Genesis 44-45

Joseph tests his brothers

44 Joseph gave commands to his household manager: “Fill the men’s sacks with as much food as they’ll hold, and put each man’s silver at the top of his sack. Put my cup, the silver cup, on top of the youngest brother’s sack, together with the silver for his grain.” So he did just as Joseph told him to do.

At dawn, the men and their donkeys were sent off. They had left the city but hadn’t gone far when Joseph said to his household manager, “Get ready, go after the men and catch up with them! Ask them, ‘Why have you repaid hospitality with ingratitude?[a] Isn’t this the cup[b] my master drinks from and uses to discover God’s plans?[c] What you’ve done is despicable.’”

When he caught up to them, he repeated these words. They replied, “Why does my master talk to us like this? Your servants would never do such a thing. The silver that we found at the top of our sacks, we’ve just brought back to you from the land of Canaan. We didn’t steal silver or gold from your master’s house. Whoever of your servants is found with it will be put to death, and we’ll be my master’s slaves.”

10 He said, “Fine. We’ll do just as you’ve said. Whoever is found with it will be my slave, and the rest of you will go free.” 11 Everyone quickly lowered their sacks down to the ground and each opened his sack. 12 He searched the oldest first and the youngest last, and the cup was found in Benjamin’s sack. 13 At this, they tore their clothing. Then everyone loaded their donkeys, and they returned to the city.

14 When Judah and his brothers arrived at Joseph’s house, he was still there, and they fell to the ground in front of him. 15 Joseph said to them, “What’s this you’ve done? Didn’t you know someone like me can discover God’s plans?”[d]

16 Judah replied, “What can we say to my master? What words can we use? How can we prove we are innocent? God has found your servants guilty. We are now your slaves, all of us, including the one found with the cup.”

17 Joseph said, “I’d never do such a thing. Only the man found with the cup will be my slave. As for the rest of you, you are free to go back to your father.”

Judah appeals for Benjamin

18 Judah approached him and said, “Please, my master, allow your servant to say something to my master without getting angry with your servant since you are like Pharaoh himself. 19 My master asked his servants, ‘Do you have a father or brother?’ 20 And we said to my master, ‘Yes, we have an elderly father and a young brother, born when he was old. His brother is dead and he’s his mother’s only child. But his father loves him.’ 21 You told your servants, ‘Bring him down to me so I can see him.’ 22 And we said to my master, ‘The young man can’t leave his father. If he leaves, his father will die.’ 23 You said to your servants, ‘If your youngest brother doesn’t come down with you, you’ll never see my face again.’

24 “When we went back to my father your servant, we told him what you said. 25 Our father told us, ‘Go back and buy for us a little food.’ 26 But we said, ‘We can’t go down. We will go down only if our youngest brother is with us. We won’t be able to gain an audience with the man without our youngest brother with us.’ 27 Your servant my father said to us, ‘You know that my wife gave birth to two sons for me. 28 One disappeared and I said, “He must have been torn up by a wild animal,” and I haven’t seen him since. 29 And if you take this one from me too, something terrible will happen to him, and you will send me—old as I am—to my grave in despair.’ 30 When I now go back to your servant my father without the young man—whose life is so bound up with his— 31 and when he sees that the young man isn’t with us,[e] he will die, and your servants will have sent our father your servant—old as he is—to his grave in grief. 32 I, your servant, guaranteed the young man’s safety to my father, telling him, ‘If I don’t bring him back to you, it will be my fault forever.’ 33 Now, please let your servant stay as your slave instead of the young man so that he can go back with his brothers. 34 How can I go back to my father without the young man? I couldn’t bear to see how badly my father would be hurt.”

Joseph reveals his identity

45 Joseph could no longer control himself in front of all his attendants, so he declared, “Everyone, leave now!” So no one stayed with him when he revealed his identity to his brothers. He wept so loudly that the Egyptians and Pharaoh’s household heard him. Joseph said to his brothers, “I’m Joseph! Is my father really still alive?” His brothers couldn’t respond because they were terrified before him.

Joseph said to his brothers, “Come closer to me,” and they moved closer. He said, “I’m your brother Joseph! The one you sold to Egypt. Now, don’t be upset and don’t be angry with yourselves that you sold me here. Actually, God sent me before you to save lives. We’ve already had two years of famine in the land, and there are five years left without planting or harvesting. God sent me before you to make sure you’d survive[f] and to rescue your lives in this amazing way. You didn’t send me here; it was God who made me a father to Pharaoh, master of his entire household, and ruler of the whole land of Egypt.

“Hurry! Go back to your father. Tell him this is what your son Joseph says: ‘God has made me master of all of Egypt. Come down to me. Don’t delay. 10 You may live in the land of Goshen, so you will be near me, your children, your grandchildren, your flocks, your herds, and everyone with you. 11 I will support you there, so you, your household, and everyone with you won’t starve, since the famine will still last five years.’ 12 You and my brother Benjamin have seen with your own eyes that I’m speaking to you. 13 Tell my father about my power in Egypt and about everything you’ve seen. Hurry and bring my father down here.” 14 He threw his arms around his brother Benjamin’s neck and wept, and Benjamin wept on his shoulder. 15 He kissed all of his brothers and wept, embracing them. After that, his brothers were finally able to talk to him.

Joseph’s brothers return for Jacob

16 When Pharaoh’s household heard the message “Joseph’s brothers have arrived,” both Pharaoh and his servants were pleased. 17 Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Give your brothers these instructions: Load your pack animals and go back to the land of Canaan. 18 Get your father and your households and come back to me. Let me provide you with good things from the land of Egypt so that you may eat the land’s best food. 19 Give them these instructions too: Take wagons from the land of Egypt for your children and wives, and pick up your father and come back. 20 Don’t worry about your possessions because you will have good things from the entire land of Egypt.”

21 So Israel’s sons did that. Joseph gave them wagons as Pharaoh instructed, and he gave them provisions for the road. 22 To all of them he gave a change of clothing, but to Benjamin he gave three hundred pieces of silver and five changes of clothing. 23 To his father he sent ten male donkeys carrying goods from Egypt, ten female donkeys carrying grain and bread, and rations for his father for the road. 24 He sent his brothers off; and as they were leaving, he told them, “Don’t be worried about the trip.”[g]

25 So they left Egypt and returned to their father Jacob in the land of Canaan. 26 They announced to him, “Joseph’s still alive! He’s actually ruler of all the land of Egypt!” Jacob’s heart nearly failed, and he didn’t believe them.

27 When they told him everything Joseph had said to them, and when he saw the wagons Joseph had sent to carry him, Jacob recovered. 28 Then Israel said, “This is too much! My son Joseph is still alive! Let me go and see him before I die.”

Psalm 18:35-50

35 You’ve given me the shield of your salvation;
your strong hand has supported me;
your help has made me great.
36 You’ve let me walk fast and safe,
without even twisting an ankle.
37 I chased my enemies and caught them!
I didn’t come home until I finished them off.
38 I struck them down;
they couldn’t get up again;
they fell under my feet.
39 You equipped me with strength for war;
you brought my adversaries down underneath me.
40 You made my enemies turn tail from me;
I destroyed my foes.
41 They cried for help,
but there was no one to save them.
They cried for help to the Lord,
but he wouldn’t answer them.
42 I crushed them
like dust blown away by the wind;
I threw them out
like mud dumped in the streets.
43 You delivered me from struggles with many people;
you appointed me the leader of many nations.
Strangers come to serve me.
44 After hearing about me, they obey me;
foreigners grovel before me.
45 Foreigners lose their nerve;
they come trembling out of their fortresses.[a]

46 The Lord lives! Bless God, my rock!
Let the God of my salvation be lifted high!
47 This is the God who avenges on my behalf,
who subdues people before me,
48 who delivers me from my enemies.
Yes, you lifted me high above my adversaries;
you delivered me from violent people.
49 That’s why I thank you, Lord,
in the presence of the nations.
That’s why I sing praises to your name.
50 You are the one who gives great victories to your king,
who shows faithful love to your anointed one—
to David and to his descendants forever.

Proverbs 4:11-13

11 I teach you the path of wisdom.
I lead you in straight courses.
12 When you walk, you won’t be hindered;
when you run, you won’t stumble.
13 Hold on to instruction; don’t slack off;
protect it, for it is your life.

Genesis 42:18-43:34, Matthew 13:47-14:13, Psalms 18:16-34, Proverbs 4:7-10

Today is the 21st day of January. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I am Brian. It’s great to be here with you at this threshold that we get to cross every seven days, the threshold of a shiny, sparkly, brand-new week, where everything that is gone before us is in the past, and the week is out in front of us. And we can choose to live within the counsel and wisdom of the Scriptures as they’re a part of our lives every day. So, this week we’re going to read from the Common English Bible. And we’ll pick up where we left off yesterday. We’re in the story of Joseph and it’s a drama packed story that is so much of a mirror into our own lives and motives and responses. And Joseph is now dealing with seeing the very family members, his brothers, who trafficked him into slavery. Genesis chapter 42 verse 18 through 43 verse 34 today.

Okay. So, Joseph is seeing his brothers. He has seen his brothers but they don’t know that they’re seeing Joseph. And because Joseph can speak Hebrew as well as it the Egyptian languages that he needs in the country that he’s in, he can understand what they’re saying. So, he knows what’s going on. And it’s going all the way to his heart, like, we find them leaving the room to weep. But he’s not revealing his identity yet. Right? So, these people are Joseph’s brothers, but they are also the people that sold him into slavery. They trafficked their own brother. So, Joseph, being coy or cunning with them isn’t so much revenge on his part. If it was revenge that he wanted it would be revenge that he could get. He could label them all as spies, he could reveal who he is, and he could have them executed. Rather, Joseph is testing them. He’s finding out where their hearts are, but he’s not just finding out where their hearts are for himself. Their hearts are being revealed to themselves. This secret of selling Joseph into slavery goes back a couple of decades. It’s been something they’ve been sitting on for a long time. They’ve let their father believe that Joseph was killed long, long ago. And, so, all of this is being surfaced in them. It’s revealing their hearts. So, we’ll have to wait and let the story unfold and see how Joseph ends up dealing with all of this, but it’s good for us to remember that, when we enter into a time of testing, it’s going to surface in us all kinds of things, but it’s also going to surface what we believe about God. So, if we enter into a season of wilderness, a season of testing, and we find ourselves jumping up and down and running in circles and shaking our fists at the sky world, well then, we have revealed what we think about our relationship with God. And, yet, when we enter those times and they’re shaking us up and they’re rough and tumble times and we hold onto God for dear life, not accusing Him of anything or blaming Him for stuff that He has nothing to do with, but holding on to Him for dear life, for direction, and clarity, and guidance, and fellowship, and intimacy, well then, we’re revealing what we really feel about God. So, we’re seeing this kind of stuff happen inside of Joseph’s brothers lives as they consider the predicament that they’re in. The truth of their hearts is coming to the surface and being revealed. And, so, we can consider this as we go through our own times of testing.

Prayer:

Jesus, we invite You into that. We first begin by apologizing for the way that we’ve thrashed around and flailed and blamed and tried to sidestep all kinds of things in these times that shake us up. We’ve done that. We confess that. It reveals our hearts and it’s not the way that we want it to be. We want to hold on to You for dear, dear life. You are our only hope. And, so, we cling to You in all things, and allow You to work through all things, sanctifying us, perfecting us, making us like You. And we invite You, Jesus, into all of that, all the things that come up when were shaken. And when everything else shakes loose we want to see that the bedrock, the most important relationship, the most important connection in our entire existence, is the one we share with You. Come, Holy Spirit. We pray in Jesus name. Amen.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Hi. Daily Audio Bible. This is Leah calling from Georgetown Delaware. Hi. This is my first time calling and I’ve been listening to the daily Bible for about a year now, on and off. But 2018 is my first year listening all the way through and I’m really excited. I’m enjoying it every day. I just wanted to say that it’s really blessed my life. I am 26 years old and this year, this past year, 2017, has been a real of breakthrough and deliverance for me in Christ. And I’m just really thankful for that and amazed at what God’s been doing in my heart and life. I’ve been getting stronger in my faith. I just want to ask for pray…I just when ask for prayer for…right now…my church is doing a fast…and I just would ask for prayer right now as I’m praying…trying to seek the Lord, that the Lord would strengthen my faith and walk in Him and that I would become more confident in the Lord. I would just really appreciate that. And I also want to respond quickly to a prayer request call that came in from a girl, who, I’m trying to remember her name, I think it was Kelly, a few days ago who said she was in her late 20s and she is learning how to walk out her faith. And she’s a new listener as well and her first time calling in. I just want to reach out to her and tell her that I’m praying for you girl, I’m praying for you. God bless you and I’m keeping you in my prayers as you walk out your faith. I know what it’s like to learn how to walk out your faith and learn to be bold and confident in Christ alone. And, know that you’re not alone, know that you are loved and that there are other people out there who are learning. You know, after maybe, like for me, learning how to walk in Christ alone, how to have faith in Christ alone, and what that means, and what it means to have community around you in Christ, brothers and sisters who love you. Maybe after walking away for a long time…

Hey Brian, this is Mike. I just want to thank you. I always listen to the DAB while I’m in the shower and I’ve been listening to you since 2010, when I lived in Hollywood. Since then I’ve lived in many places. And as I heard your voice today and talking about how Jacob wrestled with the Lord, I thought, a year ago, I was in Louisiana, now I’m in Colorado, soon to be moving to New York City again. And, I just really want to tell you I appreciate you. You’ve been with me, your voice at least, since 2010. And that’s just like about eight years and I love DAB and I just can’t believe how your steadfastness touches so many people. I mean the power of media, the power of the word of God hitting media, you probably minister to like millions of people, maybe every day. __ man. Jesus is amazing and He works in you and through you and through your awesomely deep raspy voice every day and I love you and I appreciate it. Amen. Keep it up. Thanks.

Hi. My name is David and I’m a child of God in Northern California, San Francisco Bay Area. And the reason I’m calling is, it’s is my first time calling. I’ve been listening for about a year. Some of my family members and friends listen as well now. But the reason I called is I am a young life leader. I don’t know how many thousands of people around the world that are young life leaders. And our mission in young life is to introduce adolescents to Jesus and to help them grow in their faith. And in our area, we need prayer. We’re feeling attacked and we need God’s direction. So, I appreciate this community. I’m so thankful for your prayers. And I would just ask, could you please be praying for, first of all, your young life, your area, young life areas, young life leaders that might be in your area. But secondly, would you pray for San Francisco Bay region and specifically the Delta area of the San Francisco Bay region, that we would be encouraged, and that we would get direction from God to guide us and lead adolescents Christ. Thank you so much for this community. Thank you for the opportunity to send this prayer request as well. God bless you.

Hi Daily Audio Bible this is Emily in Germany, well, in Europe. I haven’t called in for a really long time. I’ve been putting off the call, not because I didn’t want to call in, just because I’m really busy. In June, 2016, I was listening to the community prayer line and somebody praying for people who are suffering with dementia, that their minds will become clear, and they would be able to hear from God, and we have a friend whose mom is suffering with dementia and Alzheimer’s and we’ve been praying for her salvation for a really long time. And the Holy Spirit, when I was listening to that community podcast, the Holy Spirit told me to pray for her. And, so I just ___ pray for her at that moment. And at that moment her daughter was there visiting her and she prayed the Lord’s prayer with her. And her mom repeated, her mom was Catholic. And then she just, it came to her that maybe I should pray the sinners prayer, because the mom is not usually very…she doesn’t talk very much…she was like interacting well and repeating well what her daughter was saying and so she prayed the sinners prayer and her mom pray the sinners prayer after her and when she came back and shared with our home group but it happened, it was the same day, it was the same moment that I was praying for her. And I just really wanted to thank you for calling in. You never know when you’re…whatever your praying is going to be answered or how, or how it’s going to touch people around the world. So, thank you for that. And I also just wanted to ask for prayer for my father-in-law. He has lung cancer and he’s only got a few months left and it’s just really hard on my family. Please pray for his salvation and my husband and my brother-in-law as they care for him. Bye-bye.

Daily Audio Bible friends. This is Lara in San Diego. I woke up this morning just feeling it on my heart to call in and pray for those who face anxiety, depression, and suicide. In the name of Jesus, we come against the enemy, we rebuke anxiety, depression, and suicide. We know these are the tools of the enemy. I pray for anyone who’s affected by these. Lord, we pray that the people who are facing these demons would stand and speak rebuke to them in the name and power of Jesus. By his blood we are set free, we are cleansed, we are whole, we are made new, and we stand in faith. We pray Lord, I pray for those who I know personally who face these things on a daily basis or for years. And I pray Lord Jesus that they would take these strengths in Your word and Your truth, that they would be able to stand against the enemy. I pray for anyone who’s listening to the Daily Audio Bible. The Lord Jesus has saved you. Take heart and stand in this truth. Write it on your mirror, speak it with your own lips, stand with it, get up out of your bed, go open the shades, go outside, and stand in the truth that the Lord Jesus has saved you. He is a good Shepherd. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death I will fear no evil for thy God and thy staff comfort me. Lord Jesus lead us out into green pastures beside still waters. Let us take heart in your good shepherding and Lord in the power that your blood has earned. Thank you, Jesus, for dying on the cross for our sins. May we stand in the truth of who you are. I love you Jesus. Amen.

The Daily Audio Bible Reading for Sunday January 21, 2018 (NIV)

Genesis 42:18-43:34

18 On the third day, Joseph said to them, “Do this and you will live, for I’m a God-fearing man. 19 If you are honest men, let one of your brothers stay in prison, and the rest of you, go, take grain back to those in your households who are hungry. 20 But bring your youngest brother back to me so that your words will prove true and you won’t die.”

So they prepared to do this. 21 The brothers said to each other, “We are clearly guilty for what we did to our brother when we saw his life in danger and when he begged us for mercy, but we didn’t listen. That’s why we’re in this danger now.”

22 Reuben responded to them, “Didn’t I tell you, ‘Don’t do anything wrong to the boy’? But you wouldn’t listen. So now this is payback for his death.” 23 They didn’t know that Joseph was listening to them because they were using an interpreter. 24 He stepped away from them and wept. When he returned, he spoke with them again. Then he took Simeon from them and tied him up in front of them.

25 Then Joseph gave orders to fill their bags with grain, to put back each man’s silver into his own sack, and to give them provisions for their trip, and it was done. 26 They loaded their grain onto their donkeys, and they set out. 27 When they stopped to spend the night, one of them opened his sack to feed his donkey, and he saw his silver at the top of his sack. 28 He said to his brothers, “My silver’s been returned. It’s right here in my sack.” Their hearts stopped. Terrified, they said to each other, “What has God done to us?”

29 When they got back to their father Jacob in the land of Canaan, they described to him everything that had happened to them: 30 “The man, the country’s governor, spoke to us with a harsh tone and accused us of being spies in the country. 31 We told him, ‘We’re honest men, not spies. 32 We are twelve brothers, all our father’s sons. One of us is gone, but the youngest is right now with our father in the land of Canaan.’ 33 The man, the country’s governor, told us, ‘This is how I will know you are honest men: Leave one of your brothers with me, take grain for those in your households who are hungry, and go. 34 But bring back your youngest brother to me. Then I will know that you are not spies but honest men. I will give your brother back to you, and you may travel throughout the country.’”

35 When they opened their sacks, each man found a pouch of his silver in his sack. When they and their father saw their pouches of silver, they were afraid. 36 Their father Jacob said to them, “You’ve taken my children from me. Joseph’s gone. Simeon’s gone. And you are taking Benjamin. All this can’t really be happening to me!”

37 Reuben said to his father, “You may put both of my sons to death if I don’t bring him back to you. Make him my responsibility, and I will make sure he returns to you.”

38 But Jacob said to him, “My son won’t go down with you because his brother’s dead and he’s been left all alone. If anything were to happen to him on the trip you are taking, you would send me—old as I am—to my grave in grief.”

Joseph’s brothers return with Benjamin

43 The famine was severe in the land, and when they had eaten all the grain that they brought from Egypt, their father said to them, “Go back and buy us a little food.”

Judah said to him, “The man was absolutely serious when he said, ‘You may not see me again without your brother with you.’ If you agree to send our brother with us, then we will go down and buy you food. But if you don’t agree to send him, then we can’t go down because the man said to us, ‘You may not see me again without your brother with you.’”

Israel said, “Why have you caused me such pain by telling the man you had another brother?”

They said, “The man asked us pointedly about our family: ‘Is your father still alive? Do you have a brother?’ So we told him just what we’ve said. How were we to know he’d say, ‘Bring your brother down here’?”

Judah said to his father Israel, “Send the young man with me. Let’s get ready to leave so that we can stay alive and not die—we, you, and our children. I will guarantee his safety; you can hold me responsible. If I don’t bring him back to you and place him here in front of you, it will be my fault forever. 10 If we hadn’t waited so long, we would’ve returned twice by now.”

11 Their father Israel said to them, “If it has to be, then do this. Take in your bags some of the land’s choice produce, and bring it down to the man as a gift: a little medicinal resin, a little honey, gum, resin, pistachios, and almonds. 12 Take twice as much silver with you, and take back the silver returned in the top of your sacks. It might have been a mistake. 13 And take your brother, get ready, and go back to the man. 14 May God Almighty[a] make the man compassionate toward you so that he may send back our other brother and Benjamin with you. But me, if I’m left childless, then I’m left childless.”

15 So the men took this gift. They took twice as much silver with them, together with Benjamin. They left, traveled down to Egypt, and received an audience with Joseph. 16 When Joseph saw Benjamin with them, he said to the manager of his household, “Bring the men to the house and slaughter an animal and prepare it because the men will have dinner with me at noon.” 17 The man did as Joseph told him and brought the men to Joseph’s house.

18 When they were brought to Joseph’s house, the men were frightened and said, “We’ve been brought here because of the silver put back in our sacks on our first trip so he can overpower us, capture us, make slaves of us, and take our donkeys.”

19 They approached the man who was Joseph’s household manager and spoke to him at the house’s entrance: 20 “Please, Master, we came down the first time just to buy food, 21 but when we stopped to spend the night and opened our sacks, there was the exact amount of each man’s silver at the top of his sack. We’ve brought it back with us, 22 and we’ve brought down with us additional silver to buy food. We don’t know who put our silver in our sacks.”

23 He said, “You are fine. Don’t be afraid. Your God and your father’s God must have hidden a treasure in your sacks. I received your money.” Then he brought Simeon out to them.

24 The manager brought the men into Joseph’s house and gave them water to wash their feet and feed for their donkeys. 25 They prepared the gift, anticipating Joseph’s arrival at noon, since they had heard that they would have a meal there. 26 When Joseph came into the house, they presented him the gift they had brought with them into the house, and they bowed low in front of him. 27 He asked them how they were and said, “How is your elderly father, about whom you spoke? Is he still alive?”

28 They said, “Your servant our father is fine. He’s still alive.” And they bowed down again with deep respect.

29 Joseph looked up and saw his brother Benjamin, his own mother’s son, and he said, “Is this your youngest brother whom you told me about? God be gracious to you, my son.” 30 Joseph’s feelings for his brother were so strong he was about to weep, so he rushed to another room and wept there. 31 He washed his face, came back, pulled himself together, and said, “Set out the dinner.” 32 So they set out his food by himself, their food by themselves, and the Egyptians’ who ate with him by themselves because Egyptians don’t allow themselves to eat with Hebrews; the Egyptians think it beneath their dignity. 33 They were seated in front of him from the oldest to the youngest in their exact birth order, and the men looked at each other with amazement. 34 Portions of food from Joseph’s table were brought to them, but Benjamin’s portion was five times as large as theirs. So they drank together and were at ease.

Matthew 13:47-14:12

Parable of the net

47 “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net that people threw into the lake and gathered all kinds of fish. 48 When it was full, they pulled it to the shore, where they sat down and put the good fish together into containers. But the bad fish they threw away. 49 That’s the way it will be at the end of the present age. The angels will go out and separate the evil people from the righteous people, 50 and will throw the evil ones into a burning furnace. People there will be weeping and grinding their teeth.

Treasures new and old

51 “Have you understood all these things?” Jesus asked.

They said to him, “Yes.”

52 Then he said to them, “Therefore, every legal expert who has been trained as a disciple for the kingdom of heaven is like the head of a household who brings old and new things out of their treasure chest.”

Jesus in his hometown

53 When Jesus finished these parables, he departed. 54 When he came to his hometown, he taught the people in their synagogue. They were surprised and said, “Where did he get this wisdom? Where did he get the power to work miracles? 55 Isn’t he the carpenter’s son? Isn’t his mother named Mary? Aren’t James, Joseph, Simon, and Judas his brothers? 56 And his sisters, aren’t they here with us? Where did this man get all this?” 57 They were repulsed by him and fell into sin.

But Jesus said to them, “Prophets are honored everywhere except in their own hometowns and in their own households.” 58 He was unable to do many miracles there because of their disbelief.

Death of John the Baptist

14 At that time Herod the ruler[a] heard the news about Jesus. He said to his servants, “This is John the Baptist. He’s been raised from the dead. This is why these miraculous powers are at work through him.” Herod had arrested John, bound him, and put him in prison because of Herodias, the wife of Herod’s brother Philip.

That’s because John told Herod, “It’s against the law for you to marry her.”

Although Herod wanted to kill him, he feared the crowd because they thought John was a prophet. But at Herod’s birthday party Herodias’ daughter danced in front of the guests and thrilled Herod. Then he swore to give her anything she asked.

At her mother’s urging, the girl said, “Give me the head of John the Baptist here on a plate.” Although the king was upset, because of his solemn pledge and his guests he commanded that they give it to her. 10 Then he had John beheaded in prison. 11 They brought his head on a plate and gave it to the young woman, and she brought it to her mother. 12 But John’s disciples came and took his body and buried it. Then they went and told Jesus what had happened.

Psalm 18:16-34

16 From on high God reached down and grabbed me;
he took me out of all that water.
17 God saved me from my powerful enemy,
saved me from my foes,
who were too much for me.
18 They came at me on the very day of my distress,
but the Lord was my support.
19 He brought me out to wide-open spaces;
he pulled me out safe
because he is pleased with me.
20 The Lord rewarded me for my righteousness;
he restored me because my hands are clean,
21 because I have kept the Lord’s ways.
I haven’t acted wickedly against my God.
22 All his rules are right in front of me;
I haven’t turned away from any of his laws.
23 I have lived with integrity before him;
I’ve kept myself from wrongdoing.
24 And so the Lord restored me for my righteousness
because my hands are clean in his eyes.

25 You deal faithfully with the faithful;
you show integrity
toward the one who has integrity.
26 You are pure toward the pure,
but toward the crooked, you are tricky.
27 You are the one who saves people who suffer
and brings down those with proud eyes.
28 You are the one who lights my lamp—
the Lord my God illumines my darkness.
29 With you I can charge into battle;
with my God I can leap over a wall.
30 God! His way is perfect;
the Lord’s word is tried and true.
He is a shield for all who take refuge in him.

31 Now really, who is divine except the Lord?
And who is a rock but our God?
32 Only God! The God who equips me with strength
and makes my way perfect,
33 who makes my step as sure as the deer’s,
who lets me stand securely on the heights,
34 who trains my hands for war
so my arms can bend a bronze bow.

Proverbs 4:7-10

The beginning of wisdom:
Get wisdom!
Get understanding before anything else.
Highly esteem her, and she will exalt you.
She will honor you if you embrace her.
She will place a graceful wreath on your head;
she will give you a glorious crown.”

Stay on the path of wisdom

10 Listen, my son, and take in my speech,
then the years of your life will be many.

Genesis 41:17-42:17, Matthew 13:24-46, Psalms 18:1-15, Proverbs 4:1-6

Today is the 20th day of January. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I am Brian. It is great to be here with you as we close another week down on our journey through the Bible this year. And this week we’ve read from the New Living translation, which is what we will do today. And we’ll pick up with the story of Joseph, who is now standing in front of Pharaoh, who has had a couple of strange dreams. Genesis chapter 41 verses 17 to 42 today.

Prayer:

Father, we thank You for another week in Your word. And we have, as we look back at just these few weeks that we’ve been journeying through the Scriptures this year, we see so much as happened in the Bible, and so much as exploded inside of us for us to consider and think about. We can see You shaping us. We can see You guiding and leading us. We find ourselves in the story of Joseph. And we look at his faithfulness and his allegiance and devotion and loyalty and faithfulness to You in this spite of it all. In spite of everything that’s happening around him, somehow his connection with the You remains untouched. And Holy Spirit, we long for that. And so, come, continue to plant seeds in our lives, continue to cultivate the fruit of the spirit within us, continue to transform us as we surrender to You. Come, Holy Spirit. We pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Hello Daily Audio Bible friends and family. This is Sarah, Building My Faith, in Connecticut. And, yes, I’m still with you and I, too, have been praying along with everyone. I’m so moved. And I think about so many of you and I want to hear from Christie in Kentucky and Victoria S. and Redeemed In Him, I’ve missed your voices. I’m calling on behalf of myself, actually. I need some prayer. I have a legal trial coming up where I have to testify as an expert witness and I have been feeling so stressed out about this because I care so deeply about this patient that I’ve been working with for four years. And I’m testifying as his treater. And the work I have done with him has been so deeply spiritual because he is a very strong Christian. And I’ve been his partner in healing. And so much of what we’ve done has been using his connection with Christ as a way of coping with chronic pain from a very traumatic accident. And, yet, on the stand, I have to testify as a medical professional. I have to use the diagnostic language. I have to keep the God and spiritual aspects out of it. And also, my tendency to go on and on and speak to long, that I need to be very clear and concise. The other part that’s been very anxious making for me is that they won’t let me know when I’m going to be called to testify. It could be anytime from January 23rd

Hi family. This is Purely Pampered of Maine. I’m calling in for our older prayer requests. There is a woman who called a long time ago, you called yourself Leah, you had five children and felt unloved by your husband who was talking divorce. I don’t know what’s changed since then and I don’t know how best to pray for you. So, I pray his heart has seen the gift you are in his life. I’m praying that the Holy Spirit is being received in your situation. Edgar’s wife from Mexico, you called because your husband was kidnapped and you hadn’t heard from him. I’m still praying for you. Yours is a trauma that very few of us will ever experience and I continue to pray for healing, regardless of what has transpired since you called. Bill B., the missionary in Uganda, you had to return to the US for health reasons. I’m lifting you up and your boys in the orphanage that you loved so well. So much they must’ve grown by now. I’m asking for the Lord’s continued provision for them and for you. Let’s pray. Oh, Creator and Sustainer of all, I lift up each of these brothers and sisters and their situations to You. I pray for healing, for restoration, and for Your supernatural peace that goes deeper than their painful situations and brings them hope beyond their circumstances. Thank You Lord for hearing our prayers. Amen. I love you family. Bye for now.

Good morning and happy new year to my precious DAB family. I have now…this is Carla Jean from Southern Nevada. I have now fully listened to a full year of the DAB and I am so blessed to be part of this community. I’m reading this morning, I’m about a week behind because last week I had some abdominal surgery, and so I’m kind of…I’m finally coming out of my fog. So, today I read from the 9th, where Abraham withheld nothing from his heavenly Father. And I’m thinking about what do I withhold from God. My prayer request is this. I have three adult children, one of whom eloped last summer and has no relationship with our family anymore. We did try to make Christmas possible by bringing everything to them to have Christmas at their home. And we haven’t heard from them since. So, I’m praying for her, her daughter, her husband. I also pray for my second son, who has moved to California to pursue his California dream of acting. We don’t hear from him very often and, although I’m very concerned about him, I did learn in the reading today, I just need to turn that over, God is going to put a ram in the thicket for our son, Noah. I’ve been listening to the prayer requests and I just want to say Amen to all of you who have told us to donate to the DAB. I have been donating for a year now, a dollar a day, and this year I hope I can increase that, and I would challenge all of us to do the same. I love you my brothers and sisters. I’m praying for you. Joyce in California, I’m thankful that your family was reunited. Eunice, it’s not a coincidence that your prayer request…

Hi Sophie. I just heard your comment and I just wanted to say, keep going. Things will get better. You saying you have major anxiety, major depression. For myself, I went through that too, you know, it was really, really, really hard. Every day is like a fight, it’s a battle, it’s a challenge. But one thing, once I got to the other side what I really saw was the Scripture that God works all things for the good of those who love Him and to those who have been called to His purpose. You will see that too. God’s on your side. He’s fighting. Keep going strong. All right. Take care. Bye.

Hi __ . I will bless the Lord with all my soul and all that is within me and forget not His benefits. Awake, awake, awake my soul. Most precious holy Father Lord, most high. It’s not ___ a fire Lord or like a hammer that breaks the rocks in pieces. In the name of Jesus Christ from Nazareth I pray, Holy Father for thy people in mind body and spirit. Oh, love of God in the name of Jesus, the mediator of the new covenant into the blood of sprinkling that speak of better things ___. Through thy righteousness we have hope Father, not of ourselves but in the. And the prayer of faith shall fade the __ Lord. And the Lord shall raise Him up and the Lord shall heal Him and if he has committed sins they shall be forgiven. Oh, most gracious Holy One, we give you the glory the honor in the praise, for Thou art our shield and our buckler, our strength in the present help of time of trouble, for we all come by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of our testimony and live not our lives into the death. Lord, at Thy presence for Your majesty and Your glory and forever more. I pray we have mercy and __ in the name of Jesus. Oh, You reign on high over all the earth and sit on the throne of glory and shall never leave or forsake us even to the end of time. Glory, glory, to the Lord.

All glory and praise to our Lord our Savior for Brian and his family, for everyone working behind the scenes in their families, and for this community. This is Bay from Canada and I’m calling in for Lisa the Encourager. Lisa, I have been praying for you since January 8th. Today’s the 12th…yesterday’s the 12th. But I’ve been thinking about you. You keep resurfacing on my mind. And on a recent podcast I heard your prayer request, requesting prayer for your husband. So, family, please pray with me. Father God, Lord Almighty, as the dabblers stand in agreement with me, I pray for my sister Lisa that You will continue to fine-tune her gift of encouragement and to encourage her heart in a special way, that she continue to encourage others. Lord, I ask that You protect her and her family and to provide for them, specifically for Jack, as he seeks employment. Help him during this time of unemployment to get some well needed R&R to prepare him for the journey ahead and to find ways to hone all the skills that he will need for the job that You will provide for him. Enable Lisa and Jack to stay focused on You Lord and to trust You every step of the way for guidance and wisdom. Blanket them with Your love and grace Lord God. I pray this in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Thank you for praying with me family. And, until next time, keep smiling.

The Daily Audio Bible Reading for Saturday January 20, 2018 (NIV)

Genesis 41:17-42

17 So Pharaoh told Joseph his dream. “In my dream,” he said, “I was standing on the bank of the Nile River, 18 and I saw seven fat, healthy cows come up out of the river and begin grazing in the marsh grass. 19 But then I saw seven sick-looking cows, scrawny and thin, come up after them. I’ve never seen such sorry-looking animals in all the land of Egypt. 20 These thin, scrawny cows ate the seven fat cows. 21 But afterward you wouldn’t have known it, for they were still as thin and scrawny as before! Then I woke up.

22 “In my dream I also saw seven heads of grain, full and beautiful, growing on a single stalk. 23 Then seven more heads of grain appeared, but these were blighted, shriveled, and withered by the east wind. 24 And the shriveled heads swallowed the seven healthy heads. I told these dreams to the magicians, but no one could tell me what they mean.”

25 Joseph responded, “Both of Pharaoh’s dreams mean the same thing. God is telling Pharaoh in advance what he is about to do. 26 The seven healthy cows and the seven healthy heads of grain both represent seven years of prosperity. 27 The seven thin, scrawny cows that came up later and the seven thin heads of grain, withered by the east wind, represent seven years of famine.

28 “This will happen just as I have described it, for God has revealed to Pharaoh in advance what he is about to do. 29 The next seven years will be a period of great prosperity throughout the land of Egypt. 30 But afterward there will be seven years of famine so great that all the prosperity will be forgotten in Egypt. Famine will destroy the land. 31 This famine will be so severe that even the memory of the good years will be erased. 32 As for having two similar dreams, it means that these events have been decreed by God, and he will soon make them happen.

33 “Therefore, Pharaoh should find an intelligent and wise man and put him in charge of the entire land of Egypt. 34 Then Pharaoh should appoint supervisors over the land and let them collect one-fifth of all the crops during the seven good years. 35 Have them gather all the food produced in the good years that are just ahead and bring it to Pharaoh’s storehouses. Store it away, and guard it so there will be food in the cities. 36 That way there will be enough to eat when the seven years of famine come to the land of Egypt. Otherwise this famine will destroy the land.”

Joseph Made Ruler of Egypt

37 Joseph’s suggestions were well received by Pharaoh and his officials. 38 So Pharaoh asked his officials, “Can we find anyone else like this man so obviously filled with the spirit of God?” 39 Then Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Since God has revealed the meaning of the dreams to you, clearly no one else is as intelligent or wise as you are. 40 You will be in charge of my court, and all my people will take orders from you. Only I, sitting on my throne, will have a rank higher than yours.”

41 Pharaoh said to Joseph, “I hereby put you in charge of the entire land of Egypt.” 42 Then Pharaoh removed his signet ring from his hand and placed it on Joseph’s finger. He dressed him in fine linen clothing and hung a gold chain around his neck. 43 Then he had Joseph ride in the chariot reserved for his second-in-command. And wherever Joseph went, the command was shouted, “Kneel down!” So Pharaoh put Joseph in charge of all Egypt. 44 And Pharaoh said to him, “I am Pharaoh, but no one will lift a hand or foot in the entire land of Egypt without your approval.”

45 Then Pharaoh gave Joseph a new Egyptian name, Zaphenath-paneah.[a] He also gave him a wife, whose name was Asenath. She was the daughter of Potiphera, the priest of On.[b] So Joseph took charge of the entire land of Egypt. 46 He was thirty years old when he began serving in the court of Pharaoh, the king of Egypt. And when Joseph left Pharaoh’s presence, he inspected the entire land of Egypt.

47 As predicted, for seven years the land produced bumper crops. 48 During those years, Joseph gathered all the crops grown in Egypt and stored the grain from the surrounding fields in the cities. 49 He piled up huge amounts of grain like sand on the seashore. Finally, he stopped keeping records because there was too much to measure.

50 During this time, before the first of the famine years, two sons were born to Joseph and his wife, Asenath, the daughter of Potiphera, the priest of On. 51 Joseph named his older son Manasseh,[c] for he said, “God has made me forget all my troubles and everyone in my father’s family.” 52 Joseph named his second son Ephraim,[d] for he said, “God has made me fruitful in this land of my grief.”

53 At last the seven years of bumper crops throughout the land of Egypt came to an end. 54 Then the seven years of famine began, just as Joseph had predicted. The famine also struck all the surrounding countries, but throughout Egypt there was plenty of food. 55 Eventually, however, the famine spread throughout the land of Egypt as well. And when the people cried out to Pharaoh for food, he told them, “Go to Joseph, and do whatever he tells you.” 56 So with severe famine everywhere, Joseph opened up the storehouses and distributed grain to the Egyptians, for the famine was severe throughout the land of Egypt. 57 And people from all around came to Egypt to buy grain from Joseph because the famine was severe throughout the world.

Joseph’s Brothers Go to Egypt

42 When Jacob heard that grain was available in Egypt, he said to his sons, “Why are you standing around looking at one another? I have heard there is grain in Egypt. Go down there, and buy enough grain to keep us alive. Otherwise we’ll die.”

So Joseph’s ten older brothers went down to Egypt to buy grain. But Jacob wouldn’t let Joseph’s younger brother, Benjamin, go with them, for fear some harm might come to him. So Jacob’s[e] sons arrived in Egypt along with others to buy food, for the famine was in Canaan as well.

Since Joseph was governor of all Egypt and in charge of selling grain to all the people, it was to him that his brothers came. When they arrived, they bowed before him with their faces to the ground. Joseph recognized his brothers instantly, but he pretended to be a stranger and spoke harshly to them. “Where are you from?” he demanded.

“From the land of Canaan,” they replied. “We have come to buy food.”

Although Joseph recognized his brothers, they didn’t recognize him. And he remembered the dreams he’d had about them many years before. He said to them, “You are spies! You have come to see how vulnerable our land has become.”

10 “No, my lord!” they exclaimed. “Your servants have simply come to buy food. 11 We are all brothers—members of the same family. We are honest men, sir! We are not spies!”

12 “Yes, you are!” Joseph insisted. “You have come to see how vulnerable our land has become.”

13 “Sir,” they said, “there are actually twelve of us. We, your servants, are all brothers, sons of a man living in the land of Canaan. Our youngest brother is back there with our father right now, and one of our brothers is no longer with us.”

14 But Joseph insisted, “As I said, you are spies! 15 This is how I will test your story. I swear by the life of Pharaoh that you will never leave Egypt unless your youngest brother comes here! 16 One of you must go and get your brother. I’ll keep the rest of you here in prison. Then we’ll find out whether or not your story is true. By the life of Pharaoh, if it turns out that you don’t have a younger brother, then I’ll know you are spies.”

17 So Joseph put them all in prison for three days.

Matthew 13:24-46

Parable of the Wheat and Weeds

24 Here is another story Jesus told: “The Kingdom of Heaven is like a farmer who planted good seed in his field. 25 But that night as the workers slept, his enemy came and planted weeds among the wheat, then slipped away. 26 When the crop began to grow and produce grain, the weeds also grew.

27 “The farmer’s workers went to him and said, ‘Sir, the field where you planted that good seed is full of weeds! Where did they come from?’

28 “‘An enemy has done this!’ the farmer exclaimed.

“‘Should we pull out the weeds?’ they asked.

29 “‘No,’ he replied, ‘you’ll uproot the wheat if you do. 30 Let both grow together until the harvest. Then I will tell the harvesters to sort out the weeds, tie them into bundles, and burn them, and to put the wheat in the barn.’”

Parable of the Mustard Seed

31 Here is another illustration Jesus used: “The Kingdom of Heaven is like a mustard seed planted in a field. 32 It is the smallest of all seeds, but it becomes the largest of garden plants; it grows into a tree, and birds come and make nests in its branches.”

Parable of the Yeast

33 Jesus also used this illustration: “The Kingdom of Heaven is like the yeast a woman used in making bread. Even though she put only a little yeast in three measures of flour, it permeated every part of the dough.”

34 Jesus always used stories and illustrations like these when speaking to the crowds. In fact, he never spoke to them without using such parables. 35 This fulfilled what God had spoken through the prophet:

“I will speak to you in parables.
I will explain things hidden since the creation of the world.[a]

Parable of the Wheat and Weeds Explained

36 Then, leaving the crowds outside, Jesus went into the house. His disciples said, “Please explain to us the story of the weeds in the field.”

37 Jesus replied, “The Son of Man[b] is the farmer who plants the good seed. 38 The field is the world, and the good seed represents the people of the Kingdom. The weeds are the people who belong to the evil one. 39 The enemy who planted the weeds among the wheat is the devil. The harvest is the end of the world,[c] and the harvesters are the angels.

40 “Just as the weeds are sorted out and burned in the fire, so it will be at the end of the world. 41 The Son of Man will send his angels, and they will remove from his Kingdom everything that causes sin and all who do evil. 42 And the angels will throw them into the fiery furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. 43 Then the righteous will shine like the sun in their Father’s Kingdom. Anyone with ears to hear should listen and understand!

Parables of the Hidden Treasure and the Pearl

44 “The Kingdom of Heaven is like a treasure that a man discovered hidden in a field. In his excitement, he hid it again and sold everything he owned to get enough money to buy the field.

45 “Again, the Kingdom of Heaven is like a merchant on the lookout for choice pearls. 46 When he discovered a pearl of great value, he sold everything he owned and bought it!

Psalm 18:1-15

Psalm 18

For the choir director: A psalm of David, the servant of the Lord. He sang this song to the Lord on the day the Lord rescued him from all his enemies and from Saul. He sang:

I love you, Lord;
you are my strength.
The Lord is my rock, my fortress, and my savior;
my God is my rock, in whom I find protection.
He is my shield, the power that saves me,
and my place of safety.
I called on the Lord, who is worthy of praise,
and he saved me from my enemies.

The ropes of death entangled me;
floods of destruction swept over me.
The grave[a] wrapped its ropes around me;
death laid a trap in my path.
But in my distress I cried out to the Lord;
yes, I prayed to my God for help.
He heard me from his sanctuary;
my cry to him reached his ears.

Then the earth quaked and trembled.
The foundations of the mountains shook;
they quaked because of his anger.
Smoke poured from his nostrils;
fierce flames leaped from his mouth.
Glowing coals blazed forth from him.
He opened the heavens and came down;
dark storm clouds were beneath his feet.
10 Mounted on a mighty angelic being,[b] he flew,
soaring on the wings of the wind.
11 He shrouded himself in darkness,
veiling his approach with dark rain clouds.
12 Thick clouds shielded the brightness around him
and rained down hail and burning coals.[c]
13 The Lord thundered from heaven;
the voice of the Most High resounded
amid the hail and burning coals.
14 He shot his arrows and scattered his enemies;
great bolts of lightning flashed, and they were confused.
15 Then at your command, O Lord,
at the blast of your breath,
the bottom of the sea could be seen,
and the foundations of the earth were laid bare.

Proverbs 4:1-6

A Father’s Wise Advice

My children,[a] listen when your father corrects you.
Pay attention and learn good judgment,
for I am giving you good guidance.
Don’t turn away from my instructions.
For I, too, was once my father’s son,
tenderly loved as my mother’s only child.

My father taught me,
“Take my words to heart.
Follow my commands, and you will live.
Get wisdom; develop good judgment.
Don’t forget my words or turn away from them.
Don’t turn your back on wisdom, for she will protect you.
Love her, and she will guard you.

Genesis 39:1-41:16, Matthew 12:46-13:23, Psalms 17:1-15, Proverbs 3:33-35

Today is January 19th. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I am Brian. It is wonderful to be here with you today from the rolling hills of Tennessee. The global campfire is roaring as always. Nice steamy cup of Wind Farm coffee to my left, all the preflight checks are done, and we are ready to launch into the next day. So, we will pick up where we left off. We’re reading from the New Living Translation this week and that we have begun to follow the story of Joseph in our Old Testament reading from the book of Genesis. And the story of Joseph imitates our lives on so many levels, especially when we feel like we are experiencing some sort of injustice or hardship. And, so we will track with that story as we move through it over the next few days. Today, Genesis chapter 39 verse 1 through 41 verse 16.

Commentary:

Alright, let’s talk about Joseph for a minute. So, Joseph is Jacob’s son by his beloved wife Rachel. Of course, Jacob’s name was changed to Israel. So, Joseph is one of the first children of Israel. And Joseph has a brother, a younger brother, named Benjamin, and this is his only full brother. His other brothers are from different mothers. So, they’re his half-brothers. But Jacob, or Israel, is the father of all of them, all 12 of them. So, Rachel died giving birth to Benjamin. And, so, Joseph and Benjamin are all that Jacob has to remember the wife that he loved. So, he loved Joseph, and he favored Joseph, which made a bunch of jealousy among the other brothers. So, we know how the story goes. Joseph has these dreams that just inflames the matter. And, finally, Joseph is coming to see his brothers to report back to his father how they’re doing. And they human traffic their own brother into slavery. Okay. So, terribly unjust. An injustice has been done to Joseph. And on his trip down to Egypt he has every reason to be bitter, angry, angry at his family, angry at God, angry at everything. When he gets to Egypt he’s sold as a slave. So, Joseph becomes the slave of Potiphar. And, so, rather than brooding and being angry and being divisive and trying to escape, Joseph simply trusts God and does his best where he’s at, which, fairly, quickly, puts Joseph in charge of everything that Potiphar owns. So, not a life of freedom, definitely he’s a slave, but he has a lot of freedom, and he’s in charge of a lot, and he has a lot of influence. So, maybe he can make that work, except Potiphar’s wife wants Joseph. So, he’s a young, good-looking, well-built man. She sees this opportunity and she wants him, but he won’t sleep with her. So, he’s subsequently, falsely accused, and he goes from being a slave to being a prisoner in a dungeon. So, Joseph is doing everything right and things are only getting worse and that might sound familiar. You may have walked through seasons that felt like that. So, we have to ask ourselves, what is our response more in a season like that? Are we yelling at God and shaking our fists and jumping up and down and flailing around and trying to figure out in our own strength how were going to make this work out in our favor? That’s just not what Joseph…that’s just not how he responded. He kept a cool head in all of these circumstances that were pretty dire and completely unfair and he did not waver in his trust for God. Even in the injustice, his allegiance to God was unwavering and it gives us some things to think about. This story isn’t over. We have plenty to read in it and there’s plenty of drama out in front of us. But right now, we can see that Joseph’s response to complete injustice, like over the top injustice, is that his faith in God is unwavering and we’ll see where that road leads over the coming days.

Prayer:

Father, we thank You for Your word. And we thank You how every day, it brings up something in us. It gives us plenty to think about, plenty to learn, and we are. We are we are learning, we are drinking it up, and we invite Your Holy Spirit to continue just to till the soil of our hearts and plant Your word in it so that a vast crop of the fruit of the Spirit comes spilling out of our lives. And may what You are planting inside of us yield a hundredfold return for Your kingdom. We ask in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Hi. This is God’s Precious Gem in New Jersey. I’m just reaching out. This is the first time. I’ve been listening to the Daily Audio Bible about four months now. And I feel like it was time to reach out for prayer for my daughter. She’s been battling mental illness for a few years and she…my brother passed earlier last year…and she’s been spiraling down since that time and going as far as walking into the woods and falling asleep, then being picked up by the police with hypothermia. Anyway, she’s been having these really bad episodes. Finally, I had to do an intervention and have her picked up. And she was taken for an assessment and put on medication, but it’s having a weird effect on her. I pray for her every day but she started stealing from me, she said she cannot go outside because there’s too many people. She grew up in church but no longer goes. She says she’s __ or psychic and has all these weird beliefs, and that she hears all the voices in the world, people’s minds and thoughts. So, I’m asking for prayer for her because I feel like I can’t do this alone. Like I said, she started stealing from me now and she said she can eat regular food, just like boxed frozen foods. The medication is having a weird effect on her. I appreciate all of you and I pray along with you in the mornings after listening to the…you know…the readings and then the requests. I love the teaching. Thank you so much Brian. May God bless you. May He multiply all that you have and bless your family and children. I love you and just want to thank you. God bless you all. Bye.

Hey everybody. This is Pelham in Birmingham or Addicted to Christ. I was just calling to catch everybody up. The food truck suddenly closed and just blessed with finding a job quickly. The pay is much less. Not going to be able…no going…the budgets not working for the bills as the way they were when I was on a successful…a very successful business, but I been given a good position and things are going well but I’m…it’s a struggle…and you know…I’m calling in because the Scripture I was reading, ‘be alert in your sober mind because your enemy, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him standing firm in the faith because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of suffering.’ And as soon as I heard those words, all of you all came into my mind, like points of light across the world, and the sudden need to call and tell you all that I need help, that the Morris family needs prayer, that I need strength and wisdom and I need…I just need prayer…we need prayer here. My coworker Mary needs prayer. Her sister passed and she’s been having a hard time, her name, I can’t remember her name, and my other coworker, Lori, has a girlfriend, Amy. Amy needs prayer. So, anyway, I was just calling to catch you all about how things are going. I love you all and stay in the word. And I’m listening. I’m out here.

Hi beautiful DAB family this is Sonja from Tampa. I guess some calling a little bit more, well, I very seldom call, actually, but I wanted to thank all the beautiful people that are praying for my son Nathan whose 30 and is quite depressed. The response was unbelievable and I was so moved by my family, my extended family, that I just needed to call and just thank you so much for your kindness and your prayers. May God continue to bless this ministry. And I’m so glad that I finally took the time to give to this ministry and for those that haven’t, I beg of you to please give. It’s amazing what this community is doing. Thank you, Brian, and Jill, and China and everyone else. Love you and God bless you.

Father God, thank You for this new day. Thank You for what You’ve laid out for us. I pray Lord, that You’d be guiding our feet and guarding our footsteps where You’d want us to go. Father God there are many things in our lives that stress us out that are sources of anxiety and panic to us Lord. To some of us Lord it’s our workplace and what goes on at work and I pray. I lift up, Lord, I lift up our places of work to You and I commit those places to You. Thank You for those that are in employment Lord we thank You for what we have there. Also Lord, thank You for the opportunities we have to be shining lights in these places Lord. Father God, I pray that You would go before us each and every day into our workplace and just prepare that day for us, that would be able to be a blessing to our work colleagues, and allow them to be a blessing to us in turn. Father God, help us fix our eyes on You so when were faced with that daunting task or that daunting situation that we are really not looking forward to, we can see You in it, and You can guide us through it and break it down into something more manageable. Father God, You are so Sovereign, You are Lord, You love us, and You don’t give us anything that we can’t do. I pray Lord that You give us what we need to face this day and that we will be able to trust and rely on You. In Jesus name. Amen. Beloved by Him. __ . It’s Monday, 15th of January and, thank you guys you are all awesome, thank you so much for your prayers and your comments. It’s awesome being part of this community. Hope you have a blessed day wherever you are. Bye.

Yes. This is Sue calling from Kansas. I have a prayer request and a thankfulness. I have just started listening since the new year and so appreciate Brian’s strength and sensitivity in reading the Bible to us all. I love to listen and I appreciate the comments Brian gives at the end. I think they are excellent. I look forward, enjoy, and benefit a lot from the reading each day. The prayer request I have is from me and my ex-husband. I had to get away from my husband a year ago because he was always getting destroyed emotionally due to verbal battering. He divorced me and now I live in his old house that was awarded in the divorce. Please pray for me that my focus would be on Jesus and His life instead of my ex-husband in the memory of the hurtful destructive things he said and did. I forgive with my will every time I think of him and gradually the pain and disappointment is getting less and less. I’m beginning to understand why God allowed him in my life. I’ve had a bad habit in the past of resenting and not forgiving people. God has shown me where that was taking me. I realize my ex-husband nursed his resentment and hatred of people and God in the past to the point that his heart was full of hatred and meanness. He was a very unhappy person. That is where I was headed. Now I’m trying, every day without the Scripture, to not be conformed to this world but be transformed by the renewal of my mind. So, I with the help of the Holy Spirit in Scripture will prove how good, acceptable, and perfect the word of God is. Please pray for me that God will do a wonderful work in my heart and mind so instead of having defeated thinking I can see in the years to come an eternity that no good thing will He withhold from me as I walk uprightly. Please pray for my ex-husband too, that he will listen to the Daily Audio Bible and will realize his error and get sick and tired of having a hateful meaning heart.

The Daily Audio Bible Reading for Friday January 19, 2018 (NIV)

Genesis 39:1-41:16

Joseph in Potiphar’s House

39 When Joseph was taken to Egypt by the Ishmaelite traders, he was purchased by Potiphar, an Egyptian officer. Potiphar was captain of the guard for Pharaoh, the king of Egypt.

The Lord was with Joseph, so he succeeded in everything he did as he served in the home of his Egyptian master. Potiphar noticed this and realized that the Lord was with Joseph, giving him success in everything he did. This pleased Potiphar, so he soon made Joseph his personal attendant. He put him in charge of his entire household and everything he owned. From the day Joseph was put in charge of his master’s household and property, the Lord began to bless Potiphar’s household for Joseph’s sake. All his household affairs ran smoothly, and his crops and livestock flourished. So Potiphar gave Joseph complete administrative responsibility over everything he owned. With Joseph there, he didn’t worry about a thing—except what kind of food to eat!

Joseph was a very handsome and well-built young man, and Potiphar’s wife soon began to look at him lustfully. “Come and sleep with me,” she demanded.

But Joseph refused. “Look,” he told her, “my master trusts me with everything in his entire household. No one here has more authority than I do. He has held back nothing from me except you, because you are his wife. How could I do such a wicked thing? It would be a great sin against God.”

10 She kept putting pressure on Joseph day after day, but he refused to sleep with her, and he kept out of her way as much as possible. 11 One day, however, no one else was around when he went in to do his work. 12 She came and grabbed him by his cloak, demanding, “Come on, sleep with me!” Joseph tore himself away, but he left his cloak in her hand as he ran from the house.

13 When she saw that she was holding his cloak and he had fled, 14 she called out to her servants. Soon all the men came running. “Look!” she said. “My husband has brought this Hebrew slave here to make fools of us! He came into my room to rape me, but I screamed. 15 When he heard me scream, he ran outside and got away, but he left his cloak behind with me.”

16 She kept the cloak with her until her husband came home. 17 Then she told him her story. “That Hebrew slave you’ve brought into our house tried to come in and fool around with me,” she said. 18 “But when I screamed, he ran outside, leaving his cloak with me!”

Joseph Put in Prison

19 Potiphar was furious when he heard his wife’s story about how Joseph had treated her. 20 So he took Joseph and threw him into the prison where the king’s prisoners were held, and there he remained. 21 But the Lord was with Joseph in the prison and showed him his faithful love. And the Lord made Joseph a favorite with the prison warden. 22 Before long, the warden put Joseph in charge of all the other prisoners and over everything that happened in the prison. 23 The warden had no more worries, because Joseph took care of everything. The Lord was with him and caused everything he did to succeed.

Joseph Interprets Two Dreams

40 Some time later, Pharaoh’s chief cup-bearer and chief baker offended their royal master. Pharaoh became angry with these two officials, and he put them in the prison where Joseph was, in the palace of the captain of the guard. They remained in prison for quite some time, and the captain of the guard assigned them to Joseph, who looked after them.

While they were in prison, Pharaoh’s cup-bearer and baker each had a dream one night, and each dream had its own meaning. When Joseph saw them the next morning, he noticed that they both looked upset. “Why do you look so worried today?” he asked them.

And they replied, “We both had dreams last night, but no one can tell us what they mean.”

“Interpreting dreams is God’s business,” Joseph replied. “Go ahead and tell me your dreams.”

So the chief cup-bearer told Joseph his dream first. “In my dream,” he said, “I saw a grapevine in front of me. 10 The vine had three branches that began to bud and blossom, and soon it produced clusters of ripe grapes. 11 I was holding Pharaoh’s wine cup in my hand, so I took a cluster of grapes and squeezed the juice into the cup. Then I placed the cup in Pharaoh’s hand.”

12 “This is what the dream means,” Joseph said. “The three branches represent three days. 13 Within three days Pharaoh will lift you up and restore you to your position as his chief cup-bearer. 14 And please remember me and do me a favor when things go well for you. Mention me to Pharaoh, so he might let me out of this place. 15 For I was kidnapped from my homeland, the land of the Hebrews, and now I’m here in prison, but I did nothing to deserve it.”

16 When the chief baker saw that Joseph had given the first dream such a positive interpretation, he said to Joseph, “I had a dream, too. In my dream there were three baskets of white pastries stacked on my head. 17 The top basket contained all kinds of pastries for Pharaoh, but the birds came and ate them from the basket on my head.”

18 “This is what the dream means,” Joseph told him. “The three baskets also represent three days. 19 Three days from now Pharaoh will lift you up and impale your body on a pole. Then birds will come and peck away at your flesh.”

20 Pharaoh’s birthday came three days later, and he prepared a banquet for all his officials and staff. He summoned[a] his chief cup-bearer and chief baker to join the other officials. 21 He then restored the chief cup-bearer to his former position, so he could again hand Pharaoh his cup. 22 But Pharaoh impaled the chief baker, just as Joseph had predicted when he interpreted his dream. 23 Pharaoh’s chief cup-bearer, however, forgot all about Joseph, never giving him another thought.

Pharaoh’s Dreams

41 Two full years later, Pharaoh dreamed that he was standing on the bank of the Nile River. In his dream he saw seven fat, healthy cows come up out of the river and begin grazing in the marsh grass. Then he saw seven more cows come up behind them from the Nile, but these were scrawny and thin. These cows stood beside the fat cows on the riverbank. Then the scrawny, thin cows ate the seven healthy, fat cows! At this point in the dream, Pharaoh woke up.

But he fell asleep again and had a second dream. This time he saw seven heads of grain, plump and beautiful, growing on a single stalk. Then seven more heads of grain appeared, but these were shriveled and withered by the east wind. And these thin heads swallowed up the seven plump, well-formed heads! Then Pharaoh woke up again and realized it was a dream.

The next morning Pharaoh was very disturbed by the dreams. So he called for all the magicians and wise men of Egypt. When Pharaoh told them his dreams, not one of them could tell him what they meant.

Finally, the king’s chief cup-bearer spoke up. “Today I have been reminded of my failure,” he told Pharaoh. 10 “Some time ago, you were angry with the chief baker and me, and you imprisoned us in the palace of the captain of the guard. 11 One night the chief baker and I each had a dream, and each dream had its own meaning. 12 There was a young Hebrew man with us in the prison who was a slave of the captain of the guard. We told him our dreams, and he told us what each of our dreams meant. 13 And everything happened just as he had predicted. I was restored to my position as cup-bearer, and the chief baker was executed and impaled on a pole.”

14 Pharaoh sent for Joseph at once, and he was quickly brought from the prison. After he shaved and changed his clothes, he went in and stood before Pharaoh. 15 Then Pharaoh said to Joseph, “I had a dream last night, and no one here can tell me what it means. But I have heard that when you hear about a dream you can interpret it.”

16 “It is beyond my power to do this,” Joseph replied. “But God can tell you what it means and set you at ease.”

Matthew 12:46-13:23

The True Family of Jesus

46 As Jesus was speaking to the crowd, his mother and brothers stood outside, asking to speak to him. 47 Someone told Jesus, “Your mother and your brothers are standing outside, and they want to speak to you.”[a]

48 Jesus asked, “Who is my mother? Who are my brothers?” 49 Then he pointed to his disciples and said, “Look, these are my mother and brothers. 50 Anyone who does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother!”

Parable of the Farmer Scattering Seed

13 Later that same day Jesus left the house and sat beside the lake. A large crowd soon gathered around him, so he got into a boat. Then he sat there and taught as the people stood on the shore. He told many stories in the form of parables, such as this one:

“Listen! A farmer went out to plant some seeds. As he scattered them across his field, some seeds fell on a footpath, and the birds came and ate them. Other seeds fell on shallow soil with underlying rock. The seeds sprouted quickly because the soil was shallow. But the plants soon wilted under the hot sun, and since they didn’t have deep roots, they died. Other seeds fell among thorns that grew up and choked out the tender plants. Still other seeds fell on fertile soil, and they produced a crop that was thirty, sixty, and even a hundred times as much as had been planted! Anyone with ears to hear should listen and understand.”

10 His disciples came and asked him, “Why do you use parables when you talk to the people?”

11 He replied, “You are permitted to understand the secrets[b] of the Kingdom of Heaven, but others are not. 12 To those who listen to my teaching, more understanding will be given, and they will have an abundance of knowledge. But for those who are not listening, even what little understanding they have will be taken away from them. 13 That is why I use these parables,

For they look, but they don’t really see.
They hear, but they don’t really listen or understand.

14 This fulfills the prophecy of Isaiah that says,

‘When you hear what I say,
you will not understand.
When you see what I do,
you will not comprehend.
15 For the hearts of these people are hardened,
and their ears cannot hear,
and they have closed their eyes—
so their eyes cannot see,
and their ears cannot hear,
and their hearts cannot understand,
and they cannot turn to me
and let me heal them.’[c]

16 “But blessed are your eyes, because they see; and your ears, because they hear. 17 I tell you the truth, many prophets and righteous people longed to see what you see, but they didn’t see it. And they longed to hear what you hear, but they didn’t hear it.

18 “Now listen to the explanation of the parable about the farmer planting seeds: 19 The seed that fell on the footpath represents those who hear the message about the Kingdom and don’t understand it. Then the evil one comes and snatches away the seed that was planted in their hearts. 20 The seed on the rocky soil represents those who hear the message and immediately receive it with joy. 21 But since they don’t have deep roots, they don’t last long. They fall away as soon as they have problems or are persecuted for believing God’s word. 22 The seed that fell among the thorns represents those who hear God’s word, but all too quickly the message is crowded out by the worries of this life and the lure of wealth, so no fruit is produced. 23 The seed that fell on good soil represents those who truly hear and understand God’s word and produce a harvest of thirty, sixty, or even a hundred times as much as had been planted!”

Psalm 17

Psalm 17

A prayer of David.

O Lord, hear my plea for justice.
Listen to my cry for help.
Pay attention to my prayer,
for it comes from honest lips.
Declare me innocent,
for you see those who do right.

You have tested my thoughts and examined my heart in the night.
You have scrutinized me and found nothing wrong.
I am determined not to sin in what I say.
I have followed your commands,
which keep me from following cruel and evil people.
My steps have stayed on your path;
I have not wavered from following you.

I am praying to you because I know you will answer, O God.
Bend down and listen as I pray.
Show me your unfailing love in wonderful ways.
By your mighty power you rescue
those who seek refuge from their enemies.
Guard me as you would guard your own eyes.[a]
Hide me in the shadow of your wings.
Protect me from wicked people who attack me,
from murderous enemies who surround me.
10 They are without pity.
Listen to their boasting!
11 They track me down and surround me,
watching for the chance to throw me to the ground.
12 They are like hungry lions, eager to tear me apart—
like young lions hiding in ambush.

13 Arise, O Lord!
Stand against them, and bring them to their knees!
Rescue me from the wicked with your sword!
14 By the power of your hand, O Lord,
destroy those who look to this world for their reward.
But satisfy the hunger of your treasured ones.
May their children have plenty,
leaving an inheritance for their descendants.
15 Because I am righteous, I will see you.
When I awake, I will see you face to face and be satisfied.

Today is January 18th. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I am Brian and it is a pleasure to be here with you for the next step forward in our week, in our month, in our year, in the Bible. And to take that next step, we will continue doing what we’ve been doing this week, we will read from the New Living Translation and we’ll pick up where we left off yesterday. Today we will read Genesis chapter 37 and chapter 38 in our Old Testament reading.

Commentary:

Okay. So, Jesus is having another confrontation with the religious leaders, ironically, because he offered healing to someone. He set a person who was oppressed by demonic activity free and the people who witnessed this, they’re seeing it for what it is, a move of God, and they’re asking themselves, could Jesus be the one? But somehow this is not the question that the Pharisees, the religious leaders, are asking at all. And when they find out about it they say, no wonder He can cast out demons, He gets His power from Satan, the prince of demons. And part of Jesus response is that every sin and blasphemy can be forgiven except blasphemy against the Holy Spirit, which will never be forgiven. So, I grew up in a pastor’s home. So, I’ve been around the Bible my whole life and I had heard this Scripture as a kid and this particular scripture was terrifying to me because this is the unpardonable sin, as it was called, at least until his days. But I could never really understand what blasphemy was and especially blasphemy against the Holy Spirit. Like, how could I, as a little kid, know whether that had happened, but if it had happened, well then, I was doomed. So, it’s one of the Scriptures that had me down at the altar a lot. Thankfully, it’s not quite as confusing as I had made it as a kid. However, what Jesus is saying is cautionary indeed, and we may find that we been way closer to this than would be comfortable. So, Jesus healed a person who was oppressed by demonic activity. He set this person free. And in response the Pharisees do not give glory to God for this freedom or for the good that is happening in the world that is following Jesus wherever He goes. Instead, they’re saying, His authority and His power comes from Satan. So, Jesus basically just feeds the logic back to them, any kingdom divided by civil war is doomed. A town or family splintered by feuding will fall apart. And if Satan is casting out Satan, he’s divided in fighting against himself, his own kingdom won’t survive. And if I’m empowered by Satan, what about the stuff you’re doing? You’re doing this too. So, none of what you’re saying is making any sense. A tree is identified by its fruit. If a tree is good, its fruit will be good, but if the tree is bad its fruit will be bad. So, He’s basically saying, a person just got set free here, free from the torment of the devil, and yet you are telling me that by the devil I have participated in this. And that is blasphemy. You’ve labeled the work of God as the work of the devil. And as long as you’re believing and saying that, it’s an unforgivable thing. You’re denying the power of God. You’re denying God and attributing this to the devil. Okay, so now that we’ve got that clear, how does that come close to our own lives? Well let’s think about our own faith journey. We believe what we believe. And then we surround ourselves with people who believe the same way that we do. And, overtime, we can lock ourselves in saying, God only works this way, and we are the only ones who actually have it right. Everybody else, maybe not so much to varying degrees. But what happens when God starts to move outside of our box? What happens when God starts to use someone who doesn’t think the same way that we do, maybe doesn’t believe quite the same way that we do? Well, as Jesus said, any kingdom divided by civil war is doomed. A town or family splintered by feuding will fall apart. So, if we find ourselves condemning someone for doing God’s work, and the fruit bears out, but they just happened to see things a bit different than we do, then we’re taking on the role of the Pharisee in the story. And if we want to serve ourselves best and God’s kingdom best, then we would we would do well to tread lightly, understanding that we don’t have a say in the matter. Nothing is going to make us the judge. And when we elevate ourselves above God in the matter, that’s blasphemy. And when we call what God is doing, no matter who he chooses to do it through or how he chooses to do it, and we call it of the devil, that’s blasphemy. And, unfortunately, there’s a lot of that flying around all of the time. It’s backward to what Jesus is teaching us, which is, that our primary sense of identity isn’t found in anyone else or any set of beliefs or any traditions or any rituals. It’s found in a direct relationship with God through Jesus. And if we are walking with God, intimately, then we won’t find ourselves judging everyone and everything that doesn’t line up with our box. If our agenda is to bring light and life and good news into this world and to be true and to endure until the end, whenever and however that is, then we will be able to recognize what God is doing around us, even if it’s completely counterintuitive to what we think we know, or as Jesus said, if a tree is good its fruit will be good. So, we have an invitation here to climb down off of our soapboxes and walk a little bit more humbly among each other, because we don’t want to be calling what God is doing something of the devil as the Pharisees were doing to Jesus.

Prayer:

Father, we enter into that. We realize that there is much room for humility and grace and we acknowledge that the grace that You have offered to us is beyond our capacity to offer to anyone else. And, so, the least that we can do is imitate You, our Father, and offer mercy and grace everywhere, and to re-center ourselves in You and You alone. So, come Holy Spirit. We pray in Jesus’ name, we ask. Amen.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Hi family. Happy new year. This is Viola from Maryland. I hope you are doing well. __ God bless you. It’s a brand-new year as well. The Lord is working wonders. Family I want to pray for the brother that said he was struggling with opioids. Brother, I heard your prayer request and I know I haven’t called in a while but every time I listen and I hear prayer requests I pray fervently. I was listening to the podcast and just got to listen to that thank you poem that someone was reading and then Vicki your message came on about your son taking his life. And I just want to pray for you Vicki. I can’t imagine anything worse. So, I know that so many of us, whether we’re parents are not, our hearts are just with you and your sons little girl. So, Lord God, thank You for all the brothers and sisters out there who are tied, whose hearts are tied in with Vicki’s through You Lord Jesus. Father God we together as a family lift up our sister and we ask You God just to be with her and us in a very strong, clear way, Lord God. Give her comfort that we know no one else can give her this time Father God. Lord God just bring her peace that that rises above all understanding. Lord, I lift up that little girl to You and I pray Lord that you would break any curse that the enemy has over that family Lord, that it would not touch this child, that it would not touch future generations. Lord, our hearts just go out as we ask You to just surround this woman and this whole family Lord in this time of mourning. You tell us to rejoice with those who rejoice and to mourn with those who mourn. Lord God we mourn with our sister and entrust her into Your hands. In Jesus name. Amen.

Pray with me family. Our God we come to You to pray for Bayer our brother over in the north-western front. We ask Lord that Your piece, Your clarity, and Your love of family Lord would come into his life, holy and truly Lord. That he would abound in joy in the goodness of who You are father. I pray Your love in the hearts of all his family Father, that You would come and reconcile all things unto that love Father for the glory of Your kingdom. It is true that love indeed conquers all. Slave of Jesus, shout out, and Ed in Oklahoma, Blind Tony, Mark and Mike J. in Australia, and to all my 2010 and 2012 Wild at Heart event brothers, you warriors, you __ to __. Shout out. Love you guys. Brian, family, love you, great work. China, you’re doing a great work with Chronological. Really enjoying it. Just…sorry Just I haven’t called as much. This is Delta Alpha Foxtrot calling from the southern Texas front. God bless you all.

This is and from Charlotte North Carolina. I wanted to call about generosity and encourage myself and all of us in the community to be courageously generous in the coming year, not to be frightened about being generous, but to test God, to believe God’s promises, which are so overflowing, about generosity. He promises that if we test Him that He will open the windows of heaven and if we water we ourselves will be water. He says not to rob Him. There are so many promises with generosity and we can out give God. I’m reminding myself and all of us of this. I want to encourage all of us of be sure to give to our local church, which is just the foundation of our community, and to give something to the Daily Audio Bible. And others have called and said, and I want to echo that, $5, $10, $2, as much as you can, do something, even the cost of a cup of coffee every month, because it costs just to keep the equipment rolling. We don’t think of those behind the scene things, keeping the lights on, keeping the equipment going. My husband is a musician and I know people don’t realize the cost of just him keeping his equipment going to bless people with his music. So, may we all overflow with generosity in new and courageous ways and see God do amazing things for us. We ask Him for that in Jesus name. Amen.

Good morning DABbers. This is Kristin from San Antonio Texas and on the first-time caller. I’ve been listening on and off for about two years now and one of my New Year’s resolutions is to listen all the way through, while taking Brian’s advice, and journaling my day-to-day thoughts and experiences. I can tell you so far that God is definitely on fire and moving in my life in so many ways. I want to thank Brian and his family for this resource and just following God’s plan and bringing about, you know, the Daily Audio Bible app to so many people out there. It truly been such a blessing. I deftly believe in the power of prayer and I want to ask for all of you to just pray for my company, KFW engineers, that God will open doors and opportunities for our company, its leaders, and employees to just witness a change in KFW’s culture as a whole. And that it may not be a playground for the enemy to play in. I pray for more opportunities to just share my faith without fear and lead more people to Christ. I also want to ask for prayer for myself and that they may be steadfast in my relationship with our Father and that my alcohol dependency be completely relieved. I am so thankful for this community and I thank God for each and every one of you out there listening. May He bless you and draw you closer to His plan for Your life each and every day. Thanks everyone. I love you guys. Bye. Have a great day.

Genesis 37-38

Joseph’s Dreams

37 So Jacob settled again in the land of Canaan, where his father had lived as a foreigner.

This is the account of Jacob and his family. When Joseph was seventeen years old, he often tended his father’s flocks. He worked for his half brothers, the sons of his father’s wives Bilhah and Zilpah. But Joseph reported to his father some of the bad things his brothers were doing.

Jacob[a] loved Joseph more than any of his other children because Joseph had been born to him in his old age. So one day Jacob had a special gift made for Joseph—a beautiful robe.[b] But his brothers hated Joseph because their father loved him more than the rest of them. They couldn’t say a kind word to him.

One night Joseph had a dream, and when he told his brothers about it, they hated him more than ever. “Listen to this dream,” he said. “We were out in the field, tying up bundles of grain. Suddenly my bundle stood up, and your bundles all gathered around and bowed low before mine!”

His brothers responded, “So you think you will be our king, do you? Do you actually think you will reign over us?” And they hated him all the more because of his dreams and the way he talked about them.

Soon Joseph had another dream, and again he told his brothers about it. “Listen, I have had another dream,” he said. “The sun, moon, and eleven stars bowed low before me!”

10 This time he told the dream to his father as well as to his brothers, but his father scolded him. “What kind of dream is that?” he asked. “Will your mother and I and your brothers actually come and bow to the ground before you?” 11 But while his brothers were jealous of Joseph, his father wondered what the dreams meant.

12 Soon after this, Joseph’s brothers went to pasture their father’s flocks at Shechem. 13 When they had been gone for some time, Jacob said to Joseph, “Your brothers are pasturing the sheep at Shechem. Get ready, and I will send you to them.”

“I’m ready to go,” Joseph replied.

14 “Go and see how your brothers and the flocks are getting along,” Jacob said. “Then come back and bring me a report.” So Jacob sent him on his way, and Joseph traveled to Shechem from their home in the valley of Hebron.

15 When he arrived there, a man from the area noticed him wandering around the countryside. “What are you looking for?” he asked.

16 “I’m looking for my brothers,” Joseph replied. “Do you know where they are pasturing their sheep?”

17 “Yes,” the man told him. “They have moved on from here, but I heard them say, ‘Let’s go on to Dothan.’” So Joseph followed his brothers to Dothan and found them there.

Joseph Sold into Slavery

18 When Joseph’s brothers saw him coming, they recognized him in the distance. As he approached, they made plans to kill him. 19 “Here comes the dreamer!” they said. 20 “Come on, let’s kill him and throw him into one of these cisterns. We can tell our father, ‘A wild animal has eaten him.’ Then we’ll see what becomes of his dreams!”

21 But when Reuben heard of their scheme, he came to Joseph’s rescue. “Let’s not kill him,” he said. 22 “Why should we shed any blood? Let’s just throw him into this empty cistern here in the wilderness. Then he’ll die without our laying a hand on him.” Reuben was secretly planning to rescue Joseph and return him to his father.

23 So when Joseph arrived, his brothers ripped off the beautiful robe he was wearing. 24 Then they grabbed him and threw him into the cistern. Now the cistern was empty; there was no water in it. 25 Then, just as they were sitting down to eat, they looked up and saw a caravan of camels in the distance coming toward them. It was a group of Ishmaelite traders taking a load of gum, balm, and aromatic resin from Gilead down to Egypt.

26 Judah said to his brothers, “What will we gain by killing our brother? We’d have to cover up the crime.[c] 27 Instead of hurting him, let’s sell him to those Ishmaelite traders. After all, he is our brother—our own flesh and blood!” And his brothers agreed. 28 So when the Ishmaelites, who were Midianite traders, came by, Joseph’s brothers pulled him out of the cistern and sold him to them for twenty pieces[d] of silver. And the traders took him to Egypt.

29 Some time later, Reuben returned to get Joseph out of the cistern. When he discovered that Joseph was missing, he tore his clothes in grief. 30 Then he went back to his brothers and lamented, “The boy is gone! What will I do now?”

31 Then the brothers killed a young goat and dipped Joseph’s robe in its blood. 32 They sent the beautiful robe to their father with this message: “Look at what we found. Doesn’t this robe belong to your son?”

33 Their father recognized it immediately. “Yes,” he said, “it is my son’s robe. A wild animal must have eaten him. Joseph has clearly been torn to pieces!” 34 Then Jacob tore his clothes and dressed himself in burlap. He mourned deeply for his son for a long time. 35 His family all tried to comfort him, but he refused to be comforted. “I will go to my grave[e] mourning for my son,” he would say, and then he would weep.

36 Meanwhile, the Midianite traders[f] arrived in Egypt, where they sold Joseph to Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh, the king of Egypt. Potiphar was captain of the palace guard.

Judah and Tamar

38 About this time, Judah left home and moved to Adullam, where he stayed with a man named Hirah. There he saw a Canaanite woman, the daughter of Shua, and he married her. When he slept with her, she became pregnant and gave birth to a son, and he named the boy Er. Then she became pregnant again and gave birth to another son, and she named him Onan. And when she gave birth to a third son, she named him Shelah. At the time of Shelah’s birth, they were living at Kezib.

In the course of time, Judah arranged for his firstborn son, Er, to marry a young woman named Tamar. But Er was a wicked man in the Lord’s sight, so the Lord took his life. Then Judah said to Er’s brother Onan, “Go and marry Tamar, as our law requires of the brother of a man who has died. You must produce an heir for your brother.”

But Onan was not willing to have a child who would not be his own heir. So whenever he had intercourse with his brother’s wife, he spilled the semen on the ground. This prevented her from having a child who would belong to his brother. 10 But the Lord considered it evil for Onan to deny a child to his dead brother. So the Lord took Onan’s life, too.

11 Then Judah said to Tamar, his daughter-in-law, “Go back to your parents’ home and remain a widow until my son Shelah is old enough to marry you.” (But Judah didn’t really intend to do this because he was afraid Shelah would also die, like his two brothers.) So Tamar went back to live in her father’s home.

12 Some years later Judah’s wife died. After the time of mourning was over, Judah and his friend Hirah the Adullamite went up to Timnah to supervise the shearing of his sheep. 13 Someone told Tamar, “Look, your father-in-law is going up to Timnah to shear his sheep.”

14 Tamar was aware that Shelah had grown up, but no arrangements had been made for her to come and marry him. So she changed out of her widow’s clothing and covered herself with a veil to disguise herself. Then she sat beside the road at the entrance to the village of Enaim, which is on the road to Timnah. 15 Judah noticed her and thought she was a prostitute, since she had covered her face. 16 So he stopped and propositioned her. “Let me have sex with you,” he said, not realizing that she was his own daughter-in-law.

“How much will you pay to have sex with me?” Tamar asked.

17 “I’ll send you a young goat from my flock,” Judah promised.

“But what will you give me to guarantee that you will send the goat?” she asked.

18 “What kind of guarantee do you want?” he replied.

She answered, “Leave me your identification seal and its cord and the walking stick you are carrying.” So Judah gave them to her. Then he had intercourse with her, and she became pregnant. 19 Afterward she went back home, took off her veil, and put on her widow’s clothing as usual.

20 Later Judah asked his friend Hirah the Adullamite to take the young goat to the woman and to pick up the things he had given her as his guarantee. But Hirah couldn’t find her. 21 So he asked the men who lived there, “Where can I find the shrine prostitute who was sitting beside the road at the entrance to Enaim?”

“We’ve never had a shrine prostitute here,” they replied.

22 So Hirah returned to Judah and told him, “I couldn’t find her anywhere, and the men of the village claim they’ve never had a shrine prostitute there.”

23 “Then let her keep the things I gave her,” Judah said. “I sent the young goat as we agreed, but you couldn’t find her. We’d be the laughingstock of the village if we went back again to look for her.”

24 About three months later, Judah was told, “Tamar, your daughter-in-law, has acted like a prostitute. And now, because of this, she’s pregnant.”

“Bring her out, and let her be burned!” Judah demanded.

25 But as they were taking her out to kill her, she sent this message to her father-in-law: “The man who owns these things made me pregnant. Look closely. Whose seal and cord and walking stick are these?”

26 Judah recognized them immediately and said, “She is more righteous than I am, because I didn’t arrange for her to marry my son Shelah.” And Judah never slept with Tamar again.

27 When the time came for Tamar to give birth, it was discovered that she was carrying twins. 28 While she was in labor, one of the babies reached out his hand. The midwife grabbed it and tied a scarlet string around the child’s wrist, announcing, “This one came out first.” 29 But then he pulled back his hand, and out came his brother! “What!” the midwife exclaimed. “How did you break out first?” So he was named Perez.[g] 30 Then the baby with the scarlet string on his wrist was born, and he was named Zerah.[h]

Matthew 12:22-45

Jesus and the Prince of Demons

22 Then a demon-possessed man, who was blind and couldn’t speak, was brought to Jesus. He healed the man so that he could both speak and see. 23 The crowd was amazed and asked, “Could it be that Jesus is the Son of David, the Messiah?”

24 But when the Pharisees heard about the miracle, they said, “No wonder he can cast out demons. He gets his power from Satan,[a] the prince of demons.”

25 Jesus knew their thoughts and replied, “Any kingdom divided by civil war is doomed. A town or family splintered by feuding will fall apart. 26 And if Satan is casting out Satan, he is divided and fighting against himself. His own kingdom will not survive. 27 And if I am empowered by Satan, what about your own exorcists? They cast out demons, too, so they will condemn you for what you have said. 28 But if I am casting out demons by the Spirit of God, then the Kingdom of God has arrived among you. 29 For who is powerful enough to enter the house of a strong man and plunder his goods? Only someone even stronger—someone who could tie him up and then plunder his house.

30 “Anyone who isn’t with me opposes me, and anyone who isn’t working with me is actually working against me.

31 “So I tell you, every sin and blasphemy can be forgiven—except blasphemy against the Holy Spirit, which will never be forgiven. 32 Anyone who speaks against the Son of Man can be forgiven, but anyone who speaks against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven, either in this world or in the world to come.

33 “A tree is identified by its fruit. If a tree is good, its fruit will be good. If a tree is bad, its fruit will be bad. 34 You brood of snakes! How could evil men like you speak what is good and right? For whatever is in your heart determines what you say. 35 A good person produces good things from the treasury of a good heart, and an evil person produces evil things from the treasury of an evil heart. 36 And I tell you this, you must give an account on judgment day for every idle word you speak. 37 The words you say will either acquit you or condemn you.”

The Sign of Jonah

38 One day some teachers of religious law and Pharisees came to Jesus and said, “Teacher, we want you to show us a miraculous sign to prove your authority.”

39 But Jesus replied, “Only an evil, adulterous generation would demand a miraculous sign; but the only sign I will give them is the sign of the prophet Jonah. 40 For as Jonah was in the belly of the great fish for three days and three nights, so will the Son of Man be in the heart of the earth for three days and three nights.

41 “The people of Nineveh will stand up against this generation on judgment day and condemn it, for they repented of their sins at the preaching of Jonah. Now someone greater than Jonah is here—but you refuse to repent. 42 The queen of Sheba[b] will also stand up against this generation on judgment day and condemn it, for she came from a distant land to hear the wisdom of Solomon. Now someone greater than Solomon is here—but you refuse to listen.

43 “When an evil[c] spirit leaves a person, it goes into the desert, seeking rest but finding none. 44 Then it says, ‘I will return to the person I came from.’ So it returns and finds its former home empty, swept, and in order. 45 Then the spirit finds seven other spirits more evil than itself, and they all enter the person and live there. And so that person is worse off than before. That will be the experience of this evil generation.”

Psalm 16

Psalm 16

A psalm[a] of David.

Keep me safe, O God,
for I have come to you for refuge.

I said to the Lord, “You are my Master!
Every good thing I have comes from you.”
The godly people in the land
are my true heroes!
I take pleasure in them!
Troubles multiply for those who chase after other gods.
I will not take part in their sacrifices of blood
or even speak the names of their gods.

Lord, you alone are my inheritance, my cup of blessing.
You guard all that is mine.
The land you have given me is a pleasant land.
What a wonderful inheritance!

I will bless the Lord who guides me;
even at night my heart instructs me.
I know the Lord is always with me.
I will not be shaken, for he is right beside me.

No wonder my heart is glad, and I rejoice.[b]
My body rests in safety.
10 For you will not leave my soul among the dead[c]
or allow your holy one[d] to rot in the grave.
11 You will show me the way of life,
granting me the joy of your presence
and the pleasures of living with you forever.[e]

Proverbs 3:27-32

27 Do not withhold good from those who deserve it
when it’s in your power to help them.
28 If you can help your neighbor now, don’t say,
“Come back tomorrow, and then I’ll help you.”

29 Don’t plot harm against your neighbor,
for those who live nearby trust you.
30 Don’t pick a fight without reason,
when no one has done you harm.

31 Don’t envy violent people
or copy their ways.
32 Such wicked people are detestable to the Lord,
but he offers his friendship to the godly.
