2 Kings 8:1-9:13

Elisha Helps a Shunem Woman Get Her Land Back

Elisha had told the woman whose son he had brought back to life, “Go away with your family. Stay wherever you can. The Lord has decided to send a famine on this country, and it will last seven years.”

The woman did what the man of God told her. She and her family went to live in Philistine territory for seven years. At the end of seven years, the woman came home from Philistine territory but left again to make an appeal to the king about her house and land.

The king was talking to Gehazi, the servant of the man of God. He said, “Please tell me about all the great things Elisha has done.” While Gehazi was telling the king how Elisha brought a dead child back to life, the mother came to make an appeal to the king about her house and land.

Gehazi said, “Your Majesty, this is the woman, and this is her son whom Elisha brought back to life.”

When the king asked the woman about this, she told him the story. So the king assigned to her an attendant to whom he said, “Restore all that is hers, including whatever her property produced from the day she left the country until now.”

Elisha Prophesies to Hazael

Elisha went to Damascus. King Benhadad of Aram, who was sick, was told, “The man of God has come here.”

The king told Hazael, “Take a present, and meet the man of God. Ask the Lord through him, ‘Will I recover from this illness?’”

Hazael went to meet Elisha. He took with him a present and all kinds of goods from Damascus. He had loaded the goods on 40 camels. He stood in front of Elisha and said, “Your humble servant King Benhadad of Aram has sent me to you. He asks whether he will recover from this illness.”

10 Elisha replied, “Tell him that he will get better, although the Lord has shown me that he is actually going to die.” 11 He stared at him until he became embarrassed. Then the man of God began to cry.

12 “Sir, why are you crying?” Hazael asked.

Elisha answered, “I know the evil you will do to the Israelites: You will set their fortresses on fire, kill their best young men, smash their little children, and rip open their pregnant women.”

13 But Hazael asked, “How can a dog like me do such a significant thing?”

Elisha answered, “The Lord has shown me that you will become king of Aram.” 14 Hazael left Elisha and went to his master Benhadad, who asked him what Elisha had said.

Hazael answered, “He told me that you will get better.”

15 But the next day Hazael took a blanket, soaked it in water, and smothered the king with it. Hazael ruled as king in his place.

King Jehoram of Judah(A)

16 Joram (Ahab’s son) was in his fifth year as king of Israel when Jehoram,[a] son of King Jehoshaphat of Judah, began to rule. Jehoram ruled while Jehoshaphat was still king of Judah. 17 He was 32 years old when he began to rule, and he ruled for 8 years in Jerusalem. 18 He followed the ways of the kings of Israel, as Ahab’s family had done, because his wife was Ahab’s daughter. So he did what the Lord considered evil. 19 But for David’s sake the Lord didn’t want to destroy Judah. The Lord had told David that he would always give him and his descendants a shining lamp.

20 During Jehoram’s time Edom rebelled against Judah and chose its own king. 21 Jehoram took all his chariots to attack Zair. The Edomites and their chariot commanders surrounded him, but he got up at night, broke through their lines, and his troops fled home. 22 So Edom rebelled against Judah’s rule and is still independent today. At that time Libnah also rebelled. 23 Isn’t everything else about Jehoram—everything he did—written in the official records of the kings of Judah? 24 Jehoram lay down in death with his ancestors and was buried with them in the City of David. His son Ahaziah succeeded him as king.

King Ahaziah of Judah(B)

25 Joram (Ahab’s son) was in his twelfth year as king of Israel when Jehoram’s son Ahaziah became king of Judah. 26 Ahaziah was 22 years old when he began to rule, and he ruled for one year in Jerusalem. His mother was Athaliah, the granddaughter of King Omri of Israel. 27 Ahaziah followed the ways of Ahab’s family. He did what the Lord considered evil, as Ahab’s family had done, because he was related to Ahab’s family by marriage.

28 Ahaziah went with Ahab’s son Joram to fight against King Hazael of Aram at Ramoth Gilead. There the Arameans wounded Joram. 29 King Joram returned to Jezreel to let his wounds heal. (He had been wounded by the Arameans at Ramah when he fought against King Hazael of Aram.) Then Jehoram’s son Ahaziah went to Jezreel to see Ahab’s son Joram, who was sick.

Jehu Is Anointed King of Israel

The prophet Elisha called one of the disciples of the prophets. He said, “Put on your belt. Take this flask of olive oil, and go to Ramoth Gilead. When you arrive there, look for Jehu, son of Jehoshaphat and grandson of Nimshi. Go inside, and have him get up and leave his companions. Take him into an inner room. Take the flask of oil, pour it on his head, and say, ‘This is what the Lord says: I have anointed you king of Israel.’ Then open the door and leave immediately.”

The young man, the servant of the prophet, went to Ramoth Gilead. When he arrived there, the army’s generals were sitting together. He said, “I have something to tell you, General.”

Jehu asked, “Which one of us?”

He answered, “You, General!”

Jehu got up and went into the house. The prophet poured olive oil on his head and told him, “This is what the Lord God of Israel says: I have anointed you king of the Lord’s people, king of Israel. You will destroy the family of your master Ahab. I will get revenge on Jezebel for shedding the blood of my servants the prophets and all the Lord’s other servants. Ahab’s entire family will die. I will destroy every male[b] from Ahab’s family, whether slave or freeman in Israel. I will make Ahab’s family like the family of Jeroboam (Nebat’s son) and like the family of Baasha, son of Ahijah. 10 Dogs will eat Jezebel inside the walls of Jezreel, and no one will bury her.” Then he opened the door and left.

11 Jehu came out to his master’s officials. One of them asked him, “Is everything alright? Why did this lunatic come to you?”

He answered, “You know the man and the kind of things he says.”

12 They said, “That’s not an answer. Please tell us.”

Jehu replied, “We talked for a while, and he said to me, ‘This is what the Lord says: I have anointed you king of Israel.’”

13 Then each one of them immediately took off his coat and laid it on the stairs below him. They blew a ram’s horn and said, “Jehu is king!”

Footnotes:

  1. 2 Kings 8:16 In the Masoretic Text this king of Judah is also called Joram, a shorter form of Jehoram.
  2. 2 Kings 9:8 Hebrew uses a coarse term for “male” here.

Acts 16:16-40

16 One day when we were going to the place of prayer, a female servant met us. She was possessed by an evil spirit that told fortunes. She made a lot of money for her owners by telling fortunes. 17 She used to follow Paul and shout, “These men are servants of the Most High God. They’re telling you how you can be saved.” 18 She kept doing this for many days. Paul became annoyed, turned to the evil spirit, and said, “I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her!”

As Paul said this, the evil spirit left her. 19 When her owners realized that their hope of making money was gone, they grabbed Paul and Silas and dragged them to the authorities in the public square. 20 In front of the Roman officials, they said, “These men are stirring up a lot of trouble in our city. They’re Jews, 21 and they’re advocating customs that we can’t accept or practice as Roman citizens.”

22 The crowd joined in the attack against Paul and Silas. Then the officials tore the clothes off Paul and Silas and ordered the guards to beat them with sticks. 23 After they had hit Paul and Silas many times, they threw them in jail and ordered the jailer to keep them under tight security. 24 So the jailer followed these orders and put Paul and Silas into solitary confinement with their feet in leg irons.

25 Around midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns of praise to God. The other prisoners were listening to them. 26 Suddenly, a violent earthquake shook the foundations of the jail. All the doors immediately flew open, and all the prisoners’ chains came loose.

27 The jailer woke up and saw the prison doors open. Thinking the prisoners had escaped, he drew his sword and was about to kill himself. 28 But Paul shouted as loudly as he could, “Don’t hurt yourself! We’re all here!”

29 The jailer asked for torches and rushed into the jail. He was trembling as he knelt in front of Paul and Silas. 30 Then he took Paul and Silas outside and asked, “Sirs, what do I have to do to be saved?”

31 They answered, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you and your family will be saved.” 32 They spoke the Lord’s word to the jailer and everyone in his home.

33 At that hour of the night, the jailer washed Paul and Silas’ wounds. The jailer and his entire family were baptized immediately. 34 He took Paul and Silas upstairs into his home and gave them something to eat. He and his family were thrilled to be believers in God.

35 In the morning the Roman officials sent guards who told the jailer, “You can release those men now.”

36 The jailer reported this order to Paul by saying, “The officials have sent word to release you. So you can leave peacefully now.”

37 But Paul told the guards, “Roman officials have had us beaten publicly without a trial and have thrown us in jail, even though we’re Roman citizens. Now are they going to throw us out secretly? There’s no way they’re going to get away with that! Have them escort us out!”

38 The guards reported to the officials what Paul had said. When the Roman officials heard that Paul and Silas were Roman citizens, they were afraid. 39 So the officials went to the jail and apologized to Paul and Silas. As the officials escorted Paul and Silas out of the jail, they asked them to leave the city.

40 After Paul and Silas left the jail, they went to Lydia’s house. They met with the believers, encouraged them, and then left.

Psalm 143

O Lord, listen to my prayer.
Open your ears to hear my urgent requests.
Answer me because you are faithful and righteous.
Do not take me to court for judgment,
because there is no one alive
who is righteous in your presence.

The enemy has pursued me.
He has ground my life into the dirt.
He has made me live in dark places
like those who have died long ago.
That is why I begin to lose hope
and my heart is in a state of shock.

I remember the days long ago.
I reflect on all that you have done.
I carefully consider what your hands have made.
I stretch out my hands to you in prayer.
Like parched land, my soul thirsts for you. Selah

Answer me quickly, O Lord.
My spirit is worn out.
Do not hide your face from me,
or I will be like those who go into the pit.
Let me hear about your mercy in the morning,
because I trust you.
Let me know the way that I should go,
because I long for you.
Rescue me from my enemies, O Lord.
I come to you for protection.

10 Teach me to do your will, because you are my God.
May your good Spirit lead me on level ground.
11 O Lord, keep me alive for the sake of your name.
Because you are righteous, lead me out of trouble.
12 In keeping with your mercy, wipe out my enemies
and destroy all who torment me,
because I am your servant.

Psalm 144

By David.

2 Kings 6:1-7:20, Acts 15:36-16:15, Psalms 142:1-7, Proverbs 17:24-25

Today is the 24th day of June. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I’m Brian. It’s great to be here with you. And we twist the knob and open the door and step through the threshold of a shiny, sparkly, new week, which means that we’ll read from a new translation this week. We’ll read from the Gods Word Translation. And, of course, we’ll be picking up where we left off. 2 Kings, chapter 6 and 7 today.

Commentary:

Okay. So, in second Kings we had a couple of stories told today, all involving Elisha the prophet and involving the Aramaeans as they tried to intimidate and conquer Israel. So, we have the very famous story of Elisha being able to tell the king of Israel where the Aramaeans were hiding and that God is telling Elisha this and he even knows what the king says in his bedroom. So, the surround the city and there are more who are with us that are with them, Elisha says. So, it’s a very, very famous story. And without any bloodshed whatsoever, that story ends the feud between the Aramaeans and the Israelites for a while but not forever. Then King Benhadad of Aram blockades Samaria, trying to take over the capital city. And it’s gotten so bad the people are eating each other. Okay. So, that’s pretty bad. And the king plans to king Elisha over it. Elisha prophesies that things won’t be that way in 24 hours. And we know how the story goes. These leprous men go into the Aramaean camp and find it empty, and then they start hoarding things because there’s, like, an overwhelming plenty all the sudden. And there are already outcasts so they start hoarding things. And then they come back together and realize, what we are doing is not right. In fact, that’s a direct quotation from the Bible. What we’re doing is not right. This is a day of good news and we are not telling anyone about it. All of the sudden we have a story being told that has become a mirror because we know what it’s like to be isolated and walled off and surrounded by the enemy. We know what it was like to be completely lost and floundering. We look around at the world and see the bondage, the starving souls of people who are floundering, who are eating each other, metaphorically. We see all of the conflict, the spiritual starvation and it’s like we are those who leprous people. We walk out of starvation, we walk out of lack and into plenty. And then we enjoy it, start hoarding it, start building a subculture around it, but we have to realize that maybe what we’re doing is not right. This is a day of good news and we’re not telling anyone about it. The leprous people went back and got word to the king who went to investigate and restoration came to Samaria. In a spiritual sense, we’re like this. We’ve found the good news. We’ve found the hope of humanity, the rescue of the world, the restoration of all things. And maybe we hoard it more than we share that this is a day of good news. So, think about that as you move into this new week. Realize that you are carrying within yourself the hope of humanity and all that Jesus has done on our behalf. And this is good news. This is in a sales pitch. This is in a marketing ploy. This is the good news of the gospel, the hope of humanity. And we have it. And we can bring that hope and that good news to a world in bondage, starving. What’s that going to look like for you this week?

Prayer:

Father, we invite Your Holy Spirit is into that. That hits close to home and we need Your guidance and leadership in exactly how it is that we are to orient ourselves to this good news and freedom and how it is that we are to live it out in this world, being a light in this world, being the salt of the earth. Come Holy Spirit we pray. In Jesus’ name we ask. Amen.

Announcements:

dailyaudiobible.com is the website, its home base, it’s where you find out what’s up, going on around here.

Next up on the calendar is July 7th, which happens to be a Saturday this year. And that’s the day of the Daily Audio Bible long walk. It’s an annual tradition. This will be our 11th annual Daily Audio Bible long walk. And you probably get the drift. We’ve been talking about it for a few days. It’s just very simple. Circle the day on your calendar and set it aside. It’s a day for you to walk with God. Not that you’re not walking with God every day, but a day to intentionally go for a long walk, as if you have fallen in love with the Lord. And time doesn’t matter. And you have a lot to talk about because life is so busy. This is a chance to say it all and a chance to allow God to speak in response in ways that only He can. And it takes place, right here, in the middle part of the year so that we can look back, look back at all that God has spoken to us through His word this year and invite Him into what is yet to come as He continues to lead us forward. And, so, is an individual, very solitary thing. I mean, you can go with friends or whatever, you go as family. People go as couples, people go as individuals, but it’s a very individual time with God. But it’s something we’ll be doing all over the world as a community. So, wherever you go, and go somewhere beautiful, go somewhere where you can actually drink in the beauty and exquisite detail of nature. And maybe snap a picture or shoot a little video. Post that back to the Daily Audio Bible Facebook page which is Facebook.com/dailyaudiobible. And this becomes a beautiful, beautiful community thing. We get these beautiful windows into each other’s lives and it’s a lot of fun. So, make plans for that July 7th.

If you want to partner with the Daily Audio Bible you can do that dailyaudiobible.com. There is a link, it’s on the homepage. If you’re using the Daily Audio Bible app, you can press the Give button in the upper right-hand corner or, if you prefer, you can use the mailing address which is PO Box 1996 Spring Hill, Tennessee 37174.

And, as always, if you have a prayer request or comment, 877-942-4253 is the number to dial.

And that’s it for today. It’s going to be a great week. I’m Brian I love you and I’ll be waiting for here is tomorrow.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Yes. This is Beautiful Soul out of North Carolina. I call myself Beautiful Soul because God showed me that my soul was created beautiful and that I should not be down on myself and that I should not have low self-esteem about myself because He created me beautiful. He doesn’t create junk. The reason why I say this is because I heard a podcast on June 20th, a DAB member by the name of Keisha whose suffering from depression, is suffering from health issues, is suffering from family issues, and she’s suffering from being morbidly obese. I’m speaking to you directly Keisha. You touched my heart this morning. God just spoke to my Spirit because I’ve gone through the same struggles that you’ve had. And I can identify with what you’re feeling. But the thing that touched me the most about what you said was that you were ashamed to ask to help us to pray for you. Let me tell you something. In first Peter 3 and 4, God speaks about not looking it the outward appearance but looking at the inward appearance. He is in love with your soul and your heart. There’s no reason you should be ashamed to ask for help because that’s what we’re all here for and that’s what God put us here for. To pray with each other. I want you to know that you’re not alone, that there’s nothing wrong with you. No matter what you…even if you weigh…I was morbidly obese too and God helped me get the weight off. It takes three measures but God gives. It wasn’t even about the weight or if I got it off of me. It was about the way I perceived myself. And I want you to know that you are beautiful. You’re absolutely beautiful and…

Hi. My name is Sherry and I am caller from the second time and I’ve been listening to Daily Audio Bible for three years and this is the first year I have dedicated myself to listening on time. I’ve called them before as regards to the job that I hold as a social worker. God knows my heart that I no longer like this job because of the racism, the politics, the mistreatment and as one of the ladies that called in before said, it’s difficult to be in a hostile environment where racism is on the rampage. I ask for prayer that God to sustain me for the next seven months or nine months before I retire. I get up every morning and I cry. So, I’m asking for your prayers that…

And the format which allows us to consume it bit by bit and supporting prayers. So, just wanted to, just yeah, say thank you. God bless you. Bye.

Hi everyone. This is Melody from Canada. And I just heard Keisha’s call. And Keisha, you just touched my heart so much and I am really proud of you for your courage in asking for prayers about your weight. And I just really want to say that you are beautiful in God’s eyes. And you are His lovely daughter. And I just pray that you will receive that affirmation from Him and that love from Him and that He lifts you out of your depression. I struggled with depression for a time as well and I just know that the joy of the Lord is your strength and I pray blessing over you in Jesus’ name. Amen.

2 Kings 6-7

Elisha and the Floating Ax Head

The disciples of the prophets said to Elisha, “The place where we’re staying is too small for us. Let’s go to the Jordan River. Each of us can get some logs and make a place for us to live there.”

Elisha said, “Go ahead.”

Then one of the disciples asked, “Won’t you please come with us?”

Elisha answered, “I’ll go.”

So he went with them. They came to the Jordan River and began to cut down trees. As one of them was cutting down a tree, the ax head fell into the water. He cried out, “Oh no, master! It was borrowed!”

The man of God asked, “Where did it fall?” When he showed Elisha the place, Elisha cut off a piece of wood. He threw it into the water at that place and made the ax head float. Elisha said, “Pick it up.” The disciple reached for it and picked it up.

The Aramean Army Is Struck with Blindness

Whenever the king of Aram was fighting against Israel, he asked for advice from his officers about where they were to camp.

So the man of God would send a message to the king of Israel, “Be careful not to go by that place. The Arameans are hiding there.” 10 Then the king of Israel would send someone to the place that the man of God told him about. Elisha warned them so that they would be on their guard. He did this repeatedly.

11 The king of Aram was very angry about this. He called his officers and asked them, “Won’t you tell me who among us is a spy for the king of Israel?”

12 One of his officers answered, “No one, Your Majesty. Elisha, the prophet in Israel, tells the king of Israel everything you say—even what you say in your bedroom.”

13 The king said, “Find out where he is. Then I will send men to capture him.”

The king was told, “He is in Dothan.” 14 So the king sent horses and chariots and a large fighting unit there. They came at night and surrounded the city.

15 When the servant of the man of God got up in the morning and went outside, he saw troops, horses, and chariots surrounding the city. Elisha’s servant asked, “Master, what should we do?”

16 Elisha answered, “Don’t be afraid. We have more forces on our side than they have on theirs.” 17 Then Elisha prayed, “Lord, please open his eyes so that he may see.” The Lord opened the servant’s eyes and let him see. The mountain around Elisha was full of fiery horses and chariots.

18 As the Arameans came down to get him, Elisha prayed to the Lord, “Please strike these people with blindness.” The Lord struck them with blindness, as Elisha had asked. 19 Elisha told them, “This isn’t the way! This isn’t the city. Follow me, and I will lead you to the man you’re looking for.” So he led them into Samaria. 20 When they came into Samaria, Elisha said, “Lord, open the eyes of these men, and let them see.” The Lord opened their eyes and let them see that they were in the middle of Samaria.

21 When the king of Israel saw them, he asked Elisha, “Master, should I kill them? Should I kill them?”

22 Elisha answered, “Don’t kill them. Do you kill everyone you take captive in combat? Give them food and water. Let them eat and drink. Then let them go back to their master.”

23 So the king prepared a great feast for them. They ate and drank, and then he sent them back to their master. After this, Aramean troops didn’t raid Israel’s territory anymore.

The Aramean Army Blockades Samaria

24 Later King Benhadad of Aram assembled his whole army. They went to Samaria and blockaded it. 25 The shortages caused by the blockade of Samaria became so severe that a donkey’s head sold for two pounds of silver and a half-pint of dove[a] manure for two ounces of silver.

26 As the king of Israel was walking on the city wall, a woman cried to him, “Help me, Your Majesty!”

27 He answered, “If the Lord doesn’t help you, how can I help you? I can’t give you something from the threshing floor[b] or the winepress.” 28 Then the king asked her, “What’s the matter?”

She answered, “This woman told me, ‘Give up your son. Let’s eat him today. We’ll eat my son tomorrow.’ 29 So we boiled my son and ate him. The next day I told her, ‘Give up your son. We’ll eat him,’ but she hid her son.”

30 When the king heard the woman say this, he tore his clothes in distress. As he was walking on the city wall, the people saw that he was wearing sackcloth under his clothes. 31 He said, “May God strike me dead if the head of Elisha, son of Shaphat, stays on his body today.”

32 Elisha was sitting in his home with the city’s leaders. The king had sent one of his men ahead of him to Elisha’s house. But before the messenger arrived, Elisha asked the leaders, “Do you see how this murderer has sent someone to tear off my head? When the messenger comes, close the door. Hold it shut because the king will be following him.”

33 While he was still talking to them, the messenger arrived. He said to Elisha, “This severe famine is from the Lord. Why should I wait any longer for the Lord to help us?”

Elisha answered, “Listen to the Lord’s word! This is what the Lord says: About this time tomorrow 24 cups of the best flour will sell for half an ounce of silver in the gateway to Samaria. And 48 cups of barley will sell for half an ounce of silver.”

The servant on whose arm the king was leaning answered the man of God, “Could this happen even if the Lord poured rain through windows in the sky?”

Elisha replied, “You will see it with your own eyes, but you won’t eat any of it.”

The Aramean Army Flees

Four men with skin diseases were at the entrance of the city gate. One of them asked, “Why are we sitting here waiting to die? If we go into the city, the famine is also there, and we’ll still die. But if we stay here, we’ll die. So let’s go to the Aramean camp. If they give us something to keep us alive, we’ll live. But if they kill us, we’ll die anyway.” So they started out at dusk to go into the Aramean camp. When they came to the edge of the camp, no one was there.

(The Lord had made the Aramean army hear what sounded like chariots, horses, and a large army. The Aramean soldiers said to one another, “The king of Israel has hired the Hittite and Egyptian kings to attack us!” So at dusk they fled. They abandoned the camp as it was with its tents, horses, and donkeys and ran for their lives.)

When the men with skin diseases came to the edge of the camp, they went into a tent, ate and drank, and carried off the silver, gold, and clothes they found in that tent. They went away and hid them. Then they came back, went into another tent, carried off its contents, went away, and hid them.

Then they said to one another, “What we’re doing is not right. This is a day of good news, and we’re not telling anyone about it. If we wait until morning when it’s light out, we’ll be punished. Let’s bring the news to the royal palace.” 10 So they called the city gatekeepers and told them, “We went into the Aramean camp, and we didn’t see or hear anyone. The horses and donkeys were still tied up. Even the tents were left exactly as they were.”

11 The gatekeepers announced the news to the royal palace. 12 So the king got up at night and told his officers what the Arameans had planned for them. He said, “They know we’re starving, so they’ve left the camp to hide in the countryside. They’re thinking, ‘When they’ve left the city, we’ll capture them alive and get into the city.’”

13 One of his officers replied, “Please let some men take five of the horses that are left here. Those men will be no worse off than the rest of the Israelites who are dying. Let’s send them to take a look.” 14 So they took two chariots with horses, and the king sent them to follow the Aramean army and told them to find out what happened. 15 They followed them as far as the Jordan River and saw how the whole road was littered with clothes and equipment that the Arameans had thrown away in their hurry. The messengers returned and told the king about it.

16 So the people went out and looted the Aramean camp. Then 24 cups of the best flour sold for half an ounce of silver, and 48 cups of barley sold for half an ounce of silver, as the Lord had predicted.

17 The king appointed the servant on whose arm he used to lean to be in charge of the gate. But the people trampled him to death in the gateway, as the man of God had predicted when the king came to him. 18 (It happened exactly as the man of God told the king, “48 cups of barley will sell for half an ounce of silver. And 24 cups of the best flour will sell for half an ounce of silver. This will happen about this time tomorrow in the gateway to Samaria.” 19 Then the servant answered the man of God, “Could this happen even if the Lord poured rain through windows in the sky?” Elisha answered, “You will see it with your own eyes, but you won’t eat any of it.”) 20 So this is what happened to the king’s servant: The people trampled him to death in the gateway.

Acts 15:36-16:15

Paul and Barnabas Disagree

36 After a while Paul said to Barnabas, “Let’s go back to every city where we spread the Lord’s word. We’ll visit the believers to see how they’re doing.”

37 Barnabas wanted to take John Mark along. 38 However, Paul didn’t think it was right to take a person like him along. John Mark had deserted them in Pamphylia and had not gone with them to work. 39 Paul and Barnabas disagreed so sharply that they parted ways. Barnabas took Mark with him and sailed to the island of Cyprus. 40 Paul chose Silas and left after the believers entrusted him to the Lord’s care.[a]

41 Paul went through the provinces of Syria and Cilicia and strengthened the churches.

Timothy Joins Paul in Lystra

16 Paul arrived in the city of Derbe and then went to Lystra, where a disciple named Timothy lived. Timothy’s mother was a Jewish believer, but his father was Greek. The believers in Lystra and Iconium spoke well of Timothy. Paul wanted Timothy to go with him. So he circumcised him because of the Jews who lived in those places and because he knew that Timothy’s father was Greek.

As they went through the cities, they told people about the decisions that the apostles and spiritual leaders[b] in Jerusalem had made for the people. So the churches were strengthened in the faith and grew in numbers every day.

Paul Has a Vision

Paul and Silas went through the regions of Phrygia and Galatia because the Holy Spirit kept them from speaking the word in the province of Asia. They went to the province of Mysia and tried to enter Bithynia, but the Spirit of Jesus wouldn’t allow this. So they passed by Mysia and went to the city of Troas.

During the night Paul had a vision of a man from Macedonia. The man urged Paul, “Come to Macedonia to help us.”

10 As soon as Paul had seen the vision, we immediately looked for a way to go to Macedonia. We concluded that God had called us to tell the people of Macedonia about the Good News.

Paul and Silas in Philippi

11 So we took a ship from Troas and sailed straight to the island of Samothrace. The next day we sailed to the city of Neapolis, 12 and from there we went to the city of Philippi. Philippi is a leading city in that part of Macedonia, and it is a Roman colony. We were in this city for a number of days.

13 On the day of rest—a holy day we went out of the city to a place along the river where we thought Jewish people gathered for prayer. We sat down and began talking to the women who had gathered there. 14 A woman named Lydia was present. She was a convert to Judaism from the city of Thyatira and sold purple dye for a living. She was listening because the Lord made her willing to pay attention to what Paul said. 15 When Lydia and her family were baptized, she invited us to stay at her home. She said, “If you’re convinced that I believe in the Lord, then stay at my home.” She insisted. So we did.

Psalm 142

Psalm 142

A maskil[a] by David when he was in the cave; a prayer.

Loudly, I cry to the Lord.
Loudly, I plead with the Lord for mercy.
I pour out my complaints in his presence
and tell him my troubles.
When I begin to lose hope,
you already know what I am experiencing.

My enemies have hidden a trap for me on the path where I walk.
Look to my right and see that no one notices me.
Escape is impossible for me.
No one cares about me.

I call out to you, O Lord.
I say, “You are my refuge,
my own inheritance in this world of the living.”
Pay attention to my cry for help
because I am very weak.
Rescue me from those who pursue me
because they are too strong for me.
Release my soul from prison
so that I may give thanks to your name.
Righteous people will surround me
because you are good to me.

Psalm 143

A psalm by David.

2 Kings 4:18-5:27, Acts 15:1-31, Psalms 141:1-10, Proverbs 17:23

Today is the 23rd day of June. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I am Brian. And here we are, heading toward the end of another week. And they just keep rolling along. It’s getting steamy here in the rolling hills of Tennessee. Our summers are lush and beautiful and rich and green and lovely and humid and steamy and hot. Went outside the other day to do a little work and it was 101 degrees and like a sauna and I was like, O my gosh. But that’s how our summers are and they are hot but they’re beautiful. And I hope it’s beautiful wherever you are. I know some of you are putting on your winter coats down under and experience wintertime, which is so interesting. But I digress. Let’s dive into the Scriptures today. We’re reading from the Contemporary English Version this week, which is today. 2 Kings 4:18-5:27.

Commentary:

Okay. A couple things we should probably talk about. In the book of 2 Kings, we have the story of Naaman, the Syrian general, the military commander. And it’s an interesting story. He has leprosy, right? The king of Syria sends a letter to the king of Israel who’s freaked out because how’s he gonna cure leprosy? We just read the whole story. What’s interesting about this story is how Naaman responds to Elijah. And for that matter, how Elijah responds to Naaman. When Naaman makes the journey all the way to Elijah’s house, Elijah doesn’t even come out to say hello. He just sends word- here’s what you need to do. Real quick and efficient, you don’t need any incantations, you don’t need any magic spells. Just go wash in the Jordan, dip yourself seven times and your will be healed. Naaman is angry about this, right? So here is a guy that is dying of leprosy very slowly but is also a very powerful man. And he’s been given simple instructions when he was expecting something other than what he got. And, so, he was mad as opposed to thinking, well, this is what the prophet said, this is what this little servant girl said. This is that prophet and this is what he said to do. He’s kind of mad. It’s like, I could have dipped in any of the rivers in Syria. It’s his servants who will bring him back to his right mind. And they say, Listen, if Elijah had told you to do something difficult you would have done it, so why not do the easy thing? That’s when things become a bit of a mirror because we have a tendency to dramatically overcomplicate things in our lives a lot of the time when the simple instructions in the Scripture are to obey and walk with God, right? To be in collaboration with him in our lives. To open ourselves to his presence in everything that we do and say. And sometimes we think it’s about the hoops that we can jump through. How hard can this be? Like the harder I have to work to do something, the more God will notice. The more that I press in, the more that he will notice when he’s not going to really be paying attention to the hoops. He’s going to be paying attention to the heart. So Naaman decided, I’ve come a long way, it’s been a long journey. What do I have to lose by jumping into the Jordan? And what he got was his health back. So, when we think about the hoops that we need to jump through or the flags that we need to wave or the jumping up and down that we need to do to get God’s attention, he already knows.  And so maybe the hoops and the jumping up and down are us getting our own attention. And maybe what we need to realize is God’s presence is always available. There is nowhere we can run from God presence according to the book of Psalms. So maybe rather than the anxieties and all the things that we put ourselves through, maybe stillness, maybe slowing down, being still and knowing that He is God and walking with him in the invitation that we have to collaborate in life with him and to be his child and to focus our attention and our affection on him. Maybe it’s easier than we’re making it.

Then we get into the book of Acts. And we see this council that takes place. And this is known as the Jerusalem Council.  And it’s really the first recorded council of the church.  And the issue was the initiation of a believer.  How does a person become accepted into the faith?  And the problem was the earliest of early believers felt like faith in Jesus was completely in a Jewish context because it had only ever been in a Jewish context until the Holy Spirit began to flow among the Gentile people. So, this caused a bit of a theological mess.  These people had been trying to follow the Mosaic law, that’s what they had been raised in.  This is part of their culture, part of their understanding. And even Pharisees like Paul had converted to following Jesus, but they wanted to retain all of what they had always known, specifically the law. The problem was that even those who had been raised under the law and trying to be obedient to the law couldn’t obey the law. So, the question than became how will we even begin to teach the context of all of this to a Gentile person who doesn’t know anything about it at all? Are they really required to essentially convert to the Jewish faith so that they can then put their faith in Jesus? And this is a pretty big deal. Big enough deal to have the first ever church council. And what was decided was that God had begun to pour his Holy Spirit out upon the Gentiles without them having any knowledge of the law, so what’s the point in getting in God’s way? Which sounds nice and easy but is a big deal at this point in time. And we’ve talked about this before and we’ll talk about it again because as we move deeper into the letters of Paul, we’re going to see that not everyone was on board with this. So those with an opposing view would visit some of the churches that had been established by the Apostle Paul and then teach essentially another doctrine, the doctrine that would compel a person to come under the Mosaic law and essentially become of the Jewish faith, convert to the Jewish faith. Paul stands vigorously against this. And it will come up over and over in his letters. And I bring this up when we encounter it just to keep ourselves rooted in what’s really going on and the struggle that the early church has to adapt to this new thing that God was doing in the world. Because we can think of the early church as a handful of believers in an upper room singing Kumbaya and there was a lot more to it than that. They had to deeply wrestle with and struggle through and find God’s leading in the way forward, just like we do.

Prayer:

Father, we thank You for Your Word. We thank You that there’s context and history included so that we can see how things moved and how You moved things along that brought us to where we are today, and we thank You for that. And we understand that we’re still being pulled forward. You are still inviting us forward into the full plan, the complete restoration of all things and have invited us to be a part of that story. And, so, we are grateful. We are grateful for the stories of those who have gone before, and we are grateful for that story that we are telling now. Come, Holy Spirit, we pray. In Jesus name we ask. Amen.

Announcements:

dailyaudiobible.com is the website, its home base, it’s where you find out what’s going on around here.

I’ve been mentioning for a couple of days the upcoming Daily Audio Bible Long Walk. It’s the 11th annual Daily Audio Bible Long Walk. It takes place on the 7th of July. And if you’ve been gone for a few days and you’re like, what’s the long walk, it’s exactly like what its name says. It is a day that as a community we circle on our calendars and do everything that we can to carve out the whole -as much of the day as we can get - and give it to God and go for a long walk. The kind of walk that you go on when you first fall in love. The kind of walk where you can walk for hours and it seems like minutes, like time is standing still. And you feel that intimacy growing in your love. That’s what we’re talking about. Because life is very busy. I bet every single person who’s listening to me right now has a pretty busy life. There’s all kinds of distractions everywhere, and so we don’t ever take the time or make the time, actually consider it a priority, to have that kind of fellowship where we can have a long, extended, uninterrupted conversation. That’s what the long walk’s about. It’s right in the center of the year, so we have the opportunity to reflect back on the first six months of the year, what God has spoken to us through his Word, what he has led us into because of his word, and so we can look back at that, have a long conversation about that. But then we have another half of the year to go. And it’s important to reset, to look at where our hope lies right now. What is our hope in, especially this year of hope. What is it that we have put our hope in and where is that leading us and what adjustments do we need to make as we move forward into the back half of the year? So, circle it on your calendar. July 7, which happens to be a Saturday this year. So, it’s pretty simple. And then make plans. What are you gonna do? People drive hours to beautiful places that are significant. Other people just go walking down the street. Maybe go to the lake. Maybe go to a park. Just go somewhere beautiful. Somewhere where you can actually hear nature speak and look at the extravagant detail of God’s creation and be reminded that we’re part of something big. And then just enter into the silence and then begin to (say) out what you need to say. Take the time to say everything that you’ve needed to say and make space for God to be able to speak back everything that he’s been trying to get your attention about for months. This is that time. So, it’s an individual endeavor for sure and it’ll be happening all over the world for sure, but it’s something that we do together because we’re doing it at the same time on the same day. So, wherever you go, find something beautiful, some place beautiful. And while you’re on your long walk, make sure you take a little video or snap a picture, post it up to the Daily Audio Bible Facebook page, which is facebook.com/dailyaudiobible. And that becomes a beautiful mosaic. All kinds of little windows into each other’s lives. And, so, by the end of the long walk, you’ll scroll back through all of those photos and videos and go all around the world. It’s a remarkable thing that we have as a tradition here. So, make that a part of your plans. July 7th is coming up.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Good morning guys. This is Jan in SoCal, a.k.a. prayer warrior Princess. I’m calling because today is Tuesday, June 19th and I heard, I Can See, in North Carolina call in with your prayer request. Your daughter has SPD and your husband just returned home from deployment and you are traveling Sunday together to a specialist. And that definitely rang my bell and I’ll be praying for you. Yeah, so that hits close to home. So, as I prayed for you, these things first came up. And, obviously, as I said, I will continue to cover you just as you have not forsaken your daughter in her suffering He, the Lord, your Father, will not forsake you in yours. His truth is your shield and He promises to shelter you under His wings near quiet waters at the table with Him in the presence of your enemies. I bless you with peace and rest, with a quiet heart, and a quiet mind. I bless you with love, with hope, not in resolution to your current circumstance, but in Christ alone. I bless you with the presence of the Lord because He promises that. And I’ll keep praying for you sister. I love you.

Hi everybody. It’s Margo from Australia. I was just really prompted to call in today to share something. I was thinking about the lady who called in a few weeks ago who’s a single mom and not really finding any joy in it. And I thought perhaps a little story of mine might help and perhaps for all the young moms out there. Many years ago, when my children were little we’d been living in Amerland in the very north of Australia and it’s very, very isolated as a regional community. And my husband was flying with the mission aviation on a ship. And we were there as missionaries. And at the time my children were young. So, I was stuck at home with them quite a lot. And I couldn’t get out and do, you know, what I saw as the work of the Lord and be a real proper missionary out there amongst the __ regionals because a lot of my time was spent at home with my children. And one day I was at a little local regional church and we found a room at the back that had been locked up for many years and we decided to open it up and clean it up and use it as a Sunday school room. And I remember I was out in that room and it was an absolute filthy mess and I was sweeping and mopping, and I stood there, and I said to the Lord, gee, this finally feels like I’m doing something really like a proper missionary. I’m getting down and dirty and fixing up this room. And clear is anything, the Lord spoke into my heart, Margo that’s exactly how I feel about you every day as you mop out your children. And that really encouraged me at the time. And I hope that it encourages you young moms out there. And especially the single mom that rang in a few weeks ago. As we mop up our children, that is our mission. It is the most important job in the world and God bless you for doing it. He loves your children and He has given them to you as a very, very special and important mission. I hope that encourages you today. Love you all. Bye.

Good day my Daily Audio Bible family. This is Ozzie J. calling from Japan. I’m not sure how many of you are aware, but on Monday morning at 7:58, Japan time, a 6.1 Richter scale earthquake struck and it was only 11 km away from where I live. Yet, we’re okay. We didn’t suffer too much damage here, just a few things got knocked off some shelves at our house, but fortunately they landed on the soft Khatami floor. So, they didn’t break or anything. So, we’re okay. Unfortunately, closer to the epicenter, five people have been killed certainly that they know of so far. And, yeah, I’ve seen some photos from people I’ve connected with on twitter that live closer to there of some pretty big damage around those areas, closer to the earthquake Center. And, yeah, everybody here is worried about that this might trigger a bigger quake. So, please pray that that doesn’t happen. Please pray for us here in Japan as we recover from this earthquake. Thank you, my Daily Audio Bible.

This is Michael from North Georgia. This is my second time calling in I’ve been listening to the Daily Audio Bible for, this is my second year. And I would first like to say, quickly, just how much this has changed my life, that I know now that I’m not in this alone. And it has, in more than one way, the Daily Audio Bible has completely turned around my entire life. It has changed me, and I will never be the same as I was because of Christ and because of this and the way that ya’ll are just able to reach other and through prayer and able to touch each one of our lives, the way we’re able to pray for each other and help each other and it keeps us connected. And I just thank and praise God every day. I look forward to every reading. I just got done listening to the June 20th, that’s what today is. And the reason I’m calling in, quickly, is my wife has been struggling with something that is wrong with her. She has a physical condition. The doctors have no idea what it is. She’s coughing up and spitting up blood clots. That’s been going on for about eight or nine months now. And they have yet to be able to get to the bottom of what the problem is. She’s in the hospital with pneumonia right now in North Georgia for the second time in three months. And they figured out she has a heart condition that she was born with that no one knew she had until about a month ago. One doctor, the heart doctor says that’s not the reason why she’s coughing up and spitting up blood and getting pneumonia. And the lung doctor is dealing with the heart doctor saying it is the reason and they can’t get on the same page and no one really seems to know is wrong with her. And, so, I’m calling in because I want as many people around the world to pray for her. Her name is Sandy. She loves God. She’s saved. And she’s just such a little humble…

The Daily Audio Bible Reading for Saturday June 23, 2018 (NIV)

2 Kings 4:18-5:27

18 One day while the boy was still young, he was out in the fields with his father, where the workers were harvesting the crops. 19 Suddenly he shouted, “My head hurts. It hurts a lot!”

“Carry him back to his mother,” the father said to his servant. 20 The servant picked up the boy and carried him to his mother. The boy lay on her lap all morning, and by noon he was dead. 21 She carried him upstairs to Elisha’s room and laid him across the bed. Then she walked out and shut the door behind her.

22 The woman called to her husband, “I need to see the prophet. Let me use one of the donkeys. Send a servant along with me, and let me leave now, so I can get back quickly.”

23 “Why do you need to see him today?” her husband asked. “It’s not the Sabbath or time for the New Moon Festival.”

“That’s all right,” she answered. 24 She saddled the donkey and said to her servant, “Let’s go. And don’t slow down unless I tell you to.” 25 She left at once for Mount Carmel to talk with Elisha.[a]

When Elisha saw her coming, he said, “Gehazi, look! It’s the woman from Shunem. 26 Run and meet her. And ask her if everything is all right with her and her family.”

“Everything is fine,” she answered Gehazi. 27 But as soon as she got to the top of the mountain, she went over and grabbed Elisha by the feet.

Gehazi started toward her to push her away, when Elisha said, “Leave her alone! Don’t you see how sad she is? But the Lord hasn’t told me why.”

28 The woman said, “Sir, I begged you not to get my hopes up, and I didn’t even ask you for a son.”

29 “Gehazi, get ready and go to her house,” Elisha said. “Take along my walking stick, and when you get there, lay it on the boy’s face. Don’t stop to talk to anyone, even if they try to talk to you.”

30 But the boy’s mother said to Elisha, “I swear by the living Lord and by your own life that I won’t leave without you.” So Elisha got up and went with them.

31 Gehazi ran on ahead and laid Elisha’s walking stick on the boy’s face, but the boy didn’t move or make a sound. Gehazi ran back to Elisha and said, “The boy didn’t wake up.”

32 Elisha arrived at the woman’s house and went straight to his room, where he saw the boy’s body on his bed. 33 He walked in, shut the door, and prayed to the Lord. 34 Then he got on the bed and stretched out over the dead body, with his mouth on the boy’s mouth, his eyes on his eyes, and his hand on his hands. As he lay there, the boy’s body became warm. 35 Elisha got up and walked back and forth in the room, then he went back and leaned over the boy’s body. The boy sneezed seven times and opened his eyes.

36 Elisha called out to Gehazi, “Have the boy’s mother come here.” Gehazi did, and when she was at the door, Elisha said, “You can take your son.”

37 She came in and bowed down at Elisha’s feet. Then she picked up her son and left.

Elisha Makes Some Stew Taste Better

38 Later, Elisha went back to Gilgal, where there was almost nothing to eat, because the crops had failed.

One day while the prophets who lived there were meeting with Elisha, he said to his servant, “Fix a big pot of stew for these prophets.”

39 One of them went out into the woods to gather some herbs. He found a wild vine and picked as much of its fruit as he could carry, but he didn’t know that the fruit was very sour. When he got back, he cut up the fruit and put it in the stew.

40 The stew was served, and when the prophets started eating it, they shouted, “Elisha, this stew tastes terrible! We can’t eat it.”

41 “Bring me some flour,” Elisha said. He sprinkled the flour in the stew and said, “Now serve it to them.” And the stew tasted fine.

Elisha Feeds One Hundred People

42 A man from the town of Baal-Shalishah[b] brought Elisha some freshly cut grain and twenty loaves of bread made from the first barley that was harvested. Elisha said, “Give it to the people so they can eat.”

43 “There’s not enough here for a hundred people,” his servant said.

“Just give it to them,” Elisha replied. “The Lord has promised there will be more than enough.”

44 So the servant served the bread and grain to the people. They ate and still had some left over, just as the Lord had promised.

Elisha Heals Naaman

Naaman was the commander of the Syrian army. The Lord had helped him and his troops defeat their enemies, so the king of Syria respected Naaman very much. Naaman was a brave soldier, but he had leprosy.[c]

One day while the Syrian troops were raiding Israel, they captured a girl, and she became a servant of Naaman’s wife. Some time later the girl said, “If your husband Naaman would go to the prophet in Samaria, he would be cured of his leprosy.”

When Naaman told the king what the girl had said, the king replied, “Go ahead! I will give you a letter to take to the king of Israel.”

Naaman left and took along seven hundred fifty pounds of silver, one hundred fifty pounds of gold, and ten new outfits. He also carried the letter to the king of Israel. It said, “I am sending my servant Naaman to you. Would you cure him of his leprosy?”

When the king of Israel read the letter, he tore his clothes in fear and shouted, “That Syrian king believes I can cure this man of leprosy! Does he think I’m God with power over life and death? He must be trying to pick a fight with me.”

As soon as Elisha the prophet[d] heard what had happened, he sent the Israelite king this message: “Why are you so afraid? Send the man to me, so that he will know there is a prophet in Israel.”

Naaman left with his horses and chariots and stopped at the door of Elisha’s house. 10 Elisha sent someone outside to say to him, “Go wash seven times in the Jordan River. Then you’ll be completely cured.”

11 But Naaman stormed off, grumbling, “Why couldn’t he come out and talk to me? I thought for sure he would stand in front of me and pray to the Lord his God, then wave his hand over my skin and cure me. 12 What about the Abana River[e] or the Pharpar River? Those rivers in Damascus are just as good as any river in Israel. I could have washed in them and been cured.”

13 His servants went over to him and said, “Sir, if the prophet had told you to do something difficult, you would have done it. So why don’t you do what he said? Go wash and be cured.”

14 Naaman walked down to the Jordan; he waded out into the water and stooped down in it seven times, just as Elisha had told him. Right away, he was cured, and his skin became as smooth as a child’s.

15 Naaman and his officials went back to Elisha. Naaman stood in front of him and announced, “Now I know that the God of Israel is the only God in the whole world. Sir, would you please accept a gift from me?”

16 “I am a servant of the living Lord,” Elisha answered, “and I swear that I will not take anything from you.”

Naaman kept begging, but Elisha kept refusing. 17 Finally Naaman said, “If you won’t accept a gift, then please let me take home as much soil as two mules can pull in a wagon. Sir, from now on I will offer sacrifices only to the Lord.[f] 18 But I pray that the Lord will forgive me when I go into the temple of the god Rimmon and bow down there with the king of Syria.”

19 “Go on home, and don’t worry about that,” Elisha replied. Then Naaman left.

Elisha Places a Curse on Gehazi

After Naaman had gone only a short distance, 20 Gehazi said to himself, “Elisha let that Syrian off too easy. He should have taken Naaman’s gift. I swear by the living Lord that I will talk to Naaman myself and get something from him.” 21 So he hurried after Naaman.

When Naaman saw Gehazi running after him, he got out of his chariot to meet him. Naaman asked, “Is everything all right?”

22 “Yes,” Gehazi answered. “But my master has sent me to tell you about two young prophets from the hills of Ephraim. They came asking for help, and now Elisha wants to know if you would give them about seventy-five pounds of silver and some new clothes?”

23 “Sure,” Naaman replied. “But why don’t you take twice that amount of silver?” He convinced Gehazi to take it all, then put the silver in two bags. He handed the bags and the clothes to his two servants, and they carried them for Gehazi.

24 When they reached the hill where Gehazi lived, he took the bags from the servants and placed them in his house, then sent the men away. After they had gone, 25 Gehazi went in and stood in front of Elisha, who asked, “Gehazi, where have you been?”

“Nowhere, sir,” Gehazi answered.

26 Elisha asked, “Don’t you know that my spirit was there when Naaman got out of his chariot to talk with you? Gehazi, you have no right to accept money or clothes, olive orchards or vineyards, sheep or cattle, or servants. 27 Because of what you’ve done, Naaman’s leprosy[g] will now be on you and your descendants forever!”

Suddenly, Gehazi’s skin became white with leprosy, and he left.

Acts 15:1-35

15 Some people came from Judea and started teaching the Lord’s followers that they could not be saved, unless they were circumcised as Moses had taught. This caused trouble, and Paul and Barnabas argued with them about this teaching. So it was decided to send Paul and Barnabas and a few others to Jerusalem to discuss this problem with the apostles and the church leaders.

The Church Leaders Meet in Jerusalem

The men who were sent by the church went through Phoenicia and Samaria, telling how the Gentiles had turned to God. This news made the Lord’s followers very happy. When the men arrived in Jerusalem, they were welcomed by the church, including the apostles and the leaders. They told them everything God had helped them do. But some Pharisees had become followers of the Lord. They stood up and said, “Gentiles who have faith in the Lord must be circumcised and told to obey the Law of Moses.”

The apostles and church leaders met to discuss this problem about Gentiles. They had talked it over for a long time, when Peter got up and said:

My friends, you know that God decided long ago to let me be the one from your group to preach the good news to the Gentiles. God did this so that they would hear and obey him. He knows what is in everyone’s heart. And he showed that he had chosen the Gentiles, when he gave them the Holy Spirit, just as he had given his Spirit to us. God treated them in the same way that he treated us. They put their faith in him, and he made their hearts pure.

10 Now why are you trying to make God angry by placing a heavy burden on these followers? This burden was too heavy for us or our ancestors. 11 But our Lord Jesus was kind to us, and we are saved by faith in him, just as the Gentiles are.

12 Everyone kept quiet and listened as Barnabas and Paul told how God had given them the power to work a lot of miracles and wonders for the Gentiles.

13 After they had finished speaking, James[a] said:

My friends, listen to me! 14 Simon Peter[b] has told how God first came to the Gentiles and made some of them his own people. 15 This agrees with what the prophets wrote,

16 “I, the Lord, will return
and rebuild
David’s fallen house.
I will build it from its ruins
and set it up again.
17 Then other nations
will turn to me
and be my chosen ones.
I, the Lord, say this.
18 I promised it long ago.”

19 And so, my friends, I don’t think we should place burdens on the Gentiles who are turning to God. 20 We should simply write and tell them not to eat anything that has been offered to idols. They should be told not to eat the meat of any animal that has been strangled or that still has blood in it. They must also not commit any terrible sexual sins.[c]

21 We must remember that the Law of Moses has been preached in city after city for many years, and every Sabbath it is read when we Jews meet.

A Letter to Gentiles Who Had Faith in the Lord

22 The apostles, the leaders, and all the church members decided to send some men to Antioch along with Paul and Barnabas. They chose Silas and Judas Barsabbas,[d] who were two leaders of the Lord’s followers. 23 They wrote a letter that said:

We apostles and leaders send friendly greetings to all of you Gentiles who are followers of the Lord in Antioch, Syria, and Cilicia.

24 We have heard that some people from here have terribly upset you by what they said. But we did not send them! 25 So we met together and decided to choose some men and to send them to you along with our good friends Barnabas and Paul. 26 These men have risked their lives for our Lord Jesus Christ. 27 We are also sending Judas and Silas, who will tell you in person the same things that we are writing.

28 The Holy Spirit has shown us that we should not place any extra burden on you. 29 But you should not eat anything offered to idols. You should not eat any meat that still has the blood in it or any meat of any animal that has been strangled. You must also not commit any terrible sexual sins. If you follow these instructions, you will do well.

We send our best wishes.

30 The four men left Jerusalem and went to Antioch. Then they called the church members together and gave them the letter. 31 When the letter was read, everyone was pleased and greatly encouraged. 32 Judas and Silas were prophets, and they spoke a long time, encouraging and helping the Lord’s followers.

33 The men from Jerusalem stayed on in Antioch for a while. And when they left to return to the ones who had sent them, the followers wished them well. 34-35 But Paul and Barnabas stayed on in Antioch, where they and many others taught and preached about the Lord.[e]

Footnotes:

  1. 15.13 James: The Lord’s brother.
  2. 15.14 Simon Peter: The Greek text has “Simeon,” which is another form of the name “Simon.” The apostle Peter is meant.
  3. 15.20 not commit any terrible sexual sins: This probably refers to the laws about the wrong kind of marriages that are forbidden in Leviticus 18.6-18 or to some serious sexual sin.
  4. 15.22 Judas Barsabbas: He may have been a brother of Joseph Barsabbas (see 1.23), but the name “Barsabbas” was often used by the Jewish people.
  5. 15.34,35 Verse 34, which says that Silas decided to stay on in Antioch, is not in some manuscripts.

A Prayer for the Lord’s Protection

141 I pray to you, Lord!
Please listen when I pray
and hurry to help me.
Think of my prayer
as sweet-smelling incense,
and think of my lifted hands
as an evening sacrifice.

Help me to guard my words
whenever I say something.
Don’t let me want to do evil
or waste my time doing wrong
with wicked people.
Don’t let me even taste
the good things they offer.

Let your faithful people
correct and punish me.
My prayers condemn the deeds
of those who do wrong,
so don’t let me be friends
with any of them.
Everyone will admit
that I was right
when their rulers are thrown
down a rocky cliff,
and their bones lie scattered
like broken rocks
on top of a grave.[a]

You are my Lord and God,
and I look to you for safety.
Don’t let me be harmed.
Protect me from the traps
of those violent people,
10 and make them fall
into their own traps
while you help me escape.

2 Kings 3:1-4:17, Acts 14:8-28, Psalms 140:1-13, Proverbs 17:22

Today is the 22nd day of June. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I’m Brian. It is a pleasure and a joy to be here with you today as we center ourselves in God’s word and allow it to wash into and over our lives. So, we began the book of 2 Kings yesterday and transitioned between the prophet Elijah and Elisha as we continue forward in the annals of the kings and the generations of the kings of Israel. So, we’re reading from the Contemporary English Version this week. 2 Kings chapter 3 verse 1 through 4, verse 17 today.

Commentary:

Okay. So, in the book of Acts we’re watching now as the apostle Paul becomes more of a prominent figure in the book of Acts. And we’re watching his journeys and travels and what we should notice both in Peter’s life and in Paul’s life, which are two, kind of, the main figures that are featured in the book of Acts, everywhere they go, everywhere that they share the gospel, it is a disruptive thing. It shakes things up. It causes a reaction in people. So, for example, just today Paul is preaching in Lystra. He makes eye contact with this person in the audience who can’t walk, but he sees that this man has faith and he calls it out and the man can walk and everybody…I mean…Paul’s preaching the gospel…and then God comes for this man and everybody wants to sacrifice to Paul and Barnabas as if they are God’s. And barely before they can stop the people from like sacrificing to them as God’s, other Jewish people have come from other towns and the crowd turns against them, and then rather than sacrificing a bull to Paul as a God, they stone Paul and leave him for dead. That’s how disruptive the gospel can be. And we watched all this happen in Jesus ministry as well. And normally, if we do think about these things, we just think about the authority of the gospel and that we’re carrying that along with us into our lives and into the discussions that we might have. But have we ever stopped and thought, is the gospel still disrupting me? Does it still shake things up in me? Does it still bring up the things that need to be brought up in me? Does it still confront me in the same way? Does it pull me deeper into intimacy and union with God or has a become a relic, something that I just do, something that I just kind of am? According to the apostle, Paul, and we’ll see this over and over as we move through his writings, the gospel is changing us, literally transforming us. The end of this destination is union with Christ, oneness with Christ. That’s disruptive and it’s going to disrupt anything that will be in the way of that, that full sanctification, that full wholeness and restoration that we are headed toward. The gospel is always going to disrupt anything that would interrupt that. So, rather than reading a story like this and going, wow, you know, wherever these early people went, they caused problems. The gospel was highly inflammatory in all kinds of ways to all kinds of people for all kinds of reasons. We need to look into our own lives and say, just, does this still set my heart on fire? Is this still transforming me? Am I running into this full force with all my heart mind soul and strength? Some things to invite the Holy Spirit into today.

Prayer:

Holy Spirit, come. We ask for that. We invite you into that. We invite you into everything that the Scriptures bring up in our lives. And, so, we invite you into this. Show us the ways that we’ve grown numb. Show us the ways that we’ve grown cold. Show us the ways that we’ve kind of walled ourselves off from the disruption that the truth brings into our lives because when we wall ourselves off from the disruption we’re also walling ourselves off from the transformation. Come Holy Spirit, we pray. In Jesus’ name we ask. Amen.

Announcements:

dailyaudiobible.com is the website, its home base, it’s where you find out what’s going on…

…and we’ve been talking the last couple of days about the upcoming tradition that we have as the Daily Audio Bible community. It’s called the Long Walk, the Daily Audio Bible Long Walk and it takes place every July 7th. And this year, the 7th July falls on a Saturday. So, that makes it fairly easy for us all to participate. And, fundamentally, what the long walk is is exactly what it sounds like. You go somewhere beautiful. You take the day, set it aside, give it to God, go somewhere beautiful whether near or far from where you are and go for a long walk. And, in part, this is a living parable of our lives. We walk with God. But the truth is, there’s so many distractions, so many entanglements, that we are walking with God but we’re not always paying attention to that fact. So, a lot of times we reflect back on decisions and choices that we made, that we really didn’t talk with God on, we just had to make the choice. We didn’t slow down enough to stay present to what He might have to say. This is an opportunity to reset that and it takes place right here as we approach the hearts of the year, like right in the middle of the year. So, it’s this reset button, an opportunity to go for a long walk with God, somewhere beautiful, beautiful enough that if we’re distracted by anything, it is the beauty of His creation and His presence all around us. And just take that walk. Review the year so far. Consider how the Scriptures have spoken. Consider what God is doing in our lives and then allow Him to speak into what the second half of our year is supposed to look like. So, it is a rich and beautiful time that I look forward to every year because I’m as busy as the next guy. So, you know, there’s all the stuff that’s going on. So, to set this aside and just slow it all down and have a moment to just look back and look forward in hope is beautiful. So, take your phone or something. Don’t be distracted by it, but make sure you take a video or snap a picture. You’ll want to remember. You’ll want this for yourself. You’ll want to remember that time that you went for this long walk and what God spoke to you and all that happened, what you saw and how that felt. But take a picture that you can post back up to the Daily Audio Bible Facebook page, which is Facebook.com/dailyaudiobible. And as hundreds and hundreds of pictures come in, they become windows into each other’s lives. We get to kind of look through the lens of your camera at what you captured and what you found important and what it meant to you and share in that as a community. So, the Daily Audio Bible long walk is a solitary thing, but it’s also a very communal thing because we’re all doing it at the same time. And, so, when we post up the pictures, it just becomes…I love it…I look forward to it every year. Looking forward to it this year. So, that’s the Daily Audio Bible long walk. Make plans for the 7th of July and we’ll do this together.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Good morning DAB family. This is Paula calling from Albuquerque. It is Monday, June 18th. I just had to call. I listened to the podcast. I always listen first thing in the morning. This is my devotion time. But on Mondays I always listen to the community prayer afterward. Well, I was listening to the community prayer and stop playing so I went back to the app. It went back to today’s reading and Brian’s commentary on Elijah running from Jezebel. And with everything I’ve been going through with my daughter and her husband and my job and just life, I call them gut punches. So, you touched on that Brian and I thank you for that because it was what I needed to hear. God is not in all the drama. He’s in that still small voice. So, I’m just…I’m praying that all of us listened to that because marriages are being attacked, jobs are being attacked, our peace at home is being attacked. Marriages, oh my gosh, I cannot tell you how many marriages I know of right now. People’s faith being challenged. The list goes on and on and on and I know you all know that. So, anyway, I just wanted to let you all know that, you know, God is so much bigger than all of this. Thank you Mark Street, my brother, for praying for my daughter and her husband. I ask that you guys…we need to lift up prayers for marriages. There was a man that used to loosen that used to do a list and I just used to always read that list. So, anyways, stay on top of this ya’ll. So, I love you all so much and…

Hi family. It’s Shannon from Texas. I keep thinking that every time I call for myself that it will be the last time that I call but here I am calling again. And I hate to keep calling about a job. I just really feel like a fool even though I know that I’m not. I’m just really struggling right now needing a job. I definitely lost my way after many years with a man in just being, you know, I owned several businesses but I was just kind of half-wife and I took care of my family but after leaving him in that abusive relationship. He was a narcissist and the PTSD that I’ve suffered after has definitely…I’m realizing how much…even though it’s four years later…I’m just looking back thinking I have had a terrible time figuring out what I’m supposed to be doing now. And, I know the Lord has guided me, but I feel like it’s just going from worse to worse. And here I am two months after quitting a government job that I called in several times about and just utterly failing at. And I was able to get that job with a felony but now I have a felony on my record and I’ve been applying for jobs left and right and I just feel like I’m getting exposed everywhere that I go and I don’t know what God’s trying to do with it. He’s definitely up to something. I just need your prayer. I’m running out of money and bills are due and I know he’s got me but I just don’t want my mind to crumble in the meantime if that makes sense. I love you guys. I’m praying for all of you. Bye-bye.

Hello. My name is Elizabeth or in Hebrew that name also Ellushiva, which means, my God is abundance and he certainly is. It’s June the 18th and I spent a bit of the time today in prayer for God to raise up prayer warriors because there’s so many of us who are hurting. And I just was praying for God to raise us up to pray for those people. And then I listened to the June 17th podcast. And at the very end there were three amazing prayers by three amazing prayer warriors, one for Muslims and the bread of life, one for Cherry Chase Cherry Pie - all is well, and the last gentleman, who exhorting us to remember that God’s yoke is easy. So, my God is abundance. I prayed for prayer warriors and, wow, I can tell you that I was blessed with those prayer as I’m blessed with you every day that I listen to this wonderful podcast. So, thank you, family. Thank you, Brian. And God bless you.

Hi beautiful family. This is Pastor Gene from Bradenton Florida. I want to thank you so much for your prayers for me as I go through my trials, for the prayers for Victoria. She was told yesterday in the audition that she’s cute and very talented but she’s not quite ready. And we are okay with that, that the Lord is the Lord that opens and closes doors. So, we really can pray that and then when he closes, we’re really ___ . So, we just love the Lord for that. You know, in this industry, we are very, very used to no’s and we’re just speaking up and pushing on. But I love you family and I thank you for your prayers. I just want to give a shout out to our sister Christine from Washington. Sister, thank you so much for your call regarding your struggles in your marriage. You are always in my prayers. And you were talking about narcissism. And I want to talk a little bit about that from the perspective of someone that has narcissistic traits. And that is me. I was raised by a narcissistic mom but for me that was normal and I had no idea what narcissism was or what you __ defeat with. So, as I started realizing the abuse that I had been raised in then I realized that my mom was a narcissist, I realized that I had a lot of the same traits. And, so, for me prayer was not enough. I needed to relearn a way of life. And, so, I saw a Christian counselor and I focused on working and I read and I studied and I prayed and the Bible says, in Habakkuk, my people die for lack of knowledge. And I was literally dying and my marriage would have eventually died if I had not found myself with knowledge about this. So, I put that out there for whoever has to do it. I love you family. Pastor Gene from Bradenton Florida. Bye.

The Daily Audio Bible Reading for Friday June 22, 2018 (NIV)

2 Kings 3:1-4:17

King Joram of Israel

Joram[a] son of Ahab became king of Israel in Jehoshaphat’s eighteenth year as king of Judah.[b] Joram ruled twelve years from Samaria and disobeyed the Lord by doing wrong. He tore down the stone image his father had made to honor Baal, and so he wasn’t as sinful as his parents. But he kept doing the sinful things that Jeroboam son of Nebat had led Israel to do.[c]

The Country of Moab Rebels against Israel

For many years the country of Moab had been controlled by Israel and was forced to pay taxes to the kings of Israel. King Mesha of Moab raised sheep, so he paid the king of Israel one hundred thousand lambs and the wool from one hundred thousand rams. But soon after the death of Ahab, Mesha rebelled against Israel.

One day, Joram left Samaria and called together Israel’s army. He sent this message to King Jehoshaphat of Judah, “The king of Moab has rebelled. Will you go with me to attack him?”

“Yes, I will,” Jehoshaphat answered. “I’m on your side, and my soldiers and horses are at your command. But which way should we go?”

“We will march through Edom Desert,” Joram replied.

So Joram, Jehoshaphat, and the king of Edom led their troops out. But seven days later, there was no drinking water left for them or their animals. 10 Joram cried out, “This is terrible! The Lord must have led us out here to be captured by Moab’s army.”

11 Jehoshaphat said, “Which of the Lord’s prophets is with us? We can find out from him what the Lord wants us to do.”

One of Joram’s officers answered, “Elisha son of Shaphat is here. He was one of Elijah’s closest followers.”

12 Jehoshaphat replied, “He can give us the Lord’s message.”

The three kings went over to Elisha, 13 and he asked Joram, “Why did you come to me? Go talk to the prophets of the foreign gods your parents worshiped.”[d]

“No,” Joram answered. “It was the Lord who led us out here, so that Moab’s army could capture us.”

14 Elisha said to him, “I serve the Lord All-Powerful, and as surely as he lives, I swear I wouldn’t even look at you if I didn’t respect King Jehoshaphat.” 15 Then Elisha said, “Send for someone who can play the harp.”

The harpist began playing, and the Lord gave Elisha this message for Joram:

16 The Lord says that this dry riverbed will be filled with water.[e] 17 You won’t feel any wind or see any rain, but there will be plenty of water for you and your animals.

18 That simple thing isn’t all the Lord is going to do. He will also help you defeat Moab’s army. 19 You will capture all their walled cities and important towns. You will chop down every good tree and stop up every spring of water, then ruin their fertile fields by covering them with rocks.

20 The next morning, while the sacrifice was being offered, water suddenly started flowing from the direction of Edom, and it flooded the land.

21 Meanwhile, the people of Moab had heard that the three kings were coming to attack them. They had called together all of their fighting men, from the youngest to the oldest, and these troops were now standing at their border, ready for battle. 22 When they got up that morning, the sun was shining across the water, making it look red. The Moabite troops took one look 23 and shouted, “Look at that blood! The armies of those kings must have fought and killed each other. Come on, let’s go take what’s left in their camp.”

24 But when they arrived at Israel’s camp, the Israelite soldiers came out and attacked them, until they turned and ran away. Israel’s army chased them all the way back to Moab, and even there they kept up the attack.[f] 25 The Israelites destroyed the Moabite towns. They chopped down the good trees and stopped up the springs of water, then covered the fertile fields with rocks.

Finally, the only city left standing was Kir-Hareseth, but soldiers armed with slings surrounded and attacked it. 26 King Mesha of Moab saw that he was about to be defeated. So he took along seven hundred soldiers with swords and tried to break through the front line where the Edomite troops were positioned. But he failed. 27 He then grabbed his oldest son who was to be the next king and sacrificed him as an offering on the city wall. The Israelite troops were so horrified that[g] they left the city and went back home.

Elisha Helps a Poor Widow

One day the widow of one of the Lord’s prophets said to Elisha, “You know that before my husband died, he was a follower of yours and a worshiper of the Lord. But he owed a man some money, and now that man is on his way to take my two sons as his slaves.”

“Maybe there’s something I can do to help,” Elisha said. “What do you have in your house?”

“Sir, I have nothing but a small bottle of olive oil.”

Elisha told her, “Ask your neighbors for their empty jars. And after you’ve borrowed as many as you can, go home and shut the door behind you and your sons. Then begin filling the jars with oil and set each one aside as you fill it.” The woman left.

Later, when she and her sons were back inside their house, the two sons brought her the jars, and she began filling them.

At last, she said to one of her sons, “Bring me another jar.”

“We don’t have any more,” he answered, and the oil stopped flowing from the small bottle.

After she told Elisha what had happened, he said, “Sell the oil and use part of the money to pay what you owe the man. You and your sons can live on what is left.”

Elisha Brings a Rich Woman’s Son Back to Life

Once, while Elisha was in the town of Shunem,[h] he met a rich woman who invited him to her home for dinner. After that, whenever he was in Shunem, he would have a meal there with her and her husband.

Some time later the woman said to her husband, “I’m sure the man who comes here so often is a prophet of God. 10 Why don’t we build him a small room on the flat roof of our house? We can put a bed, a table and chair, and an oil lamp in it. Then whenever he comes, he can stay with us.”

11 The next time Elisha was in Shunem, he stopped at their house and went up to his room to rest. 12-13 He said to his servant Gehazi, “This woman has been very helpful. Have her come up here to the roof for a moment.” She came, and Elisha told Gehazi to say to her, “You’ve gone to a lot of trouble for us, and we want to help you. Is there something we can request the king or army commander to do?”[i]

The woman answered, “With my relatives nearby, I have everything I need.”

14 “Then what can we do for her?” Elisha asked Gehazi.

Gehazi replied, “I do know that her husband is old, and that she doesn’t have a son.”

15 “Ask her to come here again,” Elisha told his servant. He called for her, and she came and stood in the doorway of Elisha’s room.

16 Elisha said to her, “Next year at this time, you’ll be holding your own baby son in your arms.”

“You’re a man of God,” the woman replied. “Please don’t lie to me.”

17 But a few months later, the woman got pregnant. She gave birth to a son, just as Elisha had promised.

Acts 14:8-28

Paul and Barnabas in Lystra

In Lystra there was a man who had been born with crippled feet and had never been able to walk. The man was listening to Paul speak, when Paul saw that he had faith in Jesus and could be healed. So he looked straight at the man 10 and shouted, “Stand up!” The man jumped up and started walking around.

11 When the crowd saw what Paul had done, they yelled out in the language of Lycaonia, “The gods have turned into humans and have come down to us!” 12 The people then gave Barnabas the name Zeus, and they gave Paul the name Hermes,[a] because he did the talking.

13 The temple of Zeus was near the entrance to the city. Its priest and the crowds wanted to offer a sacrifice to Barnabas and Paul. So the priest brought some bulls and flowers to the city gates. 14 When the two apostles found out about this, they tore their clothes in horror and ran to the crowd, shouting:

15 Why are you doing this? We are humans just like you. Please give up all this foolishness. Turn to the living God, who made the sky, the earth, the sea, and everything in them. 16 In times past, God let each nation go its own way. 17 But he showed that he was there by the good things he did. God sends rain from heaven and makes your crops grow. He gives food to you and makes your hearts glad.

18 Even after Paul and Barnabas had said all this, they could hardly keep the people from offering a sacrifice to them.

19 Some Jewish leaders from Antioch and Iconium came and turned the crowds against Paul. They hit him with stones and dragged him out of the city, thinking he was dead. 20 But when the Lord’s followers gathered around Paul, he stood up and went back into the city. The next day he and Barnabas went to Derbe.

Paul and Barnabas Return to Antioch in Syria

21 Paul and Barnabas preached the good news in Derbe and won some people to the Lord. Then they went back to Lystra, Iconium, and Antioch in Pisidia. 22 They encouraged the followers and begged them to remain faithful. They told them, “We have to suffer a lot before we can get into God’s kingdom.” 23 Paul and Barnabas chose some leaders for each of the churches. Then they went without eating[b] and prayed that the Lord would take good care of these leaders.

24 Paul and Barnabas went on through Pisidia to Pamphylia, 25 where they preached in the town of Perga. Then they went down to Attalia 26 and sailed to Antioch in Syria. It was there that they had been placed in God’s care for the work they had now completed.[c]

27 After arriving in Antioch, they called the church together. They told the people what God had helped them do and how he had made it possible for the Gentiles to believe. 28 Then they stayed there with the followers for a long time.

Psalm 140

(A psalm by David for the music leader.)

A Prayer for the Lord’s Help

140 Rescue me from cruel
and violent enemies, Lord!
They think up evil plans
and always cause trouble.
Their words bite deep
like the poisonous fangs
of a snake.

Protect me, Lord, from cruel
and brutal enemies,
who want to destroy me.
Those proud people have hidden
traps and nets
to catch me as I walk.

You, Lord, are my God!
Please listen to my prayer.
You have the power to save me,
and you keep me safe
in every battle.

Don’t let the wicked succeed
in doing what they want,
or else they might never
stop planning evil.
They have me surrounded,
but make them the victims
of their own vicious lies.[a]
10 Dump flaming coals on them
and throw them into pits
where they can’t climb out.
11 Chase those cruel liars away!
Let trouble hunt them down.

12 Our Lord, I know that you
defend the homeless
and see that the poor
are given justice.
13 Your people will praise you
and will live with you
because they do right.

2 Kings 1:1-2:25, Acts 13:42-14:7, Psalms 139:1-24, Proverbs 17:19-21

Today is the 21st day of June. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I’m Brian. It’s great to be here with you today for the next step forward as we move deeper and deeper and further through the Scriptures this year, which brings us to kind of a new line of demarcation. We’re moving into the book of 2 Kings today in our Old Testament portion. And when we come to a new book, we talk about it. We talk about its context, its place in history. And, kind of what we’re going to cover, but with 2 Kings there’s nothing new to tell, versus 1 Kings. These were all one manuscript at one time. So, we’re just continuing the story forward. But as we move into 2 Kings we’ll see that the prophet Elijah that we have been following along with will be transferring his authority to his successor named Elisha. And we’ll follow that story forward. But we are beginning a new book, the book of 2 Kings and we will read chapters 1 and 2 today. And we’re reading from the contemporary English version this week.

Prayer:

Father, we thank You for Your word and we marvel at what we’re reading in Your word today because we want to be in Your presence every moment of this day and You’re telling us in the Psalms that there is no where we can go to flee from Your presence. So, we will be in Your presence today and the question will become whether or not we are paying attention. So, come Holy Spirit. May we sense Your presence all around us, leading our steps, whether the right or to the left, leading us forward into all truth, leading us on the narrow path that leads to life, leading us deeper into Jesus today. We ask these things in the name of Jesus’. Come Holy Spirit. We pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Announcements:

dailyaudiobible.com is the website, its home base, and, of course it’s where you find out what’s going on around here.

What’s going on right now is the upcoming Daily Audio Bible Long Walk. I believe this is the 11th annual Daily Audio Bible Long Walk. It takes place on the 7th of July. And, so, those of you who have been here for several years, you’ve probably been on long walks, you know what this is. But for those of you who are taking the journey for the first time, it’s kind of our own little Daily Audio Bible tradition. Almost our own little internal holiday that just came out of nowhere. Back in 2007, we had a big stadium prayer event that was televised here in Nashville. Because it was televised, many of the Daily Audio Bible community, and this is the early Daily Audio Bible community, it just would be our second year of doing this, were also watching along. So, we had this virtual experience that eventually transformed itself into the Daily Audio Bible Long Walk. An invitation to take a day, circle it on the calendar and say nothing is getting into this day. Nothing is taking me from this day. All the entanglements of my life, I’m disentangling for this day. I’m going for a long walk with somebody I need to talk to, someone who knows me better than I know myself. Someone who loves me deeper than any other love on this earth. I’m going for a long walk with God.

And it becomes this reset button in the center of the year. But we have time in the middle of the year to reflect back over the last six months. And yes, that’s about where were going to be here in a few days, halfway through the year and halfway through the Bible. So, it’s a great opportunity to look back at what the Bible has spoken, at what we have been faced with, and what we have overcome, of what we are continuing to press through and all of the beauty, all of the beauty of God’s faithfulness in our lives. Get the chance to kind of think that over and talk that over, debrief with the Lord and then look forward into what the next six months is supposed to look like. So, it’s a great opportunity for that. Go somewhere beautiful. Whether you make big plans and drive somewhere far away and enjoy beauty or whether you just walk across the street, it doesn’t really matter. And doesn’t matter where you are on earth. We’ll be doing this all over the world. Just take your phone or something. Take a picture. Don’t take a bunch of distractions because everything, will distract you, but make sure that you commemorate the day, remember the day. Take a picture. Shoot a little video or something. Then, post it to the Daily Audio Bible Facebook page, which is Facebook.com/dailyaudiobible and this beautiful window, a little mosaic of windows actually begins to open up. And throughout the day and the next day we get all these pictures and we can scroll through and just hear from each other, just look into each other’s lives for just that brief moment, have that connection, be able to look through the window and see all over the world. it’s great. So, make plans for that, the 7th of July. It’s a Saturday this year, so that makes it easy for most of us. So, make plans for the Daily Audio Bible long walk the 7th of July.

If you want to partner with the Daily Audio Bible, you can do that at dailyaudiobible.com. There is a link on the homepage. Thank you, thank you for your partnership. And, as always if you have a prayer request or comment, 877-942-4253 is the number to dial.

And that’s it for today. I’m Brian I love you and I’ll be waiting for here is tomorrow.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Hi Daily Audio Bible family members. This is __. I just wanted you all to know, well, Alice the Seeker, I just read your call on the community prayer line and I want you to know that I am praying for you, your wife, and your son. Everything that you’re going through with him. You were on your way to a psych eval. And I just pray for answers and I pray for doctors to recognize the need for some help for him. And the woman who called right after that also just struck a chord with me. It sounds like our stories are similar with your ex-husband, who you just,…was your first love…and whatever happened to break that up…I’ve been there with you sister. I recognize that. I am happy to have my husband as you are, as well your husband you currently have, but there is pain and there is sorrow in that still after all these years. It’s been what, 25 years, but he’s my children’s father, so we definitely still are connected. But I just want you to know I will be praying for you. I will be praying for you ex-husband and his cancer. I’m just, again, thankful for this community. Every single prayer that comes across this line I pray for. And, quickly, I would just like to lift up my daughter who is 24 weeks pregnant. They just discovered that the babies and umbilical cord is a two-chamber cord versus a three-chamber, which can be a sign of problems. It can be okay. There’s various things, but I’d just like to lift up my daughter in prayer if you all wouldn’t mind. I just thank you and I love you all. Have a great day.

Hello Daily Audio Bible family. This is Anne from Charlotte North Carolina. Thank you for those who prayed for me. I am still recovering from the mishap in the hospital. God healed me and saved my life and I wanted to ask prayer for our insurance business that I’ve been doing for 18 years and my husband for 10 with me. It has gone down dramatically in the last two years. And even though the economies improving, our business has not improved yet and we really need it to. So, would you pray that God would help us to find businesses and clients that need our help us with benefits and insurance and God will prosper and grow our business for us to have adequate provision and overflow to be generous givers we long to be. And I want to pray for pastor Gene. Father, thank you for Gene. She has the most beautiful name. You have given Gene a beautiful name and I pray that she will feel the presence of You our heavenly Father, who loves us and cares for us and who is our Jehovah Jira, You will encourage her in her purpose in the work that You call her to do and want her to do and that You will help her to rest in You and just all of us to be reminded Lord, especially Gene, that no matter what we do or don’t do, we are enough because Jesus died for us and we belong to You. And even if we were in a wheelchair and couldn’t move or do anything we are still of infinite worth and value because we’re made in your image and you love us.

Help me Lord upon this day
to be more Christlike in every way
help me choose the right words to say
while at work and while the play
help me pray and talk to You
help me choose the right things to do
help my whole life become brand-new
draw me always Lord closer to You
renew my strength when I feel weak
cleanse my heart and guide my feet
purify the things I seek
keep me humble keep me meek
guard my hands from things they touch
I’m seeking your spirit Lord very much
forgive me Lord when I don’t do right
help me fight the good Christian fight
in the day as well as the night
help me always to seek thy light
help me never be too proud to say
I’m trying to live in a Christlike way
and if I fail and start to sin
take me back Lord please amen

blindtony1016@gmail.com. Joe the Protector, I hope you’re still hanging in there, brother…hope you’re still hanging in there…and I hope things are well with your daughter. And, once again, Brian, thank you for this wonderful podcast for God’s Holy Spirit flow. Keep it flowin’ ya’ll. All right. Bye-bye.

Hello DAB family this is Michael from Mesa. Lots of little things…just lots of just things on my mind. First, just let you all know that I’ve been praying for marriages and just know that a lot of you are going through difficulties there. It’s on my heart regularly. So, I’m praying for you. Pastor Gene, just heard today the call from her husband about your situation. You know, we’ve been listening to your wonderful voice and wonderful prayers for our DAB family for a long time and know that we have you covered there to. So, we pray Lord that you’d be with Pastor Gene in the anguish she’s going through. Open the doors as she needs them. Get those closed where she needs them. She’s looking to You and her faith to guide her. So, Lord we just pray for that. And then personally, if you could pray for me in terms of getting clients for work. I’m coming off of kind of a major thing I need to get done here at work and when that happens I’m going to the clients. So, without clients I really can’t work. So, if you’d all be praying for me for that that be great. All right. Love you all. Listen to you every day. Brian thanks for the opportunity care. You do a fantastic job and everybody behind the scenes. Love you all. Talk to you soon. Michael from Mesa.

2 Kings 1-2

The Lord Condemns Ahaziah

1-2 Soon after King Ahab of Israel died, the country of Moab rebelled against his son King Ahaziah.[a]

One day, Ahaziah fell through the wooden slats around the porch on the flat roof of his palace in Samaria, and he was badly injured. So he sent some messengers to the town of Ekron[b] with orders to ask the god Baalzebub if he would get well.

About the same time, an angel from the Lord sent Elijah the prophet from Tishbe to say to the king’s messengers, “Ahaziah has rejected Israel’s own God by sending you to ask Baalzebub about his injury. Tell him that because he has done this, he’s on his deathbed! And Elijah did what he was told.

When the messengers returned to Ahaziah, he asked, “Why are you back so soon?”

“A man met us along the road with a message for you from the Lord,” they answered. “The Lord wants to know why you sent us to ask Baalzebub about your injury and why you don’t believe there’s a God in Israel. The man also told us that the Lord says you’re going to die.”

“What did the man look like?” Ahaziah asked.

“He was hairy[c] and had a leather belt around his waist,” they answered.

“It must be Elijah!” replied Ahaziah. So at once he sent an army officer and fifty soldiers to meet Elijah.

Elijah was sitting on top of a hill[d] at the time. The officer went up to him and said, “Man of God,[e] the king orders you to come down and talk with him.”

10 “If I am a man of God,” Elijah answered, “God will send down fire on you and your fifty soldiers.” Fire immediately came down from heaven and burned up the officer and his men.

11 Ahaziah sent another officer and fifty more soldiers to Elijah. The officer said, “Man of God, the king orders you to come see him right now.”

12 “If I am a man of God,” Elijah answered, “fire will destroy you and your fifty soldiers.” And God sent down fire[f] from heaven on the officer and his men.

13 Ahaziah sent a third army officer and fifty more soldiers. This officer went up to Elijah, then he got down on his knees and begged, “Man of God, please be kind to me and these fifty servants of yours. Let us live! 14 Fire has already wiped out the other officers and their soldiers. Please don’t let it happen to me.”

15 The angel from the Lord said to Elijah, “Go with him and don’t be afraid.” So Elijah got up and went with the officer.

16 When Elijah arrived, he told Ahaziah, “The Lord wants to know why you sent messengers to Ekron to ask Baalzebub about your injury. Don’t you believe there’s a God in Israel? Ahaziah, because you did that, the Lord says you will die.”

17 Ahaziah died, just as the Lord had said. But since Ahaziah had no sons, Joram[g] his brother[h] then became king. This happened in the second year that Jehoram son of Jehoshaphat was king of Judah.[i] 18 Everything else Ahaziah did while he was king is written in The History of the Kings of Israel.

The Lord Takes Elijah Away

Not long before the Lord took Elijah up into heaven in a strong wind, Elijah and Elisha were leaving Gilgal. Elijah said to Elisha, “The Lord wants me to go to Bethel, but you must stay here.”

Elisha replied, “I swear by the living Lord and by your own life that I will stay with you no matter what!” And he went with Elijah to Bethel.

A group of prophets who lived there asked Elisha, “Do you know that today the Lord is going to take away your master?”

“Yes, I do,” Elisha answered. “But don’t remind me of it.”

Elijah then said, “Elisha, now the Lord wants me to go to Jericho, but you must stay here.”

Elisha replied, “I swear by the living Lord and by your own life, that I will stay with you no matter what!” And he went with Elijah to Jericho.

A group of prophets who lived there asked Elisha, “Do you know that today the Lord is going to take away your master?”

“Yes, I do,” Elisha answered. “But don’t remind me of it.”

Elijah then said to Elisha, “Now the Lord wants me to go to the Jordan River, but you must stay here.”

Elisha replied, “I swear by the living Lord and by your own life that I will never leave you!” So the two of them walked on together.

Fifty prophets followed Elijah and Elisha from Jericho, then stood at a distance and watched as the two men walked toward the river. When they got there, Elijah took off his coat, then he rolled it up and struck the water with it. At once a path opened up through the river, and the two of them walked across on dry ground.

After they had reached the other side, Elijah said, “Elisha, the Lord will soon take me away. What can I do for you before that happens?”

Elisha answered, “Please give me twice as much of your power as you give the other prophets, so I can be the one who takes your place as their leader.”

10 “It won’t be easy,” Elijah answered. “It can happen only if you see me as I am being taken away.”

11 Elijah and Elisha were walking along and talking, when suddenly there appeared between them a flaming chariot pulled by fiery horses. Right away, a strong wind took Elijah up into heaven. 12 Elisha saw this and shouted, “Israel’s cavalry and chariots have taken my master away!”[j] After Elijah had gone, Elisha tore his clothes in sorrow.

13 Elijah’s coat had fallen off, so Elisha picked it up and walked back to the Jordan River. 14 He struck the water with the coat and wondered, “Will the Lord perform miracles for me as he did for Elijah?” As soon as Elisha did this, a dry path opened up through the water, and he walked across.

15 When the prophets from Jericho saw what happened, they said to each other, “Elisha now has Elijah’s power.”

They walked over to him, bowed down, 16 and said, “There are fifty strong men here with us. Please let them go look for your master. Maybe the Spirit of the Lord carried him off to some mountain or valley.”

“No,” Elisha replied, “they won’t find him.”

17 They kept begging until he was embarrassed to say no. He finally agreed, and the prophets sent the men out. They looked three days for Elijah but never found him. 18 They returned to Jericho, and Elisha said, “I told you that you wouldn’t find him.”

Elisha Makes the Water Pure at Jericho

19 One day the people of Jericho said, “Elisha, you can see that our city is in a good spot. But the water from our spring is so bad that it even keeps our crops from growing.”

20 He replied, “Put some salt in a new bowl and bring it to me.”

They brought him the bowl of salt, 21 and he carried it to the spring. He threw the salt into the water and said, “The Lord has made this water pure again. From now on you’ll be able to grow crops, and no one will starve.”

22 The water has been fine ever since, just as Elisha said.

Some Boys Make Fun of Elisha

23 Elisha left and headed toward Bethel. Along the way some boys started making fun of him by shouting, “Go away, baldy! Get out of here!”

24 Elisha turned around and stared at the boys. Then he cursed them in the name of the Lord. Right away two bears ran out of the woods and ripped to pieces forty-two of the boys.

25 Elisha went up to Mount Carmel, then returned to Samaria.

Acts 13:42-14:7

42 As Paul and Barnabas were leaving the meeting, the people begged them to say more about these same things on the next Sabbath. 43 After the service, many Jews and a lot of Gentiles who worshiped God went with them. Paul and Barnabas begged them all to remain faithful to God, who had been so kind to them.

44 The next Sabbath almost everyone in town came to hear the message about the Lord.[a] 45 When the Jewish people saw the crowds, they were very jealous. They insulted Paul and spoke against everything he said.

46 But Paul and Barnabas bravely said:

We had to tell God’s message to you before we told it to anyone else. But you rejected the message! This proves that you don’t deserve eternal life. Now we are going to the Gentiles. 47 The Lord has given us this command,

“I have placed you here
as a light
for the Gentiles.
You are to take
the saving power of God
to people everywhere on earth.”

48 This message made the Gentiles glad, and they praised what they had heard about the Lord. [b] Everyone who had been chosen for eternal life then put their faith in the Lord.

49 The message about the Lord spread all over that region. 50 But the Jewish leaders went to some of the important men in the town and to some respected women who were religious. They turned them against Paul and Barnabas and started making trouble for them. They even chased them out of that part of the country.

51 Paul and Barnabas shook the dust from that place off their feet[c] and went on to the city of Iconium.

52 But the Lord’s followers in Antioch were very happy and were filled with the Holy Spirit.

Paul and Barnabas in Iconium

14 Paul and Barnabas spoke in the Jewish meeting place in Iconium, just as they had done at Antioch, and many Jews and Gentiles[d] put their faith in the Lord. But the Jews who did not have faith in him made the other Gentiles angry and turned them against the Lord’s followers.

Paul and Barnabas stayed there for a while, having faith in the Lord and bravely speaking his message. The Lord gave them the power to work miracles and wonders, and he showed that their message about his great kindness was true.

The people of Iconium did not know what to think. Some of them believed the Jewish group, and others believed the apostles. Finally, some Gentiles and Jews, together with their leaders, decided to make trouble for Paul and Barnabas and to stone them to death.

6-7 But when the two apostles found out what was happening, they escaped to the region of Lycaonia. They preached the good news there in the towns of Lystra and Derbe and in the nearby countryside.

Footnotes:

  1. 13.44,48 the Lord: Some manuscripts have “God.”
  2. 13.44,48 the Lord: Some manuscripts have “God.”
  3. 13.51 shook the dust from that place off their feet: This was a way of showing rejection.
  4. 14.1 Gentiles: The Greek text has “Greeks,” which probably means people who were not Jews. But it may mean Gentiles who worshiped with the Jews.

Psalm 139

(A psalm by David for the music leader.)

The Lord Is Always Near

139 You have looked deep
into my heart, Lord,
and you know all about me.
You know when I am resting
or when I am working,
and from heaven
you discover my thoughts.

You notice everything I do
and everywhere I go.
Before I even speak a word,
you know what I will say,
and with your powerful arm
you protect me
from every side.
I can’t understand all of this!
Such wonderful knowledge
is far above me.

Where could I go to escape
from your Spirit
or from your sight?
If I were to climb up
to the highest heavens,
you would be there.
If I were to dig down
to the world of the dead
you would also be there.

Suppose I had wings
like the dawning day
and flew across the ocean.
10 Even then your powerful arm
would guide and protect me.
11 Or suppose I said, “I’ll hide
in the dark
until night comes
to cover me over.”
12 But you see in the dark
because daylight and dark
are all the same to you.

13 You are the one
who put me together
inside my mother’s body,
14 and I praise you
because of
the wonderful way
you created me.
Everything you do is marvelous!
Of this I have no doubt.

15 Nothing about me
is hidden from you!
I was secretly woven together
deep in the earth below,
16 but with your own eyes
you saw
my body being formed.
Even before I was born,
you had written in your book
everything I would do.

17 Your thoughts are far beyond
my understanding,
much more than I
could ever imagine.
18 I try to count your thoughts,
but they outnumber the grains
of sand on the beach.
And when I awake,
I will find you nearby.

19 How I wish that you would kill
all cruel and heartless people
and protect me from them!
20 They are always rebelling
and speaking evil of you.[a]
21 You know I hate anyone
who hates you, Lord,
and refuses to obey.
22 They are my enemies too,
and I truly hate them.

23 Look deep into my heart, God,
and find out everything
I am thinking.
24 Don’t let me follow evil ways,
but lead me in the way
that time has proven true.

Proverbs 17:19-21

19 The wicked and the proud
love trouble
and keep begging
to be hurt.
20 Dishonesty does you no good,
and telling lies
will get you in trouble.
21 It’s never pleasant
to be the parent of a fool
and have nothing but pain.

1 Kings 22:1-53, Acts 13:16-41, Psalms 138:1-8, Proverbs 17:17-18

Today is the 20th day of June. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I am Brian. It is a pleasure, it is an honor and it is a joy to be here with you today as we prepare to take the next step forward in our lives and in the Scriptures. And this week we’ve been reading from the Contemporary English Version, working our way through the kings in the Old Testament and the story of the early church in the book of Acts. Today 1 Kings chapter 22.

Prayer:

Father, we thank You for Your Word. We thank You for all of its facets. We thank You for all of the territory that it takes us into, places that we’ve never seen before. And even when we’re coming back through the same territory again, we see it with different eyes. Your Holy Spirit continues to lead and direct us. You continue to show us the path forward, and we’re thankful for this gift. We invite Your Holy Spirit to plant the words of the Scriptures into our hearts and minds so that they can change our lives from within. Come, Holy Spirit, we pray. In the name of Jesus’ we ask. Amen.

So, it’s getting to be that time of year. And what time of year is it getting to be you ask? It’s getting to be time for the Daily Audio Bible Long Walk. And if you’re scratching your head and you’re confused cause this is your first year through the bible at Daily Audio Bible, then here’s kind of the short story. The Daily Audio Bible started in 2006. In 2007, so we’re going back a ways now. I mean, it doesn’t seem like it’s that long of a time ago, but technology has rapidly increased in the last decade. But back then, back in the old days, it wasn’t quite as interactive and there was this giant stadium prayer revival type thing that happened here in Nashville in our football stadium and there were like seventy thousand people or whatever. It was just a huge, huge thing. And I went down to that and it was being televised. So, many people inside the Daily Audio Bible community around the world knew about this and were watching. So, we were there but many were watching. It was the first time because Daily Audio Bible was only a year and a half old, first time that we were all able to do something virtually all at the same time. And so we did this and lots of emails came in and there was this one email of a person who had done a prayer walk that day and walked, oh I don’t remember, twenty miles. Like a really, really long time. A really long walk. And a tradition kind of got born. Every July 7 since then, we’ve done the Daily Audio Bible Long Walk

What’s going on right now is the upcoming Daily Audio Bible Long Walk. I believe this is the 11th annual Daily Audio Bible Long Walk. It takes place on the 7th of July. And so those of you who have been here for several years, you’ve probably been on long walks, you know what this is. I mean, because that’s how we describe our faith journey, right? We’re walking with God. So, this is a day to actually go for a long walk. And it doesn’t matter where you are. It doesn’t matter where you are on planet Earth. You can do this. And as you do this, as you go for a long walk with God, you will not be alone. Your brothers and sisters all over the world will be doing this. So, just take your phone or tablet, not so that you can find additional distractions from your day. This is a day to set aside and say everything that you’ve needed to say, the things that have been building up throughout this year, the things that you need to have a conversation with God about, the things that you need his leading and guidance on. So, don’t be distracted. But you don’t want to forget this day either. If you’ve never done a Daily Audio Bible Long Walk before, if you’ve never done this, well it doesn’t even have to be Daily Audio Bible Long Walk, this is just when we do it together. If you’ve never gone on a long walk with God, you’re in for a treat. So, go somewhere beautiful. Well, the first thing you gotta do is set aside the day, the 7th of July, which happens to be a Saturday this year. And then plan where you’re gonna go. Maybe you’re gonna drive a couple hours to somewhere that is meaningful to you. Or a place that you find just exquisitely beautiful. Or maybe you’re gonna drive five minutes to a park that you find gorgeous. The point is, get outside in nature. Disconnect from the hectic pace of life. Give yourself this one day to just be where you are and look at the detail of God’s creation and allow yourself to become aware of his presence in all things and then say what you need to say. Have a conversation and leave enough space for him to say the things that he’s been trying to say to you for a while, the things that he’s wanted to tell you for a while but there hasn’t been time because it’s been too frantic.  This is an opportunity at the center of the year to say, Okay, I’m giving this day to God, I’m gonna review the first six months of the year, we’re gonna go back over that, we’re gonna talk about all the fun that we had and all the challenges that we faced and now we’re gonna look forward together, because I’m not walking another day without God. I’m walking into the second half of this year fully aware of where he is leading me to go right now, understanding the context for where it is I am right now and walking into it with the confidence of the Holy Spirit in my life. It’s a beautiful thing. So, take a picture, post it to the Daily Audio Bible Facebook page, which is Facebook.com/dailyaudiobible. And this mosaic just begins to materialize as hundreds of little windows are opened into each other’s lives. And just scrolling through after the long walk is almost like a little bit of a world tour. So, we’ve had this tradition and this is the 11th annual Daily Audio Bible Long Walk, so we’ve had this tradition for a while. And it’s never not been deeply meaningful. So, plan on that the 7th of July.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Hello everyone in the Daily Audio Bible community, this is Keisha and I just want to call and request prayer just for a couple things. My heart…and I’ve walked a Christian life a long time…and I feel very alone in my family. Also, I want to pray for…I’m asking prayer for…I am morbidly obese. I am over 300 pounds and it’s because of depression and living in a family that has a generational curse of depression along with several other things. And I’m so ashamed to ask for prayers in these areas just with my family and my health and my weight and my marriage. But I just…I believe in the power of prayer and I believe in this community and I’m just asking for your help. Brian and Jill, I just thank you so much for your ministry and for your devotion. I love you all and I’m praying with you all and I just…I just need you to call my name. Thank you.

Hello Daily Audio Bible family. This is Carol from Arizona and I had called about a month ago and I sent in a prayer request to all of you about my brother who was recently diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. I want to call in a praise report. And that before my message was played, my brother had some blood work and his liver enzymes came back really off. They weren’t good and the doctor ordered an ultrasound and they were very worried that the cancer was now in his liver and then my message was played on the Daily Audio Bible. And he went and an ultrasound and they did not find any in the liver. And then about a week after that they took his blood work again and the liver enzyme test came back completely normal. And his doctor and the doctor’s nurse just couldn’t believe…they said it’s nothing short of a miracle. They just couldn’t believe it. And my brother knows that I had called a message in. So, he asked that I call in and thank you. Thank everybody who prayed for him because it worked. We know that prayers work. My brother is a strong, strong believer and I thank you all so much for praying for him. Even the nurse said that it’s renewed faith because she knows how strong his faith is. So, thank you family for praying for my brother. We got a miraculous report back and I would just ask that if you could all just keep praying for him. He’s on some experimental chemo medication and we’re going to hope that that’s to shrink some of the…it’s going to shrink that pancreatic tumor so that they can do surgery. I love you guys. I pray for you all time. And again, I thank you so much for your prayers and just ask that you’ll keep praying and I’ll call in these miracle reports. Love you guys. Bye.

Hi. This is Victoria S. Just calling tonight to pray for one of…for some of the DABbers. I want to pray for the lady in Alaska that had the single car accident. She said the mom and one of the kids didn’t make it. I want to pray for that mom and for that family, that these kids will find a place to be. Also, to say hi to Margot in Australia. I wanted to also pray for the lady in Indiana whose husband has Parkinson’s disease that has to have the surgery. I want to pray for him. And I also want to pray for Lynn…who…Lynn regarded to the alcohol. Don’t trust them Lynn. You know, the thing as Christians, we fall down many times. But it’s not the falling down. It’s the getting up. You get up and you get right back on that horse. You can do it honey. You can do it. And God can give you the strength. He can take away the desire. Just continue to trust Him. Gracious Father, we come today. Oh, Father, in the name of Jesus we ask You to touch that mother and that child and the children in those accidents. Lord, the children that made it, Lord, You provide for them Lord in a mighty and special way. Lord, You comfort that family in the mighty name of Jesus. Lord we ask you to touch that gentleman that has the Parkinson’s disease each step of the way. Lord, we ask You to be with him. We ask You to heal him each step of the way. You are a miracle working God. You can do anything but fail and Lord, we want to thank You in advance for healing our brother as he goes through the process. I want to ask You to talk to Lynn Lord. You know that You are a God that can do anything. You are a forgiving God. You are God that can work miracles. Lord, I ask You to touch Lynn. You would have her trust You and let her know that she is not…she can make it. She is more than a conqueror and that You are carrying her through the rough and the difficult times when she is weak. Remember, when you are weak Lynn, He is strong. Continue to…

Good morning Daily Audio Bible family. I wanted to say happy Father’s Day to all of the fathers, how much you matter and how much difference you make in our lives. Thank you for being you and for loving us and for showing us a good example, especially for Brian and all the other dads that are so in one with the Lord. And I just wanted to lift up Michaela in the UK. Your heart is so beautiful, that you’re always…you’re ministering to the Muslim community. And I just pray for Michaela’s refreshment, for refreshment Michaela. In Matthew 11:28-30 it’s written that Jesus said, come to me all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you because I am humble and gentle at heart and you will find rest for your soul. For my yoke is easy to bear and the burden I give you is light. So, praying, lifting up Michaela as she deals with so many of the stresses that we all face in life, like her…I mean…workloads and conflicts in relationships and financial uncertainties and that as Michaela struggles with these issues, that she is not alone, the Holy Spirit lifts her up and empowers her and refreshes her and that she has fellowship and support of other Christians and that she continues to live and work in a cross-cultural environment adding that additional element of God’s love and reaching people and how will they know if we don’t tell them. So, I am just praying for refreshment and protection over Michaela in the UK. Thank you, brothers and sisters. In Jesus’ mighty and precious name I pray. Amen.
