2 Kings 10:32-12:21, Acts 18:1-22, Psalms 145:1-21, Proverbs 18:1

Today is the 27th day of June welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I’m Brian and it is wonderful to be here with you today. And I want to invite everybody to kinda hang around until the end, all the way until the end today to have a little family gathering, little Global Campfire chat. I need to tell you a story and make an announcement and see if anybody is interested. And, so, how’s that for set up. But stick around until end. It is…It’s important. But that will be at the end because we’re at the beginning. There’s something even more important. And that is that we have gathered here for a purpose, to take the next step forward together in the Scriptures. And, so, let’s dive in. We left off yesterday in the book of second Kings. So, that’s where we will pick up the story. We are reading from the Christian Standard Bible this week. And today second Kings chapter 10 verse 32 through 12 verse 21.

Commentary:

Alight. So, in the book of Acts we are traveling along with the apostle Paul. And he was in Corinth speaking in the synagogue. That was the custom. He would go to a new city, find out where the Hebrew people were, where the synagogue was, and that is where he would begin, with the Jews sharing the gospel. But invariably there would be all kinds of dispute and eventually the Gentiles would also hear the message which at times caused an uproar because the Jews would cause a riot against Paul. But in this case, Paul has shared the gospel with the Hebrew people. It has been rejected. And he finally has to like tell them that your blood is on your own heads. Like I have told you what I came to tell you, what God told me to tell you and you have not received it. So, I have given the message. I’m innocent of this. Your blood is on your own heads. I’m going to the Gentiles. And it’s such a fascinating story because going to the Gentiles wasn’t like to leave Corinth and go somewhere else and it wasn’t even to go to another part of town where the Gentiles were. It was to go next door to the synagogue to the home of the person named Titius Justus who was a Gentile who believed. And, so, Paul moves next door and continues to share the same message that he had been teaching. Again, we have another example of what it looked like at the time of the development of the church and the initial spread of the gospel throughout the Roman Empire. And again, I point out that we often have this rose-colored view of the book of Acts as the time that we need to get back to. And that is fine and good, but we often idealize the time. Once again, we are being shown that pretty much wherever Paul goes, it’s sort of the same thing. He’s being opposed, which means the gospel is being opposed and rejected even as it’s being accepted. And everywhere he goes, there is conflict that seems to arise around it. Sometimes he gets run out of town. Sometimes he gets beaten up. Sometimes he gets put in prison. Sometimes he gets away clean. Like, but it’s always a bit of an uproar everywhere that the gospel is going as things are developing. We can understand some of the things that people who were hearing the gospel would need to face and would need to wrestle with in their own faith to come to faith in Jesus, but we also need to understand that this is what it looks like when one kingdom pushes up against another kingdom. What we’re watching is a spiritual battle that ultimately manifests itself in people’s actions and decisions and choices. And, so, as we see the kingdom of God advancing in the book of Acts we also see that it is opposed in the book of Acts and throughout the rest of the New Testament which should give us at least a little bit of context and interpretation in our own lives. We’re a part of the same mission, like the exact same mission, to go into all the world and preach the good news to every creature, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Yes, it is the good news. It is the hope of humanity, but it is bringing light into the darkness and what is in the dark wants to remain hidden in the dark and not exposed to the light even though being exposed to the light is the pathway to freedom. Like there’s nothing left to hide, which is freedom. Let’s not forget this as we continue our journey through the book of Acts, but let’s not forget this as we live our lives when we find ourselves opposed, especially when it’s for the gospel. Like we’ve been told over and over and over that that’s generally what we should expect. Let’s not forget that as we continue to be a light in a very dark world.

Prayer:

Holy Spirit, we invite you into that. And certainly, we can boil this down to the fact that we need to share the gospel more, anything like that. But it’s more that we become aware and understand what is going on here and become more and more aware of how truly utterly dependent on you we are as we walk this journey of faith. We are lost without your leadership and guidance, and we are confused when we run into opposition. And, so, come Holy Spirit bringing comfort to us as we begin to open our eyes and see what’s really going on here. Help us to stay focused on that we pray. In the mighty name of Jesus we ask. Amen.

Announcements:

Okay. So, I was mentioning for everyone to kinda hang around here to the end for a story that leads to an important announcement. So, here’s the story. There was a year, it was a year called 2020. A year probably unlike any other year that any of us who are alive today ever saw before. There had been rumors of a virus going around. There were also rumors that it was starting to spread and was potentially dangerous. But other than it being just kind of it being in the news and an awareness of it the year began like any other year. We started a new journey across the year and through the Bible on the first day of January like we do every year. And for about the previous decade, the way that the year shaped up, we would be spending a couple of weeks in the land of the Bible, in the land of Israel and broadcasting from Israel and hosting all kinds of pictures from all the different places in Israel. And 2020 was no different. We got on the big plane that takes human beings across oceans and landed in Rome for a couple of days to do some filming there around the apostle Paul, and these rumors about this virus had a name, Corona, Corona virus, the thing we call Covid 19 now, like as…as a routine was called the coronavirus as I recall it. And there was…there was a bunch of buzz about this in Italy. Like…like the rumor was this virus has made it to Italy and is like taking over, just spreading really, really fast. And didn’t think much about it, just kind of went through the couple of days that we had there and then were able to board another big plane and fly from Rome to Tel Aviv in Israel and prepare for our pilgrimage, our annual journey through the land of the Bible. Within a couple of days of landing in Israel, Italy was on lock down. Like nobody in, nobody out kind of thing, which was sort of a first for me ever really seeing that before. But we were all thinking, wait a second, we were just there. Like we were just there. What are the implications here? What is…what is going on? What are we supposed to think? And at the time there wasn’t a whole lot to think. There wasn’t a whole lot to know. There wasn’t some kind of test. It was like the beginning of something that I think most of us didn’t think was gonna be that big of a deal. And, so, we went about our business, the journey of a pilgrimage through the land of the Bible and we began to travel through the land, even as news of this kind of coronavirus continued to…to build momentum. But we’re on this pilgrimage and we’re all over the land of Israel. So, it’s not like we’re constantly tethered to technology, where we’re constantly checking the news and hearing all the latest because everyone was immersing themselves in what we were doing, which was to immerse ourselves in the Scriptures where the Scriptures happened. So, we ended up successfully completing that journey. And obviously you got to go home. So, everybody got on big planes and went back to where they came from. We got on a big plane and ended up back in the rolling hills of Tennessee in Nashville where we live. And it’s typically at that point that the jet lag begins, it pounds you for a couple of days. You just don’t know where you are anymore and your whole-body clock is twisted off a little bit and…but this was still in the news. But within a couple of weeks, it was the news and the United States where I live was going on lock down. We were going to take a two-week break. We were all going to try to do the best we could to distance ourselves from each other and just kind of stay in our own family units. And it was for an introvert like me sort of exciting, sort of like, I don’t have to feel guilty about this, can just be here where I am and clear the calendar. And everybody has to do this. And, so, let’s do this. And it was like interesting. And you could go out, right, all over the world like for essential things. Like you could go out, but for some reason we couldn’t find…like there was nowhere to get any kind of paper products -  paper plates, paper towels, toilet paper - empty shelves across the country, probably across the world, but across the country. And it was just this weird thing where the general thought was this is a weird thing that’s gonna last a couple of weeks. We just need to let this kind of blow over. And as we now know it didn’t just blow over. And, so, we spent a good portion of 2020 isolated in some way or another, and the effects of what were going on were certainly changing the way people work, the way people interact. All kinds of things are being changed and I think we’re still kind of…kind of feeling some of those repercussions, but it…it changed things. And as 2020 got into its latter portion of the year, 2021 looked pretty uncertain, especially for something like a pilgrimage to the land of the Bible. And, so, for the first time we cancelled, we called it off, we had to postpone thinking that we would punt a year. And that year became two years and we decided not to continue in 2022. There were just all kinds of rules and regulations and like all over the world. Like everything was kinda discombobulated about how you could leave the country you were in and arrive in another country and how after you left that other country you would be able to arrive back in your…in your homeland. And these things were sort of shifting and changing quite a bit. It was kind of unstable. And within the Global Campfire community with the Daily Audio Bible here we’re all over the world, we’re all over the map. And, so, just trying to handle those kinds of logistics was overwhelming. It was just like, this isn’t wise. We should try to be wise and caring and loving and compassionate and wise. And that was going to continue, actually indefinitely. I was not going to go back in 2023 and I was starting to just settle into maybe…maybe that season…maybe we’ve done a decade of that season. It’s all lot, incredible amount of effort and energy. And it felt like just there’s still so much uncertainty about, if I go can I get back. And all these kind of moving things that we have no control over and it just felt like we’re not going to have the answers, they’re changing all the time. This is not…this is not the time. So, about a month ago I got an email from one of our travel partners who help coordinate the logistics of a pilgrimage like that and it was just a little. It was like everything’s confirmed, all the hotels, all the guides, like everybody that is the team, everybody is confirmed for 2023. And I looked at that email and I was like I don’t remember that we scheduled anything. And, so, my initial sort of reaction was just a quick email back going, I didn’t know we had scheduled anything, but we don’t have any plans, and so I’m not sure exactly what that’s all about. But I didn’t do that. I like to sometimes sleep on things. I can be slow in some of my decisions because I need to find a place of peace, like a place where I’ve seen all the angles that I can see and made the wisest choice that I can make. So, I just kinda sat with that for a week, started talking about it with my wife, Jill and just kind of considering, what do we want to do here? We can just keep kicking the can down the road and…and never return to the land of the Bible. We…we’ve been, we’ve seen, we know, we understand and it’s monumental in shifting how we understand the Bible, but we’ve been, and we’ve seen, and we can explain, and we can show pictures and we can show videos. And, so, maybe that season is over, but something started to ignite in our hearts, something sort of caught fire. And, so, I mean in a couple of years, when you have kind of a routine that you do, then there is some sort of underlying system in place, it keep things on track. And when you stop doing those things for a couple years than that sort of falls apart, but this was a situation where most…almost all of the logistics, like all of the things and all of the people and all of logistics are reasonably in place. And, so, some discussions happened and one of my concerns was the moving target of being able to go and being able to get home and what are the different requirements and how are we gonna be put in a position where we have to answer for a foreign government when we have literally no control whatsoever about who decides what for a nation. But as it turns out during the space of a couple of weeks of discernment and consideration the regulations changed to be essentially no regulations, like sort of full circle back to where we were before this ever happened. So, going to Israel doesn’t require testing, doesn’t require vaccinations, and getting back home even during last couple weeks that’s sort of shifted and it’s the same. No testing, no vaccinations, no nothing. No…no nothing. Its regular. You go, you come back home. And, so, that was like a bit of confirmation. Like, alright, we don’t have to answer for people who are making decisions that are above our pay grade that we have no influence over. And, so, that was good. But I don’t know if you’ve noticed through this whole time period like things have gotten really expensive, and costs of everything have risen, and supply chains up have been slowed down and all kinds of disruptions, little disruptions that add up to all kinds of changes. And with a nation like Israel, where tourism is a…a…a big deal, that whole industry had been decimated. So, it was like, what…what is this gonna look like?Aand it was then that I began to realize we did book this trip becuase we were trying to have a stable team in place which requires looking out several years to make sure that everybody that is the team, especially on the Israeli side is involved. And we had done that to keep a cohesive team together and Covid had canceled some of that reservation, but 2023 was the last year we had locked in. And what we had locked in was just the average normal pre-Covid increase in pricing that happens all over the world as things increase. And, so, that was…that was kind of it. Was like, we should. We may…like I have no idea how that industry, the tourism industry will change itself and how it has changed itself over the last couple of years, but we had already locked in hotels, we had already locked in all of the logistics all the stuff. And, so, long story short, it is our intention to take a Daily Audio Bible pilgrimage to the land of the Bible February 6th through the 19th of 2023. I do not know what lies beyond that. I do not know that there would be 2024, 2025, and so on and so forth. I’ve learned a lesson over the last couple years, disruptive things can happen that completely sideswipe your best laid plans. And when I first began going to Israel over a decade ago I would always hear people say, go well you can, you never know you just never know how things are going to be there or how things are to be in the world or whatever. And…and I always just kinda dismiss that. Like that’s just marketing. But I’ve seen it now. And, so, I don’t know. None of us know. What I do know is that we are intending to go back one more time. We may go back for 10 more straight years for 20 more straight years. I don’t know. I know that the only intention that we have at the moment is that we’re going to go and take advantage of what we had arranged for before we even knew the name Covid-19. And the truth is, I don’t know. We’re gonna kinda can step out in faith here. I don’t know if the Global Campfire…like I don’t know if anybody wants to have this experience. I don’t know if we will be having a small intimate trip or if we’ll fill up. The maximum we can do is to buses because of the kind of trip that we do. There’s all kinds of ways to experience Israel but we’re the Daily Audio Bible here around the Global Campfire. And, so, immersing ourselves in the places where the Bible happened and rooting ourselves in the soil while rooting ourselves in the Scriptures, that's…that’s what we do. That’s what the Daily Audio Bible is. And, so, that’s what we do when we tour the land of the Bible. And I’ve been there a bunch of times and seen a bunch of different ways that it can be done. And over the course of many years, we developed our own way of doing it. For example, there’s a generous generous portion…in fact I think it’s like 60% of the land is wilderness land, is desert land in Israel. And Israel, believe it or not, as small as it is is geographically diverse as a place like the United States, we’re you have deserts and canyons, but you also have fertile valleys. And like the Galilee is an oasis. But going to the wilderness takes some effort. But so much of the backdrop of the Bible and so much of the backdrop of our lives take place in the wilderness. How can you be there and not see that? And, so, I began to think, like how can we see north, south, east and west? How can…and central…and the lowlands…like, how can we see the different regions? All of this land is biblical. How can we see all of the different regions knowing like if this is the only chance, I ever get to be in this land I go home feeling like I understand, like I saw…I saw so much? There isn’t a typography that I don’t understand. Like I get what’s going on here when I read the Bible. Well there are some really really large ministries that will take like 12 buses full of people and just be this kind of massive, massive production, but that’s not really a pilgrimage and that’s not really my thing anyway. And I get my hands in the soil. Like I like to be together as a community experiencing this together. And, so, that…there’s only so much capacity for that to even be able happen. So, I don’t know if we’re gonna be just a couple of us or if we’re gonna have a couple buses but we’re gonna go. At least this one more time while we can. So, I am announcing that we will be going to the land of the Bible on a pilgrimage, February 6th through the 19th to the land of the Bible. And if you have had that desire or have even been waiting for an opportunity that made sense, maybe this is that opportunity. And you can find out all of the details, things that I probably can’t go through and take up another hour or whatever it is, just go through. We’ll talk about this over the next days and weeks. But if you want to check it out. Space will be limited. I mean, it has a cap. But if seeing this with your own eyes while you are in the land of the living and smelling what it smells and like being able to feel the soil crunch under your feet and realize I am where, what I have imagined my whole life, I am where that happened. Like I…really when I first thought about 2023, when I first got that email my initial reaction was I don’t want to do it. It is so much work. I’m not sure we’re ready for all of that. But now, now as I’m like saying this out loud and telling everybody, yeah, we’re gonna do this, my heart just comes alive thinking about all of us jetlagged, weary from a lot of travel across the world, but showing up all in one place on our first evening, our welcome dinner together where we all get to see each other for the first time all together as a community in Ashdod, which is an ancient Philistine stronghold, but a city, a modern city of Israel now right on the Mediterranean coast. So, to be able to kinda land in Tel Aviv and then make our way to Ashdod and all finally be able to have our first meal together and get acquainted a little bit and be able to look across the street and go, that is the Mediterranean Sea and I am somewhere that’s different than where I normally am. I am now in the land of the Bible and to just kind of feel all that energy. I’m looking forward to it. The Daily Audio Bible Reading for Monday June 27, 2022 (NIV)

2 Kings 10:32-12:21

32 In those days the Lord began to reduce the size of Israel.(A) Hazael(B) defeated the Israelites throughout their territory 33 from the Jordan eastward: the whole land of Gilead—the Gadites, the Reubenites, and the Manassites—from Aroer(C) which is by the Arnon Valley(D) through Gilead to Bashan.[a]

34 The rest of the events of Jehu’s reign, along with all his accomplishments and all his might, are written in the Historical Record of Israel’s Kings.(E) 35 Jehu rested with his ancestors and was buried in Samaria. His son Jehoahaz(F) became king in his place. 36 The length of Jehu’s reign over Israel in Samaria was twenty-eight years.(G)

Athaliah Usurps the Throne

11 When Athaliah,(H) Ahaziah’s mother,(I) saw that her son was dead,(J) she proceeded to annihilate all the royal heirs. 2 Jehosheba,(K) who was King Jehoram’s daughter and Ahaziah’s(L) sister, secretly rescued Joash son of Ahaziah from among the king’s sons who were being killed and put him and the one who nursed him in a bedroom. So he was hidden from Athaliah and was not killed. 3 Joash was in hiding with her in the Lord’s temple six years while Athaliah reigned over the land.

Athaliah Overthrown

4 In(M) the seventh year, Jehoiada(N) sent for the commanders of hundreds, the Carites, and the guards.(O) He had them come to him in the Lord’s temple, where he made a covenant with them and put them under oath. He showed them the king’s son 5 and commanded them, “This is what you are to do: A third of you who come on duty on the Sabbath(P) are to provide protection for the king’s palace. 6 A third are to be at the Foundation[b] Gate and a third at the gate behind the guards. You are to take turns providing protection for the palace.[c](Q)

7 “Your two divisions that go off duty on the Sabbath are to provide the king protection at the Lord’s temple. 8 Completely surround the king with weapons in hand. Anyone who approaches the ranks is to be put to death. Be with the king in all his daily tasks.”[d](R)

9 So the commanders of hundreds did everything the priest Jehoiada commanded. They each brought their men—those coming on duty on the Sabbath and those going off duty—and came to the priest Jehoiada.(S) 10 The priest gave to the commanders of hundreds King David’s spears and shields(T) that were in the Lord’s temple. 11 Then the guards stood with their weapons in hand surrounding the king—from the right side of the temple to the left side, by the altar and by the temple.

12 Jehoiada brought out the king’s son, put the crown(U) on him, gave him the testimony,[e](V) and made him king. They anointed(W) him and clapped their hands and cried, “Long live the king!” (X)

13 When Athaliah(Y) heard the noise from the guard and the crowd, she went out to the people at the Lord’s temple.(Z) 14 She looked, and there was the king standing by the pillar(AA) according to the custom. The commanders and the trumpeters were by the king, and all the people of the land were rejoicing and blowing trumpets.(AB) Athaliah tore her clothes and screamed “Treason! Treason!” (AC)

15 Then the priest Jehoiada(AD) ordered the commanders of hundreds(AE) in charge of the army, “Take her out between the ranks, and put to death by the sword anyone who follows her,” for the priest had said, “She is not to be put to death in the Lord’s temple.”(AF) 16 So they arrested her, and she went through the horse entrance(AG) to the king’s palace, where she was put to death.(AH)

Jehoiada’s Reforms

17 Then(AI) Jehoiada made a covenant between the Lord, the king, and the people that they would be the Lord’s people(AJ) and another covenant between the king and the people.[f](AK) 18 So all the people of the land went to the temple of Baal and tore it down. They smashed its altars and images to pieces,(AL) and they killed Mattan, the priest of Baal, at the altars.(AM)

Then Jehoiada the priest appointed guards for the Lord’s temple.(AN) 19 He took the commanders of hundreds, the Carites, the guards,(AO) and all the people of the land, and they brought the king from the Lord’s temple. They entered the king’s palace by way of the guards’ gate. Then Joash(AP) sat on the throne of the kings. 20 All the people of the land rejoiced, and the city was quiet, for they had put Athaliah to death by the sword in the king’s palace.

Judah’s King Joash

21 Joash[g](AQ) was seven years old when he became king.(AR)

12 In the seventh year of Jehu, Joash became king, and he reigned forty years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name was Zibiah; she was from Beer-sheba.(AS) 2 Throughout the time the priest Jehoiada(AT) instructed(AU) him, Joash did what was right in the Lord’s sight.(AV) 3 Yet the high places were not taken away; the people continued sacrificing and burning incense on the high places.(AW)

Repairing the Temple

4 Then(AX) Joash said to the priests, “All the dedicated silver brought to the Lord’s temple,(AY) census silver,(AZ) silver from vows,(BA) and all silver voluntarily given(BB) for the Lord’s temple— 5 each priest is to take it from his assessor[h] and repair whatever damage is found in the temple.”[i](BC)

6 But by the twenty-third year(BD) of the reign of King Joash, the priests had not repaired the damage[j] to the temple.(BE) 7 So King Joash called the priest Jehoiada(BF) and the other priests and asked, “Why haven’t you repaired the temple’s damage? Since you haven’t, don’t take any silver from your assessors; instead, hand it over for the repair of the temple.” 8 So the priests agreed that they would receive no silver from the people and would not be the ones to repair the temple’s damage.

9 Then the priest Jehoiada took a chest,(BG) bored a hole in its lid, and set it beside the altar on the right side as one enters the Lord’s temple; the priests who guarded the threshold put into the chest all the silver that was brought to the Lord’s temple.(BH) 10 Whenever they saw there was a large amount of silver in the chest, the king’s secretary(BI) and the high priest would go bag up and tally the silver found in the Lord’s temple.(BJ) 11 Then they would give the weighed silver to those doing the work—those who oversaw the Lord’s temple. They in turn would pay it out to those working on the Lord’s temple—the carpenters, the builders, 12 the masons, and the stonecutters—and would use it to buy timber and quarried stone to repair the damage to the Lord’s temple(BK) and for all expenses for temple repairs.

13 However, no silver bowls, wick trimmers, sprinkling basins, trumpets, or any articles of gold or silver(BL) were made for the Lord’s temple from the contributions[k] brought to the Lord’s temple. 14 Instead, it was given to those doing the work, and they repaired the Lord’s temple with it. 15 No accounting was required from the men who received the silver to pay those doing the work, since they worked with integrity.(BM) 16 The silver from the guilt offering and the sin offering was not brought to the Lord’s temple since it belonged to the priests.(BN)

Aramean Invasion of Judah

17 At that time King Hazael(BO) of Aram marched up and fought against Gath and captured it. Then he planned to attack Jerusalem.(BP) 18 So King Joash of Judah took all the items consecrated by himself and by his ancestors—Judah’s kings Jehoshaphat, Jehoram, and Ahaziah—as well as all the gold found in the treasuries of the Lord’s temple and in the king’s palace, and he sent them to King Hazael of Aram.(BQ) Then Hazael withdrew from Jerusalem.

Joash Assassinated

19 The rest of the events of Joash’s reign, along with all his accomplishments, are written in the Historical Record of Judah’s Kings.(BR) 20 Joash’s servants conspired against him and attacked him(BS) at Beth-millo(BT) on the road that goes down to Silla. 21 It was his servants Jozabad[l] son of Shimeath and Jehozabad son of Shomer who attacked him. He died(BU) and they buried him with his ancestors in the city of David, and his son Amaziah became king in his place.(BV)

Acts 18:1-22

Founding the Corinthian Church

18 After this, he[a] left Athens and went to Corinth,(A) 2 where he found a Jew named Aquila,(B) a native of Pontus, who had recently come from Italy with his wife Priscilla because Claudius had ordered all the Jews to leave Rome. Paul came to them, 3 and since they were of the same occupation, tentmakers by trade,(C) he stayed with them and worked. 4 He reasoned in the synagogue every Sabbath and tried to persuade both Jews and Greeks.(D)

5 When Silas and Timothy arrived from Macedonia, Paul devoted himself to preaching the word[b] and testified to the Jews that Jesus is the Messiah.(E) 6 When they resisted and blasphemed,(F) he shook out his clothes(G) and told them, “Your blood is on your own heads!(H) I am innocent.[c] From now on I will go to the Gentiles.”(I) 7 So he left there and went to the house of a man named Titius Justus, a worshiper of God, whose house was next door to the synagogue. 8 Crispus, the leader of the synagogue, believed in the Lord, along with his whole household.(J) Many of the Corinthians, when they heard, believed and were baptized.

9 The Lord said to Paul in a night vision, “Don’t be afraid, but keep on speaking and don’t be silent. 10 For I am with you, and no one will lay a hand on you to hurt you, because I have many people in this city.”(K) 11 He stayed there a year and a half, teaching the word of God among them.

12 While Gallio was proconsul of Achaia, the Jews made a united attack against Paul and brought him to the tribunal.(L) 13 “This man,” they said, “is persuading people to worship God in ways contrary to the law.”

14 As Paul was about to open his mouth, Gallio said to the Jews, “If it were a matter of wrongdoing or of a serious crime, it would be reasonable for me to put up with you Jews. 15 But if these are questions about words, names, and your own law, see to it yourselves. I refuse to be a judge of such things.”(M) 16 So he drove them from the tribunal. 17 And they all[d] seized Sosthenes,(N) the leader of the synagogue, and beat him in front of the tribunal, but none of these things mattered to Gallio.

The Return Trip to Antioch

18 After staying for some time, Paul said farewell to the brothers and sisters and sailed away to Syria, accompanied by Priscilla and Aquila. He shaved his head at Cenchreae because of a vow he had taken.(O) 19 When they reached Ephesus(P) he left them there, but he himself entered the synagogue and debated with the Jews. 20 When they asked him to stay for a longer time, he declined, 21 but he said farewell and added,[e] “I’ll come back to you again, if God wills.”(Q) Then he set sail from Ephesus.

22 On landing at Caesarea, he went up to Jerusalem and greeted the church, then went down to Antioch.(R)

Praising God’s Greatness

1 I[a] exalt you, my God the King,
and bless your name forever and ever.(A)
2 I will bless you every day;
I will praise your name forever and ever.(B)

3 The Lord is great and is highly praised;(C)
his greatness is unsearchable.(D)
4 One generation will declare your works to the next
and will proclaim your mighty acts.(E)
5 I[b] will speak of your splendor and glorious majesty
and[c] your wondrous works.(F)
6 They will proclaim the power of your awe-inspiring acts,
and I will declare your greatness.[d](G)
7 They will give a testimony of your great goodness

Today is the 26th day of June, welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I’m Brian, it’s great to be here with you, it’s always special as we greet a brand-new shiny sparkly week. And just realize that there is grace for this, it’s a brand-new start and there is so much for us to discover, so much life for us to live, as we walk in the presence of our Father, and he Father’s us through this life. And it’s great to be here with you, excited for this new week out in front of us. This week we will read from the Christian Standard Bible, and of course and pick up the story where we left off, which leads us back into the book of second Kings, today chapter 9 verse 14 through 10 verse 31.

Prayer:

Father, we thank You for Your word, it is the Scripture that draw us together in community and so we thank You, we wouldn’t be here without the Scriptures, they’re would be not point. So, we thank You for the Scriptures in our lives and what they mean to us. And we thank You for this brand-new week, that we get to live into the Scriptures, and we get to learn from and apply to our lives, what You are saying through the word of God. And so, we thank You for that that, we invite you into every aspect of this week. May we be awake and aware and walk with you in every respect as we tell the story of this week. Come Holy Spirit we pray, in the name of Jesus we ask. Amen.

2 Kings 9:14-10:31

14 Then Jehu son of Jehoshaphat, son of Nimshi, conspired against Joram.(A) Joram and all Israel had been at Ramoth-gilead on guard against King Hazael of Aram. 15 But King Joram had returned to Jezreel to recover from the wounds that the Arameans had inflicted on him when he fought against Aram’s King Hazael. Jehu said, “If you commanders wish to make me king,[a] then don’t let anyone escape from the city to go tell about it in Jezreel.”

Jehu Kills Joram and Ahaziah

16 Jehu got into his chariot and went to Jezreel since Joram was laid up there and King Ahaziah of Judah had gone down to visit Joram. 17 Now the watchman(B) was standing on the tower in Jezreel. He saw Jehu’s mob approaching and shouted, “I see a mob!”

Joram responded, “Choose a rider and send him to meet them and have him ask, ‘Do you come in peace?’” (C)

18 So a horseman went to meet Jehu and said, “This is what the king asks: ‘Do you come in peace?’”

Jehu replied, “What do you have to do with peace? Fall in behind me.”

The watchman reported, “The messenger reached them but hasn’t started back.”

19 So he sent out a second horseman, who went to them and said, “This is what the king asks: ‘Do you come in peace?’”

Jehu answered, “What do you have to do with peace? Fall in behind me.”

20 Again the watchman reported, “He reached them but hasn’t started back. Also, the driving is like that of Jehu son of Nimshi(D)—he drives like a madman.”

21 “Get the chariot ready!” Joram shouted, and they got it ready. Then King Joram of Israel and King Ahaziah of Judah set out, each in his own chariot, and met Jehu at the plot of land of Naboth the Jezreelite.(E) 22 When Joram saw Jehu he asked, “Do you come in peace, Jehu?”

He answered, “What peace can there be as long as there is so much prostitution and sorcery from your mother Jezebel?” (F)

23 Joram turned around and fled, shouting to Ahaziah, “It’s treachery,(G) Ahaziah!”

24 Then Jehu drew his bow and shot Joram between the shoulders. The arrow went through his heart, and he slumped down in his chariot.(H) 25 Jehu said to Bidkar his aide, “Pick him up and throw him on the plot of ground belonging to Naboth the Jezreelite.(I) For remember when you and I were riding side by side behind his father Ahab, and the Lord uttered this pronouncement against him: 26 ‘As surely as I saw the blood of Naboth and the blood of his sons yesterday’—this is the Lord’s declaration—‘so will I repay you on this plot of land’—this is the Lord’s declaration. So now, according to the word of the Lord, pick him up and throw him on the plot of land.”(J)

27 When King Ahaziah of Judah saw what was happening, he fled up the road toward Beth-haggan. Jehu pursued him, shouting, “Shoot him too!” So they shot him in his chariot[b] at Gur Pass near Ibleam,(K) but he fled to Megiddo(L) and died there.(M) 28 Then his servants carried him to Jerusalem in a chariot and buried him in his ancestors’ tomb in the city of David.(N) 29 It was in the eleventh year of Joram son of Ahab that Ahaziah had become king over Judah.(O)

Jehu Kills Jezebel

30 When Jehu came to Jezreel, Jezebel heard about it, so she painted her eyes,(P) fixed her hair,[c] and looked down from the window. 31 As Jehu entered the city gate, she said, “Do you come in peace, Zimri,(Q) killer of your master?”

32 He looked up toward the window and said, “Who is on my side? Who?” Two or three eunuchs(R) looked down at him, 33 and he said, “Throw her down!” So they threw her down, and some of her blood splattered on the wall and on the horses, and Jehu rode over her.(S)

34 Then he went in, ate and drank, and said, “Take care of this cursed(T) woman and bury her, since she’s a king’s daughter.”(U) 35 But when they went out to bury her, they did not find anything but the skull, the feet, and the hands. 36 So they went back and told him, and he said, “This fulfills the Lord’s word that he spoke through his servant Elijah the Tishbite: ‘In the plot of land at Jezreel, the dogs will eat Jezebel’s flesh.(V) 37 Jezebel’s corpse will be like manure(W) on the surface of the ground in the plot of land at Jezreel so that no one will be able to say: This is Jezebel.’”

Jehu Kills the House of Ahab

10 Since Ahab had seventy sons in Samaria,(X) Jehu wrote letters and sent them to Samaria to the rulers of Jezreel,(Y) to the elders, and to the guardians of Ahab’s sons,[d] saying:

2 Your master’s sons are with you, and you have chariots, horses, a fortified city, and weaponry, so when this letter(Z) arrives 3 select the most qualified[e] of your master’s sons, set him on his father’s throne, and fight for your master’s house.

4 However, they were terrified and reasoned, “Look, two kings(AA) couldn’t stand against him; how can we?”

5 So the overseer of the palace, the overseer of the city, the elders, and the guardians sent a message to Jehu: “We are your servants, and we will do whatever you tell us. We will not make anyone king. Do whatever you think is right.”[f](AB)

6 Then Jehu wrote them a second letter, saying:

If you are on my side, and if you will obey me, bring me the heads of your master’s sons[g] at this time tomorrow at Jezreel.

All seventy of the king’s sons were being cared for by the city’s prominent men. 7 When the letter came to them, they took the king’s sons and slaughtered all seventy, put their heads in baskets, and sent them to Jehu at Jezreel. 8 When the messenger came and told him, “They have brought the heads of the king’s sons,” the king said, “Pile them in two heaps at the entrance of the city gate until morning.”

9 The next morning when he went out and stood at the gate, he said to all the people, “You are innocent. It was I who conspired against my master and killed him.(AC) But who struck down all these? 10 Know, then, that not a word the Lord spoke against the house of Ahab will fail,(AD) for the Lord has done what he promised through his servant Elijah.”(AE) 11 So Jehu killed all who remained of the house of Ahab in Jezreel—all his great men, close friends, and priests—leaving him no survivors.

12 Then he set out and went to Samaria. On the way, while he was at Beth-eked of the Shepherds, 13 Jehu met the relatives of King Ahaziah of Judah and asked, “Who are you?”

They answered, “We’re Ahaziah’s(AF) relatives. We’ve come down to greet the king’s sons and the queen mother’s(AG) sons.”

14 Then Jehu ordered, “Take them alive.” So they took them alive and then slaughtered them at the pit of Beth-eked—forty-two men. He didn’t spare any of them.(AH)

15 When he left there, he found Jehonadab son of Rechab(AI) coming to meet him. He greeted him and then asked, “Is your heart one with mine?” [h]

“It is,” Jehonadab replied.

Jehu said, “If it is,[i] give me your hand.”(AJ)

So he gave him his hand, and Jehu pulled him up into the chariot with him. 16 Then he said, “Come with me and see my zeal(AK) for the Lord!” So he let him ride with him in his chariot. 17 When Jehu came to Samaria, he struck down all who remained from the house of Ahab in Samaria until he had annihilated his house, according to the word of the Lord spoken to Elijah.(AL)

Jehu Kills the Baal Worshipers

18 Then Jehu brought all the people together and said to them, “Ahab served Baal(AM) a little, but Jehu will serve him a lot. 19 Now, therefore, summon to me all the prophets of Baal, all his servants, and all his priests.(AN) None must be missing, for I have a great sacrifice for Baal. Whoever is missing will not live.” However, Jehu was acting deceptively in order to destroy the servants of Baal. 20 Jehu commanded, “Consecrate a solemn assembly(AO) for Baal.” So they called one.

21 Then Jehu sent messengers throughout all Israel, and all the servants of Baal[j] came; no one failed to come.(AP) They entered the temple of Baal,(AQ) and it was filled from one end to the other. 22 Then he said to the custodian of the wardrobe, “Bring out the garments for all the servants of Baal.” So he brought out their garments.

23 Then Jehu and Jehonadab son of Rechab entered the temple of Baal, and Jehu said to the servants of Baal, “Look carefully to see that there are no servants of the Lord here among you—only servants of Baal.” 24 Then they went in to offer sacrifices and burnt offerings.

Now Jehu had stationed eighty men outside, and he warned them, “Whoever allows any of the men I am placing in your hands to escape will forfeit his life for theirs.”(AR) 25 When he finished offering the burnt offering, Jehu said to the guards and officers, “Go in and kill them. Don’t let anyone out.”(AS) So they struck them down with the sword. Then the guards and officers threw the bodies out and went into the inner room of the temple of Baal. 26 They brought out the pillar of the temple of Baal and burned it, 27 and they tore down the pillar(AT) of Baal. Then they tore down the temple of Baal and made it a latrine(AU)—which it still is today.

Evaluation of Jehu’s Reign

28 Jehu eliminated Baal worship from Israel, 29 but he did not turn away from the sins that Jeroboam son of Nebat had caused Israel to commit—worshiping the gold calves that were in Bethel and Dan.(AV) 30 Nevertheless, the Lord said to Jehu, “Because you have done well in carrying out what is right in my sight and have done to the house of Ahab all that was in my heart, four generations of your sons will sit on the throne of Israel.”(AW)

31 Yet Jehu was not careful to follow the instruction of the Lord God of Israel with all his heart. He did not turn from the sins that Jeroboam had caused Israel to commit.

Acts 17

A Short Ministry in Thessalonica

17 After they passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica,(A) where there was a Jewish synagogue. 2 As usual, Paul went into the synagogue, and on three Sabbath days reasoned with them from the Scriptures,(B) 3 explaining and proving that it was necessary for the Messiah to suffer and rise from the dead: “This Jesus I am proclaiming to you is the Messiah.”(C) 4 Some of them were persuaded and joined Paul and Silas, including a large number of God-fearing Greeks, as well as a number of the leading women.(D)

Riot in the City

5 But the Jews became jealous, and they brought together some wicked men from the marketplace, formed a mob, and started a riot in the city. Attacking Jason’s house, they searched for them to bring them out to the public assembly.(E) 6 When they did not find them, they dragged Jason and some of the brothers before the city officials, shouting, “These men who have turned the world upside down have come here too, 7 and Jason has welcomed them. They are all acting contrary to Caesar’s decrees,(F) saying that there is another king—Jesus.”(G) 8 The crowd and city officials who heard these things were upset. 9 After taking a security bond from Jason and the others, they released them.

The Bereans Search the Scriptures

10 As soon as it was night, the brothers and sisters sent Paul and Silas away to Berea.(H) Upon arrival, they went into the synagogue of the Jews. 11 The people here were of more noble character than those in Thessalonica, since they received the word with eagerness and examined[a] the Scriptures(I) daily to see if these things were so. 12 Consequently, many of them believed, including a number of the prominent Greek women as well as men. 13 But when the Jews from Thessalonica found out that the word of God had been proclaimed by Paul at Berea, they came there too, agitating and upsetting[b] the crowds. 14 Then the brothers and sisters immediately sent Paul away to go to the coast, but Silas and Timothy(J) stayed on there. 15 Those who escorted Paul brought him as far as Athens, and after receiving instructions for Silas and Timothy to come to him as quickly as possible, they departed.(K)

16 While Paul was waiting for them in Athens, he was deeply distressed when he saw that the city was full of idols. 17 So he reasoned in the synagogue with the Jews and with those who worshiped God, as well as in the marketplace every day with those who happened to be there.(L) 18 Some of the Epicurean and Stoic philosophers also debated with him. Some said, “What is this ignorant show-off[c] trying to say?”

Others replied, “He seems to be a preacher of foreign deities”—because he was telling the good news about Jesus and the resurrection.(M)

19 They took him and brought him to the Areopagus,[d] and said, “May we learn about this new teaching you are presenting?(N) 20 Because what you say sounds strange to us, and we want to know what these things mean.” 21 Now all the Athenians and the foreigners residing there spent their time on nothing else but telling or hearing something new.

22 Paul stood in the middle of the Areopagus and said, “People of Athens! I see that you are extremely religious in every respect. 23 For as I was passing through and observing the objects of your worship, I even found an altar on which was inscribed, ‘To an Unknown God.’ Therefore, what you worship in ignorance, this I proclaim to you. 24 The God who made the world and everything in it(O)—he is Lord of heaven and earth(P)—does not live in shrines made by hands.(Q) 25 Neither is he served by human hands, as though he needed anything,(R) since he himself gives everyone life and breath and all things.(S) 26 From one man[e] he has made every nationality to live over the whole earth and has determined their appointed times and the boundaries of where they live.(T) 27 He did this so that they might seek God, and perhaps they might reach out and find him, though he is not far from each one of us.(U) 28 For in him we live and move and have our being, as even some of your own poets have said, ‘For we are also his offspring.’(V) 29 Since, then, we are God’s offspring, we shouldn’t think that the divine nature is like gold or silver or stone, an image fashioned by human art and imagination.(W)

30 “Therefore, having overlooked(X) the times of ignorance, God now commands all people everywhere to repent, 31 because he has set a day when he is going to judge the world in righteousness by the man he has appointed. He has provided proof of this to everyone by raising him from the dead.”(Y)

32 When they heard about the resurrection of the dead, some began to ridicule him, but others said, “We’d like to hear from you again about this.” 33 So Paul left their presence. 34 However, some people joined him and believed, including Dionysius the Areopagite, a woman named Damaris, and others with them.

A King’s Prayer

Of David.

1 Blessed be the Lord, my rock(A)
who trains my hands for battle
and my fingers for warfare.(B)
2 He is my faithful love and my fortress,
my stronghold and my deliverer.
He is my shield,(C) and I take refuge in him;(D)

3 Lord, what is a human that you care for him,

4 A human is like a breath;
his days are like a passing shadow.(G)

5 Lord, part your heavens and come down.(H)
Touch the mountains, and they will smoke.(I)

Today is the 25th day of June welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I’m it’s great to be here with you today as we bring another week to its conclusion and take the next step forward in the Scriptures. We have been working our way through the book of second Kings in the Old Testament. So, that is the next step forward because that’s where we left off. So, we’re reading from the New International Version this week. Second Kings chapter 8 verse 1 through 9, verse 13.

Prayer:

Father, we thank You for Your word. We thank You for another week in Your word. We thank You for bringing us through another week of life. And, so, now we are at this point where we look back. So often as we begin a week we look forward and see this week out in front of us that has yet to be written, a story has yet to be told. But here we are at the end of the week looking back at that very week that we looked at and now we can see. Did we walk with You? Did we cling to You? We can certainly see that You have brought us through. And, so, we are grateful, and we mark this moment. We are grateful that You have sustained us and that You will guide us by the power of Your Holy Spirit. So, as we release this week and prepare our hearts for the next one, we come with a grateful heart into Your presence thanking You for all of the days that have gone before that You have brought us through and all the days that are yet before us that You will bring us through. Lead us, teach us, guide us, correct us. Lead us into the truth we pray. In Jesus’ name we ask. Amen.

It’s our own little Daily Audio Bible holiday and it’s something that we call the Daily Audio Bible long walk. And I was talking several days ago. I think this is the 14th year of doing the Daily Audio Bible long walk. So, we’ve been at this for a while. It’s super simple to participate in this little Global Campfire holiday. It’s a day that finds itself very near the center of the year. So, here we are moving through the center of the year, and this is a time to carve out a little bit of time. Some time for reflection, maybe some time for pre-flexion, time for us to look forward and look back and recognize the grace of God in our lives through all of it. It’s an opportunity to go out into nature, whether near or far. Maybe down the block from where you live is a park and that’s where you love to go. Great! Maybe you have a favorite spot, t’s a couple hours away and you carved out the day for this, a day to be with God and go for a long walk and be able to pour out everything that’s in your heart and have no hurry, no rush, not…no alarms going off, no deadlines going off. Time, space, to drink in the beauty and allow the beauty of creation to be restorative to us, to pour out our hearts and have space and time and silence to allow God to fill us again and speak back and aim us in the direction that we should go. It has…I mean I have done it all of these years and it has paid huge dividends in my life and resetting and not just barreling through like we are prone to do. But resetting. Resetting some priorities. Looking at what the second half of the year is supposed to look like. And that part that I said, emptying out our hearts, being able to just not be in a rush, to be able to say everything that comes to mind, everything that’s in our hearts and listen back. It’s beautiful. And, so, yeah, that’s the thing that we do by ourselves with God but it’s something that thousands of us are doing together on the same day all over the earth. And, so, it’s a community experience as well. We post a Daily Audio Bible long walk post on the Daily Audio Bible Facebook page and invite everybody, like wherever you go, whatever it looks like, whatever your day is like, take a picture, shoot a video and come back and share your day, your story and all the sudden we have this beautiful mosaic of our community, little windows that open up into the beauty of God’s creation all over the earth. And I love it. And I’m looking forward to it. That is coming up the seventh day of July, so put that on your calendars.

Hi DAB family this is Larabell from the Arab United Emirates. I’m just praying over some prayers please. So, my husband did vasectomy many years ago many years ago before we met each other. Before we got married, we agreed that we wanted to have children of our own. So, he did a surgery to undo the vasectomy and then we’ve been trying for a child without success. Then when he went to…to…went for checkup he found out that the tubes had…they’re blocked, the tubes were blocked again, and we don’t know how and the surgery was a very painful process for him. I don’t want him to go through that again so we decided to go for IVF. We literally used our last savings to do the IVF and…and we had…I was pregnant with twins, a boy and a girl and we lost the babies. Their names are Destin and Destiny. We lost the pregnancy. Now my husband hasn’t worked for a long time since COVID, and we lost a lot of money that we invested in Ukraine because of the war. We literally used our last money for this, and we are in a long-distance relationship. He’ll be coming to visit again soon. We don’t have the money to do the IVF again. We don’t know when or how we will have it, but I believe in miracles. I just wish that by some miracle I could take in. I…I don’t know if it’s too much to ask but I just want…I just want our babies and I know God can do it for us. So, please pray for us. Would you pray for us please?

Hi this is Red. Hey I’m calling in reply to Brian from Florida who had a great job, has a great job and because of stress and not seeing his family he’s thinking about making a change. And a lot of his friends think he’s crazy because of the money he is making. Well, I’m gonna tell you from experience Brian I’ve been faced with that three times. First time I changed jobs I had to take a $25,000 pay cut and then I was a firefighter chief. I retired from that job and last 15,000 and then another time a company bought up a company I was with, and I had taken another 15,000. And all those times it was hard, and it was tight, but we prayed to make the right choice and God came through each time. So, when there was a firefighter I did that for 40 years and 18 is a Fire Chief in a small community, lots of calls. I don’t know how many birthdays, anniversaries, thanksgivings, Christmases I missed because I was out on the runs. And you can’t get that back. Family is important and money cannot buy any of that time back. I’m trying to make it up with the grand babies, but you just can’t get that back. So, let’s pray OK. Father give Brian the wisdom the knowledge and the discernment to make the right choice. Let him know that you’re always faithful. You’re amazing. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Hey everybody this is Jonathan from Denver. I just wanted to call in and kind of follow up, give a little bit of an update and praise report. I think I last called in near the beginning of the month maybe end of May and I was really struggling feeling kind of left behind and like I had wandered off too far. And just this week I’m really experiencing a turning around and it feels like my heart is being softened. Feels like things are getting easier, feels like even when I run into day-to-day challenges, I am not forgetting that Christ is there for me. So, I just wanted to thank you all for your prayers know that I’m listening and I’m praying for you. I’m a few days left behind but I’m getting caught up and I love you all. Thank you so much.

Hi this is Pure Heart from Tennessee and I just wanted to call in to pray for Aaron in New York State that had just been diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Aaron I just wanted to say that the Holy Spirit did something to me as you were telling your story and you said that you just want to walk the path, whatever path God had for you. Man, it’s like something just burned from the inside out. Not sure what it meant but I mean it hit me like a ton of bricks and I just want to pray for you right now. God, I just thank You that You are the great physician. I thank You that there’s nothing too hard for You. And Father God I thank You that when man say no You can still say yes, that You are the author and finisher of our faith. Lord You’re our creator and Your word Father God tells us that You know our beginning and our end. It’s not up to man. And Father I just pray right now Father that You would just heal Aaron, just confound the doctors in the name of Jesus. Lord, I ask You to touch whatever they thought they’d seen in Aaron and just make it disappear in Jesus’ name. Lord, I stand with my DAB family and asking in faith Father God that You would just work a miracle for Your glory Father God and for Aaron’s good. Lord, I pray over…

Katie calling from Boston this message is for you. This is Simone calling in from Houston and I want to encourage you. When I tell you baby girl that God is a mind stabilizer, He can do that. I am 46 years old, and I have fought depression for over 30 years. Less than ten years ago I attempted to take my life. It has been difficult; it has been hard. I was on five or six different medications for depression because they didn’t know what it was because it was so severe. And I challenged God. I went to Him, and I said, you know, this is Your word, this is…You said…You told me that there’s nothing wrong with me so I’m going to believe You and stand in Your word. I found an amazing therapist. I did talk therapy and I just learned how to hold steadfast to God’s word. And today, over 10 years later I have not taken a single medication for depression and my bouts are less and less and when they do happen it’s not as long, maybe a day. So, just trust and believe that God can heal you and deliver you from it. I am proof. I am praying for you. Please continue to stand on His word. Stand on His word, stand on His word. Keep coming back here for encouragement. Just immerse yourself in the word of God and just hold onto His word because, you know, He will provide everything that you need and He will deliver, and He will heal. And His word again will not come back to him void. So, I will definitely keep you in prayer because I understand your fight. And stay encouraged sweet girl. Praying for you.

The Shunammite’s Land Restored

8 Now Elisha had said to the woman(A) whose son he had restored to life, “Go away with your family and stay for a while wherever you can, because the Lord has decreed a famine(B) in the land that will last seven years.”(C) 2 The woman proceeded to do as the man of God said. She and her family went away and stayed in the land of the Philistines seven years.

3 At the end of the seven years she came back from the land of the Philistines and went to appeal to the king for her house and land. 4 The king was talking to Gehazi, the servant of the man of God, and had said, “Tell me about all the great things Elisha has done.” 5 Just as Gehazi was telling the king how Elisha had restored(D) the dead to life, the woman whose son Elisha had brought back to life came to appeal to the king for her house and land.

Gehazi said, “This is the woman, my lord the king, and this is her son whom Elisha restored to life.” 6 The king asked the woman about it, and she told him.

Then he assigned an official to her case and said to him, “Give back everything that belonged to her, including all the income from her land from the day she left the country until now.”

Hazael Murders Ben-Hadad

7 Elisha went to Damascus,(E) and Ben-Hadad(F) king of Aram was ill. When the king was told, “The man of God has come all the way up here,” 8 he said to Hazael,(G) “Take a gift(H) with you and go to meet the man of God. Consult(I) the Lord through him; ask him, ‘Will I recover from this illness?’”

9 Hazael went to meet Elisha, taking with him as a gift forty camel-loads of all the finest wares of Damascus. He went in and stood before him, and said, “Your son Ben-Hadad king of Aram has sent me to ask, ‘Will I recover from this illness?’”

10 Elisha answered, “Go and say to him, ‘You will certainly recover.’(J) Nevertheless,[a] the Lord has revealed to me that he will in fact die.” 11 He stared at him with a fixed gaze until Hazael was embarrassed.(K) Then the man of God began to weep.(L)

12 “Why is my lord weeping?” asked Hazael.

“Because I know the harm(M) you will do to the Israelites,” he answered. “You will set fire to their fortified places, kill their young men with the sword, dash(N) their little children(O) to the ground, and rip open(P) their pregnant women.”

13 Hazael said, “How could your servant, a mere dog,(Q) accomplish such a feat?”

“The Lord has shown me that you will become king(R) of Aram,” answered Elisha.

14 Then Hazael left Elisha and returned to his master. When Ben-Hadad asked, “What did Elisha say to you?” Hazael replied, “He told me that you would certainly recover.” 15 But the next day he took a thick cloth, soaked it in water and spread it over the king’s face, so that he died.(S) Then Hazael succeeded him as king.

Jehoram King of Judah(T)

16 In the fifth year of Joram(U) son of Ahab king of Israel, when Jehoshaphat was king of Judah, Jehoram(V) son of Jehoshaphat began his reign as king of Judah. 17 He was thirty-two years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem eight years. 18 He followed the ways of the kings of Israel, as the house of Ahab had done, for he married a daughter(W) of Ahab. He did evil in the eyes of the Lord. 19 Nevertheless, for the sake of his servant David, the Lord was not willing to destroy(X) Judah. He had promised to maintain a lamp(Y) for David and his descendants forever.

20 In the time of Jehoram, Edom rebelled against Judah and set up its own king.(Z) 21 So Jehoram[b] went to Zair with all his chariots. The Edomites surrounded him and his chariot commanders, but he rose up and broke through by night; his army, however, fled back home. 22 To this day Edom has been in rebellion(AA) against Judah. Libnah(AB) revolted at the same time.

23 As for the other events of Jehoram’s reign, and all he did, are they not written in the book of the annals of the kings of Judah? 24 Jehoram rested with his ancestors and was buried with them in the City of David. And Ahaziah his son succeeded him as king.

Ahaziah King of Judah(AC)

25 In the twelfth(AD) year of Joram son of Ahab king of Israel, Ahaziah son of Jehoram king of Judah began to reign. 26 Ahaziah was twenty-two years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem one year. His mother’s name was Athaliah,(AE) a granddaughter of Omri(AF) king of Israel. 27 He followed the ways of the house of Ahab(AG) and did evil(AH) in the eyes of the Lord, as the house of Ahab had done, for he was related by marriage to Ahab’s family.

28 Ahaziah went with Joram son of Ahab to war against Hazael king of Aram at Ramoth Gilead.(AI) The Arameans wounded Joram; 29 so King Joram returned to Jezreel(AJ) to recover from the wounds the Arameans had inflicted on him at Ramoth[c] in his battle with Hazael(AK) king of Aram.

Then Ahaziah(AL) son of Jehoram king of Judah went down to Jezreel to see Joram son of Ahab, because he had been wounded.

Jehu Anointed King of Israel

9 The prophet Elisha summoned a man from the company(AM) of the prophets and said to him, “Tuck your cloak into your belt,(AN) take this flask of olive oil(AO) with you and go to Ramoth Gilead.(AP) 2 When you get there, look for Jehu son of Jehoshaphat, the son of Nimshi. Go to him, get him away from his companions and take him into an inner room. 3 Then take the flask and pour the oil(AQ) on his head and declare, ‘This is what the Lord says: I anoint you king over Israel.’ Then open the door and run; don’t delay!”

4 So the young prophet went to Ramoth Gilead. 5 When he arrived, he found the army officers sitting together. “I have a message for you, commander,” he said.

“For which of us?” asked Jehu.

“For you, commander,” he replied.

6 Jehu got up and went into the house. Then the prophet poured the oil(AR) on Jehu’s head and declared, “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘I anoint you king over the Lord’s people Israel. 7 You are to destroy the house of Ahab your master, and I will avenge(AS) the blood of my servants(AT) the prophets and the blood of all the Lord’s servants shed by Jezebel.(AU) 8 The whole house(AV) of Ahab will perish. I will cut off from Ahab every last male(AW) in Israel—slave or free.[d] 9 I will make the house of Ahab like the house of Jeroboam(AX) son of Nebat and like the house of Baasha(AY) son of Ahijah. 10 As for Jezebel, dogs(AZ) will devour her on the plot of ground at Jezreel, and no one will bury her.’” Then he opened the door and ran.

11 When Jehu went out to his fellow officers, one of them asked him, “Is everything all right? Why did this maniac(BA) come to you?”

“You know the man and the sort of things he says,” Jehu replied.

12 “That’s not true!” they said. “Tell us.”

Jehu said, “Here is what he told me: ‘This is what the Lord says: I anoint you king over Israel.’”

13 They quickly took their cloaks and spread(BB) them under him on the bare steps. Then they blew the trumpet(BC) and shouted, “Jehu is king!”

Acts 16:16-40

Paul and Silas in Prison

16 Once when we were going to the place of prayer,(A) we were met by a female slave who had a spirit(B) by which she predicted the future. She earned a great deal of money for her owners by fortune-telling. 17 She followed Paul and the rest of us, shouting, “These men are servants of the Most High God,(C) who are telling you the way to be saved.” 18 She kept this up for many days. Finally Paul became so annoyed that he turned around and said to the spirit, “In the name of Jesus Christ I command you to come out of her!” At that moment the spirit left her.(D)

19 When her owners realized that their hope of making money(E) was gone, they seized Paul and Silas(F) and dragged(G) them into the marketplace to face the authorities. 20 They brought them before the magistrates and said, “These men are Jews, and are throwing our city into an uproar(H) 21 by advocating customs unlawful for us Romans(I) to accept or practice.”(J)

22 The crowd joined in the attack against Paul and Silas, and the magistrates ordered them to be stripped and beaten with rods.(K) 23 After they had been severely flogged, they were thrown into prison, and the jailer(L) was commanded to guard them carefully. 24 When he received these orders, he put them in the inner cell and fastened their feet in the stocks.(M)

25 About midnight(N) Paul and Silas(O) were praying and singing hymns(P) to God, and the other prisoners were listening to them. 26 Suddenly there was such a violent earthquake that the foundations of the prison were shaken.(Q) At once all the prison doors flew open,(R) and everyone’s chains came loose.(S) 27 The jailer woke up, and when he saw the prison doors open, he drew his sword and was about to kill himself because he thought the prisoners had escaped.(T) 28 But Paul shouted, “Don’t harm yourself! We are all here!”

29 The jailer called for lights, rushed in and fell trembling before Paul and Silas.(U) 30 He then brought them out and asked, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?”(V)

31 They replied, “Believe(W) in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved(X)—you and your household.”(Y) 32 Then they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all the others in his house. 33 At that hour of the night(Z) the jailer took them and washed their wounds; then immediately he and all his household were baptized.(AA) 34 The jailer brought them into his house and set a meal before them; he(AB) was filled with joy because he had come to believe in God—he and his whole household.

35 When it was daylight, the magistrates sent their officers to the jailer with the order: “Release those men.” 36 The jailer(AC) told Paul, “The magistrates have ordered that you and Silas be released. Now you can leave. Go in peace.”(AD)

37 But Paul said to the officers: “They beat us publicly without a trial, even though we are Roman citizens,(AE) and threw us into prison. And now do they want to get rid of us quietly? No! Let them come themselves and escort us out.”

38 The officers reported this to the magistrates, and when they heard that Paul and Silas were Roman citizens, they were alarmed.(AF) 39 They came to appease them and escorted them from the prison, requesting them to leave the city.(AG) 40 After Paul and Silas came out of the prison, they went to Lydia’s house,(AH) where they met with the brothers and sisters(AI) and encouraged them. Then they left.

2 Kings 6:1-7:20, Acts 15:36-16:15, Psalms 142:1-7, Proverbs 17:24-25

Today is the 24th day of June, welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I’m Brian, it’s great to be here with you guys today, around the Global Campfire as we gather and move forward together, which takes us back to the spot that we left off and that is second Kings, at this point. And we are kinda traveling alongside the prophet Elisha, getting to know him as well, as well as all of the kings that reigned during his time, his lifetime, his ministry and so, let’s pick up the story second Kings chapters 6 and 7 today.

Commentary:

Okay, let’s go in reverse order today and start with the book of Acts and work our way back to what we’re reading in second Kings. I just want to point out what the Bible tells us in the book of Acts, and that is that, Paul and Barnabas got into a pretty significant argument. A pretty significant disagreement, to the point that they needed to part company, after they had traveled all over the Roman Empire, preaching the good news, they needed to part company and continue that work in the name of Jesus separately. And the disagreement, is over a person Mark, John Mark. Though very, very likely the author of the Gospel of Mark, the very first gospel ever written. So, Mark was on that first missionary journey but in the city of Pamphylia he left them and returned to his home and that struck Paul, really wrong. As if he wasn’t fully and completely devoted and so he didn’t want Mark on this second missionary journey. And so, they had a disagreement and that disagreement left them still passionate for the Gospel and still called to speak the Gospel and in fact, to travel throughout the known world and speak the Gospel but not together. And so, we are embarking on Paul’s second missionary journey and it’s a whole new cast. Paul is the same person but he won’t be traveling with Barnabas this time or Mark, he’ll be traveling with Silas. And we will continue to follow along with that missionary journey, as we continue with the book of Acts.

But now, back in the book of second Kings. So much happens in our reading today an ax head floats back to the top of the water, miraculously. The Aramaeans, who are wanting to kind of ambush and fight against Israel, they can’t really make their plans, because Elisha hears from the Lord what the plans are and the Israelites are prepared. So, the Aramaeans find out where Elisha is, surround the city and when Elisha’s assistant wakes up and sees the Army, he freaks out and of course Elisha asks for his eyes to be open and then he can see that there are more with them, than any number of Army that is against them. They are struck with blindness. So, the key, like they can’t understand exactly what’s going on. And so, Elisha, the person that they’re trying to capture comes out and says this is the wrong place and they believe him and he’s like, I’ll show you the right place and they believe him and he marches them right into the capital of Israel, which is the city of Samaria, the northern kingdom. And some, this Army gets inside the city walls and then their eyes are opened, right, and this should be like a mighty victory, this Army could be destroyed, they have nowhere to go, but instead what Elisha instructs is that they should have food and water and be sent back to their master. That actually ends the ambushes and the fighting by the bands of Aramaeans who come to raid the land. So, in other words, God shows up and deals with the problem in a way that only God can. The Aramaeans are shown mercy, at the same time that they’re shown the very power of the God of Israel, the most high God. And so, respect for the most high God and respect for the mercy that was shown ends the conflict. And then, we have the story of the Aramaeans coming back at a later time to besiege and take the city, the capital city of Samaria. And so, they’ve surrounded and blockaded the city and people are beginning to starve, like all the resources that were inside the city are depleted and no one can leave and go get more and so whatever’s in the city is what’s in the city. That’s what they would do, starve them out, weaken them, demoralize them, wait until they were weak and until they could break in and put…put up little resistance. And so, that’s what’s going on here. The King of Israel becomes so demoralized and frustrated that he decides, he’s not waiting on the Lord anymore, because the Lord isn’t showing up and he’s going to behead Elisha, the prophet of God. Elisha has advanced warning about this and he tells the king about this time tomorrow, essentially, about this time tomorrow, the problem will be over. Of course, that’s hard to believe, but that’s what happens and it’s really interesting, the lesson for us to learn and how this happened. There are four lepers outside the city, they can come into the city, but if they come into the city, they’re going to die like everybody else in the city. They’re lepers and so they’re not being picked on so much outside the city walls and they can kind of scrounge around but they’re still going to die eventually. And so, they decide really, they have three options in they’re all bad options and there’s only one option that has even the remotest chance that they could live and that is to surrender to the enemy. If the Aramaeans kill them, they were going to die anyway but if they live, maybe they can find a morsel of food and live. And so, that’s what they do, they go to the Aramaean camp to surrender and seek mercy and nobody’s there. And that’s fascinating because the Lord had given the sound of a mighty army coming and so they fled. It’s like a ghost village out there, this blockade that has been starving the city to death and putting people through unbelievable atrocity. It’s like a ghost town out there, there’s nobody there. And so, these men, they go into camp or into a tent and they eat and they plunder. And they go into another one and they get some more stuff and they hide the stuff. And it’s like, they have everything they could ever need. And then they realize, people are still starving just like they were starving, back in the city of Samaria people are dying and they look at each other and say some really fascinating things. What we’re doing is not right. This is a day of good news and we are keeping it to ourselves. The implications start to become apparent, because what’s going on here? These lepers have discovered that they have been rescued, that everybody can live. God has rescued them. And so, they’re enjoying the bounty, the benefit of being rescued and not having the fear that they had just moments before, but nobody else knows that. And they realize, it’s not right what we’re doing out here. This is a day of good news and we’re keeping it to ourselves. When we look at this through a spiritual lens, we have to realize that we were all surrounded and starving. And were going to be defeated and weakened and demoralized, our enemy was trying to stamp us out. And then we found out we were rescued and that the enemy has been banished and has no authority over us in any sort of way at all, anymore. We have been rescued forever and we can easily bask in that, when there are, there are people who are still starving and dying and are surrounded and don’t know that rescue is here. And so, we find ourselves, kind of with the same sentiment, what we’re doing isn’t right. This is a day of good news and we’re keeping it to ourselves. Something for us to think about, pretty strongly today. Maybe, even today, is the day to not keep it to ourselves.

Prayer:

And so, Holy Spirit, we invite You into that, we know that we have all been guilty of enjoying the blessing that You have poured down upon us, in the rescue of our very souls. And we can very, very easily, kinda think that we need to hoard that, that we have the out crowd and the in crowd, when what our role is, is to eliminate that, so that all can know, so that all might be rescued, so that we might be doing Your work in this world, telling the good news, that rescue is here and you don’t have to stay stranded behind these walls anymore. You can come out, freedom is here. Holy Spirit let this sink into us, so that we can understand that every thought, word and deed, everything about us is about You. Come, Jesus we pray, in your mighty name we ask. Amen.

Not only to awaken our senses to all the life that is happening around us and all that God has just showered us with that we mostly ignore, but also to regroup and reset, to actually have some time to speak out before the Lord everything that’s in our hearts, like the empty out everything that’s going on and have time to not leave anything back, like just to empty it out of us and to give space and time for God to respond and fill us again, anew, as we contemplate what the second half of the year is supposed to be aimed at. And it’s beautiful because we’re doing this for our own lives and our own relationship with God, but we’re not doing it alone, even though we’re doing it alone. We’re doing it alone with God but our brothers and sisters all over the world, around this Global Campfire are also enjoying the beauty of where they are, on this earth. And what makes it a community experience is that, we put a post on our Daily Audio Bible Facebook page, for the Long Walk and then invite everybody like, look while you’re out there, while you’re enjoying it, snap a picture, take a video, something to commemorate the day that you spent. And they’re so many of us who have pictures and videos like from…from years and years and years of doing this. Maybe this is your first year. This is where you start that collection of mementos, of remembrances, of the times that you set aside and go for a long walk with God and what that did to your life and to the rest of your year and we come back and share and post a picture, post a video, into that post and all of a sudden, we open windows into the world. Like beauty all over the earth, all over the earth, and then we get to share together, in each other’s stories. It’s a beautiful thing. I love it very much. It’s a treasure around here. And so, make plans for that on the seventh day of July, the Daily Audio Bible Long Walk. I’m looking forward to that.

The Daily Audio Bible Reading for Friday June 24, 2022 (NIV)

2 Kings 6-7

An Axhead Floats

6 The company(A) of the prophets said to Elisha, “Look, the place where we meet with you is too small for us. 2 Let us go to the Jordan, where each of us can get a pole; and let us build a place there for us to meet.”

And he said, “Go.”

3 Then one of them said, “Won’t you please come with your servants?”

“I will,” Elisha replied. 4 And he went with them.

They went to the Jordan and began to cut down trees. 5 As one of them was cutting down a tree, the iron axhead fell into the water. “Oh no, my lord!” he cried out. “It was borrowed!”

6 The man of God asked, “Where did it fall?” When he showed him the place, Elisha cut a stick and threw(B) it there, and made the iron float. 7 “Lift it out,” he said. Then the man reached out his hand and took it.

Elisha Traps Blinded Arameans

8 Now the king of Aram was at war with Israel. After conferring with his officers, he said, “I will set up my camp in such and such a place.”

9 The man of God sent word to the king(C) of Israel: “Beware of passing that place, because the Arameans are going down there.” 10 So the king of Israel checked on the place indicated by the man of God. Time and again Elisha warned(D) the king, so that he was on his guard in such places.

11 This enraged the king of Aram. He summoned his officers and demanded of them, “Tell me! Which of us is on the side of the king of Israel?”

12 “None of us, my lord the king(E),” said one of his officers, “but Elisha, the prophet who is in Israel, tells the king of Israel the very words you speak in your bedroom.”

13 “Go, find out where he is,” the king ordered, “so I can send men and capture him.” The report came back: “He is in Dothan.”(F) 14 Then he sent(G) horses and chariots and a strong force there. They went by night and surrounded the city.

15 When the servant of the man of God got up and went out early the next morning, an army with horses and chariots had surrounded the city. “Oh no, my lord! What shall we do?” the servant asked.

16 “Don’t be afraid,”(H) the prophet answered. “Those who are with us are more(I) than those who are with them.”

17 And Elisha prayed, “Open his eyes, Lord, so that he may see.” Then the Lord opened the servant’s eyes, and he looked and saw the hills full of horses and chariots(J) of fire all around Elisha.

18 As the enemy came down toward him, Elisha prayed to the Lord, “Strike this army with blindness.”(K) So he struck them with blindness, as Elisha had asked.

19 Elisha told them, “This is not the road and this is not the city. Follow me, and I will lead you to the man you are looking for.” And he led them to Samaria.

20 After they entered the city, Elisha said, “Lord, open the eyes of these men so they can see.” Then the Lord opened their eyes and they looked, and there they were, inside Samaria.

21 When the king of Israel saw them, he asked Elisha, “Shall I kill them, my father?(L) Shall I kill them?”

22 “Do not kill them,” he answered. “Would you kill those you have captured(M) with your own sword or bow? Set food and water before them so that they may eat and drink and then go back to their master.” 23 So he prepared a great feast for them, and after they had finished eating and drinking, he sent them away, and they returned to their master. So the bands(N) from Aram stopped raiding Israel’s territory.

Famine in Besieged Samaria

24 Some time later, Ben-Hadad(O) king of Aram mobilized his entire army and marched up and laid siege(P) to Samaria. 25 There was a great famine(Q) in the city; the siege lasted so long that a donkey’s head sold for eighty shekels[a] of silver, and a quarter of a cab[b] of seed pods[c](R) for five shekels.[d]

26 As the king of Israel was passing by on the wall, a woman cried to him, “Help me, my lord the king!”

27 The king replied, “If the Lord does not help you, where can I get help for you? From the threshing floor? From the winepress?” 28 Then he asked her, “What’s the matter?”

She answered, “This woman said to me, ‘Give up your son so we may eat him today, and tomorrow we’ll eat my son.’ 29 So we cooked my son and ate(S) him. The next day I said to her, ‘Give up your son so we may eat him,’ but she had hidden him.”

30 When the king heard the woman’s words, he tore(T) his robes. As he went along the wall, the people looked, and they saw that, under his robes, he had sackcloth(U) on his body. 31 He said, “May God deal with me, be it ever so severely, if the head of Elisha son of Shaphat remains on his shoulders today!”

32 Now Elisha was sitting in his house, and the elders(V) were sitting with him. The king sent a messenger ahead, but before he arrived, Elisha said to the elders, “Don’t you see how this murderer(W) is sending someone to cut off my head?(X) Look, when the messenger comes, shut the door and hold it shut against him. Is not the sound of his master’s footsteps behind him?” 33 While he was still talking to them, the messenger came down to him.

The king said, “This disaster is from the Lord. Why should I wait(Y) for the Lord any longer?”

7 Elisha replied, “Hear the word of the Lord. This is what the Lord says: About this time tomorrow, a seah[e] of the finest flour will sell for a shekel[f] and two seahs[g] of barley for a shekel(Z) at the gate of Samaria.”

2 The officer on whose arm the king was leaning(AA) said to the man of God, “Look, even if the Lord should open the floodgates(AB) of the heavens, could this happen?”

“You will see it with your own eyes,” answered Elisha, “but you will not eat(AC) any of it!”

The Siege Lifted

3 Now there were four men with leprosy[h](AD) at the entrance of the city gate. They said to each other, “Why stay here until we die? 4 If we say, ‘We’ll go into the city’—the famine is there, and we will die. And if we stay here, we will die. So let’s go over to the camp of the Arameans and surrender. If they spare us, we live; if they kill us, then we die.”

5 At dusk they got up and went to the camp of the Arameans. When they reached the edge of the camp, no one was there, 6 for the Lord had caused the Arameans to hear the sound(AE) of chariots and horses and a great army, so that they said to one another, “Look, the king of Israel has hired(AF) the Hittite(AG) and Egyptian kings to attack us!” 7 So they got up and fled(AH) in the dusk and abandoned their tents and their horses and donkeys. They left the camp as it was and ran for their lives.

8 The men who had leprosy(AI) reached the edge of the camp, entered one of the tents and ate and drank. Then they took silver, gold and clothes, and went off and hid them. They returned and entered another tent and took some things from it and hid them also.

9 Then they said to each other, “What we’re doing is not right. This is a day of good news and we are keeping it to ourselves. If we wait until daylight, punishment will overtake us. Let’s go at once and report this to the royal palace.”

10 So they went and called out to the city gatekeepers and told them, “We went into the Aramean camp and no one was there—not a sound of anyone—only tethered horses and donkeys, and the tents left just as they were.” 11 The gatekeepers shouted the news, and it was reported within the palace.

12 The king got up in the night and said to his officers, “I will tell you what the Arameans have done to us. They know we are starving; so they have left the camp to hide(AJ) in the countryside, thinking, ‘They will surely come out, and then we will take them alive and get into the city.’”

13 One of his officers answered, “Have some men take five of the horses that are left in the city. Their plight will be like that of all the Israelites left here—yes, they will only be like all these Israelites who are doomed. So let us send them to find out what happened.”

14 So they selected two chariots with their horses, and the king sent them after the Aramean army. He commanded the drivers, “Go and find out what has happened.” 15 They followed them as far as the Jordan, and they found the whole road strewn with the clothing and equipment the Arameans had thrown away in their headlong flight.(AK) So the messengers returned and reported to the king. 16 Then the people went out and plundered(AL) the camp of the Arameans. So a seah of the finest flour sold for a shekel, and two seahs of barley sold for a shekel,(AM) as the Lord had said.

17 Now the king had put the officer on whose arm he leaned in charge of the gate, and the people trampled him in the gateway, and he died,(AN) just as the man of God had foretold when the king came down to his house. 18 It happened as the man of God had said to the king: “About this time tomorrow, a seah of the finest flour will sell for a shekel and two seahs of barley for a shekel at the gate of Samaria.”

19 The officer had said to the man of God, “Look, even if the Lord should open the floodgates(AO) of the heavens, could this happen?” The man of God had replied, “You will see it with your own eyes, but you will not eat any of it!” 20 And that is exactly what happened to him, for the people trampled him in the gateway, and he died.

Acts 15:36-16:15

Disagreement Between Paul and Barnabas

36 Some time later Paul said to Barnabas, “Let us go back and visit the believers in all the towns(A) where we preached the word of the Lord(B) and see how they are doing.” 37 Barnabas wanted to take John, also called Mark,(C) with them, 38 but Paul did not think it wise to take him, because he had deserted them(D) in Pamphylia and had not continued with them in the work. 39 They had such a sharp disagreement that they parted company. Barnabas took Mark and sailed for Cyprus, 40 but Paul chose Silas(E) and left, commended by the believers to the grace of the Lord.(F) 41 He went through Syria(G) and Cilicia,(H) strengthening the churches.(I)

Timothy Joins Paul and Silas

16 Paul came to Derbe and then to Lystra,(J) where a disciple named Timothy(K) lived, whose mother was Jewish and a believer(L) but whose father was a Greek. 2 The believers(M) at Lystra and Iconium(N) spoke well of him. 3 Paul wanted to take him along on the journey, so he circumcised him because of the Jews who lived in that area, for they all knew that his father was a Greek.(O) 4 As they traveled from town to town, they delivered the decisions reached by the apostles and elders(P) in Jerusalem(Q) for the people to obey.(R) 5 So the churches were strengthened(S) in the faith and grew daily in numbers.(T)

Paul’s Vision of the Man of Macedonia

6 Paul and his companions traveled throughout the region of Phrygia(U) and Galatia,(V) having been kept by the Holy Spirit from preaching the word in the province of Asia.(W) 7 When they came to the border of Mysia, they tried to enter Bithynia, but the Spirit of Jesus(X) would not allow them to. 8 So they passed by Mysia and went down to Troas.(Y) 9 During the night Paul had a vision(Z) of a man of Macedonia(AA) standing and begging him, “Come over to Macedonia and help us.” 10 After Paul had seen the vision, we(AB) got ready at once to leave for Macedonia, concluding that God had called us to preach the gospel(AC) to them.

Lydia’s Conversion in Philippi

11 From Troas(AD) we put out to sea and sailed straight for Samothrace, and the next day we went on to Neapolis. 12 From there we traveled to Philippi,(AE) a Roman colony and the leading city of that district[a] of Macedonia.(AF) And we stayed there several days.

13 On the Sabbath(AG) we went outside the city gate to the river, where we expected to find a place of prayer. We sat down and began to speak to the women who had gathered there. 14 One of those listening was a woman from the city of Thyatira(AH) named Lydia, a dealer in purple cloth. She was a worshiper of God. The Lord opened her heart(AI) to respond to Paul’s message. 15 When she and the members of her household(AJ) were baptized,(AK) she invited us to her home. “If you consider me a believer in the Lord,” she said, “come and stay at my house.” And she persuaded us.

2 Kings 4:18-5:27, Acts 15:1-35, Psalms 141:1-10, Proverbs 17:23

Today is the 23rd day of June welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I am Brian it is great to be here with you today as we gather around the Global Campfire and move forward together on our adventure through the Scriptures this year. And the trail leads us back out into second Kings where we are getting kinda moved in and getting to know the lay of the land and getting to know the prophet, Elisha. And we kinda left the story in the middle yesterday. A woman and her husband had built Elisha a room on the top of their house. He had begun to stay there. He wanted to do something nice for her. In the end he told her about this time next year you will have a son and she did and that’s where we pick up the story. So, today second Kings chapter 4 verse 18 through 5 verse 27.

Commentary:

Okay. So, in the book of Acts today we have this retelling of what is known as the Jerusalem Council and in an understated way the Bible tells us something that happened that so monumentally shifted things. And we talked about this just a few days ago when we were with Peter up on top of the roof and the sheets coming down with the unclean animals and him going to Caesarea to minister to Cornelius who was a Roman centurion, a Gentile, and yet the Holy Spirit fell upon his household, and they were saved. Well…Paul and Barnabas are off on a missionary journey throughout the Roman empire, and they are indeed going to the Jewish community in whatever city they go to but so often they’re pushed out by the Jewish community, but the Gentiles are listening, and the Lord is doing a mighty work among Jew and Gentile alike even though they are facing an incredible amount of opposition. So, Hebrew people, Jewish people who were religiously devout, fully committed to the Mosaic law, fully committed to obeying God’s through the law, they never really had the concept that accepting Jesus was some kind of new religion of some sort. It was a Jewish thing. Jesus was the Hebrew Messiah. Things indeed were being fulfilled but for the Jewish people. And the whole thing was in a Jewish context. And, so, it’s not unfair to see how they would assume that. So, even Pharisees, even religious scholars were believing in Jesus, but again they never thought it was outside of a Jewish context. And, so, some believers went to some of the other churches and among the Gentiles and preached that the Gentiles…and I’m quoting from the book of Acts, “the Gentiles must be circumcised and required to keep the law of Moses.” They said, “unless you are circumcised according to the custom taught by Moses, you cannot be saved.” Well, that’s going to be a problem for Gentile people who don’t understand why circumcision would have anything to do with anything. Like you would need to be in a Hebrew context to understand the meaning of circumcision and the covenant that it represents. So, this causes confusion, confusion among the Gentile believers who are like, “are we doing this right? Is this the way to go? Like what are we supposed to do here?” This causes Paul and Barnabas to go to Jerusalem where the Jerusalem Council occurred. And people argued at this Council as told in the book of Acts on both sides. So, on the one side you have Hebrew believers in Jesus who believe Jesus was fully in a Jewish context and was for the Jewish people and what His work did was for the Jewish people. And, so, if you wanted to be in with Jesus you needed to kinda convert to Judaism and begin to obey the Mosaic law, the law of God and then honor Jesus and worship Him as the Jewish Messiah, the anointed One, of God, whereas people like Peter and Paul and Barnabas had already seen what God was choosing to do. They had been out in ministry among Gentile people and were watching God make the decision. Like if the Lord sends his Holy Spirit upon people well then God’s making that decision. And that was the argument in favor of the Gentiles. And, so, ultimately a decision was made that, no Gentiles don’t need to convert to Judaism and begin to try to bear the burden of the Mosaic law when even Jewish people have never been able to bear that burden. They shouldn’t be burdened in other words. Gentile people shouldn’t be burdened with things that they don’t even know what they are. Like they have never ever, ever had that contextualized. They’ve been Pagans worshiping many false gods and now they want to come to the one true God. And, so, they don’t need, you know, a mile long list of rules and regulations that they gotta even understand what the context is before they can begin to serve God. And, so, they wrote a letter and sent it back. And that is beautiful and that indeed affirms all are welcome. Like all of us who are Gentile are welcome into the family of God. But that’s not the end of the story and we’ll see it crop up throughout the letters of Paul, especially. Because even though a determination or a decision was made at the Council not everyone was on board with that decision. That has been true throughout all of church history. There are many church councils that we can look at and there were a lot of debate and a lot of people branded as heretics after the fact when they wouldn’t get on board with what everyone had decided. And, so, not everyone was on board with the Jerusalem Council. This is profoundly monumental though in the life of the church, not only because of…because of its inclusiveness, inviting everyone in the world to come to Jesus, but because of the social repercussions. Up until this time Jewish people were considered strange, but a people who were practicing a very ancient religion and were supposed to separate themselves. And, so, they’re in the Roman Empire and they are allowed to worship only their God. Like they have a little bit of, essentially, religious exemption because in the Roman Empire this is a polytheistic culture. They worship many many gods and it’s wide open. In the Roman Empire you can worship any god that you want to worship but there are also the gods of the Empire and those gods everybody has to worship. You can worship any other gods that you want to in addition, but you have to give your loyalty to the gods of the Empire, the gods who made Rome great. Obviously, that will not work for a Hebrew person, and they were given an exemption. They did not have to do that. They didn’t have to go sacrifice to the gods of the Empire etc. etc. etc. but everybody else did. What we see happening at the Jerusalem Council is a distinction is being made. People aren’t going to welcome Gentile’s wholesale into the Jewish community. And, so, a line gets drawn and people who are following Jesus then began to be separated from Orthodox practicing Jews because these Christians, Jewish or Gentile, they are allowing Gentiles, they are allowing something that’s not allowed. And, so, it could be argued that they’re not really practicing Judaism anymore. And that’s what happens. They get shoved into the margins where they don’t have any place of refuge. And as Christians resist they get marginalized themselves until they are…well…for a period of time really considered the problem and tremendous persecution breaks out. So, understanding that what we read today really really affected the world going forward is important for us to sort of understand the lay of the land or the context, how this all happened and how it is that the faith was passed down through all of the generations until we had the opportunity to believe as well and participate in the family of God. And, so, let’s remember this because it’s really important to our history.

Prayer:

Father, we love You. We love Your word. We thank You for Your word. We thank You for Your kindness in our lives to allow us to have it and that we can pour over it and look into the stories and see how things moved out from Jerusalem and how they ended up in our time and in our hearts. And Father, we see that the early church has to grapple with things that they don’t understand and deal with problems that look pretty complicated, and we thank You for Your guidance certainly in that time, by the power of Your Holy Spirit but we also face things are pretty complicated in our own lives and we need that same power. We need Your Holy Spirit to lead us into all truth. And, so, that is what we pray for once again. Come Holy Spirit in the name of Jesus we ask. Amen.

Our Daily Audio Bible family holiday is coming up on the seventh day of July, also known as the Daily Audio Bible long walk, an opportunity for us to carve out a little bit of time, to set aside a single day out of the year to recognize that we’re in the middle of the year and regrouping is often a good thing and reflection is a good thing. So, we take that day and go out into nature, into beauty, maybe a lake that’s nearby, maybe a park that’s down the street, maybe a national Park that’s hours away, maybe somewhere that no one else would find beautiful but it’s very very meaningful to you, we go there, and we take a long walk with God. Like, time stands still. No hurry. No rush. An opportunity to say everything that’s in our hearts that we been meaning to find time to say having a conversation with God, with no alarm to tell us our time is up with God. It’s an opportunity to go for that long, long walk like you would when you fell in love and realize how beautiful the world is that God has made and how He is loving us and restoring us through beauty and how interesting it is to see how much life is all around us all happening all around us and we’re so rarely paying attention. And regrouping and paying attention to what the second half of the year is going to look like. It’s been a remarkable thing to do as a community all over the world all of these years and it’s something that I look forward to personally every year. Like to know that there’s a day that is set aside for exactly this. And obviously if we’re going for a long walk in nature somewhere beautiful by ourselves spending the day with God it’s like a solitary thing to do, but it’s also a beautiful community experience here, which makes it the Daily Audio Bible holiday for us because even though we are where we are, there are thousands of brothers and sisters all over the world that are doing the same thing where they are. And, so, we put a post on our Facebook page for the Daily Audio Bible for the long walk and just invite you. Like, when you go you’re probably gonna have your phone with you, you’re probably not gonna go without your phone. The trick is to not be on your phone all day in this time that you’ve set aside to go for a long walk with God, but you probably want to take a picture. You might want to shoot a video. You might want something to remember the day that you spent on a long walk with God. And just choose a picture that you took or choose a video or whatever and post that to the Daily Audio Bible Facebook page in the long walk post and all of the sudden we get to do it all over again. Like we get to kinda scroll through and see the amazing beauty of the earth all over the world all on the same day. And it’s so fun. I love it. I love it so very very much. Looking forward to that coming up on the seventh day of July. So, that’s two weeks from today. So, make plans for that. I’m very much looking forward to enjoying it together as a community for another year.

The Daily Audio Bible Reading for Thursday June 23, 2022 (NIV)

2 Kings 4:18-5:27

18 The child grew, and one day he went out to his father, who was with the reapers.(A) 19 He said to his father, “My head! My head!”

His father told a servant, “Carry him to his mother.” 20 After the servant had lifted him up and carried him to his mother, the boy sat on her lap until noon, and then he died. 21 She went up and laid him on the bed(B) of the man of God, then shut the door and went out.

22 She called her husband and said, “Please send me one of the servants and a donkey so I can go to the man of God quickly and return.”

23 “Why go to him today?” he asked. “It’s not the New Moon(C) or the Sabbath.”

“That’s all right,” she said.

24 She saddled the donkey and said to her servant, “Lead on; don’t slow down for me unless I tell you.” 25 So she set out and came to the man of God at Mount Carmel.(D)

When he saw her in the distance, the man of God said to his servant Gehazi, “Look! There’s the Shunammite! 26 Run to meet her and ask her, ‘Are you all right? Is your husband all right? Is your child all right?’”

“Everything is all right,” she said.

27 When she reached the man of God at the mountain, she took hold of his feet. Gehazi came over to push her away, but the man of God said, “Leave her alone! She is in bitter distress,(E) but the Lord has hidden it from me and has not told me why.”

28 “Did I ask you for a son, my lord?” she said. “Didn’t I tell you, ‘Don’t raise my hopes’?”

29 Elisha said to Gehazi, “Tuck your cloak into your belt,(F) take my staff(G) in your hand and run. Don’t greet anyone you meet, and if anyone greets you, do not answer. Lay my staff on the boy’s face.”

30 But the child’s mother said, “As surely as the Lord lives and as you live, I will not leave you.” So he got up and followed her.

31 Gehazi went on ahead and laid the staff on the boy’s face, but there was no sound or response. So Gehazi went back to meet Elisha and told him, “The boy has not awakened.”

32 When Elisha reached the house, there was the boy lying dead on his couch.(H) 33 He went in, shut the door on the two of them and prayed(I) to the Lord. 34 Then he got on the bed and lay on the boy, mouth to mouth, eyes to eyes, hands to hands. As he stretched(J) himself out on him, the boy’s body grew warm. 35 Elisha turned away and walked back and forth in the room and then got on the bed and stretched out on him once more. The boy sneezed seven times(K) and opened his eyes.(L)

36 Elisha summoned Gehazi and said, “Call the Shunammite.” And he did. When she came, he said, “Take your son.”(M) 37 She came in, fell at his feet and bowed to the ground. Then she took her son and went out.

Death in the Pot

38 Elisha returned to Gilgal(N) and there was a famine(O) in that region. While the company of the prophets was meeting with him, he said to his servant, “Put on the large pot and cook some stew for these prophets.”

39 One of them went out into the fields to gather herbs and found a wild vine and picked as many of its gourds as his garment could hold. When he returned, he cut them up into the pot of stew, though no one knew what they were. 40 The stew was poured out for the men, but as they began to eat it, they cried out, “Man of God, there is death in the pot!” And they could not eat it.

41 Elisha said, “Get some flour.” He put it into the pot and said, “Serve it to the people to eat.” And there was nothing harmful in the pot.(P)

Feeding of a Hundred

42 A man came from Baal Shalishah,(Q) bringing the man of God twenty loaves(R) of barley bread(S) baked from the first ripe grain, along with some heads of new grain. “Give it to the people to eat,” Elisha said.

43 “How can I set this before a hundred men?” his servant asked.

But Elisha answered, “Give it to the people to eat.(T) For this is what the Lord says: ‘They will eat and have some left over.(U)’” 44 Then he set it before them, and they ate and had some left over, according to the word of the Lord.

Naaman Healed of Leprosy

5 Now Naaman was commander of the army of the king of Aram.(V) He was a great man in the sight of his master and highly regarded, because through him the Lord had given victory to Aram. He was a valiant soldier, but he had leprosy.[a](W)

2 Now bands of raiders(X) from Aram had gone out and had taken captive a young girl from Israel, and she served Naaman’s wife. 3 She said to her mistress, “If only my master would see the prophet(Y) who is in Samaria! He would cure him of his leprosy.”

4 Naaman went to his master and told him what the girl from Israel had said. 5 “By all means, go,” the king of Aram replied. “I will send a letter to the king of Israel.” So Naaman left, taking with him ten talents[b] of silver, six thousand shekels[c] of gold and ten sets of clothing.(Z) 6 The letter that he took to the king of Israel read: “With this letter I am sending my servant Naaman to you so that you may cure him of his leprosy.”

7 As soon as the king of Israel read the letter,(AA) he tore his robes and said, “Am I God?(AB) Can I kill and bring back to life?(AC) Why does this fellow send someone to me to be cured of his leprosy? See how he is trying to pick a quarrel(AD) with me!”

8 When Elisha the man of God heard that the king of Israel had torn his robes, he sent him this message: “Why have you torn your robes? Have the man come to me and he will know that there is a prophet(AE) in Israel.” 9 So Naaman went with his horses and chariots and stopped at the door of Elisha’s house. 10 Elisha sent a messenger to say to him, “Go, wash(AF) yourself seven times(AG) in the Jordan, and your flesh will be restored and you will be cleansed.”

11 But Naaman went away angry and said, “I thought that he would surely come out to me and stand and call on the name of the Lord his God, wave his hand(AH) over the spot and cure me of my leprosy. 12 Are not Abana and Pharpar, the rivers of Damascus, better than all the waters(AI) of Israel? Couldn’t I wash in them and be cleansed?” So he turned and went off in a rage.(AJ)

13 Naaman’s servants went to him and said, “My father,(AK) if the prophet had told you to do some great thing, would you not have done it? How much more, then, when he tells you, ‘Wash and be cleansed’!” 14 So he went down and dipped himself in the Jordan seven times,(AL) as the man of God had told him, and his flesh was restored(AM) and became clean like that of a young boy.(AN)

15 Then Naaman and all his attendants went back to the man of God(AO). He stood before him and said, “Now I know(AP) that there is no God in all the world except in Israel. So please accept a gift(AQ) from your servant.”

16 The prophet answered, “As surely as the Lord lives, whom I serve, I will not accept a thing.” And even though Naaman urged him, he refused.(AR)

17 “If you will not,” said Naaman, “please let me, your servant, be given as much earth(AS) as a pair of mules can carry, for your servant will never again make burnt offerings and sacrifices to any other god but the Lord. 18 But may the Lord forgive your servant for this one thing: When my master enters the temple of Rimmon to bow down and he is leaning(AT) on my arm and I have to bow there also—when I bow down in the temple of Rimmon, may the Lord forgive your servant for this.”

19 “Go in peace,”(AU) Elisha said.

After Naaman had traveled some distance, 20 Gehazi, the servant of Elisha the man of God, said to himself, “My master was too easy on Naaman, this Aramean, by not accepting from him what he brought. As surely as the Lord(AV) lives, I will run after him and get something from him.”

21 So Gehazi hurried after Naaman. When Naaman saw him running toward him, he got down from the chariot to meet him. “Is everything all right?” he asked.

22 “Everything is all right,” Gehazi answered. “My master sent me to say, ‘Two young men from the company of the prophets have just come to me from the hill country of Ephraim. Please give them a talent[d] of silver and two sets of clothing.’”(AW)

23 “By all means, take two talents,” said Naaman. He urged Gehazi to accept them, and then tied up the two talents of silver in two bags, with two sets of clothing. He gave them to two of his servants, and they carried them ahead of Gehazi. 24 When Gehazi came to the hill, he took the things from the servants and put them away in the house. He sent the men away and they left.

25 When he went in and stood before his master, Elisha asked him, “Where have you been, Gehazi?”

“Your servant didn’t go anywhere,” Gehazi answered.

26 But Elisha said to him, “Was not my spirit with you when the man got down from his chariot to meet you? Is this the time(AX) to take money or to accept clothes—or olive groves and vineyards, or flocks and herds, or male and female slaves?(AY) 27 Naaman’s leprosy(AZ) will cling to you and to your descendants forever.” Then Gehazi(BA) went from Elisha’s presence and his skin was leprous—it had become as white as snow.(BB)

Acts 15:1-35

The Council at Jerusalem

15 Certain people(A) came down from Judea to Antioch and were teaching the believers:(B) “Unless you are circumcised,(C) according to the custom taught by Moses,(D) you cannot be saved.” 2 This brought Paul and Barnabas into sharp dispute and debate with them. So Paul and Barnabas were appointed, along with some other believers, to go up to Jerusalem(E) to see the apostles and elders(F) about this question. 3 The church sent them on their way, and as they traveled through Phoenicia(G) and Samaria, they told how the Gentiles had been converted.(H) This news made all the believers very glad. 4 When they came to Jerusalem, they were welcomed by the church and the apostles and elders, to whom they reported everything God had done through them.(I)

5 Then some of the believers who belonged to the party(J) of the Pharisees(K) stood up and said, “The Gentiles must be circumcised and required to keep the law of Moses.”(L)

6 The apostles and elders met to consider this question. 7 After much discussion, Peter got up and addressed them: “Brothers, you know that some time ago God made a choice among you that the Gentiles might hear from my lips the message of the gospel and believe.(M) 8 God, who knows the heart,(N) showed that he accepted them by giving the Holy Spirit to them,(O) just as he did to us. 9 He did not discriminate between us and them,(P) for he purified their hearts by faith.(Q) 10 Now then, why do you try to test God(R) by putting on the necks of Gentiles a yoke(S) that neither we nor our ancestors have been able to bear? 11 No! We believe it is through the grace(T) of our Lord Jesus that we are saved, just as they are.”

12 The whole assembly became silent as they listened to Barnabas and Paul telling about the signs and wonders(U) God had done among the Gentiles through them.(V) 13 When they finished, James(W) spoke up. “Brothers,” he said, “listen to me. 14 Simon[a] has described to us how God first intervened to choose a people for his name from the Gentiles.(X) 15 The words of the prophets are in agreement with this, as it is written:

16 “‘After this I will return
and rebuild David’s fallen tent.
Its ruins I will rebuild,
and I will restore it,
17 that the rest of mankind may seek the Lord,
even all the Gentiles who bear my name,
says the Lord, who does these things’[b](Y)—
18 things known from long ago.[c](Z)

19 “It is my judgment, therefore, that we should not make it difficult for the Gentiles who are turning to God. 20 Instead we should write to them, telling them to abstain from food polluted by idols,(AA) from sexual immorality,(AB) from the meat of strangled animals and from blood.(AC) 21 For the law of Moses has been preached in every city from the earliest times and is read in the synagogues on every Sabbath.”(AD)

The Council’s Letter to Gentile Believers

22 Then the apostles and elders,(AE) with the whole church, decided to choose some of their own men and send them to Antioch(AF) with Paul and Barnabas. They chose Judas (called Barsabbas) and Silas,(AG) men who were leaders among the believers. 23 With them they sent the following letter:

The apostles and elders, your brothers,

To the Gentile believers in Antioch,(AH) Syria(AI) and Cilicia:(AJ)

Greetings.(AK)

24 We have heard that some went out from us without our authorization and disturbed you, troubling your minds by what they said.(AL) 25 So we all agreed to choose some men and send them to you with our dear friends Barnabas and Paul— 26 men who have risked their lives(AM) for the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. 27 Therefore we are sending Judas and Silas(AN) to confirm by word of mouth what we are writing. 28 It seemed good to the Holy Spirit(AO) and to us not to burden you with anything beyond the following requirements: 29 You are to abstain from food sacrificed to idols, from blood, from the meat of strangled animals and from sexual immorality.(AP) You will do well to avoid these things.

Farewell.

30 So the men were sent off and went down to Antioch, where they gathered the church together and delivered the letter. 31 The people read it and were glad for its encouraging message. 32 Judas and Silas,(AQ) who themselves were prophets,(AR) said much to encourage and strengthen the believers. 33 After spending some time there, they were sent off by the believers with the blessing of peace(AS) to return to those who had sent them. [34] [d] 35 But Paul and Barnabas remained in Antioch, where they and many others taught and preached(AT) the word of the Lord.(AU)

Psalm 141

A psalm of David.

1 I call to you, Lord, come quickly(A) to me;
hear me(B) when I call to you.
2 May my prayer be set before you like incense;(C)
may the lifting up of my hands(D) be like the evening sacrifice.(E)

3 Set a guard over my mouth,(F) Lord;
keep watch over the door of my lips.(G)
4 Do not let my heart(H) be drawn to what is evil
so that I take part in wicked deeds(I)
along with those who are evildoers;
do not let me eat their delicacies.(J)

5 Let a righteous man strike me—that is a kindness;
let him rebuke me(K)—that is oil on my head.(L)
My head will not refuse it,
for my prayer will still be against the deeds of evildoers.

6 Their rulers will be thrown down from the cliffs,(M)
and the wicked will learn that my words were well spoken.
7 They will say, “As one plows(N) and breaks up the earth,(O)
so our bones have been scattered at the mouth(P) of the grave.”

8 But my eyes are fixed(Q) on you, Sovereign Lord;
in you I take refuge(R)—do not give me over to death.
9 Keep me safe(S) from the traps set by evildoers,(T)
from the snares(U) they have laid for me.
10 Let the wicked fall(V) into their own nets,
while I pass by in safety.(W)
