Judges 2:10-3:31, Luke 22:14-34, Psalms 92:1-93:5, Proverbs 14:1-2

Today is the 24th day of April welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I’m Brian it’s great to be here with you as we move forward taking another step in the week. I guess we’re at the end of the week now but taking another step forward in the Scriptures. And we’re well on our way but we’ve got a ways to go. That’s the beauty of the rhythm of life together around the Global Campfire, allowing God’s word to speak into our hearts each day. So, we started the book of Judges yesterday we talked about it and it’s kind of this…well…it’s what happens after Joshua’s leadership and after the children of Israel have moved into the Promised Land. So, let’s continue that journey. Judges chapter 2 verse 10 through 3:31 today. And we’re reading for the Amplified Bible this week.

Commentary:

Okay. So, in the book of Judges we met three of Israel’s Judges – Othniel, Ehud and Shamgar and they weren’t all at the same time. So, we…we…we kind of pass through like maybe a century and a half of time in our reading today and we’re already noticing this kind of back and forth. Like the people fall away from God, serve other gods, do their own thing, then oppression falls upon them, the enemy comes down upon them and oppresses them and they crowd to God and God raises somebody up. But what once that person dies then everything kind of goes back, it slides away, they fall away until something else happens and then somebody rises up. But since we’re covering so much time in such a short amount of reading it’s easy enough for us to think like, you know, Ehud was around for a few years, Othniel was around for a few years, Shamgar was around for…they…they like…they were elected officials or something and a lot of time is passing. And, so, if we look under the surface as we’re going to the book of Judges we can see just how and what directions the people are falling away. And as we watch how they are falling away we can also look into our own lives for the same kind of patterns because although we’re passing through centuries and centuries in the book of Judges the circle is kind of the same. Like they keep repeating the same circle and so do we a lot of the time.

Then in our reading from the book of Luke today we have come again to what we know as the Last Supper. And we know it as the Last Supper, because that’s what it was, a last meal, like a last moment with friends where nothings gonna be same again after this. And it’s in this meal Jesus institutes the sacrament of communion or the Eucharist and as Jesus is explaining this and passing the cup, He mentions that there’s a betrayer that’s at the table. And like, we know the story, so we don’t have to unpack all of this but there’s a betrayer at the table. And, so, everybody then at the table, all the disciples start asking who…who…who it could be. And kinda as the as the gospel of Luke reads, once they kinda get done with trying to figure out who it could be then this kind of transitions to a different discussion about who is the greatest of them, right? So, if they’re kinda trying to figure out who’s the lowest of them, then it would…“Stop! Me, I’m the greatest” you know…you can see how the conversation could turn. But then they get on this conversation about who’s the greatest of them. I mean can you imagine being Jesus in this situation if you’re sitting there and you’re explaining that your blood is going to be shed and you’re instituting this remembrance, this thing that should be ongoing among your friends so that you will be remembered for what you’ve done for them. And it’s not that you’re just kind of giving information but you know like tonight, later on tonight you’re going to be arrested and beat up and you’re sitting there at this meal watching those that have followed you the whole way fighting over who is the greatest. I imagine that would be discouraging to say the least and would only add to the isolation Jesus must’ve felt in those moments. Let’s pause here for a second. Like none of us have been around that table…we weren’t at that particular meal, but our culture is continually watching people, even in the faith jockey for position about who can be the biggest, brightest star, who can be the greatest. I mean our culture encourages this. Jesus responded to this. He responded to His friends, but He’s responding to us. Jesus said, “it’s not going to be that way with you. On the contrary, the one who is the greatest among you must become like the youngest and least privileged and the one who is the leader, like the servant. For who is the greater the one who reclines at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who reclines at the table? But I am among you as the one who serves.” That’s actually a pretty big reality check for us because, yeah, we can embrace the culture, we can embrace the world and work inside the world system which is for us to get as much as we can, and to become as famous or as big or as important or whatever as we can. something to give us an identity of our own or we can understand that Jesus is telling us something very important about His kingdom. And that’s basically if you want to be the greatest in His kingdom, then you must be the greatest servant, like it's…it’s backward and upside down to the way we see things and Jesus is saying greatest in my kingdom is the servant, the one who is like Christ.

Prayer:

Jesus, we invite You into that. We are pulled away from that awareness and that understanding every single day. Our culture does it, but we can’t just blame our culture. We are looking for some kind of identity and we’re trying to craft it and build it based on the criteria of the world and it is so counterintuitive to think if…if I serve well, if I lower myself, if I humble myself then I am actually being lifted up in God’s kingdom. So, Holy Spirit come into this. Help us to become more and more aware of this because what You are offering is a way out of the world, a way out of that other system that is nothing more than a treadmill. No matter how high we rise can’t stay there in that system. Whereas in Your kingdom You’re saying You don’t even have to play that game, it’s not even a real thing, it’s a completely false reality, it doesn’t lead anywhere. Humble Yourself, be a servant, love one another, serve one another. This is the way of Your kingdom. And we can think to ourselves, “well if I try do really do that for very long, I’m just gonna get walked all over.” But the way of Your kingdom is that everyone is on that same page. No one is taking advantage of anyone, there is no lack. So, Father this is how we be in the world but not of it. We have eyes to see these things and ears to hear these things. And, so come and help us become more and more aware of what our hearts posture, what our motivations are leading us into. Are we trying to scratch and eke out an identity in some way, are we trying to just get more and more and more so we can be served, or do we have the freedom to know that we are Your child, everything belongs to You and we are here to be light in the darkness, inviting everyone into the ways of Your kingdom. Come Holy Spirit into this we pray. In Jesus name we ask. Amen.

Judges 4-5

Deborah and Barak Rescue from Canaanites

But the Israelites again did evil in the sight of the Lord, after Ehud died. So the Lord sold them into the hand of Jabin king of Canaan, who reigned in Hazor. The commander of his army was Sisera, who lived in [a]Harosheth-hagoyim. Then the Israelites cried out to the Lord [for help], for Jabin had nine hundred iron chariots and had oppressed and tormented the sons of Israel severely for twenty years.

Now Deborah, a prophetess, the wife of Lappidoth, was judging Israel at that time. She used to sit [to hear and decide disputes] under the palm tree of Deborah between Ramah and Bethel in the hill country of Ephraim; and the Israelites came up to her for judgment. Now she sent word and summoned Barak the son of Abinoam from Kedesh-naphtali, and said to him, “Behold, the Lord, the God of Israel, has commanded, ‘Go and march to Mount Tabor, and take with you ten thousand men [of war] from the tribes of Naphtali and Zebulun. I will draw out Sisera, the commander of Jabin’s army, with his chariots and his infantry to meet you at the river Kishon, and I will hand him over to you.’” Then Barak said to her, “If you will go with me, then I will go; but if you will not go with me, I will not go.” She said, “I will certainly go with you; nevertheless, [b]the journey that you are about to take will not be for your honor and glory, because the Lord will sell Sisera into the hand of a woman.” Then Deborah got up and went with Barak to Kedesh. 10 And Barak summoned [the fighting men of the tribes of] Zebulun and Naphtali to Kedesh, and ten thousand men went up [c]under his command; Deborah also went up with him.

11 Now Heber the Kenite had separated himself from the Kenites, from the sons of Hobab the [d]father-in-law of Moses, and had pitched his tent as far away as the [e]terebinth tree in Zaanannim, which is near Kedesh.

12 When someone told Sisera that Barak the son of Abinoam had gone up to Mount Tabor, 13 Sisera called together all his chariots, nine hundred iron chariots, and all the people who were with him, from Harosheth-hagoyim to the river Kishon. 14 Deborah said to Barak, “Arise! For this is the day when the Lord has given Sisera into your hand. Has the Lord not gone out before you?” So Barak went down from Mount Tabor with ten thousand men following him. 15 And the Lord routed Sisera and all his chariots and [confused] all his army with the edge of the sword before Barak; and Sisera dismounted from his chariot and fled away on foot. 16 But Barak pursued the chariots and the army to Harosheth-hagoyim, and the entire army of Sisera fell by the sword; not even one man was left.

17 But Sisera fled on foot to the tent of Jael, the wife of Heber the Kenite, because there was peace between Jabin the king of Hazor and the house of Heber the Kenite. 18 Jael went out to meet Sisera, and said to him, “Turn aside, my lord, turn aside to me! Have no fear.” So he turned aside to her [and went] into the tent, and she covered him with a rug. 19 And he said to her, “Please give me a little water to drink because I am thirsty.” And she opened a skin of milk and gave him a drink; then she covered him. 20 And he said to her, “Stand at the door of the tent, and if any man comes and asks you, ‘Is there anyone here?’ tell him, ‘No.’” 21 But Jael, Heber’s wife, took a tent peg and a hammer in her hand, and came up quietly to him and drove the peg through his temple, and it went through into the ground; for he was sound asleep and exhausted. So he died. 22 And behold, as Barak pursued Sisera, Jael came out to meet him and said to him, “Come, and I will show you the man whom you are seeking.” And he entered [her tent] with her, and behold Sisera lay dead with the tent peg in his temple.

23 So on that day God subdued and humbled Jabin king of Canaan before the sons of Israel. 24 And the hand of the sons of Israel pressed down heavier and heavier on Jabin king of Canaan, until they had destroyed him.

The Song of Deborah and Barak

Then Deborah and Barak the son of Abinoam sang on that day, saying,

“For the leaders who took the lead in Israel,
For the people who volunteered [for battle],
Bless the Lord!

“Hear, O kings; listen, O rulers!
I will sing to the Lord,
I will sing praise to the Lord, the God of Israel.

Lord, when You went out from Seir,
When You marched from the field of Edom,
The earth quaked, the heavens also dripped,
Yes, the clouds dripped water.

“The mountains quaked at the presence of the Lord,
Yes, this Sinai, at the presence of the Lord, the God of Israel.

“In the days of Shamgar the son of Anath,
In the days of Jael, the highways were deserted,
And travelers went by roundabout ways.

“The villagers ceased to be; they ceased in Israel
Until I, Deborah, arose,
Until I arose, a mother in Israel.

“They chose new gods;
Then war was in the gates.
Was there a shield or spear seen
Among forty thousand in Israel?

“My heart goes out to the commanders of Israel,
The volunteers among the people;
Bless the Lord!
10
“Sing of it, you who ride on white donkeys,
You who sit on rich carpets,
And you who walk by the way.
11
“At the sound of those who divide flocks among the watering places,
There they shall recount the righteous acts of the Lord,
The righteous acts toward His villagers in Israel.
Then the people of the Lord went down to the gates.

12
“Awake, awake, Deborah;
Awake, awake, sing a song!
Arise, Barak, and lead away your captives, you son of Abinoam.
13
“Then down marched the survivors to the nobles;
The people of the Lord marched down for Me against the mighty.
14
“From Ephraim those whose root is in Amalek came down,
After you, Benjamin, with your relatives;
From Machir came down commanders and rulers,
And from Zebulun those who [f]handle the scepter of the [office of] scribe.
15
“And the heads of Issachar came with Deborah;
As Issachar, so was Barak;
Into the valley they rushed at his heels;
Among the divisions of Reuben
There were great searchings of heart.
16
“Why [Reuben] did you linger among the [g]sheepfolds,
To hear the piping for the flocks?
Among the divisions of Reuben
There were great searchings of heart.
17
“Gilead remained beyond the Jordan;
And why did Dan live as an alien on ships?
Asher sat [still] on the seacoast,
And remained by its landings.
[These did not come to battle for God’s people.]
18
“But Zebulun was a people who risked their lives to the [point of] death;
Naphtali also, on the heights of the field.

19
“The kings came and fought;
Then the kings of Canaan fought
At Taanach by the waters of Megiddo.
Spoils of silver they did not obtain.
20
“From the heavens the stars fought,
From their courses they fought against Sisera.
21
“The torrent Kishon swept the enemy away,
The ancient torrent, the torrent Kishon.
O my soul, march on with strength.
22
“Then the horses’ hoofs beat [loudly]
Because of the galloping—the galloping of his valiant and powerful steeds.
23
‘Curse [h]Meroz,’ said the messenger of the Lord,
‘Utterly curse its inhabitants;
Because they did not come to the help of the Lord,
To the help of the Lord against the mighty.’

24
“Most blessed of women is Jael,
The wife of Heber the Kenite;
Most blessed is she of women in the tent.
25
“Sisera asked for water and she gave him milk;
She brought him curds in a magnificent bowl.
26
“She reached out her [left] hand for the tent peg,
And her right hand for the workmen’s hammer.
Then she struck Sisera, she smashed his head;
And she shattered and pierced his temple.
27
“He bowed, he fell, he lay [still] at her feet;
At her feet he bowed, he fell;
Where he bowed, there he fell dead.

28
“Out of the window she looked down and lamented (cried out in a shrill voice),
The mother of Sisera through the lattice,
‘Why is his chariot delayed in coming?
Why have the hoofbeats of his chariots delayed?’
29
“Her wise ladies answered her,
Indeed, she repeated her words to herself,
30
‘Are they not finding and dividing the spoil?
A maiden (concubine) or two for every man;
A spoil of dyed garments for Sisera,
A spoil of dyed garments embroidered,
Two pieces of dyed garments embroidered for the neck of the plunderer?’
31
“So let all Your enemies perish, O Lord;
But let those who love Him be like the rising of the sun in its might.”

And the land was at rest for forty years.

Luke 22:35-53

35 And He said to them, “When I sent you out without a money belt and [provision] bag and [extra] sandals, did you lack anything?” They answered, “Nothing.” 36 Then He said to them, “But now, he who has a money belt is to take it along, and also his [provision] bag, and he who has no sword is to sell his coat and buy one. 37 For I tell you that this [Scripture] which is written must be completed and fulfilled in Me: ‘And He was counted with the criminals’; for that which refers to Me has its fulfillment [and is settled].”(A) 38 They said, “Lord, look, here are two swords.” And He said to them, “It is enough.”

The Garden of Gethsemane

39 And He came out and went, as was His habit, to the Mount of Olives; and the disciples followed Him. 40 When He arrived at the place [called Gethsemane], He said to them, “Pray continually that you may not fall into temptation.”(B) 41 And He withdrew from them about a stone’s throw, and knelt down and prayed, 42 saying, “Father, if You are willing, remove this cup [of divine wrath] from Me; yet not My will, but [always] Yours be done.” 43 [a]Now an angel appeared to Him from heaven, strengthening Him. 44 And being in agony [deeply distressed and anguished; almost to the point of death], He prayed more intently; and His [b]sweat became like drops of blood, falling down on the ground.(C) 45 When He rose from prayer, He came to the disciples and found them sleeping from sorrow, 46 and He said to them, “Why are you sleeping? Get up and pray that you may not fall into temptation.”

Judas Betrays Jesus

47 While He was still speaking, a crowd came, and the man called Judas, one of the twelve [disciples], was leading the way for them. He approached Jesus to [c]kiss Him.(D) 48 And Jesus said to him, “Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?” 49 When those who were around Him saw what was about to happen, they said, “Lord, should we strike with the sword?” 50 And [d]one of them struck the slave of the high priest and cut off his right ear.(E) 51 But Jesus replied, “Stop! No more of this.” And He touched the ear and healed him. 52 Then Jesus said to the chief priests and officers of the temple and elders [of the Sanhedrin] who had come out against Him, “Have you come out with swords and clubs as you would against a robber? 53 Day after day when I was with you in the temple, you did not lay hands on Me; but this hour and the power and authority of darkness are yours.”

Psalm 94

The Lord Implored to Avenge His People.

94 O Lord God, You to whom vengeance belongs,
O God, You to whom vengeance belongs, shine forth [in judgment]!

Rise up, O Judge of the earth;
Give to the proud a fitting compensation.

O Lord, how long will the wicked,
How long will the wicked rejoice in triumph?

They pour out words, speaking arrogant things;
All who do evil boast proudly.(A)

They crush Your people, O Lord,
And afflict and abuse Your heritage.

[a]They kill the widow and the alien
And murder the fatherless.

Yet they say, “The Lord does not see,
Nor does the God of Jacob (Israel) notice it.”

Consider thoughtfully, you senseless (stupid ones) among the people;
And you [dull-minded] fools, when will you become wise and understand?

He who made the ear, does He not hear?
He who formed the eye, does He not see?
10
He who instructs the nations,
Does He not rebuke and punish,
He who teaches man knowledge?
11
The Lord knows the thoughts of man,
That they are a mere breath (vain, empty, futile).(B)

12
Blessed [with wisdom and prosperity] is the man whom You discipline and instruct, O Lord,
And whom You teach from Your law,
13
That You may grant him [power to calm himself and find] peace in the days of adversity,
Until the pit is dug for the wicked and ungodly.
14
For the Lord will not abandon His people,
Nor will He abandon His inheritance.
15
For judgment will again be righteous,
And all the upright in heart will follow it.
16
Who will stand up for me against the evildoers?
Who will take a stand for me against those who do wickedness?

17
If the Lord had not been my help,
I would soon have dwelt in [the land of] silence.
18
If I say, “My foot has slipped,”
Your compassion and lovingkindness, O Lord, will hold me up.
19
When my anxious thoughts multiply within me,
Your comforts delight me.
20
Can a throne of destruction be allied with You,
One which frames and devises mischief by decree [under the sacred name of law]?
21
They band themselves together against the life of the righteous
And condemn the innocent to death.
22
But the Lord has become my high tower and defense,
And my God the rock of my refuge.
23
He has turned back their own wickedness upon them
And will destroy them by means of their own evil;
The Lord our God will wipe them out.

Footnotes:

  1. Psalm 94:6 Widows, resident aliens, and the fatherless were particularly vulnerable members of ancient society, since they often had little or no economic means. The wicked could easily take advantage of them. God in several Old Testament passages commanded Israel to care especially for these helpless members of society. See, for example, Deut 24:17-22; Ps 146:9; Is 1:17; Zech 7:9, 10.

Proverbs 14:3-4

In the mouth of the [arrogant] [a]fool [who rejects God] is a rod for his back,
But the lips of the wise [when they speak with godly wisdom] will protect them.

Where there are no oxen, the manger is clean,
But much revenue [because of good crops] comes by the strength of the ox.

Judges 2:10-3:31

10 Also, all [the people of] that generation were gathered to their fathers [in death]; and another generation arose after them who did not know (recognize, understand) the Lord, nor even the work which He had done for Israel.

Israel Serves Baals

11 Then the Israelites did evil in the sight of the Lord and worshiped and served the Baals, 12 and they abandoned the Lord, the God of their fathers, who brought them out of the land of Egypt. They followed other gods from the gods of the peoples who were around them, and they bowed down to them, and offended and provoked the Lord to anger. 13 So they abandoned the Lord and served Baal [the pagan god of the Canaanites] and the [a]Ashtaroth. 14 So the anger of the Lord burned against Israel, and He gave them into the hands (power) of plunderers who robbed them; and He sold them into the hands of their surrounding enemies, so that they could no longer stand [in opposition] before their enemies. 15 Wherever they went, the hand of the Lord was against them for evil (misfortune), as the Lord had spoken, and as the Lord had sworn to them, so that they were severely distressed.(A)

16 Then the Lord raised up [b]judges who rescued them from the hands of those who robbed them. 17 Yet they did not listen to their judges, for they played the prostitute after other gods and they bowed down to them. They quickly turned aside from the way in which their fathers had walked in obeying the commandments of the Lord; they did not do as their fathers. 18 When the Lord raised up judges for them, He was with the judge and He rescued them from the hand of their enemies all the days of the judge; for the Lord was moved to pity by their groaning because of those who oppressed and afflicted them. 19 But when the judge died, they turned back and behaved more corruptly than their fathers, in following and serving other gods, and bowing down to them. They did not [c]abandon their practices or their stubborn ways. 20 So the anger of the Lord burned against Israel, and He said, “Because this [d]nation has transgressed (violated) My covenant (binding agreement) which I commanded their fathers, and has not listened to My voice, 21 I also will no longer drive out before them any of the nations which Joshua left [to be conquered] when he died, 22 in order to test [the loyalty of] Israel by them, whether Israel will keep the way of the Lord to walk in it, as their fathers did, or not.” 23 So the Lord allowed those nations to remain, not driving them out at once; and He did not give them into the hand of Joshua.

Idolatry Leads to Servitude

Now these are the nations which the Lord left [in order] to test Israel by them (that is, all [the people of Israel] who had not [previously] experienced any of the wars in Canaan; only in order that the generations of the sons of Israel might be taught war, at least those who had not experienced it previously). The remaining nations are: the five lords (governors) of the Philistines, all the Canaanites, the Sidonians, and the Hivites who lived on Mount Lebanon from Mount Baal-hermon to the entrance of Hamath. They were [allowed to remain] for the testing of Israel, to determine whether Israel would listen to and obey the commandments of the Lord, which He had commanded their fathers (ancestors) through Moses. And the Israelites lived among the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites; and they took their daughters for themselves as wives and gave their own daughters to their sons, and served their [pagan] gods.(B)

And the Israelites did evil in the sight of the Lord, and they forgot the Lord their God and served the Baals and the [e]Asheroth.(C) So the anger of the Lord was kindled against Israel, and He sold them into the hand of Cushan-rishathaim king of [f]Mesopotamia; and the Israelites served Cushan-rishathaim eight years.

The First Judge Rescues Israel

But when the Israelites cried out to the Lord [for help], the Lord raised up a [g]man to rescue the people of Israel, [h]Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother. 10 The Spirit of the Lord came upon him, and he judged Israel. He went out to war, and the Lord gave Cushan-rishathaim king of Mesopotamia into his hand, and he prevailed over Cushan-rishathaim. 11 And the land was at rest [from oppression for] forty years. Then Othniel the son of Kenaz died.

12 Now the Israelites again did evil in the sight of the Lord, and the Lord strengthened Eglon king of Moab against Israel, since they had done what was evil in the sight of the Lord. 13 And Eglon gathered to him the sons of Ammon and Amalek, and went and struck down Israel [in defeat], and they took possession of the City of Palm Trees (Jericho). 14 And the Israelites served Eglon king of Moab eighteen years.

Ehud Rescues Israel from Moab

15 But when the Israelites cried out to the Lord [for help], the Lord raised up a [i]man to rescue them, Ehud the son of Gera, a Benjamite, [j]a left-handed man. And the Israelites sent a gift of tribute by him to Eglon king of Moab. 16 Now Ehud made for himself a sword a [k]cubit long, which had two edges, and he bound it on his [l]right thigh under his robe. 17 And he brought the tribute to Eglon king of Moab. Now Eglon was a very fat man. 18 And when Ehud had finished presenting the [m]tribute, he sent away the people who had carried it. 19 But Ehud himself turned back from the [n]sculptured stones at Gilgal, [and he returned to Eglon] and said [to him], “I have a secret message for you, O king.” Eglon said “Keep silence.” And all who attended him left him. 20 Ehud came to him as he was sitting alone in his [private] cool upper chamber, and Ehud said, “I have a message from God for you.” And the king got up from his seat. 21 Then Ehud reached out with his left hand and took the sword from his right thigh, and plunged it into Eglon’s belly. 22 And the hilt also went in after the blade, and the fat closed over the blade, because Ehud did not draw the sword out of his belly; and the refuse came out. 23 Then Ehud went out into the vestibule and shut the doors of the upper chamber behind him, and locked them.

24 When Ehud departed, Eglon’s servants came. And when they saw that the doors of the upper room were locked, they said, “He is only [o]relieving himself in the cool room.” 25 They waited [a very long time] until they became embarrassed and uneasy, but he still did not open the doors of the upper room. So [finally] they took the key and opened them, and behold, their master had fallen to the floor, dead.

26 Now Ehud escaped while they lingered, and he passed beyond the sculptured stones and escaped to Seirah. 27 When he had arrived, he blew a trumpet in the hill country of Ephraim; and the sons of Israel went down with him from the hill country, and he was in front of them. 28 And he said to them, “Pursue them, for the Lord has handed over your enemies the Moabites to you.” So they went down after him and seized the [p]fords of the Jordan opposite Moab and did not allow anyone to cross. 29 They struck down at that time about ten thousand Moabite men, all strong, courageous men; not a man escaped. 30 So Moab was subdued and humbled that day under the hand of Israel, and the land was at rest for eighty years.

Shamgar Rescues from Philistines

31 After Ehud came Shamgar the son of Anath, who struck down six hundred Philistine men with an [q]oxgoad. He too saved Israel.

Luke 22:14-34

The Lord’s Supper

14 When the hour [for the meal] had come, Jesus reclined at the table, and the apostles with Him. 15 He said to them, “I have earnestly wanted to eat this Passover with you before I suffer; 16 for I say to you, I will not eat it again until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.” 17 And when He had taken a cup and [a]given thanks, He said, “Take this and share it among yourselves;(A) 18 for I say to you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine from now on until the kingdom of God comes.” 19 And when He had taken bread and given thanks, He broke it and gave it to them, saying, “This is My body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of Me.” 20 And in the same way He took the cup after they had eaten, saying, “This cup, which is poured out for you, is the new covenant [ratified] in My blood. 21 But listen, the hand of the one betraying Me is with Mine on the table.(B) 22 For indeed, the Son of Man is going as it has been determined; but woe (judgment is coming) to that man by whom He is betrayed and handed over!” 23 And they began to discuss among themselves which one of them it might be who was going to do this.

Who Is Greatest?

24 Now a dispute also arose among them as to which of them was regarded to be the greatest. 25 Jesus said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles have absolute power and lord it over them; and those in authority over them are called ‘Benefactors.’(C) 26 But it is not to be this way with you; on the contrary, the one who is the greatest among you must become like the youngest [and least privileged], and the [one who is the] leader, like the servant. 27 For who is the greater, the one who reclines at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who reclines at the table? But I am among you as the one who serves.

28 “You are those who have remained and have stood by Me in My trials; 29 and just as My Father has granted Me a kingdom, I grant you [the privilege] 30 that you may eat and drink at My table in My kingdom, and you will sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.

31 “Simon, Simon (Peter), listen! Satan has demanded permission to sift [all of] you like grain;(D) 32 but I have prayed [especially] for you [Peter], that your faith [and confidence in Me] may not fail; and you, once you have turned back again [to Me], strengthen and support your brothers [in the faith].” 33 And Peter said to Him, “Lord, I am ready to go with You both to prison and to death!”(E) 34 Jesus said, “I say to you, Peter, before the rooster crows today, you will [utterly] deny three times that you know Me.”

Psalm 92-93

Praise for the Lord’s Goodness.

A Psalm. A Song for the Sabbath day.

92 It is a good and delightful thing to give thanks to the Lord,
To sing praises to Your name, O Most High,

To declare Your lovingkindness in the morning
And Your faithfulness by night,

With an instrument of ten strings and with the harp,
With a solemn sound on the lyre.

For You, O Lord, have made me glad by Your works;
At the works of Your hands I joyfully sing.

How great are Your works, O Lord!
Your thoughts are very deep [beyond man’s understanding].

A senseless man [in his crude and uncultivated state] knows nothing,
Nor does a [self-righteous] fool understand this:

That though the wicked sprout up like grass
And all evildoers flourish,
They will be destroyed forever.

But You, Lord, are on high forever.

For behold, Your enemies, O Lord,
For behold, Your enemies will perish;
All who do evil will be scattered.

10
But my horn [my emblem of strength and power] You have exalted like that of a wild ox;
I am anointed with fresh oil [for Your service].
11
My eye has looked on my foes;
My ears hear of the evildoers who rise up against me.
12
The righteous will flourish like the date palm [long-lived, upright and useful];
They will grow like a cedar in Lebanon [majestic and stable].
13
Planted in the house of the Lord,
They will flourish in the courts of our God.
14
[Growing in grace] they will still thrive and bear fruit and prosper in old age;
They will flourish and be [a]vital and fresh [rich in trust and love and contentment];
15
[They are living memorials] to declare that the Lord is upright and faithful [to His promises];
He is my rock, and there is no unrighteousness in Him.(A)

The Majesty of the Lord.

93 The Lord reigns, He is clothed with majesty and splendor;
The Lord has clothed and encircled Himself with strength;
the world is firmly established, it cannot be moved.

Your throne is established from of old;
You are from everlasting.

The floods have lifted up, O Lord,
The floods have lifted up their voice;
The floods lift up their pounding waves.

More than the sounds of many waters,
More than the mighty breakers of the sea,
The Lord on high is mighty.

Your precepts are fully confirmed and completely reliable;
Holiness adorns Your house,
O Lord, forever.

Proverbs 14:1-2

Contrast the Upright and the Wicked

14 The wise woman builds her house [on a foundation of godly precepts, and her household thrives],
But the foolish one [who lacks spiritual insight] tears it down with her own hands [by ignoring godly principles].

He who walks in uprightness [reverently] fears the Lord [and obeys and worships Him with profound respect],
But he who is devious in his ways despises Him.

Judges 1:1-2:9, Luke 21:29-22:13, Psalms 90:1-91:16, Proverbs 13:24-25

Today is the 23rd day of April welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I’m Brian it’s great to be here with you today as we do what we do and take the next step forward no matter what as day by day this journey pulls us forward and forward and forward through the Scriptures and through a year. And today is an interesting day because we’re kind of turning the corner in the Scriptures. We are moving into a new book, the book of Judges, but we’re also moving into a new era.

Introduction to the book of Judges:

Let’s talk about that for a minute because we really are turning the page. We’ve had kind of a singular leader for a while like Abraham and Isaac and Jacob and…and although they were family and tribal leaders, we knbw their stories. And then Moses comes onto the picture and we’re traveling with him and then Joshua. Things are gonna change now. Like, basically, that whole era is coming to an end and the time of the judges is emerging, and on the other side of the time of the judges will be the time of the monarchy, like they’ll want a singular leader again, they’ll want a king. So, we go into this book called judges and we can, by its name think, “well this is gonna be a book of judgment.” It’s actually more kind of a quick overview of the centuries that occurred after Joshua. So, Joshua has died, the land has been settled. Obviously, there's…he's…there’s still some land that isn’t settled and conquered but the tribes have been all given their inheritance and things are settling down, but there wasn’t a dominant leader that was installed. You know, like, Joshua comes after Moses. Moses puts Joshua in place and Joshua had been like the right-hand man of Moses for a long time. So, he took the reins of leadership but there was no dominant leader after Joshua. So, the tribes were just basically ruling themselves doing what they think is right in their own eyes, but a decline begins and they begin to do everything they were warned not to do - all of the mixture, the way that they were seduced…will be seduced away to false gods and who God uses, who God uses to bring the people back to rescue the people. Even those people, like we’ll go into their stories and go, like “wow! Very, very different character than Moses and Joshua.” But we’ll be able to see that the people are just doing what they…whatever they want. So, basically Moses and Joshua made things very, very clear - very clear who God is, very clear who their identity is, very clear where they’re going, very clear who they belong to. And there’s all kinds of rituals and statutes and laws that kind of govern this awareness. And Judges will give us a picture of…well…of how that can disintegrate, and we’ll find a lot in the book of Judges for our own lives. So, let’s dive into this new era. The page had turned. We’re reading from the Amplified Bible this week. Judges chapter 1 verse 1 through 2 verse 9 today.

Prayer:

Father, we thank You for Your word and as we…as we do kind of move into this new book, the book of Judges, review the last…the last things in Joshua’s life and prepare to move forward and meet some new people, some interesting and some strange people, we invite Your Holy Spirit, We feel the changing of the seasons in the world and the seasons are changing in the Bible as well. And, so, we invite Your Holy Spirit into all of it in the days ahead. Come Jesus we pray in Your mighty name, we ask. Amen.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Hello Daily Audio Bible family this is Abba’s Grace I just had to call in because I just heard Val. I’ve been looking at the days and I’m like she said the 15th of every month, she’s got a call in to let us know that she is okay. And I’m just so glad to hear your voice. I was just overwhelmed with your call, not even because of what you are struggling with physically but mostly and mainly because of the lies that were consuming you at the time that you called just covered in shame, just…just like Adam and Eve were at the very beginning of time. The same exact lies that deceived us then is still carrying on today. And I just felt so sad and by how we were feeling from within, your inner man. So, thank you, thank you so much for calling just to hear your voice and just hear that praise and your encouragement to others stating that if He could do it for you, He could do it for all of us. He has done it for all of us. It’s done and it’s finished. All of us are loved. All of us have been rescued whether our physical body is being attacked or not, we can rejoice in the fact that our soul has been set free and that our Spirit is currently completely whole, completely healed, completely delivered. May we all awaken to that this year. That’s what this year is about. It’s about that awakening of the truth of what was finished on the cross.

Hello this is Jackie Saved by His Grace in Oregon. I wanted to thank Silver Lining Cindy in Seattle for her advice. Honestly, it’s made me look around and thank God for so many things that I just took for granted in the past. I think all of us are doing that and it’s drawing us closer to God and I know that God did not bring this virus, but He does have a purpose in that this virus is gonna draw…make many people closer to God. I just recently read a couple about to get a divorce that they’d been in the house together and got to know each other all over again and they canceled the court date. So, I want to thank God for all these things and especially Brian and his family and the Daily Audio Bible. Bye.

Dear God, I just want to pray for the anonymous lady that phoned in on April 20th 36 minutes into the program just crying out to You for help and for comfort for the emotional pain that she’s going through. Oh God, I can feel her pain and sister I want you to know that I feel your pain and I feel for you and more than that Jesus feels it. Jesus has felt your pain and carried you. Oh, dear God, I pray that this sister would feel Your arms around her, I pray that she would feel Your comfort. And thank You God for being there near her. Please hold her together and take her through this and please bring her back to a place of stability and safety and peace. God, please let her know that she’s loved. In Jesus’ name. Amen. Sister, please know that you are loved and not just by Jesus but through all of us who…who love Him and who love you. God bless you sis. Love you.

Good morning holy and beloved children of God who listen to the DAB. This is Allison from England. Although I’m a longtime listener I very rarely call in, but I just wanted to say how grateful I am that the DAB has been in my life this year as a constant, as a challenge, as an encouragement and I thank you for the relationship that I have with God through being in His word through this resource. I pray for you all, I listen to all your prayers and I join my heart with yours in vibrant prayer. Lord, so many people are frightened and afraid, so I want to wish hope for this community and for all those lives that are touched by the people of the DAB. May we know the joy and the peace and the hope that can only come from God as we follow You in our lives. Oh, Father son and Holy Spirit we praise Your holy name and we offer You our whole lives to be used in Your service. Support us, be with us, that we may be people of Your kingdom. Amen.

Hi my name is Soraya I and I live in Fairborn Georgia and I’m 10 years old, 10 and half and you guys do really, really good on the Daily Audio Bible and I hope that you guys keep on doing this because it’s really helping kids in the world and I’m very, very proud of you China and Mr. Brian. And like I said before my name is Soraya and bye.

This is Sharon from Kansas City. I just finished listening to April 20th and a lady called in in extreme emotional turmoil and could barely get words out for her tears. And I just felt so strongly that this is torment from the enemy and that she does not have to…to fight this battle on her own. The battle belongs to the Lord. And, so right, now I just take authority over these…this demonic attack against her that is influencing her emotions to cause her this emotional turmoil as she called it but it’s more than that it is torment and it is painful. And, so, I speak to that torment and I tell you to stop in Jesus’ name. Stop it right now in Jesus’ name. And I speak peace. Peace to your heart, to your emotions, to your thoughts, and we take them captive to the thoughts of Jesus Christ. We ask Lord that she would realize that she has been given a Spirit not of fear or torment or timidity or even pain but one of power and of love and of a sound mind. I speak a sound mind to you. Rest in the Lord. Trust in His name. Thank you, Lord.

The Daily Audio Bible Reading for Thursday April 23, 2020 (NIV)

Judges 1:1-2:9

Jerusalem Is Captured

Now it came about after the death of Joshua, that the [a]sons (descendants) of Israel (Jacob) asked the Lord, “Who shall go up first for us against the Canaanites, to fight against them?” And the Lord said, “Judah shall go up [first]; behold, I have given the land into his hand.” And [the tribe of the sons of] Judah said to [the tribe of the sons of] Simeon his brother, “Come up with me into my allotted territory, so that we may fight against the Canaanites; and I likewise will go with you into your allotted territory.” So Simeon went with him. Then Judah went up, and the Lord gave the Canaanites and the Perizzites into their hand, and they struck down in defeat ten thousand men at Bezek. Then they found Adoni-bezek in Bezek and fought against him, and they struck down in defeat the Canaanites and the Perizzites. But Adoni-bezek fled; and they pursued him and caught him and cut off his thumbs and his big toes. Adoni-bezek said, “Seventy kings with their thumbs and big toes cut off used to gather up scraps of food under my table; as I have done [to others], so God has repaid me.” So they brought him to Jerusalem, and he died there.

Then the sons of Judah fought against [Jebusite] Jerusalem and [b]captured it and struck it with the edge of the sword and set the city on fire. Afterward the sons of Judah went down to fight against the Canaanites who lived in the hill country, in the Negev (South country) and in the lowland. 10 So Judah went against the Canaanites who lived in Hebron (the name of Hebron formerly was Kiriath-arba); and they defeated Sheshai and Ahiman and Talmai.

Capture of Other Cities

11 From there [the tribe of] Judah went against the inhabitants of Debir (the name of Debir formerly was Kiriath-sepher [city of books and scribes]). 12 And Caleb said, “Whoever attacks Kiriath-sepher and captures it, I will even give him my daughter Achsah as a wife.” 13 Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother, captured it; so he gave him his daughter Achsah as a wife. 14 When she came to Othniel, she persuaded him to [allow her to] ask her father [Caleb] for a field. Then she [rode up to Caleb and] dismounted from her donkey, and Caleb said to her, “What do you want?” 15 She said to him, “Give me a blessing; since you have given me the land of the Negev (South country), give me springs of water, too.” So Caleb gave her the upper springs and the lower springs.

16 The sons of [[c]Jethro] the Kenite, Moses’ father-in-law, went up from the City of Palms (Jericho) with the sons of Judah, to the wilderness of Judah which is in the Negev (South country) near Arad; and they went and lived with the people.(A) 17 Then [the warriors of the tribe of] Judah went with [the warriors of the tribe of] Simeon his brother, and they struck the Canaanites living in Zephath and utterly destroyed it. So the city was called Hormah (destruction). 18 Also [the warriors of] Judah captured Gaza with its territory and Ashkelon with its territory and Ekron with its territory. 19 The Lord was with Judah, and [the tribe of] Judah took possession of the hill country, but they could not dispossess and drive out those inhabiting the valley because they had iron chariots. 20 Then they gave Hebron to Caleb, as Moses had said, and he drove out from there the three sons of Anak.(B) 21 But the sons of Benjamin did not drive out the Jebusites who inhabited Jerusalem; so the Jebusites have lived with the sons of Benjamin in Jerusalem to this day.

22 The [d]house of Joseph also went up against Bethel, and the Lord was with them. 23 The house of Joseph spied out Bethel (now the name of the city was formerly Luz). 24 The spies saw a man coming out of the city and they said to him, “Please show us the entrance to the city and we will treat you kindly.” 25 So he showed them the entrance to the city, and they struck the city with the edge of the sword, but they let the man and all his family go free. 26 The man went into the [e]land of the Hittites and built a city and named it Luz, which is its name to this day.

Places Not Conquered

27 But [the tribe of] Manasseh did not take possession of Beth-shean and its villages, or Taanach and its villages, or the inhabitants of Dor and its villages, or the inhabitants of Ibleam and its villages, or the inhabitants of Megiddo and its villages; so the Canaanites remained in that land. 28 It happened when Israel became strong, that they put the Canaanites to forced labor, but they did not drive them out completely.

29 Neither did [the warriors of] Ephraim drive out the Canaanites who were living in Gezer; so the Canaanites lived in Gezer among them.

30 [The warriors of the tribe of] Zebulun did not drive out the inhabitants of Kitron or of Nahalol; so the Canaanites lived among them and were put to forced labor.

31 [The warriors of the tribe of] Asher did not drive out the inhabitants of Acco, or the inhabitants of Sidon, or of Ahlab, or of Achzib, or of Helbah, or of Aphik, or of Rehob. 32 So the Asherites lived among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land, because they did not drive them out.

33 Neither did [the warriors of] Naphtali drive out the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh, or the inhabitants of Beth-anath, but they lived among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land; and the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh and of Beth-anath became forced labor for them.

34 Then the [f]Amorites forced the sons of Dan [back] into the hill country, for they would not allow them to come down into the valley; 35 yet the Amorites persisted in living on Mount Heres (the mountain of the sun), in Aijalon, and in Shaalbim; but when the power of the house (descendants) of Joseph became strong and prevailed, they became forced labor. 36 The border of the Amorites ran from the ascent of Akrabbim, from [g]Sela (rock) and upward.

Israel Rebuked

Now the [h]Angel of the Lord came up from Gilgal to Bochim. And he said, “I brought you up from Egypt and led you to the land which I swore [to give] to your fathers; and I said, ‘I will never break My covenant with you,(C) and as for you, you shall not make a covenant with the inhabitants of this land; you shall tear down their altars.’ But you have not [i]obeyed Me; what is this that you have done? So I also said, ‘I will not drive your enemies out before you; but they will be like thorns in your sides and their gods will be a snare to you.’” When the Angel of the Lord had spoken these words to all the Israelites, the people raised their voices and wept. So they named that place Bochim (weepers); and there they offered sacrifices to the Lord.

Joshua Dies

And when Joshua had sent the people away, the [tribes of the] Israelites went each to his inheritance, to take possession of the land. The people served the Lord all the days of Joshua and all the days of the elders who outlived Joshua, who had seen all the great work of the Lord which He had done for Israel. Then Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of the Lord, died at the age of a hundred and ten. And they buried him in the territory of his inheritance in Timnath-heres, in the hill country of Ephraim, north of Mount Gaash.

Footnotes:

  1. Judges 1:1 In general, sons of Israel or Israel or Israelites refers to all the people (males and females) of the various tribes descended from the twelve sons (Gen 35:23-26) of Jacob (later renamed Israel by God). In verses concerning things such as warfare or circumcision sons of Israel or Israel or Israelites usually refers only to the males. Tribes of ancient people were identified by the name of their founding ancestor. Therefore, this same general rule applies when referring to individual tribal groups, e.g. sons of Reuben, Reuben, Reubenites and so throughout.
  2. Judges 1:8 Judah briefly captured Jerusalem, but could not hold and occupy it.
  3. Judges 1:16 Also called Reuel (Ex 2:18).
  4. Judges 1:22 I.e. the tribes of the descendants of Manasseh and Ephraim.
  5. Judges 1:26 I.e. Aram (northern Syria).
  6. Judges 1:34 Like the other Canaanites, the Amorites probably had iron chariots with which they controlled the valley.
  7. Judges 1:36 Some scholars identify Sela with Petra in modern day Jordan.
  8. Judges 2:1 “Angel” has been capitalized here to reflect the likelihood that it is God appearing in a visible form (see note Gen 16:7).
  9. Judges 2:2 Lit paid heed to My voice.

Luke 21:29-22:13

Parable of the Fig Tree

29 Then He told them a parable: “Look at the fig tree and all the trees;(A) 30 as soon as they put out leaves, you see it and know for yourselves that summer is near. 31 So you too, when you see these things happening, know [without any doubt] that the kingdom of God is near. 32 I assure you and most solemnly say to you, this generation [those living at that definite period of time preceding the second coming] will not pass away until [a]everything takes place. 33 Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will not pass away.

34 “But be on guard, so that your hearts are not weighed down and depressed with the giddiness of debauchery and the nausea of self-indulgence and the worldly worries of life, and then that day [when the Messiah returns] will not come on you suddenly like a trap; 35 for it will come upon all those who live on the face of all the earth. 36 But keep alert at all times [be attentive and ready], praying that you may have the strength and ability [to be found worthy and] to escape all these things that are going to take place, and to stand in the presence of the Son of Man [at His coming].”

37 Now in the daytime Jesus was teaching in [the porches and courts of] the temple, but at night He would go out and spend the night on the mount that is called Olivet. 38 And early in the morning all the people would come to Him in the temple to listen to Him.

Preparing the Passover

22 Now the Festival of Unleavened Bread, which is called the Passover, was approaching.(B) The chief priests and the scribes were looking for a way to put Him to death; for they were afraid of the people [who listened devotedly to His teaching, and who respected His spiritual wisdom].

Then Satan entered Judas, the one called Iscariot, who was one of the twelve [disciples]. And he went away and discussed with the chief priests and officers how he might betray Him and hand Him over to them. They were delighted and agreed with him to give him money. So he consented, and began looking for a good opportunity to betray Jesus to them [at a time when He was] separated from the crowd [because the people might riot or stop them from seizing Him].

Then came the preparation day of [b]Unleavened Bread on which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed.(C) So Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, “Go and prepare the Passover meal for us, so that we may eat it.” They asked Him, “Where do You want us to prepare it?” 10 He replied, “When you have entered the city, a [c]man carrying an earthen jar of water will meet you; follow him into the house that he enters. 11 And say to the owner of the house, ‘The Teacher asks, “Where is the guest room in which I may eat the Passover with My disciples?”’ 12 Then he will show you a large upstairs room, furnished [with carpets and dining couches]; prepare the meal there.” 13 They left and found it just as He had told them; and they prepared the Passover.

Footnotes:

  1. Luke 21:32 I.e. the establishment of God’s kingdom.
  2. Luke 22:7 This remembrance lasted eight days. The Passover lambs were selected on the tenth of Nisan (March/April) and sacrificed on the fourteenth of Nisan (the first day of the feast). The Passover meal was eaten that same night (15 Nisan). This was immediately followed by the Feast of Unleavened Bread (15-21 Nisan). The terms “Passover” and “The Feast of Unleavened Bread” were used interchangeably.
  3. Luke 22:10 It would have been unusual to see a manservant carrying a jar of water, because that was considered a woman’s task.

Psalm 90-91

Book Four

God’s Eternity and Man’s Transitoriness.

A Prayer of Moses the man of God.

90 Lord, You have been our dwelling place [our refuge, our sanctuary, our stability] in all generations.

Before the mountains were born
Or before You had given birth to the earth and the world,
Even from everlasting to everlasting, You are [the eternal] God.

You turn man back to dust,
And say, “Return [to the earth], O children of [mortal] men!”

For a [a]thousand years in Your sight
Are like yesterday when it is past,
Or as a watch in the night.(A)

You have swept them away like a flood, they fall asleep [forgotten as soon as they are gone];
In the morning they are like grass which grows anew—

In the morning it flourishes and springs up;
In the evening it wilts and withers away.

For we have been consumed by Your anger
And by Your wrath we have been terrified.

You have placed our wickedness before you,
Our secret sins [which we tried to conceal, You have placed] in the [revealing] light of Your presence.

For all our days pass away in Your wrath;
We have finished our years like a whispered sigh.(B)
10
The days of our life are [b]seventy years—
Or even, if because of strength, eighty years;
Yet their pride [in additional years] is only labor and sorrow,
For it is soon gone and we fly away.
11
Who understands the power of Your anger? [Who connects this brevity of life among us with Your judgment of sin?]
And Your wrath, [who connects it] with the [reverent] fear that is due You?
12
So teach us to number our days,
That we may cultivate and bring to You a heart of wisdom.

13
Turn, O Lord [from Your fierce anger]; how long will it be?
Be compassionate toward Your servants—revoke Your sentence.
14
O satisfy us with Your lovingkindness in the morning [now, before we grow older],
That we may rejoice and be glad all our days.
15
Make us glad in proportion to the days You have afflicted us,
And the years we have suffered evil.
16
Let Your work [the signs of Your power] be revealed to Your servants
And Your [glorious] majesty to their children.
17
And let the [gracious] favor of the Lord our God be on us;
Confirm for us the work of our hands—
Yes, confirm the work of our hands.

Security of the One Who Trusts in the Lord.

91 He who [c]dwells in the shelter of the Most High
Will remain secure and rest in the shadow of the Almighty [whose power no enemy can withstand].

I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress,
My God, in whom I trust [with great confidence, and on whom I rely]!”

For He will save you from the trap of the fowler,
And from the deadly pestilence.

He will cover you and completely protect you with His pinions,
And under His wings you will find refuge;
His faithfulness is a shield and a wall.

You will not be afraid of the terror of night,
Nor of the arrow that flies by day,

Nor of the pestilence that stalks in darkness,
Nor of the destruction (sudden death) that lays waste at noon.

A thousand may fall at your side
And ten thousand at your right hand,
But danger will not come near you.

You will only [be a spectator as you] look on with your eyes
And witness the [divine] repayment of the wicked [as you watch safely from the shelter of the Most High].

Because you have made the Lord, [who is] my refuge,
Even the Most High, your dwelling place,(C)
10
No evil will befall you,
Nor will any plague come near your tent.

11
For He will command His angels in regard to you,
To protect and defend and guard you in all your ways [of obedience and service].
12
They will lift you up in their hands,
So that you do not [even] strike your foot against a stone.(D)
13
You will tread upon the lion and cobra;
The young lion and the serpent you will trample underfoot.(E)

14
“Because he set his love on Me, therefore I will save him;
I will set him [securely] on high, because he knows My name [he confidently trusts and relies on Me, knowing I will never abandon him, no, never].
15
“He will call upon Me, and I will answer him;
I will be with him in trouble;
I will rescue him and honor him.
16
“With a long life I will satisfy him
And I will let him see My salvation.”

Footnotes:

  1. Psalm 90:4 This was understood by the ancient rabbis to mean that a “thousand years” are literally only one day in God’s reckoning, and Peter seems to confirm the idea in 2 Pet 3:8.
  2. Psalm 90:10 This psalm is credited to Moses, who is interceding with God to remove the curse which made it necessary for every Israelite over twenty years of age (when they rebelled against God at Kadesh-barnea) to die before reaching the promised land of Canaan (Num 14:26-35). Moses himself lived to be 120 years old, Aaron 123, Miriam several years older, and Joshua 110 years of age; but it is conceivable that Moses considered such longevity the exception. The ancient rabbis taught that by the time of David, 70 was the age of death for an old man and 80 for a vigorous old man.
  3. Psalm 91:1 The wonderful promises of this chapter are dependent upon one’s meeting the conditions stated in these first two verses (see Ex 15:26).

24
He who withholds the rod [of discipline] hates his son,
But he who loves him disciplines and trains him diligently and appropriately [with wisdom and love].(A)

But the stomach of the wicked is in need [of bread].

Joshua 24:1-33, Luke 21:1-28, Psalms 89:38-52, Proverbs 13:20-23

Today is the 22nd day of April welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I’m Brian it’s great to be here with you as…well…as we gather to take the next step forward in the adventure that we’re on through the Bible. And today…today is going to be a final day. We’re going to conclude another book, the book of Joshua in the Old Testament, and this will end in era. Actually, things will be very, very different after Joshua, as we’ll learn in the days ahead as we continue our journey forward. But this is one of those kind of apex moments, one of these moments in the history of ancient Israel that we’re reading through in the Bible where things were good and had reached kind of zenith. And following in the footsteps of Moses, like we’ll remember that the entire book of Deuteronomy was the last things that Moses needed, wanted desired, must communicate to the children of Israel before they would cross the Jordan into the Promised Land. Joshua has reached the end of his life as well. These are the last things that he has to say. And, so, we’re reading from the Amplified Bible this week. Joshua chapter 24.

Commentary:

Okay. So, as we concluded the book of Joshua, we have a pretty riveting, pretty impassioned plea from Joshua and these are the final things, this is the final charge of his life to these people that he’s led across the Jordan River. And his plea is that they would serve the Lord, that they would serve God with all their hearts, they would not return to false gods, that they would serve only the Lord God, the one true most-high God. And he is warning them like, “if you deviate from this you will destroy yourself”, but he also brings something starkly clear because he’s telling them, “if…if you’re not going to listen to me you’re not going to be able to be with God but also with the other gods that you’re turning to for life or prosperity or whatever. God’s not going to share you. So, if you…if it’s unacceptable for you to serve the Lord, then choose who you’re going to serve.” And that’s when he says the famous words, “as for me and my house we will serve the Lord.” And something rises up within us when we hear those words doesn’t it? Like something…like we’re like, “me too. As for me and my house we will serve the Lord.” It’s fantastic declaration. It’s a beautiful moment in the Bible, but Joshua presses into that. “You will not be able to serve the Lord if you serve any other gods. He’s a holy God. He’s a jealous God. He demands what is uniquely and rightfully His.” He’s pressing in on them. This is not just something that they can declare it’s something that they have to be. And then we find ourselves in the stories like we always do. We can say those words. We can say, “as for me and my house we will serve the Lord”, but inside the walls of that house can be utter and complete chaos. It can…it’s not enough to say it we have to be it. So, Joshua presses in on them and they respond, “no, no, no, we will only serve the Lord.” And then Joshua says something that is really riveting because it is no less a factor right this second than it was when he spoke the words out of his mouth. “You are witnesses against yourselves that you have chosen for yourselves the Lord to serve Him.” We live in a world where, you know, kind of diverting blame funneling it away from ourselves and onto somebody else or under some other circumstance where nothing’s really “our” fault. I mean that’s kind of the norm, but that all starts to fall apart when you hear the words “you are a witness against yourself. Like you will affirm or deny by your own thoughts, words and deeds, whether what you are saying is actually the truth.” So, if you’re gonna say, “as for me and my house we will serve the Lord”, then we must also realize that we are witnesses against ourselves about whether or not that’s the truth, right?  That takes it out of the ether and makes it a tangible thing sitting square in our lap. And that’s good. It’s like cold water that gets thrown into your face. You don’t like that. But you’re awake. That’s like getting slapped across the face and you might be really really angry about that until you realize that the house is burning down and somebody’s trying to save your life by smacking you across the face and waking you up. We are witnesses against ourselves. We will affirm or deny not just with what we say but by who we are. And, so let’s live into that today. As stark as it is it is so needed and is so helpful. Are our words for show or do our words reflect who we are?

Prayer:

Father, we invite Your Holy Spirit into that question as we meditate upon it today. This gives us an opportunity to confront what is false within us. But in order to confront the darkness, in order to confront what is false we have to see it. And, so we invite Your Holy Spirit to show us these areas where we might be saying “as for me and my house we will serve the Lord”, but in practice we are turning to so many other things to give us life and to give us hope. And we acknowledge Father that the road ahead in the Scriptures is gonna show us how that can disintegrate, how You can have this statement, but if it doesn’t become who You are, how things over time begin to fall back apart again. And we know this because we’ve lived it and we’re tired of it. We actually want to plant the flag, “as for me, and as for my house we will serve the Lord.” And, so, we begin Father by simply asking, “where are we not? Where have we gone astray?” Come with Your comfort and guidance, come with Your correction, come with Your rebuke, come and lead us back to the narrow path that leads to life, we ask in Jesus’ name. Amen.

There’s…there’s nothing…nothing really that…that sooths sort of the…the bigger questions and the anxieties that can come at us, then…then actually trying to reach outward out of ourselves beyond our circumstances toward each other. And, so, this is always available, always on. So, check that out.

Check out the Daily Audio Bible Shop. There are resources there for our journey, lots of different kinds of resources. I haven’t spoken in a while about the resource called, “The God of Your Story.” I don’t know why. I mean it was like one of the most difficult uphill climbs of a project that I have ever, ever, ever been on. Like on paper it was like. “of course, trying to write down maybe some of the best thoughts, the best things, the best path that we’ve taken through the Bible, to write that down should be easy because this is what we do every day”, but it wasn’t. And just…just…to write down the things like in written form really, really trying to dig into offering in written form the gold of the Daily Audio Bible over these last 15 years, that was difficult. But it is out, it is available wherever you can get a book, including at the Daily Audio Bible Shop where the proceeds, all of the proceeds of the Daily Audio Bible Shop support the Daily Audio Bible. So, it's…it’s a good place to go. But “The God of Your Story”, you can get that anywhere you can get a book. It’s just…it’s a tangible written 365-day journey through the Scriptures like the one that we’re on but in written form, which communicates in a different way. And having that tangible form, you know, like if the Internet’s out or whatever, then you just keep on going. But if you’re listening to the Daily Audio Bible and you kinda wanna regroup and end your day, and kind of look at the same passage of Scripture maybe from a different perspective, it is a fantastic resource for that. That’s what it was made for. So, check out this latest written resource, “The God of Your Story at the Daily Audio Bible Shop.

Joshua 24

Joshua Reviews Israel’s History

24 Then Joshua gathered all the tribes of Israel to Shechem, and called for the elders of Israel and for their heads and for their judges and for their officers; they presented themselves before God. Joshua said to all the people, “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says, ‘Your fathers, including Terah, the father of Abraham and the father of Nahor, lived beyond the [Euphrates] River in ancient times; and they served other gods. Then I took your father Abraham from beyond the [Euphrates] River and led him through all the land of Canaan, and multiplied his descendants, and I gave him Isaac. To Isaac I gave Jacob and Esau, and to Esau I gave [the hill country of] Mount Seir to possess; but Jacob and his sons went down to Egypt. Then I sent Moses and Aaron, and I plagued Egypt by what I did in its midst; and afterward I brought you out. Then I brought your fathers out of Egypt, and you came to the sea; and the Egyptians pursued your fathers with chariots and horsemen to the Red Sea. When they cried out to the Lord [for help], He put darkness between you and the Egyptians, and brought the sea upon them and covered them; and your own eyes saw what I did in Egypt. And you lived in the wilderness [a]a long time (forty years).(A) Then I brought you into the land of the Amorites who lived on the other side of the Jordan, and they fought with you; and I gave them into your hand, and you took possession of their land and I destroyed them before you. Then Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab, arose and fought against Israel, and he sent and called Balaam the son of Beor to curse you. 10 But I would not listen to Balaam. Therefore he had to bless you, so I saved you from Balak’s hand.(B) 11 You crossed the Jordan and came to Jericho; and the citizens of Jericho fought against you, as did the Amorite and the Perizzite and the Canaanite and the Hittite and the Girgashite, the Hivite and the Jebusite; and so I gave them into your hand. 12 I sent the hornet [that is, the terror of you] before you, which drove the two kings of the Amorites out before you; but it was not by your sword or by your bow.(C) 13 I gave you a land for which you did not labor, and cities which you did not build, and you live in them; you eat from vineyards and olive groves which you did not plant.’

14 “Now, therefore, fear the Lord and serve Him in sincerity and in truth; remove the gods which your fathers served on the other side of the [Euphrates] River and in Egypt, and serve the Lord. 15 If it is unacceptable in your sight to serve the Lord, choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve: whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you live; but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”

16 The people answered, “Far be it from us to abandon (reject) the Lord to serve other gods; 17 for the Lord our God is He who brought us and our fathers up out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage, and who did these great signs (miracles) in our sight and kept us safe all along the way that we went and among all the peoples among whom we passed. 18 The Lord drove all the peoples out from before us, even the Amorites who lived in the land. We also will serve the Lord, for He is our God.”

19 Then Joshua said to the people, “You will not be able to serve the Lord [if you serve any other gods], for He is a holy God; He is a [b]jealous God [demanding what is rightfully and uniquely His]. He will not forgive your transgression [of His law] or your sins. 20 If you do abandon (reject) the Lord and serve foreign gods, then He will turn and do you harm and consume and destroy you after He has done you good.” 21 The people said to Joshua, “No, but we will serve [only] the Lord.” 22 Joshua then said to the people, “You are witnesses against yourselves that you have chosen for yourselves the Lord, to serve Him.” And they said, “We are witnesses.” 23 “Now then, remove the foreign gods which are among you, and incline your hearts toward the Lord, the God of Israel.” 24 The people said to Joshua, “We will serve the Lord our God and we will listen to and obey His voice.” 25 So Joshua made a covenant with the people that day, and made for them a statute and an ordinance at Shechem. 26 And Joshua wrote these words in the Book of the Law of God. Then he took a large stone and set it up there under the oak that was in [the courtyard of] the sanctuary of the Lord. 27 Joshua then said to all the people, “Look, this stone shall serve as a witness against us, for it has heard all the words of the Lord which He spoke to us; so it shall be a witness against you, so that [afterward] you do not deny your God.” 28 Then Joshua sent the people away, each to [the territory of] his inheritance.

Joshua’s Death and Burial

29 It happened after these things that Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of the Lord, died, at the age of a hundred and ten years. 30 They buried him in the territory of his inheritance in Timnath-serah, which is in the hill country of Ephraim, on the north side of Mount Gaash.

31 Israel served the Lord all the days of Joshua and all the days of the elders who outlived Joshua, and had known all the works of the Lord which He had done for Israel.

32 Now they buried the bones of Joseph, which the children of Israel brought up from Egypt, at Shechem, in the plot of land which Jacob had bought from the sons of Hamor the father of Shechem for a hundred pieces of money; and it became the inheritance of the sons of Joseph. 33 And Eleazar [the priest], the son of Aaron died; and they buried him at Gibeah [on the hill] of Phinehas his son, which had been given to him in the hill country of Ephraim.

Luke 21:1-28

The Widow’s Gift

21 Looking up, He saw the rich people putting their gifts into the treasury.(A) And He saw a poor widow putting in two [a]small copper coins. He said, “Truly I say to you, this poor widow has put in [proportionally] more than all of them; for they all put in gifts from their abundance; but she out of her poverty put in all she had to live on.”

As some were talking about the [b]temple, that it was decorated with beautiful stones and consecrated offerings [of magnificent gifts of gold which were displayed on the walls and hung in the porticoes], He said,(B) “As for all these things which you see, the time will come when there will not be one stone left on another that will not be [c]torn down.”

They asked Him, “Teacher, when will these things happen? And what will be the sign when these things are about to happen?” He said, “Be careful and see to it that you are not misled; for many will come in My name [appropriating for themselves the name Messiah which belongs to Me alone], saying, ‘I am He,’ and, ‘The time is near!’ Do not follow them. When you hear of wars and disturbances [civil unrest, revolts, uprisings], do not panic; for these things must take place first, but the end will not come immediately.”

Things to Come

10 Then Jesus told them, “Nation will rise against nation and kingdom against kingdom.(C) 11 There will be violent earthquakes, and in various places famines and [deadly and devastating] pestilences (plagues, epidemics); and there will be terrible sights and great signs from heaven.

12 “But before all these things, they will lay their hands on you and will persecute you, turning you over to the synagogues and prisons, and bringing you before kings and governors for My name’s sake.(D) 13 This will be a time and an opportunity for you to testify [about Me]. 14 So make up your minds not to prepare beforehand to defend yourselves; 15 for I will give you [skillful] words and wisdom which none of your opponents will be able to resist or refute. 16 But you will be betrayed and handed over even by parents and brothers and relatives and friends, and they will put some of you to death, 17 and you will be continually hated by everyone because of [your association with] My name. 18 But not a hair of your head will perish.(E) 19 By your [patient] endurance [empowered by the Holy Spirit] you will gain your souls.

20 “But when you see Jerusalem surrounded by [hostile] armies, then understand [with confident assurance] that her complete destruction is near. 21 At that time, those who are in Judea must flee to the mountains, and those who are inside the city (Jerusalem) must get out, and those who are [out] in the country must not enter the city; 22 for these are days of vengeance [of rendering full justice or satisfaction], so that all things which are written will be fulfilled. 23 Woe to those women who are pregnant and to those who are nursing babies in those days! For great trouble and anguish will be on the land, and wrath and retribution on this people [Israel]. 24 And they will fall by the edge of the sword, and will be led captive into all nations; and Jerusalem will be trampled underfoot by the Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled (completed).(F)

The Return of Christ

25 “There will be signs (attesting miracles) in the sun and moon and stars; and on the earth [there will be] distress and anguish among nations, in perplexity at the roaring and tossing of the sea and the waves,(G) 26 people fainting from fear and expectation of the [dreadful] things coming on the world; for the [very] powers of the heavens will be shaken. 27 Then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with [transcendent, overwhelming] power [subduing the nations] and with great glory.(H) 28 Now when these things begin to occur, stand tall and lift up your heads [in joy], because [suffering ends as] your redemption is drawing near.”

Psalm 89:38-52

38
But [in apparent contradiction of all this] You [the faithful Lord] have cast off and rejected;
You have been full of wrath against Your anointed.
39
You have spurned and repudiated the covenant with Your servant;
You have profaned his crown [by casting it] in the dust.
40
You have broken down all his [city] walls;
You have brought his strongholds to ruin.
41
All who pass along the road rob him;
He has become the scorn of his neighbors.
42
You have exalted the right hand of his foes;
You have made all his enemies rejoice.
43
Also, You have turned back the edge of his sword
And have not made him [strong enough] to stand in battle.
44
You have put an end to his splendor
And have hurled his throne to the ground.
45
You have shortened the days of his youth;
You have covered him with shame. Selah.

46
How long, O Lord?
Will You hide Yourself forever?
Will Your wrath burn like fire?
47
Remember how fleeting my lifetime is;
For what vanity, [for what emptiness, for what futility, for what wisp of smoke] You have created all the sons of men!
48
What man can live and not see death?
Can he rescue his soul from the [powerful] hand of Sheol (the nether world, the place of the dead)? Selah.

49
O Lord, where are Your former lovingkindnesses [so abundant in the days of David and Solomon],
Which You swore to David in Your faithfulness?
50
Remember, O Lord, the reproach of Your servants [scorned, insulted, and disgraced];
How I bear in [a]my heart the reproach of all the many peoples,
51
With which Your enemies have taunted, O Lord,
With which they have mocked the footsteps of Your anointed.

52
Blessed be the Lord forevermore!
Amen and Amen.

Proverbs 13:20-23

20
He who walks [as a companion] with wise men will be wise,
But the companions of [conceited, dull-witted] fools [are fools themselves and] will experience harm.(A)
21
Adversity pursues sinners,
But the [consistently] upright will be rewarded with prosperity.
22
A good man leaves an inheritance to his children’s children,
And the wealth of the sinner is stored up for [the hands of] the righteous.
23
Abundant food is in the fallow (uncultivated) ground of the poor,
But [without protection] it is swept away by injustice.

Joshua 22:21-23:16

21 Then the sons of Reuben and the sons of Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh answered and said to the heads of the families of Israel, 22 “The Mighty One, God, the Lord, the Mighty One, God, the Lord! He knows, and may Israel itself know. If it was in rebellion, or if in an unfaithful act against the Lord, do not save us this day! 23 If we have built an altar for ourselves to turn away from following the Lord, or if [we did so] to offer a burnt offering or grain offering on it, or if to offer sacrifices of peace offerings on it, may the Lord Himself require it [of us and hold us responsible]. 24 But in truth we have done this out of concern, for a reason, saying, ‘In time to come your sons (descendants) may say to our sons, “What [a]claim do you have to the Lord, the God of Israel? 25 For the Lord has made the Jordan a border between us and you, you sons of Reuben and sons of Gad; you have no part in the Lord.” So your sons (descendants) may cause our sons to stop fearing the Lord.’

26 “So we said, ‘Let us prepare and build an altar, not for burnt offering or for sacrifice, 27 but to be a witness between us and you and between the generations after us, that we are to perform the service of the Lord before Him with our burnt offerings, and with our sacrifices and with our peace offerings, so that your sons (descendants) will not say to our sons in time to come, “You have no part in the Lord.”’ 28 So we said, ‘If your descendants should say this to us or to our descendants in time to come, then we can reply, “See the copy of the altar of the Lord which our fathers made, not for burnt offering or for sacrifice, but rather it is a witness between us and you.”’ 29 Far be it from us that we should rebel against the Lord and turn away from following the Lord this day, by building an altar for burnt offering, for grain offering or for sacrifice, besides the altar of the Lord our God which is before His [b]tabernacle [in Shiloh].”

30 So when Phinehas the priest and the leaders of the congregation and heads of the families of Israel who were with him, heard the words which the sons of Reuben and the sons of Gad and the sons of Manasseh spoke, it [c]pleased them. 31 Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest said to the sons of Reuben and the sons of Gad and the sons of Manasseh, “Today we know that the Lord is among us, because you have not committed this unfaithful act against the Lord; indeed you have saved Israel from the hand of the Lord.”

32 Then Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest and the leaders returned from the sons of Reuben and the sons of Gad, from the land of Gilead to the land of Canaan, to the sons of Israel, and brought back word to them. 33 The report [d]pleased the sons of Israel, and the sons of Israel blessed God; and they said no more about going to battle against them to destroy the land in which the sons of Reuben and the sons of Gad were living. 34 The sons of Reuben and the sons of Gad called the altar Witness; “For it is a witness between us that the Lord is God.”

Joshua’s Farewell Address

23 A long time after that, when the Lord had given Israel rest from all their enemies [e]on every side, and Joshua had grown old and [f]advanced in years, that Joshua called all Israel, their elders and their heads and their judges and their officers, and said to them, “I am old and advanced in years. And you have seen all that the Lord your God has done to all these nations for your sake; for the Lord your God is He who has been fighting for you.(A) See, I have allotted to you these nations that remain as an inheritance for your tribes, with all the nations which I have cut off, from the Jordan [on the east] to the Great [Mediterranean] Sea toward the setting sun. The Lord your God will push them away from before you and drive them out of your sight and you will take possession of their land, just as the Lord your God [g]promised you. Be steadfast and very determined to keep and to do everything that is written in the Book of the Law of Moses, so that you do not turn aside from it to the right or the left, so that you do not associate with these nations which remain among you, or mention the name of their gods, or make anyone swear [an oath by them], or serve them, or bow down to them. But you are to cling to the Lord your God, just as you have done to this day. For the Lord has driven out great and mighty nations from before you; and as for you, no man has been able to stand [in opposition] before you to this day. 10 One of your men puts to flight a thousand, for the Lord your God is He who is fighting for you, just as He [h]promised you. 11 So be very careful and watchful of yourselves to [i]love the Lord your God. 12 For if you ever turn back and cling to the rest of these nations, these that are left among you, and intermarry with them, so that you associate with them and they with you, 13 know and understand with certainty that the Lord your God will not continue to drive these nations out from before you; but they will be a snare and trap to you, and a whip on your sides and thorns in your eyes, until you perish from this good land which the Lord your God has given you.

14 “Now behold, today I am going the way of all the earth, and you know in all your hearts and in all your souls that not one word of all the good words which the Lord your God has promised concerning you has failed; all have been fulfilled for you, not one of them has failed. 15 It shall come about that just as every good word which the Lord your God spoke and promised to you has [j]been fulfilled for you, so the Lord will bring upon you every bad thing [about which He warned you], until He has destroyed and eliminated you from this good land which the Lord your God has given you. 16 When you transgress (violate) the covenant of the Lord your God, which He commanded you [to follow], and you go and serve other gods and bow down to them, then the anger of the Lord will be kindled against you, and you shall perish quickly from the good land which He has given you.”

Luke 20:27-47

Is There a Resurrection?

27 Now some of the Sadducees (who say that there is no resurrection) came to Him(A) 28 and they questioned Him, saying, “Teacher, Moses wrote for us [a law that] if a man’s brother dies, leaving a wife and no children, his brother should [a]marry the wife and raise children for his brother.(B) 29 Now there were seven brothers; and the first took a wife and died childless. 30 And the second, 31 and the third married her, and in the same way all seven died, leaving no children. 32 Finally the woman also died. 33 So in the [life after] resurrection, whose wife does she become? For all seven had married her.”

34 Jesus said to them, “The sons of this [world and present] age marry and [the women] are given in marriage; 35 but those who are considered worthy to gain that [other world and that future] age and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry nor are given in marriage; 36 and they cannot die again, because they are [immortal] like the angels (equal to, angel-like). And they are [b]children of God, being [c]participants in the resurrection. 37 But [as for the fact] that the dead are raised [from death], even Moses showed, in the passage about the burning bush, when he calls the Lord the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.(C) 38 Now He is not the God of the dead, but of the living [so these forefathers will be among the resurrected]; for all live [in a definite relationship] to Him.” 39 Some of the scribes replied, “Teacher, you have spoken well [so that there is no room for blame].” 40 And they did not dare to question Him further about anything [because of the wisdom He displayed in His answers].

41 Then He said to them, “How is it that people say that the Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed) is David’s son?(D) 42 For David himself says in the book of Psalms,

The Lord (the Father) said to my Lord (the Son, the Messiah),
Sit at My right hand,
43
Until I make Your enemies a footstool for Your feet.”’(E)

44 [d]So David calls Him (the Son) ‘Lord,’ and how then is He David’s son?”

45 And with all the people listening, He said to His disciples, 46 “Beware of the scribes, who like to walk around in long robes [displaying their prominence], and love respectful greetings in the [crowded] market places, and [e]chief seats in the synagogues and places of honor at banquets. 47 These [men] who confiscate and devour widows’ houses, and for a pretense [to appear devout] offer long prayers. These [men] will receive the greater [sentence of] condemnation.”

Psalm 89:14-37

14
Righteousness and justice are the foundation of Your throne;
Lovingkindness and truth go before You.
15
Blessed and happy are the people who know the joyful sound [of the trumpet’s blast]!
They walk, O Lord, in the light and favor of Your countenance!
16
In Your name they rejoice all the day,
And in Your righteousness they are exalted.
17
For You are the glory of their strength [their proud adornment],
And by Your favor our horn is exalted.
18
For our shield belongs to the Lord,
And our king to the Holy One of Israel.

19
Once You spoke in a vision to Your godly ones,
And said, “I have given help to one who is mighty [giving him the power to be a champion for Israel];
I have exalted one chosen from the people.
20
“I have found David My servant;
With My holy oil I have anointed him,(A)
21
With whom My hand shall be established and steadfast;
My arm also shall strengthen him.
22
“The enemy will not outwit him,
Nor will the wicked man afflict or humiliate him.
23
“I will crush his adversaries before him,
And strike those who hate him.
24
“My faithfulness and My steadfast lovingkindness shall be with him,
And in My name shall his horn be exalted [great power and prosperity shall be conferred upon him].
25
“I will also [a]set his hand on the [Mediterranean] sea,
And his right hand on the rivers [the tributaries of the Euphrates].
26
“He will cry to Me, ‘You are my Father,
My God, and the rock of my salvation.’
27
“I will also make him My firstborn (preeminent),
The highest of the kings of the earth.(B)
28
“My lovingkindness I will keep for him forevermore,
And My covenant will be confirmed to him.
29
“His descendants I will establish forever,
And his throne [will endure] as the days of heaven.(C)

30
“If his children [b]turn away from My law
And do not walk in My ordinances,
31
If they break My statutes
And do not keep My commandments,
32
Then I will punish their transgression with the rod [of discipline],
And [correct] their wickedness with stripes.(D)
33
“Nevertheless, I will not break off My lovingkindness from him,
Nor allow My faithfulness to fail.
34
“My covenant I will not violate,
Nor will I alter the utterance of My lips.
35
“Once [for all] I have sworn by My holiness, [My vow which cannot be violated];
I will not lie to David.
36
“His [c]descendants shall endure forever
And his throne [will continue] as the sun before Me.(E)
37
“It shall be established forever like the moon,
And the witness in the heavens is ever faithful.”(F) Selah.

Proverbs 13:17-19

17
A wicked messenger falls into hardship,
But a faithful ambassador brings healing.
18
Poverty and shame will come to him who refuses instruction and discipline,
But he who accepts and learns from reproof or censure is honored.
19
Desire realized is sweet to the soul;
But it is detestable to fools to turn away from evil [which they have planned].

Joshua 22:21-23:16, Luke 20:27-47, Psalms 89:14-37, Proverbs 13:17-19

Today is the 21st day of April welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I am Brian it’s great to be here with you for another day, another step forward in the adventure that we are on, the one that takes us all the way through the Bible in a year, day by day step-by-step together in community. And I’m glad that we can be together today. So, like every other day we’re picking up where we left off and where we left off yesterday in the Old Testament is in the book of Joshua and there’s some drama because there’s two and a half tribes that were given land on the west side of the Jordan River, provided that they would cross the Jordan River onto the east side into the Promised Land and help their fellow tribesmen settle the land, which they did. And then they were dismissed. So, they were headed back to the other side of the Jordan, and they built an altar that has caused a lot of confusion and that’s where we pick up the story. Joshua chapter 22 verse 21 through 23 verse 16.

Commentary:

Okay. So, we have almost completed the book of Joshua, which is the first book that tells kind of what happens after Moses becomes a part of history hen Joshua takes leadership. And, so, Joshua’s now telling us that he’s old and he’s about to die and we’re gonna be finishing the book of Joshua tomorrow, but this story that we’ve spent the last couple of days working our way through in the book of Joshua has some really, really important advice embedded in it for us now in the times that we’re facing, for that matter for times anybody’s ever facing but it’s appropriate for us now. So…so, we remember being on the other side of the Jordan River, right? We remember wandering around in the desert for all that time and finally getting to the Jordan and finally getting to crossover and we remember that the tribes of Ruben and Gad and half the tribe of Manasseh, they loved the land that was on the eastern side of the Jordan River. It was perfect for shepherding. It was perfect for what they did. And they went to this whole thing with Moses about, “could they have this land?” And Moses telling them, “you’re gonna…you’re gonna not cross over?” This whole negotiation happened, and it worked out that if they would cross over, fight with their brother tribes, settle the land, then they could come back and have the land that had been conquered on the east side of the Jordan. And that happened. They…they were faithful, and they were true to that. They did that and they were given their leave. Everything was good until they got back to the Jordan River and erected a replica of the altar of God. What it looked like was that the tribe of Gad and Ruben and half the tribe of Manasseh were going to go back over on the other side of the Jordan and that was gonna become a boundary and they were turning away, like they were rebelling. They were turning away from God. They had made their own altar, which got all the tribes in the Promised Land on the western side of the Jordan River together to go like, “if we let this happen then all of us are going to be destroyed.” So, they all got together and they’ve all been battle worn, like they have been fighting and are used to combat and they’re…they’re gonna go attack their brothers, their gonna go attack these two and half tribes because it appears the two and half tribes have rebelled against God, which will bring judgment upon them all and they’re ready to go. Thankfully they went, thankfully they sent somebody to find out the other side of the story, to find out why they would build this altar, why they would have rebelled against God. If they hadn’t done that they would’ve raced down, and the Jordan River would’ve run red with blood. It would’ve been awful Civil War. But they went down and asked and the two and half tribes were like, “absolutely! We would never turn away from God. We built this replica because we’re…were worried that the Jordan is gonna be a border and someday in the future the people on the east side of the Jordan are going to say to the people on the west side, “you have no place with God.” And, so, they built this this altar as a memorial, as a witness for future generations about who follows God. Here’s where this gets personal. The tribes on the east side of the Jordan River who were settling this newly conquered Promised Land, heard a rumor. They heard a story about an altar and about a rebellion and they took that bit of information, that rumor and started fabricating assumptions about what it meant, creating this plausible understanding, this plausible reality, and then began to live into that plausible reality created by a rumor to the point that, like the militaries being called out, to the point that the plan to attack their brothers who had fought alongside them was being hatched. That’s what can happen with a rumor and assumptions. That’s what can happen with disinformation and this kind of stuff happens personally individually, like we make up assumptions about things all of the time and…and we’re not very good at it. And, so, our assumptions invariably are flawed, but we’re making up realities about people that might have some truth in them but are not true. In the case of the story that we’re reading it was true, an altar had been erected. It was not true that it had been erected to rebel against God and offer sacrifices to false gods. The fill-in the blank part, the assumption part could’ve caused bloody Civil War. So, now you can see how we do this to each other and we suffer the consequences of doing it to each other, whether it’s just like a personal fracturing of a relationship are the disintegration of a friendship or whether it’s on national or even international levels. This stuff happens and these rumors and false assumptions, like the fabrications of reality that we then live into and believe can have us attacking our brothers and sisters for no reason. If we want to take the lesson from the Bible here, is that there was a moment of pause, right? Wisdom was at the crossroads. And they’re like, “yeah, before we go down there and start swinging swords, we should send an envoy to go find out what in the heck, like what’s happening? Why the altar? What is this about? Once the story was corrected, once the assumptions were exposed, once the rumor fell apart then things made sense. That is so often…so often the case in our personal interactions. So, let’s take a lesson from ancient Israel and apply it to modern life today.

Prayer:

Jesus, we invite you into that. We confess and it’s not like you don’t know, it’s not like you haven’t seen us take these missteps so often that it’s embarrassing. We have made assumptions. We have listened to rumors. We have listened to chatter. We have formulated plausible explanations. We have made up false realities and lived like they were true. We are all guilty of this. And if we would pause, if we would slow down and meditate upon us, just think back over our lives, we would see the chaos and destruction that it has caused in our rearview mirror, but our rearview mirror isn’t our windshield. What has happened does not have to continue happening. We don’t have to consume rumor and gossip and assumption like it’s some sort of delicious delicacy. We can see it for the putrid disease-ridden poison that it is. And, so, Holy Spirit we ask that you help us to stop making things up, to actually go find out what’s really going on in our relationships. We need you in this. Our default is usually to go to dark and negative places when we need the default to be light and life and good news and hope and charity. So, come Holy Spirit into all of this as we meditate upon it today, as we catch ourselves going into those dark places. Stop us. Give us the opportunity to go wait, wait, wait, wait, “I’m not going there. That doesn’t go anywhere good.” Help us Jesus we pray in your mighty name, we ask. Amen.

Announcements:

dailyaudiobible.com is home base, it is the website, its where you find out what’s going on around here and there’s, you know, usually something or another going on around here. We’ve been…I guess all of us in one way or another have been…well…we’ve been working on how to…how to work through this virus thing. And now the language is like, “how do we come out of this virus thing?” And I have had interactions with lots of people who have, you know, like introverts and extroverts have been dealing with this in very, very different ways. But introvert or extrovert I’ve talked to all kinds people who have this feeling like, “I want to get out of this, but I don’t want to be the same. Like I don’t want to go…I don’t want to just try to go right back to where I left off. I want to be…I want to be different. Like, this is shifting some things and giving me a chance kind of look at the disruption and see like that treadmill that I lived on was also not getting me anywhere. And I…I mean I don’t like going through this anymore than anybody else does, but I do like to hear those kinds of things because that’s really why we come to the Bible every day, right? Is to let God’s word wash over us, to sort of inform where we’re going, and even in the day that we’re gonna live, like how we’re gonna live this. That’s how change happens, little by little, day by day, step-by-step. So, in lots of ways we’re thinking about new normal. And that can sound ominous, like, you know, some…something really bad happened and now this is a new normal or we can just understand like, “I’ve been disrupted and it’s given me an opportunity to reset, to find new normals that are more healthy across the board.” So, I guess that’s some of what we’re all going through around here but around the Global Campfire, you know, we’re always here, we’re always talking about these kinds of things. This is the kinds of stuff that the Bible brings up in us. And, so, this is…yeah…stay connected to this rhythm as we continue our journey forward.

Check out the community section. That’s a great…there are great ways to stay connected there, including the Prayer Wall.

Check out the Daily Audio Bible Shop. There are resources there specifically for the journey that we’re on as we move through the Bible.

If you want to partner with the Daily Audio Bile I don’t know what words I can use to express the gratitude other than awe and gratefulness that the Global Campfire burns, like that every day we’re throwing logs on it, every day it’s here. And that is because we’re in this together. So, thank you for your partnership. There’s a link on the homepage at dailyaudiobible.com. If you’re using the Daily Audio Bible app…and by the way if you’re using the Daily Audio Bible app…I mean you know that we released a very very massive update to the app last week. And as is normal, when somethings that big of…of an infrastructure shift happens then there’s gonna be little hiccups here and there. And, so, worked all last week to update the update, like you find out immediately certain things that you couldn’t know in any kind of other environment and update those things. So…so make sure you stay to the most recent update, which is now 1.1.60 that fixed pretty much all of the little issues that different people were experiencing. Actually, for the most part everybody was…everything worked perfect, but there’s always different phones and there’s always different environments and circumstances and settings and stuff like that. So, make sure your updated. Everything should work really great and the badges, the achievements, the progress that we’re making as we move through the Scriptures, as we check off the days that we’re listening to, that’s working great. But anyway, you can press the Give button in the upper right-hand corner of the app screen or the mailing address is PO Box 1996 Spring Hill Tennessee 37174.

And, as always, if you have a prayer request or encouragement, you can hit the Hotline button in the app, or you can dial 877-942-4253.

And that’s it for today. I’m Brian I love you and I’ll be waiting for you here tomorrow.

Good morning DABbers this is Still Waters calling in from the Netherlands. I’m a new DABber I started back in January. I found the Daily Audio Bible in December last year and I thought, “okay. Let me have a look at this.” But then when I started, I couldn’t stop I kept being drawn back to it. So, thank you very much Brian. And I just want to encourage everyone because today on the 18th of April we read from Luke 19 and the story of the __ just reading __. The __ was a chief, a chief tax collector which meant he was very rich. And look at him, he had no reputation to keep anymore, he was short, he was a tax collector, a chief tax collector __. And he wanted to experience Jesus, so he had to climb a tree. And when Jesus called out his name, my goodness, I can only imagine how he felt. The great joy, excitement that he was filled with, I felt it, that excitement, that every human being, every believer should feel once they say yes to Jesus Christ. And salvation my friends, I like to encourage everyone that salvation is a life lived with great joy and excitement. And let us all just enjoy…enjoy the love of Jesus Christ with great excitement, with great joy and share His love for the world. Thank you, Brian for Sneezing Jesus it was lovely to listen to. Thank you. Bye-bye. Have a lovely day.

I just want to give a shot out to Scott who just accepted the Lord, that You just accepted the Lord and I just praise God for the wonderful way He has brought You before the throne of grace. Lord God I just thank You for Scott and for his willingness to…to accept You as Lord and Savior and I pray Lord that You would help him to grow and mature as he reads Your word and that he would keep his eyes focused on You and through all things and all things and because of all things. We just praise You Lord and thank You for Scott once again in Jesus’ name I pray. Way to go Scott. I’m so proud of You. This is Susan from Canada. Just praising God.

Hi this is Helen in Durham North Carolina I would like to share a personal lesson I received from today’s reading, a rebuke from a friend, from Jesus. In the passage in Luke about the 10 minas, the one servant buried his mina because he was afraid. He said you take what you did not deposit and reap what you did not sow. Well that hit me. I recalled elsewhere in Scripture we read that God makes a way in the wilderness, streams in the desert, He makes something out of nothing. As I heard Brian read this parable the Lord told me a woman who has named herself in the past as miss much afraid that I am guilty of often hiding what he’s given me to invest in the world. My testimony, what I know about Him, just speaking up because I’m simple afraid I’ll say it all wrong. I might be inept, but He can take what I do have and say and use it for His glory for his purposes and the other person’s lives. So, the sweet Lord spoke to me this morning, gave me a rebuke and also encouragement. I said thank you, I hear you and I’ve asked Him to sink this deep into my soul so that I can share whatever I have with others and let Him take care of the results. I’m praying for my two sons to find Jesus, one with emotional issues of anger depression and selfishness. He has a four-year-old son that is suffering from his dysfunction. Please pray. And the other is chasing the world of financial gain and sensuality. I love them both so much. Please pray. Thank you, Brian for being faithful for so many years to walk this calling of reading the Bible to us. God does speak through you.

Val from Vegas I’m so excited for you. Thank you for calling in and sharing your praise report on what’s happened with you. Like, what a quick turnaround. It seems like just a week ago when I heard you call in like super sick, destitute, ready to give up and look at you now. Beautiful. Thank you for sharing that with us and all of you out there that are feeling like that, hang in there. God’s got something for you.

Shabbat shalom, today is Saturday, April 18th and I had very good holy week and I pray that you had a holy week that was very special to you. During this time, I have been battling and trying to understand what am I supposed to do with this time. So, I do pray, and the Holy Spirit does help me pray for others and the Holy Spirit is sent out to help others in need just as I am in need. My name is Danielle I am in Maryland and at this time I do a little bit of checking myself to see what is it that I’m supposed to do, what do I need to do and I’m left but one thing at this time, I have an addiction. And, you know, I am honored by God that God had taken another addiction away from me and I’m praying for the Spirit of God to break and break and break the chains of addiction in my life and for others who have been struggling with addiction and to be set free, to be set free and to just enjoy each day without curdling back to what feels comfortable. I’m asking the Daily Audio Bible family to pray with me and to pray for others who have addictions…addictions and ask for those things be broken by the blood of Jesus. Thank you for your prayers and thank you for praying together and the family and by the campfire because God hears us, and God sees…

Joshua 21:1-22:20, Luke 20:1-26, Psalms 89:1-13, Proverbs 13:15-16

Today is the 20th day of April welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I’m Brian it’s great to be here with you today as we continue our journey through life and through the Scriptures together. And it’s a joy, as always to come around the Global Campfire and be together and know that we’re not alone and know that we’re stepping forward together. So, we’ve been reading from the Amplified Bible starting yesterday and that’s what we’ll read from you in the days ahead here and throughout…throughout this week. And today we’ll pick up where we left off yesterday. Joshua chapter 21 verse 1 through 22 verse 20.

Commentary:

Okay. So in the book of Joshua basically we remember being on the other side of the Jordan River and the two and a half tribes saying, “this is perfect for us, can we have this?” And ultimately, they were told, “if you’ll go with your brothers across the Jordan and help them win the land for themselves then yes you can.” And, so, that time has come and these two and a half tribes now who have been across the Jordan helping the other tribes settle the land have been given leave to go home. So, they are on their way and they’ve gone all the way back to the Jordan River and then erected an altar to God before crossing over the river. That seems to be patently against what Moses said to do. And, so…and the children of Israel have learned the lesson like, “yes if God goes before you who can stand against you but if God doesn’t how can you stand at all?” So, they’ve gotten together now because they’ve heard about this alter that’s been erected and they’re trying to figure out what to do because their brothers have just helped them kind of clear the land and settle and now they’re going back home, but it seems like they’re going back home in rebellion, which should cause the other tribes to rise up and go to war with them and like it’s looking like a bad situation. And we’ll have to wait until tomorrow to continue that story and see how things play out.

Then, in the New Testament we also kinda got a bad situation. I mean have…like we all probably know, like, what a mouse trap is, right? You set a mouse trap to get a mouse or whatever it is you trying to trap or catch or get rid of, whatever rodent, whatever. But have you ever stepped into a word trap, right? Something you’re supposed to step into because it’s supposed to get you to say something that maybe don’t even mean, but to trap you, to ensnare you so that it can be used against you. That is basically what it has happened to Jesus and the reason that it’s happened to Him is that He continues to call into the light what is in the darkness. And this is making the religious leaders, because He’s mostly focusing His attention on them because they are continually questioning Him. So, it creates a lot of tension. They’re asking Jesus, “who gave you the authority to do what you’re doing?” He knows what they’re trying to do so He asks them a question about John the Baptist, basically “was he from God or not?” An that is pulling into the light what is in the darkness. So, they have to get together and go like, “if we say he’s from heaven then Jesus is just gonna go like, ‘why don't…why didn’t and why do you not believe in him? Like why don’t you believe that God sent him?’” But if they were to say like, “you know, he was just from…he made all this up in his head” then they’re going to be in trouble with the people because the people believe fully that John was a prophet. So, all they can do is say, “I don’t know.” And, so, Jesus turns the whole thing back on them and is like, “then I don’t know. I’m not telling you who gives me the authority to do what I do.” He’s basically exposing that they’ll do the same thing to him that they’ve been doing to John. And he illustrates how this has been an ongoing systemic thing by using this parable of the vineyard owner. So, this person who owns a vineyard leases his land to tenant farmers and then goes away in at harvest he sends somebody to get his…his share, but they beat this person and send them away. And, so, the master then sends another servant to get his share and they beat that one too and send him away. And then he sends a third one and they do the same thing again. What Jesus is showing in this parable is the prophetic voices that God has sent all along to the people and how the religious leaders have ignored these things, that this is an ongoing thing. So then, in Jesus story the master sends his own son to be his representative to get what is deserving of the master because there is no higher representative. And they decide this is…this is the heir so let’s kill him, which they do in Jesus story. Then they realize He’s telling the parable about them. And, so, they’re just…they’re just trying to find a way to silence Jesus. Thus, the word traps. And, you know, if Jesus were to say something that was against the religious order or whatever, that could be called blasphemy, that could be called any number of things but that isn’t going to be able to get Jesus killed. Like that’s not good to be able to get him executed. The Romans don’t really care about that unless it’s causing unrest. To get Jesus actually in trouble He’s gonna have to do something against Rome, which is why they set this word trap - “Should we pay taxes”, basically. What we should notice is that Jesus, He…He kept His cool. Like He slowed things down enough to see what was actually going on and then responded appropriately. He wasn’t aggressive toward them or anything. He used wisdom to drag into the light what was in the darkness. He didn’t get into a debate, He didn’t get into a yelling match, there wasn’t arguing, there wasn’t a big fight. He…He just drug into the light what was in the dark and after that nobody had anything more to say about it. They just privately went and continued to plot against Jesus. And, so, let’s remember that. Let’s remember that posture. We have seen it over and over and over since the beginning of the year since we’ve been traveling with Jesus. We watch him calmly move into these situations. He’s not intimidated, which would be normal. He’s just there calling into the light what is in the dark. He’s not trying to prove anything. He’s certainly not trying to draw attention to Himself. Like we don’t have any examples of these exchanges where Jesus then, you know, leaves the situation and goes into a private place and self congratulates or gets His disciples together and says, “look at how awesome I was in that situation.” He’s just moving through life being light in the darkness.

Prayer:

Jesus, there is never a shortage of darkness but there’s no shortage of light either if we have eyes to see it. And this is what we’ve been focusing on, how we see things, our vision in this year. And, so, again, You know, we’ve seen this story before as we cross through this territory again, we are reminded. So, come Holy Spirit, help us to slow down and know that at every crossroad wisdom will be there and if we will walk in wisdom then we will walk in the light and that may disrupt the darkness, or even get the darkness to plot against us but what we’re seeing when we watch You is someone simply being completely true. And this drags into the light what is in the dark. So, in imitating You we’re gonna be walking that same path. So, our prayer today Lord is that You would come with Your light and expose what is dark within us, that we might first to deal with our own issues before…well…before trying to pull the speck out of somebody else’s eye, that we pull the beam out of our own. So, come, Holy Spirit, thank You for these words of correction today. Thank You for this example, once again of what the narrow path actually looks like. We invite Your Holy Spirit to cause us to meditate upon this today. We ask in Your holy name. Amen.

Announcements:

dailyaudiobible.com is home base and that’s the website, its where you find out what’s going on around here. So, all you need’s an Internet connection to get dialed in. And that’s the beauty of this community that we share. It doesn’t really matter where we are geographically in the world, we’re not separated. But…which is an interesting thing because that’s, you know, so much of the world is kind of in that circumstance right now, but it's….it’s amazing and beautiful that we can come around the Global Campfire and know that we’re not alone. We’re here with our brothers and sisters. No matter what time of day or night while listening, we’re here with our brothers and sisters. I mean, we can be listening to this in the middle of the night and simply become aware that brothers and sisters on…in a different part of the world are having breakfast and as we’re kind of in loneliness or isolation and kind of feeling the weight of the middle of the night upon us and all the thoughts that come in the night we can just become aware, it's…it’s morning somewhere else and I’m not alone. My brothers and sisters are here having their breakfast and getting ready for their day. It's…it’s…it’s really remarkable when you think about it. It…it…it awes me that we’re doing what we’re doing. So, I’m so grateful that we have a community and we have a place to come together in community and at primary place is around the Global Campfire at dailyaudiobible.com and there’s a Community section there with further ways to reach out and social media channels and there are resources there in the Shop, all that have been crafted over the years that aid in encouraging us on the journey that we’re on as we move through the Scriptures. So…so to check it all out and stay connected.

If you want to partner with the Daily Audio Bible you can do that at dailyaudiobible.com as well. There is a link on the homepage, and I thank you with all of my heart. The Global Campfire wouldn’t burn, it wouldn’t even exist if we weren’t in this together. And, so, so grateful that we are. So, there’s a link on the homepage. If you’re using the app you can press the Give button in the upper right-hand corner, or if you prefer, the mailing address is PO Box 1996 Spring Hill Tennessee 37174.

And, as always, if you have a prayer request or encouragement, you can hit the Hotline button in the app and share from there or you can dial 877-942-4253.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Hello family this is Dimitri from Portland Oregon calling back. Just wanted to thank you all for praying for me. Just wanted to give you an update. My wife and I are still struggling in our marriage. Like I said last time, she is ready to get divorced and move on with her life. And I know that’s not God’s will and I’ve been praying about it. I let it…I let God take over the entire situation and I received peace in my heart that now God is in control and I rely on Him to do the rest. So, I pray you guys that you guys can pray for me to continue with this, to continue being strong and for my wife to do the right decision. And pray for me guys. And it’s going to be alone hard road but I’ll…I’ll be thinking about you guys and I wanted to thank Brian for this amazing platform for always reading the Bible every day. It’s what’s keeping me alive in this struggle, keeping me alive the past five years that I’ve been listening this…to this platform and I thank you all again. Stay blessed and I’ll see you guys next time.

Hi everyone at the DAB family I’d like to ask everybody to please pray for me. For the last five months or more…I don’t know…I don’t even…I stopped counting I’ve been dealing with pain, but it hasn’t been physical pain. I’m not sick or anything. I’m not sick or anything. It’s just been emotional turmoil. It’s just been…I’ve just been in…in emotional turmoil and I’ve never felt like this before. It’s…it’s the most pain…emotional pain I’ve ever experienced before and I’ve been praying to God every day and I have been trying to be hopeful and I’ve been trying to be just seek God and trust in Him and believe in Him and know that it’ll eventually end, but I’m in so much pain every day and I can’t continue being in so much pain…

Hi this is Kim from recovery I just wanted to pray and lift up the lady on Friday that called in and said she just lost her dad. Let’s go to prayer. Jesus, I know in the word You say that You’re always close to the brokenhearted and You save those that are crushed in the spirit. Lord I just want to lift this lady that has lost her dad and kept from California. Lord just have her feel Your comfort, have her understand how close You are with this Lord. And sometimes that when we get in those moments that we feel so alone in that…that loss. Lord just have people come around her. Give her the peace that You…You give us so greatly Lord. Give her comfort, give her Your arms around her, surround her with Your love and thank You for Your willingness to take every part of this life with us Lord. And we just want to thank You and we pray that You’ll be with all the people that are going through this grief, that they know You are close. And we pray this in Jesus name.

Hi this is Andy from Birmingham I’d like to leave a prayer for Susie from Colorado who runs an orphanage for a child named Junior who called on the 17th of April. __ I prayed, and I could see this tear in her eye and remembered Psalm 56:8 says, “He collects tears and hurt.” So, my first prayer is that our Lord will be so close to Junior that he see this…see the compassion and I pray that he would not be consumed by what’s happened in his life. Lamentations 2:22 says, “because of His great love we’re not consumed for His compassions never fail.” And finally, Jeremiah 8:10 says, “don’t grieve for the joy of the Lord is your strength.” So, my final prayer will be that Junior would learn to draw his strength from God, not rely on his on strength. And I’ll keep praying for Junior. God bless you.

Hello DAB family this is Greg and Beketa from Sweden. On behalf of both myself and my wife Begeta this is to say a big thank you for your prayers which sustained us during our move to our new country. My wife, she is Swedish. We had heard Jesus days before moving assuring us before everything will be fine. He prompted me to put our flight forward when we realized that we could still be in the UK because of lockdown. On the day we moved standing in line and just about to board our flight an official came up to us informing each British person that only Swedes their immediate families and medical personnel will be allowed to fly. I was informed that I could not fly but my wife was allowed to go. All our belongings had been advanced to Sweden ahead of us. The Lord’s necessary reassurance enabled us to not to give up upon receiving this downer. It took the airport several calls to Sweden and us producing evidence of a tenancy agreement before we both were fortunately allowed on board. So, we thank Jesus that we’re now in Sweden. We ask him to detail His plans for us going forward. I now need to quickly learn Swedish and start earning since my wife is caring for her elderly health challenged mother full-time. We do thank you for and we appreciate your prayers. Our abundant Christ can assure that no prayer goes or went unanswered by the Lord. Thank you, Father in Jesus’ precious name. May we blessedly and joyfully hear and obey you when you speak, after all we’ve just been answered by our creator the God of heaven. We’re really grateful to Jesus and everyone here at Daily Audio Bible. Goodbye for now and thank you. Greg from South Sweden.

Hey Daily Audio family this is Becky in Orlando. I just wanted to call and let you know that I just listened to today’s podcast, it the 17th of April and my heart goes out to the mom whose daughter wrote the letter about how…what it was like…how the gentleman with COVID-19 died under her hands as she was giving him compressions. I feel so sad for you and for your family and all the doctors and the nurses and for all the family members that have lost somebody due to cCOVID-19. And, so, I am glad that you shared that with us and the importance of social distancing and those poor young girls who are not going to get to see their father again. So, my heart goes out to everyone in…in the world who is dealing with this. And thank you so much Daniel from Singapore for calling us and letting us know how you’re doing. I do remember praying for you and for everybody in Singapore. And at that time, I did not ever expect it was gonna be like this in the United States. So, I’m just gonna continue praying for our world and I love all of you so much. So, thank you. Thank you for being my family and being there for me every day. Thank you, Brian for reading the Daily Audio Bible. So, alright guys. I love you. Bye.
