Daniel 9:1-11, 1 John 2:18-3:6, Psalms 121:1-8, Proverbs 28:27-28

Today is the 2nd day of December. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I’m Brian. It’s great to be here with you. And here we are, a second day of the final month of the year and first day of the brand-new week. And obviously this will be our first full week in the month of December. However, today begins the season of Advent. Today is the first Sunday in Advent and if… I mean…obviously if you observe Advent then you already know that. If you don’t have it is the traditional season of contemplation and preparing our hearts for the Advent, which means arrival, the arrival of the Savior. So, it allows our hearts to enter into the story. And, of course, we’ll talk about that as we move further and further into the season, but today is the first Sunday in Advent. And, so, if you’re like, lighting Advent candles, you would light the first candle, the prophets candle, which represents our word for the year. Today is the first Sunday of Advent, which represents hope. So, let’s go into this season together, full of hope.

Song:

Hope Was Born This Night – Sidewalk Prophets

Tonight I can see a star shine

And its splendor fills up the sky

It’s the same that appeared

And the wisemen revered

When Hope was born this night

Out upon the snowy fields

There’s a silent peace that heals

And it echoes the grace

Of our Savior’s embrace

Because Hope was born this night

Glory to God in the highest

Peace on earth

Goodwill to men

Let all of the world

Sing the chorus of joy

Because Hope was born this night

I can hear the Christmas bells ringing

As softly a church choir sings

It’s the song used to praise

The ancient of days

When Hope was born this night

There are angels in this place

And my heart resounds in the praise

Like a shepherd so scared

I’ll rejoice and declare

That Hope was born this night

Glory to God in the highest

Peace on earth

Goodwill to men

Let all of the world

Sing the chorus of joy

Because Hope was born this night

Gloria

Gloria

Gloria

Gloria

Glory to God in the highest

Peace on earth

Goodwill to men

Let all of the world

Sing the chorus of joy

Because Hope was born this night

Because Hope was born this night

know hope was born this night

Because Christ was born this night

So, as we go into this first Sunday of advent and immerse ourselves fully in the season and in the brand-new month that we have, we’ll be the God’s Word Translation. And of course, is our constant tradition, we’ll pick up where we left off yesterday and take the next step forward, which will lead us back into the book of Daniel. Today chapter 9 verse one through 11 verse one.

Prayer:

Father, we thank you for your word and we certainly thank you for this brand-new month and the beginning of this season that we know of as Advent and we invite your Holy Spirit to allow us to contemplate, to allow some space in our lives even in all of the busyness that will only get worse and worse as we move forward, to simply slow down and actually give some thought and some heart space to what this season is all about. So many years ago now the people waited, they waited for Savior to come as was foretold and then you came. And we rejoice because you have come, but we find that we too are waiting, we are waiting for a return, your second Advent, your second arrival that we read about in Scripture. So in this season of Advent we embrace that longing that we are ultimately longing for all to be made whole, all to be restored and made right. This is our hope and obviously a central piece of that story was coming, your arrival. And, so, in this season, yes it’s festive, yes it’s joyous, but in this season we embrace the undercurrent, the longing, the joy, the deepest joy that you would not believe people abandoned, that you came to rescue us, So, come Holy Spirit and plant this deep in our lives as we move further into this season we pray. In the mighty name of Jesus. We ask. Amen.

Daniel 9:1-11

Daniel’s Prayer about Jerusalem Is Answered

Xerxes’ son Darius, who was a Mede by birth, was made ruler of the kingdom of Babylon. In the first year of his reign, I, Daniel, learned from the Scriptures the number of years that Jerusalem would remain in ruins. The Lord had told the prophet Jeremiah that Jerusalem would remain in ruins for 70 years. So I turned to the Lord God and looked to him for help. I prayed, pleaded, and fasted in sackcloth and ashes.

I prayed to the Lord my God. I confessed and said, “Lord, you are great and deserve respect as the only God. You keep your promise[a] and show mercy to those who love you and obey your commandments. We have sinned, done wrong, acted wickedly, rebelled, and turned away from your commandments and laws. We haven’t listened to your servants the prophets, who spoke in your name to our kings, leaders, ancestors, and all the common people. You, Lord, are righteous. But we—the men of Judah, the citizens of Jerusalem, and all the Israelites whom you scattered in countries near and far—are still ashamed because we have been unfaithful to you. We, our kings, leaders, and ancestors are ashamed because we have sinned against you, Lord.

“But you, Lord our God, are compassionate and forgiving, although we have rebelled against you. 10 We never listened to you or lived by the teachings you gave us through your servants the prophets. 11 All Israel has ignored your teachings and refused to listen to you. So you brought on us the curses you swore in an oath, the curses written in the Teachings of your servant Moses. We sinned against you.

1 John 2:18-3:6

Live in Christ

18 Children, it’s the end of time. You’ve heard that an antichrist is coming. Certainly, many antichrists are already here. That’s how we know it’s the end of time. 19 They left us. However, they were never really part of us. If they had been, they would have stayed with us. But by leaving they made it clear that none of them were part of us.

20 The Holy One has anointed you, so all of you have knowledge. 21 I’m writing to you because you know the truth, not because you don’t know the truth. You know that no lie ever comes from the truth.

22 Who is a liar? Who else but the person who rejects Jesus as the Messiah? The person who rejects the Father and the Son is an antichrist. 23 Everyone who rejects the Son doesn’t have the Father either. The person who acknowledges the Son also has the Father. 24 Make sure that the message you heard from the beginning lives in you. If that message lives in you, you will also live in the Son and in the Father. 25 Christ has given us the promise of eternal life.

26 I’m writing to you about those who are trying to deceive you. 27 The anointing you received from Christ lives in you. You don’t need anyone to teach you something else. Instead, Christ’s anointing teaches you about everything. His anointing is true and contains no lie. So live in Christ as he taught you to do.

We Are God’s Children

28 Now, dear children, live in Christ. Then, when he appears we will have confidence, and when he comes we won’t turn from him in shame. 29 If you know that Christ has God’s approval, you also know that everyone who does what God approves of has been born from God.

Consider this: The Father has given us his love. He loves us so much that we are actually called God’s dear children. And that’s what we are. For this reason the world doesn’t recognize us, and it didn’t recognize him either. Dear friends, now we are God’s children. What we will be isn’t completely clear yet. We do know that when Christ appears we will be like him because we will see him as he is. So all people who have this confidence in Christ keep themselves pure, as Christ is pure.

Those who live sinful lives are disobeying God. Sin is disobedience. You know that Christ appeared in order to take away our sins. He isn’t sinful. Those who live in Christ don’t go on sinning. Those who go on sinning haven’t seen or known Christ.

Psalm 121

I look up toward the mountains.
Where can I find help?
My help comes from the Lord,
the maker of heaven and earth.
He will not let you fall.
Your guardian will not fall asleep.
Indeed, the Guardian of Israel never rests or sleeps.
The Lord is your guardian.
The Lord is the shade over your right hand.
The sun will not beat down on you during the day,
nor will the moon at night.
The Lord guards you from every evil.
He guards your life.
The Lord guards you as you come and go,
now and forever.

Daniel 8:1-27, 1 John 2:1-17, Psalm 120:1-7, Proverbs 28:25-26

Today is the 1st day of December. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I’m Brian. It is a pleasure, it is a joy, and a day of rejoicing that we’ve made it this far. So, we’re at the last day of a week, but the first day of a month, and it’s the first day of the month of the last month of the year. So, off we go friends. This is our final adventure for this year. The day that we conclude this month we will conclude this year and will conclude this revolution through the Bible. So, let’s dive in and take the next step forward. All this week we’ve been reading from the Contemporary English Version, which is what we’ll do today. Daniel chapter 8 verses 1 through 27 today.

Commentary:

Okay. So, in first John and in harmony with the letters from James and the letters from Peter, John taught that the evidence for a claim of faith is to be a transformed life otherwise it’s an untrue claim. And he said it like this, “but if we claim to know Him and don’t obey Him we are lying, and the truth is in our hearts. We truly love God only when we obey him as we should and then we know that we belong to Him. If we say we are His, we must follow the example of Christ.” So, as we can see, John doesn’t mince any words any more than Peter or James did about these kinds of subjects. And why would he? I mean, the fundamental goal of our faith is that we might live our lives as Jesus did, right? And becoming Christlike isn’t just something that we, like, that we say, like, we claim. It’s something that we have to become, which requires our participation and our collaboration with God. And this doesn’t just apply to our interaction with God, it touches all of the relationships of our lives, which is something that John pointed out. So, in his own words, “if we claim to be in the light and hate someone, we are still in the dark, but if we love others we are in the light and we don’t cause problems for them. If we hate others we are living and walking in the dark, we don’t know where were going because we can’t see in the dark.” So, I mean John’s point here as we begin this final month of the year is pretty clear and that point is, talk is cheap. We can claim whatever we want but if our words and our deeds are not in alignment with each other then we aren’t living truthfully. And, okay, that’s fair enough and penetrating. I mean, that’s a glass of cold ice water in the face. But why are we pulled toward what is false? According to John, the problem is that we’ve put our trust in the world. So, in John’s words, “don’t revolve the world or anything that belongs to the world. If you love the world you cannot love the Father. Our foolish pride comes from this world and so do our selfish desires and our desire to have everything we see. None of this comes from the Father.” So, let’s be clear. When John spoke about the world he’s not referring to planet Earth. Instead, he’s describing the system that the world…basically the system that mankind has devised to navigate this world without God. So, if we’re gonna put our faith and our hope in a system that is designed to exalt man then we are trusting in the world and God is not in that. And this is why our sensual cravings for everything that we see and our pride in our accomplishments and our pride in our material possessions, this is why they can’t fill the void in our souls. Like, if we’re going to tether ourselves to this kind of existence, then according to John, we can’t make claims of faith that are true. And if that’s a not a stark enough awareness, John informed us that the world system that we may have put our trust in and that we may give our loyalty and allegiance to, its destined to fade away. So, we’ll take some time today here at the shiny threshold of a new month to examine ourselves by actually contrasting our claims with our actions, like getting observant and watching what it is that we say versus what it is that we do, that we’ll find that our deepest insecurity is tied to our attempts to make life work without God, right, the world’s system. And we’re looking to the world to give us meaning and purpose. And, so, we obviously react in pride and selfishness or we surround ourselves with stuff so that we can mask the emptiness. John challenged us to pull away from the fading world system and realize that we’ve been given so much more than the world could ever offer. We’ve been swept into the dance of eternal life. So, here we are, first day of the final month of the year. It’s a sprint to the end of the year and there’s a lot of territory to cover and not to mention the fact that is going to be a busy month. Let’s embrace what we’re talking about today. Our words and our deeds must be in alignment or our faith is false. That’s stark, but we are invited to pull away from the world system knowing that eternal life is ours. And if we will embrace this and choose to bring our claims and actions into alignment we will be walking on a narrow path that leads to life, even in the busy seasons of the year.

Prayer:

Father as we enter into this new month, we invite Your Holy Spirit into what we just talked about and every other moment, everything that’s going to happen by surprise, everything that’s going to happen by plan, every interaction, every conversation, every gift we’re gonna bye, we want You to be part of all of this. Come Holy Spirit. We ask in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Daniel 8

Vision of a Ram and a Goat

Daniel wrote:

In the third year of King Belshazzar of Babylonia,[a] I had a second vision in which I was in Susa, the chief city of Babylonia’s Elam Province. I was beside the Ulai River,[b] when I looked up and saw a ram standing there with two horns on its head—both of them were long, but the second one was longer than the first. The ram went charging toward the west, the north, and the south. No other animals were strong enough to oppose him, and nothing could save them from his power. So he did as he pleased and became even more powerful.

I kept on watching and saw a goat come from the west and charge across the entire earth, without even touching the ground. Between his eyes was a powerful horn,[c] and with tremendous anger the goat started toward the ram that I had seen beside the river.[d] The goat was so fierce that its attack broke both horns of the ram, leaving him powerless. Then the goat stomped on the ram, and no one could do anything to help. After this, the goat became even more powerful. But at the peak of his power, his mighty horn was broken, and four other mighty horns took its place—one pointing to the north and one to the east, one to the south and one to the west.

A little horn came from one of these, and its power reached to the south, the east, and even to the holy land.[e] 10 It became so strong that it attacked the stars in the sky, which were heaven’s army.[f] Then it threw some of them down to the earth and stomped on them. 11-12 It humiliated heaven’s army and dishonored its leader[g] by keeping him from offering the daily sacrifices. In fact, it was so terrible that it even disgraced the temple and wiped out true worship. It also did everything else it wanted to do.

13 Then one of the holy angels asked another, “When will the daily sacrifices be offered again? What about this horrible rebellion? When will the temple and heaven’s army no longer be trampled in the dust?”

14 The other answered, “It will be two thousand three hundred evenings and mornings before the temple is dedicated and in use again.”

Gabriel Interprets the Vision

15 Daniel wrote:

I was trying to figure out the meaning of the vision, when someone suddenly appeared there beside me. 16 And from beside the Ulai River,[h] a voice like that of a human said, “Gabriel, help him understand the vision.”

17 Gabriel came over, and I fell to the ground in fear. Then he said, “You are merely a human, but you need to understand that this vision is about the end of time.”

18 While he was speaking, I fell facedown in a deep sleep. But he lifted me to my feet 19 and said:

Listen, and I will tell you what will happen at the end of time, when God has chosen to show his anger. 20 The two horns of the ram are the kings of Media and Persia, 21 the goat is the kingdom of Greece, and the powerful horn between his eyes is the first of its kings. 22 After this horn is broken, four other kingdoms will appear, but they won’t be as strong.

23 When these rulers have become as evil as possible, their power will end, and then a king who is dangerous and cannot be trusted will appear. 24 He will gain strength, but not on his own, and he will cause terrible destruction. He will wipe out powerful leaders and God’s people as well. 25 His deceitful lies will make him so successful, that he will think he is really great. Suddenly he will kill many people, and he will even attack God, the Supreme Ruler. But God will crush him!

26 This vision about the evenings and mornings is true, but these things won’t happen for a long time, so don’t tell it to others.

27 After this, I was so worn out and weak that it was several days before I could get out of bed and go about my duties for the king. I was disturbed by this vision that made no sense to me.

1 John 2:1-17

Christ Helps Us

My children, I am writing this so that you won’t sin. But if you do sin, Jesus Christ always does the right thing, and he will speak to the Father for us. Christ is the sacrifice that takes away our sins and the sins of all the world’s people.

When we obey God, we are sure that we know him. But if we claim to know him and don’t obey him, we are lying and the truth isn’t in our hearts. We truly love God only when we obey him as we should, and then we know that we belong to him. If we say we are his, we must follow the example of Christ.

The New Commandment

My dear friends, I am not writing to give you a new commandment. It is the same one that you were first given, and it is the message you heard. But it really is a new commandment, and you know its true meaning, just as Christ does. You can see the darkness fading away and the true light already shining.

If we claim to be in the light and hate someone, we are still in the dark. 10 But if we love others, we are in the light, and we don’t cause problems for them.[a] 11 If we hate others, we are living and walking in the dark. We don’t know where we are going, because we can’t see in the dark.

12 Children, I am writing you,
because your sins
have been forgiven
in the name of Christ.
13 Parents, I am writing you,
because you have known
the one who was there
from the beginning.
Young people, I am writing you,
because you have defeated
the evil one.
14 Children, I am writing you,
because you have known
the Father.
Parents, I am writing you,
because you have known
the one who was there
from the beginning.
Young people, I am writing you,
because you are strong.
God’s message is firm
in your hearts,
and you have defeated
the evil one.

15 Don’t love the world or anything that belongs to the world. If you love the world, you cannot love the Father. 16 Our foolish pride comes from this world, and so do our selfish desires and our desire to have everything we see. None of this comes from the Father. 17 The world and the desires it causes are disappearing. But if we obey God, we will live forever.

Footnotes:

  1. 2.10 and we don’t cause problems for them: Or “and we can see anything that might make us fall.”

Psalm 120

(A song for worship.)

A Prayer for the Lord’s Help

120 When I am in trouble, I pray,
“Come and save me, Lord,
from deceitful liars!”

What punishment is fitting
for you deceitful liars?
Your reward should be
sharp and flaming arrows!

But I must live as a foreigner
among the people of Meshech
and in the tents of Kedar.[a]
I have spent too much time
living among people
who hate peace.
I am in favor of peace,
but when I speak of it,
all they want is war.

Footnotes:

  1. 120.5 Meshech. . . Kedar: Meshech was a country near the Black Sea, and Kedar was a tribe of the Syrian desert.

Proverbs 28:25-26

25 Selfish people cause trouble,
but you will live a full life
if you trust the Lord.
26 Only fools would trust
what they alone think,
but if you live by wisdom,
you will do all right.
