1 Chronicles 24:1-26:11

The Divisions of the Priests

24 The divisions of the descendants of Aaron were as follows: Aaron’s sons were Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar.(A) But Nadab and Abihu died before their father, and they had no sons, so Eleazar and Ithamar served as priests.(B) Together with Zadok(C) from the descendants of Eleazar and Ahimelech from the descendants of Ithamar, David divided them according to the assigned duties of their service. Since more leaders were found among Eleazar’s descendants than Ithamar’s, they were divided accordingly: sixteen heads of ancestral families[a] were from Eleazar’s descendants, and eight heads of ancestral families were from Ithamar’s. They(D) were assigned by lot, for there were officers of the sanctuary and officers of God among both Eleazar’s and Ithamar’s descendants.

The secretary, Shemaiah son of Nethanel, a Levite, recorded them in the presence of the king and the officers, the priest Zadok, Ahimelech(E) son of Abiathar, and the heads of families of the priests and the Levites. One ancestral family[b] was taken for Eleazar, and then one for Ithamar.

The first lot fell to Jehoiarib, the second to Jedaiah,

the third to Harim, the fourth to Seorim,

the fifth to Malchijah, the sixth to Mijamin,

10 the seventh to Hakkoz, the eighth to Abijah,(F)

11 the ninth to Jeshua, the tenth to Shecaniah,

12 the eleventh to Eliashib, the twelfth to Jakim,

13 the thirteenth to Huppah, the fourteenth to Jeshebeab,

14 the fifteenth to Bilgah, the sixteenth to Immer,

15 the seventeenth to Hezir, the eighteenth to Happizzez,

16 the nineteenth to Pethahiah, the twentieth to Jehezkel,

17 the twenty-first to Jachin, the twenty-second to Gamul,

18 the twenty-third to Delaiah, and the twenty-fourth to Maaziah.

19 These had their assigned duties for service when they entered the Lord’s temple, according to their regulations, which they received from their ancestor Aaron, as the Lord God of Israel had commanded him.

The Rest of the Levites

20 As for the rest of Levi’s sons:

from Amram’s sons: Shubael;

from Shubael’s sons: Jehdeiah.

21 From Rehabiah:

from Rehabiah’s sons: Isshiah was the first.

22 From the Izharites: Shelomoth;

from Shelomoth’s sons: Jahath.

23 Hebron’s[c](G) sons:

Jeriah the first, Amariah the second,

Jahaziel the third, and Jekameam the fourth.

24 From Uzziel’s sons: Micah;

from Micah’s sons: Shamir.

25 Micah’s brother: Isshiah;

from Isshiah’s sons: Zechariah.

26 Merari’s sons: Mahli and Mushi,

and from his sons, Jaaziah his son.[d]

27 Merari’s sons, by his son Jaaziah:[e]

Shoham, Zaccur, and Ibri.

28 From Mahli: Eleazar, who had no sons.

29 From Kish, from Kish’s sons: Jerahmeel.

30 Mushi’s sons: Mahli, Eder, and Jerimoth.

Those were the descendants of the Levites according to their ancestral families.[f] 31 They also cast lots the same way as their relatives the descendants of Aaron did in the presence of King David, Zadok, Ahimelech, and the heads of the families of the priests and Levites—the family heads and their younger brothers alike.(H)

The Levitical Musicians

25 David and the officers of the army also set apart some of the sons of Asaph, Heman,(I) and Jeduthun, who were to prophesy(J) accompanied by lyres, harps, and cymbals.(K) This is the list of the men who performed their service:

From Asaph’s sons:

Zaccur, Joseph, Nethaniah, and Asarelah, sons of Asaph, under Asaph’s authority, who prophesied under the authority of the king.

From Jeduthun:(L) Jeduthun’s sons:

Gedaliah, Zeri, Jeshaiah, Shimei,[g] Hashabiah, and Mattithiah—six—under the authority of their father Jeduthun, prophesying to the accompaniment of lyres, giving thanks and praise to the Lord.

From Heman: Heman’s sons:

Bukkiah, Mattaniah, Uzziel, Shebuel, Jerimoth, Hananiah, Hanani, Eliathah, Giddalti, Romamti-ezer, Joshbekashah, Mallothi, Hothir, and Mahazioth. All these sons of Heman, the king’s seer,(M) were given by the promises of God to exalt him,[h] for God had given Heman fourteen sons and three daughters.

All these men were under their own fathers’ authority for the music in the Lord’s temple, with cymbals, harps, and lyres for the service of God’s temple. Asaph, Jeduthun, and Heman were under the king’s authority. They numbered 288 together with their relatives who were all trained and skillful in music for the Lord. They cast lots for their duties, young and old alike, teacher as well as pupil.(N)

The first lot for Asaph fell to Joseph, his sons, and his relatives—12[i]
to Gedaliah the second: him, his relatives, and his sons—12
10 the third to Zaccur, his sons, and his relatives—12
11 the fourth to Izri,[j] his sons, and his relatives—12
12 the fifth to Nethaniah, his sons, and his relatives—12
13 the sixth to Bukkiah, his sons, and his relatives—12
14 the seventh to Jesarelah, his sons, and his relatives—12
15 the eighth to Jeshaiah, his sons, and his relatives—12
16 the ninth to Mattaniah, his sons, and his relatives—12
17 the tenth to Shimei, his sons, and his relatives—12
18 the eleventh to Azarel,[k] his sons, and his relatives—12
19 the twelfth to Hashabiah, his sons, and his relatives—12
20 the thirteenth to Shubael, his sons, and his relatives—12
21 the fourteenth to Mattithiah, his sons, and his relatives—12
22 the fifteenth to Jeremoth, his sons, and his relatives—12
23 the sixteenth to Hananiah, his sons, and his relatives—12
24 the seventeenth to Joshbekashah, his sons, and his relatives—12
25 the eighteenth to Hanani, his sons, and his relatives—12
26 the nineteenth to Mallothi, his sons, and his relatives—12
27 the twentieth to Eliathah, his sons, and his relatives—12
28 the twenty-first to Hothir, his sons, and his relatives—12
29 the twenty-second to Giddalti, his sons, and his relatives—12
30 the twenty-third to Mahazioth, his sons, and his relatives—12
31 and the twenty-fourth to Romamti-ezer, his sons, and his relatives—12.

The Levitical Gatekeepers

26 The following were the divisions of the gatekeepers:

From the Korahites: Meshelemiah son of Kore, one of the sons of Asaph.

Meshelemiah had sons:

Zechariah the firstborn, Jediael the second,

Zebadiah the third, Jathniel the fourth,

Elam the fifth, Jehohanan the sixth,

and Eliehoenai the seventh.

Obed-edom also had sons:

Shemaiah the firstborn, Jehozabad the second,

Joah the third, Sachar the fourth,

Nethanel the fifth, Ammiel the sixth,

Issachar the seventh, and Peullethai the eighth,

for God blessed him.

Also, to his son Shemaiah were born sons who ruled their ancestral families[l] because they were strong, capable men.

Shemaiah’s sons: Othni, Rephael, Obed, and Elzabad; his relatives Elihu and Semachiah were also capable men. All of these were among the sons of Obed-edom with their sons and relatives; they were capable men with strength for the work—sixty-two from Obed-edom.

Meshelemiah also had sons and relatives who were capable men—eighteen.

10 Hosah,(O) from the Merarites, also had sons: Shimri the first (although he was not the firstborn, his father had appointed him as the first), 11 Hilkiah the second, Tebaliah the third, and Zechariah the fourth. The sons and relatives of Hosah were thirteen in all.

Romans 4:1-12

Abraham Justified by Faith

What then will we say that Abraham, our forefather(A) according to the flesh, has found?[a] If Abraham was justified[b] by works,(B) he has something to boast about—but not before God. For what does the Scripture say? Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him for righteousness.[c](C) Now to the one who works,(D) pay is not credited as a gift, but as something owed. But to the one who does not work, but believes on him who declares the ungodly to be righteous,(E) his faith is credited for righteousness.

David Celebrating the Same Truth

Just as David also speaks of the blessing of the person to whom God credits righteousness apart from works:

Blessed are those whose lawless acts are forgiven
and whose sins are covered.
Blessed is the person
the Lord will never charge with sin.[d](F)

Abraham Justified before Circumcision

Is this blessing only for the circumcised,(G) then? Or is it also for the uncircumcised? For we say, Faith was credited to Abraham for righteousness.[e](H) 10 In what way then was it credited—while he was circumcised, or uncircumcised? It was not while he was circumcised, but uncircumcised. 11 And he received the sign of circumcision(I) as a seal of the righteousness that he had by faith[f](J) while still uncircumcised. This was to make him the father(K) of all who believe(L) but are not circumcised, so that righteousness may be credited to them also. 12 And he became the father of the circumcised, who are not only circumcised but who also follow in the footsteps of the faith our father Abraham had while he was still uncircumcised.

Psalm 13

A Plea for Deliverance

For the choir director. A psalm of David.

How long, Lord? Will you forget me forever?
How long will you hide your face from me?(A)
How long will I store up anxious concerns[a] within me,
agony in my mind every day?
How long will my enemy dominate me?(B)

Consider me and answer, Lord my God.
Restore brightness to my eyes;(C)
otherwise, I will sleep in death.
My enemy will say, “I have triumphed over him,”
and my foes will rejoice because I am shaken.(D)

But I have trusted in your faithful love;(E)
my heart will rejoice in your deliverance.(F)
I will sing to the Lord
because he has treated me generously.(G)

1 Chronicles 22:1-23:32, Romans 3:9-31 , Psalms 12:1-8, Proverbs 19:13-14

Today is the 16th day of July. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I’m Brian. It’s great to be here with you today. And I know I say that most every day, but we all need somebody who thinks it’s great to see us, right? And it’s great to see you. It’s good to be together around the global campfire as we take the next step forward, which will take us back into the book of 1 Chronicles and back into the life of King David. We’re reading from the Christian Standard Bible this week. 1 Chronicles 22 and 23.

Commentary:

Okay. So now that we are in Paul’s letters, and as I’ve said, we’ll kind of be camping out in Paul’s letters for a little while. And in spending time in those letters, we’ll understand exactly what it was that Paul was teaching. And what we’ll find is that it is the core of the Christian faith. So for example, in our reading from today, Paul took us right to the bedrock of the faith that in the essence of it all. And that was simply this - no one is perfect. And we all know that. But then the problem comes in that we are trying to be in a relationship with a perfect, righteous, holy God. So how do we get beyond our inability to become perfect as we pursue this relationship with perfection? So as we’ve been working our way through the Old Testament, we see that the law of Moses was given and the Hebrew people believed that if they could obey the law fully, that if they could do it with all of their heart, wholly and unimpeded, then they could become righteous before God. The problem was that no one could do it. So Paul’s point that he was making was that the law was to reveal sin and to reveal that no one could become perfect and righteous on their own. So in Paul’s own words from our reading today, “Now we know that whatever the law says, it speaks to those who are subject to the law so that every mouth may be shut and the whole world may become subject to God’s judgement. For no one will be justified in his sight by the works of the law because the knowledge of sin comes through the law.” So for Paul as a religious Jew who was a Pharisee, devoutly trying to obey to the letter of the law everything in the law as best as he could, he realized even when you apply yourself completely, you’re still gonna fail. So on the one hand, that’s kind of a hopeless situation. Everything you are trying to apply yourself to do to become righteous before God is, in the end, not going to succeed. So what can a person do? How is the unachievable achieved? As Paul began to look at Jesus, he began to see how this could work. And I’m quoting him from our reading. “But now apart from the law, the righteousness of God has been revealed, attested by the law and the prophets. The righteousness of God is through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe, since there is no distinction. For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. They are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus.” That is an essential bedrock core truth of the Christian faith. And thank goodness. Because we’re not in a hopeless situation. We can never make ourselves righteous before God. It was a hopeless situation. We would never be able to get there, would never be able to come into God’s presence and say, I deserve to be in your presence because I have made myself righteous like you are, right? That’s not going to happen. So hopeless situation. But as we look at what Paul is saying hope comes springing forth. Yes, all have sinned. All have fallen short of the glory of God. But God, in his grace, freely makes us right in his sight and he did this through Jesus when he freed us from the penalty of our sins. Which means that we are made righteous, that we are perfected before God because of his grace. So we can’t go into God’s presence and say, I deserve to be here because I am righteous and I have made myself righteous, but we can go into God’s presence boldly as our Father and say, I deserve to be here because you’ve accepted me through Jesus. I haven’t earned this. I in myself don’t deserve this. But you came for me. This is the good news of the gospel. And may we rejoice in it today.

Prayer:

Father, we do. We certainly do today and every day. Because there will never be a day that we have achieved righteousness on our own and deserve to be in Your presence. And yet You welcome us into Your presence every day because of Jesus. And so we’re thankful. Jesus, we thank You. We were hopelessly lost and You rescued us and we didn’t deserve it. And we still fall short and You still are merciful. So we are grateful today. We invite Your Holy Spirit to lead us to be grateful and to concentrate and contemplate and meditate upon the grand good news that You have offered to the world. We ask, Father, that You would help us share the good news. All are welcome. Come Holy Spirit we pray. In Jesus name. Amen.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Hello my beautiful DAB family. This is Tulu calling from Canada. I haven’t called since 2014. So, this is a big step for me. I’ve been a listener since 2007. Just want to thank you all. I love you guys so much. I listen to your calls and all your prayers, prayer requests, praise re-ports, and advice - really bless me. I just had to call today when I heard Jeff from Syracuse call. I’m so sorry about your loss Jeff. This is why we are here and I just pray that the Lord will hold you that this time and comfort you. And for everyone else who’s mourning a loss at this time, I pray the same prayer for you, that that hole, that void that has been left by your loved one, the Lord is the only one who can fill it and I pray that you just feel His comfort and His love and feel His warm embrace and hear him speak His words of comfort, His words that are the word for this season of your life. And I pray that you would just know His comfort and blessing. Family, I know that these are perilous times and this DAB community isn’t a coincidence and it’s not a mistake. And God has brought us all together for such a time as this we are so much is happening in the world and sometimes it’s like some things are being called home. And those of us who are here have a mission to carry the name of Jesus and to be His hands and feet and spread His love. And I pray that the Lord will just give us the grace and the courage and the strength to do that. I love you guys. I will call another day. I hope, soon. Giving you big hugs and kisses. Love to everyone. Thanks Brian, Jill, thanks Sarah Jane. Thanks all the team. Love you all. God bless

Hi family this is Kim from Eastern Kentucky and it’s Thursday, July 12th and I was just calling in because Standing Firm had called in and saying he hadn’t been standing firm. And a Scripture came to me when you started talking, and it’s Proverbs 24:16, for a righteous man falls seven times and rises again. And, the only way we stand firm is in the strength of our Savior. And James tells us that when we confess our sins, our faults, where we missed the mark, we confess them one to another and then the Lord hears our prayers and we get healed. And, so, Standing Firm, I appreciate you calling in and I know you’re still a righteous man and you are going to rise again, that’s what you’ve done. And you ask about people with depression and loneliness, praying for them. And my son is 20 years old and he struggles with that and his name is Josiah and I ask that you would remember him. And Jeff called in saying he had lost his wife, 55 years old. I’m 56, Jeff. I lost my husband 20 years ago to a brain tumor and it was rough in the beginning, very rough. But God is faithful and I know He will be faithful to you as well. So, prayers for everyone, I love you all, I love the podcast Brian and Jill. God bless you. Listening always. Bye.

Hi this is Victoria Soldier calling to pray for Stanley. He’s the young man from Greenville South Carolina. And I just want to pray for you that whatever the challenges that God will provide. God is able to do exceedingly my brother. You continue to be strong in Him and let Him give you the joy of your heart in the name of Jesus. I want to also pray for the brother, he says that his brother’s wife is having some mental problems so they need to get the daughters. I want to pray for them. And I also want to pray for the baby who has water on the head. And I want to pray for him to live and not die. And I also want to pray for Jeff and that he said his wife died at 55. That’s a horrible thing and that you wanted to be with your wife. And God has an answer for you. We don’t know what it is. But we know that it’s always good. Lord, in the name of Jesus, You touch these people Lord. You know everything about them. You know the hairs on the head. Oh Lord You are a God that can do anything but fail. Lord You help them to understand. You bless them, fill eel that spot in their heart, in their mind, in their lives. You heal that body Lord. You heal that baby Lord. You direct Lord. You keep them Lord and You work there miracles Father in the name of Jesus. You Have Your Way, Lord. You are a present help in the time of trouble. You never leave them nor forsake them. Lord continue to bless, continue to bless Your people. They’re going through loneliness, their going through depression. Lord, bless them to find each other __that would love them, that they would love, that they can __…

Hi DAB family. This is nobody gets left behind in Colorado. I don’t call…I probably have only called maybe four times in the eight years that I’ve listened but I did want to make that a goal, something I start doing more and I just felt God pressing on my heart today to call in and just tell you all about a little story about something that happened yesterday. So, I have a brother Jeremy and he’s been in prison for 16 years. And he’s gotten more like a father to me and a brother and a best friend. And he’s just, these last, probably three years, he’s been getting stronger in his faith. And I love to just bounce Bible scriptures and we could talk for hours about the DAB and what we’re listening to and what God is doing in our lives and stuff like that. Anyway, I hadn’t heard from him in a couple weeks and I was really worried about him. The systems are down for the messaging in the prison that he is at and everything. So, I was really just praying every single day. I got a call from him yesterday. My brother had a breakthrough. My sister who has dropped contact with him for a long time, she sent him a quick little note and said I love you brother. And my brother, it just did something amazing to him. And he asked me to find this song and it’s called “your love defends me” __ . And, so, I played it on my husband’s phone so he could hear it on my phone and he let the song play through it I just had, I was just envisioning him on the other end crying and just worshiping God and if you knew my brother you would understand how powerful this is. He’s a shot caller, he’s a gangster like…

The Daily Audio Bible Reading for Monday July 16, 2018 (NIV)

1 Chronicles 22-23

22 Then David said, “This is the house of the Lord God, and this is the altar of burnt offering for Israel.”(A)

David’s Preparations for the Temple

So David gave orders to gather the resident aliens that were in the land of Israel,(B) and he appointed stonecutters to cut finished stones for building God’s house.(C) David supplied a great deal of iron to make the nails for the doors of the gates and for the fittings, together with an immeasurable quantity of bronze,(D) and innumerable cedar logs because the Sidonians and Tyrians had brought a large quantity of cedar logs to David.(E) David said, “My son Solomon is young and inexperienced, and the house that is to be built for the Lord must be exceedingly great and famous and glorious in all the lands.(F) Therefore, I will make provision for it.” So David made lavish preparations for it before his death.

Then he summoned his son Solomon and charged him to build a house for the Lord God of Israel. “My son,” David said to Solomon, “It was in my heart to build a house for the name of the Lord my God,(G) but the word of the Lord came to me: ‘You have shed much blood and waged great wars. You are not to build a house for my name because you have shed so much blood on the ground before me.(H) But a son will be born to you; he will be a man of rest. I will give him rest from all his surrounding enemies,(I) for his name will be Solomon,[a](J) and I will give peace and quiet to Israel during his reign.(K) 10 He is the one who will build a house for my name. He will be my son, and I will be his father. I will establish the throne of his kingdom over Israel forever.’(L)

11 “Now, my son, may the Lord be with you,(M) and may you succeed in building the house of the Lord your God, as he said about you. 12 Above all, may the Lord give you insight and understanding when he puts you in charge of Israel so that you may keep the law of the Lord your God.(N) 13 Then you will succeed if you carefully follow the statutes and ordinances the Lord commanded Moses for Israel.(O) Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid or discouraged.(P)

14 “Notice I have taken great pains to provide for the house of the Lord—3,775 tons of gold, 37,750 tons of silver,[b](Q) and bronze and iron that can’t be weighed because there is so much of it. I have also provided timber and stone, but you will need to add more to them. 15 You also have many workers: stonecutters, masons, carpenters, and people skilled in every kind of work 16 in gold, silver, bronze, and iron—beyond number. Now begin the work, and may the Lord be with you.”(R)

17 Then David ordered all the leaders of Israel to help his son Solomon: 18 “The Lord your God is with you, isn’t he? And hasn’t he given you rest on every side?(S) For he has handed the land’s inhabitants over to me, and the land has been subdued before the Lord and his people. 19 Now determine in your mind and heart to seek the Lord your God.(T) Get started building the Lord God’s sanctuary so that you may bring the ark of the Lord’s covenant and the holy articles of God to the temple that is to be built(U) for the name of the Lord.”(V)

The Divisions of the Levites

23 When David was old and full of days,(W) he installed his son Solomon as king over Israel.(X) Then he gathered all the leaders of Israel, the priests, and the Levites. The Levites thirty years old or more were counted;(Y) the total number of men was thirty-eight thousand by headcount.(Z) “Of these,” David said, “twenty-four thousand are to be in charge of the work on the Lord’s temple,(AA) six thousand are to be officers and judges,(AB) four thousand are to be gatekeepers, and four thousand are to praise the Lord with the instruments that I have made for worship.”(AC)

Then David divided them into divisions according to Levi’s sons:(AD) Gershom,[c] Kohath, and Merari.

The Gershonites: Ladan and Shimei.

Ladan’s sons: Jehiel was the first, then Zetham, and Joel—three.

Shimei’s sons: Shelomoth, Haziel, and Haran—three. Those were the heads of the families of Ladan.

10 Shimei’s sons: Jahath, Zizah,[d] Jeush, and Beriah. Those were Shimei’s sons—four. 11 Jahath was the first and Zizah was the second; however, Jeush and Beriah did not have many sons, so they became one family[e] and received a single assignment.

12 Kohath’s sons: Amram, Izhar, Hebron, and Uzziel—four.

13 Amram’s sons:(AE) Aaron and Moses.

Aaron, along with his descendants,(AF) was set apart forever to consecrate the most holy things, to burn incense in the presence of the Lord,(AG) to minister to him, and to pronounce blessings in his name forever. 14 As for Moses the man of God,(AH) his sons were named among the tribe of Levi.

15 Moses’s sons: Gershom and Eliezer.

16 Gershom’s sons: Shebuel was first.

17 Eliezer’s sons were Rehabiah, first; Eliezer did not have any other sons, but Rehabiah’s sons were very numerous.

Romans 3:9-31

The Whole World Guilty before God

What then? Are we any better off?[a] Not at all! For we have already charged that both Jews(A) and Gentiles[b](B) are all under sin,[c](C) 10 as it is written:

There is no one righteous, not even one.
11 There is no one who understands;
there is no one who seeks God.
12 All have turned away;
all alike have become worthless.
There is no one who does what is good,
not even one.[d](D)
13 Their throat is an open grave;
they deceive with their tongues.[e](E)
Vipers’ venom is under their lips.[f](F)
14 Their mouth is full of cursing and bitterness.[g](G)
15 Their feet are swift to shed blood;
16 ruin and wretchedness are in their paths,
17 and the path of peace they have not known.[h](H)
18 There is no fear of God before their eyes.[i](I)

19 Now we know that whatever the law says,(J) it speaks to those who are subject to the law,[j](K) so that every mouth may be shut and the whole world may become subject to God’s judgment.[k](L) 20 For no one will be justified[l] in his sight by the works of the law,(M) because the knowledge of sin comes through the law.(N)

The Righteousness of God through Faith

21 But now, apart from the law, the righteousness of God has been revealed,(O) attested by the Law and the Prophets.[m](P) 22 The righteousness of God is through faith(Q) in Jesus Christ[n](R) to all who believe,(S) since there is no distinction.(T) 23 For all have sinned(U) and fall short of the[o] glory of God. 24 They are justified freely by his grace(V) through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus.(W) 25 God presented him as an atoning sacrifice[p](X) in his blood,(Y) received through faith, to demonstrate his righteousness, because in his restraint God(Z) passed over the sins previously committed.(AA) 26 God presented him to demonstrate his righteousness at the present time, so that he would be righteous and declare righteous[q] the one who has faith in Jesus.

Boasting Excluded

27 Where, then, is boasting?(AB) It is excluded. By what kind of law?[r](AC) By one of works? No, on the contrary, by a law[s] of faith. 28 For we conclude that a person is justified by faith apart from the works of the law.(AD) 29 Or is God the God of Jews only?(AE) Is he not the God of Gentiles too? Yes, of Gentiles too, 30 since there is one God(AF) who will justify the circumcised by faith(AG) and the uncircumcised through faith. 31 Do we then nullify the law through faith? Absolutely not!(AH) On the contrary, we uphold the law.(AI)

Oppression by the Wicked

For the choir director: according to Sheminith.(A) A psalm of David.

Help, Lord, for no faithful one remains;
the loyal have disappeared from the human race.[a](B)
They lie to one another;
they speak with flattering lips and deceptive hearts.(C)
May the Lord cut off all flattering lips
and the tongue that speaks boastfully.(D)
They say, “Through our tongues we have power;
our lips are our own—who can be our master?”(E)

“Because of the devastation of the needy
and the groaning of the poor,
I will now rise up,” says the Lord.
“I will provide safety for the one who longs for it.”(F)

So, let’s dive in, pick up where we left off yesterday. 1 Chronicles chapter 19:20 and 21 today.

Prayer:

Father, we thank You for Your word and we are excited and anticipating all that You will speak to us in this new week as we continue to take the steps forward that lead us through the Scriptures. We need Your Holy Spirit to lead us into all truth as we continue forward every day. we need Your Holy Spirit’s comfort and guidance to navigate life. And, so, Father we worship You, and we invite Your Holy Spirit to come into this week and lead us forward. We ask in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Hey DABber’s this is Slave of Jesus from North Carolina. All right, so Holy Spirit let’s roll. So, here I am halfway around the world and I’m asking God, okay, what am I doing here? What am I doing here for you? I know what doing here for my country but today I am walking home after a 13 hour day and I see someone like dragging a whole bunch of packages along in a kids cart and, I’m kinda hey, can I help you with that? And I find out he’s walking to the post office. Now, the post office is like a mile away through a bunch of different stuff. And I’m like, oh, I’ll help you get through that. And I’m like oh I’m cutting through this area that’s where I was actually going. So, I get to the other end and there’s usually cabs out there. It’s an American. And I say, you know what, I feel that I am supposed to pay for you to take a taxi for the rest of the way. And they’re like no, no, no, no, no. But as soon as I come around the corner, there’s no taxis there. And they’re always there. So, I’m like okay God I guess you’ve got another plan. So, I said, well, I’m gonna help you get over the bridge. And, you know, they were kind of saying no, no, no. And this is the way, when the Holy Spirit tells us to do something you just do it. So, he was like, oh, so you’re a Christian. And I said well yeah __ I’m a Christian. Oh what made you change? So we started the conversation and walked in the 95° hot. That’s how it is over there. But they were telling me about their marital problems. And how they’d kind of gotten away from God. And just recently had gotten back in and started doing devotionals and stuff. And I was able to kinda let them talk a little and again __ __ give them a Daily Audio Bible thing. And I told them that would…is how I really got __ with them and even gave them a __. Call this prayer line and get tens of thousands of Christians around the world praying for you. So, __ . __ connected back to God because, you know, a lot of times having family that are very religious can be a downfall. So, love you all. I hope y’all have a great day.

Good morning DABber family. This is Walta, The Burning Bush that will not be Devoured for the Glory of Our God and King. I want to praise God for another year. Celebrated my birthday yesterday or the day before. I forget what day it is. Anyway, I miss you guys. I was just listening to the request today. I am reminded of how important it is to listen to the prayer requests. I confess, this year has been off. It’s been an off year for me. I’ve been listening to the readings and then just before I listen to the requests I’m like at work or I switch over to something else. So, I have been listening to it but how hopeful my heart feels just listening to the voices. I feel like the prayer request line is a huge lifeline. It’s a huge part of this family and I believe I’m probably preaching to the choir if you’re listening to this. But I just also want to encourage you all to please continue to call in. Because you just never know, there’s somebody out there who is looking forward to hearing your voice. You are an inspiration to somebody and you just never know until you stop calling and then we miss you. I love you all. Pastor Gene, love you so much. And Viola, I’m thinking about you too today. I love you all. God bless. Bye.

Hello Daily Audio Bible community family. This is Keisha just calling completely overwhelmed with the love, kindness, and prayer requests that everyone spoke for me. I just wanted to say I love you all and thank you so very much. I’m a couple weeks behind on my Daily Audio Bible podcasts so I’m just now hearing the outpour of response and I am so grateful and I am so humbled. Thank you so much. Thank you so much. God bless you all. Dan, I am praying for you. You said that you and your wife relocated and things did not work out the way you thought they would work out. I can totally, totally, totally relate to that. My husband and I, we went through the same thing last year. But trust God’s plan. Just because it did not work out the way you thought it would that doesn’t mean that that was not God’s will. You know, God has blessed my husband with a phenomenal job. So, just keep trusting him in the place that he called you to. And I’m praying with you and believing that it’s going to work out. And guys, I joined a local gym and a weight loss program. I’m not weighing myself. I’m just focusing on changing my habits. And I’m praying, I’m praying constantly, which is a new thing for me because God has blessed me in ways. And for some reason I thought I did need God to help me in this. I could take care of it. And he’s teaching me and humbling me that I have to seek him at all things.

Hello, good morning Daily Audio Bible. This is Kadian from Missisaugua calling with a praise report and an update. I’d like to thank everyone who prayed for me and my delivery. I had my son on July 5th, that was last week, a week ago. I am asking now for prayers for him. At week 37 in pregnancy my sons heart started skipping beats. Nobody could tell me why his heart was skipping beats. After birth they were hoping it would be gone. After birth it is still here. He’s seeing a pediatric cardiologist who ordered some tests and we have some further testing to do. Praise God, he is healthy. He is healthy apart from his heart skipping beats but you can just imagine that, even though he’s healthy, when his heart skipping beats it just feels like, okay, there’s something missing in the background that we don’t know. We’re asking you to continue to pray for us. He has another follow-up test next week, Friday. And that’s when they’re hoping that this should go away. And if it doesn’t then we are going to have to continue to do further testing. So, please, please pray for us. It’s somewhat of a get difficult time for us. And most definitely, I continue to pray for every single prayer request that comes in. I’m in the background listening. I find Daily Audio Bible to be my comfort during these times when I am home with our little one. So, thank you all so much and have a pleasant day.

1 Chronicles 19-21

War with the Ammonites

19 Some time later,(A) King Nahash of the Ammonites died, and his son became king in his place. Then David said, “I’ll show kindness to Hanun son of Nahash, because his father showed kindness to me.”

So David sent messengers to console him concerning his father. However, when David’s emissaries arrived in the land of the Ammonites to console him, the Ammonite leaders said to Hanun, “Just because David has sent men with condolences for you, do you really believe he’s showing respect for your father? Instead, haven’t his emissaries come in order to scout out, overthrow, and spy on the land?” So Hanun took David’s emissaries, shaved them, cut their clothes in half at the hips, and sent them away.(B)

It was reported to David about his men, so he sent messengers to meet them, since the men were deeply humiliated. The king said, “Stay in Jericho until your beards grow back; then return.”

When the Ammonites realized(C) they had made themselves repulsive to David, Hanun and the Ammonites sent thirty-eight tons[a] of silver to hire chariots and horsemen from Aram-naharaim, Aram-maacah, and Zobah.(D) They hired thirty-two thousand chariots and the king of Maacah with his army, who came and camped near Medeba.(E) The Ammonites also came together from their cities for the battle.

David heard about this and sent Joab and all the elite troops. The Ammonites marched out and lined up in battle formation at the entrance of the city while the kings who had come were in the field by themselves. 10 When Joab saw that there was a battle line in front of him and another behind him, he chose some of Israel’s finest young men[b](F) and lined up in formation to engage the Arameans. 11 He placed the rest of the forces under the command of his brother Abishai. They lined up in formation to engage the Ammonites.

12 “If the Arameans are too strong for me,” Joab said, “then you’ll be my help. However, if the Ammonites are too strong for you, I’ll help you. 13 Be strong! Let’s prove ourselves strong for our people and for the cities of our God.(G) May the Lord’s will be done.”[c]

14 Joab and the people with him approached the Arameans for battle, and they fled before him. 15 When the Ammonites saw that the Arameans had fled, they likewise fled before Joab’s brother Abishai and entered the city. Then Joab went to Jerusalem.

16 When the Arameans realized that they had been defeated by Israel, they sent messengers to summon the Arameans who were beyond the Euphrates River. They were led by Shophach, the commander of Hadadezer’s army.

17 When this was reported to David, he gathered all Israel and crossed the Jordan. He came up to the Arameans and lined up against them. When David lined up to engage them, they fought against him. 18 But the Arameans fled before Israel, and David killed seven thousand of their charioteers and forty thousand foot soldiers. He also killed Shophach, commander of the army. 19 When Hadadezer’s subjects saw that they had been defeated by Israel, they made peace with David and became his subjects. After this, the Arameans were never willing to help the Ammonites again.

Capture of the City of Rabbah

20 In the spring[d] when kings march out to war,(H) Joab led the army and destroyed the Ammonites’ land. He came to Rabbah and besieged it, but David remained in Jerusalem.(I) Joab attacked Rabbah and demolished it. Then David took the crown from the head of their king,[e][f](J) and it was placed on David’s head. He found that the crown weighed seventy-five pounds[g] of gold, and there was a precious stone in it. In addition, David took away a large quantity of plunder from the city. He brought out the people who were in it and put them to work with saws,[h] iron picks, and axes.[i](K) David did the same to all the Ammonite cities. Then he and all his troops returned to Jerusalem.

The Philistine Giants

After this,(L) a war broke out with the Philistines at Gezer. At that time Sibbecai the Hushathite killed Sippai, a descendant of the Rephaim,[j](M) and the Philistines were subdued.

Once again there was a battle with the Philistines, and Elhanan son of Jair killed Lahmi the brother of Goliath of Gath. The shaft of his spear was like a weaver’s beam.(N)

There was still another battle at Gath where there was a man of extraordinary stature with six fingers on each hand and six toes on each foot—twenty-four in all. He, too, was descended from the giant.[k] When he taunted Israel, Jonathan son of David’s brother Shimei killed him.

These were the descendants of the giant in Gath killed by David and his soldiers.

David’s Military Census

21 Satan[l](O) rose up against Israel and incited David(P) to count the people of Israel. So David said to Joab and the commanders of the troops, “Go and count Israel from Beer-sheba to Dan and bring a report to me so I can know their number.”(Q)

Joab replied, “May the Lord multiply the number of his people a hundred times over!(R) My lord the king, aren’t they all my lord’s servants? Why does my lord want to do this? Why should he bring guilt on Israel?”

Yet the king’s order prevailed over Joab. So Joab left and traveled throughout Israel and then returned to Jerusalem. Joab gave the total troop registration to David. In all Israel there were one million one hundred thousand armed men[m] and in Judah itself four hundred seventy thousand armed men. But he did not include Levi and Benjamin in the count because the king’s command was detestable to him. This command was also evil in God’s sight, so he afflicted Israel.

David said to God, “I have sinned greatly because I have done this thing. Now, please take away your servant’s guilt, for I’ve been very foolish.”(S)

David’s Punishment

Then(T) the Lord instructed Gad,(U) David’s seer,(V) 10 “Go and say to David, ‘This is what the Lord says: I am offering you three choices. Choose one of them for yourself, and I will do it to you.’”

11 So Gad went to David and said to him, “This is what the Lord says: ‘Take your choice: 12 three years of famine, or three months of devastation by your foes with the sword of your enemy overtaking you, or three days of the sword of the Lord—a plague on the land, the angel of the Lord bringing destruction to the whole territory of Israel.’ Now decide what answer I should take back to the one who sent me.”

13 David answered Gad, “I’m in anguish. Please, let me fall into the Lord’s hands because his mercies are very great,(W) but don’t let me fall into human hands.”

14 So the Lord sent a plague on Israel, and seventy thousand Israelite men died. 15 Then God sent an angel to Jerusalem to destroy it, but when the angel was about to destroy the city,[n] the Lord looked, relented concerning the destruction,(X) and said to the angel who was destroying the people, “Enough, withdraw your hand now!” The angel of the Lord was then standing at the threshing floor of Ornan[o] the Jebusite.

16 When David looked up and saw the angel of the Lord standing between earth and heaven, with his drawn sword in his hand stretched out over Jerusalem, David and the elders, clothed in sackcloth,(Y) fell facedown. 17 David said to God, “Wasn’t I the one who gave the order to count the people? I am the one who has sinned and acted very wickedly. But these sheep, what have they done? Lord my God, please let your hand be against me and against my father’s family, but don’t let the plague be against your people.”

David’s Altar

18 So the angel of the Lord ordered Gad(Z) to tell David to go and set up an altar to the Lord on the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite.(AA) 19 David went up at Gad’s command spoken in the name of the Lord.

20 Ornan was threshing wheat when he turned and saw the angel. His four sons, who were with him, hid. 21 David came to Ornan, and when Ornan looked and saw David, he left the threshing floor and bowed to David with his face to the ground.

22 Then David said to Ornan, “Give me this threshing-floor plot so that I may build an altar to the Lord on it. Give it to me for the full price, so the plague on the people may be stopped.”

23 Ornan said to David, “Take it! My lord the king may do whatever he wants.[p] See, I give the oxen for the burnt offerings, the threshing sledges for the wood, and the wheat for the grain offering—I give it all.”

24 King David answered Ornan, “No, I insist on paying the full price, for I will not take for the Lord what belongs to you or offer burnt offerings that cost me nothing.”

25 So David gave Ornan fifteen pounds of gold[q] for the plot. 26 He built an altar to the Lord there and offered burnt offerings and fellowship offerings. He called on the Lord, and he answered him with fire from heaven on the altar of burnt offering.(AB)

27 Then the Lord spoke to the angel, and he put his sword back into its sheath. 28 At that time, David offered sacrifices there when he saw that the Lord answered him at the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite. 29 The tabernacle of the Lord, which Moses made in the wilderness, and the altar of burnt offering were at the high place in Gibeon,(AC) 30 but David could not go before it to inquire of God, because he was terrified of the sword of the Lord’s angel.

Romans 2:25-3:8

Circumcision of the Heart

25 Circumcision benefits you if you observe the law, but if you are a lawbreaker, your circumcision has become uncircumcision.(A) 26 So if an uncircumcised(B) man keeps the law’s requirements,(C) will not his uncircumcision be counted as circumcision? 27 A man who is physically uncircumcised, but who keeps the law, will judge you(D) who are a lawbreaker in spite of having the letter of the law and circumcision. 28 For a person is not a Jew who is one outwardly,(E) and true circumcision is not something visible in the flesh. 29 On the contrary, a person is a Jew who is one inwardly,(F) and circumcision is of the heart—by the Spirit, not the letter.[a](G) That person’s praise is not from people but from God.(H)

Paul Answers an Objection

So what advantage does the Jew have? Or what is the benefit of circumcision? Considerable in every way. First, they were entrusted(I) with the very words of God.(J) What then? If some were unfaithful,(K) will their unfaithfulness nullify God’s faithfulness? Absolutely not!(L) Let God be true, even though everyone is a liar,(M) as it is written:

That you may be justified in your words
and triumph when you judge.[b](N)

But if our unrighteousness highlights[c] God’s righteousness,(O) what are we to say?(P) I am using a human argument:[d](Q) Is God unrighteous to inflict wrath? Absolutely not! Otherwise, how will God judge the world?(R) But if by my lie God’s truth abounds to his glory, why am I also still being judged as a sinner?(S) And why not say, just as some people slanderously claim we say, “Let us do what is evil so that good may come”?(T) Their condemnation is deserved!

Refuge in the Lord

For the choir director. Of David.

I have taken refuge in the Lord.(A)
How can you say to me,
“Escape to the mountains[a] like a bird!(B)
For look, the wicked string bows;
they put their arrows on bowstrings
to shoot from the shadows at the upright in heart.(C)
When the foundations are destroyed,
what can the righteous do?”(D)

The Lord is in his holy temple;(E)
the Lord—his throne is in heaven.(F)
His eyes watch;
his gaze[b] examines everyone.[c]
The Lord examines the righteous,
but he hates the wicked
and[d] those who love violence.(G)
Let him rain burning coals[e] and sulfur on the wicked;
let a scorching wind be the portion in their cup.(H)
For the Lord is righteous; he loves righteous deeds.
The upright will see his face.(I)

Community Prayer and Praise:

Good morning DAB. God bless you all. It’s July 11th and am in a hotel room with my two beautiful daughters that the Lord has gifted me with, 27 and 29. I’ve been listening to the podcast today. For Mary and Scott who have called in __ today I’ve heard it. You referred to your 25-year-old son loss and your dad and now it’s still for your soon to be 27-year-old son with brain cancer. I cannot, I cannot imagine what you’re going through and it brings me to my knees because I’m a mom who loves my kids. There are many of us who love our children. Know that I’m praying for you in the name of Jesus I’m praying for healing for the losses that you’ve already endured. I’m praying for healing of the illness of Joel and we’re binding that in the name of Jesus. We’re believing in God and praying for wisdom in this servant and peace that surpasses all understanding. And know that I’m going to be standing in the gap for you. Every single day, every single day I’m going to be standing in the gap. As I pray for many of you over and over again. I may not call that often but know that I listen every day and I pray alongside you each and every day. This is Esther from Flushing Queens. May God bless you and keep you. May he make His face should be gracious to you. I love you.

Hey family this is Malisa from Abbeville Alabama. Let’s pray. Father, in the name of Jesus, maker and creator of all things. Lord we thank You for all that You’ve done, all that You’re going to do the Lord. Lord, we ask You today to come alongside of Scott. Lord, he lost one son, he lost his daddy, now his other son, Joel, has a brain tumor. Lord, You said if we ask anything in Your name Lord You would do it and were asking You Lord to eradicate this cancer from this Young man. Lord, heal him from the crown of his head to the sole of his feet God. Have mercy on him Lord. Scott’s been through so much Lord. He needs You right now Jesus. Be with his whole family Lord. When he’s leaning and about to fall, hold him up Jesus. Lord, Your word says that You defined yesterday, today, and forever. Lord, if You healed, if You raised up Lazarus four days dead in the grave God You can heal Joel Lord. And Lord, not only Joel Lord, Jillian’s been on my mind Lord with a brain tumor. God I don’t know what state she’s in right now but God I know You’re able to heal her also Lord, so many with cancer, so many sick, so many strung out on drugs. God have mercy. Jesus we love You so much Lord and we’ll be careful to give You all the praise in Jesus name. Amen.

Hello Daily Audio Bible. This is Blue Butterfly from Daytona Beach calling. First I like to give a shout out to Pelham. I’m praying for you still. This is Daniel, thank you for your encouraging words all the time. Blind Tony, I love, love, love all that you do and really appreciate them. But most especially, Terry the truck driver, I pray for you often. My father’s name was Terry and he died because he was an alcoholic most of his life. He’s been gone for 15 years and you have a special place in my heart. He died in my home. My daughter at the time was 12 years old and I remember he was in the hospital a week before he passed away and she gave him a card and when he opened it it said “please Papa don’t die please, please.” And I’ll never forget that. So, I hope that when you’re faced with drugs or alcohol that you just remember that there’s people out there that don’t want you to die even though you will live with the Lord once you do die on this earth. They don’t want you to die now. They need you. So, I pray for you so often. Every time I think of my father I pray for you. I’m asking for prayer request for my granddaughter Emmaline who turned 1 on July 4th, the same day as Jill. She went for her one year checkup…

Hey DAB this is Curtis from Calli. Been a very long time since I’ve called in. I was listening to the prayer line and I wanted to pray for Scott and for his son Joel. Yeah man, I just listen to it and I…and I…and I stopped the prayer line and just called right in, but Scott I just want you to know that I’m praying for you, that all believers that I’m around, that I will encourage them to pray for you and your son. I can hear it in your voice at the end of your prayer request you were choking up of over your boy. And you’ve got me choking up. Awe man. So, Scott, know that your boy is in our prayers. Let God for the healing over this young man, put healing over this family that’s been through so much recently, and have faith, have belief that’ll come to fruition Scott. So, we love you and we are all praying for you. My family will dedicate prayers to you every night. __.

The Daily Audio Bible Reading for Saturday July 14, 2018 (NIV)

1 Chronicles 16:37-18:17

37 David left Asaph and his associates before the ark of the covenant of the Lord to minister there regularly, according to each day’s requirements.(A) 38 He also left Obed-Edom(B) and his sixty-eight associates to minister with them. Obed-Edom son of Jeduthun, and also Hosah,(C) were gatekeepers.

39 David left Zadok(D) the priest and his fellow priests before the tabernacle of the Lord at the high place in Gibeon(E) 40 to present burnt offerings to the Lord on the altar of burnt offering regularly, morning and evening, in accordance with everything written in the Law(F) of the Lord, which he had given Israel. 41 With them were Heman(G) and Jeduthun and the rest of those chosen and designated by name to give thanks to the Lord, “for his love endures forever.” 42 Heman and Jeduthun were responsible for the sounding of the trumpets and cymbals and for the playing of the other instruments for sacred song.(H) The sons of Jeduthun(I) were stationed at the gate.

43 Then all the people left, each for their own home, and David returned home to bless his family.

God’s Promise to David(J)

17 After David was settled in his palace, he said to Nathan the prophet, “Here I am, living in a house of cedar, while the ark of the covenant of the Lord is under a tent.(K)

Nathan replied to David, “Whatever you have in mind,(L) do it, for God is with you.”

But that night the word of God came to Nathan, saying:

“Go and tell my servant David, ‘This is what the Lord says: You(M) are not the one to build me a house to dwell in. I have not dwelt in a house from the day I brought Israel up out of Egypt to this day. I have moved from one tent site to another, from one dwelling place to another. Wherever I have moved with all the Israelites, did I ever say to any of their leaders[a] whom I commanded to shepherd my people, “Why have you not built me a house of cedar?(N)”’

“Now then, tell my servant David, ‘This is what the Lord Almighty says: I took you from the pasture, from tending the flock, and appointed you ruler(O) over my people Israel. I have been with you wherever you have gone, and I have cut off all your enemies from before you. Now I will make your name like the names of the greatest men on earth. And I will provide a place for my people Israel and will plant them so that they can have a home of their own and no longer be disturbed. Wicked people will not oppress them anymore, as they did at the beginning 10 and have done ever since the time I appointed leaders(P) over my people Israel. I will also subdue all your enemies.

“‘I declare to you that the Lord will build a house for you: 11 When your days are over and you go to be with your ancestors, I will raise up your offspring to succeed you, one of your own sons, and I will establish his kingdom. 12 He is the one who will build(Q) a house for me, and I will establish his throne forever.(R) 13 I will be his father,(S) and he will be my son.(T) I will never take my love away from him, as I took it away from your predecessor. 14 I will set him over my house and my kingdom forever; his throne(U) will be established forever.(V)’”

15 Nathan reported to David all the words of this entire revelation.

David’s Prayer(W)

16 Then King David went in and sat before the Lord, and he said:

“Who am I, Lord God, and what is my family, that you have brought me this far? 17 And as if this were not enough in your sight, my God, you have spoken about the future of the house of your servant. You, Lord God, have looked on me as though I were the most exalted of men.

18 “What more can David say to you for honoring your servant? For you know your servant, 19 Lord. For the sake(X) of your servant and according to your will, you have done this great thing and made known all these great promises.(Y)

20 “There is no one like you, Lord, and there is no God but you,(Z) as we have heard with our own ears. 21 And who is like your people Israel—the one nation on earth whose God went out to redeem(AA) a people for himself, and to make a name for yourself, and to perform great and awesome wonders by driving out nations from before your people, whom you redeemed from Egypt? 22 You made your people Israel your very own forever,(AB) and you, Lord, have become their God.

23 “And now, Lord, let the promise(AC) you have made concerning your servant and his house be established forever. Do as you promised, 24 so that it will be established and that your name will be great forever. Then people will say, ‘The Lord Almighty, the God over Israel, is Israel’s God!’ And the house of your servant David will be established before you.

25 “You, my God, have revealed to your servant that you will build a house for him. So your servant has found courage to pray to you. 26 You, Lord, are God! You have promised these good things to your servant. 27 Now you have been pleased to bless the house of your servant, that it may continue forever in your sight;(AD) for you, Lord, have blessed it, and it will be blessed forever.”

David’s Victories(AE)

18 In the course of time, David defeated the Philistines and subdued them, and he took Gath and its surrounding villages from the control of the Philistines.

David also defeated the Moabites,(AF) and they became subject to him and brought him tribute.

Moreover, David defeated Hadadezer king of Zobah,(AG) in the vicinity of Hamath, when he went to set up his monument at[b] the Euphrates River.(AH) David captured a thousand of his chariots, seven thousand charioteers and twenty thousand foot soldiers. He hamstrung(AI) all but a hundred of the chariot horses.

When the Arameans of Damascus(AJ) came to help Hadadezer king of Zobah, David struck down twenty-two thousand of them. He put garrisons in the Aramean kingdom of Damascus, and the Arameans became subject to him and brought him tribute. The Lord gave David victory wherever he went.

David took the gold shields carried by the officers of Hadadezer and brought them to Jerusalem. From Tebah[c] and Kun, towns that belonged to Hadadezer, David took a great quantity of bronze, which Solomon used to make the bronze Sea,(AK) the pillars and various bronze articles.

When Tou king of Hamath heard that David had defeated the entire army of Hadadezer king of Zobah, 10 he sent his son Hadoram to King David to greet him and congratulate him on his victory in battle over Hadadezer, who had been at war with Tou. Hadoram brought all kinds of articles of gold, of silver and of bronze.

11 King David dedicated these articles to the Lord, as he had done with the silver and gold he had taken from all these nations: Edom(AL) and Moab, the Ammonites and the Philistines, and Amalek.(AM)

12 Abishai son of Zeruiah struck down eighteen thousand Edomites(AN) in the Valley of Salt. 13 He put garrisons in Edom, and all the Edomites became subject to David. The Lord gave David victory wherever he went.

David’s Officials(AO)

14 David reigned(AP) over all Israel,(AQ) doing what was just and right for all his people. 15 Joab(AR) son of Zeruiah was over the army; Jehoshaphat son of Ahilud was recorder; 16 Zadok(AS) son of Ahitub and Ahimelek[d](AT) son of Abiathar were priests; Shavsha was secretary; 17 Benaiah son of Jehoiada was over the Kerethites and Pelethites;(AU) and David’s sons were chief officials at the king’s side.

Romans 2:1-24

God’s Righteous Judgment

You, therefore, have no excuse,(A) you who pass judgment on someone else, for at whatever point you judge another, you are condemning yourself, because you who pass judgment do the same things.(B) Now we know that God’s judgment against those who do such things is based on truth. So when you, a mere human being, pass judgment on them and yet do the same things, do you think you will escape God’s judgment? Or do you show contempt for the riches(C) of his kindness,(D) forbearance(E) and patience,(F) not realizing that God’s kindness is intended to lead you to repentance?(G)

But because of your stubbornness and your unrepentant heart, you are storing up wrath against yourself for the day of God’s wrath(H), when his righteous judgment(I) will be revealed. God “will repay each person according to what they have done.”[a](J) To those who by persistence in doing good seek glory, honor(K) and immortality,(L) he will give eternal life.(M) But for those who are self-seeking and who reject the truth and follow evil,(N) there will be wrath and anger.(O) There will be trouble and distress for every human being who does evil:(P) first for the Jew, then for the Gentile;(Q) 10 but glory, honor and peace for everyone who does good: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile.(R) 11 For God does not show favoritism.(S)

12 All who sin apart from the law will also perish apart from the law, and all who sin under the law(T) will be judged by the law. 13 For it is not those who hear the law who are righteous in God’s sight, but it is those who obey(U) the law who will be declared righteous. 14 (Indeed, when Gentiles, who do not have the law, do by nature things required by the law,(V) they are a law for themselves, even though they do not have the law. 15 They show that the requirements of the law are written on their hearts, their consciences also bearing witness, and their thoughts sometimes accusing them and at other times even defending them.) 16 This will take place on the day when God judges people’s secrets(W) through Jesus Christ,(X) as my gospel(Y) declares.

The Jews and the Law

17 Now you, if you call yourself a Jew; if you rely on the law and boast in God;(Z) 18 if you know his will and approve of what is superior because you are instructed by the law; 19 if you are convinced that you are a guide for the blind, a light for those who are in the dark, 20 an instructor of the foolish, a teacher of little children, because you have in the law the embodiment of knowledge and truth— 21 you, then, who teach others, do you not teach yourself? You who preach against stealing, do you steal?(AA) 22 You who say that people should not commit adultery, do you commit adultery? You who abhor idols, do you rob temples?(AB) 23 You who boast in the law,(AC) do you dishonor God by breaking the law? 24 As it is written: “God’s name is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you.”[b](AD)

the nations(B) will perish from his land.
17 You, Lord, hear the desire of the afflicted;(C)

18 defending the fatherless(E) and the oppressed,(F)
so that mere earthly mortals
will never again strike terror.

1 Chronicles 15:1-16:13, Romans 1:18-32 , Psalms 10:1-15, Proverbs 19:6-7

Today is the 13th day of July. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I’m Brian as has been the case every day for a while now and it’s great to be here with you today for the next step forward in life and in the Scriptures. So, in the Old Testament we are reading through the book 1 Chronicles and the reign of David and in the New Testament, we’ve just begun the first of the letters of Paul, the book of Romans. So, we’re reading from the New International version this week. First Chronicles chapter 15 verse 1 through 16, verse 36.

Commentary:

Okay. So, we’re just getting going in the book of Romans. And as we’ve said several times, this is the first of Paul’s letters. And we’ll be journeying through Paul’s letters for a while now. So, we’ve moved past the greetings and why this letter is being written and Paul’s desire to come to Rome and all of that and he’s kind of launched into what he has to say today. And he’s not speaking to the Romans, in particular in what he’s saying. He’s speaking about all of humanity in what he’s saying today. He’s kind of starting at the beginning. And if you go back and read the passage today that we just read, you know, like if you had to boil it all down, distill it all down to what is being said here, it is that humanity has no excuse for not knowing God. God has always been a part of the story and He created the world we live in and He created our species of humanity. So, all you have to do is look around to know there’s a God. Like, it’s everywhere. The evidence of God is everywhere you look, but essentially what Paul is saying is, but humanity has forgotten who it is. And just let me quote Paul, “for although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to Him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools, and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like mortal human beings and birds and animals and reptiles.” So, Paul’s starting at the beginning of our story and saying, effectively, here is how things became the way that they are. People abandoned who God was and then they forgot who they were. And then according to Paul, and I’m quoting again, “God gave them over”, which is essentially saying, God let them go the way that they were choosing to go. And where they went, according to Paul, and quoting Paul, is that “they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator who is forever praised.” Amen. So, now that we know Paul is doing, sort of starting at the beginning of the story and going all the way through the story explaining why things are the way that they are and what can be done about it, we get some understanding about the territory that we’re walking into. And some of the territory that we’re walking into is so good that it’s too good to be true. And one of the things that we will get out of the book of Romans and out of the letters of Paul is, if all of this is really available to me why am I living less than this. And we should keep that in mind, because it’s a question we should ask ourselves often as we consider the implications of what Paul will tell us over time. But we’re just getting going and Paul is starting at the beginning of the story and working his way forward.

Prayer:

Father, we thank You for that. We thank You for the book of Romans. We thank You for the opportunity to start at the beginning and work our way forward and find ourselves in all of this. And we certainly invite Your Holy Spirit at every step of the way to show us the ways in which we are living less than You have called us to live, the ways in which we are settling for things that we don’t even want anyway when such a glorious adventure is what we are invited into. Come Holy Spirit, we pray. Plant the words deep into our hearts. Cultivate the fruit of the Spirit within us. We ask in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Hello everybody. Hey, this is Annette from Oklahoma City. SarahJane, you are the woman. Thank you, thank you, thank you. This is God ordained. Thank you in so many ways I couldn’t even list. Hey everybody, I, because of the nature of my job and the things that I’ve been involved in lately, some things went wrong, I had nothing to do with it but unfortunately I got caught up in it. I didn’t do anything wrong. Thank you. But I had to go in front of, kind of like I board, and I hate to call it testifying because it wasn’t that formal but it was really scary and I kind of knew that was going to come but I didn’t know is that it was going to come today and Candace from Oregon, my sister, I’m a little bit behind on Saturdays community prayer and today is the 10th which is my DAB birthday. Woo hoo. So, anyways, but Candace, when I walked into the meeting, I heard your song, [singing], no, never alone, Annette you’re never alone [singing ends]. Hey, I just wanted to thank you and that really touched me and obviously it was timely. But I just wanted to thank you guys and keeping me in prayer and hopefully this all will just get straightened out and everything is okay. I’m fine. It’s no big deal. Just the companies trying to be pushy and things are…they’re just trying to avoid the system. That’s all it is. So, I love you. I will see you in Tennessee. Woo hoo. I can’t wait. Have a great day. Bye-bye.

Hi there. My name is Melissa and I’ve been listening to the Daily Audio Bible since the beginning of the year. My husband Anthony and I are in need of direction from the Lord regarding where we should move our family and I was wondering if you guys could all pray for us. I’ve really appreciate the show and just moving forward in God’s word has truly been refreshing for me. We have three small children and it’s been a huge gift to me as I listen to it when I’m driving in the car. And, thank you Ali. I am so grateful for your prayer. Bye.

Father God, thank You so much for where You have placed us. Thank You for our homes and our villages, towns, and cities that we live in. Thank You for our workplace, Lord. Thank You for the place we volunteer at. Thank You for that community group we go along too. Thank You for our church. Lord, I want to lift up our workplaces, especially to You and pray a blessing on those places. Lord, these are our places where we’ve got the opportunity to shine and to be Jesus to people who don’t know You and who probably won’t come across or probably won’t walk into a church. Lord, help us be salt and light, help us be love, and please Lord, keep a strong especially as we face opposition and come up against the enemy and just the hate that is around. Help us be above that Lord. Lord, we also lift up our bosses and the boards of trustees, the boards of directors, and the council boards, that You’d be giving them wisdom on how best to bless the workplace on what decisions they need to make. If there’s any cuts that need to happen Lord, that they would do that the Right Way. Lord, in this time of uncertainty when many workplaces have…are going through cuts…budget cuts and things like that Lord, I pray that You’d be a comfort to the employees. Lord, thank You for our brothers and sisters in that situation. And I pray Lord, that You would be a comfort to them in that. In this time of uncertainty, I pray that You’d be our strength and our security and __. In Jesus’ Holy and precious name. Amen. Good morning guys. This is Michaela from Gloucester in the UK also known as Beloved by Him. Hope you have good and blessed day wherever you are.

Good morning family. This is Cherry Chase. I was going to say Cherry Pie but we’ve got another Cherry Pie on the line now. So, I’m just going to stay with Cherry Chase. 1 Chronicles 12:19-14:17, Romans 1:1-17 , Psalms 9:13-20, Proverbs 19:4-5

Today is the 12th day of July. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I am Brian. It is wonderful to be here with you today as we take the next step forward in our journey through the Scriptures. And the journey, when we get to the New Testament, will bring us into a new book. We finished the book of Acts yesterday. But before we get there, 1 Chronicles chapter 12 verse 19 to 14 verse 17.

Introduction to the book of Romans:

Okay. So, we finished the book of Acts yesterday, which brings us to the book of Romans, which is the first letter of the apostle Paul that appears in the New Testament. And most biblical scholars would say this is Paul’s crowning jewel. This is his greatest work in outlining in written form what he had been traveling around preaching - the good news of the gospel. And one of the things that we have to understand about the letters of Paul is that they were written before the Gospels were written and before the book of Acts was written, obviously not before the things written in the Gospels in the book of acts happened but before they were written down. So, Paul’s traveling around evangelizing, preaching the good news of Jesus. So he’s educated and he’s literate and he writes letters back to the churches that have been formed to further instruct them because there was no New Testament for them to refer to. And these letters were treasured by the churches and copied and passed around to the other churches. So, the letters of the apostle Paul are some of the earliest Christian writings that we have. So, Paul probably wrote this letter to the Romans from the city of Corinth, where some of his greatest missionary work and been accomplished. And it’s probably written in the mid-50s. And when Paul finished this letter he sent Phoebe, probably from the church in Contraya, which is just outside of Corinth to hand deliver the letter and make an introduction to the apostle Paul. Of course, Paul was a Roman citizen and he had a passion for his people. We’ve been learning about the apostle Paul in the book of Acts. He couldn’t wait to visit Rome but he had other business to attend to before he could go there, the first thing being a trip to Jerusalem where, unfortunately, his plans took a turn and he was arrested and kept in captivity for several years. And Paul does make his way to Rome as we know from the book of Acts. Like, we just went through this great shipwreck, getting him to Rome, but he makes his first trip to Rome as a prisoner. And the church in Rome was implanted by Paul. And we don’t actually know who brought the gospel of Jesus to Rome, but if we’re going to speculate, it was probably someone or a group of people who were in the upper room maybe, or around the outpouring of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, who likely carried the gospel back to Rome and established the church there. But of course that’s speculation. The central theme that we’ll find in the book of Romans is righteousness, our need for righteousness, the righteousness that the work of Christ offers us and our obligation to live into that righteousness, to be transformed, that our nature is actually changed so that we can live as righteous people. And the book shows who God is, the work of Jesus, and it shines a mirror in our faces and shows us who we are without Christ. No matter how good we think we are, no matter how benevolent we’ve been, no matter how loving we think we are, without Jesus it’s all filthy rags. So, let’s enjoy our time in the book of Romans. It’s one of the greatest doctrinal works we have in all of Christianity. So, let’s drink deep from one of the earliest documents we have in the faith. Romans chapter 1 verse 1 through 17.

Prayer:

Father, we thank You for Your word. And as we turn the page in the New Testament and move, not into a new era, but into some new territory where we will be working our way through the letters of the apostle Paul, we invite Your Holy Spirit. We invite Your Holy Spirit to give us context, to give us history, to give us wisdom, and to apply all of these things into our lives and into our faith that we might grow, that we might mature, and that we might be become fully grown, mature people, Your people on this earth representing You, and announcing the renewal of all things. Come Holy Spirit we pray. In Jesus’ name we ask. Amen.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Hello Daily Audio Bible family. This is Standing Firm. I have not called in in a while and frankly I have not been Standing Firm. I’ve been living in the Greenville South Carolina area and I’m going to pray and ask for forgiveness and pray for all of you. Dear Father, I thank You so much for Your kindness, Your mercy and Your grace. And Lord You know everything that’s going on in my life - depression and loneliness. Thank You just for the times that I just fail and fall and ask You to forgive me for that and not just __ You but for the strength that You provide, a strength that You can always give and that the cross is right there for my taking and You have given back to us freely. Lord, I thank You for the cross Lord. I thank You for forgiveness. I thank You for being the one and only way to heaven and there is no other God. You are all there is. Father, I thank You for all these friends that one day I will see, which will be a glorious reunion. Thank You so much. I pray for all those out there struggling with depression and loneliness. Just keep Your head up. Look to the cross. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Hello Daily Audio Bible family. This is One Out of the Shell from Central Florida. And I have a couple of requests and I want to agree in prayer for some of our family members that have called in. First, my brother has a child, two girls and he lives in Nevada and he’s trying to get custody of his two-year-old daughter because the mother is having a lot of serious mental challenges right now and it’s come to the point of being dangerous for my little niece. So, please lift up that situation in agreement with me that she’ll be able to be with her father and her brother in a safe environment. Pray for him as well please. They’re are going to court this week, I believe it’s within the week if not this week. The other situation I’m asking prepare for is, my daughter called that in about a week or so ago. Her name is Danielle. I’ve seen some progress. We have a whole lot more to go…so. And then finally, we have a business opportunity that looks very promising that we believe the Lord brought to us that I really know in my heart there some things that my husband and I need to address and I need the Lord to really confirm this to me because it means quitting my regular full-time job. So, be in agreement with me about that please. Cherry Pie, I hear you honey and I want to pray for you right now along with all of the single bonds. Been there done that. Father God, we just thank You for this dear sweet sister and all the other sisters and brothers that are going through the same thing. Bring them peace, wisdom, guidance…

Hi Daily Audio Bible family. This is Adam in Chiga Heights Ohio. I’ve been listening for a long time and actually have never called then a prayer request but I have an important prayer request for my sister-in-law’s son, so my nephew in Stockholm Sweden. He has water on his brain. His head is…he’s eight months old…and his head has been growing. And the doctors really haven’t been doing much over there in Sweden. And, so, we’ve been a little bit frustrated. And, so, finally he had an MRI, took an MRI. They’re going to find out the results of it. But they said last week when they took the MRI if its just normal water on the brain we are going to do surgery in August / September. But if it’s something severe like a tumor or potential cancer we’re going to do surgery right away. Now, they called in today and said they’re going to do surgery right away. So, naturally they’re extremely worried, extremely scared. They are not…not…my brother-in-law’s not a Christian, but God’s been really working on his heart. So, pray for him. He’s really prayerful but I know God’s going to do a miracle here. And his name is William. He’s eight months old and if you could really pray that God would…my prayer is that he would live and not die and proclaim God’s good works. If you could join with me in prayer for William, I’d really appreciate that. Thank you. Bye.

Hey Brian. It’s Jeff from Syracuse calling. It’s been a couple of months since I touched base with you. Going through some tough times. My wife who I called in about in the past, she did go home to be with Jesus, 55 years old. Just a wonderful creature that loved God with her whole heart. Horrible, horrible ovarian cancer. Hard but God knows what He’s doing. Very difficult being alone. Being in this world without your help mate that you basically lived your entire life around and were looking to tend to the golden years together and see things and do things together. But Brian, I’m so glad for your program because, quite frankly, you put us in touch with the heart of God and there is nothing that is going to provide that intimacy with our Creator, especially during time of horrible grief like this, then being with Jesus Christ at the essence of that. And I just love your program Brian because you emphasize, you emphasize caring that comes from Jesus, the love that emanates, the godly love that emanates from him. And it’s just so refreshing to come in to hear that when you’ve been out in the world where there really isn’t any love. There’s just faults, idols, and distractions, and everything else. That Satan’s game. But Brian, you’ve got us into God’s game which is, I love you my children, I want you. Come back to me I’m your good Shepherd. Thanks so much Brian. I love it when you say at the end, I’m Brian and I love you. And it just means so much to me. God bless you. Bye-bye

The Daily Audio Bible Reading for Friday July 13, 2018 (NIV)

1 Chronicles 15:1-16:36

The Ark Brought to Jerusalem(A)

15 After David had constructed buildings for himself in the City of David, he prepared(B) a place for the ark of God and pitched(C) a tent for it. Then David said, “No one but the Levites(D) may carry(E) the ark of God, because the Lord chose them to carry the ark of the Lord and to minister(F) before him forever.”

David assembled all Israel(G) in Jerusalem to bring up the ark of the Lord to the place he had prepared for it. He called together the descendants of Aaron and the Levites:(H)

From the descendants of Kohath,

Uriel(I) the leader and 120 relatives;

from the descendants of Merari,

Asaiah the leader and 220 relatives;

from the descendants of Gershon,[a]

Joel the leader and 130 relatives;

from the descendants of Elizaphan,(J)

Shemaiah the leader and 200 relatives;

from the descendants of Hebron,(K)

Eliel the leader and 80 relatives;

10 from the descendants of Uzziel,

Amminadab the leader and 112 relatives.

11 Then David summoned Zadok(L) and Abiathar(M) the priests, and Uriel, Asaiah, Joel, Shemaiah, Eliel and Amminadab the Levites. 12 He said to them, “You are the heads of the Levitical families; you and your fellow Levites are to consecrate(N) yourselves and bring up the ark of the Lord, the God of Israel, to the place I have prepared for it. 13 It was because you, the Levites,(O) did not bring it up the first time that the Lord our God broke out in anger against us.(P) We did not inquire of him about how to do it in the prescribed way.(Q) 14 So the priests and Levites consecrated themselves in order to bring up the ark of the Lord, the God of Israel. 15 And the Levites carried the ark of God with the poles on their shoulders, as Moses had commanded(R) in accordance with the word of the Lord.(S)

16 David(T) told the leaders of the Levites(U) to appoint their fellow Levites as musicians(V) to make a joyful sound with musical instruments: lyres, harps and cymbals.(W)

17 So the Levites appointed Heman(X) son of Joel; from his relatives, Asaph(Y) son of Berekiah; and from their relatives the Merarites,(Z) Ethan son of Kushaiah; 18 and with them their relatives next in rank: Zechariah,[b] Jaaziel, Shemiramoth, Jehiel, Unni, Eliab, Benaiah, Maaseiah, Mattithiah, Eliphelehu, Mikneiah, Obed-Edom(AA) and Jeiel,[c] the gatekeepers.

19 The musicians Heman,(AB) Asaph and Ethan were to sound the bronze cymbals; 20 Zechariah, Jaaziel,[d] Shemiramoth, Jehiel, Unni, Eliab, Maaseiah and Benaiah were to play the lyres according to alamoth,[e] 21 and Mattithiah, Eliphelehu, Mikneiah, Obed-Edom, Jeiel and Azaziah were to play the harps, directing according to sheminith.[f] 22 Kenaniah the head Levite was in charge of the singing; that was his responsibility because he was skillful at it.

23 Berekiah and Elkanah were to be doorkeepers for the ark. 24 Shebaniah, Joshaphat, Nethanel, Amasai, Zechariah, Benaiah and Eliezer the priests were to blow trumpets(AC) before the ark of God. Obed-Edom and Jehiah were also to be doorkeepers for the ark.

25 So David and the elders of Israel and the commanders of units of a thousand went to bring up the ark(AD) of the covenant of the Lord from the house of Obed-Edom, with rejoicing. 26 Because God had helped the Levites who were carrying the ark of the covenant of the Lord, seven bulls and seven rams(AE) were sacrificed. 27 Now David was clothed in a robe of fine linen, as were all the Levites who were carrying the ark, and as were the musicians, and Kenaniah, who was in charge of the singing of the choirs. David also wore a linen ephod.(AF) 28 So all Israel(AG) brought up the ark of the covenant of the Lord with shouts,(AH) with the sounding of rams’ horns(AI) and trumpets, and of cymbals, and the playing of lyres and harps.

29 As the ark of the covenant of the Lord was entering the City of David, Michal daughter of Saul watched from a window. And when she saw King David dancing and celebrating, she despised him in her heart.

Ministering Before the Ark(AJ)(AK)(AL)

16 They brought the ark of God and set it inside the tent that David had pitched(AM) for it, and they presented burnt offerings and fellowship offerings before God. After David had finished sacrificing the burnt offerings and fellowship offerings, he blessed(AN) the people in the name of the Lord. Then he gave a loaf of bread, a cake of dates and a cake of raisins(AO) to each Israelite man and woman.

He appointed some of the Levites to minister(AP) before the ark of the Lord, to extol,[g] thank, and praise the Lord, the God of Israel: Asaph was the chief, and next to him in rank were Zechariah, then Jaaziel,[h] Shemiramoth, Jehiel, Mattithiah, Eliab, Benaiah, Obed-Edom and Jeiel. They were to play the lyres and harps, Asaph was to sound the cymbals, and Benaiah and Jahaziel the priests were to blow the trumpets regularly before the ark of the covenant of God.

That day David first appointed Asaph and his associates to give praise(AQ) to the Lord in this manner:

Give praise(AR) to the Lord, proclaim his name;
make known among the nations(AS) what he has done.
Sing to him, sing praise(AT) to him;
tell of all his wonderful acts.
10 Glory in his holy name;(AU)
let the hearts of those who seek the Lord rejoice.
11 Look to the Lord and his strength;
seek(AV) his face always.

12 Remember(AW) the wonders(AX) he has done,
his miracles,(AY) and the judgments he pronounced,
13 you his servants, the descendants of Israel,
his chosen ones, the children of Jacob.
14 He is the Lord our God;
his judgments(AZ) are in all the earth.

15 He remembers[i](BA) his covenant forever,
the promise he made, for a thousand generations,
16 the covenant(BB) he made with Abraham,
the oath he swore to Isaac.
17 He confirmed it to Jacob(BC) as a decree,
to Israel as an everlasting covenant:
18 “To you I will give the land of Canaan(BD)
as the portion you will inherit.”

19 When they were but few in number,(BE)
few indeed, and strangers in it,
20 they[j] wandered(BF) from nation to nation,
from one kingdom to another.
21 He allowed no one to oppress them;
for their sake he rebuked kings:(BG)
22 “Do not touch my anointed ones;
do my prophets(BH) no harm.”

23 Sing to the Lord, all the earth;
proclaim his salvation day after day.
24 Declare his glory(BI) among the nations,
his marvelous deeds among all peoples.

25 For great is the Lord and most worthy of praise;(BJ)
he is to be feared(BK) above all gods.(BL)
26 For all the gods of the nations are idols,
but the Lord made the heavens.(BM)
27 Splendor and majesty are before him;
strength and joy are in his dwelling place.

28 Ascribe to the Lord, all you families of nations,
ascribe to the Lord glory and strength.(BN)
29 Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name;(BO)
bring an offering and come before him.
Worship the Lord in the splendor of his[k] holiness.(BP)
30 Tremble(BQ) before him, all the earth!
The world is firmly established; it cannot be moved.(BR)

31 Let the heavens rejoice, let the earth be glad;(BS)
let them say among the nations, “The Lord reigns!(BT)
32 Let the sea resound, and all that is in it;(BU)
let the fields be jubilant, and everything in them!
33 Let the trees(BV) of the forest sing,
let them sing for joy before the Lord,
for he comes to judge(BW) the earth.

34 Give thanks(BX) to the Lord, for he is good;(BY)
his love endures forever.(BZ)
35 Cry out, “Save us, God our Savior;(CA)
gather us and deliver us from the nations,
that we may give thanks to your holy name,
and glory in your praise.”
36 Praise be to the Lord, the God of Israel,(CB)
from everlasting to everlasting.

Then all the people said “Amen” and “Praise the Lord.”

Romans 1:18-32

God’s Wrath Against Sinful Humanity

18 The wrath of God(A) is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of people, who suppress the truth by their wickedness, 19 since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them.(B) 20 For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made,(C) so that people are without excuse.(D)

21 For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened.(E) 22 Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools(F) 23 and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images(G) made to look like a mortal human being and birds and animals and reptiles.

24 Therefore God gave them over(H) in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another.(I) 25 They exchanged the truth about God for a lie,(J) and worshiped and served created things(K) rather than the Creator—who is forever praised.(L) Amen.(M)

26 Because of this, God gave them over(N) to shameful lusts.(O) Even their women exchanged natural sexual relations for unnatural ones.(P) 27 In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed shameful acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their error.(Q)

28 Furthermore, just as they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, so God gave them over(R) to a depraved mind, so that they do what ought not to be done. 29 They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice. They are gossips,(S) 30 slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil; they disobey their parents;(T) 31 they have no understanding, no fidelity, no love,(U) no mercy. 32 Although they know God’s righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death,(V) they not only continue to do these very things but also approve(W) of those who practice them.

Psalm 10:1-15

Psalm 10[a]

Why, Lord, do you stand far off?(A)
Why do you hide yourself(B) in times of trouble?

In his arrogance the wicked man hunts down the weak,(C)
who are caught in the schemes he devises.
He boasts(D) about the cravings of his heart;
he blesses the greedy and reviles the Lord.(E)
In his pride the wicked man does not seek him;
in all his thoughts there is no room for God.(F)
His ways are always prosperous;
your laws are rejected by[b] him;
he sneers at all his enemies.
He says to himself, “Nothing will ever shake me.”
He swears, “No one will ever do me harm.”(G)

His mouth is full(H) of lies and threats;(I)
trouble and evil are under his tongue.(J)
He lies in wait(K) near the villages;
from ambush he murders the innocent.(L)
His eyes watch in secret for his victims;
like a lion in cover he lies in wait.
He lies in wait to catch the helpless;(M)
he catches the helpless and drags them off in his net.(N)
10 His victims are crushed,(O) they collapse;
they fall under his strength.
11 He says to himself, “God will never notice;(P)
he covers his face and never sees.”(Q)

12 Arise,(R) Lord! Lift up your hand,(S) O God.
Do not forget the helpless.(T)
13 Why does the wicked man revile God?(U)
Why does he say to himself,
“He won’t call me to account”?(V)
14 But you, God, see the trouble(W) of the afflicted;
you consider their grief and take it in hand.
The victims commit themselves to you;(X)
you are the helper(Y) of the fatherless.
15 Break the arm of the wicked man;(Z)
call the evildoer to account for his wickedness
that would not otherwise be found out.

Proverbs 19:6-7

Many curry favor with a ruler,(A)
and everyone is the friend of one who gives gifts.(B)

The poor are shunned by all their relatives—
how much more do their friends avoid them!(C)
Though the poor pursue them with pleading,
they are nowhere to be found.[a](D)
