Genesis 50:1 - Exodus 2:10

50 Then Joseph (A)fell on his father's face and wept over him and kissed him. And Joseph commanded his servants the physicians to (B)embalm his father. So the physicians embalmed Israel. Forty days were required for it, for that is how many are required for embalming. And the Egyptians (C)wept for him seventy days.

And when the days of weeping for him were past, Joseph spoke to the household of Pharaoh, saying, (D)“If now I have found favor in your eyes, please speak in the ears of Pharaoh, saying, ‘My father made me swear, saying, “I am about to die: in my tomb (E)that I hewed out for myself in the land of Canaan, there shall you bury me.” Now therefore, let me please go up and bury my father. Then I will return.’” And Pharaoh answered, “Go up, and bury your father, as he made you swear.” So Joseph went up to bury his father. With him went up all the servants of Pharaoh, the elders of his household, and all the elders of the land of Egypt, as well as all the household of Joseph, his brothers, and his father's household. Only their children, their flocks, and their herds were left (F)in the land of Goshen. And there went up with him both chariots and horsemen. It was a very great company. 10 When they came to the threshing floor of Atad, which is beyond the Jordan, (G)they lamented there with a very great and grievous lamentation, and he (H)made a mourning for his father seven days. 11 When the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites, saw the mourning on the threshing floor of Atad, they said, “This is a grievous mourning by the Egyptians.” Therefore the place was named Abel-mizraim;[a] it is beyond the Jordan. 12 Thus his sons did for him as he had commanded them, 13 for (I)his sons carried him to the land of Canaan and buried him in the cave of the field at Machpelah, to the east of Mamre, which Abraham (J)bought with the field from Ephron the Hittite to possess as a burying place. 14 After he had buried his father, Joseph returned to Egypt with his brothers and all who had gone up with him to bury his father.

God's Good Purposes

15 When Joseph's brothers saw that their father was dead, they said, “It may be that Joseph will hate us and pay us back for all the evil that we did to him.” 16 So they sent a message to Joseph, saying, “Your father gave this command before he died: 17 ‘Say to Joseph, “Please forgive the transgression of your brothers and their sin, because they did evil to you.”’ And now, please forgive the transgression of the servants of (K)the God of your father.” Joseph wept when they spoke to him. 18 His brothers also came and (L)fell down before him and said, “Behold, we are your servants.” 19 But Joseph said to them, “Do not fear, for (M)am I in the place of God? 20 As for you, you meant evil against me, but (N)God meant it for good, to bring it about that many people[b] should be kept alive, as they are today. 21 So do not fear; (O)I will provide for you and your little ones.” Thus he comforted them and spoke kindly to them.

The Death of Joseph

22 So Joseph remained in Egypt, he and his father's house. Joseph lived 110 years. 23 And Joseph saw Ephraim's children (P)of the third generation. The (Q)children also of Machir the son of Manasseh were (R)counted as Joseph's own.[c] 24 And Joseph said to his brothers, “I am about to die, but (S)God will visit you and bring you up out of this land to the land (T)that he swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.” 25 Then (U)Joseph made the sons of Israel swear, saying, “God will surely visit you, and you shall carry up my bones from here.” 26 So Joseph died, being 110 years old. They (V)embalmed him, and he was put in a coffin in Egypt.

Israel Increases Greatly in Egypt

(W)These are the names of the sons of Israel who came to Egypt with Jacob, each with his household: Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah, Issachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin, Dan and Naphtali, Gad and Asher. All the descendants of Jacob were (X)seventy persons; Joseph was already in Egypt. Then (Y)Joseph died, and all his brothers and all that generation. (Z)But the people of Israel were fruitful and increased greatly; they multiplied and grew exceedingly strong, so that the land was filled with them.

Pharaoh Oppresses Israel

Now there arose a new king over Egypt, (AA)who did not know Joseph. And he said to his people, “Behold, (AB)the people of Israel are too many and too mighty for us. 10 (AC)Come, (AD)let us deal shrewdly with them, lest they multiply, and, if war breaks out, they join our enemies and fight against us and escape from the land.” 11 Therefore they set taskmasters over them (AE)to afflict them with heavy (AF)burdens. They built for Pharaoh (AG)store cities, Pithom and (AH)Raamses. 12 But the more they were oppressed, the more they multiplied and the more they spread abroad. And the Egyptians were in dread of the people of Israel. 13 So they ruthlessly made the people of Israel (AI)work as slaves 14 and (AJ)made their lives bitter with hard service, in mortar and brick, and in all kinds of work in the field. In all their work they ruthlessly made them work as slaves.

15 Then the king of Egypt said to the Hebrew midwives, one of whom was named Shiphrah and the other Puah, 16 “When you serve as midwife to the Hebrew women and see them on the birthstool, if it is a son, you shall kill him, but if it is a daughter, she shall live.” 17 But the midwives (AK)feared God and did not do as the king of Egypt commanded them, but let the male children live. 18 So the king of Egypt called the midwives and said to them, “Why have you done this, and let the male children live?” 19 The midwives said to Pharaoh, “Because the Hebrew women are not like the Egyptian women, for they are vigorous and give birth before the midwife comes to them.” 20 (AL)So God dealt well with the midwives. And the people multiplied and grew very strong. 21 And because the midwives feared God, (AM)he gave them families. 22 Then Pharaoh commanded all his people, (AN)“Every son that is born to the Hebrews[d] you shall cast into (AO)the Nile, but you shall let every daughter live.”

The Birth of Moses

Now a (AP)man from the house of Levi went and took as his wife a Levite woman. The woman conceived and bore a son, and (AQ)when she saw that he was a fine child, she hid him three months. When she could hide him no longer, she took for him a basket made of bulrushes[e] and daubed it with bitumen and pitch. She put the child in it and placed it among the (AR)reeds by the river bank. And (AS)his sister stood at a distance to know what would be done to him. Now the daughter of Pharaoh came down to bathe at the river, while her young women walked beside the river. She saw the basket among the reeds and sent her servant woman, and she took it. When she opened it, she saw the child, and behold, the baby was crying. She took pity on him and said, “This is one of the Hebrews' children.” Then his sister said to Pharaoh's daughter, “Shall I go and call you a nurse from the Hebrew women to nurse the child for you?” And Pharaoh's daughter said to her, “Go.” So the girl went and called the child's mother. And Pharaoh's daughter said to her, “Take this child away and nurse him for me, and I will give you your wages.” So the woman took the child and nursed him. 10 When the child grew older, she brought him to Pharaoh's daughter, and he became (AT)her son. She named him Moses, “Because,” she said, “I (AU)drew him out of the water.”[f]

Matthew 16:13-17:9

Peter Confesses Jesus as the Christ

13 (A)Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” 14 And they said, “Some say (B)John the Baptist, others say (C)Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” 15 He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” 16 Simon Peter replied, (D)“You are (E)the Christ, (F)the Son of (G)the living God.” 17 And Jesus answered him, (H)“Blessed are you, (I)Simon Bar-Jonah! For (J)flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, (K)but my Father who is in heaven. 18 And I tell you, (L)you are Peter, and (M)on this rock[a] I will build my church, and (N)the gates of (O)hell[b] shall not prevail against it. 19 I will give you (P)the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and (Q)whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed[c] in heaven.” 20 (R)Then he strictly charged the disciples to tell no one that he was the Christ.

Jesus Foretells His Death and Resurrection

21 (S)From that time Jesus began to show his disciples that (T)he must go to Jerusalem and (U)suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on (V)the third day be raised. 22 And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him, saying, “Far be it from you, Lord![d] This shall never happen to you.” 23 But he turned and said to Peter, (W)“Get behind me, Satan! You are (X)a hindrance[e] to me. For you (Y)are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of man.”

Take Up Your Cross and Follow Jesus

24 Then Jesus told his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, let him (Z)deny himself and (AA)take up his cross and follow me. 25 For (AB)whoever would save his life[f] will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. 26 For (AC)what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or (AD)what shall a man give in return for his soul? 27 (AE)For the Son of Man is going to come with (AF)his angels in the glory of his Father, and (AG)then he will repay each person according to what he has done. 28 Truly, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not (AH)taste death (AI)until they see the Son of Man (AJ)coming in his kingdom.”

The Transfiguration

17 (AK)And after six days Jesus took with him (AL)Peter and James, and John his brother, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. And he was (AM)transfigured before them, and (AN)his face shone like the sun, and (AO)his clothes became white as light. And behold, there appeared to them Moses and Elijah, talking with him. And Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good that we are here. If you wish, I will make three tents here, one for you and one for Moses and one for (AP)Elijah.” He was still speaking when, behold, (AQ)a bright cloud overshadowed them, and (AR)a voice from the cloud said, (AS)“This is my beloved Son,[g] with whom I am well pleased; (AT)listen to him.” When (AU)the disciples heard this, (AV)they fell on their faces and were terrified. But Jesus came and (AW)touched them, saying, “Rise, and (AX)have no fear.” And when they lifted up their eyes, they saw no one but Jesus only.

(AY)And as they were coming down the mountain, Jesus commanded them, (AZ)“Tell no one the vision, until the Son of Man is raised from the dead.”

Psalm 21

The King Rejoices in the Lord's Strength

To the choirmaster. A Psalm of David.

21 O Lord, in your (A)strength the king rejoices,
and in your (B)salvation how greatly he exults!
You have (C)given him his heart's desire
and have not withheld the request of his lips. Selah
For you (D)meet him with rich blessings;
you set (E)a crown of (F)fine gold upon his head.
He asked life of you; you (G)gave it to him,
(H)length of days forever and ever.
His (I)glory is great through your salvation;
(J)splendor and majesty you bestow on him.
For you make him most blessed forever;[a]
you make him glad with the (K)joy of your presence.
For the king trusts in the Lord,
and through the steadfast love of the Most High he shall not be (L)moved.

Your hand will (M)find out all your enemies;
your right hand will find out those who hate you.
You will make them as (N)a blazing oven
when you appear.
The Lord will swallow them up in his (O)wrath,
and (P)fire will consume them.
10 You (Q)will destroy their (R)descendants from the earth,
and their offspring from among the children of man.
11 Though they plan evil against you,
though they (S)devise mischief, they will not succeed.
12 For you will put them (T)to flight;
you will (U)aim at their faces with your bows.

13 Be exalted, O Lord, in your strength!
We will sing and praise your power.

Proverbs 5:1-6

Warning Against Adultery

(A)My son, be attentive to my wisdom;
(B)incline your ear to my understanding,
that you may keep (C)discretion,
and your lips may (D)guard knowledge.
For the lips of (E)a forbidden[a] woman drip honey,
and her speech[b] is (F)smoother than oil,
but in the end she is (G)bitter as (H)wormwood,
(I)sharp as (J)a two-edged sword.
Her feet (K)go down to death;
her steps follow the path to[c] Sheol;
she (L)does not ponder the path of life;
her ways wander, and she does not know it.

Genesis 48:1-49:33, Matthew 15:29-16:12, Psalms 20:1-9, Proverbs 4:20-27

Today is the 24th day of January welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I’m Brian it is so awesome, it is truly a privilege to be here with you today as we…we reach out and turn the knob and open up the threshold and step into a brand new shiny sparkly week. It’s all new, it’s all before us. And we remind ourselves of this so often because it’s so important. This is a new week. It’s a new start. We haven’t messed this week up yet and we get to choose how we’re gonna live it. And, so, let’s keep that before us as we step into this perfect new week where nothing has happened yet. And let’s take a first step into this week by going into the Scriptures together. We’ll read from the English Standard Version this week. Genesis chapter 48 and 49 today.

Prayer:

Thank You, Father for Your word. And as we greet this new week, we take heart what You’re saying in the Proverbs, that we should keep our hearts with all vigilance because the springs of life flow from our hearts. This is so important for us. So, we take a moment just to consider that because our hearts have been broken Father. So many times, so many pieces of our hearts have been lost along the way. And yet, as we find in the Scriptures, we are to love You with all of our heart, and we confess we don’t have our hearts. We don’t have them all, they’ve been fragmented. We’re not wholehearted about anything. We’ve been broken. We didn’t achieve this all along, that we should guard our hearts with everything that we have because life springs from it. And yet You are the healer of the brokenhearted. And, so, as we move toward the conclusion of our first month we would like to hold on to this over these coming days, opening our brokenness to You, not hiding it, not trying to protect it, but actually trusting You with it, that…that You are the healer of the brokenhearted. Give us our hearts back that we might be vigilant about them going forward understanding that indeed the issues of life spring forth from our hearts. Heal us God we pray. In the name of Jesus, we ask. Amen.

Genesis 48-49

Jacob Blesses Ephraim and Manasseh

48 After this, Joseph was told, “Behold, your father is ill.” So he took with him his two sons, Manasseh and Ephraim. And it was told to Jacob, “Your son Joseph has come to you.” Then Israel summoned his strength and sat up in bed. And Jacob said to Joseph, (A)“God Almighty[a] appeared to me at (B)Luz in the land of Canaan and blessed me, and said to me, ‘Behold, I will make you fruitful and multiply you, and I will make of you a company of peoples and will give this land to your offspring after you (C)for an everlasting possession.’ And now your (D)two sons, who were born to you in the land of Egypt before I came to you in Egypt, (E)are mine; Ephraim and Manasseh shall be mine, as Reuben and Simeon are. And the children that you fathered after them shall be yours. They shall be called by the name of their brothers in their inheritance. As for me, when I came from Paddan, to my sorrow (F)Rachel died in the land of Canaan on the way, when there was still some distance[b] to go to Ephrath, and I buried her there on the way to Ephrath (that is, Bethlehem).”

When Israel saw Joseph's sons, he said, “Who are these?” Joseph said to his father, (G)“They are my sons, whom God has given me here.” And he said, “Bring them to me, please, that (H)I may bless them.” 10 Now (I)the eyes of Israel were dim with age, so that he could not see. So Joseph brought them near him, (J)and he kissed them and embraced them. 11 And Israel said to Joseph, (K)“I never expected to see your face; and behold, God has let me see your offspring also.” 12 Then Joseph removed them from his knees, and he bowed himself with his face to the earth. 13 And Joseph took them both, Ephraim in his right hand toward Israel's left hand, and Manasseh in his left hand toward Israel's right hand, and brought them near him. 14 (L)And Israel stretched out his right hand and laid it on the head of Ephraim, who was the younger, and his left hand on the head of Manasseh, (M)crossing his hands (for Manasseh was the firstborn). 15 And he blessed Joseph and said,

“The God (N)before whom my fathers Abraham and Isaac walked,
the God who has been my shepherd all my life long to this day,
16 (O)the angel who has (P)redeemed me from all evil, bless the boys;
and in them let (Q)my name be carried on, and the name of my fathers Abraham and Isaac;
and let them (R)grow into a multitude[c] in the midst of the earth.”

17 When Joseph saw that his father (S)laid his right hand on the head of Ephraim, it displeased him, and he took his father's hand to move it from Ephraim's head to Manasseh's head. 18 And Joseph said to his father, “Not this way, my father; since this one is the firstborn, put your right hand on his head.” 19 But his father refused and said, (T)“I know, my son, I know. He also shall become a people, and he also shall be great. Nevertheless, (U)his younger brother shall be greater than he, and his offspring shall become a multitude[d] of nations.” 20 So he blessed them that day, saying,

“By you Israel will pronounce blessings, saying,
(V)‘God make you as Ephraim and as Manasseh.’”

Thus he put Ephraim before Manasseh. 21 Then Israel said to Joseph, “Behold, I am about to die, but (W)God will be with you and will bring you again to the land of your fathers. 22 Moreover, I have given to (X)you rather than to your brothers one mountain slope[e] that I took from the hand of the Amorites with my sword and with my bow.”

Jacob Blesses His Sons

49 (Y)Then Jacob called his sons and said, “Gather yourselves together, that I may tell you what shall happen to you (Z)in days to come.

“Assemble and listen, O sons of Jacob,
listen to Israel your father.

“Reuben, you are (AA)my firstborn,
my might, and the (AB)firstfruits of my strength,
preeminent in dignity and preeminent in power.
Unstable as water, you shall not have preeminence,
because you (AC)went up to your father's bed;
then you defiled it—he went up to my couch!

(AD)“Simeon and Levi are brothers;
weapons (AE)of violence are their swords.
Let my soul come not into their council;
(AF)O my glory, (AG)be not joined to their company.
For in their anger they killed men,
and in their willfulness they (AH)hamstrung oxen.
Cursed be their anger, for it is fierce,
and their wrath, for it is cruel!
I will (AI)divide them in Jacob
and scatter them in Israel.

“Judah, (AJ)your brothers shall praise you;
(AK)your hand shall be on the neck of your enemies;
(AL)your father's sons shall bow down before you.
Judah is (AM)a lion's cub;
from the prey, my son, you have gone up.
(AN)He stooped down; he crouched as a lion
and as a lioness; who dares rouse him?
10 The (AO)scepter shall not depart from Judah,
nor the ruler's staff (AP)from between his feet,
until tribute comes to him;[f]
and to him shall be the obedience of the peoples.
11 Binding his foal to the vine
and his donkey's colt to the choice vine,
he has washed his garments in wine
and his vesture in the blood of grapes.
12 His (AQ)eyes are darker than wine,
and his teeth whiter than milk.

13 (AR)“Zebulun shall dwell at the (AS)shore of the sea;
he shall become a haven for ships,
and his border shall be at Sidon.

14 (AT)“Issachar is a strong donkey,
crouching between the sheepfolds.[g]
15 He saw that a resting place was good,
and that the land was pleasant,
so he bowed his shoulder to bear,
and (AU)became a servant at forced labor.

16 (AV)“Dan shall (AW)judge his people
as one of the tribes of Israel.
17 Dan (AX)shall be a serpent in the way,
a viper by the path,
that bites the horse's heels
so that his rider falls backward.
18 I (AY)wait for your salvation, O Lord.

19 (AZ)“Raiders shall raid (BA)Gad,[h]
but he shall raid at their heels.

20 (BB)“Asher's food shall be rich,
and he shall yield royal delicacies.

21 (BC)“Naphtali is a doe let loose
that bears beautiful fawns.[i]

22 “Joseph is (BD)a fruitful bough,
a fruitful bough by a spring;
his branches run over the wall.[j]
23 The archers (BE)bitterly attacked him,
shot at him, and harassed him severely,
24 yet (BF)his bow remained unmoved;
his arms[k] were made agile
by the hands of the (BG)Mighty One of Jacob
(from there is (BH)the Shepherd,[l] (BI)the Stone of Israel),
25 (BJ)by the God of your father who will help you,
by (BK)the Almighty[m] (BL)who will bless you
with blessings of heaven above,
blessings of the deep that crouches beneath,
blessings of the breasts and of the womb.
26 The blessings of your father
are mighty beyond the blessings of my parents,
up to the bounties (BM)of the everlasting hills.[n]
May they be (BN)on the head of Joseph,
and on the brow of him who was set apart from his brothers.

27 (BO)“Benjamin is a ravenous wolf,
in the morning devouring the prey
and at evening (BP)dividing the spoil.”

Jacob's Death and Burial

28 All these are the twelve tribes of Israel. This is what their father said to them as he blessed them, blessing each with the blessing suitable to him. 29 Then he commanded them and said to them, “I am to be (BQ)gathered to my people; (BR)bury me with my fathers (BS)in the cave that is in the field of Ephron the Hittite, 30 in the cave that is in the field at Machpelah, to the east of Mamre, in the land of Canaan, (BT)which Abraham bought with the field from Ephron the Hittite to possess as a burying place. 31 (BU)There they buried Abraham and Sarah his wife. There (BV)they buried Isaac and Rebekah his wife, and there I buried Leah— 32 the field and the cave that is in it were bought from the Hittites.” 33 When Jacob finished commanding his sons, he drew up his feet into the bed and breathed his last and (BW)was gathered to his people.

Matthew 15:29-16:12

Jesus Heals Many

29 (A)Jesus went on from there and walked (B)beside the Sea of Galilee. And he (C)went up on the mountain and sat down there. 30 And great crowds came to him, bringing with them (D)the lame, the blind, the crippled, the mute, and many others, and they put them at his feet, and he healed them, 31 (E)so that the crowd wondered, when they saw the mute speaking, (F)the crippled healthy, the lame walking, and the blind seeing. And (G)they glorified (H)the God of Israel.

Jesus Feeds the Four Thousand

32 (I)Then Jesus called his disciples to him and said, (J)“I have compassion on the crowd because they have been with me now three days and have nothing to eat. And I am unwilling to send them away hungry, lest they faint on the way.” 33 And the disciples said to him, “Where are we to get enough bread in such a desolate place to feed so great a crowd?” 34 And Jesus said to them, “How many loaves do you have?” They said, (K)“Seven, and a few small fish.” 35 And directing the crowd to sit down on the ground, 36 he took the seven loaves and the fish, and (L)having given thanks he broke them and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds. 37 And (M)they all ate and were satisfied. And they took up seven baskets full of the broken pieces left over. 38 Those who ate were four thousand men, besides women and children. 39 And after sending away the crowds, he got into the boat and went to the region of (N)Magadan.

The Pharisees and Sadducees Demand Signs

16 (O)And the Pharisees and Sadducees came, and (P)to test him (Q)they asked him to show them (R)a sign from heaven. He answered them,[a] (S)“When it is evening, you say, ‘It will be fair weather, for the sky is red.’ And in the morning, ‘It will be stormy today, for the sky is red and threatening.’ (T)You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret (U)the signs of the times. (V)An evil and adulterous generation seeks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah.” So (W)he left them and departed.

The Leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees

When the disciples reached the other side, they had forgotten to bring any bread. Jesus said to them, “Watch and (X)beware of (Y)the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.” And they began discussing it among themselves, saying, “We brought no bread.” But (Z)Jesus, aware of this, said, (AA)“O you of little faith, why are you discussing among yourselves the fact that you have no bread? (AB)Do you not yet perceive? Do you not remember (AC)the five loaves for the five thousand, and how many baskets you gathered? 10 Or (AD)the seven loaves for the four thousand, and how many baskets you gathered? 11 How is it that you fail to understand that I did not speak about bread? (AE)Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.” 12 (AF)Then they understood that he did not tell them to beware of the leaven of bread, but of (AG)the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.

Psalm 20

Trust in the Name of the Lord Our God

To the choirmaster. A Psalm of David.

20 May the Lord (A)answer you in the day of trouble!
May (B)the name of the God of Jacob (C)protect you!
May he send you help from (D)the sanctuary
and give you support from (E)Zion!
May he (F)remember all your offerings
and regard with favor your burnt sacrifices! Selah

May he (G)grant you your heart's desire
and fulfill all your plans!
May we shout for joy over (H)your salvation,
and in the name of our God set up our (I)banners!
May the Lord fulfill all your petitions!

Now I know that the Lord saves his anointed;
he will answer him from his holy heaven
with (J)the saving might of his right hand.
Some trust in (K)chariots and some in (L)horses,
(M)but we trust in the name of the Lord our God.
They collapse and fall,
but we rise and stand upright.

O Lord, save (N)the king!
May he answer us when we call.

Genesis 46:1-47:31, Matthew 15:1-28, Psalms 19:1-14, Proverbs 4:14-19

Today is the 23rd day of January welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I am Brian it is great to be here with you today as we bring to a close another week. And there are 52 of those, but we’ve already move through a couple, actually three. So, look at how time flies. 49 more weeks and we’ll be at the end of another year. And it’s great to know that we we’ll be doing that together as we continue our journey through the Scriptures. So, we’re in the book of Genesis, we have been following along with the story of Joseph. And not to be redundant, but it’s important to kinda remember this family that we are examining because they affect so much of the Bible. Abraham, Isaac, who was Abraham’s son, and Jacob who was Isaac’s son. And Jacob’s name was changed to Israel and then he had children and those of the children of Israel. And this story of Joseph that we’re following along with is one of those sons of Israel. And Jacob or Israel hadn’t seen his son Joseph in decades literally believing that he was dead for decades. And, so, we have kind of a resurrection moment happening. Genesis chapter 46 and 47 today. And we’re reading from the New International Version this week.

Commentary:

Okay. So, as we bring this week to a close, we look back into the book of Genesis, and we’ve been following this Joseph story and finally Joseph and his father Israel or Jacob are reunited, and it is a beautiful beautiful beautiful scene. And, so, the children of Israel 70 in all according to the Scriptures as they start out in Egypt have moved to Egypt. We have some ground to cover, but this is how the children of Israel got to Egypt. And as the Bible has already alluded to, they prospered there. They increase in number is there. They actually grow into a great nation there, but they will also be enslaved there. And we’re gonna spend 400 years in Egypt and then we will meet the next person that we are going to be traveling with and his name will be Moses.

Then we turn into the book of Matthew today and Jesus quotes the prophet Isaiah, “these people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.” That prophecy spoken from Jesus from Isaiah really is the plot of the ministry of Jesus in so many ways. He’s trying to call the truth out in people’s lives and the truth is borne out in how they conduct themselves not in what they say. Because what they say or sad and had led into great hypocrisy and control in all kinds of…well…all kinds of hiding, echoes back from Genesis chapter 3 - naked and ashamed. And that’s how humanity came out of that and hiding ever since, putting a false front out there while the truth remains hidden in the darkness of their hearts. Jesus is calling out the truth. He’s saying like, “let’s unite what you say with who you are not who you pretend to be. Then you can be true. Then you will have eyes to see and ears to hear that the kingdom of heaven is among you now.” So, that can help us understand the trajectory of Jesus ministry, butit should…it’s no less relevant right now. This culture around the world that we live in, the world, the world that we live in is naked and ashamed and hiding. We are all trying to present a perfect version of ourselves, but it is exhausting. Why don’t we just relax and be made perfect for real so that we don’t have to hide naked and ashamed so that we can be true and reveal the kingdom of heaven that is among us.

Prayer:

Jesus, we invite You into that. We’re certainly not done talking about these kinds of things because in the Scriptures You are certainly not done talking about these kinds of things. And, so, as we follow along in the Scriptures it’s like we are following along in Your ministry. We are walking alongside You. We are drinking up every word that You say. Holy Spirit plant these words in the soil of our lives. We want to move toward springtime. Even though that seems a ways away, we want to move toward springtime and see this new life that we are planting right now begin to poke up in our lives so that we might begin to see that we actually are being transformed, that the way we think about things and the way we react to things is changing. Holy Spirit come we pray. And all of this we ask in the name of Jesus. Amen.

Genesis 46-47

Jacob Goes to Egypt

46 So Israel(A) set out with all that was his, and when he reached Beersheba,(B) he offered sacrifices(C) to the God of his father Isaac.(D)

And God spoke to Israel(E) in a vision at night(F) and said, “Jacob! Jacob!”

“Here I am,”(G) he replied.

“I am God, the God of your father,”(H) he said. “Do not be afraid(I) to go down to Egypt,(J) for I will make you into a great nation(K) there.(L) I will go down to Egypt with you, and I will surely bring you back again.(M) And Joseph’s own hand will close your eyes.(N)

Then Jacob left Beersheba,(O) and Israel’s(P) sons took their father Jacob and their children and their wives in the carts(Q) that Pharaoh had sent to transport him. So Jacob and all his offspring went to Egypt,(R) taking with them their livestock and the possessions(S) they had acquired(T) in Canaan. Jacob brought with him to Egypt(U) his sons and grandsons and his daughters and granddaughters—all his offspring.(V)

These are the names of the sons of Israel(W) (Jacob and his descendants) who went to Egypt:

Reuben the firstborn(X) of Jacob.

The sons of Reuben:(Y)

Hanok, Pallu,(Z) Hezron and Karmi.(AA)

10 The sons of Simeon:(AB)

Jemuel,(AC) Jamin, Ohad, Jakin, Zohar(AD) and Shaul the son of a Canaanite woman.

11 The sons of Levi:(AE)

Gershon,(AF) Kohath(AG) and Merari.(AH)

12 The sons of Judah:(AI)

Er,(AJ) Onan,(AK) Shelah, Perez(AL) and Zerah(AM) (but Er and Onan had died in the land of Canaan).(AN)

The sons of Perez:(AO)

Hezron and Hamul.(AP)

13 The sons of Issachar:(AQ)

Tola, Puah,[a](AR) Jashub[b](AS) and Shimron.

14 The sons of Zebulun:(AT)

Sered, Elon and Jahleel.

15 These were the sons Leah bore to Jacob in Paddan Aram,[c](AU) besides his daughter Dinah.(AV) These sons and daughters of his were thirty-three in all.

16 The sons of Gad:(AW)

Zephon,[d](AX) Haggi, Shuni, Ezbon, Eri, Arodi and Areli.

17 The sons of Asher:(AY)

Imnah, Ishvah, Ishvi and Beriah.

Their sister was Serah.

The sons of Beriah:

Heber and Malkiel.

18 These were the children born to Jacob by Zilpah,(AZ) whom Laban had given to his daughter Leah(BA)—sixteen in all.

19 The sons of Jacob’s wife Rachel:(BB)

Joseph and Benjamin.(BC) 20 In Egypt, Manasseh(BD) and Ephraim(BE) were born to Joseph(BF) by Asenath daughter of Potiphera, priest of On.[e](BG)

21 The sons of Benjamin:(BH)

Bela, Beker, Ashbel, Gera, Naaman, Ehi, Rosh, Muppim, Huppim and Ard.(BI)

22 These were the sons of Rachel(BJ) who were born to Jacob—fourteen in all.

23 The son of Dan:(BK)

Hushim.(BL)

24 The sons of Naphtali:(BM)

Jahziel, Guni, Jezer and Shillem.

25 These were the sons born to Jacob by Bilhah,(BN) whom Laban had given to his daughter Rachel(BO)—seven in all.

26 All those who went to Egypt with Jacob—those who were his direct descendants, not counting his sons’ wives—numbered sixty-six persons.(BP) 27 With the two sons[f] who had been born to Joseph in Egypt,(BQ) the members of Jacob’s family, which went to Egypt, were seventy[g] in all.(BR)

28 Now Jacob sent Judah(BS) ahead of him to Joseph to get directions to Goshen.(BT) When they arrived in the region of Goshen, 29 Joseph had his chariot(BU) made ready and went to Goshen to meet his father Israel.(BV) As soon as Joseph appeared before him, he threw his arms around his father[h] and wept(BW) for a long time.(BX)

30 Israel(BY) said to Joseph, “Now I am ready to die, since I have seen for myself that you are still alive.”(BZ)

31 Then Joseph said to his brothers and to his father’s household, “I will go up and speak to Pharaoh and will say to him, ‘My brothers and my father’s household, who were living in the land of Canaan,(CA) have come to me.(CB) 32 The men are shepherds;(CC) they tend livestock,(CD) and they have brought along their flocks and herds and everything they own.’(CE) 33 When Pharaoh calls you in and asks, ‘What is your occupation?’(CF) 34 you should answer, ‘Your servants(CG) have tended livestock from our boyhood on, just as our fathers did.’(CH) Then you will be allowed to settle(CI) in the region of Goshen,(CJ) for all shepherds are detestable to the Egyptians.(CK)

47 Joseph went and told Pharaoh, “My father and brothers, with their flocks and herds and everything they own, have come from the land of Canaan(CL) and are now in Goshen.”(CM) He chose five of his brothers and presented them(CN) before Pharaoh.

Pharaoh asked the brothers, “What is your occupation?”(CO)

“Your servants(CP) are shepherds,(CQ)” they replied to Pharaoh, “just as our fathers were.” They also said to him, “We have come to live here for a while,(CR) because the famine is severe in Canaan(CS) and your servants’ flocks have no pasture.(CT) So now, please let your servants settle in Goshen.”(CU)

Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Your father and your brothers have come to you, and the land of Egypt is before you; settle(CV) your father and your brothers in the best part of the land.(CW) Let them live in Goshen. And if you know of any among them with special ability,(CX) put them in charge of my own livestock.(CY)

Then Joseph brought his father Jacob in and presented him(CZ) before Pharaoh. After Jacob blessed[i] Pharaoh,(DA) Pharaoh asked him, “How old are you?”

And Jacob said to Pharaoh, “The years of my pilgrimage are a hundred and thirty.(DB) My years have been few and difficult,(DC) and they do not equal the years of the pilgrimage of my fathers.(DD) 10 Then Jacob blessed[j] Pharaoh(DE) and went out from his presence.

11 So Joseph settled his father and his brothers in Egypt and gave them property in the best part of the land,(DF) the district of Rameses,(DG) as Pharaoh directed. 12 Joseph also provided his father and his brothers and all his father’s household with food, according to the number of their children.(DH)

Joseph and the Famine

13 There was no food, however, in the whole region because the famine was severe; both Egypt and Canaan wasted away because of the famine.(DI) 14 Joseph collected all the money that was to be found in Egypt and Canaan in payment for the grain they were buying,(DJ) and he brought it to Pharaoh’s palace.(DK) 15 When the money of the people of Egypt and Canaan was gone,(DL) all Egypt came to Joseph(DM) and said, “Give us food. Why should we die before your eyes?(DN) Our money is all gone.”

16 “Then bring your livestock,(DO)” said Joseph. “I will sell you food in exchange for your livestock, since your money is gone.(DP) 17 So they brought their livestock to Joseph, and he gave them food in exchange for their horses,(DQ) their sheep and goats, their cattle and donkeys.(DR) And he brought them through that year with food in exchange for all their livestock.

18 When that year was over, they came to him the following year and said, “We cannot hide from our lord the fact that since our money is gone(DS) and our livestock belongs to you,(DT) there is nothing left for our lord except our bodies and our land. 19 Why should we perish before your eyes(DU)—we and our land as well? Buy us and our land in exchange for food,(DV) and we with our land will be in bondage to Pharaoh.(DW) Give us seed so that we may live and not die,(DX) and that the land may not become desolate.”

20 So Joseph bought all the land in Egypt for Pharaoh. The Egyptians, one and all, sold their fields, because the famine was too severe(DY) for them. The land became Pharaoh’s, 21 and Joseph reduced the people to servitude,[k](DZ) from one end of Egypt to the other. 22 However, he did not buy the land of the priests,(EA) because they received a regular allotment from Pharaoh and had food enough from the allotment(EB) Pharaoh gave them. That is why they did not sell their land.

23 Joseph said to the people, “Now that I have bought you and your land today for Pharaoh, here is seed(EC) for you so you can plant the ground.(ED) 24 But when the crop comes in, give a fifth(EE) of it to Pharaoh. The other four-fifths you may keep as seed for the fields and as food for yourselves and your households and your children.”

25 “You have saved our lives,” they said. “May we find favor in the eyes of our lord;(EF) we will be in bondage to Pharaoh.”(EG)

26 So Joseph established it as a law concerning land in Egypt—still in force today—that a fifth(EH) of the produce belongs to Pharaoh. It was only the land of the priests that did not become Pharaoh’s.(EI)

27 Now the Israelites settled in Egypt in the region of Goshen.(EJ) They acquired property there(EK) and were fruitful and increased greatly in number.(EL)

28 Jacob lived in Egypt(EM) seventeen years, and the years of his life were a hundred and forty-seven.(EN) 29 When the time drew near for Israel(EO) to die,(EP) he called for his son Joseph and said to him, “If I have found favor in your eyes,(EQ) put your hand under my thigh(ER) and promise that you will show me kindness(ES) and faithfulness.(ET) Do not bury me in Egypt, 30 but when I rest with my fathers,(EU) carry me out of Egypt and bury me where they are buried.”(EV)

“I will do as you say,” he said.

31 “Swear to me,”(EW) he said. Then Joseph swore to him,(EX) and Israel(EY) worshiped as he leaned on the top of his staff.[l](EZ)

Matthew 15:1-28

That Which Defiles(A)

15 Then some Pharisees and teachers of the law came to Jesus from Jerusalem and asked, “Why do your disciples break the tradition of the elders? They don’t wash their hands before they eat!”(B)

Jesus replied, “And why do you break the command of God for the sake of your tradition? For God said, ‘Honor your father and mother’[a](C) and ‘Anyone who curses their father or mother is to be put to death.’[b](D) But you say that if anyone declares that what might have been used to help their father or mother is ‘devoted to God,’ they are not to ‘honor their father or mother’ with it. Thus you nullify the word of God for the sake of your tradition. You hypocrites! Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you:

“‘These people honor me with their lips,
but their hearts are far from me.
They worship me in vain;
their teachings are merely human rules.(E)[c](F)

10 Jesus called the crowd to him and said, “Listen and understand. 11 What goes into someone’s mouth does not defile them,(G) but what comes out of their mouth, that is what defiles them.”(H)

12 Then the disciples came to him and asked, “Do you know that the Pharisees were offended when they heard this?”

13 He replied, “Every plant that my heavenly Father has not planted(I) will be pulled up by the roots. 14 Leave them; they are blind guides.[d](J) If the blind lead the blind, both will fall into a pit.”(K)

15 Peter said, “Explain the parable to us.”(L)

16 “Are you still so dull?”(M) Jesus asked them. 17 “Don’t you see that whatever enters the mouth goes into the stomach and then out of the body? 18 But the things that come out of a person’s mouth come from the heart,(N) and these defile them. 19 For out of the heart come evil thoughts—murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander.(O) 20 These are what defile a person;(P) but eating with unwashed hands does not defile them.”

The Faith of a Canaanite Woman(Q)

21 Leaving that place, Jesus withdrew to the region of Tyre and Sidon.(R) 22 A Canaanite woman from that vicinity came to him, crying out, “Lord, Son of David,(S) have mercy on me! My daughter is demon-possessed and suffering terribly.”(T)

23 Jesus did not answer a word. So his disciples came to him and urged him, “Send her away, for she keeps crying out after us.”

24 He answered, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of Israel.”(U)

25 The woman came and knelt before him.(V) “Lord, help me!” she said.

26 He replied, “It is not right to take the children’s bread and toss it to the dogs.”

27 “Yes it is, Lord,” she said. “Even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their master’s table.”

28 Then Jesus said to her, “Woman, you have great faith!(W) Your request is granted.” And her daughter was healed at that moment.

Psalm 19

Psalm 19[a]

For the director of music. A psalm of David.

The heavens(A) declare(B) the glory of God;(C)
the skies(D) proclaim the work of his hands.(E)
Day after day they pour forth speech;
night after night they reveal knowledge.(F)
They have no speech, they use no words;
no sound is heard from them.
Yet their voice[b] goes out into all the earth,
their words to the ends of the world.(G)
In the heavens God has pitched a tent(H) for the sun.(I)
It is like a bridegroom(J) coming out of his chamber,(K)
like a champion(L) rejoicing to run his course.
It rises at one end of the heavens(M)
and makes its circuit to the other;(N)
nothing is deprived of its warmth.

The law of the Lord(O) is perfect,(P)
refreshing the soul.(Q)
The statutes of the Lord are trustworthy,(R)
making wise the simple.(S)
The precepts of the Lord are right,(T)
giving joy(U) to the heart.
The commands of the Lord are radiant,
giving light to the eyes.(V)
The fear of the Lord(W) is pure,
enduring forever.
The decrees of the Lord are firm,
and all of them are righteous.(X)

10 They are more precious than gold,(Y)
than much pure gold;
they are sweeter than honey,(Z)
than honey from the honeycomb.(AA)
11 By them your servant is warned;
in keeping them there is great reward.
12 But who can discern their own errors?
Forgive my hidden faults.(AB)
13 Keep your servant also from willful sins;(AC)
may they not rule over me.(AD)
Then I will be blameless,(AE)
innocent of great transgression.

14 May these words of my mouth and this meditation of my heart
be pleasing(AF) in your sight,
Lord, my Rock(AG) and my Redeemer.(AH)

Proverbs 4:14-19

14 Do not set foot on the path of the wicked
or walk in the way of evildoers.(A)
15 Avoid it, do not travel on it;
turn from it and go on your way.
16 For they cannot rest until they do evil;(B)
they are robbed of sleep till they make someone stumble.
17 They eat the bread of wickedness
and drink the wine of violence.(C)

18 The path of the righteous(D) is like the morning sun,(E)
shining ever brighter till the full light of day.(F)

they do not know what makes them stumble.(H)

They worship me in vain;
their teachings are merely human rules.(E)[c](F)

Day after day they pour forth speech;
night after night they reveal knowledge.(F)
They have no speech, they use no words;
no sound is heard from them.
Yet their voice[b] goes out into all the earth,
their words to the ends of the world.(G)
In the heavens God has pitched a tent(H) for the sun.(I)
It is like a bridegroom(J) coming out of his chamber,(K)
like a champion(L) rejoicing to run his course.
It rises at one end of the heavens(M)
and makes its circuit to the other;(N)
nothing is deprived of its warmth.

The law of the Lord(O) is perfect,(P)
refreshing the soul.(Q)
The statutes of the Lord are trustworthy,(R)
making wise the simple.(S)
The precepts of the Lord are right,(T)
giving joy(U) to the heart.
The commands of the Lord are radiant,
giving light to the eyes.(V)
The fear of the Lord(W) is pure,
enduring forever.
The decrees of the Lord are firm,
and all of them are righteous.(X)

10 They are more precious than gold,(Y)
than much pure gold;
they are sweeter than honey,(Z)
than honey from the honeycomb.(AA)
11 By them your servant is warned;
in keeping them there is great reward.
12 But who can discern their own errors?
Forgive my hidden faults.(AB)
13 Keep your servant also from willful sins;(AC)
may they not rule over me.(AD)
Then I will be blameless,(AE)
innocent of great transgression.

14 May these words of my mouth and this meditation of my heart
be pleasing(AF) in your sight,
Lord, my Rock(AG) and my Redeemer.(AH)

Genesis 44:1-45:28, Matthew 14:13-36, Psalms 18:37-50, Proverbs 4:11-13

Today is the 22nd day of January welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I’m Brian it is wonderful to be here with you today as we come in out of all that’s going on. Maybe this is…we’re starting our day right now. Nothing’s really happened yet. We’re orienting ourselves right here the beginning of the day. Maybe it’s lunch break. Maybe it’s commuting in the car. Maybe it’s commuting on the train. Maybe it’s commuting on a plane. Maybe it’s the end of the day. Maybe you’re on the other side of the world from Tennessee the rolling hills of Tennessee here. It doesn’t matter. We’re all together and no matter when we come in here and push play, we are not alone. Somebody…somebody else is many somebody else’s somewhere in the world is right on the same page. We are always in this together. And, so, it is a joy to be here with you at the Global Campfire for the next step forward, which will lead us back into the book of Genesis, back into the story of Joseph and his brothers who are having lunch Joseph’s house in Egypt. And it’s a very strange situation because the brothers who have bowed down to Joseph just like he dreamed have no idea that this is their brother. So, let’s continue. We’re reading from the New International Version this week. Genesis chapters 44 and 45.

Commentary:

Okay. So, in the book of Genesis today we…we continue the story of Joseph and Joseph finally reveals himself to his brothers after observing them, really putting them through some pretty significant tests where they would sense that they were in pretty deep trouble to say the least. Maybe life as they knew it was over. And Joseph is observing his brothers and testing them because it’s revealing their hearts. It’s forcing the story of Joseph, that has been maybe buried in their consciousness because he’s long gone and dead. It’s forcing it all back up to the surface. And they talk about how Joseph pleaded with them, begged them and how they were being judged. And you can only imagine what’s going on in Joseph’s heart, but in the end, he reveals himself and they are stunned. They are just speechless and stunned. And he tells them something pretty interesting when he sends them off to go get Israel, Jacob, their father, “don’t quarrel on the way.” Like, he just knows the blame game, like the regret of it all. Like the turn of fortunes and how this can all get nasty in the family. He’s just like, “go get dad and bring him back and you’re gonna be taken care of.” And we will continue that story. It was a beautiful moment to see Jacob speechless. Old man believing that his favorite son, his favorite son Joseph was long dead and he…it’s like a resurrection. And, so, you can imagine just how completely speechless this whole situation was. And we’ll continue the story as we continue forward tomorrow.

And then we get into the book of Matthew and let’s talk about faith for a second. Faith is one of these words that we use and it’s like an overarching thing, “like this is my faith. A lot of times when we say something like that what we’re talking about is this is…these are my religious practices, like this is how I have ordered my life around the truth that I believe in. But faith, what exactly are we talking about? When does that kick in? A little bit later in the Bible, we’re gonna here that faith is the substance of things hoped for and the evidence of things not seen. So, in other words, faith allows us to have access to something that we can’t prove. That is actually the point at which we step into faith. Like once we have all of the understanding that we can have, and wisdom challenges us to seek knowledge and to seek understanding. And, so, once we have achieved and sought out all that we can by way of understanding and insight, we still find that there are plenty of things that we cannot prove and there are plenty of things that remain in the realm of mystery. This isn’t just a religious thing. This is life itself. We can go in any direction trying to become a foremost authority on something, whether that be brain surgery or whether that be quantum mechanics or the way we fall in love. At some point we will reach the end of what is known and what can be known and then we will be at the threshold of faith. That’s where faith starts. Faith allows us to move forward with hope in what we cannot see. So, basically if you already have control over something, if you already have all of the understanding of something or if you already possess something you don’t need faith for it. You have it. Faith begins when we have stepped into mystery. So, in our reading from the book of Matthew today, Jesus has fed a large crowd and then He sent His disciples across the lake and he went to pray. He just found out John the Baptist was dead. So, He needed a minute. And He could tell that the winds were against the boat and so He walks on the water and He comes by them and He’s like, “take courage. It’s I. Don’t be afraid.” And they’re like, “it’s a ghost.” And then Peter’s like, “if it’s you tell me come to you on the water.” And Jesus is like, “awesome. Come. Come.” So, Peter gets out of the boat and walks on the water toward Jesus and then he saw the wind and he was afraid and then he began to sink. He was believing in the impossible and achieving the impossible through faith until he looked around for certainties and then he began to sink. And it’s so beautiful. Peter starts to sink and he’s like, “save me Lord. Save me.” And Jesus reaches out and He says, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” I…I love this. I love this because it’s not like a shaming thing here. It’s not like Jesus going like, “well…you could have done it, but you only got a taste. Shame on you. You should’ve had more faith.” And we read these things into the Bible. So, often it’s Jesus saying, “you were doing it. You were doing it. You were walking on the water. Why did you doubt. Why did you doubt?” Can we take that into our day today? Can we understand that all of our attempts to try to control things through facts and understanding are always going to leave us…lead us into the realm of mystery? And that is when faith begins. So, understand that if we pray a prayer like “Lord, increase my faith.” A lot of times what we’re asking for is “Lord, increase my certainty.” If we’re asking God to increase our faith then He will lead us until we have to step out of the boat and we will only ever be stepping out of the boat because that is how we will grow in faith. And when we have faith to step out of the boat and walk in…and walk on water as it were, once we’ve mastered that then we can ask for something even greater because nothing is impossible with God according to Jesus, who is God made flesh, who is the human God. So, let’s carry this into our day and into our weekend and into our life. Let’s just hear Jesus at every juncture when we have this opportunity to step into faith and we know, we know but we don’t know. And every time we start to sink because you start looking around and we start not being able to control the situation anymore. Let’s hear Jesus. “Why did you doubt. You were doing it. You were doing it. Why did you doubt?”

Prayer:

Jesus, we come into that because it's…it’s huge. We cannot please You without faith. Without faith it’s impossible to please You. The Scriptures tell us this. And, so, we need to get wise about faith and not just call our faith our religion, to actually live by faith, which means that we’re gonna have to get comfortable with the uncomfortable. Holy Spirit, come. We reach for You. We take Your hand. We walk by faith forward on this journey inviting You to show us what it’s all about helping us to realize the things we fear are things that we have…that…that we do not need to fear and the things that we see as limitations, they can be overcome. Show us Holy Spirit how to live as we were intended to live, true and by faith we pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.

Check out the Community section. That’s where to get connected on social media. That’s also where the Prayer Wall lives.

Check out the resources that are in the Daily Audio Bible Shop. They are made for this journey. For example, the God of Your Story, which is our latest written resource that we…that we released is basically…it took two full years to write that book. And I thought it was gonna take like six months at the most just because of the repetition of going through the Scriptures for 15 years. But trying to write down the gold of the kinds of commentary, the kinds of things that we talk about, trying to bring context and something that we can walk away from our time around the Global Campfire carrying in our pocket, like something that we can use in our day in the transformation process of our lives, that is always the goal. So, to try and write that down - a very very different process. So, it’s a very different experience. But the God of Your Story is the…the perfect companion to what we’re doing here at the Daily Audio Bible. Whether you’re ever disconnected from the Internet and just want to keep up or whether you, you know, you just want to take the journey deeper, the God of Your Story is a resource for going through the Bible in a year as we do and talking about it. So, check that out.

If you want to partner with the Daily Audio Bible, you can do that dailyaudiobible.com. There is a link on the homepage and I thank you with all my heart for your partnership. We wouldn’t be here if we weren’t doing this together. So, thank you that we are. So, there is a link on the homepage. Community Prayer and Praise:

Hey guys it’s Bridget from New York City and I just wanted to call in to pray. I caught up on a few episodes and I listened to some of the prayer requests and, you know, some of some of your…your requests have just filled up my heart but in…with such an…I have such a grief with you and I'm…I’m with you and I just want you to know that, you know, we serve a God that is amazing , that He chose us, He chose us for this world. Whether we’re in a good place or not, you know, He still wrote our name and said, you know, this is the person that I want to be on earth during this time for such a time as this and He knows our names and although I can’t mention every single person’s name that I want to pray for I do want to tell you all that God hears your prayer requests He hears your heart he knows he knows he knows he knows what you’re feeling what you’re thinking. And I just pray that this year, you know, for 2021 you all will continue to draw near to the Father and draw close to Him and that your hearts will be laid bare before Him and that you would just let Him in completely to…to just ravage your heart and take over every area of your life and that your hope would be so deep in Him and your love so entrenched by His love that no man can take it away not even death not even sickness not even disease nothing and that we would pray in confidence knowing that He hears us. Lord I just lift you up on high Father and I thank you that we can come to you and let you hear our prayers Lord. Help us father to continue to draw near to you Father God as we continue to listen in Jesus’ name I pray. Love you guys.

Hey DABbers it’s your brother from Indiana and I just really wanna encourage people with what I’ve just heard on this podcast from January 16th. Just a prayer the requests. First sister Sharon from Southern California I believe and then somebody before her was crying and then she was trying to in the spirit of this just this empathy felt for one another between brother and sister and I just want to praise God in that. I just think that’s so beautiful. Honestly. She said in the name of Jesus. Okay. So, regarding the name of Jesus she said I know that you can do it because I know you’re gonna do it for me. It was in terms of a relationship struggle. She had that faith. And I want that faith. Don’t we all want that faith? I pray that God would give us more faith like that, that he would grant us more faith. She __ saying thank You for everyday and she…she has plans to be joyous when God answers her prayer. It was just so encouraging. And…and I’m trying to go a little clip further __ from Des Moines…Des Moines regarding Paul’s message, they will come back. And she knows this because she didn’t hear from her son for a decade and he came back. Like just this faith. Like come on. I really want that. I want that. I pray that over all of you. Honestly. And then the singer Candace from Oregon. That was amazing a beautiful prayer. __ on speaking terms. Come on Holy Spirit intercede for this prayer I pray this in Jesus’ name. Thanks God. Thank you.

Hey guys I got a couple prayer things. One, if you could pray for a family that’d be great. They need some help and some healing and some stuff. Also, if you could pray for me. I guess it’s a confession more than anything but like my heart has gotten really hard and really like inward focused since Covid and all this stuff. So I find myself being really angry and like reluctant to help people who really need it. And I know like we gotta be safe you know with Covid and all that. It’s just I’m having a really hard line…I’m like…I’m going way too far to one side and not like not willing to help because I’m so worried about it. I…I’m having a really hard time and I’m not loving as I should, loving people as I should. If you guys could please pray for me that would be great. I’m praying for all you guys I love you guys and alright well praying for us all.

Lord You know all about it, Lord. You know more about it than anyone because You’re the great physician. We ask in You Lord that You heal. We ask in You that You intervene. That You be their breather Lord. As You breathe the breath of life into man You help them to breathe as only You can. Lord we ask that You heal. We ask that You be with them. Father we know…let them know that they’re more than a conqueror and You’re still working miracles. You haven’t changed although the world has changed. But thank You Lord that that that that You have not changed. Lord we give You the glory. We ask You to have Your way. You touch them Lord. You work Your miracles God as only You can, and we will give You the glory and the honor and praise. That’s one thing You’ll never do is never leave us. You’ll be there before we even ask …

Hello, my name is Alyssa and I’m calling from Montana. I was introduced to the Daily Audio Bible just a couple weeks ago on January 6th to be exact. My brother-in-law showed it to my husband and my husband showed it to me and I cannot even tell you how thankful I am. Brian thank you so much. You have no idea how much you’re ministry has been an answer to some of my deepest prayers because I was born totally blind. I don’t read print. And, so, as you can imagine reading the Bible for me is really really challenging. I have to have somebody read it to me and my husband’s often at work. So, I’ve always wanted to do a daily plan and I’ve always wanted to do it on my own. And this app and this Daily Audio Bible is so accessible for me. I used to get envious of people that could just open their bibles and read whenever they wanted and now, I feel like able to just open my Bible every morning and read and listen and just on my own is so easy use. I’m just so thankful. I’m so sad I didn’t find it sooner, but you know what God’s timing is perfect. So, thank you Jesus. And I also want to say I’m thankful for all of you my fellow listeners because it kind of gets lonely sometimes cooped up in this apartment with my sweet 2 year old daughter while my husband is working full time. And it’s nice to know that I’m not the only one listening, that you guys are all in this with me. So, I’m thankful for you and I can’t wait to get to know you better, all of you and spending the rest of the year with you. God bless you. Bye.

Hi this is the blind man from Ohio…and I am really really encouraged. This is my first time calling in. I’ve only been listening to the Daily Audio Bible for a few months and I really love the…this podcast and everything that I listen to. I…I’m really encouraged. I like Brian and everything that he talks about. And God gives him…anoints his lips too let everyone know what God’s word should say and I follow along with him the best I can. I, of course, I’m the blind man. I can’t see. So, my encouragement is Philippians 4:13 I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. And my daily motto is walk through…walk with…walk with through faith and not through site. And God bless everyone. And I follow and I pray with everyone’s prayer requests also. God bless.

The Daily Audio Bible Reading for Friday January 22, 2021 (NIV)

Genesis 44-45

A Silver Cup in a Sack

44 Now Joseph gave these instructions to the steward of his house:(A) “Fill the men’s sacks with as much food as they can carry, and put each man’s silver in the mouth of his sack.(B) Then put my cup,(C) the silver one,(D) in the mouth of the youngest one’s sack, along with the silver for his grain.” And he did as Joseph said.

As morning dawned, the men were sent on their way with their donkeys.(E) They had not gone far from the city when Joseph said to his steward,(F) “Go after those men at once, and when you catch up with them, say to them, ‘Why have you repaid good with evil?(G) Isn’t this the cup(H) my master drinks from and also uses for divination?(I) This is a wicked thing you have done.’”

When he caught up with them, he repeated these words to them. But they said to him, “Why does my lord say such things? Far be it from your servants(J) to do anything like that!(K) We even brought back to you from the land of Canaan(L) the silver(M) we found inside the mouths of our sacks.(N) So why would we steal(O) silver or gold from your master’s house? If any of your servants(P) is found to have it, he will die;(Q) and the rest of us will become my lord’s slaves.(R)

10 “Very well, then,” he said, “let it be as you say. Whoever is found to have it(S) will become my slave;(T) the rest of you will be free from blame.”(U)

11 Each of them quickly lowered his sack to the ground and opened it. 12 Then the steward(V) proceeded to search,(W) beginning with the oldest and ending with the youngest.(X) And the cup was found in Benjamin’s sack.(Y) 13 At this, they tore their clothes.(Z) Then they all loaded their donkeys(AA) and returned to the city.

14 Joseph was still in the house(AB) when Judah(AC) and his brothers came in, and they threw themselves to the ground before him.(AD) 15 Joseph said to them, “What is this you have done?(AE) Don’t you know that a man like me can find things out by divination?(AF)

16 “What can we say to my lord?(AG)” Judah(AH) replied. “What can we say? How can we prove our innocence?(AI) God has uncovered your servants’(AJ) guilt. We are now my lord’s slaves(AK)—we ourselves and the one who was found to have the cup.(AL)

17 But Joseph said, “Far be it from me to do such a thing!(AM) Only the man who was found to have the cup will become my slave.(AN) The rest of you, go back to your father in peace.”(AO)

18 Then Judah(AP) went up to him and said: “Pardon your servant, my lord,(AQ) let me speak a word to my lord. Do not be angry(AR) with your servant, though you are equal to Pharaoh himself. 19 My lord asked his servants,(AS) ‘Do you have a father or a brother?’(AT) 20 And we answered, ‘We have an aged father, and there is a young son born to him in his old age.(AU) His brother is dead,(AV) and he is the only one of his mother’s sons left, and his father loves him.’(AW)

21 “Then you said to your servants,(AX) ‘Bring him down to me so I can see him for myself.’(AY) 22 And we said to my lord,(AZ) ‘The boy cannot leave his father; if he leaves him, his father will die.’(BA) 23 But you told your servants, ‘Unless your youngest brother comes down with you, you will not see my face again.’(BB) 24 When we went back to your servant my father,(BC) we told him what my lord(BD) had said.(BE)

25 “Then our father said, ‘Go back and buy a little more food.’(BF) 26 But we said, ‘We cannot go down. Only if our youngest brother is with us will we go. We cannot see the man’s face unless our youngest brother is with us.’(BG)

27 “Your servant my father(BH) said to us, ‘You know that my wife bore me two sons.(BI) 28 One of them went away from me, and I said, “He has surely been torn to pieces.”(BJ) And I have not seen him since.(BK) 29 If you take this one from me too and harm comes to him, you will bring my gray head down to the grave(BL) in misery.’(BM)

30 “So now, if the boy is not with us when I go back to your servant my father,(BN) and if my father, whose life is closely bound up with the boy’s life,(BO) 31 sees that the boy isn’t there, he will die.(BP) Your servants(BQ) will bring the gray head of our father down to the grave(BR) in sorrow. 32 Your servant guaranteed the boy’s safety to my father. I said, ‘If I do not bring him back to you, I will bear the blame before you, my father, all my life!’(BS)

33 “Now then, please let your servant remain here as my lord’s slave(BT) in place of the boy,(BU) and let the boy return with his brothers. 34 How can I go back to my father if the boy is not with me? No! Do not let me see the misery(BV) that would come on my father.”(BW)

Joseph Makes Himself Known

45 Then Joseph could no longer control himself(BX) before all his attendants, and he cried out, “Have everyone leave my presence!”(BY) So there was no one with Joseph when he made himself known to his brothers. And he wept(BZ) so loudly that the Egyptians heard him, and Pharaoh’s household heard about it.(CA)

Joseph said to his brothers, “I am Joseph! Is my father still living?”(CB) But his brothers were not able to answer him,(CC) because they were terrified at his presence.(CD)

Then Joseph said to his brothers, “Come close to me.”(CE) When they had done so, he said, “I am your brother Joseph, the one you sold into Egypt!(CF) And now, do not be distressed(CG) and do not be angry with yourselves for selling me here,(CH) because it was to save lives that God sent me ahead of you.(CI) For two years now there has been famine(CJ) in the land, and for the next five years there will be no plowing and reaping. But God sent me ahead of you to preserve for you a remnant(CK) on earth and to save your lives by a great deliverance.[a](CL)

“So then, it was not you who sent me here, but God.(CM) He made me father(CN) to Pharaoh, lord of his entire household and ruler of all Egypt.(CO) Now hurry(CP) back to my father and say to him, ‘This is what your son Joseph says: God has made me lord of all Egypt. Come down to me; don’t delay.(CQ) 10 You shall live in the region of Goshen(CR) and be near me—you, your children and grandchildren, your flocks and herds, and all you have.(CS) 11 I will provide for you there,(CT) because five years of famine(CU) are still to come. Otherwise you and your household and all who belong to you will become destitute.’(CV)

12 “You can see for yourselves, and so can my brother Benjamin,(CW) that it is really I who am speaking to you.(CX) 13 Tell my father about all the honor accorded me in Egypt(CY) and about everything you have seen. And bring my father down here quickly.(CZ)

14 Then he threw his arms around his brother Benjamin and wept, and Benjamin(DA) embraced him,(DB) weeping. 15 And he kissed(DC) all his brothers and wept over them.(DD) Afterward his brothers talked with him.(DE)

16 When the news reached Pharaoh’s palace that Joseph’s brothers had come,(DF) Pharaoh and all his officials(DG) were pleased.(DH) 17 Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Tell your brothers, ‘Do this: Load your animals(DI) and return to the land of Canaan,(DJ) 18 and bring your father and your families back to me. I will give you the best of the land of Egypt(DK) and you can enjoy the fat of the land.’(DL)

19 “You are also directed to tell them, ‘Do this: Take some carts(DM) from Egypt for your children and your wives, and get your father and come. 20 Never mind about your belongings,(DN) because the best of all Egypt(DO) will be yours.’”

21 So the sons of Israel did this. Joseph gave them carts,(DP) as Pharaoh had commanded, and he also gave them provisions for their journey.(DQ) 22 To each of them he gave new clothing,(DR) but to Benjamin he gave three hundred shekels[b] of silver and five sets of clothes.(DS) 23 And this is what he sent to his father: ten donkeys(DT) loaded with the best things(DU) of Egypt, and ten female donkeys loaded with grain and bread and other provisions for his journey.(DV) 24 Then he sent his brothers away, and as they were leaving he said to them, “Don’t quarrel on the way!”(DW)

25 So they went up out of Egypt(DX) and came to their father Jacob in the land of Canaan.(DY) 26 They told him, “Joseph is still alive! In fact, he is ruler of all Egypt.”(DZ) Jacob was stunned; he did not believe them.(EA) 27 But when they told him everything Joseph had said to them, and when he saw the carts(EB) Joseph had sent to carry him back, the spirit of their father Jacob revived. 28 And Israel said, “I’m convinced!(EC) My son Joseph is still alive. I will go and see him before I die.”(ED)

Matthew 14:13-36

Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand(A)(B)

13 When Jesus heard what had happened, he withdrew by boat privately to a solitary place. Hearing of this, the crowds followed him on foot from the towns. 14 When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them(C) and healed their sick.(D)

15 As evening approached, the disciples came to him and said, “This is a remote place, and it’s already getting late. Send the crowds away, so they can go to the villages and buy themselves some food.”

16 Jesus replied, “They do not need to go away. You give them something to eat.”

17 “We have here only five loaves(E) of bread and two fish,” they answered.

18 “Bring them here to me,” he said. 19 And he directed the people to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves.(F) Then he gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people. 20 They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over. 21 The number of those who ate was about five thousand men, besides women and children.

Jesus Walks on the Water(G)(H)

22 Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowd. 23 After he had dismissed them, he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray.(I) Later that night, he was there alone, 24 and the boat was already a considerable distance from land, buffeted by the waves because the wind was against it.

25 Shortly before dawn Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. 26 When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost,”(J) they said, and cried out in fear.

27 But Jesus immediately said to them: “Take courage!(K) It is I. Don’t be afraid.”(L)

28 “Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.”

29 “Come,” he said.

Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. 30 But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!”

31 Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,”(M) he said, “why did you doubt?”

32 And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down. 33 Then those who were in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.”(N)

34 When they had crossed over, they landed at Gennesaret. 35 And when the men of that place recognized Jesus, they sent word to all the surrounding country. People brought all their sick to him 36 and begged him to let the sick just touch the edge of his cloak,(O) and all who touched it were healed.

Psalm 18:37-50

37 I pursued my enemies(A) and overtook them;
I did not turn back till they were destroyed.
38 I crushed them(B) so that they could not rise;(C)
they fell beneath my feet.(D)
39 You armed me with strength(E) for battle;
you humbled my adversaries(F) before me.
40 You made my enemies turn their backs(G) in flight,
and I destroyed(H) my foes.
41 They cried for help, but there was no one to save them(I)
to the Lord, but he did not answer.(J)
42 I beat them as fine as windblown dust;(K)
I trampled them[a] like mud in the streets.
43 You have delivered me from the attacks of the people;
you have made me the head of nations.(L)
People I did not know(M) now serve me,
44 foreigners(N) cower before me;
as soon as they hear of me, they obey me.
45 They all lose heart;(O)
they come trembling(P) from their strongholds.(Q)

46 The Lord lives!(R) Praise be to my Rock!(S)
Exalted be God(T) my Savior!(U)
47 He is the God who avenges(V) me,
who subdues nations(W) under me,
48 who saves(X) me from my enemies.(Y)
You exalted me above my foes;
from a violent man(Z) you rescued me.
49 Therefore I will praise you, Lord, among the nations;(AA)
I will sing(AB) the praises of your name.(AC)

50 He gives his king great victories;
he shows unfailing love to his anointed,(AD)

Genesis 42:18-43:34, Matt 13:47-14:12, Ps 18:16-36, Pr 4:7-10

Today is the 21st day of January, welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I am Brian it is wonderful to be here with you today, 21 days into our journey. That’s three weeks. Seems like longer doesn’t it? Just three weeks though and look at all that we have covered in three weeks in the Scriptures, and how much sound wisdom and advice there is for living our lives. So, let’s dive in and take the next step. That will lead us back into the book of Genesis. We’re reading from the New International Version this week and we are covering the story of Joseph, who was trafficked by his brothers into slavery in Egypt and the story made a turn and now Joseph is second in command only to Pharaoh but famine has descended upon the land and his brothers of come from Canaan to get grain and Joseph has spotted them and incarcerated them. And let’s find out what happens next. Genesis chapter 42 verse 18 through 43 verse 34.

Commentary:

Okay. Let’s talk about what’s going on in Egypt in the book of Genesis. Joseph’s brothers have returned because they ran out of food and starvation is upon them. And they brought Benjamin Joseph’s blood brother, like full-blown brother is along with them and Joseph is obviously moved to tears. He hasn’t seen his little brother in so long. And you can imagine the love and the loneliness and all of the years that have transpired between them in the…what has been lost. And then he has his other brothers there who are responsible for that loss. So, it’s interesting what’s going on because Joseph’s heart for his family is apparent to us as we’re reading the story but not apparent to the brothers at all. They don’t even know that this is Joseph. So, Joseph is actually being quite shrewd. He’s kind of drawing this out. He…he hasn’t just revealed himself, “hey, I’m your brother” and then like killed them all for what they did to him or put them in prison or sold them into slavery for several years so they can see what it felt like. He’s not doing those things. He’s observing them. And this is a wise move. This is wisdom in action here. He’s not revealing the whole story. They don’t know who he is. In fact, he’s going through all of the trappings of showing them that he’s not their brother by working through an interpreter and the whole thing because he’s watching them to see where their hearts truly are as opposed to just talk. We will find so often in the Bible that talk is cheap. And don’t we know that from our lives? But your character, your integrity, the way you actually live your life, that’s saying the truth. That’s the story behind the story that Jesus talks about when he’s looking for the truth and revealing the kingdom. So, Joseph is looking for the truth of their hearts, not the truth of the moment or not something that they could say to pacify him, the truth of the matter. And we will obviously get the next installment of this story tomorrow.

Then in the book of Matthew Jesus is continuing with His parables about the kingdom and that’s been going on for the last couple of days where illustration after illustration is given with the intention of revealing the kingdom because this is what Jesus says, “the kingdom of heaven is like” and then He tells the story. So, we have one of those today, “the kingdom of heaven is like a net that was let down into the lake and caught all kinds of fish, and when it was full the fishermen pulled it up on the shore and they sat down and collected the good in the…in the baskets and through the bad away. And this is how it will be at the end of the age” according to Jesus. This is what the kingdom of heaven is like. This is Jesus describing the kingdom of heaven. So, if the kingdom of heaven with this particular illustration is like fishermen out fishing and they fill up their nets and they bring all the fish ashore and then they separate them all, the ones that they can sell and the ones that they can’t they throw them back, then we can learn a couple of things. Like we can learn them from all of these stories that Jesus is telling. One this is happening. It’s not coming. It will continue to come into its fullness but it’s happening, not something we’re waiting for, something we are supposed to be participating in. Second, it’s all happening all at the same time. You have to have eyes to see and ears to hear the kingdom. And once you can see it you realize that it is indeed happening right alongside everything else that’s happening. And in the end, it will all get sorted out. So, we’re not waiting for this great army to come in and just destroy everything and establish a kingdom. We are that kingdom. We are those people and the way we take over is by our love and by our endurance, by our witness, that we stand as a witness to the world there is a better way, a kingdom that we are all invited to be a part of, God’s kingdom, a place where identity is not achieved by comparison, and that we have all that we need and are satisfied knowing that we are children of the most-high God. This is a radical shift. This is a radical shift for the people who are hearing Jesus, but it is a pretty disruptive radical shift for us because ironically, we’re mostly waiting for…we’re mostly waiting for God to do something, when in effect God is sort of waiting for us to do something. And we could look at all the imagery in the book of Revelation for example and go, “like, well no, there is going to be some kind of go cosmic humongous upheaval and battle.” Yeah, this is the very very end when God eradicates evil as a category on earth and anyone who wants to hold onto their evil gets what they want and they also get destroyed because they wouldn’t give up their evil. But what Jesus is talking about to the people who are listening to Him is the same thing He’s talking about when we hear it from the Scriptures. “this thing is happening if we would have eyes to see and ears to hear.” And how do we do that? We’ve been talking about that, seeing what’s going on behind what is presented, looking and observing ourselves for the way we present a false image of who we are in order to be liked. Like developing a personality, a mask that we wear around that’s curated for everybody instead of being true. What if we could all live true? That is the invitation of the gospel of Jesus Christ. That is the way humans were designed to live, without all this baggage that we waste our precious lives on. And the way that we will begin to see what we need to see and hear what we need to hear will be to pursue wisdom. We are watching Jesus teach wisdom. We are watching Joseph use wisdom.

And then from the Proverbs wisdom speaks and I quote, “the beginning of wisdom is this: get wisdom.” So, in other words, set your mind upon it. Pursue it. I continue to quote, “though it cost all you have, get understanding. Cherish her and she will exalt you. Embrace her and she will honor you. She will give you a garland to grace your head and present you with a glorious crown. Listen my son. Accept what I say, and the years of your life will be many.”

Prayer:

Father we acknowledged this, we acknowledge what’s coming up out of the pages of the Bible, we acknowledge and ask, we need this wisdom, and we want to pursue this wisdom and we need the help of Your Holy Spirit to guide us toward this wisdom and we need to learn to stop reacting. When something happens, we need to stop and think about wisdom and then move forward. Show us how to be patient. Show us how to reach for You in all things instead of just trying to be quick and immediate or maybe we get…we’ve gotten offended and so we go to battle so quickly and destroy relationships. And this is a year where we’re amending things. This is a year where we’re allowing You to mend us from within. And, so, we have to slow down. It doesn’t mean we have to slow all of life down. It’s like at warp speed and it could certainly use a little slowing down, but it means that we take a beat, a second, before we start spouting off things in response. We take a beat and consider what wisdom might look like and what wisdom might say. Come Holy Spirit we pray into all of this. We would love nothing more than to focus upon wisdom this year and get to the end of this journey knowing that we have slowly but surely become wise. Come Holy Spirit we pray. In the name of Jesus, we ask. Amen.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Hello everyone. Alexis hello it’s so great to meet you. This is God’s Grace for Japan. And oh man when I heard your message Alexis to the family, I felt you so hard. I remember when I was your age, and I was so isolated from my peer group because I just really wanted to be closer to God and because I loved Jesus, but that alone was enough to make me feel really estranged from what everybody around me was into. And it’s I think probably the world you’re in is probably more difficult than my world was back then and you’re in the right place. And I’m so happy that you’re here. And just the fact that you’re asking for that prayer and that you’re reaching for Him, I know you won’t be disappointed. He says a Luke, “if you then being evil know how to give good gifts to your children how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him.” As long as you keep asking, He will pour it out. Just don’t stop asking. And if you feel stuck you know you have us to call into and ask for prayer. You know, you have so many Big Brothers and sisters here to hold you up and to encourage you. This is such a hard world but I’m already just so grateful that God has inspired this passion in your heart, just this desire to walk in His path. The Daily Audio…the Daily Audio Proverb is also a fantastic small, short tool if you’re looking for wisdom right now in this insanity. I encourage you to utilize that and I’m praying for you. I’m so happy to hear your voice and don’t be afraid. It’s a great journey. Bye bye. God bless everyone.

Hi Daily Audio Bible family it’s James here from the UK and I have just woken up this morning with an incredible sense of God just wanting to speak to I think quite a few people out there within the DAB family to let you know that your prayers are really important to Him. And I think this might be especially for some of those people who are maybe further on in years and are feeling like they’re not important anymore and all the decisions are being made by a younger generation and…and they’re not bringing heard. You’ve got to know that your wisdom and your prayer life and what you’re able to do in supporting younger generations by praying for us is really…is really important. And you are really important, and you are really valued by Jesus. I want to thank you for your prayers. Your prayers over us, over our families when we pray in with our requests, thank you for what you’re able to do. Thank you for your wisdom. And whoever you are who’s maybe thinking right now that you don’t matter that you don’t count, you absolutely do. Amen.

Hello everybody at Daily Audio Bible this is Matt from Michigan. I’m fairly new to Daily Audio Bible but I’ve been reading the daily Bible for quite some time and I’m really enjoying the prayers and…and all the love that you guys share. I’m glad to be at the fire with you. And I wanted to say to All the Treasures from Wyoming, that God definitely does delight in you and I tell my grandchildren he sings over us. When I sing…I’ll hold them and rock them and hold their head on my shoulder tell them then sing songs to them and tell them how much I love them and I tell them, “you know Jesus sings over us. He sings over us. He rejoices over us with singing.” So, He delights in all of us. We’re like flowers to Him. So, God bless you. And I’m so glad to be a part of Daily Audio Bible at the fire. That’s my log for the day. God bless. Bye bye.

Good morning DAB family this is Zainab from London. I’m just calling to say thank you all for your encouraging words for your prayer. You make me feel so welcome and I am part of this family now and I just thank you for all your prayers and encouraging words. I’ve been really really enjoying everything. I’ve been listening to Ezekiel. He’s so funny. I…I…I’ve been…I’ve been following the chronological as well as well as the proverbs and the psalms. So, I’ve been everywhere. I’m just enjoying everything, spending more time trying to know…to get closer and closer to God and I’m so thankful for all your commentary and the way the Bible is explained, especially today Brian explaining what blaspheming means. Oh my god it just throws so much light on what…what it really means and how we can easily blaspheme if we’re not careful. So, thank you so much. I benefited so much today about the act of blaspheming. You know, thank you and I know so many people will benefit from it today. So, I thank you, I thank you so much. I look forward every day to…to join you to join __ up every midnight to wait for, you know…I normally read by my…my…my daily reading at midnight as well as during the day…

Hi Daily Audio Bible this is Beautifully Broken. Hey, I’m just calling to encourage all the new listeners that have joined on for this year. I’m starting my 4th year with Daily Audio Bible with Brian. I’ve listened for three years. And now this year I’m also doing DABC and I’ve added Psalms and Proverbs. None of that was planned. It just happened and it starts to get pretty addictive, which I think is a good addiction. But I just want to encourage new people. I want to say that with my first year those years ago when I started my intent was to go through the Bible in a year and I did it pretty poorly that first year. I fell asleep as I would listen to it. I did it often as rote. A lot of times it was just a check off my list. I missed a lot of days. I got way behind, caught up, didn’t maybe listen to everything. I just want you to know I didn’t give up. I didn’t let that make me feel like, well because I wasn’t doing it well, I just stopped. I think that’s a huge lie of the enemy. Push through, persevere through. Don’t worry if you miss large chunks, just pick up where you were. If you do you feel like you want to go back and…and make that up, do. But just don’t stop. Just keep getting up. It is life changing and the enemy does not want you to succeed at this. So, just keep on keeping on friends. This is so worth it. It is amazing and it will absolutely change your life in ways you cannot imagine.

Hi family this is Victoria from the beautiful rolling Hills of north western Missouri. I called a few weeks ago and asked for prayer for my dear from Joni and her son Thomas who had an accident at work related to his…he’s on the spectrum and there was something going on with his meds. There was an incident, and he harmed a man. And, so, now everything is in court. So, I have an update and some more prayer petitions please. So, the update is that Thomas’s court date was January 5 and Joni and her husband Ron, Thomas’s parents, are being named in the civil case. So, that’s not good I don’t think but what is good is that the judge wanted a couple of weeks to decide what he will rule. So, I think that’s fabulous. Hallelujah for delays when it comes to God and working things. And, so, we have more time. They, let’s see, Thomas’s next court…his trial is January 25 and 26. Some good news. He had a reduction of felonies and misdemeanors and some were even dropped. So, thank you Lord. Joni says she’s in constant prayer or she may fall apart. So, I ask…I ask you family if you’d help me pray that God will…will lead everything here. He will fill the heart, the mind, the Spirit of this judge and all those involved with mercy, understanding, and forgiveness. I pray that everything is led by God and that He moves the heart of the judge with compassion. Thank you, friends. Amen.

The Daily Audio Bible Reading for Thursday January 21, 2021 (NIV)

Genesis 42:18-43:34

18 On the third day, Joseph said to them, “Do this and you will live, for I fear God:(A) 19 If you are honest men,(B) let one of your brothers stay here in prison,(C) while the rest of you go and take grain back for your starving households.(D) 20 But you must bring your youngest brother to me,(E) so that your words may be verified and that you may not die.” This they proceeded to do.

21 They said to one another, “Surely we are being punished because of our brother.(F) We saw how distressed he was when he pleaded with us for his life, but we would not listen; that’s why this distress(G) has come on us.”

22 Reuben replied, “Didn’t I tell you not to sin against the boy?(H) But you wouldn’t listen! Now we must give an accounting(I) for his blood.”(J) 23 They did not realize(K) that Joseph could understand them,(L) since he was using an interpreter.

24 He turned away from them and began to weep,(M) but then came back and spoke to them again. He had Simeon taken from them and bound before their eyes.(N)

25 Joseph gave orders to fill their bags with grain,(O) to put each man’s silver back in his sack,(P) and to give them provisions(Q) for their journey.(R) After this was done for them, 26 they loaded their grain on their donkeys(S) and left.

27 At the place where they stopped for the night one of them opened his sack to get feed for his donkey,(T) and he saw his silver in the mouth of his sack.(U) 28 “My silver has been returned,” he said to his brothers. “Here it is in my sack.”

Their hearts sank(V) and they turned to each other trembling(W) and said, “What is this that God has done to us?”(X)

29 When they came to their father Jacob in the land of Canaan,(Y) they told him all that had happened to them.(Z) They said, 30 “The man who is lord over the land spoke harshly to us(AA) and treated us as though we were spying on the land.(AB) 31 But we said to him, ‘We are honest men; we are not spies.(AC) 32 We were twelve brothers, sons of one father. One is no more, and the youngest is now with our father in Canaan.’(AD)

33 “Then the man who is lord over the land said to us, ‘This is how I will know whether you are honest men: Leave one of your brothers here with me, and take food for your starving households and go.(AE) 34 But bring your youngest brother to me so I will know that you are not spies but honest men.(AF) Then I will give your brother back to you,(AG) and you can trade[a] in the land.(AH)’”

35 As they were emptying their sacks, there in each man’s sack was his pouch of silver!(AI) When they and their father saw the money pouches, they were frightened.(AJ) 36 Their father Jacob said to them, “You have deprived me of my children. Joseph is no more and Simeon is no more,(AK) and now you want to take Benjamin.(AL) Everything is against me!(AM)

37 Then Reuben said to his father, “You may put both of my sons to death if I do not bring him back to you. Entrust him to my care,(AN) and I will bring him back.”(AO)

38 But Jacob said, “My son will not go down there with you; his brother is dead(AP) and he is the only one left. If harm comes to him(AQ) on the journey you are taking, you will bring my gray head down to the grave(AR) in sorrow.(AS)

The Second Journey to Egypt

43 Now the famine was still severe in the land.(AT) So when they had eaten all the grain they had brought from Egypt,(AU) their father said to them, “Go back and buy us a little more food.”(AV)

But Judah(AW) said to him, “The man warned us solemnly, ‘You will not see my face again unless your brother is with you.’(AX) If you will send our brother along with us, we will go down and buy food for you.(AY) But if you will not send him, we will not go down, because the man said to us, ‘You will not see my face again unless your brother is with you.(AZ)’”

Israel(BA) asked, “Why did you bring this trouble(BB) on me by telling the man you had another brother?”

They replied, “The man questioned us closely about ourselves and our family. ‘Is your father still living?’(BC) he asked us. ‘Do you have another brother?’(BD) We simply answered his questions. How were we to know he would say, ‘Bring your brother down here’?”(BE)

Then Judah(BF) said to Israel(BG) his father, “Send the boy along with me and we will go at once, so that we and you and our children may live and not die.(BH) I myself will guarantee his safety; you can hold me personally responsible for him.(BI) If I do not bring him back to you and set him here before you, I will bear the blame(BJ) before you all my life.(BK) 10 As it is, if we had not delayed,(BL) we could have gone and returned twice.”

11 Then their father Israel(BM) said to them, “If it must be, then do this: Put some of the best products(BN) of the land in your bags and take them down to the man as a gift(BO)—a little balm(BP) and a little honey, some spices(BQ) and myrrh,(BR) some pistachio nuts and almonds. 12 Take double the amount(BS) of silver with you, for you must return the silver that was put back into the mouths of your sacks.(BT) Perhaps it was a mistake. 13 Take your brother also and go back to the man at once.(BU) 14 And may God Almighty[b](BV) grant you mercy(BW) before the man so that he will let your other brother and Benjamin come back with you.(BX) As for me, if I am bereaved, I am bereaved.”(BY)

15 So the men took the gifts and double the amount of silver,(BZ) and Benjamin also. They hurried(CA) down to Egypt and presented themselves(CB) to Joseph. 16 When Joseph saw Benjamin(CC) with them, he said to the steward of his house,(CD) “Take these men to my house, slaughter an animal and prepare a meal;(CE) they are to eat with me at noon.”

17 The man did as Joseph told him and took the men to Joseph’s house.(CF) 18 Now the men were frightened(CG) when they were taken to his house.(CH) They thought, “We were brought here because of the silver that was put back into our sacks(CI) the first time. He wants to attack us(CJ) and overpower us and seize us as slaves(CK) and take our donkeys.(CL)

19 So they went up to Joseph’s steward(CM) and spoke to him at the entrance to the house. 20 “We beg your pardon, our lord,” they said, “we came down here the first time to buy food.(CN) 21 But at the place where we stopped for the night we opened our sacks and each of us found his silver—the exact weight—in the mouth of his sack. So we have brought it back with us.(CO) 22 We have also brought additional silver with us to buy food. We don’t know who put our silver in our sacks.”

23 “It’s all right,” he said. “Don’t be afraid. Your God, the God of your father,(CP) has given you treasure in your sacks;(CQ) I received your silver.” Then he brought Simeon out to them.(CR)

24 The steward took the men into Joseph’s house,(CS) gave them water to wash their feet(CT) and provided fodder for their donkeys. 25 They prepared their gifts(CU) for Joseph’s arrival at noon,(CV) because they had heard that they were to eat there.

26 When Joseph came home,(CW) they presented to him the gifts(CX) they had brought into the house, and they bowed down before him to the ground.(CY) 27 He asked them how they were, and then he said, “How is your aged father(CZ) you told me about? Is he still living?”(DA)

28 They replied, “Your servant our father(DB) is still alive and well.” And they bowed down,(DC) prostrating themselves before him.(DD)

29 As he looked about and saw his brother Benjamin, his own mother’s son,(DE) he asked, “Is this your youngest brother, the one you told me about?”(DF) And he said, “God be gracious to you,(DG) my son.” 30 Deeply moved(DH) at the sight of his brother, Joseph hurried out and looked for a place to weep. He went into his private room and wept(DI) there.

31 After he had washed his face, he came out and, controlling himself,(DJ) said, “Serve the food.”(DK)

32 They served him by himself, the brothers by themselves, and the Egyptians who ate with him by themselves, because Egyptians could not eat with Hebrews,(DL) for that is detestable to Egyptians.(DM) 33 The men had been seated before him in the order of their ages, from the firstborn(DN) to the youngest;(DO) and they looked at each other in astonishment. 34 When portions were served to them from Joseph’s table, Benjamin’s portion was five times as much as anyone else’s.(DP) So they feasted(DQ) and drank freely with him.

Matthew 13:47-14:12

The Parable of the Net

47 “Once again, the kingdom of heaven is like(A) a net that was let down into the lake and caught all kinds(B) of fish. 48 When it was full, the fishermen pulled it up on the shore. Then they sat down and collected the good fish in baskets, but threw the bad away. 49 This is how it will be at the end of the age. The angels will come and separate the wicked from the righteous(C) 50 and throw them into the blazing furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.(D)

51 “Have you understood all these things?” Jesus asked.

“Yes,” they replied.

52 He said to them, “Therefore every teacher of the law who has become a disciple in the kingdom of heaven is like the owner of a house who brings out of his storeroom new treasures as well as old.”

A Prophet Without Honor(E)

53 When Jesus had finished these parables,(F) he moved on from there. 54 Coming to his hometown, he began teaching the people in their synagogue,(G) and they were amazed.(H) “Where did this man get this wisdom and these miraculous powers?” they asked. 55 “Isn’t this the carpenter’s son?(I) Isn’t his mother’s(J) name Mary, and aren’t his brothers(K) James, Joseph, Simon and Judas? 56 Aren’t all his sisters with us? Where then did this man get all these things?” 57 And they took offense(L) at him.

But Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his own town and in his own home.”(M)

58 And he did not do many miracles there because of their lack of faith.

John the Baptist Beheaded(N)

14 At that time Herod(O) the tetrarch heard the reports about Jesus,(P) and he said to his attendants, “This is John the Baptist;(Q) he has risen from the dead! That is why miraculous powers are at work in him.”

Now Herod had arrested John and bound him and put him in prison(R) because of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife,(S) for John had been saying to him: “It is not lawful for you to have her.”(T) Herod wanted to kill John, but he was afraid of the people, because they considered John a prophet.(U)

On Herod’s birthday the daughter of Herodias danced for the guests and pleased Herod so much that he promised with an oath to give her whatever she asked. Prompted by her mother, she said, “Give me here on a platter the head of John the Baptist.” The king was distressed, but because of his oaths and his dinner guests, he ordered that her request be granted 10 and had John beheaded(V) in the prison. 11 His head was brought in on a platter and given to the girl, who carried it to her mother. 12 John’s disciples came and took his body and buried it.(W) Then they went and told Jesus.

Psalm 18:16-36

16 He reached down from on high and took hold of me;
he drew me out of deep waters.(A)
17 He rescued me from my powerful enemy,(B)
from my foes, who were too strong for me.(C)
18 They confronted me in the day of my disaster,(D)
but the Lord was my support.(E)
19 He brought me out into a spacious place;(F)
he rescued me because he delighted in me.(G)

20 The Lord has dealt with me according to my righteousness;(H)
according to the cleanness of my hands(I) he has rewarded me.(J)
21 For I have kept the ways of the Lord;(K)
I am not guilty of turning(L) from my God.
22 All his laws are before me;(M)
I have not turned away from his decrees.
23 I have been blameless(N) before him
and have kept myself from sin.
24 The Lord has rewarded me according to my righteousness,(O)
according to the cleanness of my hands in his sight.

25 To the faithful(P) you show yourself faithful,(Q)
to the blameless you show yourself blameless,
26 to the pure(R) you show yourself pure,
but to the devious you show yourself shrewd.(S)
27 You save the humble(T)
but bring low those whose eyes are haughty.(U)
28 You, Lord, keep my lamp(V) burning;
my God turns my darkness into light.(W)
29 With your help(X) I can advance against a troop[a];
with my God I can scale a wall.

30 As for God, his way is perfect:(Y)
The Lord’s word is flawless;(Z)
he shields(AA) all who take refuge(AB) in him.
31 For who is God besides the Lord?(AC)
And who is the Rock(AD) except our God?
32 It is God who arms me with strength(AE)
and keeps my way secure.(AF)
33 He makes my feet like the feet of a deer;(AG)
he causes me to stand on the heights.(AH)
34 He trains my hands for battle;(AI)
my arms can bend a bow of bronze.
35 You make your saving help my shield,
and your right hand sustains(AJ) me;
your help has made me great.
36 You provide a broad path(AK) for my feet,
so that my ankles do not give way.(AL)

Proverbs 4:7-10

The beginning of wisdom is this: Get[a] wisdom.
Though it cost all(A) you have,[b] get understanding.(B)
Cherish her, and she will exalt you;
embrace her, and she will honor you.(C)
She will give you a garland to grace your head
and present you with a glorious crown.(D)

10 Listen, my son,(E) accept what I say,
and the years of your life will be many.(F)
