1 Chronicles 24:1-26:11, Romans 4:1-12, Psalms 13:1-6, Proverbs 19:15-16

Today is the 17th day of July welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I am Brian and it…it’s a joy to be here around the Global Campfire with you today. It’s an honor and a privilege to take the next step forward together. We’re rounding out a week continuing the journey. We’ve been reading from the Christian Standard Bible this week. Today First Chronicles chapter 24 verse 1 through 26 verse 11.

Prayer:

Father, we thank you for your word and we thank you for another week that we’ve been gifted with life and the opportunity to be informed by and instructed by your word. And even as we continue this journey through Romans, we thank you for all that we are being taught. Today we’re…were looking at Abraham believing and being counted righteous before you and Paul telling us that that’s how it is for everyone. We believe you. We trust you and our sins are no more, no more counted against us, removed as far as the east is from the west. Holy Spirit come and help this truth, this reality, this way of being to sink in, so that we might live free. We pray this in the mighty name of Jesus. Amen.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Hi DAB community this is Shellravenel from the DMV your marriage coach here. I wanted to pray for Jillian in particular. She’s struggling with some anxiety. And I wanted to reach out and just pray for her because I know what that feels like. I…I too have had challenges with anxiety. I first experienced my anxiety attack if you would back in 2017 – 2018. I had no idea what was going on, so I know what that feels like. And I just want to pray that you Jillian cast all your cares on the Lord, that He cares for you, He does not slumber nor sleep, He’s always up, He’s always attentive to needs, that He is taking on every issue, every problem, every concern that you have. You don’t have to worry and wonder about His ability or about tomorrow or the day after that for each day will take care of its own. So, I pray that the peace of God which surpasses all understanding will be with you. I pray that everything that you’re concerned about that God is going to map out the plan for you, that He’s already sent the Holy Spirit to aid and to guide you and that you have your family around you. I pray that your mind is renewed in the name of Jesus. Let this mind be with you that it just also in Christ Jesus, when those thoughts come, self-sabotaging negative thoughts or worrisome thoughts you automatically give those thoughts unto the Lord and you will leave them there. I just pray that God just does something supernatural within you, supernatural within your mind, your emotions, and your will for it’s in Jesus’ name Amen.

Hey, DABbers this is Nick from Florida. I just wanted to call in in response to Willow from Marietta and Laquita from Vinita OK. Thank you so much for your prayers. It’s very encouraging and hopeful for me to know you’re out there praying for this situation. I know that God loves you both and He wants you to continue to be a part of this ministry and for His honor and glory. Laquita I also wanted to say to you thank you so much for your prayers and I…I do believe God is going to open a door like you said to reach Beth and show her that God loves her and wants her to be led to salvation. I also wanted to reach out to Margo the missionary to Liberia and her husband to encourage you to let you know you’re on the right path and God loves you and He loves what you’re doing for His Kingdom. And going through the books of Acts right now the apostle Paul speaks of the joy in suffering. And I think that’s what’s happening to you right now with your compassion fatigue. I wanted to let you know a couple verses or 6 verses actually to give you encouragement that is first Peter 3:14, first Peter 4:1, first Peter 5:10, second Corinthians 4:17, second Timothy 3:12, and Colossians 1:24. Love you all Dabbers. You have a great day and I’ll talk to you next time.

Good evening family this is Soaring on Eagles wings from Canada on July 14th. Kingdom Seeker Daniel I heard your prayer request for LOV and the family after hearing the news of her son’s death. And what a traumatic time this must be for all of you. And, so, I pray for Tanya, Nicole, and Bill senior, their dad and LOV as they go through this period of unexpected pain. Know that God is with you, the comforter, He’s there to comfort you and dry your tears. And for KSD, I know you want to go see your son and I pray that God would give you wisdom on what is the right thing to do at this time and so many things are happening. I’m praying for all of you. Susan who has cancer and has now metastasized to her bone. She has a husband Jeff and five kids. I’m praying for them. Someone called in for his sister-in-law from the Philippines who’s been diagnosed with colon cancer, and she has a husband and two sons. Father God You’re the miracle working God and the healer. Hear the prayers of Your people as they call upon You for your divine intervention and may receive and hear of…

Hey there guys this is Colton Poole, live in Georgia, 13 years old this is my first time calling, actually my first year listening too. So, that’s exciting but I started strong in January, January the 1st and I only went to February, I think it was the 5th because school went out of virtual and it got really hard to balance all the schoolwork I was having and also do Daily Audio Bible. And when school got hard I quit listening and that was pretty bad because I know…I know now after listening to a few more on what’s the day, July 14th that…well…I should have prayed to the Lord for help during school but I didn’t and I…I know my mistake and I’m going to see if I can’t get back on and start listening. But yeah, I just wanted to ask for y’alls prayer because I know the DAB community family is just amazing. So, yeah. Thank you.

1 Chronicles 24:1-26:11

The Divisions of the Priests

24 The divisions of the descendants of Aaron were as follows: Aaron’s sons were Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar.(A) But Nadab and Abihu died before their father, and they had no sons, so Eleazar and Ithamar served as priests.(B) Together with Zadok(C) from the descendants of Eleazar and Ahimelech from the descendants of Ithamar, David divided them according to the assigned duties of their service. Since more leaders were found among Eleazar’s descendants than Ithamar’s, they were divided accordingly: sixteen heads of ancestral families[a] were from Eleazar’s descendants, and eight heads of ancestral families were from Ithamar’s. They(D) were assigned by lot, for there were officers of the sanctuary and officers of God among both Eleazar’s and Ithamar’s descendants.

The secretary, Shemaiah son of Nethanel, a Levite, recorded them in the presence of the king and the officers, the priest Zadok, Ahimelech(E) son of Abiathar, and the heads of families of the priests and the Levites. One ancestral family[b] was taken for Eleazar, and then one for Ithamar.

The first lot fell to Jehoiarib, the second to Jedaiah,

the third to Harim, the fourth to Seorim,

the fifth to Malchijah, the sixth to Mijamin,

10 the seventh to Hakkoz, the eighth to Abijah,(F)

11 the ninth to Jeshua, the tenth to Shecaniah,

12 the eleventh to Eliashib, the twelfth to Jakim,

13 the thirteenth to Huppah, the fourteenth to Jeshebeab,

14 the fifteenth to Bilgah, the sixteenth to Immer,

15 the seventeenth to Hezir, the eighteenth to Happizzez,

16 the nineteenth to Pethahiah, the twentieth to Jehezkel,

17 the twenty-first to Jachin, the twenty-second to Gamul,

18 the twenty-third to Delaiah, and the twenty-fourth to Maaziah.

19 These had their assigned duties for service when they entered the Lord’s temple, according to their regulations, which they received from their ancestor Aaron, as the Lord God of Israel had commanded him.

The Rest of the Levites

20 As for the rest of Levi’s sons:

from Amram’s sons: Shubael;

from Shubael’s sons: Jehdeiah.

21 From Rehabiah:

from Rehabiah’s sons: Isshiah was the first.

22 From the Izharites: Shelomoth;

from Shelomoth’s sons: Jahath.

23 Hebron’s[c](G) sons:

Jeriah the first, Amariah the second,

Jahaziel the third, and Jekameam the fourth.

24 From Uzziel’s sons: Micah;

from Micah’s sons: Shamir.

25 Micah’s brother: Isshiah;

from Isshiah’s sons: Zechariah.

26 Merari’s sons: Mahli and Mushi,

and from his sons, Jaaziah his son.[d]

27 Merari’s sons, by his son Jaaziah:[e]

Shoham, Zaccur, and Ibri.

28 From Mahli: Eleazar, who had no sons.

29 From Kish, from Kish’s sons: Jerahmeel.

30 Mushi’s sons: Mahli, Eder, and Jerimoth.

Those were the descendants of the Levites according to their ancestral families.[f] 31 They also cast lots the same way as their relatives the descendants of Aaron did in the presence of King David, Zadok, Ahimelech, and the heads of the families of the priests and Levites—the family heads and their younger brothers alike.(H)

The Levitical Musicians

25 David and the officers of the army also set apart some of the sons of Asaph, Heman,(I) and Jeduthun, who were to prophesy(J) accompanied by lyres, harps, and cymbals.(K) This is the list of the men who performed their service:

From Asaph’s sons:

Zaccur, Joseph, Nethaniah, and Asarelah, sons of Asaph, under Asaph’s authority, who prophesied under the authority of the king.

From Jeduthun:(L) Jeduthun’s sons:

Gedaliah, Zeri, Jeshaiah, Shimei,[g] Hashabiah, and Mattithiah—six—under the authority of their father Jeduthun, prophesying to the accompaniment of lyres, giving thanks and praise to the Lord.

From Heman: Heman’s sons:

Bukkiah, Mattaniah, Uzziel, Shebuel, Jerimoth, Hananiah, Hanani, Eliathah, Giddalti, Romamti-ezer, Joshbekashah, Mallothi, Hothir, and Mahazioth. All these sons of Heman, the king’s seer,(M) were given by the promises of God to exalt him,[h] for God had given Heman fourteen sons and three daughters.

All these men were under their own fathers’ authority for the music in the Lord’s temple, with cymbals, harps, and lyres for the service of God’s temple. Asaph, Jeduthun, and Heman were under the king’s authority. They numbered 288 together with their relatives who were all trained and skillful in music for the Lord. They cast lots for their duties, young and old alike, teacher as well as pupil.(N)

The first lot for Asaph fell to Joseph, his sons, and his relatives—12[i]
to Gedaliah the second: him, his relatives, and his sons—12
10 the third to Zaccur, his sons, and his relatives—12
11 the fourth to Izri,[j] his sons, and his relatives—12
12 the fifth to Nethaniah, his sons, and his relatives—12
13 the sixth to Bukkiah, his sons, and his relatives—12
14 the seventh to Jesarelah, his sons, and his relatives—12
15 the eighth to Jeshaiah, his sons, and his relatives—12
16 the ninth to Mattaniah, his sons, and his relatives—12
17 the tenth to Shimei, his sons, and his relatives—12
18 the eleventh to Azarel,[k] his sons, and his relatives—12
19 the twelfth to Hashabiah, his sons, and his relatives—12
20 the thirteenth to Shubael, his sons, and his relatives—12
21 the fourteenth to Mattithiah, his sons, and his relatives—12
22 the fifteenth to Jeremoth, his sons, and his relatives—12
23 the sixteenth to Hananiah, his sons, and his relatives—12
24 the seventeenth to Joshbekashah, his sons, and his relatives—12
25 the eighteenth to Hanani, his sons, and his relatives—12
26 the nineteenth to Mallothi, his sons, and his relatives—12
27 the twentieth to Eliathah, his sons, and his relatives—12
28 the twenty-first to Hothir, his sons, and his relatives—12
29 the twenty-second to Giddalti, his sons, and his relatives—12
30 the twenty-third to Mahazioth, his sons, and his relatives—12
31 and the twenty-fourth to Romamti-ezer, his sons, and his relatives—12.

The Levitical Gatekeepers

26 The following were the divisions of the gatekeepers:

From the Korahites: Meshelemiah son of Kore, one of the sons of Asaph.

Meshelemiah had sons:

Zechariah the firstborn, Jediael the second,

Zebadiah the third, Jathniel the fourth,

Elam the fifth, Jehohanan the sixth,

and Eliehoenai the seventh.

Obed-edom also had sons:

Shemaiah the firstborn, Jehozabad the second,

Joah the third, Sachar the fourth,

Nethanel the fifth, Ammiel the sixth,

Issachar the seventh, and Peullethai the eighth,

for God blessed him.

Also, to his son Shemaiah were born sons who ruled their ancestral families[l] because they were strong, capable men.

Shemaiah’s sons: Othni, Rephael, Obed, and Elzabad; his relatives Elihu and Semachiah were also capable men. All of these were among the sons of Obed-edom with their sons and relatives; they were capable men with strength for the work—sixty-two from Obed-edom.

Meshelemiah also had sons and relatives who were capable men—eighteen.

10 Hosah,(O) from the Merarites, also had sons: Shimri the first (although he was not the firstborn, his father had appointed him as the first), 11 Hilkiah the second, Tebaliah the third, and Zechariah the fourth. The sons and relatives of Hosah were thirteen in all.

Romans 4:1-12

Abraham Justified by Faith

What then will we say that Abraham, our forefather(A) according to the flesh, has found?[a] If Abraham was justified[b] by works,(B) he has something to boast about—but not before God. For what does the Scripture say? Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him for righteousness.[c](C) Now to the one who works,(D) pay is not credited as a gift, but as something owed. But to the one who does not work, but believes on him who justifies the ungodly,(E) his faith is credited for righteousness.

David Celebrating the Same Truth

Just as David also speaks of the blessing of the person to whom God credits righteousness apart from works:

Blessed are those whose lawless acts are forgiven
and whose sins are covered.
Blessed is the person
the Lord will never charge with sin.[d](F)

Abraham Justified before Circumcision

Is this blessing only for the circumcised,(G) then? Or is it also for the uncircumcised? For we say, Faith was credited to Abraham for righteousness.[e](H) 10 In what way, then, was it credited—while he was circumcised, or uncircumcised? It was not while he was circumcised, but uncircumcised. 11 And he received the sign of circumcision(I) as a seal of the righteousness that he had by faith[f](J) while still uncircumcised. This was to make him the father(K) of all who believe(L) but are not circumcised, so that righteousness may be credited to them also. 12 And he became the father of the circumcised, who are not only circumcised but who also follow in the footsteps of the faith our father Abraham had while he was still uncircumcised.

Psalm 13

A Plea for Deliverance

For the choir director. A psalm of David.

How long, Lord? Will you forget me forever?
How long will you hide your face from me?(A)
How long will I store up anxious concerns[a] within me,
agony in my mind every day?
How long will my enemy dominate me?(B)

Consider me and answer, Lord my God.
Restore brightness to my eyes;(C)
otherwise, I will sleep in death.
My enemy will say, “I have triumphed over him,”
and my foes will rejoice because I am shaken.(D)

But I have trusted in your faithful love;(E)
my heart will rejoice in your deliverance.(F)
I will sing to the Lord
because he has treated me generously.(G)

1 Chronicles 22:1-23:32, Romans 3:9-31, Psalm 12:1-8, Proverbs 19:13-14

Today is the 16th day of July, welcome to the Daily Audio Bible, I am Brian it’s great to be here with you today as we take the next step forward toward the end of our week. We’ve been reading from the Christian Standard Bible this week, which is what will continue to do, 1 Chronicles chapter 22 and 23 today.

Commentary:

Okay, so have you ever realized that you are imperfect? I realize that pretty much every five minutes. But we don’t always think of it in those terms. We just kinda know nobody’s perfect and yet the reality of this faith is that we, as imperfect beings, are in a relationship with perfection and we know that God is loving, we know that He’s kind and patient and that His mercy endures forever, we’re living examples of that. Like, literally right now in our imperfection we’re experiencing God’s patience and kindness and endurance toward us but we’re not supposed to be staying in this state of imperfection, we’re supposed to be surrendering our imperfections, ourselves, we’re supposed to be surrendering these things to God; dying to that imperfect self and being resurrected alive, no longer we who live, but Christ who lives in us. So, even in ancient times when the law was given and we went through all of that entire story of Mount Sinai. This is God orienting his people in the right direction, weaving into the fabric of their very being in their very culture who He was and who they are and who, how they relate to one another and what their purpose is. So, if a law shows this way that the Hebrew people believe, like if you could obey this law perfectly than you would attain righteousness before God. And so, a person like Paul who was a Pharisee, a zealous Pharisee, was attempting to do just that even while he was persecuting followers of Jesus. He believes he’s doing just that, upholding the righteousness of God, defending the righteousness of God and trying to live into the law and become righteous before God. The problem is, nobody could do it, and so, if you can’t do it perfectly and do it perfectly all the time, then how will you ever be righteous? Which is what brings us to one of the central foundational pieces of the Christian faith that it is through faith in Christ. Christ Jesus was perfect, did live perfect and fulfilled this law and so we, on our own in our own strength, have no ability to achieve perfection but through Jesus, through faith in Christ than we are made righteous before God. So, that’s one piece of what Paul is beginning to lay out here with the other piece, the more controversy piece, at least in Paul’s time, the thing that really set things off the rail for the Hebrew people as it relates to Paul’s teachings is that, this is not exclusive, the whole world, Jew and Gentile alike male-female, bond free, Jew, Gentile, everyone is welcome. This is not the traditional Hebrew outlook; they believed they were set apart, chosen, set apart, exclusive and if you want to be in a relationship with the most high God than you follow His laws, you convert to Judaism or you’re born into it and you live within this culture. Paul is saying, well, sin though, like sin, everybody, like whether you are Jew or Gentile you sin, you face the same judgment. In other words God isn’t just God over just one group of people and He only looks at that one group but that one group of people’s sin. That’s the only thing He’s paying attention to but everybody else is involved in any way. God is God over all beings upon the earth. So, let me just quote from Romans so that it’s in Paul’s own words but now, apart from the law, the righteousness of God has been revealed, attested by the law and the prophets. The righteousness of God is through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe since there is no distinction; for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. They are justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Jesus Christ. So, all right, Jew or Gentile, all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God and yet all are welcome to be justified by faith in Christ Jesus receiving that redemption through Christ. Then he goes on to say like, this is the great equalizer friends nobody gets to boast or brag or say, I’m better than somebody else because of my spirituality, because my ethnicity or because of my religion. We have all fallen short and we are all redeemed in the same way nobody can boast, boasting is excluded, according to Paul. So, in other words, none of us deserve to be here. We are only here through faith in Christ and what Christ has done not what we have done or what we can do. Everyone has to come through the same doorway of faith. It is the equalizer, everyone comes broken, everyone can be redeemed. Now we who believe in Jesus we know this; we rejoice in this actually we’re so deeply grateful for this fundamental truth. But as we will continue to see as we continue our journey through the Bible this is very, very controversy at the time. This will brand Paul as a heretic and it’s interesting from this vantage point because we as believers, we can be like of course, why wouldn’t God want to restore all people to himself? Why, what, He loves us? He died for us. He’s opened the pathway to everybody. But then if we do some examining of our own lives, we find that it’s very, very, very easy to count people out, to consider that a person who could do or thinks this way or does those things certainly couldn’t call upon the name of the Lord or certainly isn’t calling upon the name of the Lord. Maybe those judgments are true and maybe they’re not, it’s just they’re not specifically and particularly helpful because we don’t have a say, we’re supposed to be loving toward those people not counting them out. And when we do, we find ourselves kind of in the position of the religious Jewish people that are very very much not able to understand the message of Jesus and are very much against what Paul is saying. So, as we continue through this letter to the Romans, we need to try to put ourselves on both sides of the equation and we’ll talk about both sides of the equation. But when we do that, you know it’s very easy for us to be on Paul’s team here. It’s in the New Testament. So, of course, we’re on Paul’s team and everybody who was against Paul, they’re the bad guys. And so, we can translate that into our own worldview and what Paul is saying, even to these people who are tremendously against him, he’s saying you are welcome to, all are welcome. There is a pathway for all of humanity to find redemption. There is a totally new way to be here. So, let’s watch both sides of the equation in our own hearts as we continue the journey through Romans.

Prayer:

And Holy Spirit we invite You to lead us to where we need to go, lead us in our hearts posture, lead us in the convictions and motivations of our hearts, lead us to love, lead us to be the light in the darkness we pray in Jesus’ name we ask. Amen.

Prayers and Encouragements:

Hey it’s Landon from Madison, I just wanted to call in a quick praise report. I called in earlier this year regarding my daughter who was identified to have a single or an isolated single umbilical artery and I wanted to let everybody know that I appreciate all the prayers and they were answered. Our daughter Elaina was born right on time and without any complications at all. So, I just wanted to update you guys on that and thank everybody for your prayers as they worked. God bless everybody. Bye.

Greetings to the church of the Daily Audio Bible, I’m calling to pray with everybody out there that loves an addict. Loving an addict is such a heard thing because we have to deal with the anger that comes from what is seemingly a bottomless pit of selfishness on the part of the addict. But like all things I think we need to catch, contact and perspective. And I think this allows us to pray with empathy and to believe that God will break through. Family, I lost my brother earlier this year to heart failure that was caused by an addiction. I’m still processing and unpacking all the feelings of anger and sadness and misunderstanding. And I’m still confused but I still know that God is good. And I place my faith in that. I want to give a shout out to our resident poet lariat Blind Tony, Victorious Soldier, I love your prayers. Slave of Jesus, it’s time to check in. And to Kingdom Seeker Daniel and Lady of Victory, we send our condolences and we are praying for you and your family. We’re praying fervently for you guys. And as always, a special prayer and blessing to Brian and Jill and their family. This is Delta Alpha FoxTrot calling from the Southern Texas Front.

Hey DAB family, James the Teacher in LA. I was reviewing some past episodes to find where I started listening this year cause I didn’t start in January and I saw that I highlighted an episode where Lisa the Encourager called in to thank me for calling in some years ago and praying for churches which sounds like something I would do and I wanted to thank you for encouraging and uplifting me, Lisa. And also realizing as I was thinking about it, God put the churches on my heart and I almost instantly started to cry, which is my sign that I need to pray. So, Father I pray for the churches of our nation and not just our nation but the churches of this world, Your church in this world, Your people. Who yes, we are under attack from the enemy all day every day in all kinds of ways but I pray for the joy of Your people. I pray that our joy would be Your joy because Your joy is our strength. Joy as a choice, not as…not just human happiness but the choice to trust that You are good that You are God that You are faithful and that whatever we suffer is not enough to destroy us or take us away from You. Lord, we love You. We praise You. And I ask this for all of us in Jesus name. Amen.

Hi, I’m calling in for Micah. Micah called in a couple days ago and I can’t stop thinking about him. His wife doesn’t find him attractive and he doesn’t know what to do. And Micah I just wanted to encourage you. Look to Jesus for your identity and for your beauty because it’s all in in Him. And trust Jesus to show your wife the beauty that you are. But focus on Him and know that your attractiveness is there and don’t try so hard to please a human and a human, no matter how important they are to you, don’t try so hard to please them by jumping through hoops and making muscles and then not finding yourself to be good enough. Because you are, you are His and you are loved and your identity is found in Him and your beauty is found in Him. Love you and I’m praying for you and my husband is praying for you.

1 Chronicles 22-23

22 Then David said, “This is the house of the Lord God, and this is the altar of burnt offering for Israel.”(A)

David’s Preparations for the Temple

So David gave orders to gather the resident aliens that were in the land of Israel,(B) and he appointed stonecutters to cut finished stones for building God’s house.(C) David supplied a great deal of iron to make the nails for the doors of the gates and for the fittings, together with an immeasurable quantity of bronze,(D) and innumerable cedar logs because the Sidonians and Tyrians had brought a large quantity of cedar logs to David.(E) David said, “My son Solomon is young and inexperienced, and the house that is to be built for the Lord must be exceedingly great and famous and glorious in all the lands.(F) Therefore, I will make provision for it.” So David made lavish preparations for it before his death.

Then he summoned his son Solomon and charged him to build a house for the Lord God of Israel. “My son,” David said to Solomon, “It was in my heart to build a house for the name of the Lord my God,(G) but the word of the Lord came to me: ‘You have shed much blood and waged great wars. You are not to build a house for my name because you have shed so much blood on the ground before me.(H) But a son will be born to you; he will be a man of rest. I will give him rest from all his surrounding enemies,(I) for his name will be Solomon,[a](J) and I will give peace and quiet to Israel during his reign.(K) 10 He is the one who will build a house for my name. He will be my son, and I will be his father. I will establish the throne of his kingdom over Israel forever.’(L)

11 “Now, my son, may the Lord be with you,(M) and may you succeed in building the house of the Lord your God, as he said about you. 12 Above all, may the Lord give you insight and understanding when he puts you in charge of Israel so that you may keep the law of the Lord your God.(N) 13 Then you will succeed if you carefully follow the statutes and ordinances the Lord commanded Moses for Israel.(O) Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid or discouraged.(P)

14 “Notice I have taken great pains to provide for the house of the Lord—3,775 tons of gold, 37,750 tons of silver,[b](Q) and bronze and iron that can’t be weighed because there is so much of it. I have also provided timber and stone, but you will need to add more to them. 15 You also have many workers: stonecutters, masons, carpenters, and people skilled in every kind of work 16 in gold, silver, bronze, and iron—beyond number. Now begin the work, and may the Lord be with you.”(R)

17 Then David ordered all the leaders of Israel to help his son Solomon: 18 “The Lord your God is with you, isn’t he? And hasn’t he given you rest on every side?(S) For he has handed the land’s inhabitants over to me, and the land has been subdued before the Lord and his people. 19 Now determine in your mind and heart to seek the Lord your God.(T) Get started building the Lord God’s sanctuary so that you may bring the ark of the Lord’s covenant and the holy articles of God to the temple that is to be built(U) for the name of the Lord.”(V)

The Divisions of the Levites

23 When David was old and full of days,(W) he installed his son Solomon as king over Israel.(X) Then he gathered all the leaders of Israel, the priests, and the Levites. The Levites thirty years old or more were counted;(Y) the total number of men was thirty-eight thousand by headcount.(Z) “Of these,” David said, “twenty-four thousand are to be in charge of the work on the Lord’s temple,(AA) six thousand are to be officers and judges,(AB) four thousand are to be gatekeepers, and four thousand are to praise the Lord with the instruments that I have made for worship.”(AC)

Then David divided them into divisions according to Levi’s sons:(AD) Gershom,[c] Kohath, and Merari.

The Gershonites: Ladan and Shimei.

Ladan’s sons: Jehiel was the first, then Zetham, and Joel—three.

Shimei’s sons: Shelomoth, Haziel, and Haran—three. Those were the heads of the families of Ladan.

10 Shimei’s sons: Jahath, Zizah,[d] Jeush, and Beriah. Those were Shimei’s sons—four. 11 Jahath was the first and Zizah was the second; however, Jeush and Beriah did not have many sons, so they became one family[e] and received a single assignment.

12 Kohath’s sons: Amram, Izhar, Hebron, and Uzziel—four.

13 Amram’s sons:(AE) Aaron and Moses.

Aaron, along with his descendants,(AF) was set apart forever to consecrate the most holy things, to burn incense in the presence of the Lord,(AG) to minister to him, and to pronounce blessings in his name forever. 14 As for Moses the man of God,(AH) his sons were named among the tribe of Levi.

15 Moses’s sons: Gershom and Eliezer.

16 Gershom’s sons: Shebuel was first.

17 Eliezer’s sons were Rehabiah, first; Eliezer did not have any other sons, but Rehabiah’s sons were very numerous.

18 Izhar’s sons: Shelomith was first.

19 Hebron’s sons: Jeriah was first, Amariah second, Jahaziel third, and Jekameam fourth.

20 Uzziel’s sons: Micah was first, and Isshiah second.

21 Merari’s sons: Mahli and Mushi.

Mahli’s sons: Eleazar and Kish.

22 Eleazar died having no sons, only daughters. Their cousins, the sons of Kish, married them.

23 Mushi’s sons: Mahli, Eder, and Jeremoth—three.

24 These were the descendants of Levi by their ancestral families[f]—the family heads, according to their registration by name in the headcount—twenty years old or more, who worked in the service of the Lord’s temple.(AI) 25 For David said, “The Lord God of Israel has given rest to his people,(AJ) and he has come to stay in Jerusalem forever. 26 Also, the Levites no longer need to carry the tabernacle or any of the equipment for its service”(AK) 27 for according to the last words of David, the Levites twenty years old or more were to be counted— 28 “but their duty will be to assist the descendants of Aaron with the service of the Lord’s temple, being responsible for the courts and the chambers, the purification of all the holy things, and the work of the service of God’s temple— 29 as well as the rows of the Bread of the Presence,(AL) the fine flour for the grain offering,(AM) the wafers of unleavened bread, the baking,[g](AN) the mixing,(AO) and all measurements of volume and length.(AP) 30 They are also to stand every morning to give thanks and praise to the Lord, and likewise in the evening. 31 Whenever burnt offerings are offered to the Lord on the Sabbaths, New Moons,(AQ) and appointed festivals, they are to offer them regularly in the Lord’s presence according to the number prescribed for them.(AR) 32 They are to carry out their responsibilities for the tent of meeting, for the holy place,(AS) and for their relatives, the descendants of Aaron,(AT) in the service of the Lord’s temple.”

Romans 3:9-31

The Whole World Guilty before God

What then? Are we any better off?[a] Not at all! For we have already charged that both Jews(A) and Greeks(B) are all under sin,[b](C) 10 as it is written:

There is no one righteous, not even one.
11 There is no one who understands;
there is no one who seeks God.
12 All have turned away;
all alike have become worthless.
There is no one who does what is good,
not even one.[c](D)
13 Their throat is an open grave;
they deceive with their tongues.[d](E)
Vipers’ venom is under their lips.[e](F)
14 Their mouth is full of cursing and bitterness.[f](G)
15 Their feet are swift to shed blood;
16 ruin and wretchedness are in their paths,
17 and the path of peace they have not known.[g](H)
18 There is no fear of God before their eyes.[h](I)

19 Now we know that whatever the law says,(J) it speaks to those who are subject to the law,[i](K) so that every mouth may be shut and the whole world may become subject to God’s judgment.[j](L) 20 For no one will be justified[k] in his sight by the works of the law,(M) because the knowledge of sin comes through the law.(N)

The Righteousness of God through Faith

21 But now, apart from the law, the righteousness of God has been revealed,(O) attested by the Law and the Prophets.[l](P) 22 The righteousness of God is through faith(Q) in Jesus Christ[m](R) to all who believe,(S) since there is no distinction.(T) 23 For all have sinned(U) and fall short of the[n] glory of God; 24 they are justified freely by his grace(V) through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus.(W) 25 God presented him as the mercy seat[o](X) by his blood,(Y) through faith, to demonstrate his righteousness, because in his restraint God(Z) passed over the sins previously committed.(AA) 26 God presented him to demonstrate his righteousness at the present time, so that he would be just and justify the one who has faith in Jesus.

Boasting Excluded

27 Where, then, is boasting?(AB) It is excluded. By what kind of law?[p](AC) By one of works? No, on the contrary, by a law[q] of faith. 28 For we conclude that a person is justified by faith apart from the works of the law.(AD) 29 Or is God the God of Jews only?(AE) Is he not the God of Gentiles too? Yes, of Gentiles too, 30 since there is one God(AF) who will justify the circumcised by faith(AG) and the uncircumcised through faith. 31 Do we then nullify the law through faith? Absolutely not!(AH) On the contrary, we uphold the law.(AI)

Psalm 12

Oppression by the Wicked

For the choir director: according to Sheminith.(A) A psalm of David.

Help, Lord, for no faithful one remains;
the loyal have disappeared from the human race.[a](B)
They lie to one another;
they speak with flattering lips and deceptive hearts.(C)
May the Lord cut off all flattering lips
and the tongue that speaks boastfully.(D)

“Because of the devastation of the needy
and the groaning of the poor,
I will now rise up,” says the Lord.
“I will provide safety for the one who longs for it.”(F)

1 Chronicles 19:1-21:30, Romans 2:25-3:8, Ps 11:1-7, Proverbs 19:10-12

Today is July 15th welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I am Brian it is wonderful to be here with you in the center of the week in the center of the month and moving forward together step-by-step day by day on the adventure of a lifetime that takes us through a year and through the Bible. And I am supremely grateful that we can be on this journey together. Right now, our journey has us in the book of First Chronicles in the Old Testament and in the letter to the Romans. And we’re just getting moved into it and we've…we’ve witnessed enough now to know that it speaks directly. It doesn’t have a problem, like it…it’s not going to be subtle, it’s gonna be direct and speak to us directly like yesterday when we were directly speaking about hypocrisy. And we’ll see what…what’s in store for us today. But first, we’re reading from the Christian Standard Bible this week. First Chronicles 19, 20, and 21.

Commentary:

Okay. So, in the in the…in the letter to the Romans we continue to watch Paul, essentially close loopholes…kind of. Yesterday it was hypocrisy, essentially, that we were talking about in the form of judgment, judging others for things that we are guilty of ourselves and for that matter judging at all because God is “the” judge and our judgments are usually pretty judgmental, right? Bring out the verses that say this is what you’re doing wrong and all this kind of stuff that we’ve seen over the years and probably done over the years or had done to us over the years. And yet Paul says that’s not how God is doing this. God is patient. God is kind. He is long-suffering. It is His patience and His kindness that brings you to repentance. So, a stark contrast to the way that we operate.

In our reading today Paul addresses some things that he had been accused of saying, which is essentially like God is the most high. He is the glorious one above all else and I, we humans, we are not. We are not God. We are lower than God, but we are also sinful people. And, so, since God is kind and patient and long-suffering. And since there is no way that we could ever achieve righteousness on our own then doesn’t our sin just exalt God higher? Like, doesn’t us being worse make Him a higher, which is this…essentially like this back door to being able to say I can do whatever I want with whoever I want, however I want, whenever I want. God’s wither not paying attention, or His kindness will lead me to repentance. And probably we can all get our heads around that stark of a concept or that big of an analogy, but we subtly do this kind of stuff because. Like, as long as we can keep it hidden as…as long as it’s not exposed we can keep these things around. We like to do these things in secret. And Paul is directly saying this is absolutely not okay. And, so, as we go into our day we should…we should give some thought to what we’re trying to justify, that we’re trying to make okay when it’s probably not, or for sure not and we know better, and we know it. God is the judge, and He is kind, and it is His kindness that leads us to repentance. And that is beautiful. And we can like think of that is like a get out of jail free card or something but He’s not doing this because of that. He’s doing this because the trajectory, the sin that we want to justify…the things that we want to justify that we know better than, their gonna judge us…we’re gonna be…we’re gonna ruin ourselves because sin only leads to death. God is just being patient and saying, you don’t have to go there, you can come to me that you might have life. And, so, let’s think about that today. What are we justifying that isn’t going anywhere and isn’t gonna help anything?

Prayer:

Holy Spirit, we need You. We invite You into that and the truth is, we’re already thinking of some of those things but if we spend some time, we can find like there’s all this going on subtly underneath the surface. It’s part of our culture. Like we live in a culture that has so much false in it that we’re just led to always keep secrets and keep things false when You have invited us into the light to be true, to be free. And, so, help us see the chains that are around us that we’re just coexisting with because it’s just always been this way. We’re just used to it when we could be free. Come Holy Spirit we pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Good morning DAB community my name is Naomi I’m calling from reading in the UK it’s my first time of calling for prayer in about a couple of years of listening because I’ve only just found the record button. So, you might be hearing from me again now. My prayer request this morning is for myself, for my business partner who is a deaf sign language user. We have a sign language interpreting service here in the UK for the deaf community and we’ve had two really bad experiences with two companies providing us with financial services both of whom breached their contract with us and both who have subsequently raised claims against us which we’ll be going to court to both defend and also to put our own counterclaim against them. I just want to pray first of all for the experience within the courts for my business partner and how inaccessible the courts really are and just the level of service which is provided. And I just pray Lord that You will go before us at the right access level in place and I thank You so far for what You’ve done and how have You’ve orchestrated things. I want to pray for Your justice and Your victory in these cases. And I pray also that You will use these cases to highlight the iniquity that’s currently present in financial services and also the housing service, housing market service, Lord where deaf and sick people or people with vulnerabilities fall through the cracks and are burned because of people not following the equivalency act. So, I just pray You’ll use as a case study to change law and to bring new equality into our system in the name of Jesus I ask Your victory Amen.

Good afternoon this is Renee calling from New York calling on July 12th and I’m just calling for a young lady who called in from Chicago regarding…she said she was the caregiver of someone going through dementia and expressed her anger and her lack of patience and frustration. And then she explained that it is her mom which makes all the sense of the world. And, you know, this is not just some random person this is your mom. So, all of those feelings and all of those emotions I just need you to know that it is coming from a place of hurt and you and I know just from the sound of your voice know that, you know, God He mends our heart and He’s gonna do that for you. He’s gonna give you a peace that surpasses all understanding and He’s with you and He’s with your mom. And I just need you to know that it’s OK. It’s OK to feel everything that you’re feeling because it’s your mom. And I’m just want you to know not like take away from how you are feeling and also know that it is a…a blessing that you can be there with her. She’s not in a home she’s with her daughter and she may have some good days and bad days and may not really know who you are at times but knowing that you’re there with her is a blessing. So, through all the frustrations I just want you to remember that. Also remember that we serve a mighty God who’s a keeper and He is a God of peace and love. So, I’m just praying for your peace, your love, your patience, and restoration and strength.

Hi this is Brian from Australia I’m calling for the very first time. I’m calling because I heard a prayer request form Margo a missionary in Liberia. Dear sister I want to encourage you that we are praying for you. Last week as a church we had a fasting and prayer retreat in which we had prayed for every nation by name, and we prayed for Liberia. We prayed that God would have mercy on that nation and that God would open the gates of that nation to their local churches and the missionaries working in that country to be able to preach the gospel so that the remnant might be saved. I want to…I want to encourage you sister. Just hang in there. You have the backing of a huge army that’s praying and lifting you up in this time of need. God bless you and your husband in your work for the Lord. Praise God.

Hello, my name is Megan I’ve called before. I’ve listened for about four years on and off now four maybe five and I just heard Micah with his prayer request about his marriage and I want you to know Micah and every other discouraged person in a relationship that God is in amongst you. God is in the middle of you, He’s surrounding you, He’s in the midst of you. And you reaching out to Him is so important for the future of your marriage. I’m gonna pray for you, all you and all marriages right now. Dear holy God thank You so much for this man Micah, for every person who is uplifting their marriage today holy God. Thank You, Jesus that You purposed them with an amazing companion. And holy God I thank You that You are the protector of our relationships. You’re the protector of our hearts Lord God and we present those hearts to You today Lord Jesus. I thank You that in Your word You are about unity, You are about peace, You are about love Lord Jesus. I thank You that You are gonna bring a supernatural peace, supernatural favor upon Micah, upon others. Lord Jesus Your name is gonna be made famous in this relationship Lord Jesus. Thank You, God that You are a healer, You heal emotions, You heal pain, You he’ll struggle, You heal insecurities holy God. And Lord Jesus we just uplift everybody to You today. In Your name. Amen.

This is OK with not being OK from Alberta. Margo from Liberia when I pray for you and bring you for before Jesus, I see him blowing a fresh cool wind on you. Your hair is gently blowing and it’s so refreshing for you and it’s full of the scent of flowers and trees and you just drink it in and it’s just giving you hope and energy and just renewing you. So, that’s my prayer for you. Vincent, praying for you. John who doesn’t know how to pray. Sometimes your heart is so full, and your burdens are so heavy. Just sit with Jesus in your mind, in your favorite place. I don’t know, maybe some people have to crawl into a dark closet and just sit with Him or go out somewhere peaceful. Just close your eyes and hand Him the big, awful backpack or garbage bag of stuff. See what He does with it. Watch Him. Just sit with Him. Let Him…I don’t know…He knows what to do with it. This is OK with not being OK. Make it a great day.

1 Chronicles 19-21

War with the Ammonites

19 Some time later,(A) King Nahash of the Ammonites died, and his son became king in his place. Then David said, “I’ll show kindness to Hanun son of Nahash, because his father showed kindness to me.”

So David sent messengers to console him concerning his father. However, when David’s emissaries arrived in the land of the Ammonites to console him, the Ammonite leaders said to Hanun, “Just because David has sent men with condolences for you, do you really believe he’s showing respect for your father? Instead, haven’t his emissaries come in order to scout out, overthrow, and spy on the land?” So Hanun took David’s emissaries, shaved them, cut their clothes in half at the hips, and sent them away.(B)

It was reported to David about his men, so he sent messengers to meet them, since the men were deeply humiliated. The king said, “Stay in Jericho until your beards grow back; then return.”

When the Ammonites realized(C) they had made themselves repulsive to David, Hanun and the Ammonites sent thirty-eight tons[a] of silver to hire chariots and horsemen from Aram-naharaim, Aram-maacah, and Zobah.(D) They hired thirty-two thousand chariots and the king of Maacah with his army, who came and camped near Medeba.(E) The Ammonites also came together from their cities for the battle.

David heard about this and sent Joab and all the elite troops. The Ammonites marched out and lined up in battle formation at the entrance of the city while the kings who had come were in the field by themselves. 10 When Joab saw that there was a battle line in front of him and another behind him, he chose some of Israel’s finest young men[b](F) and lined up in formation to engage the Arameans. 11 He placed the rest of the forces under the command of his brother Abishai. They lined up in formation to engage the Ammonites.

12 “If the Arameans are too strong for me,” Joab said, “then you’ll be my help. However, if the Ammonites are too strong for you, I’ll help you. 13 Be strong! Let’s prove ourselves strong for our people and for the cities of our God.(G) May the Lord’s will be done.”[c]

14 Joab and the people with him approached the Arameans for battle, and they fled before him. 15 When the Ammonites saw that the Arameans had fled, they likewise fled before Joab’s brother Abishai and entered the city. Then Joab went to Jerusalem.

16 When the Arameans realized that they had been defeated by Israel, they sent messengers to summon the Arameans who were beyond the Euphrates River. They were led by Shophach, the commander of Hadadezer’s army.

17 When this was reported to David, he gathered all Israel and crossed the Jordan. He came up to the Arameans and lined up against them. When David lined up to engage them, they fought against him. 18 But the Arameans fled before Israel, and David killed seven thousand of their charioteers and forty thousand foot soldiers. He also killed Shophach, commander of the army. 19 When Hadadezer’s subjects saw that they had been defeated by Israel, they made peace with David and became his subjects. After this, the Arameans were never willing to help the Ammonites again.

Capture of the City of Rabbah

20 In the spring[d] when kings march out to war,(H) Joab led the army and destroyed the Ammonites’ land. He came to Rabbah and besieged it, but David remained in Jerusalem.(I) Joab attacked Rabbah and demolished it. Then David took the crown from the head of their king,[e][f](J) and it was placed on David’s head. He found that the crown weighed seventy-five pounds[g] of gold, and there was a precious stone in it. In addition, David took away a large quantity of plunder from the city. He brought out the people who were in it and put them to work with saws,[h] iron picks, and axes.[i](K) David did the same to all the Ammonite cities. Then he and all his troops returned to Jerusalem.

The Philistine Giants

After this,(L) a war broke out with the Philistines at Gezer. At that time Sibbecai the Hushathite killed Sippai, a descendant of the Rephaim,[j](M) and the Philistines were subdued.

Once again there was a battle with the Philistines, and Elhanan son of Jair killed Lahmi the brother of Goliath of Gath. The shaft of his spear was like a weaver’s beam.(N)

There was still another battle at Gath where there was a man of extraordinary stature with six fingers on each hand and six toes on each foot—twenty-four in all. He, too, was descended from the giant.[k] When he taunted Israel, Jonathan son of David’s brother Shimei killed him.

These were the descendants of the giant in Gath killed by David and his soldiers.

David’s Military Census

21 Satan[l](O) rose up against Israel and incited David(P) to count the people of Israel. So David said to Joab and the commanders of the troops, “Go and count Israel from Beer-sheba to Dan and bring a report to me so I can know their number.”(Q)

Joab replied, “May the Lord multiply the number of his people a hundred times over!(R) My lord the king, aren’t they all my lord’s servants? Why does my lord want to do this? Why should he bring guilt on Israel?”

Yet the king’s order prevailed over Joab. So Joab left and traveled throughout Israel and then returned to Jerusalem. Joab gave the total troop registration to David. In all Israel there were one million one hundred thousand armed men[m] and in Judah itself four hundred seventy thousand armed men. But he did not include Levi and Benjamin in the count because the king’s command was detestable to him. This command was also evil in God’s sight, so he afflicted Israel.

David said to God, “I have sinned greatly because I have done this thing. Now, please take away your servant’s guilt, for I’ve been very foolish.”(S)

David’s Punishment

Then(T) the Lord instructed Gad,(U) David’s seer,(V) 10 “Go and say to David, ‘This is what the Lord says: I am offering you three choices. Choose one of them for yourself, and I will do it to you.’”

11 So Gad went to David and said to him, “This is what the Lord says: ‘Take your choice: 12 three years of famine, or three months of devastation by your foes with the sword of your enemy overtaking you, or three days of the sword of the Lord—a plague on the land, the angel of the Lord bringing destruction to the whole territory of Israel.’ Now decide what answer I should take back to the one who sent me.”

13 David answered Gad, “I’m in anguish. Please, let me fall into the Lord’s hands because his mercies are very great,(W) but don’t let me fall into human hands.”

14 So the Lord sent a plague on Israel, and seventy thousand Israelite men died. 15 Then God sent an angel to Jerusalem to destroy it, but when the angel was about to destroy the city,[n] the Lord looked, relented concerning the destruction,(X) and said to the angel who was destroying the people, “Enough, withdraw your hand now!” The angel of the Lord was then standing at the threshing floor of Ornan[o] the Jebusite.

16 When David looked up and saw the angel of the Lord standing between earth and heaven, with his drawn sword in his hand stretched out over Jerusalem, David and the elders, covered in sackcloth,(Y) fell facedown. 17 David said to God, “Wasn’t I the one who gave the order to count the people? I am the one who has sinned and acted very wickedly. But these sheep, what have they done? Lord my God, please let your hand be against me and against my father’s family, but don’t let the plague be against your people.”

David’s Altar

18 So the angel of the Lord ordered Gad(Z) to tell David to go and set up an altar to the Lord on the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite.(AA) 19 David went up at Gad’s command spoken in the name of the Lord.

20 Ornan was threshing wheat when he turned and saw the angel. His four sons, who were with him, hid. 21 David came to Ornan, and when Ornan looked and saw David, he left the threshing floor and bowed to David with his face to the ground.

22 Then David said to Ornan, “Give me this threshing-floor plot so that I may build an altar to the Lord on it. Give it to me for the full price, so the plague on the people may be stopped.”

23 Ornan said to David, “Take it! My lord the king may do whatever he wants.[p] See, I give the oxen for the burnt offerings, the threshing sledges for the wood, and the wheat for the grain offering—I give it all.”

24 King David answered Ornan, “No, I insist on paying the full price, for I will not take for the Lord what belongs to you or offer burnt offerings that cost me nothing.”

25 So David gave Ornan fifteen pounds of gold[q] for the plot. 26 He built an altar to the Lord there and offered burnt offerings and fellowship offerings. He called on the Lord, and he answered him with fire from heaven on the altar of burnt offering.(AB)

27 Then the Lord spoke to the angel, and he put his sword back into its sheath. 28 At that time, David offered sacrifices there when he saw that the Lord answered him at the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite. 29 The tabernacle of the Lord, which Moses made in the wilderness, and the altar of burnt offering were at the high place in Gibeon,(AC) 30 but David could not go before it to inquire of God, because he was terrified of the sword of the Lord’s angel.

Circumcision of the Heart

25 Circumcision benefits you if you observe the law, but if you are a lawbreaker, your circumcision has become uncircumcision.(A) 26 So if an uncircumcised(B) man keeps the law’s requirements,(C) will not his uncircumcision be counted as circumcision? 27 A man who is physically uncircumcised, but who keeps the law, will judge you(D) who are a lawbreaker in spite of having the letter of the law and circumcision. 28 For a person is not a Jew who is one outwardly,(E) and true circumcision is not something visible in the flesh. 29 On the contrary, a person is a Jew who is one inwardly,(F) and circumcision is of the heart—by the Spirit, not the letter.[a](G) That person’s praise is not from people but from God.(H)

Paul Answers an Objection

So what advantage does the Jew have? Or what is the benefit of circumcision? Considerable in every way. First, they were entrusted(I) with the very words of God.(J) What then? If some were unfaithful,(K) will their unfaithfulness nullify God’s faithfulness? Absolutely not!(L) Let God be true, even though everyone is a liar,(M) as it is written:

That you may be justified in your words
and triumph when you judge.[b](N)

But if our unrighteousness highlights[c] God’s righteousness,(O) what are we to say?(P) I am using a human argument:[d](Q) Is God unrighteous to inflict wrath? Absolutely not! Otherwise, how will God judge the world?(R) But if by my lie God’s truth abounds to his glory, why am I also still being judged as a sinner?(S) And why not say, just as some people slanderously claim we say, “Let us do what is evil so that good may come”?(T) Their condemnation is deserved!

1 Chronicles 16:37-18:17, Romans 2:1-24, Psalm 10:16-18, Proverbs 19:8-9

Today is the 14th day of July, welcome to the Daily Audio Bible, I’m Brian it’s great to be here with you today as we approach the middle of another one of the months that we get to share together, 12 of them in all as we move through the Bible in a year. It is a joy to be with you here now, as we take the next step forward together and that will lead us back into the book of 1 Chronicles today, chapter 16 verse 37 through 18 verse 17.

Commentary:

Okay, have you ever judged somebody or commented on someone’s behavior and you were guilty of doing the same thing at some point in your life, maybe even traipsing out versus to make your judgment, to make your commentary, even though you’re also guilty? That’s called, generally speaking, hypocritical right, hypocrisy and now that we’ve moved past all the pleasantries and greetings and kind of gotten into this Book of Romans, we see the tone of voice that Paul uses is very direct. Actually, we’ll find that in most of the letters, pretty direct conversation and Paul is talking about this sort of hypocrisy. And let’s face it, we’ve all judged people for things that we’ve done like we’re just, we’re a mess sometimes but let’s allow the letter to the Romans to just speak for itself. Therefore, every one of you who judges is without excuse for when you judge another you condemn yourself since you, the judge do the same things that we know that God’s judgment on those who do such things is based on the truth. Do you think any of you who judges those who do such things that do the same that you will escape God’s judgment? Yeah okay, so that’s as stark as it can be. And so, here we are to look in the mirror and face that. We put ourselves in the position of God and we like to judge on behalf of God and we like to bring out versus out to defend ourselves when often we’re being hypocritical because in some sort of way, we have the same things within us and we’re capable of doing the same things and we can’t stand that God wouldn’t judge those people. And so, we need to just people sometimes. I mean so often that’s what we get pulled into, we see something that we think is wrong or we think is unjust or that was really really interfering with our plans and goals and so we need God to judge those people’s wrong, move them out of the way and when I doesn’t happen them we get about the business of being the judge pretty quickly. Paul is saying here is that not gonna work because God’s not withholding judgment. Instead, he is bestowing the riches of his kindness and I’m quoting here the riches of his kindness, restraint and patience God’s kindness and again I am quoting this right out of the Bible, God’s kindness is intended to lead you to repentance. So, yeah Romans will continue to give us a theological underpinning and explain a lot to us theologically, but it also snaps things into place practically. What’s happening here though over, over the course of the days that we spend in Romans is that an argument is being laid out and so this whole thing is being set up and that’s what we’re reading here. What Paul’s saying today, for starters is that, we can judge all we want it doesn’t make a difference we’re not the judge. Our judgments don’t do anything like, in the eyes of God. God is God, God will do what God will do and we so often hypocritically step in His way and try to become the sovereign judge. And I know we all know people who are judgy right, and it’s going nowhere. And so, let’s carry that forward as Paul continues to layout the underpinnings of our faith.

Prayer:

So Father, we thank You thank You for this book, we thank You for Romans, we thank You for all that it that it has a how densely packed it is how much is there and we ask Holy Spirit that we would have eyes to see and ears to hear, as we’ve been praying that we would have understanding hearts that we would be transformed, that we would be changed, that Your kindness, Your patience, despite our judgments and hypocrisy, that Your kindness would lead us to repentance. We’re so often thinking fearfully about your wrath and that that’s supposed to lead us to repentance and yet what we’re finding is that You are kind and patient and leading us to repentance through restraint and that is such, that is in such stark contrast to how we normally are; we don’t offer kindness and restraint and patience. We all too often offer our judgment when it is kindness that leads us to repentance. Help this to sink in, help this to sink into the parched soil of these portions of our hearts giving us nourishment’s we pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.

Not to be weak yet, in my weakness I fall because my pride. And yet I have this community that’s so loving and so willing to pray for us so, I’m just gonna reach out and ask for prayer for me, my family, my children to help me to give up my pride and to seek God for help first and foremost. So, please if this community would pray for me as I pray when I listen for everyone else. I just felt weak to reach out but I know it’s what I really desperately need. So, thank you in advance for your prayers. I know this community. Thank you so much God bless.

This is Laquita from Vanita, Oklahoma. I wanted to pray for the gentlemen who had called in about his neighbor she has stage 4 cancer, she has two small children. And I just wanted to pray that the Lord would give you courage that…you’ve been on my mind ever since I heard you call in and I think the Lord wants to use you to go over there and minister the gospel to her and to tell her how much Jesus loves her and cares for her. And for you to lift up that family. And I’m just gonna pray. Lord, I just pray for this gentlemen Lord, that you would give him courage Lord. That You would take away any fear that he might have, that he might go over to this lady’s house and minister Your love, Your mercy, Your grace, Your compassion for her and her family Lord God. I just pray that You would open a door for him Father God that no man can shut Father and that You would just boldly come up on him and the Holy Spirit Lord that he would just be courageous to minister Your salvation to this lady. And I just thank you that You’re a faithful Lord, I thank You that You watch over Your word, Your performant. I thank You that You place this in his heart and Lord I just pray that You would fulfill Your word through him. In Jesus name. Amen.

Hi, this is Blessed by Jesus in Kansas City and it’s been a while but my heart was touched on the July 12th podcast by the lady from Chicago who was taking care of her mom who has dementia. I want you to know that you don’t walk that road alone and I am wanting to thank you on behalf of your mother for loving her and taking care of her when it’s not an easy job. I am praying along with you for your anger to be lessened, for you to find a joy again as you serve your mother in this ministry and I’m praying that God would send you just the right people at just the right time to walk beside you and to help you. I’m praying that you will accept that help and that you will have some times where you feel absolutely normal and refreshed. May you know that God loves you and God loves your mom and many, many people are lifting you up in prayer. Good bye.

The Daily Audio Bible Reading for Wednesday July 14, 2021 (NIV)

1 Chronicles 16:37-18:17

37 So David left Asaph and his relatives there before the ark of the Lord’s covenant to minister regularly(A) before the ark according to the daily requirements.(B) 38 He assigned Obed-edom(C) and his[a] sixty-eight relatives. Obed-edom son of Jeduthun and Hosah(D) were to be gatekeepers. 39 David left the priest Zadok and his fellow priests before the tabernacle of the Lord at the high place in Gibeon(E) 40 to offer burnt offerings regularly, morning and evening, to the Lord on the altar of burnt offerings and to do everything that was written in the law of the Lord, which he had commanded Israel to keep.(F) 41 With them were Heman,(G) Jeduthun, and the rest who were chosen and designated by name(H) to give thanks to the Lord—for his faithful love endures forever.(I) 42 Heman and Jeduthun had with them trumpets and cymbals to play and musical instruments of God.(J) Jeduthun’s sons were at the city gate.

43 Then all the people went home, and David returned home to bless his household.(K)

The Lord’s Covenant with David

17 When David(L) had settled into his palace, he said to the prophet Nathan, “Look! I am living in a cedar house while the ark of the Lord’s covenant is under tent curtains.”(M)

So Nathan told David, “Do all that is on your mind, for God is with you.”

But that night(N) the word of God came to Nathan: “Go to David my servant and say, ‘This is what the Lord says: You are not the one to build me a house to dwell in.(O) From the time I brought Israel out of Egypt until today I have not dwelt in a house; instead, I have moved from one tent site to another, and from one tabernacle location to another.[b](P) In all my journeys throughout Israel, have I ever spoken a word to even one of the judges of Israel, whom I commanded to shepherd my people, asking: Why haven’t you built me a house of cedar?’ (Q)

“So now this is what you are to say to my servant David: ‘This is what the Lord of Armies says: I took you from the pasture, from tending the flock, to be ruler over my people Israel.(R) I have been with you wherever you have gone, and I have destroyed all your enemies before you. I will make a name for you like that of the greatest on the earth. I will designate a place for my people Israel and plant them,(S) so that they may live there and not be disturbed again. Evildoers will not continue to oppress them as they have done 10 ever since the day I ordered judges to be over my people Israel. I will also subdue all your enemies.

“‘Furthermore, I declare to you that the Lord himself will build a house for you. 11 When your time comes to be with your ancestors, I will raise up after you your descendant, who is one of your own sons, and I will establish his kingdom. 12 He is the one who will build a house for me,(T) and I will establish his throne forever. 13 I will be his father, and he will be my son.(U) I will not remove my faithful love from him as I removed it from the one who was before you.(V) 14 I will appoint him over my house and my kingdom forever, and his throne will be established forever.’”(W)

15 Nathan reported all these words and this entire vision to David.

David’s Prayer of Thanksgiving

16 Then(X) King David went in, sat in the Lord’s presence, and said,

Who am I, Lord God, and what is my house that you have brought me this far? 17 This was a little thing to you,[c] God, for you have spoken about your servant’s house in the distant future. You regard me as a man of distinction,[d] Lord God. 18 What more can David say to you for honoring your servant? You know your servant. 19 Lord, you have done this whole great thing, making known all these great promises for the sake of your servant and according to your will.(Y) 20 Lord, there is no one like you, and there is no God besides you, as all we have heard confirms. 21 And who is like your people Israel? God, you came to one nation on earth to redeem a people for yourself, to make a name for yourself through great and awesome works by driving out nations before your people you redeemed from Egypt.(Z) 22 You made your people Israel your own people forever, and you, Lord, have become their God.(AA)

23 Now, Lord, let the word that you have spoken concerning your servant and his house be confirmed forever, and do as you have promised. 24 Let your name be confirmed and magnified forever in the saying, “The Lord of Armies, the God of Israel, is God over Israel.” May the house of your servant David be established before you. 25 Since you, my God, have revealed to[e](AB) your servant that you will build him a house, your servant has found courage to pray in your presence. 26 Lord, you indeed are God, and you have promised this good thing to your servant. 27 So now, you have been pleased to bless your servant’s house that it may continue before you forever. For you, Lord, have blessed it, and it is blessed forever.

David’s Military Campaigns

18 After this,(AC) David defeated the Philistines, subdued them, and took Gath and its surrounding villages from Philistine control. He also defeated the Moabites, and they became David’s subjects and brought tribute.

David also defeated King Hadadezer of Zobah at Hamath when he went to establish his control at the Euphrates River. David captured one thousand chariots, seven thousand horsemen, and twenty thousand foot soldiers from him, hamstrung all the horses, and kept a hundred chariots.[f]

When the Arameans of Damascus came to assist King Hadadezer of Zobah,(AD) David struck down twenty-two thousand Aramean men. Then he placed garrisons[g](AE) in Aram of Damascus, and the Arameans became David’s subjects and brought tribute. The Lord made David victorious wherever he went.

David took the gold shields carried by Hadadezer’s officers and brought them to Jerusalem. From Tibhath and Cun, Hadadezer’s cities, David also took huge quantities of bronze, from which Solomon made the bronze basin,[h] the pillars, and the bronze articles.(AF)

When King Tou of Hamath heard that David had defeated the entire army of King Hadadezer of Zobah, 10 he sent his son Hadoram to King David to greet him and to congratulate him because David had fought against Hadadezer and defeated him, for Tou and Hadadezer had fought many wars. Hadoram brought all kinds of gold, silver, and bronze items. 11 King David also dedicated these to the Lord, along with the silver and gold he had carried off from all the nations—from Edom, Moab, the Ammonites, the Philistines, and the Amalekites.

12 Abishai son of Zeruiah struck down eighteen thousand Edomites in the Salt Valley. 13 He put garrisons in Edom, and all the Edomites were subject to David. The Lord made David victorious wherever he went.

14 So David reigned over all Israel,(AG) administering justice and righteousness for all his people.

15 Joab(AH) son of Zeruiah was over the army;

Jehoshaphat son of Ahilud was court historian;

16 Zadok son of Ahitub and Ahimelech[i](AI) son of Abiathar were priests;

Shavsha was court secretary;

17 Benaiah son of Jehoiada(AJ) was over the Cherethites and the Pelethites;

and David’s sons were the chief officials at the king’s side.

God’s Righteous Judgment

Therefore, every one of you[a](A) who judges is without excuse.(B) For when you judge another,(C) you condemn yourself, since you, the judge, do the same things. Now we know that God’s judgment on those who do such things is based on the truth. Do you think—anyone of you who judges those who do such things yet do the same—that you will escape God’s judgment? Or do you despise the riches of his kindness,(D) restraint,(E) and patience,(F) not recognizing[b] that God’s kindness(G) is intended to lead you to repentance? Because of your hardened and unrepentant heart you are storing up wrath(H) for yourself in the day of wrath,(I) when God’s righteous judgment is revealed. He will repay each one according to his works:[c](J) eternal life(K) to those who by persistence in doing good(L) seek glory, honor,(M) and immortality;(N) but wrath and anger to those who are self-seeking(O) and disobey the truth(P) while obeying unrighteousness. There will be affliction and distress(Q) for every human being who does evil, first to the Jew, and also to the Greek;(R) 10 but glory, honor, and peace for everyone who does what is good, first to the Jew, and also to the Greek. 11 For there is no favoritism with God.(S)

12 For all who sin without the law(T) will also perish without the law, and all who sin under[d] the law will be judged by the law. 13 For the hearers of the law(U) are not righteous before God, but the doers of the law will be justified.[e] 14 So, when Gentiles, who do not by nature have the law,(V) do[f] what the law demands, they are a law to themselves even though they do not have the law. 15 They show that the work of the law[g] is written on their hearts.(W) Their consciences confirm this. Their competing thoughts either accuse or even excuse them[h] 16 on the day when God judges(X) what people have kept secret, according to my gospel through Christ Jesus.(Y)

Jewish Violation of the Law

17 Now if[i] you call yourself a Jew, and rely on the law,(Z) and boast in God, 18 and know his will, and approve the things that are superior,(AA) being instructed from the law, 19 and if you are convinced that you are a guide for the blind, a light to those in darkness, 20 an instructor of the ignorant, a teacher of the immature, having the embodiment of knowledge and truth(AB) in the law— 21 you then, who teach another,(AC) don’t you teach yourself? You who preach, “You must not steal”—do you steal? 22 You who say, “You must not commit adultery”—do you commit adultery? You who detest idols, do you rob temples?(AD) 23 You who boast in the law,(AE) do you dishonor God by breaking the law?[j] 24 For, as it is written: The name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you.[k](AF)

1 Chronicles 15:1-16:36, Romans 1:18-32, Psalms 10:1-15, Proverbs 19:6-7

Today is the 13th day of July welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I’m Brian it’s great to be here with you today. Every day it’s good to be here around the Global Campfire together as we continue to move forward on our journey. We’re reading from the Christian Standard Bible this week and we’re still working our way through the book of first Chronicles in the Old Testament and we are just brand-new getting into the book of Romans in the New Testament. So, First Chronicles chapter 15 verse 1 through 16 verse 36 today.

Commentary:

Okay. So, we’re just getting into the book of Romans and we’ll have plenty to talk about, not only through Romans but through all of Paul’s letters. Romans is very, very densely packed with theology. So, it’s like, yeah, you got a kinda really pay attention on some of these things to…to these kind of lengthy, complex sentences. But in effect we began a letter with greetings and then Paul is starting to lay out a case for faith, that it is faith in Jesus that justifies us before God. And, so, as we get into today’s reading he’s just sort of going back to the beginning and laying it out, like laying out that God has always desired to be known, and that, for that matter nobody has an excuse because God is evident…like the evidence of God’s attributes can be seen every blink of every eye. All you have to do is look around you at creation and see the evidence of God’s existence even though He can’t be seen, and no one has ever seen Him…seen Him. So, Paul explains it this way and…and I’m just quoting from Romans. “For His invisible attributes, that is, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen since the creation of the world, being understood through what He has made. As a result, people are without excuse.” So, Paul is beginning to build a case for faith - you can’t see God, but you can see evidence of God and faith is the thing that lets you see what you cannot see.” But he’s also laying out an argument right up front here that everybody can look around and see evidence of God, and it has always been this way. And yet people were blinded and fell into all kinds of sinful things that have kind of led us to the place that we are. And in that slide, in that spiral downward while still trying to look for and even control God we made our own gods. We started worshiping other things are worshiping each other. And, so, humanity began to experience things that it wasn’t designed to experience, nor were they ever intended by God. Well…we had to have it our way. And isn’t that the story? Isn’t that the story? And yet as we will see laid out clearly, God has His own story to tell and we’re a part of that story, not the other way around. And, so, God has been relentlessly pursuing us. And even though we want we want to have our own way there is always a way back to Him. It won’t be our way. It’ll be His way. But there is a way, and that way can be found through faith.

Prayer:

Father, we thank you for your word. And as we continue to move into Romans, Holy Spirit come, give us ears to hear, eyes to see, an understanding mind and heart. Apply these things to our lives so that they can direct our steps, so that they can transform our motives, so that they can transform our hearts. Come Holy Spirit into all this we ask in the name of Jesus. Amen.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Good morning DABbber family this is la Chula calling from Los Angeles CA and I just want to thank my DAB community for their prayers for standing with me. Five months ago, this day my daughter was abandoned by her husband leaving her eight weeks pregnant and with a special needs child. And what felt like the end of the world was the beginning of something new and beautiful. She’s on a very beautiful journey and to finding her identity in Christ. And I just want to thank pastor Brian and Jill and…and all the DAB community for standing with me at such a time. I want to wish her a beautiful birthday as well because today…yesterday was her 28th birthday and I just wanted to say happy birthday to my daughter. She has blessed me beyond measure. I can’t believe that God has crowned me with her as my daughter and now is going to give me a little Princess in September. And although, you know, we’re still walking together with uncertainty at times, God is never wrong and He’s always faithful. So, God is never wrong and He’s always faithful…

Hey my sweet DAB fam this is Kingdom Seeker Daniel. Family I could really use your prayers. As LOV and I were enroute to and outdoor facility for kids LOV got a phone call that her son passed away this morning on July 10th. And, so, this is really a shocker and we turned around and were getting ready to head back but then we asked the grandsons if they wanted to, you know, go somewhere anyway. It was kind of heavy for everybody, but they decided they wanted to go. So, with heavy hearts we are…we are here trying to just process through it all. So, will you please be in prayer for my dear bride LOV and her daughters Tonya and Nicole and their dad Bill senior. I’m a bit perplexed because I was planning on flying out next Monday the 19th to visit with D2 for his birthday because that's…that’s the actually day for his birthday and the only day for visitation. So, I’m not exactly sure what to do at this point, whether I should go…I could go…I don't…I don’t want to necessarily leave my bride. So, I don’t know family. So, will you guys please be in prayer for us, and specifically for LOV. Love you guys so much.

Hey DAB…DAB community this is your girl Trelravenell by way of the DMV area, your marriage coach and I wanted to lift up prayers to the team, lifting up prayers for some of our individuals. Praying for Jacob tumors on his spinal cord. He had called in. I just believe that God is going to heal him. Anybody that’s having any spinal cord issues, any issues of them being able to function, muscular issues, bone issues and I’m praying that God is going to realign their…their bodies right now in the name of Jesus. I’m praying for those that are suffering from infertility. I’m praying for God to restore the womb, that He makes a way out of no way for these individuals to have the…a child, for them to bring a child into this world. We know that there are several things that can…can happen by way of technology and other means and I’m just believing God is going to open that door. Praying for Jeannie who’s having car issues and just constant life challenges and struggles. It seems like she’s going through adversity after adversity and I’m just praying that God…that she’s able to cast her cares on the Lord, that He cares for her, that God will just shower down His blessings on her, shower down His piece on her and every adversity and challenge that she’s facing right now that she will come out on top, and she will have the victory. Praying for Jeanette who has had…who is…who is a diabetic and going through dialysis. She had a tooth pulled and some other things and she’s only in her 40s and it seems like she’s having a lot of health issues. I pray that she is healed for by the stripes of Jesus you are healed even from diabetes, dialysis, any issues of the kidney any of the issues of the liver. I know God can heal and I pray that He gives you the wisdom on how to care for your body and the things that you need to do so you can walk in total healing and manifestation. Praying for Dean senior who had four liters of fluid off of his liver and waiting a liver transplant. I’m believing he will get it and it will be good in Jesus’ name.

Hey DAB family this is Jasmine calling from Virginia, and I’m actually called up here before but today I just wanted to thank Renzo from Florida for just calling in and praying for others. It really just motivates me to like hear someone that’s like in my age group just motivating and encouraging people because I’m not used to seeing that. So, thank you for that. And I just wanted to pray for everyone. So, Lord Heavenly Father I just thank you for today, thank you for waking us up today, hearing this podcast so that we could just be encouraged and motivated to just draw closer to Lord. I pray that you protect each and every one of us Lord. I pray that you give us peace and just comfort so that we could walk into today or tomorrow with pride Lord. And I just ask that you forgive us for all of our sins. I pray that you cleanse us from anything and that you just blind us from all the things Satan lies upon us in the name of Jesus I pray Amen.

I went to church the other night for the first time in many many weeks
and I found out that it’s true his spirit still speaks
peace and love and things to come
God loves us all not just some
reluctantly I gave him space
lovingly abundantly he gives me back grace
he opens the locks within my heart
and he guarantees a brand new start
why do I still try so hard to turn away
why does he still keep loving me more with each passing day
why does he keep on letting me do things my own stupid way
even when I buck he still says it’s OK
God is God and he’s just that way
maker of kings
above all things
knowing today what tomorrow brings
counter of raindrops keeper of tears
he knew before time was the sum of my years
the core of my fears
the what when where and everything about all my careers
and yet still I’m reluctant to do things his way
I’m hardheaded and stubborn what more can I say
but I do know I feel him and I feel him real strong
it doesn’t take a genius to see that I was wrong
so I’m acknowledging his greatness and I’m acknowledging my sin
and I’m praying very humbly for his spirit to come in
and redirect my thinking and guide all my steps
soften the hardness of my heart
it’s not much but it’s what he expects
I recommit myself to you body mind and spirit
the other path will still be there but I’m not trying to hear it
it won’t be easy and it won’t be smooth
but a long ways to go and a whole lot to prove
prove to my children my family and friends
to God and myself before this life ends
so thank you my Lord for bringing me back to church
since it took that to bring me back to you
help me dear Lord to stay firm on this course
and with you and everything I do

1 Chronicles 15:1-16:36

The Ark Comes to Jerusalem

15 David built houses for himself in the city of David, and he prepared a place for the ark of God and pitched a tent for it.(A) Then David said, “No one but the Levites may carry the ark of God, because the Lord has chosen them to carry the ark of the Lord and to minister before him forever.”(B)

David assembled all Israel at Jerusalem(C) to bring the ark of the Lord to the place he had prepared for it.(D) Then he gathered together the descendants of Aaron and the Levites:

From the Kohathites, Uriel the leader and 120 of his relatives; from the Merarites, Asaiah the leader and 220 of his relatives; from the Gershomites,[a] Joel the leader and 130 of his relatives; from the Elizaphanites, Shemaiah the leader and 200 of his relatives; from the Hebronites, Eliel the leader and 80 of his relatives; 10 from the Uzzielites, Amminadab the leader and 112 of his relatives.

11 David summoned the priests Zadok(E) and Abiathar(F) and the Levites Uriel, Asaiah, Joel, Shemaiah, Eliel, and Amminadab. 12 He said to them, “You are the heads of the Levite families. You and your relatives must consecrate yourselves(G) so that you may bring the ark of the Lord God of Israel to the place I have prepared for it.(H) 13 For the Lord our God burst out in anger against us because you Levites were not with us the first time, for we didn’t inquire of him about the proper procedures.”(I) 14 So the priests and the Levites consecrated themselves to bring up the ark of the Lord God of Israel. 15 Then the Levites carried the ark of God the way Moses had commanded according to the word of the Lord: on their shoulders with the poles.(J)

16 Then David told the leaders of the Levites to appoint their relatives as singers and to have them raise their voices with joy accompanied by musical instruments—harps, lyres, and cymbals.(K) 17 So the Levites appointed Heman son of Joel; from his relatives, Asaph son of Berechiah; and from their relatives the Merarites, Ethan son of Kushaiah. 18 With them were their relatives second in rank: Zechariah, Jaaziel,[b] Shemiramoth, Jehiel, Unni, Eliab, Benaiah, Maaseiah, Mattithiah, Eliphelehu, Mikneiah, and the gatekeepers Obed-edom and Jeiel. 19 The singers Heman, Asaph, and Ethan were to sound the bronze cymbals; 20 Zechariah, Aziel, Shemiramoth, Jehiel, Unni, Eliab, Maaseiah, and Benaiah were to play harps according to Alamoth[c] 21 and Mattithiah, Eliphelehu, Mikneiah, Obed-edom, Jeiel, and Azaziah were to lead the music with lyres according to the Sheminith. 22 Chenaniah, the leader of the Levites in music, was to direct the music because he was skillful. 23 Berechiah and Elkanah were to be gatekeepers for the ark. 24 The priests, Shebaniah, Joshaphat, Nethanel, Amasai, Zechariah, Benaiah, and Eliezer, were to blow trumpets(L) before the ark of God. Obed-edom and Jehiah were also to be gatekeepers for the ark.

25 David,(M) the elders of Israel, and the commanders of thousands went with rejoicing to bring the ark of the covenant of the Lord from the house of Obed-edom.(N) 26 Because God helped the Levites who were carrying the ark of the covenant of the Lord, with God’s help, they sacrificed seven bulls and seven rams.(O)

27 Now David was dressed in a robe of fine linen, as were all the Levites who were carrying the ark, as well as the singers and Chenaniah, the music leader of the singers. David also wore a linen ephod. 28 So all Israel brought up the ark of the covenant of the Lord with shouts, the sound of the ram’s horn, trumpets, and cymbals, and the playing of harps and lyres. 29 As the ark of the covenant of the Lord was entering the city of David, Saul’s daughter Michal looked down from the window and saw King David leaping[d] and dancing, and she despised him in her heart.

16 They(P) brought the ark of God and placed it inside the tent David had pitched for it.(Q) Then they offered burnt offerings and fellowship offerings in God’s presence. When David had finished offering the burnt offerings and the fellowship offerings, he blessed the people in the name of the Lord. Then he distributed to each and every Israelite, both men and women, a loaf of bread, a date cake, and a raisin cake.

David appointed some of the Levites to be ministers before the ark of the Lord, to celebrate the Lord God of Israel, and to give thanks and praise to him. Asaph was the chief and Zechariah was second to him. Jeiel, Shemiramoth, Jehiel, Mattithiah, Eliab, Benaiah, Obed-edom, and Jeiel played the harps and lyres, while Asaph sounded the cymbals and the priests Benaiah and Jahaziel blew the trumpets regularly before the ark of the covenant of God.

David’s Psalm of Thanksgiving

On that day David decreed for the first time that thanks be given to the Lord by Asaph and his relatives:

Give thanks(R) to the Lord; call on his name;
proclaim his deeds among the peoples.(S)
Sing to him; sing praise to him;
tell about all his wondrous works!
10 Boast in his holy name;
let the hearts of those who seek the Lord rejoice.
11 Seek the Lord and his strength;
seek his face always.(T)
12 Remember the wondrous works he has done,(U)
his wonders, and the judgments he has pronounced,[e](V)
13 you offspring of Israel his servant,
Jacob’s descendants—his chosen ones.

14 He is the Lord our God;
his judgments govern the whole earth.(W)
15 Remember his covenant forever—
the promise he ordained for a thousand generations,
16 the covenant he made with Abraham,
swore[f] to Isaac,(X)
17 and confirmed to Jacob as a decree,
and to Israel as a permanent covenant:(Y)
18 “I will give the land of Canaan to you
as your inherited portion.”(Z)

19 When they[g] were few in number,
very few indeed,(AA) and resident aliens in Canaan
20 wandering from nation to nation
and from one kingdom to another,
21 he allowed no one to oppress them;
he rebuked kings on their behalf:(AB)
22 “Do not touch my anointed ones
or harm my prophets.”(AC)

23 Let the whole earth sing(AD) to the Lord.
Proclaim his salvation from day to day.
24 Declare his glory among the nations,
his wondrous works among all peoples.

25 For the Lord is great and highly praised;(AE)
he is feared above all gods.(AF)
26 For all the gods of the peoples are worthless idols,(AG)
but the Lord made the heavens.(AH)
27 Splendor and majesty are before him;
strength and joy are in his place.
28 Ascribe to the Lord, families of the peoples,
ascribe to the Lord glory and strength.
29 Ascribe to the Lord the glory of his name;
bring an offering and come before him.
Worship the Lord in the splendor of his holiness;(AI)
30 let the whole earth tremble(AJ) before him.
The world is firmly established;
it cannot be shaken.
31 Let the heavens be glad and the earth rejoice,(AK)
and let them say among the nations, “The Lord reigns!”
32 Let the sea and all that fills it resound;
let the fields and everything in them exult.(AL)
33 Then the trees of the forest will shout for joy before the Lord,
for he is coming to judge the earth.

34 Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good;
his faithful love endures forever.(AM)
35 And say,(AN) “Save us, God of our salvation;
gather us and rescue us from the nations
so that we may give thanks to your holy name
and rejoice in your praise.
36 Blessed be the Lord God of Israel(AO)
from everlasting to everlasting.”

Then all the people said, “Amen” and “Praise the Lord.”

Romans 1:18-32

The Guilt of the Gentile World

18 For God’s wrath(A) is revealed from heaven against all godlessness and unrighteousness of people who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth,(B) 19 since what can be known[a] about God is evident among them,(C) because God has shown it to them. 20 For his invisible attributes, that is, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen since the creation of the world,(D) being understood through what he has made.(E) As a result, people are without excuse. 21 For though they knew God, they did not glorify him as God or show gratitude. Instead, their thinking became worthless, and their senseless hearts were darkened.(F) 22 Claiming to be wise, they became fools(G) 23 and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man, birds, four-footed animals, and reptiles.(H)

24 Therefore God delivered them over in the desires of their hearts(I) to sexual impurity, so that their bodies were degraded among themselves. 25 They exchanged the truth of God for a lie,(J) and worshiped and served what has been created instead of the Creator, who is praised forever.(K) Amen.

From Idolatry to Depravity

26 For this reason God delivered them over to disgraceful passions.(L) Their women[b] exchanged natural sexual relations[c] for unnatural ones. 27 The men[d] in the same way also left natural relations with women and were inflamed in their lust for one another. Men committed shameless acts with men(M) and received in their own persons[e] the appropriate penalty of their error.

28 And because they did not think it worthwhile to acknowledge God, God delivered them over to a corrupt mind so that they do what is not right. 29 They are filled with all unrighteousness,[f] evil, greed, and wickedness. They are full of envy, murder, quarrels, deceit, and malice. They are gossips,(N) 30 slanderers, God-haters, arrogant, proud, boastful,(O) inventors of evil, disobedient to parents,(P) 31 senseless, untrustworthy, unloving,[g](Q) and unmerciful. 32 Although they know God’s just sentence—that those who practice such things deserve to die[h](R)—they not only do them, but even applaud[i](S) others who practice them.

Psalm 10:1-15

Psalm 10

Need for God’s Justice

Lord,[a][b] why do you stand so far away?(A)
Why do you hide in times of trouble?(B)
In arrogance the wicked relentlessly pursue their victims;
let them be caught in the schemes they have devised.(C)

For the wicked one boasts about his own cravings;(D)
the one who is greedy curses[c] and despises the Lord.(E)
In all his scheming,
the wicked person arrogantly thinks,[d]
“There’s no accountability,
since there’s no God.”(F)
His ways are always secure;[e]
your lofty judgments have no effect on him;[f]
he scoffs at all his adversaries.(G)
He says to himself, “I will never be moved—
from generation to generation I will be without calamity.”(H)
Cursing, deceit, and violence fill his mouth;
trouble and malice are under his tongue.(I)
He waits in ambush near settlements;(J)
he kills the innocent in secret places.
His eyes are on the lookout for the helpless;(K)
he lurks in secret like a lion in a thicket.
He lurks in order to seize a victim;
he seizes a victim and drags him in his net.
10 So he is oppressed and beaten down;
helpless people fall because of the wicked one’s strength.(L)
11 He says to himself, “God has forgotten;
he hides his face and will never see.”(M)

12 Rise up, Lord God! Lift up your hand.(N)
Do not forget the oppressed.(O)
13 Why has the wicked person despised God?
He says to himself, “You will not demand an account.”(P)
14 But you yourself have seen trouble and grief,
observing it in order to take the matter into your hands.(Q)
The helpless one entrusts himself to you;
you are a helper of the fatherless.(R)
15 Break the arm of the wicked, evil person,(S)
until you look for his wickedness,
but it can’t be found.(T)
