The Daily Audio Bible Reading for Tuesday December 8, 2020 (NIV)

Hosea 10-14

10 (A)Israel is a luxuriant vine
that yields its fruit.
The more his fruit increased,
(B)the more altars he built;
as his country improved,
he improved his pillars.
Their heart is false;
now they must bear their guilt.
The Lord[a] will break down their altars
and destroy their pillars.

For now they will say:
(C)“We have no king,
for we do not fear the Lord;
and a king—what could he do for us?”
They utter (D)mere words;
with empty[b] oaths they make covenants;
so (E)judgment springs up like poisonous weeds
(F)in the furrows of the field.
The inhabitants of Samaria tremble
for (G)the calf[c] of (H)Beth-aven.
Its people mourn for it, and so do its idolatrous priests—
those who rejoiced over it and (I)over its glory—
for it has departed[d] from them.
(J)The thing itself shall be carried to Assyria
as tribute to (K)the great king.[e]
Ephraim shall be put to shame,
and Israel shall be ashamed (L)of his idol.[f]

(M)Samaria's king shall perish
like a twig on the face of the waters.
The high places of (N)Aven, (O)the sin of Israel,
shall be destroyed.
(P)Thorn and thistle shall grow up
on their altars,
and (Q)they shall say to the mountains, “Cover us,”
and to the hills, “Fall on us.”

From (R)the days of Gibeah, you have sinned, O Israel;
there they have continued.
Shall not the war against the unjust[g] overtake them in Gibeah?
10 (S)When I please, (T)I will discipline them,
and nations shall be gathered against them
when they are bound up for (U)their double iniquity.

11 Ephraim was a trained calf
that (V)loved to thresh,
and I spared her fair neck;
but I will put (W)Ephraim to the yoke;
(X)Judah must plow;
Jacob must harrow for himself.
12 (Y)Sow for yourselves righteousness;
reap steadfast love;
(Z)break up your fallow ground,
for it is the time to seek the Lord,
that he may come and (AA)rain righteousness upon you.

13 (AB)You have plowed iniquity;
you have reaped injustice;
you have eaten the fruit of lies.
Because you have trusted in your own way
and in the multitude of your warriors,
14 therefore (AC)the tumult of war shall arise among your people,
and all your fortresses shall be destroyed,
as (AD)Shalman destroyed Beth-arbel on the day of battle;
(AE)mothers were dashed in pieces with their children.
15 Thus it shall be done to you, O (AF)Bethel,
because of your great evil.
At dawn (AG)the king of Israel
shall be utterly cut off.

The Lord's Love for Israel

11 (AH)When Israel was a child, (AI)I loved him,
and out of Egypt I (AJ)called (AK)my son.
(AL)The more they were called,
the more they went away;
(AM)they kept sacrificing to the Baals
and burning offerings to idols.

Yet it was (AN)I who taught Ephraim to walk;
I took them up by their arms,
but they did not know that (AO)I healed them.
(AP)I led them with cords of kindness,[h]
with the bands of love,
and (AQ)I became to them as one who eases the yoke on their jaws,
and (AR)I bent down to them and fed them.

(AS)They shall not[i] return to the land of Egypt,
but (AT)Assyria shall be their king,
(AU)because (AV)they have refused to return to me.
(AW)The sword shall rage against their cities,
consume the bars of their gates,
and devour them (AX)because of their own counsels.
My people are bent (AY)on turning away from me,
and though (AZ)they call out to the Most High,
he shall not raise them up at all.

How can I give you up, O Ephraim?
How can I hand you over, O Israel?
(BA)How can I make you (BB)like Admah?
How can I treat you (BC)like Zeboiim?
(BD)My heart recoils within me;
my compassion grows warm and tender.
I will not execute my burning anger;
I will not again destroy Ephraim;
(BE)for I am God and not a man,
(BF)the Holy One in your midst,
and I will not come in wrath.[j]

10 (BG)They shall go after the Lord;
(BH)he will roar like a lion;
when he roars,
his children shall come trembling (BI)from the west;
11 they shall come trembling like birds (BJ)from Egypt,
and (BK)like doves (BL)from the land of Assyria,
and I will return them to their homes, declares the Lord.
12 [k] Ephraim (BM)has surrounded me with lies,
and the house of Israel with deceit,
but Judah still walks with God
and is faithful to the Holy One.
12 Ephraim feeds on the wind
and pursues (BN)the east wind all day long;
they multiply (BO)falsehood and violence;
(BP)they make a covenant with Assyria,
and (BQ)oil is carried to Egypt.

The Lord's Indictment of Israel and Judah

(BR)The Lord has an indictment against Judah
and will punish Jacob according to his ways;
he will repay him according to his deeds.
(BS)In the womb he took his brother by the heel,
and in his manhood he strove with God.
He strove with the angel and prevailed;
he wept and sought his favor.
(BT)He met God[l] at Bethel,
and there God spoke with us—
the Lord, the God of hosts,
(BU)the Lord is his memorial name:
“So you, (BV)by the help of your God, return,
(BW)hold fast to love and justice,
and wait continually for your God.”

A merchant, in whose hands are (BX)false balances,
he loves (BY)to oppress.
Ephraim has said, “Ah, but (BZ)I am rich;
I have found wealth for myself;
in all my labors (CA)they cannot find in me iniquity or sin.”
(CB)I am the Lord your God
from the land of Egypt;
I will again make you (CC)dwell in tents,
as in the days of the appointed feast.

10 (CD)I spoke to the prophets;
it was I who multiplied (CE)visions,
and through the prophets gave parables.
11 (CF)If there is iniquity in Gilead,
they shall surely come to nothing:
(CG)in Gilgal they sacrifice bulls;
(CH)their altars also are like stone heaps
(CI)on the furrows of the field.
12 (CJ)Jacob fled to the land of Aram;
there Israel (CK)served for a wife,
and for a wife he guarded sheep.
13 By (CL)a prophet (CM)the Lord brought Israel up from Egypt,
and by a prophet he was guarded.
14 (CN)Ephraim has given bitter provocation;
so his Lord (CO)will leave his bloodguilt on him
(CP)and will repay him for his disgraceful deeds.

The Lord's Relentless Judgment on Israel

13 When Ephraim spoke, there was trembling;
(CQ)he was exalted in Israel,
but he incurred guilt (CR)through Baal and died.
And now they sin more and more,
and (CS)make for themselves metal images,
idols skillfully made of their silver,
(CT)all of them the work of craftsmen.
It is said of them,
“Those who offer human sacrifice (CU)kiss calves!”
Therefore they shall be (CV)like the morning mist
or (CW)like the dew that goes early away,
(CX)like the chaff that swirls from the threshing floor
or (CY)like smoke from a window.

But (CZ)I am the Lord your God
from the land of Egypt;
(DA)you know no God but me,
and (DB)besides me there is no savior.
(DC)It was I who knew you in the wilderness,
in the land of drought;
(DD)but when they had grazed,[m] they became full,
(DE)they were filled, and their heart was lifted up;
(DF)therefore they forgot me.
So (DG)I am to them like a lion;
(DH)like a leopard I will lurk beside the way.
I will fall upon them (DI)like a bear robbed of her cubs;
I will tear open their breast,
and there I will devour them like a lion,
(DJ)as a wild beast would rip them open.

He destroys[n] you, O Israel,
for you are against me, against (DK)your helper.
10 (DL)Where now is your king, to save you in all your cities?
Where are all your rulers—
those of whom (DM)you said,
“Give me a king and princes”?
11 (DN)I gave you a king in my anger,
and (DO)I took him away in my wrath.

12 The iniquity of Ephraim is (DP)bound up;
his sin is (DQ)kept in store.
13 (DR)The pangs of childbirth come for him,
but he is an unwise son,
for at the right time he does not present himself
(DS)at the opening of the womb.

14 (DT)I shall ransom them from the power of Sheol;
(DU)I shall redeem them from Death.[o]
(DV)O (DW)Death, where are your plagues?
(DX)O (DY)Sheol, where is your sting?
(DZ)Compassion is hidden from my eyes.

15 Though (EA)he may flourish among his brothers,
(EB)the east wind, the wind of the Lord, shall come,
rising from the wilderness,
(EC)and his fountain shall dry up;
his spring shall be parched;
it shall strip (ED)his treasury
of every precious thing.
16 [p] Samaria (EE)shall bear her guilt,
because (EF)she has rebelled against her God;
they shall fall by the sword;
(EG)their little ones shall be dashed in pieces,
and their (EH)pregnant women ripped open.

A Plea to Return to the Lord

14 (EI)Return, O Israel, to the Lord your God,
for (EJ)you have stumbled because of your iniquity.
Take with you words
and return to the Lord;
say to him,
“Take away all iniquity;
accept (EK)what is good,
and we will pay with bulls
(EL)the vows[q] of our lips.
(EM)Assyria shall not save us;
(EN)we will not ride on horses;
and (EO)we will say no more, ‘Our God,’
to the work of our hands.
(EP)In you the orphan finds mercy.”

I (EQ)will heal their apostasy;
(ER)I will love them freely,
for my anger has turned from them.
(ES)I will be like the dew to Israel;
(ET)he shall blossom like the lily;
he shall take root like the trees (EU)of Lebanon;
his shoots shall spread out;
his beauty shall be (EV)like the olive,
and his fragrance like Lebanon.
They shall return and (EW)dwell beneath my[r] shadow;
they shall flourish like the grain;
they shall blossom like the vine;
their fame shall be like the wine of Lebanon.

O (EX)Ephraim, what have I to do with idols?
It is I who answer and look after you.[s]
I am like an evergreen cypress;
(EY)from me comes your fruit.

(EZ)Whoever is wise, let him understand these things;
whoever is discerning, let him know them;
for the ways of the Lord are right,
and (FA)the upright walk in them,
(FB)but transgressors stumble in them.

Beloved, although I was very eager to write to you about our (F)common salvation, I found it necessary to write appealing to you (G)to contend for the faith that was once for all delivered to the saints. For (H)certain people (I)have crept in unnoticed (J)who long ago were designated for this condemnation, ungodly people, who pervert (K)the grace of our God into sensuality and (L)deny our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ.

Now I want (M)to remind you, although you once fully knew it, that (N)Jesus, who saved[c] a people out of the land of Egypt, (O)afterward destroyed those who did not believe. And (P)the angels who did not stay within their own position of authority, but left their proper dwelling, he has kept in eternal chains under gloomy darkness until the judgment of the great day— just as (Q)Sodom and Gomorrah and (R)the surrounding cities, which likewise indulged in sexual immorality and (S)pursued unnatural desire,[d] serve as an example by undergoing a punishment of eternal fire.

Yet in like manner these people also, relying on their dreams, defile the flesh, reject authority, and (T)blaspheme the glorious ones. But when (U)the archangel (V)Michael, contending with the devil, was disputing (W)about the body of Moses, he did not presume to pronounce a blasphemous judgment, but said, (X)“The Lord rebuke you.” 10 (Y)But these people blaspheme all that they do not understand, and they are destroyed by all that they, like unreasoning animals, understand instinctively. 11 Woe to them! For they walked in (Z)the way of Cain and abandoned themselves for the sake of gain (AA)to Balaam's error and (AB)perished in Korah's rebellion. 12 These are hidden reefs[e] (AC)at your love feasts, as they feast with you without fear, (AD)shepherds feeding themselves; (AE)waterless clouds, (AF)swept along by winds; fruitless trees in late autumn, twice dead, (AG)uprooted; 13 (AH)wild waves of the sea, casting up the foam of (AI)their own shame; (AJ)wandering stars, (AK)for whom the gloom of utter darkness has been reserved forever.

14 It was also about these that Enoch, (AL)the seventh from Adam, prophesied, saying, (AM)“Behold, the Lord comes with ten thousands of his holy ones, 15 (AN)to execute judgment on all and to convict all the ungodly of all their deeds of ungodliness that they have (AO)committed in such an ungodly way, and of all (AP)the harsh things that ungodly sinners have spoken against him.” 16 These are grumblers, malcontents, (AQ)following their own sinful desires; (AR)they are loud-mouthed boasters, (AS)showing favoritism to gain advantage.

A Call to Persevere

17 But you must (AT)remember, beloved, the predictions of the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ. 18 They[f] said to you, (AU)“In the last time there will be scoffers, following their own ungodly passions.” 19 It is these who cause divisions, worldly people, (AV)devoid of the Spirit. 20 But you, beloved, (AW)building yourselves up in your most holy faith and (AX)praying in the Holy Spirit, 21 (AY)keep yourselves in the love of God, (AZ)waiting for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ that leads to eternal life. 22 And have mercy on those who doubt; 23 save others by (BA)snatching them out of (BB)the fire; to others show mercy (BC)with fear, hating even (BD)the garment[g] stained by the flesh.

Doxology

24 (BE)Now to him who is able (BF)to keep you from stumbling and (BG)to present you (BH)blameless before the presence of his glory with great joy, 25 to (BI)the only God, our Savior, through Jesus Christ our Lord, (BJ)be glory, majesty, dominion, and authority, before all time[h] and now and forever. Amen.

Psalm 127

Unless the Lord Builds the House

A Song of (A)Ascents. Of Solomon.

127 Unless the Lord builds the house,
those who build it labor in vain.
Unless the Lord (B)watches over the city,
the watchman stays awake in vain.
It is in vain that you rise up early
and go late to rest,
eating the bread of anxious (C)toil;
for he gives to his (D)beloved (E)sleep.

Behold, (F)children are a heritage from the Lord,
(G)the fruit of the womb a reward.
Like arrows in the hand of (H)a warrior
are the children[a] of one's youth.
Blessed is the man
who fills his quiver with them!
He shall not be put to shame
when he speaks with his enemies (I)in the gate.[b]

Proverbs 29:15-17

15 (A)The rod and reproof give wisdom,
but a child left to himself (B)brings shame to his mother.
16 When the wicked increase, transgression increases,
but (C)the righteous will look upon their downfall.
17 (D)Discipline your son, and he will give you rest;
he will give delight to your heart.

The Daily Audio Bible Reading for Tuesday December 8, 2020 (NIV)

Hosea 10-14

10 (A)Israel is a luxuriant vine
that yields its fruit.
The more his fruit increased,
(B)the more altars he built;
as his country improved,
he improved his pillars.
Their heart is false;
now they must bear their guilt.
The Lord[a] will break down their altars
and destroy their pillars.

For now they will say:
(C)“We have no king,
for we do not fear the Lord;
and a king—what could he do for us?”
They utter (D)mere words;
with empty[b] oaths they make covenants;
so (E)judgment springs up like poisonous weeds
(F)in the furrows of the field.
The inhabitants of Samaria tremble
for (G)the calf[c] of (H)Beth-aven.
Its people mourn for it, and so do its idolatrous priests—
those who rejoiced over it and (I)over its glory—
for it has departed[d] from them.
(J)The thing itself shall be carried to Assyria
as tribute to (K)the great king.[e]
Ephraim shall be put to shame,
and Israel shall be ashamed (L)of his idol.[f]

(M)Samaria's king shall perish
like a twig on the face of the waters.
The high places of (N)Aven, (O)the sin of Israel,
shall be destroyed.
(P)Thorn and thistle shall grow up
on their altars,
and (Q)they shall say to the mountains, “Cover us,”
and to the hills, “Fall on us.”

From (R)the days of Gibeah, you have sinned, O Israel;
there they have continued.
Shall not the war against the unjust[g] overtake them in Gibeah?
10 (S)When I please, (T)I will discipline them,
and nations shall be gathered against them
when they are bound up for (U)their double iniquity.

11 Ephraim was a trained calf
that (V)loved to thresh,
and I spared her fair neck;
but I will put (W)Ephraim to the yoke;
(X)Judah must plow;
Jacob must harrow for himself.
12 (Y)Sow for yourselves righteousness;
reap steadfast love;
(Z)break up your fallow ground,
for it is the time to seek the Lord,
that he may come and (AA)rain righteousness upon you.

13 (AB)You have plowed iniquity;
you have reaped injustice;
you have eaten the fruit of lies.
Because you have trusted in your own way
and in the multitude of your warriors,
14 therefore (AC)the tumult of war shall arise among your people,
and all your fortresses shall be destroyed,
as (AD)Shalman destroyed Beth-arbel on the day of battle;

(AL)The more they were called,
the more they went away;
(AM)they kept sacrificing to the Baals
and burning offerings to idols.

Yet it was (AN)I who taught Ephraim to walk;

(BD)My heart recoils within me;
my compassion grows warm and tender.
I will not execute my burning anger;
I will not again destroy Ephraim;
(BE)for I am God and not a man,
(BF)the Holy One in your midst,
and I will not come in wrath.[j]

10 (BG)They shall go after the Lord;
(BH)he will roar like a lion;
when he roars,
his children shall come trembling (BI)from the west;
12 Ephraim feeds on the wind
and pursues (BN)the east wind all day long;
they multiply (BO)falsehood and violence;
(BP)they make a covenant with Assyria,
and (BQ)oil is carried to Egypt.

The Lord's Indictment of Israel and Judah

(BR)The Lord has an indictment against Judah
and will punish Jacob according to his ways;
he will repay him according to his deeds.
(BS)In the womb he took his brother by the heel,
and in his manhood he strove with God.
He strove with the angel and prevailed;
he wept and sought his favor.
(BT)He met God[l] at Bethel,
and there God spoke with us—
the Lord, the God of hosts,
(BU)the Lord is his memorial name:
“So you, (BV)by the help of your God, return,
(BW)hold fast to love and justice,
and wait continually for your God.”

A merchant, in whose hands are (BX)false balances,
he loves (BY)to oppress.
Ephraim has said, “Ah, but (BZ)I am rich;
I have found wealth for myself;
in all my labors (CA)they cannot find in me iniquity or sin.”
(CB)I am the Lord your God
from the land of Egypt;
I will again make you (CC)dwell in tents,
as in the days of the appointed feast.

10 (CD)I spoke to the prophets;
it was I who multiplied (CE)visions,
and through the prophets gave parables.
11 (CF)If there is iniquity in Gilead,
they shall surely come to nothing:
(CG)in Gilgal they sacrifice bulls;
(CH)their altars also are like stone heaps
(CI)on the furrows of the field.
12 (CJ)Jacob fled to the land of Aram;
there Israel (CK)served for a wife,
and for a wife he guarded sheep.
13 By (CL)a prophet (CM)the Lord brought Israel up from Egypt,
and by a prophet he was guarded.
14 (CN)Ephraim has given bitter provocation;
so his Lord (CO)will leave his bloodguilt on him
(CP)and will repay him for his disgraceful deeds.

The Lord's Relentless Judgment on Israel

13 When Ephraim spoke, there was trembling;
(CQ)he was exalted in Israel,
but he incurred guilt (CR)through Baal and died.
And now they sin more and more,
and (CS)make for themselves metal images,
idols skillfully made of their silver,
(CT)all of them the work of craftsmen.
It is said of them,
“Those who offer human sacrifice (CU)kiss calves!”
Therefore they shall be (CV)like the morning mist
or (CW)like the dew that goes early away,
(CX)like the chaff that swirls from the threshing floor
or (CY)like smoke from a window.

But (CZ)I am the Lord your God
from the land of Egypt;
(DA)you know no God but me,
and (DB)besides me there is no savior.
(DC)It was I who knew you in the wilderness,
in the land of drought;
(DD)but when they had grazed,[m] they became full,
(DE)they were filled, and their heart was lifted up;
(DF)therefore they forgot me.
So (DG)I am to them like a lion;
(DH)like a leopard I will lurk beside the way.
I will fall upon them (DI)like a bear robbed of her cubs;

12 The iniquity of Ephraim is (DP)bound up;
his sin is (DQ)kept in store.
13 (DR)The pangs of childbirth come for him,
but he is an unwise son,
for at the right time he does not present himself
(DS)at the opening of the womb.

14 (DT)I shall ransom them from the power of Sheol;
(DU)I shall redeem them from Death.[o]
(DV)O (DW)Death, where are your plagues?
(DX)O (DY)Sheol, where is your sting?
(DZ)Compassion is hidden from my eyes.

15 Though (EA)he may flourish among his brothers,
(EB)the east wind, the wind of the Lord, shall come,
rising from the wilderness,
(EC)and his fountain shall dry up;
his spring shall be parched;
it shall strip (ED)his treasury
of every precious thing.
16 [p] Samaria (EE)shall bear her guilt,
because (EF)she has rebelled against her God;
they shall fall by the sword;
(EG)their little ones shall be dashed in pieces,
and their (EH)pregnant women ripped open.

A Plea to Return to the Lord

14 (EI)Return, O Israel, to the Lord your God,
for (EJ)you have stumbled because of your iniquity.
Take with you words
and return to the Lord;
say to him,
“Take away all iniquity;
accept (EK)what is good,
and we will pay with bulls
(EL)the vows[q] of our lips.
(EM)Assyria shall not save us;
(EN)we will not ride on horses;
and (EO)we will say no more, ‘Our God,’
to the work of our hands.
(EP)In you the orphan finds mercy.”

I (EQ)will heal their apostasy;
(ER)I will love them freely,
for my anger has turned from them.
(ES)I will be like the dew to Israel;
(ET)he shall blossom like the lily;
he shall take root like the trees (EU)of Lebanon;
his shoots shall spread out;
his beauty shall be (EV)like the olive,
and his fragrance like Lebanon.
They shall return and (EW)dwell beneath my[r] shadow;
they shall flourish like the grain;
they shall blossom like the vine;
their fame shall be like the wine of Lebanon.

O (EX)Ephraim, what have I to do with idols?
It is I who answer and look after you.[s]
I am like an evergreen cypress;
(EY)from me comes your fruit.

(EZ)Whoever is wise, let him understand these things;
whoever is discerning, let him know them;
for the ways of the Lord are right,
and (FA)the upright walk in them,
(FB)but transgressors stumble in them.

Jude

Greeting

Jude, a servant[a] of Jesus Christ and brother of James,

(A)To those who are called, (B)beloved in God the Father and (C)kept for[b] Jesus Christ:

May (D)mercy, (E)peace, and love be multiplied to you.

Judgment on False Teachers

It is in vain that you rise up early
and go late to rest,
eating the bread of anxious (C)toil;
for he gives to his (D)beloved (E)sleep.

Behold, (F)children are a heritage from the Lord,
(G)the fruit of the womb a reward.
Like arrows in the hand of (H)a warrior
are the children[a] of one's youth.
Blessed is the man
who fills his quiver with them!
He shall not be put to shame
when he speaks with his enemies (I)in the gate.[b]

Proverbs 29:15-17

15 (A)The rod and reproof give wisdom,
but a child left to himself (B)brings shame to his mother.
16 When the wicked increase, transgression increases,
but (C)the righteous will look upon their downfall.
17 (D)Discipline your son, and he will give you rest;
he will give delight to your heart.

Hosea 6-9

Israel and Judah Are Unrepentant

“Come, let us (A)return to the Lord;
for (B)he has torn us, that he may heal us;
he has struck us down, and (C)he will bind us up.
After two days (D)he will revive us;
on the third day he will raise us up,
that we may live before him.
(E)Let us know; (F)let us press on to know the Lord;
(G)his going out is sure as the dawn;
he will come to us (H)as the showers,
(I)as the spring rains that water the earth.”

What shall I do with you, (J)O (K)Ephraim?
What shall I do with you, O (L)Judah?
Your love is (M)like a morning cloud,
(N)like the dew that goes early away.
Therefore I have hewn them by the prophets;
I have slain them (O)by the words of my mouth,
and my judgment goes forth as the light.
For (P)I desire steadfast love[a] and not sacrifice,
(Q)the knowledge of God rather than burnt offerings.

But (R)like Adam they (S)transgressed the covenant;
(T)there they dealt faithlessly with me.
(U)Gilead is a city of evildoers,
(V)tracked with blood.
As robbers (W)lie in wait for a man,
so the priests band together;
they murder on the way to (X)Shechem;
they commit villainy.
10 In the house of Israel I have seen a horrible thing;
(Y)Ephraim's whoredom is there; (Z)Israel is defiled.

11 For you also, O (AA)Judah, (AB)a harvest is appointed.

When (AC)I restore the fortunes of my people,
(AD)when I would heal Israel,
the iniquity of Ephraim is revealed,
and the evil deeds of (AE)Samaria,
for (AF)they deal falsely;
the thief breaks in,
and the bandits raid outside.
But they do not consider
that (AG)I remember all their evil.
Now (AH)their deeds surround them;
(AI)they are before my face.
By their evil (AJ)they make (AK)the king glad,
and the princes by their treachery.
(AL)They are all adulterers;
they are like a heated oven
whose baker ceases to stir the fire,
from the kneading of the dough
until it is leavened.
On the day of (AM)our king, the princes
became sick with the heat of wine;
he stretched out his hand with mockers.
For with hearts like an oven (AN)they approach their intrigue;
all night their anger smolders;
in the morning it blazes like a flaming fire.
All of them are hot as an oven,
and they devour their rulers.
All (AO)their kings (AP)have fallen,
and none of them calls upon me.

Ephraim (AQ)mixes himself with the peoples;
Ephraim is a cake not turned.
(AR)Strangers devour his strength,
and (AS)he knows it not;
gray hairs are sprinkled upon him,
and (AT)he knows it not.
10 (AU)The pride of Israel testifies to his face;[b]
(AV)yet they do not return to the Lord their God,
nor seek him, for all this.

11 Ephraim is like a dove,
(AW)silly and without sense,
calling to (AX)Egypt, going to (AY)Assyria.
12 As they go, (AZ)I will spread over them my net;
I will bring them down like birds of the heavens;
(BA)I will discipline them (BB)according to the report made to their congregation.
13 (BC)Woe to them, for they have strayed from me!
Destruction to them, for they have rebelled against me!
(BD)I would redeem them,
but (BE)they speak lies against me.

14 (BF)They do not cry to me from the heart,
but (BG)they wail upon their beds;
for grain and wine they gash themselves;
they rebel against me.
15 Although (BH)I trained and strengthened their arms,
yet they devise evil against me.
16 They (BI)return, but not upward;[c]
they are (BJ)like a treacherous bow;
their princes shall fall by the sword
because of (BK)the insolence of their tongue.
This shall be their derision (BL)in the land of Egypt.

Israel Will Reap the Whirlwind

Set (BM)the trumpet to your lips!
One (BN)like a vulture is over the house of the Lord,
because (BO)they have transgressed my covenant
and rebelled against my law.
To me they cry,
(BP)“My God, we—Israel—know you.”
Israel has spurned the good;
the enemy shall pursue him.

(BQ)They made kings, (BR)but not through me.
They set up princes, but I knew it not.
With their silver and gold they made idols
for their own destruction.
(BS)I have[d] spurned your calf, O Samaria.
My anger burns against them.
(BT)How long will they be incapable of innocence?
For it is from Israel;
a craftsman made it;
it is not God.
(BU)The calf of Samaria
(BV)shall be broken to pieces.[e]

For (BW)they sow the wind,
and they shall reap the whirlwind.
The standing grain has no heads;
it shall yield no flour;
if it were to yield,
(BX)strangers would devour it.
(BY)Israel is swallowed up;
already they are among the nations
as (BZ)a useless vessel.
For (CA)they have gone up to Assyria,
(CB)a wild donkey wandering alone;
Ephraim has hired lovers.
10 Though they hire allies among the nations,
I will soon gather them up.
And (CC)the king and princes (CD)shall soon writhe
because of the tribute.

11 Because Ephraim (CE)has multiplied altars for sinning,
they have become to him altars for sinning.
12 (CF)Were I to write for him my laws by the ten thousands,
they would be regarded as a strange thing.
13 As for my sacrificial offerings,
(CG)they sacrifice meat and eat it,
but the Lord does not accept them.
(CH)Now he will remember their iniquity
and punish their sins;
(CI)they shall return to Egypt.
14 For (CJ)Israel has forgotten (CK)his Maker
and (CL)built palaces,
and (CM)Judah has multiplied fortified cities;
so (CN)I will send a fire upon his cities,
and it shall devour her strongholds.

The Lord Will Punish Israel

Rejoice not, O Israel!
Exult not like the peoples;
(CO)for you have played the whore, forsaking your God.
(CP)You have loved a prostitute's wages
on all threshing floors.
(CQ)Threshing floor and wine vat shall not feed them,
and (CR)the new wine shall fail them.
They shall not remain in (CS)the land of the Lord,
but (CT)Ephraim shall return to Egypt,
and (CU)they shall eat unclean food in Assyria.

(CV)They shall not pour drink offerings of wine to the Lord,
(CW)and their sacrifices shall not please him.
It shall be like (CX)mourners' bread to them;
all who eat of it shall be defiled;
for their bread shall be for their hunger only;
(CY)it shall not come to the house of the Lord.

(CZ)What will you do on the day of the appointed festival,
and on the day of the feast of the Lord?
For behold, they are going away from destruction;
but (DA)Egypt shall gather them;
Memphis shall bury them.
Nettles shall possess (DB)their precious things of silver;
(DC)thorns shall be in their tents.

(DD)The days of punishment have come;
the days of recompense have come;
Israel shall know it.
(DE)The prophet is a fool;
the man of the spirit is mad,
because of your great iniquity
and great hatred.
The prophet is (DF)the watchman of Ephraim with my God;
yet (DG)a fowler's snare is on all his ways,
and hatred in the house of his God.
(DH)They have deeply corrupted themselves
as (DI)in the days of Gibeah:
(DJ)he will remember their iniquity;
he will punish their sins.

10 Like grapes in the wilderness,
(DK)I found Israel.
Like the first fruit on the fig tree
in its first season,
I saw your fathers.
But (DL)they came to Baal-peor
and (DM)consecrated themselves to the thing of shame,
and (DN)became detestable like the thing they loved.
11 Ephraim's (DO)glory shall fly away like a bird—
(DP)no birth, no pregnancy, no conception!
12 (DQ)Even if they bring up children,
I will bereave them till none is left.
(DR)Woe to them
when (DS)I depart from them!
13 Ephraim, (DT)as I have seen, was like a young palm[f] planted in a meadow;
but (DU)Ephraim must lead his children out to slaughter.[g]
14 Give them, O Lord
what will you give?
Give them (DV)a miscarrying womb
and dry breasts.

15 Every evil of theirs is in (DW)Gilgal;
there I began to hate them.
Because of the wickedness of their deeds
I will drive them out of my house.
I will love them no more;
all (DX)their princes are (DY)rebels.

16 Ephraim is stricken;
(DZ)their root is dried up;
they shall bear no fruit.
Even (EA)though they give birth,
(EB)I will put their beloved children to death.
17 (EC)My God will reject them
because they have not listened to him;
(ED)they shall be wanderers among the nations.

3 John

Greeting

(A)The elder to the beloved Gaius, (B)whom I love in truth.

Beloved, I pray that all may go well with you and that you may be in good health, as it goes well with your soul. For (C)I rejoiced greatly when the brothers[a] came and testified to your truth, as indeed you are walking in the truth. I have no greater joy than to hear that (D)my children are walking in the truth.

Support and Opposition

Beloved, it is a faithful thing you do in all your efforts for (E)these brothers, (F)strangers as they are, who testified to your love before the church. You will do well to send them on their journey in a manner (G)worthy of God. For they have gone out for the sake of (H)the name, (I)accepting nothing from the Gentiles. Therefore we ought to support people like these, that we may be fellow workers for the truth.

I have written something to the church, but Diotrephes, who likes to put himself first, does not acknowledge our authority. 10 So if I come, I will bring up what he is doing, talking wicked nonsense against us. And not content with that, he refuses to welcome the brothers, and also stops those who want to and puts them out of the church.

11 Beloved, (J)do not imitate evil but imitate good. (K)Whoever does good is from God; (L)whoever does evil has not seen God. 12 Demetrius (M)has received a good testimony from everyone, and from the truth itself. We also add our testimony, and (N)you know that our testimony is true.

Final Greetings

13 (O)I had much to write to you, but I would rather not write with pen and ink. 14 I hope to see you soon, and we will talk face to face.

15 Peace be to you. The friends greet you. Greet the friends, (P)each by name.

Psalm 126

Restore Our Fortunes, O Lord

A Song of (A)Ascents.

126 When the Lord (B)restored the fortunes of Zion,
we were like those who (C)dream.
Then our (D)mouth was filled with laughter,
and our tongue with shouts of joy;
then they said among the nations,
(E)“The Lord has done great things for them.”
The Lord has done great things for us;
we are glad.

Restore our fortunes, O Lord,
like streams in the Negeb!
(F)Those who sow in tears
shall reap with shouts of joy!
He who goes out weeping,
bearing the seed for sowing,
shall come home with shouts of joy,
bringing his sheaves with him.

Proverbs 29:12-14

12 If a ruler listens to falsehood,
all his officials will be wicked.
13 The poor man and the oppressor (A)meet together;
the Lord (B)gives light to the eyes of both.
14 If a king (C)faithfully judges the poor,
his throne will (D)be established forever.

Hosea 6-9

Israel and Judah Are Unrepentant

“Come, let us (A)return to the Lord;
for (B)he has torn us, that he may heal us;
he has struck us down, and (C)he will bind us up.
After two days (D)he will revive us;
on the third day he will raise us up,
that we may live before him.
(E)Let us know; (F)let us press on to know the Lord;
(G)his going out is sure as the dawn;
he will come to us (H)as the showers,
(I)as the spring rains that water the earth.”

What shall I do with you, (J)O (K)Ephraim?
What shall I do with you, O (L)Judah?
Your love is (M)like a morning cloud,
(N)like the dew that goes early away.
Therefore I have hewn them by the prophets;
I have slain them (O)by the words of my mouth,
and my judgment goes forth as the light.
For (P)I desire steadfast love[a] and not sacrifice,
(Q)the knowledge of God rather than burnt offerings.

But (R)like Adam they (S)transgressed the covenant;
(T)there they dealt faithlessly with me.
(U)Gilead is a city of evildoers,
(V)tracked with blood.
As robbers (W)lie in wait for a man,
so the priests band together;
they murder on the way to (X)Shechem;
they commit villainy.
10 In the house of Israel I have seen a horrible thing;
(Y)Ephraim's whoredom is there; (Z)Israel is defiled.

11 For you also, O (AA)Judah, (AB)a harvest is appointed.

When (AC)I restore the fortunes of my people,
(AD)when I would heal Israel,
the iniquity of Ephraim is revealed,
and the evil deeds of (AE)Samaria,
for (AF)they deal falsely;
the thief breaks in,
and the bandits raid outside.
But they do not consider
that (AG)I remember all their evil.
Now (AH)their deeds surround them;
(AI)they are before my face.
By their evil (AJ)they make (AK)the king glad,
and the princes by their treachery.
(AL)They are all adulterers;
they are like a heated oven
whose baker ceases to stir the fire,
from the kneading of the dough
until it is leavened.
On the day of (AM)our king, the princes
became sick with the heat of wine;
he stretched out his hand with mockers.
For with hearts like an oven (AN)they approach their intrigue;
all night their anger smolders;
in the morning it blazes like a flaming fire.
All of them are hot as an oven,
and they devour their rulers.
All (AO)their kings (AP)have fallen,
and none of them calls upon me.

Ephraim (AQ)mixes himself with the peoples;
Ephraim is a cake not turned.
(AR)Strangers devour his strength,
and (AS)he knows it not;
gray hairs are sprinkled upon him,
and (AT)he knows it not.

12 As they go, (AZ)I will spread over them my net;
I will bring them down like birds of the heavens;
(BA)I will discipline them (BB)according to the report made to their congregation.
13 (BC)Woe to them, for they have strayed from me!
Destruction to them, for they have rebelled against me!
(BD)I would redeem them,
but (BE)they speak lies against me.

14 (BF)They do not cry to me from the heart,
but (BG)they wail upon their beds;
for grain and wine they gash themselves;
they rebel against me.
15 Although (BH)I trained and strengthened their arms,
yet they devise evil against me.
16 They (BI)return, but not upward;[c]
they are (BJ)like a treacherous bow;
their princes shall fall by the sword
because of (BK)the insolence of their tongue.
This shall be their derision (BL)in the land of Egypt.

Israel Will Reap the Whirlwind

Set (BM)the trumpet to your lips!
One (BN)like a vulture is over the house of the Lord,
because (BO)they have transgressed my covenant
and rebelled against my law.
To me they cry,
(BP)“My God, we—Israel—know you.”
Israel has spurned the good;
the enemy shall pursue him.

For it is from Israel;
a craftsman made it;
it is not God.
(BU)The calf of Samaria
(BV)shall be broken to pieces.[e]

For (BW)they sow the wind,
and they shall reap the whirlwind.
The standing grain has no heads;
it shall yield no flour;
if it were to yield,
(BX)strangers would devour it.
(BY)Israel is swallowed up;
already they are among the nations
as (BZ)a useless vessel.
For (CA)they have gone up to Assyria,
(CB)a wild donkey wandering alone;

(CH)Now he will remember their iniquity
and punish their sins;
(CI)they shall return to Egypt.
14 For (CJ)Israel has forgotten (CK)his Maker
and (CL)built palaces,
and (CM)Judah has multiplied fortified cities;
so (CN)I will send a fire upon his cities,
and it shall devour her strongholds.

The Lord Will Punish Israel

Rejoice not, O Israel!
Exult not like the peoples;

It shall be like (CX)mourners' bread to them;
all who eat of it shall be defiled;
for their bread shall be for their hunger only;
(CY)it shall not come to the house of the Lord.

(CZ)What will you do on the day of the appointed festival,
and on the day of the feast of the Lord?
For behold, they are going away from destruction;
but (DA)Egypt shall gather them;
Memphis shall bury them.
Nettles shall possess (DB)their precious things of silver;
(DC)thorns shall be in their tents.

(DD)The days of punishment have come;
the days of recompense have come;
Israel shall know it.
(DE)The prophet is a fool;
the man of the spirit is mad,
because of your great iniquity
and great hatred.
The prophet is (DF)the watchman of Ephraim with my God;
yet (DG)a fowler's snare is on all his ways,
and hatred in the house of his God.
(DH)They have deeply corrupted themselves
as (DI)in the days of Gibeah:
(DJ)he will remember their iniquity;
he will punish their sins.

10 Like grapes in the wilderness,
(DK)I found Israel.
Like the first fruit on the fig tree
in its first season,
I saw your fathers.
But (DL)they came to Baal-peor
and (DM)consecrated themselves to the thing of shame,
and (DN)became detestable like the thing they loved.
11 Ephraim's (DO)glory shall fly away like a bird—
(DP)no birth, no pregnancy, no conception!
12 (DQ)Even if they bring up children,
I will bereave them till none is left.
(DR)Woe to them
when (DS)I depart from them!
13 Ephraim, (DT)as I have seen, was like a young palm[f] planted in a meadow;
but (DU)Ephraim must lead his children out to slaughter.[g]
14 Give them, O Lord
what will you give?
Give them (DV)a miscarrying womb
and dry breasts.

15 Every evil of theirs is in (DW)Gilgal;
there I began to hate them.
Because of the wickedness of their deeds
I will drive them out of my house.
I will love them no more;
all (DX)their princes are (DY)rebels.

16 Ephraim is stricken;
(DZ)their root is dried up;
they shall bear no fruit.
Even (EA)though they give birth,
(EB)I will put their beloved children to death.
17 (EC)My God will reject them
because they have not listened to him;
(ED)they shall be wanderers among the nations.

3 John

  1. 3 John 1:3 Or brothers and sisters. In New Testament usage, depending on the context, the plural Greek word adelphoi (translated “brothers”) may refer either to brothers or to brothers and sisters; also verses 5, 10

Psalm 126

Restore Our Fortunes, O Lord

A Song of (A)Ascents.

126 When the Lord (B)restored the fortunes of Zion,
we were like those who (C)dream.
Then our (D)mouth was filled with laughter,
and our tongue with shouts of joy;
then they said among the nations,
(E)“The Lord has done great things for them.”
The Lord has done great things for us;
we are glad.

Restore our fortunes, O Lord,
like streams in the Negeb!
(F)Those who sow in tears
shall reap with shouts of joy!
He who goes out weeping,
bearing the seed for sowing,
shall come home with shouts of joy,
bringing his sheaves with him.

Proverbs 29:12-14

12 If a ruler listens to falsehood,
all his officials will be wicked.
13 The poor man and the oppressor (A)meet together;
the Lord (B)gives light to the eyes of both.
14 If a king (C)faithfully judges the poor,
his throne will (D)be established forever.

Hosea 4-5

The Lord Accuses Israel

(A)Hear the word of the Lord, O children of Israel,
for (B)the Lord has a controversy with the inhabitants of the land.
There is no faithfulness or steadfast love,
and (C)no knowledge of God in the land;
(D)there is swearing, lying, murder, stealing, and committing adultery;
they break all bounds, and (E)bloodshed follows bloodshed.
Therefore (F)the land mourns,
and all who dwell in it languish,
(G)and also the beasts of the field
and the birds of the heavens,
(H)and even the fish of the sea are taken away.

(I)Yet let no one contend,
and let none accuse,
for with you is (J)my contention, O priest.[a]
You shall stumble by day;
the prophet also shall stumble with you by night;
and I will destroy (K)your mother.
My people are destroyed (L)for lack of knowledge;
(M)because you have rejected knowledge,
I reject you (N)from being a priest to me.
And since you have forgotten the law of your God,
(O)I also will forget your children.

(P)The more they increased,
the more they sinned against me;
(Q)I will change their glory into shame.
(R)They feed on the sin[b] of my people;
they are greedy for their iniquity.
(S)And it shall be like people, like priest;
I will punish them for their ways
and repay them for their deeds.
10 (T)They shall eat, but not be satisfied;
they shall play the whore, but not multiply,
because they have forsaken the Lord
to cherish 11 whoredom, wine, and new wine,
which (U)take away the understanding.
12 My people (V)inquire of a piece of wood,
and their walking staff gives them oracles.
For (W)a spirit of whoredom has led them astray,
and they have left their God to play the whore.
13 (X)They sacrifice on the tops of the mountains
and burn offerings on the hills,
(Y)under oak, poplar, and terebinth,
because their shade is good.
Therefore your daughters play the whore,
and your brides commit adultery.
14 I will not punish your daughters when they play the whore,
nor your brides when they commit adultery;
for (Z)the men themselves go aside with prostitutes
and sacrifice with (AA)cult prostitutes,
and a people (AB)without understanding shall come to ruin.

15 Though you play the whore, O (AC)Israel,
let not (AD)Judah become guilty.
(AE)Enter not into (AF)Gilgal,
nor go up to (AG)Beth-aven,
and swear not, “As the Lord lives.”
16 Like a stubborn heifer,
Israel is stubborn;
can the Lord now feed them
like a lamb in a broad pasture?

17 (AH)Ephraim is joined to idols;
(AI)leave him alone.
18 When their drink is gone, they give themselves to whoring;
(AJ)their rulers[c] dearly love shame.
19 (AK)A wind has wrapped them[d] in its wings,
and they shall (AL)be ashamed because of their sacrifices.

Punishment Coming for Israel and Judah

(AM)Hear this, O priests!
Pay attention, O house of Israel!
Give ear, O house of the king!
For the judgment is for you;
for (AN)you have been a snare at Mizpah
and a net spread upon (AO)Tabor.
And (AP)the revolters (AQ)have gone deep into slaughter,
but (AR)I will discipline all of them.

(AS)I know Ephraim,
and Israel is not hidden from me;
for now, O Ephraim, you have played the whore;
Israel is defiled.
(AT)Their deeds do not permit them
to return to their God.
For (AU)the spirit of whoredom is within them,
and they know not the Lord.

(AV)The pride of Israel testifies to his face;[e]
Israel and (AW)Ephraim shall stumble in his guilt;
(AX)Judah also shall stumble with them.
(AY)With their flocks and herds they shall go
to seek the Lord,
(AZ)but they will not find him;
(BA)he has withdrawn from them.
(BB)They have dealt faithlessly with the Lord;
for they have borne alien children.
Now the new moon shall devour them with their fields.

(BC)Blow the horn in (BD)Gibeah,
the trumpet in (BE)Ramah.
Sound the alarm at (BF)Beth-aven;
we follow you,[f] O Benjamin!
Ephraim shall become a desolation
in the day of punishment;
among the tribes of Israel
I make known what is sure.
10 The princes of Judah have become
like (BG)those who move the landmark;
upon them I will pour out
my wrath like water.
11 Ephraim is (BH)oppressed, crushed in judgment,
because he was determined to go after filth.[g]
12 But I am (BI)like a moth to Ephraim,
and (BJ)like dry rot to the house of Judah.

13 When Ephraim saw his sickness,
and Judah (BK)his wound,
then Ephraim went (BL)to Assyria,
and sent to the great king.[h]
(BM)But he is not able to cure you
or heal (BN)your wound.
14 For I will be (BO)like a lion to (BP)Ephraim,
and like a young lion to the house of (BQ)Judah.
(BR)I, even I, will tear and go away;
I will carry off, and no one shall rescue.

15 (BS)I will return again to my place,
until they acknowledge their guilt and seek my face,
and (BT)in their distress earnestly seek me.

2 John

Greeting

(A)The elder to the elect lady and her children, (B)whom I love in truth, and not only I, but also all who (C)know (D)the truth, (E)because of the truth that abides in us and will be with us forever:

(F)Grace, mercy, and peace will be with us, from God the Father and from Jesus Christ the Father's Son, in truth and love.

Walking in Truth and Love

(G)I rejoiced greatly to find some of your children walking in the truth, just as we were commanded by the Father. And now I ask you, dear lady—(H)not as though I were writing you a new commandment, but the one we have had from the beginning—(I)that we love one another. And (J)this is love, that we walk according to his commandments; this is the commandment, just (K)as you have heard from the beginning, so that you should walk in it. For (L)many deceivers (M)have gone out into the world, (N)those who do not confess the coming of Jesus Christ in the flesh. Such a one is the deceiver and the antichrist. Watch yourselves, (O)so that you may not lose what we[a] have worked for, but (P)may win a full reward. Everyone who goes on ahead and does not abide in the teaching of Christ, (Q)does not have God. Whoever abides in the teaching (R)has both the Father and the Son. 10 If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, (S)do not receive him into your house or give him any greeting, 11 for whoever greets him (T)takes part in his wicked works.

Final Greetings

12 (U)Though I have much to write to you, I would rather not use paper and ink. (V)Instead I hope to come to you and talk face to face, (W)so that our joy may be complete.

13 The children of your elect sister greet you.

Psalm 125

The Lord Surrounds His People

A Song of (A)Ascents.

125 Those who (B)trust in the Lord are like Mount Zion,
which (C)cannot be moved, but abides forever.
As the mountains surround Jerusalem,
so (D)the Lord surrounds his people,
from this time forth and forevermore.
For (E)the scepter of wickedness shall not (F)rest
on (G)the land allotted to the righteous,
lest the righteous (H)stretch out
their hands to do wrong.
(I)Do good, O Lord, to those who are good,
and to those who are (J)upright in their hearts!
But those who (K)turn aside to their (L)crooked ways
the Lord will lead away with (M)evildoers!
(N)Peace be upon Israel!

Proverbs 29:9-11

If a wise man has an argument with a fool,
the fool only rages and laughs, and there is (A)no quiet.
10 Bloodthirsty men (B)hate one who is blameless
and seek the life of the upright.[a]
11 A fool gives full vent to his spirit,
but a wise man quietly holds it back.

Hosea 1-3

The word of the Lord that came to Hosea son of Beeri during the reigns of Uzziah,(A) Jotham,(B) Ahaz,(C) and Hezekiah,(D) kings of Judah, and of Jeroboam(E) son of Jehoash, king of Israel.

Hosea’s Marriage and Children

When the Lord first spoke to Hosea, he said this to him:

Go and marry a woman of promiscuity,(F)
and have children of promiscuity,
for the land is committing blatant acts of promiscuity
by abandoning the Lord.

So he went and married Gomer daughter of Diblaim, and she conceived and bore him a son.(G) Then the Lord said to him:

Name him Jezreel,[a](H) for in a little while
I will bring the bloodshed of Jezreel(I)
on the house of Jehu(J)
and put an end to the kingdom of the house of Israel.
On that day I will break the bow of Israel(K)
in Jezreel Valley.(L)

She conceived again and gave birth to a daughter, and the Lord said to him:

Name her Lo-ruhamah,[b]
for I will no longer have compassion
on the house of Israel.
I will certainly take them away.
But I will have compassion on the house of Judah,(M)
and I will deliver them by the Lord their God.(N)
I will not deliver them by bow, sword, or war,
or by horses and cavalry.(O)

After Gomer had weaned Lo-ruhamah, she conceived and gave birth to a son. Then the Lord said:

Name him Lo-ammi,[c]
for you are not my people,
and I will not be your God.[d](P)
10 Yet the number of the Israelites
will be like the sand of the sea,(Q)
which cannot be measured or counted.
And in the place where they were told:
You are not my people,
they will be called: Sons of the living God.(R)
11 And the Judeans and the Israelites
will be gathered together.(S)
They will appoint for themselves a single ruler(T)
and go up from[e] the land.
For the day of Jezreel(U) will be great.
Call[f] your brothers: My People
and your sisters: Compassion.

Israel’s Adultery Rebuked

Rebuke your mother; rebuke her.(V)
For she is not my wife and I am not her husband.(W)
Let her remove the promiscuous look from her face(X)
and her adultery from between her breasts.
Otherwise, I will strip her naked(Y)
and expose her as she was on the day of her birth.
I will make her like a desert(Z)
and like a parched land,
and I will let her die of thirst.(AA)
I will have no compassion on her children(AB)
because they are the children of promiscuity.
Yes, their mother is promiscuous;
she conceived them and acted shamefully.(AC)
For she thought, “I will follow my lovers,(AD)
the men who give me my food and water,
my wool and flax, my oil and drink.”(AE)
Therefore, this is what I will do:
I will block her[g] way(AF) with thorns;(AG)
I will enclose her with a wall,
so that she cannot find her paths.(AH)
She will pursue her lovers but not catch them;(AI)
she will look for them but not find them.
Then she will think,
“I will go back to my former husband,(AJ)
for then it was better for me than now.”(AK)
She does not recognize(AL)
that it is I who gave her the grain,(AM)
the new wine, and the fresh oil.
I lavished silver and gold on her,
which they used for Baal.
Therefore, I will take back my grain in its time(AN)
and my new wine in its season;
I will take away my wool and linen,
which were to cover her nakedness.
10 Now I will expose her shame(AO)
in the sight of her lovers,
and no one will rescue her from my power.
11 I will put an end to all her celebrations:(AP)
her feasts,(AQ) New Moons,(AR) and Sabbaths—
all her festivals.
12 I will devastate her vines and fig trees.(AS)
She thinks that these are her wages
that her lovers have given her.
I will turn them into a thicket,(AT)
and the wild animals will eat them.(AU)
13 And I will punish her for the days of the Baals,(AV)
to which she burned incense.(AW)
She put on her rings and her jewelry(AX)
and followed her lovers,
but she forgot me.(AY)

This is the Lord’s declaration.

Israel’s Adultery Forgiven

14 Therefore, I am going to persuade her,
lead her to the wilderness,(AZ)
and speak tenderly to her.[h]
15 There I will give her vineyards back to her(BA)
and make the Valley of Achor[i](BB)
into a gateway of hope.
There she will respond as she did
in the days of her youth,(BC)
as in the day she came out of the land of Egypt.
16 In that day—
this is the Lord’s declaration—
you will call me “my husband”(BD)
and no longer call me “my Baal.”[j]
17 For I will remove the names of the Baals
from her mouth;
they will no longer be remembered by their names.
18 On that day I will make a covenant for them
with the wild animals, the birds of the sky,
and the creatures that crawl on the ground.(BE)
I will shatter bow, sword,
and weapons of war in the land[k](BF)
and will enable the people to rest securely.(BG)
19 I will take you to be my wife forever.(BH)
I will take you to be my wife in righteousness,
justice, love, and compassion.(BI)
20 I will take you to be my wife in faithfulness,
and you will know the Lord.(BJ)
21 On that day I will respond(BK)
this is the Lord’s declaration.
I will respond to the sky,
and it will respond to the earth.
22 The earth will respond to the grain,(BL)
the new wine, and the fresh oil,
and they will respond to Jezreel.
23 I will sow her[l] in the land for myself,(BM)
and I will have compassion(BN)
on Lo-ruhamah;
I will say to Lo-ammi:(BO)
You are my people,(BP)
and he will say, “You are my God.”

Waiting for Restoration

Then the Lord said to me, “Go again; show love to a woman who is loved by another man and is an adulteress,(BQ) just as the Lord loves the Israelites though they turn to other gods and love raisin cakes.”(BR)

So I bought her for fifteen shekels of silver and nine bushels of barley.[m][n](BS) I said to her, “You are to live with me many days. You must not be promiscuous or belong to any man, and I will act the same way toward you.”

For the Israelites must live many days without king or prince,(BT) without sacrifice(BU) or sacred pillar,(BV) and without ephod(BW) or household idols.(BX) Afterward, the people of Israel will return(BY) and seek the Lord their God and David their king.(BZ) They will come with awe to the Lord(CA) and to his goodness in the last days.

1 John 5

Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God,(A) and everyone who loves the Father[a] also loves the one born of him. This is how we know that we love God’s children: when we love God and obey[b] his commands. For this is what love for God is: to keep his commands. And his commands are not a burden,(B) because everyone who has been born of God conquers the world. This is the victory that has conquered the world: our faith.

The Certainty of God’s Testimony

Who is the one who conquers the world(C) but the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?(D) Jesus Christ—he is the one who came by water and blood, not by water only, but by water(E) and by blood.(F) And the Spirit is the one who testifies,(G) because the Spirit is the truth. For there are three that testify:[c](H) the Spirit,(I) the water, and the blood(J)—and these three are in agreement. If we accept human testimony, God’s testimony(K) is greater, because it is God’s testimony that he has given about his Son. 10 The one who believes in the Son of God has this testimony within himself. The one who does not believe God has made him a liar,(L) because he has not believed in the testimony God has given about his Son. 11 And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 12 The one who has the Son has life.(M) The one who does not have the Son of God does not have life. 13 I have written these things to you who believe in the name(N) of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life.

Effective Prayer

14 This is the confidence we have before him: If we ask(O) anything according to his will, he hears us.(P) 15 And if we know that he hears whatever we ask,(Q) we know that we have what we have asked of him.(R)

16 If anyone sees a fellow believer[d] committing a sin that doesn’t lead to death, he should ask, and God will give life to him—to those who commit sin that doesn’t lead to death. There is sin[e] that leads to death. I am not saying he should pray about that. 17 All unrighteousness is sin, and there is sin that doesn’t lead to death.

Conclusion

18 We know that everyone who has been born of God does not sin, but the one who is born of God keeps him,[f](S) and the evil one does not touch him. 19 We know that we are of God, and the whole world is under the sway of the evil one. 20 And we know that the Son of God has come(T) and has given us understanding so that we may know the true one.[g] We are in the true one—that is, in his Son, Jesus Christ.(U) He is the true God and eternal life.

21 Little children, guard yourselves from idols.

Psalm 124

The Lord Is on Our Side

A song of ascents. Of David.

If the Lord had not been on our side—
let Israel say—
if the Lord had not been on our side(A)
when people attacked us,(B)
then they would have swallowed us alive
in their burning anger against us.(C)
Then the water would have engulfed us;
the torrent would have swept over us;
the raging water would have swept over us.(D)

Blessed be the Lord,
who has not let us be ripped apart by their teeth.(E)
We have escaped like a bird from the hunter’s net;
the net is torn, and we have escaped.(F)
Our help is in the name of the Lord,
the Maker of heaven and earth.(G)

The Daily Audio Bible Reading for Friday December 4, 2020 (NIV)

Daniel 11:36-12:13

36 “Then the king will do whatever he wants.(A) He will exalt and magnify himself above every god,(B) and he will say outrageous things against the God of gods.(C) He will be successful until the time of wrath is completed,(D) because what has been decreed will be accomplished. 37 He will not show regard for the gods[a] of his ancestors, the god desired by women, or for any other god,(E) because he will magnify himself above all. 38 Instead, he will honor a god of fortresses—a god his ancestors did not know—with gold, silver, precious stones, and riches. 39 He will deal with the strongest fortresses with the help of a foreign god. He will greatly honor those who acknowledge him,[b] making them rulers over many and distributing land as a reward.

40 “At the time of the end, the king of the South will engage him in battle, but the king of the North will storm against him(F) with chariots, horsemen, and many ships. He will invade countries and sweep through them like a flood.(G) 41 He will also invade the beautiful land,(H) and many will fall. But these will escape from his power: Edom, Moab, and the prominent people[c] of the Ammonites.(I) 42 He will extend his power against the countries, and not even the land of Egypt will escape. 43 He will get control over the hidden treasures of gold and silver and over all the riches of Egypt. The Libyans and Cushites will also be in submission.[d](J) 44 But reports from the east(K) and the north will terrify him, and he will go out with great fury to annihilate and completely destroy many. 45 He will pitch his royal tents between the sea and[e] the beautiful holy mountain,(L) but he will meet his end with no one to help him.

12 At that time
Michael,(M) the great prince
who stands watch over your people, will rise up.
There will be a time of distress(N)
such as never has occurred(O)
since nations came into being until that time.(P)
But at that time all your people
who are found written in the book(Q) will escape.(R)
Many who sleep in the dust(S)
of the earth will awake,
some to eternal life,(T)
and some to disgrace and eternal contempt.(U)
Those who have insight will shine
like the bright expanse of the heavens,(V)
and those who lead many to righteousness,(W)
like the stars forever and ever.

“But you, Daniel, keep these words secret(X) and seal the book(Y) until the time of the end.(Z) Many will roam about,(AA) and knowledge will increase.”[f]

Then I, Daniel, looked, and two others were standing there, one on this bank of the river and one on the other. One of them said to the man dressed in linen,(AB) who was above the water of the river,(AC) “How long until the end(AD) of these wondrous things?” Then I heard the man dressed in linen, who was above the water of the river. He raised both his hands[g](AE) toward heaven and swore by him who lives eternally(AF) that it would be for a time, times, and half a time.(AG) When the power of the holy people is shattered, all these things will be completed.

I heard but did not understand. So I asked, “My lord, what will be the outcome of these things?” (AH)

He said, “Go on your way, Daniel, for the words are secret(AI) and sealed until the time of the end.(AJ) 10 Many will be purified,(AK) cleansed, and refined,(AL) but the wicked will act wickedly;(AM) none of the wicked will understand, but those who have insight will understand.(AN) 11 From the time the daily sacrifice is abolished and the abomination of desolation(AO) is set up,(AP) there will be 1,290 days. 12 Happy is the one who waits(AQ) for and reaches 1,335 days. 13 But as for you, go on your way to the end;[h] you will rest, and then you will rise[i] to receive(AR) your allotted inheritance at the end of the days.”

1 John 4

The Spirit of Truth and the Spirit of Error

Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits(A) to see if they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.

This is how you know the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh(B) is from God,(C) but every spirit that does not confess Jesus[a] is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist,(D) which you have heard is coming; even now it is already in the world.

You are from God, little children, and you have conquered them, because the one who is in you(E) is greater than the one who is in the world.(F) They are from the world.(G) Therefore what they say is from the world, and the world listens to them. We are from God. Anyone who knows God listens to us;(H) anyone who is not from God does not listen to us. This is how we know the Spirit of truth and the spirit of deception.(I)

Knowing God through Love

Dear friends, let us love one another, because love is from God, and everyone who loves has been born of God(J) and knows God. The one who does not love does not know God, because God is love. God’s love was revealed among us[b] in this way: God sent(K) his one and only Son(L) into the world so that we might live(M) through him. 10 Love consists in this: not that we loved God, but that he loved us(N) and sent his Son to be the atoning sacrifice[c](O) for our sins. 11 Dear friends, if God loved us in this way, we also must love one another.(P) 12 No one has ever seen God.(Q) If we love one another, God remains in[d] us and his love is made complete in us. 13 This is how we know that we remain in him(R) and he in us: He has given us of his Spirit.(S) 14 And we have seen and we testify that the Father has sent his Son(T) as the world’s Savior. 15 Whoever confesses(U) that Jesus is the Son of God—God remains in him and he in God. 16 And we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us.

God is love, and the one who remains in love remains in God, and God remains in him. 17 In this, love is made complete with us so that we may have confidence in the day of judgment,(V) because as he is, so also are we in this world.(W) 18 There is no fear in love; instead, perfect love drives out fear,(X) because fear involves punishment.[e] So the one who fears is not complete in love.(Y) 19 We love[f] because he first loved us.(Z) 20 If anyone says, “I love God,” and yet hates his brother or sister,(AA) he is a liar.(AB) For the person who does not love his brother or sister(AC) whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen.[g] 21 And we have this command from him: The one who loves God must also love his brother and sister.

Daniel 11:2-35

Now I will tell you the truth.(A)

Prophecies about Persia and Greece

“Three more kings will arise in Persia, and the fourth will be far richer than the others. By the power he gains through his riches, he will stir up everyone against the kingdom of Greece.(B) Then a warrior king will arise; he will rule a vast realm and do whatever he wants.(C) But as soon as he is established, his kingdom will be broken up and divided to the four winds of heaven,(D) but not to his descendants; it will not be the same kingdom that he ruled, because his kingdom will be uprooted and will go to others besides them.(E)

Kings of the South and the North

“The king of the South(F) will grow powerful, but one of his commanders will grow more powerful and will rule a kingdom greater than his. After some years they will form an alliance, and the daughter of the king of the South will go to the king of the North(G) to seal the agreement. She will not retain power, and his strength will not endure. She will be given up, together with her entourage, her father,[a] and the one who supported her during those times. In the place of the king of the South, one from her family[b] will rise up, come against the army, and enter the fortress of the king of the North. He will take action against them and triumph. He will take even their gods captive to Egypt, with their metal images and their precious articles of silver and gold.(H) For some years he will stay away from the king of the North, who will enter the kingdom of the king of the South and then return to his own land.

10 “His sons will mobilize for war and assemble a large number of armed forces. They will advance, sweeping through like a flood,[c](I) and will again wage war as far as his fortress. 11 Infuriated, the king of the South will march out to fight with the king of the North, who will raise a large army, but they will be handed over to his enemy. 12 When the army is carried off, he will become arrogant and cause tens of thousands to fall, but he will not triumph. 13 The king of the North will again raise a multitude larger than the first. After some years[d](J) he will advance with a great army and many supplies.

14 “In those times many will rise up against the king of the South. Violent ones among your own people will assert themselves to fulfill a vision, but they will fail. 15 Then the king of the North will come, build up a siege ramp,(K) and capture a well-fortified city. The forces of the South will not stand; even their select troops will not be able to resist. 16 The king of the North who comes against him will do whatever he wants,(L) and no one can oppose him. He will establish himself in the beautiful land[e](M) with total destruction in his hand. 17 He will resolve(N) to come with the force of his whole kingdom and will reach an agreement with him.[f] He will give him a daughter in marriage[g] to destroy it,[h] but she will not stand with him or support him. 18 Then he will turn his attention to the coasts and islands[i](O) and capture many. But a commander will put an end to his taunting; instead, he will turn his taunts against him.(P) 19 He will turn his attention back to the fortresses of his own land, but he will stumble, fall,(Q) and be no more.(R)

20 “In his place one will arise who will send out a tax collector(S) for the glory of the kingdom; but within a few days he will be broken, though not in anger[j] or in battle.

21 “In his place a despised(T) person will arise; royal honors will not be given to him, but he will come during a time of peace[k](U) and seize the kingdom by intrigue. 22 A flood of forces will be swept away before him; they will be broken, as well as the covenant prince. 23 After an alliance is made with him, he will act deceitfully. He will rise to power with a small nation.[l] 24 During a time of peace,[m] he will come into the richest parts of the province(V) and do what his fathers and predecessors never did. He will lavish plunder, loot, and wealth on his followers, and he will make plans against fortified cities, but only for a time.

25 “With a large army he will stir up his power and his courage against the king of the South. The king of the South will prepare for battle with an extremely large and powerful army, but he will not succeed, because plots will be made against him. 26 Those who eat his provisions(W) will destroy him; his army will be swept away, and many will fall slain. 27 The two kings, whose hearts are bent on evil, will speak lies(X) at the same table but to no avail, for still the end will come at the appointed time.(Y) 28 The king of the North will return to his land with great wealth, but his heart will be set against the holy covenant;[n] he will take action, then return to his own land.

29 “At the appointed time he will come again to the South, but this time[o] will not be like the first. 30 Ships of Kittim[p](Z) will come against him, and being intimidated, he will withdraw. Then he will rage against the holy covenant and take action. On his return, he will favor those who abandon the holy covenant. 31 His forces will rise up and desecrate the temple fortress. They will abolish the regular sacrifice(AA) and set up the abomination of desolation.(AB) 32 With flattery he will corrupt those who act wickedly toward the covenant, but the people who know their God will be strong and take action.(AC) 33 Those who have insight among the people(AD) will give understanding to many, yet they will fall by the sword and flame,(AE) and they will be captured and plundered for a time. 34 When they fall, they will be helped by some, but many others will join them insincerely.(AF) 35 Some of those who have insight will fall so that they may be refined,(AG) purified, and cleansed(AH) until the time of the end, for it will still come at the appointed time.

1 John 3:7-24

Little children, let no one deceive you. The one who does what is right is righteous, just as he is righteous. The one who commits[a] sin is of the devil, for the devil has sinned from the beginning. The Son of God(A) was revealed(B) for this purpose: to destroy the devil’s works. Everyone who has been born of God(C) does not sin,[b] because his seed(D) remains in him; he is not able to sin,[c] because he has been born of God. 10 This is how God’s children and the devil’s children become obvious. Whoever does not do what is right is not of God, especially the one who does not love his brother or sister.(E)

Love in Action

11 For this is the message you have heard from the beginning: We should love one another, 12 unlike Cain,(F) who was of the evil one(G) and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? Because his deeds were evil, and his brother’s were righteous.

13 Do not be surprised, brothers and sisters, if the world hates(H) you. 14 We know that we have passed from death to life because we love our brothers and sisters. The one who does not love remains in death.(I) 15 Everyone who hates his brother or sister(J) is a murderer,(K) and you know that no murderer has eternal life residing in him. 16 This is how we have come to know love: He laid down his life(L) for us.(M) We should also lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters.(N) 17 If anyone has this world’s goods(O) and sees a fellow believer[d] in need(P) but withholds compassion(Q) from him—how does God’s love reside in him?(R) 18 Little children, let us not love in word or speech, but in action and in truth.(S)

19 This is how we will know that we belong to the truth(T) and will reassure our hearts before him 20 whenever our hearts condemn us; for God is greater than our hearts, and he knows all things.(U)

21 Dear friends, if our hearts don’t condemn us, we have confidence before God 22 and receive whatever we ask from him because we keep his commands(V) and do what is pleasing in his sight. 23 Now this is his command: that we believe in the name(W) of his Son, Jesus Christ, and love one another as he commanded us. 24 The one who keeps his commands remains in him,(X) and he in him. And the way we know that he remains in us(Y) is from the Spirit(Z) he has given us.

A Prayer for Jerusalem

A song of ascents. Of David.

I rejoiced with those who said to me,
“Let’s go to the house of the Lord.”(A)
Our feet were standing

Jerusalem, built as a city should be,
solidly united,(C)
where the tribes, the Lord’s tribes, go up
to give thanks to the name of the Lord.(D)
(This is an ordinance for Israel.(E))
There, thrones for judgment are placed,
thrones of the house of David.(F)

Pray for the well-being[a] of Jerusalem:
“May those who love you be secure;(G)
may there be peace within your walls,
security within your fortresses.”(H)
Because of my brothers and friends,
I will say, “May peace be in you.”[b](I)

I will pursue your prosperity.(J)

Daniel 9:1-11

Daniel’s Prayer

In the first year of Darius,(A) the son of Ahasuerus, a Mede by birth, who was made king over the Chaldean kingdom— in the first year of his reign, I, Daniel, understood from the books according to the word of the Lord to the prophet Jeremiah that the number of years for the desolation of Jerusalem would be seventy.(B) So I turned my attention to the Lord God to seek him by prayer and petitions, with fasting, sackcloth, and ashes.(C)

I prayed to the Lord my God and confessed:

Ah, Lord—the great and awe-inspiring God(D) who keeps his gracious covenant(E) with those who love him(F) and keep his commands(G) we have sinned,(H) done wrong, acted wickedly, rebelled,(I) and turned away from your commands and ordinances.(J) We have not listened to your servants the prophets,(K) who spoke in your name to our kings, leaders, ancestors, and all the people of the land.

Lord, righteousness belongs to you,(L) but this day public shame belongs to us: the men of Judah, the residents of Jerusalem, and all Israel—those who are near and those who are far, in all the countries where you have banished them because of the disloyalty they have shown toward you. Lord, public shame(M) belongs to us, our kings, our leaders, and our ancestors, because we have sinned against you.(N) Compassion and forgiveness belong to the Lord our God, though we have rebelled against him 10 and have not obeyed the Lord our God by following his instructions that he set before us through his servants(O) the prophets.

11 All Israel has broken your law and turned away,(P) refusing to obey you. The promised curse[a] written in the law of Moses,(Q) the servant of God, has been poured out on us because we have sinned against him. 12 He has carried out his words(R) that he spoke against us and against our rulers[b](S) by bringing on us a disaster that is so great that nothing like what has been done to Jerusalem has ever been done(T) under all of heaven. 13 Just as it is written in the law of Moses,(U) all this disaster has come on us, yet we have not sought the favor of(V) the Lord our God by turning from our iniquities and paying attention to your truth.(W) 14 So the Lord kept the disaster in mind and brought it on us, for the Lord our God is righteous in all he has done. But we have not obeyed him.

15 Now, Lord our God—who brought your people out of the land of Egypt with a strong hand(X) and made your name renowned(Y) as it is this day—we have sinned, we have acted wickedly. 16 Lord, in keeping with all your righteous acts, may your anger and wrath(Z) turn away from your city Jerusalem, your holy mountain;(AA) for because of our sins and the iniquities of our ancestors, Jerusalem and your people have become an object of ridicule to all those around us.

17 Therefore, our God, hear the prayer and the petitions of your servant. Make your face shine(AB) on your desolate sanctuary(AC) for the Lord’s sake. 18 Listen closely,[c] my God, and hear. Open your eyes and see our desolations and the city that bears your name. For we are not presenting our petitions before you based on our righteous acts, but based on your abundant compassion. 19 Lord, hear! Lord, forgive! Lord, listen and act! My God, for your own sake, do not delay,(AD) because your city and your people bear your name.

The Seventy Weeks of Years

20 While I was speaking, praying, confessing my sin and the sin of my people Israel,(AE) and presenting my petition before the Lord my God concerning the holy mountain of my God— 21 while I was praying, Gabriel,(AF) the man I had seen in the first vision,(AG) reached me in my extreme weariness, about the time of the evening offering.(AH) 22 He gave me this explanation: “Daniel, I’ve come now to give you understanding.(AI) 23 At the beginning of your petitions an answer went out, and I have come to give it, for you are treasured by God.[d](AJ) So consider the message and understand the vision:(AK)

24 Seventy weeks are decreed(AL)
about your people and your holy city—
to bring the rebellion to an end,
to put a stop to sin,
to atone for iniquity,
to bring in everlasting righteousness,(AM)
to seal up vision and prophecy,
and to anoint the most holy place.
25 Know and understand this:
From the issuing of the decree
to restore and rebuild Jerusalem(AN)
until an Anointed One,(AO) the ruler,[e]
will be seven weeks and sixty-two weeks.
It will be rebuilt with a plaza and a moat,
but in difficult times.
26 After those sixty-two weeks
the Anointed One will be cut off(AP)
and will have nothing.
The people of the coming ruler
will destroy the city(AQ) and the sanctuary.[f]
The[g] end will come with a flood,(AR)
and until the end there will be[h] war;
desolations are decreed.
27 He will make a firm covenant[i]
with many for one week,
but in the middle of the week
he will put a stop to sacrifice and offering.
And the abomination of desolation(AS)
will be on a wing(AT) of the temple[j][k]
until the decreed destruction(AU)
is poured out on the desolator.”

Vision of a Glorious One

10 In the third year of King Cyrus of Persia,(AV) a message was revealed to Daniel, who was named Belteshazzar.(AW) The message was true and was about a great conflict. He understood the message and had understanding of the vision.(AX)

In those days I, Daniel, was mourning for three full weeks.(AY) I didn’t eat any rich food,(AZ) no meat or wine entered my mouth, and I didn’t put any oil on my body until the three weeks were over. On the twenty-fourth day of the first month,[l] as I was standing on the bank of the great river,(BA) the Tigris, I looked up, and there was a man dressed in linen,(BB) with a belt of gold(BC) from Uphaz[m](BD) around his waist. His body was like beryl,[n] his face like the brilliance of lightning, his eyes like flaming torches,(BE) his arms and feet like the gleam of polished bronze, and the sound of his words like the sound of a multitude.(BF)

Only I, Daniel, saw the vision.(BG) The men who were with me did not see it,(BH) but a great terror fell on them,(BI) and they ran and hid. I was left alone, looking at this great vision.(BJ) No strength was left in me; my face grew deathly pale,[o](BK) and I was powerless. I heard the words he said, and when I heard them I fell into a deep sleep,[p](BL) with my face to the ground.

Angelic Conflict

10 Suddenly, a hand touched me and set me shaking on my hands and knees. 11 He said to me, “Daniel, you are a man treasured by God.[q](BM) Understand the words that I’m saying to you. Stand on your feet,(BN) for I have now been sent to you.”(BO) After he said this to me, I stood trembling.

12 “Don’t be afraid,(BP) Daniel,” he said to me, “for from the first day that you purposed to understand and to humble yourself before your God,(BQ) your prayers were heard. I have come because of your prayers.(BR) 13 But the prince of the kingdom of Persia opposed me for twenty-one days. Then Michael,(BS) one of the chief princes, came to help me after I had been left there with the kings of Persia.(BT) 14 Now I have come to help you understand what will happen to your people in the last days,(BU) for the vision refers to those days.”(BV)

15 While he was saying these words to me, I turned my face toward the ground and was speechless.(BW) 16 Suddenly one with human likeness(BX) touched my lips.(BY) I opened my mouth and said to the one standing in front of me, “My lord, because of the vision, anguish overwhelms me and I am powerless.(BZ) 17 How can someone like me,(CA) your servant,[r] speak with someone like you, my lord? Now I have no strength, and there is no breath in me.”

18 Then the one with a human appearance touched me again and strengthened me.(CB) 19 He said, “Don’t be afraid,(CC) you who are[s] treasured by God.(CD) Peace to you; be very strong!” (CE)

As he spoke to me, I was strengthened and said, “Let my lord speak, for you have strengthened me.”(CF)

20 He said, “Do you know why I’ve come to you? I must return at once to fight against the prince of Persia, and when I leave, the prince of Greece will come.(CG) 21 However, I will tell you what is recorded in the book of truth. (No one has the courage to support me against those princes except Michael,(CH) your prince.

11 In the first year of Darius the Mede,(CI) I stood up to strengthen and protect him.)

1 John 2:18-3:6

The Last Hour

18 Children, it is the last hour.(A) And as you have heard that antichrist(B) is coming, even now many antichrists have come. By this we know that it is the last hour. 19 They went out from us, but they did not belong to us; for if they had belonged to us, they would have remained with us. However, they went out so that it might be made clear that none of them belongs to us.

20 But you have an anointing(C) from the Holy One,(D) and all of you know the truth.[a] 21 I have not written to you because you don’t know the truth, but because you do know it, and because no lie comes from the truth. 22 Who is the liar, if not the one who denies that Jesus is the Christ?(E) This one is the antichrist: the one who denies the Father and the Son. 23 No one who denies the Son has the Father;(F) he who confesses the Son has the Father as well.(G)

Remaining with God

24 What you have heard from the beginning is to remain in you. If what you have heard from the beginning remains in you, then you will remain in the Son(H) and in the Father.(I) 25 And this is the promise that he himself made to us: eternal life.(J)

26 I have written these things to you concerning those who are trying to deceive you. 27 As for you, the anointing you received from him remains in you, and you don’t need anyone to teach you. Instead, his anointing teaches you about all things(K) and is true and is not a lie; just as it has taught you,[b] remain in him.(L)

God’s Children

28 So now, little children, remain in him so that when he appears(M) we may have confidence and not be ashamed before him at his coming.(N) 29 If you know that he is righteous, you know this as well: Everyone who does what is right(O) has been born of him.(P)

See what great love[c] the Father has given us that we should be called God’s children—and we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it didn’t know him. Dear friends, we are God’s children now, and what we will be has not yet been revealed.(Q) We know that when he appears,[d] we will be like him(R) because we will see him as he is.(S) And everyone who has this hope(T) in him purifies himself just as he is pure.(U)

Everyone who commits sin practices lawlessness; and sin is lawlessness. You know that he was revealed so that he might take away sins,[e](V) and there is no sin in him.(W) Everyone who remains in him(X) does not sin;[f](Y) everyone who sins[g] has not seen him or known him.

I lift my eyes toward the mountains.
Where will my help come from?(A)
My help comes from the Lord,

your Protector will not slumber.(C)
Indeed, the Protector of Israel

Daniel 8

The Vision of a Ram and a Goat

In the third year of King Belshazzar’s(A) reign, a vision appeared to me, Daniel, after the one that had appeared to me earlier.(B) I saw the vision, and as I watched, I was in the fortress city of Susa,(C) in the province of Elam.(D) I saw in the vision that I was beside the Ulai Canal. I looked up,[a] and there was a ram(E) standing beside the canal. He had two horns. The two horns were long, but one was longer than the other, and the longer one came up last. I saw the ram charging to the west, the north, and the south.(F) No animal could stand against him, and there was no rescue from his power. He did whatever he wanted(G) and became great.

As I was observing, a male goat appeared, coming from the west across the surface of the entire earth without touching the ground. The goat had a conspicuous horn[b] between his eyes.(H) He came toward the two-horned ram I had seen standing beside the canal and rushed at him with savage fury. I saw him approaching the ram, and infuriated with him, he struck the ram, breaking his two horns, and the ram was not strong enough to stand against him. The goat threw him to the ground and trampled him, and there was no one to rescue the ram from his power. Then the male goat acted even more arrogantly,(I) but when he became powerful, the large horn was broken.(J) Four conspicuous horns came up in its place, pointing toward the four winds of heaven.(K)

The Little Horn

From one of them a little horn(L) emerged and grew extensively toward the south and the east and toward the beautiful land.[c](M) 10 It grew as high as the heavenly army, made some of the army and some of the stars[d] fall to the earth,(N) and trampled them.(O) 11 It acted arrogantly(P) even against the Prince of the heavenly army;(Q) it revoked his regular sacrifice(R) and overthrew the place of his sanctuary. 12 In the rebellion, the army was given up, together with the regular sacrifice. The horn threw truth to the ground and was successful(S) in what it did.

13 Then I heard a holy one speaking,(T) and another holy one said to the speaker, “How long will the events of this vision last(U)—the regular sacrifice, the rebellion that makes desolate, and the giving over of the sanctuary and of the army to be trampled?” (V)

14 He said to me,[e] “For 2,300 evenings and mornings; then the sanctuary will be restored.”

Interpretation of the Vision

15 While I, Daniel, was watching the vision and trying to understand it, there stood before me someone who appeared to be a man.(W) 16 I heard a human voice calling from the middle of the Ulai: “Gabriel,(X) explain the vision to this man.”

17 So he approached where I was standing; when he came near, I was terrified and fell facedown.(Y) “Son of man,” he said to me, “understand that the vision refers to the time of the end.”(Z) 18 While he was speaking to me, I fell into a deep sleep,(AA) with my face to the ground. Then he touched me, made me stand up,(AB) 19 and said, “I am here to tell you what will happen at the conclusion of the time of wrath, because it refers to the appointed time of the end.(AC) 20 The two-horned ram(AD) that you saw represents the kings of Media and Persia. 21 The shaggy goat represents the king of Greece, and the large horn between his eyes represents the first king.[f] 22 The four horns that took the place of the broken horn represent four kingdoms. They will rise from that nation, but without its power.

23 Near the end of their kingdoms,
when the rebels have reached
the full measure of their sin,[g](AE)
a ruthless[h] king, skilled in intrigue,[i]
will come to the throne.
24 His power will be great,
but it will not be his own.
He will cause outrageous destruction(AF)
and succeed in whatever he does.
He will destroy the powerful
along with the holy people.(AG)
25 He will cause deceit to prosper
through his cunning and by his influence,
and in his own mind he will exalt himself.
He will destroy many in a time of peace;
he will even stand against the Prince of princes.
Yet he will be broken—not by human hands.(AH)
26 The vision of the evenings and the mornings
that has been told is true.
Now you are to seal up the vision(AI)
because it refers to many days in the future.”

27 I, Daniel, was overcome and lay sick for days.(AJ) Then I got up and went about the king’s business.(AK) I was greatly disturbed by the vision and could not understand it.

1 John 2:1-17

My little children, I am writing you these things so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate(A) with the Father—Jesus Christ the righteous one. He himself is the atoning sacrifice[a](B) for our sins, and not only for ours, but also for those of the whole world.(C)

God’s Commands

This is how we know(D) that we know him: if we keep his commands.(E) The one who says, “I have come to know him,” and yet doesn’t keep his commands, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. But whoever keeps his word,(F) truly in him the love of God is made complete. This is how we know we are in him:(G) The one who says he remains in him(H) should walk just as he walked.

Dear friends, I am not writing you a new command(I) but an old command that you have had from the beginning. The old command is the word(J) you have heard. Yet I am writing you a new command, which is true in him and in you, because the darkness is passing away(K) and the true light(L) is already shining.(M) The one who says he is in the light but hates his brother or sister(N) is in the darkness until now. 10 The one who loves his brother or sister(O) remains in the light, and there is no cause for stumbling in him.[b] 11 But the one who hates his brother or sister(P) is in the darkness, walks in the darkness,(Q) and doesn’t know where he’s going,(R) because the darkness has blinded his eyes.

Reasons for Writing

12 I am writing to you, little children,
since your sins have been forgiven
on account of his name.(S)
13 I am writing to you, fathers,
because you have come to know
the one who is from the beginning.(T)
I am writing to you, young men,
because you have conquered the evil one.(U)
14 I have written to you, children,
because you have come to know the Father.
I have written to you, fathers,
because you have come to know
the one who is from the beginning.
I have written to you, young men,
because you are strong,
God’s word(V) remains in you,
and you have conquered the evil one.

A Warning about the World

15 Do not love the world(W) or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh,(X) the lust of the eyes,(Y) and the pride(Z) in one’s possessions—is not from the Father, but is from the world. 17 And the world with its lust is passing away,(AA) but the one who does the will of God(AB) remains forever.(AC)

A Cry for Truth and Peace

A song of ascents.

In my distress I called to the Lord,
and he answered me.(A)
Lord, rescue me from lying lips
and a deceitful tongue.”(B)

What will he give you,
and what will he do to you,
you deceitful tongue?(C)
A warrior’s sharp arrows
with burning charcoal![a](D)

What misery that I have stayed in Meshech,[b](E)
that I have lived among the tents of Kedar![c](F)

I am for peace; but when I speak,
they are for war.(H)
