Isaiah 37-38

Hezekiah Seeks Isaiah’s Counsel

37 When King Hezekiah heard their report,(A) he tore his clothes, put on sackcloth,(B) and went to the Lord’s temple. He sent Eliakim, who was in charge of the palace, Shebna the court secretary, and the leading priests, who were wearing sackcloth, to the prophet Isaiah son of Amoz. They said to him, “This is what Hezekiah says: ‘Today is a day of distress, rebuke, and disgrace.(C) It is as if children have come to the point of birth, and there is no strength to deliver them.(D) Perhaps the Lord your God will hear all the words of the royal spokesman, whom his master the king of Assyria sent to mock the living God,(E) and will rebuke him for the words that the Lord your God has heard. Therefore offer a prayer for the surviving remnant.’”(F)

So the servants of King Hezekiah went to Isaiah, who said to them, “Tell your master, ‘The Lord says this: Don’t be afraid(G) because of the words you have heard, with which the king of Assyria’s attendants have blasphemed me.(H) I am about to put a spirit(I) in him and he will hear a rumor and return to his own land, where I will cause him to fall by the sword.’”(J)

Sennacherib’s Letter

When the royal spokesman heard that the king of Assyria had pulled out of Lachish,(K) he left and found him fighting against Libnah.(L) The king had heard concerning King Tirhakah of Cush,(M) “He has set out to fight against you.” So when he heard this, he sent messengers to Hezekiah, saying, 10 “Say this to King Hezekiah of Judah: ‘Don’t let your God, on whom you rely, deceive you(N) by promising that Jerusalem won’t be handed over to the king of Assyria. 11 Look, you have heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all the countries: they completely destroyed them. Will you be rescued? 12 Did the gods of the nations(O) that my predecessors destroyed rescue them—Gozan,(P) Haran,(Q) Rezeph, and the Edenites in Telassar? 13 Where is the king of Hamath, the king of Arpad, the king of the city of[a] Sepharvaim, Hena, or Ivvah?’”

Hezekiah’s Prayer

14 Hezekiah took the letter from the messengers’ hands, read it, then went up to the Lord’s temple and spread it out before the Lord.(R) 15 Then Hezekiah prayed(S) to the Lord:

16 Lord of Armies, God of Israel, enthroned between the cherubim,(T) you are God(U)—you alone(V)—of all the kingdoms of the earth.(W) You made the heavens and the earth.(X) 17 Listen closely, Lord, and hear;(Y) open your eyes, Lord, and see.(Z) Hear all the words that Sennacherib has sent to mock the living God.(AA) 18 Lord, it is true that the kings of Assyria have devastated all these countries and their lands. 19 They have thrown their gods into the fire, for they were not gods(AB) but made from wood and stone(AC) by human hands.(AD) So they have destroyed them. 20 Now, Lord our God, save us from his power so that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that you, Lord, are God[b](AE)—you alone.(AF)

God’s Answer through Isaiah

21 Then Isaiah son of Amoz sent a message to Hezekiah: “The Lord, the God of Israel, says, ‘Because you prayed to me about King Sennacherib of Assyria, 22 this is the word the Lord has spoken against him:

Virgin Daughter Zion(AG)
despises you and scorns you;
Daughter Jerusalem shakes her head(AH)
behind your back.
23 Who is it you have mocked(AI) and blasphemed?
Against whom have you raised your voice
and lifted your eyes in pride?(AJ)
Against the Holy One of Israel!(AK)
24 You have mocked the Lord through[c] your servants.
You have said, “With my many chariots(AL)
I have gone up to the heights of the mountains,
to the far recesses of Lebanon.
I cut down its tallest cedars,
its choice cypress trees.
I came to its distant heights,
its densest forest.
25 I dug wells and drank water in foreign lands.[d]
I dried up all the streams of Egypt
with the soles of my feet.”(AM)

26 Have you not heard?(AN)
I designed it long ago;
I planned it in days gone by.(AO)
I have now brought it to pass,
and you have crushed fortified cities(AP)
into piles of rubble.
27 Their inhabitants have become powerless,
dismayed, and ashamed.
They are plants of the field,
tender grass,
grass on the rooftops,
blasted by the east wind.[e]

28 But I know your sitting down,
your going out and your coming in,(AQ)
and your raging against me.
29 Because your raging against me
and your arrogance have reached my ears,(AR)
I will put my hook in your nose(AS)
and my bit in your mouth;(AT)
I will make you go back
the way you came.

30 “‘This will be the sign for you:(AU) This year you will eat what grows on its own, and in the second year what grows from that. But in the third year sow and reap, plant vineyards and eat their fruit. 31 The surviving remnant of the house of Judah will again take root(AV) downward and bear fruit upward. 32 For a remnant(AW) will go out from Jerusalem, and survivors from Mount Zion. The zeal of the Lord of Armies will accomplish this.’(AX)

33 “Therefore, this is what the Lord says about the king of Assyria:

He will not enter this city,
shoot an arrow here,
come before it with a shield,
or build up a siege ramp against it.
34 He will go back
the way he came,
and he will not enter this city.

This is the Lord’s declaration.

35 I will defend this city and rescue it
for my sake(AY)
and for the sake of my servant David.”(AZ)

Defeat and Death of Sennacherib

36 Then(BA) the angel of the Lord(BB) went out and struck down one hundred eighty-five thousand in the camp of the Assyrians. When the people got up the next morning—there were all the dead bodies! 37 So King Sennacherib of Assyria broke camp and left. He returned home and lived in Nineveh.(BC)

38 One day, while he was worshiping in the temple of his god Nisroch, his sons Adrammelech and Sharezer struck him down with the sword and escaped to the land of Ararat.(BD) Then his son Esar-haddon(BE) became king in his place.

Hezekiah’s Illness and Recovery

38 In those days Hezekiah became terminally ill.(BF) The prophet Isaiah son of Amoz came and said to him, “This is what the Lord says: ‘Set your house in order,(BG) for you are about to die; you will not recover.’”[f]

Then Hezekiah turned his face to the wall and prayed to the Lord. He said, “Please, Lord, remember how I have walked before you faithfully and wholeheartedly,(BH) and have done what pleases you.”[g](BI) And Hezekiah wept bitterly.

Then the word of the Lord came to Isaiah: “Go and tell Hezekiah, ‘This is what the Lord God of your ancestor David says: I have heard your prayer; I have seen your tears. Look, I am going to add fifteen years to your life.[h](BJ) And I will rescue you and this city from the grasp of the king of Assyria; I will defend this city.(BK) This is the sign to you(BL) from the Lord that he will do what[i] he has promised:[j] I am going to make the sun’s shadow that goes down on the stairway of Ahaz go back by ten steps.’”(BM) So the sun’s shadow[k] went back the ten steps it had descended.

A poem by King Hezekiah of Judah after he had been sick and had recovered from his illness:

10 I said: In the prime[l] of my life(BN)
I must go to the gates of Sheol;(BO)
I am deprived of the rest of my years.
11 I said: I will never see the Lord,
the Lord in the land of the living;(BP)
I will not look on humanity any longer
with the inhabitants of what is passing away.[m]
12 My dwelling is plucked up and removed from me
like a shepherd’s tent.(BQ)
I have rolled up my life like a weaver;(BR)
he cuts me off from the loom.(BS)
By nightfall[n] you make an end of me.(BT)
13 I thought until the morning:
He will break all my bones like a lion.
By nightfall you make an end of me.
14 I chirp like a swallow or a crane;
I moan like a dove.(BU)
My eyes grow weak looking upward.
Lord, I am oppressed; support me.(BV)

15 What can I say?
He has spoken to me,
and he himself has done it.
I walk along slowly all my years(BW)
because of the bitterness of my soul.(BX)
16 Lord, by such things people live,(BY)
and in every one of them my spirit finds life;
you have restored me to health(BZ)
and let me live.(CA)
17 Indeed, it was for my own well-being
that I had such intense bitterness;(CB)
but your love has delivered me
from the Pit of destruction,(CC)
for you have thrown all my sins behind your back.(CD)
18 For Sheol cannot thank you;
Death cannot praise you.(CE)
Those who go down to the Pit
cannot hope for your faithfulness.
19 The living, only the living can thank you,
as I do today;
a father will make your faithfulness known to children.(CF)
20 The Lord is ready to save me;
we will play stringed instruments
all the days of our lives
at the house of the Lord.(CG)

21 Now Isaiah(CH) had said, “Let them take a lump of pressed figs and apply it to his infected skin, so that he may recover.” 22 And Hezekiah had asked, “What is the sign that I will go up to the Lord’s temple?”

Galatians 6

Carry One Another’s Burdens

Brothers and sisters, if someone is overtaken in any wrongdoing, you who are spiritual, restore such a person with a gentle(A) spirit,[a](B) watching out for yourselves so that you also won’t be tempted.(C) Carry one another’s burdens; in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.(D) For if anyone considers himself to be something when he is nothing,(E) he deceives himself. Let each person examine his own work,(F) and then he can take pride in himself alone, and not compare himself with someone else. For each person will have to carry his own load.

Let the one who is taught the word share(G) all his good things with the teacher. Don’t be deceived: God is not mocked. For whatever a person sows he will also reap, because the one who sows to his flesh will reap destruction from the flesh, but the one who sows to the Spirit(H) will reap eternal life(I) from the Spirit. Let us not get tired(J) of doing good,(K) for we will reap at the proper time if we don’t give up. 10 Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us work(L) for the good(M) of all, especially for those who belong to the household(N) of faith.(O)

Concluding Exhortation

11 Look at what large letters I use as I write to you in my own handwriting. 12 Those who want to make a good impression in the flesh(P) are the ones who would compel you to be circumcised(Q)—but only to avoid being persecuted(R) for the cross(S) of Christ. 13 For even the circumcised don’t keep(T) the law themselves, and yet they want you to be circumcised in order to boast about your flesh. 14 But as for me, I will never boast about anything except the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ. The world has been crucified to me through the cross, and I to the world. 15 For[b] both circumcision and uncircumcision(U) mean nothing; what matters instead is a new creation.(V) 16 May peace come to all those who follow this standard, and mercy even to the Israel(W) of God![c]

17 From now on, let no one cause me trouble, because I bear on my body the marks of Jesus.(X) 18 Brothers and sisters, the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit.(Y) Amen.

Psalm 65

Psalm 65

God’s Care for the Earth

For the choir director. A psalm of David. A song.

Praise is rightfully yours,[a]
God, in Zion;
vows to you will be fulfilled.(A)
All humanity will come to you,
the one who hears prayer.(B)
Iniquities overwhelm me;
only you can atone for our rebellions.(C)
How happy is the one you choose
and bring near to live in your courts!
We will be satisfied with the goodness of your house,
the holiness of your temple.[b](D)

You answer us in righteousness,
with awe-inspiring works,
God of our salvation,
the hope of all the ends of the earth
and of the distant seas.(E)
You establish the mountains by your power;
you are robed with strength.(F)
You silence the roar of the seas,
the roar of their waves,
and the tumult of the nations.(G)
Those who live far away are awed by your signs;
you make east and west shout for joy.(H)

You visit the earth and water it abundantly,
enriching it greatly.
God’s stream is filled with water,
for you prepare the earth in this way,
providing people with grain.(I)
10 You soften it with showers and bless its growth,
soaking its furrows and leveling its ridges.(J)
11 You crown the year with your goodness;
your carts overflow with plenty.[c](K)
12 The wilderness pastures overflow,
and the hills are robed with joy.(L)
13 The pastures are clothed with flocks
and the valleys covered with grain.(M)
They shout in triumph; indeed, they sing.(N)

The Daily Audio Bible Reading for Thursday September 20, 2018 (NIV)

Isaiah 33:10-36:22

10 “Now I will rise up,”(A) says the Lord.
“Now I will lift myself up.
Now I will be exalted.
11 You will conceive chaff;(B)
you will give birth to stubble.
Your breath is fire that will consume you.
12 The peoples will be burned to ashes,
like thorns cut down and burned in a fire.
13 You who are far off, hear what I have done;
you who are near,(C) know my strength.”
14 The sinners in Zion are afraid;
trembling seizes the ungodly:
“Who among us can dwell with a consuming fire?(D)
Who among us can dwell with ever-burning flames?”
15 The one who lives righteously
and speaks rightly,(E)
who refuses profit from extortion,
whose hand never takes a bribe,
who stops his ears from listening to murderous plots
and shuts his eyes against evil schemes(F)
16 he will dwell on the heights;
his refuge will be the rocky fortresses,
his food provided, his water assured.
17 Your eyes will see the King in his beauty;(G)
you will see a vast land.(H)
18 Your mind will meditate on the past terror:
“Where is the accountant?[a]
Where is the tribute collector?[b]
Where is the one who spied out our defenses?” [c]
19 You will no longer see the barbarians,
a people whose speech is difficult to comprehend—
who stammer in a language that is not understood.(I)
20 Look at Zion, the city of our festival times.
Your eyes will see Jerusalem,
a peaceful pasture,(J) a tent that does not wander;
its tent pegs will not be pulled up
nor will any of its cords be loosened.(K)
21 For the majestic one, our Lord, will be there,(L)
a place of rivers and broad streams
where ships that are rowed will not go,
and majestic vessels will not pass.(M)
22 For the Lord is our Judge,
the Lord is our Lawgiver,(N)
the Lord is our King.
He will save us.(O)
23 Your ropes are slack;
they cannot hold the base of the mast
or spread out the flag.
Then abundant spoil will be divided,
the lame will plunder it,
24 and none there will say, “I am sick.”
The people who dwell there
will be forgiven(P) their iniquity.(Q)

The Judgment of the Nations

34 You nations, come here and listen;
you peoples, pay attention!(R)
Let the earth and all that fills it hear,
the world and all that comes from it.(S)
The Lord is angry with all the nations,
furious with all their armies.(T)
He will set them apart for destruction,(U)
giving them over to slaughter.
Their slain will be thrown out,
and the stench of their corpses will rise;(V)
the mountains will flow[d] with their blood.(W)
All[e] the stars in the sky(X) will dissolve.
The sky will roll up like a scroll,(Y)
and its stars will all wither
as leaves wither on the vine,
and foliage on the fig tree.(Z)

The Judgment of Edom

When my sword has drunk its fill[f](AA) in the heavens,
it will then come down on Edom(AB)
and on the people I have set apart for destruction.
The Lord’s sword is covered with blood.
It drips with fat,
with the blood of lambs and goats,
with the fat of the kidneys of rams.(AC)
For the Lord has a sacrifice in Bozrah,(AD)
a great slaughter in the land of Edom.
The wild oxen will be struck[g] down with them,
and young bulls with the mighty bulls.
Their land will be soaked with[h] blood,
and their soil will be saturated with fat.
For the Lord has a day of vengeance,(AE)
a time of paying back Edom
for its hostility against Zion.
Edom’s streams will be turned into pitch,
her soil into sulfur;(AF)
her land will become burning pitch.
10 It will never go out—day or night.
Its smoke will go up forever.(AG)
It will be desolate, from generation to generation;
no one will pass through it forever and ever.(AH)
11 Eagle owls[i] and herons[j] will possess it,
and long-eared owls and ravens will dwell there.(AI)
The Lord will stretch out a measuring line
and a plumb line over her
for her destruction and chaos.(AJ)
12 No nobles will be left to proclaim a king,
and all her princes will come to nothing.
13 Her palaces will be overgrown with thorns;
her fortified cities, with thistles and briers.(AK)
She will become a dwelling for jackals,
an abode[k] for ostriches.(AL)
14 The desert creatures will meet hyenas,
and one wild goat will call to another.
Indeed, the night birds will stay there
and will find a resting place.
15 Sand partridges[l] will make their nests there;
they will lay and hatch their eggs
and will gather their broods under their shadows.
Indeed, the birds of prey will gather there,
each with its mate.(AM)
16 Search and read the scroll of the Lord:(AN)
Not one of them will be missing,
none will be lacking its mate,
because he has ordered it by my[m] mouth,
and he will gather them by his Spirit.
17 He has cast the lot for them;
his hand allotted their portion with a measuring line.
They will possess it forever;(AO)
they will dwell in it from generation to generation.

The Ransomed Return to Zion

35 The wilderness and the dry land will be glad;
the desert will rejoice and blossom like a wildflower.[n](AP)
It will blossom abundantly
and will also rejoice with joy and singing.
The glory of Lebanon will be given to it,
the splendor of Carmel and Sharon.(AQ)
They will see the glory of the Lord,(AR)
the splendor of our God.(AS)
Strengthen the weak hands,
steady the shaking knees!(AT)
Say to the cowardly:
“Be strong; do not fear!
Here is your God; vengeance is coming.(AU)
God’s retribution is coming; he will save you.”(AV)
Then the eyes of the blind will be opened,
and the ears of the deaf unstopped.(AW)
Then the lame will leap like a deer,(AX)
and the tongue of the mute will sing for joy,(AY)
for water will gush in the wilderness,
and streams in the desert;(AZ)
the parched ground will become a pool,
and the thirsty land springs.(BA)
In the haunt of jackals,(BB) in their lairs,
there will be grass, reeds, and papyrus.
A road will be there and a way;(BC)
it will be called the Holy Way.(BD)
The unclean will not travel on it,(BE)
but it will be for the one who walks the path.(BF)
Fools will not wander on it.
There will be no lion there,
and no vicious beast will go up on it;
they will not be found there.
But the redeemed will walk on it,
10 and the redeemed of the Lord will return(BG)
and come to Zion with singing,
crowned with unending joy.
Joy and gladness will overtake them,
and sorrow and sighing will flee.(BH)

Sennacherib’s Invasion

36 In the fourteenth year of King Hezekiah,(BI) King Sennacherib of Assyria attacked all the fortified cities of Judah and captured them. Then the king of Assyria sent his royal spokesman, along with a massive army, from Lachish(BJ) to King Hezekiah at Jerusalem. The Assyrian stood near the conduit of the upper pool, by the road to the Launderer’s Field.(BK) Eliakim son of Hilkiah, who was in charge of the palace, Shebna the court secretary,(BL) and Joah son of Asaph, the court historian, came out to him.

The royal spokesman said to them, “Tell Hezekiah:

The great king, the king of Assyria, says this: What are you relying on?[o] You[p] think mere words are strategy and strength for war. Who are you now relying on that you have rebelled against me?(BM) Look, you are relying on Egypt, that splintered reed of a staff(BN) that will pierce the hand of anyone who grabs it and leans on it. This is how Pharaoh king of Egypt is to all who rely on him.(BO) Suppose you say to me, ‘We rely on the Lord our God.’ Isn’t he the one whose high places and altars Hezekiah has removed, saying to Judah and Jerusalem, ‘You are to worship at this altar’?(BP)

“Now make a deal with my master, the king of Assyria. I’ll give you two thousand horses if you’re able to supply riders for them! How then can you drive back a single officer among the least of my master’s servants? How can you rely on Egypt for chariots and horsemen?(BQ) 10 Have I attacked this land to destroy it without the Lord’s approval? The Lord said to me, ‘Attack this land and destroy it.’”

11 Then Eliakim, Shebna, and Joah said to the royal spokesman, “Please speak to your servants in Aramaic,(BR) since we understand it. Don’t speak to us in Hebrew[q] within earshot of the people who are on the wall.”

12 But the royal spokesman replied, “Has my master sent me to speak these words to your master and to you, and not to the men who are sitting on the wall, who are destined with you to eat their own excrement and drink their own urine?”

13 Then the royal spokesman stood and called out loudly in Hebrew:

Listen to the words of the great king, the king of Assyria! 14 This is what the king says: “Don’t let Hezekiah deceive you,(BS) for he cannot rescue you. 15 Don’t let Hezekiah persuade you to rely on the Lord, saying, ‘The Lord will certainly rescue us! This city will not be handed over to the king of Assyria.’”

16 Don’t listen to Hezekiah, for this is what the king of Assyria says: “Make peace[r] with me and surrender to me. Then every one of you may eat from his own vine and his own fig tree(BT) and drink water from his own cistern 17 until I come and take you away to a land like your own land—a land of grain and new wine, a land of bread and vineyards. 18 Beware that Hezekiah does not mislead you by saying, ‘The Lord will rescue us.’(BU) Has any one of the gods of the nations(BV) rescued his land from the power of the king of Assyria? 19 Where are the gods of Hamath and Arpad?(BW) Where are the gods of Sepharvaim? Have they rescued Samaria from my power?(BX) 20 Who among all the gods of these lands ever rescued his land from my power? So will the Lord rescue Jerusalem from my power?”

21 But they kept silent; they didn’t say anything, for the king’s command was, “Don’t answer him.”(BY) 22 Then Eliakim son of Hilkiah, who was in charge of the palace, Shebna the court secretary, and Joah son of Asaph, the court historian, came to Hezekiah with their clothes torn and reported to him the words of the royal spokesman.

Galatians 5:13-26

13 For you were called(A) to be free, brothers and sisters; only don’t use this freedom as an opportunity[a] for the flesh, but serve one another through love. 14 For the whole law is fulfilled(B) in one statement: Love your neighbor as yourself.[b](C) 15 But if you bite and devour(D) one another, watch out, or you will be consumed by one another.

The Spirit versus the Flesh

16 I say then, walk by the Spirit(E) and you will certainly not carry out the desire of the flesh. 17 For the flesh desires(F) what is against the Spirit, and the Spirit desires what is against the flesh; these are opposed to each other, so that you don’t do what you want.(G) 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.

19 Now the works of the flesh are obvious:[c] sexual immorality,(H) moral impurity,(I) promiscuity,(J) 20 idolatry,(K) sorcery,(L) hatreds,(M) strife,(N) jealousy,(O) outbursts of anger,(P) selfish ambitions,(Q) dissensions,(R) factions,(S) 21 envy,[d](T) drunkenness, carousing,(U) and anything similar. I am warning you about these things—as I warned you before—that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.(V)

22 But the fruit of the Spirit(W) is love,(X) joy,(Y) peace, patience,(Z) kindness,(AA) goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness,(AB) and self-control.(AC) The law is not against such things.[e] 24 Now those who belong to Christ Jesus(AD) have crucified the flesh(AE) with its passions and desires.(AF) 25 If we live(AG) by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit. 26 Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another.(AH)

Psalm 64

Psalm 64

Protection from Evildoers

For the choir director. A psalm of David.

God, hear my voice when I am in anguish.(A)
Protect my life from the terror of the enemy.(B)
Hide me from the scheming of wicked people,(C)
from the mob of evildoers,(D)
who sharpen their tongues like swords
and aim bitter words like arrows,(E)
shooting from concealed places at the blameless.
They shoot at him suddenly and are not afraid.(F)
They adopt[a] an evil plan;
they talk about hiding traps and say,
“Who will see them?” [b](G)
They devise crimes and say,
“We have perfected a secret plan.”(H)
The inner man and the heart are mysterious.

But God will shoot them with arrows;
suddenly, they will be wounded.(I)
They will be made to stumble;
their own tongues work against them.
All who see them will shake their heads.(J)
Then everyone will fear
and will tell about God’s work,
for they will understand what he has done.(K)

10 The righteous one rejoices in the Lord
and takes refuge in him;
all those who are upright in heart
will offer praise.(L)

Isaiah 30:12-33:13, Galatians 5:1-12, Psalms 63:1-11, Proverbs 23:22

Today is the 19th day of September. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I’m Brian. It is a pleasure and a joy and an honor to come around the global campfire together. So, yeah, threw some logs on, poured a cup of coffee. Off we go. We’re reading from the Christian Standard Bible this week. Isaiah 30:12-33:9 today.

Commentary:

Okay. So, we’re working through the book of Isaiah and we’re pretty close to the center of the book. But it’s one of the longest books in the Bible and it can seem difficult to follow Isaiah if we’re trying to understand it as a cohesive narrative like we’re used to reading in story form. Because it seems like it’s jumping all over the place and it’s so full of imagery. This is because it’s not a single narrative story. The book of Isaiah is a collection of the utterances of God through Isaiah. So, it didn’t all happen at the same time and they didn’t all happen for the same reason. And they weren’t given to the same people. But we can certainly see the arc. We certainly see trouble forecast in Isaiah’s words. But the messages eventually turn toward hope and restoration. And we experience one of those turns today. In fact, some of today’s readings from Isaiah presents us with clear paths that can be chosen right now. So, Isaiah said, Only in returning to me - this is God speaking through Isaiah. Only in returning to me and resting in me will you be saved. In quietness and confidence is your strength. Think about that. That may be exactly what you need. That may be the exact counsel you need for what you’re facing today. And Isaiah clearly advises us to calm down. To return to God and find rest. And in that rest we will again discover our strength. So, we can take a deep breath. We can let it out slow. We can consider this path. It’s very clearly in front of us. But the alternative of that is also found in the same passage. But you would have none of it- God said, again through Isaiah. You said, No. We will get our help from Egypt. They will give us swift horses for riding into battle. But the only swiftness you’re gonna see is the swiftness of your enemies chasing you. So, two paths. One leads to quiet confidence and strength in God and one that relies on our own strength. And we’ll never out run whatever it is that’s chasing us. So, if we follow the latter path, we have a clear picture of where it’s going to lead. I mean, God said exactly where it’s going to lead. He said, You will be left like a lonely flag pole on a hill. Or like a tattered banner on a distant mountaintop. So, the Lord must wait for you to come to him so he can show you his love and compassion. That’s Isaiah 30:17-18. Go look it up for yourself. In other words, one path is going to waste our life and energy as we attempt to use that energy to out run whatever’s chasing us because we’re feebly relying on whatever it is that we’re relying on. But whatever it is that we’re relying on in our own strengths is unstable. And we can have it. We can have exactly what we want. If that’s what we want, we can have that. God will wait for us to come to him. And however, we’re also given this picture of that former path, one that runs to God and finds rest and salvation. And according to God what that’s gonna look like is that our own ears will hear him. Right behind us a voice will say, this is the way you should go. Walk in it. Whether to the right or the left. Then you’ll destroy all the idols. You’ll destroy all your silver idols and your gold images. And you’ll throw them out like filthy rags, saying, Be gone. Good riddance. So, in other words, clarity and direction are completely available to us if we will calm down and find our strength in God. And life from this place will allow us to see the falseness of what we’ve been putting our trust in. And we’ll throw the imposters out. So,, two paths from Isaiah. Two outcomes. Very clear. Which one are we going to choose today?

Prayer:

Father, we invite You into that question because it’s a penetrating one. It’s got many layers. But at the end of it all, it’s the choice of Your strength or whatever strength we can try to assemble on our own. Your strength is impenetrable. You are the almighty, sovereign God of heaven’s armies. Nothing can oppose You. Our strength, on the other hand, is significantly less. And yet we confess to our own impatience, our own chaos, our own drama and the ways in which we turn to our own strength, often before we even consider resting in You. Forgive us for this, Lord. Come, Holy Spirit, we pray. In Jesus name, we ask. Amen.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Good morning DAB family. This is Jared Pierre from Jacksonville North Carolina. Today is Sunday morning. We are still dealing with hurricane Florence’s aftermath, no electricity running. My prayer is for my fellow friends and family who are stuck here and dealing with this matter, waiting too, for a time to rebuild and get back and going with our daily life. And my condolences to the ones who have passed. My prayer request is that the Lord allows us in Jacksonville North Carolina a speedy recovery, resources be available to __ families, and that God will mend the hearts and strengthen the ones who have been hurt from the situation. I thank God for my safety that I’ve been able to maintain and I’m looking forward and excited to the recovery and helping recover my city, Jacksonville North Carolina, that every business including mine will actually grow and flourish and usher a better future. Thank you guys. Thank you DAB family.

Thank you God for giving me everything I’ve asked
you’ve freed me from my demons and my true self’s now unmasked
time is running short now as they say this too shall pass
I praise and thank you constantly there’s not much that I ask
the relationship I have with you I pray will always last
last is first and first his last a simple little verse
some men go from good to bad some from bad to worse
help me just be patient God and follow where you lead
help me not be selfish and consumed with lust and greed
wherever two are gathered I know that you’ll be there
keep my mind’s eye simple God and strip my ego bare
make me in your image God I’m flesh but still I’m clay
fill me with your spirit and renew my strength each day
one and one are usually two but you and I are one
finish God the work in me you clearly have begun

blindtony1016@gmail.com. Like to give a shout out to Drew from the Bay Area and also to Victoria Soldier. Hope you all are well. And Brian thank you once again for this wonderful podcast for God’s Holy Spirit to flow. Keep it flown’ ya’ll. All right. Bye-bye.

Hi DAB family this is Diane calling from Iowa and I recently celebrated my 10 year anniversary with the DAB. I would like to thank Brian and his family for their steadfast dedication in bringing us the word each and every day. Thank you to all those behind the scene that help make this podcast happen every day and to all those who donate to this ministry to keep it going. I would also like to say a special shout out to the individuals that write or type up the transcripts on Tumblr. I really appreciate being able to go back and read some of Brian’s commentaries every day. I’d like to request prayers for my daughters Emily and Katie. My oldest daughter Emily is a junior in college and is a music education major with hopes of becoming a high school band director. Last spring she was required to take a performance evaluation to determine whether or not she can continue on with the major and she did not pass that exam, which was very disheartening and discouraging to her but she does have the opportunity to retake that exam on September 27th. So, I would like to request prayers for her as she makes those final preparations to take that exam again. I would also like to request prayers for my younger daughter Katie who’s a senior in high school and she’s finishing up her high school career and planning on where to go to college. And I would like to request prayers for her that she would have wisdom and guidance as she makes those final decisions. Thank you family for all of your prayers. I love each and every one of you. Have a great day. Bye.

Hi this is Angelique from Linden Washington. I wanted to leave a prayer request for my son Grant. He’s  20 years old and I had called in the middle of July requesting prayer for him as he, at that time, was in a diving accident and he broke his neck. He is able to walk. It was a miracle. He’s actually headed back to school as I speak, right now. He got clearance from the doctor to go back. He does have some complications but hopefully they’ll be a reminder of it could’ve been worse. And we pray that he will come to a faith in the Lord. He went from, before the accident, he had professed to be atheist in the last two years. And today we talked to him and he…he’s…he’s saying he’s not atheist anymore, he’s agnostic. He believes that there’s a God, possibly. So, we’re praying for great faith for Grant, that God reveals Himself to him and that he will be outspoken for God and will let God use his eyes for His glory. All right. Thank you so much for your prayers. Blessings. Bye-bye.

Isaiah 28:14-30:11, Galatians 3:23-4:31, Psalms 62:1-12, Proverbs 23:19-21

Today is the 18th day of September. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I am Brian. And it’s a wonderful day to be together around this global campfire that we call our community. So it’s wonderful to be here with you today. And wonderful that we can take the next step as we move forward through the Bible on our journey this year. So we’ll head back out into the book of Isaiah where we’re working our way through. And we’re reading from the Christian Standard Bible this week. Isaiah 28:14-30:11 today.

Commentary:

Aright. So we spent a lot of time delving into the religious and theological challenges of Paul’s time in order to better understand where he was coming from, not only in his letter to the Galatians but in all of his writings. And we’ve looked at what made his views so controversial to the religious Jews and even Jewish people who had begun to follow Jesus. And this is the inclusion of the Gentiles and how that all works. So we sort of understand the challenges. And as modern followers of Jesus who are not dealing with those kinds of issues, we don’t understand how big of a deal it was for them to get their minds around. And we can wonder why these old arguments and problems have anything to do with us. Paul’s views made it into the Bible. It’s been a long time ago and it’s been a long time since these issues were life threatening for any of us. But if we put ourselves in Paul’s time and as one of his hearers, it can be mind blowing. So today Paul said, the law was our guardian until Christ came. And that law protected us until we could be made right with God through faith. And now that the way of faith has come, we don’t need the law anymore as our guardian. So from a modern perspective, using modern ears, we can think, Awesome. I don’t have to live under the law. The Mosaic law isn’t something I have to deal with. Thank God. God sees me as righteous before him because of my faith. However, when Paul referred to law, he was essentially referring to Torah, what would been understood to a Jewish person as scripture. So if we were to read the passage again and replace the word law with the word Bible, we would immediately see the challenge. Check it out. The Bible was our guardian until Christ came that protected us until we could be made right with God through faith. And now that the way of faith has come, we don’t need the Bible any more as our guardian. Right? That’s mind bending stuff. And we have to remember that the Bible we have, the Bible as we know it, did not exist when Paul wrote this letter. There were no Gospels. Matthew, Mark, Luke and John were not yet written. The New Testament was in no way formed. Nothing from Matthew to Revelation could have been referred to when Paul wrote Galatians. There might have been some letters floating around from Paul, but if there were a Bible in this context it would have been the Torah. So we see why these people had such a difficult time accepting the good news. And we can read from two thousand years later and go, This has all been established. This is the good news. I am free through my faith. I don’t have to obey the law. This has nothing to do with what I do and everything to do with God’s grace and mercy poured out on me. It is a gift. I cannot earn it. And yet, we are still doing the same things that they were. So let’s talk about it. Exactly what is the Bible? What is this that we’re reading everyday? Is it God’s holy word that instructs us on how to live our lives? We probably agree with that. We’d probably go for that. However, what if we obeyed everything the Bible says? Would following everything that the Bible…. Let’s just take the New Testament. What if we obeyed everything the New Testament says. Would following those rules make us right with God? You see that that’s what we’re trying to do? And that’s the measure that we’re judging everyone else as they’re trying to do it or not do it? So if this isn’t disruptive enough, let’s take this further. Paul wrote this today, speaking of our reality. You are all children of God through faith in Christ Jesus. And all who have been united with Christ in baptism have put on Christ, just like putting on new clothes. There’s no longer Jew or Gentile, there’s no longer slave or free, male or female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. And now that you belong to Christ, you are the true children of Abraham. You are his heirs. And God’s promise to Abraham belongs to you. That’s huge. But just reading those words, you just listening to those words, that doesn’t do anything. Having faith in those words and in the reality that those words describe, that changes everything. Which, in part, has been Paul’s point. It’s not adhering to a set of rules. Or joining a specific church that is going to save us. Actually, it’s not even the Bible that can save us. Rather, it’s the Bible that points the way to the God who can. So if we’re only processing words and obeying commands, we’ve missed the point. There is a God that is behind the Bible. And the Bible constantly points us to God. But if we don’t reach out in faith, we’re not gonna find God. We’re just gonna keep reading words about God. And throughout Paul’s letters that we’ve come to so far and throughout the rest of them that we will read, this is gonna be Paul’s point. Faith is the key. That if we don’t step beyond what we think we know and into a relationship with God by faith, than we haven’t gone anywhere. Which makes us finally consider the journey that we’re on, this faith journey that we are walking with our lives. Are we worshipping and defending the Bible? Or has its pages revealed God to us? A God with whom we’ve fallen in love? Do we read words that tell us that we can die to who we once were without Jesus? Or, by faith, have we actually died to the person we once were and that person doesn’t exist any more? So often, what we try to do is to attempt to obey the rules so that God will even notice us. Cause if we’re obeying the commands and following the rules, then we can call out to God with an expectation that he’s gonna answer us and do what we ask him to do. Paul, though. Paul spent his life trying to reveal the God behind it all. The God who has adopted us into his own family as children. Now, I don’t want any nasty e-mails from anyone saying I’m somehow denigrating the Bible. Seriously. I’ve been at this seven days a week for thirteen years. I love the Bible and I love studying the Bible and I love theology. I love it. However, tweaking it and continuing to study everything that we can possibility study about the Bible isn’t going to get us to God by default. It’s going to be faith in the promise of what the Bible tells us. And this is the crux of Paul’s entire doctrine. The whole thing started with a guy named Abraham. And the whole thing started with a promise that God gave to this guy named Abraham. And Abraham believed that promise and put his faith in that God. And that God, our God, thee God, the only God, counted that faith as righteousness. It was not about obeying rules. It was about believing and trusting in a promise and entering into a covenantal relationship with God that set the whole story in motion. And according to Paul, that’s what sets our story in motion as well.

Prayer:

And so Father, we invite You into that shaking, that disruption. That thing that takes it back out of our control. Because so often we’re just trying to get everything straight. Just tell me what to do to make this work. And that’s not how a relationship is shaped. And You have invited us into a covenantal relationship with Yourself that we receive and participate in through faith, through believing You, through trusting You. And we do. And we acknowledge we’re not capable of following all the rules, not on our own. But we are capable of trusting You. And we do trust You. Come Holy Spirit. Lead us into all truth. You have promised You will do this and we have put our faith in that promise. And so we trust You when we can’t trust anything else around us. When nothing else is making sense, even our own constructs. Even the ways to which we try to relate to You. Even when those stop working, we trust You and You alone. You are the sovereign God. There is no other place to put our hope. All of our hope is in You. So come Holy Spirit. We believe You will lead us into all truth. We ask this expectantly. In Jesus name. Amen.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Hi everybody this is Barbie from Janixsmith Pennsylvania. It is Saturday, September 15th and I just finished listening to today’s message and prayers. Micah I wanted to let you know that I’m praying for you. I have a couple friends that have been in the exact situation except on the other side as the woman. I’m praying for you that God will give you the wisdom to know what he’s asking you to fast from and that there will be forgiveness and redemption in your relationship with your fiancé. Taking that step of faith and being so honest with her is gonna show her a lot and there’s a lot of room for the two of you to grow through this, for Christ to deepen your relationship together and to give you a testimony that He can move mountains. I’m glad that you shared this with us so that we can pray with you and know that we’re with you. And let us know how your doing as the next couple of months pass by. I do also…would love to ask for some prayer from myself as well. This week I quit my job to become a stay-at-home mom and now that I’m doing that I feel vastly underprepared for the task at hand but I know that it is absolutely the right place to be. So, if you would please keep me in your prayers for that I would be thankful. I have a wonderful two year old little boy and he’s just making up and I’m off to take care of him but I love this community, I love you all. Thank you for everything you are in my life.

Hey fellow DABbers this is Joe the Protector from Georgia. It’s September 15th I believe, yup, and 7:47 in the morning. Just finished listening to the prayer line and the podcast for the 15th and wanted to call in about one of my brothers that had a request and about any other brother. It was Micah that we called in about his struggle with pornography and going through the fast before his marriage, a 53 day fast. So, Micah, here’s what I would have to say to you about that as a fellow brother who struggled with that before. It’s good if you are clean from it now but through your fast you made the statement that you want to hear from God and you want to know what he’s got to tell you and show you and how to reveal how to get away from it. Through your fast you need to make sure that you find true quiet times, not small quiet times, such as 5, 10 minutes. You need to spend…you need to find time to spend 30+ minutes in quiet time with God in worship, in meditation, in praise or however you feel most connected to God. And through that time and during those times throughout the 53 days period God will reveal Himself to you and He will give you the tools and the resources to battle and to actually endure and win…

Hello family this is Wonderful Counselor, referring to Jesus as our wonderful counselor and I am a first time caller from New England. I’m calling today in response to the lady who called in around mid-August about her broken family with issues of suicide, porn, and broken marriages. I want you to know that I’m praying for you and would love to connect with you. I’m also responding to the young man who’s engaged and confessed about porn to his fiancé. I’m praying for you too. And thank you Jesus that you are able to come clean to your fiancé and to this community. I would love to connect you to support for both you and your fiancé as you walk through this together. I am really passionate about healing through Jesus for porn and broken families because years ago my husband was enslaved to porn and sexual affairs and we could not find help. I believe this addiction to his __ at 35 leaving me to raise our six children alone but now I do know that there’s help and total freedom through Jesus. Please contact me if you’re struggling with any of these issues, both men and women. Please find me at wonderfulounselor101@gmail.com. I would also appreciate your prayers as I and some friends that have been delivered from porn and sexual abuse give presentations to churches in order to fight ignorance and offer hope and freedom. As you know, there’s much spiritual warfare involved in this work. I would love to connect with like-minded warriors against these bondages. Please find me at wonderfulcounselor101@gmail.com. Thank you and God bless you all.

Hi this is Mike I’m just calling for my wife Lindsay. She’s having a really hard time with her family. I kind of want to say there not really Christians, you know, but they are giving her a lot of grief because we chose to put our children in Christian Academy this year and it’s really weighing on her a lot and thus it’s weighing on me a lot so I thought I’d reach out to you guys who will pray a lot. And I appreciate you guys. God bless. Have a great week. Thanks so much. Bye.

The Daily Audio Bible Reading for Wednesday September 19, 2018 (NIV)

Isaiah 30:12-33:9

12 Therefore the Holy One of Israel says:
“Because you have rejected this message
and have trusted in oppression and deceit,
and have depended on them,
13 this iniquity(A) of yours will be
like a crumbling gap,
a bulge in a high wall
whose collapse will come in an instant—suddenly!
14 Its collapse will be like the shattering
of a potter’s jar,(B) crushed to pieces,
so that not even a fragment of pottery
will be found among its shattered remains—
no fragment large enough to take fire from a hearth
or scoop water from a cistern.”
15 For the Lord God, the Holy One of Israel, has said:
“You will be delivered by returning and resting;
your strength will lie in quiet confidence.
But you are not willing.”
16 You say, “No!
We will escape on horses”—
therefore you will escape!—
and, “We will ride on fast horses”—
but those who pursue you will be faster.(C)
17 One thousand will flee at the threat of one,(D)
at the threat of five you will flee,
until you remain
like a solitary pole on a mountaintop
or a banner on a hill.

The Lord’s Mercy to Israel

18 Therefore the Lord is waiting to show you mercy,
and is rising up to show you compassion,(E)
for the Lord is a just God.
All who wait patiently for him are happy.

19 For people will live on Zion in Jerusalem. You will never weep again; he will show favor to you at the sound of your outcry; as soon as he hears, he will answer you. 20 The Lord will give you meager bread and water during oppression,(F) but your Teacher[a] will not hide any longer. Your eyes will see your Teacher, 21 and whenever you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear this command behind you: “This is the way. Walk in it.”(G) 22 Then you will defile your silver-plated idols and your gold-plated images. You will throw them away like menstrual cloths, and call them filth.

23 Then he will send rain for your seed that you have sown in the ground, and the food, the produce of the ground, will be rich and plentiful. On that day your cattle will graze in open pastures.(H) 24 The oxen and donkeys that work the ground will eat salted fodder scattered with winnowing shovel(I) and fork. 25 Streams flowing with water will be on every high mountain and every raised hill on the day of great slaughter when the towers fall. 26 The moonlight will be as bright as the sunlight, and the sunlight will be seven times brighter(J)—like the light of seven days—on the day(K) that the Lord bandages his people’s injuries and heals the wounds he inflicted.(L)

Annihilation of the Assyrians

27 Look there! The Lord[b] is coming from far away,
his anger burning and heavy with smoke.[c]
His lips are full of fury,
and his tongue is like a consuming fire.
28 His breath is like an overflowing torrent(M)
that rises to the neck.(N)
He comes to sift the nations in a sieve of destruction
and to put a bridle on the jaws of the peoples
to lead them astray.(O)
29 Your singing will be like that
on the night of a holy festival,
and your heart will rejoice
like one who walks to the music of a flute,
going up to the mountain of the Lord,
to the Rock of Israel.(P)
30 And the Lord will make the splendor of his voice heard
and reveal his arm(Q) striking in angry wrath
and a flame of consuming fire,
in driving rain, a torrent, and hailstones.
31 Assyria will be shattered by the voice of the Lord.
He will strike with a rod.
32 And every stroke of the appointed[d] staff
that the Lord brings down on him
will be to the sound of tambourines and lyres;
he will fight against him with brandished weapons.
33 Indeed! Topheth has been ready(R)
for the king for a long time.
Its funeral pyre is deep and wide,
with plenty of fire and wood.
The breath of the Lord,(S) like a torrent of burning sulfur,
kindles it.

The Lord, the Only Help

31 Woe to those who go down to Egypt for help(T)
and who depend on horses!
They trust in the abundance of chariots
and in the large number of horsemen.(U)
They do not look(V) to the Holy One of Israel
and they do not seek the Lord.
But he also is wise and brings disaster.(W)
He does not go back on what he says;(X)
he will rise up against the house of the wicked
and against the allies of evildoers.
Egyptians are men, not God;
their horses are flesh, not spirit.
When the Lord raises his hand to strike,
the helper will stumble
and the one who is helped will fall;
both will perish together.

For this is what the Lord said to me:

As a lion or young lion growls over its prey(Y)
when a band of shepherds is called out against it,
and is not terrified by their shouting
or subdued by their noise,
so the Lord of Armies will come down
to fight on Mount Zion
and on its hill.(Z)

Like hovering birds,
so the Lord of Armies will protect Jerusalem(AA)
by protecting it, he will rescue it,
by sparing it, he will deliver it.

Return to the one the Israelites have greatly rebelled against.(AB) For on that day, every one of you will reject the silver and gold idols that your own hands have sinfully made.(AC)

Then Assyria will fall,
but not by human sword;
a sword will devour him,
but not one made by man.(AD)
He will flee from the sword;
his young men will be put to forced labor.(AE)

His rock[e] will pass away because of fear,(AF)
and his officers will be afraid because of the signal flag.(AG)

This is the Lord’s declaration—whose fire is in Zion and whose furnace is in Jerusalem.(AH)

The Righteous Kingdom Announced

32 Indeed, a king will reign righteously,
and rulers will rule justly.(AI)

Each will be like a shelter from the wind,
a refuge from the rain,(AJ)
like flowing streams(AK) in a dry land
and the shade of a massive rock in an arid land.
Then the eyes of those who see will not be closed,
and the ears of those who hear will listen.(AL)
The reckless mind will gain knowledge,
and the stammering tongue(AM) will speak clearly and fluently.
A fool will no longer be called a noble,(AN)
nor a scoundrel said to be important.
For a fool speaks foolishness
and his mind plots iniquity.
He lives in a godless way
and speaks falsely about the Lord.
He leaves the hungry empty
and deprives the thirsty of drink.(AO)

The scoundrel’s weapons are destructive;
he hatches plots to destroy the needy with lies,
even when the poor person says what is right.
But a noble person plans noble things;
he stands up for noble causes.
Stand up, you complacent women;(AP)
listen to me.
Pay attention to what I say,
you overconfident daughters.
10 In a little more than a year
you overconfident ones will shudder,
for the grapes will fail
and the harvest will not come.
11 Shudder, you complacent ones;
tremble, you overconfident ones!
Strip yourselves bare(AQ)
and put sackcloth around your waists.
12 Beat your breasts in mourning(AR)
for the delightful fields and the fruitful vines,(AS)
13 for the ground of my people
growing thorns and briers,(AT)
indeed, for every joyous house in the jubilant city.

14 For the palace will be deserted,
the busy city abandoned.
The hill and the watchtower will become
barren places forever,
the joy of wild donkeys,
and a pasture for flocks,
15 until the Spirit[f] from on high is poured out on us.(AU)
Then the desert will become an orchard,
and the orchard will seem like a forest.(AV)
16 Then justice will inhabit the wilderness,
and righteousness will dwell in the orchard.

17 The result of righteousness will be peace;(AW)
the effect of righteousness
will be quiet confidence forever.
18 Then my people will dwell in a peaceful place,
in safe and secure dwellings.
19 But hail will level the forest,[g](AX)
and the city will sink into the depths.(AY)
20 You will be happy as you sow seed
beside abundant water,(AZ)
and as you let oxen and donkeys range freely.(BA)

The Lord Rises Up

33 Woe, you destroyer never destroyed,
you traitor never betrayed!
When you have finished destroying,
you will be destroyed.
When you have finished betraying,
they will betray you.(BB)
Lord, be gracious to us! We wait for you.(BC)
Be our strength every morning
and our salvation in time of trouble.(BD)
The peoples flee at the thunderous noise;(BE)
the nations scatter when you rise in your majesty.
Your spoil will be gathered as locusts are gathered;
people will swarm over it like an infestation of locusts.
The Lord is exalted, for he dwells on high;
he has filled Zion with justice and righteousness.
There will be times of security for you—
a storehouse of salvation, wisdom, and knowledge.
The fear of the Lord is Zion’s treasure.(BF)
Listen! Their warriors cry loudly in the streets;
the messengers of peace weep bitterly.(BG)

The highways are deserted;
travel has ceased.
An agreement has been broken,(BH)
cities[h] despised,
and human life disregarded.
The land mourns and withers;(BI)
Lebanon is ashamed and wilted.
Sharon is like a desert;
Bashan and Carmel shake off their leaves.

Galatians 5:1-12

Freedom of the Christian

For freedom, Christ set us free. Stand firm(A) then and don’t submit again to a yoke of slavery.(B) Take note! I, Paul, am telling you that if you get yourselves circumcised, Christ will not benefit you at all. Again I testify to every man who gets himself circumcised that he is obligated to do the entire law. You who are trying to be justified by the law are alienated from Christ; you have fallen from grace.(C) For we eagerly await(D) through the Spirit, by faith, the hope(E) of righteousness. For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision accomplishes anything; what matters is faith(F) working through love.(G)

You were running well. Who prevented you from being persuaded regarding the truth?[a](H) This persuasion does not come from the one who calls you.(I) A little leaven[b] leavens the whole batch of dough. 10 I myself am persuaded in the Lord you will not accept any other view. But whoever it is that is confusing you will pay the penalty.(J) 11 Now brothers and sisters, if I still preach circumcision, why am I still persecuted? In that case the offense of the cross(K) has been abolished. 12 I wish those who are disturbing you might also let themselves be mutilated!

Psalm 63

Psalm 63

Praise God Who Satisfies

A psalm of David. When he was in the Wilderness of Judah.(A)

God, you are my God; I eagerly seek you.
I thirst for you;
my body faints for you
in a land that is dry, desolate, and without water.(B)
So I gaze on you in the sanctuary
to see your strength and your glory.(C)

My lips will glorify you
because your faithful love is better than life.(D)
So I will bless you as long as I live;
at your name, I will lift up my hands.(E)
You satisfy me as with rich food;[a](F)
my mouth will praise you with joyful lips.(G)

When I think of you as I lie on my bed,
I meditate on you during the night watches(H)
because you are my helper;(I)
I will rejoice in the shadow of your wings.(J)
I follow close to you;
your right hand holds on to me.(K)

But those who intend to destroy my life
will go into the depths of the earth.(L)
10 They will be given over to the power of the sword;(M)
they will become a meal for jackals.
11 But the king will rejoice in God;(N)
all who swear by him will boast,
for the mouths of liars will be shut.(O)

Isaiah 28:14-30:11

A Deal with Death

14 Therefore hear the word of the Lord,(A) you scoffers(B)
who rule this people in Jerusalem.
15 For you said, “We have made a covenant with Death,
and we have an agreement with Sheol;
when the overwhelming catastrophe[a] passes through,(C)
it will not touch us,
because we have made falsehood our refuge
and have hidden behind treachery.”
16 Therefore the Lord God said:
“Look, I have laid a stone(D) in Zion,
a tested stone,
a precious cornerstone, a sure foundation;(E)
the one who believes will be unshakable.[b](F)
17 And I will make justice the measuring line
and righteousness the mason’s level.”(G)
Hail will sweep away the false refuge,
and water will flood your hiding place.
18 Your covenant with Death will be dissolved,
and your agreement with Sheol will not last.
When the overwhelming catastrophe passes through,
you will be trampled.
19 Every time it passes through,
it will carry you away;
it will pass through every morning—
every day and every night.
Only terror(H) will cause you
to understand the message.[c]
20 Indeed, the bed is too short to stretch out on,
and its cover too small to wrap up in.
21 For the Lord will rise up as he did at Mount Perazim.(I)
He will rise in wrath, as at the Valley of Gibeon,(J)
to do his work, his unexpected work,
and to perform his task, his unfamiliar task.
22 So now, do not scoff,
or your shackles will become stronger.
Indeed, I have heard from the Lord God of Armies
a decree of destruction for the whole land.(K)

God’s Wonderful Advice

23 Listen and hear my voice.
Pay attention and hear what I say.
24 Does the plowman plow every day to plant seed?
Does he continuously break up and cultivate the soil?
25 When he has leveled its surface,
does he not then scatter black cumin and sow cumin?
He plants wheat in rows and barley in plots,
with spelt as their border.
26 His God teaches him order;
he instructs him.
27 Certainly black cumin is not threshed
with a threshing board,
and a cart wheel is not rolled over the cumin.
But black cumin is beaten out with a stick,
and cumin with a rod.
28 Bread grain is crushed,
but is not threshed endlessly.
Though the wheel of the farmer’s cart rumbles,
his horses do not crush it.
29 This also comes from the Lord of Armies.
He gives wondrous advice;
he gives great wisdom.(L)

Woe to Jerusalem

29 Woe to Ariel,[d] Ariel,
the city where David camped!(M)
Continue year after year;
let the festivals recur.
I will oppress Ariel,
and there will be mourning and crying,
and she will be to me like an Ariel.
I will camp in a circle around you;
I will besiege you with earth ramps,
and I will set up my siege towers against you.
You will be brought down;
you will speak from the ground,
and your words will come from low in the dust.
Your voice will be like that of a spirit from the ground;(N)
your speech will whisper from the dust.

Your many foes[e] will be like fine dust,(O)
and many of the ruthless, like blowing chaff.
Then suddenly, in an instant,(P)
you will be punished by the Lord of Armies
with thunder, earthquake, and loud noise,
storm, tempest, and a flame of consuming fire.(Q)
All the many nations(R)
going out to battle against Ariel—
all the attackers, the siege works against her,
and those who oppress her—
will then be like a dream, a vision in the night.(S)
It will be like a hungry one who dreams he is eating,
then wakes and is still hungry;
and like a thirsty one who dreams he is drinking,
then wakes and is still thirsty, longing for water.
So it will be for all the many nations
who go to battle against Mount Zion.

Stop and be astonished;
blind yourselves and be blind!
They are drunk,[f] but not with wine;
they stagger,[g] but not with beer.(T)
10 For the Lord has poured out on you
an overwhelming urge to[h] sleep;(U)
he has shut your eyes (the prophets)
and covered your heads (the seers).(V)

11 For you the entire vision will be like the words of a sealed document.(W) If it is given to one who can read and he is asked to read it,[i] he will say, “I can’t read it, because it is sealed.” 12 And if the document is given to one who cannot read and he is asked to read it,[j] he will say, “I can’t read.”

13 The Lord said:

These people approach me with their speeches(X)
to honor me with lip-service[k]
yet their hearts are far from me,
and human rules direct their worship of me.[l]
14 Therefore, I will again confound these people
with wonder after wonder.(Y)
The wisdom of their wise will vanish,(Z)
and the perception of their perceptive will be hidden.

15 Woe to those who go to great lengths
to hide their plans from the Lord.(AA)
They do their works in the dark,
and say, “Who sees us? Who knows us?” (AB)
16 You have turned things around,
as if the potter were the same as the clay.
How can what is made say about its maker,
“He didn’t make me”?(AC)
How can what is formed
say about the one who formed it,
“He doesn’t understand what he’s doing”?

17 Isn’t it true that in just a little while
Lebanon will become an orchard,
and the orchard will seem like a forest?(AD)
18 On that day the deaf will hear(AE)
the words of a document,
and out of a deep darkness
the eyes of the blind will see.
19 The humble will have joy
after joy in the Lord,
and the poor people will rejoice(AF)
in the Holy One of Israel.(AG)
20 For the ruthless one will vanish,
the scorner will disappear,(AH)
and all those who lie in wait with evil intent
will be killed—
21 those who, with their speech,
accuse a person of wrongdoing,
who set a trap for the one mediating at the city gate
and without cause deprive the righteous of justice.(AI)

22 Therefore, the Lord who redeemed Abraham(AJ) says this about the house of Jacob:

Jacob will no longer be ashamed,
and his face will no longer be pale.
23 For when he sees his children,
the work of my hands within his nation,
they will honor my name,
they will honor the Holy One of Jacob(AK)
and stand in awe of the God of Israel.(AL)
24 Those who are confused will gain understanding,
and those who grumble will accept instruction.

Condemnation of the Egyptian Alliance

30 Woe to the rebellious children!(AM)
This is the Lord’s declaration.
They carry out a plan,(AN) but not mine;
they make an alliance,
but against my will,
piling sin on top of sin.
Without asking my advice
they set out to go down to Egypt(AO)
in order to seek shelter under Pharaoh’s protection
and take refuge in Egypt’s shadow.(AP)
But Pharaoh’s protection will become your shame,
and refuge in Egypt’s shadow your humiliation.(AQ)
For though his[m] princes are at Zoan(AR)
and his messengers reach as far as Hanes,
everyone will be ashamed
because of a people who can’t help.
They are of no benefit, they are no help;
they are good for nothing but shame and disgrace.(AS)

A pronouncement(AT) concerning the animals of the Negev:[n]

Through a land of trouble and distress,
of lioness and lion,
of viper and flying serpent,(AU)
they carry their wealth on the backs of donkeys
and their treasures on the humps of camels,
to a people who will not help them.
Egypt’s help is completely worthless;
therefore, I call her:
Rahab Who Just Sits.(AV)

Go now, write it on a tablet in their presence
and inscribe it on a scroll;
it will be for the future,
forever and ever.
They are a rebellious people,
deceptive children,(AW)
children who do not want to listen to the Lord’s instruction.
10 They say to the seers, “Do not see,”
and to the prophets,
“Do not prophesy the truth to us.
Tell us flattering things.(AX)
Prophesy illusions.
11 Get out of the way!
Leave the pathway.
Rid us of the Holy One of Israel.”(AY)

Galatians 3:23-4:31

23 Before this faith(A) came, we were confined under the law, imprisoned until the coming faith was revealed.(B) 24 The law, then, was our guardian until Christ,(C) so that we could be justified by faith. 25 But since that faith(D) has come, we are no longer under a guardian, 26 for through faith you are all sons of God in Christ Jesus.

Sons and Heirs

27 For those of you who were baptized into Christ have been clothed with Christ.(E) 28 There is no Jew or Greek, slave or free,(F) male and female;(G) since you are all one(H) in Christ Jesus. 29 And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s seed, heirs(I) according to the promise.(J)

Now I say that as long as the heir(K) is a child, he differs in no way from a slave, though he is the owner(L) of everything. Instead, he is under guardians and trustees until the time set by his father. In the same way we also, when we were children, were in slavery under the elements[a] of the world.(M) When the time came to completion, God sent his Son,(N) born of a woman,(O) born under the law, to redeem those under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons.(P) And because you are sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son(Q) into our[b] hearts, crying, “Abba,[c] Father!” (R) So you are no longer a slave(S) but a son,(T) and if a son, then God has made you an heir.(U)

Paul’s Concern for the Galatians

But in the past, since you didn’t know God,(V) you were enslaved to things[d] that by nature are not gods. But now, since you know God,(W) or rather have become known by God, how can you turn back again to the weak and worthless(X) elements?(Y) Do you want to be enslaved to them all over again? 10 You are observing special days, months, seasons, and years.(Z) 11 I am fearful for you, that perhaps my labor for you has been wasted.

12 I beg you, brothers and sisters: Become like me, for I also became like you. You have not wronged me; 13 you know[e] that previously I preached the gospel to you because of a weakness of the flesh. 14 You did not despise or reject me though my physical condition was a trial for you.[f] On the contrary, you received me as an angel of God, as Christ Jesus himself.

15 Where, then, is your blessing? For I testify to you that, if possible, you would have torn out your eyes and given them to me. 16 So then, have I become your enemy because I told you the truth?(AA) 17 They court you eagerly, but not for good. They want to exclude you from me, so that you would pursue them. 18 But it is always good to be pursued[g] in a good manner—and not just when I am with you. 19 My children,(AB) I am again suffering labor pains(AC) for you until Christ is formed in you. 20 I would like to be with you right now and change my tone of voice, because I don’t know what to do about you.

Sarah and Hagar: Two Covenants

21 Tell me, you who want to be under the law, don’t you hear the law? 22 For it is written that Abraham(AD) had two sons, one by a slave(AE) and the other by a free woman. 23 But the one by the slave was born as a result of the flesh, while the one by the free woman was born through promise. 24 These things are being taken figuratively, for the women represent two covenants. One is from Mount Sinai(AF) and bears children into slavery—this is Hagar.(AG) 25 Now Hagar represents Mount Sinai in Arabia(AH) and corresponds to the present Jerusalem,(AI) for she is in slavery with her children. 26 But the Jerusalem above(AJ) is free, and she is our mother. 27 For it is written,(AK)

Rejoice, childless woman,(AL)
unable to give birth.
Burst into song and shout,
you who are not in labor,
for the children of the desolate woman will be many,
more numerous than those
of the woman who has a husband.[h](AM)

28 Now you too, brothers and sisters, like Isaac,(AN) are children of promise.(AO) 29 But just as then the child born as a result of the flesh persecuted the one born as a result of the Spirit,(AP) so also now.(AQ) 30 But what does the Scripture say? “Drive out the slave and her son, for the son of the slave will never be a coheir with the son of the free woman.”[i](AR) 31 Therefore, brothers and sisters, we are not children of a slave but of the free woman.(AS)

Psalm 62

Psalm 62

Trust in God Alone

For the choir director: according to Jeduthun.(A) A psalm of David.

Isaiah 25:1-28:13, Galatians 3:10-22, Ps 61:1-8, Proverbs 23:17-18

Today is the 17th day of September. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I’m Brian. It’s great to be here with you today. I hope you’re doing well and that you are as excited as I am for what the scriptures will bring into our lives today and throughout this week as we continue our journey together forward. And that journey forward will take us back into the book of Isaiah. And we’re working our way through Isaiah now and we’re reading from the Christian Standard Bible this week. Isaiah 25:1 - 28:13 today.

Commentary:

Okay. So, as we get our week going today, we come to an important doctrine in the Christian faith that is found in this letter to the Galatians. Have you ever heard the term justification by faith? This is how we get here. So, Paul says, Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us because it is written, Cursed is everyone who is hung on a tree. The purpose was that the blessing of Abraham would come to the Gentiles by Christ Jesus so that we could receive the promised Spirit through faith. So,, those two verses from Galatians today pretty much encapsulate the crux of Paul’s theological position for presenting the gospel to his fellow Hebrews and the hope that he had for the Gentiles. And it outlines what we just said. It outlines the doctrine of justification through faith. So, since Paul ended up dying for his convictions, we know that he fully believed that Jesus had given him this revelation personally. And because we know Paul was trained in the mosaic law as a Pharisee,  we can surmise the spiritual disruption this revelation brought to his personal life way before he ever became a controversial figure in the early days of the church. So, before Paul became a disruptive figure, he had to first be disrupted. Paul’s experiences with Jesus definitely disrupted him and flew in the face of what he thought he knew about God. Because, remember, Paul was trying to stamp out, wipe the name of Jesus from the lips of anyone who would speak it. So, he was disrupted, not only in what he  thought he knew about God but also in his theological training. Which forced Paul to go back through the whole story of the Hebrew people, which were his own people. Forced him to deeply consider Moses because mosaic law was the centerpiece of their entire religious experience. So, Paul had to think this whole thing through. And he came to some conclusions. So, it was Moses who led God’s people out of Egyptian slavery. And it was through Moses that the law was given. But Paul wanted to know the story before the story. And he looked to what happened long before Moses for the answers, which brought him to Abraham where the whole thing began. God made a promise to raise up a people through Abraham through which all the nations of the world would be blessed. So, for Paul, all the nations of the world being blessed explicitly must have been referring to non-Jewish people as well, right? Gentiles. And he realized that the whole story, the whole Hebrew story, began with a promise and not a law. This is a big deal for Paul. It would have been a big deal for any Pharisee or any Sadducee. So, Abraham believed the promise through faith. And God considered him righteous, not because he obeyed a rule, but because he trusted God. He put his faith in God and in God’s promise. So, in thinking that through, Paul realized when that promise was made and Abraham believed that promise, there was no law to obey. That law wouldn’t come for 430 more years. So, if we follow the logic, the law couldn’t be the means by which a person could be made right with God because Abraham and everybody who believed the promise after Abraham, including Moses, they didn’t have a law to obey in the first place. And this is what made Paul a controversial figure, right? Because it sounded heretical. It even sounded blasphemous. People tried to kill him over this. And he was simply trying to tell his fellow Hebrews their own story and revealing how Jesus intersects and is a part of that story. He’s just trying to help them to understand that the law was never the thing designed to make them right before God. It was faith in a promise. And so Paul summarized it by saying, Is the law, therefore, contrary to God’s promises? Absolutely not. For if the law had been granted with the ability to give life, than righteousness would certainly be on the basis of the law. But the scripture imprisoned everything under sin’s power so that the promise might be given on the basis of faith in Jesus Christ to those who believe. And this is how we arrive at the doctrine of justification by faith that has been passed on through the generations.

Prayer:

And so Father, we put our faith and our hope in the promise. And You have promised that You will never leave us or forsake us. We put our faith and hope in Your promises. And we invite Your Holy Spirit to increase our faith and lead us into all truth. And we ask this, knowing that You will answer. And we put our faith and hope in You and You alone. Come Holy Spirit, we pray. In Jesus name. Amen.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Good morning fellow DABbers. This is Joanne and Marie from Southern California. Today is Thursday, September 13th and I’m calling for prayer for wisdom, for discernment. I have been anxious for a couple of months cause I foolishly went off my meds and I’ve been back on them for two weeks; however, my anxiety is peaked! My psychiatrist has retired and I am trying to get into a psychiatrist, but the soonest I can get there is October. So, I am on the waiting list. And, so, my prayer is that I please get on…get to a psychiatrist sooner so I can get my meds straightened out. Right now I am on a leave of absence to take care of my dad who has dementia. And I’m sure that is why my anxiety is spiked. So, there you have it my friends. Again, my name is Joanne and Marie. I do covet your prayers and I thank you very much. God bless you and have a fabulous day. Thank you.

Hello family. This is Verna from Gainesville Florida. I am GG’s mom. I hardly ever call but I listen and keep up with DAB friends on Facebook. I’m calling today because I just heard Annette Allison mentioned Nana Jones. When she said that name my ears pricked up as I recently __ I was still on the DAB. Nana, the last time you call you were feeling discouraged about your daughter Tiffany who was working as an exotic dancer. I called and told you I was putting Tiffany on my list of people I pray an expanded version of the Lord’s prayer over. It’s a little different every day but it covers all the primary bases. It’d be great to hear an update on your daughter and also how your granddaughter’s is doing. I imagine she’s in school now. I’ve had and still have some rebel children, so those like Tiffany and Elizabeth Joy have a special place in my heart. I love this community and I look forward to meeting each of you one day. Thank you for your prayers for our family. The Lord is good. Bye-bye.

Hi you guys this is Chris calling from Canada and I just wanted to take a minute to pray for those affected with the North Carolina and the Florence hurricane and that Lord You would just keep those people safe there and that Lord You would just keep Your hand and Your love upon all of them. So, hope those who are affected are safe and we hear about your stories on the DAB. Thanks. God bless.

Hey, this is Janet from Georgia, hopefully soon to be Alabama. Today is 14th September. I can’t believe I’m actually calling but I wanted to reach out to Candice from Oregon regarding her son Micah. I absolutely love the way that you worded the prayer for your son to come to God and I need to write it down and start praying that for my son. He also struggles with addiction and with doubts about God. But anyway, I just really love the way you worded that and I pray for your son and his court date. And yes, I love this podcast and I love this group. It’s the safest group that I know of where I can share myself and I think Brian and Jill get a lot of the credit for that. Thanks everybody. Bye-bye.

The Daily Audio Bible Reading for Monday September 17, 2018 (NIV)

Isaiah 25:1-28:13

Salvation and Judgment on That Day

25 Lord, you are my God;(A)
I will exalt you. I will praise your name,
for you have accomplished wonders,
plans formed long ago, with perfect faithfulness.
For you have turned the city into a pile of rocks,(B)
a fortified city, into ruins;
the fortress of barbarians(C) is no longer a city;
it will never be rebuilt.
Therefore, a strong people will honor you.
The cities of violent nations will fear you.
For you have been a stronghold for the poor person,
a stronghold for the needy(D) in his distress,
a refuge from storms and a shade from heat.(E)
When the breath of the violent
is like a storm against a wall,
like heat in a dry land,
you will subdue the uproar of barbarians.
As the shade of a cloud cools the heat of the day,
so he will silence the song of the violent.

On this mountain,[a](F)
the Lord of Armies will prepare for all the peoples a feast of choice meat,(G)
a feast with aged wine, prime cuts of choice meat,[b] fine vintage wine.
On this mountain
he will destroy the burial shroud,
the shroud over all the peoples,
the sheet covering all the nations;(H)
he will destroy death forever.(I)
The Lord God will wipe away the tears
from every face(J)
and remove his people’s disgrace(K)
from the whole earth,
for the Lord has spoken.

On that day it will be said,
“Look, this is our God;
we have waited for him, and he has saved us.
This is the Lord; we have waited for him.
Let us rejoice and be glad in his salvation.”(L)
10 For the Lord’s power will rest on this mountain.
But Moab(M) will be trampled in his place[c]
as straw is trampled in a dung pile.

11 He will spread out his arms in the middle of it,
as a swimmer spreads out his arms to swim.
His pride will be brought low,
along with the trickery of his hands.(N)
12 The high-walled fortress will be brought down,
thrown to the ground, to the dust.(O)

The Song of Judah

26 On that day this song will be sung in the land of Judah:

We have a strong city.
Salvation is established as walls and ramparts.(P)
Open the gates
so a righteous nation can come in—
one that remains faithful.
You will keep the mind that is dependent on you
in perfect peace,(Q)
for it is trusting in you.
Trust in the Lord forever,
because in the Lord, the Lord himself, is an everlasting rock!(R)
For he has humbled those who live in lofty places—
an inaccessible city.(S)
He brings it down; he brings it down to the ground;
he throws it to the dust.
Feet trample it,
the feet of the humble,
the steps of the poor.

God’s People Vindicated

The path of the righteous is level;(T)
you clear a straight path for the righteous.
Yes, Lord, we wait for you
in the path of your judgments.
Our desire is for your name and renown.(U)
I long for you in the night;(V)
yes, my spirit within me diligently seeks you,
for when your judgments are in the land,
the inhabitants of the world will learn righteousness.
10 But if the wicked man is shown favor,
he does not learn righteousness.
In a righteous land he acts unjustly
and does not see the majesty of the Lord.
11 Lord, your hand is lifted up to take action,
but they do not see it.
Let them see your zeal for your people
and be put to shame.
Let fire consume your adversaries.
12 Lord, you will establish peace for us,
for you have also done all our work for us.
13 Lord our God, lords other than you have owned[d] us,
but we remember your name alone.(W)

14 The dead do not live;
departed spirits do not rise up.
Indeed, you have punished and destroyed them;
you have wiped out all memory of them.(X)
15 You have added to the nation, Lord.(Y)
You have added to the nation; you are honored.
You have expanded all the borders of the land.(Z)
16 Lord, they went to you in their distress;(AA)
they poured out whispered prayers
because your discipline fell on them.[e]
17 As a pregnant woman about to give birth
writhes and cries out in her pains,(AB)
so we were before you, Lord.
18 We became pregnant, we writhed in pain;
we gave birth to wind.
We have won no victories on earth,
and the earth’s inhabitants have not fallen.

19 Your dead will live; their bodies[f] will rise.(AC)
Awake and sing, you who dwell in the dust!
For you will be covered with the morning dew,[g]
and the earth will bring out the departed spirits.

20 Go, my people, enter your rooms
and close your doors behind you.
Hide for a little while until the wrath has passed.(AD)
21 For look, the Lord is coming from his place(AE)
to punish the inhabitants of the earth for their iniquity.(AF)
The earth will reveal the blood shed on it
and will no longer conceal her slain.

Leviathan Slain

27 On that day the Lord with his relentless, large, strong sword will bring judgment on Leviathan,(AG) the fleeing serpent—Leviathan, the twisting serpent. He will slay the monster that is in the sea.(AH)

The Lord’s Vineyard

On that day
sing about a desirable vineyard:(AI)
I am the Lord, who watches over it
to water it regularly.
So that no one disturbs it,
I watch over it night and day.
I am not angry.
If only there were thorns and briers(AJ) for me to battle,
I would trample them
and burn them to the ground.
Or let it take hold of my strength;
let it make peace with me—
make peace with me.
In days to come, Jacob will take root.(AK)
Israel will blossom and bloom(AL)
and fill the whole world with fruit.

Did the Lord strike Israel
as he struck the one who struck Israel?(AM)
Was Israel killed like those killed by the Lord?
You disputed with Israel
by banishing and driving her away.[h]
He removed her with his severe storm
on the day of the east wind.
Therefore Jacob’s iniquity(AN) will be atoned for in this way,
and the result of the removal of his sin will be this:(AO)
when he makes all the altar stones
like crushed bits of chalk,
no Asherah poles or incense altars will remain standing.
10 For the fortified city will be desolate,
pastures deserted and abandoned like a wilderness.
Calves will graze there,
and there they will spread out and strip its branches.
11 When its branches dry out, they will be broken off.
Women will come and make fires with them,
for they are not a people with understanding.(AP)
Therefore their Maker(AQ) will not have compassion on them,
and their Creator will not be gracious to them.

12 On that day(AR)
the Lord will thresh grain from the Euphrates River
as far as the Wadi of Egypt,(AS)
and you Israelites will be gathered one by one.
13 On that day
a great trumpet(AT) will be blown,
and those lost in the land of Assyria will come,
as well as those dispersed in the land of Egypt;
and they will worship the Lord
at Jerusalem on the holy mountain.

Woe to Samaria

28 Woe to the majestic crown of Ephraim’s drunkards,(AU)
and to the fading flower of its beautiful splendor,
which is on the summit above the rich valley.
Woe to those overcome with wine.
Look, the Lord has a strong and mighty one(AV)
like a devastating hail storm,
like a storm with strong flooding water.
He will bring it across the land with his hand.
The majestic crown of Ephraim’s drunkards
will be trampled underfoot.
The fading flower of his beautiful splendor,
which is on the summit above the rich valley,
will be like a ripe fig before the summer harvest.(AW)
Whoever sees it will swallow it
while it is still in his hand.
On that day
the Lord of Armies will become a crown of beauty
and a diadem of splendor(AX)
to the remnant of his people,
a spirit of justice
to the one who sits in judgment,(AY)
and strength
to those who repel attacks at the city gate.

Even these stagger because of wine
and stumble under the influence of beer:
priest and prophet stagger because of beer,
they are confused by wine.(AZ)
They stumble because of beer,
they are muddled in their visions,
they stumble in their judgments.
Indeed, all their tables are covered with vomit;
there is no place without a stench.
Who is he trying to teach?
Who is he trying to instruct?
Infants[i] just weaned from milk?
Babies[j] removed from the breast?
10 “Law after law, law after law,
line after line, line after line,
a little here, a little there.”[k]
11 For he will speak to this people
with stammering speech
and in a foreign language.(BA)
12 He had said to them:
“This is the place of rest;
let the weary rest;(BB)
this is the place of repose.”
But they would not listen.

13 The word of the Lord will come to them:
“Law after law, law after law,
line after line, line after line,
a little here, a little there,”
so they go stumbling backward,
to be broken, trapped, and captured.(BC)

Galatians 3:10-22

Law and Promise

10 For all who rely on the works of the law are under a curse,(A) because it is written,(B) Everyone who does not do everything written in the book of the law is cursed.[a](C) 11 Now it is clear that no one is justified before God by the law, because the righteous will live(D) by faith.[b](E) 12 But the law is not based on faith; instead, the one who does these things will live by them.[c](F) 13 Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us,(G) because it is written, Cursed is everyone who is hung on a tree.[d](H) 14 The purpose was that the blessing of Abraham would come to the Gentiles by Christ Jesus, so that we could receive the promised Spirit through faith.(I)

15 Brothers and sisters, I’m using a human illustration. No one sets aside or makes additions to a validated human will.[e] 16 Now the promises were spoken to Abraham and to his seed. He does not say “and to seeds,” as though referring to many, but referring to one, and to your seed,[f](J) who is Christ. 17 My point is this: The law, which came 430 years later,(K) does not invalidate a covenant previously established by God[g] and thus cancel the promise. 18 For if the inheritance is based on the law, it is no longer based on the promise; but God has graciously given it to Abraham through the promise.

The Purpose of the Law

19 Why then was the law given?(L) It was added for the sake of transgressions[h] until the Seed to whom the promise was made would come. The law was put into effect through angels(M) by means of a mediator.(N) 20 Now a mediator is not just for one person alone, but God is one.(O) 21 Is the law therefore contrary to God’s promises? Absolutely not! For if the law had been granted with the ability to give life, then righteousness would certainly be on the basis of the law. 22 But the Scripture imprisoned everything under sin’s power,[i](P) so that the promise might be given on the basis of faith(Q) in Jesus Christ to those who believe.(R)

Isaiah 22:1-24:23, Galatians 2:17-3:9 , Psalms 60:1-12 , Proverbs 23:15-16

Today is the 16th day of September. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I’m Brian and it is a pleasure to be here with you and we’re turning the knob, as it were, together and opening the door and walking into a brand-new week together. So, I’m excited that we can step into this new week together and enjoy the journey as we move forward into the Scriptures and into our lives. We’ll read from the Christian Standard Bible this week. Of course, we’re picking up where we left off, Isaiah chapter 22 verse 1 through 24 verse 23 today.

Prayer:

Father, we thank you for this new week to walk into, moving ourselves into the back half of another month. And as we so often say, we come to these moments and we come to them on purpose, and we mention them on purpose because they allow us to look back over the last week, over the last month, and since the beginning of the year, and into our past. You have been faithful. You have brought us here. And, so, we are assured you will lead us forward and we are grateful for that and we are grateful for the gift of your word because it is so important in that guidance. So, come Holy Spirit, plant your word in our lives we pray. In Jesus’ name we ask. Amen.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Yes. Good morning Daily Audio Bible community. This is Diane Olive Brown calling from Newburgh Indiana on September 13th, I believe…the 12th…September 12th, 2018. Shalom, shalom, nothing is missing and nothing is broken. I finally got made up, not with everything but with the prayer…the readings. I’m gonna have to go back and catch up on the community prayers but I got all caught up and I’m up to date to read the Daily Audio Bible. And because I had to read so many in a day, five or six each day just to catch up, the word was really speaking to me in Job and in the following. Now realize that when I was…I’m a lot like Job, thinking that I’m all righteous and everything is fine, not listening to what this Lord is trying to tell me. So…so in the end there when God finally spoke, he listened to those guys for many chapters and in the very end of Job he says, I have something to say. Job said, I put my hand over my mouth and I’m sorry. So, one thing I really got and I want to rejoice about is the understanding of repentance and that it’s so important to come low before the Lord and to come to him in a contrite heart no matter how right you think you are with Him to take time to listen to Him to tell you what you’re doing wrong and repent and then pray for all those…

Hey DAB family. I am new to the podcast. My name is Mariana from Atlanta Georgia. I wanted to know if you all’d keep me in prayer. I’ve been doing __ but it seems like the worst and the temptation just keep coming. Could you guys pray, pray that I have clarity and understanding and __ sees it and that I would just say yes to whatever it is that God wants me to do and that I would just __ totally __. And can you also pray for my sister Natasha. She is __ but she also is __ addiction. Thank you so much DAB family. God bless.

Hello my amazing friends and my family in Christ. This is Candace from Oregon. I just listened to the September 13 broadcast and it was just, again, once again filled with encouragement and very specific encouragement to the anguish and difficulties that I am in right now. My son is definitely in crisis and since he’s 35 years old I might not have been updated yet because I’ve been praying so faithfully for him and believing God that he might be in really good shape by now and not have told me yet. It’s partly because it’s because its 2…I’ve been praying since 2 o’clock in the morning. It’s 4 o’clock in the morning now. This call is to thank you because, Brian, your reading that day, September 13, your commentary and then each person that called into pray, there was just one nugget after another of encouragement and wisdom and strength to bring into this chaos that I am involved with, to bring into it a sound mind of the Lord Jesus Christ. He is blessing me through you and I need to thank you. Thank you Brian and thank you everyone who called in. Lord, I thank you.

Hi this is Sonja calling from Tampa and I want to pray for my family. Lord I ask that You look upon my DAB family. Father, You know their petitions my savior and King and I know that Your mercies are new every day. I know that You are God and that there is nothing too difficult for You. There is absolutely nothing that You can’t do if we choose to trust You. I pray that today will be a day of revelation, a day of complete trust in You Lord so that we can be reassured that You are God Jehovah the great one, the Almighty one, the God of second chances and new opportunities. I declare that today we choose to trust You Lord. Today we stand on Your word and we choose You. No matter what we’re going through we choose to trust You. Maybe see Your glory prevail merciful and mighty God. Today we trust in our healing and our new jobs, trust You and our deliverance for our children and family, trust You in our finances. Today we choose to trust You in everything Lord. Father, I pray that we continue to trust You no matter what the circumstances are and I believe that we will see the windows of heaven open and we will see You move in our lives. Holy Spirit continue to help us in every area of our lives and teach us every day to trust You Lord. Lord, today we put on the full armor of God, the helmet of salvation, the breast plate of righteousness, the shield of faith, the sword of the spirit, the belt of truth, and the shoes for the preparation of the gospel of peace. I declare that we are mighty warriors in Christ and that no weapon formed against us shall prosper. Amen.

Isaiah 19:1-21:17, Galatians 2:1-16 , Psalms 59:1-17, Proverbs 23:13-14

Today is the 15th day of September. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I am Brian. It’s great to be here with you today. And we’re ending another week. I think this puts us directly in the middle of the month of September. So, we continue to move forward. And we’ve been reading from the New International Version all this week, which is what we’ll do today. And we’ll go back out into the book of Isaiah and read chapters 19-21 today.

Prayer:

Father, we thank You for another week in Your word. We thank You for bringing us through here to the center of another month. And as we contemplate the time we’ve spent together in Your word this year, we see the mighty work that You have done in our hearts and lives. The way that You subtly, and yet forcefully,  change the way we look at things as You change us from the inside out. And we’re grateful. We’re grateful for all of Your leading and all of Your guidance because You will only lead us into the truth. This is Your promise. So come, Holy Spirit.  Lead us into all truth, we pray. In Jesus name, we ask. Amen.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Hi, this is Ashley from Nottingham I’m a first time caller. I’m just asking for prayer from the community because for several years now I’ve had a keloid scar on my chest that’s been growing. And it’s really hard to treat. And every treatment I’ve tried hasn’t worked. Every time I just get much more insecure about how I look and I’ve just been praying for healing but I feel like God hasn’t answered. And I just want everyone to pray for increased faith to just plea that God can heal, if not through a miracle then just conventional medical care. But also just to not be affected by the work done at the __, to really know who Christ is. I am. I truly believe that regardless of anything that may happen that with y physical health. I thank you all for praying and for everything that you do. God bless.

Hi my name is Micah. I’m a first time caller. I don’t have…I don’t have a __ name right now I but I have been really enjoying the Daily Audio Bible since the beginning of this year and it’s been wonderful. My church actually encourages all of us to listen to it. So, you know, if there’s any redemption offers here, __. But…okay…the reason I’m calling…they told me in the little thing I should get to it pretty quickly. I am getting married in November, so about two months from now and I couldn’t be more excited or more terrified to be doing that. She’s an amazing woman and God has blessed me beyond belief to be able to marry her. But I recently confessed a struggle to her, a struggle that I’ve had for most, if not all of my life, with pornography. And…I don’t know where to be with this whole struggle. I don’t know how to fight it. So, I’m…I’m asking for prayer that God would just continue to lead me. I believe that He is leading me into a time of fasting in the 53 some odd days that I have left before I get married and I just don’t know what to fast from. I know obviously, porn. But I would love your prayers for God to reveal to me how I can best be focused on Him in this. And, yeah, I love hearing all your prayer requests. You’re an amazing group of people and I’m happy to be a part of this community. I love you all. Bye.

Yeah, this is David in South Carolina. There’s something really sad that… On the Daily Audio Bible in the Psalm 51, where David confesses to __ ask God to get created in him a clean heart. Also in the chronological it was Ezekiel 39 and 37 and part of that was where God was gonna to take the dried up bones in the valley and re-create life so that… Well it’s been…I’ve been wanting to tell you that’s awesome. And my son that I’ve been, he…he has managed to get into a 180 day rehab with the Salvation Army in Charlotte South Carolina. And that’s the day I took him up there and left him. And that’s kinda what I gave him when he went into rehab instead of really trying to do what I normally do, which is not very good. I just said son, __ I would __ that Psalm 51 is my confession and read the Bible verses about __ the dry bones as the promise and see what God can do for you. So, I just want to ask that we just lift up my son Tim to you guys for prayer, that’s the main thing. He’s gonna be there for six months. I mean I hope he doesn’t bail out. I don’t know where he is but he seems to be in a different place than where he’s been before when he was trying to play the system but that’s really between him and God. And I’m just asking for prayer. Thank you. And you guys are really doing a great job. Just keep up the good work. Thank you very much.

Good day everyone on the Daily Audio Bible app. This is Kurt calling from Massachusetts. Today is September 12th. I traveled yesterday by plane and obviously was moved by the remembrance of what happened September 11th. And I wanted to pray for all those affected, pray for our country, and also I want to pray for all of those who are in the path of the hurricane that’s about to hit the Carolinas. Probably by the time this is played you’ll be in the thick of it. So, I pray that you’ve had the opportunity to get out, find shelter, and that you’re home and will be saved and your lives will be saved and everything will be okay. Last, I want to pray for this ministry and to those of you that have made a donation and part of the daily audio Bible, of course, we all applaud you. For those who haven’t, I’d encourage you to consider it because I know I personally depend on the Daily Audio Bible, not every day but most days, to help me get through the week, persevere, and succeed. And that’s worth something. So, hopefully you’ll consider making a donation today. Thank you everyone. Have a great week. Be safe. Bye-bye.
