Ezekiel 31-32

Downfall of Egypt and Assyria

31 In the eleventh year,(A) in the third month, on the first day of the month, the word of the Lord came to me: “Son of man, say to Pharaoh king of Egypt and to his hordes,

‘Who are you like in your greatness?
Think of Assyria, a cedar in Lebanon,(B)
with beautiful branches and shady foliage
and of lofty height.
Its top was among the clouds.[a]
The waters caused it to grow;
the underground springs made it tall,
directing their rivers all around
the place where the tree was planted
and sending their channels
to all the trees of the field.
Therefore the cedar became greater in height
than all the trees of the field.(C)
Its branches multiplied,
and its boughs grew long
as it spread them out
because of the abundant water.(D)
All the birds of the sky
nested in its branches,(E)
and all the animals of the field
gave birth beneath its boughs;
all the great nations lived in its shade.
It was beautiful in its size,
in the length of its limbs,
for its roots extended to abundant water.
The cedars in God’s garden could not eclipse it;(F)
the pine trees couldn’t compare with its branches,
nor could the plane trees match its boughs.
No tree in the garden of God
could compare with it in beauty.

I made it beautiful with its many limbs,
and all the trees of Eden,
which were in God’s garden, envied it.

10 “‘Therefore, this is what the Lord God says: Since it[b] towered high in stature and set its top among the clouds, and it[c] grew proud(G) on account of its height, 11 I determined to hand it over to a ruler of nations;(H) he would surely deal with it. I banished it because of its wickedness. 12 Foreigners, ruthless men from the nations,(I) cut it down and left it lying. Its limbs fell on the mountains and in every valley; its boughs lay broken in all the earth’s ravines. All the peoples of the earth left its shade and abandoned it. 13 All the birds of the sky nested on its fallen trunk, and all the animals of the field were among its boughs. 14 This happened so that no trees planted beside water would become great in height and set their tops among the clouds, and so that no other well-watered trees would reach them in height. For they have all been consigned to death, to the underworld, among the people[d] who descend to the Pit.(J)

15 “‘This is what the Lord God says: I caused grieving on the day the cedar went down to Sheol.(K) I closed off the underground deep because of it:[e] I held back the rivers of the deep, and its abundant water was restrained. I made Lebanon mourn on account of it, and all the trees of the field fainted because of it. 16 I made the nations quake at the sound of its downfall, when I threw it down to Sheol to be with those who descend to the Pit. Then all the trees of Eden,(L) the choice and best of Lebanon, all the well-watered trees, were comforted(M) in the underworld. 17 They too descended with it to Sheol, to those slain by the sword. As its allies[f][g] they had lived in its shade among the nations.

18 “‘Who then are you like in glory and greatness among Eden’s trees? You also will be brought down to the underworld to be with the trees of Eden. You will lie among the uncircumcised with those slain by the sword.(N) This is Pharaoh and all his hordes. This is the declaration of the Lord God.’”

A Lament for Pharaoh

32 In the twelfth year, in the twelfth month, on the first day of the month, the word of the Lord came to me: “Son of man, lament(O) for Pharaoh king of Egypt and say to him,

‘You compare yourself to a lion of the nations,
but[h] you are like a monster[i](P) in the seas.
You thrash about in your rivers,
churn up the waters with your feet,
and muddy the[j] rivers.

“‘This is what the Lord God says:

I will spread my net over you(Q)
with an assembly of many peoples,
and they[k] will haul you up in my net.
I will abandon you on the land
and throw you onto the open field.
I will cause all the birds of the sky
to settle on you
and let the wild creatures of the entire earth
eat their fill of you.(R)
I will put your flesh on the mountains(S)
and fill the valleys with your carcass.
I will drench the land
with the flow of your blood,
even to the mountains;
the ravines will be filled with your gore.
“‘When I snuff you out,
I will cover the heavens
and darken their stars.
I will cover the sun with a cloud,(T)
and the moon will not give its light.
I will darken all the shining lights
in the heavens over you,
and will bring darkness on your land.
This is the declaration of the Lord God.
“‘I will trouble the hearts of many peoples,
when I bring about your destruction
among the nations,
in countries you have not known.
10 I will cause many peoples to be appalled at you,
and their kings will shudder with fear because of you(U)
when I brandish my sword in front of them.
On the day of your downfall
each of them will tremble
every moment(V) for his life.

11 “‘For this is what the Lord God says:

The sword of Babylon’s king
will come against you!
12 I will make your hordes fall
by the swords of warriors,
all of them ruthless men from the nations.(W)
They will ravage Egypt’s pride,
and all its hordes will be destroyed.
13 I will slaughter all its cattle
that are beside many waters.
No human foot will churn them again,
and no cattle hooves will disturb them.(X)
14 Then I will let their waters settle
and will make their rivers flow like oil.
This is the declaration of the Lord God.
15 When I make the land of Egypt a desolation,
so that it is emptied of everything in it,
when I strike down all who live there,
then they will know that I am the Lord.(Y)

16 “‘The daughters of the nations will chant that lament.(Z) They will chant it over Egypt and all its hordes. This is the declaration of the Lord God.’”

Egypt in Sheol

17 In the twelfth year,[l] on the fifteenth day of the month, the word of the Lord came to me: 18 “Son of man, wail over the hordes of Egypt and bring Egypt and the daughters of mighty nations down to the underworld,[m] to be with those who descend to the Pit:(AA)

19 Who do you surpass in loveliness?
Go down and be laid to rest with the uncircumcised!
20 They will fall among those slain by the sword.
A sword is appointed!(AB)
They drag her and all her hordes away.
21 Warrior leaders will speak
from the middle of Sheol
about him[n] and his allies:
‘They have come down;
the uncircumcised lie
slain by the sword.’(AC)

22 “Assyria is there with her whole assembly;
her graves are all around her.
All of them are slain, fallen by the sword.
23 Her graves are set in the deepest regions of the Pit,
and her assembly is all around her burial place.
All of them are slain, fallen by the sword—
those who once spread terror
in the land of the living.

24 “Elam(AD) is there
with all her hordes around her grave.
All of them are slain, fallen by the sword—
those who went down to the underworld uncircumcised,
who once spread their terror
in the land of the living.
They bear their disgrace
with those who descend to the Pit.
25 Among the slain
they prepare a bed for Elam
with all her hordes.
Her graves are all around her.
All of them are uncircumcised,
slain by the sword,
although their terror was once spread
in the land of the living.
They bear their disgrace
with those who descend to the Pit.
They are placed among the slain.

26 “Meshech and Tubal[o](AE) are there,
with all their hordes.
Their graves are all around them.
All of them are uncircumcised, slain by the sword,
although their terror was once spread
in the land of the living.
27 They do not lie down
with the fallen warriors of the uncircumcised,[p]
who went down to Sheol
with their weapons of war,
whose swords were placed under their heads[q]
and their shields[r]
rested on their bones,
although the terror of these warriors
was once in the land of the living.
28 But you will be shattered
and will lie down among the uncircumcised,
with those slain by the sword.(AF)

29 “Edom(AG) is there, her kings and all her princes,
who, despite their strength, have been placed
among those slain by the sword.
They lie down with the uncircumcised,
with those who descend to the Pit.
30 All the leaders of the north(AH)
and all the Sidonians(AI) are there.
They went down in shame with the slain,
despite the terror their strength inspired.
They lie down uncircumcised
with those slain by the sword.
They bear their disgrace
with those who descend to the Pit.

31 “Pharaoh will see them
and be comforted(AJ) over all his hordes—
Pharaoh and his whole army,
slain by the sword.”

This is the declaration of the Lord God.

32 “For I will spread my[s] terror
in the land of the living,
so Pharaoh and all his hordes
will be laid to rest among the uncircumcised,
with those slain by the sword.”

This is the declaration of the Lord God.

Hebrews 12:14-29

Warning against Rejecting God’s Grace

14 Pursue peace with everyone, and holiness(A)—without it no one will see the Lord.(B) 15 Make sure that no one falls short of the grace of God and that no root of bitterness springs up, causing trouble and defiling many.(C) 16 And make sure that there isn’t any immoral[a] or irreverent(D) person like Esau, who sold his birthright in exchange for a single meal.(E) 17 For you know that later, when he wanted to inherit the blessing, he was rejected, even though he sought it with tears, because he didn’t find any opportunity for repentance.(F)

18 For you have not come to what could be touched, to a blazing fire, to darkness, gloom, and storm, 19 to the blast of a trumpet, and the sound of words. Those who heard it begged that not another word be spoken to them, 20 for they could not bear what was commanded: If even an animal touches the mountain, it must be stoned.[b](G) 21 The appearance was so terrifying that Moses said, I am trembling with fear.[c](H) 22 Instead, you have come to Mount Zion, to the city of the living God (the heavenly Jerusalem), to myriads of angels, a festive gathering,(I) 23 to the assembly of the firstborn whose names have been written[d] in heaven, to a Judge, who is God of all, to the spirits of righteous people made perfect,(J) 24 and to Jesus, the mediator(K) of a new covenant,(L) and to the sprinkled blood, which says better things than the blood of Abel.(M)

25 See to it that you do not reject the one who speaks. For if they did not escape when they rejected him who warned them on earth, even less will we if we turn away from him who warns us from heaven.(N) 26 His voice shook the earth at that time, but now he has promised, Yet once more I will shake not only the earth but also the heavens.[e](O) 27 This expression, “Yet once more,” indicates the removal of what can be shaken(P)—that is, created things—so that what is not shaken might remain. 28 Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful. By it, we may serve God acceptably, with reverence and awe,(Q) 29 for our God is a consuming fire.(R)

11/14/2023 DAB Transcript pt2

So, these guys are being marginalized, sidelined, cast-out, mistreated, even persecuted. And if we remember the story of the apostle Paul, he was one of the persecutors. This is who he was after, Jewish Hebrew people who were converting to following Jesus. So, they had, they had considerable opposition. So, on the one hand they were adopting this way of Jesus and following Jesus teachings and believing that this rewired and reframed things, that God was doing something new in the world and this would lead them to eternal life. But on the other hand, it had only made their human physical lives much more difficult to navigate. So, we can begin to see how this all fits together, a lengthy explanation of how Jesus connects to the Hebrew story and fulfills so many prophecies and brings to an end in era, and begins a new one that follows in a tradition of faith in what can’t be seen but is hoped for and in. And then we walked through all of the examples, Hebrew examples by the way of people who are deeply respected by all Hebrew, all practicing Jewish people. And so, now the writer of Hebrews is saying look, those guys believed in a promise and hoped in it and moved forward and they moved the world and our culture forward in the process. But it was very difficult for them. So, we shouldn’t be surprised that moving this forward, that our place in this story is difficult. So, right now we can’t just disappear into the scenery. We can’t just fade. We have to follow our ancestor’s example and move this forward. So, the conclusion, not of the book of Hebrews, but the conclusion of this thought, so then, let’s also run the race that is laid out in front of us since we have such a great cloud of witnesses surrounding us. And that great cloud of witnesses being all of the examples of the ancestors that had gone before them. This hall of faith that we walked down over the last couple of days. Let’s throw off any extra baggage and get rid of the sin that trips us up and fix our eyes on Jesus, faith’s pioneer and perfecter. He endured the cross, ignoring the shame, for the sake of the joy that was laid out in front of Him, and sat down at the right side of God’s throne. We should take great encouragement in that because it gives us the lay of the land for our own lives. It’s not always going to be easy. This isn’t even about making things easy. Which is one of the great misconceptions about this journey of faith that we’re on, and one of the things that deeply estranges us from God because for some reason, we think that everything is supposed to be unopposed and without challenge and easy. And when it’s not, we blame God for it. Now, we can see clues that this is somewhat happening in this time because the writer of Hebrews then begins to talk about discipline. And the way that it’s brought out is look, a parent who doesn’t discipline their children and shape them and guide them, doesn’t love them. And if that’s not happening to a child then the child is an illegitimate child. So, they’re basically saying look, we have to, we have to endure this, we have to move through this and get everything that God has for us that’s in it, into our lives. We’re being shaped, we’re being remade new for this new covenant, things have changed, and we are carrying it forward. So, we to can take the counsel found in the last verses that we read today. So, strengthen your drooping hands and weak knees, make straight paths for your feet, so that if any part is lame, it will be healed, rather than injured more seriously.

Prayer:

So, Father, we have to reframe some things, we actually have to keep reframing them, that the obstacles that we face and the challenges that come our way aren’t purposeless. They are an invitation to grow strong in our faith, which we need to be, and they are assisting us with stripping away all of the things that are going nowhere in our lives. So, come Holy Spirit, strengthen our faith. We embrace You and we cling to You in all things. You are the author and perfecter of our faith. So, come Holy Spirit, we pray in Jesus name. Amen.

Prayer and Encouragements:

Hi, family, this is Guide my Footsteps. I wanted to call in because it’s been one year, November 10th, since a lady named Barbara called in. And previously, the night before her husband passed away. And she called in to thank Brian for the nighttime readings that had helped to ease him in his final moments. And he actually passed with a smile on his face. And then, she proceeded to…to pray for other people. This is just a few hours after her husband had passed and she was obviously grieving. This made a huge impression on me. I’ve been listening for years and years and there’s been people over that time that have really, really made impressions on me in this community. Blind Tony, Victorious Soldier, I could go on and on and on. But thank you so much for being there. Barbara, I hope you’ve had a good year, if you’re listening. And thank you so much.

Hey DAB brothers and sisters. This is Byron out in Florida. I hope you all are doing well. I’m listening to the reading from today in Hebrews and the commentary that Brian is talking about and it’s just resonating with me so deeply about this idea of God doing a new thing to the Hebrews back then. And also, to us. And it’s absolutely true. Although a little while ago I was asking for prayer because I was dealing with my emotional self, and I got a lot of calls back and encouragement which was amazing but people were saying things I wasn’t expecting. Like I’m heading into a period of wilderness and heading into a period of testing. Or I’m heading into a period of deep intimacy. And I had to wrestle with all those things. And it turns out that it’s very much true. It’s amazing what God does. And so, I 100% resonate with what Mariah was saying, I think that, if God doesn’t occasionally stick His finger into our you know, perfect Christian life every now and then, then maybe we really are on the spiritual journey and we need that humility to realize that no matter what kind of experiences that we have or what we’ve been through, that there’s always more. And He’s inviting us. So, Father, we thank you that there’s no end to You. That Your love is deep and that You keep inviting us to go deeper and deeper and deeper. Help us not to get any kind of swelled head about what You show us, Heavenly Father. But instead, let’s just lean more and more to You. That You can be glorified in every single part of our lives. We give You the glory today, in Jesus name. Amen.

Hey DAB fam, this is People on the Water from Indiana. I’m calling in today because, because my counties sheriff, I got an alert that I may be on watch. So, that’s what woke me up this morning, along with my dad. And it was honestly, it was for a second it was like seeing Jesus. You know, I was really shocked. Like, I was like sleeping and that, you’re sleeping, you head doesn’t work. And it was really confusing. But yeah, so I guess pray for my mental health. Pray for my girlfriend’s mental health, as well. And I’ll see you in a little bit. Bye.

Good morning Daily Audio Bible family, this is Wrapped in His Unfailing Love, Dorothy from Destin. And I wanted to call in this morning for a few people that I heard this morning on the 11th of November. First, I’d like to pray for Grace, the passing of your dad, that you believe is imminent. And that you had a wonderful dad. How wonderful and you will get to see him again. So, I pray for your comfort. And I pray for all the things that you prayed for, peaceful passing, no pain and just a wonderful time that you have left with him and comfort. And Lord, we lift up Debbie’s friend Kathy’s husband and this terrible chemo that he’s going through. But Lord, we know that You are the ultimate healer and that You can provide a miracle. You’ve also provided the miracle of friendship and we pray; we praise You for that. And that Debbie will be a great friend and that she is a great friend to Kathy and her husband. Lord, I’d also like to lift up Anonymous and Confused to You. And this is the Scripture I have for you, 1 Timothy 1:7 For God gave us a spirit, not of fear, but of power, love and self-control. And Anonymous, you know the truth and the truth will set you free. And walk in faith. Just start out, start by doing and God will give you the strength that you need to leave this relationship. Lord, we…we bless her. We ask You to give her strength and mercy and grace. I love this family. I pray that you all have a wonderful day. Thank you, Brian, for this wonderful ministry. Bye.

Ezekiel 29:1-30:26, Hebrews 11:32-12:13, Psalm 112:1-10, Proverbs 27:17

Today is the 14th day of November, welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I’m Brian, we’re probably far enough in the year for you to know that I’m Brian. It’s good to be here with you today, and I’m excited to take the next step forward. We’ll move into Ezekiel and then into Hebrews where we will talk about faith. But first, Ezekiel chapter 29 verse 1, to 30 verse 26. We’re reading from the Common English Bible this week.

Commentary:

Alright so, in Hebrews, as I’ve been saying most every day, Hebrews was written to Hebrews. Which is not me saying because it was written to Hebrews it has no meaning for us. It’s to say that’s the context and context is important in the Bible. These are early Jewish believers in Jesus, and they are declaring that God is doing a new thing among the Hebrew people. That Jesus is a part of the Hebrew story, and that God is doing a new thing among the Hebrew people. The old covenant is accomplished, and a new covenant is instituted. But this is not widely accepted at the time or now, among the Hebrew people. So, this letter is to restate what is believed about Jesus in a Hebrew context among the early believers in Jesus. Because they are on the margins. At best, these early Hebrew believers in Jesus, were thought to be just a part of another Jewish sect, sort of like a weird new denomination of Judaism who were following a rabbi name Jesus, who happen to be executed by the Romans.

Ezekiel 29-30

A Prophecy of Egypt’s Ruin

29 In the tenth year, in the tenth month on the twelfth day of the month, the word of the Lord came to me: “Son of man, face Pharaoh king of Egypt and prophesy against him and against all of Egypt.(A) Speak to him and say, ‘This is what the Lord God says:

Look, I am against you, Pharaoh king of Egypt,
the great monster[a](B) lying in the middle of his Nile,
who says, “My Nile is my own;
I made it for myself.”
I will put hooks in your jaws(C)
and make the fish of your streams
cling to your scales.
I will haul you up
from the middle of your Nile,
and all the fish of your streams
will cling to your scales.
I will leave you in the desert,(D)
you and all the fish of your streams.
You will fall on the open ground
and will not be taken away
or gathered for burial.(E)
I have given you
to the wild creatures of the earth
and the birds of the sky as food.(F)

“‘Then all the inhabitants of Egypt
will know that I am the Lord,
for they[b] have been a staff made of reed
to the house of Israel.

When Israel grasped you by the hand,
you splintered,(G) tearing all their shoulders;
when they leaned on you,
you shattered and made all their hips unsteady.[c]

“‘Therefore, this is what the Lord God says: I am going to bring a sword(H) against you and cut off both people and animals from you. The land of Egypt will be a desolate ruin.(I) Then they will know that I am the Lord. Because you[d] said, “The Nile is my own; I made it,” 10 therefore, I am against you and your Nile. I will turn the land of Egypt into ruins, a desolate waste from Migdol to Syene, as far as the border of Cush. 11 No human foot will pass through it, and no animal foot will pass through it.(J) It will be uninhabited for forty years. 12 I will make the land of Egypt a desolation among[e] desolate lands, and its cities will be a desolation among[f] ruined cities(K) for forty years. I will disperse the Egyptians among the nations and scatter them throughout the lands.(L)

13 “‘For this is what the Lord God says: At the end of forty years I will gather the Egyptians from the peoples where they were dispersed.(M) 14 I will restore the fortunes of Egypt and bring them back to the land of Pathros, the land of their origin. There they will be a lowly kingdom. 15 Egypt will be the lowliest of kingdoms and will never again exalt itself over the nations. I will make them so small they cannot rule over the nations. 16 It will never again be an object of trust(N) for the house of Israel, drawing attention to their iniquity of turning to the Egyptians. Then they will know that I am the Lord God.’”

Babylon Receives Egypt as Compensation

17 In the twenty-seventh year, in the first month, on the first day of the month, the word of the Lord came to me: 18 “Son of man, King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon made his army labor strenuously against Tyre.(O) Every head was made bald and every shoulder chafed, but he and his army received no compensation from Tyre for the labor he expended against it. 19 Therefore, this is what the Lord God says: I am going to give the land of Egypt to King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon,(P) and he will carry off its wealth, seizing its spoil and taking its plunder. This will be his army’s compensation. 20 I have given him the land of Egypt as the pay he labored for, since they worked for me.” This is the declaration of the Lord God. 21 “In that day I will cause a horn to sprout(Q) for the house of Israel, and I will enable you to speak out(R) among them. Then they will know that I am the Lord.”

Egypt’s Doom

30 The word of the Lord came to me: “Son of man, prophesy and say, ‘This is what the Lord God says:

Wail,(S) “Woe because of that day!”
For a day is near;
a day belonging to the Lord is near.(T)
It will be a day of clouds,(U)
a time of doom[g] for the nations.
A sword will come against Egypt,
and there will be anguish in Cush
when the slain fall in Egypt,
and its wealth is taken away,
and its foundations are demolished.
Cush, Put, and Lud,(V)
and all the various foreign troops,[h]
plus Libya[i] and the men of the covenant land
will fall by the sword along with them.
This is what the Lord says:
Those who support Egypt will fall,
and its proud strength will collapse.
From Migdol to Syene
they will fall within it by the sword.
This is the declaration of the Lord God.
They will be desolate
among[j] desolate lands,
and their cities will lie
among ruined[k] cities.(W)
They will know that I am the Lord
when I set fire to Egypt(X)
and all its allies are shattered.

On that day, messengers will go out from me in ships(Y) to terrify confident Cush. Anguish will come over them on the day of Egypt’s doom.[l] For indeed it is coming.

10 “‘This is what the Lord God says:

I will put an end to the hordes[m] of Egypt
by the hand of King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon.
11 He along with his people,
ruthless men from the nations,
will be brought in to destroy the land.
They will draw their swords against Egypt
and fill the land with the slain.(Z)
12 I will make the streams dry
and sell the land to evil men.(AA)
I will bring desolation
on the land and everything in it
by the hands of foreigners.
I, the Lord, have spoken.

13 “‘This is what the Lord God says:

I will destroy the worthless idols
and put an end to the false gods in Memphis.(AB)
There will no longer be
a prince from the land of Egypt.
And I will instill fear in that land.
14 I will make Pathros(AC) desolate,
set fire to Zoan,
and execute judgments on Thebes.
15 I will pour out my wrath on Pelusium,
the stronghold of Egypt,
and will wipe out the hordes of Thebes.
16 I will set fire to Egypt;
Pelusium will writhe in anguish,
Thebes will be breached,
and Memphis will face foes in broad daylight.[n]
17 The young men of On[o] and Pi-beseth
will fall by the sword,
and those cities[p] will go into captivity.
18 The day will be dark[q] in Tehaphnehes,
when I break the yoke of Egypt there
and its proud strength
comes to an end in the city.
A cloud(AD) will cover Tehaphnehes,[r]
and its surrounding villages will go into captivity.
19 So I will execute judgments against Egypt,
and they will know that I am the Lord.’”

Pharaoh’s Power Broken

20 In the eleventh year, in the first month, on the seventh day of the month, the word of the Lord came to me: 21 “Son of man, I have broken the arm(AE) of Pharaoh king of Egypt. Look, it has not been bandaged—no medicine has been applied and no splint put on to bandage it so that it can grow strong enough to handle a sword. 22 Therefore, this is what the Lord God says: Look! I am against Pharaoh king of Egypt. I will break his arms, both the strong one and the one already broken, and will make the sword fall from his hand. 23 I will disperse the Egyptians among the nations and scatter them among the countries.(AF) 24 I will strengthen the arms of Babylon’s king and place my sword(AG) in his hand. But I will break the arms of Pharaoh, and he will groan before him as a mortally wounded man. 25 I will strengthen the arms of Babylon’s king, but Pharaoh’s arms will fall. They will know that I am the Lord when I place my sword in the hand of Babylon’s king and he wields it against the land of Egypt. 26 When I disperse the Egyptians among the nations and scatter them among the countries, they will know that I am the Lord.”

Hebrews 11:32-12:13

32 And what more can I say? Time is too short for me to tell about Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah,(A) David, Samuel, and the prophets,(B) 33 who by faith conquered kingdoms,(C) administered justice, obtained promises, shut the mouths of lions,(D) 34 quenched the raging of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, gained strength in weakness, became mighty in battle, and put foreign armies to flight.(E) 35 Women received their dead, raised to life again. Other people were tortured, not accepting release, so that they might gain a better resurrection. 36 Others experienced mockings and scourgings, as well as bonds and imprisonment.(F) 37 They were stoned,[a](G) they were sawed in two, they died by the sword, they wandered about in sheepskins, in goatskins,(H) destitute, afflicted, and mistreated. 38 The world was not worthy of them. They wandered in deserts and on mountains, hiding in caves and holes in the ground.

39 All these were approved through their faith, but they did not receive what was promised, 40 since God had provided something better for us, so that they would not be made perfect without us.(I)

The Call to Endurance

12 Therefore, since we also have such a large cloud of witnesses(J) surrounding us, let us lay aside every hindrance and the sin that so easily ensnares us. Let us run with endurance(K) the race that lies before us, keeping our eyes on Jesus,[b] the pioneer and perfecter[c] of our faith. For the joy that lay before him,[d] he endured the cross, despising the shame,(L) and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

Fatherly Discipline

For consider him who endured such hostility from sinners against himself, so that you won’t grow weary and give up.(M) In struggling against sin, you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood. And you have forgotten the exhortation that addresses you as sons:

My son, do not take the Lord’s discipline lightly
or lose heart when you are reproved by him,
for the Lord disciplines the one he loves
and punishes every son he receives.[e](N)

Endure suffering as discipline: God is dealing with you as sons. For what son is there that a father does not discipline? But if you are without discipline—which all receive[f]—then you are illegitimate children and not sons.(O) Furthermore, we had human fathers discipline us, and we respected them. Shouldn’t we submit even more to the Father of spirits and live?(P) 10 For they disciplined us for a short time based on what seemed good to them, but he does it for our benefit, so that we can share his holiness.(Q) 11 No discipline seems enjoyable at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it yields the peaceful fruit(R) of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.(S)

12 Therefore, strengthen your tired hands and weakened knees,(T) 13 and make straight paths for your feet, so that what is lame may not be dislocated[g] but healed instead.(U)

Ezekiel 27-28

A Lament Over Tyre

27 The word of the Lord came to me. You, son of man, take up a lament over Tyre. Tell Tyre, who dwells at the entrances to the sea as a merchant traveling to many coastlands, this is what the Lord God says.

Tyre, you say, “I am a perfect beauty.”
Your borders were in the heart of the sea.
Your builders perfected your beauty.
They built for you a double-decked ship,[a] made of fir[b] from Senir.
They took a cedar from Lebanon to make a mast for you.
They made your oars of oak from Bashan.
Your planks were made of pine,[c] inlaid with ivory,
from the coasts of Cyprus.[d]
Your sail was brightly decorated linen from Egypt,
which also served as your banner.
Your awning was blue and purple from the coasts of Elishah.
Inhabitants of Sidon and Arvad served as your rowers.
Tyre, your own skilled men, who were with you,
manned your sails.
Skilled veterans from Gebal[e] were on board with you,
serving as your repairmen.
All the ships of the sea and their sailors
were in your harbor to engage in trade with you.
10 Warriors from Persia, Lud,[f] and Put were in your army.
They hung up their shields and helmets among you.
They enhanced your splendor.
11 Men of Arvad and Cilicia were on your walls all around,
and men of Gammad were on your towers.
They hung their quivers all around on your walls.
They made your beauty perfect.

Tyre’s Trade[g]

12 Tarshish traded with you because of your great wealth of every kind. They traded silver, iron, tin, and lead for your exports.

13 Ionia, Tubal, and Meshek also dealt with you. They traded human beings and articles of bronze for your wares.

14 From Beth Togarmah, horses, war horses, and mules were traded to you because of the abundance of your products.

15 The men of Rhodes[h] also dealt with you. Many coastlands were agents of your trade, bringing back ivory tusks and ebony in payment to you.

16 Edom[i] traded with you because of the abundance of your products. They sold turquoise, purple, and finely embroidered cloth, linen, coral, and rubies[j] to you as exports.

17 Judah and the land of Israel also dealt with you. With wheat of Minnith, flour, honey, oil, and balm they bought your wares.

18 Damascus traded with you because of the abundance of your products, because of the abundance of all kinds of wealth. They sold wine of Helbon, wool from Sahar, 19 and wine casks from Izalla[k] as exports. Wrought iron, cassia, and calamus were traded for your goods.

20 Dedan traded to you saddle blankets used for riding. 21 Arabia and all the rulers of Kedar were your agents for trade in lambs, rams, and goats. They were your agents for those. 22 Merchants of Sheba and Ra’amah dealt with you in all kinds of expensive perfumes and in all kinds of precious stones and gold, which they sold you for your merchandise.

23 Haran, Kanneh, and Eden, and dealers from Sheba, Assyria, and Kilmad were your dealers. 24 They were your dealers in elegant clothing, in purple garments and finely embroidered cloth, in carpets with multicolored trim, tightly wound with ropes for your marketplaces.

25 Tarshish ships traveled for you with your merchandise.

Tyre’s Collapse

So you were full and very heavily loaded in the midst of the seas. 26 Your rowers brought you out into deep water. An east wind broke you up in the heart of the sea. 27 Your wealth, your exports and your imports, your sailors and your pilots, your repairmen, and those who bring you imports, all your warriors on board—in fact, all your company who were on board—will sink into the heart of the sea on the day of your collapse.

28 At the sound of the cry of distress from your pilots, the fields on the mainland will quake. 29 All who handle the oars will abandon their ships. The sailors and all the pilots of the sea will stand on shore. 30 They will shout loudly because of you and cry out bitterly. They will throw dirt on their heads and roll in ashes. 31 They will make themselves bald on account of you and put on sackcloth. They will weep bitterly over you, with a bitter lament. 32 In their grief, they will raise a lament over you. They utter this lament over you, “Who is like Tyre, now silenced in the midst of the sea?” 33 When your exports were unloaded from the seas, you satisfied many peoples. By your abundant wealth and your imports, you enriched the kings of the earth. 34 Now you have been broken up by the seas and sunk into the watery depths. Your merchandise and the entire company on board have sunk. 35 All the inhabitants of the coastlands are appalled because of you. Their kings’ hair stands on end. Their faces show distress. 36 Traders among the peoples whistle and hiss at you. You have become horrifying, and you will never exist again, forever.

Tyre’s King Is Expelled From Eden

28 The word of the Lord came to me. Son of man, say to the prince of Tyre that this is what the Lord God says.

Because you became arrogant and said, “I am a god, and I occupy a throne of a god in the heart of the seas,” even though you are a mere man and not a god, and because you regard your wisdom as divine wisdom— You really think you are wiser than Daniel, don’t you? No mystery baffles you. By your wisdom and your shrewdness you have gained wealth for yourself and put gold and silver into your treasuries. By your great skill in trading, you increased your wealth, but you became conceited because of your wealth.

Therefore, this is what the Lord God says. Because you regard your wisdom as divine wisdom, therefore, I am about to bring foreigners against you, the most ruthless of nations. They will unsheathe their swords against your beautiful wisdom, and they will desecrate your radiant splendor. They will cast you down to the pit, and you will die a violent death in the heart of the sea. Will you still claim “I am a god” in the presence of the one who kills you? It will be clear that you are merely a man and not a god when you fall into the hands of those who run you through. 10 You will die a death like that of the uncircumcised by the hand of foreigners, for I have spoken, declares the Lord God.

11 The word of the Lord came to me.

12 Son of man, raise a lament over the king of Tyre. Say to him that this is what the Lord God says.

You were a seal of perfection, full of wisdom, and perfect in beauty. 13 You were in Eden, the garden of God. Every kind of precious stone was covering you: carnelian, diamond, emerald, topaz, onyx, jasper, sapphire, agate, and beryl.[l] Your mountings and your settings were worked in gold. They were prepared on the day you were created.

14 You were a cherub, the anointed guardian. I appointed you. You were on the holy mountain of God, and you walked about in the midst of sparkling stones. 15 Your conduct was blameless from the day you were created until guilt was found in you. 16 In your widespread trade, you practiced much violence and you sinned. I defiled you by banishing you from the mountain of God. I expelled you, you guardian cherub, from among the sparkling stones.

17 You became arrogant because of your beauty, and you corrupted your wisdom together with your splendor. So I hurled you down to the earth and set you in front of kings who gloated over you. 18 By your many sins during your unscrupulous trade, you defiled your sanctuaries. So I made fire break out from your midst, and it devoured you. I reduced you to ashes on the ground in the sight of all who were watching. 19 All those among the people who knew you are appalled at you. You have become horrifying, and you will never exist again, forever.

An Oracle Against Sidon

20 The word of the Lord came to me.

21 Son of man, set your face toward Sidon, and prophesy against her. 22 Say that this is what the Lord God says.

I am against you, Sidon. I will display my glory in your midst, and they will know that I am the Lord, when I inflict punishments on you and display my holiness in you. 23 I will release the plague in her. There will be blood in her streets, and the slain will fall in her midst when the sword comes against her from all sides. Then they will know that I am the Lord.

Hope for Israel

24 Never again will the house of Israel be subjected to those who deride them, who are all around them like prickly briers or painful thorns. Then they will know that I am the Lord God.

25 This is what the Lord God says. When I gather the house of Israel from the peoples where they have been scattered, I will display my holiness through them in the sight of the nations. Then they will live on their own land, which I gave to my servant Jacob. 26 They will live on it in security. They will build houses and plant vineyards. They will live on it in security when I inflict judgments upon all those around them who despise them. Then they will know that I am the Lord, their God.

  2. Ezekiel 27:5 The identification of some of the types of trees is uncertain.
  3. Ezekiel 27:6 The translation pine follows a different word division than that which occurs in the main Hebrew text, which has the reading daughter of Assyria.

  5. Ezekiel 27:9 Also called Byblos
  6. Ezekiel 27:10 Or Lydia
  7. Ezekiel 27:12 The meaning of many of the terms in verses 12-15 is uncertain.
  8. Ezekiel 27:15 The Greek text reads Rhodes, a Mediterranean island. The Hebrew reads Dedan, a desert oasis in Arabia, which is dealt with in verse 20.
  9. Ezekiel 27:16 The translation Edom follows some Hebrew manuscripts and ancient versions. Most Hebrew manuscripts read Aram, but verse 18 deals with that country under the heading Damascus, and the commodities in this verse fit better with Edom.
  10. Ezekiel 27:16 The identification of some of the precious items is uncertain.
  11. Ezekiel 27:19 In the translation, words from the beginning of verse 19 complete the sentence of verse 18. The Hebrew text at the beginning of verse 19 seems to read Dan and Javan paid for your wares, traversing back and forth, a sentence which does not fit this context.
  12. Ezekiel 28:13 The identification of some of the gemstones is uncertain.

Hebrews 11:17-31

17 By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered Isaac. This man, who received the promises, was ready to offer his only son, 18 about whom it was said, “Through Isaac your offspring will be traced.”[a] 19 He reasoned that God also had the ability to raise him from the dead, and in a figurative sense, Abraham did receive him back from the dead.

20 By faith Isaac also blessed Jacob and Esau about things that were going to happen.

21 By faith Jacob, when he was dying, blessed each of Joseph’s sons and worshipped as he leaned on the top of his staff.

22 By faith Joseph, as he neared the end of his life, mentioned[b] the Exodus of the sons of Israel and gave instructions about his bones.

23 By faith Moses was hidden by his parents for three months after he was born, because they saw he was a special child, and they were not afraid of the king’s order.

24 By faith Moses refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter when he grew up. 25 He chose to be mistreated with God’s people rather than enjoy sin for a little while. 26 He considered disgrace for the sake of Christ as greater wealth than the treasures of Egypt, because he was looking ahead to his reward.

27 By faith he left Egypt without fearing the king’s wrath, because he persevered as one who sees him who is invisible.

28 By faith he celebrated the Passover and the sprinkling of blood, so that the destroyer of the firstborn would not strike them down.

29 By faith they passed through the Red Sea, as if going through on dry ground. When the Egyptians tried it, they were drowned.

30 By faith the walls of Jericho fell after the people marched around them for seven days.

31 By faith Rahab the prostitute did not perish with the unbelievers, because she welcomed the spies in peace.

Praise the Lord.[a]

I will thank the Lord with all my heart
in the assembly of the upright and in the congregation.

God’s Works

Great are the deeds of the Lord.
They are studied by all who delight in them.
Glorious and majestic is his work,
and his righteousness stands forever.
He has set up a memorial to his wonders.
Gracious and compassionate is the Lord.
He gives food to those who fear him.
He remembers his covenant forever.
He has declared the power of his deeds to his people,
to give them the nations as their possession.
The works of his hands are truth and justice.

God’s Word

All his precepts are trustworthy,
steadfast forever and ever,
done in truth and uprightness.
He sent redemption for his people.
He commanded his covenant forever.

Ezekiel 24:1-26:21, Hebrews 11:1-16, Psalm 110:1-7, Proverbs 27:14

Today is the 12th day of November, welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I’m Brian, it’s great to be here with you today and every day. Of course, here we are at the sparkly shiny threshold of a brand-new week. Looking at the week, we will continue to journey our way through the book of Ezekiel. And in the New Testament, we will conclude this week, the book of Hebrews, and move forward into James. And we will read from the Common English Bible this week. So, let’s dive in, Ezekiel chapter 24 verse 1, through 26 verse 21.

Commentary:

Okay, in our reading from Psalms today, we read Psalm 110, which refers to Melchizedek. One of the two only references to Melchizedek in the Old Testament, and we talked about that at length, when we began the book of Hebrews. So, I’m just pointing that out.

In the book of Hebrews, we turn the corner and begin to move into the next piece of what is being laid out in Hebrews. So, since we began Hebrews, we’ve been examining from a Hebrew context, a Jewish context, the sacrificial system, the way to get to God, and to be absolved of sin. And the writer of Hebrews is saying that in Jesus death, that system is completed, and is no longer necessary. We now have a high priest in heaven, a new covenant has been instituted, we can now ourselves go into the holy of holies. So, in other words, we can now ourselves as individuals stand clean and righteous before God and enter His presence ourselves. And we’ve talked about what a monumental paradigm shift that was for the Hebrews that this was written to. Today, we begin to talk about what enables all of that. The reality that we have to enter and live from within, in order for this to become true, and that reality is called faith. So, as we turn the corner and begin Hebrews chapter 11, we’re greeted with that, faith is the reality of what we hope for, the proof of what we don’t see. And then we spent the rest of our time in Hebrews today seeing examples of this from the Scriptures. And we started at the beginning and began to work our way forward. And we will continue with those examples as we read forward, as we go forward tomorrow. Some scholars call this the hall of faith, that the hall of faith in the Bible because it’s example, after example of people who lived by faith in order to move into a reality that would otherwise be impossible. And we should enjoy this because it’s kind of a fast motion move through a number of the stories that we’ve encountered as we’ve move through the Bible this year. But it also shows us this common thread, faith is a necessary part of our humanity, of our journey, and certainly is the rocket fuel of our relationship with God. So, we should enjoy ourselves as we move through these examples. But then Hebrews will lead us to a place where we realize okay, the examples are wonderful, but I can’t move into this on someone else’s faith, it’s going to come down to some choices and decisions that I have to make. And we’ll get to that over the next couple of days.

Prayer:

And so, Father, the Scriptures tell us that it’s impossible to please You without faith, and so now, as we begin to explore faith from the book of Hebrews, we invite Your Holy Spirit to strengthen and increase our faith in You, as we look at these examples of people who had faith against all odds, faith in a reality that they could not see, faith in You and You alone. Come Holy Spirit and make this a reality in our lives. We ask in Jesus name. Amen.

Prayer and Encouragements:

DAB family, it’s KC the Single-Minded Plumber. I love you guys. It’s another beautiful sunny day in sunny aloha. I hope all you guys are having and awesome day and enjoying yourselves. Bless all of you. I wanted to call in, in particular to thank a few people in the DAB community. I know we have some law enforcement officers in our community. And it’s inspiring, law enforcement officers. I want to thank you, specifically. I grew up with a single mother on welfare in the poorest neighborhoods we could find. And a lot of my father figures were law enforcement officers. Anybody, any male figures in my family were on drugs or selling drugs. So, law enforcement officers made a big difference in my life. They taught me right from wrong. They let me know when I was doing something wrong. They brought me home and kept me safe a lot of nights. So, you never know when you’re in the community, what a difference and what an impact you make on…on the people you meet. God bless you guys. Thank you for doing what you do. You’re appreciated, you really are. Even if the people who you’re helping, don’t show it at the time, and I didn’t. But a lot of the law enforcement officers I knew when I was a child, still wonder how I’m doing. And reach out to me and hope I’m doing okay. So, I just want to say, I love you. God bless you. Bless your families. Bless everything you do. Byyyyeee

Hey fam, it’s Spark. I wanted to call. I was listening to community prayer. And I heard a call from Joe. Hey dude, I’m so glad that you’re on here. You were talking about your struggles, childhood and things like that. And how you can be bitter about that. But I’m gonna tell you right now, that’s okay. You’re seeing things that happened that changed your mind. And it’s different to listen to Proverbs, hard to listen to it sometimes. But I want to tell you dude, I want to urge you to get where I was. So, when I started listening to this, I was just so exhausted. I was exhausted with being frustrated, angry, down. Man, I’ve…I’ve had some upside downs in my life. I always tell you that. You know, where you’re left on your backside and can’t really make sense of all of it. And keep digging right now. And there’s gonna be a point, when you say you have trouble listening, I will tell you what God is, God is taking you right now, and He’s putting you in this situation, not to listen to His word out of fear or out of shame of things that have happened to you. Right now, He’s looking at you and telling you, you can be brand new. And here is my promise. And when that clicked, where I realized that everything that had beat the fire out of me. I didn’t have to take it anymore. This is a promise you’re listening to. And this is God telling you how much He loves you. And I started reading it like a nerd. I love you dude. Hang in there.

Hey DAB family, it’s Abba’s Daughter Sadie M. I’m listening to today’s reading, November 7th. And James from Nebraska, I think I got your moniker right, your wife Mary, you found on the floor after a couple hours of probably being unconscious after a fall. And I just, I wanna take her to the throne. You said it’s not looking good. And I just wanna take her to our Jehovah Raffa, our healer. I believe that He can heal. That’s what it takes for miracles to happen is belief and faith in our mighty God. So, let’s go to the throne for Mary. Abba Father, we come before You today in awe of Your power. We come before You today in awe of all the things You have done, miracle, miracle, miracle. Both in a time when Jesus was on earth, among us and even beyond that time. Lord, You have done so many miracles for so many. And so, we ask today that You would heal Mary. That You would heal her in such a way that the only way she would recognize it is You, Lord. That this healing would bring her to You, Lord, and Lord, when she comes to You, I know she will be welcomed with open arms in the most grand celebration in heaven. So, Lord, we ask for this miracle and this healing. And this coming to You Lord, we just pray and know that You can do it. We believe in the miracle, Lord. So, Abba Father, Jehovah Raffa have Your way with Mary and bless James with patience, kindness and gentleness as they work together in Mary’s healing. In your precious name. Amen. Abba’s Daughter Sadie M, bye for now.

Hello DABers, this is K from Ohio. I want to pray for Kyle from Pennsylvania. Praying for his daughter Rylee who’s 3 years old. Sir, this prayer request touched my heart so dearly. I have two children and I work with three-, four- and five-year-olds and it just, God knows the children touch my heart, and the pull and they tug until they can’t tug anymore. So, God I ask You, You heard my prayer before I even got on this call. We speak encouragement to the parent’s heart, that they will remember that You are the true living God. That You are Jehovah Raffa, besides You there is none other. There’s nothing that You can’t do. There’s nothing that’s too hard. God, I’m asking that You’d be right there and holding Rylee’s hand. Hold the parent’s hand, wrap them up in Your loving arms. And let them not feel that fear that tries to grip them and twist their hearts and they can’t talk, and they can’t breathe. They know how great You are, and they know You’re a healer and that You’re faithful. But it’s their child, God. Give them strength to stand on Your word and trust You beyond all understanding. And when no one else is sure, they are sure that You are the true and living God and that You’re holy and divine will, will be done. In the name of Jesus. Thank You for being faithful God. Do Your best for them. We’re looking for a miracle. It’s in Your son, Jesus name we pray. We count it all done. Amen.

Ezekiel 24-26

A Parable About the Siege of Jerusalem

24 The word of the Lord came to me in the ninth year, in the tenth month, on the tenth day of the month.[a]

Son of man, record this date, this very day. The king of Babylon laid siege to Jerusalem on this very day. Tell a parable to the rebellious house. Tell them that this is what the Lord God says.

Put the pot on. Put it on. Then pour water in it. Put the pieces of meat into it, every good piece, thigh and shoulder. Fill it with the best cuts.[b] Take the best of the flock. Pile up the wood[c] under it. Boil it thoroughly, so that the pieces[d] in it are well cooked.

Therefore, this is what the Lord God says. Woe to the bloody city, a pot whose residue[e] is inside it, whose residue has not gone out of it!

Take out its cuts of meat piece by piece, without choosing one piece in preference to another.[f] Do this because the blood she shed remains within her. She spilled it on a bare rock. She did not pour it on the ground, where the soil would cover it. To rouse wrath and to exact repayment, I have spilled her blood on a bare rock so that it would not be covered.

Therefore, this is what the Lord God says. Woe to the bloody city! I myself will keep piling up the wood. 10 Add more wood. Stoke the fire. Overcook the meat. Pour out the broth.[g] Let the bones be charred. 11 Leave the empty pot on the coals so that it becomes hot and its bronze glows, till the filth inside it is melted, and its residue is burned away. 12 The city has wearied me with its wickedness. Its filthy residue has not been removed from it. Into the fire with its filthy residue!

13 Your impurity is lewdness. I tried to cleanse you, but you did not become clean, and as a result you will not be clean again from your impurity until I have exhausted my wrath against you. 14 I, the Lord, have spoken. This is coming, and I will do it. I will not neglect it. I will not spare you, and I will not relent. According to your behavior and your misdeeds, you will be judged, declares the Lord God.

The Death of Ezekiel’s Wife

15 The word of the Lord came to me.

16 Son of man, be warned! With one blow I am taking away from you what your eyes desire. You must not mourn or cry. Your tears must not flow. 17 Groan silently. Perform no mourning rites for the dead. Bind your turban on your head. Put your sandals on your feet. Do not cover your upper lip. Do not eat the food people bring to mourners.

18 So I spoke to the people that morning, and in the evening my wife died. The next morning I did as I had been commanded. 19 Then the people asked me, “Won’t you tell us what these things that you are doing mean for us?”

20 I answered them, “This is the word of the Lord that came to me.”

21 Say to the house of Israel that this is what the Lord God says.

I am about to desecrate my sanctuary, the stronghold of which you are so proud, the sight your eyes desire, the place your soul yearns for. Your sons and your daughters whom you have left behind will fall by the sword. 22 You will do as I have done. You will not cover your upper lip. You will not eat the food people bring to mourners. 23 Your turbans will remain on your heads and your sandals on your feet. You will not mourn or cry, but you will waste away in your guilt, and you will groan to one another. 24 In this way, Ezekiel will be a sign to you. You will do everything the same way as he has done it. When it happens, you will know that I am the Lord God.

25 But you, son of man, be aware that on that day when I take away from them their stronghold, their joy and glory, what their eyes desire, and that on which they set their hearts—their sons and their daughters as well— 26 on that day a survivor will come to you to let you hear it with your own ears. 27 On that day, your mouth will be opened when the survivor comes. Then you will speak and be speechless no longer. You will be a sign to them, and they will know that I am the Lord.

Oracles Against the Nations
An Oracle Against the Ammonites

25 The word of the Lord came to me.

Son of man, set your face toward the Ammonites and prophesy against them. You are to tell the Ammonites: Hear the word of the Lord God. This is what the Lord God says. Because you said “Aha!” against my sanctuary when it was desecrated, and against the land of Israel when it was devastated, and against the house of Judah when they went into exile, therefore, I am about to give you to the people of the East as their possession. They will set up their camps in your midst and place their dwellings among you. They will eat your produce, and they will drink your milk. I will make Rabbah into a camel pasture and Ammon into a sheepfold. Then you will know that I am the Lord.

So this is what the Lord God says. Because you clapped your hands and stomped your feet and celebrated against the land of Israel with all the contempt in your soul, therefore, I have stretched out my hand against you, and I have given you as plunder[h] to the nations. I have cut you off from the peoples, and I have made you perish from among the countries. When I have exterminated you, you will know that I am the Lord.[i]

An Oracle Against Moab and Edom

This is what the Lord God says.

Because Moab and Seir said, “Look! The house of Judah is just like all the nations,” I am about to open up the flank[j] of Moab from one end to the other: its cities, its border towns, and the glory of the land, Beth Jeshimoth, Baal Meon, and Kiriathaim. 10 I will deliver Moab, together with the Ammonites, into the possession of the people of the East. I will hand them over to the people of the East as their possession so that the Ammonites will no longer be remembered among the nations. 11 I will execute judgments upon Moab, and they will know that I am the Lord.

12 This is what the Lord God says. Because Edom has inflicted bitter revenge on the house of Judah and has incurred great guilt by pursuing revenge against Judah, 13 therefore, this is what the Lord God says. I will stretch out my hand against Edom. I will cut off man and beast from it and turn it into a wasteland. From Teman to Dedan they will fall by the sword. 14 I will take my revenge on Edom by means of my people Israel, and they will carry out my anger and my wrath against Edom. So they will experience my revenge, declares the Lord God.

An Oracle Against the Philistines

15 This is what the Lord God says.

Because the Philistines pursued revenge and carried their revenge to an extreme, with bitter contempt in their soul, in order to destroy Judah with everlasting hatred, 16 therefore, this is what the Lord God says. I am about to stretch out my hand against the Philistines. I will cut off the Kerethites and destroy those who remain by the seacoast. 17 I will carry out great acts of revenge and furious punishments among them, and they will know that I am the Lord when I lay my revenge upon them.

An Oracle Against Tyre

26 In the eleventh year, on the first day of the month,[k] the word of the Lord came to me.

Son of man, because Tyre said about Jerusalem, “Aha! The gateway to the peoples has been broken. It has been turned over to me. Because of her devastation, I will achieve my goal,” this is what the Lord God says.

I am against you, Tyre, and I will send many nations against you, as the sea sends up its waves. They will destroy the walls of Tyre and break down her towers. I will scrape away even the dust off her and make her a bare rock. In the middle of the sea, she will become nothing but a place where fishing nets are spread out to dry, for I have spoken it, says the Lord God. She will become plunder for the nations, and her daughters on the mainland[l] will be slain by the sword. Then they will know that I am the Lord.

So this is what the Lord God says. I am bringing against Tyre from the north Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon and king of kings, together with horses, chariots, horsemen, and a vast array of troops from many nations. Your daughters on the mainland he will kill with the sword. He will set up a siege wall against you and heap up a ramp against you, and erect a roof of shields[m] against you. He will direct the blows of his battering ram against your walls, and he will demolish your towers with his swords. 10 His horses will be so numerous that the dust they raise will cover you. Your walls will shake from the noise of the horses’ hoofs, the wheels, and the chariots when he enters your gates, as men enter a breached city. 11 With the hoofs of his horses, he will trample all your streets. He will kill all your people with the sword. Your mighty pillars will topple to the ground. 12 They will plunder your wealth and take your merchandise as loot. They will tear down your walls and demolish your magnificent houses. Your stones, your timbers, and your rubble they will throw into the water. 13 I will put an end to the noise of your songs, and the sound of your lyres will be heard no more. 14 I will turn you into a bare rock.

She[n] will become a place where fishing nets are spread out to dry. She will never be rebuilt, for I, the Lord, have spoken, declares the Lord God.

15 This is what the Lord God says to Tyre. How the coastlands will shudder at the sound of your downfall, when the victims groan, when the slain are slaughtered in your midst! 16 All the rulers of the sea will descend from their thrones, remove their robes, and take off their fine embroidered garments. Instead, they will be clothed with trembling. They will sit on the ground and tremble every moment. They will be appalled by you. 17 They will raise a lament over you and say to you, “How you have perished, you city inhabited by men from the sea, you city that was celebrated, a city that was the strongest in the sea. She and her inhabitants, who spread their terror—she and all of her inhabitants have perished.[o] 18 Now the coastlands tremble on the day of your downfall. The coastlands that are on the sea are terrified by your collapse.”

19 So this is what the Lord God says. When I make you a ruined city like the cities that are not inhabited, when I bring up the deep over you and the many waters cover you, 20 then I will bring you down to be with those who have descended to the pit, to the people from ancient times. I will make you live below the earth, like ancient ruins. You will be with those who have descended to the pit, so that you will be uninhabited, and I will not give you glory in the land of the living. 21 I will make you an object of horror, and you will no longer exist. You will be sought but never found again, declares the Lord God.

Footnotes:

  1. Ezekiel 24:1 In the winter of 588 bc
  2. Ezekiel 24:4 Literally the best bones
  3. Ezekiel 24:5 The Hebrew reads bones. Removing one letter from this word leaves the reading wood, which is followed by nearly all English translations. See verse 10.
  4. Ezekiel 24:5 The Hebrew reads bones.
  5. Ezekiel 24:6 The meaning of this word is uncertain. It refers to some sort of uncleanness, perhaps the carbonized waste that remains in an overheated pot.
  6. Ezekiel 24:6 The Hebrew reads no lot has fallen on it for the words without choosing one piece in preference to another.
  7. Ezekiel 24:10 The translation follows the Greek text. The Hebrew seems to read mix in the spices. It is not clear how this reading would fit a context about the final stages of destroying the meat.
  8. Ezekiel 25:7 Plunder (baz) is the reading from the margin of the Hebrew text. The reading in the body of the Hebrew text is bag, a word that appears nowhere else in the Hebrew Bible. Those who attempt to translate it render it as food.
  9. Ezekiel 25:7 Though the events described in this verse are still in the future at the time of speaking, the verbs are all past tense verbs, since, in God’s decree, events he foretells are as good as done.
  10. Ezekiel 25:9 Literally the shoulder or the slope
  11. Ezekiel 26:1 The Hebrew date formula is incomplete since it lacks the name of a month. One Greek manuscript reads in the twelfth year. A date in the second half of the twelfth year would place this prophecy after the fall of Jerusalem, an event which occurred in the middle of the twelfth year according to Ezekiel’s system of dating.
  12. Ezekiel 26:6 Tyre’s daughters are her suburbs on the mainland. Tyre was an island.
  13. Ezekiel 26:8 Apparently this was a cover providing protection for the battering ram.
  14. Ezekiel 26:14 That is, the city personified as a woman
  15. Ezekiel 26:17 The construction of the last part of the sentence is unclear. For clarity, the verb have perished is repeated from the start of the verse.

Hebrews 11:1-16

Faith

11 Faith is being sure about what we hope for, being convinced about things we do not see. For by this faith the ancients were commended in Scripture.[a]

By faith we know that the universe was created by God’s word, so that what is seen did not come from visible things.

By faith Abel offered a better sacrifice to God than Cain did. By faith he was commended in Scripture as righteous; God testified favorably about his gifts. And by faith he still speaks, even though he is dead.

By faith Enoch was taken up, so that he would not experience death, and he was not found because God took him away.[b] In fact, before he was taken away, he was commended in Scripture as one who “pleased God.”[c] And without faith it is impossible to please God. Indeed, it is necessary for the one who approaches God to believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.

By faith Noah, when he was warned about things that had not been seen before, built an ark, in reverent fear, in order to save his family. By it he condemned the world and became an heir of the righteousness that is by faith.

By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go to a place that he was going to receive as an inheritance, and he left without knowing where he was going.

By faith he lived as a stranger in the Promised Land, as if it did not belong to him, dwelling in tents along with Isaac and Jacob, who were heirs with him of the same promise. 10 For he was looking forward to the city that has foundations, whose architect and builder is God.

11 By faith Abraham also received the ability to conceive children, even though Sarah herself was barren and he was past the normal age, because he considered him faithful who made the promise.[d] 12 And so from one man, and he as good as dead, descendants were born as numerous as the stars in the sky and as countless as the sand along the seashore.

13 One by one, all of these died in faith, without having received the things that were promised, but they saw and welcomed them from a distance. They confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth. 14 Indeed, people who say things like that make it clear that they are looking for a land of their own. 15 And if they were remembering the land they had come from, they would have had an opportunity to return. 16 Instead, they were longing for a better land—a heavenly one. For that reason, God is not ashamed to be called their God, because he prepared a city for them.

Footnotes:

  1. Hebrews 11:2 The Greek term for commended appears six more times in this letter (Hebrews 7:8,17; 10:15; 11:4,5,39). Each time it clearly implies by usage and context that it is referring to testimony in Scripture.
  2. Hebrews 11:5 Genesis 5:24
  3. Hebrews 11:5 Genesis 5:24
  4. Hebrews 11:11 Or By faith Sarah received the ability to conceive children, even though she herself was barren and was past the normal age, because she considered him faithful who made the promise. Some witnesses to the text omit was barren and he.

The Lord’s Decree to My Lord

Heading
By David. A psalm.

The First Decree of the Lord

The decree of the Lord to my lord:[a]
“Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies
a footstool under your feet.”

Description of King Messiah’s Rule

The Lord will stretch out your strong scepter from Zion.
Rule in the midst of your enemies.
Your people will be willing on the day of your power.
In majesty of holiness, from the womb of the dawn,
the dew of your youth will be yours.[b]

The Second Decree of the Lord

The Lord has sworn and will not change his mind:
“You are a priest forever, in the manner of Melchizedek.”

Description of King Messiah’s Rule

He will judge the nations.
He will fill valleys with corpses.[c]
He will crush heads over the wide world.[d]
He will drink from a stream beside the way;
therefore, he will lift up his head.

Footnotes:

  1. Psalm 110:1 The second lord in verse 1 is not one of the divine names that are usually rendered Lord or Lord. It is the common noun for lord. It does refer to Christ but as a description, not a title.
  2. Psalm 110:3 Verse 3 is cryptic. The translation is quite literal.
  3. Psalm 110:6 The translation combines the Hebrew and Greek variants.
  4. Psalm 110:6 Or crush the head of the wide world

Ezekiel 23

Two Lewd Sisters Act Like Prostitutes

23 The word of the Lord came to me.

Son of man, there were two women, daughters of the same mother. They acted like prostitutes in Egypt, where they were prostitutes during their youth. There they let their breasts be fondled. There they let men caress their virgin nipples.[a]

The older sister was named Oholah, and her sister was named Oholibah.[b] They became mine and gave birth to sons and daughters. (As for their names, Samaria is Oholah and Jerusalem is Oholibah.)

Oholah acted like a prostitute instead of being faithful to me. She lusted after her lovers, the Assyrians—bodyguards clothed in purple, governors and commanders, all of them desirable young men, cavalrymen riding horses.[c] She bestowed her favors upon all the elite of the Assyrians, and along with all those for whom she lusted, she defiled herself with all their filthy idols. She did not give up the whoring she had practiced since Egypt, when men lay down with her during her youth. They caressed her virgin nipples and poured out their lust upon her. Therefore, I delivered her into the hands of her lovers, into the hands of the Assyrians, after whom she had lusted. 10 They exposed her nakedness. They took away her sons and her daughters and killed her with the sword. She became notorious among women because of the punishments they inflicted upon her.

11 Although her sister Oholibah saw this, she behaved even more obscenely and lustfully than her sister, and her lustful whoring was even worse than her sister’s whoring. 12 She lusted after the Assyrians—governors, commanders, bodyguards in full uniform, and cavalrymen riding horses, all of them desirable young men. 13 Then I saw that she too had defiled herself. Both of them had gone the same way. 14 In fact, Oholibah intensified her whoring by looking at figures of men engraved on the wall, images of Chaldeans incised in bright red, 15 with belts around their waists and flowing turbans on their heads. All of them looked like elite officers, like Babylonians whose native land was Chaldea. 16 At the mere sight of them she lusted after them and sent messengers to them in Chaldea. 17 The Babylonians came to her bed to make love, and they defiled her by acting like whores themselves. But after she had been defiled by them, she tore herself away from them in disgust. 18 Because she had acted like a whore so openly and exposed her nakedness, I tore myself away from her in disgust, just as I had turned away from her sister in disgust. 19 Yet she increased her whoring. She remembered the days of her youth when she acted like a prostitute in the land of Egypt. 20 She lusted after her paramours, whose genitals[d] were like the genitals of donkeys and whose ejaculation was like the ejaculation of horses. 21 So you revisited the lewdness of your youth when your nipples were caressed in Egypt, and your young breasts were fondled.[e]

22 Therefore, Oholibah, this is what the Lord God says. Hear this loud and clear! I am about to rouse your lovers against you, those you had turned away from in disgust. I will bring them against you from all sides: 23 the sons of the Babylonians and all the Chaldeans, Pekod, Shoa, and Koa, and all the Assyrians with them, desirable young men, governors and commanders all of them, elite officers and men of high rank, all of them riding on horses. 24 They will come against you with weapons, chariots, and wagons, and with a horde of people. With shields, armor,[f] and helmets they will take up positions against you on all sides.

I will give you up to them for judgment, and they will judge you according to their own standards. 25 I will turn my jealousy against you, and they will deal with you in wrath. They will cut off your nose and your ears, and your survivors will fall by the sword. They will take away your sons and your daughters, and your survivors will be devoured by fire. 26 They will strip you of your clothing and take away your beautiful jewelry. 27 I will put an end to your depravity and to the whoring you began in the land of Egypt. You will not lift up your eyes to them or remember Egypt anymore. 28 For this is what the Lord God says. Listen! I am about to deliver you into the hands of those you hate, into the hands of those you turned away from in disgust. 29 They will treat you hatefully. They will take away everything you have worked for and leave you completely naked. Your whorish nakedness will be exposed. Your depravity and your acts of prostitution 30 have brought those things upon you because of your whoring after the nations, because you defiled yourself with their filthy idols. 31 Because you walked in the way of your sister, I will put her cup into your hand.

32 This is what the Lord God says. You will drink your sister’s cup, a cup deep and wide. It will cause you derision and ridicule because it is so full. 33 You will be filled with drunkenness and grief by the cup of horror and devastation, the cup of your sister Samaria. 34 You will drink it and drain it. You will gnaw its broken pieces and tear your breasts. For I have spoken, declares the Lord God. 35 Therefore, this is what the Lord God says. Because you have forgotten me and cast me behind your back, you yourself must also bear the penalty of your depravity and your whoring.

36 The Lord also said this to me:

Son of man, will you bring charges against Oholah and Oholibah? Make their abominations known to them.

37 They have committed adultery, and blood is on their hands. They have committed adultery with their filthy idols. They have even offered up their children, whom they bore for me, to the idols as food.

38 What is more, they have done this to me: They defiled my sanctuary on the same day they desecrated my Sabbaths. 39 When they slaughtered their children for their filthy idols, they entered my sanctuary on that same day to defile it. Just look! This is what they did in my own house.

40 They even sent for men to come from far away, men to whom they had sent a messenger, and those men did come.

For them you[g] bathed. You applied eye shadow and put on your jewelry. 41 You sat on an expensive couch. In front of it you set a table, on which you placed my incense and my perfumed oil.

42 The noise of a carefree crowd surrounded her. In addition to the large throng of all kinds of men, they even brought drunkards[h] from the desert. They put bracelets on their arms and beautiful crowns on their heads. 43 Then I said about the woman worn out with adulteries, “Let them keep using her as a whore because that is what she is.”[i] 44 So they used her the way one uses a whore. So they used Oholah and Oholibah, those depraved women. 45 But righteous men will punish them with the punishment due to adulteresses, and the punishment due to murderers, for they are adulteresses, and blood is on their hands.

46 So this is what the Lord God says. I will bring an army against them and hand them over to terror and plunder. 47 The army will stone them and cut them down with their swords. They will slaughter their sons and daughters and burn down their houses with fire.

48 In this way I will remove depravity from the land, so that all women may take warning not to act in such a depraved way as you do. 49 They will impose upon you the penalty for your depravity, and you will bear the punishment for your sinful worship of your filthy idols. Then you will know that I am the Lord God.

Footnotes:

  1. Ezekiel 23:3 As he does elsewhere in the book, Ezekiel uses blunt language to condemn Israel’s sins of physical and spiritual adultery.
  2. Ezekiel 23:4 Oholah means her tent. Samaria had its own sanctuary, not the Lord’s. Oholibah means my tent is in her. Jerusalem had the true sanctuary of the Lord, but they did not honor it.
  3. Ezekiel 23:6 Or charioteers
  4. Ezekiel 23:20 Literally flesh. Once again Ezekiel uses blunt, direct language.
  5. Ezekiel 23:21 The translation your young breasts were fondled is based on the parallel actions in verses 3 and 8. The Hebrew in verse 21 reads for the sake of your young breasts. The two readings fondle and for the sake of look almost identical in Hebrew script.
  6. Ezekiel 23:24 Or small and large shields
  7. Ezekiel 23:40 As is often the case in prophecy, there are a number of rapid switches between words addressed to the prophet and to the people, and between words addressed to the people and words about the people.
  8. Ezekiel 23:42 Or Sabeans
  9. Ezekiel 23:43 The verse is obscure. Literally the Hebrew reads now her whoredom itself will go whoring, and she.

Hebrews 10:18-39

18 Now where these sins are forgiven, there is no longer any sacrifice for sin.

Confidence Through Christ

19 Brothers,[a] we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place through the blood of Jesus. 20 It is a new and living way he opened for us through the curtain, that is, his flesh. 21 We also have a great priest over the house of God. 22 So let us approach with a sincere heart, in the full confidence of faith, because our hearts have been sprinkled to take away a bad conscience, and our bodies have been washed with pure water. 23 Let us hold on firmly to the confession of our hope without wavering, since he who promised is faithful.

Do Not Keep On Sinning

24 Let us also consider carefully how to spur each other on to love and good works. 25 Let us not neglect meeting together, as some have the habit of doing. Rather, let us encourage each other, and all the more as you see the Day[b] approaching.

26 For if we deliberately keep on sinning after we have received the full knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains any sacrifice for sins. 27 Instead, there is a certain fearful expectation of judgment and a raging fire that is going to consume the enemies of God. 28 Anyone who rejected the law of Moses was put to death without pity, on the basis of the testimony of two or three witnesses. 29 How much greater punishment do you think will be deserved by the person who trampled the Son of God underfoot, who considered insignificant the blood of the covenant, by which he was sanctified, and who insulted the Spirit of grace? 30 For we know the one who said:

Vengeance is mine. I will repay.[c]

And again:

The Lord will judge his people.[d]

31 It is a terrifying thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

Endure Suffering Patiently

32 Remember the former days when, after you were enlightened, you patiently endured a great struggle of sufferings. 33 Sometimes you were publicly shamed by insults and persecutions. At other times you became companions of those who were treated this way. 34 Indeed, you also sympathized with those in prison,[e] and when your possessions were seized, you accepted it with joy, because you knew that you yourselves had a better and lasting possession. 35 So do not throw away your confidence, which has a great reward. 36 Certainly you need patient endurance so that, after you do God’s will, you may receive what was promised. 37 For in just a little while:

The one who is coming will come and will not delay.
38 And my[f] righteous one will live by faith,
but if he shrinks back,
my soul takes no pleasure in him.[g]

39 Now we are not part of those who shrink back, resulting in destruction, but of those who have faith, resulting in the soul’s salvation.

Psalm 109

Psalm 109

Deceitful Men Have Opened Their Mouths

Heading
For the choir director. By David. A psalm.

The Problem and the Prayer

O God whom I praise, do not be silent,
because they have opened wicked, deceitful mouths against me.
They have spoken against me with lying tongues.
They surround me with hateful words.
They attack me without cause.
In return for my love they accuse me,
but I am a man of prayer.[a]
They repay me with evil for good,
with hatred for my love.

The Curse

Appoint an evil one to testify against him,
and let an accuser[b] stand at his right hand.
When he is tried, let him be found guilty,
and let his prayer be sin.
Let his days be few.
Let another take his office.
Let his children be fatherless
and his wife a widow.
10 Let his children always wander and beg.
Let them seek food far from their ruined homes.[c]
11 Let a creditor confiscate all he has.
Let strangers plunder everything he worked for.
12 Let there be no one to extend mercy to him.
Let there be no one to show favor to his fatherless children.
13 Let his descendants be cut off.
In the next generation let their name be blotted out.
14 Let the guilt of his fathers be remembered before the Lord.
Let the sin of his mother never be blotted out.
15 Let their sins remain before the Lord continually,
and let the memory of these people be cut off from the earth.

16 Because he did not remember to show mercy,
but he pursued the poor man and the needy
and the brokenhearted to put them to death.
17 Since he loved cursing, so let it fall on him.
He found no pleasure in blessing, so let it be far from him.
18 Since he wore cursing as his clothing,
let it enter into his stomach like water
and into his bones like oil.
19 Let it be like a garment wrapped around him,
like a belt tied around him forever.
20 May the Lord do all this to my accusers
and to those who speak evil against my life.

Prayer for Help

21 But you, Lord God, deal with me for the sake of your name.
Because of the goodness of your mercy, deliver me.
22 For I am poor and needy,
and my heart is wounded[d] within me.
23 Like a shadow after it lengthens, I go away.
I am shaken off like a locust.
24 My knees give way from fasting,
and my flesh has become lean, without fat.
25 But I—I am scorned by them.
They see me. They shake their heads.
26 Help me, O Lord my God.
Save me according to your mercy.
27 Let them know that this is your hand.
You, O Lord, have done it.
28 They may curse, but you will bless.
They rose up, but they will be put to shame.
Then your servant will rejoice.
29 My accusers will be dressed with disgrace.
Their shame will wrap around them like a robe.

Closing Praise

30 With my mouth I will keep on thanking the Lord.
In the midst of many people I will praise him.
31 For the Lord stands at the right hand of the needy,
to save his life from those who condemn him.

But God does new things when He chooses to do new things. And when we see the ways in which we…we struggle to move forward as God does new things inside of us, or around us, or among us. And we’ll start telling each other our doctrine stories, to explain away what God might be doing when it starts to mess with our little tidy box of theology. And all of the sudden, we become just like the Hebrew people that this was written to. And so, there’s attention, and a disruption exposed there behind the story. So ultimately, we have to learn to hold onto our theology and doctrine loosely and hold onto the Father and the guidance of His Holy Spirit tightly. When we believe, God is beginning to do a new thing.

Prayer:

And that is our prayer, Father. Like our brothers and sisters of old, we struggle, we try to put You in a box, we try to explain you in every way that we can, and we try to make doctrine around it. And these are our best efforts from finite minds and hearts to explain the infinite and Almighty. And yet it is this infinite and Almighty spirit that is within us, the same spirit that raised Christ from the dead. And so, we live within that tension and that mystery. And often we’ll hang on to what we think that we know more tightly them we’ll hold onto You. And we’ll trust what we think we know, more than we’ll trust You. And the same invitation given to the Hebrew people in the book of Hebrews at that time, is still given to us, the opportunity to be in a personal, first-hand, first-person relationship with You. And so, what can we do, but what we do most every day, invite You. Come, Holy Spirit, well up with in us, spill out from us, illuminate our path, lead us into all truth. It is not information about You that we seek, it is You, Your heart, Your essence that we seek. And You have sought out the same thing in us from the moment of our birth: union, collaboration, relationship. So, come Holy Spirit, we pray in Jesus name. Amen.

Hello DAB family, this is Starting Over Sister in Texas. And I think I’ve called before. I fell at a gym on a concrete floor and fractured my elbow in ten pieces in May. And had an elbow replacement. And it’s been really hard and physical therapist was forcing my arm to try and straighten, about a week and a half ago and I don’t know what happened but it is enormously set me back in pain. And inability to use my arm, my hand and I’m so discouraged about it. I want, like prayer for substantial healing so I can be able to use my arm and exercise again. Exercise was one of my few things I really enjoyed in life and it’s kind of been taken away. So, please pray that God helps heal my arm, it’s my elbow and my hand, all the nerves, I guess are really damaged. So, I’m very discouraged right now. Thank you for praying for me.

So, you have to imagine how Hebrew people who had the Mosaic law baked into their culture, trying to live right and devout would have difficulty embracing this because their whole lives they’ve been taught a different way. And now they have to kind of open of their eyes and wake up to something new that God is doing in the world, and realize that they’re the first ones in. So, it’s not like this group mentality where something is over time been brought into culture, like we experience now in our faith. They’re like the first ones. And so, this is a big step of faith forward. So, like if someone came along and started saying okay all of you Gentile believers you now need to practice animal sacrifice. God is doing a new thing and we’re going back to the old way. But it’s a new thing and you need to offer these sacrifices. Right, that would be hard for us to get our minds around. In the same way that it would be difficult for them to make that step forward, even though, even though this was supposed to happen, even though there was precedent for this new thing to come. All kinds of new things are coming down the pipe, just like they are now. And so, we can see the tension in this, that we don’t normally see without context, because this is just a doctrinal statement about our faith, like we…we understand these things. That like that Jesus was the sacrifice once and for all, his blood covers all sins for all time, we no longer need to sacrifice. Like that’s the normal way of thinking. But if it weren’t, right, we’d have to take some time to be able to move in that direction, prayerfully. And yet, the writer of Hebrews is skilled enough to continually look back into the sacred Hebrew Scriptures. So, when we’re talking about Melchizedek, we were talking about Psalm 110. But all throughout there’s these references back to prophetic utterances that are revealing that this is what’s happening and it’s happening right now. So, Psalm 40 is quoted today as a prophetic utterance supporting what they’re saying. Jeremiah chapter 31 is quoted today as a prophetic utterance to show this is what’s happening. And for we who are so far removed from this time, like we can get the book of Romans and we can get the book of Hebrews together and read them and go like, there. There is the complete doctrine of the Christian faith. But what’s really going on historically is that Paul is out moving among the Gentiles, the gospel is spreading like wildfire among the Gentiles. The Jewish people, the Hebrew people are having a much more difficult time embracing this, and for the most part they’re not embracing this, but this letter to the Hebrews is intended to be circulated, and wrestled with, and talked about among those people. This is the document to those people to explain all of this in a very Hebrew centric context. So, it’s not just a book of theological understandings and doctrines. It’s a very missional letter offering language to explain the good news to a people who had rejected Jesus at face value. But because of all that came afterward, we’re considering. So, we have the book of Hebrews as the basis for so much Christian doctrine. But the story that kind of lingers here behind the story is the tension that arises when God begins to do a new thing. So, if we go back to the time when the book of Hebrews was written, God is doing a new thing, and the writer of Hebrews is using the Scriptures to show how that works. And in the process, it’s setting aside old things. In this case, the whole sacrificial system.
