you…you are noticing the fruit of your efforts. But it was little by little. And if you achieve that goal, it still will be little by little, but you will get there if you do not faint, if you do not stop. And some of the core things that are being learned are discipline, self-discipline, control, the gaining of strength, moving into that strength, maybe a rewiring of why we go to certain things for comfort that aren’t going to ultimately be healthy for us. There’s all kinds of stuff that we’re learning all of the time, but when we have this instant gratification kind of concept, especially with God we’re missing the fact that even though we may know where we’re going, or we maybe even have a promise that we believe will be fulfilled we have to grow into that and be ready for that and it will happen little by little. And, so, as we’re facing some of those goals and objectives or challenges or hardships, remembering those words, little by little, that can be a rescue when we’re feeling pretty tapped out.

Prayer:

Father, thank You for this. Thank You for this story, for these examples, for how You’ve lead, Your people in days gone by. We see that You are comprehensive and so often we are simply focused on whatever the goal is when You are growing us up to be fully mature and strong, members who can carry Your authority in this world. Help us to remember that we pray. In the precious name of Jesus we ask. Amen.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Hello this is Landa from New York. I’m reaching out to the one woman in Canada. Today is February 2nd and she was…my heart just was so touched. She didn’t think anyone is really praying for her. And I want her to know just because you don’t hear your name or someone doesn't…you don’t hear it…like you think someone’s praying for you, believe me there are people out there that are praying for you. I pray for people all the time, lift them up and I don’t call in with that. And forgive me for that, but I wanted to let you know that you are so loved by Christ. And it’s like what we learned today, we’re in that wilderness and that’s when we grow, that is when we grow. And just lift your eyes up to Jesus, just lift them up and just have that faith knowing it’ll be OK, it’ll be alright. What does Jesus have for you? You sound like a wonderful person, and I want you to know that I love you and I’m praying for you. I just wish I could have remembered your name. I’m so sorry but you were from Canada. Thank you and I love you. Bye-bye.

Hi DAB this is Ken from New Hampshire. I’m calling for my bride Marylin. She’s going through a…a wilderness town right now. She’s…the devils beat her down and he's…he’s really pushing her face in the mud right now and I’ve done everything I know to do. I just know that she needs some people to come alongside her. She needs some prayer to help her lift her heart up to lift her eyes up, lift her gaze up Lord. So, I’m just going to pray right now and ask you to agree with me. Father in the name of Jesus I ask you to bless my bride, Marilyn. I ask you to lift her up from her wilderness experience right now, from…from where the enemy’s got her right now and I ask you for you to bless her, for you to give her a new perspective in her heart and in her mind God. And Lord, I thank you for this community that comes alongside and that helps each other. Thank you, Lord in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Hello this is Bobby from Spring Hill Tennessee. I wanted to lift up the lady in Canada who said she has the faith of a mustard seed. I want you to know that I’m praying for you and that things will work out, that you’re able to get your baby and that you’re able to…all your wants and needs will be met. I heard your prayer, so I know God has. So, I’m looking forward to hearing your praise reports in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Hi this is Marilyn from New Hampshire calling on Wednesday February 2nd and I just listened to Brian’s wilderness commentary and…which was amazing. And also, all the prayers today were about being in the wilderness, and I can really relate to that because I really feel like I’m there also. I’m in a really low spot. I’ve been a Christian for about 30 years, and I feel very dry. I want too…I’m stubborn, I feel like I’m resisting God. I know His word, but in my head…and I just really want to live a surrendered life. I think I can control it all and it doesn’t work that way. It's…just…I really need prayer. And I need prayer because I compare myself to everyone else and I like seem to never measure up because God doesn’t have enough for me. And when I compare myself to everyone else, I really lose Marylin. Like Marilyn’s not like even there ‘cause I’m looking at everyone else and their walk with God and my walk with God just seems pitiful. Anyway, I need prayer. Thank you for your prayers. I just need some faith, some…some…be closer to God. Anyway, I love you all. Thanks for your prayers. Bye-bye.

Jackie from Canada this is Soaring on Eagles Wings, your sister from Canada on February 2nd. I just heard you and your prayer request. You’re feeling so despondent. I…God isn’t answering your prayer, your business isn’t doing as you’d like it, you’ve been trying to get pregnant, and you haven’t. And it brought tears to my eyes when I listened to you because I sense your pain. Well, our Father says in Isaiah 65 verse 24, “before they call I will answer. While they’re still speaking I am here.” Abba Father, you’ve heard Jackie’s prayer request. You’ve seen her tears and you know and understand that pain in her heart. I pray that you would wrap your loving arms around her and draw her close to your bosom and so that she will remember that your word says you’re as near as the mention of your name, you will never leave her or forsake her. I pray that your Holy Spirit will warm her heart as He comforts her. Lord here her prayer request for having a child. I pray that you would grant her favor so that her womb will receive this gift from you, and she can rejoice and all her other prayers for her business and the loneliness she’s feeling oh God. Send her people around her who can…who will support her and stand with her and remind her of the goodness of God. You make all things beautiful in your time and I pray that you make all things beautiful in Jackie…in your time in Jackie’s life.

The Daily Audio Bible Reading for Sunday February 6, 2022 (NIV)

Exodus 23:14-25:40

Three Annual Festivals

The Lord said:

14 Celebrate three festivals each year in my honor.

15 Celebrate the Festival of Thin Bread by eating bread made without yeast, just as I have commanded.[a] Do this at the proper time during the month of Abib,[b] because it is the month when you left Egypt. And make certain that everyone brings the proper offerings.

16 Celebrate the Harvest Festival[c] each spring when you start harvesting your wheat, and celebrate the Festival of Shelters[d] each autumn when you pick your fruit.

17 Your men must come to these three festivals each year to worship me.

18 Do not offer bread made with yeast when you sacrifice an animal to me. And make sure that the fat of the animal is burned that same day.

19 Each year bring the best part of your first harvest to the place of worship.

Don’t boil a young goat in its mother’s milk.

A Promise and a Warning

The Lord said:

20 I am sending an angel to protect you and to lead you into the land I have ready for you. 21 Carefully obey everything the angel says, because I am giving him complete authority, and he won’t tolerate rebellion. 22 If you faithfully obey him, I will be a fierce enemy of your enemies. 23 My angel will lead you into the land of the Amorites, Hittites, Perizzites, Canaanites, Hivites, and Jebusites, and I will wipe them out. 24 Don’t worship their gods or follow their customs. Instead, destroy their idols and shatter their stone images.

25 Worship only me, the Lord your God! I will bless you with plenty of food and water and keep you strong. 26 Your women will give birth to healthy children, and everyone will live a long life.

27 I will terrify those nations and make your enemies so confused that they will run from you. 28 I will make the Hivites, Canaanites, and Hittites panic as you approach. 29 But I won’t do all this in the first year, because the land would become poor, and wild animals would be everywhere. 30 Instead, I will force out your enemies little by little and give your nation time to grow strong enough to take over the land.

31 I will see that your borders reach from the Red Sea[e] to the Euphrates River and from the Mediterranean Sea to the desert. I will let you defeat the people who live there, and you will force them out of the land. 32 But you must not make any agreements with them or with their gods. 33 Don’t let them stay in your land. They will trap you into sinning against me and worshiping their gods.

The People Agree To Obey God

24 The Lord said to Moses, “Come up to me on this mountain. Bring along Aaron, as well as his two sons Nadab and Abihu, and seventy of Israel’s leaders. They must worship me at a distance, but you are to come near. Don’t let anyone else come up.”

Moses gave the Lord’s instructions to the people, and they promised, “We will do everything the Lord has commanded!” Then Moses wrote down what the Lord had said.

The next morning Moses got up early. He built an altar at the foot of the mountain and set up a large stone for each of the twelve tribes of Israel. He also sent some young men to burn offerings and to sacrifice bulls as special offerings[f] to the Lord. Moses put half of the blood from the animals into bowls and sprinkled the rest on the altar. Then he read aloud the Lord’s commands and promises, and the people shouted, “We will obey the Lord and do everything he has commanded!”

Moses took the blood from the bowls and sprinkled it on the people. Next, he told them, “With this blood the Lord makes his agreement with you.”

Moses and Aaron, together with Nadab and Abihu and the seventy leaders, went up the mountain 10 and saw the God of Israel. Under his feet was something that looked like a pavement made out of sapphire,[g] and it was as bright as the sky.

11 Even though these leaders of Israel saw God, he did not punish them. So they ate and drank.

Moses on Mount Sinai

12 The Lord said to Moses, “Come up on the mountain and stay here for a while. I will give you the two flat stones on which I have written the laws that my people must obey.” 13 Moses and Joshua his assistant got ready, then Moses started up the mountain to meet with God.

14 Moses had told the leaders, “Wait here until we come back. Aaron and Hur will be with you, and they can settle any arguments while we are away.”

15 When Moses went up on Mount Sinai, a cloud covered it, 16 and the bright glory of the Lord came down and stayed there. The cloud covered the mountain for six days, and on the seventh day the Lord told Moses to come into the cloud. 17-18 Moses did so and stayed there forty days and nights. To the people, the Lord’s glory looked like a blazing fire on top of the mountain.

The Sacred Tent

25 The Lord said to Moses:

Tell everyone in Israel who wants to give gifts that they must bring them to you. Here is a list of what you are to collect: Gold, silver, and bronze; blue, purple, and red wool; fine linen; goat hair; tanned ram skins; fine leather; acacia wood; olive oil for the lamp; sweet-smelling spices to mix with the oil for dedicating the tent and ordaining the priests; and onyx[h] stones for the sacred vest and the breastpiece. I also want them to build a special place where I can live among my people. Make it and its furnishings exactly like the pattern I will show you.

The Sacred Chest

The Lord said to Moses:

10 Tell the people to build a chest of acacia wood forty-five inches long, twenty-seven inches wide, and twenty-seven inches high. 11 Cover it inside and out with pure gold and put a gold edging around the lid. 12 Make four gold rings and fasten one of them to each of the four legs of the chest. 13 Make two poles of acacia wood. Cover them with gold 14 and put them through the rings, so the chest can be carried by the poles. 15 Don’t ever remove the poles from the rings. 16 When I give you the Ten Commandments written on two flat stones, put them inside the chest.

17 Cover the lid of the chest with pure gold. 18-19 Then hammer out two winged creatures of pure gold and fasten them to the lid at the ends of the chest. 20 The creatures must face each other with their wings spread over the chest. 21 Inside it place the two flat stones with the Ten Commandments and put the gold lid on top of the chest. 22 I will meet you there[i] between the two creatures and tell you what my people must do and what they must not do.

The Table for the Sacred Bread

The Lord said:

23 Make a table of acacia wood thirty-six inches long, eighteen inches wide, and twenty-seven inches high. 24-25 Cover it with pure gold and put a gold edging around it with a border three inches wide.[j] 26 Make four gold rings and attach one to each of the legs 27-28 near the edging. The poles for carrying the table are to be placed through these rings and are to be made of acacia wood covered with gold. 29-30 The table is to be kept in the holy place, and the sacred loaves of bread must always be put on it. All bowls, plates, jars, and cups for wine offerings are to be made of pure gold and set on this table.

The Lampstand

The Lord said:

31 Make a lampstand of pure gold. The whole lampstand, including its decorative flowers, must be made from a single piece of hammered gold 32 with three branches on each of its two sides. 33 There are to be three decorative almond blossoms on each branch 34 and four on the stem. 35 There must also be a blossom where each pair of branches comes out from the stem. 36 The lampstand, including its branches and decorative flowers, must be made from a single piece of hammered pure gold. 37 The lamp on the top and those at the end of each of its six branches must be made so as to shine toward the front of the lampstand. 38 The tongs and trays for taking care of the lamps are to be made of pure gold. 39 The lampstand and its equipment will require seventy-five pounds of pure gold, 40 and they must be made according to the pattern I showed you on the mountain.

Matthew 24:29-51

When the Son of Man Appears

29 Right after those days of suffering,

“The sun will become dark,
and the moon
will no longer shine.
The stars will fall,
and the powers in the sky[a]
will be shaken.”

30 Then a sign will appear in the sky. And there will be the Son of Man.[b] All nations on earth will weep when they see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. 31 At the sound of a loud trumpet, he will send his angels to bring his chosen ones together from all over the earth.

A Lesson from a Fig Tree

32 Learn a lesson from a fig tree. When its branches sprout and start putting out leaves, you know that summer is near. 33 So when you see all these things happening, you will know that the time has almost come.[c] 34 I can promise you that some of the people of this generation will still be alive when all this happens. 35 The sky and the earth won’t last forever, but my words will.

No One Knows the Day or Time

36 No one knows the day or hour. The angels in heaven don’t know, and the Son himself doesn’t know.[d] Only the Father knows. 37 When the Son of Man appears, things will be just as they were when Noah lived. 38 People were eating, drinking, and getting married right up to the day that the flood came and Noah went into the big boat. 39 They didn’t know anything was happening until the flood came and swept them all away. That is how it will be when the Son of Man appears.

40 Two men will be in the same field, but only one will be taken. The other will be left. 41 Two women will be together grinding grain, but only one will be taken. The other will be left. 42 So be on your guard! You don’t know when your Lord will come. 43 Homeowners never know when a thief is coming, and they are always on guard to keep one from breaking in. 44 Always be ready! You don’t know when the Son of Man will come.

Faithful and Unfaithful Servants

45 Who are faithful and wise servants? Who are the ones the master will put in charge of giving the other servants their food supplies at the proper time? 46 Servants are fortunate if their master comes and finds them doing their job. 47 You may be sure that a servant who is always faithful will be put in charge of everything the master owns. 48 But suppose one of the servants thinks that the master won’t return until late. 49 Suppose that evil servant starts beating the other servants and eats and drinks with people who are drunk. 50 If that happens, the master will surely come on a day and at a time when the servant least expects him. 51 That servant will then be punished and thrown out with the ones who only pretended to serve their master. There they will cry and grit their teeth in pain.

Footnotes:

  1. 24.29 the powers in the sky: In ancient times people thought that the stars were spiritual powers.
  2. 24.30 And there will be the Son of Man: Or “And it will be the Son of Man.”
  3. 24.33 the time has almost come: Or “he (that is, the Son of Man) will soon be here.”
  4. 24.36 and the Son himself doesn’t know: These words are not in some manuscripts.

Psalm 30

(A psalm by David for the dedication of the temple.)

A Prayer of Thanks

30 I will praise you, Lord!
You saved me from the grave
and kept my enemies
from celebrating my death.
I prayed to you, Lord God,
and you healed me,
saving me from death
and the grave.

Your faithful people, Lord,
will praise you with songs
and honor your holy name.
Your anger lasts a little while,
but your kindness lasts
for a lifetime.
At night we may cry,
but when morning comes
we will celebrate.

I was carefree and thought,
“I’ll never be shaken!”
You, Lord, were my friend,
and you made me strong
as a mighty mountain.
But when you hid your face,
I was crushed.

I prayed to you, Lord,
and in my prayer I said,
“What good will it do you
if I am in the grave?
Once I have turned to dust,
how can I praise you
or tell how loyal you are?
10 Have pity, Lord! Help!”

11 You have turned my sorrow
into joyful dancing.
No longer am I sad
and wearing sackcloth.[a]
12 I thank you from my heart,
and I will never stop
singing your praises,
my Lord and my God.

Footnotes:

  1. 30.11 sackcloth: A rough, dark-colored cloth made from goat or camel hair and used to make grain sacks. It was worn in times of trouble or sorrow.

Proverbs 7:24-27

24 My son, pay close attention
to what I have said.
25 Don’t even think about
that kind of woman
or let yourself be misled
by someone like her.
26 Such a woman has caused
the downfall
and destruction
of a lot of men.
27 Her house is a one-way street
leading straight down
to the world of the dead.

Exodus 21:22-23:13, Matthew 24:1-28, Psalm 29:1-11, Proverbs 7:6-23

Today is the fifth day of February, welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I’m Brian, it is awesome to be here with you today as we continue our journey forward, bringing ourselves to the conclusion of the another one of the weeks that we get to spend together. We’re in the place now, when there’s way more weeks that we still get to spend together than there are weeks that we’ve moved through but the weird thing is we keep doing this. We’ll reach the midway point and they’ll be fewer days. But right now, we’re still getting ourselves going but we are definitely far enough into see that there is plenty for us in the Bible this year and so let’s dive in. We’ve been reading from the Common English Bible this week, Exodus chapter 21 verse 22 through 23 verse 13 today.

Prayer:

Father, we thank You for Your word and as we bring another week to a close, we take to heart what we just read in the book of Proverbs and certainly this is got a lot of detail about a foolish man being cunningly seduced into adultery. And so that’s stark enough for us to clearly understand. And if we take one step back from just that particular activity alone, we realize that anything that will seduce us into evil is wrong, anything that will seduce us or skewer our relationship or connection to You is wrong, it will only lead us down a path that leads to destruction, and the truth is, most of the time, we know better. We just put ourselves in a position we can’t get back out of or we’ve allowed something to go too far. We need to counsel of Your Holy Spirit to save us, to rescue us. It is our hearts desire to be true and to be true before You so that we might be unashamed before You, made righteous by You by the blood of Jesus that we might have this permission to be true and that we might then live true, instead of in the shadows. Come Holy Spirit, we pray in the name of Jesus, we ask. Amen.

Prayer and Encouragements:

This is Dr. John in Illinois, this message for Dave of the UK. Dave, I just want to tell you brother to hold fast, to stand still and watch God work and there is no better place for you to be right here than in this community, with DAB, with your brothers and sisters, listening to the word read fresh every day. God’s word is perfect and true, it’s just and it’s right, it’s life-giving, it’s healing, it’s restoration. And I’m just gonna tell you that God’s the same God yesterday, today and forever. We listen to today the story of Moses, fleeing the Egyptians and God providing a miracle but He provides a miracle every single day, a miracle hope and restoration and healing. And I just want to tell you that I can’t name all the names, I can’t remember everybody that’s called in but I do, you need to understand that there are millions of them, just like me, that every day we listen and every day we pray with you and we stand with you. And maybe we don’t mention all of our names but brother, there’s a whole army, there’s a whole family of brothers and sisters out here, there standing with you in your plight. And I would ask you even for my own family. My wife is going into surgery in two days, she’s been fighting breast cancer and six years ago they told us we had little chance to survive. And we started the DAB and it’s been life-giving. It’s been healing, it’s been restoration to us, it’s been wisdom and counsel and I thank God for this podcast for Brian, for Jill, for the Hardin family, for all they’ve done. But for all of you out there, for the DAB family. God bless you. So, stay right here brother, this is the best place you can be with people that love you, will support you every day. God bless.

Good morning this is Janus and I have a prayer request to submit for myself but also for all of us as we go through Exodus, I’m reminded of something. I know that it’s easy to see how the people are complaining and to even criticize and think that it’s just so unreasonable with everything they’ve experienced and all the miracles and you know, for them to be complaining seems crazy. However, I am a survivor of sex trafficking when I was a teenager. I’m in my 40s now. So, this has been some years past, but the trauma and the fallout, definitely has followed me in various ways and infiltrated in every aspect of my life and has caused me to, I guess it’s the root of it, to have such a low understanding or feeling of self-worth and that has caused a complaining spirit in my heart. I don’t think I verbalize it often. I’m glad that I don’t but I know I feel it in my heart. I just am generally quiet about it. The heart is what is important. So, I know that I all of have been or a lot of us can relate to being set free from some kind of slavery, whether it was actual slavery as I was or if it was some addiction or something else and my prayer is that we would be able to get past ourselves and past our trauma and not complain and wander in the wilderness and instead to believe the promises that are for us. I pray this for all of us and I ask for you to do the same. In Jesus name. Amen.

Hello DAB family this is Christina calling in from Kansas City, Missouri. I just want to say I’m a first-time caller, this is my first year listening in and I actually was invited by one of my clients, I’m a hairdresser, by my client, Laura. I told her I was struggling to figure out ways to get the word in and you know with my busy schedule and everything and she suggested this app to me and I started listening around January 20th and I have listened to every single one from the first all the way up until now. I had been listening probably 2 to 3, sometimes four times a day just to get caught up. I am caught up now. So, I’m excited you know, for the journey that God will have me on this year and I’m excited for this community. I’m blessed to hear all the prayers and just how tight this community is and I also want to say to Brian that your voice just captivated me and it just drew me in and I know that’s the Lord using you and I’m very thankful for that. So, this is really good for me. I listen going into work. I listen leaving work. I it's…it’s a really good thing. And so, I just want to say thank you to everyone and just everything you guys are doing here is such a beautiful thing and if you guys can lift me up in prayer. You know, I have you know, four children and I’m married and just lift up our family. We, we kinda fallen in our faith a little bit and I just want to get back on track with everything and I just want to serve God in and…and love others and just…just pray for us and thank you for all that you guys do. In Jesus name. Amen.

Hi, this message is for the Jackie out of Canada, I believe she said. This is New Envision Growth calling from New York and I just wanted to, if I could give you a virtual hug, I would. Your call just really just really resonated to me. I understand exactly where you’re coming from. And I just want to tell you to keep the faith. I know that seems a little corny and cliché, but it is the truth. I was diagnosed with endometriosis and 2017 so I understand that difficulty with having infertility issues and being surrounded by people who have, you know, your support and love you but to me, unless you’re really going through it you don’t know what it feels like. And I’m still believing and hoping on my miracle child, I’ll be 46 this year and I’m still believing. At the end of the day, I’m gonna believe the report of the Lord and I know that God can do the impossible. I know that He’s still in control and you, even said yourself, you have a mustard seed faith and that is all you need. I had to ask myself one day, if it never happens for me, if I’m never able to conceive, will I ever stop loving God? No, I will never stop loving Him. I will always give Him a yes because I know that His way is better than mine. I don’t know, but He knows all, He is all-knowing, all-powerful and all-loving. He is our Father and He will never leave us nor forsake us, even when it seems like no way out. And even with the relationship, maybe it didn’t work out for reason. Just continue to trust in Him. Continue to have that faith and I’m praying and believing for us all that have these issues, that it’s gonna happen.

Hey, DAB family. I just wanted to call in as a first-time caller. My name is Cody. I love for you guys to call me Phil 4:13, cause I love everyone’s usernames on this app. And look, today’s February 2, 2022, it’s 2 AM as I’m recording this and I just felt the urge to call, because it’s been a month since I started listening to the Daily Audio Bible. You know, January 2 was the first day and it was in a car, it was a road trip from Virginia down to Tampa Bay. So, pretty long one. Long story short, I actually was the one driving and we got into a car accident, my first every car accident. Luckily, everyone was okay and my car and the car in front of us. You know, we were still able to go down there, but Lord knows I was not the one who was gonna be in the driver seat anymore. So, with my brother in the driver seat, he decided to play the first day of the Daily Audio Bible and I absolutely loved it. So, from that point on, I made it a routine to listen to this every time I brush, usually it’s past midnight. So, I’d have the next day’s recording and it’s just so nice to end the day with that and yeah. Just a little praise offering for the Daily Audio Bible for just providing this opportunity to listen to the Bible all the way through and looking forward to the rest in this journey with ya’ll. I love you guys and God bless.

The Daily Audio Bible Reading for Saturday February 5, 2022 (NIV)

Exodus 21:22-23:13

22 When people who are fighting injure a pregnant woman so that she has a miscarriage but no other injury occurs, then the guilty party will be fined what the woman’s husband demands, as negotiated with the judges. 23 If there is further injury, then you will give a life for a life, 24 an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth, a hand for a hand, a foot for a foot, 25 a burn for a burn, a bruise for a bruise, a wound for a wound.

26 When a slave owner hits and blinds the eye of a male or female slave, he should let the slave go free on account of the eye. 27 If he knocks out a tooth of a male or female slave, he should let the slave go free on account of the tooth.

Instructions about animals and property

28 When an ox gores a man or a woman to death, the ox should be stoned to death, and the meat of the ox shouldn’t be eaten. But the owner of the ox shouldn’t be punished. 29 However, if the ox had gored people in the past and its owner had been warned but didn’t watch out for it, and the ox ends up killing a man or a woman, then the ox should be stoned to death, and its owner should also be put to death. 30 If the owner has to pay compensation instead, he must pay the agreed amount to save his life. 31 If the ox gores a boy or a girl, this same case law applies to the owner. 32 If the ox gores a male or female slave, the owner will pay thirty silver shekels to the slave’s owner, and the ox will be stoned to death.

33 When someone leaves a pit open or digs a pit and doesn’t cover it and an ox or a donkey falls into the pit, 34 the owner of the pit must make good on the loss. He should pay money to the ox’s owner, but he may keep the dead animal.

35 When someone’s ox hurts someone else’s ox and it dies, then they should sell the live ox and divide its price. They should also divide the dead animal between them. 36 But if the ox was known for goring in the past and its owner hadn’t watched out for it, the owner must make good the loss, an ox for an ox, but may keep the dead animal.

22 [a] When someone steals an ox or a sheep and then slaughters or sells it, the thief must pay back five oxen for the one ox or four sheep for the one sheep.

[b] If the thief is caught breaking in and is beaten and dies, the one who killed him won’t be guilty of bloodshed. However, if this happens in broad daylight, then the one who killed him is guilty of bloodshed. For his part, the thief must make good on what he stole. If he has nothing, he must be sold to pay for his theft. If an animal (whether ox, donkey, or sheep) is found alive in the thief’s possession, he must pay back double.

When someone lets an animal loose to eat in another person’s field and causes the field or vineyard to be stripped of its crop, the owner must pay them back with the best from his own field or vineyard.

When someone starts a fire and it catches in thorns and then spreads to someone else’s stacked grain, standing grain, or a whole field, the one who started the fire must fully repay the loss.

When someone entrusts money or other items to another person to keep safe and they are stolen from the other person’s house and the thief is caught, the thief must pay back double. If the thief isn’t caught, the owner of the house should be brought before God to determine whether or not the owner stole the other’s property.

When any dispute of ownership over an ox, donkey, sheep, piece of clothing, or any other loss arises in which someone claims, “This is mine,” the cases of both parties should come before God. The one whom God finds at fault must pay double to the other.

10 When someone gives a donkey, ox, sheep, or any other animal to another person to keep safe, and the animal dies or is injured or taken and no one saw what happened, 11 the person should swear a solemn pledge before the Lord in the presence of the owner that he didn’t touch the other’s property. The owner must accept that, and no payment needs to be made. 12 But if the animal was stolen, the person must make full payment to its owner. 13 If the animal was attacked and ripped apart and its torn body is brought as evidence, no payment needs to be made.

14 When someone borrows an animal from another and it is injured or dies while the owner isn’t present, full payment must be made. 15 If the owner was present, no payment needs to be made. If the animal was hired, only the fee for hiring the animal is due.

Instructions about social and religious matters

16 When a man seduces a young woman who isn’t engaged to be married yet and he sleeps with her, he must marry her and pay the bride-price for her. 17 But if her father absolutely refuses to let them marry, he must still pay the same amount as the bride-price for young women.

18 Don’t allow a female sorcerer to live.

19 Anyone who has sexual relations with an animal should be put to death.

20 Anyone who offers sacrifices to any god, other than the Lord alone, should be destroyed.

21 Don’t mistreat or oppress an immigrant, because you were once immigrants in the land of Egypt. 22 Don’t treat any widow or orphan badly. 23 If you do treat them badly and they cry out to me, you can be sure that I’ll hear their cry. 24 I’ll be furious, and I’ll kill you with the sword. Then your wives will be widows, and your children will be orphans.

25 If you lend money to my people who are poor among you, don’t be a creditor and charge them interest. 26 If you take a piece of clothing from someone as a security deposit, you should return it before the sun goes down. 27 His clothing may well be his only blanket to cover himself. What else will that person have to sleep in? And if he cries out to me, I’ll listen, because I’m compassionate.

28 Don’t say a curse against God, and don’t curse your people’s chief.

29 Don’t delay offering the produce of your vineyards and winepresses. Give me your oldest son. 30 Do the same with your oxen and with your sheep. They should stay with their mother for seven days. On the eighth day, you should give them to me.

31 You are holy people to me. Don’t eat any meat killed by wild animals out in the field. Throw it to the dogs instead.

23 Don’t spread false rumors. Don’t plot with evil people to act as a lying witness. Don’t take sides with important people to do wrong. When you act as a witness, don’t stretch the truth to favor important people. But don’t privilege unimportant people in their lawsuits either.

When you happen to come upon your enemy’s ox or donkey that has wandered off, you should bring it back to them.

When you see a donkey that belongs to someone who hates you and it’s lying down under its load and you are inclined not to help set it free, you must help set it free.

Don’t undermine the justice that your poor deserve in their lawsuits. Stay away from making a false charge. Don’t put an innocent person who is in the right to death, because I will not consider innocent those who do such evil. Don’t take a bribe, because a bribe blinds the clear-sighted and subverts the cause of those who are in the right.

Don’t oppress an immigrant. You know what it’s like to be an immigrant, because you were immigrants in the land of Egypt.

Sabbaths and festivals

10 For six years you should plant crops on your land and gather in its produce. 11 But in the seventh year you should leave it alone and undisturbed so that the poor among your people may eat. What they leave behind, the wild animals may eat. You should do the same with your vineyard and your olive trees.

12 Do your work in six days. But on the seventh day you should rest so that your ox and donkey may rest, and even the child of your female slave and the immigrant may be refreshed.

13 Be careful to obey everything that I have said to you. Don’t call on the names of other gods. Don’t even mention them.

Matthew 24:1-28

The temple’s fate

24 Now Jesus left the temple and was going away. His disciples came to point out to him the temple buildings. He responded, “Do you see all these things? I assure that no stone will be left on another. Everything will be demolished.”

Beginning of troubles

Now while Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately and said, “Tell us, when will these things happen? What will be the sign of your coming and the end of the age?”

Jesus replied, “Watch out that no one deceives you. Many will come in my name, saying, ‘I’m the Christ.’ They will deceive many people. You will hear about wars and reports of wars. Don’t be alarmed. These things must happen, but this isn’t the end yet. Nations and kingdoms will fight against each other, and there will be famines and earthquakes in all sorts of places. But all these things are just the beginning of the sufferings associated with the end. They will arrest you, abuse you, and they will kill you. All nations will hate you on account of my name. 10 At that time many will fall away. They will betray each other and hate each other. 11 Many false prophets will appear and deceive many people. 12 Because disobedience will expand, the love of many will grow cold. 13 But the one who endures to the end will be delivered. 14 This gospel of the kingdom will be proclaimed throughout the world as a testimony to all the nations. Then the end will come.

The great suffering

15 “When you see the disgusting and destructive thing that Daniel talked about standing in the holy place (the reader should understand this), 16 then those in Judea must escape to the mountains. 17 Those on the roof shouldn’t come down to grab things from their houses. 18 Those in the field shouldn’t come back to grab their clothes. 19 How terrible it will be at that time for women who are pregnant and for women who are nursing their children. 20 Pray that it doesn’t happen in winter or on the Sabbath day. 21 There will be great suffering such as the world has never before seen and will never again see. 22 If that time weren’t shortened, nobody would be rescued. But for the sake of the ones whom God chose, that time will be cut short.

23 “Then if somebody says to you, ‘Look, here’s the Christ,’ or ‘He’s over here,’ don’t believe it. 24 False christs and false prophets will appear, and they will offer great signs and wonders in order to deceive, if possible, even those whom God has chosen. 25 Look, I’ve told you ahead of time. 26 So if they say to you, ‘Look, he’s in the desert,’ don’t go out. And if they say, ‘Look, he’s in the rooms deep inside the house,’ don’t believe it. 27 Just as the lightning flashes from the east to the west, so it will be with the coming of the Human One.[a] 28 The vultures gather wherever there’s a dead body.

Psalm 29

Psalm 29

A psalm of David.

29 You, divine beings! Give to the Lord
give to the Lord glory and power!
Give to the Lord the glory due his name!
Bow down to the Lord in holy splendor!

The Lord’s voice is over the waters;
the glorious God thunders;
the Lord is over the mighty waters.
The Lord’s voice is strong;
the Lord’s voice is majestic.
The Lord’s voice breaks cedar trees—
yes, the Lord shatters the cedars of Lebanon.
He makes Lebanon jump around like a young bull,
makes Sirion jump around like a young wild ox.
The Lord’s voice unleashes fiery flames;
the Lord’s voice shakes the wilderness—
yes, the Lord shakes the wilderness of Kadesh.
The Lord’s voice convulses the oaks,
strips the forests bare,
but in his temple everyone shouts, “Glory!”
10 The Lord sits enthroned over the floodwaters;
the Lord sits enthroned—king forever!

11 Let the Lord give strength to his people!
Let the Lord bless his people with peace!

Proverbs 7:6-23

When from the window of my house,
from behind the screen, I gazed down,
I looked among the naive young men
and noticed among the youth, one who had no sense.
He was crossing the street at her corner
and walked down the path to her house
in the early evening,
at the onset of night and darkness.
10 All of a sudden a woman approaches him,
dressed like a prostitute and with a cunning mind.
11 She is noisy and defiant;
her feet don’t stay long in her own house.
12 She has one foot in the street, one foot in the public square.
She lies in wait at every corner.
13 She grabs him and kisses him.
Her face is brazen as she speaks to him:
14 “I’ve made a sacrifice of well-being;
today I fulfilled my solemn promises.
15 So I’ve come out to meet you,
seeking you, and I have found you.
16 I’ve spread my bed with luxurious covers,
with colored linens from Egypt.
17 I’ve sprinkled my bed with myrrh,
aloes, and cinnamon.
18 Come, let’s drink deep of love until morning;
let’s savor our lovemaking.
19 For my husband isn’t home;
he’s gone far away.
20 He took a pouch of money with him;
he won’t come home till full moon.”
21 She seduces him with all her talk.
She entices him with her flattery.
22 He goes headlong after her,
like an ox to the slaughter,
like a deer leaping into a trap,[a]
23 until an arrow pierces his liver,
like a bird hurrying to the snare,
not aware that it will cost him his life.

Exodus 19:16-21:21, Matthew 23:13-39, Psalms 28:1-9, Proverbs 7:1-5

Today is the 4th day of February welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I’m Brian it’s great to be here with you today as we continue our journey forward through the Scriptures this year. And today we will pick up where we left off yesterday. We are in the wilderness with the children of Israel who are being remade. They are…they are transforming from slaves into God’s chosen people and a lot of lessons are being learned. So, yesterday Moses learned lessons about delegation and getting help. His two sons and his wife have come and joined the camp of Israel after all of the things that happened in Egypt. And now God has told Moses that He is coming to the people to speak with the people, and they are to prepare. And, so, we’ll pick up the story there. Exodus chapter 19 verse 16 through chapter 21 verse 21.

Commentary:

Okay, so there are a number of things we should observe from today’s reading both from Exodus and from Matthew because in some ways we get a little bit of a before and after view. We’ll talk about that in the second. First off, God had told the people to prepare themselves, to purify themselves, and to come to the mountain that He had descended upon that He was going to speak to the people, but upon the mountain were smoke and thunder and lightning and all matter of things that terrified the people terrified them of God. And, so, in the end they came to Moses and said, “Don’t let God speak to us. You listen to God and then you tell us what God said and then we will obey God by obeying you.” And this certainly does give us the foundation for the…the role of the prophet in Hebrew life, especially in biblical Hebrew life. But let’s remember, God didn’t say to the people, “you come near the mountain, I’m gonna talk to Moses, Moses is gonna talk to you.” What God said was, “I’m gonna speak to the people.” He was gnna speak directly to the people. And they rejected that in favor of an intermediary. And we can think, yeah, whatever, that’s no big deal, but it…it does become a larger issue in the writings of Paul, which we haven’t gotten to yet. But let’s remember this moment at Mount Sinai because it’s something that we will touch on in the future as we get a little bit further into the year. But we are also reaching a point now that…well…the 10 Commandments for example, were given in today’s reading. And, so, the things, the laws, the statutes, the customs, the holidays, the rituals, all of the things that would form a culture and bind it together, these things are beginning to be revealed in the wilderness to Moses. And this will go on for quite a while. We remember, these people only know how to be slaves in Egypt. So, those are the customs that they know and the things that pull them together, Egyptian slavery and how to navigate it. When where they’re headed his into a promised land where they will be self-governing under God. And, so, God begins to reveal what becomes known as the law or the Mosaic law, which is to form and govern the Hebrew people.

If we move into the book of Matthew from our reading today, we will have moved forward a couple of millennia. So, in our Old Testament reading we are at the very beginning of God starting to reveal the customs and cultures and statutes and the things that He expects it will form this people. In Matthew all of the law has been given, all of the people have gone through all kinds of things that people would go through in a couple thousand years. The law has been interpreted and reinterpreted, and we hear Jesus saying, “how terrible it will be for you legal experts and Pharisees, you hypocrites, you shut people out of the kingdom of heaven. You don’t enter yourselves and you won’t allow those who want to enter to do so.” So, that’s like a little bit of the before and after. It’s like the law is just beginning to be given in Exodus. In Matthew we see God made flesh commenting on the very people that are to lead God’s people in obedience to the covenant of the law. And it is that very law that impart turns the religious leaders against Jesus for things like profaning the Sabbath Day or blasphemy. Those things are against the Mosaic law, at least against the way that the Mosaic law was being interpreted. And, so, over the course of time we’re goona have the opportunity to look at this and through the lens of the apostle Paul we’ll have some interpretation that fundamentally boils down to the spirit of the law or the letter of the law. The letter of the law are the words as their written. The spirit of the law is that before the law was given there was a set of circumstances or behaviors or something going on that required that this law be defined in such a way, the spirit of the law. And we don’t have time to dive into all that today, we couldn’t dive into that just today. That will emerge over time as we move through the law and move deeper into the Gospels. But right here on the front-end as the law is just beginning to be revealed it’s good for us to at least kinda understand these categories. Like, if…if in our nations, because all of our nations have rules and regulations and even customs and rituals, but we have laws and by the letter of the law, if the law is broke, it’s a black-and-white thing which really doesn’t leave any room for mercy or for context. And this is pretty important in the New Testament as the understanding of the Christian faith is being revealed.

Prayer:

Father, we thank You for the majesty of Your word. We thank You for the Scriptures and all of the different nuances. Each day is touching something different, whether that being enlightening us with knowledge or that being cutting us to the heart and causing repentance. And, so, we are grateful. And Holy Spirit as we move into this territory in the wilderness, we ask that You lead us into all truth. And we pray this in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Hi, this message is for a little Kayla praying for her friend Azarah. So, Kayla thank you for your faithfulness and standing in the gap for your friend. And God we just ask for Azarah right now, You will touch her body, You will heal every cell, everything that’s not from You God You will remove it from her body, that her body will be restored to new…restored to normal. So, I just ask You Lord for…to touch Azarah’s body God, that she is healed right now in the name of Jesus, that she will wake up in the morning and be completely healed. The doctors will be astounded and…and she’ll say,” well…of course. My friend Kayla prayed for me. That’s why. That’s why I’m healed.” So, we just thank You God. We just ask You to lift up Layla and Azarah’s friendship God, that they would be like…like closer than two sisters God. So, we just thank You and ask You for this in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Good morning, everybody. Hey this is Annette from Oklahoma City. I would like to respond to the gentleman who was trying to get into the ministry and then found that his past was creeping up on him a little bit. Brother, boy oh boy I have been there myself. Before I got into the Daily Audio Bible my life was a mess and I didn’t really care too much about if I lied to people. I had a filthy mouth. I had a dirty mind. I was probably everything that the…the New Testament says that you shouldn’t be, like don’t be thinking on these things. I…I think I hit every one of them. And then I got real sick and I had limes disease and it messed up my memory pretty much. I mean a lot like. A lot of my life’s missing. It’s really weird. And then sometimes I see people from my past that I haven’t seen in a long time, and it makes me go, “Oh no. I can’t. I can’t remember. How did this go?” You know, “was I awful to this person? Did I say something bad?” You know? And…and all I can do now is go…I look at that person and I go, “you know what? I…I…I remember you and I would like to tell you that I’m sorry if I ever hurt you or offended you.” And that’s where it leaves me today. So, now it makes me afraid, like I hope I don’t hurt somebody you know. It makes me very conscious of my actions today. Almost like I had to just dump all my friends. I was very lonely for a long time because when I realized where these people put me, I was like I don’t want to go back there again. So, I’m gonna pray for you and I just hope that you take a stand against yourself. And I mean that you understand what’s right and wrong and hopefully, you know, you can get yourself squared away. And it just takes time. It takes time for people to learn how to trust you again. And…but if you prove yourself to be an honorable person, you know, and you just you focus on the things that are good and right you’ll make it. You’ll make it and the Lord’s gonna reveal a path. Maybe He just needed to stretch you a little bit more. Okay? I love you. You have a great day everybody. Bye-bye.

Good morning DAB family this is Laura in Colorado. I just have a prayer request I’d like to put before you guys. I know we have so many prayer warriors here. My family is feeling called to foster a baby girl. I work in the NICU. And this baby needs a place to go, and we really feel called to be ever come be a part of our family, temporarily if that’s what’s necessary. So, would you please pray with me for that? There’s a lot of moving parts and right now some uncertainty and just need wisdom and clarity and for God’s will to be done over this little life. So, thank you family for all your prayers.

Hi everybody it’s beloved in Texas. I just want to play for __ from Nebraska. Girl I’m __ too and I know what that’s like. And I know it’s a completely different animal and your mind races and you just don’t seem to know what end is up. And the bad part is is when you’re depressed you don’t even care. You don’t care which end is up. So, I just want to pray for you right now. I just pray for peace, clarity, and a joy that surpasses all understanding in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Good morning, DAB family this is Laura in Haverhill Florida. I’m calling this morning on February 1st to pray for Dave from the UK. Dave who has two…has 18 year old twin sons, I pray for Dave and his wife that they would be strengthened, their faith would not fail, that they would not give up and Lord that they…they would trust You with the lives of these boys. I pray for the one of the wheelchair Father who had cerebral palsy. Father, please give this child relief from pain. Please help him to be able to have sleep, sweet sleep at night, Father that he would be able to not give up, that his faith would stay strong, and Lord that You would heal his boy, that You would heal him, that You would take away the pain. Father, I pray for the other son that is dealing with the seizures every week. Lord You know what’s causing the seizures and I pray Father God for healing for this boy. Oh, Father I know that when we see our children suffer that Lord its hard on us because God we love our kids so much. And I can only imagine how much You love them, how much You love us. Father I pray that Your love would be overflowing in this home, that You Father would protect their hearts and minds from doubts from giving up, from anger, from distress, from depression. Lord I pray Father for strength for all of these all of these people in this family. And…and Lord I just pray for healing, complete healing in Jesus’ name. Thank You, Holy Spirit.
