The Daily Audio Bible Reading for Friday November 23, 2018 (NIV)

Ezekiel 45:13-46:24

13-15 “This is the basis on which you are to make your offerings:

Wheat: 1/60th of your harvest
Barley: 1/60th of your harvest
Olive oil: 1/100th of the yield of your trees
(Measure it by the bath 10 baths = 1 homer = 1 kor)
Sheep: 1 sheep out of every 200 from the meadows of Israel

“You are to bring grain offerings, animals to be burned whole, and animals for fellowship offerings, so that your sins will be forgiven. I, the Sovereign Lord, command it.

16 “All the people of the land must take[a] these offerings to the ruling prince of Israel. 17 It will be his duty to provide the animals to be burned whole, the grain offerings, and the wine offerings for the whole nation of Israel at the New Moon Festivals, the Sabbaths, and the other festivals. He is to provide the sin offerings, the grain offerings, the offerings to be burned whole, and the fellowship offerings, to take away the sins of the people of Israel.”

The Festivals(A)

18 The Sovereign Lord said, “On the first day of the first month you are to sacrifice a bull without any defects and purify the Temple. 19 The priest will take some of the blood of this sin offering and put it on the doorposts of the Temple, on the four corners of the altar, and on the posts of the gateways to the inner courtyard. 20 On the seventh day of the month you are to do the same thing on behalf of anyone who sins unintentionally or through ignorance. In this way you will keep the Temple holy.

21 (B)“On the fourteenth day of the first month you will begin the celebration of the Passover Festival. For seven days everyone will eat bread made without yeast. 22 On the first day of the festival the ruling prince must offer a bull as a sacrifice for his sins and for those of all the people. 23 On each of the seven days of the festival he is to sacrifice to the Lord seven bulls and seven rams without any defects and burn them whole. He is also to sacrifice a male goat each day as a sin offering. 24 For each bull and each ram that is sacrificed, there is to be an offering of half a bushel of grain and three quarts of olive oil.

25 (C)“For the Festival of Shelters, which begins on the fifteenth day of the seventh month, the prince will offer on each of the seven days the same sacrifice for sin, the same offerings to be burned whole, and the same offerings of grain and olive oil.”

The Prince and the Festivals

46 The Sovereign Lord says, “The east gateway to the inner courtyard must be kept closed during the six working days, but it is to be opened on the Sabbath and at the New Moon Festival. The ruling prince will go from the outer courtyard into the entrance room of the gateway and stand beside the posts of the gate while the priests burn his sacrifices whole and offer his fellowship offerings. There at the gate he must worship and then go back out. The gate must not be shut until evening. Each Sabbath and each New Moon Festival all the people are also to bow down and worship the Lord in front of the gate. On the Sabbath the prince is to bring to the Lord, as sacrifices to be burned whole, six lambs and one ram, all without any defects. With each ram he is to bring an offering of half a bushel of grain, and with each lamb he is to bring whatever he wants to give. For each half-bushel of grain offering he is to bring three quarts of olive oil. At the New Moon Festival he will offer a young bull, six lambs, and a ram, all without any defects. With each bull and each ram the offering is to be half a bushel of grain, and with each lamb the offering is to be whatever the prince wants to give. Three quarts of olive oil are to be offered with each half-bushel of grain. The prince must leave the entrance room of the gateway and go out by the same way he went in.

“When the people come to worship the Lord at any festival, those who enter by the north gate are to leave by the south gate after they have worshiped, and those who enter by the south gate are to leave by the north gate. No one may go out by the same way he entered, but must leave by the opposite gate. 10 The prince is to come in when the people come, and leave when they leave. 11 On the feast days and at the festivals the grain offering will be half a bushel with each bull or ram, and whatever the worshiper wants to give with each lamb. Three quarts of olive oil are to be offered with each half-bushel of grain.

12 “When the ruling prince wants to make a voluntary offering to the Lord, either an offering to be burned whole or a fellowship offering, the east gate to the inner courtyard will be opened for him. He is to make the offering in the same way he does on the Sabbath, and the gate is to be closed after he goes back out.”

The Daily Offering

13 The Lord says, “Every morning a one-year-old lamb without any defects is to be burned whole as an offering to the Lord. This offering must be made every day. 14 Also an offering of five pounds of flour is to be made every morning, along with one quart of olive oil for mixing with the flour. The rules for this offering to the Lord are to be in force forever. 15 The lamb, the flour, and the olive oil are to be offered to the Lord every morning forever.”

The Prince and the Land

16 The Sovereign Lord commands: “If the ruling prince gives any of the land he owns to one of his sons as a present, it will belong to that son as a part of his family property. 17 (D)But if the ruling prince gives any of his land to anyone who is in his service, it will become the prince's property again when the Year of Restoration[b] comes. It belongs to him, and only he and his sons can own it permanently. 18 The ruling prince must not take any of the people's property away from them. Any land he gives to his sons must be from the land that is assigned to him, so that he will not oppress any of my people by taking their land.”

The Temple Kitchens

19 Then the man took me to the entrance of the rooms facing north near the gate on the south side of the inner courtyard. These are holy rooms for the priests. He pointed out a place on the west side of the rooms 20 and said, “This is the place where the priests are to boil the meat offered as sacrifices for sin or as repayment offerings, and to bake the offerings of flour, so that nothing holy is carried to the outer courtyard, where it might harm the people.”[c]

21-22 Then he led me to the outer courtyard and showed me that in each of its four corners there was a smaller[d] courtyard, 68 feet long and 48 feet wide. 23 Each one had a stone wall around it, with fireplaces built against the wall. 24 The man told me, “These are the kitchens where the Temple servants are to boil the sacrifices the people offer.”

1 Peter 1:13-2:10

A Call to Holy Living

13 So then, have your minds ready for action. Keep alert and set your hope completely on the blessing which will be given you when Jesus Christ is revealed. 14 Be obedient to God, and do not allow your lives to be shaped by those desires you had when you were still ignorant. 15 Instead, be holy in all that you do, just as God who called you is holy. 16 (A)The scripture says, “Be holy because I am holy.”

17 You call him Father, when you pray to God, who judges all people by the same standard, according to what each one has done; so then, spend the rest of your lives here on earth in reverence for him. 18 For you know what was paid to set you free from the worthless manner of life handed down by your ancestors. It was not something that can be destroyed, such as silver or gold; 19 it was the costly sacrifice of Christ, who was like a lamb without defect or flaw. 20 He had been chosen by God before the creation of the world and was revealed in these last days for your sake. 21 Through him you believe in God, who raised him from death and gave him glory; and so your faith and hope are fixed on God.

22 Now that by your obedience to the truth you have purified yourselves and have come to have a sincere love for other believers, love one another earnestly with all your heart.[a] 23 For through the living and eternal word of God you have been born again as the children of a parent who is immortal, not mortal. 24 (B)As the scripture says,

“All human beings are like grass,
and all their glory is like wild flowers.
The grass withers, and the flowers fall,
25 but the word of the Lord remains forever.”

This word is the Good News that was proclaimed to you.

The Living Stone and the Holy Nation

Rid yourselves, then, of all evil; no more lying or hypocrisy or jealousy or insulting language. Be like newborn babies, always thirsty for the pure spiritual milk, so that by drinking it you may grow up and be saved. (C)As the scripture says, “You have found out for yourselves how kind the Lord is.”

Come to the Lord, the living stone rejected by people as worthless but chosen by God as valuable. Come as living stones, and let yourselves be used in building the spiritual temple, where you will serve as holy priests to offer spiritual and acceptable sacrifices to God through Jesus Christ. (D)For the scripture says,

“I chose a valuable stone,
which I am placing as the cornerstone in Zion;
and whoever believes in him will never be disappointed.”
(E)This stone is of great value for you that believe; but for those who do not believe:
“The stone which the builders rejected as worthless
turned out to be the most important of all.”
(F)And another scripture says,
“This is the stone that will make people stumble,
the rock that will make them fall.”

They stumbled because they did not believe in the word; such was God's will for them.

(G)But you are the chosen race, the King's priests, the holy nation, God's own people, chosen to proclaim the wonderful acts of God, who called you out of darkness into his own marvelous light. 10 (H)At one time you were not God's people, but now you are his people; at one time you did not know God's mercy, but now you have received his mercy.

Psalm 119:33-48

A Prayer for Understanding

33 Teach me, Lord, the meaning of your laws,
and I will obey them at all times.
34 Explain your law to me, and I will obey it;
I will keep it with all my heart.
35 Keep me obedient to your commandments,
because in them I find happiness.
36 Give me the desire to obey your laws
rather than to get rich.
37 Keep me from paying attention to what is worthless;
be good to me, as you have promised.
38 Keep your promise to me, your servant—
the promise you make to those who obey you.
39 Save me from the insults I fear;
how wonderful are your judgments!
40 I want to obey your commands;
give me new life, for you are righteous.

Trusting the Law of the Lord

41 Show me how much you love me, Lord,
and save me according to your promise.
42 Then I can answer those who insult me
because I trust in your word.
43 Enable me to speak the truth at all times,
because my hope is in your judgments.
44 I will always obey your law,
forever and ever.
45 I will live in perfect freedom,
because I try to obey your teachings.
46 I will announce your commands to kings
and I will not be ashamed.
47 I find pleasure in obeying your commands,
because I love them.
48 I respect and love your commandments;
I will meditate on your instructions.

Ezekiel 44:1-45:12

The Use of the East Gate

44 The man led me to the outer gate at the east side of the Temple area. The gate was closed, and the Lord said to me, “This gate will stay closed and will never be opened. No human being is allowed to use it, because I, the Lord God of Israel, have entered through it. It is to remain closed. The ruling prince, however, may go there to eat a holy meal in my presence. He is to enter and leave the gateway through the entrance room at the inner end.”

Rules for Admission to the Temple

Then the man took me through the north gate to the front of the Temple. As I looked, I saw that the Temple of the Lord was filled with the dazzling light of his presence. I threw myself face downward on the ground, and the Lord said to me, “Mortal man, pay attention to everything you see and hear. I am going to tell you the rules and regulations for the Temple. Note carefully which persons are allowed to go in and out of the Temple, and which persons are not allowed.

“Tell those rebellious people of Israel that I, the Sovereign Lord, will no longer tolerate the disgusting things that they have been doing. They have profaned my Temple by letting uncircumcised foreigners, people who do not obey me, enter the Temple when the fat and the blood of the sacrifices are being offered to me. So my people have broken my covenant by all the disgusting things they have done. They have not taken charge of the sacred rituals in my Temple, but instead have put foreigners in charge.

“I, the Sovereign Lord, declare that no uncircumcised foreigner, no one who disobeys me, will enter my Temple, not even a foreigner who lives among the people of Israel.”

The Levites Are Excluded from the Priesthood

10 The Lord said to me, “I am punishing those Levites who, together with the rest of the people of Israel, deserted me and worshiped idols. 11 They may serve me in the Temple by taking charge of the gates and by performing the work of the Temple. They may kill the animals which the people offer for burnt offerings and for sacrifices, and they are to be on duty to serve the people. 12 But because they conducted the worship of idols for the people of Israel and in this way led the people into sin, I, the Sovereign Lord, solemnly swear that they must be punished. 13 They are not to serve me as priests or to go near anything that is holy to me or to enter the Most Holy Place. This is the punishment for the disgusting things they have done. 14 I am assigning to them the menial work that is to be done in the Temple.”

The Priests

15 The Sovereign Lord said, “Those priests belonging to the tribe of Levi who are descended from Zadok, however, continued to serve me faithfully in the Temple when the rest of the people of Israel turned away from me. So now they are the ones who are to serve me and come into my presence to offer me the fat and the blood of the sacrifices. 16 They alone will enter my Temple, serve at my altar, and conduct the Temple worship. 17 (A)When they enter the gateway to the inner courtyard of the Temple, they are to put on linen clothing. They must not wear anything made of wool when they are on duty in the inner courtyard or in the Temple. 18 So that they won't perspire, they are to wear linen turbans and linen trousers, but no belt. 19 (B)Before they go to the outer courtyard where the people are, they must first take off the clothes they wore on duty in the Temple and leave them in the holy rooms. They are to put on other clothing in order to keep their sacred clothing from harming the people.[a]

20 (C)“Priests must neither shave their heads nor let their hair grow long. They are to keep it a proper length. 21 (D)Priests must not drink any wine before going into the inner courtyard. 22 (E)No priest may marry a divorced woman; he is to marry only an Israelite virgin or the widow of another priest.

23 (F)“The priests are to teach my people the difference between what is holy and what is not, and between what is ritually clean and what is not. 24 When a legal dispute arises, the priests are to decide the case according to my laws. They are to keep the religious festivals according to my rules and regulations, and they are to keep the Sabbaths holy.

25 (G)“A priest is not to become ritually unclean by touching a corpse, unless it is one of his parents, one of his children or a brother or an unmarried sister. 26 After he has become clean again, he must wait seven days 27 and then go into the inner courtyard of the Temple and offer a sacrifice for his purification, so that he can serve in the Temple again. I, the Sovereign Lord, have spoken.

28 (H)“The priests have the priesthood as their share of what I have given Israel to be handed down from one generation to another. They are not to hold property in Israel; I am all they need. 29 (I)The grain offerings, the sin offerings, and the repayment offerings will be the priests' food, and they are to receive everything in Israel that is set apart for me. 30 The priests are to have the best of all the first harvest and of everything else that is offered to me. Each time the people bake bread, they are to give the priests the first loaf as an offering, and my blessing will rest on their homes. 31 (J)The priests must not eat any bird or animal that dies a natural death or is killed by another animal.”

The Lord's Portion of the Country

45 When the land is divided to give each tribe a share, one part is to be dedicated to the Lord. It is to be 10 miles long by 8 miles[b] wide. The entire area will be holy. In this area there is to be a square plot of land for the Temple, 840 feet on each side, entirely surrounded by an open space 84 feet wide. Half of this area, a section 10 miles by 4 miles, is to be measured off; it will contain the Temple, the holiest place of all. It will be a holy part of the country, set aside for the priests who serve the Lord in his Temple. It will contain their houses and the section of land for the Temple. The other half of the area is to be set aside as the possession of the Levites, who do the work in the Temple. There will be towns there for them to live in.[c]

Next to the holy area, another section, 10 miles long and 2 miles wide, is to be set aside for a city where any of the people of Israel may live.

Land for the Prince

Land is also to be set aside for the ruling prince. From the west boundary of the holy area it will extend west to the Mediterranean Sea; and from the east boundary it will extend to the eastern border of the country, so that its length will be the same as the length of one of the areas allotted to the tribes of Israel. This area will be the share the ruling prince will have in the land of Israel, so that he will no longer oppress the people, but will let the rest of the country belong to the tribes of Israel.

Rules for the Prince

The Sovereign Lord said, “You have sinned too long, you rulers of Israel! Stop your violence and oppression. Do what is right and just. You must never again drive my people off their land. I, the Sovereign Lord, am telling you this.

10 (K)“Everyone must use honest weights and measures:

11 “The ephah for dry measure is to be equal to the bath for liquid measure. The standard is the homer.[d] The resulting measures are as follows:

1 homer = 10 ephahs = 10 baths

12 “Your weights are to be as follows:

20 gerahs = 1 shekel[e]
60 shekels = 1 mina

Footnotes:

1 Peter 1:1-12

From Peter, apostle of Jesus Christ—

To God's chosen people who live as refugees scattered throughout the provinces of Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia. You were chosen according to the purpose of God the Father and were made a holy people by his Spirit, to obey Jesus Christ and be purified by his blood.

May grace and peace be yours in full measure.

A Living Hope

Let us give thanks to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! Because of his great mercy he gave us new life by raising Jesus Christ from death. This fills us with a living hope, (A)and so we look forward to possessing the rich blessings that God keeps for his people. He keeps them for you in heaven, where they cannot decay or spoil or fade away. They are for you, who through faith are kept safe by God's power for the salvation which is ready to be revealed at the end of time.

Be glad about this, even though it may now be necessary for you to be sad for a while because of the many kinds of trials you suffer. (B)Their purpose is to prove that your faith is genuine. Even gold, which can be destroyed, is tested by fire; and so your faith, which is much more precious than gold, must also be tested, so that it may endure. Then you will receive praise and glory and honor on the Day when Jesus Christ is revealed. You love him, although you have not seen him, and you believe in him, although you do not now see him. So you rejoice with a great and glorious joy which words cannot express, because you are receiving the salvation of your souls, which is the purpose of your faith in him.

10 It was concerning this salvation that the prophets made careful search and investigation, and they prophesied about this gift which God would give you. 11 They tried to find out when the time would be and how it would come.[a] This was the time to which Christ's Spirit in them was pointing, in predicting the sufferings that Christ would have to endure and the glory that would follow. 12 God revealed to these prophets that their work was not for their own benefit, but for yours, as they spoke about those things which you have now heard from the messengers who announced the Good News by the power of the Holy Spirit sent from heaven. These are things which even the angels would like to understand.

Psalm 119:17-32

Happiness in the Law of the Lord

17 Be good to me, your servant,
so that I may live and obey your teachings.
18 Open my eyes, so that I may see
the wonderful truths in your law.
19 I am here on earth for just a little while;
do not hide your commands from me.
20 My heart aches with longing;
I want to know your judgments at all times.
21 You reprimand the proud;
cursed are those who disobey your commands.
22 Free me from their insults and scorn,
because I have kept your laws.
23 The rulers meet and plot against me,
but I will study your teachings.
24 Your instructions give me pleasure;
they are my advisers.

Determination to Obey the Law of the Lord

25 I lie defeated in the dust;
revive me, as you have promised.
26 I confessed all I have done, and you answered me;
teach me your ways.
27 Help me to understand your laws,
and I will meditate on your wonderful teachings.[a]
28 I am overcome by sorrow;
strengthen me, as you have promised.
29 Keep me from going the wrong way,
and in your goodness teach me your law.
30 I have chosen to be obedient;
I have paid attention to your judgments.
31 I have followed your instructions, Lord;
don't let me be put to shame.
32 I will eagerly obey your commands,
because you will give me more understanding.

Proverbs 28:8-10

If you get rich by charging interest and taking advantage of people, your wealth will go to someone who is kind to the poor.

If you do not obey the law, God will find your prayers too hateful to hear.

10 If you trick an honest person into doing evil, you will fall into your own trap.

The innocent will be well rewarded.

Ezekiel 42:1-43:27, James 5:1-20, Psalms 119:1-116, Proverbs 28:6-7

Today is the 21st day of November. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I’m Brian and it is a pleasure to be here with you today as we move forward with the next step that invariably, if we keep taking them, will lead us to the end of the year and the end of the Bible. And what a journey it has been this year, indeed. So, the next step will take us back into the book of Ezekiel. We’re reading from the Good News Translation this week. Ezekiel chapter 42 verse 1 through 43 verse 27 today.

Commentary:

Okay. So, we concluded the letter of James today, and as we find in many of the letters of the Bible, the final words of these letters give incredible encouragement and practical life postures that we can actually get our minds around and live into. And as we look at James thoughts we have to remember that he wrote this letter to Hebrews, to Jewish brothers and sisters who had been forced to flee or to relocate because of the marginalization and persecution that was being faced. So, quoting James, “be patient then my friends until the Lord comes. See how patient farmers are as they wait for their land to produce precious crops. They wait patiently for the autumn and spring rains. You also must be patient.” So, for a person facing hardship like the people that were the recipients of this letter and for that matter like any of us who are facing hardship, those are words that give us a reason to take the next step, a reason to continue on, which means that they are speaking to each of us on some level. And what’s happening here is that James is reminding us that a process is taking place, one that requires that we be patient and practice endurance. And, obviously, at times this is very difficult because we live in a culture…and man…we are about to experience it full force…we live in a culture that promises instant gratification. And as we move into this holiday season everything’s gonna be thrown at us. But sanctification does not work that way. It’s not an instant gratification thing. It’s more like a farmer, right? A farmer can’t plant seed and harvest a crop the next day. And, so, sometimes this long wait, patiently waiting through the seasons, it just discourages us and in the discouragement we find ourselves behaving more like the children of Israel, right, grumbling through our wilderness experience. And, so, in the face of patience and endurance James gave a reality check. And , so, I’m quoting him again. “Do not complain against one another, my friends, so that God will not judge you. The judge is near ready to appear.” Right? So, in our season of waiting and endurance and being patient we can find ourselves discouraged and then we can find ourselves becoming cynical and then we can find ourselves lashing out other people and basically doing all of the things…like if we just read the book of James in reverse then we’ll find ourselves doing all the things that we’ve already covered. James is basically saying, you know, this is the way it works. You are you are being sanctified, you are being transformed, and that’s a process, and you’ll have to be patient in that process, If you try to take matters in your own hands, that won’t work. If you try to leech off other people, that won’t work. If you try to intimidate other people or wound in some way with your words other people, that’s not gonna work. There’s only one way this works. And, so, you can settle down and be patient and move through this season. It is not purposeless. Indeed, it may be hard, but it is not purposeless. And when you come out the other side of this you will be strong and there is no other way. This is how it works.

Prayer:

Father, we invite You into this process. Some seasons we are soaring, and our spirits are high and we’re enjoying all that You are doing in our lives and then in some seasons You invite us to go deeper. And that may be that we face external opposition or that may be that we’re just tilling the inner soil of our hearts and You are going after some things there that don’t need to be there anymore, and they need to be purged out and cleaned. And these seasons are more difficult, and they are the seasons that are a lot harder to endure, obviously. And, so, we invite Your Holy Spirit into this. May we always keep our hearts tuned to what You are doing because if we are walking with You, then You will show us what You are doing in our lives and we will not be confused. And when we enter a patch that may be a little bit more difficult or challenging we will know this is not purposeless. There is gold here. And, so, come Holy Spirit we pray. In Jesus name we ask. Amen.

Announcements:

dailyaudiobible.com is the website, its home base, its where you find out what’s going on around here as I mention often, like, as in every day because it’s where you stay connected, its where you find out what’s going on around here.

And man…we are…so, tomorrow’s Thanksgiving and that doesn’t mean something to everyone within the sound of my voice but to those of us who are residents in the United States, that’s a national holiday, it’s a day of giving thanks. And it, you know, Thanksgiving precedes a day known as Black Friday. And that’s the day…that’s the day…right…when Christmas season kind of begins and the shopping starts and all of the sales and incentives and all of this begin. And it’s this way around the world. And this is how our cultures work. Each year we bring out the Daily Audio Bible Christmas box and this year is no different. The Daily Audio Bible Christmas Box for 2018 is now available as of today couple, a couple of days in advance of Black Friday. We always sell out of these. And their purpose is to cram as much resource into one Box as we can possibly do - some serious stuff, some fun stuff, some stuff that you’ll want to keep and some stuff that you’ll want to give away as gifts. And I think this is a really helpful Box this year. So, here’s what’s in it: Our ever popular promised land series, the two DVD set that allows you to kind of zoom in and actually see and experience the places where the Bible happened. Like so many of the stories that will we’ve gone through in the Scriptures up until this point, they’re actually real places that still exist mostly in archaeological form. And over many years, we have painstakingly filmed every detail so that you can actually experience where these stories happened. So, that the double DVD project is in the is in the Christmas Box for 2018. And I’ve spent quite a little…no…I spent very little time this year so far talking about any of my own writings, any of my own books. I don’t know why…I just…you know…there’s a tension in me to talk about something that I’ve created and that I think would help you and that I think should get. It’s hard for me to like hawk that while at the same time I’ve included two of my books in the Christmas Boxes this year for a reason. And they will both books that were hard, hard, hard fought for. The first one is called Reframe - from the God we’ve made to God with us. And it was a very, very long struggle to really name and put into language what we are talking about when we are talking about being in a relationship with God. How does that even work? What is the shape of it? Like, rather than just saying, yeah, I’m in a relationship with God and that relationship amounts to me trying to give thanks at mealtimes and as I fall asleep in bed, as I’m going to sleep. Like that’s my relationship. And I go to church every Sunday. Like, is that a relationship with God? Because that wouldn’t be a relationship with anybody else. So, what is a relationship with God. And that was the first of a series of books, I believe, that are on spiritual transformation, like really trying to begin to dismantle and look at how we got here and why we believe what we do and what we’re talking about when we say some of these things. So, what is a relationship with God. That’s Reframe. And, you know, I’ve heard from hundreds and hundreds of people that Reframe’s something that they read every year, like at the beginning of every year just as a reset because it is a reframe. So, that’s in the Box. And my second book of spiritual transformation is called Sneezing Jesus. And man…we had the sneeze heard around the world when this released and it was kind of book 2 in this spiritual transformation process where, you know, leaving Reframe and saying, okay, now I understand that I am in a relationship with God and here’s how that looks. The question became, who am I in a relationship with? Because you can say I’m in a relationship with God and the Holy Spirit leads me but what does that mean, right? Like when we started distilling this stuff down we start finding that we are at a loss for the right words to describe something that is nearly indescribable. And, so, Sneezing Jesus was my attempt to…well I mean the book of John says that the word became flesh…and like…this this is my attempt to make the flesh become word. And its book 2 because if we are in a relationship with God, then what are the implications of that? Like what is our life really supposed to look like? Because we have the daily obligations or just the rhythms of our faith. Like, what we’re doing now. Like the Daily Audio Bible and having this rhythm every day. We have these things in our religion and our faith but for the most part we’re living, we’re biding our time hoping for an eternity that is better than now, where all is well, nothing is broken, nothing is lost, there are no more good goodbyes, and all our questions are answered. But is that the human experience? Is the human experience simply to be born and wait to die so that actual life can begin? Because is that we were going for here? Sneezing Jesus explores Jesus humanity, a portion of Jesus that we don’t actually focus a lot on. We know He was a human being and that He physically died on the cross, but we mostly think about Him as divine, as the son of the living God. And we should, He is. But he’s also equally, fully, according to the Scriptures, human. And, so, Jesus gives us the one true example that we can look at and say that’s what it’s supposed to look like, that’s how my life is supposed to look, right, which brings a literal meaning to the term Christ like. So, that’s Sneezing Jesus. And I believe that there are two more books in this transformation, a series of that’s what it’s called, I think. They’re not written yet. I’m wrestling with them. Like, I have to wrestle, wrestle, wrestle, wrestle, before I can even say something and then I have to wrestle for all of those words. But these first two are out and available and they are in the Christmas Box this year. Additionally, is another book. This book is called Going Solo. It was written by my friend Robert. I actually wrote the forward to his book because it deals with the topic that I think we are under supporting and that is the single parent journey even within the church. I mean Robert is a super humble guy and he’s never gonna grandstand but he has been one of the most influential people in the Christian music industry. So, like if you think of bands like…with…you know…little startup bands with names like Third Day. Well, it was Robert who brought them to light. However, he went through an incredibly traumatic season of being a single father to his daughters. And he tells that story. But beyond that, Robert is a visionary. So, having to walk through that season and finding how difficult it is to actually find your place and find any kind of support, especially when you’re just frantically running…like…there’s no time. Even if great things were available…like…your just exhausted all the time trying to maintain everything. So, he wrote. He wrote a story. But he wrote a story in such a way that it’s like a warm blanket, like when you’re exhausted and you’re walking this solo parenting journey. And, you know, like, you can’t just call someone up and share your heart. It’s gotta be like a give-and-take. And, so, you can end up even more exhausted. Like, there’s no one to just pour into you and to your brokenness, into your emptiness, into your loneliness. Yeah, that’s what Going Solo, that’s what this book is, it’s pouring into the exhausted single-parent and nothing is expected in return. It’s like a balm for the soul and I think it’s an important topic. And I know that I know that I know that there are tens of thousands of solo parents in the Daily Audio Bible community. And this is for you. But I also know that there’s probably no one listening to me that doesn’t have a solo parent in your life and this is for them because…listen…this isn’t a trite little book of…you know…well-worn promises and a pat on the back. This is honest, this is real, this is authentic, this is…this is where you are if you’re walking the solo parenting journey. So, Going Solo is in the Christmas Box this year. We have also included, since we are big fans of the Black Wing pencil around here and we’re big fans of journaling our way through the Scriptures around here. Last year we put a black wing pencil in the Christmas Box. We’re doing that again. These pencils, I love. I use these pencils every day of my life. But this year we were able to work with them and get Daily Audio Bible imprinted on the pencil. Like, we can’t sell them. That’s an unfortunate thing. We can’t sell them this way. They would not let us sell them this way, like in boxes of 12 like Black Wings, but we were able to include one in the Christmas Box. And, so, the Daily Audio Bible Black Wing edition is in the Christmas Box. Of course, annually we have the Daily Audio Bible Christmas bulb. And I think this is the sixth or seventh one. I put them my tree every year. We put them on our tree. And it’s…for me…having each one of those bulbs from each one of those years…I look at those bulbs and I say, “that is one revolution to the whole Bible.” And it reminds me of that journey, but it also reminds me of the Daily Audio Bible community that I love dearly, like with all my heart. And, so, it a way of like bringing you into our home at Christmas time. So, we’ve been doing these bulbs for, I don’t know, six or seven years. I’ll have to count them. Of course, our word for the year is “Hope” and the Christmas bulb includes the word for the year on it. And you can only get the Christmas bulb in the Daily Audio Bible Christmas Box each year. We only have limited quantities of these Boxes and then they sell out. So, we need all the stuff for all the Boxes. So, the Daily Audio Bible 2018 Christmas bulb is in the Box. We also include a pack of 20 of the Daily Audio Bible Christmas cards for the year. Now, those you can get separately in the Daily Audio Bible Shop. But these are beautiful. They’re beautiful this year. And on the front, they say our word for the year, “Hope.”  And these aren’t like…those of you who have been around kind of know the situation, but if this is your first Christmas with us, these are not like fake Christmas cards that are really, you know, an advertisement for the Daily Audio Bible. They’re not that. The only place they say Daily Audio Bible on them is on the very, very back like, where it would say Hallmark or whatever card that you bought. Inside there’s a verse of Scripture from the Christmas season and blank space for you to write. If you want to invite your friends and family to take the journey with you, then the Christmas card is a great way to do that. But this is part of our family experience. And, so, sending out the word “hope” here at the end of the year to all of our friends and family is a way of ceiling, that this has been a year of hope and it’s been hard-fought right? I’ve had to fight for hope all year and I don’t think I’m alone. But I have found that if you fight for it it exists and it is there and it’s never absent if you’re really looking with all your heart. So, to give hope is what we’re trying to do with the Christmas cards. Now there’s a pack of 20 of them and they include their envelopes and everything like that and that’s in the Christmas Box for 2018 but you can get them separate in the Shop as well. If you’re gonna send out more than 20 cards etc. etc. And then lastly is our Windfarm coffee or tea and your choice of coffee or tea. And I will be roasting, roasting, roasting the coffee. Our Windfarm coffee is roasted at altitude in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. And it’s delicious and you know, I drink it every day pretty much. Got my coffee mug just to my left as I speak. So, you can choose that or our boutique coffee or our boutique tea, which is delicious and is also something that that I drink. So, I said that’s it, lastly. But truly lastly we’re also throwing in a mystery item. We just kind of went through warehouse and we just have some additional resources laying around but not…like not enough for the whole Box or anything like that. And, so we thought that yeah, let’s, let’s include some of these resources. And, so, can’t tell you it will be. But everybody who gets a Christmas Box will get something else additional to what I just said. So, there you go. There’s the family Christmas Box for 2018 and it’s available now. Just go to dailyaudiobible.com and go into the Shop and find the Christmas section and you will find what you’re looking for.

Okay. So, with all of that having been said, these will go fast, they will sell out, they always do. But you, those of you who are international, who are not in the United States, and yes, that includes the house of you who are in Canada. We’ve gotten emails in the past about this like when they of arrived late from our Canadian brothers and sisters who are like, it’s not like I’m in Europe, I’m in Canada. But ironically you’re in a different country, which forces us to ship international, which slows the whole thing down to molasses. And we have a situation worked out with our friends at FedEx who allow us to be able to ship internationally at pretty close to domestic rates, like, way cheaper than regular international it just takes longer. So, having said all of what I’ve said, one week from today is the international cut off. Like one week from today, if you haven’t ordered your…by one week from today…if you haven’t ordered your Christmas Box and you’re not in the United States then we’re not sure…like we absolutely…we’ll send it…but we’re not sure it will get there for Christmas cause sometimes, you know, it takes several weeks. So, you will get it but if you wait, you may not get it in time for Christmas. If you are in the domestic United States then we’ve got some time on that, but they will sell out. So, there it is, the Christmas Box for 2018.

If you want to partner with the Daily Audio Bible in the mission that we share to bring God’s spoken word every single day without fail into the world, read fresh, and to continue to build community around that rhythm, if that is bringing life to you, then thank you for being life-giving back to Daily Audio Bible. Community Prayer and Praise:

Hi, this is Stephanie, the Lord’s Chic in Oklahoma and I was calling because Scott from Michigan called. And brother, thank you so much. That day I was really wondering if I was in the right field altogether. I’m an ER nurse and over time I’ve developed anxiety that at times can be crippling and have come to find out that as ER and ICU and paramedic, that we develop PTSD just like the soldiers do. But we can talk about it. We’re not allowed to say, hey, I’m feeling like I can’t take this anymore, if I see one more person to another bad thing to another person I’m just gonna lose it. And we’re warriors on those front lines. And after decades of doing this I’ve wondered if I can keep doing it. But if the Christians pull out than who’s going to be there? Thank you so much for calling that day because I was really thinking about maybe I just need to hang it up. So, my heart and love to you my brother, not only in Christ but in medicine. And I hope that you’re doing well. And to all the nurses and doctors and paramedics and firefighters in California, my love and prayers to all of you.

Hi this is Victoria Soldier just calling to pray for some of the DABbers. I wanted to say hi to Paula and let her know that I’m praying with you. Paula I don’t judge California because California’s the place where I received Christ as my Savior and I really believe that God is with it. I don’t understand was going there but I know that God is able and I’m praying that Lord, that you send down the rain like never before. Lord You send down the rain and You open up the windows of heaven for Your people for all they’re going through. Lord, let them look up to You knowing You are able, that You are able to do exceeding, that something that’s good is coming out of this. And Lord we’re looking for it Lord. We’re looking for Your rain, Lord. We’re looking for You to have Your way, that Your people will look up to You and say Lord, there’s no other God but that You are the living God. Oh Lord You continue to touch Your people, You continue to provide. You said You provide their every need according to the riches and glory. Remember what He did for Job. He gave Job more than He ever even had before. Just keep Your trust in him. Oh Lord, and I talked to my sister for Thanksgiving. My sister, don’t worry about Thanksgiving. Just thank God for the fact that You are there and You’re there to be a light and somebody needs Christ even in our own families. Lord I know what You’re going through because I’m going through the same in mine. I will not be with mine, but I will be there in heart and just trust that God will save and God will deliver and only God can heal even in families with challenges. Lord You touch Your people, You open up the doors no man can close. Help us to be thankful in knowing that God is faithful, that God is holy, and He said He’d never leave us nor forsake us and that He will supply all of our needs according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus. And Lord we give You the glory and the praise and honor. You touch Brian and their family and all the people of God and Lord we’ll give You the glory and honor and the praise and…

Hi this is Terry from Southern California. Hi Daily Audio Bible family. Just calling, I just want to lift up Paula. I heard your prayer request. I know Paula you live up in the fire area where so many homes were destroyed, and you lost your home. And I just want to let you know that we’re praying for you and we’re praying for your family and we just want the peace that surpasses all understanding, that God will give us peace whose eyes are stayed upon him. And, so, I just wanted to lift you up in prayer for comfort, for encouragement, and that whatever the future holds I know that God is holding the future for you and your family. And we want to pray for everybody who is impacted, not just the fires in the Thousand Oaks area of California but also in Northern California that so many people have lost so much in life, have been lost, and some are not found yet, but we still serve a God that owns the cattle on a thousand hill and the tide that looks low. So, we know that He can give us a peace that gets us through this time. So, Paula, I just want to let you know that we’re praying for you and I just pray that God’s peace would just be with you and your family. Amen. Bye.

Hey Daily Audio Bible family, it’s James the teacher in LA. Just an update as far as my mom and her condition. I called in and said that she…that her doctor discovered a precancerous growth in her uterus. And this coming Wednesday the 21st of November, she’s scheduled to have a hysterectomy. And it’s supposed to be a procedure in such a way that it’s actually pretty low key. I’m freaking out a little bit because, honestly the last time I had a parent calling me telling me that they were going through some stuff and it’s right around a holiday time, it was summer and I talked to my dad and he had a friend in town who was supposed to be helping out and while I was away he passed unexpectedly. And I’m freaking out a little about thinking about thus happening again because my wife and I gonna travel out of town for Thanksgiving. So, I just talked to my mom. She’s sure that she’s going to be an okay. She knows that we had our plans set before her surgery was set and she’s not…she’s not upset that we’re not gonna be there. She’s not concerned about the outcome of the surgery. But I know she doesn’t know the Lord. And I keep talking to her about it. And then two days a week, she just kind of keeps pushing away, pushing back. So, please pray family. Yeah. And everybody please drive carefully out there this holiday season. All right. I love you guys. Thank you. Bye.

Ezekiel 42-43

Two Buildings Near the Temple

42 Then the man took me into the outer courtyard and led me to a building on the north side of the Temple, not far from the building at the west end of the Temple. This building was 168 feet long and 84 feet wide. On one side it faced the space 34 feet wide which was alongside the Temple, and on the other side it faced the pavement of the outer courtyard. It was built on three levels, each one set further back than the one below it. Along the north side of this building was a passageway 16 feet wide and 168 feet long,[a] with entrances on that side. The rooms at the upper level of the building were narrower than those at the middle and lower levels because they were set further back. The rooms at all three levels were on terraces and were not supported by columns like the other buildings in the courtyard. 7-8 At the lower level the outer wall of the building was solid for 84 feet, half its length; and there were rooms in the remaining 84 feet. At the top level there were rooms in the entire length of the building. 9-10 Below these rooms at the east end of the building, where the wall of the courtyard began,[b] there was an entrance into the outer courtyard.

At the south[c] side of the Temple there was an identical building not far from the building at the west end of the Temple. 11 In front of the rooms there was a passageway just like the one on the north side. It had the same measurements, the same design, and the same kind of entrances. 12 There was a door under the rooms on the south side of the building, at the east end where the wall began.

13 The man said to me, “Both these buildings are holy. In them the priests who enter the Lord's presence eat the holiest offerings. Because the rooms are holy, the priests will place the holiest offerings there: the offerings of grain and the sacrifices offered for sin or as repayment offerings. 14 When priests have been in the Temple and want to go to the outer courtyard, they must leave in these rooms the holy clothing they wore while serving the Lord. They must put on other clothes before going out to the area where the people gather.”

The Measurements of the Temple Area

15 When the man had finished measuring inside the Temple area, he took me out through the east gate and then measured the outside of the area. 16 He took the measuring rod and measured the east side, and it was 840 feet. 17-19 Then he measured the north side, the south side, and the west side; each side had the same length, 840 feet,[d] 20 so that the wall enclosed a square 840 feet on each side. The wall served to separate what was holy from what was not.

The Lord Returns to the Temple

43 The man took me to the gate that faces east, (A)and there I saw coming from the east the dazzling light of the presence of the God of Israel. God's voice sounded like the roar of the sea, and the earth shone with the dazzling light. This vision was like the one I had seen when God came to destroy Jerusalem, and the one I saw by the Chebar River. Then I threw myself face downward on the ground. The dazzling light passed through the east gate and went into the Temple.

The Lord's spirit lifted me up and took me into the inner courtyard, where I saw that the Temple was filled with the glory of the Lord. The man stood beside me there, and I heard the Lord speak to me out of the Temple: “Mortal man, here is my throne. I will live here among the people of Israel and rule them forever. Neither the people of Israel nor their kings will ever again disgrace my holy name by worshiping other gods or by burying the corpses of[e] their dead kings. The kings built the doorsills and doorposts of their palace right against the doorsills and doorposts of my Temple, so that there was only a wall between us. They disgraced my holy name by all the disgusting things they did, and so in my anger I destroyed them. Now they must stop worshiping other gods and remove the corpses of[f] their kings. If they do, I will live among them forever.”

10 And the Lord continued, “Mortal man, tell the people of Israel about the Temple, and let them study its plan. Make them ashamed of their sinful actions. 11 Then if they are ashamed of what they have done, explain the plan of the Temple to them: its design, its entrances and exits, its shape, the arrangement of everything, and all its rules and regulations. Write all this down for them so that they can see how everything is arranged and can carry out all the rules. 12 This is the law of the Temple: All the area surrounding it on the top of the mountain is sacred and holy.”

The Altar

13 (B)These are the measurements of the altar, using the same unit of measure as in measuring the Temple. All around the base of the altar there was a gutter 20 inches deep and 20 inches wide, with a rim at the outside edge 10 inches high. 14 The lowest section of the altar, from the top of the base, was 4 feet high. The next section was set back from the edge 20 inches all around, and was 7 feet high. The section after that was also set back from the edge 20 inches all around. 15 This top section, on which the sacrifices were burned, was also 7 feet high. The projections on the four corners were higher than the rest of the top. 16 The top of the altar was a square, 20 feet on each side. 17 The middle section was also a square, 24 feet on each side, with a rim at the outside edge 10 inches high. (The gutter was 20 inches wide.) The steps going up the altar were on the east side.

The Consecration of the Altar

18 (C)The Sovereign Lord said to me, “Mortal man, listen to what I tell you. When the altar is built, you are to dedicate it by burning sacrifices on it and by sprinkling on it the blood of the animals that were sacrificed. 19 Those priests belonging to the tribe of Levi who are descended from Zadok are the only ones who are to come into my presence to serve me. I, the Sovereign Lord, command this. You will give them a young bull to offer as a sacrifice for sin. 20 You are to take some of its blood and put it on the projections on the top corners of the altar, on the corners of the middle section of the altar, and all around its edges. In this way you will purify the altar and consecrate it. 21 You are to take the bull that is offered as a sacrifice for sin and burn it at the specified place outside the Temple area. 22 The next day you are to take a male goat without any defects and offer it as a sacrifice for sin. Purify the altar with its blood the same way you did with the bull. 23 When you have finished doing that, take a young bull and a young ram, both of them without any defects, 24 and bring them to me. The priests will sprinkle salt on them and burn them as an offering to me. 25 Each day for seven days you are to offer a goat, a bull, and a ram as sacrifices for sin. All of them must be without any defects. 26 For seven days the priests are to consecrate the altar and make it ready for use. 27 When the week is over, the priests are to begin offering on the altar the burnt offerings and the fellowship offerings of the people. Then I will be pleased with all of you. I, the Sovereign Lord, have spoken.”

James 5

Warning to the Rich

And now, you rich people, listen to me! Weep and wail over the miseries that are coming upon you! (A)Your riches have rotted away, and your clothes have been eaten by moths. (B)Your gold and silver are covered with rust, and this rust will be a witness against you and will eat up your flesh like fire. You have piled up riches in these last days. (C)You have not paid any wages to those who work in your fields. Listen to their complaints! The cries of those who gather in your crops have reached the ears of God, the Lord Almighty. Your life here on earth has been full of luxury and pleasure. You have made yourselves fat for the day of slaughter. (D)You have condemned and murdered innocent people, and they do not resist you.[a]

Patience and Prayer

Be patient, then, my friends, until the Lord comes. See how patient farmers are as they wait for their land to produce precious crops. They wait patiently for the autumn and spring rains. You also must be patient. Keep your hopes high, for the day of the Lord's coming is near.

Do not complain against one another, my friends, so that God will not judge you. The Judge is near, ready to appear. 10 My friends, remember the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord. Take them as examples of patient endurance under suffering. 11 (E)We call them happy because they endured. You have heard of Job's patience, and you know how the Lord provided for him in the end. For the Lord is full of mercy and compassion.

12 (F)Above all, my friends, do not use an oath when you make a promise. Do not swear by heaven or by earth or by anything else. Say only “Yes” when you mean yes, and “No” when you mean no, and then you will not come under God's judgment.

13 Are any among you in trouble? They should pray. Are any among you happy? They should sing praises. 14 (G)Are any among you sick? They should send for the church elders, who will pray for them and rub olive oil on them in the name of the Lord. 15 This prayer made in faith will heal the sick; the Lord will restore them to health, and the sins they have committed will be forgiven. 16 (H)So then, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, so that you will be healed. The prayer of a good person has a powerful effect. 17 (I)Elijah was the same kind of person as we are. He prayed earnestly that there would be no rain, and no rain fell on the land for three and a half years. 18 (J)Once again he prayed, and the sky poured out its rain and the earth produced its crops.

19 My friends, if any of you wander away from the truth and another one brings you back again, 20 (K)remember this: whoever turns a sinner back from the wrong way will save that sinner's soul[b] from death and bring about the forgiveness of many sins.

Psalm 119:1-16

The Law of the Lord

119 Happy are those whose lives are faultless,
who live according to the law of the Lord.
Happy are those who follow his commands,
who obey him with all their heart.
They never do wrong;
they walk in the Lord's ways.
Lord, you have given us your laws
and told us to obey them faithfully.
How I hope that I shall be faithful
in keeping your instructions!
If I pay attention to all your commands,
then I will not be put to shame.
As I learn your righteous judgments,
I will praise you with a pure heart.
I will obey your laws;
never abandon me!

Obedience to the Law of the Lord

How can young people keep their lives pure?
By obeying your commands.
10 With all my heart I try to serve you;
keep me from disobeying your commandments.
11 I keep your law in my heart,
so that I will not sin against you.
12 I praise you, O Lord;
teach me your ways.
13 I will repeat aloud
all the laws you have given.
14 I delight in following your commands
more than in having great wealth.
15 I study your instructions;
I examine your teachings.
16 I take pleasure in your laws;
your commands I will not forget.

Proverbs 28:6-7

Better to be poor and honest than rich and dishonest.

Young people who obey the law are intelligent. Those who make friends with good-for-nothings are a disgrace to their parents.

Today is the 20th day of no November. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I am Brian and it is a pleasure to be here with you today. It’s great to have this time to step out of it all, whatever the chaos may be, whatever swirling, Yeah, this is a busy week, there’s a bunch going on as we approach the holidays. So, we have this opportunity to step away, just take a deep breath and move into a different space and just allow God’s word to speak. Whatever’s going on, it will still be there. Whatever we’ve got a deal with it sure would be better to deal with it with the Council of the Scriptures in our lives. And, so, we step away and take the next step as we’re moving through the Scriptures this year. We’re reading from the Good News Translation this week. Ezekiel chapter 40 verse 28 through 41 verse 26.

Commentary:

Okay. So, in the book of James we began our reading with a pretty simple question but it’s a loaded question. And the question is, where do all the fights and quarrels among you come from? So, let’s think about it, where do all the fights and quarrels among you come from? It’s worth a moment. What is the root cause of the tension within that then erupts into conflict without? Well, James gave us an answer. They come from your desires for pleasure, which are constantly fighting with in you. I mean in that question and answer there’s a zip, there’s like a crackle in that. We’ve gotta slow down here. We’re being told something very important and we’re being told very directly. Where do all the fights and quarrels among you come from? They come from your desires for pleasure, which are constantly fighting with in you. James is explaining that conflict arises due to our sense of us not having what we desire or us not having what we think we deserve in some way. And when we get the feeling that there’s something lacking, right, or we get the jealousy kind of coming up inside of us, envy because something that we desire is unattainable but someone else has it. And when we do this kind of stuff, we will turn probably to domination tactics, right, to take it by force from others or to diminish the joy that someone else may have so that they don’t get to enjoy what they have because we’re jealous. Thus, quarrels and fights among us. And it’s complicated to open up a door like this because there’s so many nuances connected to so many different things inside of us, but we have to at least acknowledge this wasn’t that complicated for James’s. His view was that when we find a deficit inside of ourselves and we try to balance the scales by attempting to force our will upon somebody else then we’re gonna come up empty because we’re looking in the wrong place. So, James summed it up like this. You want things, but you cannot have them. So, you are ready to kill. You strongly desire things, but you cannot get them so, you quarrel and fight. You do not have what you want because you do not ask God for it. And when you ask, you do not receive it because your motives are bad. You ask for things to use for your own pleasures. So, you know, once again were brushing up a blunt style of James. But it gives us an opportunity to…I mean…sometimes when something is so stark and blunt there’s nowhere to hide, it’s in the light, there’s nowhere to run. Like, you have to take a second and actually use the opportunity to explore what’s going on in the inner terrain of our hearts. And it’s easy enough to get condemned, but James wasn’t trying to hurl condemnation. He was working his way to the root cause of all of this. And here’s what he had to say. “Don’t you know that to be the world’s friend means to be God’s enemy? If you want to be the world’s friend you make yourself God’s enemy.” So, basically when we try to get our identity by following the way of the culture, right, the world, then we’ve gotten it so backward that, according to James, we put ourselves at odds with God, which is not a small thing friends. And that could explain a lot. Like, if we were to look at this in terms of putting our faith into action, right? Because yesterday we went through this “faith without works is dead”, then we would have to admit that the behavior that James is describing in our reading today is our declaration that God is not enough. Therefore, we need to look outside the relationship for what it is that we lack and we’re willing to go to battle to get what it is that we lack or feel like we deserve. So, yeah, try doing that with your spouse tonight. Darling, I am unfulfilled, and I have to admit that you are not enough. And, so, I’m going to need to look outside the relationship for what I lack. Right? Try that over dinner and see if it produces quarrels and fights among you. So, looking at all this leads us to, what I do you know? You know, what’s my next step? And thankfully, James has something to say about that. And it comes by way of a very, very famous passage. And this brings up a good point to point out famous passages again. We have just spent a few minutes discussing the context of what was in our reading from James today, which leads us to a famous passage of Scripture that we use continually but now we understand that the context of this passage is the question, “what is causing the quarrels and fights among you” and then the exploration of the inner terrain of that question. So, in terms of next steps - what are we supposed to do now that we know this - here’s what James has to say. “Submit your selves to God. Resist the devil and he will run away from you. Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash our hands, you sinners, purify your hearts, you hypocrites. Be sorrowful cry and weep. Change your laughter into crying, your joy into gloom. Humble yourselves before the Lord and He will lift you up.” So, that’s some humbling and convicting stuff there as we consider the things that are keeping us twisted up inside in conflict and quarrels all the time. So, let’s spend some time with James today. Let’s spend some time with this passage. There are keys to life in here that if we would begin to employ them would change the atmosphere. Like, no joke, would change the atmosphere around us. So, let’s invite the Holy Spirit to guide our hearts today to the places that our loyalties are divided because this is the source of the conflict within. these are the places that we’re trying to find an identity that only God can really give us. And, ultimately, this is what’s causing quarrels and fights among us.

Prayer:

Holy Spirit. Come, we invite you into that, every single one of us, we invite you into that. We become aware of our divided loyalties. We become aware of our selfishness. We become aware of the conflict and quarrels among us because of what we feel is lacking inside of us. And you are inviting us in the book of James to draw near to you, to come close to you, and you will come close to us. And when we are close, we are complete, we are whole, nothing is lacking. In your presence, there is the fruit of the spirit. In your presence there is unspeakable peace. We don’t have to go looking for how we can pilfer identity from what someone else may have achieved or as that we want. We are whole. We are at peace. All is as it should be when we are in your presence. And, so, it’s us, it’s not you. You’re not hiding, it’s us and we are commanded and given instructions to draw near. So, we do. We draw near to you. Come, Holy Spirit we pray. In Jesus’ name we ask. Amen.

The Daily Audio Bible Reading for Tuesday November 20, 2018 (NIV)

Ezekiel 40:28-41:26

The Inner Courtyard: The South Gate

28 The man took me through the south gateway into the inner courtyard. He measured the gateway, and it was the same size as the gateways in the outer wall. 29-30 Its guardrooms, its entrance room, and its inner walls were the same size as those in the other gateways. There were also windows in the rooms of this gateway. The total length was 84 feet and the width 42 feet. 31 Its entrance room faced the other courtyard, and palm trees were carved on the walls along the passageway. Eight steps led up to this gate.

The Inner Courtyard: The East Gate

32 The man took me through the east gateway into the inner courtyard. He measured the gateway, and it was the same size as the others. 33 Its guardrooms, its entrance room, and its inner walls measured the same as those in the other gateways. There were windows all around, and in the entrance room also. The total length was 84 feet and the width 42 feet. 34 The entrance room faced the outer courtyard. Palm trees were carved on the walls along the passageway. Eight steps led up to this gate.

The Inner Courtyard: The North Gate

35 Then the man took me to the north gateway. He measured it, and it was the same size as the others. 36 Like them, it also had guardrooms, decorated inner walls, an entrance room, and windows all around. Its total length was 84 feet and its width 42 feet. 37 The entrance room[a] faced the outer courtyard. Palm trees were carved on the walls along the passageway. Eight steps led up to this gate.

Buildings Near the North Gate

38 In the outer courtyard there was an annex attached to the inner gateway on the north side. It opened into the entrance room that faced the courtyard, and there they washed the carcasses of the animals to be burned whole as sacrifices. 39 In this entrance room there were four tables, two on each side of the room. It was on these tables that they killed the animals to be offered as sacrifices, either to be burned whole or to be sacrifices for sin or as repayment offerings. 40 Outside the room there were four similar tables, two on either side of the entrance of the north gate. 41 Altogether there were eight tables on which the animals to be sacrificed were killed: four inside the room and four out in the courtyard. 42 The four tables in the annex, used to prepare the offerings to be burned whole, were of cut stone. They were 20 inches high, and their tops were 30 inches square. All the equipment used in killing the sacrificial animals was kept on these tables. 43 Ledges 3 inches wide ran around the edge of the tables. All the meat to be offered in sacrifice was placed on the tables.[b]

44 Then he brought me into the inner court. There were two rooms opening on the inner court, one facing south beside the north gateway and the other facing north beside the south gateway.[c] 45 The man told me that the room which faced south was for the priests who served in the Temple, 46 and the room which faced north was for the priests who served at the altar. All the priests are descended from Zadok; they are the only members of the tribe of Levi who are permitted to go into the Lord's presence to serve him.

The Inner Courtyard and the Temple Building

47 The man measured the inner courtyard, and it was 168 feet square. The Temple was on the west side, and in front of it was an altar. 48 Then he took me into the entrance room of the Temple. He measured the entranceway: it was 9 feet deep and 24 feet wide,[d] with walls 5 feet thick on either side. 49 Steps led up to the entrance room, which was 34 feet wide and 20 feet deep.[e] There were two columns, one on each side of the entrance.

41 Next, the man took me into the central room, the Holy Place. He measured the passageway into it: it was 10 feet deep[f] and 18 feet wide, with walls 8 feet thick on either side. He measured the room itself: it was 68 feet long and 34 feet wide.

Then he went to the innermost room. He measured the passageway into it: it was 3 feet deep and 10 feet wide, with walls on either side 12 feet thick.[g] He measured the room itself, and it was 34 feet square. This room was beyond the central room. Then he said to me, “This is the Most Holy Place.”

The Rooms Built against the Temple Walls

The man measured the thickness of the inner wall of the Temple building, and it was 10 feet. Against this wall, all around the Temple, was a series of small rooms 7 feet wide. These rooms were in three stories, with thirty rooms on each floor. The Temple's outer wall on each floor was thinner than on the floor below, so that the rooms could rest on the wall without being anchored into it. And so the Temple walls, when seen from the outside, seemed to have the same thickness all the way to the top. Against the Temple's outer wall, on the outside of the rooms, two wide stairways were built, so that it was possible to go from the lower story to the middle and the upper stories.[h] 8-11 The outside wall of these rooms was 8 feet thick; there was one door into the rooms on the north side of the Temple, and one into those on the south side. I saw that there was a terrace 8 feet wide around the Temple; it was 10 feet above the ground and it was level with the foundation of the rooms by the Temple walls. Between the terrace and the buildings used by the priests there was an open space 34 feet across, along the sides of the Temple.

The Building on the West

12 At the far end of the open space on the west side of the Temple there was a building 150 feet long and 116 feet wide; its walls were 9 feet thick all around.

The Total Measurements of the Temple Building

13 The man measured the outside of the Temple, and it was 168 feet long. And from the back of the Temple, across the open space to the far side of the building to the west, the distance was also 168 feet. 14 The distance across the front of the Temple, including the open space on either side, was also 168 feet. 15 He measured the length of the building to the west, including its galleries on both sides, and it was also 168 feet.

Details of the Temple Building

The entrance room of the Temple, the Holy Place, and the Most Holy Place 16 were all paneled with wood from the floor to the windows. These windows could be covered.[i] 17 The inside walls of the Temple, up as high as above the doors, were completely covered with carvings[j] 18 of palm trees and winged creatures. Palm trees alternated with creatures, one following the other, all the way around the room. Each creature had two faces: 19 a human face that was turned toward the palm tree on one side, and a lion's face that was turned toward the tree on the other side. It was like this all around the wall, 20 from the floor to above the doors. 21 The doorposts of the Holy Place were square.

The Wooden Altar

In front of the entrance of the Most Holy Place there was something that looked like 22 a wooden altar. It was 5 feet high and 4 feet wide. Its corner posts, its base,[k] and its sides were all made of wood. The man said to me, “This is the table which stands in the presence of the Lord.”

The Doors

23 There was a door at the end of the passageway to the Holy Place and one also at the end of the passageway to the Most Holy Place. 24 They were double doors that swung open in the middle. 25 There were palm trees and winged creatures carved on the doors of the Holy Place, just as there were on the walls. And there was a wooden covering over the outside of the doorway of the entrance room. 26 At the sides of this room there were windows, and the walls were decorated with palm trees.[l]

James 4

Friendship with the World

Where do all the fights and quarrels among you come from? They come from your desires for pleasure, which are constantly fighting within you. You want things, but you cannot have them, so you are ready to kill; you strongly desire things, but you cannot get them, so you quarrel and fight. You do not have what you want because you do not ask God for it. And when you ask, you do not receive it, because your motives are bad; you ask for things to use for your own pleasures. Unfaithful people! Don't you know that to be the world's friend means to be God's enemy? If you want to be the world's friend, you make yourself God's enemy. Don't think that there is no truth in the scripture that says, “The spirit that God placed in us is filled with fierce desires.”[a] (A)But the grace that God gives is even stronger. As the scripture says, “God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.”

So then, submit yourselves to God. Resist the Devil, and he will run away from you. Come near to God, and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners! Purify your hearts, you hypocrites! Be sorrowful, cry, and weep; change your laughter into crying, your joy into gloom! 10 Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.

Warning against Judging One Another

11 Do not criticize one another, my friends. If you criticize or judge another Christian, you criticize and judge the Law. If you judge the Law, then you are no longer one who obeys the Law, but one who judges it. 12 God is the only lawgiver and judge. He alone can save and destroy. Who do you think you are, to judge someone else?

Warning against Boasting

13 (B)Now listen to me, you that say, “Today or tomorrow we will travel to a certain city, where we will stay a year and go into business and make a lot of money.” 14 You don't even know what your life tomorrow will be! You are like a puff of smoke, which appears for a moment and then disappears. 15 What you should say is this: “If the Lord is willing, we will live and do this or that.” 16 But now you are proud, and you boast; all such boasting is wrong.

17 So then, if we do not do the good we know we should do, we are guilty of sin.

Psalm 118:19-29

19 Open to me the gates of the Temple;
I will go in and give thanks to the Lord!

20 This is the gate of the Lord;
only the righteous can come in.

21 I praise you, Lord, because you heard me,
because you have given me victory.

22 (A)The stone which the builders rejected as worthless
turned out to be the most important of all.
23 This was done by the Lord;
what a wonderful sight it is!
24 This is the day of the Lord's victory;
let us be happy, let us celebrate!
25 (B)Save us, Lord, save us!
Give us success, O Lord!

26 (C)May God bless the one who comes in the name of the Lord!
From the Temple of the Lord we bless you.
27 The Lord is God; he has been good to us.
With branches in your hands, start the festival
and march around the altar.

28 You are my God, and I give you thanks;
I will proclaim your greatness.

29 Give thanks to the Lord, because he is good,
and his love is eternal.

Proverbs 28:3-5

Someone in authority who oppresses poor people is like a driving rain that destroys the crops.

If you have no regard for the law, you are on the side of the wicked; but if you obey it, you are against them.

Evil people do not know what justice is, but those who worship the Lord understand it well.

Ezekiel 39:1-40:27, James 2:18-3:18, Psalms 118:1-18, Proverbs 28:2

Today is the 19th day of November. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I am Brian. It is always, always, always a pleasure to be here with you, and that includes today, that includes right now. So, it’s great to be here with you to take the next step forward as we continue to move through this month and through the Scriptures. We’re reading from the Good News Translation this week. Ezekiel chapter 39 verse 1 through 40 verse 27 today.

Commentary:

Okay. So, we moved through the middle of James in today’s reading and if we’re paying attention then the profound implications of the letter of James continue to become more and more clear. James, his like main argument has been that faith is indeed where the story with God begins. However, faith without works is dead, right? So, faith without some kind of corresponding action isn’t a faith that is alive. So, quoting James, “show me how anyone can have faith without actions. I will show you my faith by my actions.” And then he gives like searing example. “Do you believe that there is only one God?” Right? So, like, if we were asked this question we would say yes. And James would respond, “good.” “The demons also believe, they believe there is only one God and they tremble with fear.” Right? So, he’s using this as an illustration to say okay, faith without it transforming you and in transforming you changing the way you do what you do, right, in other words your works or your actions. If they are not complementary, if they are not together then…well…then…we’re no better off than the demonic because they also believe what we believe, that there is only one God. In fact, they may have a more intimate knowledge of it than we do and they tremble with fear. So…ughhh…so this is why, like, the reformer Martin Luther didn’t appreciate the letter of James because so much of the apostle Paul’s work and for that matter what Martin Luther stood on was by faith alone - sola fide. So, if you are Protestant, then yes, the doctrine is…it is a gift…it is by faith. There’s nothing you can do to earn it. So, if you are Roman Catholic or are of the Orthodox Church or any non-Protestant church, then good works is the doctrine that you are taught. Good works are part of the conversion process. So, it seems like we got a pretty glaring discrepancy because on the one hand, we can hear from the apostle Paul it’ by grace alone, by faith alone, we can hear these things from the apostle Paul and then we can turn to James and find faith without works is dead. And, so, trying to define exactly what this all means, this is one of the reasons that we have different persuasions in the Christian faith. But I wonder if it’s really all that big of a discrepancy. I mean, I think we’ve lived long enough in our lives to understand that on our own we are not going to be able to perfect ourselves. And I have tried hard in my faith. I have tried hard. And no matter what I do I can perfect myself. And, so, we probably all feel the same. Maybe a few of you out there have perfected yourself and I would love to meet you. For me, I have to lean into grace every single day and mercy every single moment. And the only way that I can even believe that God would be merciful to me, a sinner, is through faith. And Paul and James are neither one arguing against that, right? It is through faith. In fact, James includes the reference to Abraham, sort of the centerpiece of Paul’s theology. So, I mean, like, the bottom line is, if you are shown mercy and grace in any area of your life do you not respond to it? Let’s say you’re late for work. Your rolling down the highway, you’re going 10 miles an hour over the speed limit, your frantic, it’s a mess, and you get pulled over and are like. great this makes matter so much worse, and the officer says hey, you were going 10 miles an hour over the speed limit. And you’re like, I’m so sorry, I’m running late and he lets you go. Are you gonna just go 10 miles an hour over the speed limit or will that grace cause you to actually obey the law and pay attention, right? Or maybe last week you got in a big fight with your spouse. It was a mess, it was really ugly, it was World War III, things were said that can’t be unsaid, it’s been kind of a Cold War in the house for several days now. And one spouse comes to the other and says, we were both wrong but I’m sorry for my part and I’m forgetting about the rest of this and forgetting about your part. Well, that’s probably going to lead to an embrace, like a work, an action. It’s probably going to lead to the restoration of something because something that was broken has been restored. So, maybe we can’t perfect ourselves before God and come into His presence in the end and say…with demands…I deserve to be here. I am here because I am perfect, and you have to acknowledge my perfection. None of us are gonna be able to do that. The only way that we can reach for perfection and actually put it on is through faith. However, if we do that, if we lean into the grace and mercy of God through faith, then it’s got to change the way we do what we do. Our actions become the outward representation, the physical expression, of the faith that we claim we have within. Like, if by faith we are…we are leaning into the mercy of God for all of the missteps on any given day, and we are looking through faith to the fact that sin is not a part of our story before, that God is making us perfect because He is perfect and He is within us, well then, that should be represented in every area of our lives and everything that we do. Hence, faith without works is dead. Where this all becomes a theological quagmire is whether your works have anything to do with your salvation. Paul would say, your salvation is a gift. James would say that salvation is a gift, but you better spend your entire life appreciating a gift you don’t deserve and that must be evident in the things you do. And one of the things that we do is talk. And for James, one of the ways we put our faith into action is evidenced by the way that we steward what we say. So, he likened our tongues to a bit in a horse’s mouth or to the rudder of a small ship. It’s a small part of our body, right, or a small part of a boat, but it steers the trajectory of our entire lives. In fact, James is bold enough to tell us that we can burn our entire lives down around us with our tongues. And we probably have. We know that there is power in words. We usually don’t think about the power of our words were saying them, but there is enormous power in our words. And it’s in the harnessing of that power, and using that power for good that we find ourselves challenged. But James point wasn’t there is mighty power in what we say, it was the duality that we use that mighty power, for good and for evil, which is bringing his “faith without works is dead” point home. So, quoting from James speaking of our tongue. “We use it to give thanks to our Lord and Father and also to curse other people who are created in the likeness of God. Words of thanksgiving and cursing pour out from the same mouth. My friends, this should not happen.” So, since our tongues have such power to bless and such power to curse, maybe the first and fundamental step that we have to take in putting our faith in the action and actually showing and demonstrating our faith, maybe the first step is to harness and control our tongues. We all know what can happen when we lose control and say things that we shouldn’t say. Like, we have the power to be angels of mercy or a stone-cold killer all on the same day and as James is telling us, this isn’t right, this shouldn’t be happening. So, plenty to consider from this little letter of James today, plenty to confront ourselves within today. And let’s do that. Let’s invite the Holy Spirit into the ways that we are and the ways that we are not putting our faith into action because, as we’ve learned, one of the ways we can immediately respond is to harness the power of our tongues for good. If we can control our tongues, since it’s steering the ship as it were, right? So, since it’s guiding the direction of our lives, if we can control our tongues the rest of us is going to follow, my body and soul, and will set us on a path that will put our faith in action in everything we do.

Prayer:

Father, we invite You into that. There’s a lot there but it does kind of boil down to this one action point, this one thing that we are commanded to do and can do if we’re paying attention, and that is to harness the power of our tongue. We are using that power for good and for evil and we are being encouraged to use it for good period and not use it for evil. And what would happen in our lives if all that we did was harness our tongue for good and for the use of Your kingdom? It would certainly change the trajectory of our lives and put our faith into action. So, come Holy Spirit we pray. This is a tall order and we cannot do this on our own. We need Your grace and we need Your mercy but we also need Your guidance and we submit ourselves to Your authority and we give the authority of our tongue to You. Come Holy Spirit we pray. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Dear Heavenly Father, sovereign Lord, You who are faithful and true, full of mercy and grace. Lord, please be very near to our sister Paula, the child advocate from LA who lost their home, her and her husband, in the fire. Lord, thank You that a cross still stood in the yard and an annual plant. And Lord, thank You that You will be present every step of the way to lead them forward into goodness and blessings such as they could never have imagined. Thank You, Lord that You hold Paula and her family in the palm of Your hand. And we pray for all the victims of these fires and of the shootings in Thousand Oaks and at the synagogue. Lord, please come…come to comfort and restore and show us the next right thing and power to live in Your love and believe You Lord and all Your promises to us. In Jesus’ name I pray. This is Candace from Oregon.

Good morning Daily Audio Bible family, this is Deborah from Providence, Rhode Island. Brian, family, and all behind the scenes, thank you for all that you do. Paula, the advocate, I heard you and I am praying for you and your family. I’m so sorry for what has happened, but you seem to be strong and I know you will come out of this stronger than ever. The new caller, I believe is Justin, welcome. You have joined a wonderful caring, loving community, that we’re all hear from you. Asia, I heard your call two weeks ago and I am praying for you. And all the other callers that have called in, you may now heat your name, but we are all praying for you. You may not always call but we are praying. I know I pray every day. I’ve been listening to DAB since 2006 and I haven’t missed a day and every day, every caller that calls in, I pray for them, I glorify God for them. And I thank Brian and his family for such a wonderful opportunity to come together and pray for others. Deborah from Providence, Rhode Island. You all have a blessed one.

Good morning, this is November 16th and this is Kris from South Carolina. And I’m just calling to ask for some prayer. Still…still separated and there’s days that I really struggle. I know that I’m supposed to hang on. God, He spoke to me in the last year. Trusting and believing and He put an end to this…put a stop to the divorce. And my husband and I have been married for almost 30 years and we haven’t been living together for five. And it’s been really hard. I still see him as the love of my life and I miss him. He had an affair, he moved out. And since then we had moved on but he appears to be with someone else. And I still love him and I’m still praying for him. And it’s hard because the relationship with my son is also strained. He lives with his dad and I don’t get to see him that much and I don’t get to talk to him that much. And I feel like I’m the bad guy in all of this. And all I’m doing is just praying, believing, and trusting for my entire family for restoration in my family, restoration in my son, and restoration with my husband. And sometimes I really struggle. And nights and weekends are the worst. And I just really need some prayer over this. Thank you so much for everything and for this Daily Audio Bible family. Have a good weekend. Thank you.

Hello, this is Christine with the bumpy dog and I am in a hospital because I have acute leukemia. I came into the hospital the end of September. The chemo I took doesn’t seem to be working. So, they did another bone biopsy, but it’s been such a horrible couple of days and the nighttime is always worse. Please pray for me that the Lord would heal me from this cancer. I thank you for your prayers for my family. And I just want to go home. Thank you. This afternoon someone had to be resuscitated across the hall. I’ve moved my room five times. I’m just so very frazzled and tired. Thank you for keeping me in your prayers.

Ezekiel 39:1-40:27

The Defeat of Gog

39 The Sovereign Lord said, “Mortal man, denounce Gog, the chief ruler of the nations of Meshech and Tubal, and tell him that I am his enemy. I will turn him in a new direction and lead him out of the far north until he comes to the mountains of Israel. Then I will knock his bow out of his left hand and his arrows out of his right hand. Gog and his army and his allies will fall dead on the mountains of Israel, and I will let their bodies be food for all the birds and wild animals. They will fall dead in the open field. I, the Sovereign Lord, have spoken. I will start a fire in the land of Magog and along all the seacoasts where people live undisturbed, and everyone will know that I am the Lord. I will make sure that my people Israel know my holy name, and I will not let my name be disgraced any more. Then the nations will know that I, the Lord, am the holy God of Israel.”

The Sovereign Lord said, “The day I spoke about is certain to come. The people who live in the cities of Israel will go out and collect the abandoned weapons for firewood. They will build fires with the shields, bows, arrows, spears, and clubs, and have enough to last for seven years. 10 They will not have to gather firewood in the fields or cut down trees in the forest, because they will have the abandoned weapons to burn. They will loot and plunder those who looted and plundered them.” The Sovereign Lord has spoken.

The Burial of Gog

11 The Lord said, “When all this happens, I will give Gog a burial ground there in Israel, in Travelers' Valley, east of the Dead Sea.[a] Gog and all his army will be buried there, and the valley will be called ‘The Valley of Gog's Army.’ 12 It will take the Israelites seven months to bury all the corpses and make the land clean again. 13 Everyone in the land will help bury them, and they will be honored for this on the day of my victory. I, the Sovereign Lord, have spoken. 14 After the seven months are over, men will be chosen to travel through the land in order to find and bury those bodies[b] remaining on the ground, so that they can make the land clean. 15 As they go up and down the country, every time they find a human bone, they will put a marker beside it so that the gravediggers can come and bury it in the Valley of Gog's Army. 16 (There will be a town nearby named after the army.) And so the land will be made clean again.”

17 (A)The Sovereign Lord said to me, “Mortal man, call all the birds and animals to come from all around to eat the sacrifice I am preparing for them. It will be a huge feast on the mountains of Israel, where they can eat meat and drink blood. 18 They are to eat the bodies of soldiers and drink the blood of the rulers of the earth, all of whom will be killed like rams or lambs or goats or fat bulls. 19 When I kill these people like sacrifices, the birds and animals are to eat all the fat they can hold and to drink blood until they are drunk. 20 At my table they will eat all they can hold of horses and their riders and of soldiers and fighting men. I, the Sovereign Lord, have spoken.”

The Restoration of Israel

21 The Lord said, “I will let the nations see my glory and show them how I use my power to carry out my just decisions. 22 The Israelites will know from then on that I am the Lord their God. 23 And the nations will know that the Israelites went into exile because of the sins which they committed against me. I turned away from them and let their enemies defeat them and kill them in battle. 24 I gave them what they deserved for their uncleanness and their wickedness, and I turned away from them.”

25 The Sovereign Lord said, “But now I will be merciful to Jacob's descendants, the people of Israel, and make them prosperous again. I will protect my holy name. 26 When they are once more living in safety in their own land, with no one to threaten them, they will be able to forget how they were disgraced for having betrayed me. 27 In order to show to the many nations that I am holy, I will bring my people back from all the countries where their enemies live. 28 Then my people will know that I am the Lord their God. They will know this, because I sent them into captivity and now gather them and bring them back into their own land, not leaving even one of them behind. 29 I will pour out my spirit on the people of Israel and never again turn away from them. I, the Sovereign Lord, have spoken.”

A VISION OF THE FUTURE TEMPLE (40.1— 48.35)

Ezekiel Is Taken to Jerusalem

40 It was the tenth day of the new year, which was the twenty-fifth year after we had been taken into exile and the fourteenth year after Jerusalem was captured. On that day I felt the powerful presence of the Lord, and he carried me away. (B)In a vision God took me to the land of Israel and put me on a high mountain. I saw in front of me[c] a group of buildings that looked like a city. (C)He took me closer, and I saw a man who shone like bronze. He was holding a linen tape measure and a measuring rod and was standing by a gateway.

He said to me, “Watch, mortal man. Listen carefully and pay close attention to everything I show you, because this is why you were brought here. You are to tell the people of Israel everything you see.”

The East Gate

(D)What I saw was the Temple, and there was a wall around it. The man took his measuring rod, which was 10 feet long, and measured the wall. It was 10 feet high and 10 feet thick. Then he went to the gateway that faced east. He went up the steps, and at the top he measured the entrance; it was 10 feet deep.[d] Beyond it there was a passageway, which had three guardrooms on each side. Each of the rooms was square, 10 feet on each side, and the walls between them were 8 feet thick. Beyond the guardrooms there was a passageway 10 feet long that led to an entrance room which faced the Temple. 8-9 He measured this room and found it was 14 feet deep. It formed that end of the gateway which was nearest the Temple, and at its far end the walls were 4 feet thick. (10 These guardrooms on each side of the passageway were all the same size, and the walls between them were all of the same thickness.)

11 Next, the man measured the width of the passageway in the gateway. It was 22 feet altogether, and the space between the open gates was 16 feet. 12 In front of each of the guardrooms there was a low wall 20 inches high and 20 inches thick. (The rooms were 10 feet square.) 13 Then he measured the distance from the back wall[e] of one room to the back wall[f] of the room across the passageway from it, and it was 42 feet. 14 The room at the far end led out to a courtyard. He measured that room and found it was 34 feet wide.[g] 15 The total length of the gateway from the outside wall of the gate to the far side of the last room was 84 feet. 16 There were small openings in the outside walls of all the rooms and also in the inner walls between the rooms. There were palm trees carved on the inner walls that faced the passageway.

The Outer Courtyard

17 The man took me through the gateway into the courtyard. There were thirty rooms built against the outer wall, and in front of them there was an area paved with stones, 18 which extended around the courtyard. This outer courtyard was at a lower level than the inner courtyard.

19 There was a gateway at a higher level that led to the inner courtyard. The man measured the distance between the two gateways, and it was 168 feet.[h]

The North Gate

20 Then the man measured the gateway on the north side that led into the outer courtyard. 21 The three guardrooms on each side of the passageway, the walls between them, and the entrance room all had the same measurements as those in the east gateway. The total length of the gateway was 84 feet and the width 42 feet. 22 The entrance room, the windows, and the carved palm trees were like those in the east gate. Here seven steps led up to the gate, and the entrance room was at the end facing the courtyard. 23 Across the courtyard from this north gateway was another gateway leading to the inner courtyard, just as there was on the east side. The man measured the distance between these two gateways, and it was 168 feet.

The South Gate

24 Next, the man took me to the south side, and there we saw another gateway. He measured its inner walls and its entrance room, and they were the same as the others. 25 There were windows in the rooms of this gateway just as in the others. The total length of the gateway was 84 feet and the width 42 feet. 26 Seven steps led up to it, and its entrance room was also at the end facing the courtyard. There were palm trees carved on the inner walls that faced the passageway. 27 Here, too, there was a gateway leading to the inner courtyard. The man measured the distance to this second gateway, and it was 168 feet.

James 2:18-3

18 But someone will say, “One person has faith, another has actions.” My answer is, “Show me how anyone can have faith without actions. I will show you my faith by my actions.” 19 Do you believe that there is only one God? Good! The demons also believe—and tremble with fear. 20 You fool! Do you want to be shown that faith without actions is useless?[a] 21 (A)How was our ancestor Abraham put right with God? It was through his actions, when he offered his son Isaac on the altar. 22 Can't you see? His faith and his actions worked together; his faith was made perfect through his actions. 23 (B)And the scripture came true that said, “Abraham believed God, and because of his faith God accepted him as righteous.” And so Abraham was called God's friend. 24 You see, then, that it is by our actions that we are put right with God, and not by our faith alone.

25 (C)It was the same with the prostitute Rahab. She was put right with God through her actions, by welcoming the Israelite spies and helping them to escape by a different road.

26 So then, as the body without the spirit is dead, also faith without actions is dead.

The Tongue

My friends, not many of you should become teachers. As you know, we teachers will be judged with greater strictness than others. (D)All of us often make mistakes. But if a person never makes a mistake in what he says, he is perfect and is also able to control his whole being. We put a bit into the mouth of a horse to make it obey us, and we are able to make it go where we want. Or think of a ship: big as it is and driven by such strong winds, it can be steered by a very small rudder, and it goes wherever the pilot wants it to go. So it is with the tongue: small as it is, it can boast about great things.

Just think how large a forest can be set on fire by a tiny flame! (E)And the tongue is like a fire. It is a world of wrong, occupying its place in our bodies and spreading evil through our whole being. It sets on fire the entire course of our existence with the fire that comes to it from hell itself. We humans are able to tame and have tamed all other creatures—wild animals and birds, reptiles and fish. But no one has ever been able to tame the tongue. It is evil and uncontrollable, full of deadly poison. (F)We use it to give thanks to our Lord and Father and also to curse other people, who are created in the likeness of God. 10 Words of thanksgiving and cursing pour out from the same mouth. My friends, this should not happen! 11 No spring of water pours out sweet water and bitter water from the same opening. 12 A fig tree, my friends, cannot bear olives; a grapevine cannot bear figs, nor can a salty spring produce sweet water.

The Wisdom from Above

13 (G)Are there any of you who are wise and understanding? You are to prove it by your good life, by your good deeds performed with humility and wisdom. 14 But if in your heart you are jealous, bitter, and selfish, don't sin against the truth by boasting of your wisdom. 15 Such wisdom does not come down from heaven; it belongs to the world, it is unspiritual and demonic. 16 Where there is jealousy and selfishness, there is also disorder and every kind of evil. 17 But the wisdom from above is pure first of all; it is also peaceful, gentle, and friendly; it is full of compassion and produces a harvest of good deeds; it is free from prejudice and hypocrisy. 18 And goodness is the harvest that is produced from the seeds the peacemakers plant in peace.

Psalm 118:1-18

A Prayer of Thanks for Victory

118 (A)Give thanks to the Lord, because he is good,
and his love is eternal.
Let the people of Israel say,
“His love is eternal.”
Let the priests of God say,
“His love is eternal.”
Let all who worship him say,
“His love is eternal.”

In my distress I called to the Lord;
he answered me and set me free.
(B)The Lord is with me, I will not be afraid;
what can anyone do to me?
It is the Lord who helps me,
and I will see my enemies defeated.
It is better to trust in the Lord
than to depend on people.
It is better to trust in the Lord
than to depend on human leaders.

10 Many enemies were around me;
but I destroyed them by the power of the Lord!
11 They were around me on every side;
but I destroyed them by the power of the Lord!
12 They swarmed around me like bees,
but they burned out as quickly as a brush fire;
by the power of the Lord I destroyed them.
13 I was fiercely attacked and was being defeated,
but the Lord helped me.
14 (C)The Lord makes me powerful and strong;
he has saved me.

15 Listen to the glad shouts of victory in the tents of God's people:
“The Lord's mighty power has done it!
16 His power has brought us victory—
his mighty power in battle!”

17 I will not die; instead, I will live
and proclaim what the Lord has done.
18 He has punished me severely,
but he has not let me die.

Ezekiel 37:1-38:23, James 1:19-2:17, Psalms 117:1-2, Proverbs 28:1

Today is the 18th day of November. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I’m Brian. It’s great to be here with you and, yeah, we’re turning the knob and stepping into a brand-new shiny, sparkly week and I’m looking forward to a great week and I hope the same is true for you as we kind of prepare to move ourselves into the holiday season. But one thing is sure and true, the rhythm that we have established all year long in bringing God’s spoken word into our lives every single day, this will continue to be a constant no matter how chaotic the season can become. So, with all of that said, let’s dive in. We’re in a new week, so we’ll read from a new translation and this week that will be the Good News Translation. And we’ll go back out into the book of Ezekiel. Today, chapter 37 verse 1 through 38 verse 23.

Prayer:

Father, we thank You for Your word and we thank You for this new week and all that it represents and sort of the…turning into the holiday season as we begin to contemplate Your arrival. And here in the United States with Thanksgiving coming up, it’s just a busy, busy season. So, the book of James comes at the right time for us to remind us that we can say whatever we want to say but if our actions don’t line up then all we’re doing is showing the disconnect within ourselves. Holy Spirit, we want to be whole and we want our faith to be more than just our talk. We want our faith to be our actions as well because as we were told today, faith without action or works is dead and that is not the story we want to be telling and it is most certainly not the story we want to be telling as we move into the final push, the final season of the year. And, so, come Holy Spirit, plant the word of God into our lives. Let us see that what was dead at one time can live again as we learn from the book of Ezekiel in the valley of dry bone today. We are so encouraged as we move into this week Lord. So, come Holy Spirit, plant Your word deep into our lives and let it permeate all of our choices and decisions, all of our actions in this coming week. We ask this in the mighty name of Jesus. Amen.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Good morning family, this is Cherry Chase Cherry pie, I hope all is well. I am calling to give some support. I just want to call…and I’m sorry…I’ll call out…your names slipped but you’re in California, you lost everything, your house, and everything is gone. I’m covering you sister, you and your family, and other people that’s there. It’s just a hard time for you guys. I ask God to cover you and ask for rain. Also, I want you guys to continue to pray for my job and my marriage. I’ve also seen God pull-through with my job that I hear other callers call in. So, I’m gonna lift you guys up that are having problems on the job, with people on the job, because the devil still is busy but God is even better. So, I still push hard but I’m asking you all to still cover me with my job and with my marriage. Again, I’ve tried to be more patient with Malcolm, tried to learn to talk and to speak to him without yelling. And I’m getting better but, you know, I’m still asking for that coverage. I’m also praying for all the married couples. We need prayer. The devil is busy. He’s trying to separate us. But the __ because we’ll stand and we’ll stray strong and we just have to keep continuing to push our own self. Sometimes you gotta get up and you got a push your own self and not wait for someone else to push for you. So, today if you don’t have that push I’m gonna push for you. I’m pushing for each and every one of you guys and I’m praying for you guys. I love you. You guys have a great and wonderful and marvelous holiday, I am. Talk to you soon.

Good morning DAB family, Michael from Mesa. It’s oh dark 30 this morning because I can’t sleep because of the tripping of my fire alarm that was going on because my battery was running low. So, it’s a great time to sit down and listen to DAB. And in the prayer request this morning, Paula the child advocate, we heard of your story and I am so sorry. Our hearts are with you girl. Our prayers are with you. And, so, let’s just go there shall we? Dear heavenly father we do pray for Paula and for all of those who have been in the way of the fire. And Lord we know that You understand what’s going on and that You have a handle on all of this. And we just pray that You would be with Paula and those who have suffered…suffered such a loss and be with them and help them to continue to see that they have You, that they can turn to You, that You are a great blessing, that You are the real inheritance. And yet we still go on day-to-day Lord where we need to eat and to drink and to live. Put shelter over their head. And, so, we pray Lord that You would be their great provider and to extend Your hand and great mercy to allow those that need help to receive it and to help us who can give Lord to do so. We thank You Lord for Your sovereignty and for Your great love. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen. Paula, we love You girl. Hang in there. This is Michael from Mesa.

Hello Daily Audio Bible family, this is Jay from Nashville. Just wanted to call and respond to Pamela, the pastor’s wife request for us to pray for those in California and the fires and to not judge a state. And, you know, up until this moment Pamela, I didn’t even realize that I was judging California. You know, it’s definitely one of the more liberal progressive states in our union but, you know, until you said that, I didn’t realize that I was judging it. And I have been. So, I must confess that and ask for forgiveness for those of you who live in California because that’s not my place. But at any rate, let’s pray. Heavenly father, Lord, we are just so overwhelmed and devastated by what’s been going on in California in the way of fires. And Lord in this prayer I would ask that You would forgive me for judging the state of California for different things that go against Your word when in reality I’ve done many things to go against Your word. So, with that said Lord, father, we pray for rain, we pray for a rain that has never been seen before for these fires, a rain that will extinguish this fire and put out the smoldering embers beneath, a rain that would put an end to the suffering in the destruction and the wildfires that are going on. And father we pray this, and we believe this according to Your will in the name of Jesus Christ we pray. Amen. I love You all. God, bless.

Hello, this is Not Shaken. Hello my dear friends, I am calling for something that a lot of us I’m sure are all concerned about and that is this Thanksgiving family time together. I know some of us have had estranged relationships and that’s true in my case. And I’m just praying for all of us that this turns out to be a very, very blessed Thanksgiving. And that if we do have these relationships going on that they can somehow be mended and if we have been hurt by others we set aside…I’m going to try very, very hard to put that beside myself so that I can just love these people through Jesus. And I’m going to just forget everything that’s happened and just smile and be happy. And I’m hoping that this, this is a very, very blessed Thanksgiving. God bless you all of you. Again, this is Not Shaken.

Ezekiel 37-38

The Valley of Dry Bones

37 I felt the powerful presence of the Lord, and his spirit took me and set me down in a valley where the ground was covered with bones. He led me all around the valley, and I could see that there were very many bones and that they were very dry. He said to me, “Mortal man, can these bones come back to life?”

I replied, “Sovereign Lord, only you can answer that!”

He said, “Prophesy to the bones. Tell these dry bones to listen to the word of the Lord. Tell them that I, the Sovereign Lord, am saying to them: I am going to put breath into you and bring you back to life. I will give you sinews and muscles, and cover you with skin. I will put breath into you and bring you back to life. Then you will know that I am the Lord.”

So I prophesied as I had been told. While I was speaking, I heard a rattling noise, and the bones began to join together. While I watched, the bones were covered with sinews and muscles, and then with skin. But there was no breath in the bodies.

God said to me, “Mortal man, prophesy to the wind.[a] Tell the wind that the Sovereign Lord commands it to come from every direction, to breathe into these dead bodies, and to bring them back to life.”

10 (A)So I prophesied as I had been told. Breath entered the bodies, and they came to life and stood up. There were enough of them to form an army.

11 God said to me, “Mortal man, the people of Israel are like these bones. They say that they are dried up, without any hope and with no future. 12 So prophesy to my people Israel and tell them that I, the Sovereign Lord, am going to open their graves. I am going to take them out and bring them back to the land of Israel. 13 When I open the graves where my people are buried and bring them out, they will know that I am the Lord. 14 I will put my breath in them, bring them back to life, and let them live in their own land. Then they will know that I am the Lord. I have promised that I would do this—and I will. I, the Lord, have spoken.”

Judah and Israel in One Kingdom

15 The Lord spoke to me again. 16 “Mortal man,” he said, “take a wooden stick and write on it the words, ‘The kingdom of Judah.’ Then take another stick and write on it the words, ‘The kingdom of Israel.’ 17 Then hold the two sticks end to end in your hand so that they look like one stick. 18 When your people ask you to tell them what this means, 19 tell them that I, the Sovereign Lord, am going to take the stick representing Israel and put it with the one that represents Judah. Out of the two I will make one stick and hold it in my hand.

20 “Hold in your hand the two sticks and let the people see them. 21 Then tell them that I, the Sovereign Lord, am going to take all my people out of the nations where they have gone, gather them together, and bring them back to their own land. 22 I will unite them into one nation in the land, on the mountains of Israel. They will have one king to rule over them, and they will no longer be divided into two nations or split into two kingdoms. 23 They will not defile themselves with disgusting idols any more or corrupt themselves with sin. I will free them from all the ways in which they sin and betray me. I will purify them; they will be my people, and I will be their God. 24 (B)A king like my servant David will be their king. They will all be united under one ruler and will obey my laws faithfully. 25 They will live on the land I gave to my servant Jacob, the land where their ancestors lived. They will live there forever, and so will their children and all their descendants. A king like my servant David will rule them forever. 26 I will make a covenant with them that guarantees their security forever. I will establish them and increase their population, and will see to it that my Temple stands forever in their land. 27 (C)I will live there with them; I will be their God, and they will be my people. 28 When I place my Temple there to be among them forever, then the nations will know that I, the Lord, have chosen Israel to be my own people.”

Gog as the Instrument of God

38 The Lord spoke to me. (D)“Mortal man,” he said, “denounce Gog, chief ruler of the nations of Meshech and Tubal in the land of Magog. Denounce him and tell him that I, the Sovereign Lord, am his enemy. I will turn him around, put hooks in his jaws, and drag him and all his troops away. His army, with its horses and uniformed riders, is enormous, and every soldier carries a shield and is armed with a sword. Troops from Persia, Ethiopia,[b] and Libya are with him, and all have shields and helmets. All the fighting men of the lands of Gomer and Beth Togarmah in the north are with him, and so are men from many other nations. Tell him to get ready and have all his troops ready at his command. After many years I will order him to invade a country where the people were brought back together from many nations and have lived without fear of war. He will invade the mountains of Israel, which were desolate and deserted so long, but where all the people now live in safety. He and his army and the many nations with him will attack like a storm and cover the land like a cloud.”

10 This is what the Sovereign Lord says to Gog: “When that time comes, you will start thinking up an evil plan. 11 You will decide to invade a helpless country where the people live in peace and security in unwalled towns that have no defenses. 12 You will plunder and loot the people who live in cities that were once in ruins. They have been gathered from the nations, and now they have livestock and property and live at the crossroads of the world. 13 The people of Sheba and Dedan and the merchants from the towns of Spain will ask you, ‘Have you assembled your army and attacked in order to loot and plunder? Do you intend to get silver and gold, livestock and property, and march off with all those spoils?’”

14 So the Sovereign Lord sent me to tell Gog what he was saying to him: “Now while my people Israel live in security, you will set out[c] 15 to come from your place in the far north, leading a large, powerful army of soldiers from many nations, all of them on horseback. 16 You will attack my people Israel like a storm moving across the land. When the time comes, I will send you to invade my land in order to show the nations who I am, to show my holiness by what I do through you. 17 You are the one I was talking about long ago, when I announced through my servants, the prophets of Israel, that in days to come I would bring someone to attack Israel.” The Sovereign Lord has spoken.

God's Punishment of Gog

18 The Sovereign Lord says, “On the day when Gog invades Israel, I will become furious. 19 I declare in the heat of my anger that on that day there will be a severe earthquake in the land of Israel. 20 Every fish and bird, every animal large and small, and every human being on the face of the earth will tremble for fear of me. Mountains will fall, cliffs will crumble, and every wall will collapse. 21 I will terrify Gog with all sorts of calamities.[d] I, the Sovereign Lord, have spoken. His men will turn their swords against one another. 22 I will punish him with disease and bloodshed. Torrents of rain and hail, together with fire and sulfur, will pour down on him and his army and on the many nations that are on his side. 23 In this way I will show all the nations that I am great and that I am holy. They will know then that I am the Lord.”

Hearing and Doing

19 (A)Remember this, my dear friends! Everyone must be quick to listen, but slow to speak and slow to become angry. 20 Human anger does not achieve God's righteous purpose. 21 So get rid of every filthy habit and all wicked conduct. Submit to God and accept the word that he plants in your hearts, which is able to save you.

22 Do not deceive yourselves by just listening to his word; instead, put it into practice. 23 If you listen to the word, but do not put it into practice you are like people who look in a mirror and see themselves as they are. 24 They take a good look at themselves and then go away and at once forget what they look like. 25 But if you look closely into the perfect law that sets people free, and keep on paying attention to it and do not simply listen and then forget it, but put it into practice—you will be blessed by God in what you do.

26 Do any of you think you are religious? If you do not control your tongue, your religion is worthless and you deceive yourself. 27 What God the Father considers to be pure and genuine religion is this: to take care of orphans and widows in their suffering and to keep oneself from being corrupted by the world.

Warning against Prejudice

My friends, as believers in our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory, you must never treat people in different ways according to their outward appearance. Suppose a rich man wearing a gold ring and fine clothes comes to your meeting, and a poor man in ragged clothes also comes. If you show more respect to the well-dressed man and say to him, “Have this best seat here,” but say to the poor man, “Stand over there, or sit here on the floor by my feet,” then you are guilty of creating distinctions among yourselves and of making judgments based on evil motives.

Listen, my dear friends! God chose the poor people of this world to be rich in faith and to possess the kingdom which he promised to those who love him. But you dishonor the poor! Who are the ones who oppress you and drag you before the judges? The rich! They are the ones who speak evil of that good name which has been given to you.

(B)You will be doing the right thing if you obey the law of the Kingdom, which is found in the scripture, “Love your neighbor as you love yourself.” But if you treat people according to their outward appearance, you are guilty of sin, and the Law condemns you as a lawbreaker. 10 Whoever breaks one commandment is guilty of breaking them all. 11 (C)For the same one who said, “Do not commit adultery,” also said, “Do not commit murder.” Even if you do not commit adultery, you have become a lawbreaker if you commit murder. 12 Speak and act as people who will be judged by the law that sets us free. 13 For God will not show mercy when he judges the person who has not been merciful; but mercy triumphs over judgment.

Faith and Actions

14 My friends, what good is it for one of you to say that you have faith if your actions do not prove it? Can that faith save you? 15 Suppose there are brothers or sisters who need clothes and don't have enough to eat. 16 What good is there in your saying to them, “God bless you! Keep warm and eat well!”—if you don't give them the necessities of life? 17 So it is with faith: if it is alone and includes no actions, then it is dead.
