1 Samuel 22:1-23:29, John 10:1-21, Psalm 115:1-18, Proverbs 15:18-19

Today is the 18th day of May welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I am Brian it is always a privilege, it’s always an honor for us to get together like this and have the accessibility to the Scriptures like we do and read them fresh and listen to what God is saying through the…the Bible. It is a joy every day to take the next step forward together. And, so, let’s do that. We’re reading from the English Standard Version this week. We’re still working our way through first book of Samuel. We’re pretty clear now in how David and Saul’s lives our intertwined. King Saul wants David to be dead and David is running for his life and trying to find a way to survive. And, so, let’s pick up the story. 1 Samuel, chapters 22 and 23 today.

Commentary:

Okay. So, we passed by a very famous portion of Scripture in the gospel of John today. And, so, we’ll talk about it and its context but let’s start by just zooming in on a couple of key words here, “steal, kill, destroy.” So, if you are being said stolen from than something that belongs to you in your possession has been taken by someone who has no right. Kill, we can pretty much understand. Although for something to be killed doesn’t necessarily mean you’re dead. Things can die within us - dreams, hopes, desires. And then destroy is to render something that was perfectly usable, completely broken and worthless. Actually, if you want to get technical here, to destroy something is and its existence. So, like if…if your house burns down may have insurance and everything like that to rebuild another one. But the one you did live in was destroyed, its existence as it was, has ended. Steal, kill, destroy. If we look at our lives just trying to live, right, just trying to make it through another week, just trying to do our very, very best we can see that these themes are around us. Sometimes it feels very much like we’re being stolen from and its nothing we can put our fingers on. It’s not physical, it’s “something is being taken.” Sometimes it feels like we can be experiencing theft, stealing, killing, and destroying like this…this is…this is happening. This is happening to me and I don’t know how to stop it. Jesus said, “the thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.” In other words, the opposite of what the thief’s ambitions are. So, doesn’t that essentially describe life among humanity. That one verse, very famous, John 10:10, very famous verse, but that really encapsulates just about everything doesn’t it? And, so, how is it that we find this concise statement from the lips of Jesus? What’s He talking about? Because John 10:10, this is a quotable verse. This gets said every week. This gets that all of the time, but it’s part of a conversation just like John 3:16 is a part of a conversation when Jesus says, “for God so loved the world.” He’s in the middle of a conversation with a man named Nicodemus under the cover of night. So, this famous verse, John 10:10, “the thief comes only to steal, kill, and destroy” is part of a…of a conversation that Jesus is having and He’s discussing shepherding. He…He’s using the analogy of…of shepherding, that a flock of sheep they…they may go in and stay in a pen with many other flocks of sheep. It was a custom of the shepherds to keep the sheep together and guard them all in one place during the night, so that a predator or thief couldn’t come and take them. And then when morning comes and it’s time to go out to…out to pasture then each shepherd comes and calls its flock, and the sheep follow their shepherd because they know His voice. So, if you’re a shepherd and you got 10 sheep and your sheep are in a pen with 100 sheep and they’re all bleeding and they’re all moving around but you come, and you call your 10 sheep that you spend your life with, that you love them and you know them by name and you would lay her life down to protect them and you call them, they hear you, they trust you, they know you. Out of the many they come running to their shepherd so that they can go out to pasture. And Jesus in this discussion is basically saying that’s the way of it. Anybody who doesn’t go in the sheep gate and call his sheep how isn’t the shepherd. The one trying to get over the wall into the pen isn’t the shepherd. Anyone who’s not just going in the front door, who’s trying to get in some other way isn’t the shepherd. They’re, a thief and a robber according to Jesus, but the one who just walks into the front door and calls their flock, and the sheep hear their shepherd’s voice, and they follow the shepherd to pasture, that’s the true shepherd. Speaking of those sheep and quoting Jesus, “a stranger they will not follow. They will flee from him, for they do not know the voice of strangers.” So, this gives us some context to what Jesus is talking about. And, so, now putting our famous verse in context, Jesus said, “I am the door. If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved and will go in and out and find pasture. The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly. I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down His life for the sheep. I am the good shepherd. I know My own and My own know Me just as the Father knows Me and I know the Father. And I lay down My life for the sheep.” Okay. So, it’s not too much of a stretch for us to understand the metaphor here, that we are the sheep, and He is the good shepherd. But what we should probably understand is that if we are His sheep, we know His voice, which means that we can hear His voice, which means that He’s using His voice, which means that if it’s not His voice and it’s somebody else’s voice saying that He’s the shepherd we know better because we know the voice of our shepherd and we shy away from that interloper like sheep do. I mean my neighbor has sheep and a flock and, you know, they walk around and they…they bleat and do sheep things and if I walk over by the fence, and they are very observant creatures, if I walk over toward them, they’re going to stop what they’re doing and pay very close attention to what I’m doing. And if I continue and I say, “hi guys. Good morning beautiful sheep.” Even though I’m being nice, they don’t know my voice. They get skittish. They want to go somewhere where they feel more safe. A flock of sheep feels safe with its shepherd. They trust the shepherd. So, if we didn’t already know this, there are competing voices out there that want things from us, whether they want our money or they want our allegiance or they want our vote or they want our voice. And often enough we can find ourselves following when we should slow down. We’ve been learning quite a bit about how we got…it doesn’t have to be a major slowdown, it’s just gotta be we are intentional about not reacting. There are forces out there that want to steal, kill, and destroy. And that’s a pretty sure bet if we’ve lost the voice of our Shepherd and have gotten isolated. If we’ll think this through. Like, if we’ll actually take some time to meditate on this today many things start making sense and it should give us a profound desire to hear the voice of the Shepherd and to know the voice of the Shepherd. And we might think, “I know…I do…I do…I’ve walked with the Lord for years. And, so, I know what that feels like within me when God is prompting or leading or speaking.” And others maybe like, “I just don’t even know where to start.” Simple enough way to start is to simply become aware of your senses, which is not to say like, “oh, just follow your feelings around.” But when something feels off…isn’t it weird how we can be in a situation that looks normal but something’s not right, something’s not right. We don’t know what it is but something’s not right. And, so, we have this kind of intuition. Sometimes we can figure it out sometimes we can’t. If we’re slowed down enough we can ask ourselves, “is this prompting…is this sense…like if…if I’m gonna go forward with this…this path that I'm…that I’m deciding, will this lead me into life abundant? Is my shepherd there? Like, is this gonna lead me deeper into Jesus or is this about me and my own gratification in some sort of way?” If we just get basic, then we can build a foundation and begin to mature. We can simply ask, “can…can this be done in the name of Jesus? Does this bring love? Will I be known by my love that I’m a disciple in this situation? We don’t have to be rocket scientists or have a PhD in theology. My neighbor’s sheep don’t. I don’t even know if they know their sheep to be honest, but I do know that they know the voice of their shepherd, which in this particular story from Jesus seems to be the goal. So, it’s an attainable goal. And if we learn the voice of our shepherd and follow the voice of our shepherd into pasture, well that might change our whole life. And, so, let’s meditate upon that today and move in that direction today because that will lead us deeper and closer to Jesus today.

Prayer:

Holy Spirit come. We need to know Your voice. We need to know it clearly. And we confess that so often we’re confused about it, but that might be less about Your withholding from us and more about our unwillingness to cultivate, to learn, to listen, to be present. And, so, help us Holy Spirit because how we’ve navigated this far in so many situations without Your voice, that's…it’s a miracle. It’s Your kindness and Your mercy and Your patience, shepherding us when were not even listening. But the joy of listening means that we will be led into pasture and we won’t be stolen or killed or destroyed. So, come Holy Spirit. Help us to hear Your voice today we pray. In Jesus’ name we ask. Amen.

Hi DAB family this is Gigi from GVille. I wanted to share with you something today that I feel like it was the word from the Lord or for…for us and it is in Isaiah…it’s Isaiah 52 verse 2 it says shake thy self from the dust arise and sit down in a good sit Oh Jerusalem, loose thyself from the bands of thy neck oh captive daughter of Zion. And what I…I feel like the Lord is saying is that he has won the victory. He has done it, but it takes our faith, our response to Him we have to…to remove that…that band around our neck, to rise off…rise off from the floor and the dust and in the dirt and be able to, you know, sit it His authority enthroned with Him on high and to be able to move forward in His victory. We have to claim it, we have to believe that He has done it. Because the…the devil comes around like a roaring lion, but his only power is to deceive us, that the victory isn’t won, we’re still fighting, we have to work hard. And…and we fail. We don’t have the power, but God gives us the power and He has done it and in faith we respond, we receive, and the Lord has delivered us. In Jesus’ name I speak victory over you guys. You guys run the race, stand in the power of God and you will see what God has done in your life and overcome. And the world will know that He lives within you. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

This message is for God’s Smile. This is momma ‘D’ in New Albany, Indiana. I heard your story today about how when you and Peter first got together and how you had surrendered him over to God. And I, several days ago, had called in and asked for prayer for my…I’ve been standing in faith for my marriage for 2 years now and he has divorced me, but the Lord has told me to stand, and I’ve been standing for his salvation and for the restoration of our marriage. And I was driving along, I’m…I’m just driving today, on my way out of town and I was…I guess feeling a little angry and I was saying, “you know Lord, I want him saved, I don’t even think that I want him back anymore” and just as I was feeling that I heard your story about Peter and I was reminded of a time, many years ago when my husband Jim…and I do still call him my husband…my husband Jim and I were just dating but I didn’t know if we were going to be together long-term cause he was not saved. And I remember sitting at my prayer closet one night after my children were asleep and surrendering him to God and saying “God you know, I…I, I want him saved and I want us to be together and if you will do that I will praise you all the days of my life and if you don’t do that I’m still gonna praise you all the days of my life. And within a week Jim got saved and within another week he proposed to me and I said I’m so glad you’re saved now because now I can say yes. And he’s fallen away, and he’s stepped out of our marriage for something else, but the Lord said to me, “don’t you think I could do it again?” Thank you for your encouragement God’s Smile, thank you so, so much. God used you today.

The Daily Audio Bible Reading for Tuesday May 18, 2021 (NIV)

1 Samuel 22-23

David at the Cave of Adullam

22 David departed from there and escaped to (A)the cave of (B)Adullam. And when his brothers and all his father's house heard it, they went down there to him. (C)And everyone who was in distress, and everyone who was in debt, and everyone who was bitter in soul,[a] gathered to him. And he became commander over them. And there were with him (D)about four hundred men.

And David went from there to Mizpeh of Moab. And he said to the king of Moab, “Please let my father and my mother stay[b] with you, till I know what God will do for me.” And he left them with the king of Moab, and they stayed with him all the time that David was in the stronghold. Then the prophet (E)Gad said to David, “Do not remain in the stronghold; depart, and go into the land of Judah.” So David departed and went into the forest of Hereth.

Saul Kills the Priests at Nob

Now Saul heard that David was discovered, and the men who were with him. Saul was sitting at Gibeah under (F)the tamarisk tree on the height with his spear in his hand, and all his servants were standing about him. And Saul said to his servants who stood about him, “Hear now, people of Benjamin; will the son of Jesse (G)give every one of you fields and vineyards, will he make you all commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds, that all of you have conspired against me? No one discloses to me (H)when my son makes a covenant with the son of Jesse. None of you (I)is sorry for me or discloses to me that my son has stirred up my servant against me, (J)to lie in wait, as at this day.” Then answered (K)Doeg the Edomite, who stood by the servants of Saul, “I saw the son of Jesse (L)coming to Nob, to (M)Ahimelech the son of Ahitub, 10 (N)and he inquired of the Lord for him and (O)gave him provisions and gave him the sword of Goliath the Philistine.”

11 Then the king sent to summon Ahimelech the priest, the son of Ahitub, and all his father's house, the priests who were at Nob, and all of them came to the king. 12 And Saul said, “Hear now, son of Ahitub.” And he answered, “Here I am, my lord.” 13 And Saul said to him, “Why have you conspired against me, you and the son of Jesse, in that you have given him bread and a sword and (P)have inquired of God for him, so that he has risen against me, (Q)to lie in wait, as at this day?” 14 Then Ahimelech answered the king, “And who among all your servants is so faithful as David, who is the king's son-in-law, and captain over[c] your bodyguard, and honored in your house? 15 Is today the first time (R)that I have inquired of God for him? No! Let not the king impute anything to his servant or to all the house of my father, for your servant has known nothing of all this, (S)much or little.” 16 And the king said, “You shall surely die, Ahimelech, you and all your father's house.” 17 And the king said to (T)the guard who stood about him, “Turn and kill the priests of the Lord, because their hand also is with David, and they knew that he fled and did not disclose it to me.” But the servants of the king would not put out their hand to strike the priests of the Lord. 18 Then the king said to Doeg, “You turn and strike the priests.” And Doeg the Edomite turned and struck down the priests, (U)and he killed on that day eighty-five persons who wore the linen ephod. 19 And Nob, the city of the priests, he put to the sword; (V)both man and woman, child and infant, ox, donkey and sheep, he put to the sword.

20 But one of the sons of Ahimelech the son of Ahitub, named (W)Abiathar, escaped and fled after David. 21 And Abiathar told David that Saul had killed the priests of the Lord. 22 And David said to Abiathar, “I knew on that day, (X)when Doeg the Edomite was there, that he would surely tell Saul. I have occasioned the death of all the persons of your father's house. 23 (Y)Stay with me; do not be afraid, for he who seeks my life seeks your life. With me you shall be in safekeeping.”

David Saves the City of Keilah

23 Now they told David, “Behold, the Philistines are fighting against (Z)Keilah and are robbing the threshing floors.” Therefore David (AA)inquired of the Lord, “Shall I go and attack these Philistines?” And the Lord said to David, “Go and attack the Philistines and save Keilah.” But David's men said to him, “Behold, we are afraid here in Judah; how much more then if we go to Keilah against the armies of the Philistines?” Then David (AB)inquired of the Lord again. And the Lord answered him, “Arise, go down to Keilah, (AC)for I will give the Philistines into your hand.” And David and his men went to Keilah and fought with the Philistines and brought away their livestock and struck them with a great blow. So David saved the inhabitants of Keilah.

(AD)When Abiathar the son of Ahimelech had fled to David to Keilah, he had come down with an ephod in his hand. Now it was told Saul that David had come to Keilah. And Saul said, “God has given him into my hand, for he has shut himself in by entering a town that has gates and bars.” And Saul summoned all the people to war, to go down to Keilah, to besiege David and his men. David knew that Saul was plotting harm against him. And he said to Abiathar the priest, (AE)“Bring the ephod here.” 10 Then David said, “O Lord, the God of Israel, your servant has surely heard that Saul seeks to come to Keilah, to destroy the city on my account. 11 Will the men of Keilah surrender me into his hand? Will Saul come down, as your servant has heard? O Lord, the God of Israel, please tell your servant.” And the Lord said, “He will come down.” 12 Then David said, “Will the men of Keilah surrender me and my men into the hand of Saul?” And the Lord said, (AF)“They will surrender you.” 13 Then David and his men, (AG)who were about six hundred, arose and departed from Keilah, and they went (AH)wherever they could go. When Saul was told that David had escaped from Keilah, he gave up the expedition. 14 And David remained in the strongholds in the wilderness, in the hill country (AI)of the wilderness of (AJ)Ziph. And Saul sought him every day, but God did not give him into his hand.

Saul Pursues David

15 David saw that Saul had come out to seek his life. David was in the wilderness of Ziph at Horesh. 16 And Jonathan, Saul's son, rose and went to David at Horesh, and strengthened his hand in God. 17 And he said to him, “Do not fear, for the hand of Saul my father shall not find you. You shall be king over Israel, and I shall be next to you. (AK)Saul my father also knows this.” 18 (AL)And the two of them made a covenant before the Lord. David remained at Horesh, and Jonathan went home.

19 (AM)Then the Ziphites went up to Saul at Gibeah, saying, “Is not David hiding among us in the strongholds at Horesh, on the hill of Hachilah, which is south of (AN)Jeshimon? 20 Now come down, O king, according to all your heart's desire to come down, (AO)and our part shall be to surrender him into the king's hand.” 21 And Saul said, (AP)“May you be blessed by the Lord, (AQ)for you have had compassion on me. 22 Go, make yet more sure. Know and see the place where his foot is, and who has seen him there, for it is told me that he is very cunning. 23 See therefore and take note of all the lurking places where he hides, and come back to me with sure information. Then I will go with you. And if he is in the land, I will search him out among all the thousands of Judah.” 24 And they arose and went to Ziph ahead of Saul.

Now David and his men were (AR)in the wilderness of Maon, (AS)in the Arabah to the south of (AT)Jeshimon. 25 And Saul and his men went to seek him. And David was told, so he went down to the rock and lived in the wilderness of Maon. And when Saul heard that, he pursued after David in the wilderness of Maon. 26 Saul went on one side of the mountain, and David and his men on the other side of the mountain. And David was hurrying to get away from Saul. As Saul and his men were closing in on David and his men to capture them, 27 a messenger came to Saul, saying, “Hurry and come, for the Philistines have made a raid against the land.” 28 So Saul returned from pursuing after David and went against the Philistines. Therefore that place was called the Rock of Escape.[d] 29 [e] And David went up from there and lived in the strongholds of (AU)Engedi.

John 10:1-21

I Am the Good Shepherd

10 “Truly, truly, I say to you, he who does not enter the sheepfold by the door but climbs in by another way, that man is a thief and a robber. But he who enters by the door is the shepherd of the sheep. To him the gatekeeper opens. The sheep hear his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. When he has brought out all his own, he goes before them, and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice. (A)A stranger they will not follow, but they will flee from him, for they do not know the voice of strangers.” This figure of speech Jesus (B)used with them, but they (C)did not understand what he was saying to them.

So Jesus again said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, (D)I am the door of the sheep. All who came before me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them. I am the door. If anyone enters by me, (E)he will be saved and will go in and out and (F)find pasture. 10 The thief comes only to steal and (G)kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly. 11 (H)I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd (I)lays down his life for the sheep. 12 He who is (J)a hired hand and not a shepherd, who does not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming and (K)leaves the sheep and flees, and the wolf snatches them and (L)scatters them. 13 He flees because (M)he is a hired hand and (N)cares nothing for the sheep. 14 (O)I am the good shepherd. (P)I know my own and (Q)my own know me, 15 (R)just as the Father knows me and I know the Father; and (S)I lay down my life for the sheep. 16 And (T)I have other sheep that are not of this fold. (U)I must bring them also, and (V)they will listen to my voice. So there will be (W)one flock, (X)one shepherd. 17 (Y)For this reason the Father loves me, (Z)because (AA)I lay down my life that I may take it up again. 18 (AB)No one takes it from me, but (AC)I lay it down (AD)of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down, and (AE)I have authority to take it up again. (AF)This charge I have received from my Father.”

19 (AG)There was again a division among the Jews because of these words. 20 Many of them said, (AH)“He has a demon, and (AI)is insane; why listen to him?” 21 Others said, “These are not the words of one who is oppressed by a demon. (AJ)Can a demon open the eyes of the blind?”

Psalm 115

To Your Name Give Glory

115 (A)Not to us, O Lord, not to us, but to your name give glory,
(B)for the sake of your steadfast love and your faithfulness!

Why should the nations say,
(C)“Where is their God?”
(D)Our God is in the heavens;
(E)he does all that he pleases.

(F)Their idols are silver and gold,
(G)the work of human hands.
They have mouths, (H)but do not speak;
eyes, but do not see.
They have ears, but do not hear;
noses, but do not smell.
They have hands, but do not feel;
feet, but do not walk;
and they do not make a sound in their throat.
(I)Those who make them become like them;
so do all who trust in them.

O (J)Israel,[a] (K)trust in the Lord!
He is their (L)help and their shield.
10 O (M)house of Aaron, trust in the Lord!
He is their help and (N)their shield.
11 You (O)who fear the Lord, trust in the Lord!
He is their help and their shield.

12 The Lord has remembered us; he will bless us;
he will bless (P)the house of Israel;
he will bless (Q)the house of Aaron;
13 he will (R)bless those who fear the Lord,
(S)both the small and the great.

14 May the Lord (T)give you increase,
you and your children!
15 May (U)you be blessed by the Lord,
(V)who made heaven and earth!

16 The heavens are the Lord's heavens,
but the earth he has given to the children of man.
17 (W)The dead do not praise the Lord,
nor do any who go down into (X)silence.
18 But (Y)we will bless the Lord
from this time forth and forevermore.
(Z)Praise the Lord!

Proverbs 15:18-19

18 (A)A hot-tempered man (B)stirs up strife,
but he who is (C)slow to anger quiets contention.
19 The way of (D)a sluggard is like a hedge of (E)thorns,
but the path of the upright is (F)a level highway.

1 Samuel 20:1-21:15, John 9:1-41, Psalms 113:1-114:8, Proverbs 15:15-17

Today is the 17th day of May welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I am Brian it is always a joy to come around the Global Campfire together and find a place and just let the Scriptures speak for themselves and speak over us and speak into our lives. And, so, let's…let’s move in that direction, which is what we’ve come here for. We are working our way through the book of First Samuel. We have gotten to know Samuel in that book and his story. We have also watched Samuel anointed Israel’s first king, Saul. We have also met the shepherd boy David who killed a giant. And that set off in motion an intertwining of the king’s life with this boy, David. Saul, in his insecurity, has him doing all kinds of erratic things. He’s tried to kill David a couple times with a spear himself. He has tried to bring David closer by…by giving his daughter in marriage so that David’s his son-in-law, but he still wants him dead. His son Jonathan, the Prince of Israel, Saul’s son loves David and is trying to protect him. It’s just a very, very erratic situation that we’ve got going on. And, so, we’ll pick up with that drama today. We’re reading from the English Standard version this week. First Samuel 20 and 21.

Commentary:

Okay. Let’s talk about blindness today. We have a very very vivid, detailed story in the gospel of John about a man who had been blind from birth. He had only ever been blind. He didn’t lose his site in an accident or have an illness that took away his sight. He was born blind. So, that’s sort of the backdrop as we enter the story. This the fourth of the gospels, so we’ve been reading the stories of Jesus ministry and His personality and His life since we began our journey at the beginning of the year. And, so, we have seen Jesus heal many times and we’ve ironically seen him open the eyes of the blind and he seems to be intentionally picking the Sabbath day to do this. So, because we’re seeing this kind of repeated in the stories in the Gospels, this pattern of opening eyes on the Sabbath day, maybe there are layers here. Maybe this is a living parable that has some depth to it, depth for the time, the actual situation that Jesus was speaking into, but significant depth for us as well. See, almost since the beginning we’ve been hearing Jesus talk about the kingdom of heaven and…and this was language that really had people listening because they were looking for a leader, a Messiah, an anointed one. And we’ve talked about this before. So, we they…the language that He was using was something that was capturing their attention. And then that accompanied by these signs, they’re paying very, very close attention. And does Jesus say so often when He is talking about the kingdom? So often, He’s telling them that the thing that they’re looking for isn’t the thing that’s coming. The thing that they’re looking for is actually already here if they would open their eyes, if they would have eyes to see, right, and ears to hear, that they would be able to see what they were not seeing, so that they would have to see differently to see what Jesus was talking about. And they couldn’t see it. So, then there’s this man. It’s the Sabbath day and he hasn’t seen a thing. He hasn’t seen a day in his life. And Jesus spits on around to make some mud and spreads it on his eyes, which is…I guess that’s cool…a little weird…but it’s fine because the man went to the pool of Siloam and washed, and he could see. He had been blind, but now he could see. So, when he kinda getsd back to the place where he had been previously, maybe looking of Jesus or just back in his own neighborhood, whatever, people recognize him and they’re like, “isn’t he the blind guy?” And, so, this does cause a commotion because this blind person from birth is seeing so people are talking. And eventually the news gets to…to a Pharisee, probably who shares it with another Pharisee. Nevertheless, they come together and start doing some inquiry and they find out Jesus is involved here. And what is their first response? “This cannot be an act of God because this is on the Sabbath day and it has been determined that healing is work. So, He’s working on the Sabbath day breaking the law of God. So, this can’t be of God.” Which causes some problems among the people and they actually step forward and confront the situation. They’re like, “yeah but…yeah but a miracle happened. See that’s the thing. How could some sinner breaking the Sabbath do this?” And then they’re questioning the man’s parents who are verifying “he’s our son and he was born blind. Other than that, he can speak for himself. He’s an adult.” Because they want me thrown out of the synagogue, that could cause…definitely social problems. And, so, they go back and question this formally blind man, “specifically what did he do? How did he do this? Like what were the procedures? What was the process? How did he do all these things?” And the man’s just sharing what he knows. And then they’re like, “we know…we know that He is a sinner. We know that this Jesus is a sinner.” And the man says, “I…I don’t know that. Like, I don’t know whether He is a sinner not. I just know I woke up blind today like I woke up every other day of my life and now I see.” And they’re like, we’re disciples of Moses and we don’t even know where this Jesus comes from.” And he’s like, “guys, I was born blind, and I can see, and you can’t figure out where this person came from? If he didn’t come from God, this couldn’t have happened.” Okay. So, if we zoom out and just think about the story, who’s blind in this story? Isn’t it the religious leaders coming against Jesus, God in the flesh, the religious leaders defending God against God, defending the rule, defending the rule of the Sabbath and how they had fleshed out what that rule actually means with their theology? They’re holding onto that thing that they have figured out and defending that thing in the face of God, Like, they’re so blind that they can’t acknowledge what the people can see, obviously. He was blind he can see. It’s a miracle of God. There is no other answer. And yet they’re like, “yes, there is an answer. these things would not happen on the Sabbath.” Why does Jesus keep doing these kinds of things on the Sabbath? He’s opening eyes that they might see. Physically see, physically become free, become able to see while simultaneously exposing the blindness of the religious leaders who have now got themselves in a position where they think they are defending God and His law and they are sold blind that they cannot recognize God is in front of them speaking to them and giving them signs and wonders to see it that their eyes might be open so that they could see. So, that puts things squarely there in the Pharisee in common Jewish people land. That puts us back in the first century with Jesus, but what about us? How much of what we think we know, how many of our theological formulas would we be staunchly defensive about even if God did something that flew in the face of that? Would we be like, “it’s just trickery because God wouldn’t do something like that on this particular day in this particular fashion using these particular people who I think might believe things differently than I do?” I mean, sometimes do we not look more like the Pharisees than any other characters in these stories. Do we not constantly work out our formulas about what God will and will not do and with whom He might do it? When we live from that place we have to first acknowledge we’re afraid to get it wrong, which is valid enough. But in an effort to not get it wrong we build a box and then we try to stuff God in that box. And He doesn’t care about our box. He cares about the hearts of the people upon this earth that He desires to be in fellowship with. And we’re His children and we’re supposed to be pointing that way, but all too often, like all too often we’re defending our box when God might be right in front of us on the move and we just don’t have eyes to see. We think we know all this stuff. We think we have all these answers, but we don’t have eyes to see that God is the Sovereign most-high Commander of Angel Armies Creator of everything that is known and everything that is beyond our knowing. He will do whatever He wants to do. He is God and what He wants to do is work through us to redeem this place, to reveal and His kingdom and his purposes that have been thwarted by all these boxes we keep constructing. And, so, really at the heart of this story is an invitation for us to examine our own blindness because if there’s one thing we’re gonna need going forward in this world, it’s going to be eyes to see and ears to hear what the Spirit is doing.

Prayer:

Holy Spirit come, come into that. So often we keep asking for eyes to see and ears to hear, and so often we see these examples and so often we are counselled that this begins by slowing down a little bit, taking a beat, stop just reacting to everything slow down and look, look for where love is breaking out, look where life and light are, where is the good news. This is how we begin to find the kingdom. And we begin to perpetuate the kingdom by not reacting to things just so we can be right so that we take the beat, slow down, and listen to what You are speaking. What is our assignment Father? We spend ourselves…our time meddling in so many things that we have no business being involved that…that we so often never get to the things that we do belong being involved in. And, so, come Holy Spirit, continue to guide us forward, continue to transform us, we pray. In the precious name of Jesus, we ask. Amen.

Community Prayer and Praise:

This is Laurie from Texas I’m calling in to pray specifically for, I couldn’t tell if it was Peg or Meg from Texas about her 15-year-old grandson who has been diagnosed with ADD and is rebellious and the parents are at their wits end as to what to do. So, I want to pray over that. Heavenly Father, we know that all humans walking this earth are under Your love and You have a purpose and a direction for their life. And we’ve all chosen at times in our life to rebel. Father, I know that You are faithful. I pray that grandmothers, parents, people that love these children, teachers, everyone in their life Father that knows You, I pray that they would continue unceasingly to pray on behalf of those that struggle with rebellion, that struggle with feelings of being different, being inferior, not fitting in. Father, we don’t always know what…what is behind these feelings, but You know everything, and I know personally that You are faithful. I know that we…we just continue to pray and believe and that You will work your power in the life of this child specifically, that You would grant comfort and his grandmother, that You would give her courage and the strength to carry-on in prayer and that You would also bless the parents with wisdom to know what to do. I thank You God because You are so good. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Hello DAB family this is Lynn Who Loves the Lord calling from Arizona with a praise report. I wanted to let you know that my husband’s foot surgery went well on Wednesday, May 12th and the doctor says that he has a month’s more of healing and should be good to go, praise God. I also wanted to report back that my shoulder is doing a bit better. I would appreciate continued prayers for healing there. And I just wanted to share recently I’ve been listening to the DAB Global Campfire Community prayers, I’ve been reminded once again about what a really big, mighty, awesome, holy God we serve. It just blessed my soul to hear how God is using Brian and the DAB Community to meet others where they are. Recently, I was tickled to hear about a woman in Oceanside California praying and asking for a Christian friend and then another woman answering the call. I also heard two gentlemen in Pennsylvania trying to Connect and encourage one another. And then just yesterday it just blessed me so to hear the recovered Minister Uncle Joey encouraging the younger woman who was praying for her Uncle Joey in a similar situation. It just…oh it just made me smile. And to say God You are so good, You are so awesome. Thank You for answering our prayers. And then finally just a little tip that I was remembering from a…that I got from a former pastor, Pastor Bill G in Redding, California, would say something to this effect: we tend to gaze at our problems and just kind of get fixated on them and then maybe just glance at God and say a quick prayer when we need to flip that around and gaze at God, gaze at God’s awesomeness, His holiness, His…how amazing He is, how wonderful He is, and then glance at our issues. Of course, occasionally we have to take a look at things and…and deal with problems but not obsess over them. Just trust in our Holy, Mighty Awesome God. He’s got this. He’s got the whole world in His hands. He’s got this covered…

Hi Daily Audio Bible family my name is Ashlyn and I’m calling from Australia with a prayer request for two family members of mine in particular. Firstly, my auntie, she’s like a second mom to me but has tried for many years to have children unsuccessfully and that’s been a source of a lot of heartache for her and most recently has been subject to a lot of really difficult legal proceedings that have been hurtful and there’s just a lot of heaviness over her situation, a lot of darkness that needs covering in the name of Jesus. And I just, yeah, ask that you pray that through this difficult time which has stretched over a period of many years that she would find faith and call on the name of the Lord and be saved and find, yeah, joy that lasts for eternity. And yeah, similarly I would love prayer for my brother. His name is Ryan. He is not a believer either and just he has been not coping very well lately with a lot of anxiety and I’ve seen that transform from something more minor into something very less controlling. So, yeah, he needs prayer as well, that God would just take the reins of his…of his heart, his mind and that he would have a road to Damascus experience and come back to…to God. and, yeah, I really appreciate your prayers over my family, and we’ll continue to uplift all you guys in prayer as you send requests in. So, thank you so much. God bless you guys from Adelaide Australia.

1 Samuel 20-21

Jonathan Warns David

20 Then David fled from Naioth (A)in Ramah and came and said before Jonathan, “What have I done? What is my guilt? And what is my sin before your father, that he seeks my life?” And he said to him, “Far from it! You shall not die. Behold, my father does nothing either great or small without disclosing it to me. And why should my father hide this from me? It is not so.” But David vowed again, saying, “Your father knows well that (B)I have found favor in your eyes, and he thinks, ‘Do not let Jonathan know this, lest he be grieved.’ But truly, (C)as the Lord lives and (D)as your soul lives, there is but a step between me and death.” Then Jonathan said to David, “Whatever you say, I will do for you.” David said to Jonathan, “Behold, tomorrow is (E)the new moon, and I should not fail to sit at table with the king. But let me go, (F)that I may hide myself in the field till the third day at evening. (G)If your father misses me at all, then say, ‘David earnestly asked leave of me to run (H)to Bethlehem his city, for there is a yearly (I)sacrifice there for all the clan.’ If he says, ‘Good!’ it will be well with your servant, but if he is angry, then know that (J)harm is determined by him. Therefore deal kindly with your servant, (K)for you have brought your servant into a covenant of the Lord with you. (L)But if there is guilt in me, kill me yourself, for why should you bring me to your father?” And Jonathan said, “Far be it from you! If I knew that (M)it was determined by my father that harm should come to you, would I not tell you?” 10 Then David said to Jonathan, “Who will tell me if your father answers you roughly?” 11 And Jonathan said to David, “Come, let us go out into the field.” So they both went out into the field.

12 And Jonathan said to David, “The Lord, the God of Israel, be witness![a] When I have sounded out my father, about this time tomorrow, or the third day, behold, if he is well disposed toward David, shall I not then send and disclose it to you? 13 But should it please my father to do you harm, (N)the Lord do so to Jonathan and more also if I do not disclose it to you and send you away, that you may go in safety. (O)May the Lord be with you, as he has been with my father. 14 If I am still alive, show me the steadfast love of the Lord, that I may not die; 15 (P)and do not cut off[b] your steadfast love from my house forever, when the Lord cuts off every one of the enemies of David from the face of the earth.” 16 And Jonathan made a covenant with the house of David, saying, (Q)“May[c] the Lord take vengeance on David's enemies.” 17 And Jonathan made David swear again by his love for him, (R)for he loved him as he loved his own soul.

18 Then Jonathan said to him, (S)“Tomorrow is the new moon, and (T)you will be missed, because (U)your seat will be empty. 19 On the third day go down quickly to the place where you hid yourself when the matter was in hand, and remain beside the stone heap.[d] 20 And I will shoot three arrows to the side of it, as though I shot at a mark. 21 And behold, I will send the boy, saying, ‘Go, find the arrows.’ If I say to the boy, ‘Look, the arrows are on this side of you, take them,’ then you are to come, for, (V)as the Lord lives, it is safe for you and there is no danger. 22 But if I say to the youth, (W)‘Look, the arrows are beyond you,’ then go, for the Lord has sent you away. 23 (X)And as for the matter of which you and I have spoken, behold, (Y)the Lord is between you and me forever.”

24 So David hid himself in the field. And when the new moon came, the king sat down to eat food. 25 The king sat on his seat, as at other times, on the seat by the wall. Jonathan sat opposite,[e] and Abner sat by Saul's side, (Z)but David's place was empty.

26 Yet Saul did not say anything that day, for he thought, “Something has happened to him. (AA)He is not clean; surely he is not clean.” 27 But on (AB)the second day, the day after the new moon, (AC)David's place was empty. And Saul said to Jonathan his son, “Why has not the son of Jesse come to the meal, either yesterday or today?” 28 Jonathan answered Saul, (AD)“David earnestly asked leave of me to go to Bethlehem. 29 He said, ‘Let me go, for our clan holds a sacrifice in the city, and my brother has commanded me to be there. So now, if I have found favor in your eyes, let me get away and see my brothers.’ For this reason he has not come to the king's table.”

30 Then Saul's anger was kindled against Jonathan, and he said to him, “You son of a perverse, rebellious woman, do I not know that you have chosen the son of Jesse to your own shame, and to the shame of your mother's nakedness? 31 For as long as the son of Jesse lives on the earth, neither you nor your kingdom shall be established. Therefore send and bring him to me, for he shall surely die.” 32 Then Jonathan answered Saul his father, (AE)“Why should he be put to death? What has he done?” 33 (AF)But Saul hurled his spear at him to strike him. So Jonathan knew (AG)that his father was determined to put David to death. 34 And Jonathan rose from the table in fierce anger and ate no food the second day of the month, for he was grieved for David, because his father had disgraced him.

35 In the morning Jonathan went out into the field to the appointment with David, and with him a little boy. 36 And he said to his boy, “Run and find the arrows that I shoot.” As the boy ran, he shot an arrow beyond him. 37 And when the boy came to the place of the arrow that Jonathan had shot, Jonathan called after the boy and said, (AH)“Is not the arrow beyond you?” 38 And Jonathan called after the boy, “Hurry! Be quick! Do not stay!” So Jonathan's boy gathered up the arrows and came to his master. 39 But the boy knew nothing. Only Jonathan and David knew the matter. 40 And Jonathan gave his weapons to his boy and said to him, “Go and carry them to the city.” 41 And as soon as the boy had gone, David rose from beside the stone heap[f] and fell on his face to the ground and bowed three times. And they kissed one another and wept with one another, David weeping the most. 42 Then Jonathan said to David, (AI)“Go in peace, because we have sworn both of us in the name of the Lord, saying, (AJ)‘The Lord shall be between me and you, (AK)and between my offspring and your offspring, forever.’” And he rose and departed, and Jonathan went into the city.[g]

David and the Holy Bread

21 [h] Then David came to (AL)Nob, to (AM)Ahimelech the priest. And Ahimelech (AN)came to meet David, trembling, and said to him, “Why are you alone, and no one with you?” And David said to Ahimelech the priest, “The king has charged me with a matter and said to me, ‘Let no one know anything of the matter about which I send you, and with which I have charged you.’ I have made an appointment with the young men for such and such a place. Now then, what do you have on hand? Give me five loaves of bread, or whatever is here.” And the priest answered David, “I have no common bread on hand, but there is (AO)holy bread—(AP)if the young men have kept themselves from women.” And David answered the priest, “Truly women have been kept from us as always when I go on an expedition. The vessels of the young men are holy even when it is an ordinary journey. How much more today will their vessels be holy?” So the priest gave him (AQ)the holy bread, for there was no bread there but the bread of the Presence, (AR)which is removed from before the Lord, to be replaced by hot bread on the day it is taken away.

Now a certain man of the servants of Saul was there that day, detained before the Lord. His name was (AS)Doeg the Edomite, the chief of Saul's herdsmen.

Then David said to Ahimelech, “Then have you not here a spear or a sword at hand? For I have brought neither my sword nor my weapons with me, because the king's business required haste.” And the priest said, (AT)“The sword of Goliath the Philistine, whom you struck down in (AU)the Valley of Elah, behold, it is here wrapped in a cloth behind the ephod. If you will take that, take it, for there is none but that here.” And David said, “There is none like that; give it to me.”

David Flees to Gath

10 And David rose and fled that day from Saul and went to (AV)Achish the king of Gath. 11 And the servants of Achish said to him, “Is not this David the king of the land? (AW)Did they not sing to one another of him in dances,

‘Saul has struck down his thousands,
and David his ten thousands’?”

12 And David (AX)took these words to heart and was much afraid of Achish the king of Gath. 13 So he changed his behavior before them and pretended to be insane in their hands and made marks on the doors of the gate and let his spittle run down his beard. 14 Then Achish said to his servants, “Behold, you see the man is mad. Why then have you brought him to me? 15 Do I lack madmen, that you have brought this fellow to behave as a madman in my presence? Shall this fellow come into my house?”

John 9

Jesus Heals a Man Born Blind

As he passed by, he saw a man blind from birth. And his disciples asked him, (A)“Rabbi, (B)who sinned, (C)this man or (D)his parents, that he was born blind?” Jesus answered, “It was not that this man sinned, or his parents, but (E)that the works of God might be displayed in him. We must (F)work the works of him who sent me (G)while it is day; night is coming, when no one can work. As long as I am in the world, (H)I am the light of the world.” Having said these things, (I)he spit on the ground and made mud with the saliva. (J)Then he anointed the man's eyes with the mud and said to him, “Go, wash in (K)the pool of Siloam” (which means Sent). So he went and washed and (L)came back seeing.

The neighbors and those who had seen him before as a beggar were saying, (M)“Is this not the man who used to sit and beg?” Some said, “It is he.” Others said, “No, but he is like him.” He kept saying, “I am the man.” 10 So they said to him, “Then how were your eyes opened?” 11 He answered, (N)“The man called Jesus made mud and anointed my eyes and said to me, ‘Go to Siloam and wash.’ So I went and washed and received my sight.” 12 They said to him, “Where is he?” He said, “I do not know.”

13 They brought to the Pharisees the man who had formerly been blind. 14 (O)Now it was a Sabbath day when Jesus made the mud and opened his eyes. 15 (P)So the Pharisees again asked him how he had received his sight. And he said to them, “He put mud on my eyes, and I washed, and I see.” 16 Some of the Pharisees said, “This man is not (Q)from God, (R)for he does not keep the Sabbath.” But others said, (S)“How can a man who is a sinner do such signs?” And (T)there was a division among them. 17 So they said again to the blind man, “What do you say about him, since he has opened your eyes?” He said, (U)“He is a prophet.”

18 (V)The Jews[a] did not believe that he had been blind and had received his sight, until they called the parents of the man who had received his sight 19 and asked them, “Is this your son, who you say was born blind? How then does he now see?” 20 His parents answered, “We know that this is our son and that he was born blind. 21 But how he now sees we do not know, nor do we know who opened his eyes. Ask him; he is of age. He will speak for himself.” 22 (His parents said these things (W)because they feared the Jews, for (X)the Jews had already agreed that if anyone should (Y)confess Jesus[b] to be Christ, (Z)he was to be put out of the synagogue.) 23 Therefore his parents said, (AA)“He is of age; ask him.”

24 So for the second time they called the man who had been blind and said to him, (AB)“Give glory to God. We know that (AC)this man is a sinner.” 25 He answered, “Whether he is a sinner I do not know. One thing I do know, that though I (AD)was blind, now I see.” 26 They said to him, “What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?” 27 He answered them, (AE)“I have told you already, and you would not listen. Why do you want to hear it again? Do you also want to become his disciples?” 28 And they reviled him, saying, “You are his disciple, but (AF)we are disciples of Moses. 29 We know that God has spoken to Moses, but as for this man, (AG)we do not know where he comes from.” 30 The man answered, “Why, this is (AH)an amazing thing! (AI)You do not know where he comes from, and yet he opened my eyes. 31 We know that (AJ)God does not listen to sinners, but (AK)if anyone is a worshiper of God and does his will, God listens to him. 32 Never since the world began has it been heard that anyone opened the eyes of a man born blind. 33 (AL)If this man were not from God, he could do nothing.” 34 They answered him, (AM)“You were born in utter sin, and would you teach us?” And they (AN)cast him out.

35 Jesus heard that they had cast him out, and having found him he said, “Do you believe in (AO)the Son of Man?”[c] 36 He answered, (AP)“And who is he, sir, that I may believe in him?” 37 Jesus said to him, “You have seen him, and (AQ)it is he who is speaking to you.” 38 He said, “Lord, I believe,” and he worshiped him. 39 Jesus said, (AR)“For judgment I came into this world, (AS)that those who do not see may see, and (AT)those who see may become blind.” 40 Some of the Pharisees near him heard these things, and said to him, (AU)“Are we also blind?” 41 Jesus said to them, “If you were blind, (AV)you would have no guilt;[d] but now that you say, ‘We see,’ your guilt remains.

Psalm 113-114

Who Is like the Lord Our God?

113 (A)Praise the Lord!
(B)Praise, O (C)servants of the Lord,
praise the name of the Lord!

(D)Blessed be the name of the Lord
from this time forth and forevermore!
(E)From the rising of the sun to its setting,
(F)the name of the Lord is (G)to be praised!

The Lord is (H)high above all nations,
and his (I)glory above the heavens!
(J)Who is like the Lord our God,
who is seated on high,
who (K)looks far down
on the heavens and the earth?
He (L)raises the poor from the dust
and lifts the needy from the ash heap,
to make them (M)sit with princes,
with the princes of his people.
He (N)gives the barren woman a home,
making her the joyous mother of children.
(O)Praise the Lord!

Tremble at the Presence of the Lord

114 When (P)Israel went out from Egypt,
the house of Jacob from (Q)a people of strange language,
Judah became his (R)sanctuary,
Israel his dominion.

(S)The sea looked and fled;
(T)Jordan turned back.
(U)The mountains skipped like rams,
the hills like lambs.

What (V)ails you, O sea, that you flee?
O Jordan, that you turn back?
O mountains, that you skip like rams?
O hills, like lambs?

(W)Tremble, O earth, at the presence of the Lord,
at the presence of the God of Jacob,
who turns (X)the rock into (Y)a pool of water,
(Z)the flint into a spring of water.

Proverbs 15:15-17

15 All the days of the afflicted are evil,
but (A)the cheerful of heart has a continual feast.
16 (B)Better is a little with the fear of the Lord
than great treasure and trouble with it.
17 (C)Better is a dinner of herbs where love is
than (D)a fattened ox and hatred with it.

1 Samuel 18:5-19:24, John 8:31-59, Psalm 112:1-10, Proverbs 15:12-14

Today is the 16th day of May welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I’m Brian it’s great to be here with you today as we greet another shiny, sparkly week and step through the threshold into that week together seeking God’s wisdom from the scriptures. So, this week we’ll read from the English Standard Version and we’ll pick-up our story now. David, whom we’ve met and King Saul, Israel’s first king, their lives are intertwined. David has killed the giant Goliath and now he’s a national hero. He was like a shepherd boy and overnight he becomes this national hero. And Israel’s first King Saul, who we’ve…we’ve observed to be quite the insecure person begins a struggle with…well…with David’s popularity. So, let’s pick-up the story. 1 Samuel chapter 18 verse 5 through 19 verse 24 today.

Prayer:

Father we thank You for Your word and we thank You for bringing us across this threshold into this brand-new week. And we look out over this week as we so often do and realize that it’s…it…it’s out in front of us, nothings messed up about it yet. We get to walk into it, hand-in-hand in lock-step with…with Your guidance and the leading of Your Holy Spirit and this is our intention, to slow down, to listen, to be aware in every circumstance and to not react to things, to actually slow-down enough to hear what You’re saying. Come Holy Spirit we pray into all this, we ask because we need. Come Jesus, we ask in Your precious name. Amen.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Hello, my name is Jonathan and I’m calling for prayer for my wife. She’s 7 months pregnant and in the hospital with COVID pneumonia. Her name is Julianna, and this is just really hard. I love her very much. She means everything to me and my family. So, we have a son, a 1-year-old. I just really need the Lord to reach out and heal her and bring her home to us. So, I’d appreciate anyone’s prayers for her. I know this will probably get played a few days from now, but I believe God can…well, God is outside time and space and can move freely within them. So, I’m trusting for Him to work a miracle for her. Thank you anyone and everyone who prays for her and God Bless you.

Hi, this message is for the young lady who called in who said that she was pregnant with her significant other in college, that she was a triplet, and she was worried about raising a child, not being married and being in school. I also went through that. I was a lot younger than you. I was finishing high school and starting college. I got pregnant and I never even considered abortion because I knew that no matter what God could help me through the tough parts. And trust me there are tough parts and that’s just the same for any parent no matter the circumstance. There’s always tough parts of parenting but you can do it. It sounds like you got a big family too for support and help and they love you and I’m sure that they will love your baby as well. Don’t ever think for a second that that baby is not better off having a life even if this world is evil. God might have a plan for that baby. God has a plan for that baby. That’s why it’s here even though you thought you couldn’t have one. God gave you that baby as a present, enjoy it. This is Holly Heart in Michigan.

Hello Daily Audio Bible this is Nathan from Bloomington, Illinois. Hey, I’ve got a quick story. I’ve got this friend who just has really been struggling. I know he’s depressed. He just got on depression medication like a month or so ago. His marriage has not been good for several years. He’s been married before, he’s 60 and yadda yadda yadda. He just doesn’t want to have to go through life’s struggles. And then he caught COVID. And he put it off about getting any kind of help or…and then he got bacterial pneumonia and went into the hospital. He’s a pretty healthy person, he’s also very stubborn. But he had to be ventilated and…and I know that had to be tough as he saw his life pass before his eyes. His daughter was with him and he was her dis__. I just bought my grandchildren fishing poles I’ll just never be able to go fishing with them. That was last week. I talked to him last night. He pulled his own tube out and they discharged him from the hospital 4 days after being ventilated because so many people were praying for his life and have been for a while. His attitude was totally different. Life’s too short to allow things to happen that you have control over. He’s a different man, I tell ya. So, just something to think about. Embrace your…

Hey DAB fam, this is Preston from the Bay Area. I’m calling in today to lift up Dana from Alabama. You work in manufacturing. I just am calling to lift you up that God would give you the strength to handle these…these men you work with. Having bullies in the workplace can make a fantastic job very difficult. And I…I understand where you’re coming from. So, I’ll just go ahead and pray. Dear Father, we lift up…we lift up Dana. We thank You that You have blessed her with a wonderful job, a job that she loves, a job that she’s very proud to have Father. We thank you that you have blessed her this far and we ask that Your Holy Spirit would just continue to bless her at this job. Father, we ask for Your blessing, we ask for Your intervention in the situation for her at work. We just ask that Your Holy Spirit would create peace and cause these men to humble their hearts and recognize that the pain that they’re causing and lead them to repentance Father, that this behavior would stop Father. We just ask that Your Holy Spirit would just act in this. In Your precious name, Jesus Christ…

Hello Daily Audio Bible family this is Jasmine calling. I am a Canadian missionary who’s living in Africa and I called in about a month ago asking for prayer for my husband Dennis who is struggling with COVID, malaria and with pneumonia all at the same time. I’m calling in today just to give you an update and to send in a praise. Dennis is doing much, much better. He’s still recovering but we’re so very grateful that he is breathing and walking on his own now. And, so, I just wanted to call in and say thank you. Thank you to those of you who left messages, thank you to those of you who prayed. We felt your love and your support and I’m just so very grateful to God and I just wanted to give you that update and to say…

1 Samuel 18:5-19:24

And David went out (A)and was successful wherever Saul sent him, so that Saul set him over the men of war. And this was good in the sight of all the people and also in the sight of Saul's servants.

Saul's Jealousy of David

As they were coming home, when David returned from striking down the Philistine, (B)the women came out of all the cities of Israel, singing and dancing, to meet King Saul, with tambourines, with songs of joy, and with musical instruments.[a] And the women (C)sang to one another as they celebrated,

(D)“Saul has struck down his thousands,
and David his ten thousands.”

And Saul was very angry, and this saying displeased him. He said, “They have ascribed to David ten thousands, and to me they have ascribed thousands, and what more can he have but (E)the kingdom?” And Saul eyed David from that day on.

10 The next day (F)a harmful spirit from God rushed upon Saul, and (G)he raved within his house while David was (H)playing the lyre, as he did day by day. (I)Saul had his spear in his hand. 11 And Saul (J)hurled the spear, for he thought, “I will pin David to the wall.” But David evaded him twice.

12 (K)Saul was afraid of David because (L)the Lord was with him (M)but had departed from Saul. 13 So Saul removed him from his presence and made him a commander of a thousand. (N)And he went out and came in before the people. 14 And David (O)had success in all his undertakings, (P)for the Lord was with him. 15 And when Saul saw that (Q)he had great success, he stood in fearful awe of him. 16 (R)But all Israel and Judah loved David, for he went out and came in before them.

David Marries Michal

17 Then Saul said to David, “Here is (S)my elder daughter Merab. (T)I will give her to you for a wife. Only be valiant for me (U)and fight the Lord's battles.” For Saul thought, “Let not my hand be against him, (V)but let the hand of the Philistines be against him.” 18 And David said to Saul, (W)“Who am I, and who are my relatives, my father's clan in Israel, that I should be son-in-law to the king?” 19 But at the time when Merab, Saul's daughter, should have been given to David, she was given to (X)Adriel the (Y)Meholathite for a wife.

20 Now (Z)Saul's daughter Michal (AA)loved David. And they told Saul, and the thing pleased him. 21 Saul thought, “Let me give her to him, that she may (AB)be a snare for him (AC)and that the hand of the Philistines may be against him.” Therefore Saul said to David a second time,[b] (AD)“You shall now be my son-in-law.” 22 And Saul commanded his servants, “Speak to David in private and say, ‘Behold, the king has delight in you, and all his servants love you. Now then become the king's son-in-law.’” 23 And Saul's servants spoke those words in the ears of David. And David said, (AE)“Does it seem to you a little thing to become the king's son-in-law, since I am a poor man and have no reputation?” 24 And the servants of Saul told him, “Thus and so did David speak.” 25 Then Saul said, “Thus shall you say to David, ‘The king desires no (AF)bride-price except a hundred foreskins of the Philistines, (AG)that he may be avenged of the king's enemies.’” (AH)Now Saul thought to make David fall by the hand of the Philistines. 26 And when his servants told David these words, it pleased David well to be the king's son-in-law. (AI)Before the time had expired, 27 David arose and went, (AJ)along with his men, and killed two hundred of the Philistines. (AK)And David brought their foreskins, which were given in full number to the king, that he might become the king's son-in-law. And Saul gave him his daughter Michal for a wife. 28 But when Saul saw and knew that (AL)the Lord was with David, (AM)and that Michal, Saul's daughter, loved him, 29 Saul was even more afraid of David. So Saul was David's enemy continually.

30 (AN)Then the commanders of the Philistines came out to battle, and as often as they came out (AO)David had more success than all the servants of Saul, so that his name was highly esteemed.

Saul Tries to Kill David

19 And Saul spoke to Jonathan his son and to all his servants, that they should kill David. (AP)But Jonathan, Saul's son, delighted much in David. And Jonathan told David, “Saul my father seeks to kill you. Therefore be on your guard in the morning. Stay in a secret place and hide yourself. And I will go out and stand beside my father in the field where you are, and I will speak to my father about you. And if I learn anything I will tell you.” And Jonathan spoke well of David to Saul his father and said to him, “Let not the king (AQ)sin against his servant David, because he has not sinned against you, and because his deeds have brought good to you. For (AR)he took his life in his hand (AS)and he struck down the Philistine, (AT)and the Lord worked a great salvation for all Israel. You saw it, and rejoiced. Why then will you sin against (AU)innocent blood by killing David without cause?” And Saul listened to the voice of Jonathan. Saul swore, (AV)“As the Lord lives, he shall not be put to death.” And Jonathan called David, and Jonathan reported to him all these things. And Jonathan brought David to Saul, and he was in his presence (AW)as before.

And there was war again. And David went out and fought with the Philistines and struck them with a great blow, so that they fled before him. (AX)Then a harmful spirit from the Lord came upon Saul, as he sat in his house with his spear in his hand. (AY)And David was playing the lyre. 10 (AZ)And Saul sought to pin David to the wall with the spear, but he eluded Saul, so that he struck the spear into the wall. And David fled and escaped that night.

11 (BA)Saul sent messengers to David's house to watch him, that he might kill him in the morning. But Michal, David's wife, told him, “If you do not escape with your life tonight, tomorrow you will be killed.” 12 (BB)So Michal let David down through the window, and he fled away and escaped. 13 Michal took (BC)an image[c] and laid it on the bed and put a pillow of goats' hair at its head and covered it with the clothes. 14 And when Saul sent messengers to take David, she said, “He is sick.” 15 Then Saul sent the messengers to see David, saying, “Bring him up to me in the bed, that I may kill him.” 16 And when the messengers came in, behold, (BD)the image was in the bed, with the pillow of goats' hair at its head. 17 Saul said to Michal, “Why have you deceived me thus and let my enemy go, so that he has escaped?” And Michal answered Saul, “He said to me, ‘Let me go. (BE)Why should I kill you?’”

18 Now David fled and escaped, and he came to Samuel at (BF)Ramah and told him all that Saul had done to him. And he and Samuel went and lived at Naioth. 19 And it was told Saul, “Behold, David is at Naioth in Ramah.” 20 Then Saul sent messengers to take David, and when they saw the company of the prophets prophesying, and Samuel standing as head over them, (BG)the Spirit of God came upon the messengers of Saul, (BH)and they also prophesied. 21 When it was told Saul, he sent other messengers, (BI)and they also prophesied. And Saul sent messengers again the third time, (BJ)and they also prophesied. 22 Then he himself went to Ramah and came to the great well that is in Secu. And he asked, “Where are Samuel and David?” And one said, “Behold, they are at Naioth in (BK)Ramah.” 23 And he went there to Naioth in Ramah. (BL)And the Spirit of God came upon him also, and as he went he prophesied until he came to Naioth in Ramah. 24 (BM)And he too stripped off his clothes, and he too prophesied before Samuel and lay naked all that day and all that night. Thus it is said, (BN)“Is Saul also among the prophets?”

John 8:31-59

The Truth Will Set You Free

31 So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, (A)“If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, 32 and you will (B)know the truth, and the truth (C)will set you free.” 33 They answered him, (D)“We are offspring of Abraham and have never been enslaved to anyone. How is it that you say, ‘You will become free’?”

34 Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, (E)everyone who practices sin is a slave[a] to sin. 35 (F)The slave does not remain in the house forever; (G)the son remains forever. 36 So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. 37 I know that you are offspring of Abraham; yet (H)you seek to kill me because my word finds no place in you. 38 (I)I speak of what I have seen with my Father, and you do what you have heard (J)from your father.”

You Are of Your Father the Devil

39 They answered him, (K)“Abraham is our father.” Jesus said to them, (L)“If you were Abraham's children, you would be doing the works Abraham did, 40 but now (M)you seek to kill me, a man who has told you the truth (N)that I heard from God. This is not what Abraham did. 41 You are doing the works your father did.” They said to him, (O)“We were not born of sexual immorality. We have (P)one Father—even God.” 42 Jesus said to them, (Q)“If God were your Father, you would love me, for (R)I came from God and (S)I am here. (T)I came not of my own accord, but (U)he sent me. 43 (V)Why do you not understand what I say? It is because you cannot (W)bear to hear my word. 44 (X)You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father's desires. (Y)He was a murderer from the beginning, and (Z)does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. (AA)When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies. 45 But because I tell the truth, you do not believe me. 46 Which one of you convicts me of sin? If I tell the truth, why do you not believe me? 47 (AB)Whoever is of God hears the words of God. (AC)The reason why you do not hear them is that (AD)you are not of God.”

Before Abraham Was, I Am

48 The Jews answered him, “Are we not right in saying that you are a Samaritan and (AE)have a demon?” 49 Jesus answered, “I do not have a demon, but (AF)I honor my Father, and you dishonor me. 50 Yet (AG)I do not seek my own glory; there is One who seeks it, and he is the judge. 51 Truly, truly, (AH)I say to you, if anyone keeps my word, he will never (AI)see death.” 52 The Jews said to him, “Now we know that you have a demon! (AJ)Abraham died, as did the prophets, yet (AK)you say, ‘If anyone keeps my word, he will never (AL)taste death.’ 53 (AM)Are you greater than our father Abraham, who died? And the prophets died! Who do you make yourself out to be?” 54 Jesus answered, (AN)“If I glorify myself, my glory is nothing. (AO)It is my Father who glorifies me, (AP)of whom you say, ‘He is our God.’[b] 55 But (AQ)you have not known him. (AR)I know him. If I were to say that I do not know him, I would be (AS)a liar (AT)like you, but I do know him and I keep his word. 56 (AU)Your father Abraham (AV)rejoiced (AW)that he would see my day. (AX)He saw it and was glad.” 57 So the Jews said to him, “You are not yet fifty years old, and have you seen Abraham?”[c] 58 Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, (AY)I am.” 59 So (AZ)they picked up stones to throw at him, but Jesus hid himself and went out of the temple.

Psalm 112

The Righteous Will Never Be Moved

112 [a] (A)Praise the Lord!
(B)Blessed is the man who fears the Lord,
who (C)greatly delights in his commandments!
His (D)offspring will be mighty in the land;
(E)the generation of the upright will be blessed.
(F)Wealth and riches are in his house,
and his (G)righteousness endures forever.
Light dawns in the darkness (H)for the upright;
he is gracious, merciful, and (I)righteous.
It is well with the man who (J)deals generously and lends;
who conducts his affairs with justice.
For the righteous will (K)never be moved;
(L)he will be remembered forever.
He is not (M)afraid of bad news;
his (N)heart is firm, (O)trusting in the Lord.
His heart is steady;[b] he will not be afraid,
until he looks in triumph on his adversaries.
He has (P)distributed freely; he has given to the poor;
his righteousness endures forever;
his (Q)horn is exalted in honor.
10 The wicked man sees it and is angry;
he (R)gnashes his teeth and (S)melts away;
(T)the desire of the wicked will perish!

Proverbs 15:12-14

12 (A)A scoffer (B)does not like to be reproved;
he will not go to the wise.
13 (C)A glad heart makes a cheerful face,
but by (D)sorrow of heart the spirit is (E)crushed.
14 (F)The heart of him who has understanding seeks knowledge,
but the mouths of fools feed on folly.

1 Samuel 17:1-18:4, John 8:21-30, Psalm 111: 1-10, Proverbs 15:11

Today is the 15th day of May welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I am Brian it is a joy to be here with you today as we end a week. Another one of the weeks has gone by that we get to share together the voyage across the year. And I guess, sometime about halfway through today will be the dead center of the month as we continue the journey. The journey right now has us in 1 Samuel as we read through the Old Testament. And we are squarely planted in the life of Israel’s 1st king Saul. We’ve also met this young, good looking boy named David and today the whole story is gonna change. And David…I’ve said David’s life and Saul’s life were intertwined from the time they met but it’s gonna be much more apparent. And some of these behaviors that we’ve been examining throughout this week as we look at Saul, and they are the same kinds of behaviors in ourselves and in our culture, well they’re gonna be exasperated because this kid, this little shepherd boy named David is about to become a national hero. So, we’re reading from the Voice this week, which is today. 1 Samuel chapter 17 verse 1 through 18 verse 4.

Prayer:

Father, we thank You for Your word. We…we…we earnestly thank You with deepest gratitude for bringing us through this week and every week, every week that we’ve traveled to this point. That we are breathing is a gift and we acknowledge that, and we thank You for bringing us this far into this year. And, so, Holy Spirit as we continue the journey, the journeys that we’ve been on through all the different stories, but the journeys that we are currently on in the monarchy with Saul and David and as we continue to move through the final gospel of John and hear Your words Jesus for the last time, at least in this form, from the scriptures this year we are grateful. And, so, we end this week and release it to You with a heart of gratitude. We are thankful and we are open, and we ask Holy Spirit that You would plant what we’ve learned and what we’ve heard into the soil of our lives, that we would cultivate it, that it might yield fruit for Your kingdom. We pray this in the name of Jesus. Amen.

Prayers and Encouragement:

Hi DAB this is Eva from Colorado Springs and I’m just calling to lift up the families with sexual abuse and marriages that are just in crisis. And I…I’m just praying for the Holy Spirit to surround you and to bring healing into your lives and to just bring supernatural…the needs that you need in whatever specific situation you’re in. God is bigger than out situation and it’s…it’s hard to see that sometimes but I know that He is. He’s been in our family. My now, ex-husband, there’s a situation with him and one of my daughters and there’s a court situation coming up in July that two of my daughters and myself have to testify for and I pray that God’s hand would be in that and that justice would prevail, and God’s will would ultimately win and that my daughter would see that God does what is right and good and that God is over all of it. Thank you all for praying for me and for praying for each other in Jesus’ name.

Yes, I’d like to pray, I believe her name was Pathfinder, the lady that’s getting ready to see her mother. I just want to pray for you. Lord, I just pray that You’d be with her Lord God, that You would guide her, that You would put a watch over her mouth Father God. It is so easy for us to throw our opinions on other people, Father God. And I just pray that You would give her a time of peace with her mother, that all those things wouldn’t matter, opinions, likes, dislikes, Lord that they would just not matter at all during this time and that You would just heal this…this relationship Father God. We are so different, we are so selfish, and sometimes we want our way instead of Your way, Father. And I just pray that You would lead and direct her Lord, that she would see Your way in this situation. I pray Father Lord God, that You would just give her the ability to show her mother light and that light is You. And I just thank You Jesus for leading us and guiding our path and just ministering through us. In Jesus’ name.

Hi Daily Audio Bible I’m calling because I would like to thank the girl who prayed the other day for people who are coming out of this season of COVID and are watching so many people getting married and starting families and launching their lives and are still in the waiting and are still waiting on God. And as I was…that prayer was for me. I’m getting older…I’m…I’ve been newly single for 7 months now and I just cannot fight this desire that God’s placed on my heart. And just struggling with patience and struggling with His timing and His will. And I just…I could use prayers specifically for myself as I’m navigating this new world, these new waters. And I…I just kinda…I’m just on my own. I need prayer that I can feel complete in God because I just don’t right now. And it did help though to hear that prayer because I felt like it just…it just hit me as that’s…that’s me. So, thank you so much for anyone who listens, and I appreciate your prayer.

Hi DAB family, I’m Jasmine calling from Virginia. I’m 15 years old and I just want to share 1 thing I’ve heard, and I learned today listening to the podcast. So, Brian had said we don’t have to hide in the baggage we can step forward. So, that reminded me of something I heard on Sunday where it said that there’s no need to worry about what others think of you because at the end of the day the only one who can judge you who created you and knows you best is the Lord. So, I just wanted to encourage people, you guys out there to just own up to that as I try to own up that myself. And, yeah, I love you.

Good morning, my family DABbers. I was listening to the May 11th broadcast and today is actually the 12th but I listened to a lady who was going to visit her mother and I could so relate to everything she had to say. And I just wanted to tell you I lost my sweet mother the day after Mother’s Day May 10th just a couple days ago. And I flew down from my state of Michigan to Florida to be with her the week before she passed - 89. The day before she died on Mother’s Day, she…I was holding her cold hands and she said to me “I love you so much, I love you so much” and she had dementia and…but she had clarity and I can’t tell you how much that meant to me because I too struggled with my relationship. And I just want to encourage you and others out there, life is precious. My mother’s home with Jesus now and I have peace in my heart but spend…spend the time with your mother doing what you say. Guard your words and pray. God will give you the wisdom and He’ll wrap His arms around you as well. God Bless you. I love all the DABbers. I listen every day. So thankful for this broadcast. Have a good day.

Olivia, I can’t remember…have I pressed submit on my first one. This is God’s Smile here. So, I’m gonna start all over again. Forgive me. I want to share with you about Peter and I. I was a young Christian and I’d just come to the Lord and I was very lonely, living alone and suicidal and I asked the Lord for somebody to love me. Little did I know that God’s love was there for me at that time. But he understood. I didn’t pray for a husband, but He gave me Peter. And Peter wasn’t a Christian. And as time go on and we got closer I became aware that I wanted him to be…to know Christ. And one night I was talking to the Lord and I said, “Father if I…I have to choose between you or Peter, it’s You I choose Lord above all else, it’s You. I want You in my life.” And I didn’t want to give Peter up. I wrote him a letter, I bought him a bible, and, in that letter, I told him I loved him and if he wasn’t in my life at some point then these were the verses to lead him to Christ. Well, I gave him this and Peter came to Lord very soon after and so did his mom. I believe in the surrender to Christ giving Peter up for…for God, that He released Peter to me. I don’t know what He’s going to do with you, but I believe if you surrender and listen to the wisdom of other callers, He will bless you and keep you and show you the way you should go. Love, God’s Smile, kiss, kiss. Muah, muah, muah, muah.

The Daily Audio Bible Reading for Saturday May 15, 2021 (NIV)

1 Samuel 17:1-18:4

17 Now the Philistines had gathered an army for battle at Socoh, which is in the land of Judah, and they pitched their tents in Ephes-dammim between Socoh and Azekah. Unwilling to allow another Philistine invasion of their nation, Saul and the forces of Israel went out against them. They camped in the valley of Elah and formed ranks against the Philistines. The Philistines stood on one mountain and the Israelites on another, with the valley between them.

Then a champion emerged from the Philistine camp, Goliath of Gath (one of the five capital cities in the Philistine confederation), who was over nine feet tall.[a] He wore a bronze helmet and a chain-mail coat that weighed more than 100 pounds of bronze. His legs were protected by bronze shin guards, and he had a bronze javelin slung between his shoulders, ready to throw. The shaft of his spear was as thick as a weaver’s beam, the iron head of his spear weighed 20 pounds, and his shield-bearer went ahead of him. He was a fearsome sight.

Goliath stood and shouted to the watching Israelites.

Goliath: Why have you come to fight us? Am I not a Philistine, a warrior for a powerful empire? And don’t you serve Saul, your so-called king? Choose yourselves a champion, and send him out to me. If he kills me when we fight, then we will serve you; but if I defeat him and kill him, then you will serve us. 10 Today I challenge the entire army of Israel: send me someone to fight!

11 When Saul and his army heard the Philistine’s words, they were shocked and frightened.

No one compares physically to Goliath. A hand-to-hand battle would be a slaughter, and the Philistines would conquer Israel anyway. Who can save them?

12 David was the son of Jesse, an Ephrathite from Bethlehem in Judah who had eight sons. At this time, Jesse was already an old man. 13 Jesse’s three oldest sons, Eliab (the firstborn), Abinadab (the second), and Shammah (the third) had gone with Saul to the battlefield. 14 David was the youngest son; and while the three oldest went with Saul, 15 he went back and forth between Saul’s battle and his father’s sheep in Bethlehem taking provisions to the troops and bringing word from the front line.

16 For 40 days this Philistine giant, Goliath of Gath, stepped forward, challenging the men of Israel every morning and evening. But no one was brave enough to accept the challenge.

Jesse (to his son David): 17 Take ⅗ of a bushel of roasted grain and these 10 loaves of bread to your brothers in the camp. 18 Also take these 10 blocks of cheese to the commander of their company. See how your brothers are doing, and bring me some word from them. 19 Saul, your brothers, and all the men of Israel are arrayed in the valley of Elah fighting against the Philistines.

The story of David and Goliath is one that has grown in popular attention, and many people who have never read the Bible know it as a simple story of the underdog defeating the favored warrior. Although there is another story of how David is noticed by the king (when he was brought to Saul’s court to play his music), in this story, David comes to the king’s attention as God’s warrior, contrasting Saul in almost every way. A mere boy, David doesn’t trust in his own strength or in armor or in fancy weapons. David places his trust in God, and his courage comes from belief that God can use him, as small as he is compared to his opponent, because God is all-powerful.

20 David rose early the next morning, left the sheep in the care of another, took the provisions, and obeyed Jesse’s instructions. David reached the camp just as the army was lining up and shouting its war cries. 21 Both Israel and the Philistines prepared to fight against each other. 22 David left the provisions with the person in charge of baggage; he ran to the front lines and shoved his way through the soldiers to greet his brothers. 23 As David talked with them, Goliath, the Philistine champion from Gath, emerged again and shouted his challenge to the men of Israel. This time young David heard his words.

24 When they saw Goliath, all the Israelites were frightened and retreated from him.

Soldiers: 25 Have you seen this man who steps forward? He’s trying to taunt Israel. Our king will reward the man who kills him with wealth, a royal marriage, and freedom for his entire family from taxation and obligations in Israel.

David (asking those around him): 26 What is the reward for removing this insult from Israel by killing this man? No uncircumcised Philistine can get away with taunting the armies of the living God!

Soldiers: 27 You’ve heard what will be given to the man who kills him. We were just talking about it.

28 David’s oldest brother, Eliab, overheard this conversation and became angry with David.

Eliab: Why have you come down here? Who is watching your tiny flock in the wilderness? I’m your brother, and I know you—you’re arrogant, and your heart is evil. You’ve come to watch the battle as if it were just entertainment.

David: 29 What have I done now? I was just asking a question.

30 David ignored him and asked another soldier the same question, and the people gave him the same answer. 31 When news of David’s valiant words reached the king, Saul sent for David.

David (to Saul): 32 Don’t let anyone be frightened because of that man. I am your servant, and I will go and fight with him.

Saul: 33 Don’t be ridiculous—you can’t fight the Philistine. You’re only a youth, and he has been a warrior since his childhood. You lack age and experience.

David: 34 I work as a shepherd for my father. Whenever a lion or a bear has come and attacked one of my lambs, 35 I have gone after it and struck it down to rescue the lamb from the predator’s mouth; if it turned to attack me, I would take it by the chin, beat it, and kill it. 36 I have killed both a lion and a bear; and as your servant I will kill this uncircumcised Philistine, too, since he has dared to taunt the armies of the living God.

37 The Eternal One, who saved me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear, will save me from the hand of this Philistine.

Saul: Go then, and may the Eternal One be with you!

38 So Saul outfitted David in the king’s own armor: a bronze helmet to protect his head and a coat of mail to protect his chest. 39 David strapped on Saul’s sword outside the armor and then discovered he could not move because he was not used to the restrictions of the weighty armor.

David: I’m not used to these things. How can I attack an enemy when I can’t even walk? So he removed every bit of Saul’s armor. He would fight the Philistine as he had fought those lions and bears.

40 He took his staff in his hand and went to the stream to choose five smooth stones, which he kept in a pouch in his shepherd’s bag. He had his sling ready as he approached the Philistine.

41 The Philistine, with his shield-bearer in front of him, came closer to David. 42 When he saw that David was only a healthy and handsome boy, Goliath’s eyes filled with contempt.

Goliath: 43 Am I a dog that you come to beat me with a stick?

And he cursed David, invoking the names of his Philistine gods.

Goliath: 44 Come here, and I will feed your flesh to the birds of the air and the wild animals of the fields.

David: 45 You come to me carrying a sword and spear and javelin as your weapons, but I come armed with the name of the Eternal One, the Commander of heavenly armies, the True God of the armies of Israel, the One you have insulted. 46 This very day, the Eternal One will give you into my hands. I will strike you down and cut off your head, and I will feed the birds of the air and the wild animals of the fields with the flesh of your Philistine warriors. Then all the land will know the True God is with Israel, 47 and all of those gathered here will know that the Eternal One does not save by sword and spear. The battle is the Eternal One’s, and He will give you into our hands.

48 When the Philistine stood up and approached, David ran toward the line of battle to meet him. 49 As quick as a flash, he reached into his bag, put a stone in his sling, and launched it at the Philistine, hitting him in the head. The stone sank deeply into his forehead, and the Philistine fell face-first onto the ground.

50 That was how David defeated the Philistine with only a sling and a single stone, striking him down, ending his life without a sword in his hand.

David’s victory over Goliath sets in motion the rest of the story. The army of Israel wins a great victory over the panicked Philistines after David strikes down their champion, and David is elevated in the eyes of all (and soon will become Saul’s leading general). But the seeds of the ongoing struggle between Saul and David are also sown on this day, as the people celebrate the good-looking boy’s valor and heroism, filling Saul with jealousy. Soon Saul is thinking that David has everything but the kingdom’s throne, and he turns on the boy who has saved his people. Their war destroys Saul and complicates David’s life and eventual rule.

51 Then David ran to the Philistine and stood over his lifeless body. He pulled the man’s sword from its scabbard and finished him by cutting off his head.

When the Philistines saw that their champion was dead, they knew they would be next, so they ran away. 52 The people of Israel and Judah gave a great shout and chased the Philistines the length of the valley[b] and back to the gates of Ekron; and Philistines wounded in the battle fell all along the five miles of the Shaaraim Way, which ran between the Philistine capital cities of Gath and Ekron. 53 Then the Israelites turned back from chasing the Philistines and plundered the Philistine camps.

54 As the sons of Israel were distributing the spoils from the battle, David took the Philistine’s head and went to Jerusalem, but he kept the man’s armor and other possessions back in his own tent.

55 Earlier in the day, as David was choosing his stones and bravely approaching the Philistine, Saul asked his cousin Abner, who was general of the army, where David came from.

Saul: Abner, who is that young man’s father?

Abner: I swear to you, my king, I don’t know.

Saul: 56 Well, find out who his father is.

57 When David returned from killing the Philistine, Abner brought him in front of Saul holding the head of the Philistine.

Saul: 58 Who is your father, young man?

David: I am the son of your servant Jesse of Bethlehem.

18 By the time David had finished speaking to Saul, Saul’s son Jonathan was bound to David in friendship, and Jonathan loved David as he loved himself. Saul took David into his service on that day and would not let him return to his father’s home. And Jonathan made a covenant with David because he loved him as he loved himself. He took off the robe he wore and gave it to David, and also his armor, sword, bow, and belt, symbolically transferring to David his right to ascend the throne.

John 8:21-30

Jesus (to the crowds): 21 I am leaving this place, and you will look for Me and die in your sin. For where I am going, you are unable to come.

Jews: 22 Is He suicidal? He keeps saying, “Where I am going, you are unable to come.”

Jesus: 23 You originate from the earth below, and I have come from the heavens above. You are from this world, and I am not. 24 That’s why I told you that you will die here as a result of your sins. Unless you believe I am who I have said I am, your sins will lead to your death.

Jews: 25 Who exactly are You?

Jesus: From the beginning of My mission, I have been telling you who I am. 26 I have so much to say about you, so many judgments to render; but if you hear one thing, hear that the One who sent Me is true, and all the things I have heard from Him I speak into the world.

27 The people had not understood that Jesus was teaching about the Father.

Jesus: 28 Whenever the day comes and you lift up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am He. It will be clear then that I am not acting alone, but that I am speaking the things I have learned directly from the Father. 29 The One who sent Me is with Me; He has not abandoned Me because I always do what pleases Him.

30 As Jesus was speaking, many in the crowd believed in Him.

1 Samuel 15:1-16:23, John 8:1-20, Psalm 110: 1-7, Proverbs 15:8-10

Today is the 14th day of May welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I am Brian it is great to be here with you today, truly, truly great. How are you? How is everybody? I love that we can come around this Global Campfire together and just let the fire light just kind of shine on our faces and let the fire of the Holy Spirit come within us and lead us into all truths through His word. It is a beautiful thing that we can do this and so I’m glad to be here for the next step. And that next step leads us back into 1 Samuel where we’re getting to know King Saul, Israel’s 1st king. Today, we’re gonna meet somebody, somebody that we’ve been getting to know through their work in the book of Psalms. We’re actually gonna meet this person in the narrative story today and his name is David. And once David and Saul meet, their lives will be intertwined in some profound ways that will…that change them both. So, let’s dive in. We’re reading from the Voice Translation this week. 1 Samuel chapters 15 and 16.

Commentary:

Okay. So, we kind of saw the last straw in Saul’s reign. He disobeyed God. He was sent by God to…to attack the Amalekites who had given the Israelites problems on their way through the desert. They were being sent to bring judgement upon the Amalekites not to enrich themselves. So, they weren’t supposed to take anything. Nothing was to be taken as like pillage or booty or whatever. So, basically this is the same kind of commands that…that Joshua was given when they were settling in the land. This was what they were commanded to do. And we remember Jericho and we remember Akin, who he couldn’t keep his hands off some of the stuff that he took, and it caused a bunch of problems including Akin losing his life. So, Saul is sent with the same kind of command and he essentially disobeys in the same kind of way. And then when he’s confronted by Samuel, he does a bunch of back-peddling “well I didn’t really take all of the sheep and stuff the people did, they did that, they did it to sacrifice, it was all for sacrifice. I just kept King Agag alive, etc. etc.” like he’s doing all this side stepping and back-peddling and diverting blame, all the kind of stuff that we probably are all too familiar with in our own lives and in…in…in our own culture like surrounding us. plausible deniability. But Samuel see’s right through it and he’s having none of it and he informs Saul that the kingdom has been taken from him. That’s gonna take some time. That’s not gonna…like Saul doesn’t just go “okay, okay, I’ve sinned against the Lord, I resign, where do I sign? Here’s my crown, give it to whoever you please.” Like, that’s not how it’s gonna go. It’s gonna take some time. But God has spoken, and Samuel’s gonna leave and Saul’s gonna be humiliated again in front of everybody because Samuel won’t go worship God with him. And, so, Saul’s like, “would you just…would you just go worship with me? Like, don’t leave me here in front of all these people. Would you come and make it look better?” And…and we just see so much of how Saul is committed to the imaging of a thing than a reality of a thing and how weak of a leader that makes him. But we also met David today. And now David is an armor bearer for the king and a musician for the king to calm him down. And, so, their stories are intertwined, and they will remain intertwined, like I said at the beginning, in some really interesting and dramatic ways.

Prayer:

Father, once again we thank You for Your word and we thank You for navigating us through another week. And as we move through this territory this week in the life of the 1st king Saul, we have plenty that we’ve been challenged with. It’s like we can see these behaviors in the narrative of Saul, we can see these kinds of behaviors in other people, but it takes time to slow down and by Your Spirit so that they can be revealed in us. Sometimes we are the least self-aware. As selfish as we can be, we can also be very much not self-aware not in any way understanding the impact that we have on others. Saul’s story gives us kind of a…almost a 360-degree view of the situation. And, so, come Holy Spirit and we invite You. It is our desire; it is our deep desire to walk with You. There is no one more important. There is nothing more important. So, come Holy Spirit and lead us into all truth transforming us into the image of our Savior, Jesus, we ask in His name. Amen.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Hi, it’s Big Hearted Ben and Radiant Rachel and we are going to be praying for Angel Heart. My mom isn’t by I am. I’m praying to, with you. Yeah, see. __ Dear Jesus, please help Angel Heart to not…to not…not know what’s going on and for her…he to speak when she wants to and not for when she doesn’t have to take a breath she stops speaking. Please help her to have all the things that go…go bad to go away to cast those demons away into the pit of fire and…and never come back, never come back ever again, in this world. In the name of Jesus, Amen. Amen. Bye.

Hi V from Illinois this is Bonnie from Virginia. I heard your prayer request. It reminded me about my own life, my husband leaving me when I was 4 months pregnant for my son and I already had a 4-year-old daughter. My husband returned after 5 months almost when I was…the time to give delivery to my son. But he returned because his gall bladder was swollen, and it was almost going to burst, and he did not have money to…to treat himself. So, I helped him to receive the treatment. And I did not have anyone to support me. I was legally blind, but my husband was able to see, and I was totally an orphan with no family support besides my own income at teaching or a teacher in elementary school. But I trusted in God and leaned on Him every day. And we started living together after his return. We came to America and again he started showing his attitude. So, we got separated again in America. I had my 11-year-old daughter and 7-year-old son. New country, no family support, but just trusting in God I was able to make it. My son is 23-years-old now and my daughter is almost 27 and she is…

Peggy in Texas and I do need community, I need support. I turned to the DAB family asking for prayer for my 15-year-old grandson. He is so rebellious, so angry, confrontational, he’s hurting, and his God…God-fearing parents don’t know what to do and where to turn at this point. He’s…he’s lying. School is difficult. He’s been diagnosed with ADD, he’s on Riddelliine the drug. His behavior seems to be at the point where his parents are…are wondering what to do and where to turn and…and should he be sent to a school to a place where he could be disciplined. I don’t know. And they’ve asked, you know, would that cause more rejection in his life. As a grandmother or the grandmother, I’m asking…I’m asking the DAB family to pray with me. I feel alone in this. I…easy to turn to the Lord but I need support at this point. And, so, if you will pray with me, I would deeply appreciate it. If you’ll pray that the hold of the enemy will be broken as we pray for wisdom for his parents and…and for this child. And I’m open for whatever advice you have for this grandmother. I thank you for being there. Thank you. May the Lord bless each one. May have His will in our lives. Thank you.

This is Cindy from Minnesota and I’m calling to…specifically about Sam who had called in about her residency coming up and just feeling resentful that she has to leave her child. And I just wanted to encourage you first of all that I’ve been praying for you and asking God to give you wisdom. And also, just to share that my daughter through no choice of her own has had to become a single mom and she has had to…her heart’s desire also was to be a stay-at-home-mom and she’s not able to do that either. And she…she…just I’ve seen God really work in wonderful ways. I am her…her nanny so I help take care of my granddaughter and then we make it so that I’m there so that, you know, her daughter can come and eat lunch with her or there’s just little things that she does during the day to connect with her daughter to make it better. And I…I just really wanted to encourage you cause I think your hearts really in the right place wanting to be home with your child and that’s…that’s good and sometimes circumstances come along that don’t allow us do that. But I’m…I’m just praying for you and praying that God gives you the wisdom to know what to do next.

Good Morning Daily Audio Bible family. I’d like to call myself The Prodigal Son because I’ve fallen away from the gospel’s countless times and yet I’m still drawn by…by the love which is shared every single day on this platform at Daily Audio Bible. And today, the 11th of…of May I think the reading that Brian put forth actually made me to go down deep in my heart. You know I am someone who is filled with a lot of grief from loss of my parents and then sometimes my…my savings, which each time I want to do something for food it…I just find myself at the starting point. And sometimes due to these unresolved conflicts in my heart, when I get into, you know, an argument or sometimes when someone, you know, wants to talk to you, you know, the way I respond is somewhat different. And this is what I’ve been growing through for quite some time now. And the lesson today just…just took me to a moment of, you know, going through my thoughts in the past and in as much as I need help, I really needed to hear it. I…I really needed to…to understand that sometimes these unresolved conflicts in me actually puts enough anger and sometimes I fix the relationship that I have with people who are close to me, people who can put forth good ideas and that changed my life. So, Brian, I thank you for today. And I also want to reach out to every single person going through a difficult moment in your life be it emotional struggles, I just want you to know there is a place for you in this family.

Dear Tamika from Pennsylvania, it’s Susan from Canada, God’s Yellow Flower calling, and I hear your brokenness. It sounds to me like you are at rock bottom and you don’t know where to go or even how to look up. The mountain before you is so steep and so high it seems insurmountable. But I’m praying that God will lift you up out of that pit and help you to sore as eagle’s wings with Him. Knowing He is God, and He loves you so dearly. I pray dear Lord for You to provide for Tamika. Provide her with a job, provide her with a home and bring her children back to her. Dear Lord, I don’t know how You’re going to do it, but I pray dear God that You would, that You would take her into Your arms and just heal her brokenness and fill her with Your Spirit of love, peace, goodness and all the other fruits of the Spirit. Lord God, let Your presences be felt by her at this very moment wherever she’s at, Your presence that brings peace. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

The Daily Audio Bible Reading for Friday May 14, 2021 (NIV)

1 Samuel 15-16

15 Samuel (to Saul): 1-2 Because the Eternal One sent me to anoint you as ruler over His people Israel, listen to what the Eternal One, the Commander of heavenly armies, has to say: “I will punish Amalek because they waylaid Israel in her path out of Egypt. I want you to go down against Amalek and destroy them, everything they have. Do not allow anything to survive; destroy them all—man and woman, child and infant, ox and sheep, camel and donkey.”

Although Saul is given great victories, God rejects him, regretting that Saul was ever chosen as king. Several reasons are given for why Saul was judged for listening to his own counsel rather than trusting in God’s. First he takes the priest’s role as his own and carries out a ritual sacrifice. Later his hungry soldiers break the dietary regulations from the law of Moses by devouring meat and blood together. Finally Saul does not destroy every aspect of the Amalekite kingdom as God commanded.

So Saul gathered his forces, and at Telaim he counted them: 200,000 foot soldiers with 10,000 men from Judah. He approached the city of Amalek and set an ambush in the valley there. From there he sent a message to the Kenite people.

Message from Saul: Get out! Be gone! You showed kindness to the people of Israel when they came out of Egypt. Get away from among the Amalekites, or I will be forced to destroy you with them.

So the Kenites left their homes among the Amalekites. Then Saul attacked the Amalekites from Havilah all the way to Shur, east of Egypt. He cut down the entire population with the sword, as God had told him to do, except he captured King Agag of the Amalekites and kept him alive. Saul and the army spared Agag, and they saved the best of the livestock: the sheep, the oxen, the lambs, and the best of all the stock. They kept what was valuable instead of destroying it, and they only destroyed those things they considered worthless.

10 Then Samuel heard the voice of the Eternal.

Eternal One: 11 I regret that I made Saul king over Israel because he has turned away from Me and from executing My commands.

What do we make of this idea that God has changed His mind? Classical theologians (Augustine and Aquinas, particularly) believed that God is unchangeable, above all such petty things as regret, anger, and sorrow, although His actions sometimes seem as though God feels such things. More contemporary theologians suggest that God can change His mind as His purpose is being worked out through the actions of human beings. In either case, what we see here is God seeking someone who will act as His regent and do exactly as He says—and clearly, Saul is no longer capable of being that person.

Samuel was distressed when he heard this, and he cried out to the Eternal One all night long.

Samuel feels terrible about what is going to happen, and he spends the night weeping. This reaction makes Samuel’s conversation with Saul that much more powerful—what sorrow and anger Samuel must be feeling as he is laying down the law to this young king he anointed with his own hands. This tragic twist in the story of Saul develops because he has failed to live up to God’s requirements, so God decides that His chosen king will not remain on the throne.

12 Then he rose early in the morning to go and find Saul, only to hear that Saul had gone on to Carmel, where he had erected a monument to himself, and returned to Gilgal. 13 At last Samuel caught up with Saul. When Saul saw him, he greeted him as if nothing was wrong.

Saul (to Samuel): May you be blessed by the Eternal One. I have carried out His commands.

Samuel: 14 Then why do I hear the sounds of sheep and cattle?

Saul: 15 They brought the best of the Amalekites’ sheep and cattle to sacrifice to the Eternal One your God. But we destroyed all the rest as we were told.

Samuel: 16 That’s enough. Stop talking, and let me tell you what the Eternal told me last night.

Saul: Go ahead, I’m listening.

Samuel: 17 Don’t you remember when you didn’t amount to much in your own sight, but you were made the leader of the tribes of Israel? Wasn’t it the Eternal One who anointed you king over them? 18 The Eternal One sent you on a mission, commanding you, “Go and destroy the Amalekites, who are sinners. Fight them until they are completely destroyed.”

19 Why didn’t you obey the voice of the Eternal One? Why did you grab the spoils of battle, doing what the Eternal considers evil?

Saul (defending himself): 20 I did what the Eternal One instructed. As He commanded, I went on the mission and decimated all the Amalekites, and I have brought back Agag, their king. 21 It was the people who took the sheep and cattle from the spoil that would have been devoted to destruction and brought them back to sacrifice to the Eternal One, your True God, in Gilgal.

22 Samuel: Does the Eternal One delight in sacrifices and burnt offerings
as much as in perfect obedience to His voice?
Be certain of this: that obedience is better than sacrifice;
to heed His voice is better than offering the fat of rams.
23 Rebellion is as much a sin as fortune-telling,
and willfulness is as wicked as worshiping strange gods.
Because you have rejected His commands,
He has rejected you as king.

Saul: 24 I have sinned. I disobeyed the voice of the Eternal One and your instructions because I was afraid of the people. I listened to their counsel instead of yours. 25 So now, please pardon my sin, and return with me so that I can worship the Eternal.

Samuel: 26 I will not return with you. Because you have rejected the voice of the Eternal One, He has rejected your claims to rule Israel. He is through with you.

27 As Samuel turned to go, Saul knelt to the ground, caught the prophet’s robe, and held on so tight that it tore.

Samuel: 28 Today the Eternal One has torn the kingdom of Israel from you to give to your neighbor, who is a better man than you. 29 The One who is the Glory of Israel will not recant or change His mind, for He is not like some mortal being who changes his mind.

Saul: 30 I have sinned. But please, do me this honor in front of the elders of Israel and all the people. Come back with me so that I may worship the Eternal One, your True God.

31 So Samuel returned with Saul, and Saul worshiped the Eternal One. Samuel then completed what Saul had begun.

Samuel: 32 Bring me Agag, king of the Amalekites.

Agag was led to him, being cautiously optimistic that the worst was surely past.

Samuel: 33 Just as your sword has taken children from women, so will this sword make your mother a childless woman.

So Samuel chopped Agag into pieces before the Eternal One at Gilgal. 34 Then Samuel went back to Ramah, and Saul returned to his house in Gibeah of Saul.

35 Samuel never saw Saul again until the day he died. The prophet grieved over the hapless king. And the Eternal grieved, too, regretting that He had ever anointed Saul king over Israel.

16 Eternal One (to Samuel): How long will you mourn over Saul? I have rejected him as king over My people Israel. Now take your horn, fill it with oil, and depart. I have selected a new king for Me from among the sons of Jesse of Bethlehem.

The Lord has yet another mission for Samuel.

Samuel: How can I do that? If Saul hears I am anointing a new king, he will kill me!

Eternal One: Take a heifer with you, and say, “I have come to sacrifice to the Eternal One.” Invite Jesse to that sacrifice, and when he arrives, I will show you what to do. You will anoint for Me the one I show to you.

Samuel did as the Eternal One had told him, and he went to Bethlehem. The elders of the city came out to him, unsure of what business he had there.

Elders (trembling): Do you come in peace?

Samuel: Yes, in peace. I have come to sacrifice to the Eternal One. Sanctify yourselves, and come with me to the sacrifice.

And Samuel consecrated Jesse and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice as well. When they came, he noticed the eldest son, Eliab.

Samuel (to himself): Surely this is the one the Eternal One will anoint.

Eternal One (to Samuel): Take no notice of his looks or his height. He is not the one, for the Eternal One does not pay attention to what humans value. Humans only care about the external appearance, but the Eternal considers the inner character.

Jesse called his son Abinadab and brought him to Samuel. Samuel looked at him.

Samuel: The Eternal has not chosen him either.

Then Jesse brought his son Shammah in front of Samuel.

Samuel: The Eternal has not chosen him either.

10 Jesse walked seven of his sons in front of Samuel, and each time, Samuel refused them because the Eternal One had chosen none of them.

Samuel (to Jesse): 11 Are all your sons here?

Jesse: All but the youngest. He is off keeping the sheep.

Samuel: Send for him, and bring him here. We will not sit down until he arrives.

12 Jesse sent for the youngest son, David, and he came in front of Samuel. He was a handsome boy, with a healthy complexion and bright eyes.

Eternal One: Rise and anoint him, because this is the one.

13 Then Samuel took the horn filled with olive oil and anointed him in the presence of his brothers, and the Spirit of the Eternal fell strongly on David and remained from that day on. Samuel then left for Ramah.

14 The Spirit of the Eternal left Saul, and an evil spirit sent from the Eternal One tormented him. 15 Saul’s servants saw this.

Servants (to Saul): Look, an evil spirit from God is terrorizing you. 16 Let our lord command that his servants find someone skillful on the harp, so that when this evil spirit from God is bothering you, he will play and ease your mind.

Saul (to his servants): 17 I agree. Find someone who can play well, and bring him here to me.

One of the younger men there spoke up.

A Young Servant: 18 I know someone, one of the sons of Jesse of Bethlehem, who plays skillfully and who is a man of courage, a warrior, sensible in what he says, and handsome; and the Eternal One is surely with him.

19 So Saul dispatched messengers to Jesse.

Saul’s Message: Send your son David, who is watching your flocks, to me. Your king needs his service.

20 So Jesse did as his king commanded. He sent Saul a young goat and a donkey loaded down with bread and a skin of wine by his son David. 21 David came to Saul and served him. The king loved him greatly and made David his armor-bearer. 22 Then he sent a message to Jesse.

Saul’s Message: David has impressed me. Please allow him to remain here in my service.

23 Whenever God allowed the evil spirit to afflict Saul, David would play the harp, Saul would be relieved of his torment, and the evil spirit would depart.

John 8:1-20

Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. He awoke early in the morning to return to the temple. When He arrived, the people surrounded Him, so He sat down and began to teach them. While He was teaching, the scribes and Pharisees brought in a woman who was caught in the act of adultery; and they stood her before Jesus.

Pharisees: Teacher, this woman was caught in the act of adultery. Moses says in the law that we are to kill such women by stoning. What do You say about it?

This was all set up as a test for Jesus; His answers would give them grounds to accuse Him of crimes against Moses’ law. Jesus bent over and wrote something in the dirt with His finger. They persisted in badgering Jesus, so He stood up straight.

Jesus: Let the first stone be thrown by the one among you who has not sinned.

Once again Jesus bent down to the ground and resumed writing with His finger. The Pharisees who heard Him stood still for a few moments and then began to leave slowly, one by one, beginning with the older men. Eventually only Jesus and the woman remained, 10 and Jesus looked up.

Jesus: Dear woman, where is everyone? Are we alone? Did no one step forward to condemn you?

Woman Caught in Adultery: 11 Lord, no one has condemned me.

Jesus: Well, I do not condemn you either; all I ask is that you go and from now on avoid the sins that plague you.][a]

12 On another occasion, Jesus spoke to the crowds again.

Jesus: I am the light that shines through the cosmos; if you walk with Me, you will thrive in the nourishing light that gives life and will not know darkness.

Pharisees: 13 Jesus, what You are claiming about Yourself cannot possibly be true. The only person bearing witness is You.

Jesus: 14 Even if I am making bold claims about Myself—who I am, what I have come to do—I am speaking the truth. You see, I know where I came from and where I will go when I am done here. You know neither where I come from nor where I will go. 15 You spend your time judging by the wrong criteria, by human standards; but I am not here to judge anyone. 16 If I were to judge, then My judgment would be based on truth; but I would not judge anyone alone. I act in harmony with the One who sent Me. 17 Your law states that if the testimonies of two witnesses agree, their testimony is true. 18 Well, I testify about Myself, and so does the Father who sent Me here.

Pharisees: 19 Where is the Father who testifies on Your behalf?

Jesus: You don’t know the Father or Me. If you knew Me, then you would also know the Father.

20 Jesus said all of these things in the treasury while He was teaching in the temple; followers and opponents alike gathered to hear Him, but none of His enemies tried to seize Him because His time had not yet come.

Psalm 110

Psalm 110

A song of David.

Psalm 110 may have been written to celebrate the coronation of one of David’s sons as king. The Eternal invites the royal son of David to take his rightful place at His right hand, the place of power and authority—not just over Jerusalem but over his enemies as well. But the royal son is to be more than a king, he is to be a priest according the order of that mysterious and enigmatic figure, Melchizedek (Genesis 14:17-24). God promises to give this royal priest-king victory over his enemies as he marches out to war.

This psalm is the psalm most quoted by early Christian writers in the New Testament. As they considered the significance of Jesus, they found that this psalm, more than any, expressed their conviction that the risen Jesus now occupies a unique place at God’s right hand and will be victorious over His enemies.

The Eternal said to my lord,
“Sit here at My right hand,
in the place of honor and power,
And I will gather your enemies together,
lead them in on hands and knees;
you will rest your feet on their backs.”

The Eternal will extend your reach as you rule
from your throne on Zion.
You will be out in enemy lands, ruling.
Your people will come as volunteers that day; they will be a sight to see:
on that day, you will lead your army, noble in their holiness.
As the new day dawns and dew settles on the grass,
your young volunteers will make their way to you.
The Eternal has sworn an oath
and cannot change His mind:
“You are a priest forever—
in the honored order of Melchizedek.”

The lord is at Your right hand;
on the day that his fury comes to its peak, he will crush kings.
You will see the dead in heaps at the roadside,
corpses spread far and wide in valleys and on hillsides.
Rulers and military leaders will lie among them without distinction.
This will be his judgment on the nations.
There is a brook along the way.
He will stop there and drink;
And when he is finished,
he will raise his head.

Proverbs 15:8-10

When the wicked offer sacrifices, they disgust the Eternal,
but the prayers of those who do right are a pleasure to Him.
The lifestyle of the wicked is repulsive to Him,
while those who do right delight Him.
10 Harsh punishment is waiting for those who reject the path of life,
and those who hate correction will die.
