Leviticus 6:1-7:27, Mark 3:7-30, Psalms 37:1-11, Proverbs 10:3-4

Today is the 18th day of February. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I’m Brian. It is wonderful to be here with you today. It is a travel day today, a long, a long one at that. We’ll talk about that in a little bit. We’ve got a brand-new shiny, sparkly week just waiting to unfold before us. And we will step into that week by taking the next step forward in the Scriptures. Of course, we’ll be picking up where we left off yesterday. This week will read from the God’s Word Translation. Leviticus chapter 6 verse 1 through 7 verse 27.

Commentary:

Alright, so, in the book of Mark we encounter this story where when Jesus is being accused of being in league with the devil. And that’s where he’s getting his power to cast out devils. Now, as I’m mentioned when we began the book of Mark, Mark was the first Gospel to be written. Next in time, over a decade later, came Matthew. But we saw this story in Matthew and we talked about it. We talked about the unpardonable sin. The synoptic Gospels – Matthew, Mark, and Luke - share similar stories. A lot of the source material for the stories in Matthew and Luke are found in Mark because that’s where they were first documented. So, we talked about this story when we read through this story in Matthew but now let’s take another pass. Let’s not just talk about this unpardonable sin, let’s talk about what Jesus is saying. The accusation is that Jesus is throwing out demons by the power of the prince of demons. And Jesus response is, ‘how can Satan force out Satan? If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot last.’ Right? So, we’re all on the same page. Right? That would be civil war. And that will only undermine the infrastructure of the whole. The kingdom will come apart at the seams. There’s plenty of historical precedents throughout human history for this being true. Okay, so let’s take it out of, you know, historical empires and land it squarely in our own laps, because Jesus went on. ‘And if the household is divided against itself, that household will not last.’ Okay. So, Jesus has given a very comprehensive answer here. From a cosmic perspective, he’s saying, how can Satan force out Satan. And then He moves more toward society and the governance of society. ‘If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot last.’ And then he brings it down into every home. ‘And if the household is divided against itself, that household will not last.’ So, if our homes are a war zone then we could probably say that our house is divided against itself, and that household will not last if it stays divided against itself. And we see this kind of unrest in the world. Right? So, like, I mean, I know it’s all over the world. But I happen to live in the United States. So how long can we say we are one nation? So, we are one people under God. We just happen to disagree about everything and we fight each other all of the time. Right? How can we say we are one house under God? We too have come together into the covenant of marriage and no longer are we two, we become one, we become this thing, we establish this household, we are in this together when we are completely at each other’s throats, all the time undermining the infrastructure of our home. Things can’t last that way. With our own two hands we tear it apart. Or probably better spoken, with our own two tongs we tear it apart. With the same lips that we use for affection, we shoot bullets at each other and that won’t stand. And all we’re doing is sabotaging ourselves. And, I mean, this isn’t a the new thing. This has been going on in the world a long, long time. And I know there are all kinds of struggles in marriage. It’s a hard job. However, the job isn’t going to get easier until we can get on the same page about what Jesus is saying. Our divided allegiances will not work out in the end. Civil war inside our homes isn’t going to lead us on the narrow path that leads to life. And until we can get on the same page about that, because that’s the bedrock. Until we can get on the same page about that we can never begin to explore together or with the help about why we’re doing the things that we’re doing, about what we’re actually fighting for, what we’re trying to accomplish in our attempts to dominate. Until we can get on the same page it says, I am in covenant with you. You are a part of me. I am a part of you. We have this household that we’ve formed together that we’re tearing down brick by brick. This isn’t going to work. We have to do something different. This is not going to work until we can begin to practice what Jesus commanded us. Forgiveness. It’s not going to work. So, maybe it’s time to put down our weapons, all of the soft spots that we know about each other that we constantly go after that simply…I mean…when we hurt each other we’re hurting ourselves. It’s not going to work. I remember when I was a little boy, probably younger even than my son, Ezekiel, who’s five. And my mom was giving me a bath. And I’m just a little kid and I peed in the tub. And she told me, don’t do that. That’s like peeing on yourself. That’s exactly what we do we go to war with each other inside of our own homes. There is no upper hand to get. We’re one. We’re in this together. We’re in covenant. There isn’t anything to win. Attacking our spouse is like attacking our self and it won’t work. It won’t work out in the end, which isn’t to say that there are never any difficult conversations in relationships. There are plenty of them, but it’s how we go in. If we bring the strong artillery and the show of force in and were just, like, aimed at each other, that’s not going to get anywhere. We see in Jesus a person who always looks for the story behind the story, the plot, what’s really going on and he begins to speak to what’s really going on. And when we can have those conversations, ones where we know that we are in this together and we’re not holding this over each other, we’re practicing forgiveness, and we’re trying to find the path together forward, well, then all things are possible.

Prayer:

Father, we invite You into our relationships, our marriages, the work of becoming one, the work of being in a covenant. And even as we see in the book of Leviticus, all of the work of being in a covenant as a people, we see that this this comes down into our own lives. It’s work. To be in covenant with You, it requires daily, moment by moment surrender. Its work to be in a covenant with our spouse. It’s daily moment by moment surrender to Your leadership. And, so, we invite You. We have lots of conversations that we need to have. There’s all kinds of stuff going on. Sometimes it’s like such thick dense forest we don’t even know how to get in there. And we wouldn’t know where to begin to weed out and cut, but You do. You do. And, so, we surrender ourselves to Your Holy Spirit. We’re asking You to speak God. Show us where to tread and where not to. Show us how to move in this direction because a house divided against itself will not last and we believe You. So, come, Holy Spirit, and show us how not to be divided against ourselves. We pray this in Jesus’ name. Amen.

I Feel The Love Between Us

Baby this isn’t like young love

No, this is like an underground river

Flowing over iron and iron

Shaping all the takers and givers

I feel the love between us

We just walked into some history

You can’t ignore a beautiful past

Full of redemption and mystery

Holding up the things that will last

I feel the love between us

Love is a diamond hidden in mountains

Covered in danger and dirt

I’m on the outside digging and digging

I’ve seen and I know what it’s worth

Love is a diamond hidden in mountains

Covered in danger and dirt

I’m on the outside digging and digging

I’ve seen and I know what it’s worth

Baby this isn’t like young love

No this is like an underground river

I feel the love between us

The Daily Audio Bible Reading for Sunday February 18, 2018 (NIV)

Leviticus 6:1-7:27

For Sins against the Lord’s People

[a]The Lord spoke to Moses, “If any of you sin against the Lord by failing to do your duty, if you lie to your neighbor about something you were supposed to take care of or if you lie about something stolen or seized from your neighbor, you are sinning and will be guilty. If you find something that someone lost and lie about it under oath, or commit any other sin like this, you are sinning and will be guilty. Return what you stole or seized, what you were supposed to take care of, the lost item you found, or whatever it was that you swore falsely about. Pay it back in full plus one-fifth more. Give it back to its owner on the day you bring your guilt offering. Then bring the Lord your guilt offering, a ram that has no defects or its value in money. Bring it to the priest. So the priest will make peace with the Lord. Then you will be forgiven for whatever you did that made you guilty.”

Instructions for Taking Care of the Fire

The Lord spoke to Moses, “Command Aaron and his sons: These are the instructions for the burnt offering that stays on the altar overnight while the altar fire is kept burning.

10 “The priest must put on his linen clothes, including his linen undergarments. Then he will remove the ashes left on the altar from the fire that consumed the burnt offering and will put them next to the altar. 11 Then he will take off these clothes and put on some others. He will take the ashes to a clean place outside the camp. 12 The fire must always be burning on the altar. It must never go out. The priest will burn wood on it every morning. He will lay the burnt offering on the fire and burn the fat of the fellowship offering. 13 The fire must always be burning on the altar. It must never go out.

The Grain Offering from the People

14 “These are the instructions for the grain offering. Aaron’s sons must bring it into the Lord’s presence in front of the altar. 15 One of them will remove a handful of flour from the grain offering, together with the olive oil and all the incense. He will burn it on the altar as a reminder. It is a soothing aroma to the Lord. 16 Aaron and his sons will eat the rest of it. They will eat unleavened bread in a holy place, in the courtyard of the tent of meeting. 17 Don’t use yeast in baking the bread. I have given it to them as their share from the offerings by fire made to me. It is very holy like the offering for sin and the guilt offering. 18 Every male descendant of Aaron may eat it. It is a permanent law for generations to come regarding the offering by fire to the Lord. Everyone who touches it will become holy.”

Special Grain Offerings from the Priests

19 The Lord spoke to Moses, 20 “This is the offering that Aaron and his sons must bring to the Lord on the day he is anointed—eight cups of flour. They must do this every day. He must offer half of it in the morning and half in the evening. 21 Prepare it in a frying pan with olive oil, mixing it well. Offer baked pieces of the grain offering as a soothing aroma to the Lord. 22 Aaron’s son who is anointed to take his place as priest will prepare it. This is a permanent law of the Lord: It must be completely burned. 23 Every grain offering made by a priest must be completely burned. It must not be eaten.”

Instructions for the Offering for Sin

24 The Lord spoke to Moses, 25 “Tell Aaron and his sons: These are the instructions for the offering for sin. The offering for sin must be slaughtered in the Lord’s presence in the same place where the burnt offering is slaughtered. It is very holy. 26 The priest who makes the offering for sin will eat it in a holy place, in the courtyard of the tent of meeting. 27 Anything that touches its meat will be holy. If blood gets on someone’s clothes, he must wash them in a holy place. 28 Any piece of pottery in which the offering for sin is cooked must be broken into pieces. Any copper kettle in which the offering for sin is cooked must be scoured and rinsed with water. 29 Any male among the priests may eat the offering for sin. It is very holy. 30 Any offering for sin must not be eaten if some of the blood was brought into the holy place in the tent of meeting to make peace with the Lord. It must be burned.”

Instructions for the Guilt Offering

The Lord continued, “These are the instructions for the guilt offering. It is very holy. It must be slaughtered in the same place where the burnt offering is slaughtered. A priest will throw the blood against the altar on all sides. He will offer all the fat, the fat from the tail, the fat covering the internal organs, and the two kidneys with the fat on them. He will also remove the lobe of the liver along with the kidneys. The priest will burn them on the altar. It is a guilt offering by fire to the Lord. Any male among the priests may eat it. It will be eaten in a holy place. It is very holy.

“The same instructions apply to the offering for sin and the guilt offering. Both offerings belong to the priest to make peace with the Lord. The skin of the burnt offering belongs to the priest who sacrifices it. Every grain offering, whether baked in an oven or prepared in a skillet or a frying pan, belongs to the priest who offers it. 10 Every grain offering, whether mixed with olive oil or dry, will be shared equally by all of Aaron’s sons.

Instructions for the Fellowship Offering of Thanksgiving

11 “These are the instructions for the fellowship offering that you must bring to the Lord. 12 If you offer it as a thank offering, you must also bring rings of unleavened bread mixed with olive oil, wafers of unleavened bread brushed with olive oil, and loaves made from flour mixed well with olive oil. 13 In addition to these rings of bread, you must bring bread with yeast along with your fellowship offering of thanksgiving. 14 From every offering you must bring one loaf to the Lord as a special contribution. It will belong to the priest who throws the blood of the fellowship offering.

15 “The meat from your fellowship offering of thanksgiving must be eaten on the day it is offered. Never leave any of it until morning.

Instructions for Other Fellowship Offerings

16 “If your sacrificial offering is something you vowed or a freewill offering, it must be eaten the day you offer it or the next day. 17 However, on the third day any meat left over from the sacrifice must be burned. 18 You will not be accepted if any meat from the fellowship offering is eaten on the third day. You will not receive credit for it. It is repulsive to God. The person who eats any of it must be punished.

19 “Meat that touches anything unclean must not be eaten. It must be burned. Anyone who is clean may eat from these sacrifices. 20 Those who eat meat from the Lord’s fellowship offering while unclean must be excluded from the people. 21 Those who touch anything unclean, human or animal, or any other disgusting uncleanness and still eat the Lord’s fellowship offering must be excluded from the people.”

No Fat or Blood May Be Eaten

22 The Lord spoke to Moses, 23 “Tell the Israelites: Never eat any fat from bulls, sheep, or goats. 24 The fat from an animal that dies naturally or is killed by wild animals you may use for any other purpose, but you must never eat it. 25 Those who eat the fat from an animal which they sacrificed by fire to the Lord must be excluded from the people.

26 “Never eat the blood of any bird or animal no matter where you live. 27 Those who eat any blood must be excluded from the people.”

Mark 3:7-30

Many People Are Cured(A)

Jesus left with his disciples for the Sea of Galilee. A large crowd from Galilee, Judea, Jerusalem, Idumea, and from across the Jordan River, and from around Tyre and Sidon followed him. They came to him because they had heard about everything he was doing. Jesus told his disciples to have a boat ready so that the crowd would not crush him. 10 He had cured so many that everyone with a disease rushed up to him in order to touch him. 11 Whenever people with evil spirits saw him, they would fall down in front of him and shout, “You are the Son of God!” 12 He gave them orders not to tell people who he was.

Jesus Appoints Twelve Apostles(B)

13 Jesus went up a mountain, called those whom he wanted, and they came to him. 14 He appointed twelve whom he called apostles.[a] They were to accompany him and to be sent out by him to spread the Good News. 15 They also had the authority to force demons out of people.

16 He appointed these twelve: Simon (whom Jesus named Peter), 17 James and his brother John (Zebedee’s sons whom Jesus named Boanerges, which means “Thunderbolts”), 18 Andrew, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James (son of Alphaeus), Thaddaeus, Simon the Zealot, 19 and Judas Iscariot (who later betrayed Jesus).

Jesus Is Accused of Working with Beelzebul(C)

20 Then Jesus went home. Another crowd gathered so that Jesus and his disciples could not even eat. 21 When his family heard about it, they went to get him. They said, “He’s out of his mind!”

22 The experts in Moses’ Teachings who had come from Jerusalem said, “Beelzebul is in him,” and “He forces demons out of people with the help of the ruler of demons.”

23 Jesus called them together and used this illustration: “How can Satan force out Satan? 24 If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot last. 25 And if a household is divided against itself, that household will not last. 26 So if Satan rebels against himself and is divided, he cannot last. That will be the end of him.

27 “No one can go into a strong man’s house and steal his property. First he must tie up the strong man. Then he can go through the strong man’s house and steal his property.

28 “I can guarantee this truth: People will be forgiven for any sin or curse. 29 But whoever curses the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven. He is guilty of an everlasting sin.” 30 Jesus said this because the experts in Moses’ Teachings had said that he had an evil spirit.

Psalm 37:1-11

Do not be preoccupied with evildoers.
Do not envy those who do wicked things.
They will quickly dry up like grass
and wither away like green plants.
Trust the Lord, and do good things.
Live in the land, and practice being faithful.
Be happy with the Lord,
and he will give you the desires of your heart.
Entrust your ways to the Lord.
Trust him, and he will act on your behalf.
He will make your righteousness shine like a light,
your just cause like the noonday sun.
Surrender yourself to the Lord, and wait patiently for him.
Do not be preoccupied with an evildoer who succeeds in his way
when he carries out his schemes.
Let go of anger, and leave rage behind.
Do not be preoccupied.
It only leads to evil.
Evildoers will be cut off from their inheritance,
but those who wait with hope for the Lord will inherit the land.

10 In a little while a wicked person will vanish.
Then you can carefully examine where he was,
but there will be no trace of him.
11 Oppressed people will inherit the land
and will enjoy unlimited peace.

Proverbs 10:3-4

The Lord will not allow a righteous person to starve,
but he intentionally ignores the desires of a wicked person.

Lazy hands bring poverty,
but hard-working hands bring riches.

Leviticus 4:1-5:19, Mark 2:13-3:6, Psalms 36:1-12, Proverbs 10:1-2

Today is the 17th day of February. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I’m Brian. It’s great to be here with you as we get ready to close down another week. And as we get ready to take the journey into the land of the Bible. And I’ll talk about that a little bit at the end, but we are at the beginning. So, let’s dive in and take the next step through the Scriptures. We’re reading from the Contemporary English Version this week, which is today. Leviticus chapters 4 and 5.

Prayer:

Father, we thank You for Your word. And we thank You for all that You have spoken to us through Your word this week. And this week we passed through the center of this month and we’re moving right along. We also entered into this season of Lent, where we are focusing our attention on what it cost to bring salvation to the human race, what it cost to give us eternal life. And as we do that, our heart opens to You. We trust You. We love You. We give ourselves to You every moment of the day, body, mind, and  Spirit. And we invite You to move things in our lives. Reveal to us things that need to be weeded out of our lives. Show us the things that need to be re-ordered in our lives. We love You, Father. Your kindness and Your faithfulness to us are unspeakably good. And we trust You. And we invite You into the rest of this day. Come, Holy Spirit, we pray. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Announcements:

dailyaudiobible.com is the website, it’s home base, it’s where you find out what’s going on around here.

So, mostly, we’re getting prepared, prepared for the next couple of weeks that we’ll be out of the country and moving around the land of the Bible. So, some of us left today to just get things in order on the other side. I’ll be heading over in the morning. So, this is definitely a time for prayer, travel, stamina, health, technology. I mean, we’ll be moving all over that land. And the Daily Audio Bible will go on every single day no matter where we are, which has been the case all along for all of these, well, twelve plus years now. But I have been in lots of situations where it’s pretty dicey. So, we definitely pray over technology. We definitely pray over everything necessary to do what we’re going to do. Thank you for your prayers, as well. We’re going to have a great time, whether in person or virtually. And I’ve mentioned where we’ll be posting pictures and videos and stuff, so at the Daily Audio Bible Facebook page. facebook.com/dailyaudiobible or the Daily Audio Bible Instagram page. Just search for Daily Audio Bible  and we will make this as interactive as possible.  I’ll be talking on the Daily Audio Bible each day about where we’ve been, what we’ve been thinking, and seeing, and doing and we’ll be posting pictures. And, so you can just follow right along and be a part of the trip. And, so many of the places that we’ve already encountered in the Bible are places that we’ll be visiting so you’ll be able to just, kind of, connect to these stories that we’re moving our way through. So, it’s always been a beautiful time for the Daily Audio Bible community.

The other thing that’s coming up is in April, the More Gathering for women. Our annual women’s conference that we hold in the mountains of Georgia just outside of Atlanta about an hour. And that is also something that is profoundly beautiful. So, if that’s been something that’s kind of sitting there in your heart, you can check that out. moregathering.com is the website and all of the details that you would want to know can be found there. And we’ll look forward to that in the springtime when new life begins to come back to the South.

If you want to partner with the Daily Audio Bible, you can do that at dailyaudiobible.com.  There’s a link. It’s on the homepage. I cannot thank you enough. Never will be able to. And that’s it for today. I’m Brian I love you and I’ll be waiting for you here tomorrow.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Hi Daily Audio Bible family. This is my first call. I’m a new listener and have been listening since the beginning of the year. I traded watching television while I am on the elliptical for listening to this and boy what a great trade-off it was. The reason for my call today is a prayer request for a family member of mine who is facing an unplanned pregnancy. She is a single mother of two already. This would be her third child. The father of this child committed suicide and it was a very, very difficult situation for her. She is heavily contemplating giving this child away for open adoption. So, we just praise the Lord that she’s chosen to give this child life. Very hard decision for her. But I just pray that, ask for prayer, that she would have God’s direction on what she should do. This is a very, very difficult situation. I can’t imagine. So please just pray for her, lift her up. There are many things in her life God needs to heal. But this is pressing in. Baby is due coming up in June. Thank you so much family. Love you all and I do pray for all the requests as I listen each day. Thank you.

Hi Daily Audio Bible family this is Greg calling from Kansas City. I’m a first-time caller. My wife’s been listening for many years and I’ve been listening for two years now. I’m calling to ask for prayer for my brother Doug. He was diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer a month or so ago. And, so, it’s a pretty serious diagnosis. But I do believe in the power of prayer and I believe the more people that are praying for him along with God’s intervention he can be healed. So, would you join me in praying for my brother Doug, that God would heal him from this cancer. And he’s a man of God. And we would just like for him to be around a little more. So, thank you and God bless.

Hey everybody. It’s Margo from Australia. I have been listening to the community prayer line. And I don’t usually ring in and about specific things I hear, but I just really wanted to ring in and say, I just heard Pelham. And I know, you know, we’ve all been really praying for you Pelham, but I just wanted to say, the current stress and strain that you are under at the moment, with your finances, is going to be putting so much stress on your marriage relationship. And I just want to say, I’ve been there and you will come through this. What’s really important is that you stand by each other side. You will always have more fights when you under stress. And I’ve been there. I’ve been married 25 years this year and I can honestly say that I’ve got the most beautiful marriage I know of. Honestly, it is just the most wonderful relationship. And that is…the only reason…is because of our commitment. We decided early on…well…when we married…due to…really…our Christian faith…we do not believe in divorce. We had the worst problem to the point where I would’ve loved to leave him. I wished that he would go and have an affair so I would have biblical grounds to divorce him. But we decided we were committed and we came through that. Now what we have is bordering on ideal in our relationship and our love. So, don’t let the strain of your situation ruin your marriage. You stay committed. You never mentioned separation. You never mentioned the D word. Of course, you’re not even allowed to say that word. Hang in there. It will get better and you will be so grateful in the end that you stood by each other and you didn’t give up. You go for it brother. You’re going to be great in your going to get through this.

Good morning DABber family. This is Bob from Cincinnati Ohio. I am calling, it’s February 12th now. And you know __ I thought about this earlier. But, happy Valentine’s Day to all of you. I just wanted to say I love you all. I love listening to you and I love praying for you and just having joys with you. It’s just spectacular. Brian, I love the fact that you did the Sneezing Jesus. Our church actually did a small group study and we had a very good turnout for it. So, all that said I do have a prayer request. I will be going before the district committee for ordaining ministries February 28th. And I would love to have as many people praying at 9:30 AM, wherever you are, for that meeting and just that the Lord’s presence can be there stronger than anyone’s ever felt it. I seem to have a problem with them every once in a while, just, I’m extremely honest and I also don’t interview well. So, I know the things that they want to know but it just doesn’t come out all the time. So, I ask that you just pray that it just flows of the me this time without any problems. And if everything goes well then I’ll be recommended to go to licensing school and I should be a pastor this year. So, if you would just please lift me up with that and I will continue to pray for all of you. I love you all. Again, happy Valentine’s Day. Bye.

Father God, we lift up the DAB trip to Israel this year. Father God thank You for all of those who are going. I pray Lord that You’d be preparing their hearts for what’s about to happen and that You’d be getting them there safely and they’ll have the most awesome time in Israel just seeing where the Bible happened. Father God, so be blessing them greatly Lord. I pray Lord that You would be in all of technology of the DAB stuff as Brian continues to read the Bible for us and takes all with him to the promise land. Father God, I pray for those of us who are left behind. I know we will go virtually but I’d love to one day go there Lord and just to see we are all this happened. But Lord, in Your time. But just Lord, we do pray for safety for those going and just pray for all logistics, that the hotel stays will go well, the food be good, transport will all work out. Just be at work. We pray for Your calm presence and peace, especially in all the panic and hustle of getting ready. Lord may Your name be praised during this visit. May Your name be glorified. And I pray that You would just be real to everyone there. And that they would know the peace of You in all of it, despite what might be happening around them. Bless it greatly Lord in Jesus precious and holy name. Amen. It’s Mikayla from Gloucester in the UK or Beloved by Him. Monday, I need to __ . I hope You guys are having to do wherever You are. But yeah, Israel, it’s amazing. I’m actually going to watch the promised land to get myself in the right space for that. Bye.

Got to keep pushing. Got to keep trying. Gotta keep reaching. Gotta keep grinding. Gotta keep climbing though the mountain is high and stay focused on the Son through the tears I cry, cause even though it’s midnight the Son sits high. And rain may fall in life’s storms but the sun still shines. A broken vessel that can hold any sand at any time, but the battle is the Lords and the victories mine. I said the battle is the Lords and the victories mine. He that has an ear to hear let him listen and be taught. Plans of the enemy are brought to not by God’s purpose. So, check out to be taught as I restate, reiterate, recapitulate or how about I just go on and testify about the most high and His great greatness. As is great great is not wasted yes it’s poured out upon me. I, the proverbial prodigal from the pig pen to the palace. Supernaturally defining all of that which is naturally logical like the last shall be the first or the tail will be the head or the king born in a manager or the likely traveler I got from the three things Jesus once said from the multitude that was fed on a few fish and some bread for the whole universe that came into being from three words the Father said, let there be, and then there was, just like he said it. Now that’s real spoken word. God said it and that’s __. I’m going to stop right there. Blind Tony, what’s up brother? It’s Tucson. Look, we exchanged emails a while back and you encouraged me man, while I was going through some things and that’s a piece of a poem I wrote. Some time ago His Holy Spirit was reminding me that the battle belongs to God no matter what’s going on. And when I heard about the cancer coming back I thought I’d take a minute to reach out and encourage you the same way you encouraged me and so many others. Keep pushing brother and keep speaking the word of God into your situation because we know that he’s a healer and when God’s word comes into the situation it brings forth light. So, I’m praying with you man. I’ll send you the email so you can listen to it or check out the rest of that at your leisure. Peace and love brother. Keep standing. Keep writing. And keep sending us those great words man. We love you. God bless.

Leviticus 1:1-3:17, Mark 1:29-2:12, Psalms 35:17-28, Proverbs 9:13-18

Today is the 16th day of February. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I’m Brian. And it’s great to be here with you like it is every day as we continue to take steps forward through the Scriptures. And we began the Gospel of Mark yesterday, but we also concluded the book of Exodus. So, if you can believe it, we’ve already completed two books in the Old Testament and one in the new since we began our journey just, what, six weeks ago?

Commentary:

So, today in the Old Testament we will begin the book of Leviticus. And Leviticus is the third book of the Bible. The third book of the Pentateuch. And, of course, it was written for the children of Israel. We’re in the middle of the desert at this point in the story, and God is establishing the terms of the covenant between himself and the nation of Israel and He’s shaping the culture that will govern those people. It’s been about a year now since they’ve left Egypt and the law is being given. And as we pay close attention, we’ll see this sort of sub-theme or a theme that emerges out of the laws and statues. And that is that fellowship, intimacy, collaboration, relationship with God will come through holiness. Holiness is a huge thing. God tells them, I am holy, therefore you will be holy. And, of course, holy means being set apart. Being set apart to God. God is saying, if we’re going commune together and enjoy fellowship with one another, it will be through holiness. So, if you just read Leviticus at face value, you find a lot of blood in this book because there’s a lot of animal sacrifice in it. If you approach the Old Testament, a work inspired thousands of years ago, from the perspective of the culture you live in right now. Right? If you back read your culture into it, it’s going seem somewhat barbaric, maybe hopelessly antiquated, possibly irrelevant. It’s not, though. You may wonder why they would just start sacrificing animals and why God would want such a thing and to find the answer, we’ll have to go back to the beginning. Six weeks ago, we read the account of the Garden of Eden and Adam and Eve’s fall. And from that moment, all of mankind was separated from God and worthy of death, spiritually and physically. And when God came into the garden in the cool of the evening looking for Adam and Eve, they hid. And they eventually told God they were afraid because they were naked. What God does in that moment is telling. He covers them with the skins of animals. So, it was God who set this precedent of atonement and covering. It cost something to cover man and woman. It cost the life of an animal. And we live in a culture after Christ where atoning sacrifice is no longer required. However, we just read the account of the crucifixion in Matthew. Right? And this all goes along with what we were talking about just a couple of days ago as we moved into the season of Lent. These things represent something, to tie us and keep us focused on the story. So, we read in Matthew the account of Jesus death. It’s barbaric. It’s ugly. It’s bloody. And it’s terribly sad. The more that we fall in love with Christ, the more that we see Jesus at work in our lives, we realize that this didn’t happen to someone we don’t know. This happened to our closest friend and ally. Jesus’ sacrifice was once and for all. But the children of Israel do not have that luxury. God is showing the children of Israel that to cover their sin comes at a great cost, and requires the shedding of blood. It comes at a great price. So, we’ll see God sowing this into the fabric of the culture he’s establishing.  We’ll see the burnt offering, the grain offering, the peace offering, the sin offering, the trespass offering, and how they’re to be given. We’ll see the way things are to be consecrated and the consecration of priests and priests’ families. We’ll learn what is considered clean and unclean in this culture. And we’ll discover the different festivals or feasts that must be observed, and blessings and cursing’s, all against the backdrop of the absolute and utter holiness and sovereignty of the Lord. And maybe you’ve been on this path before. You’ve started to read your Bible at the beginning of the year and you get about to this point and this is kind of where you taper off because you’re thinking, I don’t really relate to this. Embrace it. You’re witnessing the establishment of a culture by a sovereign, holy, God revealing to a fallen man the great price of sin and its consequences juxtaposed against God’s holiness. And this is all happening in the harshness of desert wastelands, where there is no, you know, there is no fast food down the street that you can just drive through and get a meal. There is no shopping mall that you can just go get whatever supplies that you want or need. They didn’t have any way to re-supply. This is where we find ourselves, in the desert, as we begin the book of Leviticus. And today we’ll read the first three chapters of the book of Leviticus, beginning with chapter 1.

Prayer:

Thank You, Father, for Your Word. And thank You as we keep taking steps forward we encounter new books, new contexts, new things to learn about, new things to plant in the soil of our hearts. And, so, we’ve just gotten into the book of Mark. We’ve just begun the book of Leviticus. And we invite Your Holy Spirit to speak to us, to plant the fruit of the Spirit in our lives. We want a hundred-fold crop of the fruit of the Spirit. That’s what we’re asking for, but we know this will require our participation. You will provide the sun, You will provide the rain, You will provide the nourishment in the soil of our lives, but You also expect us to collaborate, to weed, to tend, to nurture. So, come Holy Spirit as we continue to move forward and deeper into Your word. Come Jesus, we pray. In Your name we ask. Amen.

Announcements:

dailyaudiobible.com is the website, it’s home base, it’s where you find what’s going on around here.

And what’s really immediate on the radar is that we will be heading toward Israel. I actually made a mistake. Part of the team is heading tomorrow, so we certainly do have to pray. I don’t have to leave until Sunday morning. But definitely prayers over this. There’s just a lot of moving parts, as I mentioned before. There’s jet lag that’s involved, there’s logistics that are involved, a lot of them. And there’s going be a lot of us involved. So, the prayers are for all of that - the transportation, technology, stamina, energy, health, all of this. And as I have mentioned, if you want to stay connected to this, then just get familiar with the Daily Audio Bible Facebook page, which is facebook.com/dailyaudiobible or the Daily Audio Bible Instagram page because we’ll be posting. Like, when we visit somewhere, we’ll be posting pictures of it.  If we have strong enough Internet, then we’ll even be posting videos. And then about halfway through the trip, we’ll be doing a Facebook Live from the Sea of Galilee area. So, I’ll be talking about all of this, but you’re going one way or the other. You’re going. I’m taking you in my suitcase. Whether this is virtual or you’re going in person, we’re going do this together, and it’s incredible to just watch the whole Bible begin to take shape as it’s rooted in its geography. So, it’s exciting that we can do this as a community and I’m looking forward to it very much.

The other thing that’s coming up on the radar is the More Gathering for women. And that will take place in early April. And we do this each year for the sisters in our community, and what a sisterhood it has become over the years. So, if you’re in a place in your life where you’re feeling there has got to be more than this, there’s got to be. I know there is, I can feel it, I just don’t know how to name it. I just don’t know what it looks like, what it’s shaped like, then the More gathering is for you. And you may think, well, I want to go but I don’t want to go alone, trust me. You will not feel alone. You will be among sisters from the Daily Audio Bible community. We all have this in common.  It’s an immediate recognition. Immediate. And lifelong friendships have been formed at the More Gatherings. Friends who have stayed together, who are continuing to be friends for years and years and years. It’s a beautiful thing. So, if that raises something in you, if that brings something up in you that you want to explore, then you can find out more about it at moregathering.com. And April will be here before you know it. Right? It was just New Year’s Day. Right? Just a couple of days ago? But, here we are, several books into the Bible and six weeks later. It just moves fast. April will be here before you know it. So, check it out. Make plans to come if you can. You won’t regret it - moregathering.com.

If you want to partner with the Daily Audio Bible and be a part of keeping the global campfire that is our community burning strong and bright, then thank you humbly and truly from our hearts for your partnership. We can’t do this if we don’t do it together. And what we’ve done, we’ve done together. Thank you for your partnership. There’s a link on the homepage of dailyaudiobible.com. If you’re using the Daily Audio Bible app, you can press the Dive button in the upper right-hand corner or, if you prefer, the mailing address is PO Box 1996, Spring Hill, Tennessee, 37174.

And as always if you have a prayer request or comment 877-942-4253 is the number to dial.

And that’s it for today. I’m Brian I love you and I’ll be waiting for you here tomorrow.

My boyfriend and I broke up do to various reasons but I believe it was God’s plan for us, for it to able to happen because at the time I was able to meet, well actually, Mark S. from Sydney reached out to me, which was such a prayer, answered a prayer. And I was also able to connect with a few other DABbers in Sydney. And what’s amazing is that I was able to connect with a guy called Chris who has been listening for years and he turned out to be a husband to my favorite art teacher in high school. So, praise God for that and for the connections that God is showing me through this community. But I just want to continue to ask for prayer as I deal with this breakup. It ended very badly and I was very much hurt, what was spoke to me. And I know that God has a better plan for my life and I trust Him. And I also just want to thank you for Christie who also reached out to me in New York as I’ve been able to read some of her recommended books. That is helping me to get over this breakup as well. So, I just want to thank you all so much for your prayers. And I’m also praying for you all and I’m __ you to praise God and thank God as well for His faithfulness and continuing to pray and uplift each other. So, thank you so much. I will call in again. I have a 16-year-old I worry about every day and I just ask that you pray for me and my family. I called in about three years ago when my youngest son in Austin was hit by an Amtrak train. And God performed a miracle. He survived. And when he was on the tracks he heard a voice saying you will be okay. As I was waiting in his hospital room, broken and crying, I was listening to the Daily Audio Bible and I heard Sinner praying for my son and Drew from the Bay Area. Sinner, I have missed your voice. I look forward to your calls. I love to hear them. I haven’t heard from you for a while. There’s someone name David from Kansas. It kind of sounds like you. But I would love to hear from you Sinner. I also called in for my very best friend Cindy, who is fighting cancer. And God is working a miracle on her to. Her tumors have all gotten smaller with her treatments. Her and her devoted husband John are now regular listeners of the Daily Audio Bible and I am so blessed to have them as my friends. And I just requested that you pray for Cindy as she continues to do her treatments. I pray for all of you every time I listen, especially for Blind Tony. Thank you and have a good day.

Hi family this is Viola from Maryland. It’s been so long. How are you all doing? Brian and Jill God bless you. Brian, I’m behind, you know, because I’m still in school. Father Lord I just pray for your daughter Gene. I pray that you would touch her body from the crown of her head to the soles of her feet. I pray that you would heal her in the name of Jesus, that you would __ …

I’m calling about your travel Brian. I felt we should all be praying as a group for you. And, so, you’re probably going to be on the plane by the time this one is getting aired, but I’d just like to say, dear Lord please watch over Brian, his family, and his extended family through the community of the Daily Audio Bible, that the travel will be safe and prosperous, not for anything but Your glory in the end Lord. In Jesus name I pray. Amen.

Yeah, this is Blind Tony with a message for those who feel their back is up against the wall, they can’t see their way out. You’ve got to walk on by faith. God is faithful and He will show up. He will bring you out. You got a hold on. Walk on by faith.

There were men in the Bible who were clearly God’s own
they were considered his friend and were intimately known
but still they had troubles, fears and great doubts
but they walked on by faith and God brought them out
Abraham believed and left his own land
He went all the way to Canaan led by God’s hand
And as soon as he got there, there was famine and drought
So he surged on through Egypt until God brought about
Then he returned and was surrounded by war
His nephew Lot got captured when five kings fought four
And right after that he got tested again
And even though God was still with him his problems didn’t end
He had problems with Hagar and Ishmael and Sarah too
God asked him to sacrifice his son Isaac just to prove his love was true
But though he had troubles fears and great doubt
He walked on by faith until God brought him out
Gideon was another one __ week in fear
Afraid of the Midianites but God still called him dear

You get a walk on by faith God will bring you out. blindtony1016@gmail.com. Alright. Thank you for your prayers, your love and your support. And, once again, I’d like to thank Brian and his family. Haven’t heard from Jill lately. I guess I’ll hear from her soon, when Brian goes to the holy land. Anyway. Thank you for this wonderful podcast for God’s Holy Spirit the flow. Keep it flown’ ya’ll. Alright. Bye-bye.

Leviticus 4-5

Sacrifices for Sin

The Lord told Moses to say to the community of Israel:

Offer a sacrifice to ask forgiveness when you sin by accidentally doing something I have told you not to do.

When the High Priest Sins

The Lord said:

When the high priest sins, he makes everyone else guilty too. And so, he must sacrifice a young bull that has nothing wrong with it. The priest will lead the bull to the entrance of the sacred tent, lay his hand on its head, and kill it there. He will take a bowl of the blood inside the tent, dip a finger in the blood, and sprinkle some of it seven times toward the sacred chest behind the curtain. Then, in my presence, he will smear some of the blood on each of the four corners of the incense altar, before pouring out the rest at the foot of the bronze altar[a] near the entrance to the tent.

8-10 The priest will remove the fat from the bull, just as he does when he sacrifices a bull to ask my blessing.[b] This includes the fat on the insides, as well as the lower part of the liver and the two kidneys with their fat. He will then send it all up in smoke.

11-12 The skin and flesh of the bull, together with its legs, insides, and the food still in its stomach, are to be taken outside the camp and burned on a wood fire near the ash heap.[c]

When the Whole Nation Sins

The Lord said:

13 When the nation of Israel disobeys me without meaning to, the whole nation is still guilty. 14 Once you realize what has happened, you must sacrifice a young bull to ask my forgiveness. Lead the bull to the entrance of the sacred tent, 15 where your tribal leaders will lay their hands on its head, before having it killed in my presence.

16 The priest will take a bowl of the animal’s blood inside the sacred tent, 17 dip a finger in the blood, and sprinkle some of it seven times toward the sacred chest behind the curtain. 18 Then, in my presence, he must smear some of the blood on each of the four corners of the incense altar, before pouring out the rest at the foot of the bronze altar[d] near the entrance to the tent. 19-21 After this, the priest will remove the fat from the bull and send it up in smoke on the altar. Finally, he will burn its remains outside the camp, just as he did with the other bull. By this sacrifice the sin of the whole nation will be forgiven.

When a Tribal Leader Sins

The Lord God said:

22 Any tribal leader who disobeys me without meaning to is still guilty. 23 As soon as the leader realizes what has happened, he must sacrifice a goat[e] that has nothing wrong with it. 24 This is a sacrifice for sin. So he will lay his hand on the animal’s head, before having it killed in my presence at the north side of the bronze altar. 25 The priest will dip a finger in the blood, smear some of it on each of the four corners of the altar, and pour out the rest at the foot of the altar. 26 Then he must send all of the fat up in smoke, just as he does when a sacrifice is offered to ask my blessing.[f] By this sacrifice the leader’s sin will be forgiven.

When Ordinary People Sin

The Lord said:

27 When any of you ordinary people disobey me without meaning to, you are still guilty. 28 As soon as you realize what you have done, you must sacrifice a female goat that has nothing wrong with it. 29 Lead the goat to the north side of the bronze altar and lay your hand on its head, before having it killed. 30 Then a priest will dip a finger in the blood; he will smear some of it on each of the four corners of the altar and pour out the rest at the foot of the altar. 31 After this, the priest will remove all of the fat, just as he does when an animal is sacrificed to ask my blessing.[g] The priest will then send the fat up in smoke with a smell that pleases me. This animal is sacrificed so that I will forgive you ordinary people when you sin.

32 If you offer a lamb instead of a goat as a sacrifice for sin, it must be a female that has nothing wrong with it. 33 Lead the lamb to the altar and lay your hand on its head, before having it killed. 34 The priest will dip a finger in the blood, smear some of it on each of the four corners of the altar, and pour out the rest at the foot of the altar. 35 After this, all of the fat must be removed, just as when an animal is sacrificed to ask my blessing. Then the priest will send it up in smoke to me, together with a food offering, and your sin will be forgiven.

The Lord said:

If you refuse to testify in court about something you saw or know has happened, you have sinned and can be punished.

You are guilty and unfit to worship me, if you accidentally touch the dead body of any kind of unclean animal.

You are guilty if you find out that you have accidentally touched any waste that comes from a human body.

You are guilty the moment you realize that you have made a hasty promise to do something good or bad.

As soon as you discover that you have committed any of these sins, you must confess what you have done. Then you must bring a female sheep or goat to me as the price for your sin. A priest will sacrifice the animal, and you will be forgiven.

If you are poor and cannot afford to bring an animal, you may bring two doves or two pigeons. One of these will be a sacrifice to ask my forgiveness, and the other will be a sacrifice to please me.

Give both birds to the priest, who will offer one as a sacrifice to ask my forgiveness. He will wring its neck without tearing off its head, splatter some of its blood on one side of the bronze altar, and drain out the rest at the foot of the altar. 10 Then he will follow the proper rules for offering the other bird as a sacrifice to please me.

You will be forgiven when the priest offers these sacrifices as the price for your sin.

11 If you are so poor that you cannot afford doves or pigeons, you may bring two pounds of your finest flour. This is a sacrifice to ask my forgiveness, so don’t sprinkle olive oil or sweet-smelling incense on it. 12 Give the flour to a priest, who will scoop up a handful and send it up in smoke together with the other offerings. This is a reminder that all of the flour belongs to me. 13 By offering this sacrifice, the priest pays the price for any of these sins you may have committed. The priest gets the rest of the flour, just as he does with grain sacrifices.

Sacrifices To Make Things Right

14-15 The Lord told Moses what the people must do to make things right when they find out they have cheated the Lord without meaning to:

If this happens, you must either sacrifice a ram that has nothing wrong with it or else pay the price of a ram with the official money used by the priests. 16 In addition, you must pay what you owe plus a fine of twenty percent. Then the priest will offer the ram as a sacrifice to make things right, and you will be forgiven.

17-19 If you break any of my commands without meaning to, you are still guilty, and you can be punished. When you realize what you have done, you must either bring to the priest a ram that has nothing wrong with it or else pay him for one. The priest will then offer it as a sacrifice to make things right, and you will be forgiven.

Mark 2:13-3:6

Jesus Chooses Levi

13 Once again, Jesus went to the shore of Lake Galilee. A large crowd gathered around him, and he taught them. 14 As he walked along, he saw Levi, the son of Alphaeus. Levi was sitting at the place for paying taxes, and Jesus said to him, “Come with me!” So he got up and went with Jesus.

15 Later, Jesus and his disciples were having dinner at Levi’s house.[a] Many tax collectors[b] and other sinners had become followers of Jesus, and they were also guests at the dinner.

16 Some of the teachers of the Law of Moses were Pharisees, and they saw that Jesus was eating with sinners and tax collectors. So they asked his disciples, “Why does he eat with tax collectors and sinners?”

17 Jesus heard them and answered, “Healthy people don’t need a doctor, but sick people do. I didn’t come to invite good people to be my followers. I came to invite sinners.”

People Ask about Going without Eating

18 The followers of John the Baptist and the Pharisees often went without eating.[c] Some people came and asked Jesus, “Why do the followers of John and those of the Pharisees often go without eating, while your disciples never do?”

19 Jesus answered:

The friends of a bridegroom don’t go without eating while he is still with them. 20 But the time will come when he will be taken from them. Then they will go without eating.

21 No one patches old clothes by sewing on a piece of new cloth. The new piece would shrink and tear a bigger hole.

22 No one pours new wine into old wineskins. The wine would swell and burst the old skins.[d] Then the wine would be lost, and the skins would be ruined. New wine must be put into new wineskins.

A Question about the Sabbath

23 One Sabbath Jesus and his disciples were walking through some wheat fields. His disciples were picking grains of wheat as they went along.[e] 24 Some Pharisees asked Jesus, “Why are your disciples picking grain on the Sabbath? They are not supposed to do that!”

25 Jesus answered, “Haven’t you read what David did when he and his followers were hungry and in need? 26 It was during the time of Abiathar the high priest. David went into the house of God and ate the sacred loaves of bread that only priests are allowed to eat. He also gave some to his followers.”

27 Jesus finished by saying, “People were not made for the good of the Sabbath. The Sabbath was made for the good of people. 28 So the Son of Man is Lord over the Sabbath.”

A Man with a Crippled Hand

The next time that Jesus went into the meeting place, a man with a crippled hand was there. The Pharisees[f] wanted to accuse Jesus of doing something wrong, and they kept watching to see if Jesus would heal him on the Sabbath.

Jesus told the man to stand up where everyone could see him. Then he asked, “On the Sabbath should we do good deeds or evil deeds? Should we save someone’s life or destroy it?” But no one said a word.

Jesus was angry as he looked around at the people. Yet he felt sorry for them because they were so stubborn. Then he told the man, “Stretch out your hand.” He did, and his bad hand was healed.

The Pharisees left. And right away they started making plans with Herod’s followers[g] to kill Jesus.

  2. 2.15 tax collectors: These were usually Jewish people who paid the Romans for the right to collect taxes. They were hated by other Jews who thought of them as traitors to their country and to their religion.
  3. 2.18 without eating: The Jewish people sometimes went without eating (also called “fasting”) to show their love for God or to show sorrow for their sins.
  4. 2.22 swell and burst the old skins: While the juice from grapes was becoming wine, it would swell and stretch the skins in which it had been stored. If the skins were old and stiff, they would burst.
  5. 2.23 went along: It was the custom to let hungry travelers pick grains of wheat.
  6. 3.2 Pharisees: The Greek text has “they” (but see verse 6).

Psalm 36

(For the music leader by David, the Lord’s servant.)

Human Sin and God’s Goodness

36 Sinners don’t respect God;
sin is all they think about.
They like themselves too much
to hate their own sins
or even to see them.
They tell deceitful lies,
and they don’t have the sense
to live right.
Those people stay awake,
thinking up mischief,
and they follow the wrong road,
refusing to turn from sin.

Your love is faithful, Lord,
and even the clouds in the sky
can depend on you.
Your decisions are always fair.
They are firm like mountains,
deep like the sea,
and all people and animals
are under your care.

Your love is a treasure,
and everyone finds shelter
in the shadow of your wings.
You give your guests a feast
in your house,
and you serve a tasty drink
that flows like a river.
The life-giving fountain
belongs to you,
and your light gives light
to each of us.

10 Our Lord, keep showing love
to everyone who knows you,
and use your power to save
all whose thoughts please you.
11 Don’t let those proud
and merciless people
kick me around
or chase me away.

12 Look at those wicked people!
They are knocked down,
never to get up again.

Solomon’s Wise Sayings

10 Here are some proverbs
of Solomon:
Children with good sense
make their parents happy,
but foolish children
make them sad.
What you gain by doing evil
won’t help you at all,
but being good[a]
can save you from death.

Leviticus 1-3

1-3 The Lord spoke to Moses from the sacred tent and gave him instructions for the community of Israel to follow when they offered sacrifices.

Sacrifices To Please the Lord

The Lord said:

Sacrifices to please me[a] must be completely burned on the bronze altar.[b]

Bulls or rams or goats[c] are the animals to be used for these sacrifices. If the animal is a bull, it must not have anything wrong with it. Lead it to the entrance of the sacred tent, and I will let you know if it is[d] acceptable to me. Lay your hand on its head, and I will accept the animal as a sacrifice for taking away your sins.

After the bull is killed in my presence, some priests from Aaron’s family will offer its blood to me by splattering it against the four sides of the altar.

Skin the bull and cut it up, while the priests pile wood on the altar fire to make it start blazing. 8-9 Wash the bull’s insides and hind legs, so the priests can lay them on the altar with the head, the fat, and the rest of the animal. A priest will then send all of it up in smoke with a smell that pleases me.

10 If you sacrifice a ram or a goat, it must not have anything wrong with it. 11 Lead the animal to the north side of the altar, where it is to be killed in my presence. Then some of the priests will splatter its blood against the four sides of the altar.

12-13 Cut up the animal and wash its insides and hind legs. A priest will put these parts on the altar with the head, the fat, and the rest of the animal. Then he will send all of it up in smoke with a smell that pleases me.

14 If you offer a bird for this kind of sacrifice, it must be a dove or a pigeon. 15 A priest will take the bird to the bronze altar, where he will wring its neck and put its head on the fire. Then he will drain out its blood on one side of the altar, 16 remove the bird’s craw with what is in it,[e] and throw them on the ash heap at the east side of the altar.[f] 17 Finally, he will take the bird by its wings, tear it partially open,[g] and send it up in smoke with a smell that pleases me.

Sacrifices To Give Thanks to the Lord

The Lord said:

When you offer sacrifices to give thanks to me,[h] you must use only your finest flour. Put it in a dish, sprinkle olive oil and incense on the flour, and take it to the priests from Aaron’s family. One of them will scoop up the incense together with a handful of the flour and oil. Then, to show that the whole offering belongs to me, the priest will lay this part on the bronze altar and send it up in smoke with a smell that pleases me. The rest of this sacrifice is for the priests; it is very holy because it was offered to me.

If you bake bread in an oven for this sacrifice, use only your finest flour, but without any yeast. You may make the flour into a loaf mixed with olive oil, or you may make it into thin wafers and brush them with oil.

If you cook bread in a shallow pan for this sacrifice, use only your finest flour. Mix it with olive oil, but do not use any yeast. Then break the bread into small pieces and sprinkle them with oil. If you cook your bread in a pan with a lid on it, you must also use the finest flour mixed with oil.

You may prepare sacrifices to give thanks in any of these three ways. Bring your sacrifice to a priest, and he will take it to the bronze altar. Then, to show that the whole offering belongs to me, the priest will lay part of it on the altar and send it up in smoke with a smell that pleases me. 10 The rest of this sacrifice is for the priests; it is very holy because it was offered to me.

11 Yeast and honey must never be burned on the altar, so don’t ever mix either of these in a grain sacrifice. 12 You may offer either of them separately,[i] when you present the first part of your harvest to me, but they must never be burned on the altar.

13 Salt is offered when you make an agreement with me, so sprinkle salt on these sacrifices.

14 Freshly cut grain, either roasted or coarsely ground,[j] must be used when you offer the first part of your grain harvest. 15 You must mix in some olive oil and put incense on top, because this is a grain sacrifice. 16 A priest will sprinkle all of the incense and some of the grain and oil on the altar and send them up in smoke to show that the whole offering belongs to me.

Sacrifices To Ask the Lord’s Blessing

The Lord said:

When you offer sacrifices to ask my blessing,[k] you may offer either a bull or a cow, but there must be nothing wrong with the animal. Lead it to the entrance of the sacred tent, lay your hand on its head, and have it killed there. A priest from Aaron’s family will splatter its blood against the four sides of the altar.

Offer all of the fat on the animal’s insides, as well as the lower part of the liver and the two kidneys with their fat. Some of the priests will lay these pieces on the altar and send them up in smoke with a smell that pleases me, together with the sacrifice that is offered to please me.[l]

Instead of a bull or a cow, you may offer any sheep or goat that has nothing wrong with it. If you offer a sheep, you must present it to me at the entrance to the sacred tent. Lay your hand on its head and have it killed there. A priest will then splatter its blood against the four sides of the altar.

Offer the fat on the tail, the tailbone, and the insides, 10 as well as the lower part of the liver and the two kidneys with their fat. 11 One of the priests will lay these pieces on the altar and send them up in smoke as a food offering for me.

12 If you offer a goat, you must also present it to me 13 at the entrance to the sacred tent. Lay your hand on its head and have it killed there. A priest will then splatter its blood against the four sides of the altar.

14 Offer all of the fat on the animal’s insides, 15 as well as the lower part of the liver and the two kidneys with their fat. 16 One of the priests will put these pieces on the altar and send them up in smoke as a food offering with a smell that pleases me.

All fat belongs to me. 17 So you and your descendants must never eat any fat or any blood, not even in the privacy of your own homes.[m] This law will never change.

Footnotes:

  1. 1.1-3 Sacrifices to please me: These sacrifices have traditionally been called “whole burnt offerings” because the whole animal was burned on the altar. A main purpose of such sacrifices was to please the Lord with the smell of the sacrifice, and so in the CEV they are often called “sacrifices to please the Lord.”
  2. 1.1-3 bronze altar: This altar for offering sacrifices was in front of the entrance to the sacred tent; it was made of acacia wood covered with bronze. A smaller altar for offering incense was inside the tent; it was made of acacia wood covered with gold.
  3. 1.1-3 goats: Hebrew “male goats.”
  4. 1.1-3 if it is: Or “if you are.”
  5. 1.16 with what is in it: One possible meaning for the difficult Hebrew text.
  6. 1.16 ash heap at the east side of the altar: Ashes were piled here, then once a day they were taken to the ash heap outside the camp (see 4.11,12; 6.10,11).
  7. 1.17 tear it partially open: Or “tear it open without pulling off the wings.”
  8. 2.1 sacrifices to give thanks to me: These sacrifices have traditionally been called “grain offerings.” A main purpose of such sacrifices was to thank the Lord with a gift of grain, and so in the CEV they are sometimes called “sacrifices to give thanks to the Lord.”
  9. 2.12 You. . . separately: One possible meaning for the difficult Hebrew text.
  10. 2.14 either. . . ground: Or “roasted and coarsely ground.”

Mark 1:29-2:12

Jesus Heals Many People

29 As soon as Jesus left the meeting place with James and John, they went home with Simon and Andrew. 30 When they got there, Jesus was told that Simon’s mother-in-law was sick in bed with fever. 31 Jesus went to her. He took hold of her hand and helped her up. The fever left her, and she served them a meal.

32 That evening after sunset,[a] all who were sick or had demons in them were brought to Jesus. 33 In fact, the whole town gathered around the door of the house. 34 Jesus healed all kinds of terrible diseases and forced out a lot of demons. But the demons knew who he was, and he did not let them speak.

35 Very early the next morning, Jesus got up and went to a place where he could be alone and pray. 36 Simon and the others started looking for him. 37 And when they found him, they said, “Everyone is looking for you!”

38 Jesus replied, “We must go to the nearby towns, so that I can tell the good news to those people. This is why I have come.” 39 Then Jesus went to Jewish meeting places everywhere in Galilee, where he preached and forced out demons.

Jesus Heals a Man

40 A man with leprosy[b] came to Jesus and knelt down.[c] He begged, “You have the power to make me well, if only you wanted to.”

41 Jesus felt sorry for[d] the man. So he put his hand on him and said, “I want to! Now you are well.” 42 At once the man’s leprosy disappeared, and he was well.

43 After Jesus strictly warned the man, he sent him on his way. 44 He said, “Don’t tell anyone about this. Just go and show the priest that you are well. Then take a gift to the temple as Moses commanded, and everyone will know that you have been healed.”[e]

45 The man talked about it so much and told so many people, that Jesus could no longer go openly into a town. He had to stay away from the towns, but people still came to him from everywhere.

Jesus Heals a Crippled Man

Jesus went back to Capernaum, and a few days later people heard that he was at home.[f] Then so many of them came to the house that there wasn’t even standing room left in front of the door.

Jesus was still teaching when four people came up, carrying a crippled man on a mat. But because of the crowd, they could not get him to Jesus. So they made a hole in the roof[g] above him and let the man down in front of everyone.

When Jesus saw how much faith they had, he said to the crippled man, “My friend, your sins are forgiven.”

Some of the teachers of the Law of Moses were sitting there. They started wondering, “Why would he say such a thing? He must think he is God! Only God can forgive sins.”

Right away, Jesus knew what they were thinking, and he said, “Why are you thinking such things? Is it easier for me to tell this crippled man that his sins are forgiven or to tell him to get up and pick up his mat and go on home? 10 I will show you that the Son of Man has the right to forgive sins here on earth.” So Jesus said to the man, 11 “Get up! Pick up your mat and go on home.”

12 The man got right up. He picked up his mat and went out while everyone watched in amazement. They praised God and said, “We have never seen anything like this!”

Footnotes:

  1. 1.32 after sunset: The Sabbath was over, and a new day began at sunset.
  2. 1.40 leprosy: In biblical times the word “leprosy” was used for many different kinds of skin diseases.
  3. 1.40 and knelt down: These words are not in some manuscripts.
  4. 1.41 felt sorry for: Some manuscripts have “was angry with.”
  5. 1.44 everyone will know that you have been healed: People with leprosy had to be examined by a priest and told that they were well (that is, “clean”) before they could once again live a normal life in the Jewish community. The gift that Moses commanded was the sacrifice of some lambs together with flour mixed with olive oil.
  6. 2.1 at home: Or “in the house” (perhaps Simon Peter’s home).
  7. 2.4 roof: In Palestine the houses usually had a flat roof. Stairs on the outside led up to the roof that was made of beams and boards covered with packed earth.

Psalm 35:17-28

17 But all you do is watch!
When will you do something?
Save me from the attack
of those vicious lions.
18 And when your people meet,
I will praise you
and thank you, Lord,
in front of them all.

19 Don’t let my brutal enemies
be glad because of me.
They hate me for no reason.
Don’t let them wink
behind my back.
20 They say hurtful things,
and they lie to people
who want to live in peace.
21 They are quick to accuse me.
They say, “You did it!
We saw you ourselves.”

22 You see everything, Lord!
Please don’t keep silent
or stay so far away.
23 Fight to defend me, Lord God,
24 and prove that I am right
by your standards.
Don’t let them laugh at me
25 or say to each other,
“Now we’ve got what we want!
We’ll gobble him down!”

26 Disappoint and confuse
all who are glad
to see me in trouble,
but disgrace and embarrass
my proud enemies
who say to me,
“You are nothing!”

27 Let all who want me to win
be happy and joyful.
From now on let them say,
“The Lord is wonderful!
God is glad when all goes well
for his servant.”
28 Then I will shout all day,
“Praise the Lord God!
He did what was right.”

Proverbs 9:13-18

A Foolish Invitation

13 Stupidity[a] is reckless,
senseless, and foolish.
14 She sits in front of her house
and on the highest hills
in the town.
15 She shouts to everyone
who passes by,
16 “If you are stupid,
come on inside!”
And to every fool she says,
17 “Stolen water tastes best,
and the food you eat in secret
tastes best of all.”
18 None who listen to Stupidity
understand
that her guests
are as good as dead.

Exodus 39:1-40:38, Mark 1:1-28, Psalms 35:1-16, Proverbs 9:11-12

Today is the 15th day of February. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I am Brian. It’s great to be here with you today to take the next step. So, yesterday was a big day - Valentine’s Day, we talked about the beginning of Lent, finished the book of Matthew yesterday, the first of the Gospels, which will lead us, of course, into the book of Mark when we get to our New Testament reading. So we’ll talk about that when we get there. But first, the law is being given in the wilderness with the children of Israel and Moses and we’ll pick up with that story. We’re reading from the Contemporary English Version this week. Exodus chapter 39 and 40.

Mark:

Okay. So, I mentioned at the beginning that we concluded Matthew’s gospel, which leads us, now, into Mark’s gospel. And we should probably say up front, Mark wasn’t one of the 12 disciples, he wasn’t an apostle. He was rather, mostly, a long-term disciple of Peter. And we first see him show up in the Bible in the book of acts, which, obviously, we haven’t gotten to yet. He’s also known as John Mark and he lived in Jerusalem and came from pretty well-to-do family. His mother’s name was Mary. She had a big house. She had a servant whose name was Rhoda. So, John Mark’s mother, Mary, was one of the earliest of believers and she opened her home to early believers. And church tradition holds that her home may have been the place of the upper room where the Holy Spirit was poured out on the early believers after Jesus ascension. Of course, that’s a church tradition that just goes way back. But it’s not explicit in the Bible, but John mark, or Mark, was around the gospel all his life, even as a boy. The apostle Peter was captured by Herod. And we’ll read about this story little further into the New Testament. And he was going to be executed by Herod who had put other Christians to death. And this seemed to be pleasing the people. So, we plan to execute Peter, but an angel came and sprung Peter from jail. And it was to John Mark’s house, to Mary’s large home, that Peter first came. And all the believers were there praying earnestly for Peter. And that prayer was answered by God, sending an angel to spring Peter from jail. So, Peter comes to John Mark’s house and Rhoda, the servant girl, comes to the door and sees him and slams the door in his face, basically, because she can’t believe it’s Peter. And that’s a story we’ll come to later, but it shows us a little bit about who Mark is. So, John Mark had been around the gospel his whole life. His cousin’s name was Barnabas, who was a dear friend of the apostle Paul. And Mark went with Barnabas and Paul on Paul’s first missionary journey. So, there is a long pedigree with Mark. And church tradition holds that Mark later became a disciple of the apostle Peter and traveled all around the countryside with him and served as an interpreter in Italy, and especially in Rome. And everywhere that Peter went, he was there to share the gospel of Jesus Christ. So, John Mark had heard Peter’s gospel over and over and over everywhere that they would go as Peter was evangelizing. And Mark recalls and remembers this because he’s heard it so many times. And he’s finally asked to write it down so people can remember the whole story that Peter’s giving everywhere that he goes. And, so, Mark eventually does. In a real way, what Mark could be recording is the gospel according to Peter. And most agree that Mark himself was the writer of Mark. There’s some speculation as to the time of its writing, but most scholars believe this…and this might sound surprising to you…but the first books, the first Christian writings preserved in the New Testament are the earliest letters of Paul and, perhaps, the letter of James. The gospel of Mark, being the first of the Gospels, so the first narrative of the life and ministry of Jesus, came later. About 10 or 15 years after Mark comes Matthew and Luke. And they’re a few years apart. And then about a decade, maybe even more, later, comes the gospel of John. So, we’re in the section of the New Testament known as the Gospels -  Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. And we’re about to enter the gospel of Mark, which is the first one. So, you may be like, yeah, I don’t care about all this stuff, just read the Bible, but this stuff is actually kind of important. Because when we can understand it, then we can begin to see how the gospel developed and spread. So, Mark is the first of the Gospels, then comes Matthew, then comes Luke, then comes John. And they’re spread out over a couple of decades. So, they’re written at different times and they’re also written to different audiences. So, their purpose is different. Mark is writing for the first time, the life and times of Jesus. And Mark’s gospel, more than any of the other Gospels shows the apocalyptic nature of some of Jesus teachings. We’ve already covered the apocalyptic worldview as we’ve talked before, but certainly will talk about it more in the gospel of Mark. Whereas the gospel of Matthew, that we just completed, was written for different purpose and to different people. Matthew was written to Jewish people and its intention was to show how Jesus connects to the Jewish story, how it’s the same story, how Jesus fulfills prophecy, and how Jesus fulfilled the law. If Matthew were being written to a Gentile audience, they wouldn’t even understand what was being talked about and they wouldn’t particularly care that Jesus was fulfilling prophecies from a different religion. However, Mark influences Matthew and Luke. Matthew, Mark, and Luke are known as the synoptic Gospels. And we’ll talk more about that along the way. But that means that they share a lot of the same stories and in a lot of cases they share exactly the same wording. Now, as it turns out, Greek scholars have examined the Greek of St. Luke, which is very educated and well written, contrasted with the Greek used in the gospel of Mark, and it’s very different. Mark’s gospel is written almost in like fifth grade elementary, like it’s written in very, very basic Greek. So, although Matthew and Mark use a lot of the material from Mark’s gospel, they’ll often make corrections to the grammar and expand the stories, as the traditions and stories about Jesus are collected through oral tradition. So, that’s kind of the lay of the land. What we’re going into as we go into the book of Mark is the first telling in written form in the New Testament of Jesus life and ministry. And we’ll see that it’s focus is on Jesus and his ministry. For example, there isn’t a birth story. Like, the Christmas story isn’t in the gospel of Mark. It begins with Jesus ministry. And so, we begin the second gospel in the New Testament in order, but the first gospel in the New Testament in time. Mark 1, 1 through 28.

Prayer:

Father, we thank You for Your word. We thank You for bringing us to this point. And as we enter into the gospel of Mark, we invite Your Holy Spirit. Jesus, it’s You that we seek. You are our Savior and it’s You that we are getting to know day by day through this process of sanctification. The Gospels, they give us the opportunity to follow along with You, hear the things You had to say, see the things that you did, all while modeling what humanity can look like, what humanity should look like, what it’s supposed to look like. And, so, we pay such close attention, because the Gospels introduce us to Your heart. And, so, as we move into this second gospel we continue to invite You to reveal Yourself to us through the power of Your Holy Spirit. Come, Holy Spirit. We pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Good morning Daily Audio Bible family. It is February 8th. My name is Barbie and I live in Mechanicsburg Pennsylvania and I wanted to call today for two specific sisters. I wanted to call for Salvation is Mine and for Melody from Canada. Ladies, I heard your prayers this morning. I heard your cries and I want you to know that you are so dear to my heart. And I am going to pray right now. Father, I pray for Salvation is Mine, that she rest in that promise, that she would hear Your voice calling to her, that You would open her eyes to see that You are with her, that she is not alone, that she is not invisible, that she is the only thing that You are looking at right now Lord. Comfort her and give her the strength that needs to move about her days, to be a light in her world, and the witness of Your glorious love. Father, I lift up Melody in Canada. The pain that she feels right now of wanting so deeply to have a career and to be a mother. And it hurts so much to want something that is being denied to you. Lord, I pray that you would give her just strength in knowing that this is for Your glory. We do not know what Your future plans are for her but in this time, as You call to her, I pray that she would respond, that her heart would be moved toward You, that You would use this time of rest to strengthen her for whatever is that You have in store for her and her future. Mold her into the woman that you are calling her to be and let her be strengthened by You Lord in this time. Give her a hunger and thirst for Your word for your company, that every…

Hey Daily Audio Bible. This is Paul from Houston and I want to pray for people as we’re going into Valentine’s Day next week. I want to pray for the folks that are brokenhearted, the people that are hurting from strained relationships. And I looked at Psalm 34:18, the Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit. So, I want to pray now. God, You are sovereign. I don’t understand why we go through this pain, but let that heal our brothers and sisters who are hurting. God, You loved us so much that You would spare Your own Son, but He endured the pain and hurt of the cross to redeem all of us to You. Thank You Lord for revealing Yourself and Your love to each of us in an individual way. Help us to know You personally and to know how much You love each of us individually. Please fill us with Your love so that we can pour Your love out into others that are around us each day. Bring them to know You Father so that we can know that we were made in Your image and for a purpose that You put in us before we were even born. Jeremiah 1:5, before I created you in your mother’s womb I knew you. Help us to know You Father. Help us to love those who are hurting and difficult to love. Thank You for Your presence. Pour out Your spirit, Your love on these brothers and sisters this Valentine’s Day and may they know, Ephesians 3:18, how wide, how long, and how high, and how deep is Your love for them. I just thank You Lord for being with us all Lord. Please give people peace and seal Your love and Your Spirit toward them and to know You personally, Father. And thank You. Thank You for the opportunity. Paul from Houston. Have a great Valentine’s Day…

Hello this is Candace from Oregon. Salvation is Mine, our beautiful, beautiful sister from San Leandro California. Our hearts ache for you amidst all that you’re going through. 2017 was shockingly difficult for so many of us. And in your case, I feel proud of you and honored that you are my sister when I remember your many calls across this past year and how many times you valiantly withstood hardship. A year like that requires recovery time. Please, immerse yourself in the Psalms. Cry out to Your beloved Savior, Jesus. It was kind of a shock to hear you say that you feel invisible. You are not invisible to us. And the Lord, Your beloved, as you engraved on the palm of his hand. He longs for you to just look to Him, cry out to Him, weep, even be angry. Just come to Him. Come to Him every minute that you have that you can and just pour out your heart. He loves you so deeply. One time, after I’d lost my husband of 41 years, a month later, it was in April I think, I asked the Lord to forgive me for how angry I was. And He…I heard Him in my heart say to me…I don’t have to forgive you for that…I hate death to. So, just know that you can fellowship with Him in a deeper way, even more than ever. So, go there my sister. We love you. We are praying for you.

Hello there. This is JoAnn Marie. I’m calling from Southern California. Today is Thursday, February 8th. I just heard Salvation is Mine. I heard you this morning. And I just want to give you a word of encouragement. I don’t know what’s going on in your life but about 10 years ago I had a semi-break down. I call it a breakthrough, but it was hell to go through. And God has totally seen me through the whole thing with my emotion, physical healing, finances. He just gave me help through other people. And one thing that you said, you’re struggling to keep it all together. You know what, it might be time not to keep it altogether and just continue to call out to God and let yourself have some of that time for healing for whatever it is that’s going on. But I do want to encourage you that God is with you He hears your call. If you can get the stamina up each day to praise Him no matter what it is you’re praying to Him as you praise Him, and it’s so good for your soul. Have a great day. And again, I’m praying for you Salvation is Mine. God is good. He is with you. Take courage. He will never leave you nor forsake you. Take care. bye-bye.

Bonnie, we heard you. I remember listening to your first call and telling us that your son was coming out of prison and asking for prayer for him. And Jacqueline we hear you. And others like Jacqueline who are screaming inside or so close to that, know that you are not alone even though it feels like that. I’ve been in a similar place myself. But you are not alone. And I know it’s no comfort right now, but God hears you, God ___ you and I pray, I’m praying so hard that He will give you…send you relief and surround you with people who will be an outlet for you where you can express even the feelings to get to the bottom of it and what’s going on. As well, I’ve got another comment Brian. Say, sometimes you leave on such a cliffhanger. Right? You get so into the story and suddenly you stop. It is like wait a minute I just can’t wait till tomorrow. I know that’s how it works but like today your reading along and then you finish on, look my betrayers here… And it’s like… No, you can’t stop now we need to know what happens next. Yeah, I know praise God. I’m getting into the Bible. It’s getting bad isn’t it? But yeah, thank you for your word again today. And it reminds us that, even though it’s a story that we’ve heard many, many times, it’s still relevant and it has relevance for us. All of these stories have relevance now as much as they did back then. This is Blessed by Him from Gloucester in the UK. I will run out of time probably. So, I’m just going to pray for a bit…but if I get cut off I get cut off. Have a blessed day wherever you are. Father God, we lift up Bonnie to You for her son. Thank you Lord that he’s coming out of prison and I pray Lord that you be at work in his heart and that he would want to come back to You and to read Sneezing Jesus and that You would be glorified in his life. Father God I lift up…

Exodus 37:1-38:31, Matthew 28:1-20, Psalms 34:11-22, Proverbs 9:9-10

Today is the 14th day of February. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I’m Brian. It is wonderful to be here with you. Happy Valentine’s Day for all of you lovers in the world. This also happens to be the first day in the season of Lent, but we’ll talk about that in a little while. What we’ve come here to do is to take the next step forward in the Scriptures. So, from the Contemporary English Version this week, Exodus chapter 37 and 38.

Commentary:

Okay. So, as I mentioned at the beginning, today is obviously Valentines day. So, shout out to all you lovers in the world. It’s definitely a day that we express and commemorate romantic love in the world. It just so happens that also today the season of Lent begins. And I talk about some of the seasons and some of the holidays, holy days, that are found on the Christian calendar because they present a rhythm. So, as we’re experiencing the rhythm of the Scripture in our lives every day, there’s also an ancient calendar that has a rhythm to it that’s intended to focus our heart on God and what God has done for us. So, if you celebrate Christmas, you’re celebrating a holy day that’s on the Christian calendar. If you celebrate Easter or Pentecost or St. Valentine’s Day or St. Patrick`s Day, like, these are commemorative days or holy days on the Christian calendar. There are also seasons. Advent would be a season, the season leading up to Christmas. Lent is the season leading up to Easter. So, we’re forty days out from Easter. So, let me pause here and just say, hey the Christian calendar isn’t in the New Testament. It’s not in the Bible. That’s not the point. And whether you’ve ever heard of Lent or not isn’t the point. Whether you have observed Lent in the past but you no longer do or you don’t even know what I’m talking about, like, that’s okay. At minimum, you’re going to get just a small little history context lesson and at most, you’re going to find something that’s rich and very meaningful and something that you begin to or continue to participate in.

So, Lent, probably you’ve heard of it. Probably it represents to you that, you know, you don’t eat candy bars or you don’t eat candy or you don’t eat sugar or you don’t do something. Whatever. You abstain from something for the season of Lent. And that alone is fine. If you’re used to eating a candy bar for lunch every day and you stop doing that, you break that rhythm, then everyday you’re thinking about that candy bar, thinking about what your normal rhythm is, you’re thinking about being a little hungry and needing a snack and it reminds you of the season that you’re in. But the purpose of Lent is to actually spend the forty days leading up to Easter understanding, like, fully trying to engage with what it cost to bring you spiritual freedom, salvation and eternal life. And we talked about this a couple days ago when we read through the crucifixion narrative in the gospel of Matthew. One of the things that we don’t do very well, that we don’t sit with very well, is lament. We very often skip over lament and move immediately toward grace and mercy, which are needed in endless supply for everyday, certainly. But we don’t consider the awful price of sin. We don’t actually focus our attention on what Jesus had to endure in order to make it easy for us. The kind of life that we experience spiritually came at tremendous sacrifice on our behalf by God. As the Scriptures tell us, while we were still His enemies, Jesus died for us. So, it’s a season to sit with that and begin to invite the Holy Spirit into that. Because sin still kills. Sin still destroys us. Sin is still a cancer that will eat us alive from the inside out. And, so, Lent is a season that comes every year and if giving up your afternoon candy bar is the thing, then that’s the thing. But the point isn’t giving up candy bars or any one thing. That tradition is as a reminder, a reminder that we are giving up everything. And in the season of Lent, we lament. We look back over our lives and allow the Holy Spirit to lead us back into places where we can see how sin has caused tremendous damage in our lives. And we begin to allow the Holy Spirit to lead us to the places that it still exists in our lives. And we invite the Holy Spirit to do the work in this season of restoring us as we move toward Easter. So, as we move toward resurrection and salvation, we actually apply ourselves and invite God’s Holy Spirit to do work inside of us. We’re saying, I’ll give up everything. I’m inviting you to re-order my life. What are the things that do not belong in my life anymore at all? Help me to rid myself and extricate myself from those things during this season. What are the things that are more important to me than they ought to be? Put them in my life where they belong. What are the things that are interfering with where we’re going together, Jesus? Show me those things. Show me how to get them out of my life or re-order them in my life so that they’re balanced properly in my relationship. My union with you is the primary focus of my life. If we use this season for that, then we will be joining in with a tradition that goes back all the way to the second generation of believers. So, the people that the apostles preached to? These are first generation believers. Their children, who grew up in the faith are the second generation. And there are early Christian writings from this time that talk about this. So, it’s an ancient Christian tradition, but it’s also one that will be being observed by millions of people around the world. And, as I say most every year that we get to this season and I do a little explanation of it, I didn’t grow up doing this. I grew up in the church, I grew up in a pastor’s home, but this isn’t something that we practiced. And you may be the same. And you may not want to do this, and that’s fine. There’s no commandment about it.  There’s nothing…it’s not like that. It’s not a command. It’s just an invitation to spend these forty days asking God the things that should be removed from your life, the things that should be re-ordered in your life. And then maybe you do some fasting or maybe you fast something so that every time you would normally turn toward that thing, that food, that activity, you are reminded of where your heart is focusing right now, where you are inviting God to work inside of you right now for these forty days, so that as we approach Easter, we have prepared our hearts and we enter into the Easter celebration fully aware of what it cost for us to even celebrate Easter. And what it means, what a monumental shift that happened in the world and in the human race because of Jesus death, resurrection and ascension.

Prayer:

So, Jesus, as we enter into this time, whether we’re actually going to observe Lent or whether we just focus our attention and affection right now, we open ourselves to You. And Lord, over this next period of time, we invite You, as we move toward resurrection day and our ultimate freedom from sin, we invite You to begin taking us back through our lives and showing us where sin has derailed us and to show us where the weeds of sin are still intertwined, the places that we still find ourselves deceived. The places that we’re continuing to allow this to grow within us. Holy Spirit, come. Show us how to cut that off. Show us how to remove that and burn it up in our lives, get away from it. And, Father, the places that are out of alignment in our lives because life is moving so fast that we just kind of have to patch it together as we go. The things that have fallen out of alignment. Things that are more important to us than maybe they ought to be, even though they’re good things. Or things that need more attention in our lives and should be elevated and paid more attention to. Re-order us, God. We want to move into Easter having truly contemplated what it cost to bring us to Easter. And we want to come into the Easter season in alignment with You so that we can fully embrace and rejoice in what Your victory has won. And as we move deeper, after Easter, into the springtime and new life flourishes around us, we want that to be what’s happening inside of us. So, come Holy Spirit in this season, we pray. In Jesus name. Amen.

Announcements:

Okay, so today begins Lent. This is known as Ash Wednesday. And you may be walking around the grocery store today or the gas station or wherever and see people with black smudges on their foreheads that are crosses. And you might even find that to be a little weird. I always did until I knew what was going on. Those are people who have gone to some sort of Ash Wednesday service and have had palm ash smudged on their forehead in the shape of a cross. It’s a way of representing sackcloth and ashes. It’s a way of representing repentance. It’s a way of representing lament and being public about it. And we see that tradition throughout the Scriptures. When you see someone like that, you’re seeing someone who is willing to humble themselves and look a little bit foolish to outwardly declare to the world, I am in a season of repentance. I repent from my sins. I am contemplating what it costs. What sin costs myself and my family and what sin cost ultimately and the sacrifice of Jesus. And I am declaring this openly even though I may look foolish. So, if you see someone walking around like that today, they are your brother or your sister. Pray for them. And if that sounds meaningful to you, find an Ash Wednesday service somewhere. Step out of your box. Move among brothers and sisters that you have never met. It’s a way of going public with your repentance. I mean, there’s no magic in this. Smear black on your forehead if that’s what you want and go out into the world. Whether they understand or not, you’re declaring your repentance. And you’re also declaring your allegiance. That’s what this is all about. Focusing our heart and our attention on what it cost to bring us our salvation and inviting the Holy Spirit to re-order our lives according to that salvation as we move into the celebration of the resurrection and our freedom.

I’ve been there, but I want to let you know Salvation is Mine, I’ve got your back, I’ve got you covered. I love you. Just keep pushing, because sometimes we have to do that solid scream and just keep going. God has your back. We’ve got your back. So, you’re going to be fine. I know you’re just going through little things. It’s hard when you’re in them yourself. But I’ve got you girl. I’m going try to encourage you. Every time I hear you call just smile. I want to hear that smile when you call in. You’re going to be fine. We all the through rough time. I love you and I’m asking God to pray for me as well. I am drifting off into my own things and it’s a big deal for me and it will put my finances where I needed. So, if you can guys, I’m asking you guys all pray for my new victory that I’m drifting out on life on my own business and just trying to sum up a little more money so that I can…everything will be taken care of. So, I’m asking you guys to over me with that. I love each and every one you guys. Keep continuing to pray for me and I’m going to keep continuing to pray for you guys. Love you guys. Have a great and wonderful and marvelous day.

Good morning family. I just wanted to say, bless you all, and we are listening and we are praying and we just wanted to say thank you so much for everything you share and this is Lara and Tom from Minnesota and just happy spring, want to stay positive. I just want to say that we are new to this series and we’ve been enjoying it immensely, but I just want to encourage each and every single one of you right now who are going through some pretty difficult times, I just want to lift you up. In Jesus’ name, I commit you to God, I commit your issues to God and just love them up in Jesus’ name. And I ask Father God, that Your will would be done and I pray a hedge of protection around these people Lord Jesus. And I pray Lord that Your guidance and Your wisdom and Your will would be done in their lives and I just plea the Lord Jesus on everyone Lord and a hedge of protection around them. Just bless them Lord and thank You so much for everything and thank You for what You’re doing in our lives. And we are touched with Your word God and how it shows us that every step of our lives has been directed, each day. And You know what we need before we even ask. Thank You. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Hi family it’s his little Sharie again and I wanted to thank you Mark S. and the lady in Canada, I think your name might be B, if not, forgive me. You both pray for my book and I really appreciate that. And I also wanted to say that I’m praying for all of our prodigal’s. So many people have called in about their sons, daughters, family members, friends who are far from God. I am joining my faith with yours praying for God to arrest them and reveal Himself to them. I also wanted to read something that I wrote called, Now that You’re an Adult. And I pray that it will be an encouragement to everyone out there praying for a prodigal, especially moms and dads. My child, now that you are an adult, I reach down with the roots of my faith into the mountain of God’s faithfulness and I drink deeply of trust. I need it now more than ever. This is the gift your independence has given me, dependence on the God who promises to be faithful to each generation. I don’t know what your future holds, but I know that wherever you go and whatever you do God will pursue you. You will never be able to escape the invitation of His Spirit. You will never be beyond the reach of His grace. The battle rages for your heart and yet I know that all the schemes of the evil one are no match to God’s genius for redemption. I wish I could protect you from all the lies of darkness. I wish I could spare you the mistakes you will make and the resulting pain, but I can’t. I can only do one thing. Now that you are beyond my reach, I can surrender you to his.

Hi DAB family this is Joyful Noise from Southern California. I am sharing something and confessing to you all that this was laid upon my heart early in January, January 3rd I think, to be exact, no maybe a little bit later. So, this is from a reading January 7th. This is from a reading way earlier this year and it so inspired me. It spoke to me in a way that it hasn’t in the previous six years of been going to the Bible with this community and with Brian. And here is the story. And I want you guys to think about this and think about how we have a tendency to hide from God and we how have a tendency to deny his presence during times of trouble or we have a tendency to, you know, look around for him. But listen to what Abraham did. So, this is from Genesis 18. The Lord appeared to Abraham at the Oaks at Mamre while he was sitting at the entrance of the stent during the heat of the day. He looked up and he saw three men standing near him. When he saw them, he ran from the entrance of the tent to meet them, bowed to the ground and said, my Lord, if I have found favor with you please do a no go on past your servant. Let a little water be brought that you may wash your feet and rest yourself under the tree. I will bring a bit of bread so that you will strengthen yourself. This is why you have passed your servants way. Later you can continue on. Yes, there will be times you will be upset. And, so, what struck me in this reading on January 7th was that, you know, God doesn’t just want us to kind of look around for Him, test the waters, think about maybe is He there, is He not there, where is His presence, but to run toward Him. And I was reminded of that again when I was rereading the prodigal son story. The father sees the son coming up the hill and runs towards him. So, that is how we are to respond to God when we feel His presence. So…

Hi. This is John and I’m calling from Cleveland Ohio. And I’m calling because of the faith that Blind Tony and Victoria and everybody else has shown me on the line…on the phone. And I have found myself praying along with you. I have a problem though, as a grandfather. I have a granddaughter who had been born with a herniated diaphragm. And what this does is it controls the area around the heart and lungs. There’s a hole in this area and it allowed the lower abdomen to let the liver and other parts of the body enter where her lungs are, crushing that area. And it wasn’t caught during pregnancy. So, this was a very complicated surgery and they had given her less than 10% chance to live. But we know as brothers and sisters in the Lord, that means nothing. And she lived and now she is 15 years old. The problem is, she’s now developing into a woman and the tissue is not growing along with her and again the diaphragm is torn open and these organs are again crushing her lungs. I need to ask the DABbers to pray along with me and to keep her in your prayers. Her name is Anessa Joy, known as AJ. And she may be flown by helicopter to the Cleveland clinic soon. They’re trying to stabilize her. And I just ask that everybody will keep her in your prayers. Thank you very much. Bye.

Hi this is Sharon The Victorious from Northern California. I pray for all of you. I really need your prayers. My husband’s back is so bad that he can barely walk and he still has to work. I pray for him to get better. I pray for my daughter who is bipolar and I think she’s using prescription drugs again. Things aren’t good. and I pray for her to get well. And I need a prayer for myself. I’m so depressed right now. I have found out that have glaucoma and cataracts in my eyes and I’m just going to turn 62. So, I go through a procedure on the 16th of this month to have laser surgery for the glaucoma. I’m scared. I don’t want to go blind and I need your prayers. I’m so down right now. Please help me. Please pray for me. Please God, come into my heart and help me through all this. My husband and I are in a fight right down too and after 41 years of marriage…and we just had our anniversary. I pray for you and please pray for me and my family. Thank you. God bless you all. Thank you.

Exodus 39-40

Making the Priestly Clothes

39 Beautiful priestly clothes were made of blue, purple, and red wool for Aaron to wear when he performed his duties in the holy place. This was done exactly as the Lord had commanded Moses.

2-3 The entire priestly vest was made of fine linen, woven with blue, purple, and red wool. Thin sheets of gold were hammered out and cut into threads that were skillfully woven into the vest. 4-5 It had two shoulder straps to support it and a sash that fastened around the waist. Onyx[a] stones were placed in gold settings, and each one was engraved with the name of one of Israel’s sons. Then these were attached to the shoulder straps of the vest, so the Lord would never forget his people. Everything was done exactly as the Lord had commanded Moses.

The Breastpiece

The breastpiece was made with the same materials and designs as the priestly vest. It was nine inches square and folded double 10 with four rows of three precious stones: A carnelian, a chrysolite, and an emerald were in the first row; 11 a turquoise, a sapphire, and a diamond were in the second row; 12 a jacinth, an agate, and an amethyst were in the third row; 13 and a beryl, an onyx, and a jasper[b] were in the fourth row. They were mounted in a delicate gold setting, 14 and on each of them was engraved the name of one of the twelve tribes of Israel.

15-18 Two gold rings were attached to the upper front corners of the breastpiece and fastened with two braided gold chains to gold settings on the shoulder straps. 19 Two other gold rings were attached to the lower inside corners next to the vest, 20 and two more near the bottom of the shoulder straps right above the sash. 21 To keep the breastpiece in place, a blue cord was used to tie the two lower rings on the breastpiece to those on the vest. These things were done exactly as the Lord had commanded Moses.

The Clothes for the Priests

22 The priestly robe was made of blue wool 23 with an opening in the center for the head. The material around the collar was bound so as to keep it from raveling. 24-26 Along the hem of the robe were woven pomegranates[c] of blue, purple, and red wool with a bell of pure gold between each of them. This robe was to be worn by Aaron when he performed his duties.

27-29 Everything that Aaron and his sons wore was made of fine linen woven with blue, purple, and red wool, including their robes and turbans, their fancy caps and underwear, and even their sashes that were embroidered with needlework.

30 “Dedicated to the Lord” was engraved on a narrow strip of pure gold, 31 which was fastened to Aaron’s turban. These things were done exactly as the Lord had commanded Moses.

The Work Is Completed

32 So the people of Israel finished making everything the Lord had told Moses to make. 33 Then they brought it all to Moses: the sacred tent and its equipment, including the hooks, the framework and crossbars, and its posts and stands; 34 the covering of tanned ram skins and fine leather; the inside curtain; 35 the sacred chest with its carrying poles and the place of mercy; 36 the table with all that goes on it, including the sacred bread; 37 the lampstand of pure gold, together with its equipment and oil; 38 the gold-covered incense altar; the ordination oil and the sweet-smelling incense; the curtain for the entrance to the tent; 39 the bronze altar for sacrifices with its bronze grating, its carrying poles, and its equipment; the large bronze bowl with its stand; 40 the curtain with its posts and cords, and its pegs and stands that go around the courtyard; everything needed for the sacred tent; 41 and the finely woven priestly clothes for Aaron and his sons.

42-43 When Moses saw that the people had done everything exactly as the Lord had commanded, he gave them his blessing.

The Lord’s Tent Is Set Up

40 The Lord said to Moses:

Set up my tent on the first day of the year[d] and put the chest with the Ten Commandments behind the inside curtain[e] of the tent. Bring in the table and set on it those things that are made for it. Also bring in the lampstand and attach the lamps to it. Then place the gold altar of incense in front of the sacred chest and hang a curtain at the entrance to the tent. Set the altar for burning sacrifices in front of the entrance to my tent. Put the large bronze bowl between the tent and the altar and fill the bowl with water. Surround the tent and the altar with the wall of curtains and hang the curtain that was made for the entrance.

Use the sacred olive oil to dedicate the tent and everything in it to me. 10 Do the same thing with the altar for offering sacrifices and its equipment 11 and with the bowl and its stand. 12 Bring Aaron and his sons to the entrance of the tent and have them wash themselves. 13 Dress Aaron in the priestly clothes, then use the sacred olive oil to ordain him and dedicate him to me as my priest. 14 Put the priestly robes on Aaron’s sons 15 and ordain them in the same way, so they and their descendants will always be my priests.

16 Moses followed the Lord’s instructions. 17 And on the first day of the first month[f] of the second year, the sacred tent was set up. 18 The posts, stands, and framework were put in place, 19 then the two layers of coverings were hung over them. 20 The stones with the Ten Commandments written on them were stored in the sacred chest, the place of mercy[g] was put on top of it, and the carrying poles were attached. 21 The chest was brought into the tent and set behind the curtain in the most holy place. These things were done exactly as the Lord had commanded Moses.

22 The table for the sacred bread was put along the north wall of the holy place, 23 after which the bread was set on the table. 24 The lampstand was put along the south wall, 25 then the lamps were attached to it there in the presence of the Lord. 26 The gold incense altar was set up in front of the curtain, 27 and sweet-smelling incense was burned on it. These things were done exactly as the Lord had commanded Moses.

28 The curtain was hung at the entrance to the sacred tent. 29 Then the altar for offering sacrifices was put in front of the tent, and animal sacrifices and gifts of grain were offered there. 30 The large bronze bowl was placed between the altar and the entrance to the tent. It was filled with water, 31 then Moses and Aaron, together with Aaron’s sons, washed their hands and feet. 32 In fact, they washed each time before entering the tent or offering sacrifices at the altar. These things were done exactly as the Lord had commanded Moses.

33 Finally, Moses had the curtain hung around the courtyard.

The Glory of the Lord

34 Suddenly the sacred tent was covered by a thick cloud and filled with the glory of the Lord. 35 And so, Moses could not enter the tent. 36 Whenever the cloud moved from the tent, the people would break camp and follow; 37 then they would set up camp and stay there, until it moved again. 38 No matter where the people traveled, the Lord was with them. Each day his cloud was over the tent, and each night a fire could be seen in the cloud.

Mark 1:1-28

The Preaching of John the Baptist

This is the good news about Jesus Christ, the Son of God.[a] It began just as God had said in the book written by Isaiah the prophet,

“I am sending my messenger
to get the way ready
for you.
In the desert
someone is shouting,
‘Get the road ready
for the Lord!
Make a straight path
for him.’”

So John the Baptist showed up in the desert and told everyone, “Turn back to God and be baptized! Then your sins will be forgiven.”

From all Judea and Jerusalem crowds of people went to John. They told how sorry they were for their sins, and he baptized them in the Jordan River.

John wore clothes made of camel’s hair. He had a leather strap around his waist and ate grasshoppers and wild honey.

John also told the people, “Someone more powerful is going to come. And I am not good enough even to stoop down and untie his sandals.[b] I baptize you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit!”

The Baptism of Jesus

About that time Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee, and John baptized him in the Jordan River. 10 As soon as Jesus came out of the water, he saw the sky open and the Holy Spirit coming down to him like a dove. 11 A voice from heaven said, “You are my own dear Son, and I am pleased with you.”

Jesus and Satan

12 Right away God’s Spirit made Jesus go into the desert. 13 He stayed there for forty days while Satan tested him. Jesus was with the wild animals, but angels took care of him.

Jesus Begins His Work

14 After John was arrested, Jesus went to Galilee and told the good news that comes from God.[c] 15 He said, “The time has come! God’s kingdom will soon be here.[d] Turn back to God and believe the good news!”

Jesus Chooses Four Fishermen

16 As Jesus was walking along the shore of Lake Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew. They were fishermen and were casting their nets into the lake. 17 Jesus said to them, “Come with me! I will teach you how to bring in people instead of fish.” 18 Right then the two brothers dropped their nets and went with him.

19 Jesus walked on and soon saw James and John, the sons of Zebedee. They were in a boat, mending their nets. 20 At once Jesus asked them to come with him. They left their father in the boat with the hired workers and went with him.

A Man with an Evil Spirit

21 Jesus and his disciples went to the town of Capernaum. Then on the next Sabbath he went into the Jewish meeting place and started teaching. 22 Everyone was amazed at his teaching. He taught with authority, and not like the teachers of the Law of Moses. 23 Suddenly a man with an evil spirit[e] in him entered the meeting place and yelled, 24 “Jesus from Nazareth, what do you want with us? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are! You are God’s Holy One.”

25 Jesus told the evil spirit, “Be quiet and come out of the man!” 26 The spirit shook him. Then it gave a loud shout and left.

27 Everyone was completely surprised and kept saying to each other, “What is this? It must be some new kind of powerful teaching! Even the evil spirits obey him.” 28 News about Jesus quickly spread all over Galilee.

Psalm 35:1-16

(A psalm by David.)

A Prayer for Protection from Enemies

35 Fight my enemies, Lord!
Attack my attackers!
Shield me and help me.
Aim your spear at everyone
who hunts me down,
but promise to save me.

Let all who want to kill me
be disappointed
and disgraced.
Chase away and confuse
all who plan to harm me.
Send your angel after them
and let them be like straw
in the wind.
Make them run in the dark
on a slippery road,
as your angel chases them.
I did them no harm,
but they hid a net
to trap me,
and they dug a deep pit
to catch and kill me.
Surprise them with disaster!
Trap them in their own nets
and let them fall and rot
in the pits they have dug.

I will celebrate and be joyful
because you, Lord,
have saved me.
10 Every bone in my body
will shout:
“No one is like the Lord!”
You protect the helpless
from those in power;
you save the poor and needy
from those who hurt them.

11 Liars accuse me of crimes
I know nothing about.
12 They repay evil for good,
and I feel all alone.
13 When they were sick,
I wore sackcloth[a]
and went without food.[b]
I truly prayed for them,[c]
14 as I would for a friend
or a relative.
I was in sorrow and mourned,
as I would for my mother.

15 I have stumbled,
and worthless liars
I don’t even know
surround me and sneer.
16 Worthless people make fun[d]
and never stop laughing.

Proverbs 9:11-12

11 I am Wisdom.
If you follow me,
you will live a long time.
12 Good sense is good for you,
but if you brag,
you hurt yourself.

Exodus 37-38

The Sacred Chest

37 Bezalel built a chest of acacia wood forty-five inches long, twenty-seven inches wide, and twenty-seven inches high. He covered it inside and out with pure gold and put a gold edging around the top. He made four gold rings and fastened one of them to each of the four legs of the chest. Then he made two poles of acacia wood, covered them with gold, and put them through the rings, so the chest could be carried by the poles.

The entire lid of the chest, which was also covered with pure gold, was the place of mercy.[a] 7-9 On each of the two ends of the chest he made a winged creature of hammered gold. They faced each other, and their wings covered the place of mercy.

The Table for the Sacred Bread

10 Bezalel built a table of acacia wood thirty-six inches long, eighteen inches wide, and twenty-seven inches high. 11-12 He covered it with pure gold and put a gold edging around it with a border three inches wide.[b] 13 He made four gold rings and attached one to each of the legs 14 near the edging. The poles for carrying the table were placed through these rings 15 and were made of acacia wood covered with gold. 16 Everything that was to be set on the table was made of pure gold—the bowls, plates, jars, and cups for wine offerings.

The Lampstand

17 Bezalel made a lampstand of pure gold. The whole lampstand, including its decorative flowers, was made from a single piece of hammered gold, 18 with three branches on each of its two sides. 19 There were three decorative almond blossoms on each branch 20 and four on the stem. 21 There was also a blossom where each pair of branches came out from the stem. 22 The lampstand, including its branches and decorative flowers, was made from a single piece of hammered pure gold. 23-24 The lamp and its equipment, including the tongs and trays, were made of about seventy-five pounds of pure gold.

The Altar for Burning Incense

25 For burning incense, Bezalel made an altar of acacia wood. It was eighteen inches square and thirty-six inches high with each of its four corners sticking up like the horn of a bull. 26 He covered it with pure gold and put a gold edging around it. 27 Then below the edging on opposite sides he attached two gold rings through which he put the poles for carrying the altar. 28 These poles were also made of acacia wood and covered with gold.

The Oil for Dedication and the Incense

29 Bezalel mixed the oil for dedication and the sweet-smelling spices for the incense.

The Altar for Offering Sacrifices

38 Bezalel built an altar of acacia wood for offering sacrifices. It was seven and a half feet square and four and a half feet high with each of its four corners sticking up like the horn of a bull, and it was completely covered with bronze. The equipment for the altar was also made of bronze—the pans for the hot ashes, the shovels, the meat forks, and the fire pans. Midway up the altar he built a ledge around it and covered the bottom half of the altar with a decorative bronze grating. Then he attached a bronze ring beneath the ledge at the four corners to put the poles through. He covered two acacia wood poles with bronze and put them through the rings for carrying the altar, which was shaped like an open box.

The Large Bronze Bowl

Bezalel made a large bowl and a stand out of bronze from the mirrors of the women who helped at the entrance to the sacred tent.

The Courtyard around the Sacred Tent

9-17 Around the sacred tent Bezalel built a courtyard one hundred fifty feet long on the south and north and seventy-five feet wide on the east and west. He used twenty bronze posts on bronze stands for the south and north and ten for the west. Then he hung a curtain of fine linen on the posts along each of these three sides by using silver hooks and rods. He placed three bronze posts on each side of the entrance at the east and hung a curtain seven and a half yards wide on each set of posts.

18-19 For the entrance to the courtyard, Bezalel made a curtain ten yards long, which he hung on four bronze posts that were set on bronze stands. This curtain was the same height as the one for the rest of the courtyard and was made of fine linen embroidered and woven with blue, purple, and red wool. He hung the curtain on the four posts, using silver hooks and rods. 20 The pegs for the tent and for the curtain around the tent were made of bronze.

The Sacred Tent

21-23 Bezalel had worked closely with Oholiab,[c] who was an expert at designing and engraving, and at embroidering blue, purple, and red wool. The two of them completed the work that the Lord had commanded.

Moses made Aaron’s son Ithamar responsible for keeping record of the metals used for the sacred tent. 24 According to the official weights, the amount of gold given was two thousand two hundred nine pounds, 25 and the silver that was collected when the people were counted[d] came to seven thousand five hundred fifty pounds. 26 Everyone who was counted paid the required amount, and there was a total of 603,550 men who were twenty years old or older.

27 Seventy-five pounds of the silver were used to make each of the one hundred stands for the sacred tent and the curtain. 28 The remaining fifty pounds of silver were used for the hooks and rods and for covering the tops of the posts.

29 Five thousand three hundred pounds of bronze were given. 30 And it was used to make the stands for the entrance to the tent, the altar and its grating, the equipment for the altar, 31 the stands for the posts that surrounded the courtyard, including those at the entrance to the courtyard, and the pegs for the tent and the courtyard.

Matthew 28

Jesus Is Alive

28 The Sabbath was over, and it was almost daybreak on Sunday when Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to see the tomb. Suddenly a strong earthquake struck, and the Lord’s angel came down from heaven. He rolled away the stone and sat on it. The angel looked as bright as lightning, and his clothes were white as snow. The guards shook from fear and fell down, as though they were dead.

The angel said to the women, “Don’t be afraid! I know you are looking for Jesus, who was nailed to a cross. He isn’t here! God has raised him to life, just as Jesus said he would. Come, see the place where his body was lying. Now hurry! Tell his disciples that he has been raised to life and is on his way to Galilee. Go there, and you will see him. That is what I came to tell you.”

The women were frightened and yet very happy, as they hurried from the tomb and ran to tell his disciples. Suddenly Jesus met them and greeted them. They went near him, held on to his feet, and worshiped him. 10 Then Jesus said, “Don’t be afraid! Tell my followers to go to Galilee. They will see me there.”

Report of the Guard

11 While the women were on their way, some soldiers who had been guarding the tomb went into the city. They told the chief priests everything that had happened. 12 So the chief priests met with the leaders and decided to bribe the soldiers with a lot of money. 13 They said to the soldiers, “Tell everyone that Jesus' disciples came during the night and stole his body while you were asleep. 14 If the governor[a] hears about this, we will talk to him. You won’t have anything to worry about.” 15 The soldiers took the money and did what they were told. The Jewish people still tell each other this story.

What Jesus' Followers Must Do

16 Jesus' eleven disciples went to a mountain in Galilee, where Jesus had told them to meet him. 17 They saw him and worshiped him, but some of them doubted.

18 Jesus came to them and said:

I have been given all authority in heaven and on earth! 19 Go to the people of all nations and make them my disciples. Baptize them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, 20 and teach them to do everything I have told you. I will be with you always, even until the end of the world.

Psalm 34:11-22

11 Come, my children, listen
as I teach you
to respect the Lord.
12 Do you want to live
and enjoy a long life?
13 Then don’t say cruel things
and don’t tell lies.
14 Do good instead of evil
and try to live at peace.

15 If you obey the Lord,
he will watch over you
and answer your prayers.
16 But God despises evil people,
and he will wipe them all
from the earth,
till they are forgotten.
17 When his people pray for help,
he listens and rescues them
from their troubles.
18 The Lord is there to rescue
all
who are discouraged
and have given up hope.

19 The Lord’s people
may suffer a lot,
but he will always
bring them safely through.
20 Not one of their bones
will ever be broken.

21 Wicked people are killed
by their own evil deeds,
and if you hate God’s people
you will be punished.
22 The Lord saves the lives
of his servants.
Run to him for protection,
and you won’t be punished.

Proverbs 9:9-10

If you have good sense,
instruction will help you
to have even better sense.
And if you live right,
education will help you
to know even more.

10 Respect and obey the Lord!
This is the beginning
of wisdom.[a]
To have understanding,
you must know the Holy God.
