Genesis 16:1-18:15

Hagar and Ishmael

16 Now Sarai,^(A) Abram’s wife, had borne him no children.^(B) But she had an Egyptian slave^(C) named Hagar;^(D) ²so she said to Abram, “The Lord has kept me from having children.^(E) Go, sleep with my slave; perhaps I can build a family through her.”^(F)

Abram agreed to what Sarai said. ³So after Abram had been living in Canaan^(G) ten years,^(H) Sarai his wife took her Egyptian slave Hagar and gave her to her husband to be his wife. ⁴He slept with Hagar,^(I) and she conceived.

When she knew she was pregnant, she began to despise her mistress.^(J) ⁵Then Sarai said to Abram, “You are responsible for the wrong I am suffering. I put my slave in your arms, and now that she knows she is pregnant, she despises me. May the Lord judge between you and me.”^(K)

⁶“Your slave is in your hands,^(L)” Abram said. “Do with her whatever you think best.” Then Sarai mistreated^(M) Hagar; so she fled from her.

⁷The angel of the Lord^(N) found Hagar near a spring^(O) in the desert; it was the spring that is beside the road to Shur.^(P) ⁸And he said, “Hagar,^(Q) slave of Sarai, where have you come from, and where are you going?”^(R)

“I’m running away from my mistress Sarai,” she answered.

⁹Then the angel of the Lord told her, “Go back to your mistress and submit to her.” ¹⁰The angel added, “I will increase your descendants so much that they will be too numerous to count.”^(S)

¹¹The angel of the Lord^(T) also said to her:

“You are now pregnant
and you will give birth to a son.^(U)
You shall name him^(V) Ishmael,^[a]^(W)
for the Lord has heard of your misery.^(X)
¹²He will be a wild donkey^(Y) of a man;
his hand will be against everyone
and everyone’s hand against him,
and he will live in hostility
toward^[b] all his brothers.^(Z)”

¹³She gave this name to the Lord who spoke to her: “You are the God who sees me,^(AA)” for she said, “I have now seen^[c] the One who sees me.”^(AB) ¹⁴That is why the well^(AC) was called Beer Lahai Roi^[d];^(AD) it is still there, between Kadesh^(AE) and Bered.

¹⁵So Hagar^(AF) bore Abram a son,^(AG) and Abram gave the name Ishmael^(AH) to the son she had borne. ¹⁶Abram was eighty-six years old^(AI) when Hagar bore him Ishmael.

The Covenant of Circumcision

17 When Abram was ninety-nine years old,^(AJ) the Lord appeared to him^(AK) and said, “I am God Almighty^[e];^(AL) walk before me faithfully and be blameless.^(AM) ²Then I will make my covenant between me and you^(AN) and will greatly increase your numbers.”^(AO)

³Abram fell facedown,^(AP) and God said to him, ⁴“As for me, this is my covenant with you:^(AQ) You will be the father of many nations.^(AR) ⁵No longer will you be called Abram^[f]; your name will be Abraham,^[g]^(AS) for I have made you a father of many nations.^(AT) ⁶I will make you very fruitful;^(AU) I will make nations of you, and kings will come from you.^(AV) ⁷I will establish my covenant^(AW) as an everlasting covenant^(AX) between me and you and your descendants after you for the generations to come, to be your God^(AY) and the God of your descendants after you.^(AZ) ⁸The whole land of Canaan,^(BA) where you now reside as a foreigner,^(BB) I will give as an everlasting possession to you and your descendants after you;^(BC) and I will be their God.^(BD)”

⁹Then God said to Abraham, “As for you, you must keep my covenant,^(BE) you and your descendants after you for the generations to come.^(BF) ¹⁰This is my covenant with you and your descendants after you, the covenant you are to keep: Every male among you shall be circumcised.^(BG) ¹¹You are to undergo circumcision,^(BH) and it will be the sign of the covenant^(BI) between me and you. ¹²For the generations to come^(BJ) every male among you who is eight days old must be circumcised,^(BK) including those born in your household or bought with money from a foreigner—those who are not your offspring. ¹³Whether born in your household or bought with your money, they must be circumcised.^(BL) My covenant in your flesh is to be an everlasting covenant.^(BM) ¹⁴Any uncircumcised male, who has not been circumcised^(BN) in the flesh, will be cut off from his people;^(BO) he has broken my covenant.^(BP)”

¹⁵God also said to Abraham, “As for Sarai^(BQ) your wife, you are no longer to call her Sarai; her name will be Sarah.^(BR) ¹⁶I will bless her and will surely give you a son by her.^(BS) I will bless her so that she will be the mother of nations;^(BT) kings of peoples will come from her.”

¹⁷Abraham fell facedown;^(BU) he laughed^(BV) and said to himself, “Will a son be born to a man a hundred years old?^(BW) Will Sarah bear a child at the age of ninety?”^(BX) ¹⁸And Abraham said to God, “If only Ishmael^(BY) might live under your blessing!”^(BZ)

¹⁹Then God said, “Yes, but your wife Sarah will bear you a son,^(CA) and you will call him Isaac.^[h]^(CB) I will establish my covenant with him^(CC) as an everlasting covenant^(CD) for his descendants after him. ²⁰And as for Ishmael, I have heard you: I will surely bless him; I will make him fruitful and will greatly increase his numbers.^(CE) He will be the father of twelve rulers,^(CF) and I will make him into a great nation.^(CG) ²¹But my covenant^(CH) I will establish with Isaac, whom Sarah will bear to you^(CI) by this time next year.”^(CJ) ²²When he had finished speaking with Abraham, God went up from him.^(CK)

²³On that very day Abraham took his son Ishmael and all those born in his household^(CL) or bought with his money, every male in his household, and circumcised them, as God told him.^(CM) ²⁴Abraham was ninety-nine years old^(CN) when he was circumcised,^(CO) ²⁵and his son Ishmael^(CP) was thirteen; ²⁶Abraham and his son Ishmael were both circumcised on that very day. ²⁷And every male in Abraham’s household^(CQ), including those born in his household or bought from a foreigner, was circumcised with him.

The Three Visitors

18 The Lord appeared to Abraham^(CR) near the great trees of Mamre^(CS) while he was sitting at the entrance to his tent^(CT) in the heat of the day. ²Abraham looked up^(CU) and saw three men^(CV) standing nearby. When he saw them, he hurried from the entrance of his tent to meet them and bowed low to the ground.^(CW)

³He said, “If I have found favor in your eyes,^(CX) my lord,^[i] do not pass your servant^(CY) by. ⁴Let a little water be brought, and then you may all wash your feet^(CZ) and rest under this tree. ⁵Let me get you something to eat,^(DA) so you can be refreshed and then go on your way—now that you have come to your servant.”

“Very well,” they answered, “do as you say.”

⁶So Abraham hurried into the tent to Sarah. “Quick,” he said, “get three seahs^[j] of the finest flour and knead it and bake some bread.”^(DB)

⁷Then he ran to the herd and selected a choice, tender calf^(DC) and gave it to a servant, who hurried to prepare it. ⁸He then brought some curds^(DD) and milk^(DE) and the calf that had been prepared, and set these before them.^(DF) While they ate, he stood near them under a tree.

⁹“Where is your wife Sarah?”^(DG) they asked him.

“There, in the tent,^(DH)” he said.

¹⁰Then one of them said, “I will surely return to you about this time next year,^(DI) and Sarah your wife will have a son.”^(DJ)

Now Sarah was listening at the entrance to the tent, which was behind him. ¹¹Abraham and Sarah were already very old,^(DK) and Sarah was past the age of childbearing.^(DL) ¹²So Sarah laughed^(DM) to herself as she thought, “After I am worn out and my lord^(DN) is old, will I now have this pleasure?”

¹³Then the Lord said to Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh and say, ‘Will I really have a child, now that I am old?’^(DO) ¹⁴Is anything too hard for the Lord?^(DP) I will return to you at the appointed time next year,^(DQ) and Sarah will have a son.”^(DR)

¹⁵Sarah was afraid, so she lied and said, “I did not laugh.”

But he said, “Yes, you did laugh.”

Matthew 6:1-24

Giving to the Needy

6 “Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them.^(A) If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven.

²“So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. ³But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, ⁴so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.^(B)

Prayer^(C)

⁵“And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing^(D) in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. ⁶But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father,^(E) who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. ⁷And when you pray, do not keep on babbling^(F) like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words.^(G) ⁸Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need^(H) before you ask him.

⁹“This, then, is how you should pray:

“‘Our Father^(I) in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
¹⁰your kingdom^(J) come,
your will be done,^(K)
on earth as it is in heaven.
¹¹Give us today our daily bread.^(L)
¹²And forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.^(M)
¹³And lead us not into temptation,^[a]^(N)
but deliver us from the evil one.^[b]’^(O)

¹⁴For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.^(P) ¹⁵But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.^(Q)

Fasting

¹⁶“When you fast,^(R) do not look somber^(S) as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show others they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. ¹⁷But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, ¹⁸so that it will not be obvious to others that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.^(T)

Treasures in Heaven^(U)

¹⁹“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth,^(V) where moths and vermin destroy,^(W) and where thieves break in and steal. ²⁰But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven,^(X) where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.^(Y) ²¹For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.^(Z)

²²“The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are healthy,^[c] your whole body will be full of light. ²³But if your eyes are unhealthy,^[d] your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness!

²⁴“No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.^(AA)

Today is the 6^th day of January. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I am Brian and it is a pleasure and it is a joy to be here with you as we do this for the first time, we reach out our hand, we grab the knob, we turn it, we push forward, and we walk through the threshold of a brand-new shiny, sparkly, new week and I will remind us of this probably more weeks than not because it is a line of demarcation, like it is a new week, which gives us the opportunity to release the previous week because it has become a part of our history and we can look forward to the new week because it has not yet been lived and it is shiny and sparkly and new. And we stand here at the threshold of this new week and we get to decide how were going to live into what comes next. And when we systematically remind ourselves that His mercies are new every morning, and that we remind ourselves of these new weeks then we get a chance to reflect not only on the past week and how we managed it, but what we’re going to do to properly align ourselves with the Scriptures and with the Holy Spirit’s guidance in our lives in the new week. We have a much better chance of succeeding if we pre-decide how we are going to do this, right? A plan is always a better thing than winging it. And, so, we make the plan to step into this new shiny, sparkly, new week and walk with God in every moment and in every conceivable way and watch what that does to this week. And one of the ways we do that is to immerse ourselves in the daily rhythm of the Scripture. So, I guess the lesson as we’re moving into this new year for a Daily Audio Bible right now is that we should pay attention to the brand-new weeks that come our way as opportunities for reset and restarting and one of the things we do as each beginning of each new week, we switch translations and read from another translation, which then gives us a comprehensive view over the course of a year of all that biblical scholarship and translation has to offer us. So, we pick up where we left off, but we just switch translations each week and allow those translations and those translation teams to allow God’s word speak to us. So, this week we’ll read from the New International Version and we’ll pick up where we left off yesterday. Genesis chapter 13 verse 5 through 15 verse 21 today.

Commentary:

Okay. So, in the book of Genesis, just to kind of keep us attached to the story that’s being told, this man named Abram is going to become a very, very, very important figure and it’s probably not too much of a spoiler alert that he will have a name change. And, once he does a bunch of stuff will click into place. This man who has followed this God that he did not know into a land that he had never been influences the world until today and deeply affects three of the world’s religions, two of the greatest number and that would be Christianity, Islam and Judaism and they all trace their roots back to this guy. And, so, we’ll watch this unfold as the story goes forward but even as we consider Abram going after his nephew Lot who had been taken captive and that he chased him all the way as far as the city of Dan and beyond, these geographical landmarks that we just kind of go by them, there just places in our imagination, they’re not. No, they’re actual places. And, so, the ancient Canaanite city gates of the city of Dan, which had other names before Dan, but these ancient city gates that probably Abram would’ve had to pass through, they’re still standing, some of the oldest gates in the world. And in February, late February, we’ll be going on an adventure to the land of the Bible. Of course, that’s all full. It’s been full for over a year, but we go into the land of the Bible and we do this virtually every year. And, so, like, even the gates that I just told you about, as we travel through the land of the Bible visiting these geographical locations where the Bible happened, yeah, we’ll be posting that all up, so you’ll be able to see all of this and the trip becomes virtual. So, so many of the places that we’ll visit in the Bible are actual places and you’ll be able to see what they look like. If you want to kind of jumpstart on that there is a resource in the Daily Audio Bible shop, it’s called Promised Land, the Essential Pilgrim’s edition and it is a double DV set that also comes with an instant digital download and there’s over four hours a content. I’ve been shooting in the land of the Bible for…gosh…I think six years in a row to amass one of the greatest collections of the landscape of the Bible that exists. And, so, a lot of this is incorporated into the promised land films and what they are is just like two to three-minute short films and each of them is a location and they’re kind of organized by where they are: North, South, East or West in the land of the Bible. And, so you can see these things for yourself as we move through the Bible, you’ll be able to zoom in, watch a quick short film, if that’s what you want to do, and immerse yourself even deeper in the geography of the Bible so that you sort of have a lay of the land as we’re reading these the stories. My whole life I was raised around the Scriptures, I was raised as a pastor son, so these stories, you know, the more famous stories in the Bible were stories I grew up knowing and I always just imagined them and then even as an adult when I kind of returned to the Bible and it became part of my life I still just kind of imagined them. And then finally after many years of being invited I went and I this is like alonmst a decade ago now, but, you know, I didn't….I just thought it was gonna be kind of gimmicky and I just didn’t want to go. I thought that it would maybe even mess with my faith in a bad way. I don’t know…I just imagined, you know, a place where Jesus did something important in the Scriptures across the street from a McDonald’s or something. I just didn’t want to see that. That’s not how it is though. And, so, you can see. You can see the land of the Bible with the Promised Land films. That’s over four hours of content and will definitely set you up as we move through the Bible. So, you can check that out, but we will be going to the land of the Bible virtually next month, late next month. So, we’ve got some time and that’s always a fun community experience.

Prayer:

Father, we thank You for Your word, we thank You for the story that is beginning to blossom and unfold before us as we begin to know some of these main characters that are our spiritual ancestors and begin to know their story and begin to understand that their story connects to our story and even as Jesus, we are listening to Your words that we now call the sermon on the Mount. I’m pretty sure that’s not what You wrote at the top of Your notes when You decided to give this message, but this is what we call it and we’re listening to it and it’s a deeply challenging thing. We’re right here at the beginning of the year. You begin to press in on us with the truth, You begin to come…we always are inviting You near not understanding that that’s not just a sense of comfort, like draw near to me Lord so that I can feel better about whatever’s going on in my life and I can feel comforted and I can feel like You’re gonna be here to beat up the bad guys in my life. Sometimes when we pray that You will draw near You do draw near and it confronts us with things that cannot stand in Your presence that are in our lives and this is what we begin to find as we read that what You’re telling us in the sermon on the Mount. So, come Holy Spirit, plant the word of God in our lives, interpret it for us into our own contexts and stories as we walk with You and humble ourselves and surrender our agendas, we invite You through Your word to speak on Your own behalf. Come Holy Spirit we pray. In Jesus’ name we ask. Amen.

This is Michelle from Gettysburg. I am listening to Brian’s reading from the 31^st and just praying in Thanksgiving and I think to myself, how many days this year did I just think that something wouldn’t go or God wouldn’t pull through or how is it going to turn out and here we are on the 365^th day of our reading and God is faithful. God is just always faithful. So, maybe you didn’t go the way we thought or maybe things didn’t work the way we wanted them to, but God had a plan. And, good or bad in our minds or our ideas, God was good, He was good all the time. And that is a praise. Even if my mom’s health isn’t exactly what I want it to be or there was a loss this year and all the prayer requests that came over, they weren’t always happy ones and there were many losses but we forged forward and we just took the next step and we just showed up, and we showed up for the readings and we showed up for God’s word and we came because we knew He was faithful. Somehow all of our stories line us back up showing thanksgiving, showing praise, and showing up. So, by the time this gets played it’ll probably be day three of the new year and we just started and took the next step, right? I thank you Daily Audio Bible people showing up, for knowing God is faithful, for knowing that in another 367 days we will be back here praising and thanking Him again as we should each day. Dear Holy Spirit thank you for being with me, thank you for being with us and giving us this precious community of believers. Good afternoon Daily Audio Bible community. This is Diane Olive Brown from Newburgh Indiana calling on December 31^st at 4:12 PM and I have something I found that I think will really encourage your faith. It’s called Authority and it’s an anonymous…I don’t know who did this but it’s really great. When mountains will confront the way like it and leap, arise and say be thou removed and they shall be by the power of God capped in the Sea. All the power on earth, all the power in heaven to Christ, the son of God is given and from the throne He will endue and hindrances will flee from you for all the power of being that man faith through the Lord I surely can. Faith from his power on earth to tread on serpants __ on dragon’s heaf. Where though are oh mountain high, where there though art in earth and sky, when there though art truth is the same be thou removed in Jesus’ name. Be though removed faith will restart for yonder sea arise depart. I may, I can, I must, I will, the purpose of my God fulfilled. Isn’t that wonderful? We have a purpose and we shall fulfill it. Good morning Daily Audio Bible family it’s January 1^st. Happy new year. Let’s pray. God please give us the confidence to trust You to charge how things are to how You want them to be in our lives. Only You God can do that, and nothing is impossible with You God. We ask for the commitment that we need to take action. Lord, we pray that we may count our days with wisdom and realize how every day counts in the light of eternity in the saddles of our hearts. Watch over our hearts Father God. Let us ask ourselves in every situation what will this do to my heart. Help us measure our days and let us always ask ourselves, what is this going to do for my life and what is this going to do for my heart in my daily decisions. The Daily Audio Bible Reading for Sunday January 6, 2019 (NIV)

Genesis 13:5-15:21

⁵Now Lot,^(A) who was moving about with Abram, also had flocks and herds and tents. ⁶But the land could not support them while they stayed together, for their possessions were so great that they were not able to stay together.^(B) ⁷And quarreling^(C) arose between Abram’s herders and Lot’s. The Canaanites^(D) and Perizzites^(E) were also living in the land^(F) at that time.

⁸So Abram said to Lot,^(G) “Let’s not have any quarreling between you and me,^(H) or between your herders and mine, for we are close relatives.^(I) ⁹Is not the whole land before you? Let’s part company. If you go to the left, I’ll go to the right; if you go to the right, I’ll go to the left.”^(J)

¹⁰Lot looked around and saw that the whole plain^(K) of the Jordan toward Zoar^(L) was well watered, like the garden of the Lord,^(M) like the land of Egypt.^(N) (This was before the Lord destroyed Sodom^(O) and Gomorrah.)^(P) ¹¹So Lot chose for himself the whole plain of the Jordan and set out toward the east. The two men parted company: ¹²Abram lived in the land of Canaan,^(Q) while Lot^(R) lived among the cities of the plain^(S) and pitched his tents near Sodom.^(T) ¹³Now the people of Sodom^(U) were wicked and were sinning greatly against the Lord.^(V)

¹⁴The Lord said to Abram after Lot had parted from him, “Look around from where you are, to the north and south, to the east and west.^(W) ¹⁵All the land that you see I will give to you and your offspring^[a] forever.^(X) ¹⁶I will make your offspring like the dust of the earth, so that if anyone could count the dust, then your offspring could be counted.^(Y) ¹⁷Go, walk through the length and breadth of the land,^(Z) for I am giving it to you.”^(AA)

¹⁸So Abram went to live near the great trees of Mamre^(AB) at Hebron,^(AC) where he pitched his tents. There he built an altar to the Lord.^(AD)

Abram Rescues Lot

14 At the time when Amraphel was king of Shinar,^[b]^(AE) Arioch king of Ellasar, Kedorlaomer^(AF) king of Elam^(AG) and Tidal king of Goyim, ²these kings went to war against Bera king of Sodom, Birsha king of Gomorrah, Shinab king of Admah, Shemeber king of Zeboyim,^(AH) and the king of Bela (that is, Zoar).^(AI) ³All these latter kings joined forces in the Valley of Siddim^(AJ) (that is, the Dead Sea Valley^(AK)). ⁴For twelve years they had been subject to Kedorlaomer,^(AL) but in the thirteenth year they rebelled.

⁵In the fourteenth year, Kedorlaomer^(AM) and the kings allied with him went out and defeated the Rephaites^(AN) in Ashteroth Karnaim, the Zuzites in Ham, the Emites^(AO) in Shaveh Kiriathaim ⁶and the Horites^(AP) in the hill country of Seir,^(AQ) as far as El Paran^(AR) near the desert. ⁷Then they turned back and went to En Mishpat (that is, Kadesh),^(AS) and they conquered the whole territory of the Amalekites,^(AT) as well as the Amorites^(AU) who were living in Hazezon Tamar.^(AV)

⁸Then the king of Sodom, the king of Gomorrah,^(AW) the king of Admah, the king of Zeboyim^(AX) and the king of Bela (that is, Zoar)^(AY) marched out and drew up their battle lines in the Valley of Siddim^(AZ) ⁹against Kedorlaomer^(BA) king of Elam,^(BB) Tidal king of Goyim, Amraphel king of Shinar and Arioch king of Ellasar—four kings against five. ¹⁰Now the Valley of Siddim^(BC) was full of tar^(BD) pits, and when the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah^(BE) fled, some of the men fell into them and the rest fled to the hills.^(BF) ¹¹The four kings seized all the goods^(BG) of Sodom and Gomorrah and all their food; then they went away. ¹²They also carried off Abram’s nephew Lot^(BH) and his possessions, since he was living in Sodom.

¹³A man who had escaped came and reported this to Abram the Hebrew.^(BI) Now Abram was living near the great trees of Mamre^(BJ) the Amorite, a brother^[c] of Eshkol^(BK) and Aner, all of whom were allied with Abram. ¹⁴When Abram heard that his relative^(BL) had been taken captive, he called out the 318 trained^(BM) men born in his household^(BN) and went in pursuit as far as Dan.^(BO) ¹⁵During the night Abram divided his men^(BP) to attack them and he routed them, pursuing them as far as Hobah, north of Damascus.^(BQ) ¹⁶He recovered^(BR) all the goods^(BS) and brought back his relative Lot and his possessions, together with the women and the other people.

¹⁷After Abram returned from defeating Kedorlaomer^(BT) and the kings allied with him, the king of Sodom^(BU) came out to meet him in the Valley of Shaveh (that is, the King’s Valley).^(BV)

¹⁸Then Melchizedek^(BW) king of Salem^(BX) brought out bread^(BY) and wine.^(BZ) He was priest of God Most High,^(CA) ¹⁹and he blessed Abram,^(CB) saying,

“Blessed be Abram by God Most High,^(CC)
Creator of heaven and earth.^(CD)
²⁰And praise be to God Most High,^(CE)
who delivered your enemies into your hand.”

Then Abram gave him a tenth of everything.^(CF)

²¹The king of Sodom^(CG) said to Abram, “Give me the people and keep the goods^(CH) for yourself.”

²²But Abram said to the king of Sodom,^(CI) “With raised hand^(CJ) I have sworn an oath to the Lord, God Most High,^(CK) Creator of heaven and earth,^(CL) ²³that I will accept nothing belonging to you,^(CM) not even a thread or the strap of a sandal, so that you will never be able to say, ‘I made Abram rich.’ ²⁴I will accept nothing but what my men have eaten and the share that belongs to the men who went with me—to Aner, Eshkol and Mamre.^(CN) Let them have their share.”

The Lord’s Covenant With Abram

15 After this, the word of the Lord came to Abram^(CO) in a vision:^(CP)

“Do not be afraid,^(CQ) Abram.
I am your shield,^[d]^(CR)
your very great reward.^[e]^(CS)”

²But Abram said, “Sovereign Lord,^(CT) what can you give me since I remain childless^(CU) and the one who will inherit^[f] my estate is Eliezer of Damascus?^(CV)” ³And Abram said, “You have given me no children; so a servant^(CW) in my household^(CX) will be my heir.”

⁴Then the word of the Lord came to him: “This man will not be your heir, but a son who is your own flesh and blood will be your heir.^(CY)” ⁵He took him outside and said, “Look up at the sky and count the stars^(CZ)—if indeed you can count them.” Then he said to him, “So shall your offspring^[g] be.”^(DA)

⁶Abram believed the Lord, and he credited it to him as righteousness.^(DB)

⁷He also said to him, “I am the Lord, who brought you out^(DC) of Ur of the Chaldeans^(DD) to give you this land to take possession of it.”^(DE)

⁸But Abram said, “Sovereign Lord,^(DF) how can I know^(DG) that I will gain possession of it?”^(DH)

Adultery

Eye for Eye

Genesis 11:1-13:4, Matthew 5:1-26, Psalms 5:1-12, Proverbs 1:24-28

Today is the 5^th day of January. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I am Brian. It is a pleasure and an honor to be here with you today as we reach the conclusion of our first week together in this brand-new shiny, sparkly, new year and, I mean, it’s not our first full week, right? We just…we started this new year in this week, but this is our first weekend and tomorrow we’ll start our first full week of the year, but it’s good to be here with you as we take the next step forward and continue to move away from shore and into the deep as we move through the Bible this year. So, we’ve been reading from the Christian Standard Bible this week and that’s what we’ll do today. Genesis chapter 11 verse 1 through 13 verse 4.

Commentary:

Okay. So, of course, in the book of Proverbs, the voice that is saying these things right, “since I called out and you refused, since I extend my hand no one paid attention”, this is the voice of wisdom speaking. And, so, what wisdom is telling us today is that the choice is ours. We can pay attention to wisdom and allow wisdom to guide us and we will avoid the pitfalls that the lack of wisdom would present. However, if we’re not gonna pay any attention, well then wisdom will end up laughing at us. In other words, wisdom is attainable and the lack of wisdom in our decision-making is avoidable, which brings us to the word for the year.

Every year, all of these years, there’s been a word that’s kind of been our north star, something we can focus in on really and really pay attention to and that usually gets announced at the end of the year. And, so, in the community ending the year last year we mentioned what the word for this year is and the word for this year is “Maintain” and we will look at what it looks like in the stories that we will encounter in the Bible for people to maintain, we’ll look at that as we go along, but we also need to remember this word and put it in our own lives and just kind of see what it does. Like, if it means nothing to you all year long, that’s not problem, but I might mean everything to you, it might be the word that you actually need because maintaining requires awareness and vigilance. Like, you have to maintain things for them to work properly, right? If we don’t maintain our health it will go away. If we don’t maintain our vehicle it will break down. If we don’t maintain our spiritual lives, then we will be weak and everything will fall apart and we’ll find ourselves once again shaking our fist at God in the sky for letting something bad happen to us that was completely avoidable had we paid attention to the voice of wisdom. The voice of wisdom in the Scriptures today basically says you can listen to me or you can mock me but if you do then when calamity strikes you’ll feel as if wisdom is mocking you back because you didn’t pay any attention and you avoided wisdom so that you could reap the harvest of calamity that you are experiencing. Wisdom is something that we must maintain in our lives and if we will it will lead us to a narrow path and if we will walk that narrow path it will lead to life and isn’t that what were here for?

Prayer:

Father we thank You for allowing Your word to speak to us in these first few days of the year so profoundly on so many levels and we haven’t even sailed out of the harbor, we’re not even out in the deep yet and Your word is speaking to us and we’re thankful for it. Show us how to maintain wisdom God. And one of the ways that are practical is that we continue to put wisdom in our lives each and every day. So, come Holy Spirit, as we submit ourselves to You, Your will, Your ways. We ask this in the name of Jesus. Amen.

dailyaudiobible.com is the website, its home base, its where you find out what’s going on around here and we’re talking about what’s going on around here and we talk about it every day but as we move into the new year, you know, we kind of try to highlight little things that are good to know as we take the journey.

This being the first weekend, you’ll find that when you wake up tomorrow there will be an additional program and it will be called DAB community prayer. And, so, you know, you’ve been a few days into the year now. And, so, you know that at the end of each program there are other voices, brothers and sisters from all over the world rejoicing and also asking for help and prayer and that’s part of the community experience. We come together each and every day, allow God’s word wash over us, understand that were not alone, you can never listen to the daily audio Bible alone, that’s the irony. If you’re listening to it right now, then so is someone else. You’re never alone. Like, it doesn’t matter what time of day or night, like, this is an ongoing thing, there are tens and tens and tens and tens of thousands of us that are taking this journey. You are never alone when you’re listening to the Daily Audio Bible, someone else is listening to it too. And, so, we’re a community, where a family, we’re taking this journey together and one of things that if you’re knew that you’ll realize over time is that none of us are here to hurt anybody else, we’re here to let God’s word speak to us and to do that in community because it helps to know that our struggles are not individual and we’re not really alone. It helps to know that, but we come together, and we accept each other, and we understand that we are each a work in progress. And, so, whatever the story is that’s brought us to this point, no matter how much we’ve avoided the voice of wisdom and caused calamity. Hey, every day His mercies are new, and every day is a chance to start again. And, so, we accept each other like that, as works in progress. And, so, we pray for each other, we love each other, we rejoice with each other, we cry with each other, but there’s no way to play every single call that ever comes into the Daily Audio Bible. We tried this at one point but it got to the point that, you know, we’re investing a couple of hours a day and it’s mostly not about the Bible anymore. So, at the end of each week we come together so that every voice can be heard so that we can all pray and spend some time just hearing from each other and you’ll notice that showing up tomorrow if you knew. Of course if you’ve been here for a while you already know the drill, you already know the ropes, but at the beginning of the year these reminders, these refreshers, they help us…well…they set us up to succeed as we move through the year together. So, watch out for that. That’s coming.

Hi, this is for Sharon the Victorious and I just heard your pain and I’m reaching out to you from the other side because my son passed away a year ago and my husband died __ and I just want to tell you to hold on, hold onto Jesus, hold on because it doesn’t get better but God gives the comfort to those who…you know…He just comforts us. And when it gets really bad if you just keep on believing, keep on praying. I just…I’m lifting you up today and I’m just knowing that God’s wrapping His loving arms around you and He has just got his hand on you and He will never leave you nor forsake you and every weapon formed against you is not gonna prosper. And I just pray, I have no idea how you lost your daughter, but I lost my son to suicide and the grief I know feels overwhelming, but I know that God carried me. He just picked me up and I know that grain of the sand __. That was my God. He picked me up and He walked me through because I couldn’t, but he could. And when we lean on Him with everything that’s in you He sees you through and, you know, I’m gonna just tell you like everything’s great and everything’s fantastic because I still have days where I don’t feel like getting out of bed, but you know, what God is __, and I know that He loves me and every single day that’s what I tell myself. And that one day I will see my husband, I will see my son again, but until then I have to live because that’s what we do. We just get up and do the best we can and that’s what I keep telling myself. And there are days when I don’t want to, __ you will because God says you will. Because He says you can you all things through Christ who strengthens you and that’s the truth we can and I love you and I’m praying for you.

Good morning my family, sorry I’m have a cold, but I needed to get this message out to my sister Sharon, to our sister Sharon who is victorious. God gave you the power to call your DAB family Sharon, God put you in this family for a reason. You are loved, and the Holy Spirit nudged my imagination this morning, He gave me a picture of all of us sitting around the global Daily Audio Bible campfire with our arms entwined and singing, “it only takes a spark”. I’m not going to attempt to sing it to you because I can barely talk but it only takes a spark of God’s love to rescue Sharon, it only takes a spark of the love of Jesus to pull you up and out of the pit that you’re in right now. It only takes a spark __ to restore you and to use you more than you can ever ask or imagine. You are not alone. Be Victorious Sharon. I can’t wait to see how God uses you and your story in this new year coming. Hey Daily Audio Bible family, I wanted to share with you a conversation I had with my second-grader and my first-grader in the car. They both were driving with me and they asked, “can we listen to Brian?” And at first, I had no idea what they were talking about. I said, “Brian who?” And they said, “you know, Brian who reads the Bible.” I want to thank you, Brian, for what you do. For making my six-year-old and my seven-year-old want to listen to the Bible. It’s a wonderful thing. I want to ask prayers for my two sons who have some disabilities and are trying to overcome some delays in speech and delays in eating and a beast to be called autism. Genesis 11:1-13:4

The Tower of Babylon

11 The whole earth had the same language and vocabulary.^[a] ²As people^[b] migrated from the east,^[c] they found a valley in the land of Shinar and settled there.^(A) ³They said to each other, “Come, let us make oven-fired bricks.” (They used brick for stone and asphalt^(B) for mortar.) ⁴And they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city and a tower with its top in the sky.^(C) Let us make a name for ourselves; otherwise, we will be scattered throughout the earth.”

⁵Then the Lord came down^(D) to look over the city and the tower that the humans^[d] were building. ⁶The Lord said, “If they have begun to do this as one people all having the same language, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them. ⁷Come, let’s go down there and confuse their language so that they will not understand one another’s speech.” ⁸So from there the Lord scattered them throughout the earth,^(E) and they stopped building the city. ⁹Therefore it is called Babylon,^[e]^[f]^(F) for there the Lord confused the language of the whole earth, and from there the Lord scattered them throughout the earth.

From Shem to Abram

¹⁰These are the family records^(G) of Shem. Shem lived 100 years and fathered Arpachshad two years after the flood. ¹¹After he fathered Arpachshad, Shem lived 500 years and fathered other sons and daughters. ¹²Arpachshad lived 35 years^[g] and fathered Shelah. ¹³After he fathered Shelah, Arpachshad lived 403 years and fathered other sons and daughters. ¹⁴Shelah lived 30 years and fathered Eber. ¹⁵After he fathered Eber, Shelah lived 403 years and fathered other sons and daughters. ¹⁶Eber lived 34 years and fathered Peleg. ¹⁷After he fathered Peleg, Eber lived 430 years and fathered other sons and daughters. ¹⁸Peleg lived 30 years and fathered Reu. ¹⁹After he fathered Reu, Peleg lived 209 years and fathered other sons and daughters. ²⁰Reu lived 32 years and fathered Serug. ²¹After he fathered Serug, Reu lived 207 years and fathered other sons and daughters. ²²Serug lived 30 years and fathered Nahor. ²³After he fathered Nahor, Serug lived 200 years and fathered other sons and daughters. ²⁴Nahor lived 29 years and fathered Terah.^(H) ²⁵After he fathered Terah, Nahor lived 119 years and fathered other sons and daughters. ²⁶Terah lived 70 years and fathered Abram, Nahor, and Haran.

²⁷These are the family records of Terah. Terah fathered Abram, Nahor, and Haran, and Haran fathered Lot. ²⁸Haran died in his native land, in Ur of the Chaldeans, during his father Terah’s lifetime. ²⁹Abram and Nahor took wives: Abram’s wife was named Sarai,^(I) and Nahor’s wife was named Milcah.^(J) She was the daughter of Haran, the father of both Milcah and Iscah. ³⁰Sarai was unable to conceive;^(K) she did not have a child.

³¹Terah took his son Abram, his grandson Lot (Haran’s son), and his daughter-in-law Sarai, his son Abram’s wife, and they set out together from Ur of the Chaldeans^(L) to go to the land of Canaan. But when they came to Haran, they settled there. ³²Terah lived 205 years and died in Haran.

The Call of Abram

12 The Lord said to Abram:

Go out from your land,
your relatives,
and your father’s house
to the land that I will show you.^(M)
²I will make you into a great nation,^(N)
I will bless you,^(O)
I will make your name great,
and you will be a blessing.^(P)
³I will bless those who bless you,
I will curse anyone who treats you with contempt,^(Q)
and all the peoples^[h] on earth
will be blessed^[i] through you.^[j]^(R)

⁴So Abram went, as the Lord had told him, and Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he left Haran.^(S) ⁵He took his wife Sarai, his nephew Lot, all the possessions they had accumulated, and the people they had acquired in Haran, and they set out for the land of Canaan. When they came to the land of Canaan, ⁶Abram passed through the land to the site of Shechem,^(T) at the oak of Moreh. (At that time the Canaanites were in the land.) ⁷The Lord appeared to Abram and said, “To your offspring^(U) I will give this land.” So he built an altar there to the Lord who had appeared to him. ⁸From there he moved on to the hill country east of Bethel and pitched his tent, with Bethel on the west and Ai on the east. He built an altar to the Lord there, and he called on the name of the Lord.^(V) ⁹Then Abram journeyed by stages to the Negev.

Abram in Egypt

¹⁰There was a famine in the land,^(W) so Abram went down to Egypt to stay there for a while because the famine in the land was severe. ¹¹When he was about to enter Egypt, he said to his wife Sarai, “Look, I know what a beautiful woman you are. ¹²When the Egyptians see you, they will say, ‘This is his wife.’ They will kill me but let you live.^(X) ¹³Please say you’re my sister so it will go well for me because of you, and my life will be spared on your account.” ¹⁴When Abram entered Egypt, the Egyptians saw that the woman was very beautiful. ¹⁵Pharaoh’s officials saw her and praised her to Pharaoh, so the woman was taken to Pharaoh’s household. ¹⁶He treated Abram well because of her, and Abram acquired flocks and herds, male and female donkeys, male and female slaves, and camels.

¹⁷But the Lord struck Pharaoh and his household with severe plagues because of Abram’s wife Sarai.^(Y) ¹⁸So Pharaoh sent for Abram and said, “What have you done to me? Why didn’t you tell me she was your wife? ¹⁹Why did you say, ‘She’s my sister,’ so that I took her as my wife? Now, here is your wife. Take her and go!” ²⁰Then Pharaoh gave his men orders about him, and they sent him away with his wife and all he had.

Abram and Lot Separate

13 Abram went up from Egypt to the Negev^(Z)—he, his wife, and all he had, and Lot with him. ²Abram was very rich in livestock, silver, and gold. ³He went by stages from the Negev to Bethel, to the place between Bethel and Ai where his tent had formerly been, ⁴to the site where he had built the altar. And Abram called on the name of the Lord there.^(AA)

Matthew 5:1-26

The Sermon on the Mount

The Beatitudes

Believers Are Salt and Light

¹³“You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt should lose its taste, how can it be made salty?^[b] It’s no longer good for anything but to be thrown out and trampled under people’s feet.^(N)

¹⁴“You are the light of the world. A city situated on a hill cannot be hidden.^(O) ¹⁵No one lights a lamp^(P) and puts it under a basket, but rather on a lampstand, and it gives light for all who are in the house.^(Q) ¹⁶In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.^(R)

Christ Fulfills the Law

¹⁷“Don’t think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to abolish but to fulfill.^(S) ¹⁸For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter^[c] or one stroke of a letter will pass away from the law until all things are accomplished. ¹⁹Therefore, whoever breaks one of the least of these commands and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven. But whoever does and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.^(T) ²⁰For I tell you, unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never get into the kingdom of heaven.

Murder Begins in the Heart

²¹“You have heard that it was said to our ancestors, Do not murder,^[d]^(U) and whoever murders will be subject to judgment.^(V) ²²But I tell you, everyone who is angry with his brother or sister^[e] will be subject to judgment. Whoever insults^[f] his brother or sister, will be subject to the court.^[g] Whoever says, ‘You fool!’ will be subject to hellfire.^[h]^(W) ²³So if you are offering your gift on the altar, and there you remember that your brother or sister has something against you, ²⁴leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled with your brother or sister, and then come and offer your gift. ²⁵Reach a settlement quickly with your adversary while you’re on the way with him to the court, or your adversary will hand you over to the judge, and the judge to^[i] the officer, and you will be thrown into prison.^(X) ²⁶Truly I tell you, you will never get out of there until you have paid the last penny.^[j]

Today is the 4^th day of January. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I’m Brian. It is great to be here with you for our 4^th step of 365 steps that will take us all the way through the Bible. So, if we just keep doing what we’re doing and getting together like this every day we’ll go through the entire Bible this year as a community, which is what we’ve been doing successfully for the last 13 years. So, this is our 14^th time that we’ve come to January 4^th. So, let’s dive in, we’ve been, like I said at the beginning of the year, we’re kind of moving into this year and kind of getting comfortable and finding our way and our space and what’s going on here. And, so, we’ve been talking about the different books that we’ve begun. Like, we began the book of Genesis in the Old Testament, we began the book of Matthew in the New Testament. So, we’ve talked about those books. We talked about Psalms yesterday. And, so, when we get to the Proverbs reading we’ll talk about Proverbs and then we’ll be moved in, we’ll be moved in at least into the books that we’re reading until we reach a new book. So, from the Christian Standard Bible, which is what we’re reading this week, Genesis chapter 8 verse 1 through 10 verse 32.

Introduction to Proverbs:

Okay. So, we’ve come to the book of Proverbs and this is the last book we need to kind of move into and understand what we’re reading about until we come to a new book, like I said at the beginning. The Proverbs…we need to fall in love with the Proverbs because it is an invaluable book of ancient wisdom, but not because it ancient. It’s wisdom that has stood the test of time and it’s practical and it has been practical to the human experience for thousands of years. So, this is the wisdom of the ages. And, so, we should have a relationship with that, we should get to know it because it will instruct our lives as we move through this year without a doubt. So, in the structure of the Old Testament, which is where Proverbs is located, Proverbs is the main book in what is called the collection of wisdom literature. And the other books in the wisdom literature would be Ecclesiastes, Job and part of Psalms. And these portions of Scripture are called wisdom literature because they’re more intended to speak a direct lesson rather than be a narrative where the reader follows a story and then kind of gleans the meaning from the outcome of the story, which is how much of the Bible is. The wisdom literature speaks directly to what it’s trying to teach and most of the Proverbs are attributed to the great wise man and King, Solomon, although there are a couple of other voices involved that lend their wisdom to the Proverbs. And it seems that the Proverbs may have been collected all along but weren’t really put into a collection until the time of around Hezekiah who was also a king. And most scholars think that some of the Proverbs could even predate Solomon and they were a series of oral traditions or oral wisdom that have been handed down. And we each have oral wisdom in our lives, things our parents told us, things that our grandparents told us, but this would’ve been wisdom that was wide-spread and it had been handed down from generation to generation and then finding its place into a collection Proverbs. So, Proverbs obviously is in the Bible, so it obviously has religious connotations in everything that it says and the first part of the book is the wisdom of God speaking in first person directly to the reader in a feminine voice that is identified as the voice of wisdom, which is what we’re hearing. Now that we’re four days into this, this is war hearing now. And Proverbs addresses the human experience and it transfers direct wisdom to what we, as human beings, experience both in our interpersonal relationships with each other, in our relationship with God, in our relationship with ourselves, what’s going on inside of us and it gives us the ultimate roadmap to life. It is truly the ultimate book of wisdom and the greatest collection of wisdom that mankind has. Whatever you do, the book of Proverbs tells us, whatever you do get wisdom because wisdom is more valuable than anything else. If you have wisdom everything else can be achieved and the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. So, I mean even that little…like that’s two sentences right…there so much there that we can meditate on it all day long. That’s how potent the book of Proverbs is. And, so, with that said, Proverbs chapter 1 verses 20 through 23 today.

Prayer:

Father, we thank You for Your word. We thank You for another day in it. We thank You for…I mean…we’re covering some serious ground in these first few days as we just set sail and as we continue to move out into the deep, we can already feel You drawing us in. Some of us are intrigued. We’ve never really read the Bible before. We know some of the Bible stories but we’ve never read any of it in its context, we’ve never actually read the stories from the Bible, we’ve just heard them our whole lives. Some of us are becoming intrigued and even falling in love with other portions of the Bible that we’ve never really experienced before, maybe the book of Psalms, or maybe the potency of the book of Proverbs has just never really dawned on us, that we could turn to this one book with 31 chapters in it that will tell us everything we need to know about how to deal with just about every situation we will ever encounter in our human lives. And, so, we see that there’s a lot more to this story than maybe what we thought and this book that we thought was so difficult to understand and so unapproachable all these years even though we’ve believed that our eternity is based upon what is taught in this book, maybe it’s not so unapproachable after all. Maybe what we’re finding is a true friend, a friend that will speak the truth to us only and never lie to us. And, so, Holy Spirit, come, plant the words that we’ve read from Your word into our lives this day and every day as we move forward, that we submit ourselves to this discipline, we commit ourselves to taking this step day by day, every single day of this year. And we look forward to all that You will speak to us, all that You will reveal to us, and all that You will change within us because of this rhythm. Come Holy Spirit we pray in the name of Jesus we ask. Amen.

Some of the days…or some of the months…we don’t get to Proverbs 31, but the idea is a chapter a day and this takes two minutes…two minutes a day invested every day of this year and you will be pouring the unfiltered wisdom that has stood the test of time throughout all of recorded history and is thought to be one of the greatest pieces of literature of mankind and can you pour this into your life in a couple of minutes a day. And then when you actually need wisdom you will have wisdom because you’re in a relationship with wisdom and wisdom is speaking to you every day. Two minutes a day, like a pretty good deal since that’s all you have to invest is a couple of minutes of your day. So Daily Audio Bible Proverbs is a great companion when you’re listening to Daily Audio Bible at night or in the morning or on your way to work or at lunch or whatever you do…you know…that’s your rhythm, you set and establish that rhythm and then you find another place for two more minutes to pour wisdom into your life and watch what it does when you do. Of course, Daily Audio Bible Psalms, and Proverbs aren’t the only companions. There are many ways to go about this. My daughter China, whose been reading along, reading the Bible for the last 10 years, this is her 11th year. So, since she was 10 years old she’s been reading the Bible every day and she went through Daily Audio Bible kids and then she launched Daily Audio Bible teen and then she wasn’t a teen anymore and so she’s kind of grown into her calling, which is Daily Audio Bible Chronological, going through the Bible chronologically in a year. If Japanese is your native tongue, then you can go through the New Testament with the Japanese team or Arabic through the Bible in Arabic or through the Bible in French. So, they also have Provers in French or Psalms…sorry I don’t speak French…so sorry for you French folks. That’s why we have brothers and sisters who are passionate about their native language. Hi Daily Audio Bible, this is Rebecca from Michigan, I know I haven’t called in a long time, it’s December 29^th and December 24^th I had to put my dog down because her heartbeat was 40 and they’re supposed to be 120 and she had fluid building up in her lungs and fluid going in her tummy…stomach…and I think she’s was dying. Anyway, she was 12 going on 13 and I just cried my eyes out because that was my walking buddy, my friend. So, this year I just want God to bless me with new friends, A new friend that will make my heart strings fly, give me the closeness to the Lord. I want to find me a walking friend because that’s what my dog did for me, she was my walking buddy and know people, they’re not the same as a dog but I really don’t necessarily need another dog. I just want some new friends, I want a new friend even if it’s a boyfriend, a girlfriend, I don’t care, but I just want some friends that I can hang out with that are godly Christian people because I’m single and a lot of the churches, they kind of don’t pay attention to the singles. I’m usually sitting by myself in church. So, I just want some friends. Please, ask God to bless me with some godly Christian friends. That would be awesome even if I have to get a non-Christian friend to introduce them to DAB, that would be great.

Hello this is Sherry from Kansas, I did not hear the program Brian said that the word for the year was to “Maintain” or “Maintain” and when I heard that from a friend my heart sunk because I thought, oh know, that means were not going anywhere, we’re not going to move from where we are, but I looked at the definition of maintain from Merriam-Webster and it’s really strong. It’s a much more strong word and I thought it was. It means, number one to keep in an existing state, to preserve from failure or decline. Number two to sustain against opposition or danger, to uphold and defend. Number three, my favorite, to continue or persevere in, carry on, keep up. Four, to support or provide for, to sustain. And number five, to affirm in or, as if in an argument, to assert or to take a stand. And I realize that my position in Christ where I am, all of these apply to this. I need to make sure that I preserve from failure or decline. I have to sustain it against opposition or danger and I have to uphold and defend. I have to continue and persevere in, I have to carry on, I have to keep up, and I have to take a stand and assert what I believe in and what my righteousness in Christ and my position in Christ stands for. So, I just wanted to say, good word, the word “Maintain” and it is something that we need to meditate on and focus on the coming year. And thank you Brian for that word. Bye.

Hi, this is Paul in Kansas. I’m just listening to the 30 December broadcast and I heard Sharon Victorious, asking for prayer. Sharon is grieving and feeling alone, and she wonders if she can make it. Father, I lift up Sharon to You and I ask that You would comfort her and sustain her in her grieving. I pray that Your Holy Spirit would fill her and that Your love would fill her and drive out all of her feelings of hopelessness. I ask that Your love would fully invade her being and drive all the harmful things that she has been thinking. Genesis 8-10

The Flood Recedes

8 God remembered Noah,^(A) as well as all the wildlife and all the livestock that were with him in the ark. God caused a wind^[a] to pass over the earth,^(B) and the water began to subside. ²The sources of the watery depths and the floodgates of the sky were closed, and the rain from the sky stopped.^(C) ³The water steadily receded from the earth, and by the end of 150 days the water had decreased significantly.^(D) ⁴The ark came to rest in the seventh month, on the seventeenth day of the month, on the mountains of Ararat.^(E)

⁵The water continued to recede until the tenth month; in the tenth month, on the first day of the month, the tops of the mountains were visible. ⁶After forty days Noah opened the window of the ark that he had made, ⁷and he sent out a raven. It went back and forth until the water had dried up from the earth. ⁸Then he sent out a dove to see whether the water on the earth’s surface had gone down, ⁹but the dove found no resting place for its foot. It returned to him in the ark because water covered the surface of the whole earth. He reached out and brought it into the ark to himself. ¹⁰So Noah waited seven more days and sent out the dove from the ark again. ¹¹When the dove came to him at evening, there was a plucked olive leaf in its beak. So Noah knew that the water on the earth’s surface had gone down. ¹²After he had waited another seven days, he sent out the dove, but it did not return to him again. ¹³In the six hundred and first year,^[b] in the first month, on the first day of the month, the water that had covered the earth was dried up. Then Noah removed the ark’s cover and saw that the surface of the ground was drying. ¹⁴By the twenty-seventh day of the second month, the earth was dry.

The Lord’s Promise

¹⁵Then God spoke to Noah, ¹⁶“Come out of the ark, you, your wife, your sons, and your sons’ wives with you. ¹⁷Bring out all the living creatures^[c] that are with you—birds, livestock, those that crawl on the earth—and they will spread over the earth and be fruitful and multiply on the earth.”^(F) ¹⁸So Noah, along with his sons, his wife, and his sons’ wives, came out. ¹⁹All the animals, all the creatures that crawl, and all the flying creatures—everything that moves on the earth—came out of the ark by their families.

²⁰Then Noah built an altar to the Lord. He took some of every kind of clean animal and every kind of clean bird and offered burnt offerings on the altar. ²¹When the Lord smelled the pleasing aroma,^(G) he said to himself, “I will never again curse the ground^(H) because of human beings, even though the inclination of the human heart is evil from youth onward.^(I) And I will never again strike down every living thing as I have done.^(J)

²²As long as the earth endures,
seedtime and harvest, cold and heat,
summer and winter, and day and night
will not cease.”^(K)

God’s Covenant with Noah

9 God blessed Noah and his sons and said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth.^(L) ²The fear and terror of you will be in every living creature on the earth, every bird of the sky, every creature that crawls on the ground, and all the fish of the sea. They are placed under your authority.^[d] ³Every creature that lives and moves will be food for you;^(M) as I gave the green plants, I have given you everything.^(N) ⁴However, you must not eat meat with its lifeblood in it.^(O) ⁵And I will require a penalty for your lifeblood;^[e] I will require it from any animal^(P) and from any human; if someone murders a fellow human, I will require that person’s life.^[f]^(Q)

⁶Whoever sheds human blood,
by humans his blood will be shed,^(R)
for God made humans in his image.^(S)

⁷But you, be fruitful and multiply; spread out over the earth and multiply on it.”^(T)

⁸Then God said to Noah and his sons with him, ⁹“Understand that I am establishing my covenant^(U) with you and your descendants after you, ¹⁰and with every living creature that is with you—birds, livestock, and all wildlife of the earth that are with you—all the animals of the earth that came out of the ark. ¹¹I establish my covenant with you that never again will every creature be wiped out by floodwaters; there will never again be a flood to destroy the earth.”^(V)

¹²And God said, “This is the sign of the covenant^(W) I am making between me and you and every living creature with you, a covenant for all future generations: ¹³I have placed my bow in the clouds,^(X) and it will be a sign of the covenant between me and the earth. ¹⁴Whenever I form clouds over the earth and the bow appears in the clouds, ¹⁵I will remember my covenant^(Y) between me and you and all the living creatures:^[g] water will never again become a flood to destroy every creature. ¹⁶The bow will be in the clouds, and I will look at it and remember the permanent covenant^(Z) between God and all the living creatures^[h] on earth.” ¹⁷God said to Noah, “This is the sign of the covenant that I have established between me and every creature on earth.”

Prophecies about Noah’s Family

¹⁸Noah’s sons who came out of the ark were Shem, Ham, and Japheth. Ham was the father of Canaan. ¹⁹These three were Noah’s sons, and from them the whole earth was populated.^(AA)

²⁰Noah, as a man of the soil, began by planting^[i] a vineyard. ²¹He drank some of the wine, became drunk, and uncovered himself inside his tent. ²²Ham, the father of Canaan, saw his father naked and told his two brothers outside.^(AB) ²³Then Shem and Japheth took a cloak and placed it over both their shoulders, and walking backward, they covered their father’s nakedness. Their faces were turned away, and they did not see their father naked.

²⁴When Noah awoke from his drinking and learned what his youngest son had done to him, ²⁵he said:

Canaan is cursed.^(AC)
He will be the lowest of slaves to his brothers.^(AD)

²⁶He also said:

Blessed be the Lord, the God of Shem;
Let Canaan be^[j] Shem’s slave.
²⁷Let God extend Japheth;^[k]
let Japheth dwell in the tents of Shem;
let Canaan be Shem’s slave.

²⁸Now Noah lived 350 years after the flood. ²⁹So Noah’s life lasted 950 years; then he died.

The Table of Nations

10 These are the family records^(AE) of Noah’s sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth. They also had sons after the flood.

²Japheth’s sons:^(AF) Gomer, Magog, Madai, Javan, Tubal, Meshech, and Tiras. ³Gomer’s sons: Ashkenaz, Riphath, and Togarmah. ⁴And Javan’s sons: Elishah, Tarshish,^(AG) Kittim, and Dodanim.^[l] ⁵From these descendants, the peoples of the coasts and islands spread out into their lands according to their clans in their nations, each with its own language.

⁶Ham’s sons:^(AH) Cush, Mizraim, Put, and Canaan. ⁷Cush’s sons: Seba, Havilah, Sabtah, Raamah, and Sabteca. And Raamah’s sons: Sheba and Dedan.

⁸Cush fathered Nimrod, who began to be powerful in the land. ⁹He was a powerful hunter in the sight of the Lord. That is why it is said, “Like Nimrod, a powerful hunter in the sight of the Lord.” ¹⁰His kingdom started with Babylon,^(AI) Erech,^[m] Accad,^[n] and Calneh,^[o] in the land of Shinar.^[p]^(AJ) ¹¹From that land he went to Assyria^(AK) and built Nineveh, Rehoboth-ir, Calah, ¹²and Resen, between Nineveh and the great city Calah.

¹³Mizraim^[q]^(AL) fathered the people of Lud, Anam, Lehab, Naphtuh, ¹⁴Pathrus, Casluh (the Philistines came from them), and Caphtor.^(AM)

¹⁵Canaan fathered Sidon his firstborn and Heth, ¹⁶as well as the Jebusites, the Amorites, the Girgashites,^(AN) ¹⁷the Hivites, the Arkites, the Sinites, ¹⁸the Arvadites, the Zemarites, and the Hamathites. Afterward the Canaanite clans scattered. ¹⁹The Canaanite border went from Sidon going toward Gerar as far as Gaza, and going toward Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah, and Zeboiim as far as Lasha.

²⁰These are Ham’s sons by their clans, according to their languages, in their lands and their nations.

²¹And Shem, Japheth’s older brother, also had sons. Shem was the father of all the sons of Eber.^(AO) ²²Shem’s sons^(AP) were Elam, Asshur, Arpachshad, Lud, and Aram.

²³Aram’s sons: Uz, Hul, Gether, and Mash.

²⁴Arpachshad fathered^[r] Shelah,^(AQ) and Shelah fathered Eber. ²⁵Eber had two sons. One was named Peleg,^[s] for during his days the earth was divided;^(AR) his brother was named Joktan. ²⁶And Joktan fathered Almodad, Sheleph, Hazarmaveth, Jerah, ²⁷Hadoram, Uzal, Diklah, ²⁸Obal, Abimael, Sheba, ²⁹Ophir, Havilah, and Jobab. All these were Joktan’s sons. ³⁰Their settlements extended from Mesha to Sephar, the eastern hill country.

Matthew 4:12-25

Ministry in Galilee

¹²When he heard that John had been arrested,^(A) he withdrew into Galilee.^(B) ¹³He left Nazareth and went to live in Capernaum^(C) by the sea, in the region of Zebulun and Naphtali. ¹⁴This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah:

¹⁵Land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali,
along the road by the sea, beyond the Jordan,
Galilee of the Gentiles.
¹⁶The people who live in darkness
have seen a great light,
and for those living in the land of the shadow of death,
a light has dawned.^[a]^[b] ^(D)

¹⁷From then on Jesus began to preach, “Repent, because the kingdom of heaven^(E) has come near.”

The First Disciples

¹⁸As^(F) he was walking along the Sea of Galilee,^(G) he saw two brothers, Simon (who is called Peter), and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the sea—for they were fishermen. ¹⁹“Follow me,” he told them, “and I will make you fish for^[c] people.” ²⁰Immediately they left their nets and followed him.

²¹Going on from there, he saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee, and his brother John. They were in a boat with Zebedee their father, preparing their nets, and he called them. ²²Immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him.

Teaching, Preaching, and Healing

²³Now Jesus began to go all over Galilee,^(H) teaching in their synagogues, preaching the good news of the kingdom, and healing every^[d] disease and sickness^[e] among the people.^(I) ²⁴Then the news about him spread throughout Syria.^(J) So they brought to him all those who were afflicted, those suffering from various diseases and intense pains, the demon-possessed, the epileptics, and the paralytics.^(K) And he healed them. ²⁵Large crowds followed him from Galilee, the Decapolis, Jerusalem, Judea, and beyond the Jordan.^(L)

Genesis 5:1-7:24, Matthew 3:7-4:11, Psalms 3:1-8, Proverbs 1:10-19

Today is January 3^rd. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I am Brian and it is a pleasure and an honor to have these moments together with you as we take the next step forward in our adventure that will lead us through the entire Bible this year. Of course, this is day three so we’re still not quite out of harbor yet, but we certainly have set sail and in the two days that we‘ve spent together so far we’re already seeing how quickly and how deeply the Bible can speak. And, so here we are at day three taking the next step forward and just kind of moving into our new year. And, so, as we mentioned a couple of times, the way that the Daily Audio Bible works is that we’ll read a portion from the Old Testament and then a portion from the New Testament and then some Psalms and some Proverbs each day moving us a little bit forward as we move through the entire Bible. And, so, we talked about Genesis on January 1^st and then we kind of talked about the book of Matthew that we’re reading now, yesterday. And, so, when we to the Psalms today we’ll talk about Psalms and then tomorrow we’ll talk about Proverbs and then will kind of be moved into the books that we’re going through currently. So, let’s dive in and take the next step forward in Genesis. And we’re reading from the Christian Standard Bible this week. Genesis 5 verse 1 through 7 verse 24.

Introduction to the Book of Psalms:

Okay. So, this brings us to the third section of our daily reading, which is from the book of Psalms, and since we haven’t talked about Psalms yet this year let’s just kind of give ourselves a little context for what will be spending time in the whole year. We’ll be spending time of the Psalms every day for the whole year. So, kind of understanding what we’re reading’s helpful. So, the Hebrew word for Psalms would probably be translated best as praises. It’s a collection of 150 songs and hymns and congregational singing’s and liturgical prayers and individual songs and poems, poems of worship. It’s basically five books in one and they’re classified by who wrote them or their theme or their purpose. Some of them give praise to God, of course, and others speak of His character or His actions or His power, some are songs of lament or repentance and others are songs of thanksgiving. And we’ll notice as we move through the Psalms why they stood the test of time because they are brutally honest, whether in questioning or in full-blown worship because no matter the start circumstances the book of Psalms is meant to bring praise and glory and adoration and reverence and honor to God in every circumstance in all of the issues of life for every purpose. And, so, it’s an invaluable collection that gives language to what we feel in our hearts. Literally, the Psalms will touch every nuance, every emotion that we experience as we go forward in the year. And Psalms is a beautiful book. It contains some of the most heartfelt musical poetry that’s ever been written and like I just said, every human emotion is explored in the Psalms. David, who we haven’t met yet, but we will get to know David who is a shepherd boy that will become a king and we’ll understand that story in all of its detail, he was a master musician and he composed most of the Psalms and even though we have a large amount of like biographical information about David throughout the rest of the Bible, the Psalms are what reveal his heart. And what we find is that he’s utterly human and he brings his humanity to the table when he’s crying out to God and the back-and-forth or the ebb and flow of his humanity is always in his compositions. And, so, they speak to us so eloquently and so deeply because they’re so honest and they’re coming from the human heart so we can find ourselves in the Psalms. And then other writers of it in the Psalms include David’s son Solomon, the sons of Kora, Asaph, Ethan and then there are a number of Psalms whose author is unknown or they were anonymously written and collected. But ultimately the purpose of the Psalms was to bring the people together and to enrich their worship experience and to tell their story, their Hebrew story. And these songs would’ve been sung in public and they would’ve been sung in private as people went about their daily lives not unlike how we use of modern worship music. But the Psalms, they’re ancient, they’ve stood the test of time for thousands of years and we still sing and quote them now and their power and beauty is unmatched in literature, they’re absolutely unrivaled. And biblical scholars believe that the Psalms were written over a fairly long period of time between about 950 B.C. until about maybe 165 or 170 B.C. so, you know a period of about 800 years and three major periods in Israel are covered in the Psalms, and the first will be during the reign of David and Solomon and then the second would contain songs written when the children of Israel were taken into exile and we’ll get to know and understand that story pretty well and then the third section would contain writings from when the exiles were freed to come back to their to their homeland after the exile. So, it’s a long time span and a lot of different culture points that are represented but the Psalms are very cohesive in their purpose of bringing glory and honor to God in a very authentic and beautiful way. And, so, that’s what we’re reading when we’re reading the Psalms. And today we will read Psalm chapter 3, which is titled Confidence in Troubled times, a Psalm of David when he fled from his son, Absalom.

Commentary:

Okay. So, we covered a lot of territory in the book of Genesis as we went through the generations of the first people and their lifespans culminating in the fact that humanity after the fall of man in the Garden of Eden took its knowledge of good and evil and created an evil world, devoid of God, separated from God. And God looks down upon the earth and sees the wickedness of every creature. In fact, it defines pretty starkly, they basically became like animals and only participating in wickedness, which brings about the flood and introduces us to this person named Noah. And, of course, the Noah and the ark story is about as famous as it gets. So, we don’t need to retell that story other than that we should notice that God finds Noah to be righteous and wants to start over with Noah and enter into a covenant and this is the first time that we see this kind of language in the Bible, but certainly won’t be the last time. Covenant will be a thread that runs all the way through all of the Bible. And in terms of like dating Genesis, like some of the things that we can look at, like how do biblical scholars come to the conclusion that Moses had a hand at least in and collecting some of these stories? I mean, so what we read in the book of Genesis today is about clean and unclean animals. That theme or that idea, at least in the Bible, isn’t introduced or expanded or expounded upon until Moses shows up on the scene and we began to get the law, the Mosaic law, which we’ll get to soon enough So, that’s how Moses gets into the picture, that’s how some of this material becomes part of the books of Moses.

Then of course, in the book of Matthew we’re getting to know Jesus now. And, so, Jesus is baptized by John the Baptist and He is in the wilderness being tempted and we see exactly what it is that the evil one goes after in Jesus, which is His identity, right? If you are the son of God, then do this so that, right? And, so, we find, okay, the voice of the accuser in my life is after the same thing, the question of who I am and do I know who I am. And as I’ve mentioned a number of times, as we go through the Bible, not only will that question be answered from every conceivable angle but we’ll see that this is one of the main, main, main tactics set against us, deception. It was deception in the garden of Eden and it is deception in our own lives that is our greatest challenge.

Of course, we talked about the Psalms, kind of did a little flyover to understand the context.

And then, of course, we’ll talk about Proverbs tomorrow.

Prayer:

Father, we thank you for your word, we thank you for this, the third day and we move further and further from shore and won’t be long before we’re all out in the deep together taking this vast journey that transforms us from within and we thank you that your word can do this in our lives, it can become the best friend we’ve ever had because it will just tell us the truth and it won’t pander to us and it won’t be false, it will simply tell us the truth, and then, then it’s in our lap and we can choose to believe the truth or walk away from the truth, but we’ll have a clear understanding of where the paths are going to lead. And, so, we are grateful, we are humbled, we thank you for bringing us this far, we thank you for all that you have yet to speak to us in the coming months. So, come Holy Spirit we pray. In Jesus’ name we ask. Amen.

The Line of Seth

5 This is the document containing the family^[a] records^(A) of Adam.^[b] On the day that God created man,^[c] he made him in the likeness of God; ²he created them male and female. When they were created, he blessed them and called them mankind.^[d]

³Adam was 130 years old when he fathered a son in his likeness, according to his image, and named him Seth. ⁴Adam lived 800 years after he fathered Seth, and he fathered other sons and daughters. ⁵So Adam’s life lasted 930 years; then he died.

⁶Seth was 105 years old when he fathered Enosh. ⁷Seth lived 807 years after he fathered Enosh, and he fathered other sons and daughters. ⁸So Seth’s life lasted 912 years; then he died.

³²Noah was 500 years old, and he fathered Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

Sons of God and Daughters of Mankind

6 When mankind began to multiply on the earth and daughters were born to them, ²the sons of God^(E) saw that the daughters of mankind were beautiful, and they took any they chose as wives^[f] for themselves.^(F) ³And the Lord said, “My Spirit will not remain^[g] with^[h] mankind forever,^(G) because they are corrupt.^[i]^(H) Their days will be 120 years.” ⁴The Nephilim^[j] were on the earth both in those days and afterward, when the sons of God came to the daughters of mankind, who bore children to them. They were the powerful men of old, the famous men.

Judgment Decreed

⁵When the Lord saw that human wickedness was widespread on the earth and that every inclination of the human mind was nothing but evil all the time,^(I) ⁶the Lord regretted that he had made man on the earth,^(J) and he was deeply grieved.^[k] ⁷Then the Lord said, “I will wipe mankind, whom I created, off the face of the earth, together with the animals, creatures that crawl, and birds of the sky—for I regret that I made them.” ⁸Noah, however, found favor with the Lord.^(K)

God Warns Noah

⁹These are the family records^(L) of Noah. Noah was a righteous man,^(M) blameless among his contemporaries;^(N) Noah walked with God.^(O) ¹⁰And Noah fathered three sons: Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

¹¹Now the earth was corrupt in God’s sight, and the earth was filled with wickedness.^[l] ¹²God saw how corrupt the earth was, for every creature had corrupted its way on the earth.^(P) ¹³Then God said to Noah, “I have decided to put an end to every creature, for the earth is filled with wickedness because of them; therefore I am going to destroy them along with the earth.

¹⁴“Make yourself an ark of gopher^[m] wood. Make rooms in the ark, and cover it with pitch inside and outside. ¹⁵This is how you are to make it: The ark will be 450 feet long, 75 feet wide, and 45 feet high.^[n] ¹⁶You are to make a roof,^[o] finishing the sides of the ark to within eighteen inches^[p] of the roof. You are to put a door in the side of the ark. Make it with lower, middle, and upper decks.

¹⁷“Understand that I am bringing a flood—floodwaters on the earth^(Q) to destroy every creature under heaven with the breath of life in it. Everything on earth will perish. ¹⁸But I will establish my covenant with you,^(R) and you will enter the ark with your sons, your wife, and your sons’ wives. ¹⁹You are also to bring into the ark two of all the living creatures, male and female, to keep them alive with you. ²⁰Two of everything—from the birds according to their kinds, from the livestock according to their kinds, and from the animals that crawl on the ground according to their kinds—will come to you so that you can keep them alive. ²¹Take with you every kind of food that is eaten; gather it as food for you and for them.” ²²And Noah did this. He did everything that God had commanded him.^(S)

Entering the Ark

7 Then the Lord said to Noah, “Enter the ark, you and all your household, for I have seen that you alone are righteous before me in this generation.^(T) ²You are to take with you seven pairs, a male and its female, of all the clean animals,^(U) and two of the animals that are not clean, a male and its female, ³and seven pairs, male and female, of the birds of the sky—in order to keep offspring alive throughout the earth. ⁴Seven days from now I will make it rain on the earth forty days and forty nights, and every living thing I have made I will wipe off the face of the earth.” ⁵And Noah did everything that the Lord commanded him.^(V)

⁶Noah was six hundred years old when the flood came and water covered the earth. ⁷So Noah, his sons, his wife, and his sons’ wives entered the ark because of the floodwaters. ⁸From the clean animals, unclean animals, birds, and every creature that crawls on the ground, ⁹two of each, male and female, came to Noah and entered the ark, just as God had commanded him. ¹⁰Seven days later the floodwaters came on the earth.

The Flood

¹¹In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, on the seventeenth day of the month, on that day all the sources of the vast watery depths burst open,^(W) the floodgates of the sky were opened,^(X) ¹²and the rain fell on the earth forty days and forty nights. ¹³On that same day Noah and his three sons Shem, Ham, and Japheth, entered the ark, along with Noah’s wife and his three sons’ wives. ¹⁴They entered it with all the wildlife according to their kinds, all livestock according to their kinds, all the creatures that crawl on the earth according to their kinds, every flying creature—all the birds and every winged creature—according to their kinds. ¹⁵Two of every creature that has the breath of life in it came to Noah and entered the ark. ¹⁶Those that entered, male and female of every creature, entered just as God had commanded him. Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath?^(B) ⁸Therefore produce fruit^(C) consistent with^[a] repentance. ⁹And don’t presume to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’^(D) For I tell you that God is able to raise up children for Abraham from these stones. ¹⁰The ax is already at the root of the trees. The Baptism of Jesus

¹³Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan, to be baptized by him.^(I) ¹⁴But John tried to stop him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and yet you come to me?”

¹⁵Jesus answered him, “Allow it for now, because this is the way for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then John allowed him to be baptized.

¹⁶When Jesus was baptized, he went up immediately from the water. The heavens^(J) suddenly opened for him,^[d] and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming down on him.^(K) ¹⁷And a voice from heaven said: “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well-pleased.”^(L)

The Temptation of Jesus

4 Then^(M) Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.^(N) ²After he had fasted forty days and forty nights,^(O) he was hungry. ³Then the tempter approached him and said, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.”^(P)

⁴He answered, “It is written: Man must not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.”^[e]

⁵Then the devil took him to the holy city, had him stand on the pinnacle of the temple,^(Q) ⁶and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down. For it is written:

He will give his angels^(R) orders concerning you,
and they will support you with their hands
so that you will not strike
your foot against a stone.”^[f]^(S)

⁷Jesus told him, “It is also written: Do not test the Lord your God.”^[g]^(T)

⁸Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor. ⁹And he said to him, “I will give you all these things if you will fall down and worship me.”^[h]

¹⁰Then Jesus told him, “Go away,^[i] Satan! For it is written: Worship the Lord your God, and serve only him.”^[j]^(U)

¹¹Then the devil left him, and angels came and began to serve him.^(V)

¹¹If they say—“Come with us!
Let’s set an ambush^(C) and kill someone.^[a]
Let’s attack some innocent person^(D) just for fun!^[b]
¹²Let’s swallow them alive,^(E) like Sheol,
whole, like those who go down to the Pit.^(F)
¹³We’ll find all kinds of valuable property
