Jeremiah 49:23-50:46, Titus 1:1-16, Psalm 97:1-98:9, Proverbs 26:13-16

Today is the 26th day of October, welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I am Brian. It is fantastic to be here with you today, as we continue our journey forward taking the next step forward, which is going to lead us back to the book of Jeremiah. We will finish the book of Jeremiah this week and it is a longer book and so we’ve camped out for a while now, but we are reaching its conclusion. When we get to the New Testament, we will enter a new letter from the apostle Paul. Of course, we finished second Timothy yesterday so, we sort of bid farewell to the apostle Paul because that is thought to be the last writing of his life, and it’s pretty well indicated in the letter itself, but we still have a couple short letters left to work with as we move through the New Testament that are from Paul and Titus is one of them. So, we’ll talk about that when we get there, but first we’re reading from the New International Version this week. Jeremiah chapter 49 verse 23 through 50 verse 46.

Introduction to Book of Titus:

Alright, so as we we’re talking about just a few minutes ago when we started today, we have a new letter to move into, this is known as Titus. It is a letter from the apostle Paul. Although many scholars dispute these pastoral epistles in terms of whether Paul wrote it or whether it was in the next generation of Pauline school of theology and thought, not that there was such a thing, but this was passed down and then these were written by a later generation. And we already talked about that when we talked about I Timothy. The reason, well, there’s a number of reasons that specific kinds of scholars would think things like this and it’s not to denigrate the New Testament in any way it’s just thought that certain structures, certain ways of doing things in the early church, church governance type things were developments that didn’t happen in Paul’s lifetime and it’s not a new phenomenon, like, this is been thought, these kinds of disputes, have been thought for a long time, centuries. But tradition certainly gives us this from Paul and it is part of the three letters known as the pastoral letters. And we’re like a little bit out of order because we read I Timothy and probably in time chronologically, what would’ve happened is that I Timothy and Titus were likely written simultaneously or pretty close together, whereas II Timothy is thought to be the last thing Paul wrote. And so, the way that the scenario goes is that Paul was imprisoned in Rome, was kind of house arrested, like had some mobility, had some freedoms but was still under arrest to stand trial before the Emperor and was subsequently released from that first imprisonment. And so, Paul goes on another missionary journey then and during that travel is when I Timothy and Titus were probably written and then was rearrested under Emperor Nero and was thrown into the dungeon that he described in II Timothy that we read yesterday and then from there, was executed. And so, if Paul’s released and Titus accompanies Paul to the island of Crete and they’re going to share the good news there and the Cretans had never heard the good news, they didn’t know about Jesus and they were known to be very carnal people. But when Paul shared the good news, faith arose and a little church formed. So, Paul left Titus to form the church and to form the leadership around the church so that they could navigate their culture like all of the other churches. And this wouldn’t be work that Titus was completely unfamiliar with. Paul had sent him to do this kind of thing to be an ambassador, carrying the letters to different churches, going into difficult situations in churches and reporting back to Paul. This would be something that Titus had experience with and so Paul then leaves Titus on the island of Crete to form this church and then departs. And while he’s traveling, then, right, I Timothy, a letter to his son in the faith and the pastor in Ephesus, Timothy and also writes a letter and sends it back to the island of Crete to Titus. Certainly, encouraging Titus to continue his work. The work that had been assigned, but also now it’s in writing, right, so Titus has this letter that grants him apostolic authority from the apostle Paul and it’s in writing and so as we’ve seen in other letters from Paul people came in after Paul left and tried to change all kinds of things and started questioning all kinds of things, especially Paul’s authority. So now this late in the game, Paul understands some of this, so this letter in writing authorizes Titus to essentially work in Paul’s name in organizing this congregation that is being established in Crete. And church governance structure that’s found in the pastoral epistles tells Titus about pastors and criteria, and deacons and criteria to look for in them, very similar to what we read in I Timothy. But for Paul to put it in writing in a letter to Titus and send it back not only gives Titus, Paul’s authority but also gives instructions so these Cretins who have accepted the good news they don’t know what a deacon is a pastor is and so Paul puts it in writing for Titus so that Titus can say see this, this is how we do this this, this is what Paul is telling us to do. And again as we move through those portions of the letter, we will recognize this criteria and again anyone in seminary or moving toward ordained ministry is likely to encounter these passages in the New Testament, it is likely to be a part of a discernment process, it’s likely to be part of, of the ordination process because as, as we’ve talked about before, it may look like an easy job, but it is not an easy job to lead God’s people. So, with that in mind, Titus chapter 1.

Prayer:

Father, we thank You for Your word and thank You for this new territory that we are in the letter to Titus and even as we round the corner and move to conclude the book of Jeremiah, we invite You Holy Spirit, to come, lead us into all truth, lead us into what we need to absorb from the Scriptures and apply these things to our lives, shifting paradigms, changing the entire story because that’s what You do and that’s what You have done. You have changed our entire story. The ending of our story is very different than the one we were living before we understood how desperately You love us. And so, we are grateful and we come to the Scriptures each and every day to be fed by You that You might lead us into all truth, that You might lead us in the way that we should go. That You might give us context and understanding. Holy Spirit, come we pray in the name of Jesus we ask. Amen.

Prayer and Encouragements:

Hello DAB family this is Tony the Truck Driver. Just checking in, I know I haven’t called as much as I used to but I’m still listening every day, still praying for everybody and all that, I was just real encouraged to call in cause I heard my brother, CoolBrother2003, gave me a shout out and it just dawned on me how many lives we’ve touched, you know, praying for each other and over the years I’ve been listening for probably about the same time, over ten years. It just, never stops amazing me, the community and the family that we have here, that we can pray for each other and just be connected. I just want to thank Brian and Jill and the whole DAB family for this platform and thanks you guys, just never-ending doing God’s work. And I just want to encourage everybody that we continue to do His work, to be His hands and His feet in this world. With so many things going on that we have thing Global Campfire to come to that we could just fellowship with each other and pray for each other is amazing. And I just wanna give a shout out to everybody there, Asia this morning, I know she’s been listening for a while. We just lift you up Asia. Whatever you’re going through, the Lord knows you and He knows what you’re going through and just trust Him to see you through. And for everybody here DAB family, I love you. Let us continue to be His hands and feet. Shout out to my brother Blind Tony and let us just continue to do our Father’s work. Thank you DAB, love you guys. Bye Bye.

I’m calling from Georgia and I was just calling to say how grateful I am to the Daily Audio Bible with all the people who call in for prayer requests, for the reading and just the explanation of the Scriptures. Like many of you, I’ve had my spot on my porch, 5/530, the darkness and my dog. And I just sit here and pray and hear what is said and it is just a very, very refreshing time of my day. And I just wanna say I’m thankful for it, all the work that goes into it and all the people who are so willing to participate and share. My prayer request is I am a teacher and a coach in the public school system. And I just want to claim Ephesians 6 that I will work as if I’m working for the Lord that I will shine for Him and be a difference that people see. I wanna be successful at it, I want to be helpful and I want God to be glorified to do what I do. So, I just ask that you pray for public school teachers and coaches as we are in the midst of an educational world that doesn’t necessarily want God to be a part of it. So, thank you.

Hi Daily Audio family. My name’s Kate, I’ve been listening to Daily Audio Bible for a good ten years now. This is my first time calling in actually. I’m in the UK here and just asking for prayer for mine and my husband’s financial situation. My husband was running a business that really struggled through the pandemic and just about came out the other side and then it just, a couple things happened where it just kind of fell, fell flat really. So, he had to get a job. He’s looking to close the business that was six months ago but now He’s just lost that job, it was a temporary position. We thought it might go on longer but he just left the job and then the business just took a severe turn in the last 24 hours as well. So, financially it’s not good for the business and us personally. There’s gonna be a lot of debt involved and his lawyers were taken out in our names and it just is gonna fall back on us. So, if you could pray for our financial situation, my husband could get a job and that we could pay of these debts. We have two small toddlers, if you could pray that everything is covered. We would really appreciate that, thank you. And then just pray that we just continue to walk in peace. We know God’s got it but it’s hard emotionally sometimes, especially in the last 24 hours, there’s been a lot of tears. So, thank you so much for praying, love you all.

Hello everyone. I don’t know how to say this and I have been trying over and over and over again to say it. I just want someone to hear that I am going through some struggles, mentally, emotionally, spiritually. I have confessed and I believe that Jesus is my savior but I have walked away and not been as active as I used to be. And I go through a struggle that many of us also do. And it’s very depressing. It’s a very depressing thing to want to know and to glorify God and yet fall into the same, same struggle over and over again. I’m just asking for prayer. Just asking for an ear to hear my voice and to know that I am not alone in this struggle. Thank you for hearing this. Have a great rest of ya’lls day or night, whatever time it is.

Good morning, everybody this is God’s Smile here. I’ve been having quite a few thoughts this week as I do with the Lord and I thought I’d just share with everyone. It’s no great revelation it went in deep and it just blessed me. I was thinking about seeds and you know, seeds can line a package in the drawer or in your green house or in the shed and their dormant, there’s all the potential in them yet nothing happens while there in that package. And what happens to the seed it gets planted into a dark place; it gets planted into the soil. And I was thinking about our lives and seeds and the growth in God and most of all pain comes from, sorry our understanding and growing comes from planted in that dark place being placed being found ourself put in. And this seed needs a couple of things: it needs light, warmth and water. And that’s what God does to us, He brings His light upon the soil of our life and He waters it and feeds us with His word. And the warmth of His love upon us and all these things encourage us to grow our roots deep and to spring forth and push through that dark place. I was also thinking about bread too, and you know bread needs to be left to rise up to be allowed to have time for it to grow too. These pictures are just really strong in my mind and I just wanted to share them with you. Time’s ticking away again would you believe it. I love you everybody.

Good morning Daily Audio Bible, this is Aussie Bear from Australia. I’ve been just listening to the community prayers and encouragement this morning, it’s Saturday the 23rd of October and it’s just before 8am. And, I just heard a caller from Sydney, Australia, I mean, hello fellow Aussie, that just makes me so excited to hear another Aussie voice on this platform. But listening to her call, my heart just wanted to embrace her and surround her in prayer and in love and in sistership. She was talking about how she’s dealing with a lot of the aftermath from childhood abuse and I am I just wanted to tell her you are so, so courageous, you are so brave to have made the call that you made and to open up the lines for us, as listeners, to pray for you. I just, I don’t know, I went through childhood abuse myself so I can empathize with what you’re dealing with and I just pray that you know that you are being prayed for that you are being loved on and that God has you, God has you. Even though there’ve been probably so many times when you feel like you’re in the dark and that you are so lost, you are not lost to God. And He loves you and He’s got you and He will walk every step of this journey with you. And so, I just wanted to say I love you and I’m praying for you. God bless you sister.

The Daily Audio Bible Reading for Tuesday October 26, 2021 (NIV)

Jeremiah 49:23-50:46

A Message About Damascus

23 Concerning Damascus:(A)

“Hamath(B) and Arpad(C) are dismayed,
for they have heard bad news.
They are disheartened,
troubled like[a] the restless sea.(D)
24 Damascus has become feeble,
she has turned to flee
and panic has gripped her;
anguish and pain have seized her,
pain like that of a woman in labor.(E)
25 Why has the city of renown not been abandoned,
the town in which I delight?
26 Surely, her young men(F) will fall in the streets;
all her soldiers will be silenced(G) in that day,”
declares the Lord Almighty.
27 “I will set fire(H) to the walls of Damascus;(I)
it will consume(J) the fortresses of Ben-Hadad.(K)

A Message About Kedar and Hazor

28 Concerning Kedar(L) and the kingdoms of Hazor,(M) which Nebuchadnezzar(N) king of Babylon attacked:

This is what the Lord says:

“Arise, and attack Kedar
and destroy the people of the East.(O)
29 Their tents and their flocks(P) will be taken;
their shelters will be carried off
with all their goods and camels.
People will shout to them,
‘Terror(Q) on every side!’

30 “Flee quickly away!
Stay in deep caves,(R) you who live in Hazor,(S)
declares the Lord.
“Nebuchadnezzar(T) king of Babylon has plotted against you;
he has devised a plan against you.

31 “Arise and attack a nation at ease,
which lives in confidence,”
declares the Lord,
“a nation that has neither gates nor bars;(U)
its people live far from danger.
32 Their camels(V) will become plunder,
and their large herds(W) will be spoils of war.
I will scatter to the winds(X) those who are in distant places[b](Y)
and will bring disaster on them from every side,”
declares the Lord.
33 “Hazor(Z) will become a haunt of jackals,(AA)
a desolate(AB) place forever.
No one will live there;
no people will dwell(AC) in it.”

A Message About Elam

34 This is the word of the Lord that came to Jeremiah the prophet concerning Elam,(AD) early in the reign of Zedekiah(AE) king of Judah:

35 This is what the Lord Almighty says:

“See, I will break the bow(AF) of Elam,
the mainstay of their might.
36 I will bring against Elam the four winds(AG)
from the four quarters of heaven;(AH)
I will scatter them to the four winds,
and there will not be a nation
where Elam’s exiles do not go.
37 I will shatter Elam before their foes,
before those who want to kill them;
I will bring disaster on them,
even my fierce anger,”(AI)
declares the Lord.
“I will pursue them with the sword(AJ)
until I have made an end of them.
38 I will set my throne in Elam
and destroy her king and officials,”
declares the Lord.

39 “Yet I will restore(AK) the fortunes of Elam
in days to come,”
declares the Lord.

A Message About Babylon(AL)

50 This is the word the Lord spoke through Jeremiah the prophet concerning Babylon(AM) and the land of the Babylonians[c]:

“Announce and proclaim(AN) among the nations,
lift up a banner(AO) and proclaim it;
keep nothing back, but say,
‘Babylon will be captured;(AP)
Bel(AQ) will be put to shame,(AR)
Marduk(AS) filled with terror.
Her images will be put to shame
and her idols(AT) filled with terror.’
A nation from the north(AU) will attack her
and lay waste her land.
No one will live(AV) in it;
both people and animals(AW) will flee away.

“In those days, at that time,”
declares the Lord,
“the people of Israel and the people of Judah together(AX)
will go in tears(AY) to seek(AZ) the Lord their God.
They will ask the way(BA) to Zion
and turn their faces toward it.
They will come(BB) and bind themselves to the Lord
in an everlasting covenant(BC)
that will not be forgotten.

“My people have been lost sheep;(BD)
their shepherds(BE) have led them astray(BF)
and caused them to roam on the mountains.
They wandered over mountain and hill(BG)
and forgot their own resting place.(BH)
Whoever found them devoured(BI) them;
their enemies said, ‘We are not guilty,(BJ)
for they sinned against the Lord, their verdant pasture,
the Lord, the hope(BK) of their ancestors.’

“Flee(BL) out of Babylon;(BM)
leave the land of the Babylonians,
and be like the goats that lead the flock.
For I will stir(BN) up and bring against Babylon
an alliance of great nations(BO) from the land of the north.(BP)
They will take up their positions against her,
and from the north she will be captured.(BQ)
Their arrows(BR) will be like skilled warriors
who do not return empty-handed.
10 So Babylonia[d] will be plundered;(BS)
all who plunder her will have their fill,”
declares the Lord.

11 “Because you rejoice and are glad,
you who pillage my inheritance,(BT)
because you frolic like a heifer(BU) threshing grain
and neigh like stallions,
12 your mother will be greatly ashamed;
she who gave you birth will be disgraced.(BV)
She will be the least of the nations—
a wilderness, a dry land, a desert.(BW)
13 Because of the Lord’s anger she will not be inhabited
but will be completely desolate.(BX)
All who pass Babylon will be appalled;(BY)
they will scoff(BZ) because of all her wounds.(CA)

14 “Take up your positions around Babylon,
all you who draw the bow.(CB)
Shoot at her! Spare no arrows,(CC)
for she has sinned against the Lord.
15 Shout(CD) against her on every side!
She surrenders, her towers fall,
her walls(CE) are torn down.
Since this is the vengeance(CF) of the Lord,
take vengeance on her;
do to her(CG) as she has done to others.(CH)
16 Cut off from Babylon the sower,
and the reaper with his sickle at harvest.
Because of the sword(CI) of the oppressor
let everyone return to their own people,(CJ)
let everyone flee to their own land.(CK)

17 “Israel is a scattered flock(CL)
that lions(CM) have chased away.
The first to devour(CN) them
was the king(CO) of Assyria;
the last to crush their bones(CP)
was Nebuchadnezzar(CQ) king(CR) of Babylon.”

18 Therefore this is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says:

“I will punish the king of Babylon and his land
as I punished the king(CS) of Assyria.(CT)
19 But I will bring(CU) Israel back to their own pasture,
and they will graze on Carmel and Bashan;
their appetite will be satisfied(CV)
on the hills(CW) of Ephraim and Gilead.(CX)
20 In those days, at that time,”
declares the Lord,
“search will be made for Israel’s guilt,
but there will be none,(CY)
and for the sins(CZ) of Judah,
but none will be found,
for I will forgive(DA) the remnant(DB) I spare.

21 “Attack the land of Merathaim
and those who live in Pekod.(DC)
Pursue, kill and completely destroy[e] them,”
declares the Lord.
“Do everything I have commanded you.
22 The noise(DD) of battle is in the land,
the noise of great destruction!
23 How broken and shattered
is the hammer(DE) of the whole earth!(DF)
How desolate(DG) is Babylon
among the nations!
24 I set a trap(DH) for you, Babylon,
and you were caught before you knew it;
you were found and captured(DI)
because you opposed(DJ) the Lord.
25 The Lord has opened his arsenal
and brought out the weapons(DK) of his wrath,
for the Sovereign Lord Almighty has work to do
in the land of the Babylonians.(DL)
26 Come against her from afar.(DM)
Break open her granaries;
pile her up like heaps of grain.(DN)
Completely destroy(DO) her
and leave her no remnant.
27 Kill all her young bulls;(DP)
let them go down to the slaughter!(DQ)
Woe to them! For their day(DR) has come,
the time(DS) for them to be punished.
28 Listen to the fugitives(DT) and refugees from Babylon
declaring in Zion(DU)
how the Lord our God has taken vengeance,(DV)
vengeance for his temple.(DW)

29 “Summon archers against Babylon,
all those who draw the bow.(DX)
Encamp all around her;
let no one escape.(DY)
Repay(DZ) her for her deeds;(EA)
do to her as she has done.
For she has defied(EB) the Lord,
the Holy One(EC) of Israel.
30 Therefore, her young men(ED) will fall in the streets;
all her soldiers will be silenced in that day,”
declares the Lord.
31 “See, I am against(EE) you, you arrogant one,”
declares the Lord, the Lord Almighty,
“for your day(EF) has come,
the time for you to be punished.
32 The arrogant(EG) one will stumble and fall(EH)
and no one will help her up;(EI)
I will kindle a fire(EJ) in her towns
that will consume all who are around her.”

33 This is what the Lord Almighty says:

“The people of Israel are oppressed,(EK)
and the people of Judah as well.
All their captors hold them fast,
refusing to let them go.(EL)
34 Yet their Redeemer(EM) is strong;
the Lord Almighty(EN) is his name.
He will vigorously defend their cause(EO)
so that he may bring rest(EP) to their land,
but unrest to those who live in Babylon.

35 “A sword(EQ) against the Babylonians!”(ER)
declares the Lord
“against those who live in Babylon
and against her officials and wise(ES) men!
36 A sword against her false prophets!
They will become fools.
A sword against her warriors!(ET)
They will be filled with terror.(EU)
37 A sword against her horses and chariots(EV)
and all the foreigners in her ranks!
They will become weaklings.(EW)
A sword against her treasures!(EX)
They will be plundered.
38 A drought on[f] her waters!(EY)
They will dry(EZ) up.
For it is a land of idols,(FA)
idols that will go mad with terror.

39 “So desert creatures(FB) and hyenas will live there,
and there the owl will dwell.
It will never again be inhabited
or lived in from generation to generation.(FC)
40 As I overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah(FD)
along with their neighboring towns,”
declares the Lord,
“so no one will live there;
no people will dwell in it.(FE)

41 “Look! An army is coming from the north;(FF)
a great nation and many kings
are being stirred(FG) up from the ends of the earth.(FH)
42 They are armed with bows(FI) and spears;
they are cruel(FJ) and without mercy.(FK)
They sound like the roaring sea(FL)
as they ride on their horses;
they come like men in battle formation
to attack you, Daughter Babylon.(FM)
43 The king of Babylon has heard reports about them,
and his hands hang limp.(FN)
Anguish has gripped him,
pain like that of a woman in labor.(FO)
44 Like a lion coming up from Jordan’s thickets(FP)
to a rich pastureland,
I will chase Babylon from its land in an instant.
Who is the chosen(FQ) one I will appoint for this?
Who is like me and who can challenge me?(FR)
And what shepherd can stand against me?”

45 Therefore, hear what the Lord has planned against Babylon,
what he has purposed(FS) against the land of the Babylonians:(FT)
The young of the flock will be dragged away;
their pasture will be appalled at their fate.
46 At the sound of Babylon’s capture the earth will tremble;(FU)
its cry(FV) will resound among the nations.

Titus 1

Paul, a servant of God(A) and an apostle(B) of Jesus Christ to further the faith of God’s elect and their knowledge of the truth(C) that leads to godliness(D) in the hope of eternal life,(E) which God, who does not lie,(F) promised before the beginning of time,(G) and which now at his appointed season(H) he has brought to light(I) through the preaching entrusted to me(J) by the command of God(K) our Savior,(L)

To Titus,(M) my true son(N) in our common faith:

Grace and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Savior.(O)

Appointing Elders Who Love What Is Good(P)

The reason I left you in Crete(Q) was that you might put in order what was left unfinished and appoint[a] elders(R) in every town, as I directed you. An elder must be blameless,(S) faithful to his wife, a man whose children believe[b] and are not open to the charge of being wild and disobedient. Since an overseer(T) manages God’s household,(U) he must be blameless—not overbearing, not quick-tempered, not given to drunkenness, not violent, not pursuing dishonest gain.(V) Rather, he must be hospitable,(W) one who loves what is good,(X) who is self-controlled,(Y) upright, holy and disciplined. He must hold firmly(Z) to the trustworthy message as it has been taught, so that he can encourage others by sound doctrine(AA) and refute those who oppose it.

Rebuking Those Who Fail to Do Good

10 For there are many rebellious people, full of meaningless talk(AB) and deception, especially those of the circumcision group.(AC) 11 They must be silenced, because they are disrupting whole households(AD) by teaching things they ought not to teach—and that for the sake of dishonest gain. 12 One of Crete’s own prophets(AE) has said it: “Cretans(AF) are always liars, evil brutes, lazy gluttons.”[c] 13 This saying is true. Therefore rebuke(AG) them sharply, so that they will be sound in the faith(AH) 14 and will pay no attention to Jewish myths(AI) or to the merely human commands(AJ) of those who reject the truth.(AK) 15 To the pure, all things are pure,(AL) but to those who are corrupted and do not believe, nothing is pure.(AM) In fact, both their minds and consciences are corrupted.(AN) 16 They claim to know God, but by their actions they deny him.(AO) They are detestable, disobedient and unfit for doing anything good.(AP)

Psalm 97-98

Psalm 97

The Lord reigns,(A) let the earth be glad;(B)
let the distant shores(C) rejoice.
Clouds(D) and thick darkness(E) surround him;
righteousness and justice are the foundation of his throne.(F)
Fire(G) goes before(H) him
and consumes(I) his foes on every side.
His lightning(J) lights up the world;
the earth(K) sees and trembles.(L)
The mountains melt(M) like wax(N) before the Lord,
before the Lord of all the earth.(O)
The heavens proclaim his righteousness,(P)
and all peoples see his glory.(Q)

All who worship images(R) are put to shame,(S)
those who boast in idols(T)
worship him,(U) all you gods!(V)

Zion hears and rejoices
and the villages of Judah are glad(W)
because of your judgments,(X) Lord.
For you, Lord, are the Most High(Y) over all the earth;(Z)
you are exalted(AA) far above all gods.
10 Let those who love the Lord hate evil,(AB)
for he guards(AC) the lives of his faithful ones(AD)
and delivers(AE) them from the hand of the wicked.(AF)
11 Light shines[a](AG) on the righteous(AH)
and joy on the upright in heart.(AI)
12 Rejoice in the Lord,(AJ) you who are righteous,
and praise his holy name.(AK)

Psalm 98

A psalm.

Sing to the Lord(AL) a new song,(AM)
for he has done marvelous things;(AN)
his right hand(AO) and his holy arm(AP)
have worked salvation(AQ) for him.
The Lord has made his salvation known(AR)
and revealed his righteousness(AS) to the nations.(AT)
He has remembered(AU) his love
and his faithfulness to Israel;
all the ends of the earth(AV) have seen
the salvation of our God.(AW)

Shout for joy(AX) to the Lord, all the earth,
burst into jubilant song with music;
make music to the Lord with the harp,(AY)
with the harp and the sound of singing,(AZ)
with trumpets(BA) and the blast of the ram’s horn(BB)
shout for joy(BC) before the Lord, the King.(BD)

Let the sea(BE) resound, and everything in it,
the world, and all who live in it.(BF)
Let the rivers clap their hands,(BG)
let the mountains(BH) sing together for joy;
let them sing before the Lord,
for he comes to judge the earth.
He will judge the world in righteousness
and the peoples with equity.(BI)

Proverbs 26:13-16

13 A sluggard says,(A) “There’s a lion in the road,
a fierce lion roaming the streets!”(B)
14 As a door turns on its hinges,
so a sluggard turns on his bed.(C)
15 A sluggard buries his hand in the dish;
he is too lazy to bring it back to his mouth.(D)
16 A sluggard is wiser in his own eyes
than seven people who answer discreetly.

Jeremiah 48:1-49:22, 2 Timothy 4:1-22, Psalms 95:1-96:13, Proverbs 26:9-12

Today is the 25th day of October welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I’m Brian it is wonderful to be here with you today as we launch ourselves into a new workweek and, of course, pick up where we left off and take the next step forward together, which leads us back into the book of Jeremiah once again. Today, Chapter 48 verse 1 through 49 verse 22.

Commentary:

Okay. So, we finished second Timothy just a few minutes ago and we’re not done with Paul’s writings, we have a couple more short letters to read before…before we we’re finished with the apostle Paul for this year and continue forward into some of the other letters in the New Testament, but these are thought to be the last words to come from Paul, the last preserved thing that we have from Paul. And it’s pretty heartbreaking. Paul, as we learned in this letter is in a cold dungeon and winter is coming and his judgment is imminent, and the end of his life is imminent along with that judgment unless by some miracle, a very anti-Christian persecutor who is the emperor is gonna judge Paul and condemn him to die, which as church tradition tells us, is exactly what happened. I’ve actually stood in that place where tradition holds that Paul was executed. The tradition is that as a Roman citizen he was…he was condemned by the emperor and then…and then beheaded. And, so, there’s a place in Rome that commemorates this. Of course, it’s venerated with a chapel now, as so many important places in the Christian faith are. But I can remember walking down the path toward this chapel, toward this place and thinking about how monumental this person’s influence is on the world until this very day. But to read it in Timothy, to read of a dungeon that’s cold and winter’s coming and everyone abandoned Paul, it would be so easy in a circumstance like that to just…I mean you’re in jail, you have nothing to think about, but what might be coming for you. And just to think, “did this matter? Did any of this matter, because I’m gonna die. And nobody’s standing with me, everybody’s deserted me” gives the letter poignancy. And he asked Timothy to bring his scrolls and parchments and his coat. It’s pretty heartbreaking actually, to see that all the apostle Paul, right, famous from the book of Acts and all of these letters, this is where he ends up. And it’s very similar to how Jesus ended up, which lets us know that we might need to rewire in some ways our expectations because we seem to…we seem to gauge how well we’re doing with God based on how well we’re doing in life and how blessed we feel. And granted God blesses us beyond our wildest dreams and gives us more than we…we will ever be able to earn or deserve. But one of the lessons that we learn in the Scripture and one of the lessons that now will….it will not let up. It’s as if the New Testament really begins to bring this theme and it’s a theme known endurance. It becomes more and more apparent that this life of faith cannot be navigated without the ability to endure, to stick to it, to keep going, to not surrender, to not give up, even if that costs everything, even if that costs our lives. And we can hear it. We can hear it in what Paul’s saying to Timothy today. “I am already being poured out like a drink offering, and the time for my departure is near.” That is heartbreaking friends. At least to me it’s heartbreaking. Like what he’s talking about is a drink offering is his own blood being spilled out as…as he’s being executed but also that he’s pouring his very heart, every breath that he has left, pouring out everything that he can in this life in the service of Jesus, enduring to the end which is how we get to the famous verse; “I have fought the good fight.” And, so, Paul says, “I am already being poured out like a drink offering and the time for my departure is near. I have fought the good fight. I have finished the race. I have kept the faith.” And he looks forward to the crown of righteousness. So, once again, as in the life of Jesus we see that the things that we use to measure well-being and success may not actually be those kind of correct measures at all. Maybe we find that being able and having the ability to endure is even more valuable than a…large bank account. The Bible indicates to us pretty clearly that it is something we need to become accustomed to. And I think that, in part, is because enduring makes us strong. But I also think in part because it's…it’s part of the story and people have historically all along died for their faith and endured and people are doing exactly that now, enduring hardship and struggle and some are…are dying for their faith. It doesn’t seem like that’s how it ought to be. And ultimately that’s not how it will be. But from the biblical times until now that’s how it is. And Paul can look at this situation with confidence and know that the end of his mortal life wasn’t the end of him and that he had preached a message of good news and hope and that he would hope in Christ. And, so, let’s honor that as…as we leave this final writing from Paul. Even though tomorrow we’ll be picking up with Paul, this is the last writing. And, so, let’s give honor where it is due while taking the message, the lesson and applying it to our lives. Endurance is part of it. And most of us will have to endure far less then Paul. But we have brothers and sisters on this earth today because of where they are on this earth today because of what they believe in the place that they are that very well can face the very same thing Paul was facing. So, certainly, certainly we can keep the faith. Certainly we can endure and not be mad that we didn’t get that gift box from heaven on the day that we expected that gift box from heaven to bountifully bless us. Maybe we can endure. Maybe we can learn to put on our spiritual big boy pants and big girl pants and grow up and understand that so many hang in the balance between good and evil, and we actually have a mission. That’s something that Paul didn’t lose sight of, lose site of the mission that he was on. And, so, he stayed on the mission no matter what was going on. No matter whether he was in prison, no matter whether he had been beaten up, no matter whether he had been run out of town, no matter whether things were doing great or whether he was floating in the open sea wondering if he was gonna drown or sitting in a dungeon with winter coming on wondering how many hours remain in his mortal life. So, let’s not lose sight of our mission because it’s the same mission.

Prayer:

Father, we invite You into that. We thank You once again for the Scriptures. Without the Scriptures, without these letters being preserved, we wouldn’t have this story to tell each other. We wouldn’t have these reminders. We wouldn’t know that endurance is part of the story. And, so, we are grateful. And we are grateful for brothers and sisters who have gone before, who are heroes of the faith, saints of the faith, but also just brothers and sisters who endured until the end, holding true to the name of Jesus. Help us Lord to understand that this is a big story. And, so, much we focus the story around ourselves and our own well-being when it’s way bigger than any of us. We are all a part of something and we must endure to see that something come to fruition. And, so, as we journey together on this earth step-by-step, day by day sharing history together, let us know that we are in this together. We are carrying good news into dark places. Come Holy Spirit. Come into all of this we pray. In the name of Jesus, we ask. Amen.

Announcements:

dailyaudiobible.com is home base and so is the Daily Audio Bible app, home base in the palm of your hand or on your screen.

And at home base whether in the app or online you’ll find different sections. And one of those sections is the Community section. And the Community section is an important place to be familiar with because there are all the different links to the different social media places where Daily Audio Bible participates. But also, the Prayer Wall. The Prayer Wall lives there in the Community section, and it is an always on, never off resource, always a place to go and ask someone to pray for you. And people are always checking in on the Prayer Wall all over the world. And, so, maybe you’re carrying things that are too heavy and you could use a brother or sister to shoulder the load a little bit in prayer. And it’s encouraging to see people write responses, prayer back for you. But it’s also a resource for exactly that, going and praying for brothers and sisters that are getting crushed. Something or another has happened and they’re getting crushed right now and it’s gotten to the point that they’ve reached out. And we can reach back. And what good it does to…to our souls to feel connected, to feel connected even though we may be spread out by 10,000 miles and several oceans and different boundaries and countries and leadership and culture. We still have the same Lord and Savior, who knits us all together who is the head of this body that we are a part of. And its beautiful, beautiful that we can reach toward one another, day or night. So, be familiar with the Prayer Wall in the Community section.

If you want to partner with the Daily Audio Bible, if this mission to bring the spoken word of God read fresh every day and given freely to whoever will listen to it wherever they may be on this planet any time of day or night, and to build community around this daily rhythm, this is what we call coming around the Global Campfire, to be here together in community. So, if that has made a difference, if that’s life-giving than thank you for your partnership. We wouldn’t be here if we weren’t doing this together. And, so, thank you. There is a link on the homepage dailyaudiobible.com. If you’re using the app, you can press the Give button in the upper right-hand corner, or the mailing address is PO Box 1996 Spring Hill Tennessee 37174.

And, as always, if you have a prayer request or encouragement, this is what we were just talking about. You can visit the Prayer Wall, certainly, but you can just hit the Hotline button in the app, the little red button up at the top or you can dial 877-942-4253.

And that’s it for today. I’m Brian I love you and I’ll be waiting for you here tomorrow.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Hey guys, hi family this is Janice calling from Phoenix. And praise report, praise report! I called on Friday. My husband was in a critical care unit with a bleed on his brain and it did not look good. And I was told it was horrible news. OK, testing, testing all weekend. Monday…yeah…turns out they did an MRI, and the bleed is not so much there anymore which was a miracle! So, miracle alert, miracle alert! I feel bad because this is our third miracle in Dave’s life. And the Lord has spared three times. First from pancreatic cancer and then he had __ hematoma and then he had…it’s called an arachnoid something. But anyway, it’s gone, and the doctors and the nurses are freaking out. And we’re just praying to the Lord. Even the nurse who isn’t so much a God person is like, “whoa! That is a God thing.” So, please know not only is He on the throne but He’s showing up just a little bit. And He is perfect. So, all praise and glory to our Lord Jesus Christ. Anyway, I’m going to cry it out so I gotta go. I just knew you had to hear this. Please take it and know your miracle is close behind.

Hello, my amazing DAB family this is Kristen Fletcher calling from Oceanside CA. I love you so much. I love you so much. I listen to you from, let’s just say 11:00 AM to 5 PM sometimes longer every day. I’ll replay and replay and replay. But this is what I need to hear. And I just want to let you know that I absolutely love every single one of you. I love your voice. I love what you say. I laugh with you. I smile with you. I cry with you, and I pray with you most importantly. I am asking for prayer for my son’s father Paul. I wrote it on the Prayer Wall yesterday to deliver Paul from his addictions to drugs. And I want to thank everyone who prayed for Paul. I want to let you know the enemy wants Paul because I put that prayer request on the Prayer Wall and then last night Paul got high. And I know he is just…Paul is just tormented. He is just being attacked and the enemy wants him. The enemy wants to steal, kill, and destroy Paul. Paul has the potential to be such a strong brother with us, a brother of God. And, so, I’m praying for you…or that you will pray for Paul to deliver him from his addiction to drugs. I need your help family. I know we can do this with the power of prayer. So, I thank you so much for your prayers and I love you all…

Hi Daily Audio Bible family it’s the Disciple that He Loves in Ohio. I haven’t called in in a little bit. I guess I was feeling like I have asked for so much prayer that it was someone else’s turn. But God has just convicted me that there are a lot of us out there who have kids struggling with mental health and the need just doesn’t go away. My daughter has made so much progress and she just finished up her program today. She’s on a new medication and in a lot of ways she is doing better but she’s still so sad and she still doesn’t want to be alive. And I don’t want to quit praying for her and lifting her up anywhere short of total freedom and healing. So, could you just pray with me for all of us parents who have kids with mental illness who just feel really lonely sometimes and feel like we’re always reaching out and asking for help. But our need for help is so real. Dear God, please be with every parent who loves a child and is child trying to shepherd a child through a mental illness. Lord I pray that these children would have complete and total healing and I play…I pray that you would lift us up and give us strength and send people into our lives who are willing to come alongside of us and fight and battle with us and help us to not get weary in doing good. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Good morning this is Just Right from Pennsylvania. This is actually my first-time calling in. I love DAB I recently found it maybe a few months ago and I’ve been listening to it every morning and I just…I absolutely love it. So, I want to say thank you to Brian and the entire group over there at Daily Audio Bible for always delivering a wonderful message and…and just everything that you guys do. Thank you so much. I…I…I want to pray for Mike in New York that he continues to walk the path that the Lord has laid out for him, and he continues to be able to deliver a message to those he comes across. And I also want to pray from mark for…for him being able to find Jesus eventually and him being able to know…to come to know Jesus and the love that is there for him. Lastly, I want to pray for the young lady and her family moving across country. I want to just pray that her family is surrounded by love, surrounded by Jesus and that they just hold on to God’s word. And lastly I…I…I ask for prayer for my own family just for…just for a long season that we’ve been in. It feels like we’ve just been experiencing one thing after the next. And, you know, there’s been some ups and downs. There’s been some…some good times but I just want to just lift up prayer for us and just continue…continue to hold on to God’s word and continue to…to look to Jesus and not to look to our surroundings. And I thank you and I pray for everyone. Love you.

Hello Daily Audio Bible family this is Alexander Soldier for God. Today is October 21st. I just spent0 the…I’m trying to catch up the last month and a half of Daily Audio Bible that I missed due to a lot of things, but this is actually part of my praise report. I had to leave the army for various reasons so I could take care of my family better, raise them in a godly way, and spend more time with them. For about half a year we were without a home of our own. And I did work in between, and a lot of prospects fell through, a lot of things I thought would have worked fell through. And I thought God was telling me to take my family back out west to Missouri to a community we’d been to before where I felt I was being led to for the best of the family. So, we left for Missouri without a job, without a home. And through an elder of a church God blessed us with a home and with connections to find work so I can take care of my family. So, praise God and know that he can provide. I also have a prayer request for my wife and I. We have scars from packs relationship that seem to be interfering with our own intimacies and our relationship being able to be open with one another without feeling pains from old injuries. So, I pray and ask for prayer for healing for her and I, spiritually and emotionally, that we can fully love one another and be an example to our children of how to love one another better. Thank you, Daily Audio Bible for all that you’ve done for us and the support that I’ve had.

Hello everyone, my name is Crystal and I’ve been listening to this podcast for a couple of years. I just love listening to everybody’s stories and praises and it encourages me. And I’m so blessed and thankful. I’m calling today because I’m just so discouraged and hurt. I’ve been standing in the gap for my husband and our family and our children for my future children’s children. He has left my kids and living with another woman. We’ve been married for a long time, for 27 years and I’ve known him for 30. We have five children and I know that standing in the gap for him is where I’m supposed to be. God has shared this in so many ways. And I’m so blessed and thankful that I have a relationship with my Father, but I’m asking for prayers today. I’m asking for y'all’s encouragement so I can stand with no doubt just like as Abraham. I’m asking for the Lord to restore my husband’s soul so that he would love the Lord. He is lost. I’m asking for a restoration Father, for our marriage and our family and our kids. I know that they want to love my husband but they’re so full of pain and rejection. I know God is a restorative God and I know that we will be fine one day. But I ask everybody here for prayer for help so I would have some little bit of encouragement. Thank you.

Jeremiah 48:1-49:22

A Message About Moab(A)

48 Concerning Moab:(B)

This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says:

“Woe to Nebo,(C) for it will be ruined.
Kiriathaim(D) will be disgraced and captured;
the stronghold[a] will be disgraced and shattered.
Moab will be praised(E) no more;
in Heshbon[b](F) people will plot her downfall:
‘Come, let us put an end to that nation.’(G)
You, the people of Madmen,[c] will also be silenced;
the sword will pursue you.
Cries of anguish arise from Horonaim,(H)
cries of great havoc and destruction.
Moab will be broken;
her little ones will cry out.[d]
They go up the hill to Luhith,(I)
weeping bitterly as they go;
on the road down to Horonaim(J)
anguished cries over the destruction are heard.
Flee!(K) Run for your lives;
become like a bush[e] in the desert.(L)
Since you trust in your deeds and riches,(M)
you too will be taken captive,
and Chemosh(N) will go into exile,(O)
together with his priests and officials.(P)
The destroyer(Q) will come against every town,
and not a town will escape.
The valley will be ruined
and the plateau(R) destroyed,
because the Lord has spoken.
Put salt(S) on Moab,
for she will be laid waste[f];(T)
her towns will become desolate,
with no one to live in them.

10 “A curse on anyone who is lax in doing the Lord’s work!
A curse on anyone who keeps their sword(U) from bloodshed!(V)

11 “Moab has been at rest(W) from youth,
like wine left on its dregs,(X)
not poured from one jar to another—
she has not gone into exile.
So she tastes as she did,
and her aroma is unchanged.
12 But days are coming,”
declares the Lord,
“when I will send men who pour from pitchers,
and they will pour her out;
they will empty her pitchers
and smash her jars.
13 Then Moab will be ashamed(Y) of Chemosh,(Z)
as Israel was ashamed
when they trusted in Bethel.(AA)

14 “How can you say, ‘We are warriors,(AB)
men valiant in battle’?
15 Moab will be destroyed and her towns invaded;
her finest young men(AC) will go down in the slaughter,(AD)
declares the King,(AE) whose name is the Lord Almighty.(AF)
16 “The fall of Moab is at hand;(AG)
her calamity will come quickly.
17 Mourn for her, all who live around her,
all who know her fame;(AH)
say, ‘How broken is the mighty scepter,(AI)
how broken the glorious staff!’

18 “Come down from your glory
and sit on the parched ground,(AJ)
you inhabitants of Daughter Dibon,(AK)
for the one who destroys Moab
will come up against you
and ruin your fortified cities.(AL)
19 Stand by the road and watch,
you who live in Aroer.(AM)
Ask the man fleeing and the woman escaping,
ask them, ‘What has happened?’
20 Moab is disgraced, for she is shattered.
Wail(AN) and cry out!
Announce by the Arnon(AO)
that Moab is destroyed.
21 Judgment has come to the plateau(AP)
to Holon,(AQ) Jahzah(AR) and Mephaath,(AS)
22 to Dibon,(AT) Nebo(AU) and Beth Diblathaim,
23 to Kiriathaim,(AV) Beth Gamul and Beth Meon,(AW)
24 to Kerioth(AX) and Bozrah(AY)
to all the towns(AZ) of Moab, far and near.
25 Moab’s horn[g](BA) is cut off;
her arm(BB) is broken,”
declares the Lord.

26 “Make her drunk,(BC)
for she has defied(BD) the Lord.
Let Moab wallow in her vomit;(BE)
let her be an object of ridicule.(BF)
27 Was not Israel the object of your ridicule?(BG)
Was she caught among thieves,(BH)
that you shake your head(BI) in scorn(BJ)
whenever you speak of her?
28 Abandon your towns and dwell among the rocks,
you who live in Moab.
Be like a dove(BK) that makes its nest
at the mouth of a cave.(BL)

29 “We have heard of Moab’s pride(BM)
how great is her arrogance!—
of her insolence, her pride, her conceit
and the haughtiness(BN) of her heart.
30 I know her insolence but it is futile,”
declares the Lord,
“and her boasts(BO) accomplish nothing.
31 Therefore I wail(BP) over Moab,
for all Moab I cry out,
I moan for the people of Kir Hareseth.(BQ)
32 I weep for you, as Jazer(BR) weeps,
you vines of Sibmah.(BS)
Your branches spread as far as the sea[h];
they reached as far as[i] Jazer.
The destroyer has fallen
on your ripened fruit and grapes.
33 Joy and gladness are gone
from the orchards and fields of Moab.
I have stopped the flow of wine(BT) from the presses;
no one treads them with shouts of joy.(BU)
Although there are shouts,
they are not shouts of joy.

34 “The sound of their cry rises
from Heshbon(BV) to Elealeh(BW) and Jahaz,(BX)
from Zoar(BY) as far as Horonaim(BZ) and Eglath Shelishiyah,
for even the waters of Nimrim are dried up.(CA)
35 In Moab I will put an end
to those who make offerings on the high places(CB)
and burn incense(CC) to their gods,”
declares the Lord.
36 “So my heart laments(CD) for Moab like the music of a pipe;
it laments like a pipe for the people of Kir Hareseth.(CE)
The wealth they acquired(CF) is gone.
37 Every head is shaved(CG)
and every beard(CH) cut off;
every hand is slashed
and every waist is covered with sackcloth.(CI)
38 On all the roofs in Moab
and in the public squares(CJ)
there is nothing but mourning,
for I have broken Moab
like a jar(CK) that no one wants,”
declares the Lord.
39 “How shattered(CL) she is! How they wail!
How Moab turns her back in shame!
Moab has become an object of ridicule,(CM)
an object of horror to all those around her.”

40 This is what the Lord says:

“Look! An eagle is swooping(CN) down,
spreading its wings(CO) over Moab.
41 Kerioth[j](CP) will be captured
and the strongholds taken.
In that day the hearts of Moab’s warriors(CQ)
will be like the heart of a woman in labor.(CR)
42 Moab will be destroyed(CS) as a nation(CT)
because she defied(CU) the Lord.
43 Terror(CV) and pit and snare(CW) await you,
you people of Moab,”
declares the Lord.
44 “Whoever flees(CX) from the terror
will fall into a pit,
whoever climbs out of the pit
will be caught in a snare;
for I will bring on Moab
the year(CY) of her punishment,”
declares the Lord.

45 “In the shadow of Heshbon
the fugitives stand helpless,
for a fire has gone out from Heshbon,
a blaze from the midst of Sihon;(CZ)
it burns the foreheads of Moab,
the skulls(DA) of the noisy boasters.
46 Woe to you, Moab!(DB)
The people of Chemosh are destroyed;
your sons are taken into exile
and your daughters into captivity.

47 “Yet I will restore(DC) the fortunes of Moab
in days to come,”
declares the Lord.

Here ends the judgment on Moab.

A Message About Ammon

49 Concerning the Ammonites:(DD)

This is what the Lord says:

“Has Israel no sons?
Has Israel no heir?
Why then has Molek[k](DE) taken possession of Gad?(DF)
Why do his people live in its towns?
But the days are coming,”
declares the Lord,
“when I will sound the battle cry(DG)
against Rabbah(DH) of the Ammonites;
it will become a mound of ruins,(DI)
and its surrounding villages will be set on fire.
Then Israel will drive out
those who drove her out,(DJ)
says the Lord.
“Wail, Heshbon,(DK) for Ai(DL) is destroyed!
Cry out, you inhabitants of Rabbah!
Put on sackcloth(DM) and mourn;
rush here and there inside the walls,
for Molek(DN) will go into exile,(DO)
together with his priests and officials.
Why do you boast of your valleys,
boast of your valleys so fruitful?
Unfaithful Daughter Ammon,(DP)
you trust in your riches(DQ) and say,
‘Who will attack me?’(DR)
I will bring terror on you
from all those around you,”
declares the Lord, the Lord Almighty.
“Every one of you will be driven away,
and no one will gather the fugitives.(DS)

“Yet afterward, I will restore(DT) the fortunes of the Ammonites,”
declares the Lord.

A Message About Edom(DU)(DV)

Concerning Edom:(DW)

This is what the Lord Almighty says:

“Is there no longer wisdom in Teman?(DX)
Has counsel perished from the prudent?
Has their wisdom decayed?
Turn and flee, hide in deep caves,(DY)
you who live in Dedan,(DZ)
for I will bring disaster on Esau
at the time when I punish him.
If grape pickers came to you,
would they not leave a few grapes?
If thieves came during the night,
would they not steal only as much as they wanted?
10 But I will strip Esau bare;
I will uncover his hiding places,(EA)
so that he cannot conceal himself.
His armed men are destroyed,
also his allies and neighbors,
so there is no one(EB) to say,
11 ‘Leave your fatherless children;(EC) I will keep them alive.
Your widows(ED) too can depend on me.’”

12 This is what the Lord says: “If those who do not deserve to drink the cup(EE) must drink it, why should you go unpunished?(EF) You will not go unpunished, but must drink it. 13 I swear(EG) by myself,” declares the Lord, “that Bozrah(EH) will become a ruin and a curse,[l] an object of horror(EI) and reproach;(EJ) and all its towns will be in ruins forever.”(EK)

14 I have heard a message from the Lord;
an envoy was sent to the nations to say,
“Assemble yourselves to attack it!
Rise up for battle!”

15 “Now I will make you small among the nations,
despised by mankind.
16 The terror you inspire
and the pride(EL) of your heart have deceived you,
you who live in the clefts of the rocks,(EM)
who occupy the heights of the hill.
Though you build your nest(EN) as high as the eagle’s,
from there I will bring you down,”
declares the Lord.
17 “Edom will become an object of horror;(EO)
all who pass by will be appalled and will scoff
because of all its wounds.(EP)
18 As Sodom(EQ) and Gomorrah(ER) were overthrown,
along with their neighboring towns,”
says the Lord,
“so no one will live there;
no people will dwell(ES) in it.

19 “Like a lion(ET) coming up from Jordan’s thickets(EU)
to a rich pastureland,
I will chase Edom from its land in an instant.
Who is the chosen one I will appoint for this?
Who is like(EV) me and who can challenge me?(EW)
And what shepherd(EX) can stand against me?”

20 Therefore, hear what the Lord has planned against Edom,(EY)
what he has purposed(EZ) against those who live in Teman:(FA)
The young of the flock(FB) will be dragged away;
their pasture will be appalled at their fate.(FC)
21 At the sound of their fall the earth will tremble;(FD)
their cry(FE) will resound to the Red Sea.[m]
22 Look! An eagle will soar and swoop(FF) down,
spreading its wings over Bozrah.(FG)
In that day the hearts of Edom’s warriors(FH)
will be like the heart of a woman in labor.(FI)

2 Timothy 4

In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who will judge the living and the dead,(A) and in view of his appearing(B) and his kingdom, I give you this charge:(C) Preach(D) the word;(E) be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke(F) and encourage(G)—with great patience and careful instruction. For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine.(H) Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear.(I) They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths.(J) But you, keep your head in all situations, endure hardship,(K) do the work of an evangelist,(L) discharge all the duties of your ministry.

For I am already being poured out like a drink offering,(M) and the time for my departure is near.(N) I have fought the good fight,(O) I have finished the race,(P) I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me(Q) the crown of righteousness,(R) which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day(S)—and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.(T)

Personal Remarks

Do your best to come to me quickly,(U) 10 for Demas,(V) because he loved this world,(W) has deserted me and has gone to Thessalonica.(X) Crescens has gone to Galatia,(Y) and Titus(Z) to Dalmatia. 11 Only Luke(AA) is with me.(AB) Get Mark(AC) and bring him with you, because he is helpful to me in my ministry. 12 I sent Tychicus(AD) to Ephesus.(AE) 13 When you come, bring the cloak that I left with Carpus at Troas,(AF) and my scrolls, especially the parchments.

14 Alexander(AG) the metalworker did me a great deal of harm. The Lord will repay him for what he has done.(AH) 15 You too should be on your guard against him, because he strongly opposed our message.

16 At my first defense, no one came to my support, but everyone deserted me. May it not be held against them.(AI) 17 But the Lord stood at my side(AJ) and gave me strength,(AK) so that through me the message might be fully proclaimed and all the Gentiles might hear it.(AL) And I was delivered from the lion’s mouth.(AM) 18 The Lord will rescue me from every evil attack(AN) and will bring me safely to his heavenly kingdom.(AO) To him be glory for ever and ever. Amen.(AP)

Final Greetings

19 Greet Priscilla[a] and Aquila(AQ) and the household of Onesiphorus.(AR) 20 Erastus(AS) stayed in Corinth, and I left Trophimus(AT) sick in Miletus.(AU) 21 Do your best to get here before winter.(AV) Eubulus greets you, and so do Pudens, Linus, Claudia and all the brothers and sisters.[b]

22 The Lord be with your spirit.(AW) Grace be with you all.(AX)

Psalm 95-96

Psalm 95

Come,(A) let us sing for joy(B) to the Lord;
let us shout aloud(C) to the Rock(D) of our salvation.
Let us come before him(E) with thanksgiving(F)
and extol him with music(G) and song.

For the Lord is the great God,(H)
the great King(I) above all gods.(J)
In his hand are the depths of the earth,(K)
and the mountain peaks belong to him.
The sea is his, for he made it,
and his hands formed the dry land.(L)

Come, let us bow down(M) in worship,(N)
let us kneel(O) before the Lord our Maker;(P)
for he is our God
and we are the people of his pasture,(Q)
the flock under his care.

Today, if only you would hear his voice,
“Do not harden your hearts(R) as you did at Meribah,[a](S)
as you did that day at Massah[b] in the wilderness,(T)
where your ancestors tested(U) me;
they tried me, though they had seen what I did.
10 For forty years(V) I was angry with that generation;
I said, ‘They are a people whose hearts go astray,(W)
and they have not known my ways.’(X)
11 So I declared on oath(Y) in my anger,
‘They shall never enter my rest.’”(Z)

Psalm 96(AA)

Sing to the Lord(AB) a new song;(AC)
sing to the Lord, all the earth.
Sing to the Lord, praise his name;(AD)
proclaim his salvation(AE) day after day.
Declare his glory(AF) among the nations,
his marvelous deeds(AG) among all peoples.

For great is the Lord and most worthy of praise;(AH)
he is to be feared(AI) above all gods.(AJ)
For all the gods of the nations are idols,(AK)
but the Lord made the heavens.(AL)
Splendor and majesty(AM) are before him;
strength and glory(AN) are in his sanctuary.

Ascribe to the Lord,(AO) all you families of nations,(AP)
ascribe to the Lord glory and strength.
Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name;
bring an offering(AQ) and come into his courts.(AR)
Worship the Lord(AS) in the splendor of his[c] holiness;(AT)
tremble(AU) before him, all the earth.(AV)
10 Say among the nations, “The Lord reigns.(AW)
The world is firmly established,(AX) it cannot be moved;(AY)
he will judge(AZ) the peoples with equity.(BA)

11 Let the heavens rejoice,(BB) let the earth be glad;(BC)
let the sea resound, and all that is in it.
12 Let the fields be jubilant, and everything in them;
let all the trees of the forest(BD) sing for joy.(BE)
13 Let all creation rejoice before the Lord, for he comes,
he comes to judge(BF) the earth.
He will judge the world in righteousness(BG)
and the peoples in his faithfulness.(BH)

Jeremiah 44:24-47:7, 2 Timothy 2:22-3:17, Psalm 94:1-23, Proverbs 26:6-8

Today is the 24th day of October, welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I am Brian and it is wonderful, it’s exciting to be here with you today because, well, this is the day and we get 52 of these per year, but this is the day we begin a new week and so it’s out in front of us and together we open the threshold and step into it and remind ourselves, like we do probably 50 times a year, nothing’s happened yet. How we live this week is up to us. And all kinds of circumstances might come our way but the Scripture is coming our way as well and we have a seat around the Global Campfire to center ourselves in God’s word and in His leadership in our lives. And so, let’s, let’s live this life to the fullest. Let’s live this week to the fullest. Let’s be in a better place, one week from today than we are today. We simply have to head in that direction intentionally and part of that intentionality is certainly showing up around the Global Campfire every day for the next step forward together. And that next step forward will take us back into the book of Jeremiah which we will finish before this week is out as well as leading us into the letter, II Timothy which we will finish before this week is out. We’ll read from the New International Version this week. Jeremiah chapter 44 verse 24 through 47 verse 7.

Prayer:

Father, we thank You for this new week. We thank You that the days are out in front of us. We thank You that You’ve given us the opportunity to make choices and that those choices they, they get to matter. And so, when we make wise choices, they matter, and when we make foolish choices, they matter. And You have given us the Council of the Scripture and the power of Your Holy Spirit to help us make wise decisions and so often we’re not paying attention to either. But we’re paying attention now. And so, Holy Spirit, we invite You into this week and all the decisions we will need to make and to all the conversations that we will have and to all of the things that will go on inside of us. The inner monologue that is constantly going on that leads us into all kinds of things all kinds of bitterness and judgmentalism and all kinds of things. We’re inviting You into all of it. The motives of our heart, the actions of our lives, our thoughts, words and deeds. We ask for Your help as we navigate the days ahead. And we ask in Jesus name. Amen.

Prayer and Encouragements:

Hi DABers. My name is Jen, I’m a long-time listener. I’ve called in a few times to lift you up in prayer, this is my first time calling to request prayer. I’m calling to ask if you would please lift up my husband Jeff in your prayer. He went through a hard time back in November. He had a lot of anxiety and depression that he battled with. He ended up going out of work in April and he’s just starting to go back to work now. But I feel like he’s starting to spiral down again and he’s just lost. He’s kind of walked away from his faith. He doesn’t know what he believes. It’s just hard, it’s hard to watch. And my daughter’s watching too and it’s just hard. She’s walked away from her faith also. They don’t really attend church with me anymore. So, I just ask that you would just lift him up, Jeff and my daughter Liz. I just, I thank you for listening. I know that there’s power in numbers. And I’m a prayer warrior myself. So, I battle on my knees everyday for the both of them and all of you as well. I thank you all for your prayers.

Good morning everybody this is Barb calling from Canada. I had something happen to me yesterday that I just wanted to share with everybody. Because it was really encouraging to me and I hope it is to you too. I have been going through a pretty stressful time probably at the highest stress levels of my entire life and that’s quite a few years. Anyway, I live in an area in a town now that is one of the highest crime rates in all of Canada. And to leave your car door unlocked is really silly because you know for sure that your car will have gone, been gone through and it happened to me probably three different times. So, I say that to say this during this stressful time yesterday I was getting ready for work and again it was just a stressful start to the morning and then I couldn’t find my car keys. Well, I can always find my car keys because I always put them right where I leave them at the front door. But they weren’t there. And so, I searched the entire house, couldn’t find them and realized I must have left them in my car. So, I went outside, my doors were unlocked so I opened my door expecting to see chaos. I didn’t see chaos but I did see my keys. And, I realized that you know, God is looking after me even when I don’t ask. So, imagine what He does when we do ask. And, I just thought that’s just such a mighty God that we serve. And I love Him so much. Just wanted to share that with ya’ll.

Hi DAB family, this goes out to Mike in New York City, this is Michelle, God’s Life Speaker. You are on a set filming and you have been witnessing to another gentleman that is hostile towards God and you felt the insult, you felt it, yes you did but praise God that you stood firm because you know who’s you are and who you are and I yes, I stand with you that God will use you as His vessel, you are a witness an ambassador. You are the aroma of Christ in a world that is lost and your opportunity exists in the name of Jesus, we are declaring into what is not a yet, we are just can speak that this man well just know Christ and that you are just privileged. I often just pray, Lord let me just be there when somebody accepts Christ as their Savior. So, Mike I pray that for you, I pray that God allow you to see the transformation, allow you just to have your hand working for His kingdom and just to bring glory to God. But your example, how you look, how you act, even nonverbally, what you say, how you consistently show His truth in the way you just do life is going to speak volumes. You know the old saying that your actions speak louder than your words and I, I believe this is true in the kingdom. So may you be blessed, may you have favor. May there be prosperity in you as you continue to witness and may we hear back of the transformation of this man in Jesus name.

This is Chris from York, Pennsylvania. Listening to the October 20th DAB and the prayers. And what a way to end the prayers today. Our sister who moved across the country calling in and just giving us a little bit of an update. Thank you so much for that. I’m so sorry that you went through that situation with your old church and so thankful that you heard your fellow DAB brothers and sisters praying for you and that that was an encouragement. We’ll just continue to pray for you that you would be encouraged and know that God is there that Jesus and the Holy Spirit are in your life, and that there’s a solid rock you can stand on. But my prayers today is for those of us who have been in that situation where we didn’t respond with the love of Christ, so let me pray for that. Lord, God, we just know that we have failed so many times to hear your prompting, to follow the way we should be with others who have shared hardships that they’re going through. And when your Holy Spirit is prompted us to reach out to somebody even if we don’t know what they’re going through. Lord we have failed so many times to do that. Forgive us for not wanting to leave the clean sidewalk and get down into the gutter where some of our brothers and sisters find themselves sometimes and just need the encouragement of someone close to them to help get them out of that situation. Lord, please forgive us for not following.

Good morning DAB community. This is Blessings Flow in Pennsylvania. I wanted to leave a prayer for our beloved and dear sister Victorious Soldier. Victorious Soldier, you’ve been on my heart and mind and ever since you left your message about your brother. Guess it’s been a few weeks now, but I just wanted to leave you a prayer. I’ve been praying on my own, but I wanted you to hear my voice. If you hear it. Lord, we thank You God and we bring to You Victorious Soldier, God, before Your throne of grace. Lord, we don’t come in our own strength, we come weak, we come as we are. We thank You for Your strength being made perfect in us. Lord, we lift up my sister God, asking that You will comfort her. Thank You Lord, for the blessedness of those who mourn for they will be comforted. God, thank You that You’re near the brokenhearted, to bind up all their wounds. God, we thank You that you’ve identified Yourself to be the God of all comfort. We thank You for comforting her heart and her loss. Lord, and all those who are grieving at this time, loss of loved ones, loss of mentors, loss of friends and pastors God, comfort us O Lord. Remember, your daughter, surround her with Your light, surround her with Your peace. Let her know that she will make it, God. Thank You for the gift of relationships Lord that surpasses anything that money could buy, we bless You, we love You and we thank You for Victorious Soldier, the life of her brother in Jesus name, amen. God bless you sister. We love and appreciate you so much and we’re standing with you.

Hi DAB family, my name is Yosinia, I’m from Burbank, California and I’m calling to request prayer for my dad. My dad and I have always had a strained relationship. He was very physically and verbally abusive toward me when I was growing up. And so, I ran away when I was 13 years old and I’m now 47. Anyways, my dad who’s 72 years old now had a stroke and they think he might have cancer and I’m not going to lie I didn’t feel anything when the doctor told me this, but I prayed upon it and I asked God to please soften my heart so that I can be there for him. And wow, God really answered my prayer. I feel like I love my dad and I forgive him and it hurts me to see him the way he is now, like a little child who needs help to be fed. And, so just pray for him that God gives him healing. Thank you, thank you.

The Daily Audio Bible Reading for Sunday October 24, 2021 (NIV)

Jeremiah 44:24-47:7

24 Then Jeremiah said to all the people, including the women,(A) “Hear the word of the Lord, all you people of Judah in Egypt.(B) 25 This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: You and your wives(C) have done what you said you would do when you promised, ‘We will certainly carry out the vows we made to burn incense and pour out drink offerings to the Queen of Heaven.’(D)

“Go ahead then, do what you promised! Keep your vows!(E) 26 But hear the word of the Lord, all you Jews living in Egypt:(F) ‘I swear(G) by my great name,’ says the Lord, ‘that no one from Judah living anywhere in Egypt will ever again invoke my name or swear, “As surely as the Sovereign(H) Lord lives.”(I) 27 For I am watching(J) over them for harm,(K) not for good; the Jews in Egypt will perish(L) by sword and famine(M) until they are all destroyed.(N) 28 Those who escape the sword(O) and return to the land of Judah from Egypt will be very few.(P) Then the whole remnant(Q) of Judah who came to live in Egypt will know whose word will stand(R)—mine or theirs.(S)

29 “‘This will be the sign(T) to you that I will punish(U) you in this place,’ declares the Lord, ‘so that you will know that my threats of harm against you will surely stand.’(V) 30 This is what the Lord says: ‘I am going to deliver Pharaoh(W) Hophra king of Egypt into the hands of his enemies who want to kill him, just as I gave Zedekiah(X) king of Judah into the hands of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, the enemy who wanted to kill him.’”(Y)

A Message to Baruch

45 When Baruch(Z) son of Neriah(AA) wrote on a scroll(AB) the words Jeremiah the prophet dictated in the fourth year of Jehoiakim(AC) son of Josiah king of Judah, Jeremiah said this to Baruch: “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says to you, Baruch: You said, ‘Woe(AD) to me! The Lord has added sorrow(AE) to my pain;(AF) I am worn out with groaning(AG) and find no rest.’(AH) But the Lord has told me to say to you, ‘This is what the Lord says: I will overthrow what I have built and uproot(AI) what I have planted,(AJ) throughout the earth.(AK) Should you then seek great(AL) things for yourself? Do not seek them.(AM) For I will bring disaster(AN) on all people,(AO) declares the Lord, but wherever you go I will let you escape(AP) with your life.’”(AQ)

A Message About Egypt

46 This is the word of the Lord that came to Jeremiah the prophet concerning the nations:(AR)

Concerning Egypt:(AS)

This is the message against the army of Pharaoh Necho(AT) king of Egypt, which was defeated at Carchemish(AU) on the Euphrates(AV) River by Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon in the fourth year of Jehoiakim(AW) son of Josiah king of Judah:

“Prepare your shields,(AX) both large and small,
and march out for battle!
Harness the horses,
mount the steeds!
Take your positions
with helmets on!
Polish(AY) your spears,
put on your armor!(AZ)
What do I see?
They are terrified,
they are retreating,
their warriors are defeated.
They flee(BA) in haste
without looking back,
and there is terror(BB) on every side,”
declares the Lord.
“The swift cannot flee(BC)
nor the strong escape.
In the north by the River Euphrates(BD)
they stumble and fall.(BE)

“Who is this that rises like the Nile,
like rivers of surging waters?(BF)
Egypt rises like the Nile,(BG)
like rivers of surging waters.
She says, ‘I will rise and cover the earth;
I will destroy cities and their people.’(BH)
Charge, you horses!
Drive furiously, you charioteers!(BI)
March on, you warriors—men of Cush[a](BJ) and Put who carry shields,
men of Lydia(BK) who draw the bow.
10 But that day(BL) belongs to the Lord, the Lord Almighty—
a day of vengeance(BM), for vengeance on his foes.
The sword will devour(BN) till it is satisfied,
till it has quenched its thirst with blood.(BO)
For the Lord, the Lord Almighty, will offer sacrifice(BP)
in the land of the north by the River Euphrates.(BQ)

11 “Go up to Gilead and get balm,(BR)
Virgin(BS) Daughter Egypt.
But you try many medicines in vain;
there is no healing(BT) for you.
12 The nations will hear of your shame;
your cries will fill the earth.
One warrior will stumble over another;
both will fall(BU) down together.”

13 This is the message the Lord spoke to Jeremiah the prophet about the coming of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon(BV) to attack Egypt:(BW)

14 “Announce this in Egypt, and proclaim it in Migdol;
proclaim it also in Memphis(BX) and Tahpanhes:(BY)
‘Take your positions and get ready,
for the sword devours(BZ) those around you.’
15 Why will your warriors be laid low?
They cannot stand, for the Lord will push them down.(CA)
16 They will stumble(CB) repeatedly;
they will fall(CC) over each other.
They will say, ‘Get up, let us go back
to our own people(CD) and our native lands,
away from the sword of the oppressor.’(CE)
17 There they will exclaim,
‘Pharaoh king of Egypt is only a loud noise;(CF)
he has missed his opportunity.(CG)

18 “As surely as I live,” declares the King,(CH)
whose name is the Lord Almighty,
“one will come who is like Tabor(CI) among the mountains,
like Carmel(CJ) by the sea.
19 Pack your belongings for exile,(CK)
you who live in Egypt,
for Memphis(CL) will be laid waste(CM)
and lie in ruins without inhabitant.

20 “Egypt is a beautiful heifer,
but a gadfly is coming
against her from the north.(CN)
21 The mercenaries(CO) in her ranks
are like fattened calves.(CP)
They too will turn and flee(CQ) together,
they will not stand their ground,
for the day(CR) of disaster is coming upon them,
the time(CS) for them to be punished.
22 Egypt will hiss like a fleeing serpent
as the enemy advances in force;
they will come against her with axes,
like men who cut down trees.(CT)
23 They will chop down her forest,”
declares the Lord,
“dense though it be.
They are more numerous than locusts,(CU)
they cannot be counted.
24 Daughter Egypt will be put to shame,
given into the hands of the people of the north.(CV)

25 The Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: “I am about to bring punishment on Amon god of Thebes,(CW) on Pharaoh,(CX) on Egypt and her gods(CY) and her kings, and on those who rely(CZ) on Pharaoh. 26 I will give them into the hands(DA) of those who want to kill them—Nebuchadnezzar king(DB) of Babylon and his officers. Later, however, Egypt will be inhabited(DC) as in times past,” declares the Lord.

27 “Do not be afraid,(DD) Jacob(DE) my servant;(DF)
do not be dismayed, Israel.
I will surely save you out of a distant place,
your descendants from the land of their exile.(DG)
Jacob will again have peace and security,
and no one will make him afraid.
28 Do not be afraid, Jacob my servant,
for I am with you,”(DH) declares the Lord.
“Though I completely destroy(DI) all the nations
among which I scatter you,
I will not completely destroy you.
I will discipline you but only in due measure;
I will not let you go entirely unpunished.”

A Message About the Philistines

47 This is the word of the Lord that came to Jeremiah the prophet concerning the Philistines(DJ) before Pharaoh attacked Gaza:(DK)

This is what the Lord says:

“See how the waters are rising in the north;(DL)
they will become an overflowing torrent.
They will overflow the land and everything in it,
the towns and those who live in them.
The people will cry out;
all who dwell in the land will wail(DM)
at the sound of the hooves of galloping steeds,
at the noise of enemy chariots(DN)
and the rumble of their wheels.
Parents will not turn to help their children;
their hands will hang limp.(DO)
For the day has come
to destroy all the Philistines
and to remove all survivors
who could help Tyre(DP) and Sidon.(DQ)
The Lord is about to destroy the Philistines,(DR)
the remnant from the coasts of Caphtor.[b](DS)
Gaza will shave(DT) her head in mourning;
Ashkelon(DU) will be silenced.
You remnant on the plain,
how long will you cut(DV) yourselves?

“‘Alas, sword(DW) of the Lord,
how long till you rest?
Return to your sheath;
cease and be still.’(DX)
But how can it rest
when the Lord has commanded it,
when he has ordered it
to attack Ashkelon and the coast?”(DY)

2 Timothy 2:22-3:17

22 Flee the evil desires of youth and pursue righteousness, faith, love(A) and peace, along with those who call on the Lord(B) out of a pure heart.(C) 23 Don’t have anything to do with foolish and stupid arguments, because you know they produce quarrels.(D) 24 And the Lord’s servant must not be quarrelsome but must be kind to everyone, able to teach, not resentful.(E) 25 Opponents must be gently instructed, in the hope that God will grant them repentance leading them to a knowledge of the truth,(F) 26 and that they will come to their senses and escape from the trap of the devil,(G) who has taken them captive to do his will.

But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days.(H) People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money,(I) boastful, proud,(J) abusive,(K) disobedient to their parents,(L) ungrateful, unholy, without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, treacherous,(M) rash, conceited,(N) lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God— having a form of godliness(O) but denying its power. Have nothing to do with such people.(P)

They are the kind who worm their way(Q) into homes and gain control over gullible women, who are loaded down with sins and are swayed by all kinds of evil desires, always learning but never able to come to a knowledge of the truth.(R) Just as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses,(S) so also these teachers oppose(T) the truth. They are men of depraved minds,(U) who, as far as the faith is concerned, are rejected. But they will not get very far because, as in the case of those men,(V) their folly will be clear to everyone.

A Final Charge to Timothy

10 You, however, know all about my teaching,(W) my way of life, my purpose, faith, patience, love, endurance, 11 persecutions, sufferings—what kinds of things happened to me in Antioch,(X) Iconium(Y) and Lystra,(Z) the persecutions I endured.(AA) Yet the Lord rescued(AB) me from all of them.(AC) 12 In fact, everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted,(AD) 13 while evildoers and impostors will go from bad to worse,(AE) deceiving and being deceived.(AF) 14 But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it,(AG) 15 and how from infancy(AH) you have known the Holy Scriptures,(AI) which are able to make you wise(AJ) for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. 16 All Scripture is God-breathed(AK) and is useful for teaching,(AL) rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness,(AM) 17 so that the servant of God[a](AN) may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.(AO)

Jeremiah 42:1-44:23, 2 Timothy 2:1-21, Psalms 92:1-93:5, Proverbs 26:3-5

Today is the 23rd day of October welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I am Brian it is fantastic to be here with you today as we round the corner on another one of our weeks together. As we continue to move through the Old Testament, we’re working our way through the book of Jeremiah, and we have…well…we’ll finish Jeremiah in about a week. We are also working our way through second Timothy which we’ll spend the next several days working through. So, let’s dive in. Jeremiah chapter 42 verse 1 through 44 verse 23.

Prayer:

Father, we thank You for Your word. We thank You for another week to spend interacting with the Scriptures, to be in…in Your word, to be together day by day step-by-step. We thank You for all of these steps that we’ve taken. And as we continue to step forward, we ask Holy Spirit that You continue to lead us into all truth, that we might receive from You and from the Scriptures what we need for our lives, that the fruit of the spirit might be planted in the soil of our hearts. Make us fruitful God. Help us to keep the soil of our hearts fertile and cared for, that we might continually yield a bountiful harvest for Your kingdom. We pray this in the name of Jesus. Amen.

Announcements:

dailyaudiobible.com is home base, it’s the website for all things Daily Audio Bible. If you’re using the Daily Audio Bible app you can access all these things with the Drawer icon in the upper left-hand corner.

So, yeah, check out the Daily Audio Bible Shop. There are a number of resources there. Whether it’s something where or whether it’s the Daily Audio Bible journal and everything to write with, same…same things that I’m journaling with, same resources that I’m using. Or maybe it’s written resources. There are a number of books to take this journey deeper like a Reframe, “From the God we’ve made to God with us”, which is a deep dive into what it even means to be in a relationship with God and what that looks like, how it takes shape in our lives and the ways that we’ve misunderstood that over…well…maybe over our whole life. This is…this is a great resource for taking a look at that. Or Sneezing Jesus, which is a really deep dive into the humanity of Jesus, the things that compel us, the things that teach us how to live this human life and what it should look like, what it might look like to be Christ like. Or the God of Your Story, which is 365 day dated walk through the Bible, just like what we’re doing here the Daily Audio Bible. It's…well…at that point it was 13 years of looking through, back through everything we’ve talked about over all of the years as we’ve gone through the Bible and just kind of mining the gold and then writing it down in written form, which totally changes the complexion of things that were spoken aloud. And once they’re written down it’s not like you just kind of copied and pasted word for word the things that were said. That never reads well. But to have something that reads well and no matter whether you’re connected on the Internet or away from the Internet this rhythm can continue. And that can be found in the God of Your Story. Or our coffee and tea. We could go on and on. You can have fresh Windfarm coffee roasted at altitude in the mountains of Colorado and then shipped to your door for fresh, much more fresh than anything you can like buy at the grocery store or whatever. It’s a lot of resources that are all there, centered around this journey that we are on together. So, check out the daily audio Bible Shop.

If you want to partner with the Daily Audio Bible you can do that at dailyaudiobible.com as well. There is a link on the homepage. If you’re using the app, you can press the Give button in the upper right-hand corner, or the mailing address is PO Box 1996 Spring Hill Tennessee 37174.

And, as always, if you have a prayer request or encouragement, you can hit the Hotline button in the app or you can dial 877-942-4253.

And that’s it for today. I’m Brian I love you and I’ll be waiting for you here tomorrow.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Hello loyal listeners this is Royal in the city of trees. Today is October 18th and the reason I’m specifically calling in today, this message is for as a follow up for Vicki in Northern California. Your prayer request that aired on September 17th you shared that you lost your precious son Shane on August 18th which means it’s been two months today since you had to say goodbye to him. And I just want to let you know in the days following when your call aired last month I had 5 customers throughout that week, this never happens, I had five customers by the name of Shane. So, every time I would see his name, I would think of you and pray for you again. And I also have a brother-in-law named Shane and we call him gentle giant because he is 6 feet 4 inches tall. So, I just wanted to let you know Vicki…yeah…just…it’s just really stuck out to me, just your voice and your heart and just lifting you up again today. I know…just…monthly and daily anniversaries can be super hard. So, I pray…continue to pray that God will comfort you and continue to bring the best memories and moments of the light of joy you had with your son. And I just pray for His covering over you and like you said for all the nurses. Amen.

Resilient Rachel, Redeemed Rachel, I just heard the most precious prayer for you and encouragement, and I wanted to add my log onto the fire. I am lifting you up to our Lord, the most-high God. Dear God, we bring our sister to you, and we pray that You will continue to redeem her, continue to move in her family, in her life. Reveal Yourself to her Lord. Show her Your way. Show her where You are in her situations and her struggles Lord. Bring her through it and just enable her Lord to do Your work and to be firm and bold in her identity in You. And I pray that You will bless her family and her circumstances in Jesus’ name. Amen. This is your sister Radiant Rachel. Have a blessed…

Greetings to you my DAB family this is Walking in the Light in Tennessee still walking in the light in Tennessee. Going through some dark places. Of course, we all are but we can thank God for the light and we thank him for just being…being that light in everything that we do and everything that we say and for the DAB family our priceless priceless. I want to lift up…well…I want to encourage those of you who like myself have family members who are alcoholics, are drug addicted. And I say family members but I’m thinking particularly of one of my sons who this season has been a real real challenge. I don't…I don’t know why it has to be, but it is. And, so, I listen to so many calls of you who have problems with brothers and family members who are alcoholics. And, so, I just want to pray for the alcoholics, and I would I pray for those of us who are dealing with that problem. Father God in the precious name of Jesus we come collectively together Lord to lift up our loved ones who are bound by this addiction. Lord, we just ask You to intercede on their behalf. We ask You O Lord to give us the heart and the wisdom to deal with this. And Lord, we ask You that You will send Your angels to rescue…there’s a song we used to sing in the church called rescue the perishing. And, so, Father so many are perishing around us, but our hearts are always in belief that You are able Lord to change and to deliver. So, we trust You O Lord to do what only You can do. And I ask You all to continue to pray for one another, to love one another, to be kind to one another and encourage one another in Jesus’ name. Love you, Brian. Love you, DAB family. God is so good and together we stand. Amen.

Hey DAB family this is WC from Arizona. I have demons and temptations in my life that I ask all of you to pray for me to help me eliminate from my life. I have hurt people close to me and I need to gain their trust back ‘cause I love them so much. I ask God to accept me. It’s been close to 30 years since I accepted…accepted Him as my Father and the Holy Spirit and I’m looking to have Him back in my life. I’m asking for prayers that I can accept God back in my life. It’s been over a week now that I’ve been listening to this app, and it’s been very refreshing and it’s opening my mind and almost my life to new thought process and to new beginnings. So, please I ask for your prayers that God can help me, that the ones in my life that I’ve hurt, that He can help them to forgive me and to make me a better person and husband. Lord I pray to you. Amen.

Good morning DAB family this is Margaret. I’ll go by Immaculate Margaret. That’s my name on Instagram. But I’m calling…I’m out here in Louisiana in the South. I’m normally in New Orleans. Right now, I’m in Gray right outside of Homer. Anyway, first of all I just want to thank all of you who call in, listen, write down on the Prayer Wall whatever you do, all your contributions to us daily is…we’re blessed, I’m blessed, I’m grateful. Thank you. This is my first time calling in…well…not actually. I called in before and I called this for my same favorite person, my grandmother. First, she had COVID. Now she has in the hospital with pneumonia, and I am praying that she fights like she always do. She’s a trooper and I mean that’s all…pretty much all I want to say about that. But I’m just praying that we all have a blessed day and that…I don’t know…this is why I never call in, 'cause I never know what to say but I’m gonna try to call in more. So, you guys have a blessed day. Thank you.

Hey DAB family this is Veronica calling in from Oklahoma City. I’ve called in before about my younger 20-year-old brother. He and his twin brother and their younger sister, they’re all three adopted and have a kidney…a genetic kidney disease called Alport’s and both boys are on dialysis. One twin is already on the kidney transplant list but my other brother who has had significantly more issues has his meeting today with the doctors for them to make a decision on whether or not they will accept him to the transplant list. He has had a lot of seizures, a lot of heart problems which complicate things and make him less likely to be accepted to the transplant list. So, please just pray for a favorable outcome. He is 20. He is a child. So, yeah please just pray that the doctors will accept him to the transplant list. It’s very…there’s a lot of decisions that they have to make and they’re not easy decisions. And I understand why they have to make these difficult decisions because a lot of people need organs. So, anyways please pray for him his name is Trent. Thank you.

Jeremiah 42:1-44:23

Warning against Going to Egypt

42 Then all the commanders of the forces, and Johanan the son of Kareah and Jezaniah (Azariah) the son of Hoshaiah, and all the people from the least to the greatest approached and said to Jeremiah the prophet, “Please let our petition be presented before you, and pray to the Lord your God for us, that is, for all this remnant [of the people of Judah]; for we were once many, but now [only] a few of us are left, as you see with your own eyes, [so please pray] that the Lord your God may show us the way in which we should walk and the thing that we should do.” Then Jeremiah the prophet said to them, “I have heard you. Now hear me, I will pray to the Lord your God in accordance with your words; and I will declare to you whatever message the Lord answers; I will keep nothing back from you.” Then they said to Jeremiah, “May the Lord be a true and faithful witness against us if we fail to act in accordance with all the things that the Lord your God sends you to tell us. Whether it is pleasant or unpleasant, we will listen to and honor the voice of the Lord our God to whom we are sending you, so that it may go well with us when we listen to the voice of the Lord our God.”

Now after ten days [of prayer] had passed the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah. Then he called for Johanan the son of Kareah and all the commanders of the forces that were with him and all the people from the least to the greatest, and said to them, “Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, to whom you sent me to present your petition before Him: 10 ‘If you will indeed remain in this land, then I will build you up and not tear you down, and I will plant you and not uproot you; for I will relent and be satisfied concerning the disaster that I have inflicted on you [as discipline, and I will replace judgment with compassion].(A) 11 Do not be afraid of the king of Babylon, whom you now fear [as if he were deity]; do not be afraid of him,’ says the Lord, ‘for [he is a mere man, but I am the living, omniscient God and] I am with you [always] to protect you and to deliver you from his hand. 12 And I will show you compassion, so that he will have compassion on you and restore you to your own land. 13 But if you are going to say, “We will not stay in this land,” and [in so doing] do not listen to the voice of the Lord your God, 14 saying, “No, but we will go to the land of Egypt, where we will not see war or hear the sound of the [warrior’s] trumpet or hunger for bread, and we will stay there,” 15 then in that case listen to the word of the Lord, O remnant of Judah. Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, “If you are really determined to go to Egypt and to reside there [temporarily], 16 then the sword, of which you are afraid, will overtake you there in the land of Egypt; and the famine of which you are afraid will follow closely after you in Egypt, and you will die there. 17 So all the men who set their mind to go to Egypt to reside there [temporarily] will die by the sword, by famine and by virulent disease; none of them will remain or survive the disaster that I am going to bring on them.”’”

18 For thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, “As My anger and My wrath have been poured out on the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so My wrath will be poured out on you when you enter Egypt. You will become detested, an object of horror, a curse and a people scorned; and you will no longer see this place.” 19 The Lord has spoken to you, O remnant of Judah, “Do not go into Egypt!” Know with certainty that I [Jeremiah] have warned you and testified to you this day 20 that you have deceived yourselves; for you sent me to the Lord your God, saying, “Pray for us to the Lord our God; and whatever the Lord our God says, declare it to us and we will do it.” 21 And so I have told you today, but you have not listened to the voice of the Lord your God, in anything that He has sent me to tell you. 22 Now therefore know for certain that you will die by the sword, by famine, and by virulent disease in the land [of Egypt] where you wish to reside [temporarily].

In Egypt Jeremiah Warns of Judgment

43 Now it happened when Jeremiah, whom the Lord their God had sent, had finished telling all the people all the words of the Lord their God—that is, all these words— Azariah the son of Hoshaiah and Johanan the son of Kareah and all the proud and insolent men said to Jeremiah, “You are not telling the truth! The Lord our God has not sent you to say, ‘Do not go into Egypt to live there.’ But Baruch the son of Neriah is inciting you against us to hand us over to the Chaldeans, so they may [either] put us to death or exile us to Babylon.” So Johanan the son of Kareah and all the commanders of the forces and all the people disobeyed the voice of the Lord [which told them] to stay in the land of Judah. But Johanan the son of Kareah and all the commanders of the forces took all the remnant of Judah who had returned to live in the land of Judah from all the nations to which they had been driven— the men, women, and children, the king’s daughters (ladies of the court), and every person whom Nebuzaradan the captain of the bodyguard had left with Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan; he also took Jeremiah the prophet and Baruch the son of Neriah. So they entered the land of Egypt (for they did not obey the voice of the Lord) and they went in as far as [a]Tahpanhes.

Then came the word of the Lord to Jeremiah in Tahpanhes, saying, “Take some large stones in your hands and hide them in the mortar in the brickwork [of the terrace] which is at the entrance of Pharaoh’s [b]house in Tahpanhes, in the sight of some of the men of Judah; 10 and say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, “Behold, I am going to send and get [c]Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, My servant, and I am going to set his throne over these stones that I have hidden; and his [majestic, royal] canopy will be spread over them.(B) 11 He will also come and [d]strike the land of Egypt, giving those who are [destined] for death, to death, and those who are [destined] for captivity, to captivity, and those who are [destined] for the sword, to the sword. 12 And [through him] I will set fire to the temples of the gods of Egypt, and he will burn them and take them (Egyptian idols) captive. He will wrap himself with the land of Egypt as a shepherd wraps himself with his garment, and he will go away from there safely. 13 Nebuchadnezzar will also break the images and shatter the obelisks of [e]Heliopolis in the land of Egypt; and he will burn down the temples of the gods of Egypt.”’”

Conquest of Egypt Predicted

44 The word that came to Jeremiah concerning all the Jews who were living in the land of Egypt—at Migdol, at Tahpanhes, at Memphis, and in the land of Pathros, saying, “Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, ‘You have seen all the disaster that I have brought on Jerusalem and on all the cities of Judah; and see, this day they are desolated and no one lives in them because of the wickedness which they committed, provoking Me to anger by continuing to burn sacrifices and incense to serve other gods that they had not known, neither they, nor you, nor your fathers. Yet I sent to you all My servants the prophets, again and again, saying, “Oh, do not do this shamefully vile thing which I hate.” But they did not listen or turn [obediently] from their wickedness, and stop burning sacrifices and incense to other gods. Therefore My wrath and My anger were poured out and burned in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem; so they have become a ruin and a desolation, as it is this day. Therefore now thus says the Lord God of hosts, the God of Israel, “Why did you commit this great evil against yourselves [bringing disaster] that will cut off from you man and woman, child and infant, out of Judah, leaving yourselves without a remnant? Why do you [deliberately] provoke Me to anger with the works (idols) of your hands, burning sacrifices and incense to [make-believe] gods in the land of Egypt, where you [of your own accord] have come to live [as temporary residents], that you might be cut off and become a curse and a disgrace [an object of taunts] among all the nations of the earth? Have you forgotten the wickedness of your fathers, the wickedness of the kings of Judah, the wickedness of their wives [who served their foreign gods], your own wickedness, and the wickedness of your wives [who imitated the sin of the queens], which they committed in the land of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem? 10 They have not become apologetic [for their guilt and sin] even to this day; they have not feared [Me with reverence] nor walked in My law or My statutes, which I have set before you and before your fathers.”’(C)

11 “Therefore thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, ‘Behold, I am going to set My face against you for woe—even to cut off (destroy) all Judah [from the land]. 12 And I will take the remnant of Judah who have decided to go into the land of Egypt to live there [instead of surrendering to the Chaldeans as directed], and they will all fall and die in the land of Egypt; they will fall by the sword or perish by famine. From the least to the greatest, they will die by the sword or by famine; and they will become detestable, an object of horror, a curse, and a disgrace. 13 For I will punish all the inhabitants of the land of Egypt, as I have punished Jerusalem, with the sword, with famine, and with virulent disease; 14 so none of the survivors from the remnant of Judah who have entered the land of Egypt to live there will survive, even though they lift up their souls in longing to return to the land of Judah, [the place] to which they long to return to live; none will return except a few refugees.’”

15 Then all the men who knew that their wives were burning [f]sacrifices to other gods, and all the women who were standing by, a large group, including all the people who were living in Pathros in the land of Egypt, answered Jeremiah, saying, 16 “As for the word (message) that you have spoken to us in the name of the Lord, we are not going to listen to you. 17 But rather we will certainly perform every word of the vows we have made: to burn sacrifices to the [g]queen of heaven (Ishtar) and to pour out drink offerings to her, just as we ourselves and our forefathers, our kings and our princes did in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem; for [then] we had plenty of food and were prosperous and saw no misfortune. 18 But since we stopped burning sacrifices to the queen of heaven and pouring out drink offerings to her, we have lacked everything and have been consumed by the sword and by famine.” 19 And said the wives, “When we were burning sacrifices to the queen of heaven and were pouring out drink offerings to her, was it without [the knowledge and approval of] our husbands that we made cakes [in the shape of a star] to represent her and pour out drink offerings to her?”

Tragedy for the Jews

20 Then Jeremiah said to all the people, to the men and to the women and to all the people who had given him that answer, 21 “The smoking sacrifices (incense) that you burned in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem—you and your forefathers, your kings and your princes, and the people of the land—did not the Lord remember [in detail your idolatry] and did it not all come into His mind? 22 The Lord could no longer endure it, because of the evil of your acts and the repulsive acts which you have committed; because of them your land has become a ruin, an object of horror and a curse, without inhabitant, as it is this day. 23 Because you have burned sacrifices [to idols] and because you have sinned against the Lord and have not obeyed the voice of the Lord or walked in His law and in His statutes and in His testimonies, therefore this tragedy has fallen on you, as it has this day.”

2 Timothy 2:1-21

Be Strong

So you, my son, be strong [constantly strengthened] and empowered in the grace that is [to be found only] in Christ Jesus. The things [the doctrine, the precepts, the admonitions, the sum of my ministry] which you have heard me teach [a]in the presence of many witnesses, entrust [as a treasure] to reliable and faithful men who will also be capable and qualified to teach others. Take with me your share of hardship [passing through the difficulties which you are called to endure], like a good soldier of Christ Jesus. No soldier in active service gets entangled in the [ordinary business] affairs of civilian life; [he avoids them] so that he may please the one who enlisted him to serve. And if anyone competes as an athlete [in competitive games], he is not crowned [with the wreath of victory] unless he competes according to the rules. The hard-working farmer [who labors to produce crops] ought to be the first to receive his share of the crops. Think over the things I am saying [grasp their application], for the Lord will grant you insight and understanding in everything.

Remember Jesus Christ [the ever-living Lord who has] risen from the dead, [as the prophesied King] descended from David [king of Israel], according to my gospel [the good news that I preach],(A) for that [gospel] I am suffering even to [the point of] wearing chains like a criminal; but the word of God is not chained or imprisoned! 10 For this reason I [am ready to] patiently endure all things for the sake of those who are the elect (God’s chosen ones), so that they too may obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus and with it the reward of eternal glory. 11 This is a faithful and trustworthy saying:

If we died with Him, we will also live with Him;
12
If we endure, we will also reign with Him;
If we deny Him, He will also deny us;
13
If we are faithless, He remains faithful [true to His word and His righteous character], for He cannot deny Himself.

An Unashamed Workman

14 Remind the people of these facts, and solemnly charge them in the presence of God to avoid petty controversy over words, which does no good, and [upsets and undermines and] ruins [the faith of] those who listen. 15 Study and do your best to present yourself to God approved, a workman [tested by trial] who has no reason to be ashamed, accurately handling and skillfully teaching the word of truth. 16 But avoid all irreverent babble and godless chatter [with its profane, empty words], for it will lead to further ungodliness, 17 and their teaching will spread like gangrene. So it is with Hymenaeus and Philetus, 18 who have deviated from the truth. They claim that the resurrection has already taken place, and they undermine the faith of some. 19 Nevertheless, the firm foundation of God [which He has laid] stands [sure and unshaken despite attacks], bearing this seal: “The Lord knows those who are His,” and, “Let everyone who names the name of the Lord stand apart from wickedness and withdraw from wrongdoing.”(B)

20 Now in a large house there are not only [b]vessels and objects of gold and silver, but also vessels and objects of wood and of earthenware, and some are for honorable (noble, good) use and some for dishonorable (ignoble, common). 21 Therefore, if anyone cleanses himself from these things [which are dishonorable—disobedient, sinful], he will be a vessel for honor, sanctified [set apart for a special purpose and], useful to the Master, prepared for every good work.

Footnotes:

  1. 2 Timothy 2:2 Lit through.
  2. 2 Timothy 2:20 Like Rom 9:20-23, the analogy here has its roots in OT poetry (e.g. Ps 31:12; Prov 26:23) and prophecy (e.g. Is 45:9; Jer 18:2-6). Paul speaks of believers and unbelievers in Rom 9, but here he seems to be describing God’s household or family, in which all the vessels (containers, utensils) represent believers. While the objects in Rom 9:21 do not change, the vessels here are capable of changing their status and the use to which God puts them by keeping themselves from sinful behavior and influences (v 21).

Psalm 92-93

Praise for the Lord’s Goodness.

A Psalm. A Song for the Sabbath day.

92 It is a good and delightful thing to give thanks to the Lord,
To sing praises to Your name, O Most High,

To declare Your lovingkindness in the morning
And Your faithfulness by night,

With an instrument of ten strings and with the harp,
With a solemn sound on the lyre.

For You, O Lord, have made me glad by Your works;
At the works of Your hands I joyfully sing.

How great are Your works, O Lord!
Your thoughts are very deep [beyond man’s understanding].

A senseless man [in his crude and uncultivated state] knows nothing,
Nor does a [self-righteous] fool understand this:

That though the wicked sprout up like grass
And all evildoers flourish,
They will be destroyed forever.

But You, Lord, are on high forever.

For behold, Your enemies, O Lord,
For behold, Your enemies will perish;
All who do evil will be scattered.

10
But my horn [my emblem of strength and power] You have exalted like that of a wild ox;
I am anointed with fresh oil [for Your service].
11
My eye has looked on my foes;
My ears hear of the evildoers who rise up against me.
12
The righteous will flourish like the date palm [long-lived, upright and useful];
They will grow like a cedar in Lebanon [majestic and stable].
13
Planted in the house of the Lord,
They will flourish in the courts of our God.
14
[Growing in grace] they will still thrive and bear fruit and prosper in old age;
They will flourish and be [a]vital and fresh [rich in trust and love and contentment];
15
[They are living memorials] to declare that the Lord is upright and faithful [to His promises];
He is my rock, and there is no unrighteousness in Him.(A)

The Majesty of the Lord.

93 The Lord reigns, He is clothed with majesty and splendor;
The Lord has clothed and encircled Himself with strength;
the world is firmly established, it cannot be moved.

Your throne is established from of old;
You are from everlasting.

The floods have lifted up, O Lord,
The floods have lifted up their voice;
The floods lift up their pounding waves.

More than the sounds of many waters,
More than the mighty breakers of the sea,
The Lord on high is mighty.

Your precepts are fully confirmed and completely reliable;
Holiness adorns Your house,
O Lord, forever.

Proverbs 26:3-5

A whip for the horse, a bridle for the donkey,
And a rod for the backs of fools [who refuse to learn].

Do not answer [nor pretend to agree with the frivolous comments of] a [closed-minded] fool according to his folly,
Otherwise you, even you, will be like him.

Answer [and correct the erroneous concepts of] a fool according to his folly,
Otherwise he will be wise in his own eyes [if he thinks you agree with him].(A)

Jeremiah 39:1-41:18, 2 Timothy 1:1-18, Psalm 90:1-91:16, Proverbs 26:1-2

Today is the 22nd day of October, welcome to the Daily Audio Bible, I’m Brian. It is a joy to be here with you today gathering around the Global Campfire, moving forward together. And, we’ve been moving forward for a while now through the book of Jeremiah, which is what we will continue to do today, Jeremiah, chapters 39 40 and 41.

Introduction to the Book of II Timothy:

Okay, so we are obviously continuing our journey through Jeremiah and we are in the last stretch in…in the book of Jeremiah. We finished I Timothy. This letter, personal letter, pastoral letter, yesterday, which brings us to a letter known as II Timothy. And like I Timothy, II Timothy is a personal letter, a pastoral letter, a personal letter to a pastor to encourage the ongoing ministry of the church and encourage the pastor which is Timothy. So, there are three of these letters in the New Testament that are known as personal pastoral epistles or letters and they are I and II Timothy and then Titus, which we’ll read next. So, the irony is that I Timothy and Titus were written before II Timothy. So, we’re about to read the last of what we know as the pastoral letters but we’re also reading the last account, the last writing of the apostle Paul, period. So, it’s not the last one that we’re going to read in the New Testament this year, but chronologically it is thought that this is the last writing of Paul. And in a lot of ways that makes it a pretty melancholy letter because we remember that Paul and Timothy were close. Timothy is a son in the faith, and Paul had been in prison, in Rome awaiting trial. And seems like Paul had some freedoms, maybe more like house arrest type things where he had some freedom of mobility while he’s awaiting trial. It also seems as if Paul may have been released from prison for a while and was able to travel again briefly and it’s during those travels that I Timothy and Titus were probably written. And then somewhere in the 60s probably around 66, mid 60s. A.D. then Paul was captured and incarcerated again under the Emperor Nero. And Nero, if you go into Roman Empire history Nero, Nero was known to be savage and he definitely savagely persecuted Christians. And so, Paul’s not kind of under a house arrest or just has a guard or has some mobility, he doesn’t have any of, he’s a true prisoner in a cold dungeon at this point, awaiting the end of his life, which is likely to happen. He’s likely going to be executed and he knows God can do anything, he’s seen God do many things that preserved his life, but at this point he seems to be hopeful but accepting of the fact that he’s probably not leaving the dungeon. He’s probably at the end of his story, his life on earth. So, in many ways, that makes the letter melancholy, even, it’s heartbreaking even. Because now, persecution is actively occurring and now those who had previously been around Paul have pretty much deserted him. He is pretty much alone, pretty much alone in a dungeon and only Luke, who was a doctor, whom we also believe was the author of the Gospel of Luke, as well as the book of Acts, stayed in Rome and was ministering to the needs of the apostle. And perhaps had access to him simply because he was a physician. So, with winter coming on and Paul in a dank Roman dungeon. And I gotta tell you, some of those dank Roman dungeons exist to this day in Rome. Including the one that it is thought that Paul was held in. So, I guess if you just imagine what a dungeon might be like, well then, there you go. This is the conditions of Paul; they didn’t have like central heating and central air. And winter is coming and Paul knows he’s not likely to survive, not so much the winter but survive with his head upon his shoulders. And he had hoped to be able to see Timothy face-to-face in life like one last time, which is pretty much the scenario that we have. This is the backdrop for this letter that we’re about to read and it’s a pretty short letter. Paul has some counsel for his son in the faith, he’d like to give it in person but if things don’t work out, and they never get to see each other again, which they don’t, then Paul wanted to encourage his son in the faith. And in his own way and in a heartbreaking fashion, tell him, tell him goodbye. And Paul will tell Timothy and through this letter he will tell us about vigilance. Vigilance about our faith to be true no matter what happens. And Paul is making himself the very example here, that he’s willing to hold onto his faith and what Jesus and told him, even if it costs him his life, which it does. So, that is kind of the central backdrop to this letter and why we encounter very famous passages like, I have fought the good fight of faith, I have finished the race, super famous passage of Scripture but yeah, when you add the context it’s very powerful indeed. So, this being the last writing attributed to Paul. Even though we have a couple of other letters to read, it’s important to appreciate the impact that Paul had on Christianity. I mean the writings of Paul are major portions of the New Testament and an incredible amount of theology around the Christian faith was developed by Paul and is contained in these letters that we find in the New Testament. Paul is highly regarded among Christian people, like a primary hero of the Christian faith. In fact, without Paul’s letters, without Paul’s impact, the faith in Jesus would be a totally different thing and so let’s appreciate this letter that we are turning into. II Timothy chapter 1.

Prayer:

Father, we thank You for Your word. We thank You for this new letter that we won’t spend a lot of days in but II Timothy and Holy Spirit help us to be in a position, holding with great gratitude and reverence this, these final words of a very important figure in the early church, one that reverberates until today and affects all of us who believe. That being Paul, the apostle. Help us to observe that our brothers and sisters, as this story began the story of the church era. They did not have an easy go of it, they had to endure and some very, very prominent people. People like Paul, had to endure and then had to endure execution. Of course, Jesus You endured these things as well and so, so often we’re looking for Your mighty power to make things easy for us so that we can have a overabundant life that has no resistance at all. When that is not the story that we’re finding in the Scriptures. It’s not the story of our spiritual ancestors, the brothers and sisters who came before us. Nor is it the story that’s being told to us that we must be prepared to endure. In fact, endurance is what makes us strong. So, we come face-to-face with that again as we move through II Timothy and Holy Spirit help us to examine our own lives. Are we fighting the good fight of faith? Are we finishing strong the race set before us? We invite You into those questions as we ponder them today. Holy Spirit come. In the name of Jesus, we ask. Amen.

Prayer and Encouragements:

Hi yes, my name is Derek Claims, first time caller. I just dedicated my life to God this year. And today is the 15th of October but I dedicated my life back in January, January the 3rd 2021. And I’ve been listening to this podcast probably about, I wanna say, about 8 months now. I’m currently incarcerated. I just wanted to give out a few shout outs. Renzo from Florida, bro you’re doing you’re thing and I respect it. Esther from Kissimmee, it’s been a while since I heard from you, I’ve been trying to get my MB to call and call it in for it but I haven’t. Just heard you today. Lady, you have taught me how to pray. I thank you, thank God for you. Holly Heart, thank you so much for your prayers, you pray so much. For Junk to Treasures, I appreciate your prayers too, like you guys are putting patterns away from me. Like Christianity and also, I’m new to the podcast. I’m currently in jail and this is what gets me through. There are so many others; Diane Olive Brown, His Little Sharie, I’m thankful for you guys. You guys make my day. Every morning I start my day. Also, Rebecca from Michigan, thank you, thank you so much. Every time you call in, I’m inspired. I can’t actually make calls. Thank you though.

Good morning DABers, this is V from Mississippi. And this message is for Asia and the young lady and her husband that moved, packed there family up and moved them across country. And she’s having a really bad time. Sweetheart, please get some positivity in your life. Please start with just getting up saying Father God, I thank You, I thank You for today like I do every day. I need You Father. Father God, I just thank You for Your favor in my life. And I truly believe that good things are gonna start coming to you and your family’s way. But we need to still just step over the negative and walk right into the positive. That’s what I started doing and I don’t care what others say but my vision is improving and getting a whole lot better. And I just started thanking God for the thing that I do have. Then, I just, joy just came into my life. Just cause I started replacing that negativity with positive. And Asia, we’re all struggling right now sweetheart, just keep the faith and keep on praying honey cause I can see a breakthrough coming your way. Hang in there, this is V from Mississippi. I love you guys. Thank you, Brian and Jill, for this podcast.

Hello Daily Audio Bible family again. I have a request for my sister. Her name’s Kim. And, this is Just John. So, she’s continuing to struggle with alcoholism, physical problems, mental problems, marital problems and she’s weighing heavy on my heart. So, I’m just asking for prayer for her. Thank you so much. I’ll continue to listen. I appreciate everybody. Thank you.

Hi, I want to first thank God for all of you. Thank you, Brian, Jill and the whole team at DAB. Thank you for your faithful service and endurance for our Lord, Jesus Christ. Thank you for taking up your cross daily and following God’s call on your life. Thank you DAB family for doing the same through confessions, prayers, obedience and encouragements. Every one of you plays a unique part as you fill your spot in this community. Now, a special thank you to the unnamed caller who was obedient to the prompting of the Spirit to call and pray over us who needed to hear the message to stay strong in the Lord. Because yes, someone did need to hear that, it was me. I was in the middle of experiencing something that I asked God how will I ever heal from this. So, with Brian’s reading of today in culmination with the commentary and this prayer is how God answered my question. The best way I can describe what happened is he closed and healed that wound and sealed it with the balm of His Holy Spirit. So, thank you for being faithful and letting yourself be used by the Lord. Esther, it was so good to hear from you. We have been praying for you and want to bless you with a prayer from the unknown caller that aired on 10/16/21. God bless you and keep you.

Hey, Daily Audio Bible, this is Derek from Sandhill in Nebraska. I got a young man and his sister’s family on my mind. And I know y'all care, I just wanted to pray for my friend James, Lord. And, You have this handled and it’s hard being a human, we don’t understand Your plan. God, I don’t want my friends to lose their son. I know it’s supposed to be better there but it’s kind of hard here and he’s a big light for You. And pray for his sister Addie. And, pray for all of them Lord. I know people are suffering but this is a real prayer request. Amen. Thanks guys God Bless you. Thanks Brian.

Jeremiah 39-41

Jerusalem Captured

39 Now regarding the capture of Jerusalem: In the ninth year of [the reign of] Zedekiah king of Judah, in the tenth month, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and all his army came against Jerusalem and besieged it;(A) and in the eleventh year of Zedekiah, in the fourth month, on the ninth day of the month, they breached the wall and broke into the city. Then all the officials of the king of Babylon came in and sat in the Middle Gate [establishing both military control of the city and their authority to judge the captives]: Nergal-sar-ezer, Samgar-nebu, Sar-sekim the Rab-saris (chief of the eunuchs), and [a]Nergal-sar-ezer the Rab-mag (chief of the magicians), with all the rest of the officials of the king of Babylon. When Zedekiah the king of Judah and all the men of war saw them, they fled and escaped from the city at night by way of the king’s garden, through the gate between the two walls; and the king went out toward the Arabah (Jordan Valley). But the Chaldean (Babylonian) army pursued them and overtook Zedekiah in the plains of Jericho. When they had seized him, they brought him up to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon at Riblah in the [Aramean] land of Hamath, where he passed sentence on him. Then at Riblah the king of Babylon killed the sons of Zedekiah before his eyes; the king of Babylon also killed all the nobles of Judah. Moreover, he blinded Zedekiah and bound him with bronze shackles to take him to Babylon.(B) The Chaldeans also burned down the king’s palace and the houses of the people, and they broke down the walls of Jerusalem. Then Nebuzaradan the [chief executioner and] captain of the bodyguard took the rest of the people who remained in the city, along with those who had deserted and surrendered to him, and the rest of the [so-called better class of] people who were left and carried them into exile in Babylon. 10 But Nebuzaradan the [Babylonian] captain of the bodyguard left behind in the land of Judah some of the poor people who had nothing, and gave them vineyards and fields at that time.

Jeremiah Spared

11 Now Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon gave orders concerning Jeremiah through Nebuzaradan the captain of the bodyguard, saying, 12 “Take him and look after him; do nothing to harm him, but rather deal with him just as he asks of you.” 13 So Nebuzaradan the captain of the bodyguard sent word, along with Nebushazban the Rab-saris (chief of the high officials), and Nergal-sar-ezer the Rab-mag (chief of the magicians), and all the leading officers of the king of Babylon; 14 they even sent and took Jeremiah out of the court of the guardhouse and entrusted him to Gedaliah [a prominent citizen], the son of Ahikam [who had once saved Jeremiah’s life], the son of Shaphan, to take him home [with him to Mizpah]. So Jeremiah [was released and] lived among the people.(C)

15 Now the word of the Lord had come to Jeremiah while he was [still] confined in the court of the guardhouse, saying, 16 “Go and speak to Ebed-melech the Ethiopian, saying, ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, “Behold, I am about to bring My words [of judgment] against this city through disaster and not for good; and they will take place before you on that day. 17 But I will [b]protect you [Ebed-melech] on that day,” says the Lord, “and you will not be handed over to the men of whom you are afraid.(D) 18 For I will certainly rescue you; and you will not fall by the sword, but you will have your [own] life as a reward of battle, because you have placed your trust in Me,” says the Lord.’”

Jeremiah Remains in Judah

40 The word which came to Jeremiah from the Lord after Nebuzaradan the captain of the bodyguard had released him from Ramah, when he had taken him bound in chains among all the captives of Jerusalem and Judah who were being taken as exiles to Babylon. And the captain of the bodyguard had taken Jeremiah and said to him, “The Lord your God promised this disaster on this place. Now the Lord has brought it about and has done just as He promised. Because you [people of Judah] have sinned against the Lord and did not listen to and honor His voice, therefore this thing has happened to you. But now, listen carefully, [because of your innocence] I am freeing you today from the chains which are on your hands. If you would prefer to come with me to Babylon, come, and I will look after you [carefully]; but if you would prefer not to come with me to Babylon, then do not do so. Look, all the land is before you; go wherever it seems good and right (convenient) for you to go.” While Jeremiah was still hesitating, the captain of the bodyguard said, “Go on back then to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, whom the king of Babylon has appointed [governor] over the cities of Judah, and stay with him among the people; or else go wherever it seems right for you to go.” So the captain of the bodyguard gave him an allowance of food and a gift and let him go. Then Jeremiah went to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam at Mizpah and stayed with him among the people who were left in the land.

Now when all the commanders of the forces that were [scattered] in the open country [of Judah] and their men heard that the king of Babylon had made Gedaliah the son of Ahikam governor in the land [of Judah] and had put him in charge of the men, women, and children, those of the poorest of the land who had not been exiled to Babylon, they went to Gedaliah at Mizpah—Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, Johanan and Jonathan the sons of Kareah, Seraiah the son of Tanhumeth, the sons of Ephai the Netophathite, and Jezaniah the son of the Maacathite, they and their men. Then Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, swore to them and their men, saying, “Do not be afraid to serve the Chaldeans; stay in this land and serve the king of Babylon, that it may go well with you. 10 As for me, I am going to stay at Mizpah to stand [for you] before the Chaldeans who come to us [ministering to them and looking after the king’s interests]; but as for you, gather in wine, summer fruit and oil and store them in your utensils [designed for such purposes], and live in your cities that you have taken over.” 11 Likewise, when all the Jews who were in Moab and among the people of Ammon and in Edom and who were in all the [other] countries heard that the king of Babylon had left a remnant [of the people] in Judah and had appointed Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan over them [as governor], 12 then all the Jews returned from all the places to which they had been driven and came back to the land of Judah, to Gedaliah at Mizpah, and gathered a great abundance of wine and summer fruits.

13 Moreover, Johanan the son of Kareah and all the commanders of the forces that were [scattered] in the open country came to Gedaliah at Mizpah 14 and said to him, “Do you know that Baalis the king of the Ammonites has sent Ishmael the son of Nethaniah to take your life?” But Gedaliah the son of Ahikam did not believe them. 15 Then Johanan the son of Kareah spoke secretly to Gedaliah in Mizpah, saying, “Let me go and kill Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, and not a man will know [who is responsible]. Why should he kill you and cause all the Jews who are gathered near you to be scattered and the remnant of Judah to perish?” 16 But Gedaliah the son of Ahikam said to Johanan the son of Kareah, “Do not do this thing, for you are lying about Ishmael.”

Gedaliah Is Murdered

41 Now in the [c]seventh month Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, the son of Elishama, of the royal family [of David] and one of the princes of the king, came [at the instigation of the Ammonites] with ten men to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam in Mizpah. As they were eating a meal together there in Mizpah, Ishmael the son of Nethaniah and the ten men who were with him got up and struck down Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, with the sword and killed the one whom the king of Babylon had appointed [governor] over the land.(E) Ishmael also killed all the Jews who were [at the banquet] with Gedaliah at Mizpah, in addition to the Chaldean soldiers who were there.

Now it happened on the second day after the killing of Gedaliah, before anyone knew about it, that eighty men came from Shechem, from Shiloh, and from Samaria with their beards shaved off and their clothes torn and their bodies cut, carrying in their hands grain offerings and incense to present at the [site of the] house of the Lord [in Jerusalem]. Then Ishmael the son of Nethaniah went out from Mizpah to meet them, weeping [false tears] as he went. As he met them, he said to them, “Come to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam!” Yet when they came into the city, Ishmael the son of Nethaniah and the men who were with him slaughtered them and threw them into the cistern (underground water reservoir). But ten men who were among them said to Ishmael, “Do not kill us! We have stores of wheat and barley and oil and honey hidden in the field.” So he stopped and did not kill them along with their companions.

Now the cistern into which Ishmael had thrown all the corpses of the men whom he had killed along with Gedaliah was the one which King Asa [of Judah] had made [about three hundred years earlier] on account of King Baasha of Israel [believing that Baasha would lay siege to Mizpah]. Ishmael the son of Nethaniah filled it with [the bodies of] those who were killed. 10 Then Ishmael took captive all the rest of the people who were in Mizpah—even the king’s daughters (ladies of the court) and all the people who remained in Mizpah, whom Nebuzaradan the captain of the bodyguard had put under the charge of Gedaliah the son of Ahikam. Ishmael the son of Nethaniah took them captive and crossed over [the Jordan] to [meet his allies] the Ammonites.

Johanan Rescues the People

11 But when Johanan the son of Kareah and all the commanders of the forces that were with him heard of the murderous behavior of Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, 12 they took all their men and went to fight with Ishmael the son of Nethaniah and found him by the great pool in Gibeon. 13 Now when all the [captive] people who were with Ishmael saw Johanan the son of Kareah and all the commanders of the forces that were with him, they were glad. 14 So all the people whom Ishmael had taken captive from Mizpah turned around and came back, and joined Johanan the son of Kareah. 15 But Ishmael the son of Nethaniah escaped from Johanan with eight men and went to join the Ammonites. 16 Then Johanan the son of Kareah and all the commanders of the forces that were with him took from Mizpah all the people whom he had rescued from Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, after Ishmael had killed Gedaliah the son of Ahikam: the soldiers, the women, the children, and the high officials whom Johanan had brought back from Gibeon. 17 And they went and stayed in Geruth [the lodging place of] Chimham, which is near Bethlehem, intending to go to Egypt 18 because of the Chaldeans; for they were afraid of them because Ishmael the son of Nethaniah had killed Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, whom the king of Babylon had appointed [governor] over the land [and whose death the king might avenge].

2 Timothy 1

Timothy Charged to Guard His Trust

Paul, an apostle (special messenger, personally chosen representative) of Christ Jesus (the Messiah, the Anointed) by the will of God, according to the promise of life that is in Christ Jesus,

to Timothy, my beloved son: Grace, mercy, and peace [inner calm and spiritual well-being] from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.

I thank God, whom I worship and serve with a clear conscience the way my forefathers did, as I constantly remember you in my prayers night and day, and as I recall your tears, I long to see you so that I may be filled with joy. I remember your sincere and unqualified faith [the surrendering of your entire self to God in Christ with confident trust in His power, wisdom and goodness, a faith] which first lived in [the heart of] your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice, and I am confident that it is in you as well. That is why I remind you to [a]fan into flame the gracious gift of God, [that inner fire—the special endowment] which is in you through the laying on of my hands [with those of the elders at your ordination]. For God did not give us a spirit of timidity or cowardice or fear, but [He has given us a spirit] of power and of love and of sound judgment and personal discipline [abilities that result in a calm, well-balanced mind and self-control].

So do not be ashamed to testify about our Lord or about me His prisoner, but with me take your share of suffering for the gospel [continue to preach regardless of the circumstances], in accordance with the power of God [for His power is invincible], for He delivered us and saved us and called us with a holy calling [a calling that leads to a consecrated life—a life set apart—a life of purpose], not because of our works [or because of any personal merit—we could do nothing to earn this], but because of His own purpose and grace [His amazing, undeserved favor] which was granted to us in Christ Jesus before the world began [eternal ages ago], 10 but now [that extraordinary purpose and grace] has been fully disclosed and realized by us through the appearing of our Savior Christ Jesus who [through His incarnation and earthly ministry] abolished death [making it null and void] and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel, 11 for which I was appointed a preacher and an apostle and a teacher [of this good news regarding salvation]. 12 This is why I suffer as I do. Still, I am not ashamed; for I know Him [and I am personally acquainted with Him] whom I have believed [with absolute trust and confidence in Him and in the truth of His deity], and I am persuaded [beyond any doubt] that He is able to guard that which I have entrusted to Him until [b]that day [when I stand before Him].(A) 13 Keep and follow the pattern of sound teaching (doctrine) which you have heard from me, in the faith and love which are in Christ Jesus. 14 Guard [with greatest care] and keep unchanged, the treasure [that precious truth] which has been entrusted to you [that is, the good news about salvation through personal faith in Christ Jesus], through [the help of] the Holy Spirit who dwells in us.

15 You are aware of the fact that all who are in [the province of] Asia turned away and deserted me, Phygelus and Hermogenes among them. 16 The Lord grant mercy to the family of Onesiphorus, because he often refreshed me and showed me kindness [comforting and reviving me like fresh air] and he was not ashamed of my chains [for Christ’s sake]; 17 but [instead] when he reached Rome, he eagerly searched for me and found me— 18 the Lord grant to him that he may find mercy from the Lord on [c]that [great] day. You know very well how many things he did for me and what a help he was at Ephesus [you know better than I can tell you].

Psalm 90-91

Book Four

God’s Eternity and Man’s Transitoriness.

A Prayer of Moses the man of God.

90 Lord, You have been our dwelling place [our refuge, our sanctuary, our stability] in all generations.

Before the mountains were born
Or before You had given birth to the earth and the world,
Even from everlasting to everlasting, You are [the eternal] God.

You turn man back to dust,
And say, “Return [to the earth], O children of [mortal] men!”

For a [a]thousand years in Your sight
Are like yesterday when it is past,
Or as a watch in the night.(A)

You have swept them away like a flood, they fall asleep [forgotten as soon as they are gone];
In the morning they are like grass which grows anew—

In the morning it flourishes and springs up;
In the evening it wilts and withers away.

For we have been consumed by Your anger
And by Your wrath we have been terrified.

You have placed our wickedness before you,
Our secret sins [which we tried to conceal, You have placed] in the [revealing] light of Your presence.

For all our days pass away in Your wrath;
We have finished our years like a whispered sigh.(B)
10
The days of our life are [b]seventy years—
Or even, if because of strength, eighty years;
Yet their pride [in additional years] is only labor and sorrow,
For it is soon gone and we fly away.
11
Who understands the power of Your anger? [Who connects this brevity of life among us with Your judgment of sin?]
And Your wrath, [who connects it] with the [reverent] fear that is due You?
12
So teach us to number our days,
That we may cultivate and bring to You a heart of wisdom.

13
Turn, O Lord [from Your fierce anger]; how long will it be?
Be compassionate toward Your servants—revoke Your sentence.
14
O satisfy us with Your lovingkindness in the morning [now, before we grow older],
That we may rejoice and be glad all our days.
15
Make us glad in proportion to the days You have afflicted us,
And the years we have suffered evil.
16
Let Your work [the signs of Your power] be revealed to Your servants
And Your [glorious] majesty to their children.
17
And let the [gracious] favor of the Lord our God be on us;
Confirm for us the work of our hands—
Yes, confirm the work of our hands.

Security of the One Who Trusts in the Lord.

91 He who [c]dwells in the shelter of the Most High
Will remain secure and rest in the shadow of the Almighty [whose power no enemy can withstand].

I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress,
My God, in whom I trust [with great confidence, and on whom I rely]!”

For He will save you from the trap of the fowler,
And from the deadly pestilence.

He will cover you and completely protect you with His pinions,
And under His wings you will find refuge;
His faithfulness is a shield and a wall.

You will not be afraid of the terror of night,
Nor of the arrow that flies by day,

Nor of the pestilence that stalks in darkness,
Nor of the destruction (sudden death) that lays waste at noon.

A thousand may fall at your side
And ten thousand at your right hand,
But danger will not come near you.

You will only [be a spectator as you] look on with your eyes
And witness the [divine] repayment of the wicked [as you watch safely from the shelter of the Most High].

Because you have made the Lord, [who is] my refuge,
Even the Most High, your dwelling place,(C)
10
No evil will befall you,
Nor will any plague come near your tent.

11
For He will command His angels in regard to you,
To protect and defend and guard you in all your ways [of obedience and service].
12
They will lift you up in their hands,
So that you do not [even] strike your foot against a stone.(D)
13
You will tread upon the lion and cobra;
The young lion and the serpent you will trample underfoot.(E)

14
“Because he set his love on Me, therefore I will save him;
I will set him [securely] on high, because he knows My name [he confidently trusts and relies on Me, knowing I will never abandon him, no, never].
15
“He will call upon Me, and I will answer him;
I will be with him in trouble;
I will rescue him and honor him.
16
“With a long life I will satisfy him
And I will let him see My salvation.”

Footnotes:

  1. Psalm 90:4 This was understood by the ancient rabbis to mean that a “thousand years” are literally only one day in God’s reckoning, and Peter seems to confirm the idea in 2 Pet 3:8.
  2. Psalm 90:10 This psalm is credited to Moses, who is interceding with God to remove the curse which made it necessary for every Israelite over twenty years of age (when they rebelled against God at Kadesh-barnea) to die before reaching the promised land of Canaan (Num 14:26-35). Moses himself lived to be 120 years old, Aaron 123, Miriam several years older, and Joshua 110 years of age; but it is conceivable that Moses considered such longevity the exception. The ancient rabbis taught that by the time of David, 70 was the age of death for an old man and 80 for a vigorous old man.
  3. Psalm 91:1 The wonderful promises of this chapter are dependent upon one’s meeting the conditions stated in these first two verses (see Ex 15:26).

Proverbs 26:1-2

Similitudes, Instructions

26 Like snow in summer and like rain in harvest,
So honor is not fitting for a [shortsighted] [a]fool.(A)

Like the sparrow in her wandering, like the swallow in her flying,
So the curse without cause does not come and alight [on the undeserving].(B)
