Nehemiah 12:27-13:31

The Wall of Jerusalem

27 When the wall of Jerusalem was ·offered as a gift to God [L dedicated], they asked the Levites to come from wherever they lived to Jerusalem to celebrate with joy the ·gift of the wall [L dedication]. They were to celebrate with ·songs [hymns] of thanksgiving and with the music of cymbals, harps, and lyres. 28 They also brought together ·singers [L sons of singers] from all around Jerusalem, from the Netophathite ·villages [settlements], 29 from Beth Gilgal, and from the areas of Geba and Azmaveth. The singers had built ·villages [settlements] for themselves around Jerusalem. 30 The priests and Levites made themselves pure, and they also made the people, the gates, and the wall of Jerusalem pure.

31 I had the leaders of Judah go up on top of the wall, and I appointed two large ·choruses [choirs] to give thanks. One ·chorus [choir] went to the right on top of the wall, toward the ·Trash [Garbage; Refuse; T Dung] Gate. 32 Behind them went Hoshaiah and half the leaders of Judah. 33 Azariah, Ezra, Meshullam, 34 Judah, Benjamin, Shemaiah, and Jeremiah also went. 35 Some ·priests [L sons of priests] with trumpets also went, along with Zechariah son of Jonathan. (Jonathan was the son of Shemaiah, the son of Mattaniah. Mattaniah was the son of Micaiah, the son of Zaccur. Zaccur was the son of Asaph.) 36 Zechariah’s ·relatives [colleagues; kinsmen; L brothers] also went. They were Shemaiah, Azarel, Milalai, Gilalai, Maai, Nethanel, Judah, and Hanani. These men played the musical instruments of David, the man of God, and Ezra the ·teacher [scribe] ·walked in front of [led] them. 37 They went from the Fountain Gate straight up the steps ·to the highest part of the wall by the older part of the city [L of the City of David]. They ·went on [passed] above the ·house [palace] of David to the Water Gate on the east.

38 The second ·chorus [choir] ·went to the left [proceeded in the opposite direction], while I followed them on top of the wall with half the people. We went from the Tower of the ·Ovens [Furnaces; Firepots] to the Broad Wall, 39 ·over [above] the Gate of Ephraim to the ·Old [L Jeshanah] Gate and the Fish Gate, to the Tower of Hananel and the Tower of the Hundred. We went as far as the Sheep Gate and ·stopped [L stood] at the Gate of the Guard.

40 The two ·choruses [choirs] ·took their places [L stood] at the ·Temple [L house] of God. Half of the ·leaders [officials] and I did also. 41 These priests were there with their trumpets: Eliakim, Maaseiah, Miniamin, Micaiah, Elioenai, Zechariah, and Hananiah. 42 These people were also there: Maaseiah, Shemaiah, Eleazar, Uzzi, Jehohanan, Malkijah, Elam, and Ezer. The ·choruses [choirs] sang loudly, ·led [directed] by Jezrahiah. 43 The people offered ·many [great] sacrifices that day and ·were happy [rejoiced] because God had given them great joy. The women and children ·were happy [rejoiced]. The ·sound of happiness in [joy of; rejoicing in] Jerusalem could be heard far away.

44 At that time men were appointed to be in charge of the storerooms. These rooms were for the ·gifts [contributions; offerings], the firstfruits [C of the harvest], and the ·ten percent that the people brought [tithes]. The ·Teachings [Laws; Instructions; L Torah] said they should bring a share for the priests and Levites from the fields around the towns. The people of Judah were ·happy [delighted] to do this for the priests and Levites who ·served [L stood]. 45 They performed the service of their God ·in making things pure [or and the service of purification]. The singers and gatekeepers also did their jobs, as David had commanded [or and] his son Solomon. 46 ·Earlier [Long ago], in the ·time [days] of David and Asaph, there was a ·leader [head; director] of the singers and of the songs of praise and [L hymns of] thanksgiving to God. 47 So it was in the days of Zerubbabel and Nehemiah. All the people of Israel gave ·something [the daily portions] to the singers and gatekeepers, and they also ·set aside [dedicated] part for the Levites. Then the Levites ·set aside [dedicated] part for the ·descendants [sons] of Aaron.

Foreign People Are Sent Away

13 On that day they read aloud the ·Book [scroll] of Moses ·to [L in the ears/hearing of] the people, and they found that it said no Ammonite or Moabite should ever ·be allowed in the meeting to worship [enter the assembly of God; Deut. 23:3–6; C Tobiah’s ancestry, v. 4, was Ammonite; 2:10]. The Ammonites and Moabites had not ·welcomed [L met] the Israelites with ·food [L bread] and water. Instead, they had hired Balaam to put a curse on Israel [Num. 22–24]. (But our God turned the curse into a blessing.) When the people heard this ·teaching [law; instruction; L Torah], they ·separated [excluded; removed] all foreigners [C including people of mixed ancestry] from Israel.

Nehemiah Returns to Jerusalem

Before that happened, Eliashib the priest, who was ·in charge of [appointed over] the ·Temple [L house] storerooms, was ·friendly with [or a relative of] Tobiah. Eliashib let Tobiah use one of the large storerooms. Earlier it had been used for ·grain [L gift; tribute] offerings [Lev. 2:3], incense, the ·utensils [vessels], and the ·tenth offerings [tithes] of grain, new wine, and olive oil ·that belonged to [commanded/prescribed for] the Levites, singers, and gatekeepers. It had also been used for ·gifts [contributions; offerings] for the priests.

I was not in Jerusalem ·when this happened [at that time]. I had gone back to Artaxerxes king of Babylon in the thirty-second year he was king [C 433 bc]. ·Finally [Later; After some time] I asked the king to let me leave. When I returned to Jerusalem, I found out the evil Eliashib had done by letting Tobiah have a room in the ·Temple [L house] courtyard. I was very ·upset [displeased; angry] at this, so I threw all of Tobiah’s ·goods [belongings; possessions] out of the room. I ordered the rooms to be ·purified [cleansed; C ritually], and I brought back the ·utensils [vessels] for God’s ·Temple [L house], the ·grain [L gift; tribute] offerings [Lev. 2:3], and the incense.

10 Then I found out the people were not giving the Levites their ·shares [portions]. So the Levites and singers who served had gone back to their ·own farms [fields]. 11 I ·argued with [reprimanded; confronted] the officers, saying, “Why ·haven’t you taken care of [have you neglected/abandoned/forsaken] the ·Temple [L house] of God?” Then I ·gathered [assembled] the Levites and singers and ·put them back at [restored them to] their ·places [posts; stations].

12 All the people of Judah then brought to the storerooms a ·tenth [tithe] of their ·crops [grain], new wine, and olive oil. 13 I ·put [appointed] these men ·in charge of [over] the storerooms: Shelemiah the priest, Zadok the ·teacher [scribe], and Pedaiah a Levite. I made Hanan son of Zaccur, the son of Mattaniah, their helper. Everyone knew they were ·honest [reliable; trustworthy]. ·They gave out the portions that went [Their job/responsibility was to distribute] to their ·relatives [colleagues; kinsmen; L brothers].

14 Remember me, my God, for this. Do not ·ignore [forget; wipe/blot out] my ·love [loyal/faithful deeds] for the ·Temple [L house] of my God and its services.

15 In those days I saw people in Judah ·working in the [L treading] winepresses on the Sabbath day. They were bringing in grain and loading it on donkeys. And they were bringing loads of wine, grapes, and figs and other things into Jerusalem on the Sabbath day. So I ·warned [admonished; rebuked] them about selling food on that day. 16 People from the city of Tyre who were living in Jerusalem ·brought in [imported] fish and other ·things [merchandise] and sold them there on the Sabbath day to the people of Judah—in Jerusalem itself! 17 I ·argued with [reprimanded; confronted] the ·important men [nobles] of Judah and said to them, “What is this evil thing you are doing? You are ·ruining [desecrating; profaning] the Sabbath day [Ex. 20:8–11; 31:12–17; Deut. 5:8–10]. 18 ·This is [L Isn’t this…?] just what your ·ancestors [fathers] did. So our God ·did terrible things to us and [brought on us all this trouble/calamity and on] this city. Now you are ·making him even more angry at [bringing even more wrath on] Israel by ·ruining [desecrating; profaning] the Sabbath day.”

19 So I ordered that the ·doors [L gates of Jerusalem] be shut at ·sunset [L dark] before the Sabbath and not be opened until the Sabbath was over. I ·put [L stood] my servants at the gates so no load could come in on the Sabbath. 20 Once or twice traders and ·sellers [merchants] of all kinds of ·goods [merchandise] spent the night outside Jerusalem. 21 So I ·warned [admonished; rebuked] them, “Why are you spending the night ·by [in front of] the wall? If you do it again, I will ·force you away [arrest/forcibly remove you; L send a hand on you].” After that, they did not come back on the Sabbath. 22 Then I ordered the Levites to purify themselves and to guard the city gates to make sure the Sabbath remained holy.

Remember me, my God, for this. Have ·mercy [compassion] on me because of your ·great [great and steadfast/unfailing] love.

23 In those days I saw men of Judah who had married women from Ashdod, Ammon, and Moab. 24 Half their children were speaking the language of Ashdod or some other place, and they couldn’t speak the language of Judah. 25 I ·argued with [reprimanded; confronted] those people, put curses on them, ·hit [beat] some of them, and pulled out their hair. I ·forced them to make a promise [made them vow/swear/take an oath] to God, saying, “Do not ·let your daughters marry the sons of foreigners [give your daughters to their sons], and do not take ·the daughters of foreigners as wives [their daughters] for your sons or yourselves. 26 ·Foreign women [L Was it not things like this that…?] made King Solomon of Israel sin. There was never a king like him in any of the nations. God loved Solomon and made him king over all Israel, but foreign ·women [wives] made even him sin [1 Kin. 11:1–13]. 27 And now ·you are not obedient when [L must we hear how…?] you do this evil thing. You are unfaithful to our God when you ·marry [L give a dwelling to] foreign ·wives [women].”

28 Joiada was the son of Eliashib the high priest. One of Joiada’s sons married a daughter of Sanballat the Horonite, so I ·sent [drove; banished] him away from ·me [my sight].

29 Remember them, my God, because they ·made the priesthood unclean [defiled the priesthood] and the ·agreement [covenant; treaty] of the priests and Levites.

30 So I ·purified [purged; cleansed] them of everything that was foreign. I ·appointed [assigned] duties for the priests and Levites, giving each man his own ·job [tasks; work; duties]. 31 I also ·made sure wood was brought for the altar [provided for the wood offering] at ·regular [designated; proper] times and that the firstfruits [C of the harvest] were brought.

Remember me, my God; ·be kind to me [for good; with favor].

1 Corinthians 11:1-16

11 ·Follow my example [Imitate me], as I ·follow the example of [imitate] Christ.

Being Under Authority

I praise you because you ·remember me in everything [are always thinking of me], and you follow closely the ·teachings [traditions] just as I ·gave them [passed them on] to you. But I want you to understand this: The head of every man is Christ, the head of a woman is ·the man [or her husband], and the head of Christ is God. Every man who prays or prophesies ·with his head covered [or with long hair; L having down the head; C most scholars think the passage concerns head coverings; others long or short hair (see v. 14)] brings shame to his head [C meaning shame to Christ, who is the head of the man; v. 3]. But every woman who prays or prophesies with ·her head uncovered [or no covering (of hair); v. 4] brings shame to her head. She is the same as a woman who has her head shaved. If a woman does not cover her head, she should have her hair cut off. But since it is shameful for a woman to cut off her hair or to shave her head, she should cover her head. But a man should not cover his head, because he is the likeness and glory of God. But woman is man’s glory [C God’s glory should be unveiled (revealed), while human glory should be veiled]. [L For] Man did not come from woman, but woman came from man. And man was not made for woman, but woman was made for man [Gen. 2:18]. 10 So that is why a woman should have a ·symbol of authority on [or authority over] her head, because of the angels [C the significance of the angels is unclear; perhaps their presence at worship calls for reverence and propriety].

11 But in the Lord women are not independent of men, and men are not independent of women. 12 This is true because woman came from man, but also man is born from woman. But everything comes from God. 13 ·Decide [Judge] this for yourselves: Is it ·right [fitting; proper] for a woman to pray to God with her head uncovered? 14 ·Even [L Does not…?] ·nature [or custom; culture] itself teaches you that wearing long hair is shameful for a man [C Greco-Roman men normally wore their hair short]. 15 But long hair is a woman’s glory. Long hair is given to her as a covering. 16 ·Some people [L If anyone] may still want to argue about this, but I would add that neither we nor the churches of God have any other ·practice [custom].

Psalm 35:1-16

A Prayer for Help

Of David.

35 Lord, ·battle with [contend with; accuse; bring a charge against] those who ·battle with [contend with; accuse; bring a charge against] me.
Fight against those who fight against me.
Pick up the ·shield and armor [L small shield and large shield].
Rise up and help me.
Lift up your ·spears [javelins], both large and small,
against those who ·chase [pursue] me.
Tell ·me [L my soul], “I ·will save you [am your salvation/victory].”

Make those who ·want to kill me [L seek my life/soul]
be ashamed and ·disgraced [humiliated].
Make those who ·plan to harm me [plot evil against me]
turn back and ·run away [be dismayed].
Make them like chaff [C the worthless leftovers from threshing grain] blown by the wind
as the angel of the Lord ·forces [drives] them away.
Let their road be dark and slippery
as the angel of the Lord chases them.
For no reason they ·spread out [L hid] their ·net [L pit] to trap me;
for no reason they dug a pit for me.
So let ruin strike them ·suddenly [or without their awareness].
Let them be caught in their own nets;
let them fall into the pit and ·die [be ruined].
Then ·I [my soul] will rejoice in the Lord;
I will be happy when he ·saves me [provides victory for me].
10 Even my bones will say,
Lord, who is like you?
You ·save [rescue; T deliver] the ·weak [afflicted; or poor] from the strong,
the ·weak [afflicted; or poor] and poor from robbers.”

11 ·Men without mercy stand up to testify [L Violent witnesses rise up].
They ask me things I do not know.
12 They repay me with evil for the good I have done,
and ·they make me very sad [my soul is bereaved].
13 Yet when they were sick, I put on ·clothes of sadness [sackcloth; burlap]
and showed my sorrow by fasting.
But my prayers ·were not answered [L turned back on my bosom].
14 I acted as if they were my ·friends [or neighbors] or brothers.
I ·bowed in sadness as if I were crying [went around as if mourning] for my mother.
15 But when I ·was in trouble [stumbled], they gathered and laughed;
they gathered to attack before I knew it.
They ·insulted [tore at] me without stopping.
16 They made fun of me and were cruel to me
and ·ground [gnashed] their teeth at me in anger.

Proverbs 21:17-18

17 Whoever loves pleasure will become poor;
whoever loves wine and ·perfume [oil] will never be rich.

18 Wicked people ·will suffer instead of [L are a ransom for] ·good [righteous] people,
and ·those who cannot be trusted [the unfaithful] will suffer instead of those ·who do right [with integrity/virtue].

Nehemiah 11:1-12:26

New People Move into Jerusalem

11 The leaders of Israel ·lived [settled] in Jerusalem. The rest of the people ·threw [cast] lots to choose one person out of every ten to come and live in Jerusalem, the holy city. The other nine could stay in their own cities. The people ·blessed [praised; commended] those who volunteered to live in Jerusalem [C at this point in the rebuilding, Jerusalem was dangerous and perhaps uncomfortable].

These are the ·area [provincial] ·leaders [officials] who lived in Jerusalem. (·Some [Other; Most] people lived on their own ·land [property] in the cities of Judah. These included Israelites, priests, Levites, Temple servants, and ·descendants [sons] of Solomon’s servants. Others from the ·families [sons] of Judah and Benjamin lived in Jerusalem.)

These are the ·descendants [sons] of Judah who ·moved into [settled in] Jerusalem. There was Athaiah son of Uzziah. (Uzziah was the son of Zechariah, the son of Amariah. Amariah was the son of Shephatiah, the son of Mahalalel. Mahalalel was a ·descendant [son] of Perez.) There was also Maaseiah son of Baruch. (Baruch was the son of Col-Hozeh, the son of Hazaiah. Hazaiah was the son of Adaiah, the son of Joiarib. Joiarib was the son of Zechariah, a ·descendant [son] of Shelah.) All the ·descendants [sons] of Perez who ·lived [settled] in Jerusalem totaled 468 men. They were ·soldiers [capable/outstanding/exceptional men].

These are ·descendants [sons] of Benjamin who ·moved into [settled in] Jerusalem. There was Sallu son of Meshullam. (Meshullam was the son of Joed, the son of Pedaiah. Pedaiah was the son of Kolaiah, the son of Maaseiah. Maaseiah was the son of Ithiel, the son of Jeshaiah.) ·Following him [or His brothers] were Gabbai and Sallai, for a total of 928 men. Joel son of Zicri was ·appointed over them [their chief/supervisor], and Judah son of Hassenuah was second in ·charge [command] of the ·new area of the city [L city].

10 These are the priests who moved into Jerusalem. There was Jedaiah son of Joiarib, Jakin, 11 and Seraiah son of Hilkiah, the ·supervisor [leader] in the ·Temple [L house] of God. (Hilkiah was the son of Meshullam, the son of Zadok. Zadok was the son of Meraioth, the son of Ahitub.) 12 And there were ·others [colleagues; L brothers] with them who ·did [performed] the work for the ·Temple [L house]. All together there were 822 men. Also there was Adaiah son of Jeroham. (Jeroham was the son of Pelaliah, the son of Amzi. Amzi was the son of Zechariah, the son of Pashhur. Pashhur was the son of Malkijah.) 13 And there were family heads with him. All together there were 242 men. Also there was Amashsai son of Azarel. (Azarel was the son of Ahzai, the son of Meshillemoth. Meshillemoth was the son of Immer.) 14 And there were ·brave [capable; outstanding; exceptional] men with Amashsai. All together there were 128 men. Zabdiel son of Haggedolim was ·appointed over them [their chief/supervisor].

15 These are the Levites who moved into Jerusalem. There was Shemaiah son of Hasshub. (Hasshub was the son of Azrikam, the son of Hashabiah. Hashabiah was the son of Bunni.) 16 And there were Shabbethai and Jozabad, two of the leaders of the Levites who were in charge of the work outside the ·Temple [L house] of God. 17 There was Mattaniah son of Mica. (Mica was the son of Zabdi, the son of Asaph.) Mattaniah was the ·director who led the people [leader] in thanksgiving and prayer. There was Bakbukiah, who was second in charge over his ·fellow Levites [colleagues; L brothers]. And there was Abda son of Shammua. (Shammua was the son of Galal, the son of Jeduthun.) 18 All together 284 Levites lived in the holy city.

19 The gatekeepers who moved into Jerusalem were Akkub, Talmon, and others with them. There was a total of 172 men who ·guarded [kept watch at] the city gates.

20 The other Israelites, priests, and Levites lived on their own ·land [property] in all the cities of Judah.

21 The Temple servants lived on the hill of Ophel, and Ziha and Gishpa ·were in charge of [supervised] them.

22 Uzzi son of Bani was ·appointed over [chief officer/supervisor of] the Levites in Jerusalem. (Bani was the son of Hashabiah, the son of Mattaniah. Mattaniah was the son of Mica.) Uzzi was one of Asaph’s ·descendants [sons], who were the singers responsible for the service of the ·Temple [L house] of God. 23 The singers were under the king’s ·orders [commandment], which regulated them day by day.

24 Pethahiah son of Meshezabel was the king’s ·spokesman [representative; adviser] in all matters concerning the people. (Meshezabel was a descendant of Zerah, the son of Judah.)

25 Some of the people of Judah lived in ·villages [settlements] with their surrounding fields. They lived in Kiriath Arba and its ·surroundings [towns], in Dibon and its ·surroundings [towns], in Jekabzeel and its ·surroundings [settlements], 26 in Jeshua, Moladah, Beth Pelet, 27 Hazar Shual, Beersheba and its ·surroundings [towns], 28 in Ziklag and Meconah and its ·surroundings [towns], 29 in En Rimmon, Zorah, Jarmuth, 30 Zanoah, Adullam and their ·villages [settlements], in Lachish and the fields around it, and in Azekah and its ·surroundings [towns]. So they ·settled [lived; L camped] from Beersheba all the way to the Valley of Hinnom.

31 The ·descendants [sons] of the Benjaminites from Geba lived in Micmash, Aija, Bethel and its ·surroundings [towns], 32 in Anathoth, Nob, Ananiah, 33 Hazor, Ramah, Gittaim, 34 Hadid, Zeboim, Neballat, 35 Lod, Ono, and in the ·Valley of the Craftsmen [Ge-harashim].

36 Some groups of the Levites from Judah settled in the land of Benjamin.

Priests and Levites

12 These are the priests and Levites who ·returned [L went up] with Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel and with Jeshua [Ezra 1—2]. The Levites were Jeshua, Binnui, Kadmiel, Sherebiah, Judah, and Mattaniah. Mattaniah and his ·relatives [colleagues; kinsmen; L brothers] were in charge of the songs of thanksgiving. Bakbukiah and Unni, their ·relatives [colleagues; kinsmen; L brothers], stood ·across from [opposite; L as an antiphonal choir; v. 24] them in the services.

10 Jeshua was the father of Joiakim. Joiakim was the father of Eliashib. Eliashib was the father of Joiada. 11 Joiada was the father of Jonathan, and Jonathan was the father of Jaddua.

22 The ·leaders [heads] of the families of the Levites and the priests were written down in the days of Eliashib, Joiada, Johanan, and Jaddua, while Darius the Persian was king. 23 The family ·leaders [heads] among the Levites were written down in the ·history book [Book/Scroll of the Chronicles/Annals/History] up to the time of Johanan son of Eliashib. 24 The ·leaders [heads] of the Levites were Hashabiah, Sherebiah, Jeshua son of Kadmiel, and their ·relatives [colleagues; kinsmen; L brothers]. Their ·relatives [colleagues; kinsmen; L brothers] stood ·across from [opposite] them and ·gave [offered] praise and thanksgiving. One group ·answered the [responded to the; C antiphonally] other group, as David, the man of God, had ·commanded [prescribed].

25 These were the gatekeepers who ·guarded [kept watch at] the storerooms next to the gates: Mattaniah, Bakbukiah, Obadiah, Meshullam, Talmon, and Akkub. 26 They served in the days of Joiakim son of Jeshua, the son of Jozadak. They also served in the days of Nehemiah the governor and Ezra the priest and ·teacher [scribe].

1 Corinthians 10:14-33

14 So, my ·dear friends [beloved], ·run away from [flee; stay away from] the worship of idols. 15 I am speaking to you as to ·reasonable [sensible; discerning] people; ·judge [consider] for yourselves what I say. 16 We give thanks for the cup of blessing [C used in the Lord’s Supper], ·which is [L is this not…?] a ·sharing [participation; fellowship] in the blood of Christ. And the bread that we break ·is [L is it not…?] a ·sharing [participation; fellowship] in the body of Christ. 17 Because there is one loaf of bread, we who are many are one body, because we all share that one loaf.

18 Think about ·the Israelites [L Israel according to the flesh]: Do not those who eat the sacrifices ·share [participate] in the altar [C by eating the sacrificial food, priests in the Jerusalem temple participate in the worship of God]? 19 ·I do not mean [L What, then, am I saying…?] that the food sacrificed to an idol is important or that an idol is anything at all. 20 But I say that what is sacrificed to idols is offered to demons, not to God. And I do not want you to ·share anything [be participants; share fellowship] with demons. 21 You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons also. You cannot ·share in [partake of] the Lord’s table and the table of demons. 22 Are we trying to make the Lord jealous? We are not stronger than he is, are we?

How to Use Christian Freedom

23 “·We are allowed to do all things [L All things are lawful/permissible],” but not all things are ·good for us to do [profitable; beneficial]. “·We are allowed to do all things [L All things are lawful/permissible],” but not all things ·help others grow stronger [L build up; C the quotations were probably slogans the Corinthians used; 6:12, 13; 7:1; 8:1, 4]. 24 Do not look out only for yourselves. Look out for the good of others.

25 Eat any meat that is sold in the meat market. Do not ask questions ·about it [L for conscience’s sake]. 26 You may eat it, “because the earth belongs to the Lord, and ·everything in it [its fullness/abundance/bounty; Ps. 24:1; 50:12; 89:11].”

27 Those who are not believers may invite you to eat with them. If you want to go, eat anything that is put before you. Do not ask questions ·about it [L for conscience’s sake]. 28 But if anyone says to you, “That food was offered to idols,” do not eat it. Do not eat it because of that person who told you and ·because eating it might be thought to be wrong [L for conscience’s sake]. 29 I don’t mean ·you think it is wrong [your conscience], but the ·other person might [the concience of the other person]. ·But why, you ask, [or For why] should my freedom be judged by someone else’s conscience? 30 If I eat the meal with thankfulness, why am I criticized because of something for which I thank God?

31 ·The answer is [or Therefore; In summary], if you eat or drink, or if you do anything, do it all for the glory of God. 32 Never do anything that might hurt others—Jews, Greeks, or God’s church— 33 just as I, also, try to please everybody in every way. I am not trying to do what is ·good [advantageous] for me but what is ·good [advantageous] for most people so they can be saved.

Psalm 34:11-22

11 Children, come and listen to me.
I will teach you ·to worship [L the fear of] the Lord.
12 ·You must do these things
to enjoy life and have many happy days [L Who of you takes pleasure in life and loves days to experience good?].
13 You must ·not say evil things [L guard/keep your tongue from evil],
and ·you must not tell lies [L your lips from deception].
14 ·Stop doing [L Turn aside from] evil and do good.
·Look for [Seek] peace and ·work for [pursue] it.

15 ·The Lord sees the [L The eyes of the Lord are on] ·good [righteous] people
and ·listens to their prayers [L his ears attend to their cries for help].
16 But the ·Lord is [L face of the Lord is] against those who do evil;
he ·makes the world forget them [L cuts memory of them off the earth].
17 ·The Lord hears good people when they [L They] cry out to him,
and he saves them from all their ·troubles [distress].
18 The Lord is close to the brokenhearted,
and he saves those whose spirits have been crushed.

19 People who ·do what is right may [are righteous] have many ·problems [afflictions],
but the Lord ·will solve them [L saves them from them] all.
20 He will protect their very bones;
not one of them will be broken.
21 Evil will kill the wicked;
those who hate ·good [righteous] people will be judged guilty.
22 But the Lord ·saves [redeems; ransoms] his servants’ lives;
no one who ·trusts [finds refuge in] him will be judged guilty.

15 When justice is done, ·good [righteous] people are happy,

Nehemiah 9:22-10:39

22 “And you gave them kingdoms and peoples and allotted to them every corner. (A)So they took possession of the land of Sihon king of Heshbon (B)and the land of Og king of Bashan. 23 You multiplied their children (C)as the stars of heaven, and you brought them into the land that you had told their fathers to enter and possess. 24 (D)So the descendants went in and possessed the land, (E)and you subdued before them the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites, and gave them into their hand, with their kings and the peoples of the land, that they might do with them as they would. 25 And they captured (F)fortified cities and (G)a rich land, and took possession of (H)houses full of all good things, cisterns already hewn, vineyards, olive orchards and fruit trees in abundance. So they ate and were filled (I)and became fat and delighted themselves in (J)your great goodness.

26 (K)“Nevertheless, they were disobedient and rebelled against you (L)and cast your law behind their back (M)and killed your prophets, who (N)had warned them in order to turn them back to you, (O)and they committed great blasphemies. 27 (P)Therefore you gave them into the hand of their enemies, who made them suffer. (Q)And in the time of their suffering they cried out to you and you heard them from heaven, and according to your great mercies you gave them (R)saviors who saved them from the hand of their enemies. 28 (S)But after they had rest they did evil again before you, and you abandoned them to the hand of their enemies, so that they had dominion over them. Yet when they turned and cried to you, you heard from heaven, (T)and many times you delivered them according to your mercies. 29 (U)And you warned them in order to turn them back to your law. Yet (V)they acted presumptuously and did not obey your commandments, but sinned against your rules, (W)which if a person does them, he shall live by them, (X)and they turned a stubborn shoulder (Y)and stiffened their neck and would not obey. 30 Many years (Z)you bore with them (AA)and warned them (AB)by your Spirit through your prophets. (AC)Yet they would not give ear. (AD)Therefore you gave them into the hand of the peoples of the lands. 31 Nevertheless, (AE)in your great mercies (AF)you did not make an end of them or forsake them, (AG)for you are a gracious and merciful God.

32 “Now, therefore, our God, (AH)the great, the mighty, and the awesome God, who keeps covenant and steadfast love, let not all the hardship seem little to you that has come upon us, upon our kings, our princes, our priests, our prophets, our fathers, and all your people, (AI)since the time of the kings of Assyria until this day. 33 (AJ)Yet you have been righteous in all that has come upon us, for you have dealt faithfully (AK)and we have acted wickedly. 34 Our kings, our princes, our priests, and our fathers have not kept your law or paid attention to your commandments and your warnings that you gave them. 35 Even in their own kingdom, (AL)and amid your great goodness that you gave them, and in the large and (AM)rich land that you set before them, (AN)they did not serve you or turn from their wicked works. 36 Behold, (AO)we are slaves this day; in the land that you gave to our fathers to enjoy its fruit and its good gifts, behold, we are slaves. 37 (AP)And its rich yield goes to the kings whom you have set over us because of our sins. They rule over our bodies and over our livestock as they please, and we are in great distress.

38 [a] “Because of all this (AQ)we make a firm covenant in writing; on (AR)the sealed document are the names of[b] our princes, our Levites, and our priests.

The People Who Sealed the Covenant

10 [c] (AS)“On the seals are the names of[d] Nehemiah (AT)the governor, (AU)the son of Hacaliah, Zedekiah, (AV)Seraiah, Azariah, Jeremiah, Pashhur, Amariah, Malchijah, (AW)Hattush, Shebaniah, Malluch, Harim, Meremoth, Obadiah, Daniel, Ginnethon, Baruch, Meshullam, Abijah, Mijamin, Maaziah, Bilgai, Shemaiah; these are the priests. And the Levites: (AX)Jeshua the son of Azaniah, Binnui of the sons of (AY)Henadad, Kadmiel; 10 and their brothers, Shebaniah, Hodiah, Kelita, Pelaiah, Hanan, 11 Mica, Rehob, Hashabiah, 12 Zaccur, Sherebiah, Shebaniah, 13 Hodiah, Bani, Beninu. 14 The chiefs of the people: (AZ)Parosh, Pahath-moab, Elam, Zattu, Bani, 15 Bunni, Azgad, Bebai, 16 Adonijah, Bigvai, Adin, 17 Ater, Hezekiah, Azzur, 18 Hodiah, Hashum, Bezai, 19 Hariph, Anathoth, Nebai, 20 Magpiash, Meshullam, Hezir, 21 Meshezabel, Zadok, Jaddua, 22 Pelatiah, Hanan, Anaiah, 23 Hoshea, Hananiah, Hasshub, 24 Hallohesh, Pilha, Shobek, 25 Rehum, Hashabnah, Maaseiah, 26 Ahiah, Hanan, Anan, 27 Malluch, Harim, Baanah.

The Obligations of the Covenant

28 (BA)“The rest of the people, the priests, the Levites, the gatekeepers, the singers, the temple servants, (BB)and all who have separated themselves from the peoples of the lands to the Law of God, their wives, their sons, their daughters, all who have knowledge and understanding, 29 join with their brothers, their nobles, (BC)and enter into a curse and an oath (BD)to walk in God's Law that was given by Moses the servant of God, and to observe and do all the commandments of the Lord our Lord and his rules and his statutes. 30 (BE)We will not give our daughters to the peoples of the land or take their daughters for our sons. 31 (BF)And if the peoples of the land bring in goods or any grain on the Sabbath day to sell, we will not buy from them on the Sabbath or on a holy day. And we will forego the crops of the (BG)seventh year and the (BH)exaction of every debt.

32 “We also take on ourselves the obligation to give yearly (BI)a third part of a shekel[e] for the service of the house of our God: 33 (BJ)for the showbread, (BK)the regular grain offering, (BL)the regular burnt offering, the Sabbaths, the new moons, the appointed feasts, the holy things, and the sin offerings to make atonement for Israel, and for all the work of the house of our God. 34 (BM)We, the priests, the Levites, and the people, have likewise cast lots (BN)for the wood offering, to bring it into the house of our God, according to our fathers' houses, at times appointed, year by year, to burn on the altar of the Lord our God, (BO)as it is written in the Law. 35 We obligate ourselves (BP)to bring the firstfruits of our ground and the firstfruits of all fruit of every tree, year by year, to the house of the Lord; 36 also to bring to the house of our God, to the priests who minister in the house of our God, the firstborn of our sons and of our cattle, (BQ)as it is written in the Law, and the firstborn of our herds and of our flocks; 37 (BR)and to bring the first of our dough, and our contributions, the fruit of every tree, the wine and the oil, to the priests, (BS)to the chambers of the house of our God; and to bring to the Levites the tithes from our ground, for it is the Levites who collect the tithes in all our towns where we labor. 38 And the priest, the son of Aaron, shall be with the Levites when the Levites receive the tithes. And the Levites shall bring up the tithe of the tithes to the house of our God, to the chambers of (BT)the storehouse. 39 For the people of Israel and the sons of Levi (BU)shall bring the contribution of grain, wine, and oil to the chambers, where the vessels of the sanctuary are, as well as the priests who minister, and the gatekeepers and the singers. (BV)We will not neglect the house of our God.”

1 Corinthians 9:19-10:13

19 For (A)though I am free from all, (B)I have made myself a servant to all, that I might (C)win more of them. 20 (D)To the Jews I became as a Jew, in order to win Jews. To those under the law I became as one under the law (though not being myself under the law) that I might win those under the law. 21 To (E)those outside the law I became (F)as one outside the law (not being outside the law of God but (G)under the law of Christ) that I might win those outside the law. 22 (H)To the weak I became weak, that I might win the weak. (I)I have become all things to all people, that (J)by all means I might save some. 23 I do it all for the sake of the gospel, (K)that I may share with them in its blessings.

24 Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one receives (L)the prize? So (M)run that you may obtain it. 25 Every (N)athlete exercises self-control in all things. They do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we (O)an imperishable. 26 So I do not run aimlessly; I (P)do not box as one (Q)beating the air. 27 But I discipline my body and (R)keep it under control,[a] lest after preaching to others (S)I myself should be (T)disqualified.

Warning Against Idolatry

10 For I do not want you to be unaware, brothers,[b] that our fathers were all under (U)the cloud, and all (V)passed through the sea, and all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea, and (W)all ate the same (X)spiritual food, and (Y)all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank from the spiritual Rock that followed them, and the Rock was Christ. Nevertheless, with most of them God was not pleased, for (Z)they were overthrown[c] in the wilderness.

Now these things took place as examples for us, that we might not desire evil as (AA)they did. (AB)Do not be idolaters (AC)as some of them were; as it is written, (AD)“The people sat down to eat and drink and rose up to play.” (AE)We must not indulge in sexual immorality (AF)as some of them did, and (AG)twenty-three thousand fell in a single day. We must not put Christ[d] to the test, (AH)as some of them did and (AI)were destroyed by serpents, 10 nor grumble, (AJ)as some of them did and (AK)were destroyed by (AL)the Destroyer. 11 Now these things happened to them as an example, but (AM)they were written down for our instruction, (AN)on whom the end of the ages has come. 12 Therefore (AO)let anyone who thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall. 13 No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. (AP)God is faithful, and (AQ)he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.

Psalm 34:1-10

Taste and See That the Lord Is Good

[a] Of David, when he (A)changed his behavior before (B)Abimelech, so that he drove him out, and he went away.

34 I will bless the Lord (C)at all times;
his praise shall continually be in my mouth.
My soul (D)makes its boast in the Lord;
let the humble hear and (E)be glad.
Oh, (F)magnify the Lord with me,
and let us exalt his name together!

I (G)sought the Lord, and he answered me
and delivered me from all my fears.
Those who look to him are (H)radiant,
and their faces shall never be ashamed.
(I)This poor man cried, and the Lord heard him
and (J)saved him out of all his troubles.
(K)The angel of the Lord (L)encamps
around those who fear him, and delivers them.

Oh, (M)taste and see that (N)the Lord is good!
(O)Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him!
Oh, fear the Lord, you his saints,
for those who fear him have no lack!
10 (P)The young lions suffer want and hunger;
but those who (Q)seek the Lord lack no good thing.

Nehemiah 9:22-10:39, 1 Corinthians 9:19-10:13, Psalms 34:1-10, Proverbs 21:13

Today is the 15th day of August welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I am Brian it’s great to be here with you as we seal another week up and continue to move forward because the only way is forward. And, so, this week, yeah, we live into this week and then it becomes a part of our history and we start over again with a shiny sparkly week that we get to live into. But now we are at the conclusion of the week so let’s take that final step for this week. We’re reading from the English Standard Version this week and we’re back in the book of Nehemiah. Today chapter 9 verse 22 through 10 verse 39. And just by way of reminder we’re in the middle of a prayer, the law has been read to the people, great repentance is happening, a great revival is happening, and we’re in the middle of a prayer.

Prayer:

Father, we thank You for Your word and we are grateful again at the end of another week, we are grateful again that You have brought us this far. We’re still here. The days go by and they add up to weeks and we realize we’re still here, You are still sustaining us, You are still guiding and directing us. We…we would have lost it all, including our minds by now without You, and yet You are here Fathering us, being patient with us, helping us grow and mature. And, so, we acknowledge this as we end another week. You have been faithful, and You have given us what we need, and You have instructed us, and our role is to trust You. And, so, as we release this week, we trust You, and as we look into the new week, we trust You. There is no safer thing to do. There is no safer place to be. Everything else is in our own strength and we are not strong enough. But You are the most-high God our Father and we trust You. And, so, come Holy Spirit well up from within, lead us into all truth, lead us forward in the name of Jesus we ask. Amen.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Hey, family this is Dave from Colorado I was wondering if I could ask for some prayers for my nephew Richie. He is right about 40 years old and his girlfriend Tammy, they’ve been together probably like 20 years something like that. She was on a waiting list for several years for kidney, you know, attached to the dialysis machine and not really able to go too far from home, but she finally got the kidney and that was January last year and then, you know, things are looking better. She was able to go to the mountains for the day or go camping, you know, she was just starting to kind of enjoy life. Anyway, yesterday morning God decided to bring her home during her sleep. I guess I suppose it was painless but my nephew he is just devastated and so are her kids so if you could pray for them that would…that would be awesome. I appreciate that. And also, White as Snow, I heard your call last week and it sounds like not only you don’t have to struggle with all those doors anymore but kind of sounds to me like God opened one of them and got you in a little better position. Anyway, I just wanted you to know you’re going to be in my daily prayers now. You know, as a fellow truck driver I know what it’s like out there on the road. Anyway, I guess that’s it for today. I love you all family and I appreciate you all so much. We’ll talk to you later.

Good morning DAB family this is Rebecca from North West Arkansas. I’m calling to pray for Jude from Maryland that has gone to the hospital for COVID symptoms. You called in and you’re going to the hospital and you wanted to pray for other people and I just think that is precious and I just wanted to pray for you. Dear Father we pray right now that You would put Your hands on Jude, and that he would heal her completely, that You would give her Your Holy Spirit and the strength of Your Holy Spirit in her. Help her feel that and help her know that You’re with her. Be with her doctors and nurses. I pray that You would protect all the doctors and nurses that are taking care of COVID patients right now and that You would give them strength, give them what they need physically and help them have the rest they need. Lord I pray that You’ll also be with all the children going back to school and be with their teachers. I pray that You would protect them from this virus and help them to learn in a health and safe environment. Lord thank You so much for DAB and thank You for Brian and his family and all those who participate in making this a wonderful podcast. We love You and we thank You Father and we praise You in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Hello Daily Audio…Audio Bible family this is Theo I was led by God to this…to this site and to this Prayer Wall. Thank you, Pastor for everything that you’ve done. I’m new to this, just a few days old to this site, and I absolutely have fallen in love with it. Thank you for the brothers and sisters that have been praying for me since I’ve posted my prayer request on the Prayer Wall. And I’ve attempted to reach out to others that need prayer also. And just continue to pray for me for protection and healing. And I really need it. And I just want to say how much this has changed my life and my walk with Christ. And I just want to say that I appreciate everything that every…everyone is doing just loving and caring for each other. So, I just want to say thank you very much. And as I said in the Prayer Wall, a little bit of love and a lot of prayer goes a very long way and I greatly appreciate it. Thank you very much. God bless you.

Hi family at Shannon from Texas and I need some prayer today. I know God transcends time. S,o the simplest thing happened this morning and I am losing it because I feel like I’m just losing it because of everything that’s going on. I lost a credit card and I feel like the world falling apart. So, I know that this little thing is pushing me over the edge like this…I am just not doing well. So, I’ve been taking care of a sweet little six-month-old baby boy that screams constantly. I’ve been finding myself just getting angry over prayers that are answered and just hope deferred. So, please pray that I find that card and that I just…just for me overall. Thank you. Love you.

Hello Daily Audio Bible family this is Sunset Cindy in Washington I am a first-time caller. I just started listening to DAB and actually last month, July 17th and I am so thankful that my cousin, shout out to my sweet cousin for suggesting this. She could tell I was struggling with some, you know, loneliness and isolation and things that are happening during this COVID crisis that were in and out it’s so helping me to focus on other things, focus on the things of the Lord and give me an opportunity to hear His word and listen to people all around the world. It is astonishing the connection I feel with all of you. And I just wanted to pray for Valerie who’s also a new listener. I was listening today it’s August 12th. She is calling in to say she’s trying to catch up as I am also trying to catch up. I would love to catch up with all the rest of you. I know I’ve got a long way to go. It’s August and I…I…but I’m almost through January as well. So, I’m just praying for her. And also, Jude I heard you call in about going to the hospital and praying for your COVID symptoms that you would be well and 100% and all of the medical providers that are helping with this crisis. I would also like to have the family pray for my immediate family. I have a family member who’s in…extreme anxiety attacks are happening to his mental…you know it’s just really affecting him mentally…

Hi family this is __ in __ South Africa my message today is for Valerie. Valerie, I heard you call in today on August 12th and I just wanted to say welcome. I always get so excited when I hear a new voice on…on DAB and it’s just, yeah, it’s just amazing to have you as part of the family. So, yeah, 2 and ½ weeks you’re in there, you’re going and I just pray that God would…would sustain you and help you to…to reduce the number of ebbs that you mentioned, ebbs and flows, and increase the number, the amount of flowing daily hours of routine and with purpose. I’ve been listening to DAB for about 10 months. It’s just changed my life in so many ways. It’s just blown me away and just continuing to do so daily. It’s hard work listening and…and concentrating and I’ve been writing notes and trying…I’ve got hundreds of questions because the Bible is a tricky book but it’s just wonderful to…to be able to…to learn daily to be able to enjoy Brian’s incredible teaching and the way…his explanation of Scripture and I just pray for…for enormous joy for you and purpose and focus as you continue on this journey and pray for strength and comfort for you and, yeah, just once again thank you for phoning in. It’s wonderful to hear your voice and I pray that God would bless you richly on this journey. Lots of love. Bye.

Nehemiah 8:1-9:21, 1 Corinthians 9:1-18, Psalms 33:12-22, Proverbs 21:11-12

Today is the 14th day of August welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I’m Brian it is great to be here with you today as we approach the landing on another week and…and move forward…move forward into the weekend and will start another spark…sparkly shiny new week and we’ll just keep going with this rhythm day after day, step-by-step around the Global Campfire. And, so, the next step leads us back into this book that we have been reading all week, Nehemiah. We’re reading from the English Standard Version this week and we’ll read Nehemiah 8 verse 1 through 9 verse 21 today.

Commentary:

Okay. So, in our reading in first Corinthians today we can see that Paul is being questioned about money basically. We can deduce this because of his response. He’s responding to some things that have been said to him, and he’s exasperated by like saying, “why…why…why shouldn’t I earn my living from the gospel? This is my job. Like this is what I do. This is with the other apostles do. This is what is even provided for in the Mosaic law. Like, I’m…as basically I’m a member of the clergy. This is like a full-time gig. I’m traveling all over the place. I’m running for my life half the time. I should at least maybe be able to eat food”, right? Like, so he’s kind of coming back at what they’re saying and there’s probably an undercurrent here because in a number of Paul’s letters we will see him talk about a collection, a collection for the poor Jerusalem church. And in some cases, he’ll even be like, “when I get there make sure you have the money ready.” So, there’s probably an undercurrent going on that connects itself to the Jerusalem Council itself. And we read about the Jerusalem Council in the book of Acts. And at that counsel that’s where a very, very pivotal decision was to be made and the essential question at that counsel was “who gets to be in? Who gets to be in the church? Who gets to be a believer in Jesus?” Because as we’ve already talked about a number of times and we will talk more as…as we continue our journey through the Bible, the Hebrew believers felt that Jesus was a Hebrew rabbi and that His message was a Hebrew message in a Hebrew context and so if you wanted to follow Him you needed to essentially become Hebrew, convert to Judaism and then follow Jesus. But the Gentiles, on the other hand, were still receiving the Holy Spirit. And, so, it was as if God has made this decision, which is what they looked at and what they understood and what they decided – “God is the one giving out his Holy Spirit and we can’t argue with what God is doing. And, so, we have to…even though it bends our minds…we’re gonna have to get on board with what God is doing.” But not everybody could do that. And it seems that the Bible goes to great lengths to tell us that the mother church, the Jerusalem church was a poor church of poor people. And, so, it seems maybe that because Paul didn’t frequent Jerusalem that often, because there wasn’t kind of constant dialogue going on, that Paul had at least alluded to the fact that as he continued to share the gospel among the Gentiles and plant the churches among the Gentiles, that he would not forget the Jerusalem church, that he would not forget that this is kind of the “where it started”, and that these people needed help to be strong. He explicitly says this in some of his letters. So, we can get into conjecture here and go like, “okay. The church at Corinth, maybe there on board with this collection, but also like paying Paul and there’s all this money being asked for and this is a new church and these are…this is a cosmopolitan urban area with educated people and who are gonna ask questions.” And, so, we see some of the different entanglements, like just some of the stuff going on in the early church. And it’s so fascinating. It’s so fascinating because, I kinda grew up thinking that everything was…Jesus ascended back to the Father and those early days of the church, they were just magnificent. And yes, they were magnificent but they are full of the same kinds of struggles that we can continue to struggle with today, in one form or another and that's…in one way that’s encouraging. In another way it’s like, shouldn’t we be doing better? Like, shouldn’t we…we’ve had 2000 years of practice, why do we keep following the same circle? Like, why do we keep doing the same things over and over? They keep yielding the same results. Why don’t we fully live into what is described in the New Testament as our identity as children of the most-high God? And it shows us that, yeah, they had work to do then and we have work to do now. But we’re not alone. This has been an ongoing struggle.

Prayer:

Father we invite You to that. The thing is, what we’re asking for is that we could overcome some of these things, that they wouldn’t only ever be struggles, that we would actually overcome some of these things in our lives as we become completely and fully aware of who we are in You. We know who we are without You and we are a colossal mess. We can fool ourselves into the thinking we’re the greatest thing that that was ever born. But the truth is when we have to look in the mirror for real and examine our lives, we are a colossal mess. The only thing that ties it together is You because we were created this way. We will only ever be a mess when we try to navigate anything without You, and we’re ashamed to confess that we try to navigate a lot of things without You. And it’s helpful to know like we’re not the only ones, that this has been going on a long time, but we would like to step forward. And…and it seems as if You would like that too, very, very much. That You have been so patient, that You have been so kind, that You have been so loving, that You have Fathered us. But maybe it’s now time to grow up a little. And, so, come Holy Spirit into these long struggles of our lives and show us how to live into a new way, a way that puts some of this stuff behind us. We pray this in the precious name of Jesus our Lord. Amen.

Announcements:

dailyaudiobible.com is home base, it’s where you find out what’s going on around here.

And, yeah, you can check out the resources that are available in the Shop. They exist for the journey that we are on together, some things to take us deeper, some things to just encourage us, some things to remind us that we’re in community as we do this, some things to just…to write with, to write in to journal our journey through the Scriptures as God speaks to us. And what a gift to ourselves and to future generations if we do that. I mean to write down a year of our lives in the Bible and the things that the Scriptures speak to us and the things that are going on and how…how they work together and how it was that God spoke to us through His word and gave us the answers and directions that we needed. That’s a gift. It’s a gift when were out there and things get foggy and we can’t see and we’re not clear and we can look back and see the story, “no. I’ve…I haven’t been down this road but I’ve been down a road like this and God is faithful.” To know that and then to pass that forward is a great thing. So, these resources are available. They were created for this journey. So, check that out.

If you want to  partner with the Daily Audio Bible you can do that at dailyaudiobible.com as well. There is a link on the homepage. And I say it all the time, like pretty much every day, thank you, humbly and gratefully because that is a daily…that…that is a daily sensation of awe that this is happening, that we live in a time where there’s technology like this where we can be in community no matter where we are and be the body of Christ, no matter where we are and feel connected to that global body, which we call the Global Campfire and we can feel connected and not alone. If that is important, if that is life-giving to you then thank you for your partnership. That is how the fire keeps burning. So, thank you. So, there’s a link on the homepage. There is a Give button in the upper right-hand corner of the app or the mailing address is PO Box 1996 Spring Hill Tennessee 37174.

And, of course, if you have a prayer request or encouragement there is a Hotline button in the app. No matter where we are, no matter what time it is, no matter what time zone, no matter what continent, that button is the hotline and we can always reach out. And, so…so, that’s there or the number to dial is 877-942-4253.

And that’s it for today. I’m Brian I love you and I’ll be waiting for you here tomorrow.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Well hello DABbers I was just listening to the prayer requests today and I heard from Louise from the states and she was asking for prayer for her son Peter who she said his birthday was August 10th and he’s 24 and he’s away from the Lord. I could hear the pain in your voice Louise. It’s a special day for me because it’s my birthday, August 10th is my birthday and definitely not 24 but I just wanted to say a quick prayer for Peter. Father, I just pray right now wherever Peter is in this world that You would send Your Spirit Father in a unique way through Your body Father, someone that he knows, someone that he doesn’t know Lord just I pray that You would get a hold of this Young man and that You would change his heart, draw him to You. And I just pray for protection on him Father that You would speak life to him. I pray against any death, any demonic forces, any drugs, anything like that Father. I just pray that he would…that it would just fall to the wayside and that Your Spirit would be very clear and that You would draw him back to You and to his family and that it would be a redemptive story in Jesus’ name. Amen. Today my theme is these are a few of my favorite things and I am thankful for the daily by the on my 55th birthday. Thank You Lord for life. Thank You for Your word thank You for Your joy and thank You for this family.

Greetings everyone this is Olivia Zara from London England today is the 10th of August. This is not my first time calling in, but I would definitely say that I’m quite new when it comes to the Daily Audio Bible app. I just joined this year but enjoying participating and sending in prayers when can. What rang new to me today I would say is listening to Ms. Louise from the states concerning her son Peter who is turning 24. Happy birthday Peter! Never know, you can be listening to the Daily Audio Bible app as well, but I was tremendously moved, I don’t know why, I’m not a mother myself yet but I guess because me, I’m 26 and I know what it’s like to witness running away from the Lord as well as myself at times running away from the purpose that God has given my life. And please join me in prayer. So, Lord I place Your beloved son Peter into Your precious and merciful loving hands. Lord You know him by name and by nature of whatever reason he’s running away from Your glorious Spirit I ask in Jesus’ name that he takes heart to find rest and lay down his burden on to You completely. Lord I thank You for his loving mother. Reward her trust in You and guide her son into Your eternal kingdom. May Your supernatural power bring a new testimony into her life over Your faithfulness in Jesus’ name. Amen. God bless you everyone. By.

Hey family it’s Jesse from Washington I need some prayers for one of my employees. Last night…I mean…today when she came in and she looked pretty upset and I didn’t want to ask her in front of everybody but when we were alone she told me that right outside her kids window last night her three-year-old’s window there was a young African American…African American kid was stabbed to death like literally like 10 feet outside their window and he and his wife have four kids. And, so, just prayer for my employee, his name is Yami and it’s her and her husband and her three-year-old and they couldn’t sleep at all last night. I…I can’t believe she even came in to work. She’s just been such a blessing to our family and to our business. But just prayers that Yami and her family can get some sleep, prayers…I don’t know how your mind would be set at ease after something like that but just prayers that they don’t stress out too much or worry too much about the situation. Only God can do that, obviously. And then prayers for that young family, for those kids, and for the mother, all their family. I can’t even imagine what they’re going through. So, just cover them with your prayer’s family. And, yeah, thanks family. Bye.

Hey Daily Audio Bible family this is Dan in Arizona. I have not called in for some time now. I just wanted to pray for our world and just the many things that are going on, the many things at play in the world. And we know that these things are supposed to happen. We know that the enemy is at work behind the scenes here, but He that is in us is greater than He that is in the world. And I am so thankful and grateful to have Jesus in my heart and know that Jesus is in control no matter what is going on in this world. And I’m praying for peace for myself. I’ve had some battles with anxiety lately and I’m just starting to really come out of it and realizing that it’s because I’ve been trying to hold onto those things and do everything on my own and world put the…literally put the world’s problems on my shoulders. And I’m praying for those of you who share that battle of just putting your world or bills and payments and…and other responsibilities plus the news that is going on constantly 24/7. And, you know what? Jesus says hey take my burden it’s light. And I’m praying for you out there specifically who are going through this battle, I’m praying that you would take on the burden of Jesus because it is light, and His yoke is easy and His burden is light. I love you all family. Be blessed.

Good morning DABbers this is Running Desperately to Jesus. I come to you all with a heavy heart. I’m still struggling with my fornication, I would just be transparent, fornication. I don’t know why that is. This is so hard for me. God has given me many ways out and yet I seem to still keep going back. I don’t know what’s going on with that. It’s…it’s…it’s a battle, I feel it’s a battle within me, my spirit and my flesh are warring so hard. The other thing is is I just want to let everyone know that prayed me during the time I had my grandson, I’m gonna take full responsibility and am sure that I sabotaged this through my stress, through my desire to be in the home by myself, my desire to not have to go through parenting again. Some things were done by another relative where he has been not returned and I feel relief in a sense. I’m not stressed about it but I feel I am at odds with two things that have had such a major impact on my life and that was my grandson coming to live with me, that relationship God knows my desire to have a relationship with him, but in the capacity of grandmother and then this man that I have been physically with and having a hard time with me just walking away. Those are two things that seem to have just turned my world upside down since this COVID thing has caused me to be at home just go to work and come home and nothing in between. So, I’m asking for prayer again. This is Running Desperately to Jesus.

Dear Esther from Flushing Queens now in Orlando Florida I just…I heard you say that you don’t think you have a deep faith and yet you said that you have faith but you just don’t want to be shaken to the core. And sister, I don’t know but I think that faith that knows all the facts, that looks at the reality, that feels all the feelings and yet says, “Lord let it be done unto me, yet though he slay me I will trust in Him”, that’s faith. Faith, I don’t believe is ever going to be a situation where everything’s going great. In fact, that’s when faith seems to wander off, is when everything’s going great. So, it sounds to me like you’re rockin’ it in the faith. And I love your prayers. I want you I I’m gonna pray for you. Father God I thank you for my sister Esther. I think you father God for the beautiful name that you gave her. She’s one of my favorite characters in the Bible in fact she’s a queen. And I thank you Lord that you are fulfilling your purpose for her in her life right now and you’re bringing her through the valley and your setting tables before her in the presence of our enemies. And father God you are going to look for comp overflow and goodness and mercy follow her wherever she goes because she has a heart that trusts in you and follows up to you. Bless her Lord God. Let’s perceive the truth about herself as you see her Lord. She is your treasured possession and I thank you father God for all the blessings of all my dear sisters and brothers in Christ on the DAB. In Jesus name. Treasured possession.

And all the people gathered as one man into the square before (A)the Water Gate. And they told (B)Ezra the scribe to bring the Book of the Law of Moses that the Lord had commanded Israel. So Ezra the priest (C)brought the Law before the assembly, both men and women and all who could understand what they heard, (D)on the first day of the seventh month. (E)And he read from it facing the square before the Water Gate from early morning until midday, in the presence of the men and the women and those who could understand. And the ears of all the people were attentive to the Book of the Law. And Ezra the scribe stood on a wooden platform that they had made for the purpose. And beside him stood Mattithiah, Shema, Anaiah, Uriah, Hilkiah, and Maaseiah on his right hand, and Pedaiah, Mishael, Malchijah, Hashum, Hashbaddanah, Zechariah, and Meshullam on his left hand. And Ezra opened the book in the sight of all the people, for he was above all the people, and as he opened it all the people stood. And Ezra blessed the Lord, the great God, and all the people answered, (F)“Amen, Amen,” (G)lifting up their hands. (H)And they bowed their heads and worshiped the Lord with their faces to the ground. (I)Also Jeshua, Bani, Sherebiah, Jamin, Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodiah, Maaseiah, Kelita, Azariah, Jozabad, Hanan, Pelaiah, the Levites,[a] (J)helped the people to understand the Law, (K)while the people remained in their places. They read from the book, from the Law of God, clearly,[b] and they gave the sense, so that the people understood the reading.

This Day Is Holy

And Nehemiah, who was (L)the governor, and Ezra (M)the priest and scribe, and the Levites who taught the people said to all the people, (N)“This day is holy to the Lord your God; (O)do not mourn or weep.” For all the people wept as they heard the words of the Law. 10 Then he said to them, “Go your way. Eat the fat and drink sweet wine and (P)send portions to anyone who has nothing ready, for this day is holy to our Lord. And do not be grieved, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.” 11 So the Levites calmed all the people, saying, “Be quiet, for this day is holy; do not be grieved.” 12 And all the people went their way to eat and drink and to send portions and to make great rejoicing, because (Q)they had understood the words that were declared to them.

Feast of Booths Celebrated

13 On the second day the heads of fathers' houses of all the people, with the priests and the Levites, came together to Ezra the scribe in order to study the words of the Law. 14 And they found it written in the Law that the Lord had commanded by Moses (R)that the people of Israel should dwell in booths[c] during the feast of the seventh month, 15 and that they should proclaim it and (S)publish it in all their towns and (T)in Jerusalem, “Go out to the hills and bring (U)branches of olive, wild olive, myrtle, palm, and other leafy trees to make booths, as it is written.” 16 So the people went out and brought them and made booths for themselves, each (V)on his roof, and in their courts and in the courts of the house of God, and in the square at (W)the Water Gate and in the square at (X)the Gate of Ephraim. 17 And all the assembly of those who had returned from the captivity made booths and lived in the booths, for from the days of Jeshua the son of Nun to that day (Y)the people of Israel had not done so. And there was (Z)very great rejoicing. 18 And day by day, from the first day to the last day, (AA)he read from the Book of the Law of God. They kept the feast seven days, and (AB)on the eighth day there was a solemn assembly, according to the rule.

The People of Israel Confess Their Sin

Now on the twenty-fourth day of (AC)this month the people of Israel were assembled (AD)with fasting (AE)and in sackcloth, (AF)and with earth on their heads. (AG)And the Israelites[d] separated themselves from all foreigners and stood and confessed their sins and the iniquities of their fathers. (AH)And they stood up in their place and read from the Book of the Law of the Lord their God for a quarter of the day; for another quarter of it they made confession and worshiped the Lord their God. On the stairs of the Levites stood (AI)Jeshua, Bani, Kadmiel, Shebaniah, Bunni, Sherebiah, Bani, and Chenani; and they cried with a loud voice to the Lord their God. Then the Levites, Jeshua, Kadmiel, Bani, Hashabneiah, Sherebiah, Hodiah, Shebaniah, and Pethahiah, said, “Stand up and bless the Lord your God from everlasting to everlasting. (AJ)Blessed be your glorious name, which is exalted above all blessing and praise.

[e] (AK)“You are the Lord, you alone. (AL)You have made heaven, (AM)the heaven of heavens, (AN)with all their host, (AO)the earth and all that is on it, the seas and all that is in them; (AP)and you preserve all of them; and the host of heaven worships you. You are the Lord, the God (AQ)who chose Abram and brought him out of (AR)Ur of the Chaldeans (AS)and gave him the name Abraham. (AT)You found his heart faithful before you, (AU)and made with him the covenant to give to his offspring (AV)the land of the Canaanite, the Hittite, the Amorite, the Perizzite, the Jebusite, and the Girgashite. (AW)And you have kept your promise, for you are righteous.

(AX)“And you saw the affliction of our fathers in Egypt and heard (AY)their cry at the Red Sea, 10 (AZ)and performed signs and wonders against Pharaoh and all his servants and all the people of his land, for you knew that (BA)they acted arrogantly against our fathers. And (BB)you made a name for yourself, as it is to this day. 11 (BC)And you divided the sea before them, so that they went through the midst of the sea on dry land, and you cast their pursuers into the depths, (BD)as a stone into mighty waters. 12 By (BE)a pillar of cloud you led them in the day, and by a pillar of fire in the night to light for them the way in which they should go. 13 (BF)You came down on Mount Sinai (BG)and spoke with them from heaven and gave them (BH)right rules and true laws, good statutes and commandments, 14 (BI)and you made known to them your holy Sabbath and commanded them commandments and statutes and a law by Moses your servant. 15 (BJ)You gave them bread from heaven for their hunger and (BK)brought water for them out of the rock for their thirst, and you (BL)told them to go in to possess the land that you had sworn to give them.

16 “But they and our fathers (BM)acted presumptuously and stiffened their neck and did not obey your commandments. 17 They refused to obey (BN)and were not mindful of the wonders that you performed among them, but they stiffened their neck and appointed a leader to return to their slavery in Egypt.[f] But you are a God ready to forgive, (BO)gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love, and did not forsake them. 18 Even (BP)when they had made for themselves a golden[g] calf and said, ‘This is your God who brought you up out of Egypt,’ (BQ)and had committed great blasphemies, 19 you (BR)in your great mercies did not forsake them in the wilderness. (BS)The pillar of cloud to lead them in the way did not depart from them by day, (BT)nor the pillar of fire by night to light for them the way by which they should go. 20 (BU)You gave your good Spirit to instruct them (BV)and did not withhold your manna from their mouth and gave them water for their thirst. 21 (BW)Forty years you sustained them in the wilderness, and they lacked nothing. Their clothes did not wear out and their feet did not swell.

1 Corinthians 9:1-18

Paul Surrenders His Rights

(A)Am I not free? (B)Am I not an apostle? (C)Have I not seen Jesus our Lord? (D)Are not you my workmanship in the Lord? If to others I am not an apostle, at least I am to you, for you are (E)the seal of my apostleship in the Lord.

This is my defense to those who would examine me. (F)Do we not have the right to eat and drink? (G)Do we not have the right to take along a believing wife,[a] as do the other apostles and (H)the brothers of the Lord and (I)Cephas? Or is it only Barnabas and I who have no right to refrain from working for a living? (J)Who serves as a soldier at his own expense? (K)Who plants a vineyard without eating any of its fruit? Or who tends a flock without getting some of the milk?

Do I say these things on human authority? Does not the Law say the same? For it is written in the Law of Moses, (L)“You shall not muzzle an ox when it treads out the grain.” Is it for oxen that God is concerned? 10 Does he not certainly speak for our sake? It was written (M)for our sake, because (N)the plowman should plow in hope and the thresher thresh in hope of sharing in the crop. 11 (O)If we have sown spiritual things among you, is it too much if we reap material things from you? 12 If others share this rightful claim on you, do not we even more?

Nevertheless, (P)we have not made use of this right, but we endure anything (Q)rather than put an obstacle in the way of the gospel of Christ. 13 Do you not know that (R)those who are employed in the temple service get their food from the temple, and those who serve at the altar share in the sacrificial offerings? 14 In the same way, the Lord commanded that (S)those who proclaim the gospel should get their living by the gospel.

15 But (T)I have made no use of any of these rights, nor am I writing these things to secure any such provision. For I would rather die than have anyone (U)deprive me of my ground for boasting. 16 For if I preach the gospel, that gives me no ground for boasting. For (V)necessity is laid upon me. Woe to me if I do not preach the gospel! 17 For if I do this of my own will, I have a reward, but if not of my own will, I am still entrusted with (W)a stewardship. 18 What then is my reward? That in my preaching (X)I may present the gospel free of charge, so as not to make full use of my right in the gospel.

Psalm 33:12-22

12 (A)Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord,
the people whom he has (B)chosen as his heritage!

13 The Lord (C)looks down from heaven;
he sees all the children of man;
14 from (D)where he sits enthroned he (E)looks out
on all the inhabitants of the earth,
15 he who fashions the hearts of them all
and observes all their deeds.
16 (F)The king is not saved by his great army;
a warrior is not delivered by his great strength.
17 (G)The war horse is a false hope for salvation,
and by its great might it cannot rescue.

18 Behold, (H)the eye of the Lord is on those who fear him,
(I)on those who hope in his steadfast love,
19 that he may (J)deliver their soul from death
and keep them alive in (K)famine.

20 Our soul (L)waits for the Lord;
he is our (M)help and (N)our shield.
21 For our heart is (O)glad in him,
because we (P)trust in his holy name.
22 Let your steadfast love, O Lord, be upon us,
even as we hope in you.

Proverbs 21:11-12

11 When (A)a scoffer is punished, the simple becomes wise;
when a wise man is instructed, he gains knowledge.
12 The Righteous One (B)observes the house of the wicked;
he throws the wicked down to ruin.

Nehemiah 5:14-7:73, 1 Corinthians 8:1-13, Psalms 33:1-11, Proverbs 21:8-10

Today is the 13th day of August welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I am Brian it is…it’s great to come around the Global Campfire together and, I don’t know, grab a seat, step away from it all for a minute in this little oasis that we have created for ourselves, a peaceful place in the midst of chaos at times, a place of serenity, a place that we can allow God’s word to speak into our hearts and minds and…and lives. So, it’s great to be here with you right now, today, as we take the next step forward and that will lead us back into the book of Nehemiah. We’re reading from the English Standard Version this week. Nehemiah chapter 5 verse 14 through 7 verse 73.

Commentary:

Okay. So, we’ve been watching the story of Nehemiah as we read through it and what we’re gleaning from it is just a very, very…like a front row seat to the way that he was leading things, how he got a vision for this wall to be rebuilt in Jerusalem while he was cupbearer to the king of Persia, how he interceded, how he planned before he ever told the king, how it was that he invited the king into the story, and how the king got on board and sent him, how he was provided for, how he showed up and was just kind of incognito, didn’t show up announcing himself and his authority to do what he was going to do, how he just kind counted the cost, looked the whole situation over, and then how he cast vision and people got on board and how that only…that…that’s when the problems began. They started rebuilding the wall and then the voices of intimidation come against them. The voices of ridicule and discouragement come against them. The threats of attack comes against them, and they just…they keep going. I mean, they make the adjustments necessary and even though that slows things down they keep going. And we should see that as they get closer and closer the completion of the goal of the dream of the wall then the…the problems, the challenges that they face escalate. And in some ways, we should just…we should feel a sense of encouragement. Like this is how it goes. Like when we face these things, we’re not the only one. But what is it that puts the wind in Nehemiah’s sails? Like, what is it that keeps him going? That’s kind of what we get to in today’s reading. We’re able to observe Nehemiah’s heart, like his motives and that’s ultimately…when we’re trying to accomplish something, and it becomes hard and it always does, it’s our hearts motive that will dictate whether we will persevere or whether we will surrender and give up. And, so, we see Nehemiah’s motives is in the way that he deals with everybody else. He’s not lording it over them because of his appointed position. And, in fact, he’s not even taking what he deserves according to his position because of the burden that would place on the other people around him. And there’s nothing wrong with him earning what he’d earned. That…that was his job and that was his compensation, but he saw that the people he’s working on this wall, the people that he’s on this mission with are the people that would have to provide that and they’re already working their hearts out. And, so, instead of like trying to add to that load so that he can benefit personally or for that matter just not have to pay out of his own pocket, he…he chooses…he chooses not to put the burden on them and that had to speak volumes toward his character and his leadership to the people that he was leading. He’s providing out of his own pocket for his own job. So, we could safely say like, “this is a job that Nehemiah wanted so bad, he was so passionate to accomplish this he would have done it for free” because he was. And that shows his motives and it shows that he is resolute in his purpose. He is there for a specific thing, to get this wall built in. And this wall needs to be built, not for some kind of ground-floor opportunity to rebuild Jerusalem to become rich. This wall needs to be built because God’s temple is inside those walls and God’s temple must be protected. And I mean if you think about it. So, there is this city named Jerusalem and it’s an ancient city and its very, very famous for lots and lots of reasons, over lots and lots of generations even at this time and it has been destroyed and it’s being rebuilt and now there is a temple and there are walls. So, you would think like, the real estate inside those walls is now very, very valuable and this is an opportunity to use position to get rich, to build wealth, to build…to own property. It’s just that Nehemiah, like he didn’t do any of that stuff. He was there for a reason and nothing was gonna distract him from that reason. That…the wall was his mission from God, and he was in that mission with a single purpose with the whole heart, which would…which would help the people…the people who were following Nehemiah to be on board, like to get his heart about the whole thing as well. And then the politics got into the situation. So, these ringleaders of the opposition, Sanballat and Tobiah. I mean they tried to discourage. They tried to ridicule or make fun. They tried to threaten and intimidate, and those things were not successful. And, so, they start sending him letters, “hey, we need to get on the same page. Come talk to us. Let’s…let’s meet about this.” And, so, they send him four letters of the same…same thing and Nehemiah basically responds the same way, “I am on this wall. I am not coming down from this wall. Why should I come down from this wall to listen to you when all you’ve done is discourage and intimidate us and try to stop us? Like, why should I come down and talk to you?” And, so, then they send the open letter like, “well, you should come talk to us because the king is going to find out what you’re really trying to do.” And they had cooked up this thing that the real reason Nehemiah was there working so hard was for his own benefit, like they’re gonna get the wall done and he’s gonna declare himself king, and that the prophets are gonna prophesy about him and he’s gonna try to take over, which was a complete fabrication, but if it took hold it with be the end of Nehemiah, like he would be executed for this. And this is what Nehemiah says, “they all wanted to frighten us, thinking their hands will drop from the work and it will not be done, but now O God strengthen my hands.” And they just worked harder. Like, basically Nehemiah was like, “okay. If I’m going to have to defend myself, if this is gonna like pull me away because of the politics of the situation we better finish what we started and they worked harder. So, the politics didn’t work. And, so, the enemies then try to bring religion into the mix and the payoff a prophet to try to coerce Nehemiah into the temple where it looks like he’s blockading himself where it’s like he’s done something wrong and he’s hiding out in God’s temple and this would discredit him. And Nehemiah is…because he’s got a single purpose and because he’s been true and because he’s walking in wisdom, he can see what they’re trying to do and he even realizes, “wow! Wow! It’s like my…some people that I even know and who know the story here, they had a price. They’re speaking for God and they had a price. This is…this isn’t what God’s saying,” And Nehemiah’s like, “I am not…I am not gonna do this stuff. I am not going to play these games.” And, so, we see that through it all, the mission, the dream, the thing, the calling, the purpose, that never got unclear. It never got cloudy. Nehemiah was there for something specific, and so all of his efforts, no matter what came his way and he had significant obstacles that we’ve seen so far, he did not stop. He was there to finish what he started.

Prayer:

Father, again as we have said in days past, thank You. Thank You that this story has been written down for us to look into and examine and interpret and bring on board into our own hearts as it…it works in conjunction with some of our own stories and some of our own dreams and some of our own goals and some of our own callings. And, so, we invite Your Holy Spirit again to continue to lead us into all truth but give us wisdom from the story of Nehemiah. Give us wisdom and insight into our own stories because we can see resolute and single-purpose to person here achieving a goal, but…but we can also see the voices of discouragement and threats and politics and religion and all of the things that are brought to bear against this story and how he is able to look through it all and stay clear on what the mission was. Help us to see that too. We ask this in the precious name of Jesus our Lord. Amen.

Check out the Community section. That’s where the Prayer Wall is and that is a place to reach out anytime, to reach out asking for prayer, but to also reach out in prayer and encourage your brothers and sisters who are asking. It’s a place that we can always go and turn outward. We spend a lot of our time turned inward because we’re…we’re all going through something…we’re all going through something and it…it…it can become an obsession. We’re…we’re looking inward…we’re working on the things that we’re trying to move out of the way. Sometimes it can lead us into this vortex that just goes down into the darkness when what we need to do is reach outward, look outward, reach toward one another, shoulder one another’s burdens. So, the Prayer Wall is a wonderful place to do that. So, check that out.

Just give them grace, both of them grace Jordan and his wife and the kids too. Restore calm and gentleness and patience and humor and…and just…and the joys of parenting because it’s tough even with the challenges of it all. Hello, my wonderful DAB family this is Rosie in Oklahoma and today is Sunday, August 9th. I’m calling in right now to ask you to pray for my granddaughter Anisa and her husband Isaiah. They’ve been married a little over year and a half, and he told her two days after she had their son that he didn’t have any feelings for her anymore. And we have talked to him and let him know that love is not a feeling it’s an action and we don’t always go by our feelings. But I think he has his eyes on other people and he’s not listening to anybody. And right now my granddaughter and my great-grandson are staying with me and it just breaks my heart because she’s trying so hard to restore her marriage and she’s been praying a lot and she reads the Bible and she even reads the Bible to the baby. And that you would pray for him as well his name, his name is Demaree. And I just want to ask you guys to please pray for them. I love you DAB family. I appreciate you more than you…than you’ll ever know. God bless you. Bye.

My name is Julie I’m calling from Petula Montana I’ve never called __ for introducing me to DAB. Today is August 9th. I’m listening to August 2 and I just want to say prayers for all the COVID people all this nation. I want to ask for prayers for strength for me. I have been with a cancer patient for 22 years chronic lymphocytic leukemia. Also has had __. He has been my whole life. I met him when I was 34. I am now 58 and I feel that the end is coming and we had a horrible two nights of throwing up and nerve pain. I’ve been through seven chemo’s with him, numerous tumor removals. He has been…he is the love of my life and it’s been the best and the worst and he is Jewish, and I want him to see Jesus and I want to strengthen my relationship with Christ. And please forgive me, I’m just am lacking sleep and I just….it’s like, bargaining with God to please at this point just take him or care for him as if…as if that can…

Hi family this is Biola from Maryland I hope you’re all doing well. Brian and Jill God bless you God bless your ministry. Well I’m still behind, I’m on July 27th and I’m going to mix the old with the new. I want to say a big shout out to those who transcribe Daily Audio Bible transcripts. God bless you for your labor of love. Mike from Reading I heard your prayer request for your daughter Annie, and I am joining…joining you in prayer for her. Father Lord you said Lord Jesus when you were here on earth that you have come to set the captives free. And, so, Lord of heaven in agreement with my brother and thousands of others who are praying oh God for Annie I break the hold of addiction upon Annie’s life, the hold of this heroin O God Lord, I break it upon her life. Lord Jesus set her free. You have come to…You came specifically for Annie, set her free in the name of Jesus and every work of darkness in her life we command you to cease and desist in Jesus’ name. Lord bring the prodigal daughter back home in the name of Jesus. Carmen how can I advise you in less than 30 seconds? I’ve been where you are Carmen. What I would just say my sister is that you should give yourself time to grieve. Do not rush into any relationship. Just process what is going on and give yourself time to grieve. And what is very important is that you forgive your husband or your ex-husband now that you will forgive him, you know. And I pray that God will comfort your heart and God will touch you in the name of Jesus. And then I want to pray for Gigi’s sister. Gigi, I heard your prayer request. I read it rather because I’ve not listened because I read it on Tumblr and I’m praying for your sister, that she will find a job, a good job and God will comfort her even over the passing of your dad, that God will comfort you all in the name of Jesus. Anonymous, I am praying that the truth will be found out in your situation, that God will step in and help you and the truth will be found out in the name of Jesus.

Hello Daily Audio Bible family this is BW in NC I hope everyone’s doing well. I’m calling in today for Megan who called in about seeking counseling and living with her boyfriend before marriage. Megan, God is telling you what to do here and I think you know, and God is your ultimate provider. He is not gonna leave you stranded if you follow Him. Also, it sounds like you may be getting ready to become unequally…unequally yoked, which God also commands against as well. I would say to you as a male that, if your boyfriend will not respect your wishes to honor God then you should probably not worry about losing him but you should run from him. And as always seems to be the case, if you’ll honor God you will be provided for in abundant ways, in ways that are…ways that you would never be able to imagine or understand, but you will never go wrong by honoring what you know God is telling you to do. I’ll be praying for you and I know you’ll be okay so long as you honor your God.

Good morning DAB family this is Jonathan from North Carolina and I’m calling to pray for Mike and his daughter Annie in the situation with a heroin addiction and the baby on the way and recovering. Dear Jesus, I just want a lift before You as Mike has done many times his daughter Annie. And this whole situation Lord, I thank You that she came to the point of coming to him and wanting to get help and yet God it seems that she has left the recovery program again and God I have no idea how hard it is for her to go into recovery or what that’s like but I just pray that You will strengthen her, that You will change Your heart, that You will help her to know that…that You can strengthen her to tear away from this addiction Lord that’s been a part of her life for only You know how long. And God I’m just sitting around my porch looking at a rainbow, a sign of Your promise, and I just thank You for Your promises and I thank You for Mike and I thank You for Annie and I just pray that You would bring his daughter Annie home. He talked about her and it’s almost like she’s…she’s gone and it’s just a ghost that’s left and God I just pray by the power of Your Spirit that You would deliver Annie, that You would comfort Mike in this time. I can’t even imagine the pain and I pray that he will sense Your presence in this time and Annie as well Lord, that she will just know beyond the shadow of a doubt that You’re there to deliver her in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Nehemiah 5:14-7:73

Nehemiah's Generosity

14 Moreover, from the time that I was appointed to be their governor in the land of Judah, from (A)the twentieth year to (B)the thirty-second year of Artaxerxes the king, twelve years, (C)neither I nor my brothers ate the food allowance of the governor. 15 The former governors who were before me laid heavy burdens on the people and took from them for their daily ration[a] forty shekels[b] of silver. Even their servants lorded it over the people. But I did not do so, (D)because of the fear of God. 16 I also persevered in the work on this wall, and we acquired no land, and all my servants were gathered there for the work. 17 Moreover, there were (E)at my table 150 men, Jews and officials, besides those who came to us from the nations that were around us. 18 (F)Now what was prepared at my expense[c] for each day was one ox and six choice sheep and birds, and every ten days all kinds of wine in abundance. Yet for all this (G)I did not demand the food allowance of the governor, because the service was too heavy on this people. 19 (H)Remember for my good, O my God, all that I have done for this people.

Conspiracy Against Nehemiah

Now when (I)Sanballat and Tobiah and (J)Geshem the Arab and the rest of our enemies heard that I had built the wall and that there was no breach left in it ((K)although up to that time I had not set up the doors in the gates), Sanballat and Geshem sent to me, saying, “Come and let us meet together at Hakkephirim in the plain of (L)Ono.” But they intended to do me harm. And I sent messengers to them, saying, “I am doing a great work and I cannot come down. Why should the work stop while I leave it and come down to you?” And they sent to me four times in this way, and I answered them in the same manner. In the same way Sanballat for the fifth time sent his servant to me with an open letter in his hand. In it was written, “It is reported among the nations, and Geshem[d] also says it, that you and (M)the Jews intend to rebel; that is why you are building the wall. And according to these reports you wish to become their king. And you have also set up prophets to proclaim concerning you in Jerusalem, ‘There is a king in Judah.’ And now the king will hear of these reports. So now come and let us take counsel together.” Then I sent to him, saying, “No such things as you say have been done, for you are inventing them out of your own mind.” For they all wanted to frighten us, thinking, “Their hands will drop from the work, and it will not be done.” But now, O God,[e] strengthen my hands.

10 Now when I went into the house of Shemaiah the son of Delaiah, son of Mehetabel, who was (N)confined to his home, he said, “Let us meet together in the house of God, within the temple. Let us close the doors of the temple, for they are coming to kill you. They are coming to kill you by night.” 11 But I said, “Should such a man as I run away? And what man such as I could go into the temple and live?[f] I will not go in.” 12 And I understood and saw that God had not sent him, (O)but he had pronounced the prophecy against me because Tobiah and Sanballat had hired him. 13 For this purpose he was hired, that I should be afraid and act in this way and sin, and so they could give me a bad name in order to taunt me. 14 (P)Remember Tobiah and Sanballat, O my God, according to these things that they did, and also (Q)the prophetess Noadiah and the rest of the prophets who wanted to make me afraid.

The Wall Is Finished

15 So the wall was finished on the twenty-fifth day of the month Elul, in fifty-two days. 16 And (R)when all our enemies heard of it, all the nations around us were afraid and fell greatly in their own esteem, (S)for they perceived that this work had been accomplished with the help of our God. 17 Moreover, in those days the nobles of Judah sent many letters to Tobiah, and Tobiah's letters came to them. 18 For many in Judah were bound by oath to him, because he was the son-in-law of Shecaniah the son of (T)Arah: and his son Jehohanan had taken the daughter of (U)Meshullam the son of Berechiah as his wife. 19 Also they spoke of his good deeds in my presence and reported my words to him. And Tobiah sent letters to make me afraid.

Now when the wall had been built (V)and I had set up the doors, and the gatekeepers, the singers, and the Levites had been appointed, I gave (W)my brother Hanani and Hananiah the governor of (X)the castle charge over Jerusalem, for he was (Y)a more faithful and God-fearing man than many. And I said to them, “Let not the gates of Jerusalem be opened until the sun is hot. And while they are still standing guard, let them shut and bar the doors. Appoint guards from among the inhabitants of Jerusalem, some at their guard posts and some in front of their own homes.” The city was wide and large, but the people within it were few, and no houses had been rebuilt.

Lists of Returned Exiles

Then my God put it into my heart to assemble the nobles and the officials and the people to be enrolled by genealogy. And I found the book of the genealogy of (Z)those who came up at the first, and I found written in it:

(AA)These were the people of the province who came up out of the captivity of those exiles whom Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon had carried into exile. They returned to Jerusalem and Judah, each to his town. They came with Zerubbabel, Jeshua, Nehemiah, (AB)Azariah, Raamiah, Nahamani, Mordecai, Bilshan, Mispereth, Bigvai, Nehum, Baanah.

Totals of People and Gifts

66 The whole assembly together was 42,360, 67 besides their male and female servants, of whom there were 7,337. And they had 245 singers, male and female. 68 Their horses were 736, their mules 245,[g] 69 their camels 435, and their donkeys 6,720.

1 Corinthians 8

Food Offered to Idols

Now concerning[a] (A)food offered to idols: we know that (B)“all of us possess knowledge.” This “knowledge” (C)puffs up, (D)but love builds up. (E)If anyone imagines that he knows something, (F)he does not yet know as he ought to know. But if anyone loves God, (G)he is known by God.[b]

Therefore, as to the eating of food offered to idols, we know that (H)“an idol has no real existence,” and that (I)“there is no God but one.” For although there may be (J)so-called gods in heaven or on earth—as indeed there are many “gods” and many “lords”— yet (K)for us there is one God, the Father, (L)from whom are all things and for whom we exist, and (M)one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom are all things and (N)through whom we exist.

However, not all possess this knowledge. But some, (O)through former association with idols, eat food as really offered to an idol, and (P)their conscience, being weak, is defiled. (Q)Food will not commend us to God. We are no worse off if we do not eat, and no better off if we do. But take care (R)that this right of yours does not somehow become a stumbling block (S)to the weak. 10 For if anyone sees you who have knowledge eating[c] in an idol's temple, will he not be encouraged,[d] if his conscience is weak, to eat food offered to idols? 11 And so by your knowledge this weak person is (T)destroyed, the brother for whom Christ died. 12 Thus, sinning against your brothers[e] and (U)wounding their conscience when it is weak, (V)you sin against Christ. 13 Therefore, (W)if food makes my brother stumble, I will never eat meat, lest I make my brother stumble.

Psalm 33:1-11

The Steadfast Love of the Lord

33 (A)Shout for joy in the Lord, O you righteous!
(B)Praise befits the upright.
Give thanks to the Lord with the (C)lyre;
make melody to him with (D)the harp of (E)ten strings!
Sing to him (F)a new song;
play skillfully on the strings, with loud shouts.

For the word of the Lord is upright,
and all his work is done in (G)faithfulness.
He (H)loves righteousness and justice;
(I)the earth is full of the steadfast love of the Lord.

By (J)the word of the Lord the heavens were made,
and by (K)the breath of his mouth all (L)their host.
He gathers the waters of the sea as (M)a heap;
he (N)puts the deeps in storehouses.

Let all the earth fear the Lord;
let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him!
For (O)he spoke, and it came to be;
he commanded, and it stood firm.

10 The Lord (P)brings the counsel of the nations to nothing;
he frustrates the plans of the peoples.
11 (Q)The counsel of the Lord stands forever,
the plans of his heart to all generations.

Proverbs 21:8-10

The way of the guilty (A)is crooked,
but the conduct of the pure is upright.
It is (B)better to live in a corner of the housetop
than in a house shared with a quarrelsome wife.
10 The soul of the wicked desires evil;
his neighbor finds no mercy in his eyes.

Today is the 12th day of August welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I’m Brian it is great to be here with you today as we move our way through the center of the week get ready for the back half. And we are continuing our journey through the book of Nehemiah that we have found ourselves in. And there’s much for us to learn from that book as well as the letter to the Corinthians, first Corinthians that we’re reading. So, let’s dive in and take the next step forward, which is Nehemiah chapter 3 verse 15 through 5 verse 13 today.

Commentary:

Okay. I want to spend some time talking about what we read in Nehemiah today because Nehemiah is just so helpful for us as we discern a calling and a direction and counting the cost and just trying to follow the will of the Lord as we understand where we’re to go and what we’re to do. And, so, I don’t want to miss that. But I want to second to just kind of catch us up in first Corinthians. We kind of passed this section today about, you know, whether you should get married or whether you should not get married or how you should stay how you are however that is and it causes this confusion where people, “like should I be pursuing a spouse? Should I…should my passions all be put into…into the things of the Lord? What should I do?” Because here it is in first Corinthians. And this brings up like a contextualization thing that we find in these letters. And it gets a little prickly, right? Because this is the word of God. And, so, we read this, and we go like, “this is the word of God for all time. And, so, it’s got have some sort of meaning now that it had then.” And, so, if you start discussing, “what…what…what…what might that be?” Well that’s when you get into this territory where…where you get people kind of making accusations like, “you’re just trying to make the Bible say whatever you want the Bible to say and you’re just trying to water down the word of God and…and…and my experience among scholarship, that’s really not the case at all. People are looking for the essence of what was trying to be communicated in context. And, so, when Paul says today like now, concerning the betrothed, so those engaged to be married. I don’t have a command from the Lord but I’m telling you what I think. I think that in view of the present distress, which is what they were going through at that time in the world, specifically in the region of the city of Corinth, where this church and these people were although all of these letters were passed around other churches. So, we can we say at this time, this present distress that he’s talking about. It’s good for person to remain as he is. So, if you’re married don’t try to not be married in. And if you’re free then don’t try to get married. But if you do it’s not a sin. It’s just that it’s gonna introduce all kinds of worldly problems that you have to deal with in your marriage instead of being able to focus wholeheartedly on God or just to quote Paul, “I want you to be free from anxieties. The unmarried man is anxious about the things of the Lord, how to please the Lord. But the married man is anxious about the worldly things, how to please his wife.” And then he goes on to say the reverse that the woman is in the same boat, basically. And, you know, I read is, and I’ve read this, you know…I don’t know… most my life, “the unmarried man is anxious about the things of the Lord and how to please the Lord.” I used to read and think, that’s not what. I’m anxious about the opposite sex. That’s what I’m anxious about. Because the natural order of things id for us to come together, reproduce and create the next coming generation. Like this is biological, this is spiritual, and this is reality. So, how is it that Paul is saying, “just however you are right now, just stay that way.” It’s because Paul’s conviction, and it’s not just Paul’s conviction, like it's…it’s a large part of the conviction in the letters in the New Testament. The conviction is that the world is passing away. In fact, let me just quote Paul. He says, “this is what I mean brothers. The appointed time has grown very short. From now on let those who have wives live as though they had none, and those who mourn, as though they were not mourning, and those who rejoice as though they were not rejoicing, and those who buy as though they had no goods, and those who deal with the world as though they had no dealings with it. For the present form of this world is passing away.” That last sentence is the key one, “for the present form of this world is passing away.” And we could say, even though we are a couple of thousand years in the future from this letter, we still believe that trajectory. “The present form of this world is passing away.” That is our eschatological view, like that this is all going somewhere and what we now know is passing away, but something new will be reborn, right? And, so, it’s like, that’s why we watch the signs of the times. And that’s why we, every generation from that generation to this generation thinks this is the last one. The signs are all lining up. This is the end of it all. This is the big one. Paul thought that but not in the distant future, like imminently. This is one of the things that drove the church forward in its early inception, the imminent arrival of the return of Jesus Christ and the establishment of the kingdom of God. And like I said, like generation after generation forward all the way until today continues to have that thread of urgency because it’s all throughout the New Testament since they believed this was in imminent thing. Then when we read it we are also in the same place. This is an imminent thing which leads us to live our lives accordingly which is appropriate, like with an urgency that there is something going on that we are a part of, and we are carrying that story forward and we may be in this transitional moment. Like, we should live accordingly. That’s living awake and aware. But I don’t think it’s like in any way sacrilegious or anything disrespectful at all to say what Paul thought about this imminent transition and what the earlier…early church writers, early things that we read in the New Testament, what they thought was imminent wasn’t. I mean we’re 2000 years from there. They have all passed on. They are all restored ad whole in God, but this story has continued forward. So, when we read some of these ethical things and this advice that Paul is giving along the way, not just right here, this isn’t just the only instance, it’s all throughout the letters. So, when we come across these things where we’re like, “how would that work? Like how…how…how do I live into that? How do I do that?” Let’s first understand they were trying to figure that out too. They were trying to figure it out against a backdrop in which this transition, this return, this reemergence of Jesus was going to happen any second. And, so, Paul gives advice accordingly. This is what he thinks. And, so, yeah, if that’s the case, if the return of Jesus is imminent, like any day…and I know this gets a little sideways because…because we read the New Testament and then we enter into that same story – any day, maybe today, hopefully today. And I feel that…like hopefully today. But we have 2000 years of history to say, “okay. It wasn’t like in the next month. It wasn’t even in like the next year. And what they…they thought they thought. And it’s not disrespectful to say that what they thought wasn’t exactly accurately right. We’re still here and it’s 2000 years later. So, that’s a fact that’s not, like just disrespectful. And, so, having context for what they were thinking and what they were trying to press into helps us define that place in our own lives to press into. But like suggesting that you shouldn’t be married you should stay how you are, like you shouldn't…you should pretend like nothing’s going on, like you’re not mourning if you are, you’re not sad if you are, you’re not rejoicing…if you’re rejoicing…like you’re just trying to focus here on the immediate task at hand then reading it 2000 years later can be confusing because it’s like, “okay I don’t know exactly what…how I’m supposed to be aimed. And, so, I’m pulled in all kinds of different directions because I don’t know exactly what I’m supposed to be doing.” So, what I’ve learned and what I’ll point out as we continue through our year and as long as I am able to continue to do this however many more years into the future, but what I have learned as a student of the Bible as a student of our faith is that context actually matters a lot trying to peel back the layers over thousands of years of time. And, so, my motives for saying what I’m saying today have nothing to do with like trying to make a theological statement or create some sort of theological position. I’m like completely devoid of that at this point. I’m trying to say context matters when we try to do that work. And as we pass this specific section of first Corinthians where Paul’s saying, “like the whole thing is coming down. Like the whole thing is about to blow up, the end is upon us.” Well then, his advice is strong, true, and absolutely good but like just from a logical perspective, we would have to say if people stopped getting married, for the most part, in order to live and what Paul is saying, then by now 2000 years in the future the faith would not have flourished around the world, it would have died out because people stopped having kids because they stopped coming together in union and the union of marriage. So, you see, context matters. And that was an awful lot of words to say context matters but context matters. And that’s why we look at the context of things as we navigate.

And, so…and, so, now to Nehemiah. So, Nehemiah just helps us understand that there is a process when there is a calling and there are steps that need to be taken as…as we continue to try to live into what we feel like God is leading us to do. And when we watch Nehemiah we see a person acting in collaboration with wisdom really, So, Nehemiah has gotten to Jerusalem, he has cast the vision, the people have caught the vision, they have gotten on board, they are building this wall, which was the dream. This was the thing that Nehemiah wanted to come from Persia all the way back to Jerusalem to do, to protect God’s temple with a wall. And the building of this wall is happening faster than anybody would have suspected. It's…it’s actually happening. And, so, when we have prayed and planned and sought God and launched that’s what we would hope for is that things go faster than we even planned. But it…it’s like the idea that everything’s gonna downhill and we’re just going to be coasting into this new destiny that God’s dropped into our lap is unrealistic. Nehemiah faced all kinds of opposition in our reading today alone. So first was the…the…the outside voices of ridicule. Like, I’m quoting this out of Nehemiah. “What are these feeble Jews doing? Will they restore it for themselves? Will they sacrifice? Will they finish up in a day? Will they revive the stones out of the heaps of rubbish and burned ones at that? Even if fox goes upon it it’ll break down their stone wall”, right? The voice of discouraging ridicule. So, like, when we’ve launched into something and our heart is in it, like we are working tirelessly and all of the risk that’s involved, our heart is invested, and then those of voices of ridicule, like “you think you can actually do something that’s gonna matter.” When those things come against us that can be the end of the dream. And if we think about it, we can probably confine places in our lives where it has been, like that it was just debilitating and we just couldn’t, we lost heart and we couldn’t find it. What Nehemiah does in the face of this ridicule is to cry out to God, to cry out to God, to name it, to say, “look at what they’re doing” and then to keep going, to keep moving forward. That’s what he did, and the wall was soon half of its height. Like it was all the way around and half of its height. Once that happened, then these voices of ridicule got more serious and threatening. And, so, yeah the psychology of it just kind of gets in your head. Like an army is going to swoop down and destroy us at any moment. All of these threats are coming against them. This wall that was easy to ridicule when it was just a pile of burnt up rocks is now actually becoming a wall and people are starting to see that this is going to happen and so they’re trying to intimidate the people to get them to stop building this wall, to come down off that wall and leave it behind. And in our own lives, like man, we reach a point where the dream was awesome but the blood and sweat of trying to make it happen is difficult. And, so, all of these threats that seem to come against us in all kinds of ways can get us off course or to give us…get us to give up completely. What Nehemiah did when he believed that the threats, like he was taking the threats seriously. They weren’t just words of discouragement. This was an actual, intimidating threat. What he did was prepare. Pre…like if you’re gonna attack us, it’s not…you’re not attacking an unprepared person or people. We’ll be ready for you. So, if that’s what you’re gonna do you’re not going to just take us out. We’re gonna stand here and oppose you. And, so, he armed everybody along the wall, even cut the workforce in half so that half the people could be on guard and ready while the other half of the people worked kind of one-handed while they had weapons ready as well. And as fast as the first half of the wall went up and things have ground to a slow process now, because everybody can’t work without fear and wholehearted…like everybody…everybody’s got to be on guard now that can be very discouraging when things begin to slow down. But let’s notice that even though things slowed down significantly…significantly in the book of Nehemiah they still moved forward. Like every stone that got laid was one more stone toward completion. Every brick that was put in the wall was one more brick forward. Like even though things have slowed down they were still going forward. And then problems begin to erupt from within the camp. Like this is the next thing that Nehemiah faces today. These people are building the wall, but they have other obligations and taxes to pay and land to maintain and it’s becoming very, very difficult. And, so, some of the more wealthy people are praying upon the more unfortunate people, even to the point of selling their fellow Hebrew brothers and sisters into slavery, a horrible thing. And Nehemiah finds out about this and he doesn’t just try to work the back channel of politics so that, you know…so that the behavior can continue but at a…in a different way or at a different rate of what…like he calls the whole thing out into the light. Like he drags this issue into the light and names it and confronts the people doing it. And they are ashamed because they have no defense against it. It is what they’re doing. And so often when we are on some sort of mission, man, its when things go sideways within…within the team, right, that…that there are problems in all these kind of back channels and this is where gossip festers. Nehemiah just drug it into the light right away and named it. And, so, in our reading it’s like ridicule, intimidation, threats, trouble from within the camp. These are all obstacles that Nehemiah faced while trying to achieve the dream, the dream that there would be a wall around the city of God, where the temple of God dwelled. And, so, we should, on the one hand, take heart. We’re not the only ones that go through this kind of stuff. This is how it works. But too, we see that however Nehemiah responds, however it is that he…he’s doing everything with wisdom, he’s doing everything ethically but whatever he does, he’s doing it in such a way that forward progress can still happen. Even if it slows to a crawl the thing doesn’t stop. It continues forward however it’s got to be situated so that it can.

Prayer:

Father, there’s a lot to here, there’s a lot here and we invite Your Holy Spirit, as we do every day because it’s You who will lead us into all truth. It’s You who will guide our steps. It’s You that we are depending. In fact You help us to realize how utterly dependent we are upon You when we see the context of the stories in the Bible, when we understand that these are examples and these people all had to wrestle with the same things that we wrestle with as well, that like we’re not just reading the superhero version of the faith where all of these people were just so powerful that they didn’t face any kind of challenges. They’re not exceptions, they’re examples, examples for us in our own lives. And, so, come Holy Spirit we become aware of You. And as we think about these things today, tomorrow, whenever it is You bring them to mind, however it is, that we are listening and that we are seeing where You are leading. We do need You now more than ever and You are not distant, and You are not unavailable. We are just largely unaware. So, give us eyes to see and ears to hear we pray in the mighty name of Jesus. Amen.
