The Daily Audio Bible Reading for Tuesday December 8, 2020 (NIV)

Hosea 10-14

10 (A)Israel is a luxuriant vine
that yields its fruit.
The more his fruit increased,
(B)the more altars he built;
as his country improved,
he improved his pillars.
Their heart is false;
now they must bear their guilt.
The Lord[a] will break down their altars
and destroy their pillars.

For now they will say:
(C)“We have no king,
for we do not fear the Lord;
and a king—what could he do for us?”
They utter (D)mere words;
with empty[b] oaths they make covenants;
so (E)judgment springs up like poisonous weeds
(F)in the furrows of the field.
The inhabitants of Samaria tremble
for (G)the calf[c] of (H)Beth-aven.
Its people mourn for it, and so do its idolatrous priests—
those who rejoiced over it and (I)over its glory—
for it has departed[d] from them.
(J)The thing itself shall be carried to Assyria
as tribute to (K)the great king.[e]
Ephraim shall be put to shame,
and Israel shall be ashamed (L)of his idol.[f]

(M)Samaria's king shall perish
like a twig on the face of the waters.
The high places of (N)Aven, (O)the sin of Israel,
shall be destroyed.
(P)Thorn and thistle shall grow up
on their altars,
and (Q)they shall say to the mountains, “Cover us,”
and to the hills, “Fall on us.”

From (R)the days of Gibeah, you have sinned, O Israel;
there they have continued.
Shall not the war against the unjust[g] overtake them in Gibeah?
10 (S)When I please, (T)I will discipline them,
and nations shall be gathered against them
when they are bound up for (U)their double iniquity.

11 Ephraim was a trained calf
that (V)loved to thresh,
and I spared her fair neck;
but I will put (W)Ephraim to the yoke;
(X)Judah must plow;
Jacob must harrow for himself.
12 (Y)Sow for yourselves righteousness;
reap steadfast love;
(Z)break up your fallow ground,
for it is the time to seek the Lord,
that he may come and (AA)rain righteousness upon you.

13 (AB)You have plowed iniquity;
you have reaped injustice;
you have eaten the fruit of lies.
Because you have trusted in your own way
and in the multitude of your warriors,
14 therefore (AC)the tumult of war shall arise among your people,
and all your fortresses shall be destroyed,
as (AD)Shalman destroyed Beth-arbel on the day of battle;
(AE)mothers were dashed in pieces with their children.
15 Thus it shall be done to you, O (AF)Bethel,
because of your great evil.
At dawn (AG)the king of Israel
shall be utterly cut off.

The Lord's Love for Israel

11 (AH)When Israel was a child, (AI)I loved him,
and out of Egypt I (AJ)called (AK)my son.
(AL)The more they were called,
the more they went away;
(AM)they kept sacrificing to the Baals
and burning offerings to idols.

Yet it was (AN)I who taught Ephraim to walk;
I took them up by their arms,
but they did not know that (AO)I healed them.
(AP)I led them with cords of kindness,[h]
with the bands of love,
and (AQ)I became to them as one who eases the yoke on their jaws,
and (AR)I bent down to them and fed them.

(AS)They shall not[i] return to the land of Egypt,
but (AT)Assyria shall be their king,
(AU)because (AV)they have refused to return to me.
(AW)The sword shall rage against their cities,
consume the bars of their gates,
and devour them (AX)because of their own counsels.
My people are bent (AY)on turning away from me,
and though (AZ)they call out to the Most High,
he shall not raise them up at all.

How can I give you up, O Ephraim?
How can I hand you over, O Israel?
(BA)How can I make you (BB)like Admah?
How can I treat you (BC)like Zeboiim?
(BD)My heart recoils within me;
my compassion grows warm and tender.
I will not execute my burning anger;
I will not again destroy Ephraim;
(BE)for I am God and not a man,
(BF)the Holy One in your midst,
and I will not come in wrath.[j]

10 (BG)They shall go after the Lord;
(BH)he will roar like a lion;
when he roars,
his children shall come trembling (BI)from the west;
11 they shall come trembling like birds (BJ)from Egypt,
and (BK)like doves (BL)from the land of Assyria,
and I will return them to their homes, declares the Lord.
12 [k] Ephraim (BM)has surrounded me with lies,
and the house of Israel with deceit,
but Judah still walks with God
and is faithful to the Holy One.
12 Ephraim feeds on the wind
and pursues (BN)the east wind all day long;
they multiply (BO)falsehood and violence;
(BP)they make a covenant with Assyria,
and (BQ)oil is carried to Egypt.

The Lord's Indictment of Israel and Judah

(BR)The Lord has an indictment against Judah
and will punish Jacob according to his ways;
he will repay him according to his deeds.
(BS)In the womb he took his brother by the heel,
and in his manhood he strove with God.
He strove with the angel and prevailed;
he wept and sought his favor.
(BT)He met God[l] at Bethel,
and there God spoke with us—
the Lord, the God of hosts,
(BU)the Lord is his memorial name:
“So you, (BV)by the help of your God, return,
(BW)hold fast to love and justice,
and wait continually for your God.”

A merchant, in whose hands are (BX)false balances,
he loves (BY)to oppress.
Ephraim has said, “Ah, but (BZ)I am rich;
I have found wealth for myself;
in all my labors (CA)they cannot find in me iniquity or sin.”
(CB)I am the Lord your God
from the land of Egypt;
I will again make you (CC)dwell in tents,
as in the days of the appointed feast.

10 (CD)I spoke to the prophets;
it was I who multiplied (CE)visions,
and through the prophets gave parables.
11 (CF)If there is iniquity in Gilead,
they shall surely come to nothing:
(CG)in Gilgal they sacrifice bulls;
(CH)their altars also are like stone heaps
(CI)on the furrows of the field.
12 (CJ)Jacob fled to the land of Aram;
there Israel (CK)served for a wife,
and for a wife he guarded sheep.
13 By (CL)a prophet (CM)the Lord brought Israel up from Egypt,
and by a prophet he was guarded.
14 (CN)Ephraim has given bitter provocation;
so his Lord (CO)will leave his bloodguilt on him
(CP)and will repay him for his disgraceful deeds.

The Lord's Relentless Judgment on Israel

13 When Ephraim spoke, there was trembling;
(CQ)he was exalted in Israel,
but he incurred guilt (CR)through Baal and died.
And now they sin more and more,
and (CS)make for themselves metal images,
idols skillfully made of their silver,
(CT)all of them the work of craftsmen.
It is said of them,
“Those who offer human sacrifice (CU)kiss calves!”
Therefore they shall be (CV)like the morning mist
or (CW)like the dew that goes early away,
(CX)like the chaff that swirls from the threshing floor
or (CY)like smoke from a window.

But (CZ)I am the Lord your God
from the land of Egypt;
(DA)you know no God but me,
and (DB)besides me there is no savior.
(DC)It was I who knew you in the wilderness,
in the land of drought;
(DD)but when they had grazed,[m] they became full,
(DE)they were filled, and their heart was lifted up;
(DF)therefore they forgot me.
So (DG)I am to them like a lion;
(DH)like a leopard I will lurk beside the way.
I will fall upon them (DI)like a bear robbed of her cubs;
I will tear open their breast,
and there I will devour them like a lion,
(DJ)as a wild beast would rip them open.

He destroys[n] you, O Israel,
for you are against me, against (DK)your helper.
10 (DL)Where now is your king, to save you in all your cities?
Where are all your rulers—
those of whom (DM)you said,
“Give me a king and princes”?
11 (DN)I gave you a king in my anger,
and (DO)I took him away in my wrath.

12 The iniquity of Ephraim is (DP)bound up;
his sin is (DQ)kept in store.
13 (DR)The pangs of childbirth come for him,
but he is an unwise son,
for at the right time he does not present himself
(DS)at the opening of the womb.

14 (DT)I shall ransom them from the power of Sheol;
(DU)I shall redeem them from Death.[o]
(DV)O (DW)Death, where are your plagues?
(DX)O (DY)Sheol, where is your sting?
(DZ)Compassion is hidden from my eyes.

15 Though (EA)he may flourish among his brothers,
(EB)the east wind, the wind of the Lord, shall come,
rising from the wilderness,
(EC)and his fountain shall dry up;
his spring shall be parched;
it shall strip (ED)his treasury
of every precious thing.
16 [p] Samaria (EE)shall bear her guilt,
because (EF)she has rebelled against her God;
they shall fall by the sword;
(EG)their little ones shall be dashed in pieces,
and their (EH)pregnant women ripped open.

A Plea to Return to the Lord

14 (EI)Return, O Israel, to the Lord your God,
for (EJ)you have stumbled because of your iniquity.
Take with you words
and return to the Lord;
say to him,
“Take away all iniquity;
accept (EK)what is good,
and we will pay with bulls
(EL)the vows[q] of our lips.
(EM)Assyria shall not save us;
(EN)we will not ride on horses;
and (EO)we will say no more, ‘Our God,’
to the work of our hands.
(EP)In you the orphan finds mercy.”

I (EQ)will heal their apostasy;
(ER)I will love them freely,
for my anger has turned from them.
(ES)I will be like the dew to Israel;
(ET)he shall blossom like the lily;
he shall take root like the trees (EU)of Lebanon;
his shoots shall spread out;
his beauty shall be (EV)like the olive,
and his fragrance like Lebanon.
They shall return and (EW)dwell beneath my[r] shadow;
they shall flourish like the grain;
they shall blossom like the vine;
their fame shall be like the wine of Lebanon.

O (EX)Ephraim, what have I to do with idols?
It is I who answer and look after you.[s]
I am like an evergreen cypress;
(EY)from me comes your fruit.

(EZ)Whoever is wise, let him understand these things;
whoever is discerning, let him know them;
for the ways of the Lord are right,
and (FA)the upright walk in them,
(FB)but transgressors stumble in them.

Beloved, although I was very eager to write to you about our (F)common salvation, I found it necessary to write appealing to you (G)to contend for the faith that was once for all delivered to the saints. For (H)certain people (I)have crept in unnoticed (J)who long ago were designated for this condemnation, ungodly people, who pervert (K)the grace of our God into sensuality and (L)deny our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ.

Now I want (M)to remind you, although you once fully knew it, that (N)Jesus, who saved[c] a people out of the land of Egypt, (O)afterward destroyed those who did not believe. And (P)the angels who did not stay within their own position of authority, but left their proper dwelling, he has kept in eternal chains under gloomy darkness until the judgment of the great day— just as (Q)Sodom and Gomorrah and (R)the surrounding cities, which likewise indulged in sexual immorality and (S)pursued unnatural desire,[d] serve as an example by undergoing a punishment of eternal fire.

Yet in like manner these people also, relying on their dreams, defile the flesh, reject authority, and (T)blaspheme the glorious ones. But when (U)the archangel (V)Michael, contending with the devil, was disputing (W)about the body of Moses, he did not presume to pronounce a blasphemous judgment, but said, (X)“The Lord rebuke you.” 10 (Y)But these people blaspheme all that they do not understand, and they are destroyed by all that they, like unreasoning animals, understand instinctively. 11 Woe to them! For they walked in (Z)the way of Cain and abandoned themselves for the sake of gain (AA)to Balaam's error and (AB)perished in Korah's rebellion. 12 These are hidden reefs[e] (AC)at your love feasts, as they feast with you without fear, (AD)shepherds feeding themselves; (AE)waterless clouds, (AF)swept along by winds; fruitless trees in late autumn, twice dead, (AG)uprooted; 13 (AH)wild waves of the sea, casting up the foam of (AI)their own shame; (AJ)wandering stars, (AK)for whom the gloom of utter darkness has been reserved forever.

14 It was also about these that Enoch, (AL)the seventh from Adam, prophesied, saying, (AM)“Behold, the Lord comes with ten thousands of his holy ones, 15 (AN)to execute judgment on all and to convict all the ungodly of all their deeds of ungodliness that they have (AO)committed in such an ungodly way, and of all (AP)the harsh things that ungodly sinners have spoken against him.” 16 These are grumblers, malcontents, (AQ)following their own sinful desires; (AR)they are loud-mouthed boasters, (AS)showing favoritism to gain advantage.

A Call to Persevere

17 But you must (AT)remember, beloved, the predictions of the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ. 18 They[f] said to you, (AU)“In the last time there will be scoffers, following their own ungodly passions.” 19 It is these who cause divisions, worldly people, (AV)devoid of the Spirit. 20 But you, beloved, (AW)building yourselves up in your most holy faith and (AX)praying in the Holy Spirit, 21 (AY)keep yourselves in the love of God, (AZ)waiting for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ that leads to eternal life. 22 And have mercy on those who doubt; 23 save others by (BA)snatching them out of (BB)the fire; to others show mercy (BC)with fear, hating even (BD)the garment[g] stained by the flesh.

Doxology

24 (BE)Now to him who is able (BF)to keep you from stumbling and (BG)to present you (BH)blameless before the presence of his glory with great joy, 25 to (BI)the only God, our Savior, through Jesus Christ our Lord, (BJ)be glory, majesty, dominion, and authority, before all time[h] and now and forever. Amen.

Psalm 127

Unless the Lord Builds the House

A Song of (A)Ascents. Of Solomon.

127 Unless the Lord builds the house,
those who build it labor in vain.
Unless the Lord (B)watches over the city,
the watchman stays awake in vain.
It is in vain that you rise up early
and go late to rest,
eating the bread of anxious (C)toil;
for he gives to his (D)beloved (E)sleep.

Behold, (F)children are a heritage from the Lord,
(G)the fruit of the womb a reward.
Like arrows in the hand of (H)a warrior
are the children[a] of one's youth.
Blessed is the man
who fills his quiver with them!
He shall not be put to shame
when he speaks with his enemies (I)in the gate.[b]

Proverbs 29:15-17

15 (A)The rod and reproof give wisdom,
but a child left to himself (B)brings shame to his mother.
16 When the wicked increase, transgression increases,
but (C)the righteous will look upon their downfall.
17 (D)Discipline your son, and he will give you rest;
he will give delight to your heart.

The Daily Audio Bible Reading for Tuesday December 8, 2020 (NIV)

Hosea 10-14

10 (A)Israel is a luxuriant vine
that yields its fruit.
The more his fruit increased,
(B)the more altars he built;
as his country improved,
he improved his pillars.
Their heart is false;
now they must bear their guilt.
The Lord[a] will break down their altars
and destroy their pillars.

For now they will say:
(C)“We have no king,
for we do not fear the Lord;
and a king—what could he do for us?”
They utter (D)mere words;
with empty[b] oaths they make covenants;
so (E)judgment springs up like poisonous weeds
(F)in the furrows of the field.
The inhabitants of Samaria tremble
for (G)the calf[c] of (H)Beth-aven.
Its people mourn for it, and so do its idolatrous priests—
those who rejoiced over it and (I)over its glory—
for it has departed[d] from them.
(J)The thing itself shall be carried to Assyria
as tribute to (K)the great king.[e]
Ephraim shall be put to shame,
and Israel shall be ashamed (L)of his idol.[f]

(M)Samaria's king shall perish
like a twig on the face of the waters.
The high places of (N)Aven, (O)the sin of Israel,
shall be destroyed.
(P)Thorn and thistle shall grow up
on their altars,
and (Q)they shall say to the mountains, “Cover us,”
and to the hills, “Fall on us.”

From (R)the days of Gibeah, you have sinned, O Israel;
there they have continued.
Shall not the war against the unjust[g] overtake them in Gibeah?
10 (S)When I please, (T)I will discipline them,
and nations shall be gathered against them
when they are bound up for (U)their double iniquity.

11 Ephraim was a trained calf
that (V)loved to thresh,
and I spared her fair neck;
but I will put (W)Ephraim to the yoke;
(X)Judah must plow;
Jacob must harrow for himself.
12 (Y)Sow for yourselves righteousness;
reap steadfast love;
(Z)break up your fallow ground,
for it is the time to seek the Lord,
that he may come and (AA)rain righteousness upon you.

13 (AB)You have plowed iniquity;
you have reaped injustice;
you have eaten the fruit of lies.
Because you have trusted in your own way
and in the multitude of your warriors,
14 therefore (AC)the tumult of war shall arise among your people,
and all your fortresses shall be destroyed,
as (AD)Shalman destroyed Beth-arbel on the day of battle;

(AL)The more they were called,
the more they went away;
(AM)they kept sacrificing to the Baals
and burning offerings to idols.

Yet it was (AN)I who taught Ephraim to walk;

(BD)My heart recoils within me;
my compassion grows warm and tender.
I will not execute my burning anger;
I will not again destroy Ephraim;
(BE)for I am God and not a man,
(BF)the Holy One in your midst,
and I will not come in wrath.[j]

10 (BG)They shall go after the Lord;
(BH)he will roar like a lion;
when he roars,
his children shall come trembling (BI)from the west;
12 Ephraim feeds on the wind
and pursues (BN)the east wind all day long;
they multiply (BO)falsehood and violence;
(BP)they make a covenant with Assyria,
and (BQ)oil is carried to Egypt.

The Lord's Indictment of Israel and Judah

(BR)The Lord has an indictment against Judah
and will punish Jacob according to his ways;
he will repay him according to his deeds.
(BS)In the womb he took his brother by the heel,
and in his manhood he strove with God.
He strove with the angel and prevailed;
he wept and sought his favor.
(BT)He met God[l] at Bethel,
and there God spoke with us—
the Lord, the God of hosts,
(BU)the Lord is his memorial name:
“So you, (BV)by the help of your God, return,
(BW)hold fast to love and justice,
and wait continually for your God.”

A merchant, in whose hands are (BX)false balances,
he loves (BY)to oppress.
Ephraim has said, “Ah, but (BZ)I am rich;
I have found wealth for myself;
in all my labors (CA)they cannot find in me iniquity or sin.”
(CB)I am the Lord your God
from the land of Egypt;
I will again make you (CC)dwell in tents,
as in the days of the appointed feast.

10 (CD)I spoke to the prophets;
it was I who multiplied (CE)visions,
and through the prophets gave parables.
11 (CF)If there is iniquity in Gilead,
they shall surely come to nothing:
(CG)in Gilgal they sacrifice bulls;
(CH)their altars also are like stone heaps
(CI)on the furrows of the field.
12 (CJ)Jacob fled to the land of Aram;
there Israel (CK)served for a wife,
and for a wife he guarded sheep.
13 By (CL)a prophet (CM)the Lord brought Israel up from Egypt,
and by a prophet he was guarded.
14 (CN)Ephraim has given bitter provocation;
so his Lord (CO)will leave his bloodguilt on him
(CP)and will repay him for his disgraceful deeds.

The Lord's Relentless Judgment on Israel

13 When Ephraim spoke, there was trembling;
(CQ)he was exalted in Israel,
but he incurred guilt (CR)through Baal and died.
And now they sin more and more,
and (CS)make for themselves metal images,
idols skillfully made of their silver,
(CT)all of them the work of craftsmen.
It is said of them,
“Those who offer human sacrifice (CU)kiss calves!”
Therefore they shall be (CV)like the morning mist
or (CW)like the dew that goes early away,
(CX)like the chaff that swirls from the threshing floor
or (CY)like smoke from a window.

But (CZ)I am the Lord your God
from the land of Egypt;
(DA)you know no God but me,
and (DB)besides me there is no savior.
(DC)It was I who knew you in the wilderness,
in the land of drought;
(DD)but when they had grazed,[m] they became full,
(DE)they were filled, and their heart was lifted up;
(DF)therefore they forgot me.
So (DG)I am to them like a lion;
(DH)like a leopard I will lurk beside the way.
I will fall upon them (DI)like a bear robbed of her cubs;

12 The iniquity of Ephraim is (DP)bound up;
his sin is (DQ)kept in store.
13 (DR)The pangs of childbirth come for him,
but he is an unwise son,
for at the right time he does not present himself
(DS)at the opening of the womb.

14 (DT)I shall ransom them from the power of Sheol;
(DU)I shall redeem them from Death.[o]
(DV)O (DW)Death, where are your plagues?
(DX)O (DY)Sheol, where is your sting?
(DZ)Compassion is hidden from my eyes.

15 Though (EA)he may flourish among his brothers,
(EB)the east wind, the wind of the Lord, shall come,
rising from the wilderness,
(EC)and his fountain shall dry up;
his spring shall be parched;
it shall strip (ED)his treasury
of every precious thing.
16 [p] Samaria (EE)shall bear her guilt,
because (EF)she has rebelled against her God;
they shall fall by the sword;
(EG)their little ones shall be dashed in pieces,
and their (EH)pregnant women ripped open.

A Plea to Return to the Lord

14 (EI)Return, O Israel, to the Lord your God,
for (EJ)you have stumbled because of your iniquity.
Take with you words
and return to the Lord;
say to him,
“Take away all iniquity;
accept (EK)what is good,
and we will pay with bulls
(EL)the vows[q] of our lips.
(EM)Assyria shall not save us;
(EN)we will not ride on horses;
and (EO)we will say no more, ‘Our God,’
to the work of our hands.
(EP)In you the orphan finds mercy.”

I (EQ)will heal their apostasy;
(ER)I will love them freely,
for my anger has turned from them.
(ES)I will be like the dew to Israel;
(ET)he shall blossom like the lily;
he shall take root like the trees (EU)of Lebanon;
his shoots shall spread out;
his beauty shall be (EV)like the olive,
and his fragrance like Lebanon.
They shall return and (EW)dwell beneath my[r] shadow;
they shall flourish like the grain;
they shall blossom like the vine;
their fame shall be like the wine of Lebanon.

O (EX)Ephraim, what have I to do with idols?
It is I who answer and look after you.[s]
I am like an evergreen cypress;
(EY)from me comes your fruit.

(EZ)Whoever is wise, let him understand these things;
whoever is discerning, let him know them;
for the ways of the Lord are right,
and (FA)the upright walk in them,
(FB)but transgressors stumble in them.

Jude

Greeting

Jude, a servant[a] of Jesus Christ and brother of James,

(A)To those who are called, (B)beloved in God the Father and (C)kept for[b] Jesus Christ:

May (D)mercy, (E)peace, and love be multiplied to you.

Judgment on False Teachers

It is in vain that you rise up early
and go late to rest,
eating the bread of anxious (C)toil;
for he gives to his (D)beloved (E)sleep.

Behold, (F)children are a heritage from the Lord,
(G)the fruit of the womb a reward.
Like arrows in the hand of (H)a warrior
are the children[a] of one's youth.
Blessed is the man
who fills his quiver with them!
He shall not be put to shame
when he speaks with his enemies (I)in the gate.[b]

Proverbs 29:15-17

15 (A)The rod and reproof give wisdom,
but a child left to himself (B)brings shame to his mother.
16 When the wicked increase, transgression increases,
but (C)the righteous will look upon their downfall.
17 (D)Discipline your son, and he will give you rest;
he will give delight to your heart.

Hosea 6:1-9:17, 3 John 1:1-15, Psalms 126:1-6, Proverbs 29:12-14

Today is the 7th day of December welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I am Brian and it is wonderful to be here with you today as we continue our journey, which is what we do every day, continue our journey through the Scriptures. And each and every day greets us with something new to think about, something to carry forward, something that develops us and continues our growth in the Lord. And, so, let’s dive in. We’re reading from the English Standard Version this week. Hosea chapters 6, seven, eight and nine today.

Introduction to third John:

Okay. So, yesterday we read an entire letter in the New Testament that was called second John and we talked about it. And we started and finished it. So, that brings us to the threshold of another letter. This one is the final of…of John’s letters. It’s known as third John and probably like the other two they were written from Ephesus probably later in John’s life. But third John’s just a little different than first and second John because…well…I mean, remember when we were reading Paul’s letters and we came to a short letter, known as Philemon? So, Philemon’s the one with the runaway slave Onesimus and you remember all that. But the…the distinction about that particular letter is that it wasn’t a letter written to a church or a group of people. It was a personal letter written to a person. So, third John is like that. Third John is a personal letter written to a man named Gaius. And Gaius it appears from the letter is an upstanding believer in the…in the…in the church world or the network of churches that John was leading. And John writes this letter to Gaius to give him…well…a couple of things; personal encouragement, because he’s passionate about the gospel and he’s willing to serve and supports the traveling teachers that are sent throughout the churches that John has sent throughout the churches and the custom of welcoming these ministers who come, like itinerant ministers who move around the churches to encourage the churches and teach them. The care of their needs was a common thing and Gaius participated in this. But it’s not just to pat him on the back. John felt like this letter was necessary because it was a church leader named Diotrephes and this leader had risen up in authority but had in the process distanced himself from John. And, so, he refused to offer hospitality to these traveling ministers. And causing even more divisiveness, Diotrephes was kicking people out of the church who disagreed with him and assisted these itinerant missionaries. Now here’s the irony. In second John, John basically says, “this is how you should…I mean you shouldn’t really show hospitality or give words of encouragement to itinerant ministers who are coming in and bringing a false teaching.” So, Diotrephes is doing that, but apparently has decided that the people John is sending through are bringing false teachings and he’s ascribed to something different. We don’t really know the full context here. Nevertheless, John wrote this personal letter to Gaius to commend him because he was caring and showing hospitality to those who were traveling to bring the gospel. And, so, this letter then would serve as a written notice, like it would affirm in writing that Gaius was doing the right thing. And you can imagine that if you get a personal letter from one of the 12 disciples of Jesus, then that’s probably pretty valuable. And it has certainly been preserved and it’s in our New Testament now, but you can imagine at the time that this would have…this would’ve carried weight with it. And, so, again, as with many of the letters, and much of the New Testament we get a glimpse back at the early formative time in the faith, and some of the controversies and some of the problems that they had to face to move things forward. And, so, we’ll read together in its entirety now. Third John.

Prayer:

Father, we thank You for Your word and thank You for what it does to us, that it goes inside of us and moves around within rearranging things, transforming things, moving things out that don’t belong, moving things in that do into our lives so that all things work together for the good of those who love You. And we love You and we are grateful. And we thank You even as we move into a more speedy time of the year, this month of December. And even as things begin to move more quickly in the Scriptures because we’re moving through so much territory, thank You for what we get to learn, that even though we might read a whole letter or a whole book in a day that we get to kind of fly over it and understand where it sits in the grand scheme of canon of Scripture. And, so, Father as we continue this rhythm and as it does speed up and as we do continue to move through more and more territory we invite Your Holy Spirit to lead us to what it is that we need to hear and what we need to observe and what we need to meditate upon what we need to plant in the soil of our lives. In fact, we open our lives to You and submit You fully and invite You to plant in our lives the fruit of the spirit, the fruit of Your spirit. And may this come from the transformational power of the Scriptures in our lives each and every day. Come Holy Spirit we pray into all this, we ask in the name of Jesus. Amen.

And if you don’t have the app you should get it. It’s free. It’s a way to get away a more connected to the journey through the Bible in a year. So, check that out. But all the things we’re talking about here can be accessed from within the app as well.

Right now, it’s Christmas time. So, we’ve been talking about the Christmas box that we don’t have this year. We normally do and we pack it full of all kinds of goodies and select them perfectly and it’s just great, but with all of the uncertainties that this year has brought we have elected to just say, “here’s the shop, we’ve discounted everything that we possibly can. Make your own Christmas box.” If you spend $40 or more in the Shop, we will send you the Daily Audio Bible Christmas ornament for 2020. That’s an exclusive for the Christmas box each year, but we’ll send it to you this year. And, so, Yeah, I was talking about that yesterday, how I have them hung on my tree and how they…they represent a year of my life in the Bible, but they represent a year of my life in community with you as well. And, so, I love that. So, we’ll send it to you if you spend $40 more in the Shop. There’s all kinds of resources that are in the Shop. The Daily Audio Bible Global Campfire Klean Kanteen that we only had one time this year. We have them rarely. We get them sometimes a couple times a year. This time one time this year. And this is the only time this year and it’s the Global Campfire edition. It’s awesome. I mean, I have one too. I use it every single day. Those will not last. We’ve had them for I think a week. They are almost gone. They might be gone by the end of the day, but they will not last this week. S, yeah, check those out. They’re in the Daily Audio Bible Shop. And there are all kinds of other…other ideas there as well. So, check it out.

If you want to partner with the Daily Audio Bible, you can do that at dailyaudiobible.com. There is a link on the homepage. If you’re using the app you can press the Give button in the upper right-hand corner, or the mailing address is PO Box 1996 Spring Hill Tennessee 37174.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Hello Daily Audio Bible community this is Abba’s Joy and I just want to call in with a special prayer request. Of course, I’d like to say thank you to this community and to Brian Hardin and the Hardin family for this wonderful ministry that has blessed me tremendously throughout this year. I would like to ask for prayers for my son. He is 14 years old and he deals with anxiety, self-confidence issues. He blames God for certain things when they don’t go his way and he has developed a resistance to listening to the word of God. There’s just a lot of confusion right now and I know the enemy has been trying to get through to him. But deep down I know that he has love for Jesus Christ. And I just would like you guys to lift him up so that he just knows the power of Jesus Christ and that he can overcome anything. I thank you so much and I love you all. Have a blessed day or night wherever you may be. Thank you.

Okay I’m gonna try this again. I’m in my car and I’m on my way to work and I don’t have the phone in my hand so I’m hoping this is recording and you can hear me. This is Kathleen Mount Zion Illinois. I just wanted to thank Gigi for calling in with a prayer or not even a prayer just a story of thanks, a story of thankfulness to God for what He has done in her life. And Gigi I just…really, I just…you have such a kind spirit. You seem to just have this amazingly kind spirit in you and that just resonated with me and how thankful you were to God for bringing you Seth. And it sounds like God brought him write to you and it changes your life. That…that hit me because I too had thought I would be a missionary someday and instead I…I married and had children and now I have grandchildren and am very thankful for all of that and I just, you know, you just, you just want everybody to feel what you feel, right? That’s what I would like. I just I thank God and I think it all comes from thanking God, from being thankful. And that’s what I pray, for the Daily Audio Bible listeners, that we could thank God for anything, anything that is good and positive and wonderful in our lives. Thank you.

Hi, I’m Halo and my mom was the one who inspired me to this program, and I love it. And also, I kind of need help with my hatred. There’s a kid in my class that is really mean. And I tried to remember that you have to forgive your neighbors and I just need a little help with that. Thank you DAB family. Also thank you Brian to help my mom through the good and bad times. Bye and have a great day.

Father God tonight we lift up those who are searching for meaning whether they are Christians Muslim Seeks Buddhists another region or no religion at all or just don’t know. Father God we are searching for meaning, we’re looking for…we’re looking for something and we know Lord that…that You are the only one that gives meaning, that gives us that fulfillment that we’re actually looking for. Father God during this Advent and Christmas time I pray that You’d be…that Your truth would be a shining light, that those people who are searching could find You. We pray for our churches and our communities, for our brothers and sisters, and pray that they would be and that we would be shining light so that we would be able to guide people to You so people will find what they’re looking for even those that don’t know that what they’re looking for, that they would find it in You. May they join us in saying praise the Lord. We will give thanks to the Lord with our whole hearts. Great are the works of the Lord studied by all who delight in them. Full of splendor and majesty is His work and Your righteousness endures forever. You provide food for those who fear You. You remember Your promises forever. May we see You be glorified Lord and may lives be saved in Jesus name…

This is Candace from Oregon with a praise report. My son Micah was in a really awful situation and he actually had some good things happening at the same time, one of which was the first time in his whole life where he had paid vacation for a week. But then that last day when it was time to go back to this really difficult situation at his work he was just overcome with hopelessness and despair and depression and anxiety. So, I did warfare against the…the spirits, those spirits, those evil spirits and any back up plan the enemy had. And our Lord who is so kind and so merciful. Our Lord who is faithful and true and always loading us with undeserved favor was right there. And Micah, he…he almost didn’t go into work because of just this huge dilemma he was up against. But he managed to go anyway and when I picked him up 12 hours later after a 12 hour shift the…this oppression had completely lifted. Lord, thank You so much and please help Micah to know that it’s You and to receive You Lord wholeheartedly and to confess You before men. Thank You, Jesus. Thanks for Your love and tender care. To…to You be all the honor and all the glory for all the things You’re doing in all of our difficulties Lord.

The Daily Audio Bible Reading for Monday December 7, 2020 (NIV)

Hosea 6-9

Israel and Judah Are Unrepentant

“Come, let us (A)return to the Lord;
for (B)he has torn us, that he may heal us;
he has struck us down, and (C)he will bind us up.
After two days (D)he will revive us;
on the third day he will raise us up,
that we may live before him.
(E)Let us know; (F)let us press on to know the Lord;
(G)his going out is sure as the dawn;
he will come to us (H)as the showers,
(I)as the spring rains that water the earth.”

What shall I do with you, (J)O (K)Ephraim?
What shall I do with you, O (L)Judah?
Your love is (M)like a morning cloud,
(N)like the dew that goes early away.
Therefore I have hewn them by the prophets;
I have slain them (O)by the words of my mouth,
and my judgment goes forth as the light.
For (P)I desire steadfast love[a] and not sacrifice,
(Q)the knowledge of God rather than burnt offerings.

But (R)like Adam they (S)transgressed the covenant;
(T)there they dealt faithlessly with me.
(U)Gilead is a city of evildoers,
(V)tracked with blood.
As robbers (W)lie in wait for a man,
so the priests band together;
they murder on the way to (X)Shechem;
they commit villainy.
10 In the house of Israel I have seen a horrible thing;
(Y)Ephraim's whoredom is there; (Z)Israel is defiled.

11 For you also, O (AA)Judah, (AB)a harvest is appointed.

When (AC)I restore the fortunes of my people,
(AD)when I would heal Israel,
the iniquity of Ephraim is revealed,
and the evil deeds of (AE)Samaria,
for (AF)they deal falsely;
the thief breaks in,
and the bandits raid outside.
But they do not consider
that (AG)I remember all their evil.
Now (AH)their deeds surround them;
(AI)they are before my face.
By their evil (AJ)they make (AK)the king glad,
and the princes by their treachery.
(AL)They are all adulterers;
they are like a heated oven
whose baker ceases to stir the fire,
from the kneading of the dough
until it is leavened.
On the day of (AM)our king, the princes
became sick with the heat of wine;
he stretched out his hand with mockers.
For with hearts like an oven (AN)they approach their intrigue;
all night their anger smolders;
in the morning it blazes like a flaming fire.
All of them are hot as an oven,
and they devour their rulers.
All (AO)their kings (AP)have fallen,
and none of them calls upon me.

Ephraim (AQ)mixes himself with the peoples;
Ephraim is a cake not turned.
(AR)Strangers devour his strength,
and (AS)he knows it not;
gray hairs are sprinkled upon him,
and (AT)he knows it not.
10 (AU)The pride of Israel testifies to his face;[b]
(AV)yet they do not return to the Lord their God,
nor seek him, for all this.

11 Ephraim is like a dove,
(AW)silly and without sense,
calling to (AX)Egypt, going to (AY)Assyria.
12 As they go, (AZ)I will spread over them my net;
I will bring them down like birds of the heavens;
(BA)I will discipline them (BB)according to the report made to their congregation.
13 (BC)Woe to them, for they have strayed from me!
Destruction to them, for they have rebelled against me!
(BD)I would redeem them,
but (BE)they speak lies against me.

14 (BF)They do not cry to me from the heart,
but (BG)they wail upon their beds;
for grain and wine they gash themselves;
they rebel against me.
15 Although (BH)I trained and strengthened their arms,
yet they devise evil against me.
16 They (BI)return, but not upward;[c]
they are (BJ)like a treacherous bow;
their princes shall fall by the sword
because of (BK)the insolence of their tongue.
This shall be their derision (BL)in the land of Egypt.

Israel Will Reap the Whirlwind

Set (BM)the trumpet to your lips!
One (BN)like a vulture is over the house of the Lord,
because (BO)they have transgressed my covenant
and rebelled against my law.
To me they cry,
(BP)“My God, we—Israel—know you.”
Israel has spurned the good;
the enemy shall pursue him.

(BQ)They made kings, (BR)but not through me.
They set up princes, but I knew it not.
With their silver and gold they made idols
for their own destruction.
(BS)I have[d] spurned your calf, O Samaria.
My anger burns against them.
(BT)How long will they be incapable of innocence?
For it is from Israel;
a craftsman made it;
it is not God.
(BU)The calf of Samaria
(BV)shall be broken to pieces.[e]

For (BW)they sow the wind,
and they shall reap the whirlwind.
The standing grain has no heads;
it shall yield no flour;
if it were to yield,
(BX)strangers would devour it.
(BY)Israel is swallowed up;
already they are among the nations
as (BZ)a useless vessel.
For (CA)they have gone up to Assyria,
(CB)a wild donkey wandering alone;
Ephraim has hired lovers.
10 Though they hire allies among the nations,
I will soon gather them up.
And (CC)the king and princes (CD)shall soon writhe
because of the tribute.

11 Because Ephraim (CE)has multiplied altars for sinning,
they have become to him altars for sinning.
12 (CF)Were I to write for him my laws by the ten thousands,
they would be regarded as a strange thing.
13 As for my sacrificial offerings,
(CG)they sacrifice meat and eat it,
but the Lord does not accept them.
(CH)Now he will remember their iniquity
and punish their sins;
(CI)they shall return to Egypt.
14 For (CJ)Israel has forgotten (CK)his Maker
and (CL)built palaces,
and (CM)Judah has multiplied fortified cities;
so (CN)I will send a fire upon his cities,
and it shall devour her strongholds.

The Lord Will Punish Israel

Rejoice not, O Israel!
Exult not like the peoples;
(CO)for you have played the whore, forsaking your God.
(CP)You have loved a prostitute's wages
on all threshing floors.
(CQ)Threshing floor and wine vat shall not feed them,
and (CR)the new wine shall fail them.
They shall not remain in (CS)the land of the Lord,
but (CT)Ephraim shall return to Egypt,
and (CU)they shall eat unclean food in Assyria.

(CV)They shall not pour drink offerings of wine to the Lord,
(CW)and their sacrifices shall not please him.
It shall be like (CX)mourners' bread to them;
all who eat of it shall be defiled;
for their bread shall be for their hunger only;
(CY)it shall not come to the house of the Lord.

(CZ)What will you do on the day of the appointed festival,
and on the day of the feast of the Lord?
For behold, they are going away from destruction;
but (DA)Egypt shall gather them;
Memphis shall bury them.
Nettles shall possess (DB)their precious things of silver;
(DC)thorns shall be in their tents.

(DD)The days of punishment have come;
the days of recompense have come;
Israel shall know it.
(DE)The prophet is a fool;
the man of the spirit is mad,
because of your great iniquity
and great hatred.
The prophet is (DF)the watchman of Ephraim with my God;
yet (DG)a fowler's snare is on all his ways,
and hatred in the house of his God.
(DH)They have deeply corrupted themselves
as (DI)in the days of Gibeah:
(DJ)he will remember their iniquity;
he will punish their sins.

10 Like grapes in the wilderness,
(DK)I found Israel.
Like the first fruit on the fig tree
in its first season,
I saw your fathers.
But (DL)they came to Baal-peor
and (DM)consecrated themselves to the thing of shame,
and (DN)became detestable like the thing they loved.
11 Ephraim's (DO)glory shall fly away like a bird—
(DP)no birth, no pregnancy, no conception!
12 (DQ)Even if they bring up children,
I will bereave them till none is left.
(DR)Woe to them
when (DS)I depart from them!
13 Ephraim, (DT)as I have seen, was like a young palm[f] planted in a meadow;
but (DU)Ephraim must lead his children out to slaughter.[g]
14 Give them, O Lord
what will you give?
Give them (DV)a miscarrying womb
and dry breasts.

15 Every evil of theirs is in (DW)Gilgal;
there I began to hate them.
Because of the wickedness of their deeds
I will drive them out of my house.
I will love them no more;
all (DX)their princes are (DY)rebels.

16 Ephraim is stricken;
(DZ)their root is dried up;
they shall bear no fruit.
Even (EA)though they give birth,
(EB)I will put their beloved children to death.
17 (EC)My God will reject them
because they have not listened to him;
(ED)they shall be wanderers among the nations.

3 John

Greeting

(A)The elder to the beloved Gaius, (B)whom I love in truth.

Beloved, I pray that all may go well with you and that you may be in good health, as it goes well with your soul. For (C)I rejoiced greatly when the brothers[a] came and testified to your truth, as indeed you are walking in the truth. I have no greater joy than to hear that (D)my children are walking in the truth.

Support and Opposition

Beloved, it is a faithful thing you do in all your efforts for (E)these brothers, (F)strangers as they are, who testified to your love before the church. You will do well to send them on their journey in a manner (G)worthy of God. For they have gone out for the sake of (H)the name, (I)accepting nothing from the Gentiles. Therefore we ought to support people like these, that we may be fellow workers for the truth.

I have written something to the church, but Diotrephes, who likes to put himself first, does not acknowledge our authority. 10 So if I come, I will bring up what he is doing, talking wicked nonsense against us. And not content with that, he refuses to welcome the brothers, and also stops those who want to and puts them out of the church.

11 Beloved, (J)do not imitate evil but imitate good. (K)Whoever does good is from God; (L)whoever does evil has not seen God. 12 Demetrius (M)has received a good testimony from everyone, and from the truth itself. We also add our testimony, and (N)you know that our testimony is true.

Final Greetings

13 (O)I had much to write to you, but I would rather not write with pen and ink. 14 I hope to see you soon, and we will talk face to face.

15 Peace be to you. The friends greet you. Greet the friends, (P)each by name.

Psalm 126

Restore Our Fortunes, O Lord

A Song of (A)Ascents.

126 When the Lord (B)restored the fortunes of Zion,
we were like those who (C)dream.
Then our (D)mouth was filled with laughter,
and our tongue with shouts of joy;
then they said among the nations,
(E)“The Lord has done great things for them.”
The Lord has done great things for us;
we are glad.

Restore our fortunes, O Lord,
like streams in the Negeb!
(F)Those who sow in tears
shall reap with shouts of joy!
He who goes out weeping,
bearing the seed for sowing,
shall come home with shouts of joy,
bringing his sheaves with him.

Proverbs 29:12-14

12 If a ruler listens to falsehood,
all his officials will be wicked.
13 The poor man and the oppressor (A)meet together;
the Lord (B)gives light to the eyes of both.
14 If a king (C)faithfully judges the poor,
his throne will (D)be established forever.

Hosea 6-9

Israel and Judah Are Unrepentant

“Come, let us (A)return to the Lord;
for (B)he has torn us, that he may heal us;
he has struck us down, and (C)he will bind us up.
After two days (D)he will revive us;
on the third day he will raise us up,
that we may live before him.
(E)Let us know; (F)let us press on to know the Lord;
(G)his going out is sure as the dawn;
he will come to us (H)as the showers,
(I)as the spring rains that water the earth.”

What shall I do with you, (J)O (K)Ephraim?
What shall I do with you, O (L)Judah?
Your love is (M)like a morning cloud,
(N)like the dew that goes early away.
Therefore I have hewn them by the prophets;
I have slain them (O)by the words of my mouth,
and my judgment goes forth as the light.
For (P)I desire steadfast love[a] and not sacrifice,
(Q)the knowledge of God rather than burnt offerings.

But (R)like Adam they (S)transgressed the covenant;
(T)there they dealt faithlessly with me.
(U)Gilead is a city of evildoers,
(V)tracked with blood.
As robbers (W)lie in wait for a man,
so the priests band together;
they murder on the way to (X)Shechem;
they commit villainy.
10 In the house of Israel I have seen a horrible thing;
(Y)Ephraim's whoredom is there; (Z)Israel is defiled.

11 For you also, O (AA)Judah, (AB)a harvest is appointed.

When (AC)I restore the fortunes of my people,
(AD)when I would heal Israel,
the iniquity of Ephraim is revealed,
and the evil deeds of (AE)Samaria,
for (AF)they deal falsely;
the thief breaks in,
and the bandits raid outside.
But they do not consider
that (AG)I remember all their evil.
Now (AH)their deeds surround them;
(AI)they are before my face.
By their evil (AJ)they make (AK)the king glad,
and the princes by their treachery.
(AL)They are all adulterers;
they are like a heated oven
whose baker ceases to stir the fire,
from the kneading of the dough
until it is leavened.
On the day of (AM)our king, the princes
became sick with the heat of wine;
he stretched out his hand with mockers.
For with hearts like an oven (AN)they approach their intrigue;
all night their anger smolders;
in the morning it blazes like a flaming fire.
All of them are hot as an oven,
and they devour their rulers.
All (AO)their kings (AP)have fallen,
and none of them calls upon me.

Ephraim (AQ)mixes himself with the peoples;
Ephraim is a cake not turned.
(AR)Strangers devour his strength,
and (AS)he knows it not;
gray hairs are sprinkled upon him,
and (AT)he knows it not.

12 As they go, (AZ)I will spread over them my net;
I will bring them down like birds of the heavens;
(BA)I will discipline them (BB)according to the report made to their congregation.
13 (BC)Woe to them, for they have strayed from me!
Destruction to them, for they have rebelled against me!
(BD)I would redeem them,
but (BE)they speak lies against me.

14 (BF)They do not cry to me from the heart,
but (BG)they wail upon their beds;
for grain and wine they gash themselves;
they rebel against me.
15 Although (BH)I trained and strengthened their arms,
yet they devise evil against me.
16 They (BI)return, but not upward;[c]
they are (BJ)like a treacherous bow;
their princes shall fall by the sword
because of (BK)the insolence of their tongue.
This shall be their derision (BL)in the land of Egypt.

Israel Will Reap the Whirlwind

Set (BM)the trumpet to your lips!
One (BN)like a vulture is over the house of the Lord,
because (BO)they have transgressed my covenant
and rebelled against my law.
To me they cry,
(BP)“My God, we—Israel—know you.”
Israel has spurned the good;
the enemy shall pursue him.

For it is from Israel;
a craftsman made it;
it is not God.
(BU)The calf of Samaria
(BV)shall be broken to pieces.[e]

For (BW)they sow the wind,
and they shall reap the whirlwind.
The standing grain has no heads;
it shall yield no flour;
if it were to yield,
(BX)strangers would devour it.
(BY)Israel is swallowed up;
already they are among the nations
as (BZ)a useless vessel.
For (CA)they have gone up to Assyria,
(CB)a wild donkey wandering alone;

(CH)Now he will remember their iniquity
and punish their sins;
(CI)they shall return to Egypt.
14 For (CJ)Israel has forgotten (CK)his Maker
and (CL)built palaces,
and (CM)Judah has multiplied fortified cities;
so (CN)I will send a fire upon his cities,
and it shall devour her strongholds.

The Lord Will Punish Israel

Rejoice not, O Israel!
Exult not like the peoples;

It shall be like (CX)mourners' bread to them;
all who eat of it shall be defiled;
for their bread shall be for their hunger only;
(CY)it shall not come to the house of the Lord.

(CZ)What will you do on the day of the appointed festival,
and on the day of the feast of the Lord?
For behold, they are going away from destruction;
but (DA)Egypt shall gather them;
Memphis shall bury them.
Nettles shall possess (DB)their precious things of silver;
(DC)thorns shall be in their tents.

(DD)The days of punishment have come;
the days of recompense have come;
Israel shall know it.
(DE)The prophet is a fool;
the man of the spirit is mad,
because of your great iniquity
and great hatred.
The prophet is (DF)the watchman of Ephraim with my God;
yet (DG)a fowler's snare is on all his ways,
and hatred in the house of his God.
(DH)They have deeply corrupted themselves
as (DI)in the days of Gibeah:
(DJ)he will remember their iniquity;
he will punish their sins.

10 Like grapes in the wilderness,
(DK)I found Israel.
Like the first fruit on the fig tree
in its first season,
I saw your fathers.
But (DL)they came to Baal-peor
and (DM)consecrated themselves to the thing of shame,
and (DN)became detestable like the thing they loved.
11 Ephraim's (DO)glory shall fly away like a bird—
(DP)no birth, no pregnancy, no conception!
12 (DQ)Even if they bring up children,
I will bereave them till none is left.
(DR)Woe to them
when (DS)I depart from them!
13 Ephraim, (DT)as I have seen, was like a young palm[f] planted in a meadow;
but (DU)Ephraim must lead his children out to slaughter.[g]
14 Give them, O Lord
what will you give?
Give them (DV)a miscarrying womb
and dry breasts.

15 Every evil of theirs is in (DW)Gilgal;
there I began to hate them.
Because of the wickedness of their deeds
I will drive them out of my house.
I will love them no more;
all (DX)their princes are (DY)rebels.

16 Ephraim is stricken;
(DZ)their root is dried up;
they shall bear no fruit.
Even (EA)though they give birth,
(EB)I will put their beloved children to death.
17 (EC)My God will reject them
because they have not listened to him;
(ED)they shall be wanderers among the nations.

3 John

Then our (D)mouth was filled with laughter,
and our tongue with shouts of joy;
then they said among the nations,
(E)“The Lord has done great things for them.”
The Lord has done great things for us;
we are glad.

Restore our fortunes, O Lord,
like streams in the Negeb!
(F)Those who sow in tears
shall reap with shouts of joy!
He who goes out weeping,
bearing the seed for sowing,
shall come home with shouts of joy,
bringing his sheaves with him.

Proverbs 29:12-14

12 If a ruler listens to falsehood,
all his officials will be wicked.
13 The poor man and the oppressor (A)meet together;
the Lord (B)gives light to the eyes of both.
14 If a king (C)faithfully judges the poor,
his throne will (D)be established forever.

Hosea 4:1-5:15, 2 John 1:1-13, Psalms 125:1-5, Proverbs 29:9-11

Today is the 6th day of December welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I’m Brian it is a joy to be here with you as we do what we do every beginning of every week. We just kind of envision a threshold and we envision ourselves opening the gates and walking through the threshold into a brand-new week and remind ourselves that nothing good or bad has happened yet out in that week, that’s our future and the steps that we take will tell the story of the week and things get busier and busier and busier. Today’s the second Sunday in the season of Advent. And, of course, Advent is…is church tradition, it’s part of our church history. Advents not a season that’s in the Bible but it is a meaningful season as we take 40 days to put ourselves in the position of those in ancient times when Jesus…when the star was shining over Bethlehem and people were following that star. We put ourselves back in that time. We understand that people were marginalized, suppressed, looking for a Redeemer, crying out to God for a Savior, crying out for redemption. And, so, we put ourselves in that same position as we move into the holidays, move toward Christmas and acknowledge and celebrate the arrival of the Savior. That’s what Advent means, arrival. And, so, as we move through this season, we just simply keep our hearts in that place longing for the arrival. Because even as we put ourselves in a position of those before Jesus came, we also understand that we are waiting for the second Advent, arrival. We are in the same position, waiting longing, asking God to return to come make things right to set things as they should be. Of course, this season leads us to Christmas and Christmas leads us to New Year’s. And, so, not too many more of these shiny sparkly new thresholds before we will be swinging wide the windows and gates on a brand-new year. But we’re here now and we’re gonna continue to make progress all the way until we collectively read the last word of the Bible together. So, we’ve got a brand-new week. Will read from the English Standard Version this week. We will pick up where we left off yesterday in the book of Hosea in the Old Testament, and then we get to the New Testament, we have another letter and we will read the letter, known as second John in its entirety. But first Hosea, chapters 4 and 5.

Introduction to second John:

Okay. So, as I mentioned at the beginning, once we get to the New Testament, we’re gonna read a letter in its entirety known as second John. And, so, that’s where we are. And, you know, we just read first John so now we’re in second John. After this we’ll be third John, these personal letters of John the evangelist, the disciple of Jesus. And this letter has a lot of similarities. Second, John has a lot of similarities to first John and so it’s probably a letter was written fairly recent or fairly shortly after the first one, and probably went to the same people because…because they’re similar. And it’s the similarities of the letters that…that convince scholars that these letters are written by the same person and that person being John. And since the tradition in the church is that John spent his latter years in Ephesus, if the tradition is…is true then and it’s likely that this is where the letter was penned. And you remember when we were reading the letters of Paul, we came to a short letter, personal letter named Philemon. It was…it was a quick read. That’s kind of where we are here in second John. It’s a…it’s a quick read. There’s 13 versus in the entire letter. Basically, the first three verses are greetings and then there’s another three verses that remind us of the importance of love. And if you remember the letter we just read, first John, loving one another as a foundational paramount irreplaceable portion of our…of our spiritual journey was front and center in first John. And, so, it’s revisited here in second John. And then we have few verses against false teaching. And then a couple of verses that aren’t repeating what’s in first John. And these verses talk about like false teachers coming and…and how behave basically. It's…it…it’s a message to not be encouraging or not be hospitable. And then we have a conclusion. So, I’ve like spent more time talking about it then it will take to read it. And it would be easy to blur them together. Like these are just…these short letters from John the evangelist and we just move through them quick because they’re very quick. And since we read them very quick and back to back, we don’t necessarily have the understanding that there was some time that passed. So, if we imagine that we received first John and we read first John and then months go by and then a shorter note arrives just reinforcing and reminding us of what had been previously said then we’re probably in the right…in the right frame of mind. And, so, let’s read this letter together, second John.

Prayer:

Father, we thank You for Your word. Father, we love You and we are grateful. We are certainly grateful for the scriptures. We are certainly grateful for each other in community. We are thankful for the rhythm that You have given us and allowed us to take steps day by day step-by-step forward. All of these days. And here we find ourselves at day 341 in the year. And, so, we just take this opportunity at the threshold of a brand-new week that we are walking into to voice, to give voice to our gratitude. We are grateful. We are grateful for the…for the oxygen that we are breathing that is sustaining life. We are thankful for the breath, the inspiration and expiration every time we breathe. We thank You for those that we love who are walking through life with us. We thank You for this time that we are able to live in where something like what we’re doing here in community going through the Scriptures is even a possibility. We just take this time to thank You. This is how we want to start our brand-new shiny sparkly week, in the Scriptures with a heart of gratitude. So, come Holy Spirit and lead us deeper into this. May this be the normal. May this be what this week looks like, that we are grateful and that we are reoriented to You each day by the power of the Scriptures in our lives. We pray this in the name of Jesus. Amen.

Announcements:

dailyaudiobible.com is home base and, you know, www.dailyaudiobible.com, that’s a website. And, so, if anybody was confused. Its home base for the virtual community that we share as we take the journey through the Bible in a year. And our journey, yeah, I mean we…we are most of the way through our journey this year. And, so, we are celebrating, we’re beginning to celebrate the festive…festivities of Christmas and then pressing on toward the new year.

So, the Daily Audio Bible Shop is open. It’s always open, but it’s open right now for Christmas time. And we normally have a Christmas box but with COVID and all of this…this…just the erratic-ness of it all, we’re just putting everything on sale and just saying, “hey, make your own Christmas box.” There are things that you’ll want for yourself to remind you of the journey that you took in 2020, an unforgettable year. And there are things there that you may want to give away just to the right person who needs it at just the right time. So, there are written resources, things to read, things to write with, things to write in, things to listen to, music to enjoy, an entire Global Campfire line, our Daily Audio Bible journals. Just browse the store and if you spend $40 or more in the Shop, we will send you the Daily Audio Bible Christmas ornament for 2020. We have them every year. We have, I guess, this is the seventh one, the seventh year that we’ve had them. And, so, I’ve got em’ for every year hanging on my tree. It’s, for me, and I know I’m not alone because I’ve heard over the years that others tell me similar stories, for me that one bulb, since I can’t have all of you, you wouldn’t fit in my living room anyway, we’d need like, I don’t know, a couple of stadiums to have a Christmas party. But it’s my way anyway, for me, it’s like this physical ornament that I hang on my tree and its…it just reminds me of you. It's…it’s you being in my living room. It’s us being together for Christmas. And, so, I mean because it’s the best that we have right now. And, so, I love having those on my tree. I love remembering the journeys of those years. Those ornaments represent a whole year together in community in the Bible. So, I, you know, I’m a fan obviously or I wouldn’t still be talking about it, but that’s why it’s…it’s just a personal thing. It just…it’s my way of looking at that and going, “that represents that year.” So, anyway if you spend $40 more in the in the Shop, we’ll send you the Christmas ornament along with your order. So, check that out.

I know that wasn’t meant just for me, but I needed that. Thank you. I was going to call anyway just to thank all the people who call and share, especially when God has answered their prayers. It builds up my faith, it helps me. I’m not always able to pray for everyone as long as I’d like but I do join in and am thankful for this group of people who love God and want to seek Him and support each other. Thank you for being another family for me even though my family’s great and they’re here. But it always helps to have support from others, and I appreciate it.

The Daily Audio Bible Reading for Sunday December 6, 2020 (NIV)

Hosea 4-5

The Lord Accuses Israel

(A)Hear the word of the Lord, O children of Israel,
for (B)the Lord has a controversy with the inhabitants of the land.
There is no faithfulness or steadfast love,
and (C)no knowledge of God in the land;
(D)there is swearing, lying, murder, stealing, and committing adultery;
they break all bounds, and (E)bloodshed follows bloodshed.
Therefore (F)the land mourns,
and all who dwell in it languish,
(G)and also the beasts of the field
and the birds of the heavens,
(H)and even the fish of the sea are taken away.

(I)Yet let no one contend,
and let none accuse,
for with you is (J)my contention, O priest.[a]
You shall stumble by day;
the prophet also shall stumble with you by night;
and I will destroy (K)your mother.
My people are destroyed (L)for lack of knowledge;
(M)because you have rejected knowledge,
I reject you (N)from being a priest to me.
And since you have forgotten the law of your God,
(O)I also will forget your children.

(P)The more they increased,
the more they sinned against me;
(Q)I will change their glory into shame.
(R)They feed on the sin[b] of my people;
they are greedy for their iniquity.
(S)And it shall be like people, like priest;
I will punish them for their ways
and repay them for their deeds.
10 (T)They shall eat, but not be satisfied;
they shall play the whore, but not multiply,
because they have forsaken the Lord
to cherish 11 whoredom, wine, and new wine,
which (U)take away the understanding.
12 My people (V)inquire of a piece of wood,
and their walking staff gives them oracles.
For (W)a spirit of whoredom has led them astray,
and they have left their God to play the whore.
13 (X)They sacrifice on the tops of the mountains
and burn offerings on the hills,
(Y)under oak, poplar, and terebinth,
because their shade is good.
Therefore your daughters play the whore,
and your brides commit adultery.
14 I will not punish your daughters when they play the whore,
nor your brides when they commit adultery;
for (Z)the men themselves go aside with prostitutes
and sacrifice with (AA)cult prostitutes,
and a people (AB)without understanding shall come to ruin.

15 Though you play the whore, O (AC)Israel,
let not (AD)Judah become guilty.
(AE)Enter not into (AF)Gilgal,
nor go up to (AG)Beth-aven,
and swear not, “As the Lord lives.”
16 Like a stubborn heifer,
Israel is stubborn;
can the Lord now feed them
like a lamb in a broad pasture?

17 (AH)Ephraim is joined to idols;
(AI)leave him alone.
18 When their drink is gone, they give themselves to whoring;
(AJ)their rulers[c] dearly love shame.
19 (AK)A wind has wrapped them[d] in its wings,
and they shall (AL)be ashamed because of their sacrifices.

Punishment Coming for Israel and Judah

(AM)Hear this, O priests!
Pay attention, O house of Israel!
Give ear, O house of the king!
For the judgment is for you;
for (AN)you have been a snare at Mizpah
and a net spread upon (AO)Tabor.
And (AP)the revolters (AQ)have gone deep into slaughter,
but (AR)I will discipline all of them.

(AS)I know Ephraim,
and Israel is not hidden from me;
for now, O Ephraim, you have played the whore;
Israel is defiled.
(AT)Their deeds do not permit them
to return to their God.
For (AU)the spirit of whoredom is within them,
and they know not the Lord.

(AV)The pride of Israel testifies to his face;[e]
Israel and (AW)Ephraim shall stumble in his guilt;
(AX)Judah also shall stumble with them.
(AY)With their flocks and herds they shall go
to seek the Lord,
(AZ)but they will not find him;
(BA)he has withdrawn from them.
(BB)They have dealt faithlessly with the Lord;
for they have borne alien children.
Now the new moon shall devour them with their fields.

(BC)Blow the horn in (BD)Gibeah,
the trumpet in (BE)Ramah.
Sound the alarm at (BF)Beth-aven;
we follow you,[f] O Benjamin!
Ephraim shall become a desolation
in the day of punishment;
among the tribes of Israel
I make known what is sure.
10 The princes of Judah have become
like (BG)those who move the landmark;
upon them I will pour out
my wrath like water.
11 Ephraim is (BH)oppressed, crushed in judgment,
because he was determined to go after filth.[g]
12 But I am (BI)like a moth to Ephraim,
and (BJ)like dry rot to the house of Judah.

13 When Ephraim saw his sickness,
and Judah (BK)his wound,
then Ephraim went (BL)to Assyria,
and sent to the great king.[h]
(BM)But he is not able to cure you
or heal (BN)your wound.
14 For I will be (BO)like a lion to (BP)Ephraim,
and like a young lion to the house of (BQ)Judah.
(BR)I, even I, will tear and go away;
I will carry off, and no one shall rescue.

15 (BS)I will return again to my place,
until they acknowledge their guilt and seek my face,
and (BT)in their distress earnestly seek me.

2 John

Greeting

(A)The elder to the elect lady and her children, (B)whom I love in truth, and not only I, but also all who (C)know (D)the truth, (E)because of the truth that abides in us and will be with us forever:

(F)Grace, mercy, and peace will be with us, from God the Father and from Jesus Christ the Father's Son, in truth and love.

Walking in Truth and Love

(G)I rejoiced greatly to find some of your children walking in the truth, just as we were commanded by the Father. And now I ask you, dear lady—(H)not as though I were writing you a new commandment, but the one we have had from the beginning—(I)that we love one another. And (J)this is love, that we walk according to his commandments; this is the commandment, just (K)as you have heard from the beginning, so that you should walk in it. For (L)many deceivers (M)have gone out into the world, (N)those who do not confess the coming of Jesus Christ in the flesh. Such a one is the deceiver and the antichrist. Watch yourselves, (O)so that you may not lose what we[a] have worked for, but (P)may win a full reward. Everyone who goes on ahead and does not abide in the teaching of Christ, (Q)does not have God. Whoever abides in the teaching (R)has both the Father and the Son. 10 If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, (S)do not receive him into your house or give him any greeting, 11 for whoever greets him (T)takes part in his wicked works.

Final Greetings

12 (U)Though I have much to write to you, I would rather not use paper and ink. (V)Instead I hope to come to you and talk face to face, (W)so that our joy may be complete.

13 The children of your elect sister greet you.

Psalm 125

The Lord Surrounds His People

A Song of (A)Ascents.

125 Those who (B)trust in the Lord are like Mount Zion,
which (C)cannot be moved, but abides forever.
As the mountains surround Jerusalem,
so (D)the Lord surrounds his people,
from this time forth and forevermore.
For (E)the scepter of wickedness shall not (F)rest
on (G)the land allotted to the righteous,
lest the righteous (H)stretch out
their hands to do wrong.
(I)Do good, O Lord, to those who are good,
and to those who are (J)upright in their hearts!
But those who (K)turn aside to their (L)crooked ways
the Lord will lead away with (M)evildoers!
(N)Peace be upon Israel!

Proverbs 29:9-11

If a wise man has an argument with a fool,
the fool only rages and laughs, and there is (A)no quiet.
10 Bloodthirsty men (B)hate one who is blameless
and seek the life of the upright.[a]
11 A fool gives full vent to his spirit,
but a wise man quietly holds it back.

Hosea 1:1-3:5, 1 John 5:1-21, Psalms 124:1-8, Proverbs 29:5-8

Today is the 5th day of December welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I’m Brian it’s great to be here with you today as we continue our journey and conclude another one of our weeks together. And in doing that we’re also opening up a new book and actually moving into the final grouping of books in the Old Testament and these are known as the minor prophets only. And when we talked of the major prophets, we…we clarified that major and minor doesn’t mean the level of importance. It has more to do with the length and how much material is in the text. So, the minor prophets are shorter, and they encompass the last 12 books of the Old Testament beginning here in Hosea and ending with the final book of the Old Testament, Malachi. So, we have…I mean it’s December 5th and we have 12 more books to go through in the Old Testament, and so that tells you, generally speaking, how quickly we’re gonna be moving. And we’ve been moving rather quickly through some of the shorter letters in the New Testament, which we will continue to do until we arrive at the final book in the New Testament which is the book of Revelation. And we’ll be arriving there. But now that we are moving into the minor prophets let’s talk about this first one. Hosea that we’re…that we’re gonna read.

Introduction to the book of Hosea:

Hosea probably lived somewhere in the vicinity of the eighth century BC, and he probably saw the disintegration of his own land, which was the northern kingdom of Israel. And we remember in the Scriptures the Assyrian Empire came in and conquered the northern kingdom, the northern 10 tribes of Israel and carried them into exile and they were dispersed. They’re known as the diaspora. They were never really cohesive tribes ever again. They disappeared from history as tribes. And it’s likely that Hosea was there and saw this. There are many scholars that believe that Hosea’s prophecies were eventually collected together in written form in the southern kingdom of Judah after the Assyrian conquest was over. But like so many of the other things in the Bible, we don’t know for sure these…this is just where…where we are in looking at where did these texts come…like what’s their pedigree? So much is unknown. What is known is what’s in the contents of the book of Hosea. And the theme of marriage is in the book of Hosea, not so much relating to man and woman, but more relating to a covenantal relationship with God. And this won’t be the first time that marriage has been used as an illustration, but it’s perhaps the most potent. So, often we hear the prophets coming and speaking of adultery. The adulterer, the covenant breaker, Israel, God’s people, the covenant breaker or the spiritual idolater. And we understand that people were chasing after other gods besides the most-high God and giving themselves in worship, giving their hearts, giving their lives, giving their agendas, giving their money, giving their goods to false gods. And God the most-high God considered this adulteress. We read these things in the Bible, and often just kind of move beyond them just kind of read through them without understanding the implications, but adultery is something that the implications are evident. Some of us in the sound of my voice have been through this, but nobody doesn’t understand what we’re talking about here. And, so, if your spouse gives herself or himself, gives their body to somebody else, gives their heart to somebody else, their motivations begin this shift to somebody else while they’re married to you then this is…I don’t even know…I mean…it’s disorienting, it’s hurtful, it’s painful, it’s torture, it just brings up the worst of the worst inside of us. It brings depression and anxiety and what’s going to come next and what about the children…it’s just an awful, awful thing and we can understand that in our own lives’ context. Hosea helps us understand that this is how God looks at His people when they give themselves to something that is false, choosing something that is false, and giving their heart and life and worship to something else besides the one that loves them passionately, the spouse in this…in this analogy. Then we begin to understand God’s reaction, we begin to understand the things that he says to the prophets, the betrayal of His people. It’s like being betrayed by your spouse. And, so, we hear the language of…of…of a lover who is heartbroken and longs for his lost love, and longs for a way to be restored to the one that he loves. And Hosea presents this more clearly and more poignantly than, at least in my opinion, anywhere else in the Scriptures, partly because God asks Hosea to make his life a living prophecy. So, as will see, Hosea is instructed by the Lord to marry a prostitute and her name is Gomer. And Gomer represents the idolatrous harlotry prostitution of Israel, spiritual prostitution. And, so, Hosea and Gomer have children together, and then God instructs Hosea that each child is to be given a prophetic name that speaks directly to Israel. And then Gomer, Hosea’s wife that was a former prostitute is then again unfaithful to Hosea. So, he divorces her, and this represents God casting Israel away. And then Hosea’s told to go back in pursuit of Gomer, once again. And he had to eventually buy her back. So, this woman who had been his spouse who had had his children who had formerly been a harlot and went back into adultery had to be bought back, which she was by Hosea. And this represents just how far God is willing to go to be reunited, to be restored to those that He loves. And, so, as we read through this, if we will just consider our own lives, look at our own lives and the ways that we have been a betrayer, the ways that we have committed the same type of adultery. Maybe we’re not bowing down to a statue, but whatever it is we are giving ourselves to, whatever we are looking for to bring us life, whatever we are giving our heart to and our time to and our focus to can be an idol. So, let’s begin. Hosea chapters 1 through 3 and we’re reading from the Christian Standard Bible this week.

Prayer:

Father, we thank You for Your word. We thank You for another week and we just look at the calendar and observe there’s only three more weekends in this year. And, so, we have a ways to go and we have a lot of territory to cover, and we’re going to be covering massive territory in a quick amount of time as we move toward the conclusion of the Bible. And then we know we just start over again. This is the rhythm of our lives, but we mark this. We see this. We’re here now encountering the first weekend in this month of December and moving toward the second Sunday in Advent. So, we know where we are, but we also know how much we need You and the imagery in the book of Hosea today, it seems to show us how much You want us, how much You desire us and how much pain it brings when we are unfaithful. And we look to You and acknowledge that You have always been faithful. And, so, our own lives, our own actions can condemn us, and yet You talk of restoration, You talk of being reunited. You talk of coming home again. And, so, this is where we want to be. We don’t ever want to wander. We actually don’t ever want to wander, ever, ever, ever again. And, so, now that we have this imagery that when we do wonder when we do give ourselves to something else, thinking that it will be our security or that it will be our life, or that it will be the thing that fulfills us we are turning away and being unfaithful. So, come Holy Spirit we have no desire for this to be a part of our story ever again. We cannot do that without Your guidance. And yes, indeed we have to pay attention. And yes, indeed we have to stay awake to what You are doing. And yes, indeed we are grateful that Your word counsels us in that direction, but we have to do the work and participate, as we have learned from the letters recently. We can say whatever we want. Its ultimately what we live that is saying what we believe. And, so, come Holy Spirit, lead us into all truth and help us be awake and aware to see and respond to it. We pray this in the name of Jesus our Savior. Amen.

Announcements:

dailyaudiobible.com is home base it is…that’s the website for the Global Fire, for the Daily Audio Bible, for the community here, for…for everything that’s happening around here. So, check that out.

Its Christmas times so we’ve been talking about that for the last week I guess and just talkin’ about how…well…we’ve passed the international shipping deadline. We’re still good domestically. We don’t have a Christmas box this year, but we tried to make it so you can make your own Christmas box and Just browse and peruse the resources that are available in the Daily Audio Bible Shop, everything from things to write with, things to read or things to listen to. Check out the family Christmas album that we released a couple years ago. That makes a fantastic soundtrack for the season. The Christmas album is called family Christmas and you can look it up like on Google play or iTunes or anywhere you can stream music, Spotify, whatever. Just look for family Christmas and look for my name Brian Hardin and you should find it. And we released this a couple years ago as…well…as a companion to the season. And if you’ve been around here this long and gone all the way through the Bible this year you see the rhythms. There are rhythms in the week and brand-new shiny sparkly new weeks and there rhythms in the month and this…just the rhythm of life centered around the fact that we are going to devote a certain portion of the day, small as it might be to staying in the rhythm and allowing God’s word to be a part of our lives and staying in community as we move through the Scriptures. And, so, we released really really contemplative, lushly orchestrated Christmas album a couple years ago that’s really meant to be that…that go to album when you want to shut off all the lights except for the Christmas tree, right, or just whatever Christmas lights you have…just maybe a fireplace…maybe you don’t but, you know what I’m talking about. You shut off all the lights and then just…the glow and the calm and the piece and the quiet can descend upon you. This is meant to be the soundtrack for those moments. So, check that out. You can stream it, like I said, on Spotify Apple mucic, Google play or wherever, or you can get a physical copy of it as well as a digital…digital version at the Daily Audio Bible Shop. And there’s a bunch of other resources. The Klean Kanteens that we have talked about, although I gotta tell if those survive past the first of the week, like I think they’ll be gone by then. So, if you’re thinking about it, don’t wait. They’ll be gone. We only get those rarely and so they go pretty quickly when we do. The Klean Kanteens are there. The God of Your Story, the written resource that is a January 1st through December 31st devotional that contains some of the gold of all of these years. And this is year 16 of the things that we’ve talked about as we’ve gone to the Scriptures. And, so, it is a great companion to the Daily Audio Bible. It’s a great invitation to the Daily Audio Bible and it’s a great one-year resource for people who just want to read through the Bible, but don’t always…aren’t always able to grasp the context. And, so, the God of your story does a really good job in written form of what we do here every day. So, that’s just a handful of resources, but check those out. If you spend $40 or more in the Daily Audio Bible shop. We will include in your order and you’ll see it show up in your order if you pass the $40, the Daily Audio Bible Christmas ornament for 2020 and it’s got Daily Audio Bible 2020 on it and its got our words for the year, which were “Vision” and “Settle”. And they are right there on the ornaments. So, check that out in the Daily Audio Bible Shop.

I thank you humbly and deeply for your partnership here as we approach the end of the year. Cannot thank you enough. We can’t be here if we’re not here together. And, so, I thank you. Community Prayer and Praise:

Hello DAB family this is Brother Ox praying for Carla Jean and her family. Father God we hear Carla Jeans tearful request for prayer. Her husband has come under heavy affliction and with his diabetic ketoacidosis condition as well as the new diagnosis of COVID- 19 and he’s in ICU. We’ve heard how she and her son had to…to shake him to…to even go to the hospital and now with them…them demonstrating system symptoms of Covid themselves they sounded rattled Lord. I lift up my sister right now along with many others in the DAB family undoubtably declaring that COVId-19 and diabetic ketoacidosis are names and those names will kneel before the name of Jesus. And, so, we declare such right now in Jesus’ name that these symptoms will leave this family, that they and I…I pray to encourage them that they need not fear what they see, that they need not be caught in the circumstance but to fix their eyes on the Lord who is good and is faithful to see us through. He is our shelter. He is our refuge. We replace ourselves under the shadow of the most-high God and we know that we are dearly loved and dearly protected. And, so, we lift up our prayers to our good, good Father. May she and her family be encouraged and lifted up. Stay well Carla. We love you.

Hey Daily Audio Bible family it’s Nobody Gets Left Behind in Colorado. It’s funny, I put a reminder on my phone to remind me once a month to just put a log on the campfire and just connect with the family from all over the world. I always like to think of it as a preview into heaven and how it says that there’ll be multitudes glorifying God. So, I just wanted to let you all know that we have about 14 to 16 people in Colorado that are reading the Daily Audio Bible together and this year we’re gonna have a year end Bible reading celebration and gonna go through the Daily Audio Bible Shop today and find some unique gifts to give out and I just want just celebrate being one big, you know, family and us throwing one big giant log on the fire from Colorado to end this year in celebration just because God is so good and all glory be to Him. In Jesus’ name. Amen. Love you guys. Hope you’re all doing well. I’m praying for you all I listen to your prayers. You all mean so much to me.

Hi, my beautiful family this is Suzanne calling from Albuquerque. Michaela from Gloucester, I have been overjoyed to hear your voice again. I missed you. I know you mentioned you had been going through some…some difficult times and I’m not sure what was going on there, but I am so glad to hear you again and welcome back to us. We love you very much. Michaela your heart is a beautiful example to all of us. You open your arms, your heart, the arms of your heart so big that you often pray for…for people in other religions, people in countries we don’t often hear that much about and you just…your heart is huge and I just…I’m just so grateful for your example of Jesus’ love. And I’m very happy to hear your voice again.

Hey Daily Audio Bible it’s Christy from Ohio. I just came back from a couple hour trip for my parents back to where I live, and we had our first like snowstorm of the year. So, the last hour or so the snow was coming down and already sticking which has kind of made me think that, yeah, it seems like a lot of the US is getting a lot of their first big snow of the season, which made me think of all of the truckers out there and it’s always important to pray for our truckers. But just thinking now especially with, you know, how people make, you know, other drivers just make more mistakes the first couple snows and there’s more accidents. And, you know, truckers have to be out there no matter what. So, just thinking of you Terry the Trucker and I know there’s probably a lot of other truckers too that listen. I think Jeanette from Oklahoma City, I think you used to be a trucker. I might be wrong. But anyways just wanted to let you guys know that I’m thinking of the truckers out there and, yeah, we should all just, yeah, be in prayer for their safety. So, all right. Talk to guys later.

Hi this is Goldberry in the Sequatchie Valley of Tennessee. I am a first time caller and I’ve been listening since March and I wanted to say thank you to Brian and for this wonderful ministry and for the Daily Audio Bible family that I have come to feel a part of. I am so grateful for the beautiful hearts for Jesus that I hear every day and for the prayers that are requested and prayed for each day. I’m calling to ask for your prayers for my daughter. She is 21. She has an eating disorder. She knows the Lord and loves him dearly but is really struggling with this. She is married and her and her husband lost a baby. He was…had a genetic problem and he…she carried him to term. Even though they said that she could abort him they carried him to term, and he died shortly after he was born. This has been a tragic loss for my daughter and for our whole family. My daughter would like to have another baby but there’s a 25% chance that this could recur. So, I wanted to ask that you would pray that my daughter would be healed of her eating disorder and would be able to have a healthy baby and also that her and her husband would be able to stop vaping. Thank you so much for your prayers. God bless you all.

The Daily Audio Bible Reading for Saturday December 5, 2020 (NIV)

Hosea 1-3

The word of the Lord that came to Hosea son of Beeri during the reigns of Uzziah,(A) Jotham,(B) Ahaz,(C) and Hezekiah,(D) kings of Judah, and of Jeroboam(E) son of Jehoash, king of Israel.

Hosea’s Marriage and Children

When the Lord first spoke to Hosea, he said this to him:

Go and marry a woman of promiscuity,(F)
and have children of promiscuity,
for the land is committing blatant acts of promiscuity
by abandoning the Lord.

So he went and married Gomer daughter of Diblaim, and she conceived and bore him a son.(G) Then the Lord said to him:

Name him Jezreel,[a](H) for in a little while
I will bring the bloodshed of Jezreel(I)
on the house of Jehu(J)
and put an end to the kingdom of the house of Israel.
On that day I will break the bow of Israel(K)
in Jezreel Valley.(L)

She conceived again and gave birth to a daughter, and the Lord said to him:

Name her Lo-ruhamah,[b]
for I will no longer have compassion
on the house of Israel.
I will certainly take them away.
But I will have compassion on the house of Judah,(M)
and I will deliver them by the Lord their God.(N)
I will not deliver them by bow, sword, or war,
or by horses and cavalry.(O)

After Gomer had weaned Lo-ruhamah, she conceived and gave birth to a son. Then the Lord said:

Name him Lo-ammi,[c]
for you are not my people,
and I will not be your God.[d](P)
10 Yet the number of the Israelites
will be like the sand of the sea,(Q)
which cannot be measured or counted.
And in the place where they were told:
You are not my people,
they will be called: Sons of the living God.(R)
11 And the Judeans and the Israelites
will be gathered together.(S)
They will appoint for themselves a single ruler(T)
and go up from[e] the land.
For the day of Jezreel(U) will be great.
Call[f] your brothers: My People
and your sisters: Compassion.

Israel’s Adultery Rebuked

Rebuke your mother; rebuke her.(V)
For she is not my wife and I am not her husband.(W)
Let her remove the promiscuous look from her face(X)
and her adultery from between her breasts.
Otherwise, I will strip her naked(Y)
and expose her as she was on the day of her birth.
I will make her like a desert(Z)
and like a parched land,
and I will let her die of thirst.(AA)
I will have no compassion on her children(AB)
because they are the children of promiscuity.
Yes, their mother is promiscuous;
she conceived them and acted shamefully.(AC)
For she thought, “I will follow my lovers,(AD)
the men who give me my food and water,
my wool and flax, my oil and drink.”(AE)
Therefore, this is what I will do:
I will block her[g] way(AF) with thorns;(AG)
I will enclose her with a wall,
so that she cannot find her paths.(AH)
She will pursue her lovers but not catch them;(AI)
she will look for them but not find them.
Then she will think,
“I will go back to my former husband,(AJ)
for then it was better for me than now.”(AK)
She does not recognize(AL)
that it is I who gave her the grain,(AM)
the new wine, and the fresh oil.
I lavished silver and gold on her,
which they used for Baal.
Therefore, I will take back my grain in its time(AN)
and my new wine in its season;
I will take away my wool and linen,
which were to cover her nakedness.
10 Now I will expose her shame(AO)
in the sight of her lovers,
and no one will rescue her from my power.
11 I will put an end to all her celebrations:(AP)
her feasts,(AQ) New Moons,(AR) and Sabbaths—
all her festivals.
12 I will devastate her vines and fig trees.(AS)
She thinks that these are her wages
that her lovers have given her.
I will turn them into a thicket,(AT)
and the wild animals will eat them.(AU)
13 And I will punish her for the days of the Baals,(AV)
to which she burned incense.(AW)
She put on her rings and her jewelry(AX)
and followed her lovers,
but she forgot me.(AY)

This is the Lord’s declaration.

Israel’s Adultery Forgiven

14 Therefore, I am going to persuade her,
lead her to the wilderness,(AZ)
and speak tenderly to her.[h]
15 There I will give her vineyards back to her(BA)
and make the Valley of Achor[i](BB)
into a gateway of hope.
There she will respond as she did
in the days of her youth,(BC)
as in the day she came out of the land of Egypt.
16 In that day—
this is the Lord’s declaration—
you will call me “my husband”(BD)
and no longer call me “my Baal.”[j]
17 For I will remove the names of the Baals
from her mouth;
they will no longer be remembered by their names.
18 On that day I will make a covenant for them
with the wild animals, the birds of the sky,
and the creatures that crawl on the ground.(BE)
I will shatter bow, sword,
and weapons of war in the land[k](BF)
and will enable the people to rest securely.(BG)
19 I will take you to be my wife forever.(BH)
I will take you to be my wife in righteousness,
justice, love, and compassion.(BI)
20 I will take you to be my wife in faithfulness,
and you will know the Lord.(BJ)
21 On that day I will respond(BK)
this is the Lord’s declaration.
I will respond to the sky,
and it will respond to the earth.
22 The earth will respond to the grain,(BL)
the new wine, and the fresh oil,
and they will respond to Jezreel.
23 I will sow her[l] in the land for myself,(BM)
and I will have compassion(BN)
on Lo-ruhamah;
I will say to Lo-ammi:(BO)
You are my people,(BP)
and he will say, “You are my God.”

Waiting for Restoration

Then the Lord said to me, “Go again; show love to a woman who is loved by another man and is an adulteress,(BQ) just as the Lord loves the Israelites though they turn to other gods and love raisin cakes.”(BR)

So I bought her for fifteen shekels of silver and nine bushels of barley.[m][n](BS) I said to her, “You are to live with me many days. You must not be promiscuous or belong to any man, and I will act the same way toward you.”

For the Israelites must live many days without king or prince,(BT) without sacrifice(BU) or sacred pillar,(BV) and without ephod(BW) or household idols.(BX) Afterward, the people of Israel will return(BY) and seek the Lord their God and David their king.(BZ) They will come with awe to the Lord(CA) and to his goodness in the last days.

1 John 5

Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God,(A) and everyone who loves the Father[a] also loves the one born of him. This is how we know that we love God’s children: when we love God and obey[b] his commands. For this is what love for God is: to keep his commands. And his commands are not a burden,(B) because everyone who has been born of God conquers the world. This is the victory that has conquered the world: our faith.

The Certainty of God’s Testimony

Who is the one who conquers the world(C) but the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?(D) Jesus Christ—he is the one who came by water and blood, not by water only, but by water(E) and by blood.(F) And the Spirit is the one who testifies,(G) because the Spirit is the truth. For there are three that testify:[c](H) the Spirit,(I) the water, and the blood(J)—and these three are in agreement. If we accept human testimony, God’s testimony(K) is greater, because it is God’s testimony that he has given about his Son. 10 The one who believes in the Son of God has this testimony within himself. The one who does not believe God has made him a liar,(L) because he has not believed in the testimony God has given about his Son. 11 And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 12 The one who has the Son has life.(M) The one who does not have the Son of God does not have life. 13 I have written these things to you who believe in the name(N) of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life.

Effective Prayer

14 This is the confidence we have before him: If we ask(O) anything according to his will, he hears us.(P) 15 And if we know that he hears whatever we ask,(Q) we know that we have what we have asked of him.(R)

16 If anyone sees a fellow believer[d] committing a sin that doesn’t lead to death, he should ask, and God will give life to him—to those who commit sin that doesn’t lead to death. There is sin[e] that leads to death. I am not saying he should pray about that. 17 All unrighteousness is sin, and there is sin that doesn’t lead to death.

Conclusion

18 We know that everyone who has been born of God does not sin, but the one who is born of God keeps him,[f](S) and the evil one does not touch him. 19 We know that we are of God, and the whole world is under the sway of the evil one. 20 And we know that the Son of God has come(T) and has given us understanding so that we may know the true one.[g] We are in the true one—that is, in his Son, Jesus Christ.(U) He is the true God and eternal life.

21 Little children, guard yourselves from idols.

Psalm 124

Psalm 124

The Lord Is on Our Side

A song of ascents. Of David.

If the Lord had not been on our side—
let Israel say—
if the Lord had not been on our side(A)
when people attacked us,(B)
then they would have swallowed us alive
in their burning anger against us.(C)
Then the water would have engulfed us;
the torrent would have swept over us;
the raging water would have swept over us.(D)

Blessed be the Lord,
who has not let us be ripped apart by their teeth.(E)
We have escaped like a bird from the hunter’s net;
the net is torn, and we have escaped.(F)
Our help is in the name of the Lord,
the Maker of heaven and earth.(G)

Proverbs 29:5-8

A person who flatters his neighbor
spreads a net for his feet.(A)

An evil person is caught by sin,(B)
but the righteous one sings and rejoices.(C)

The righteous person knows the rights[a] of the poor,(D)
but the wicked one does not understand these concerns.

Mockers inflame a city,(E)
but the wise turn away anger.

Daniel 11:36-12:13, 1 John 4:1-21, Psalms 123:1-4, Proverbs 29:2-4

Today is the 4th day of December welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I’m Brian it is a joy to be here with you as we…well…prepare to round out another week. This week we’ve been reading from the Christian Standard Bible. That’s what we’ll continue to do until the week is up, which…which is tomorrow. But we are here now, and the next step forward leads us back into the book of Daniel. Today we will read Daniel chapter 11 verse 36 through 12 verse 13.

Commentary:

Okay. So, yesterday when we were reading to the letter of first John we just formulated questions that were answered in the letter in our reading from yesterday and what began to emerge was this theme that love is non-negotiable in the kingdom of God. In fact, without love there’s no way to connect with God. Can we let that sink in for a second? Like I know sometimes we talk about these themes that get talked about often and they become cliché. And, so, we kind of tune out. We…we listen dimly. We think it’s more of a reminder than something that’s like a full front and center. And, so, we listen, and it just kind of passes by and it serves as a reminder, “yeah, I’m supposed to live and love. I’m supposed to love the Lord. I gotta do better. I gotta get around to that kind of thing”, when what’s being talked about here is front and center, like there is no knowing God without love. And loving one another is the evidence that we know God. Can we let that sink in? Can we let that be front and center because it’s absolutely paramount? So, I actually want to revisit again a portion of what we read today because the theme is relentless at this point and…and as we turn the page in today’s reading it’s not letting go. So, if this first letter of John we find in the Bible in the New Testament is being front and center and direct, then we should give it our full attention. And, so, I’m gonna reread some famous passages here. But can we put this front and center? Like, can we not listen dimly? Can we be present? Can this overlay our lives and then reveal to us what we must do from here? And, so, I quote. “Dear friends let us love one another, because love is from God, and everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. The one who does not love does not know God, because God is love. God’s love was revealed among us in this way, God sent His one and only Son into the world so that we might live through Him. Love consists in this, not that we loved God but that he loved us and sent His son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. Dear friends, if God loved us in this way, we also must love one another. No one has ever seen God. If we love one another, God remains in us and His love is made complete in us. This is how we know that we remain in Him and He in us, he has given us of His Spirit, and we have seen, and we testify that the Father has sent His Son as the world’s Savior. Whoever confesses that Jesus is the son of God, God remains in Him and He in God. And we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. God is love and the one who remains in love remains in God and God remains in him. In this love is made complete with us so that we may have confidence in the day of judgment, because as He is, so also are we in this world. There is no fear in love. Instead perfect love drives out fear, because fear involves punishment. So, the one who fears is not complete in love. We love because He first loved us. If anyone says, I love God, and yet hates his brother or sister, he is a liar. For the person who does not love his brother or sister whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen. And we have this command from Him, the one who loves God must also love his brother and sister.

Prayer:

Father, there’s nothing else I can say. You have said it clearly in Your word that's…it’s clear…it's…it’s not ambiguous. It’s right front and center that this is the bed rock, that without this, without love, without love into the world for our brothers and sisters, without love that is active without actively loving people that we don’t love, without loving people that we don’t agree with, without actively bringing Your love into this world we are wasting our time. And, so, come Holy Spirit, reawaken us here in these last weeks of this year to why we are here and what we are to do because our culture does everything possible to make us self-absorbed and self-focused, not because we need to be lifted up because that’s the way to get our money. And we have been deceived. We are here to actively love the world and to bring light into the darkness. And this happens by our very lives, not by our very words this happens by the way we live our lives. It doesn’t really even take a lot of words. It goes to the transformation happening within us. When this transformation reaches the tipping point, and there’s no going back and we have been transformed and we are no longer who we were then we begin to see things as You see things, and how You hurt for the world is how we hurt for the world and the compassion and the long-suffering that You have for the people of the earth we have that long-suffering compassion, even for those that we absolutely do not see eye to eye with. Love covers a multitude of sins You say in Your word. Love is such a central thing and we just coast by it. We just live into it dimly because it’s ubiquitous. We all know this is how it’s supposed to go but it’s time to become who we are supposed to be instead of struggling, struggling, struggling for the next decade trying to figure it out. It begins here. Love, love, love. Actively love as God has loved us. So, come Holy Spirit, this is not even remotely possible in our own strength. We can organize it and work it out for a half a day. We may be able to bite our tongue for even a week, but to be transformed until the default posture is first love instead of some sort of defensive position that we first, that we lead with love, we can’t do this without Your Holy Spirit. And it’s not like You’ve been withholding. And, so, we have not been paying attention, and that we have been living dimly into this. Now we are awake. Holy Spirit come, show us how to love. May we actively love through the rest of this season and into the new year we pray. In the name of Jesus, we pray this. Amen.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Hi everyone, this is Harold from St. Louis. I’m just calling in for a prayer request for my son Jonathan who is in Houston. He was taken to the hospital last night. He’s a type I diabetic. Basically, his sugar was over 300. He’s got a bit of an infection in his foot. They’re doing an MRI of his foot now, but they’ve already told him it looks like they might have to amputate his foot off. Just praying for him for strength and for healthiness and for courage and I just thank you everybody who will take the time out to pray for him.

Hey DAB family its Sky and Rebecca team Skybecca from Michigan with a funky black van named rhino. We just wanted to celebrate with you today that we’ve made it by the grace and strength of God to our seventh-year anniversary today. Yay. All praise and glory to God for all He’s doing in our marriage. We want to say a prayer of gratitude and blessing for all those who are faithful to their spouses and to God’s refining fire through their marriage. We would love prayers as we are leaving December 9th in our self-contained van and putting our few belongings in storage once again after losing everything in a large storage fire a couple years ago moving to Michigan to care for my dad. We are reminded again it’s good to lighten the load as we are only tent dwellers on this earth. So, Lord I pray protection over our belongings and for our family that we are leaving behind. I also pray for protection for us from COVID as we travel and safety over our van. And I would also like to pray continued healing for my older sister’s family, my aunt, Sue and Uncle Tim and my friends Sherry and Scott who are still recovering from COVID. And then also Lord we’d love prayers for all that we are to meet and share stories with and pray for along the way. And then last but not least love to have prayer for a new friend named Nina and her young family, her husband Johnny and the three little ones. Johnny’s recovering from a brain aneurysm and he needs surgery for another one. And, so, my prayer is that the Holy Spirit and Jesus would heal that aneurysm and it would disappear in the name of Jesus altogether.

Hey this is Micah in Awe in Kansas City. I just wanted to give a shout out to Sally or Stelly, I couldn’t hear your name that clear. They played your message on November 30th and you said you’re new to the DAB family. I just wanted to welcome you. I’ve been…I’ve only been here about a year and ½ but I love it here and I love my DAB family. All you other new listeners whether you called in or not, welcome and it’s great to have you and I know a lot of you are praying without calling in. It’s awesome to know that there’s praying happening…happening every day all the time.

Hello everybody it’s God’s Smile here. I’ve got some wonderful news for you. So, Maria had another attack, my helper. She had another horrible demonic experience and she turned to me and I was able to encourage her in the Lord and said I was praying and…and gave her a verse, a life verse for her to speak. And I just…just thank God for all that He’s doing in this young girl’s life. And I gave her the Bible and I showed her around it and I wrote her a card and so she…she read that and I gave her…I wrote down a lot of verses so that she can look up salvation. Not all of them of course because it’s…it’s a treat to find them yourself isn’t it? And when she went home, she’d only been home half an hour and she sent me a WhatsApp picture of the Bible verses she’s been reading. So, you know…she’s not fully got Jesus in her…insider her yet. I have challenged her. I said, do ask him into your life Maria. What have you got to lose? We’ve got nothing to lose and everything to gain, haven’t we? So, I don’t think it’s going to be long. I really don’t. I’m so thankful for…just being able to share Jesus. It is the reason I live you know. It is the reason I live, to give his love and to reach those who are lost. So, please hold her and please thank Jesus for her life. Please cover her in prayer while we are dealing with this but I said to her…I said to her just quickly, when Jesus isn’t inside of you Maria the evil will say it and they will have __ . Anyway, times ticking away again. I’m so happy. Kiss kiss everybody.

Hello DAB, I just wanted to say hi to I think your name was Jaelyn, the lovely young person who sang that beautiful song to us and it aired on December 1st. I just want to thank you because that…that really gave me hope, you know, that we worry so much about the future but if the future includes kids like you who sing their prayers over a family of believers there’s hope. So, thank you. And I love you family. Bye.
