Numbers 4-5

The Duties of the Kohathites

The Lord told Moses and Aaron to take a census of the descendants of Kohath among the Levites, by their clans, by their fathers’ houses, from thirty years old to fifty years old, everyone eligible for the service of performing the tasks at the Tent of Meeting.

This is the work for the descendants of Kohath at the Tent of Meeting: to take care of the most holy things. When the camp sets out, Aaron and his sons are to go into the Dwelling. They are to take down the veil that screens the ark, cover the Ark of the Testimony with it, put a covering made from the hides of sea cows[a] over it, spread a solid blue cloth over that, and insert its poles.

Over the table for the Bread of the Presence[b] they are to spread a blue cloth and put the dishes, the small bowls, the larger bowls, and the pitchers for the drink offering on it.[c] The bread that is continually there is to remain on it. Then they are to spread a scarlet cloth over these things, cover them with a covering made from the hides of sea cows, and insert its poles.

They are to take a blue cloth and cover the lampstand used for light, its lamps, its snuffers, its fire pans, and all the jars of oil used to supply it. 10 They are to put the lampstand and all its accessories under a cover made from the hides of sea cows and put it on a carrying frame.

11 Over the golden altar they are to spread a blue cloth, cover it with a covering made from the hides of sea cows, and insert its poles. 12 They are to take all the utensils which they use in the sanctuary and put them in a blue cloth, cover them with a covering made from the hides of sea cows, and put them on a carrying frame.

13 They are to remove the fat-soaked ashes from the altar and spread a purple cloth over it. 14 They are to put on it all the utensils which they use around the altar: the fire pans, the meat hooks,[d] the shovels, and the basins—the utensils of the altar. They will spread a covering made of the hides of sea cows over the altar and insert its poles.

15 After Aaron and his sons have finished covering the sanctuary and all the items of the sanctuary, when the camp sets out, the descendants of Kohath will come to carry them. But they are not to touch the sanctuary or they will die. The descendants of Kohath are to carry these things associated with the Tent of Meeting.

16 Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, shall be in charge of the lamp oil, the fragrant incense, the daily grain offering, and the anointing oil. He shall be in charge of the entire Dwelling, everything in it, the holy objects, and its furnishings.

17 The Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron, 18 “Do not allow the tribe of the Kohathite clans to be cut off from among the Levites. 19 Do this for them so that they may live and not die when they come near the most holy things: Aaron and his sons are to go in and assign to each one of them what he is to do and what he is to carry. 20 But the Kohathites must not go in to see the sanctuary even for a moment or they will die.”

The Duties of the Gershonites

21 The Lord also told Moses 22 to take a census of the descendants of Gershon, according to their fathers’ houses, by their clans, 23 and to register those from thirty years old to fifty years old, everyone eligible for the service of doing the work at the Tent of Meeting.

24 This is the work for the Gershonite clans: the work of moving the Dwelling. 25 They are to carry the curtains of the Dwelling, the Tent of Meeting, its covering, and the covering made of sea cow hides that is on top of that,[e] the screen for the entrance to the Tent of Meeting, 26 the hangings for the courtyard, the screen for the entrance through the gate into the courtyard which surrounds the Dwelling and the altar, the ropes, and all the items related to this work. They are responsible for everything that is to be done with these things. 27 All the work of the descendants of the Gershonites, everything they are to carry and all the work they are to do, is to be done at the command of Aaron and his sons. You are to assign to each of them everything they are to carry. 28 This is the work for the clans of the descendants of the Gershonites in regard to the Tent of Meeting. They are to serve under the direction of Ithamar, the son of Aaron the priest.

The Duties of the Merarites

29 As for the descendants of Merari, register them according to their clans, according to their fathers’ houses. 30 Register all of them who are between thirty years old and fifty years old, everyone eligible for service, to do the work for the Tent of Meeting. 31 This is what they are responsible for as their entire work at the Tent of Meeting: to carry the Dwelling’s boards, its crossbars, its posts, its bases, 32 the posts of the surrounding courtyard and their bases, their tent pegs, their ropes with all their equipment, and everything related to this work. You are to specify by name the items that they are responsible to carry. 33 This is the work for the clans of the descendants of Merari, regarding all their work in regard to the Tent of Meeting, under the direction of Ithamar, the son of Aaron the priest.

The Census of the Levites

34 Moses, Aaron, and the tribal chiefs of the community registered the descendants of the Kohathites according to their clans and their fathers’ houses, 35 from thirty years old to fifty years old, everyone eligible for service, for work at the Tent of Meeting. 36 The ones registered according to their clans were 2,750. 37 These were the ones registered from the clans of the Kohathites, all those who worked at the Tent of Meeting. Moses and Aaron registered them according to the Lord’s command through Moses.

38 The descendants of Gershon were registered according to their clans and according to their fathers’ houses, 39 from thirty years old to fifty years old, everyone eligible for service, for work at the Tent of Meeting. 40 The ones registered according to their clans, according to their fathers’ houses, were 2,630. 41 These were the ones registered from the clans of the descendants of Gershon, all those who worked at the Tent of Meeting. Moses and Aaron registered them according to the Lord’s command.

42 The clans of the descendants of Merari were registered according to their clans, according to their fathers’ houses, 43 from thirty years old to fifty years old, everyone eligible for service, for work at the Tent of Meeting. 44 Those registered by their clans were 3,200. 45 These were the ones registered from the clans of the descendants of Merari. Moses and Aaron registered them according to the Lord’s command through Moses.

46 Every one of the Levites was registered. Moses and Aaron and the tribal chiefs of Israel registered them according to their clans and their fathers’ houses, 47 from thirty years old to fifty years old, everyone who was eligible to perform the work of serving at or carrying the Tent of Meeting. 48 Those registered totaled 8,580. 49 According to the Lord’s command, they were registered by Moses, along with what each man was assigned to do and to carry. They were registered just as the Lord commanded Moses.

Separation From the Unclean

The Lord spoke to Moses: “Command the Israelites to send outside of the camp everyone who has an impure skin disease,[f] everyone who has a bodily discharge, and everyone who is unclean because of contact with a dead body. You must send them away, male or female. You must send them outside of the camp so that they will not defile their camps, where I dwell in their midst.”

The Israelites did exactly that and sent them outside of the camp. The Israelites did just as the Lord said to Moses.

Compensation for Wrongdoing

The Lord spoke to Moses and told him to tell the Israelites this:

Whenever a man or a woman commits any wrong against another person and so in this way is unfaithful to the Lord, that person must be held responsible. Such people are to confess the wrong which they have done. They are to make full restitution for their guilt, then add one fifth of its value on top of that and give it to the person they have wronged. But if the wronged person has no next-of-kin to receive the restitution, the restitution goes to the Lord for the priest, in addition to the atonement ram, with which the priest will make atonement for him. Every elevated offering that the Israelites present to the priest will belong to the priest. 10 Anyone’s holy things[g] are his own, but whatever anyone gives to the priest is the priest’s.

A Test for Adultery

11 The Lord told Moses to speak to the Israelites and tell them this:

12 If any man’s wife goes astray and is unfaithful to him, 13 and another man lies down with[h] her, but this remains hidden from her husband and she is not found out, she has defiled herself even though there is no witness against her and she was not caught in the act.

14 If a feeling of jealousy comes over her husband and he becomes jealous of his wife who has defiled herself, or if a feeling of jealousy comes over him and he is jealous of his wife, even though she has not defiled herself, 15 then the man is to bring his wife to the priest. He is also to bring an offering on her behalf: two quarts[i] of barley flour. He is not to pour oil on it or put frankincense on it, because it is a grain offering for jealousy, a grain offering for remembrance, to reveal guilt.

16 The priest is to bring her near and present her before the Lord. 17 The priest is to take holy water in a clay vessel, take some of the dust that is on the floor of the Dwelling, and put it into the water. 18 The priest is to present the woman before the Lord, let down the woman’s hair, and put into her hands the grain offering for remembrance, which is the grain offering for jealousy. The priest is to have in his hands the bitter water that brings a curse. 19 The priest will make her take an oath, and he will tell the woman, “If no man has slept with you, and if you have not gone astray by becoming defiled while married to your husband, may this bitter water that brings a curse not affect you. 20 But if you have gone astray while married to your husband, and if you are defiled and another man besides your husband has had sex with you—” 21 Then the priest will make the woman take an oath with a curse, and the priest will tell the woman, “May the Lord make you an object of cursing and swearing among your people when the Lord allows your thigh to shrivel and your belly to swell. 22 May this water that brings a curse go inside you and make your belly swell and your thigh shrivel.” The woman will say, “Amen, Amen.”

23 The priest is to write these curses on a scroll and wipe them off into the bitter water. 24 He will make the woman drink the bitter water that brings a curse. The water that brings a curse will enter into her and become bitter. 25 The priest will take the grain offering for jealousy out of the woman’s hand, wave the grain offering before the Lord, and bring it to the altar. 26 The priest will take a handful of the grain offering as its memorial portion and burn it on the altar. Afterward he will make the woman drink the water.

27 When he has made her drink the water, if she has defiled herself and has been unfaithful to her husband, the water that brings a curse will enter into her and become bitter. Her belly will swell, and her thigh will shrivel. The woman will be an object of cursing among her people. 28 If the woman has not defiled herself but is clean, then she will be unaffected and will be able to conceive children.

29 This is the law regarding jealousy when a wife, while married to her husband, goes astray and defiles herself, 30 or when a feeling of jealousy comes over a husband and he is jealous of his wife. Then the man will present the woman before the Lord, and the priest will apply this entire procedure to her. 31 The man will be free from guilt, but that woman will bear her guilt.

Footnotes:

  1. Numbers 4:6 Sea cows are similar to the manatees of Florida. The local name of the Red Sea variety is dugong. Alternate translations are dolphin skin, badger skin, goatskin, and fine leather.
  2. Numbers 4:7 Traditionally showbread
  3. Numbers 4:7 The precise identification of the four types of vessels or utensils is uncertain. See Exodus 25:29.
  4. Numbers 4:14 Or forks
  5. Numbers 4:25 It appears that this verse is enumerating the four layers of the Dwelling: the dwelling made of linen, the tent made of goat hair, the covering of rams’ skins dyed red, and the outer covering made of hides of sea cows.
  6. Numbers 5:2 Traditionally leprosy. However, the term is wider than this specific disease. The term includes various sorts of skin diseases.
  7. Numbers 5:10 Or dedicated things
  8. Numbers 5:13 As a term for sexual intercourse, lie down with usually refers to illicit sexual relations initiated by a man. The same word is used in verses 19 and 20 where it is translated more freely.
  9. Numbers 5:15 One tenth (of an ephah). The text lists no unit of measurement. It is assumed it is an ephah.

Mark 12:18-37

The God of the Living

18 Next some Sadducees (who say that there will be no resurrection) came to him. They asked him a question: 19 “Teacher, Moses wrote for us: ‘If a man’s brother dies and leaves behind a wife but no child, then his brother should take his wife and raise up children for his brother.’[a]

20 “Now there were seven brothers. The first one took a wife and died without leaving children. 21 The second one married her and died, leaving no children. The third one did the same. 22 The seven left no children. Last of all, the woman also died. 23 So when they rise in the resurrection, whose wife will she be, since all seven had her as a wife?”

24 Jesus said to them, “Isn’t this the reason you are mistaken: that you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God? 25 In fact, when people rise from the dead, they do not marry, and they are not given in marriage, but they are like angels in heaven. 26 But about the dead—that they are raised—have you not read in the book of Moses, in the passage about the burning bush, how God told him, ‘I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’?[b] 27 He is not the God of the dead, but of the living. You are badly mistaken.”

Love God and Your Neighbor

28 One of the experts in the law approached after he heard their discussion. When he saw that Jesus had answered them well, he asked Jesus, “Which commandment is the greatest of all?”

29 Jesus answered, “The most important is: ‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord, our God, the Lord is one. 30 You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.’[c] 31 The second is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’[d] There is no other commandment greater than these.”

32 The expert in the law said to him, “Well said, teacher. You have spoken correctly on the basis of the truth that he is one, and there is no other besides him.[e] 33 To love him with all your heart, with all your understanding, and with all your strength, and to love your neighbor as yourself, is more important than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices.”[f]

34 When Jesus saw that he had answered wisely, he said to him, “You are not far from the kingdom of God.” After that, no one dared to ask him any more questions.

David’s Son and David’s Lord

35 While Jesus was teaching in the temple courts, he responded by saying, “How is it that the experts in the law say that the Christ is the Son of David? 36 David himself said by the Holy Spirit:

The Lord said to my Lord, ‘Sit at my right hand,
until I make your enemies a footstool under your feet.’[g]

37 “David himself calls him Lord, so how can he be his son?” The large crowd listened to him with delight.

Psalm 48

Psalm 48

The Security of the King’s Holy City

Heading
A song. A psalm by the Sons of Korah.

Call to Praise

The Lord is great. He deserves to be praised
in the city of our God, on his holy mountain.
His mountain is lofty and beautiful, the joy of the whole earth.
Mount Zion, the northern mountain, is the city of the Great King.
God is in her citadels.
He is famous as her fortress.

Defeat of the Enemies

Look! See! The kings came together.
They advanced together.
They saw. Yes, they were amazed.
They were terrified. They were put to flight.
Trembling seized them there,
pain like a woman giving birth.
You shattered them with an east wind, like ships of Tarshish.

Thanksgiving

What we have heard, we now have also seen:
In the city of the Lord of Armies,
in the city of our God, Interlude
God establishes her forever.
Inside your temple, O God, we meditate on your mercy.
10 Your praise, O God, reaches to the ends of the earth,
just as your fame does.
Righteousness fills your right hand.
11 Mount Zion rejoices.
The daughters of Judah[a] celebrate because of your judgments.
12 Go around Zion. Yes, go all the way around her.
Count her towers. 13 Consider her rampart.[b]
View her citadels, so that you may tell the next generation about them.
14 For this God is our God forever and ever.
He will guide us beyond death.[c]

Numbers 2:1-3:51, Mark 11:27-12:17, Psalms 47:1-9, Proverbs 10:24-25

Today is the 4th day of March welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I am Brian it’s great to be here with you today. It’s really great to be here with you today. Today is my birthday and as I have said for the last many many years we come to this day, and I count the years of the Daily Audio Bible. And, so, this is my 17th birthday which I can hardly believe, but it’s true. Birthday number 17 doing the Daily Audio Bible, which means I’ve been born and grown up and can drive a car and…and now I’m a teenager who knows everything. But actually that’s worked in reverse. Now that I have the second chance at being 17, I realize that I don’t know much of anything but I’m trying really really hard. And I suppose that’s what we…we learn in life. Nevertheless, it’s great to be here with you on this 17th birthday taking the next step forward together around the Global Campfire. And we just began the book of Numbers yesterday. We will continue that journey going forward now. Numbers chapters 2 and 3 today.

Commentary:

Okay. So, as we continue the gospel of Mark it should be reasonably simple to see why the synoptic Gospels are called the synoptic Gospels because they share so much of the same source material and the same stories. And, so, the stories that we were reading today are stories that we also encountered in the Gospel of Matthew. And Jesus is back in Jerusalem. We are very very close to the time of…of His crucifixion, the passion narrative again. And the chief priests, the religious elite, those with the education, those in the know, those in control of the people are asking Jesus where He is…where He has gotten His authority to do the kinds of things that He is doing. And He asked them His own question. Like, He answers the question with a question. And the question is revealing. It’s about John. So, John according to the New Testament was heralded and was sent by God to prepare the way for Jesus, who is coming after him. So, John was sent, was from God and many many many many many of the people saw that, saw John as an actual profit. And that’s not a small thing. So, the religious leaders who are asking Jesus about His authority, they know there hasn’t been a prophet in Israel for centuries. And, so, we could understand a little bit of skepticism on their part. It had been 400 years until John came as a prophet. But John captured the hearts of the people and turned those hearts toward God and the people recognized Him as a prophet. But the religious leaders not so much. So, when Jesus asks the question, tell me what you think about John that is going to be very revealing. If they were to say John was from God he is a prophet, we’re just like kinda getting on board with that, we’re starting to understand what was going on there. Well then they could see God working in this plan and Jesus could speak to them however He chose too but since they answered they didn’t know, which was a kind of the only answer that they could give based upon their reasoning. If we say he’s from God, then He…then Jesus will ask us why we didn’t trust in him. And if say he was from man then the people then they’ll be afraid of the people. So, they’re kind of in this no-win situation. But it reveals what they are really trying to do which is to question and entrap Jesus. And, so, Jesus says I’m not gonna answer your question then. And He moves on and tells a parable. The parable is about a man who planted a vineyard and went away, right? And then sent at harvest time servants to collect his share for offering the property to grow the produce. That entire parable is a synopsis of the gospel. So, if we understand that the man planted a vineyard and put a fence around it is God and that the tenant farmers are the religious leaders, then we understand that Jesus is telling in advance the gospel narrative, the story of the gospel. And, so, let’s kind of end our time by thinking about this parable. It’s really short, just a few sentences. And, so, let me read it again. “A man”, which is God in this parable, “a man planted a vineyard, put a fence around it, dug a pit for the winepress and build a watchtower. Then he rented it out to some tenant farmers went on a journey. When it was time, he sent his servant to the tenants to receive his share of the vineyards produce. They took him, beat him, and send him away empty-handed.” And we can think, yeah that’s Jesus but it’s not. These are the prophetic voices that God had been sending all along to warn and correct, to reorient the people, especially the leaders to the heart of God. “The first one, they beat him and sent him away empty-handed. And again he sent another servant to them”, which would be another prophet, “but they hit him on the head and treated him shamefully. Then he sent another servant”, right? Another prophet, “but they killed that one. He also sent many others. Some they beat and others they killed. He still had one left, a dearly loved son.” And this is where Jesus is in the parable. Finally He sent Him, which is the dearly loved son to them, which is the religious leaders saying, “they will respect my son. But those tenant farmers said to one another this is the heir. Come, let’s kill him and the inheritance will be ours. They seized him, killed him, and threw him out of the vineyard.” So, through story, through parable Jesus reveals the status of what is going on in the time that He is doing ministry. And He concludes saying, “so what will the owner of the vineyard do? He will come and kill those tenant farmers and give the vineyard to others.” And we are supposed to be those others. And in response they decide to kill Jesus. They plot to kill Jesus, which once again shows us just how backward things had gotten, which shows us how backward things are. And, so, there’s plenty for us to contemplate, not the least of which is who would we be in this story?

Prayer:

Holy Spirit come into that. We thank You. We thank You for the gospels. We thank You for this picture of…of perfection. We thank You for a glimpse at what it could look like to be in this broken fallen world, but to be true. And, so, as we contemplate what we’ve read today we invite Your Holy Spirit to come and plant…plant what we’ve read into our hearts. But part of planting is to prepare the soil. And, so, some that requires digging and some of that requires pulling up rocks and getting rid of weeds so that the soil may be fertile. And that is what we want our hearts to be like, and so that may require some digging and some uprooting. Show us what that looks like for us. We ask in the name of Jesus. Amen.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Hello, DAB my name is Sarah and I’m just calling in to ask for your prayers for my daily struggle with addiction. It’s something that I struggle with daily, and I seem to be failing at it most days. I need help and your prayer to be able to get through this and to stop hurting those around me because of my addictions. Thank you. Thank you for your prayers.

Good morning DAB family this is the Farmer’s Wife calling in from a chili 12 degrees up here in upstate New York. I just wanted to give an update. I am now 13 weeks, and I heard the baby’s heartbeat for the first time on Friday and I was just in awe. And I just couldn’t wait to tell you guys Because you are my family and just to hear it…it was beautiful. It was just so beautiful. And I wanted to ask for prayer for the physician who is caring for me during this pregnancy and who will be delivering this child, Doctor John from Jordan New York. He’s the one who introduced me to this family, and I am forever grateful. And I just think it’s so amazing how the Lord put him in my past so many years ago to help me come to a healing place and then to be able to see my husband…the Farmer and I bring in new life to this world and just completely covered in prayer. It's…it’s just beautiful. It’s hard. There are definitely hard days when I’m milking cows and I’m like OK. But, you know, I’m just so grateful for all of you and I will keep you posted. So, the little munchkin and I are doing well, and the Farmer is getting excited. So, love you all.

Hey, this one goes out to Sean from London. This is Micah in Awe here in Kansas City MO. So, I had like a like a pretty…I did a lot of drugs and alcohol when I was younger, and it followed me up until I was 25. And, so, here’s what happened to me. I was just floating along doing whatever I wanted to do, whatever felt good and then I started feeling bad for what I was doing. Out of nowhere all of a sudden, they started feeling like what I was doing was wrong and was like sin. And I had a little bit of background in the church. Like my mom brought me into church as a young man. And as a teen she would take me and my friends to church promising to bring us out to eat after. So, I knew…I had some head knowledge of what was going on but I didn’t have any kind of heart knowledge and never took the time to really try to believe or care to believe. I was just, you know, doing what young guys do, just running around chasing whatever felt good. So anyway, I don’t know that I could have came out of alcohol and drugs and that lifestyle without first having the conscience…conscience issue, like where God made me feel bad like I was doing sin for what I was doing. Maybe that’s not the best way to put it. But like, I didn’t know I was sinning or I didn't…I didn’t care to know that I was sinning for a long time and then once I started seeing the consequences saw my sin and then guilt started…like Satan got in there. There was fear and guilt developing in me and growing rapidly. And I really felt like I was on death’s doorstep. And then that’s whenever I started having these feelings. So, I started running away from what I was doing. Whenever I would have a temptation sometimes, I would literally run or just…

Hi, DABbers it’s February 28th there were two calls today that I really would like to pay…pray about. The first…sorry…the first one was Sean from London who listens to DAB every day and prays for all of us and he has a problem with alcohol. Sean, I am joining many other DABbers to pray that somehow you will have the strength to not take that first drink. Try to do it one day at a time, one day at a time. When you…when evening comes find something to do and tell the evil one to get away from you, you don’t want to drink. Try it one day at a time Sean. We’re behind you. We love you. You are worthy. And then Selena praying for not only her home country Ukraine but for Russia. Spot on. The people are not the problem. It’s the evil one. And I join you in praying that God’s will be done in both countries because God is in charge. He has a plan. We need to trust Him and just keep praying for those precious people. God bless you all in Jesus’ name.

Good morning family it’s Soaring on Eagles wings from Canada. Sean from the UK I am so pleased that you called in, shared the temptations you’re undergoing, and your inability to resist them. Yet you have the knowledge of God’s word because you quoted them. So, in order to resist the enemy, you have to stand firm in God’s word and be ready to defeat it when it comes knocking at your door. I want to read a scripture for you today. It’s in Joshua 1:8 verse 8 9b. Do not let this word of the Lord depart from your mouth. Meditate on it day and night so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful. Do not be discouraged for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go. Abba Father, I bring Sean to you. You see the struggles he’s having. And I pray Lord that You would just guide him, help him to be an overcomer. Today I want to speak the name of Jesus over Sean. Break the addiction that is within him and declaring that he has hope and freedom in Jesus. God’s name it’s powerful, its healing, its life. So, Lord I ask that You would break the strongholds over Sean’s life, that he will be free to serve You in truth and righteousness. Bless him today and remind him that You’re always with him. Sean, I love you and I’m praying for you.

Numbers 2-3

The Arrangement of the Camp

The Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron as follows:

Each of the Israelites will camp under his own standard, with the banners for their fathers’ houses. They will camp around the Tent of Meeting at a distance from it.

Those who camp on the east side toward the sunrise will be organized under the standard of Judah’s camp, according to their military units.

The tribal chief of Judah’s descendants is Nahshon son of Amminadab. His unit, as registered, totals 74,600.

The tribe of Issachar will camp next to Judah. The tribal chief of Issachar’s descendants is Nethanel son of Zuar. His unit, as registered, totals 54,400.

The tribe of Zebulun will be next. The tribal chief of Zebulun’s descendants is Eliab son of Helon. His unit, as registered, totals 57,400.

All those registered in Judah’s camp are 186,400, according to their military units. They will set out first.

10 Those who camp on the south side will be organized under the standard of Reuben’s camp, according to their military units.

The tribal chief of Reuben’s descendants is Elizur son of Shedeur. 11 His unit, as registered, totals 46,500.

12 The tribe of Simeon will camp next to Reuben. The tribal chief of Simeon’s descendants is Shelumiel son of Zurishaddai. 13 His unit, as registered, totals 59,300.

14 The tribe of Gad will be next. The tribal chief of Gad’s descendants will be Eliasaph son of Deuel.[a] 15 His unit, as registered, totals 45,650.

16 All those registered in Reuben’s camp are 151,450, according to their military units. They will set out second.

17 Then the Tent of Meeting will set out with the Levites’ camp, which is in the middle of the camps. They are to set out in the same order as they camp, each one in his place, following their standards.

18 Those who camp on the west side will be organized under the standard of Ephraim’s camp, according to their military units.

The tribal chief of Ephraim’s descendants is Elishama son of Ammihud. 19 His unit, as registered, totals 40,500.

20 Next to Ephraim will be the tribe of Manasseh. The tribal chief of Manasseh’s descendants is Gamaliel son of Pedahzur. 21 His unit, as registered, totals 32,200.

22 The tribe of Benjamin will be next. The tribal chief of Benjamin’s descendants is Abidan son of Gideoni. 23 His unit, as registered, totals 35,400.

24 All those registered in Ephraim’s camp are 108,100, according to their military units. They will set out third.

25 Those who camp on the north side will be organized under the standard of Dan’s camp, according to their military units.

The tribal chief of Dan’s descendants is Ahiezer son of Ammishaddai. 26 His unit, as registered, totals 62,700.

27 Next to Dan will be the tribe of Asher. The tribal chief of Asher’s descendants will be Pagiel son of Ochran. 28 His unit, as registered, totals 41,500.

29 The tribe of Naphtali will be next. The tribal chief of Naphtali’s descendants is Ahira son of Enan. 30 His unit, as registered, totals 53,400.

31 All those registered in Dan’s camp are 157,600. They will set out last, following their standards.

32 These were the Israelites who were registered according to their fathers’ houses. All the men in the camps, organized according to their military units, as registered, totaled 603,550. 33 But the Levites were not registered among the Israelites, just as the Lord had commanded Moses.

34 The Israelites did everything that the Lord commanded Moses. They camped around their standards, and they set out, every one of them by their clans, according to their fathers’ houses.

Aaron’s Sons and the Duties of the Levites

This is the family history of Aaron and Moses at the time when the Lord spoke with Moses on Mount Sinai.

These are the names of Aaron’s sons: Nadab the firstborn, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar. These are the names of Aaron’s sons, the anointed priests, whom he ordained to serve as priests.

Nadab and Abihu died in the presence of the Lord when they offered unauthorized fire before the Lord in the Wilderness of Sinai, and they had no sons. So Eleazar and Ithamar served as priests in the presence of Aaron their father.

The Lord spoke to Moses: “Bring the tribe of Levi near and have them stand before Aaron the priest so that they may assist him. They will perform the duties for him and for the entire congregation in front of the Tent of Meeting by doing the work for the Dwelling. They will take care of all the furnishings for the Tent of Meeting and perform the duties of the Israelites by doing the work for the Dwelling. You will give the Levites to Aaron and to his sons. They are completely given to him from among the Israelites. 10 But you will appoint Aaron and his sons, and they will serve in the priesthood. Any unauthorized person who goes near must be put to death.”

The Census of the Levites

11 The Lord spoke to Moses, 12 “See, I have taken the Levites from among the Israelites instead of every firstborn that opens the womb among the Israelites. The Levites are mine, 13 for all the firstborn are mine. On the day that I struck down all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, I set apart for myself every firstborn in Israel, both human and animal. They are mine. I am the Lord.”

14 The Lord spoke to Moses in the Wilderness of Sinai, 15 “Register the Levites according to their fathers’ houses, by their clans. You are to register every male a month old and up.”

16 So Moses registered them as he was commanded by the word of the Lord.

17 These were the names of the sons of Levi: Gershon, Kohath, and Merari.

18 These were the names of the sons of Gershon according to their clans: Libni and Shimei.
19 The sons of Kohath according to their clans were Amram, Izhar, Hebron, and Uzziel.
20 The sons of Merari according to their clans were Mahli and Mushi.

The following were the clans of the Levites according to their fathers’ houses.

21 From Gershon came the Libnite clan and the Shimeite clan. These were the Gershonite clans. 22 Those who were registered, counting all the males who were a month old and up, were 7,500. 23 The Gershonite clans camped behind the Dwelling on the west side. 24 The tribal chief of the father’s house for the Gershonites was Eliasaph son of Lael. 25 The duties of the descendants of Gershon in the Tent of Meeting involved the dwelling and the tent,[b] its coverings, and the screen for the entrance to the Tent of Meeting, 26 also the hangings of the courtyard, and the screen for the entrance to the courtyard which surrounds the Dwelling and the altar, and its ropes—everything related to this work.

27 From Kohath came the Amramite clan, the Izharite clan, the Hebronite clan, and the Uzzielite clan. These were the Kohathite clans. 28 Counting all the males who were a month old and up, there were 8,600 to perform the duties of the sanctuary. 29 The clans of the descendants of Kohath camped on the south side of the Dwelling. 30 The tribal chief of the father’s house for the Kohathite clans was Elizaphan son of Uzziel. 31 Their duties involved the ark, the table, the lampstand, the altars, the sanctuary utensils with which they serve, and the screen—everything related to this work. 32 The tribal chief over the Levite tribal chiefs was Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest. He was in charge of those performing the duties of the sanctuary.

33 From Merari came the Mahlite clan and the Mushite clan. These were the Merarite clans. 34 Those who were registered, counting all the males who were a month old and up, were 6,200. 35 The tribal chief of the father’s house for the Merarite clans was Zuriel son of Abihail. They camped on the north side of the Dwelling. 36 The appointed duties for the sons of Merari involved the Dwelling’s boards, its crossbars, its posts, its bases, all its equipment—everything related to this work, 37 also the posts for the surrounding courtyard, their bases, their tent pegs, and their ropes.

38 Those who camped in front of the Dwelling on the east side, in front of the Tent of Meeting, toward the sunrise, were Moses and Aaron and Aaron’s sons, who were performing the duties of the sanctuary on behalf of the Israelites. Any unauthorized person who goes near shall be put to death. 39 All of the Levities who were registered when the Lord commanded Moses and Aaron to register them according to their clans, every male a month old and up, were 22,000.

Redemption of the Firstborn

40 The Lord said to Moses, “Register all the firstborn males of the Israelites one month old and up, and make a list of their names. 41 You are to take the Levites for me—I am the Lord—instead of every firstborn among the Israelites, and take the livestock of the Levites instead of every firstborn among the livestock of the Israelites.” 42 So Moses registered all the firstborn among the Israelites as the Lord commanded. 43 All the firstborn males listed by name, one month old and up, when registered, totaled 22,273.

44 The Lord spoke to Moses: 45 “Take the Levites instead of every firstborn among the Israelites, and the livestock of the Levites instead of their livestock. The Levites will be mine. I am the Lord. 46 For the redemption of the 273 firstborn Israelites who outnumber the Levites, 47 you are to collect five shekels apiece for each one, according to the sanctuary shekel (this shekel is twenty gerahs[c]). 48 You are to give the money, the redemption price for the additional Israelites, to Aaron and his sons.”

49 Moses collected the redemption money from those who outnumbered the ones redeemed by the Levites who took their place. 50 He collected the money from the firstborn of the Israelites, 1,365 shekels, according to the sanctuary shekel. 51 Moses gave the redemption money to Aaron and to his sons, in obedience to the word of the Lord, just as the Lord commanded Moses.

Footnotes:

  1. Numbers 2:14 Some Hebrew manuscripts read Reuel.
  2. Numbers 3:25 The term dwelling here refers to the innermost covering of the Dwelling. The tent is the layer above the dwelling.
  3. Numbers 3:47 The exact value of most ancient weights and measures is uncertain, and there was no universal standard. The sanctuary had its own set of official weights. A shekel is about 10 to 12 grams or .4 to .5 of an ounce, with the sanctuary shekel being slightly larger than the common shekel. There is no independent evidence for the weight of a gerah.

Mark 11:27-12:17

Jesus’ Authority Is Questioned

27 They went into Jerusalem again. As he was walking in the temple courts, the chief priests, the experts in the law, and the elders came to him. 28 They asked him, “By what authority are you doing these things? Or who gave you this authority to do these things?”

29 Jesus replied, “I will ask you one question. Answer me, and I will tell you by what authority I am doing these things. 30 The baptism of John—was it from heaven or from men? Answer me.”

31 They discussed this with one another, saying, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will say, ‘Then why did you not believe him?’ 32 But if we say, ‘From men’. . . .” (They feared the crowd, because everybody held that John really was a prophet.) 33 So they answered Jesus, “We don’t know.”

Jesus said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things.”

The Parable of the Wicked Tenants

12 Jesus began to speak to them in parables. “A man planted a vineyard, put a fence around it, dug a pit for the winepress, and built a watchtower. Then he rented it out to some tenant farmers and went on a journey. When it was time, he sent a servant to the tenants to receive his share of the vineyard’s produce. They took him, beat him, and sent him away empty-handed. Again, he sent another servant to them. But they hit him on the head and treated him shamefully. Then he sent another servant, but they killed that one. He also sent many others; some they beat, and others they killed. He still had one left, a dearly loved son. Finally, he sent him to them, saying, ‘They will respect my son.’ But those tenant farmers said to one another, ‘This is the heir. Come on, let’s kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.’ They seized him, killed him, and threw him out of the vineyard. So what will the owner of the vineyard do? He will come and kill those tenant farmers and give the vineyard to others. 10 Have you not read this Scripture:

The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone.
11 The Lord has done this, and it is marvelous in our eyes?”[a]

12 They were looking for a way to arrest him, because they knew that he had spoken the parable against them. But they feared the crowd, so they left him and went away.

Paying Taxes to Caesar

13 The Jewish leaders sent some Pharisees and some Herodians to Jesus to try to trap him in what he said. 14 They came and said to him, “Teacher, we know that you are honest and do not play favorites, since you are not partial to anyone,[b] but you teach the way of God on the basis of the truth. Is it lawful to pay a tax to Caesar or not? 15 Should we pay it or not?”

Since Jesus knew their hypocrisy, he said to them, “Why do you keep testing me? Bring me a denarius so that I can look at it.”

16 So they brought one.

He said to them, “Whose image and inscription is this?”

“Caesar’s,” they answered him.

17 Then Jesus told them, “Give to Caesar what is Caesar’s, and to God what is God’s.”

And they were amazed at him.

Psalm 47

The King’s Empire

Heading
For the choir director. By the Sons of Korah. A psalm.

Praise the Great King of All the Earth!

All you peoples, clap your hands!
Shout to God! Sing a loud song!

Yes, the Lord Most High is awesome.
He is the great King over all the earth!
He subdues peoples under us
and nations under our feet.
He chooses our inheritance for us.
It is the pride of Jacob, whom he loves. Interlude
God has ascended with a joyful shout.
The Lord goes up with the sound of the ram’s horn.

Make music for God! Make music!
Make music for our King! Make music!
For God is the King of all the earth.
Make music for him with a wise song.

God reigns as king over the nations.
God is seated on his holy throne.
The nobles of the peoples come together
as the people of the God of Abraham.
Yes, the shields of the earth[a] belong to God.
He is greatly exalted.

Contrasts Between the Righteous and the Wicked

24 What the wicked person dreads will come upon him,
but the Lord will grant what the righteous desire.
25 When the storm has passed, the wicked person is no more,
but the righteous person has an everlasting foundation.

Leviticus 27:14- Numbers 1:54, Mark 11:1-26, Psalms 46:1-11, Proverbs 10:23

Today is the 3rd day of March welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I am Brian it is great to be here with you today as we continue the journey and gather around the Global Campfire and find our place and exhale and relax and allow the Scriptures to speak to us. It’s a little bit of a special day today. We’re going to finish a book. We’re going to finish the book of Leviticus and the giving of the law and one of the books that lots of people think lasts forever and ever. But we have navigated, and we will be coming to the conclusion of the book of Leviticus today and then entering the book of Numbers. And then when we get there to the book of Numbers, we’ll talk a little bit about what we’re going to read as we navigate Numbers. And, so, let’s dive in. We’ll pick up where we left off yesterday. Leviticus chapter 27 verse 14 through the end of the book and then we’ll begin Numbers and read chapter 1 verses 1 through 54 today.

Introduction to the book of Numbers:

Okay, so that’s the conclusion to the book of Leviticus which brings us to the opening of the book of Numbers. And as we enter into Numbers, we’re gonna…it’s gonna feel a little a little like déjà vu, like haven’t we covered some of this before? And the truth is, yes, some of this we have covered before, but we are in a transition now. We’re beginning…like the second generation is beginning to grow up and it is now time to go to the promised land. And, so, there is some review about the expectations because now the law isn’t being given. Now they have this. Now it’s not a concept or a book. It’s something that they have to live. And they need to begin to live it now as they head toward the promised land so that they can enter into the promised land and establish all of this in the land of promise. And God continues to remind them as He does through the entire Torah that He is holy, and He expects His people to be holy. And, so, as we enter into this, like the first nine chapters are going to be some review and some structure being put into place. Like I said, it’s time to move into the promised land. So, we’ll see censuses being taken, laws being given, review of laws, we’ll…we’ll see the purification celebrations happening. And then it’s time and we’ll see some spies sent into the promised land, this mythic land that we’ve been moving toward for centuries. So, we got to go into the promised land with Abraham. We saw the land get promised. We were in that land with Isaac and Jacob. But we ended up in Egypt for four centuries. And since the children of Israel have been delivered from slavery in Egypt they’ve been in the wilderness. So, we haven’t been back into that land since Jacob. And, so, spies are sent into the land to scope it out, find out what’s going on. What’s there? What does it look like? Who’s there? Do they have walls in their cities? What are the people like? The things…reconnaissance, basically. What’s going on here? And what are we moving into? And, so, they await the spies return so that they can prepare and the spies come back with messages and some very crucial critical decisions have to be made and they carry great weight in the story. But we’ll get there soon enough. And, so, let’s begin. Numbers chapter 1.

Commentary:

Okay. So, we’ve already talked about the book of Numbers and moved into that new territory. Just one thing to point out from the Gospel of Mark today because we passed our relatively famous passage of Scripture, right? “Whoever says to this mountain, be lifted up and thrown into the sea and does not doubt in his heart but believes that what he says will happen, it will be done for him. Therefore, I tell you everything that you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it and it will be yours.” And that is typically where the quotation and the point ends except for in the Bible. The Bible actually goes on to finish the paragraph and it’s really really important to entering into what Jesus is saying. And, so, I want to…even though I just read it really fast…I want us to absorb the full passage what Jesus actually said. And I quote, “have faith in God. Amen I tell you, whoever says to this mountain, be lifted up and thrown into the sea and does not doubt in his heart but believes that what he says will happen, it will be done for him. Therefore, I tell you everything that you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it and it will be yours. Whenever you stand praying, if you have anything against anyone, forgive him, so that your Father in heaven may forgive your sins. But if you do not forgive your Father in heaven will not forgive your sins.” We have encountered these kinds of statements before. There’s a reason we encounter these concepts many times. It’s because they’re very very important to how this faith journey works, life with God works. And, so, we have talked about forgiveness before. Where we found it in the Gospel of Matthew was the very next thing Jesus said after the Lord’s prayer. Here we find it in the Gospel of Mark. Forgiveness is not optional. It may take time. It may be a process but it’s not optional in God’s kingdom because when we harbor unforgiveness then we do have something between us and someone else. Freedom is that we don’t have that. We don’t have anything between us anyone else. If we can even imagine what that would be like, but it would be freedom. That begins in us not in the one that we think has offended us. It begins in us with an act of forgiveness. And we’ve already talked about this before. That doesn’t mean we deny or suppress what we think happened or what did happen or that we ignore it or that we just say it didn’t matter it did. Forgiveness isn’t about that. It’s about our freedom. It’s about us unchaining ourselves from that offense and releasing it to God. God will judge this. God will take care of this. We untangle ourselves so we don’t have anything between us and that person anymore, which doesn’t mean that we have dinner every night or that we meet once a month and try to talk through things. Maybe it does. Maybe it doesn’t. What it means is there’s nothing chaining us to that person anymore. We have released it to God, and we have hidden ourselves in Christ releasing these things and allowing the Holy Spirit to mend and comfort and heal us. That activates things like Jesus is talking about, that whatever we ask, believing that we have received it, it will be ours. Maybe the first place to start believing that we have received it and it will be ours would be forgiveness, believing that we can do this, believing that we can release this incident, this event, this person to God, just believing that it’s possible is the first step toward achieving the impossible. And, so, let’s give that some thought today.

Prayer:

Jesus, we love You. We thank You for this. This is one of the hardest things for us. We have memories. We can look back into the past and we can hold onto things that have happened back there and carry them forward into the present and into the future. And it’s hard for us not to do that. But You are inviting us to be free from all of the energy that that takes to maintain. And, so, the first step is to believe that it’s possible. And we believe that it’s possible. And, so, come Holy Spirit into these broken places in us that are attached to events or people and lovingly and carefully as we trust in You like a little child would, untether us from these things so we open ourselves to release them to You, we pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Greetings Daily Audio Bible family I’m calling as Patrick from Malta. I’m here with Maria my wife and we’re praying today for the tragic events in Ukraine. It’s the 27th of February and I don’t know what it would have progressed you by now, but it seems like it could escalate very badly. I know Jesus said they'll…they’ll be wars and rumors of wars and these things must happen but don’t let your heart be troubled. But just seeing the suffering and it just seems so unnecessary. And to see this man just lead so many people into suffering and bring like a dark cloud upon the nations and possibly the world upon Europe. And I’m just praying Lord that You would be set upon this, that You would be in control, and that You would have Your way, that Your will be done. We…we don’t want to see any suffering. I experienced a revolution 36 years ago in the Philippines where it was a peaceful resolution revolution. There was no bloodshed and the military actually turned around and joined the people. And that’s my prayer, that the military, that their conscience would be…would be pricked, that the soldiers themselves the generals, the army. I’m sure there are so many people in Russia that do not want this war and yet maybe are pressured by fear. We just pray that there would be a turnaround in their hearts, and we pray for peace and Jesus’ name. Amen.

Good morning Daily Audio Bible family this is Egbert from California by the way of Belize, city of Belize. I haven’t called in for quite a while. Just enjoying a mountain top experience with the Lord working in and through my life. And at this point I’ve held onto the name Giant Slayer for a while just thinking about David and his experience with Goliath. And right now, I need the prayers of the Saints to pray for me to strengthen me to continue this pilgrim journey that we’re all on. And I covet your prayers. I pray for you every day and I’m just thankful that we have this community. A shout out to the Hardin family, Biola, Blind Tony, Delta Alpha Foxtrot and all the other members from earlier on. I covet the prayers of everyone. I thank God for the new members as the community continues to expand globally as we are continually preparing ourselves daily for the return of our Lord and savior Jesus Christ that made the ultimate sacrifice for us. So, please pray for me that God would strengthen me. We all fall but we get up. And as we continue this journey and this battle, we know that we have the victory in Jesus Christ. Whatever the enemy comes to us with we know that God will make a way where there seems to be no way. God bless and make it a great day. Love you all. Amen.

This is from treasure to treasure, and I ask my DAB community to please go to the Lord and plead my case before Him and ask the heavenly Father to come with vengeance against the enemy for all that he has stolen from me and asked the Lord to allow me to have a blessing in place of my sorrow and anguish. Thank you for lifting me to the throne of Christ.

Hi DAB family this is Tom from Australia, and my call is for Jackie from Canada who doubts that her calls or even being heard. She has a struggling business and has been trying unsuccessfully to have children. Jackie, I want to say that I hear you. I’m a traveler on that same road. I started a business back in 2014 and it has struggled. A few years ago, I went back to 9 to 5 job to make ends meet while trying to continue with the business after work hours and…and on weekends. My wife has…has been helping as well doing the same thing.  We’ve basically been burning the candle at both ends with very little to show in the business for our efforts. So, I’ve made the decision that, not to…we’re going to mothball the business and just focus on our health and our day jobs. But now we’re facing an uncertain future with our…with our day jobs as well, both my wife and I. We’ve been married for coming on 16 years and we haven’t been able to have children in that time. So, we’ve been through that valley of heartache and disappointment, and we’ve come to the point of surrendering the outcome to the Lord and not just for having children but with our day jobs and with the business as well. We feel like we’re in the wilderness, but we also feel His presence at the same time. Jackie, just know that I’m praying for you from the depths of my heart as someone that can identify with your journey. Heavenly Father I ask You to fill Jackie with Your peace and surround her with Your love. Give her a tangible sense of Your presence and comfort and also Your guidance. And Father I ask You to bless her business and if it be Your will to bless Jackie with children. I ask all this in a loving name of Jesus our Lord and savior.

Hey everybody I’ve called a handful of times over the years to pray for people and that’s what I love about this family is now I am in need of prayer. I just jumped in the car and I’m going from Oregon down to Southern California because my mom has maybe had a stroke and we don’t know what’s going on and the doctors don’t know what’s going on. So, I’m on my way down. I will be listening to DAB probably for the next 12 hours even though I’m caught up, but will you join me in prayer for her? Her name is Kathy and I’m praying for healing in the name of Jesus asking for a touch on her body for wisdom for the doctors to figure out what’s going on right now, that she would have restored vision and restored words and that she would be able to tell what’s going on and that her body would miraculously be healed in the name of Jesus right now as I’m driving. Father keep me safe on this trip down. Speak to her heart God. Keep her from fear. Let her know that You’re with her, that You are speaking on her behalf and that You’re fighting for her. Father, thank You for my mom. Thank You for the beautiful woman that she is. Be with Kathy right now. Fill her with Your Spirit. I place her in Your hands Father, in Your very capable and good hands. Amen.

Leviticus 27:14 - Numbers 1:54

14 When a person dedicates his house as holy to the Lord, the priest shall assess it. Whatever value the priest assesses, whether high or low, will be binding. 15 But if the person who has dedicated his house redeems it, he must add one-fifth to its value in silver, so that it belongs to him again.

16 If a person dedicates any field from his family property to the Lord, its value shall be based on how much seed is needed to sow it. Land sown by six bushels[a] of barley seed is worth fifty shekels of silver. 17 If he dedicates his field during the year of Jubilee, its value stands as stated, 18 but if he dedicates his field after the Jubilee, the priest shall recalculate its value in silver based on the number of years that are left until the next year of Jubilee, and that much will be deducted from the value. 19 If the person who dedicated the field redeems it, he must add one-fifth to its value in silver, so that it may be returned to him. 20 But if he does not redeem the field but has sold the field to another person, it may no longer be redeemed. 21 When the field is released on the Jubilee, it will be set aside as holy. It belongs to the Lord as a dedicated field. It belongs to the priest as his holding.

22 If someone dedicates to the Lord a field he has purchased that is not part of his family landholding, 23 the priest shall calculate the amount of value until the year of Jubilee, so that he may pay the value on that day as something holy to the Lord. 24 In the year of Jubilee, the field shall return to the person from whom the donor bought it, to the one to whom the landholding originally belonged. 25 Every value shall be based on the sanctuary shekel, which has twenty gerahs to the shekel.[b]

26 However, no one may dedicate a firstborn from the livestock that has already been designated for the Lord as a firstborn, whether it is a head of cattle or a sheep or a goat. It already belongs to the Lord. 27 But if it is one of the unclean livestock, he may buy it back at its set value plus one-fifth. If it is not redeemed, it may be sold at its set value.

28 However, if anyone devotes anything that belongs to him to the Lord unconditionally, whether it is a human being or livestock or any part of his landholding, it may not be sold and may not be redeemed. Everything devoted unconditionally is most holy to the Lord.

29 Any person who has been devoted to destruction may not be ransomed. He must certainly be put to death.

30 But every tithe from the land, whether from the seed of the land or from the fruit of the trees, belongs to the Lord. It is holy to the Lord. 31 If anyone redeems any of his tithe, he must add one-fifth to it. 32 The tithe from the herd or the flock, that is, every tenth animal that passes under the staff of the shepherd, shall be set apart as holy to the Lord. 33 The donor must not sort out the good from the bad, and he must not make any substitutions for it. If he makes a substitution for it, then both the first animal and its substitute shall be set apart as holy. It cannot be redeemed.

34 These are the commandments that the Lord commanded Moses for the people of Israel at Mount Sinai.

The First Census of Israel

The Lord spoke to Moses in the Wilderness of Sinai, in the Tent of Meeting, on the first day of the second month, in the second year after they had come out of the land of Egypt. He said, “Take a census of the entire community of the people of Israel, according to their clans and their fathers’ houses.[c] Count the names of every male, one by one, twenty years old and up, all who are of age to serve in Israel’s army. Aaron and you are to register them by their military units.[d] A man from each tribe will be with you. Every one of them will be the head of his fathers’ house. These are the names of the men who will assist you:

from Reuben, Elizur son of Shedeur;
from Simeon, Shelumiel son of Zurishaddai;
from Judah, Nahshon son of Amminadab;
from Issachar, Nethanel son of Zuar;
from Zebulun, Eliab the son of Helon;
10 from the sons of Joseph:
from Ephraim, Elishama son of Ammihud;
from Manasseh, Gamaliel son of Pedahzur;
11 from Benjamin, Abidan son of Gideoni;
12 from Dan, Ahiezer son of Ammishaddai;
13 from Asher, Pagiel son of Ochran;
14 from Gad, Eliasaph son of Deuel;
15 from Naphtali, Ahira son of Enan.”

16 These were the men chosen from the community, the chiefs of the tribes of their fathers. They were the heads of Israel’s divisions.[e] 17 Moses and Aaron brought together these men, who had been designated by name. 18 They assembled the entire community on the first day of the second month, and they recorded the people’s ancestry by their clans,[f] by their fathers’ houses, listing the names of those who were twenty years old and up, one by one. 19 Moses registered them in the Wilderness of Sinai, exactly as the Lord commanded him.

20 The male descendants[g] of Reuben, Israel’s firstborn, were registered from their family records, according to their clans, according to their fathers’ houses, listing one by one the names of every male twenty years old and up, all who were of age to serve in the army. 21 Those who were registered from the tribe of Reuben totaled 46,500.

22 The male descendants of Simeon were registered from their family records, according to their clans, according to their fathers’ houses, listing one by one the names of every male twenty years old and up, all who were of age to serve in the army. 23 Those who were registered from the tribe of Simeon totaled 59,300.

24 The male descendants of Gad were registered from their family records, according to their clans, according to their fathers’ houses, listing the names of those twenty years old and up, all who were of age to serve in the army. 25 Those who were registered from the tribe of Gad totaled 45,650.

26 The male descendants of Judah were registered from their family records, according to their clans, according to their fathers’ houses, listing the names of those twenty years old and up, all who were of age to serve in the army. 27 Those who were registered from the tribe of Judah totaled 74,600.

28 The male descendants of Issachar were registered from their family records, according to their clans, according to their fathers’ houses, listing the names of those twenty years old and up, all who were of age to serve in the army. 29 Those who were registered from the tribe of Issachar totaled 54,400.

30 The male descendants of Zebulun were registered from their family records, according to their clans, according to their fathers’ houses, listing the names of those twenty years old and up, all who were of age to serve in the army. 31 Those who were registered from the tribe of Zebulun totaled 57,400.

32 The male descendants of Joseph who were the descendants of Ephraim were registered from their family records, according to their clans, according to their fathers’ houses, listing the names of those twenty years old and up, all who were of age to serve in the army. 33 Those who were registered from the tribe of Ephraim totaled 40,500.

34 Those who were male descendants of Manasseh were registered from their family records, according to their clans, according to their fathers’ houses, listing the names of those twenty years old and up, all who were of age to serve in the army. 35 Those who were registered from the tribe of Manasseh totaled 32,200.

36 The male descendants of Benjamin were registered from their family records, according to their clans, according to their fathers’ houses, listing the names of those twenty years old and up, all who were of age to serve in the army. 37 Those who were registered from the tribe of Benjamin totaled 35,400.

38 The male descendants of Dan were registered from their family records, according to their clans, according to their fathers’ houses, listing the names of those twenty years old and up, all who were of age to serve in the army. 39 Those who were registered from the tribe of Dan totaled 62,700.

40 The male descendants of Asher were registered from their family records, according to their clans, according to their fathers’ houses, listing the names of those twenty years old and up, all who were of age to serve in the army. 41 Those who were registered from the tribe of Asher totaled 41,500.

42 The male descendants of Naphtali were registered from their family records, according to their clans, according to their fathers’ houses, listing the names of those twenty years old and up, all who were of age to serve in the army. 43 Those who were registered from the tribe of Naphtali totaled 53,400.

44 These are the men who were registered by Moses and Aaron and twelve tribal chiefs of Israel, each representing his fathers’ house. 45 So all of the Israelite men twenty years old and up, who were of age to serve in Israel’s army, were registered according to their fathers’ houses. 46 Those who were registered totaled 603,550.

The Levites Exempted

47 But the Levites were not registered along with the others on the basis of their fathers’ tribe, 48 for the Lord had said to Moses, 49 “You are not to register the tribe of Levi, neither will you take a census of them along with the other Israelites. 50 Instead, appoint the Levites over the Dwelling of the Testimony[h] and over all its furnishings and over everything that belongs to it. They are to carry the Dwelling and all its furnishings. They are to take care of it, and they are to camp around it. 51 Whenever the Dwelling is to move, the Levites will take it down, and whenever the Dwelling is to stop for a new camp, the Levites will set it up. Any unauthorized person who comes near it must be put to death. 52 The Israelites will set up camp, everyone in his own camp and under his own standard, according to their military divisions. 53 But the Levites will camp around the Dwelling of the Testimony so that wrath will not fall on the Israelite community. In this way the Levites will perform the duties for the Dwelling of the Testimony.”

54 So the Israelites did everything that the Lord commanded Moses, exactly as he commanded.

Footnotes:

  1. Leviticus 27:16 A homer. A bushel of grain weighs about fifty pounds.
  2. Leviticus 27:25 The exact value of most ancient weights and measures is uncertain. A shekel is about 10 to 12 grams or .4 to .5 ounce, with the sanctuary shekel being slightly larger than the common shekel. The sanctuary likely had its own set of official weights.
  3. Numbers 1:2 Because Israel’s social structure was based on kinship, the fathers’ house (or sometimes the father’s house) was one of the basic social units of Israel. The fathers’ house seems to have been smaller than the tribe and clan but larger than the immediate family. However, the use of the term fathers’ house does not seem to be consistent. Every level of Israelite social structure was a fathers’ house, though they were also called by other names.
  4. Numbers 1:3 Literally all those going out with the army. Israel’s army was arranged in geographical units, somewhat like the units of the US National Guard. Israel’s geographic and social units were also family units.
  5. Numbers 1:16 Literally thousands
  6. Numbers 1:18 Or extended family (Hebrew mishpachah)
  7. Numbers 1:20 Literally sons
  8. Numbers 1:50 Traditionally Tabernacle, but Dwelling more clearly expresses the meaning of the term. The Testimony is the set of tablets that contained the Ten Commandments.

Mark 11:1-26

Jesus’ Triumphal Entry Into Jerusalem

11 As they approached Jerusalem, at Bethphage and Bethany, on the Mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples and told them, “Go into the village ahead of you. As soon as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, on which no one has ever sat. Untie it and bring it here. If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you doing this?’ say, ‘The Lord needs it, and he will send it back here without delay.’”

They left and found a colt on the street, tied at a door; and they untied it. Some who were standing there asked them, “What are you doing, untying that colt?” The disciples answered them just as Jesus had instructed them, and the men let them go.

They brought the colt to Jesus, threw their garments on it, and Jesus sat on it. Many people spread their garments on the road. Others spread branches that they had cut from the fields. Those who went in front and those who followed were crying out,

Hosanna![a]
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord![b]
10 Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David!
Hosanna in the highest!

11 Jesus went into the temple courts in Jerusalem and looked around at everything. Since it was already late, he went out to Bethany with the Twelve.

Jesus Curses a Fig Tree

12 The next day, after they had set out from Bethany, Jesus was hungry. 13 When he saw a fig tree in leaf in the distance, he went to see if he might find anything on it. When he came to it, he found nothing but leaves, since it was not the season for figs. 14 Jesus said to it, “May no one ever eat fruit from you again!” And his disciples were listening.

Jesus Cleanses His Father’s House

15 They came to Jerusalem. Jesus went into the temple area and began to drive out those who were selling and buying in the temple courts. He overturned the tables of the money changers and the chairs of those who were selling doves. 16 He would not allow anyone to carry any merchandise through the temple courts. 17 He began to teach them: “Is it not written: ‘My house will be called a house of prayer for all nations’?[c] But you have made it ‘a den of robbers’!”[d]

18 The chief priests and the experts in the law heard this and were looking for a way to kill him. Indeed they were afraid of him, because the whole crowd was amazed at his teaching.

19 When evening came, Jesus and his disciples would leave the city.

The Withered Fig Tree

20 As they passed by in the morning, they saw the fig tree withered down to the roots. 21 Peter remembered and said, “Rabbi, look! The fig tree that you cursed has withered.”

22 Jesus replied, “Have faith in God. 23 Amen I tell you: Whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be lifted up and thrown into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says will happen, it will be done for him. 24 Therefore I tell you, everything that you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours. 25 Whenever you stand praying, if you have anything against anyone, forgive him, so that your Father in heaven may forgive you your sins. 26 But if you do not forgive, your Father in heaven will not forgive your sins.”[e]

The Earth Shaken

God is our refuge and strength,
a helper who can always be found in times of trouble.
That is why we will not fear when the earth dissolves

Its waters roar and foam.
The mountains quake when it rises. Interlude

God is in her. She will not fall.
God will help her at daybreak.
Nations are in turmoil. Kingdoms fall.
God raises his voice. The earth melts.
The Lord of Armies is with us.
The God of Jacob is a fortress for us. Interlude
Come, look at the works of the Lord.
What a wasteland he has made of the earth!
He makes wars cease to the end of the earth.
He shatters the bow. He cuts up the spear.
He burns the carts[b] with fire.
10 “Be still, and know that I am God.
I will be exalted among the nations.
I will be exalted on the earth.”

11 The Lord of Armies is with us.

Leviticus 25:47-27:13, Mark 10:32-52, Psalms 45:1-17, Proverbs 10:22

Today is the 2nd day of March welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I am Brian it is wonderful to be here with you today as we get moved into this brand-new month that we find ourselves in, the third month of the year. And I’m having a hard time believing that it’s the third month the here already. It seems like we just got started, but here we are day-by-day, step-by-step. And, so, let’s continue the journey. We’re reading from the Evangelical Heritage Version this week and picking up where we left off yesterday in the book of Leviticus. Today, Chapter 25 verse 47 through 27 verse 13.

Commentary:

Okay. So, in the Gospel of Mark we are on our way with Jesus and His disciples and those following along toward Jerusalem. This is not just any trip to Jerusalem. This is the trip that Jesus will be arrested, and He won’t leave before He dies and is resurrected. And we talked about some of this as we went through the Gospel of Matthew, and we will talk about it every time that we encounter it because there’s only four times that we’ll encounter this territory. And there’s a lot for us to learn about what it is supposed to look like, what our lives are actually supposed to be shaped like and oriented toward in this long walk to Jerusalem. And, so, we encountered the story today of James and John wanting to be on His…on Jesus left and right when He enters His glory. In the Gospel of Matthew, it's…it’s their mom that does the asking. In the gospel of Mark, they’re asking themselves. But that ask and Jesus’ response gives us the shape of life and an understanding of authority in a different way and God’s kingdom. So, they are expecting something to happen in Jerusalem. Jesus has explicitly told them what’s going to happen, but the Gospels tell us that they don’t…they don’t get it. They don’t understand what He’s saying. And, so, they are expecting something to happen. And in their worldview the Messiah does things. And what they want the Messiah to do what they are expecting the Messiah to do if He were to come in their time would be to defeat Rome or at least to defeat it to the point that all of the Romans and all the Roman things, the Roman culture, any kind of inbred culture would be pushed out, pushed away and that the land will be restored completely to God. And, so, if there is even a remote chance that this is gonna happen then they want on the ground floor. Like, they have left everything to follow Jesus. They believe in Him. And, so, when He comes into His kingdom or into His glory and things get set in motion they want to be there in authority on His right and on His left. Of course, He tells them that’s not it His to give, but they will have to drink from the same cup that he is about to drink from. And then there is this teaching moment about authority in God’s kingdom, about kinda climbing the ladder of success, as it were in God’s kingdom. Trying to be the one on the right or the left, trying to be the one that’s seen, trying to be the one…trying to be the one that’s famous. Jesus says, “look” and I quote, “you know that those who are considered rulers over the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great one’s exercise authority over them. But that is not the way it is to be among you. Instead, whoever wants to be great among you will be your servant and whoever wants to be the first among you will be a slave of all. For even the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve and to give His life as a ransom for many.” That is a very, very, very different posture and look at the world than the way we normally look at things and the way that our cultures operate. What Jesus is telling his disciples, and we are also His disciples friends, is that we must lead with humility, that we must serve and that is actually leadership. Not the big bluster and authority and commands and demands. But leading by example two humility, this is what is supposed to be common and utterly normal among disciples, among the body of Christ, among those who follow Jesus. And it’s not like we weren’t just kind of talking about this even yesterday. It’s not like we haven’t encountered this before. But we’re encountering it over and over for reason. This is really really important because all…all of our climbing and all our demands and all of our condescension and all of our arrogance, this doesn’t do anything in God’s kingdom. This is just us operating in the culture where Jesus is saying this is totally different way to do this. Humble yourselves. Watch what you do and say. Understand that you are commissioned as an ambassador of the king, the most high king, the most high God. You are commissioned as an ambassador. You are carrying the authority of heaven, not to rule over people or condescend to people or demand things of people, to serve people with the same posture that our Father has toward us. Love, love, and more love. Patience, long-suffering, kindness. We could name all of the fruits of the Spirit. These are the things that are to be cultivated within us. These concepts aren’t going to go away, at least in the Bible. We can close the Bible and walk away from them, but they’re not going to go away in the Bible. This is the posture of God’s people. This is what things are supposed to look like. And that is very different than what we get seduced into in our culture. And, so, let’s just give some thought, right, some time, some openhearted time to what we’re actually after here, what we’re going for. What do we get if we win? What is this supposed to look like if we continue on the journey that we’re on? And maybe it’s time to get on a different path, the narrow one, the one that leads to life, the one that few ever find.

Prayer:

Holy Spirit, come into this because these postures that we learn by example from the Savior and from His lips, they show us the posture that we are to assume in our lives, and we confess that although we walk that path from time to time many times, we’re nowhere near it. And that has got to change. We must consistently walk in a straight line toward the goal of being holy and set apart and available to You to be Your hands and feet in this world, which means we got to pry our gripping hands off of some things and let them go. Show us what that’s supposed to look like for us because this can make remarkable remarkable change in the rest of this year. Come Holy Spirit we pray. In the name of Jesus we ask. Amen.

Announcements:

dailyaudiobible.com, that is home base and it is the website and its where you find out what’s going on around here.

What is going on around here right now around the world is that today is…is a special day on the Christian calendar. This is known as Ash Wednesday. And, so, for some of you, you’re well aware of that. This is the beginning of the season of lent and maybe you’re attending a Ash Wednesday service of some sort today during the day or this evening. But you also may be like, what are you talking about? This is like all new to me. I don’t know. But maybe you have been at a gas station or in a grocery store somewhere and you’ve seen people with ashes rubbed on their forehead. That is because they have gone to some type of service or some kind of observance and had those ashes applied to their foreheads. And they walk around. It’s sort of like a modern-day expression of sackcloth and ashes, which is a symbol of what can be a symbol of mourning, but of repentance, of humbling oneself. And, so, those ashes, they represent our awareness of how undeserving that we are in and of ourselves to have any hope in any way of being made right before God. It is through Jesus that these things are possible, but this season that begins on Ash Wednesday begins the season of Lent and brings us all the way until Easter morning. Is a season of repentance and a season of contemplation and a season of withdrawing from ourselves some things that can be very, very distracting to us focusing on the fact that it cost something precious to give us what we take easily for granted. And that is the ability to enter boldly into the presence of God as a son or a daughter. The season of Lent, leading us to such an important day, resurrection day, the day that we hang all of our hopes on, that Jesus rose from the dead, victorious. Before we just celebrate that there is a season that allows us to focus on what it cost. And a lot of times you hear people say, yeah, I’m given up the nightly news for Lent or I’m giving up chocolate candy bars for Lent or…or whatever. Fasting is definitely part of it, withholding from ourselves certain gratifications or pleasure, something that we withdraw from so that when we think of that thing and it’s missing from our lives right now, we are reminded, we are focusing on something. We are giving our hearts to contemplating what it cost, what sin does to us, what sin is doing to our species, what sin does to humans. Because at its most basic level, it separates us from God. And we were not made that way. And, so, certainly if you’re observing Lent and candy bars are the thing that will help you remember that the most, then certainly follow the leading of the Holy Spirit. Really what we’re doing by withholding something from our lives or fasting from something in our lives is to begin to be aware that everything needs to be on the table, everything about us. It’s a time where we humble ourselves under the guidance of the Holy Spirit and open our hands, just open our hands and walk openhanded and say I am nothing without You, I have learned the lesson of the wilderness. I am utterly dependent upon You. And, so, whatever I’m holding onto, whatever is in my life I offer up to You. And not everything is bad in our lives. Like, we have some things that we struggle with that we know we shouldn’t be doing or we shouldn’t be involved in or that we need to move away from or that they are simply not helpful or healthy. We know those things. But to be openhanded and say even the good things, maybe I have subtly and slowly put something between You and I Lord. And this thing is good thing and belongs in my life but I’m putting it in a place that makes it idol in my life, which makes it a profoundly bad thing for me. I need You to shift the furniture of my life around. I need You to move in what needs to be here and I need You to move out with does not, and I open my hands and I humble myself openly before You as I contemplate the fact that You gave everything for me, and I didn’t deserve anything, and You didn’t owe anyone anything. Your love would not stop pursuing me and I will have nothing between us because anything between us is not healthy. This is the essence of the season of Lent that leads us to resurrection day, and we get to resurrection day…well…when we reach Holy week and Maundy Thursday, and Good Friday and Holy Saturday and then Easter Sunday. But if we have been contemplating, if we have been preparing our hearts to move through those days, then we can fully celebrate and rejoice on Easter because we have been contemplating how sin separates us from God and how sin brings us to death, but that we have been rescued from that outcome because of what Easter represents, the resurrection of Jesus from the dead. And, so, that’s where we find ourselves in the year so far. That’s the season that we are moving into. You won’t find Lent or anything like that in the Bible although you’ll certainly find the principles of fasting, withdrawing, and humbling ourselves and getting rid of the idols and all of the things that we just talked about are certainly in the Bible. But Lent is a season where that is consolidated, and it’s been this way for well over a millennia. It’s certainly not a command in the Scriptures. And, so, we’re not trying to any way say you need to observe Lent. I didn’t grow up observing Lent. But I do now. It’s meaningful to me. There is a rhythm to it. It has made Easter a lot more than, you know, looking for hidden eggs or candy baskets or for that matter even just jumping up and down and singsong songs of victory over death. And when you have really really contemplated that you shouldn’t be here, you don’t deserve what God has giving you, but He has loved you. Well…that’s that causes love to well up inside of our hearts in gratitude and it’s meaningful as we use a season to do that. So, that’s what’s going on around here. And if you want to do it and embrace Lent, then do it. If it’s not your thing and you don’t want to, then don’t. But it is a season that our brothers and sisters have been observing for an awfully long time because it can be very meaningful. And that is Ash Wednesday and the season of Lent that we’re moving into.

And that is it for today. I am Brian I love you and I’ll be waiting for you here tomorrow.

It has been such a blessing to so many thousands of people. God bless you and your family.

Hi this is Andy from Birmingham I just wanted to call in and respond to prayer request from Kim made in the 25th of Feb. I related to what you said so much, and I think of my own family. My family aren’t believers, and we have a situation I never thought would happen with my dad and I haven’t seen him since 2016. And we…we speak now on birthdays and Christmas and that’s it. So, I wanted to pray for you because I think the one thing I found with it, it’s left me with anxiety. And I don’t know whether I’ll see my dad before he dies. I’m not quite sure. That aside, as God gave me a moment earlier in the week when it was difficult and what He did was He showed me a picture of me as a child and it really felt real and He was the Father and I was able to hug Him. And that embrace, that just was so profound. And…and…and the thing…and then what I said to Him was I want to come home. And I guess I…if…if anything you know that He's…He’s your father and He…He will give you the best embrace and He will comfort you through situations you don’t understand why they’re happening maybe or…or that that you haven’t put in place yourself. So, you know, I will pray for you and…and God bless you.

Hey family this is Lazarus feeling today and felt like a while the worst the worst of…worst sinners. So, come to you with confessions and I come to with prayers today. I’ve not been able to breathe for almost a week now since being informed that…well…that I finally lost my ability to…to have a company. Long story but I screwed it up. I…in my pride again, I did it myself and I made every wrong move possible. And just came to a point where the government said no. Done. So, now I’m staring out into a brave new world at the age of 69 trying to fix things that are way broken. I’m cleaning my heart and my soul. So, I just need your prayers. I don’t have a dime for retirement and I’m now probably I have a…I’m challenged but I have His hand. I’m in His hands. I have His help and His commitment that He and I walk out together every day. So, I’m just ready to go through a new door with Jesus and encourage everybody who is going into some tough times, that’s the way to look at the way to pray for. Ask, seek, knock, right? So, thank you everyone. Thank you for praying. Yeah, for Val in Vegas. Worst I’ve ever heard you baby. I lift you up. Victoria Soldier, Blind Tony, Brian and Jill and…and everybody. We pray together and we form an incredible vibration full of the Holy Spirit, full of God. And I just hope that I pray for all of us that we have more courage to reach out. And that’s what I’ve been doing recently. I’ve just been preaching and it’s amazing the effect it has on others and on yourself on your heart. So, God bless you. I’m out.

Good morning Daily Audio Bible family this is Elder Cambre from __ and I’m calling in this morning to give encouragement to those who have called in with their issues, fear, circumstances, their need for healing. Father God we come before Your presence this morning Lord God giving You thanks, giving You praise, giving You the honor and the glory and thanking You for who You are and thanking You Father God for being our God. Father God we put each and every one in front of You this morning Lord God and we ask Father God that You grant them their needs Lord according to Your will Lord God. Help them Father God to focus on You, to keep You…to put You first Father God and to always give You thanks, the praise, the honor, and the glory. All these things we pray in the mighty name of Jesus. Amen.

The Daily Audio Bible Reading for Wednesday March 2, 2022 (NIV)

Leviticus 25:47-27:13

47 If a resident alien living among you prospers, and if your brother Israelite becomes so indebted to him that he is sold to that alien living among you or to that alien’s family, 48 the Israelite who has been sold shall have the right to be redeemed. One of his brothers may redeem him, 49 or his uncle or his cousin may redeem him, or anyone from his immediate family[a] or extended family may redeem him, or if he prospers, he may redeem himself. 50 Together with his buyer, he shall calculate the elapsed time from the year that he was sold until the year of Jubilee, and the price to redeem him shall be based on that number of years. It shall be calculated as if he were a hired laborer. 51 If there are still many years left, he shall pay the price of redemption proportionally to the years that have passed. 52 If only a few years remain until the year of Jubilee, he shall calculate the redemption in this way: He shall pay the price of his redemption on the basis of his years of work, 53 as if he were a worker hired year by year. You shall see to it that the owner does not rule over him harshly. 54 If he has not been redeemed in any of these ways, he and his children with him shall become free in the year of Jubilee, 55 because the Israelites are servants who really belong to me. They are my servants whom I freed from the land of Egypt. I am the Lord your God.

Promises and Warnings

26 You shall not make gods that are really not gods for yourselves, and you shall not set up an image or a sacred memorial stone for yourselves, and you shall not set up a carved stone relief in your land to bow down to it, for I am the Lord your God. You shall observe my Sabbaths and revere my sanctuary. I am the Lord.

If you walk according to my regulations and keep my commandments and carry them out, I will give you rains in their season, so that the land will yield its produce and the trees in the farmland will yield their fruit. Threshing will last until the grape harvest, and the grape harvest will last until the time for sowing. You will eat your food until you are full, and you will live securely in your land.

I will give peace in the land so that you may lie down without anyone frightening you. I will eliminate ferocious animals from the land, and no sword will pass through your land. You will pursue your enemies, and they will fall before you by the sword. Five of you will pursue a hundred, and a hundred of you will pursue ten thousand, and your enemies will fall before you by the sword.

I will look on you with favor, and I will make you fruitful and will multiply you, and I will keep my covenant with you. 10 You will eat grain from previous harvests, grain long stored, until you remove the old grain to make room for the new. 11 I will place my Dwelling in your midst, and I will not at all detest you. 12 I will walk about in your midst, and I will be your God, and you will be my people. 13 I am the Lord your God, who freed you from the land of Egypt so that you would not be slaves to them. I broke the bars of your yoke so that I could make you walk upright.

14 But if you will not listen to me and do not obey all these commandments, 15 if you reject my regulations and you detest my ordinances so much that you do not obey all my commandments, so that you break my covenant, 16 I in turn will do this to you: I will inflict upon you panic, wasting disease, and fever, which will cause your eyes to fail and your vitality to slip away. You will sow your seed but get no return, for your enemies will eat it. 17 I will set my face against you. You will be beaten by your enemies, and those who hate you will rule over you. You will flee, even though nobody is pursuing you.

18 If, despite these things, you will not listen to me, I will go on to discipline you seven times for your sins. 19 I will break your proud strength and make your sky like iron and your land as hard as bronze, 20 so that your strength will be exhausted without accomplishing anything. Your land will not yield its produce, and the trees on the land will not yield their fruit.

21 If you still remain hostile to me and you are not willing to listen to me, I will multiply the plague against you seven times more according to your sins. 22 I will send against you the wild animals so that they will deprive you of your children and cut off your livestock. They will make you so few that your roads will be deserted.

23 If in spite of all these things you still refuse to be disciplined by me, and you remain hostile to me, 24 I will also remain hostile to you. I will strike you seven times more for your sins. 25 I will bring a sword on you to avenge the covenant. If you withdraw into your towns, I will send an epidemic among you, so that you will be delivered into the hand of the enemy. 26 When I break your supply of bread, ten women will bake your bread in a single oven. They will have to ration[b] your bread, and though you eat, you will not be satisfied.

27 But if, in spite of all this, you will not listen to me and remain hostile to me, 28 I will remain hostile to you in anger. I myself will discipline you seven times as much for your sins. 29 You will eat the flesh of your sons, and you will eat the flesh of your daughters. 30 I will destroy your high places,[c] cut down your incense burners, and place your corpses on the corpses of your filthy idols. With all my heart I will detest you. 31 I will turn your towns into a wasteland and make your holy places desolate, and I will not smell the pleasing aroma of your sacrifices. 32 I myself will make your land so desolate that your enemies who settle in it will be appalled at it, 33 while I scatter you among the nations and unsheathe my sword against you. Then your land will be a desolation, and your towns will be a wasteland.

34 The land will then enjoy its sabbaths during all the days of its desolation, while you are in the land of your enemies. Yes, the land will rest and enjoy its sabbaths.[d] 35 All the days when it is desolate it will rest, because it did not rest on your sabbaths when you lived there. 36 As for those of you who survive, I will bring despair into their hearts in the lands of their enemies, so that the sound of a scattered leaf will scare them away. They will flee as though fleeing from a sword, and they will fall though no one is pursuing them. 37 Each of them will stumble over his brother, as if from a sword, even though no one is pursuing him. You will have no power to stand against your enemies, 38 and you will perish among the nations. The land of your enemies will devour you. 39 Those of you who survive will rot away in the lands of your enemies because of their guilt. They will rot away because of the guilt of their ancestors. 40 They will confess their guilt and the guilt of their ancestors because of the unfaithfulness that they committed against me, and also because they remained hostile to me. 41 So I in turn became hostile to them, and I brought them into the land of their enemies. So their uncircumcised hearts will then be humbled, and they will then accept the punishment for their guilt.

42 Then I will remember my covenant with Jacob. I will remember also my covenant with Isaac and my covenant with Abraham as well. I will remember the land.

43 The land will be empty of them, so that in its desolation it may enjoy its sabbaths without them, while they suffer punishment for their guilt, because, and only because, they rejected my ordinances and they detested my statutes with all their heart.

44 Yet, for all that, when they are in the land of their enemies, I will not reject them, and I will not detest them so much that I exterminate them. I will not annul my covenant with them, for I am the Lord their God. 45 I will remember in their favor the covenant to be their God that I made with their first generation, whom I freed from the land of Egypt in the sight of the nations. I am the Lord.

46 These are the regulations, the ordinances, and the laws[e] that the Lord instituted between himself and the people of Israel at Mount Sinai through Moses.

Votive Offerings and Dedicated Things

27 The Lord spoke to Moses: “Speak to the Israelites and say this to them.”

When a person makes a special vow to the Lord which is based on the value of different classes of people, the set value of a male from twenty years to sixty years of age is fifty shekels of silver, using the sanctuary shekel as the standard. If it is a female, the value is thirty shekels. If the age is from five years to twenty years, the value is twenty shekels for a male and ten shekels for a female. If the age is from one month to five years, the value for the male is five shekels of silver, while the value for the female is three shekels of silver. If the age is sixty years or over, the value is fifteen shekels for a male and ten shekels for a female. But if anyone making a dedication is too poor to pay that standard value, he shall appear before the priest with the dedicated person, and the priest shall assess a substitute valuation for the person. The priest shall assess a value on the basis of what the person who has made the vow can afford.

If what is vowed is livestock which is acceptable as an offering to the Lord, anything that a person dedicates to the Lord is set apart as holy. 10 He may not exchange it or substitute another for it, either good for bad, or bad for good. If he substitutes one animal for another, both the animal and its substitute are set aside as holy. 11 If what has been vowed is any kind of unclean livestock, which may not be presented as an offering to the Lord, he shall present the animal before the priest 12 so that the priest may assess it. Whatever value is set by the priest, whether high or low, will be binding. 13 But if he does indeed redeem it, he must add one-fifth to its value.

Mark 10:32-52

Again Jesus Predicts His Death and Resurrection

32 They were on the road, going up to Jerusalem, and Jesus was leading them. The disciples were amazed, and the others who followed were afraid. He took the Twelve aside again and began to tell them what was going to happen to him. 33 “Look, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be betrayed to the chief priests and the experts in the law. They will condemn him to death and will hand him over to the Gentiles. 34 They will mock him, spit on him, flog him, and kill him. On the third day[a] he will rise again.”

35 James and John, the sons of Zebedee, approached him and said, “Teacher, we wish that you would do for us whatever we ask.”

36 He said to them, “What do you want me to do for you?”

37 They said to him, “Promise that we may sit, one at your right and one at your left, in your glory.”

38 But Jesus said to them, “You do not know what you are asking. Can you drink the cup that I am going to drink or be baptized with the baptism that I am going to be baptized with?”

39 “We can,” they replied.

Jesus told them, “You will drink the cup that I am going to drink and be baptized with the baptism that I am going to be baptized with. 40 But to sit at my right or at my left is not for me to give; rather, these places belong to those for whom they have been prepared.”

41 When the ten heard this, they were angry with James and John.

42 Jesus called them together and said, “You know that those who are considered rulers over the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. 43 But that is not the way it is to be among you. Instead, whoever wants to be great among you will be your servant, 44 and whoever wants to be first among you will be a slave of all. 45 For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

Jesus Heals Blind Bartimaeus

46 They came to Jericho. As Jesus and his disciples and a large crowd were leaving Jericho, a blind man, Bartimaeus the son of Timaeus, was sitting by the road begging. 47 When he heard that it was Jesus the Nazarene, he began to shout, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” 48 Many told him to be quiet, but he kept shouting all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!”

49 Jesus stopped and said, “Call him.”

They called the blind man, saying, “Cheer up! Get up. He is calling you!”

50 He tossed aside his outer garment, jumped up, and went to Jesus.

51 “What do you want me to do for you?” Jesus asked him.

The blind man replied, “Rabboni,[b] I want to see again.”

52 Jesus told him, “Go. Your faith has made you well.” Immediately he received his sight and began following Jesus on the road.

Psalm 45

Psalm 45

The Wedding of the Victorious King

Heading

For the choir director. According to “Lilies.”[a]
By the Sons of Korah. A maskil. A love song.

Introduction

My heart is bubbling over with a beautiful theme.
I am reciting my works for the King.
My tongue is the pen of a rapid writer.

The Glory of the Royal Groom

You are the most beautiful of the sons of Adam.
Grace is poured out on your lips.
Therefore God has blessed you forever.

Strap your sword on your thigh, you mighty warrior,
in your splendor and your majesty.
In your majesty advance successfully.
Ride forward in the cause of truth, humility, and righteousness.
Let your right hand teach you awesome deeds.
Your arrows are sharpened.
Let peoples fall beneath you.
Your arrows are in the heart of the king’s enemies.

Your throne, O God, is forever and ever.
The scepter of your kingdom is a scepter of justice.
You love righteousness and hate wickedness.
Therefore God, your God, has anointed you with the oil of joy
more than any of your companions.

Myrrh, aloes, and cassia perfume all your garments.
From ivory palaces stringed instruments make you glad.
Daughters of kings are among your honored attendants.
The royal wife[b] stands at your right hand in gold from Ophir.

The Beauty of the Bride

10 Hear, O daughter, look and listen.
Forget your people and your father’s house,
11 because the king desires your beauty.
Because he is your lord, bow down to him.
12 Then the daughter of Tyre will come with a gift.
The richest people will seek your favor.
13 The princess, who waits inside, is all glorious.
Her dress is interwoven with gold.
14 In embroidered garments she is led to the king.
Virgins who follow her as attendants are brought to you.
15 They are brought with joyful celebration.
They enter the palace of the king.

The Glory of the King’s Children

16 Your sons will take the place of your fathers.
You will make them princes in all the earth.
17 I will preserve the memory of your name through all generations.
Therefore peoples will praise you forever and ever.

Leviticus 24:1-25:46, Mark 10:13-31, Psalms 44:9-26, Provers 10:20-21

Today is the 1st day of March welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I am Brian and it’s great to be here with you today as we greet the threshold, the brand-new beginning of a brand-new month. We’ve never lived this month. We’ve lived other March’s, but not this one. And there’s a story to tell. Out there, the story of this month. How are we gonna tell it. We’re gonna tell it with the choices that we make and the words that we say and the actions that…that we enact. And one of the ways that we can shepherd that, shepherd ourselves is by pouring the word of God into our lives each and every day. And that’s what we do here around the Global Campfire. So, it’s exciting to step through this threshold into the third month of the year, day 60 of our journey of 365 days. And even though we’re stepping into a new threshold in a brand-new month we’ll pick up right where we left off, working our way through the book of Leviticus and the giving of the law. And, so, today Leviticus chapter 24 verse 1, to 25 verse 46.

Prayer:

Father, we thank You for Your word and we thank You for bringing us safely here to this threshold, stepping into this brand-new month, this third month of the year on our journey. And we look back over the first two months and thank You. Thank You. You have rescued us, You have given us wisdom, You have helped us, You have redeemed us and we are grateful, and we are grateful for the instruction. But if we just hear the word but don’t become doers, something that we’ll learn about later in the Scriptures, if it’s just words it’s not doing anything but when those words go inside of us and begin to move around and they begin to become concepts to us and they begin to become realities to us than transformation is happening and that is what we’re looking for. And, so, even in the story in the Gospel of Mark today we’re Jesus, You talk about the little children coming to You, the same thing that we were talking about yesterday. Give us this heart. Give us the heart of a child when it comes to You and give us the wisdom to navigate this world with all of its splendor, but with all of its evil. But when it comes to You may our hearts be pure, trusting like a little child. You are our source. Whenever we can’t see You may we get like a little child looking for his parents. We don’t want to be out of Your sight. We don’t want to wander anywhere ever again. We want to walk with You and You want to walk with us and that is staggering. And, so, as we walk together into this month help us humble ourselves before You and trust like a child even as we move forward in our days. We pray this in the name of Jesus. Amen.

You guys, I am happy that God spared my life. And it just tells me that I am here for a reason because people some people don't…don’t or didn’t get the outcome that I got. Hi this is Dave, David the beloved child of God in Northern California. I call myself that to remind myself because it…it’s not it’s not in my heart completely. Anyways the reason I’m calling in is because I need prayer about my anger issues. It’s been a continual battle for me over the last…probably most of my life but definitely the past couple of years, especially towards my…my daughter and son in law. And they’re coming to visit. So, when you hear this message they will probably be in my home with me for a couple days. And I’m anxious about them coming because they trigger me and make me upset and they… Anyways, it’s not about their actions it’s about my anger. Please pray that the Lord will uproot this bitterness inside of me. Brian was talking the other day about being clean and unclean and how sores underneath the skin and mold and mildew below the surface can cause so much destruction. And that is apropos for my anger issue. It is exactly something that is festering, and I need help. So…and I need prayer. So, I’m praying for anyone else dealing with issues in anger and their…their tension and their relationships with their adult children. I get it. And I ask that you be praying when you hear this message because my kids will probably be in my home. So, pray for peace and honesty and love and that the Lord would be glorified. Thank you.

The Daily Audio Bible Reading for Tuesday March 1, 2022 (NIV)

Leviticus 24:1-25:46

The Holy Oil

24 The Lord spoke to Moses:

Command the Israelites to bring you clear oil from beaten[a] olives for the Light so the lamps will be kept burning continually.[b] Aaron shall set the Light before the Lord in the Tent of Meeting, outside the veil which is in front of the Testimony, every night from the evening to the morning. It is a permanent regulation throughout your generations. He shall set the lamps regularly on the pure gold lampstand before the Lord.

The Holy Bread

You shall take fine flour and bake twelve round loaves from it. Each loaf shall be made with four quarts of flour. You shall put them in two stacks, six to each stack, on the pure gold table before the Lord. Upon the stacks you shall place clear frankincense as a memorial portion for the bread. It is a gift of food[c] to the Lord. On every Sabbath day he shall arrange it before the Lord regularly. It is a permanent covenant on behalf of the Israelites. The bread shall belong to Aaron and his sons, who shall eat it in a holy place, for it belongs to him as a most holy thing from the gifts of food to the Lord, a perpetual allotment.

Blasphemy Against the Holy Name

10 A man who was the son of an Israelite woman and of an Egyptian man came along with the Israelites. This son of the Israelite woman fought with another Israelite in the camp. 11 The Israelite woman’s son blasphemed the Name[d] and cursed, so they brought him to Moses. (His mother’s name was Shelomith, daughter of Dibri, belonging to the tribe of Dan.) 12 They put him in custody to wait for a decision from the mouth of the Lord.

13 Then the Lord spoke to Moses: 14 “Take the man who cursed outside the camp, and all those who heard it shall lay their hands on his head, and the whole community shall stone him. 15 Then speak to the Israelites: If anyone curses his God, he shall bear his sin, 16 but if anyone blasphemes the name of the Lord, he must certainly be put to death; the whole community must stone him. Whether he is an alien or a citizen, when he has blasphemed the Name, he must be put to death.”

17 “If anyone hits someone and kills him, he must certainly be put to death. 18 But one who strikes and kills an animal must make restitution for it, a life for a life. 19 If anyone injures his fellow citizen, he shall have the same thing done to him as he has done: 20 fracture for fracture, eye for eye, tooth for tooth. As he injured that other person, the same is to be done to him. 21 One who strikes an animal so that it dies shall make restitution for it, but one who strikes a human being and kills him shall be put to death. 22 You shall have the same standard of justice for the alien who lives with you and for the citizen, for I am the Lord your God.”

23 After Moses had spoken this to the Israelites, the man who had cursed was taken outside the camp and stoned to death. The Israelites did as the Lord had commanded Moses.

Sabbatical Years

25 The Lord spoke to Moses at Mount Sinai, “Speak to the Israelites and say this to them.”

When you enter the land that I am giving to you, the land shall observe a sabbath rest for the Lord. For six years you may sow your field, and for six years you may prune your vineyard and gather its produce. But in the seventh year there shall be a sabbath of complete rest for the land, a sabbath for the Lord. You shall not sow your field, and you shall not prune your vineyard. You shall not reap the produce that grows by itself from your harvest or gather the grapes from your unpruned vine. It shall be a year of complete rest for the land. The sabbath of the land will, however, provide food for you—for you, for your male slaves and for your female slaves, for your hired workers and for your servants who are living with you temporarily as aliens working for you, for your livestock and for the wild animals which are in your land. You may eat all its produce.[e]

The Jubilee

You shall count off seven weeks of years. Count off seven years seven times, so that the duration of the seven weeks of years is forty-nine years. Then you shall sound loud blasts on the ram’s horn. In the seventh month on the tenth day, on the Day of Atonement, you are to have a ram’s horn sounded throughout your land, 10 so that you may set aside the fiftieth year as holy and proclaim liberty throughout the land for all its inhabitants. It shall be a Jubilee for you, so that each of you may return to his family property and each of you may return to his clan. 11 The fiftieth year shall be a Jubilee for you. You shall not sow the field, and you shall not reap the grain that grows by itself, and you shall not gather fruit from its unpruned vines. 12 Because it is a Jubilee, it shall be holy for you. You may eat its produce from the field. 13 In this year of Jubilee each of you shall return to his family property.

14 When you sell some land to your countryman, or when you buy land from your countryman, you must not cheat your brother Israelite. 15 When you buy from your countryman, set the price according to the number of years since the last Jubilee. When he sells it to you, he shall set the price according to the number of years of produce left till the next Jubilee. 16 When there are many years left, you shall increase the purchase price. When there are few years left, you shall decrease its purchase price, because what the owner is actually selling to you is the amount of produce. 17 So each of you must not cheat your countryman, but you shall fear your God, for I am the Lord your God.

18 You shall carry out my regulations, and you shall observe my ordinances. You shall carry them out, so that you may live on the land securely. 19 The land will yield its fruit, and you will eat your fill and live securely on it. 20 If you ask, “What will we eat during the seventh year, since we may not sow and we may not gather our produce?” 21 I will command my blessing for you in the sixth year, so that the land will yield enough produce for three years. 22 When you sow in the eighth year, you will still be eating from the sixth year’s crop. You will eat the sixth year’s crop until the ninth year, when its produce comes in.

23 But the land must not be sold without a right to recover it, for the land really belongs to me. You are actually resident aliens under my authority. 24 Therefore, throughout all the land that you possess, you shall grant the right of redemption for the land. 25 When your brother Israelite becomes so impoverished that he has to sell some of the land that he holds, his closest relative shall come and redeem what his brother has sold. 26 When the man who has no close relative prospers and acquires enough for the price to redeem his land, 27 he may calculate the years since he sold it, refund the difference to the man to whom he sold it, and return to his family property. 28 But if he does not acquire a sufficient amount to recover the land for himself, what he has sold shall remain under the control of the one who bought it until the year of Jubilee. It shall become free in the Jubilee, so that the seller may return to his family property.

29 When a man sells a house where he lives in a walled town, his right of redemption shall last until a full year after its sale. The time to redeem it lasts for a year. 30 But if it is not redeemed before the completion of a full year, the house which is in a town which has a wall will belong to its buyer and his descendants. It cannot be reclaimed. It will not be released in the Jubilee. 31 But the houses in the villages that have no wall around them shall be classified as part of the farmland. They have the right of redemption and shall become free in the Jubilee.

32 All the towns of the Levites and the houses in the towns which are their property have a permanent right of redemption. 33 Whatever a Levite is permitted to redeem (such as a house which he sold that had been his property in a city) will become free in the Jubilee, because the houses in the towns of the Levites are their possession among the Israelites.[f] 34 But the pastures and fields around the Levites’ towns may not be sold, for that is their permanent possession.

35 When your fellow Israelite[g] becomes so impoverished that he cannot support himself,[h] help him as you would help a resident alien or a temporary resident. Let him retain his right to work for a livelihood among you.[i] 36 You shall not take advance interest or accrued interest from him, but you shall fear your God and let your brother retain his livelihood with you. 37 You shall not lend him your money for advance interest or your food for accrued interest. 38 I am the Lord your God, who freed you from the land of Egypt to give you the land of Canaan and to be your God.

39 When your fellow Israelite becomes so indebted to you that he is sold to you, you shall not make him serve as a slave. 40 He shall remain with you as a hired laborer or a temporary resident. He shall work for you until the year of Jubilee. 41 Then he and his children with him will become free from your authority. He shall return to his family home and to his ancestral landholding, 42 for the Israelites are my servants, whom I freed from the land of Egypt. They shall not be sold in a slave sale. 43 You shall not rule over them harshly, but you shall fear your God.

44 You may buy a male slave or a female slave for yourself from the nations around you. 45 You may also buy some of the children of those who reside as aliens among you and some of their extended families who are born in your land, so that they become your property. 46 You may leave them to your children as inherited property. You may make them work as slaves for life. But as for your brothers, the Israelites, each of you must not rule over your brother harshly.

Footnotes:

  1. Leviticus 24:2 The basic meaning of the Hebrew verb ktt is “beat.” The translation assumes that oil from beaten olives is the highest grade “extra virgin” olive oil from the first crushing or pressing of the olive, done by hand.
  2. Leviticus 24:2 Continually here seems to mean all through the night, every night, as the next verse says, or it may mean that one lamp was always kept burning night and day.
  3. Leviticus 24:7 Elsewhere this word is translated an offering made by fire, a meaning that does not seem to fit the context here.
  4. Leviticus 24:11 The Name refers to the Tetragrammaton, Yahweh, which was usually written and pronounced as Lord (Adonai). Even today Jews often substitute the Name for Lord when they are speaking about God.
  5. Leviticus 25:7 Verses 4-7 seem to forbid harvesting, storing, or selling the natural produce of the land but to allow everyone to eat it freely.
  6. Leviticus 25:33 The Hebrew of the verse is difficult, so translations vary.
  7. Leviticus 25:35 Literally brother
  8. Leviticus 25:35 Literally and his hand slips with you
  9. Leviticus 25:35 The Hebrew of this sentence is difficult, so translations vary.

Mark 10:13-31

Jesus Loves Little Children

13 Some people began bringing little children to Jesus so that he would touch them. But the disciples rebuked them. 14 When Jesus saw this, he was indignant. He said, “Let the little children come to me! Do not hinder them, because the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. 15 Amen I tell you: Whoever will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.” 16 And he took the little children in his arms, laid his hands on them, and blessed them.

The Rich Young Ruler

17 As Jesus was setting out on a journey, one man ran up to him and knelt in front of him. He asked, “Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”

18 Jesus said to him, “Why do you call me good? No one is good except one—God. 19 You know the commandments. ‘You shall not murder. You shall not commit adultery. You shall not steal. You shall not give false testimony. You shall not defraud. Honor your father and mother.’”[a]

20 The man replied, “Teacher, I have kept all these since I was a child.”

21 Jesus looked at him, loved him, and said to him, “One thing you lack. Go, sell whatever you have, and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”

22 When he heard this, he looked sad and went away grieving, because he had great wealth. 23 Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, “How hard it will be for those who have riches to enter the kingdom of God!”

24 The disciples were amazed at his words. But Jesus told them again, “Children, how hard it is for those who trust in their riches to enter the kingdom of God! 25 It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.”

26 They were even more astonished and said to one another, “Who then can be saved?”

27 Jesus looked at them and said, “For people, it is impossible, but not for God, because all things are possible for God.”

28 Peter began to say to him, “See, we have left everything and followed you.”

29 Jesus said, “Amen I tell you: There is no one who has left home or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields, for my sake and for the sake of the gospel, 30 who now at this time will fail to receive one hundred times as much: houses, brothers, sisters, mothers, children, and fields (along with persecutions)—and in the coming age: eternal life. 31 But many who are first will be last, and the last will be first.”

Psalm 44:9-26

Present Defeat

But now you have rejected and humbled us,
and you do not go out with our armies.
10 You made us turn back before the foe,
and those who hate us have taken plunder for themselves.
11 You give us up for food like sheep,
and you have scattered us among the nations.
12 You sold your people for no great price,
and you have not profited from their sale.
13 You have made us a reproach to our neighbors,
scorn and ridicule to those around us.
14 You have made us a laughingstock among the nations,
a reason for the peoples to shake their heads.
15 All day my disgrace is right in front of me,
and the shame on my face covers me,
16 because of the voice of the slanderer and reviler,
because of the enemy and avenger.
17 All this came on us, though we had not forgotten you.
We had not been false to your covenant.
18 Our hearts had not turned back.
Our steps had not slipped off your path.
19 But you crushed us and made us a home for jackals,
and you covered us with the shadow of death.
20 If we had forgotten the name of our God
or spread out our hands to a foreign god,
21 would not God have discovered this,
since he knows the secrets of the heart?
22 Yet for your sake we are killed all day long.
We are considered sheep to be slaughtered.

Present Plea

23 Get up! Why do you sleep, O Lord? Wake up!
Do not reject us forever.
24 Why do you hide your face?
Why do you forget our misery and our oppression?
25 For our souls bow down to the dust.
Our bellies cling to the earth.
26 Stand up! Help us!
Redeem us because of your mercy.

Proverbs 10:20-21

20 The tongue of a righteous person is fine silver.
The heart of a wicked person has little value.
21 The lips of a righteous person shepherd many,
but stubborn fools die for lack of sense.
