Leviticus 14

Cleansing of Skin Diseases

14 The Lord spoke to Moses: “This is the law(A) concerning the person afflicted with a skin disease on the day of his cleansing.(B) He is to be brought to the priest,(C) who will go outside the camp(D) and examine him.(E) If the skin disease has disappeared from the afflicted person,[a] the priest will order that two live clean birds,(F) cedar wood,(G) scarlet(H) yarn, and hyssop(I) be brought for the one who is to be cleansed. Then the priest will order that one of the birds be slaughtered over fresh water in a clay pot. He is to take the live bird together with the cedar wood, scarlet yarn, and hyssop, and dip them all into the blood of the bird that was slaughtered over the fresh water. He will then sprinkle the blood seven times on the one who is to be cleansed from the skin disease. He is to pronounce him clean and release the live bird over the open countryside.(J) The one who is to be cleansed must wash his clothes, shave off all his hair, and bathe with water; he is clean. Afterward he may enter the camp, but he must remain outside his tent for seven days. He is to shave off all his hair again on the seventh day: his head, his beard, his eyebrows, and the rest of his hair. He is to wash his clothes and bathe himself with water; he is clean.

10 “On the eighth day he must take two unblemished(K) male lambs, an unblemished year-old ewe lamb, a grain offering of six quarts[b] of fine flour mixed with olive oil, and one-third of a quart[c] of olive oil. 11 The priest who performs the cleansing will place the person who is to be cleansed, together with these offerings, before the Lord at the entrance to the tent of meeting. 12 The priest is to take one male lamb and present it as a guilt offering,(L) along with the one-third quart of olive oil, and he will present them as a presentation offering(M) before the Lord. 13 He is to slaughter the male lamb at the place in the sanctuary area where the sin offering(N) and burnt offering(O) are slaughtered,(P) for like the sin offering, the guilt offering belongs to the priest;(Q) it is especially holy.(R) 14 The priest is to take some of the blood from the guilt offering and put it on the lobe of the right ear of the one to be cleansed, on the thumb of his right hand, and on the big toe of his right foot.(S) 15 Then the priest will take some of the one-third quart of olive oil and pour it into his left palm. 16 The priest will dip his right finger into the oil in his left palm and sprinkle some of the oil with his finger seven times before the Lord. 17 From the oil remaining in his palm the priest will put some on the lobe of the right ear of the one to be cleansed, on the thumb of his right hand, and on the big toe of his right foot, on top of the blood of the guilt offering.(T) 18 What is left of the oil in the priest’s palm he is to put on the head of the one to be cleansed. In this way the priest will make atonement for him before the Lord. 19 The priest is to sacrifice the sin offering and make atonement for the one to be cleansed from his uncleanness.(U) Afterward he will slaughter the burnt offering. 20 The priest is to offer the burnt offering and the grain offering on the altar. The priest will make atonement for him, and he will be clean.(V)

21 “But if he is poor(W) and cannot afford these,(X) he is to take one male lamb for a guilt offering to be presented in order to make atonement for him, along with two quarts[d] of fine flour mixed with olive oil for a grain offering, one-third of a quart of olive oil, 22 and two turtledoves or two young pigeons, whatever he can afford, one to be a sin offering and the other a burnt offering. 23 On the eighth day he is to bring these things for his cleansing to the priest at the entrance to the tent of meeting before the Lord. 24 The priest will take the male lamb for the guilt offering and the one-third quart of olive oil, and present them as a presentation offering before the Lord. 25 After he slaughters the male lamb for the guilt offering, the priest is to take some of the blood of the guilt offering and put it on the right earlobe of the one to be cleansed, on the thumb of his right hand, and on the big toe of his right foot. 26 Then the priest will pour some of the oil into his left palm. 27 With his right finger the priest will sprinkle some of the oil in his left palm seven times before the Lord. 28 The priest will also put some of the oil in his palm on the right earlobe of the one to be cleansed, on the thumb of his right hand, and on the big toe of his right foot, on the same place as the blood of the guilt offering. 29 What is left of the oil in the priest’s palm he is to put on the head of the one to be cleansed to make atonement for him before the Lord.(Y) 30 He is to then sacrifice one type of what he can afford, either the turtledoves or young pigeons, 31 one as a sin offering and the other as a burnt offering, sacrificing what he can afford together with the grain offering. In this way the priest will make atonement before the Lord for the one to be cleansed. 32 This is the law for someone who has[e] a skin disease and cannot afford the cost of his cleansing.”

Cleansing of Contaminated Objects

33 The Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron: 34 “When you enter the land of Canaan(Z) that I am giving you as a possession,(AA) and I place a mildew contamination in a house in the land you possess,[f] 35 the owner of the house is to come and tell the priest: Something like mildew contamination has appeared[g] in my house. 36 The priest must order them to clear the house before he enters to examine the contamination, so that nothing in the house becomes unclean. Afterward the priest will come to examine the house. 37 He will examine it, and if the contamination in the walls of the house consists of green or red indentations[h] that appear to be beneath the surface of the wall, 38 the priest is to go outside the house to its doorway and quarantine the house for seven days. 39 The priest is to return on the seventh day and examine it. If the contamination has spread on the walls of the house, 40 the priest must order that the stones with the contamination be pulled out and thrown into an unclean place outside the city. 41 He is to have the inside of the house completely scraped, and have the plaster[i] that is scraped off dumped in an unclean place outside the city. 42 Then they are to take different stones to replace the former ones and take additional plaster to replaster the house.

43 “If the contamination reappears in the house after the stones have been pulled out, and after the house has been scraped and replastered, 44 the priest is to come and examine it. If the contamination has spread in the house, it is harmful mildew; the house is unclean. 45 It must be torn down with its stones, its beams, and all its plaster, and taken outside the city to an unclean place. 46 Whoever enters the house during any of the days the priest quarantines it will be unclean until evening. 47 Whoever lies down in the house is to wash his clothes, and whoever eats in it is to wash his clothes.

48 “But when the priest comes and examines it, if the contamination has not spread in the house after it was replastered, he is to pronounce the house clean because the contamination has disappeared.[j] 49 He is to take two birds, cedar wood, scarlet yarn, and hyssop to purify the house, 50 and he is to slaughter one of the birds over a clay pot containing fresh water. 51 He will take the cedar wood, the hyssop, the scarlet yarn, and the live bird, dip them in the blood of the slaughtered bird and the fresh water, and sprinkle the house seven times. 52 He will purify the house with the blood of the bird, the fresh water, the live bird, the cedar wood, the hyssop, and the scarlet yarn. 53 Then he is to release the live bird into the open countryside(AB) outside the city. In this way he will make atonement for the house, and it will be clean.

54 “This is the law for any skin disease or mildew, for a scaly outbreak, 55 for mildew in clothing or on a house, 56 and for a swelling, scab, or spot, 57 to determine when something is unclean or clean. This is the law regarding skin disease and mildew.”

Mark 6:30-56

Feeding of the Five Thousand

30 The(A) apostles(B) gathered around Jesus and reported to him all that they had done and taught. 31 He said to them, “Come away by yourselves to a remote place and rest for a while.” For many people were coming and going, and they did not even have time to eat.

32 So they went away in the boat by themselves to a remote place, 33 but many saw them leaving and recognized them, and they ran on foot from all the towns and arrived ahead of them.[a]

34 When he went ashore, he saw a large crowd and had compassion(C) on them, because they were like sheep(D) without a shepherd. Then he began to teach them many things.

35 When it grew late, his disciples(E) approached him and said, “This place is deserted,(F) and it is already late. 36 Send them away so that they can go into the surrounding countryside and villages to buy themselves something to eat.”

37 “You give them something to eat,” he responded.

They said to him, “Should we go and buy two hundred denarii[b] worth of bread and give them something to eat?”

38 He asked them, “How many loaves do you have? Go and see.”

When they found out they said, “Five, and two fish.” 39 Then he instructed them to have all the people sit down in groups on the green grass. 40 So they sat down in groups of hundreds and fifties. 41 He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, he blessed and broke the loaves. He kept giving them to his disciples to set before the people. He also divided the two fish among them all. 42 Everyone ate and was satisfied.(G) 43 They picked up twelve baskets full of pieces of bread and fish. 44 Now those who had eaten the loaves were five thousand men.

Walking on the Water

45 Immediately(H) he made his disciples get into the boat and go ahead of him to the other side, to Bethsaida,(I) while he dismissed the crowd. 46 After he said good-bye to them, he went away to the mountain(J) to pray.(K) 47 Well into the night, the boat was in the middle of the sea, and he was alone on the land. 48 He saw them straining(L) at the oars,[c] because the wind was against them. Very early in the morning[d] he came toward them walking on the sea and wanted to pass by them. 49 When they saw him walking on the sea, they thought it was a ghost(M) and cried out, 50 because they all saw him and were terrified.(N) Immediately he spoke with them and said, “Have courage!(O) It is I.(P) Don’t be afraid.”(Q) 51 Then he got into the boat with them, and the wind ceased. They were completely astounded, 52 because they had not understood about the loaves. Instead, their hearts were hardened.(R)

Miraculous Healings

53 When they had crossed over, they came to shore at Gennesaret(S) and anchored there.

54 As they got out of the boat, people immediately recognized him. 55 They hurried throughout that region and began to carry the sick(T) on mats to wherever they heard he was. 56 Wherever he went, into villages, towns, or the country, they laid the sick in the marketplaces and begged him that they might touch just the end(U) of his robe.(V) And everyone who touched it was healed.

Psalm 40:1-10

Psalm 40

Thanksgiving and a Cry for Help

For the choir director. A psalm of David.

I waited patiently for the Lord,
and he turned to me and heard my cry for help.(A)
He brought me up from a desolate[a] pit,
out of the muddy clay,(B)
and set my feet on a rock,
making my steps secure.(C)
He put a new song in my mouth,
a hymn of praise to our God.(D)
Many will see and fear,
and they will trust in the Lord.(E)

How happy is anyone
who has put his trust in the Lord
and has not turned to the proud
or to those who run after lies!(F)
Lord my God, you have done many things—
your wondrous works and your plans for us;
none can compare with you.
If I were to report and speak of them,
they are more than can be told.(G)

You do not delight in sacrifice and offering;
you open my ears to listen.[b]
You do not ask for a whole burnt offering or a sin offering.(H)
Then I said, “See, I have come;
in the scroll it is written about me.(I)
I delight to do your will, my God,(J)
and your instruction is deep within me.”(K)

I proclaim righteousness in the great assembly;
see, I do not keep my mouth closed[c]
as you know, Lord.(L)
10 I did not hide your righteousness in my heart;
I spoke about your faithfulness and salvation;
I did not conceal your constant love and truth
from the great assembly.(M)

Leviticus 13:1-59, Mark 6:1-29, Psalms 39:1-13, Proverbs 10:10

Today is the 22nd day of February, welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I am Brian it’s great to be here with you today. And I love this day, it comes once a year for me and I get to say from the Sea of Galilee, welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. We get to spend several days here but this is like the first day. And, so, this is like the first morning that we get to wake up and see it and just marvel that we’re here. And it’s so different from the wilderness that it seems as if we might have traveled to a completely different part of the world. And in truth, I think we’re just 2 or 300 miles away from the furthest Southpoint in Israel. This land is incredibly diverse and incredibly enchanting. It's…and now that we’re here in the Galilee, it’s just…I love this. So, welcome from the Sea of Galilee. And I’m excited to tell you about the adventures that we had yesterday. And we’re like super excited about what we’re gonna experience today. But the thing that we need to experience, the thing that we’ve come for, the thing that we need is to open our hearts and allow God’s word to speak. So, we’ve been reading from the New International Version this week. Today Leviticus chapter 13.

Commentary:

Okay. So, how about that riveting reading in the book of Leviticus today where we discussed skin diseases and mold? Man…that was so rich I almost want to read it again. How about we just read it again right now? You’re probably like, “No! No! Why?!? We’re already read it. Let’s not do that again.” And we can go okay, “what's…what’s mold got to do with anything? What’s skin disease…like…what’s happening here?” And a number of things are happening here. One of them is incredibly practical. You got a million people out in the wilderness and a plague of skin disease starts to spread you got a problem. If you got mold spreading throughout the community, you got a problem. So, the letter of the law makes perfect sense. This…this God is giving these rules about skin and about mold to protect the people on their journey. But what’s underneath all of this? I mean, our physical bodies, we’re aware of our physicality. We understand we have a physical body but we also understand that we have a spirit or  like a spiritual body and we become more and more aware of that as we become more and more aware of our interior lives, which is what the Bible is pointed at. So, let’s just suppose something is really bugging you. There’s just this one thing, this one little area in your life that’s really, really bothering, it feels almost like our ash inside. That one area, this situation, this relationship, this set of circumstances, it’s just…it’s bothering you. So, the first thing to do then is to think about how deep this goes. Is this on the surface? Is this something that’s passing? This is just a temporary kind of thing that’s kind of bugging you right now but it…it…it doesn’t go deeper or is it more than skin deep? Is it defiling you? Is it getting roots and going to spread and go deeper and sink deeper into you? Then that’s a problem. If you’ve got mold growing in your house and it…and it doesn’t matter if its thousands of years ago in the wilderness or if it’s today in whatever city you live in. If you’ve got mold in your house that’s a problem. And once you discover it you need to do everything possible to get rid of it. And sometimes that can be really, really tricky, but it’s a health hazard. And it will only get worse. And at some point, if it’s left to run rampant it will condemn the structure. We know that. What if there’s some mold growing on the wall of your heart? What if you’re aware of it but you leave it alone, you don’t take it to your great high priest to have it examined? You keep it in the dark and you let it grow in the dark until it spiders its way up to your ceiling, then you got a problem. So, let's…let’s use that today as a launching pad for what we meditate, just allowing that to sink in, to think about what’s chafing us. Is it skin deep or is it below the surface? Is it on my walls and I’m keeping it hidden and it’s only going to get worse or do I need to get rid of it by taking it to my high priest and having it examined? There’s probably something in there for every single one of us today straight out of the book of Leviticus

Prayer:

Father, we thank You for that. We welcome You into that. We invite Your Holy Spirit into that. We open our hearts to You. We need You to examine our interior lives. We’re coming to You. Are these things skin deep? Are they on the surface? Have they grown? Do they need to be cut out? What about this mold? Is it deep into the walls? Is it growing? Will it spread? These things, we’re kind of aware but we’re not intentional and we’re being intentional now. Show us the places within us that need attention and we ask this in the mighty name of Jesus. Amen.

Announcements:

Okay. So, as I mentioned at the beginning, we’re in…we’re in…we’re in the Galilee. We’re right along the Sea of Galilee and it’s so good to be…so good to be back here and pick up the story of Jesus here and start walking in His footsteps around this area. And, so, we’re excited to see the places that we visited in the Bible like within just the last couple of days we’ll be able to see the day. So, looking forward to that.

Yesterday, so we like finished our…our wilderness portion of this pilgrimage. We moved out of the wilderness. Like we began at the lowest point on earth, that’s the Dead Sea and moved our way to the Galilee. That…it was a busy day. So, we went to the oasis Engedi and Engedi, this is a place spoken of in the Psalms, in the song of Solomon. A great staging for a battle was…was at Engedi. It’s an oasis so it’s in the middle of the wilderness, but it’s freshwater in the wilderness. And there…it’s dotted with caves all around this entire area. So, early desert fathers and monks would live lives in these caves. And also , David hid in these caves. That’s spoken about in the Scriptures. In…in one of these caves…there’s no way to know, but in  one of these caves Saul, king Saul who we haven’t met yet in the Scriptures, is pursuing David and he goes into one of these caves to use the bathroom and David’s hiding in there and cuts off some of his robe. So, like it’s very rooted in the Scriptures. So, we spent some time there and China shared with us there. She…she had us close our eyes and hear the waterfall and fresh water in the desert and shared with us about promise and is a beautiful moment, just absolutely beautiful moment before continuing moving a little north to another site called Qumran. And it’s in the same general area. Lots of caves. Lots of barren wilderness. But Qumran is…is…is the site of probably the greatest biblical archaeological find ever and that would be the Dead Sea Scroll. Some of the manuscripts found in the Dead Sea Scrolls are the earliest documents in the Bible. So, like the Bibles been passed down for all of these centuries but we don’t have any original, like any of the original manuscripts, like when it was very first written down. But some of the earliest, like the oldest biblical texts that…that exist, that have ever been found were found in Qumran. So, we visited there and there’s one cave in particular, it’s got a great overlook but it’s, you know, it’s the one see…if you hear about Qumran this is the picture that you see. And, so, we got to see that and take some pictures and just appreciate what we’re looking at. So, then we went into Jericho for lunch and a little shopping and to see some of the ruins of most ancient Jericho. And, I mean, there's…there’s a lot of archaeology that’s been done there, and some really, really interesting things that have been done there. But you think of Jericho and you think of fallen down walls and you want all that kind of thing and it…it’s just a little different than that but very very very…it’s like one of the most ancient cities in the entire world. And that also gave us the chance to kind of move more into it like the Arab culture. Jericho is an Arab city and so we were able to experience that. And also, to just consider this the story…well there’s just a number of biblical stories that kind of converge. Jesus temptation in the wilderness after his baptism would’ve been in the wilderness nearby, right there. And the Kedron Valley, which is famous because it’s in Jerusalem, that Valley actually winds its way all the way down to Jericho. So, like 20 miles and it’s been a notoriously dangerous road to go on. So, the story that the Jesus told about the good Samaritan, the backdrop for that story would’ve been this valley down to Jericho. And even David’s writing, “Yay though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death.” This is what he’s referring to. So…so, once we…we finished up it was time to get moving north. Several…well a couple hours heading north to get up into the Galilee area and get checked in and get situated and we’ll be camping out here. Like now our wilderness wanderings have come to a close. And, yeah, we…we’ve had like…we’ve had to pack up and leave and move to another place and then pack up and leave move to another place every day and it’s been super easy for us, even though it’s easy for us to complain, it's…it’s been easy. We’ve been driven to where we need to go, we’ve had porters to take our luggage to our rooms and we’ve you know…but it’s just been the jostling around. But it helps to understand what that would’ve been like if we had walk, if we had to pack up our tent, if we had to get all our stuff together, pack it up and start walking to keep moving to be nomads. And, so, that experience, we’ve had it and it’s over and we’re gonna camp out here in the Galilee and just immerse ourselves in the stories that happened here in the North, especially surrounding Jesus life but not exclusively surrounding Jesus life. And, so, that’s what we’ll be doing these next few days.

So, again, thank you for your continued prayers. We’re posting pictures and videos and stuff all along the way on our social media channels at Instagram and on Facebook. So, if you haven’t tuned in you can go back and kind of look at the different things that we’re seeing and doing and just be…just be a part of what’s going on even virtually because we’re a community and we’re moving through the Scriptures every day here. Like this never stops. And, so, we’re in community. We just…some of us happen to be here on a pilgrimage in the land of the Bible, but because we do this and post all this and talk about it just brings the biblical lands closer as we read through the Scriptures. So, make sure to watch that or check…check those channels out and see what we’re posting.

Today is the Sabbath. So, Shabbat Shalom, happy Sabbath to you. And, so, we’ll be traveling around today. But tonight, this evening we will be broadcasting live from here at the Sea of Galilee. And, so, you can kinda tune in and see everybody and hear from…like you’ve been hearing me describe everything but you kinda hear it from other people and have the opportunity to send in questions. And, so, we’ll spend about an hour doing that and it will be at 7:30 PM local, that’s Israel time. So, that is 12:30 PM in Nashville, like just after lunch and it’s 5:30 PM in London. All you have to do is Google where you are and the time difference between Tel Aviv and you can kinda sort that out. And, so we’ll be going live tonight. Looking forward to that very much. It’s always a blast. So, hope you can…hope you can tune in. That’ll be a Facebook.com/dailyaudiobible. And we’ll see you there.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Hi Daily Audio Bible family this is Preston from Sunnyvale California today is February 19th time is 11:21 AM. I have two prayer requests. I want to lift up, first of all, as a call out to all Californians. If you’ve noticed, we haven’t had much rain this year and I just would like to lift up the state of California for that we have some rain for the…the rest of this winter that we have. They from the West Coast, we all know how much the winter rains are…impact the rest of the year. And, so, I just lift up the state of California that we get the rain that we need to prevent the drought this summer. My second prayer request is that…is for work. I’m in the process of finding a new job after getting fired from my sales job and I just ask that…ask for God’s blessings on that, that I find a job that leads me to be able to support my wife and support us so that we can…we can start a family. I was fired for doing the right thing, for refusing to lie to a customer about parts orders and it’s a long story. But thank you for your prayers. I love you guys. Just…Brian just thank you so much for this wonderful podcast. And, yeah, have a great day. Okay. Bye.

Hello beloved child of God I feel your pain, your brokenness, your sadness. I sit with you in Shiva. I sit just to be with you with a desire to help lift the pain you are feeling. I know you feel as though there’s new hope. I know you feel alone and you feel as though God is not working in your life but I am here as your sister, your godly sister and as I sit with you the rest of our family, our godly family comes and joins me in this moment to be with you and we bring the love of Christ to surround you with that. But there’s more, there is hope and the fact is the Lord is within you. We are only a representation of the love we have felt from him, that we have known of Him and we are here…sorry…to give you hope to be with you. If your faith is not strong right now, lean on ours. The Lord will rescue. The Lord will help. And, so, I put my arms around you as do my brothers and sisters here as does the Lord.

Hi DAB family it’s Carla Jean from Las Vegas I’m calling today to tell you that I still don’t have a job, still don’t have a home, but I’m trusting 100% that God’s got a plan in all of this and I started to see a little bit of that this week. I have had to move in with my ex-husband and our 14-year-old son because I had nowhere else to live. And we were married for 25 years and divorced in January 2019. The last five years our marriage was non-existent marriage basically. And there’s a lot of hurt and anger and fear. He’s been sick for most of our marriage and it was consuming me to try to keep him alive and try to get him to be motivated to stay alive. Anyway, long story short, this past weekend we went out on a date together and our hearts are opening to one another again. So, those of you that are struggling in marriages, my marriage was dead DEAD dead but God. And now I expect that I’m gonna get a job very soon because I truly feel that this was God’s plan all along. How about if I have you guys live together because you have nowhere else to live and then you’ll see each other again and fall in love again and then you can get a job? So, my dear friends and family I love you. Thank you for your continued prayers. I still need a job, but I’m seen God working. I’m praying for all of our pilgrims and know that I travel with you and the prayers of all of our family travel with you. Love you guys. Have a great day. Bye.

Hi DAB family it’s Jennifer from Ohio and this is my second time calling now. I haven’t called since back in December when I asked you guys to pray for my mom who was diagnosed with glioblastoma multiform back in late October early November. She is doing well. So, thank you for your prayers but please continue to keep her lifted. However, that’s not the reason for my call today. The reason for my call today is because today I believe it’s the February the 19th, I heard Harold call in and say that he prayed the prayer of salvation. And Harold let me just tell you, you sent me into a worship and praise frenzy. That just made my heart rejoice. I have been praying for you and along with the other DABbers for you to accept Jesus Christ as your Savior and when I heard your call today it just lifted my spirit so high and I’m still on a high and that was probably about four or five hours ago when I listened to it. So, I just wanted to tell you thank you so much for joining our family. Thank you so much for calling in to let us know where you are. We are still here pushing you and we are here to encourage you and support you in both your attorneys, your journey here now as a member of the family and then also your journey to run your marathon. So, thank you so much for sharing that with us and we are still praying for you and I’m just…I’m just so happy, I’m so grateful. And it reminded me, your call today reminded me of Jesus when he talked about going after the one. I feel like he came for you and I’m so glad you’re here. Okay. Love you family. Bye-bye.

Hi, DABbers this is Dolly from Michigan and this prayer is for Arielle. Arielle I just want to let you know that your name means lion of God Arielle and I want to pray this prayer from Ephesians 3:16 over you and…and it’s the passion translation. And I pray that he would unveil within you Arielle the unlimited riches of His glory and favor until supernatural strength floods your innermost being with His divine might and explosive. Then by constantly using your faith the life of Christ will be released deep inside you and the resting place of His love will become the very source of your life. Then you will be empowered to discover what every holy one experiences, the great magnitude of the astonished love of Christ in all its dimensions. How deeply intimate and far-reaching is His love. How enduring and inclusive it is, endless love beyond measurement that transcends all our understanding. This extravagant love pours into you and you Arielle until you are filled to overflowing with the fullness of God. I just send blessing over you Arielle. And it’s not by…its by our faith that brings us to God, it’s not our works. Jesus completed those works for us on the cross and that’s how much God loves us. For God so loved the world that He sent His son Jesus to die for us for our sins. So, Sister Arielle…

Hi this is Cherry from Oklahoma and this call is for Arielle who called in on February the 18th. And Arielle you mentioned you’re new Christian and you just want to be loved and approved of and for God to like and be proud of you. And you weren’t really sure, you know, what to expect. And I just want to tell you, He says love God and obey His commandments and seek Him with your whole heart. And that’s what you’re doing. I mean, look at you. You’re going to Bible studies, you’re…you’re reading His word, you’re calling into the DAB. So, hey, you’re…you’re doing great. I know your thrilling God ecstatically. You’re just thrilling His heart. So, these feelings are part of the journey. I mean we all struggle with them to one degree or another. So, just, welcome aboard. And we love you and we are so excited to pull another person aboard this journey ship here in the word of God. And you just keep calling in. And also regarding you’re not feeling welcomed in that Bible study. I would just like to share with you, it may be the…the maturity level that group is in Christ…is that they are all new in this journey, in this walk and their failing insecurities and uncertainties about the other people in the group and just how they fit in. So, don’t let Satan lie to you and try to get you not to go and steal something that you need to be there for because you’re not really understanding and able to see the whole, you know, picture. And also, I will pray though that if this isn’t the right group that God will bring you to the right place. But until then, I think it’s more that you need to be there, and Satan just knows how much your thrilling God and he doesn’t like him to be happy. So, you…you keep going girl until something…

Hi this is in response to Arielle’s prayer who was recently…she said she was recently saved and she doesn’t know what to do and my advice to her is please give going to those Bible studies, keep going to church and listen to God’s word and rest in Him. And at the Bible studies and church, that’s where you need to fellowship, and you can…where others can encourage you and you can encourage others. And I’ll continue to pray for you. And, you know, that you are good enough and, you know, it’s not about, you know, doing, you know, being good enough for God, it’s He’ll meet you where you’re at. And there’s only one of you and He has a special plan for your life. And…and just be obedient and read His word and let it wash over you and let it transform your mind. I will continue to pray for you as every…lots of other people will do. And I hope to hear back from you with a good report. Thanks. Bye.

Leviticus 13

Regulations About Defiling Skin Diseases

13 The Lord said to Moses and Aaron, “When anyone has a swelling(A) or a rash or a shiny spot(B) on their skin that may be a defiling skin disease,[a](C) they must be brought to Aaron the priest(D) or to one of his sons[b] who is a priest. The priest is to examine the sore on the skin, and if the hair in the sore has turned white and the sore appears to be more than skin deep, it is a defiling skin disease. When the priest examines that person, he shall pronounce them ceremonially unclean.(E) If the shiny spot(F) on the skin is white but does not appear to be more than skin deep and the hair in it has not turned white, the priest is to isolate the affected person for seven days.(G) On the seventh day(H) the priest is to examine them,(I) and if he sees that the sore is unchanged and has not spread in the skin, he is to isolate them for another seven days. On the seventh day the priest is to examine them again, and if the sore has faded and has not spread in the skin, the priest shall pronounce them clean;(J) it is only a rash. They must wash their clothes,(K) and they will be clean.(L) But if the rash does spread in their skin after they have shown themselves to the priest to be pronounced clean, they must appear before the priest again.(M) The priest is to examine that person, and if the rash has spread in the skin, he shall pronounce them unclean; it is a defiling skin disease.

“When anyone has a defiling skin disease, they must be brought to the priest. 10 The priest is to examine them, and if there is a white swelling in the skin that has turned the hair white and if there is raw flesh in the swelling, 11 it is a chronic skin disease(N) and the priest shall pronounce them unclean. He is not to isolate them, because they are already unclean.

12 “If the disease breaks out all over their skin and, so far as the priest can see, it covers all the skin of the affected person from head to foot, 13 the priest is to examine them, and if the disease has covered their whole body, he shall pronounce them clean. Since it has all turned white, they are clean. 14 But whenever raw flesh appears on them, they will be unclean. 15 When the priest sees the raw flesh, he shall pronounce them unclean. The raw flesh is unclean; they have a defiling disease.(O) 16 If the raw flesh changes and turns white, they must go to the priest. 17 The priest is to examine them, and if the sores have turned white, the priest shall pronounce the affected person clean;(P) then they will be clean.

18 “When someone has a boil(Q) on their skin and it heals, 19 and in the place where the boil was, a white swelling or reddish-white(R) spot(S) appears, they must present themselves to the priest. 20 The priest is to examine it, and if it appears to be more than skin deep and the hair in it has turned white, the priest shall pronounce that person unclean. It is a defiling skin disease(T) that has broken out where the boil was. 21 But if, when the priest examines it, there is no white hair in it and it is not more than skin deep and has faded, then the priest is to isolate them for seven days. 22 If it is spreading in the skin, the priest shall pronounce them unclean; it is a defiling disease. 23 But if the spot is unchanged and has not spread, it is only a scar from the boil, and the priest shall pronounce them clean.(U)

24 “When someone has a burn on their skin and a reddish-white or white spot appears in the raw flesh of the burn, 25 the priest is to examine the spot, and if the hair in it has turned white, and it appears to be more than skin deep, it is a defiling disease that has broken out in the burn. The priest shall pronounce them unclean; it is a defiling skin disease.(V) 26 But if the priest examines it and there is no white hair in the spot and if it is not more than skin deep and has faded, then the priest is to isolate them for seven days.(W) 27 On the seventh day the priest is to examine that person,(X) and if it is spreading in the skin, the priest shall pronounce them unclean; it is a defiling skin disease. 28 If, however, the spot is unchanged and has not spread in the skin but has faded, it is a swelling from the burn, and the priest shall pronounce them clean; it is only a scar from the burn.(Y)

29 “If a man or woman has a sore on their head(Z) or chin, 30 the priest is to examine the sore, and if it appears to be more than skin deep and the hair in it is yellow and thin, the priest shall pronounce them unclean; it is a defiling skin disease on the head or chin. 31 But if, when the priest examines the sore, it does not seem to be more than skin deep and there is no black hair in it, then the priest is to isolate the affected person for seven days.(AA) 32 On the seventh day the priest is to examine the sore,(AB) and if it has not spread and there is no yellow hair in it and it does not appear to be more than skin deep, 33 then the man or woman must shave themselves, except for the affected area, and the priest is to keep them isolated another seven days. 34 On the seventh day the priest is to examine the sore,(AC) and if it has not spread in the skin and appears to be no more than skin deep, the priest shall pronounce them clean. They must wash their clothes, and they will be clean.(AD) 35 But if the sore does spread in the skin after they are pronounced clean, 36 the priest is to examine them, and if he finds that the sore has spread in the skin, he does not need to look for yellow hair; they are unclean.(AE) 37 If, however, the sore is unchanged so far as the priest can see, and if black hair has grown in it, the affected person is healed. They are clean, and the priest shall pronounce them clean.

38 “When a man or woman has white spots on the skin, 39 the priest is to examine them, and if the spots are dull white, it is a harmless rash that has broken out on the skin; they are clean.

40 “A man who has lost his hair and is bald(AF) is clean. 41 If he has lost his hair from the front of his scalp and has a bald forehead, he is clean. 42 But if he has a reddish-white sore on his bald head or forehead, it is a defiling disease breaking out on his head or forehead. 43 The priest is to examine him, and if the swollen sore on his head or forehead is reddish-white like a defiling skin disease, 44 the man is diseased and is unclean. The priest shall pronounce him unclean because of the sore on his head.

45 “Anyone with such a defiling disease must wear torn clothes,(AG) let their hair be unkempt,[c] cover the lower part of their face(AH) and cry out, ‘Unclean! Unclean!’(AI) 46 As long as they have the disease they remain unclean. They must live alone; they must live outside the camp.(AJ)

Regulations About Defiling Molds

47 “As for any fabric that is spoiled with a defiling mold—any woolen or linen clothing, 48 any woven or knitted material of linen or wool, any leather or anything made of leather— 49 if the affected area in the fabric, the leather, the woven or knitted material, or any leather article, is greenish or reddish, it is a defiling mold and must be shown to the priest.(AK) 50 The priest is to examine the affected area(AL) and isolate the article for seven days. 51 On the seventh day he is to examine it,(AM) and if the mold has spread in the fabric, the woven or knitted material, or the leather, whatever its use, it is a persistent defiling mold; the article is unclean.(AN) 52 He must burn the fabric, the woven or knitted material of wool or linen, or any leather article that has been spoiled; because the defiling mold is persistent, the article must be burned.(AO)

53 “But if, when the priest examines it, the mold has not spread in the fabric, the woven or knitted material, or the leather article, 54 he shall order that the spoiled article be washed. Then he is to isolate it for another seven days. 55 After the article has been washed, the priest is to examine it again, and if the mold has not changed its appearance, even though it has not spread, it is unclean. Burn it, no matter which side of the fabric has been spoiled. 56 If, when the priest examines it, the mold has faded after the article has been washed, he is to tear the spoiled part out of the fabric, the leather, or the woven or knitted material. 57 But if it reappears in the fabric, in the woven or knitted material, or in the leather article, it is a spreading mold; whatever has the mold must be burned. 58 Any fabric, woven or knitted material, or any leather article that has been washed and is rid of the mold, must be washed again. Then it will be clean.”

59 These are the regulations concerning defiling molds in woolen or linen clothing, woven or knitted material, or any leather article, for pronouncing them clean or unclean.

Mark 6:1-29

A Prophet Without Honor(A)

Jesus left there and went to his hometown,(B) accompanied by his disciples. When the Sabbath came,(C) he began to teach in the synagogue,(D) and many who heard him were amazed.(E)

“Where did this man get these things?” they asked. “What’s this wisdom that has been given him? What are these remarkable miracles he is performing? Isn’t this the carpenter? Isn’t this Mary’s son and the brother of James, Joseph,[a] Judas and Simon?(F) Aren’t his sisters here with us?” And they took offense at him.(G)

Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his own town, among his relatives and in his own home.”(H) He could not do any miracles there, except lay his hands on(I) a few sick people and heal them. He was amazed at their lack of faith.

Jesus Sends Out the Twelve(J)

Then Jesus went around teaching from village to village.(K) Calling the Twelve to him,(L) he began to send them out two by two(M) and gave them authority over impure spirits.(N)

These were his instructions: “Take nothing for the journey except a staff—no bread, no bag, no money in your belts. Wear sandals but not an extra shirt. 10 Whenever you enter a house, stay there until you leave that town. 11 And if any place will not welcome you or listen to you, leave that place and shake the dust off your feet(O) as a testimony against them.”

12 They went out and preached that people should repent.(P) 13 They drove out many demons and anointed many sick people with oil(Q) and healed them.

John the Baptist Beheaded(R)(S)

14 King Herod heard about this, for Jesus’ name had become well known. Some were saying,[b] “John the Baptist(T) has been raised from the dead, and that is why miraculous powers are at work in him.”

15 Others said, “He is Elijah.”(U)

And still others claimed, “He is a prophet,(V) like one of the prophets of long ago.”(W)

16 But when Herod heard this, he said, “John, whom I beheaded, has been raised from the dead!”

17 For Herod himself had given orders to have John arrested, and he had him bound and put in prison.(X) He did this because of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife, whom he had married. 18 For John had been saying to Herod, “It is not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife.”(Y) 19 So Herodias nursed a grudge against John and wanted to kill him. But she was not able to, 20 because Herod feared John and protected him, knowing him to be a righteous and holy man.(Z) When Herod heard John, he was greatly puzzled[c]; yet he liked to listen to him.

21 Finally the opportune time came. On his birthday Herod gave a banquet(AA) for his high officials and military commanders and the leading men of Galilee.(AB) 22 When the daughter of[d] Herodias came in and danced, she pleased Herod and his dinner guests.

The king said to the girl, “Ask me for anything you want, and I’ll give it to you.” 23 And he promised her with an oath, “Whatever you ask I will give you, up to half my kingdom.”(AC)

24 She went out and said to her mother, “What shall I ask for?”

“The head of John the Baptist,” she answered.

25 At once the girl hurried in to the king with the request: “I want you to give me right now the head of John the Baptist on a platter.”

26 The king was greatly distressed, but because of his oaths and his dinner guests, he did not want to refuse her. 27 So he immediately sent an executioner with orders to bring John’s head. The man went, beheaded John in the prison, 28 and brought back his head on a platter. He presented it to the girl, and she gave it to her mother. 29 On hearing of this, John’s disciples came and took his body and laid it in a tomb.

Psalm 39

Psalm 39[a]

For the director of music. For Jeduthun. A psalm of David.

I said, “I will watch my ways(A)
and keep my tongue from sin;(B)
I will put a muzzle on my mouth(C)
while in the presence of the wicked.”
So I remained utterly silent,(D)
not even saying anything good.
But my anguish(E) increased;
my heart grew hot(F) within me.
While I meditated,(G) the fire(H) burned;
then I spoke with my tongue:

“Show me, Lord, my life’s end
and the number of my days;(I)
let me know how fleeting(J) my life is.(K)
You have made my days(L) a mere handbreadth;
the span of my years is as nothing before you.
Everyone is but a breath,(M)
even those who seem secure.[b]

“Surely everyone goes around(N) like a mere phantom;(O)
in vain they rush about,(P) heaping up wealth(Q)
without knowing whose it will finally be.(R)

“But now, Lord, what do I look for?
My hope is in you.(S)
Save me(T) from all my transgressions;(U)
do not make me the scorn(V) of fools.
I was silent;(W) I would not open my mouth,(X)
for you are the one who has done this.(Y)
10 Remove your scourge from me;
I am overcome by the blow(Z) of your hand.(AA)
11 When you rebuke(AB) and discipline(AC) anyone for their sin,
you consume(AD) their wealth like a moth(AE)
surely everyone is but a breath.(AF)

12 “Hear my prayer, Lord,
listen to my cry for help;(AG)
do not be deaf(AH) to my weeping.(AI)
I dwell with you as a foreigner,(AJ)
a stranger,(AK) as all my ancestors were.(AL)
13 Look away from me, that I may enjoy life again
before I depart and am no more.”(AM)

Leviticus 11:1-12:8, Mark 5:21-43, Psalms 38:1-22, Proverbs 10:8-9

Today is the 21st day of February, welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I am Brian, welcome to the Dead Sea. That’s where we are now, the lowest point on earth. So, we could…we could for sure safely say it’s all uphill from here. And it’s great to be here with you today as we continue our pilgrimage through the land of the Bible. And we completed day two yesterday and I’ll…I’ll share that with you in a little while but let’s go ahead and center ourselves and orient ourselves to God through His word. And we’ll be continuing our journey through the book of Leviticus today by reading chapters 11 and 12 and we’re reading from the new International Version this week.

Commentary:

Okay. You guys remember like a couple weeks ago we were talking about the law because we were entering into, you know, the…the actual giving of the law and that’s kind of where we are now. So, were talking about that and we were talking about the letter of the law and the Spirit of the law, which is a theme that the apostle Paul speaks heavily about, but we have a really good example of this today. So, in the book of Leviticus the children of Israel are in the wilderness, which is something that those of us who are in the land of the Bible, like we’ve been experiencing this. So, we now know what this looks like, and we now know what they were up against. So, in today’s reading we have blood issues, special female blood issues. So, yeah, I mean the kinds of things we want to talk about every day. But this is childbirth and monthly flow issues. And, so, this would make her unclean. And, so, there was this way then to become ceremonially clean over a period of time and some hygiene and stuff. And, so, like we could be like, “this is…what’s going on here? What’s this in the Bible for?” But if you’re in the wilderness and there’s a million of you and there’s no hospital, right, like there’s no 24-hour clinic anywhere. There’s nothing like that. Then the flow of blood, like that in this day and age, that’s a biohazard. So, there’s practical reasons for some of the things that are going on here that we can…we can go like, “well that’s kind of constricting…well that’s kind of strict…well that’s kind of…” but if you lived in the desert and there…like none of the conveniences that you…that we take for granted even existed. You get a sense of okay, “yeah I can see why we would really, really want to keep some things tight because we don’t want diseases spread throughout this entire community. Like, this could be devastating. So yeah, we gotta…like if we’re gonna be a culture we have to have ways of…of watching out for each other. And, so, that makes sense. And then there’s these provisions of becoming ceremonially clean and restored into community and having the ability to worship with the community, enter into God’s presence.

So, like let’s assume for a couple thousand years and land ourselves in the first century in Jesus time and we have this interesting encounter with a woman who was bleeding. And she had been bleeding for 12 years, which means for 12 years she had been ceremonially unclean. That’s the letter of the law. So, kept outside of community worship, kind of kept outside of the presence of God because of uncleanness, perpetual uncleanness. So, we have the letter of the law and then we have Jesus, God incarnate, and this unclean woman touches Him. That then makes Him unclean too. And He knows it’s happened, so He stops, and He starts looking around for who touched Him. And she is terrified now because the implications are profound. There’s a crowd. She made a rabbi unclean. Anything can happen here. So’s she’s trembling with fear and she comes, and she kneels before Him and tells Him everything. This is a woman who’s unclean. By the letter of the law she should be nowhere near Jesus. And if it were God’s intention to keep unclean people away from them, then He should have stopped the whole thing and said, “who touched me” and…and then had her punished for breaking the law. That’s not what He did. That’s not what God incarnate in the person of Jesus did. She was healed. She could made clean. She could be fully restored. The letter of the law would’ve kept her outside and an unclean state until somehow, she stopped bleeding as if she could do that because she’d done everything she could to become clean. Her faith made her whole and God was there to tell her, “go in peace daughter.” That’s the spirit of the law and hopefully that gives us some context as we continue working our way through the law, of understanding that laws can be rules that are meant not to be broken, but underneath them is a reason. If the reason is forgotten, then the law is about control and power. And we can see in Jesus today that’s not what God’s intentions are or were.

Prayer:

Father, we thank you for your word and we thank you for all that it brings into our lives, all the things that it gives us to consider and think about and contemplate and meditate upon. We thank you for that. And in the story that we read today, we see so clearly your heart toward your children but we have to confess that we are often guilty of trying to be the keepers of the law and we look at what everybody else is doing and what they’re breaking and we’ve lost the plot. We forgot that there’s a Spirit here. And the reason for all of this is to draw us back together with you so that we might have life. So, come Holy Spirit into all of this we pray and we ask in Jesus’ name, Amen.

Announcements:

Okay, so we are here in the land of the Bible on our 2020 pilgrimage and this would be our…third day…third day I think. Yeah, I think that’s right. And yeah, we’ve been in the desert, we’ve been in the wilderness since we departed. We’ve been wandering around and I’m not sure it quite feels like 40 years yet but we…we’ve been in the desert. We’ve had this experience. And so, we ended up at the Dead Sea yesterday and that…and that was fun but…but when we left Eliot, when we left the Red Sea yesterday we came up into the wilderness and we were able to go to a place called Timnah where there’s some very ancient Egyptian ruins. And this is a place that it’s believed that Solomon mined copper, like mined minerals down in this area. And, so, there’s some connections there. But there’s also a scaled…a scale size replica of the tabernacle.

So, the children of Israel are wandering in the wilderness and they have this tabernacle for the worship of the Lord and it’s sort of the center of their culture and community and that will be replaced by the temple at a later time but this is this portable temple basically that travels around with them. God’s signifying, He will be with them, He will be among them. And, so, we got to see that. And just…just seeing it is…is enough, like to go like, “here actually in the desert that we’re talking about, this life size replica…like I can put myself in the position.” But then to go in and actually experience it, to…to move, you know, into the outer courtyard, and then move into the holy place, move toward the mostly holy place, like to do all of these things and put yourself in this position brings an enormous amount of context. It’s so helpful to just…to begin to sew through the threads of redemption that weave their way through all of the stories of the Bible. So…so that was great.

So. from there then we had to drive a couple of hours north and descending toward the lowest part of the earth, which is the Dead Sea, but we got to visit a place called Masada, which is a very ancient stronghold, dates back at least to the Herodian period because so many of the archaeological things there are from Herod’s time, but it had been a stronghold, probably for a long time. It's…when you’re up there you can see like how impenetrable the whole thing is. You have to ride like a cable car up to get up there. I mean you can run up there, but you gotta be in extraordinary shape and have plenty of time. So, it’s just a…yeah…just a fantastic place. And there’s just unbelievable stories that…that are really identifying stories for the Hebrew people that, especially from the time of the destruction of Jerusalem. So, we remember Jesus predicting the destruction of Jerusalem…of the temple and we know…and we know that that happened a couple decades after…after His ministry was completed. And, so, Jerusalem was destroyed by the Romans because of rebellion. And, so, the rebels…you know, once…once the tides have turned and the Romans…Romans have decided they’re gonna crush this, that was pretty much what they planned to do, level the whole thing. And, so, rebels would, you know, escape. And Masada was one of the last places of stronghold and those…once the Romans were about to breach, once they were about to come in, then, you know, the people had a choice of freedom by death basically or slavery and torture. And, so, there were many deaths. But anyway, it’s…it’s just really a remarkable place. But the views…the views of the Dead Sea and across to Jordan and of the vastness of the wilderness are spectacular from there. So, that that was that was enjoyable.

And then we made our way to the Dead Sea and we worked our way down to the to the shore there and…and just talked for a little bit about where we were and what we’d been through in the last couple of days and how to aim our hearts for the evening a little bit. And then it was that it was a part…a mud party at the at the Dead Sea. So, I mean the Dead Sea is really…you can float in it and that’s an understatement. Like you pretty much have to float in it. It’s really, really super dense. But man, it does something to your skin. I can put my…my hands in the Dead Sea and take a them out and all of a sudden like…like I’m…I’m like a kid again. And, so, it’s always a fun, fun, fun, fun time.

And, so, that's…that’s kind of where we are in the adventure and we’ll be continuing our journey North today and there is a lot to do. This is a full day but by the time we end the day we will be in the Galilea.

So, thank you for your continued prayers. It is coveted, it is needed. It is what sustains us. I believe that. So, continued prayers over the buses and vehicles and the logistics and the technology and the people and the weather and the health and stamina is…everything that goes into this, we thank you. It makes a world of difference for us to know that, yeah, that thousands and thousands and thousands are praying for us, but are also with us in Spirit….like that even though we can be here representing this community, this is a virtual thing and we’re all in this together. So, thank you.

If you want to partner with the Daily Audio Bible you can do that at dailyaudiobible.com as well. There’s a link on the homepage and I thank you for those who have clicked that link over the years, well from the bottom of my heart. We wouldn’t be here if we weren’t in this together. If you’re using the app, you can press the Give button in the upper right-hand corner or, if you prefer, the mailing address is PO Box 1996 Spring Hill Tennessee 37174.

And, as always, if you have a prayer request or comment 877-942-4253 is the number to dial or you can hit the Hotline button in the app and begin to share from there.

Also reminding you if…if you’re intrigued, if you’re like, “I want to do this, I…I want to go on that journey” we have plans to come back next year. Registration for that pilgrimage is open now. You can find it at dailyaudiobible.com in the Initiatives section. You can also find it in the app, just click that little drawer icon in the upper left-hand corner and it will open a drawer and you’ll see the Initiatives section. So, you can find out all…find out all about it there. These journeys are usually almost full if not full by the time we return. So, take a look. Love to…love to see you next year in Jerusalem.

And I guess…I think that’s it for today. Wait…that’s all for today. This Saturday, this Saturday we will be doing a Facebook Live from the Sea of Galilee. Yeah, that’s just a couple of days from now. So, we all gather and it’s kind of like a little debrief about, you know, what we’ve experienced so far and then we also Facebook Live and just kinda let us tell you the story of what it’s like to be here, what we’re experiencing, what we’re seeing and then take some questions coming in from you as you’re watching and just about what’s going on. So, that’s always a fun time. It’s about an hour long. So, it will be 7:30 PM local time, that's…that’s the time in Israel. For those of you back in the United States that’s like 1:30 PM on the East Coast, 12:30 PM in central time where Nashville is and 11:30 AM in the mountain zone and 10:30 AM on the West Coast. And then if you are in London, I believe that will be 530 PM. if you’re in Australia I’m not sure when…it may even be a different day, but all you would need to do is like Google the difference between where you are and Tel Aviv and find that kinda time difference and then you can figure it out and we’ll be going live. So that’s always a blast. So, looking forward to that. Hopefully you can attend and be there too

And I think that's…I think that’s it for today. I think that’s it for today. I’m Brian I love you and I’ll be waiting for you here tomorrow.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Hi Daily Audio Bible this is Alyssa from New Jersey I’m calling for the family of Diane. I just want to let you know I’ve been praying and I’m so sorry for your loss. Praying for the boys. I believe that Jeremiah 29:11, “for I know the plans I have for you says the Lord, plans to give you a future and a hope.” And I just want to encourage you to go through the grieving process and know that according to Thessalonians it says that “we will be again together, we will…the dead in Christ will rise first and we will rise to meet them in the air and together we shall be forever with the Lord.” So, I know that we have to go through the grief process, even Jesus wept. And just know that Diane finished her race, that she heard, “well done good and faithful servant”, and that we can go on letting her be an inspiration to us all to keep our faith to the end and to keep our eye on the prize to the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. So, just want to let you know that I was deeply moved by Diane’s initial prayer and then the prayers thereafter. And I just want to let the boys know that God is always with you and that you have the body of Christ around you to help you through this time. I’m also autistic. I have high functioning autism. So, you touch a special place in my heart. So, you’re in my prayers. I love you.

Hello, this is Kim in Las Vegas and I just wanted to call in and say I’m doing so much better this…this time and it was only a couple months ago that I called but all the depression issues, confusion issues, and when I thought that the growth that turned out to be an enlarged uterus was cancer, which it wasn’t. But through that whole thing Christ was talking to me and the six weeks on  that film in LA I just had to sit and wonder what was going on with me, why I get so down and depressed and just got to spent a lot of time with Christ and a lot of time figuring myself out. And to say that God has filled me with joy is wholly His doing and it’s also help from you guys, everybody who’s been praying, everybody who calls in to pray because I need that too, I need to have people to pray for. And the fact that you guys call in and share that is important because we all need to pray for each other. We need to spend time in prayer and while we want to be selfless and pray for others all the time it’s important that we pray for ourselves as well. So, remember that everybody who calls in. We’re praying for you as well but I hope you’re praying for yourself because that’s important. We need to pray for ourselves and each other. But anybody struggling through darkness and pain right now, know that you can come out on the other end. I didn’t feel like I could even though in the back of my mind I didn’t know I could come out in the end it just didn’t feel like it. But Christ will fill you with joy. You just have to make it through whatever obstacle is in the way and walk into that next stage of life. Christ is with you. You may feel lonely and dark but He’s there. So, anybody who’s feeling that pain, you’ll come out on the end. We love you. And this is Kim in Las Vegas. Thank you.

Hi DAB family is His Welsh girl. I’ve been listening to the community prayer and I just have this picture of, you know, any time day or night when we are listening to the Daily Audio Bible that we are praying for our brothers and sisters all around the world. And, so, it’s just…it’s just a beautiful thing and I just want to thank God that He’s provided this, such a source of joy for us. But also, I just feel quite sorrowful because a few days ago I heard about Diana Davis. And, so Michael and Elijah, please know that we are praying for you and we hold you…we hold you in our prayers every day and your family. Candace from Oregon, thank you for singing so beautifully. I know that my redeemer liveth for Charisse and for her husband Rubin who passed away in early January. So, just Charisse please know that we’re praying for you. And Kristi from Florida, I’m praying for you today on the 14th of February, Valentine’s Day because I know that you’re moving from Florida to Ohio so to be close to your family because of your sister passing away. And I am so, so sorry about your grandfather too. So, please know that that we are praying for you and be…and know that Jesus is so close to you. Thank you, family. And God bless.

Hi Daily Audio Bible this is Julie from Maryland and I have a little story about how awesome God’s timing is. I am Jewish and I am also born again. I came to Christ in 2012. When I first came to Christ I…I felt like I had to announce my Jewishness and embrace Christianity and now I’m realizing that the devil is a liar and my identity is my identity and I am a Jew who believes that Jesus Christ is the son of God and it’s changing my life every day. And what’s really amazing is, recently…so I had a baht mitzvah when I was 13, which is a coming-of-age ceremony for Jewish girl, bar mitzvah for a boy, baht mitzvah for a girl. And I’ve been exploring my identity and I’ve been…I remembered that the portion of the Torah that I read during my baht mitzvah was about…was about the building of the tabernacle. And, so, when Brian was talking about how it must be boring listening to the discussions of the plans for the tabernacle, I was actually getting really excited because I was trying to figure out, “oh I wonder what was my part.” Long story short, I was going through some old books and old pictures and I found my Torah portion and I found my speech and it was the same part of Exodus that we had read that day in Daily Audio Bible and I was floored. And not only that the beginning of it was about the Sabbath and I recently started observing my own Sabbath. But thank God that…that Jesus has come so that we can be united with Him and we don’t need a day, we can just come to Him and rest of all times. So, I just wanted to share that story with you all. I hope you have a wonderful, wonderful day, afternoon, or evening.

Good morning DABbers this is Fonny from Northern California. This is a call in response to anonymous who identified herself as pink paint as an artist and its response to her beautiful heart cry for prayer and her step of faith in venturing into the community to request prayer for herself at this time. It’s apparently a very difficult time for her. I…I just admire your…your beautiful expression of the understanding colors. As you shared your request, as I was listening this morning, I was watching a beautiful pink sunrise come up over the horizon and I am…I am praying for you sister. I understand tough times and struggles. Sometimes joy and sorrow are two sides of the same coin. But I’ll be praying for you that God will come near, that He’ll come close to you, that He’ll…He is the one that draws near to the brokenhearted and He will comfort you and He will surround you. I pray for strength for you that you will meditate on the word and that you’ll be able to see a new day dawning. Love you my dear. Bye-bye.

Hey everybody this is Jared the Encourager. Pink Paint, I just heard your message and your description of the hopelessness you’re feeling right now. And I’m an artist as well and your description of God’s ability to use other colors and colors we don’t even exist…that we don’t even know exist in heaven and hell, even how we are all colors that come together is just such a beautiful description of the body of Christ and something that really grabbed onto me. And I’m just in tears. I, you know, my name is Jared the Encourager, I know that’s a gift God has given me, but I haven’t called in much over the last couple months because I’m…I’m in a similar place where I’ve just been really battling hopelessness. And, so, I want you to know that you’re not alone. And whatever color I am is being used by God in His masterpiece to build together His body and up courage…and encourage and uplift no matter what you’re going through. Your birthday is exactly one month after mine. Anyway, I’m praying for you and I’m praying for the rest of you, reminding myself and hopefully encouraging the rest of you along with me that there’s always something to be thankful for no matter what. Love you guys. Take care.

Hi family this is his little Cherry in Canada and I heard Pink Paint’s message and I know that it resonated with so many of us. Pink Paint you are going to get a lot of responses, a lot of prayer. You have such a beautiful heart and such unique way of expressing yourself. I love the artistry that shines from your…your prayer request. You’re such an artist you can’t even leave a prayer request without it becoming a poem. So, I bless you and I just want to pray for you and let you know that Jesus is so enamored with you. He loves every little thing about you. You make Him giggle so much in ways that you would surprise you. I just see and feel His delight in you. You know what? You are beautiful. You are breathtakingly beautiful and I think if you could see the colors that refract from your heart you would be overwhelmed and amazed because there’s definitely a lot of pink going on but there’s a whole lot more happening in and through and beyond just that obvious color. This may seem like a strange message but I love you and so does He.

Leviticus 11-12

Clean and Unclean Food(A)

11 The Lord said to Moses and Aaron, “Say to the Israelites: ‘Of all the animals that live on land, these are the ones you may eat:(B) You may eat any animal that has a divided hoof and that chews the cud.

“‘There are some that only chew the cud or only have a divided hoof, but you must not eat them.(C) The camel, though it chews the cud, does not have a divided hoof; it is ceremonially unclean for you. The hyrax, though it chews the cud, does not have a divided hoof; it is unclean for you. The rabbit, though it chews the cud, does not have a divided hoof; it is unclean for you. And the pig,(D) though it has a divided hoof, does not chew the cud; it is unclean for you. You must not eat their meat or touch their carcasses; they are unclean for you.(E)

“‘Of all the creatures living in the water of the seas and the streams you may eat any that have fins and scales. 10 But all creatures in the seas or streams that do not have fins and scales—whether among all the swarming things or among all the other living creatures in the water—you are to regard as unclean.(F) 11 And since you are to regard them as unclean, you must not eat their meat; you must regard their carcasses as unclean.(G) 12 Anything living in the water that does not have fins and scales is to be regarded as unclean by you.(H)

13 “‘These are the birds you are to regard as unclean and not eat because they are unclean: the eagle,[a] the vulture, the black vulture, 14 the red kite, any kind(I) of black kite, 15 any kind of raven,(J) 16 the horned owl, the screech owl, the gull, any kind of hawk, 17 the little owl, the cormorant, the great owl, 18 the white owl,(K) the desert owl, the osprey, 19 the stork,(L) any kind(M) of heron, the hoopoe and the bat.(N)

20 “‘All flying insects that walk on all fours are to be regarded as unclean by you.(O) 21 There are, however, some flying insects that walk on all fours that you may eat: those that have jointed legs for hopping on the ground. 22 Of these you may eat any kind of locust,(P) katydid, cricket or grasshopper. 23 But all other flying insects that have four legs you are to regard as unclean.

24 “‘You will make yourselves unclean by these;(Q) whoever touches their carcasses will be unclean till evening.(R) 25 Whoever picks up one of their carcasses must wash their clothes,(S) and they will be unclean till evening.(T)

26 “‘Every animal that does not have a divided hoof or that does not chew the cud is unclean for you; whoever touches the carcass of any of them will be unclean. 27 Of all the animals that walk on all fours, those that walk on their paws are unclean for you; whoever touches their carcasses will be unclean till evening. 28 Anyone who picks up their carcasses must wash their clothes, and they will be unclean till evening.(U) These animals are unclean for you.

29 “‘Of the animals that move along the ground, these are unclean for you:(V) the weasel, the rat,(W) any kind of great lizard, 30 the gecko, the monitor lizard, the wall lizard, the skink and the chameleon. 31 Of all those that move along the ground, these are unclean for you. Whoever touches them when they are dead will be unclean till evening. 32 When one of them dies and falls on something, that article, whatever its use, will be unclean, whether it is made of wood, cloth, hide or sackcloth.(X) Put it in water; it will be unclean till evening, and then it will be clean. 33 If one of them falls into a clay pot, everything in it will be unclean, and you must break the pot.(Y) 34 Any food you are allowed to eat that has come into contact with water from any such pot is unclean, and any liquid that is drunk from such a pot is unclean. 35 Anything that one of their carcasses falls on becomes unclean; an oven or cooking pot must be broken up. They are unclean, and you are to regard them as unclean. 36 A spring, however, or a cistern for collecting water remains clean, but anyone who touches one of these carcasses is unclean. 37 If a carcass falls on any seeds that are to be planted, they remain clean. 38 But if water has been put on the seed and a carcass falls on it, it is unclean for you.

39 “‘If an animal that you are allowed to eat dies,(Z) anyone who touches its carcass(AA) will be unclean till evening. 40 Anyone who eats some of its carcass(AB) must wash their clothes, and they will be unclean till evening.(AC) Anyone who picks up the carcass must wash their clothes, and they will be unclean till evening.

41 “‘Every creature that moves along the ground is to be regarded as unclean; it is not to be eaten. 42 You are not to eat any creature that moves along the ground, whether it moves on its belly or walks on all fours or on many feet; it is unclean. 43 Do not defile yourselves by any of these creatures.(AD) Do not make yourselves unclean by means of them or be made unclean by them. 44 I am the Lord your God;(AE) consecrate yourselves(AF) and be holy,(AG) because I am holy.(AH) Do not make yourselves unclean by any creature that moves along the ground.(AI) 45 I am the Lord, who brought you up out of Egypt(AJ) to be your God;(AK) therefore be holy, because I am holy.(AL)

46 “‘These are the regulations concerning animals, birds, every living thing that moves about in the water and every creature that moves along the ground. 47 You must distinguish between the unclean and the clean, between living creatures that may be eaten and those that may not be eaten.(AM)’”

Purification After Childbirth

12 The Lord said to Moses, “Say to the Israelites: ‘A woman who becomes pregnant and gives birth to a son will be ceremonially unclean for seven days, just as she is unclean during her monthly period.(AN) On the eighth day(AO) the boy is to be circumcised.(AP) Then the woman must wait thirty-three days to be purified from her bleeding. She must not touch anything sacred or go to the sanctuary until the days of her purification are over. If she gives birth to a daughter, for two weeks the woman will be unclean, as during her period. Then she must wait sixty-six days to be purified from her bleeding.

“‘When the days of her purification for a son or daughter are over,(AQ) she is to bring to the priest at the entrance to the tent of meeting a year-old lamb(AR) for a burnt offering and a young pigeon or a dove for a sin offering.[b](AS) He shall offer them before the Lord to make atonement for her, and then she will be ceremonially clean from her flow of blood.

“‘These are the regulations for the woman who gives birth to a boy or a girl. But if she cannot afford a lamb, she is to bring two doves or two young pigeons,(AT) one for a burnt offering and the other for a sin offering.(AU) In this way the priest will make atonement for her, and she will be clean.(AV)’”

Mark 5:21-43

Jesus Raises a Dead Girl and Heals a Sick Woman(A)

21 When Jesus had again crossed over by boat to the other side of the lake,(B) a large crowd gathered around him while he was by the lake.(C) 22 Then one of the synagogue leaders,(D) named Jairus, came, and when he saw Jesus, he fell at his feet. 23 He pleaded earnestly with him, “My little daughter is dying. Please come and put your hands on(E) her so that she will be healed and live.” 24 So Jesus went with him.

A large crowd followed and pressed around him. 25 And a woman was there who had been subject to bleeding(F) for twelve years. 26 She had suffered a great deal under the care of many doctors and had spent all she had, yet instead of getting better she grew worse. 27 When she heard about Jesus, she came up behind him in the crowd and touched his cloak, 28 because she thought, “If I just touch his clothes,(G) I will be healed.” 29 Immediately her bleeding stopped and she felt in her body that she was freed from her suffering.(H)

30 At once Jesus realized that power(I) had gone out from him. He turned around in the crowd and asked, “Who touched my clothes?”

31 “You see the people crowding against you,” his disciples answered, “and yet you can ask, ‘Who touched me?’

32 But Jesus kept looking around to see who had done it. 33 Then the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell at his feet and, trembling with fear, told him the whole truth. 34 He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has healed you.(J) Go in peace(K) and be freed from your suffering.”

35 While Jesus was still speaking, some people came from the house of Jairus, the synagogue leader.(L) “Your daughter is dead,” they said. “Why bother the teacher anymore?”

36 Overhearing[a] what they said, Jesus told him, “Don’t be afraid; just believe.”

37 He did not let anyone follow him except Peter, James and John the brother of James.(M) 38 When they came to the home of the synagogue leader,(N) Jesus saw a commotion, with people crying and wailing loudly. 39 He went in and said to them, “Why all this commotion and wailing? The child is not dead but asleep.”(O) 40 But they laughed at him.

After he put them all out, he took the child’s father and mother and the disciples who were with him, and went in where the child was. 41 He took her by the hand(P) and said to her, “Talitha koum!” (which means “Little girl, I say to you, get up!”).(Q) 42 Immediately the girl stood up and began to walk around (she was twelve years old). At this they were completely astonished. 43 He gave strict orders not to let anyone know about this,(R) and told them to give her something to eat.

Psalm 38

Psalm 38[a]

A psalm of David. A petition.

Lord, do not rebuke me in your anger
or discipline me in your wrath.(A)
Your arrows(B) have pierced me,
and your hand has come down on me.
Because of your wrath there is no health(C) in my body;
there is no soundness in my bones(D) because of my sin.
My guilt has overwhelmed(E) me
like a burden too heavy to bear.(F)

My wounds(G) fester and are loathsome(H)
because of my sinful folly.(I)
I am bowed down(J) and brought very low;
all day long I go about mourning.(K)
My back is filled with searing pain;(L)
there is no health(M) in my body.
I am feeble and utterly crushed;(N)
I groan(O) in anguish of heart.(P)

All my longings(Q) lie open before you, Lord;
my sighing(R) is not hidden from you.
10 My heart pounds,(S) my strength fails(T) me;
even the light has gone from my eyes.(U)
11 My friends and companions avoid me because of my wounds;(V)
my neighbors stay far away.
12 Those who want to kill me set their traps,(W)
those who would harm me talk of my ruin;(X)
all day long they scheme and lie.(Y)

13 I am like the deaf, who cannot hear,(Z)
like the mute, who cannot speak;
14 I have become like one who does not hear,
whose mouth can offer no reply.
15 Lord, I wait(AA) for you;
you will answer,(AB) Lord my God.

Leviticus 9:7-10:20, Mark 4:26-5:20, Psalms 37:30-40, Proverbs 10:6-7

Today is the 20th day of February, welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I am Brian it is great to be here with you today are coming to you from Eliot, which is the southernmost tip, southernmost city in the land of Israel. We journeyed through the wilderness yesterday all the way down here to the shores of the Red Sea, which is where we spent the night. And, so, obviously can’t go further south and stay in this country. So, we will begin journeying north today. We’ll talk about that in a little bit. But before we do, let's…let’s do what we’ve come here for. Let’s allow all of the cares of life…they won’t…they have a way of coming back…they won't…like they’re not going anywhere, we’re not gonna lose them…or…or maybe we are. Maybe we’re coming here every day to learn how to live. And, so, it’s good for us to just exhale the world and inhale the serenity and peace that comes from allowing the word of God just to wash over us. So, we’re reading from the New International Version this week, continuing through the book of Exodus. We’ll read chapter 9 verse 7 through 10 verse 20 today.

Commentary:

Okay. So, yesterday in the Gospel of Mark, Jesus is using an agricultural story about planting seed and it falling on different types of ground and so what happened to the seed because of the soil. And, so, in today’s readings He’s kinda continuing with…with that kind of agricultural motif or background but expanding it to…to encompass the entire kingdom of God. So…so He’s like, “the kingdom…the kingdom of God is like a farmer who scatters seed on the ground.” Then He’s explaining the growth of the plant, that it’s happening both day and night and the farmer doesn’t even know how it’s happening. It’s just happening. The growth is taking place as he waits for the harvest. And then He’s like, “the kingdom of heaven is like a tiny mustard seed, a tiny little seed but it…it sprouts up into the largest of all the garden plants.” Okay, let’s remember Jesus is describing the kingdom of God with these parables, with these metaphors. So, what then can we say about the kingdom of God? We could say that the kingdom is happening right now all the time, right, day and night. Like the farmer planted the seed and then day and night it grew, and the farmer didn’t know how. It just did because the seed and the soil collaborated. So, the kingdom is a collaboration between God and His image bearers on this planet - seed and soil, collaboration. And…and although it begins small, it grows and flourishes and gives life as we cultivate and participate, which brings us to the harvest. We could also say that Jesus is using a physical parable, a physical reality that people can understand to explain an inward process that is taking place because you can’t go to Walmart and buy seeds of the kingdom of God and then throw them out into the air and just see what sprouts up. The seeds of the word of God are spread into our lives and we collaborate by understanding the kind of soil that is in our hearts. And, so, we could also say the kingdom is here and now and we are in it because it is in us as we explored when we were going through the book of Matthew. This isn’t something we’re waiting for. This is something that’s happening. What we’re waiting for is for its fullness, for its fullness to be revealed. And so often where just like waiting…we’re just like…life is about waiting, right? Like, I’m here. I’m confused. I’m not exactly sure what’s going on. I believe in God and I believe this is all going somewhere but I’m here to wait to die and then I can understand or be involved somehow in this kingdom when we would wait our whole lives and miss it. It’s happening. It’s among us. It’s within us and the transformation isn’t for us to go to battle with the Romans or for us to defeat some kind of doctrine that we don’t agree with, its to be transformed from within by becoming good soil so that the kingdom can flourish within us and then we will know what to do with ourselves in this world. This is essentially what Jesus was trying to awaken people to, right? He’s looking for those with eyes to see and ears to hear. And, so, once again we get that opportunity. Do we have eyes to see, do we have ears to hear? If this kingdom is happening then I should be able to see it, I should be able to see the goodness of God sustaining everything in this world. I should be able to see it, but I’m so focused on the evil in this world. But if we have eyes to see and ears to hear we can’t look anywhere without seeing the presence of God in action and understanding that we are collaborating in it and that it is happening by transforming us from within.

Prayer:

Jesus, we invite you into that as we go through this day asking once again that your Holy Spirit would bring these things to mind and help us to contemplate on…contemplate on them as we move through this day. Give us eyes to see. We’re…we’re opening our eyes. We’re cleaning out our ears. We want to see this kingdom. We want to reveal it through our lives. So, come Holy Spirit into all of this we pray in the name of Jesus, we ask. Amen.

Announcements:

Okay. So, this is the day two of our…of our pilgrimage in the land of the Bible. So, our first day was yesterday. And we left Ashdod which sits right on the Mediterranean coast. It’s an ancient Philistine city. I’ve mentioned that before. We began to head south, moving into the transition zone into the desert and we visited a very ancient site called Beersheba. And it’s a southernmost boundary of ancient Israel right? It was from Dan to Beersheba. That’s pretty popular…popularly known. So, Beersheba is the southernmost point. So, we’ve reached that. And then we just kept going into the desert into the deep, deep wilderness and we had the opportunity to overlook the wilderness of Zin and just…there’s just a really, really great place to kind of get a look at the barrenness of the desert. It’s quite striking actually. It’s otherworldly. It’s very, very beautiful. So, we had some time throughout the day to get these vast vistas of empty barren wilderness and to just think about what that would be like because it’s hard for us to even wrap our minds around traveling as a caravan with a million people in the wilderness and it becomes very apparent we would not be…like our modern…we would not be prepared for that at all - no cars, no cell phones, no social…like there’s no way to post a selfie. Like, all things we’re just used to doing, like running to the convenience store to get some convenient food, none of that would be possible. And, so, you begin to see the…certainly the isolation of the wilderness, but the simple fact that God was deeply embedding into His people that there was no hope outside of Him. And, so, we had some time to just kind of think about our own wilderness experiences because I….so far in all of my years of life that I’ve been paying attention I haven’t met anybody who’s never had a wilderness experience of some sort and that a lot of us are going through them now, whether on this pilgrimage live here in the land of Israel or whether you’re virtually in this community. There’s all kinds of things going on all the time that we face. And usually all of our energy is spent trying to get out of the wilderness while ignoring what the wilderness might be saying to us, what we might need for our lives when we…when we exit it. And, so, that’s kind of…that’s kinda some of the things we’ve been thinking about as we’re traveling.

And we got to have lunch with the Bedouins, which is always a highlight just because it’s such a different experience. Like I can’t say it’s this unbelievably five-star dining experience with multiple courses and everything. It’s just engaging with a culture, a people that we would never really encounter outside of this part of the world in any way. And, yeah, there’s plenty of Bedouin people still kind of wandering in the wilderness, as it were.

And, yeah, so just continuing south, south, south, wilderness, wilderness, wilderness until we get to this little oasis where there is a kibbutz which is sort of like communal living…like where everybody is working and living for the community and sharing everything in common. And, so, these are dairy farmers. And, so, there’s this little shop and some of my favorite ice cream I’ve ever had in the world, I don’t know why, maybe just because it’s in Israel, but I’m not like a super big ice cream eater but every year I look forward to it…every year I even talk about it. And, so, it’s…it’s…so we get we get to stop and have it. We get to stop and have it again today. And, so, we did that and, you know, it’s a chance to stretch the legs a little bit, go to the bathroom and all that.

And then we…we made it down to Eliot to the shores of the Red Sea. And, yeah, that…that’s also just a really, really interesting point in this journey because we’re kind of…it just…it's…it’s a good place for this to sort of hit you that where…where we are because from that point you can look into Egypt, you can look across into Saudi Arabia, you can look across into the country of Jordan even as you’re standing in the…the nation of Israel and realize, yeah, I’m in the Middle East and this is the Red Sea and…and man this was…this was divided and the children at some point somewhere along this shoreline that stretches way, way, way further south into the Sinai Peninsula, somewhere along here they crossed…they crossed over. And, so, it’s like I’m in the Middle East and I’m in the Bible, like I’m standing in the book of Exodus right now, So, it's…yeah…and plus the jet lag and all the adrenaline and everything that just goes into day one. So, that’s what we did.

And then had some dinner and try to relax and get some rest and gear up for this day.

And yeah, so we’re the book of Leviticus and reading about all of these sacrifices at this…at this tabernacle that has been erected and it’s that these dimensions and it’s got these kinds of cloths and it’s like all of the specific details and instructions that we’ve been reading, today we’ll actually kinda get the chance to see that in person because there is…yeah….there’s a life-size replica out in the wilderness of the tabernacle. So…so yeah, there’s lots of instructions and lots of sacrifice and regulations and how to do this and how to do that. And as we mentioned, this this is the law. So, it’s not always the most rivetted…riveting reading but this is what will establish this culture in the wilderness that are the Hebrew people, that are Israel, ancient Israel. And, so, this is…this is what will shape them. And, so, we’ll kind of get a chance to step into that a little bit.

And then we’ll keep heading North but none of that’s happened yet so I can’t exactly tell you about it. I’ll have to tell you tomorrow.

Thank you for your continued prayers overall of us, over the buses, over the drivers, over the guides, over health, over whether, over logistics, over technology, over everything that is involved in keeping this going every day, even as we travel here internationally.

Leviticus 9:7-10:20

Moses said to Aaron, “Come to the altar and sacrifice your sin offering and your burnt offering and make atonement for yourself and the people;(A) sacrifice the offering that is for the people and make atonement for them, as the Lord has commanded.(B)

So Aaron came to the altar and slaughtered the calf as a sin offering(C) for himself. His sons brought the blood to him,(D) and he dipped his finger into the blood and put it on the horns of the altar; the rest of the blood he poured out at the base of the altar.(E) 10 On the altar he burned the fat, the kidneys and the long lobe of the liver from the sin offering, as the Lord commanded Moses; 11 the flesh and the hide(F) he burned up outside the camp.(G)

12 Then he slaughtered the burnt offering.(H) His sons handed him the blood,(I) and he splashed it against the sides of the altar. 13 They handed him the burnt offering piece by piece, including the head, and he burned them on the altar.(J) 14 He washed the internal organs and the legs and burned them on top of the burnt offering on the altar.(K)

15 Aaron then brought the offering that was for the people.(L) He took the goat for the people’s sin offering and slaughtered it and offered it for a sin offering as he did with the first one.

16 He brought the burnt offering and offered it in the prescribed way.(M) 17 He also brought the grain offering, took a handful of it and burned it on the altar in addition to the morning’s burnt offering.(N)

18 He slaughtered the ox and the ram as the fellowship offering for the people.(O) His sons handed him the blood, and he splashed it against the sides of the altar. 19 But the fat portions of the ox and the ram—the fat tail, the layer of fat, the kidneys and the long lobe of the liver— 20 these they laid on the breasts, and then Aaron burned the fat on the altar. 21 Aaron waved the breasts and the right thigh before the Lord as a wave offering,(P) as Moses commanded.

22 Then Aaron lifted his hands toward the people and blessed them.(Q) And having sacrificed the sin offering, the burnt offering and the fellowship offering, he stepped down.

23 Moses and Aaron then went into the tent of meeting.(R) When they came out, they blessed the people; and the glory of the Lord(S) appeared to all the people. 24 Fire(T) came out from the presence of the Lord and consumed the burnt offering and the fat portions on the altar. And when all the people saw it, they shouted for joy and fell facedown.(U)

The Death of Nadab and Abihu

10 Aaron’s sons Nadab and Abihu(V) took their censers,(W) put fire in them(X) and added incense;(Y) and they offered unauthorized fire before the Lord,(Z) contrary to his command.(AA) So fire came out(AB) from the presence of the Lord and consumed them,(AC) and they died before the Lord.(AD) Moses then said to Aaron, “This is what the Lord spoke of when he said:

“‘Among those who approach me(AE)
I will be proved holy;(AF)
in the sight of all the people
I will be honored.(AG)’”

Aaron remained silent.

Moses summoned Mishael and Elzaphan,(AH) sons of Aaron’s uncle Uzziel,(AI) and said to them, “Come here; carry your cousins outside the camp,(AJ) away from the front of the sanctuary.(AK) So they came and carried them, still in their tunics,(AL) outside the camp, as Moses ordered.

Then Moses said to Aaron and his sons Eleazar and Ithamar,(AM) “Do not let your hair become unkempt[a](AN) and do not tear your clothes,(AO) or you will die and the Lord will be angry with the whole community.(AP) But your relatives, all the Israelites, may mourn(AQ) for those the Lord has destroyed by fire. Do not leave the entrance to the tent of meeting(AR) or you will die, because the Lord’s anointing oil(AS) is on you.” So they did as Moses said.

Then the Lord said to Aaron, “You and your sons are not to drink wine(AT) or other fermented drink(AU) whenever you go into the tent of meeting, or you will die. This is a lasting ordinance(AV) for the generations to come, 10 so that you can distinguish between the holy and the common, between the unclean and the clean,(AW) 11 and so you can teach(AX) the Israelites all the decrees the Lord has given them through Moses.(AY)

12 Moses said to Aaron and his remaining sons, Eleazar and Ithamar, “Take the grain offering(AZ) left over from the food offerings prepared without yeast and presented to the Lord and eat it beside the altar,(BA) for it is most holy. 13 Eat it in the sanctuary area,(BB) because it is your share and your sons’ share of the food offerings presented to the Lord; for so I have been commanded.(BC) 14 But you and your sons and your daughters may eat the breast(BD) that was waved and the thigh that was presented. Eat them in a ceremonially clean place;(BE) they have been given to you and your children as your share of the Israelites’ fellowship offerings. 15 The thigh(BF) that was presented and the breast that was waved must be brought with the fat portions of the food offerings, to be waved before the Lord as a wave offering.(BG) This will be the perpetual share for you and your children, as the Lord has commanded.”

16 When Moses inquired about the goat of the sin offering[b](BH) and found that it had been burned up, he was angry with Eleazar and Ithamar, Aaron’s remaining sons, and asked, 17 “Why didn’t you eat the sin offering(BI) in the sanctuary area? It is most holy; it was given to you to take away the guilt(BJ) of the community by making atonement for them before the Lord. 18 Since its blood was not taken into the Holy Place,(BK) you should have eaten the goat in the sanctuary area, as I commanded.(BL)

19 Aaron replied to Moses, “Today they sacrificed their sin offering and their burnt offering(BM) before the Lord, but such things as this have happened to me. Would the Lord have been pleased if I had eaten the sin offering today?” 20 When Moses heard this, he was satisfied.

Mark 4:26-5:20

The Parable of the Growing Seed

26 He also said, “This is what the kingdom of God is like.(A) A man scatters seed on the ground. 27 Night and day, whether he sleeps or gets up, the seed sprouts and grows, though he does not know how. 28 All by itself the soil produces grain—first the stalk, then the head, then the full kernel in the head. 29 As soon as the grain is ripe, he puts the sickle to it, because the harvest has come.”(B)

The Parable of the Mustard Seed(C)

30 Again he said, “What shall we say the kingdom of God is like,(D) or what parable shall we use to describe it? 31 It is like a mustard seed, which is the smallest of all seeds on earth. 32 Yet when planted, it grows and becomes the largest of all garden plants, with such big branches that the birds can perch in its shade.”

33 With many similar parables Jesus spoke the word to them, as much as they could understand.(E) 34 He did not say anything to them without using a parable.(F) But when he was alone with his own disciples, he explained everything.

Jesus Calms the Storm(G)

35 That day when evening came, he said to his disciples, “Let us go over to the other side.” 36 Leaving the crowd behind, they took him along, just as he was, in the boat.(H) There were also other boats with him. 37 A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. 38 Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?”

39 He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind died down and it was completely calm.

40 He said to his disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?”(I)

41 They were terrified and asked each other, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!”

Jesus Restores a Demon-Possessed Man(J)(K)

They went across the lake to the region of the Gerasenes.[a] When Jesus got out of the boat,(L) a man with an impure spirit(M) came from the tombs to meet him. This man lived in the tombs, and no one could bind him anymore, not even with a chain. For he had often been chained hand and foot, but he tore the chains apart and broke the irons on his feet. No one was strong enough to subdue him. Night and day among the tombs and in the hills he would cry out and cut himself with stones.

When he saw Jesus from a distance, he ran and fell on his knees in front of him. He shouted at the top of his voice, “What do you want with me,(N) Jesus, Son of the Most High God?(O) In God’s name don’t torture me!” For Jesus had said to him, “Come out of this man, you impure spirit!”

Then Jesus asked him, “What is your name?”

“My name is Legion,”(P) he replied, “for we are many.” 10 And he begged Jesus again and again not to send them out of the area.

11 A large herd of pigs was feeding on the nearby hillside. 12 The demons begged Jesus, “Send us among the pigs; allow us to go into them.” 13 He gave them permission, and the impure spirits came out and went into the pigs. The herd, about two thousand in number, rushed down the steep bank into the lake and were drowned.

14 Those tending the pigs ran off and reported this in the town and countryside, and the people went out to see what had happened. 15 When they came to Jesus, they saw the man who had been possessed by the legion(Q) of demons,(R) sitting there, dressed and in his right mind; and they were afraid. 16 Those who had seen it told the people what had happened to the demon-possessed man—and told about the pigs as well. 17 Then the people began to plead with Jesus to leave their region.

18 As Jesus was getting into the boat, the man who had been demon-possessed begged to go with him. 19 Jesus did not let him, but said, “Go home to your own people and tell them(S) how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you.” 20 So the man went away and began to tell in the Decapolis[b](T) how much Jesus had done for him. And all the people were amazed.

Leviticus 7:28-9:6, Mark 3:31-4:25, Psalms 37:12-29, Proverbs 10:5

Today is the 19th day of February, welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I am Brian it’s great to be here with you. Coming to you from Ashdod, ancient Philistine stronghold city here in the land of Israel where we will be launching out today on the first day of our pilgrimage. So, super excited about all of that, super excited to share the photos and video and just talk about what we’re seeing and doing as we begin our adventure. But…well…not a lot has happened yet, but we’ll talk about it at the end but we are at the beginning and we have come around this Global Campfire to allow God’s word to wash into our lives and speak to us today. So, we’re reading from the New International Version this week. Leviticus chapter 7 verse 28 through 9 verse 6 today.

Commentary:

Okay, so, in the Gospel of Mark we had the story, a farmer went out to so, right, and he throws seed and it lands on all different kinds of ground and this is a parable that Jesus is telling and we’ve encountered this parable while we were going to the book of Matthew. Matthew, Mark, and Luke are this synoptic Gospels and so there’s a lot of shared material and pretty much all biblical scholars agree that the source material would be Mark, the gospel that we are reading as the earliest of the Gospels. So, Jesus talks about this farmer throwing seed. And, so, we can assume that there’s nothing wrong with seed, like the seed is good seed and it was scattered evenly but it was scattered evenly over different kinds of ground. So…so the seed is good, but the hope of the harvest was in the soil. So, in Jesus parable the seed is the word of God and the soil is the human heart. So, right there we see that a collaboration is required, the human and the divine collaborate in God’s kingdom. So, we’ve been at this, what…seven…are we seven weeks in yet…six weeks…I don’t have a calendar in front of me and I’m still…still trying to keep up with what day this is as we launch this pilgrimage in the land of Israel. But we’ve been at this, we’ve established a rhythm, this is a daily thing we do. So, at this point it’s a good time to take in Jesus message and apply it to ourselves because harvest is a theme throughout the Scriptures and harvest is a theme throughout our lives and we want the harvest in our lives but we can’t expect a harvest that is going to yield 100 times over if the soil of our hearts is…isn’t appropriate for that. So, in this analogy the…the word of God, like this is what we do, this is what we’re here for every day. So, this seed is getting thrown out, the word of God all over this community every day and if it only lands on the surface it’s gonna get snatched away almost immediately. And don’t we know that? Like haven’t it we witnessed that. We might not have thought of it in these terms, but don’t we already know this is true and if our hearts are stony and cold and hard there’s nowhere for the word of God to take root at all. And if we’re just obsessed by the worries of life or we’re just chasing wealth or some kind of goal or desire, well then according to Jesus, the seed has been thrown and it’s good seed but it’s fallen on a thorny ground that will choke out the word of God. So, this is as good a time as any to start thinking about what kind of soil we might be and what kind of soil we might be cultivating in our hearts. It…it might be time to do some gardening.

Prayer:

Jesus, we invite You into that as we hear Your words and consider what kind of soil we are. This was what You wanted us to think about. And, so, we are thinking about it. And it’s interesting because we can probably find patches of all these different kinds of ground as we walk the terrain of our own hearts. It’s likely that we can find places that are thriving. But it’s also likely that we can find places where the word has been snatched away or where it’s rocky ground and there’s no place for it to take hold or we’re…we’re just obsessed with something else and distracted and so it’s choked out. What we want to be is good soil because what we want to experience is the full harvest and to be a laborer for the good harvest in the lives of others. And, so, we invite Your Holy Spirit to cause us to continually come back to this today, to come back to our own hearts, to come back to its terrain. What does it look like? Show us the places that need tending. Come Holy Spirit we ask in the name of Jesus. Amen.

Announcements:

dailyaudiobible.com is the website, home base, where you find out what’s going on around here. And today will be our first day of…of touring in the land of Israel. And I won’t really be able to report back much until things happen. So, I’ll get to tell you about today tomorrow but yeah, I can tell you about yesterday. Yeah….we got in and we went mudding and went out to a Philistine archaeological site called Akron, a place that I’ve been trying to get to over three different seasons. And lots of people were like, “why would you want to go there? Like, there’s nothing to see there. Why would you want to go there?” But…well that started out simply by trying to document and a photograph and take film of the…the Philistine strongholds mentioned in the Bible except for Gaza. And, so, we got three of those which is Gath and Ashdod and Ashkelon out. But the last two are modern cities. So, accessibility is relatively easy. This has been hard to get to. So, yeah once we were thwarted it was like, okay it’s on. And then we were thwarted again in a different year and it was like, okay I don’t care if there’s nothing to see there, I…I am going to see that place. And, so, finally mission accomplished and…and then so we got to Ashdod and got all situated in a hotel and had just a fantastic dinner last night just getting familiar, just getting to see each other. It’s all gonna become a family and so just making that first acquaintance. Jetlagged everybody, you know, just people all over the map. Some have come in early, got acclimated, some are just like, just getting in and delirious with it all but high on adrenaline. But it’s always fun to be there on the Mediterranean coast and just realize “holy moly I’m in the holy land. Like that’s the Mediterranean Sea. This is going to be epic.” And, so, that’s kind of where we are and what we’re feeling and we’ll be heading southward today out into the wilderness, which is where so much of the biblical stories happen. And, so, we’ll be heading into the wilderness today making our way down to the furthest southern tip of Israel, a city called Eilot, which sits on the shores of the Red Sea. So, thank you. Thank you for your continued prayers over everything from the vehicles to the technology to health to whether to…to jetlag and just everything that goes into this. We’ll be kind of setting a rhythm for our days and we’ll fall into that rhythm, but this is kind of day one. And, so, we’re just getting used to the fact that we’re here at all. And, so, we…we…we gratefully, gratefully thank you for your prayers.

Leviticus 7:28-9:6

The Priests’ Share

28 The Lord said to Moses, 29 “Say to the Israelites: ‘Anyone who brings a fellowship offering to the Lord is to bring part of it as their sacrifice to the Lord. 30 With their own hands they are to present the food offering to the Lord; they are to bring the fat, together with the breast, and wave the breast before the Lord as a wave offering.(A) 31 The priest shall burn the fat on the altar,(B) but the breast belongs to Aaron and his sons.(C) 32 You are to give the right thigh of your fellowship offerings to the priest as a contribution.(D) 33 The son of Aaron who offers the blood and the fat of the fellowship offering shall have the right thigh as his share. 34 From the fellowship offerings of the Israelites, I have taken the breast that is waved and the thigh(E) that is presented and have given them to Aaron the priest and his sons(F) as their perpetual share from the Israelites.’”

35 This is the portion of the food offerings presented to the Lord that were allotted to Aaron and his sons on the day they were presented to serve the Lord as priests. 36 On the day they were anointed,(G) the Lord commanded that the Israelites give this to them as their perpetual share for the generations to come.

37 These, then, are the regulations for the burnt offering,(H) the grain offering,(I) the sin offering, the guilt offering, the ordination offering(J) and the fellowship offering, 38 which the Lord gave Moses(K) at Mount Sinai(L) in the Desert of Sinai on the day he commanded the Israelites to bring their offerings to the Lord.(M)

The Ordination of Aaron and His Sons(N)

The Lord said to Moses, “Bring Aaron and his sons,(O) their garments,(P) the anointing oil,(Q) the bull for the sin offering,[a](R) the two rams(S) and the basket containing bread made without yeast,(T) and gather the entire assembly(U) at the entrance to the tent of meeting.” Moses did as the Lord commanded him, and the assembly gathered at the entrance to the tent of meeting.

Moses said to the assembly, “This is what the Lord has commanded to be done.(V) Then Moses brought Aaron and his sons forward and washed them with water.(W) He put the tunic on Aaron, tied the sash around him, clothed him with the robe and put the ephod on him. He also fastened the ephod with a decorative waistband, which he tied around him.(X) He placed the breastpiece(Y) on him and put the Urim and Thummim(Z) in the breastpiece. Then he placed the turban(AA) on Aaron’s head and set the gold plate, the sacred emblem,(AB) on the front of it, as the Lord commanded Moses.(AC)

10 Then Moses took the anointing oil(AD) and anointed(AE) the tabernacle(AF) and everything in it, and so consecrated them. 11 He sprinkled some of the oil on the altar seven times, anointing the altar and all its utensils and the basin with its stand, to consecrate them.(AG) 12 He poured some of the anointing oil on Aaron’s head and anointed(AH) him to consecrate him.(AI) 13 Then he brought Aaron’s sons(AJ) forward, put tunics(AK) on them, tied sashes around them and fastened caps on them, as the Lord commanded Moses.(AL)

14 He then presented the bull(AM) for the sin offering,(AN) and Aaron and his sons laid their hands on its head.(AO) 15 Moses slaughtered the bull and took some of the blood,(AP) and with his finger he put it on all the horns of the altar(AQ) to purify the altar.(AR) He poured out the rest of the blood at the base of the altar. So he consecrated it to make atonement for it.(AS) 16 Moses also took all the fat around the internal organs, the long lobe of the liver, and both kidneys and their fat, and burned it on the altar. 17 But the bull with its hide and its flesh and its intestines(AT) he burned up outside the camp,(AU) as the Lord commanded Moses.

18 He then presented the ram(AV) for the burnt offering, and Aaron and his sons laid their hands on its head. 19 Then Moses slaughtered the ram and splashed the blood against the sides of the altar. 20 He cut the ram into pieces and burned the head, the pieces and the fat.(AW) 21 He washed the internal organs and the legs with water and burned the whole ram on the altar. It was a burnt offering, a pleasing aroma, a food offering presented to the Lord, as the Lord commanded Moses.

22 He then presented the other ram, the ram for the ordination,(AX) and Aaron and his sons laid their hands on its head.(AY) 23 Moses slaughtered the ram and took some of its blood and put it on the lobe of Aaron’s right ear, on the thumb of his right hand and on the big toe of his right foot.(AZ) 24 Moses also brought Aaron’s sons forward and put some of the blood on the lobes of their right ears, on the thumbs of their right hands and on the big toes of their right feet. Then he splashed blood against the sides of the altar.(BA) 25 After that, he took the fat(BB), the fat tail, all the fat around the internal organs, the long lobe of the liver, both kidneys and their fat and the right thigh. 26 And from the basket of bread made without yeast, which was before the Lord, he took one thick loaf, one thick loaf with olive oil mixed in, and one thin loaf,(BC) and he put these on the fat portions and on the right thigh. 27 He put all these in the hands of Aaron and his sons, and they waved them before the Lord(BD) as a wave offering. 28 Then Moses took them from their hands and burned them on the altar on top of the burnt offering as an ordination offering, a pleasing aroma, a food offering presented to the Lord. 29 Moses also took the breast, which was his share of the ordination ram,(BE) and waved it before the Lord as a wave offering, as the Lord commanded Moses.

30 Then Moses(BF) took some of the anointing oil and some of the blood from the altar and sprinkled them on Aaron and his garments(BG) and on his sons and their garments. So he consecrated(BH) Aaron and his garments and his sons and their garments.

31 Moses then said to Aaron and his sons, “Cook the meat at the entrance to the tent of meeting(BI) and eat it there with the bread from the basket of ordination offerings, as I was commanded: ‘Aaron and his sons are to eat it.’ 32 Then burn up the rest of the meat and the bread. 33 Do not leave the entrance to the tent of meeting for seven days, until the days of your ordination are completed, for your ordination will last seven days.(BJ) 34 What has been done today was commanded by the Lord(BK) to make atonement for you. 35 You must stay at the entrance to the tent of meeting day and night for seven days and do what the Lord requires,(BL) so you will not die; for that is what I have been commanded.”

36 So Aaron and his sons did everything the Lord commanded through Moses.

The Priests Begin Their Ministry

On the eighth day(BM) Moses summoned Aaron and his sons and the elders(BN) of Israel. He said to Aaron, “Take a bull calf for your sin offering[b] and a ram for your burnt offering, both without defect, and present them before the Lord. Then say to the Israelites: ‘Take a male goat(BO) for a sin offering,(BP) a calf(BQ) and a lamb(BR)—both a year old and without defect—for a burnt offering, and an ox[c](BS) and a ram for a fellowship offering(BT) to sacrifice before the Lord, together with a grain offering mixed with olive oil. For today the Lord will appear to you.(BU)’”

They took the things Moses commanded to the front of the tent of meeting, and the entire assembly came near and stood before the Lord. Then Moses said, “This is what the Lord has commanded you to do, so that the glory of the Lord(BV) may appear to you.”

Mark 3:31-4:25

31 Then Jesus’ mother and brothers arrived.(A) Standing outside, they sent someone in to call him. 32 A crowd was sitting around him, and they told him, “Your mother and brothers are outside looking for you.”

33 “Who are my mother and my brothers?” he asked.

34 Then he looked at those seated in a circle around him and said, “Here are my mother and my brothers! 35 Whoever does God’s will is my brother and sister and mother.”

The Parable of the Sower(B)(C)

Again Jesus began to teach by the lake.(D) The crowd that gathered around him was so large that he got into a boat and sat in it out on the lake, while all the people were along the shore at the water’s edge. He taught them many things by parables,(E) and in his teaching said: “Listen! A farmer went out to sow his seed.(F) As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up. Some fell on rocky places, where it did not have much soil. It sprang up quickly, because the soil was shallow. But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched, and they withered because they had no root. Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants, so that they did not bear grain. Still other seed fell on good soil. It came up, grew and produced a crop, some multiplying thirty, some sixty, some a hundred times.”(G)

Then Jesus said, “Whoever has ears to hear, let them hear.”(H)

10 When he was alone, the Twelve and the others around him asked him about the parables. 11 He told them, “The secret of the kingdom of God(I) has been given to you. But to those on the outside(J) everything is said in parables 12 so that,

“‘they may be ever seeing but never perceiving,
and ever hearing but never understanding;
otherwise they might turn and be forgiven!’[a](K)

13 Then Jesus said to them, “Don’t you understand this parable? How then will you understand any parable? 14 The farmer sows the word.(L) 15 Some people are like seed along the path, where the word is sown. As soon as they hear it, Satan(M) comes and takes away the word that was sown in them. 16 Others, like seed sown on rocky places, hear the word and at once receive it with joy. 17 But since they have no root, they last only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, they quickly fall away. 18 Still others, like seed sown among thorns, hear the word; 19 but the worries of this life, the deceitfulness of wealth(N) and the desires for other things come in and choke the word, making it unfruitful. 20 Others, like seed sown on good soil, hear the word, accept it, and produce a crop—some thirty, some sixty, some a hundred times what was sown.”

A Lamp on a Stand

21 He said to them, “Do you bring in a lamp to put it under a bowl or a bed? Instead, don’t you put it on its stand?(O) 22 For whatever is hidden is meant to be disclosed, and whatever is concealed is meant to be brought out into the open.(P) 23 If anyone has ears to hear, let them hear.”(Q)

24 “Consider carefully what you hear,” he continued. “With the measure you use, it will be measured to you—and even more.(R) 25 Whoever has will be given more; whoever does not have, even what they have will be taken from them.”(S)

Psalm 37:12-29

12 The wicked plot(A) against the righteous
and gnash their teeth(B) at them;
13 but the Lord laughs at the wicked,
for he knows their day is coming.(C)

14 The wicked draw the sword(D)
and bend the bow(E)
to bring down the poor and needy,(F)
to slay those whose ways are upright.
15 But their swords will pierce their own hearts,(G)
and their bows will be broken.(H)

16 Better the little that the righteous have
than the wealth(I) of many wicked;

Today is the 18th day of February, welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I am Brian and it’s really, really wonderful to come to you for the first time from the land of the Bible from Israel. And this evening will be the inaugural dinner, our orientation dinner where we’ll finally get to see each other from all of the travel and just see the family that’s gonna be created here in the in the land of the Bible for the next couple weeks. So, I’m excited to be here and I’m excited that…that we’re a virtual community. And, so…so…there was room in the suitcase for you and I’m glad we can all be here together, whether physically or whether in spirit to take this…this pilgrimage, to root ourselves in the places that the Bible happened and to allow that newfound context to awaken things in us so that we don’t see the Bible the same. And, so, we’ll certainly be doing that physically, but we’ll be doing that virtually as we go through the next several days together. So, it’s good to be here for the first time this year and broadcasting the Daily Audio Bible. So, we’re reading from the New International Version this week. We are in the book of Leviticus. We are learning a lot about sacrifice. We are learning, as we talked about yesterday, just how treacherous sin is and how costly it is to our lives. So, we will pick up where we left off yesterday. Leviticus chapter 6 verse 1 through 7 verse 27.

Commentary:

Okay. We’re moving our way through the second gospel, the gospel of Mark. And, so, we’re back alongside Jesus watching His ministry coming from a little bit of a different perspective. And Jesus is…is doing his ministry, He’s revealing the kingdom of God and people are being healed and restored because of this. And, so, His family, they’re watching all of this and they decide somebody needs to get Jesus under control. And, so, the Bible says, “they went to take charge of him for they said he is out of his mind.” Oh…that’s not very encouraging. And, so, Jesus continues to heal and reveal the Kingdom and…and the religious leaders come down from Jerusalem and they decide Jesus is possessed by Beelzebul. And we talked about that when we were going to the book of Matthew. So, this this is not a good day. Like, if…if you go out your door prayed up and ready and you enter the day and you’re looking for God’s kingdom and your revealing God’s kingdom and everything that you touch and your family tells you you’re out of your mind and your spiritual leaders tell you that you’re possessed by the devil, yeah, that…that's…that’s discouraging. May we just notice this. Jesus faced all of these things as a human being. But the one that the…the religious leaders spoke over Jesus, that He is possessed by Beelzebul,  that…that didn’t work. Like, that was a line way too far. And, so, Jesus tried to expose what was going on there. So, he tells a story. “How can Satan drive out Satan”, right? “If a kingdom is divided against itself it can’t stand. If a house is divided against itself the house can’t stand.” So, I mean, that’s Jesus on one level setting the record straight. “Why would you accuse me of doing God’s work while being possessed by the devil. That doesn’t make any sense.” But there was far deeper far far far more dangerous territory that they were stepping into. Jesus told them, “truly I tell you”… and when we read that stuff in the Bible it’s like “truly, verily, verily I say unto thee” but “truly I tell you”, that’s Jesus saying “I’m telling you the truth. People can be forgiven all their sins and every slander they utter but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven. They are guilty of an eternal sin.” Like, yikes. What is that? How do you blaspheme against the Holy Spirit? What is Jesus saying here? First of all, He’s talking to the religious leaders who had just accused Him of being possessed by the devil. And that’s how He got his power to perform these miraculous signs of God’s goodness. What the religious leaders in effect were doing was calling the Spirit within Jesus that was capturing the hearts of Jesus hearers, they were calling that the devil. They were blaspheming the Holy Spirit. They were denigrating what God was doing by calling it of the devil. So, we can go, “oh…sigh of relief. I would never do that. I would never call…I mean I would never call Jesus of the devil.” But it’s actually a little more convicting than that. Have you ever called anyone of the devil or anything of the devil because you didn’t understand it or because everybody else was saying that, everybody else was saying this is false and so you’re on that bandwagon without actually knowing what you’re talking about? What if it’s not of the devil? What if God is at work and you are unaware and then you call it of the devil? That’s what they were doing to Jesus. I’m not saying that things that are evil should not be called out as evil. But you don’t have to look too far in our religious climate to find believers calling other believers of the devil because their theological persuasions might be nuanced, or their doctrinal differences are just too far of a bridge to cross they think. And, so, they label it of the devil. And that is what happened to Jesus. And that is why He commented this way. And it gives us certain things to think about this day. And isn’t that wonderful, isn’t it a gift that God’s word most every day gives us something to meditate upon throughout the day.

Prayer:

Father we invite you into this. In what ways have we denounced what you are doing in the world through someone or situations in the world that we don’t understand and so we’ve miss labeled things? We haven’t been gracious, merciful, compassionate, kind, or any of the other fruits of the Spirit. Instead we’ve been about the business of labeling things or mislabeling things, things that you might be doing and we are simply unaware. Forgive us of this because we would have to then accept the fact that we have gotten in your way when we thought we were defending you. And then we have to confess how foolish that sounds coming out of our minds, our hearts, our mouths. You don’t need us to defend you. You are the most-high God. You’ve invited us to reveal you to the world. That’s a pretty hard thing to do when were simply focused on what each other is doing, and labeling it. So, help us God, forgive us. Give us eyes to see and ears to hear your kingdom. Let us move through this day looking for it, looking for the good, looking for the righteousness that is in this world that is pushing and fighting back the darkness. And forgive us when we have stood in the way. Come Holy Spirit into all of this we ask in the name of Jesus. Amen.

It's…it’s pilgrimage time around here. So, that’s what we’ll be talking about here for the rest of the month as we journey North, South, East and West throughout the land of the Bible rooting ourselves in the stories where they happened. So, it is…it’s good…it’s good to be back in the land. Feeling like…like turning the corner, getting stronger from the jetlag, and get ready for this. Tonight is our inaugural dinner together, our orientation, first time we get to see each other all together in one place at one time. So, that’s super exciting. Today I’m planning…so we talked about this yesterday…third attempt to get to this ancient Philistine ruin called Akron, which is mentioned in the Bible several times. And, so, hoping to get some photography and some…some video of that site today then on the way down to Ashdod where we get settled in and get ready for this evening. So, thank you for your prayers and those of you who are in route who are on the journey then welcome Israel if you’ve landed.
