Ecclesiastes 4:1-6:12, 2 Corinthians 6:14-7:7, Psalms 47:1-9, Proverbs 22:16

Today is the 3rd day of September welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I am Brian it is great to be here with you as we greet the close of another one of our weeks. So, we’re closing a week and we’re just getting started and moved into this brand-new month. So well have to wait until next week for the first full week of this month of September but this is where we are, and this is how the days fall and its wonderful. No matter what day it is, no matter where we are in the month, it is wonderful to be around the Global Campfire together with you as we take the next step forward. And that next step leads us back into the book of Ecclesiastes. And we talked quite a bit about Ecclesiastes yesterday, that it is a part of the grouping of wisdom literature in the Bible and that it gives this really unique perspective from a person who has had no limits, no limits to their resource, no limits to their desire, no limits to their ambition and has done it all. And what you do if you’ve done it all and you can’t think of anything left to do but you are now older and your life reflecting back? And of course, this isn’t all there is to Ecclesiastes but this gives us sort of a birds eye view of what we’re moving through as we continue our journey. And, so, let’s dive in. We’ve been reading from the English Standard Version this week, which is what we’ll do today. Ecclesiastes chapter 4, 5, and 6.

Prayer:

Father, we thank You for Your word. We thank You for this brand-new month. It’s flying by. But as we mark the days and mark the time it allows us to stay present in where we are and what You are doing in our lives. We are grateful for the territory that we are moving through in the Bible and we recognize now that we moved through several different kinds of territory that we see that it speaks to us in different ways, touches us in different ways, transforms us and invites us deeper. We are grateful and we are looking forward to all that You have to impart, all that You have to teach us in the Scriptures in this month. So, come Holy Spirit. We seal this week. We release it to You. It will become part of our past. It will become history and we will look forward to all that is laying in store for us as we live our days in community and walk in this life of faith with You. Come Holy Spirit we pray. In the name of Jesus we ask. Amen.

Ecclesiastes 4-6

Evil Under the Sun

(A)Again I (B)saw all (C)the oppressions that are done under the sun. And behold, the tears of the oppressed, and they had (D)no one to comfort them! On the side of their oppressors there was power, and there was no one to comfort them. And I (E)thought the dead who are already dead more fortunate than the living who are still alive. But (F)better than both is he who has not yet been and has not seen the evil deeds that are done under the sun.

Then I saw that all toil and all skill in work come from a man's envy of his neighbor. This also is (G)vanity[a] and a striving after wind.

The fool (H)folds his hands and (I)eats his own flesh.

(J)Better is a handful of (K)quietness than two hands full of toil and a striving after wind.

(L)Again, I saw vanity under the sun: one person who has no other, either son or brother, yet there is no end to all his toil, and his (M)eyes are never satisfied with riches, so that he never asks, (N)“For whom am I toiling and depriving myself of pleasure?” This also is vanity and an unhappy (O)business.

Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their toil. 10 For if they fall, one will lift up his fellow. But woe to him who is alone when he falls and has not another to lift him up! 11 Again, if two lie together, they keep warm, (P)but how can one keep warm alone? 12 And though a man might prevail against one who is alone, two will withstand him—a threefold cord is not quickly broken.

13 Better was (Q)a poor and wise youth than an old and foolish king who no longer knew how (R)to take advice. 14 For he went (S)from prison to the throne, though in his own kingdom he had been born poor. 15 I saw all the living who move about under the sun, along with that[b] youth who was to stand in the king's[c] place. 16 There was no end of all the people, all of whom he led. Yet those who come later will not rejoice in him. Surely this also is (T)vanity and a striving after wind.

Fear God

[d] (U)Guard your steps when you go to (V)the house of God. To draw near to listen is better than to (W)offer the sacrifice of fools, for they do not know that they are doing evil. [e] Be not rash with your mouth, nor let your heart be hasty to utter a word before God, for God is in heaven and you are on earth. Therefore (X)let your words be few. For a dream comes with much business, and a fool's voice with (Y)many words.

When (Z)you vow a vow to God, (AA)do not delay paying it, for he has no pleasure in fools. (AB)Pay what you vow. (AC)It is better that you should not vow than that you should vow and not pay. Let not your mouth lead you[f] into sin, and do not say before (AD)the messenger[g] that it was (AE)a mistake. Why should God be angry at your voice and destroy the work of your hands? For when dreams increase and words grow many, there is vanity;[h] but[i] (AF)God is the one you must fear.

The Vanity of Wealth and Honor

(AG)If you see in a province the oppression of the poor and the violation of justice and righteousness, (AH)do not be amazed at the matter, (AI)for the high official is watched by a higher, and there are yet higher ones over them. But this is gain for a land in every way: a king committed to cultivated fields.[j]

10 He who loves money will not be satisfied with money, nor he who loves wealth with his income; this also is vanity. 11 When goods increase, they increase who eat them, and what advantage has their owner but to see them with his eyes? 12 Sweet is the sleep of a laborer, whether he eats little or much, but the full stomach of the rich will not let him sleep.

13 (AJ)There is a grievous evil that I have seen under the sun: riches were kept by their owner to his hurt, 14 and those riches were lost in a bad venture. And he is father of a son, but he has nothing in his hand. 15 (AK)As he came from his mother's womb he shall go again, naked as he came, and shall take nothing for his toil that he may carry away in his hand. 16 This also is a grievous evil: just as he came, so shall he go, and what (AL)gain is there to him who (AM)toils for the wind? 17 Moreover, all his days he (AN)eats in darkness in much vexation and sickness and anger.

18 Behold, what I have seen to be (AO)good and fitting is to eat and drink and find enjoyment[k] in all the toil with which one toils under the sun the few days of his life that God has given him, for this is his (AP)lot. 19 Everyone also to whom (AQ)God has given (AR)wealth and possessions (AS)and power to enjoy them, and to accept his lot and rejoice in his toil—this is (AT)the gift of God. 20 For he will not much remember the days of his life because God keeps him occupied with joy in his heart.

(AU)There is an evil that I have seen under the sun, and it lies heavy on mankind: a man (AV)to whom (AW)God gives wealth, possessions, and honor, so that he (AX)lacks nothing of all that he desires, yet God (AY)does not give him power to enjoy them, but a stranger enjoys them. This is vanity;[l] it is a grievous evil. If a man fathers a hundred children and lives many years, so that (AZ)the days of his years are many, but his soul is not satisfied with life's (BA)good things, and he also has no (BB)burial, I say that (BC)a stillborn child is better off than he. For it comes in vanity and goes in darkness, and in darkness its name is covered. Moreover, it has not (BD)seen the sun or known anything, yet it finds (BE)rest rather than he. Even though he should live a thousand years twice over, yet enjoy[m] no good—do not all go to the one place?

(BF)All the toil of man is for his mouth, yet his appetite is not satisfied.[n] For what advantage has the wise man (BG)over the fool? And what does the poor man have who knows how to conduct himself before the living? Better (BH)is the sight of the eyes than the wandering of the appetite: this also is (BI)vanity and a striving after wind.

10 Whatever has come to be has (BJ)already been named, and it is known what man is, and that he is not able to (BK)dispute with one stronger than he. 11 The more words, the more vanity, and what is the advantage to man? 12 For who knows what is good for man while he lives the few days of his (BL)vain[o] life, which he passes like (BM)a shadow? For who can tell man what will be (BN)after him under the sun?

2 Corinthians 6:14-7:7

The Temple of the Living God

14 (A)Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers. For (B)what partnership has righteousness with lawlessness? Or (C)what fellowship has light with darkness? 15 (D)What accord has Christ with Belial?[a] Or what portion does a believer share with an unbeliever? 16 What agreement has the temple of God with idols? For (E)we are the temple of the living God; as God said,

(F)“I will make my dwelling among them and (G)walk among them,
and (H)I will be their God,
and they shall be my people.
17 Therefore (I)go out from their midst,
and be separate from them, says the Lord,
and touch no unclean thing;
then I will welcome you,
18 (J)and I will be a father to you,
and you shall be sons and daughters to me,
says the Lord Almighty.”

Since we have these promises, beloved, (K)let us cleanse ourselves from every defilement of body[b] and spirit, bringing holiness to completion in the fear of God.

Paul's Joy

(L)Make room in your hearts[c] for us. (M)We have wronged no one, we have corrupted no one, we have taken advantage of no one. I do not say this to condemn you, for I said before that (N)you are in our hearts, to die together and to live together. I am acting with (O)great boldness toward you; (P)I have great pride in you; (Q)I am filled with comfort. In all our affliction, I am overflowing with joy.

For even (R)when we came into Macedonia, our bodies had no rest, but we were afflicted at every turn—(S)fighting without and fear within. But (T)God, who comforts the downcast, (U)comforted us by the coming of Titus, and not only by his coming but also by the comfort with which he was comforted by you, as he told us of your longing, your mourning, your zeal for me, so that I rejoiced still more.

Psalm 47

God Is King over All the Earth

To the choirmaster. A Psalm of (A)the Sons of Korah.

47 (B)Clap your hands, all peoples!
(C)Shout to God with loud songs of joy!
For the Lord, the Most High, (D)is to be feared,
(E)a great king over all the earth.
He (F)subdued peoples under us,
and nations under our feet.
He chose our (G)heritage for us,
(H)the pride of Jacob whom he loves. Selah

God (I)has gone up with a shout,
the Lord with the sound of a trumpet.
Sing praises to God, sing praises!
Sing praises to our King, sing praises!
For God is (J)the King of all the earth;
sing praises (K)with a psalm![a]

God (L)reigns over the nations;
God sits on his holy throne.
(M)The princes of the peoples gather
as the people of the God of Abraham.
For (N)the shields of the earth belong to God;
he is highly exalted!

Ecclesiastes 1:1-3:22, 2 Corinthians 6:1-13, Psalm 46:1-11, Proverbs 22:15

Today is the second day of September, welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I am Brian and it is wonderful to be here with you, as we continue moving into this brand-new month in front of us. And this brand-new month has brought us to a brand-new book.

Introduction to the Book of Ecclesiastes:

So, yesterday we concluded the book of Job, which brings us to the threshold and we will begin today, the book of Ecclesiastes. And just by way of reminders, both Job and Ecclesiastes, as well as Proverbs and Song of Solomon, some of the Psalms, these are a part of a grouping of books known as wisdom literature. This is the genre that they are written in. So, as strange as it’s going to seem as we begin the book of Ecclesiastes that we are studying wisdom, to think about the ways that we define things. In some cases, we could say that is wisdom and we would be making a definition. We could also say that is not wisdom and therefore make a definition of wisdom by it not being something. Or for that matter, even with the Lord. We could say God is like and then make some sort of metaphor description that says more than just a definition. Or you could say God is not like and then make a definition by subtraction. So, not like to get this all muddy and convoluted but like with wisdom, we could say all the things that wisdom are and it be true. We could also say everything that wisdom is not and it still be true, in defining what wisdom is. In Ecclesiastes, we have a little bit of that going on. And by the way, the…the sort of affirming what something is or defining it by what it is not, this is called apophatic and cataphatic ways of looking at things. The apophatic way being sort of the subtraction, the negation. Saying that something is not like this other thing. In many ways we have this kind of view in the book of Ecclesiastes, it’s just interwoven into a life. In this case, the life of Israel’s third King, King Solomon. And it should be said, that there are raging debates among scholars and have been for a long time about who wrote the book of Ecclesiastes. It is generally attributed to King Solomon. This has been debated for a very long time. I personally like to read it as if it’s from Solomon or about Solomon because it kind of book ends his life. We see Solomon arising to the throne of Israel and his humility before God and asking for wisdom and his rise to power and his unbelievable development of the land of Israel. The Bible speaks of him as the wisest man in the world his wisdom is still famous today. But we also know from the Scriptures that the latter years of his reign, he did not finish well. He was seduced away into complete idolatry. So, it’s easy to wonder like, what happened to this guy, things were going so swimmingly, it was perfect, he brought Israel to climax in their culture like, what happened? Well, we could say, well he was seduced away by his many, many wives. But maybe it’s even deeper than that. Solomon’s known to be the wisest man in the world. So, he should see through some of this stuff, we would think. He was powerful, he was a king, he had the power of life and death in his hands. He was wealthy, one of the most wealthy people in the world at that time. So, what we’re looking at, is a person that has peace all around him provided by his father, King David. He has all of the resources his heart could desire. He has anything that he wants, like nothing, pretty much, nothing is off-limits to him. So, in some ways, Ecclesiastes is almost a dark memoir, a look back at what has been accomplished and realizing its chasing the wind, it’s meaningless. Like, if we had the memoir of Solomon, we would think it would be full of his greatness, his epic greatness and the greatness that Israel achieved during his time. Ecclesiastes reads a little more depressing than that, and in some ways, it just looks hopeless and like he’s just a, just a rant. But if we’ll look below the surface, we’ll find that he’s not really saying things that we haven’t thought or that we don’t say ourselves, especially when we’re feeling hopeless. It’s just, everybody has goals and dreams, everybody pursues things, everybody achieves things, but not very many people in the world, there are people in the world, but not very many people in the world, have the resource and the energy to do whatever they want. Like, they can do whatever they want, whenever they want pretty much. We, most of us, on the other hand have to work really hard to achieve certain things and it’s much less than the people who have unlimited resources. And then we start thinking, through comparison, if I could just have that, my life would be complete. If I had the ability to do whatever I want, whenever I want, I would be overjoyed and full of happiness. It would be amazing. But what we read from the book of Ecclesiastes is…is the perspective of a person who has had every advantage, every resource, everything, he’s the king of Israel. He has developed the land; he has lots and lots of gold. He has lots and lots of glory. He has lots and lots of girls. Like, he has everything that he desires. And so, to have this person live their life and then kind of reflect back and be honest about the experience, that’s helpful because most of us aren’t going to achieve that, but we spend our entire lives in pursuit of it. So, what we ultimately find from the teacher in Ecclesiastes is that you can gain the whole world and lose your soul, that you can have everything and still be empty inside, that you can achieve whatever you set your hands to do, and it’s still not be enough. It’s meaningless without God. A human being, no matter their wealth or power cannot make meaning that lasts, there are voids within us that no matter what we try to cram into those holes in our lives and fill them with, it doesn’t last. We can run and chase life as hard as we can and realize that we’re creating experiences, but life is lived in relationship with God. We were made this way, He is the source, the true source of life. And so, Ecclesiastes gives is this rare view, and we’ll start reading this book and if you’ve never read Ecclesiastes before, it can be like what is, this is the Bible? This is in the Bible? And the answer is, of course it is. We all feel this way, we just don’t usually have an example like a person who has every resource and every strength and every power available to them. So, it gives us a perspective on what it might look like if we actually got everything that we claim that we want. And so, with that we begin Ecclesiastes 1, 2, and 3 today.

Prayer:

Father, we love You, we thank You for Your word. We thank You for this new territory that we are entering into, as we move into the book of Ecclesiastes, it feels so different than so many of the other portions of Scripture. And it’s intriguing to consider what wisdom looks like if you’ve tried everything and done it all. Very, very few of us, have those experiences in our lives and yet You are giving us the wisdom from it, because almost all of us pursue any kind of comfort we can get our hands on. And so often, we are ignoring You, the comforter. So, may we learn the deep wisdom from the book of Ecclesiastes. We pray in the name of Jesus, we ask. Amen.

Prayer and Encouragements:

Good morning, it’s Graced Filled Decastro here. It’s the 30th of August and I am just here listening; I’ve just finished listening to Kingdom Seeker Daniel. His testimony about his bride returning home. Oh, my goodness, praise God, hallelujah. I am so thankful and grateful to God for this restoration. I was thinking about you guys this morning, whilst I was listening to Brian. You were very heavily on my mind. And so, when I heard your voice towards the ending of the prayers that were coming through, I was just like, you know, oh my Gosh, please tell me this is what I want to hear, this is what I want to hear. And yes, you did. So, I am celebrating with you, my brother. And also, happy, happy, happy birthday. This truly has been a blessed birthday for you and God is good, He is merciful, He is kind and He, He does answer our prayers. He really does. I just wanna send a shout to Brian and family, thank you for doing what you do. This is such an amazing platform and I feel so grateful every single morning, that I’m blessed to open my eyes and listen to the DAB, the prayer requests, the testimonies, they’re amazing. I’m running out of time now guys. Have a wonderful, blessed day. Take care. Love you. Bye Bye.

Hello Daily Audio Bible, this is David from Houston, Texas. I’m calling today because I would like to request prayers for myself. On the 28th of August I decided to re-dedicate my life to Jesus. And I don’t know if this has been like the 10th time over in my, almost 40 years of living, that I’ve gone through this part. And somehow, I always fall back into sin, and I get away from the Lord. But I’m praying this time around that you know, and I’m seeking prayers from the community, this time around, I have to change position this time in my life. And I’m going to pursue Jesus like I’ve never before. And this will be the final time in my life, where I have to go through a re-dedication process. This time that I stick with Jesus. Thank you.

Hey Daily Audio Bible family, this is Billy from Montgomery with A Trinity Stone. I wanted to put a prayer request out there for Margo from Liberia, West Africa. Margo I just want to let you know that was a tragic, tragic thing that happened to the four-year-old child. Absolute travesty. I really don’t even know what to say other than we’re gonna keep you covered in prayer. Because I think you do need to finish your work over there, sounds like it’s very important. But it’s just a travesty, total tragic, tragic thing that happened. We just want to let you know we’re keeping you covered up in prayer over here. And want to let you know we’re washing you with the blood of Jesus. That’s all we can do over here is just a tragic, tragic thing that happened. And that is it. I just wanted to let you know that Margo. And we love you. And love to all you guys too, out there in DAB land. I will talk to you guys later. Bye

Hi DAB family, this is Natalie from North Carolina. I found the DAB community last year, January 1st. And almost finished out the year but life got a little crazy and I fell off the wagon a little bit. I actually, just recently started listening to this year’s series. I am coming to you all for prayers. It’s been a little tough lately. My husband travels for work. I have two little ones at home. And I work full time. We don’t really have any family or friends that I can rely on nearby. And I’ve just been feeling very overwhelmed a little lonely. So, I just was hoping to come to ya’ll for some prayers. And I just thank you all for this amazing community. It always helps, listening to Brian every day. And I look forward to it. Thank you.

Hello Daily Audio Bible family. I am calling in response to a prayer request that was sent in on the August 31st reading by, he said his name was Anonymous. He said his wife had symptoms of long COVID and that she was stuck in the house. And she can’t drive because of those symptoms. And that he was having a tough time separating himself from the world. I just wanted to just encourage you. I don’t quite understand, you know, quite understand the symptoms of long COVID but I know the feeling of being stuck inside and losing joy. And so, Lord, I just pray right now for his wife, Lord God, that You will just come into that home right now and just give her peace and joy, Lord Jesus. Restore to her the joy of her salvation, Lord God. And I thank You for healing every symptom that she has, Lord Jesus, and that no symptoms will remain, Lord God. That all these doctor appointments she won’t have to go to anymore because You are going to touch her body and make her whole and healed, in Jesus’s name. And Lord, I pray for him as well, Lord, we all waiver through the back and forth between the world and following You, Lord Jesus. Nobody is above that, Lord God. And Lord, I pray right now to just give him strength and direction, Lord Jesus, that he is not alone in this walk, Lord God, but he always has somebody to reach out to and that is You and the Daily Audio Bible family. So, Lord, I pray right now to just give them both strength, peace and joy, Lord God, and restore the love that they have for each other, Lord Jesus. Lord, we know that You’re in the miracle working business, and nothing is too hard for You, Lord Jesus. So, now we consider it done and in Jesus’s name. I hope everything is good and I can’t wait to hear for an update.

Hey everybody, it’s Margo in Liberia. And I just want to say such a heartfelt thank you to everyone that has been praying for me. Those of you that have called in and those that haven’t. I have felt many prayers. And I’m so grateful to know that I’m not alone in this. The day I called in I just, you know, I felt like I might never feel okay again. You know that grief where you just feel like you can’t even breath. And I heard your prayers, those of you that called in, and it’s amazing how comforting it is to know that someone else feels pain alongside you. Somebody that doesn’t even know you. And I’m just so grateful for this family. And I have felt your prayers. I feel as though the shock is just finally wearing off and that’s such a relief. The grief continues but at least that shock is wearing off. The little girl’s name was Winnie. I just want to share that, and she was a little darling, such a little darling. Little Winnie. Thank you for thinking of her, thank you that she meant something to you, even though you never met her. Thank you that you agree with me that this death is unjust and unfair. Thank you for being my brothers and sisters in walking beside me in this. I’m really, really grateful. Okay, bye for now.

The Daily Audio Bible Reading for Friday September 2, 2022 (NIV)

Ecclesiastes 1-3

All Is Vanity

The words of (A)the Preacher,[a] the son of David, (B)king in Jerusalem.

(C)Vanity[b] of vanities, says (D)the Preacher,
(E)vanity of vanities! (F)All is vanity.
(G)What (H)does man gain by all the toil
at which he toils under the sun?
A generation goes, and a generation comes,
but (I)the earth remains forever.
(J)The sun rises, and the sun goes down,
and hastens[c] to the place where it rises.
(K)The wind blows to the south
and goes around to the north;
around and around goes the wind,
and on its circuits the wind returns.
All (L)streams run to the sea,
but the sea is not full;
to the place where the streams flow,
there they flow again.
All things are full of weariness;
a man cannot utter it;
(M)the eye is not satisfied with seeing,
nor the ear filled with hearing.
(N)What has been is what will be,
and what has been done is what will be done,
and there is nothing new under the sun.
10 Is there a thing of which it is said,
“See, this is new”?
It has been (O)already
in the ages before us.
11 There is no (P)remembrance of former things,[d]
nor will there be any remembrance
of later things[e] yet to be
among those who come after.

The Vanity of Wisdom

12 I (Q)the Preacher have been king over Israel in Jerusalem. 13 And I (R)applied my heart[f] to seek and to search out by wisdom all that is done under heaven. It is an unhappy (S)business that God has given to the children of man to be busy with. 14 I have seen everything that is done under the sun, and behold, all is (T)vanity[g] and a striving after wind.[h]

15 (U)What is crooked cannot be made straight,
and what is lacking cannot be counted.

16 I said in my heart, “I have acquired great (V)wisdom, surpassing all who were over Jerusalem before me, and my heart has had great experience of wisdom and knowledge.” 17 And I (W)applied my heart to know wisdom and to know (X)madness and folly. I perceived that this also is but (Y)a striving after wind.

18 For (Z)in much wisdom is much vexation,
and he who increases knowledge increases sorrow.

The Vanity of Self-Indulgence

I (AA)said in my heart, “Come now, I will test you with pleasure; enjoy yourself.” But behold, this also was vanity.[i] I (AB)said of laughter, “It is mad,” and of pleasure, “What use is it?” I (AC)searched with my heart how to cheer my body with wine—my heart still guiding me with wisdom—and how to lay hold on (AD)folly, till I might see what was good for the children of man to do under heaven during the few days of their life. I made great works. I (AE)built houses and planted (AF)vineyards for myself. I made myself (AG)gardens and parks, and planted in them all kinds of fruit trees. I made myself pools from which to water the forest of growing trees. I bought male and female slaves, and had (AH)slaves who were born in my house. I had also great possessions of (AI)herds and flocks, more than any who had been before me in Jerusalem. I also gathered for myself silver and (AJ)gold and the treasure of (AK)kings and (AL)provinces. I got (AM)singers, both men and women, and many (AN)concubines,[j] the delight of the sons of man.

So I became great and (AO)surpassed all who were before me in Jerusalem. Also my (AP)wisdom remained with me. 10 And whatever my eyes desired I did not keep from them. I kept my heart from no pleasure, for my heart (AQ)found pleasure in all my toil, and this was my (AR)reward for all my toil. 11 Then I considered all that my hands had done and the toil I had expended in doing it, and behold, all was (AS)vanity and a striving after wind, and there was nothing (AT)to be gained under the sun.

The Vanity of Living Wisely

12 (AU)So I turned to consider (AV)wisdom and madness and folly. For what can the man do who comes after the king? Only (AW)what has already been done. 13 Then I saw that there is more gain in wisdom than in folly, as there is more gain in light than in darkness. 14 (AX)The wise person has his eyes in his head, but the fool walks in darkness. And yet I perceived that the (AY)same event happens to all of them. 15 Then I said in my heart, (AZ)“What happens to the fool will happen to me also. Why then have I been so very wise?” And I said in my heart that this also is vanity. 16 For of the wise as of the fool there is (BA)no enduring remembrance, seeing that in the days to come all will have been long forgotten. (BB)How the wise dies just like the fool! 17 So I hated life, because what is done under the sun was grievous to me, for (BC)all is vanity and a striving after wind.

The Vanity of Toil

18 I hated (BD)all my toil in which I toil under the sun, seeing that I must (BE)leave it to the man who will come after me, 19 and who knows whether he will be wise or a fool? Yet he will be master of all for which I toiled and used my wisdom under the sun. This also is vanity. 20 So I (BF)turned about and gave my heart up to despair (BG)over all the toil of my labors under the sun, 21 because sometimes a person who has toiled with wisdom and knowledge and skill must leave everything to be enjoyed by someone who did not toil for it. This also is vanity and a great evil. 22 What has a man from (BH)all the toil and striving of heart with which he toils beneath the sun? 23 For (BI)all his days are full of sorrow, and his (BJ)work is a vexation. Even in the night his heart does not rest. This also is vanity.

24 (BK)There is nothing better for a person than that he should (BL)eat and drink and find enjoyment[k] in his toil. This also, I saw, is (BM)from the hand of God, 25 for apart from him[l] who can eat or who can have enjoyment? 26 For to the one who pleases him (BN)God has given wisdom and knowledge and joy, but to the sinner he has given (BO)the business of gathering and collecting, (BP)only to give to one who pleases God. (BQ)This also is vanity and a striving after wind.

A Time for Everything

For everything there is a season, and (BR)a time for every matter under heaven:

a time to be born, and a time to (BS)die;
a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted;
a time to kill, and a time to heal;
a time to break down, and a time to build up;
a time to (BT)weep, and a time to laugh;
a time to mourn, and a time to (BU)dance;
a time to (BV)cast away stones, and a time to (BW)gather stones together;
a time to embrace, and a time to (BX)refrain from embracing;
a time to seek, and a time to (BY)lose;
a time to keep, and a time to (BZ)cast away;
a time to (CA)tear, and a time to sew;
a time to (CB)keep silence, and a time to speak;
a time to love, and a time to (CC)hate;
a time for war, and a time for peace.

The God-Given Task

What (CD)gain has the worker from his toil? 10 I have seen (CE)the business that (CF)God has given to the children of man to be busy with. 11 He has (CG)made everything beautiful in its time. Also, he has put eternity into man's heart, yet so that he cannot (CH)find out what God has done from the beginning to the end. 12 I perceived that there is (CI)nothing better for them than to be joyful and to (CJ)do good as long as they live; 13 also (CK)that everyone should eat and drink and take pleasure in all his toil—this is (CL)God's gift to man.

14 I perceived that whatever God does endures forever; (CM)nothing can be added to it, nor anything taken from it. God has done it, so that people fear before him. 15 That which is, (CN)already has been; that which is to be, already has been; and God (CO)seeks what has been driven away.[m]

From Dust to Dust

16 Moreover, (CP)I saw under the sun that in the place of justice, even (CQ)there was wickedness, and in the place of righteousness, even there was wickedness. 17 I said in my heart, (CR)God will judge the righteous and the wicked, for there is (CS)a time for every matter and for every work. 18 I said in my heart with regard to the children of man that God is testing them that they may see that they themselves are but (CT)beasts. 19 (CU)For what happens to the children of man and what happens to the beasts is the same; as one dies, so dies the other. They all have the same breath, and man has no advantage over the beasts, for all is vanity.[n] 20 All go to one place. All are from (CV)the dust, and to dust all return. 21 Who knows whether (CW)the spirit of man goes upward and the spirit of the beast goes down into the earth? 22 So I saw that there is (CX)nothing better than that a man should rejoice in his work, for (CY)that is his lot. Who can bring him to see (CZ)what will be after him?

2 Corinthians 6:1-13

(A)Working together with him, then, (B)we appeal to you (C)not to receive the grace of God in vain. For he says,

(D)“In a favorable time I listened to you,
and in a day of salvation I have helped you.”

Behold, (E)now is the (F)favorable time; behold, now is the day of salvation. We (G)put no obstacle in anyone's way, so that no fault may be found with our ministry, but (H)as servants of God we commend ourselves in every way: (I)by great endurance, (J)in afflictions, (K)hardships, calamities, (L)beatings, imprisonments, (M)riots, labors, sleepless nights, hunger; (N)by purity, (O)knowledge, patience, kindness, (P)the Holy Spirit, (Q)genuine love; by (R)truthful speech, and (S)the power of God; with (T)the weapons of righteousness for the right hand and for the left; through honor and dishonor, (U)through slander and praise. We are treated as impostors, and yet are true; as unknown, and (V)yet well known; (W)as dying, and behold, we live; (X)as punished, and yet not killed; 10 (Y)as sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; (Z)as poor, yet making many rich; (AA)as having nothing, (AB)yet possessing everything.

11 We have spoken freely to you,[a] Corinthians; (AC)our heart is wide open. 12 You are not restricted by us, but (AD)you are restricted in your own affections. 13 (AE)In return (I speak (AF)as to children) widen your hearts also.

Psalm 46

God Is Our Fortress

To the choirmaster. Of (A)the Sons of Korah. According to (B)Alamoth.[a] A Song.

46 God is our (C)refuge and strength,
a very (D)present[b] help in (E)trouble.
Therefore we will not fear (F)though the earth gives way,
though the mountains be moved into (G)the heart of the sea,
though (H)its waters roar and foam,
though the mountains tremble at its swelling. Selah

There is (I)a river whose streams make glad (J)the city of God,
the holy (K)habitation of the Most High.
(L)God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved;
God will help her when morning dawns.
(M)The nations rage, the kingdoms totter;
he (N)utters his voice, the earth (O)melts.
(P)The Lord of hosts is with us;
the God of Jacob is our fortress. Selah

(Q)Come, behold the works of the Lord,
how he has brought desolations on the earth.
(R)He makes wars cease to the end of the earth;
he (S)breaks the bow and shatters the spear;
(T)he burns the chariots with fire.
10 (U)“Be still, and know that I am God.
(V)I will be exalted among the nations,
I will be exalted in the earth!”
11 (W)The Lord of hosts is with us;
the God of Jacob is our fortress. Selah

Job 40:1-42:17, 2 Corinthians 5:11-21, Psalms 45:1-17, Proverbs 22:14

Today is the 1st day of the month of September welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I am Brian it is wonderful to be here with you as we greet the 9th month of the year. I literally never get to this point in the year where I’m not like, what, how did we get here? It just feels so recent that we came into the new year. But here we are, and this is the 9th month, so we’ve been at this for a while every day now. I suppose if we look at this in terms of like having a baby. If that all began on the first we would be on the home stretch. So, day by day step-by-step has brought us here. And as we move into this brand-new month, we will be bringing to a close the book that we are in in the Old Testament, the book of Job. We will conclude the book of Job today and then move into this month further, by beginning a new book tomorrow. In the book of Job…well…we kinda…we kinda understand the lay of the land. We’ve been reading this the last several days. We know Job has had a lot of tragedy. He’s had unspeakable tragedy to be specific. And he’s been very discouraged and depressed and mourning as one could imagine. His friends have come to comfort him. That’s turned into a big argument over whether or not Job’s claims of innocence could possibly be true. Job fights with his friends but what he wants isn’t to argue with his friends. He wants to find God and present his case. And, so, in yesterday’s reading God shows up and asks a bunch of unanswerable questions. And, so, as we approach the conclusion of the book of Job, Job finally gets to present his case, like he finally has an audience with God and now we can say what he needs to say. And, so, let’s dive in and find out what Job has to say. We’re reading from the English Standard Version this week. Job 40, 41, and 42.

Commentary:

Okay. So, as we begin this brand-new shiny sparkly month, we have also concluded the book of Job, and we learned what happened to Job and then we got into the bulk of the book which is conversations back and forth between Job and his friend. And what they’re arguing about is what God is like. And they shared all that they thought that they knew about what God was like. And Job shared all that he knew about what he thought God was like. And then they were like, no He’s not like that. He’s like this. And they argue it back and forth. Job eventually becomes exasperated. He doesn’t want their wisdom. He knows their wisdom. At least that’s how he feels. He feels like he knows what they know. And they’re like regurgitating things he already knows but they’re not really telling them some…something that he doesn’t know and…and…and he’s frustrated because what he wants is to present his case before God directly and hear from God directly what he did wrong. And then God comes and God has plenty of questions of His own. “Brace yourself like a man”, He tells Job, and He asks unanswerable questions. So, Job had a case prepared. He knew what he would say, and how he would frame what he was saying before the Almighty God. And then he got his chance to say what he needed to say, and the conversation is totally different than what we were expecting. To hear Job tell it to his friends he’s got this whole thing prepared, but then he gets the audience with God, and those things don’t seem to need to be said anymore because Job puts his hand over his mouth. He says, “I had only heard about you before, but now I’m seeing you and I don’t have anything to say. I’m going to put my hand over my mouth and keep my mouth closed.” Here’s the interesting thing about that though. While Job is going through everything, suffering, agonizing, arguing, insulting, being insulted, as he’s going through all of this stuff with his friends, he’s certain about what he wants to say to God. He’s telling his friends what he wants to say to God, then he gets into the presence of God and all of that becomes unnecessary. And as we’ve said before, like it’s very unlikely that any of us have had a season of suffering that looks like Job’s, but everybody faces hardship. Everybody has times of suffering, and everybody has questions. And so often when we’re in a disrupted state and we’re facing hardship we’re crying out to God with the expectation that it…it just needs to all go away. What if it doesn’t? What if there’s more going on than we even fathom? It’s interesting how we are as people because we expect a quick fix. In fact, our entire culture has indoctrinated us that we deserve a quick fix, or we can buy a quick fix. But what happens to us if we don’t get what we want, we don’t get the quick fix? Usually, we start to wonder about God. Is He really good? Can He really be trusted? And we realize we’re on the verge of making a judgment about what God is like similar to Job and his friends. But God isn’t like a human little buddy. God is like a friend, but God is the most-high. There is no one, there is no being at all, anywhere, known or unknown higher than the Creator of it all, the most-high God. And if we find ourselves kind of kicking and screaming like a toddler not getting its way and we’re questioning all kinds of things about what God is like and who we is then we’re making judgments and assumptions about a being that is so beyond us that we…if we’ve scratched the surface it’s barely. Like it…it’s going to take forever. And thankfully we have forever. But like we’re just getting started and we think we know so much. And we do, but at the same time there’s so much more to know. When we are in a position, we’re making assumptions or judgments against God we don’t know what we’re talking about. And if we were in God’s presence with those very very same accusations or judgments, we probably very likely would be clapping our hands over our mouths and saying, I’m not gonna say anything else. I’ve said too much already. But how would we learn more? How would we get more context? It would be like any relationship, right? We would spend time in one another’s presence. What Job found is that in the presence of God questions didn’t matter and that is a lesson each of us can experience. As for our assumptions and subtle judgments against God’s goodness or his heart toward us, that’s not something that we really ought to be doing because that’s making an accusation. And there is an accuser in the story of Job, the Satan who as the Scriptures tell us is the accuser of the brethren. Do we want to be the accuser of God? Which is not to say that God can’t handle us pouring out our hearts to Him. And it’s not that He can’t handle a question. a little question like, why? Then we have to start thinking, am I my just after answers here or am I after God? Job thought he had an awful lot to unpack before the Lord to prove himself right. In the presence of God none of it mattered. And, so, when we find ourselves in times of hardship if we enter into the presence of God, we may discover there is a vastly bigger story than we were aware of. And walking with God in His presence is the only safe place to be.

Prayer:

Father, we love You. We love You and we worship You. You are glorious. You are vastly beyond description and yet You have called us Your children. Forgive us when we have hearts of accusation and judgments toward You because we don’t understand. May we learn to come into Your presence humbly and quietly and simply receive Your comfort knowing that You are the most-high God. You know what’s going on when we don’t, which is an awful lot of the time. In Your presence everything is different. And, so, Holy Spirit, help us to become aware of Your presence all around us all the time. We pray this in the name of Jesus. Amen.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Good morning family this is Bridget from New York City. It is Saturday August 27th and I…I’m sorry Sunday August 28 and I just listened to Saturday’s message, August 27th and I heard the prayer request from Nathan. Nathan, thank you. The phone call that you got to be able to call out, you know, you chose to call DAB and I just think that’s just beautiful. You know, you’re call reminded me of when my husband was incarcerated for five years, and I was out in the world, and I was pretty much nuts. And I believe with all my heart that his prayers while he was in prison are what kept me and my kids. So, I just wanna give it back and encourage you, God is a God of reconciliation, and you keep pressing in and you keep praying. And Lord I just lift up Nathan’s father to You Lord God. Your word says that God You are the healer, You are the restorer God, and You already restored that relationship so how hard would it be for You to restore the other relationships he’s asking about Father? And I just ask You that by Your Holy Spirit Lord You would touch his children’s mother God, that You would save her if she does not know You, if she does know You God that You would bring her conviction Father, that his children and him would be restored Father God, that he would be able to see them and hug them Lord God and be able to have relationship even if it’s a paper relationship Father God, even if it’s a once a year visit God, that You would make away for this family to reconcile in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Good morning Daily Audio Bible family this is John Opara recording from South Sudan. This call is for Margo and her husband originally from Australia but serving in Liberia. Margo first of all let me thank you and your husband for your sacrifice serving in my continent, Africa. And we share in your grief. This is really that tragedy and we recognize that. It is not from God. Most people do not know that our problem in Africa is not political, it is not racism, it’s not colonialization, it is not everything that people think today it is. It is simply that we are by nature religious people and in the process we expose, most people in Africa, we tend to expose ourselves to spiritual darkness in our quest to reach to God and this has been the endemic problem in Africa. So, I know that the God that we serve will help us to know Him and to serve Him alone. May God bless you, may God console and comfort you and your husband at this time in Jesus’ name Amen.

Good morning Daily Audio Bible family this is Immaculate Margaret. I’m calling out in New Orleans. I was just listening to the August 3rd podcast and Kingdom Seeker Daniel called and he let us know that he and Lady of Victory had been having issues with their marriage since the passing of their son which is normal. And it has been going on for at least four months. And I know he has got on this podcast and prayed consistently for couples. And I just thought it was so beautiful what the Lord did for him. He told us that he and his wife had been reunited and I just think that’s so beautiful, and it was…it…it brought a little tear to my eye ‘cause I was like that man prayed for his wife and she came home. And I pray that she stays home and knows that home is where the heart is. I’m praying for all parents that’s put there grieving lost children, anyone that’s out there grieving a loved one. I know that’s hard. There’s no words that I could actually give there but I’m praying for you. And God thank You so much for Your continuous protection over us and our families. Thank you DAB family for always being there praying. You guys are amazing. You are a true testament that prayer changes everything. So, I love you all and I pray that you continue to pray for me and my life. I just gotta get over these financial blocks. I’m praying for my family, for my children. They’re 15, two girls. Just…I love you guys and I thank you guys for the good family support. You have a great day.

Good morning family this is Bridget from New York City and I just wanted to thank barky. Barky you mentioned a story about pastor, you know, who was saying that I guess 'cause of your tattoos or whatever behavior, that you would be going to hell. And, you know, I had a similar experience where I ran from God because I was told I had to do X Y and Z. And I just couldn’t even see how I would be able to do that given the situation I was in at that time. I was with my husband who was my boyfriend and we had two kids and they were like you have to leave him and, you know, and be by yourself and seek God. And I was just like, whoa, if that’s the kind of God that we serve then I don’t want any part of it. And thanks…thanks be to God who brought me back and gave me a whole another church. And I just want to encourage you that, you know, people turn us away from God, not God. We may not like what God tells us sometimes when we’re praying and fasting, and the Holy Spirit may give us an impression to do something that we are not comfortable with. But it’s different when it comes from God and it’s a conviction versus condemnation from another human being. And I’m with you. I love the book of Job. I feel like the book of Job has taken my faith to such another level and I’m thankful for it. And I just wanna, you know, piggyback on what you said and thank you for sharing. And remember that here we are actually a family. May God bless you. Bye.

Good morning DAB family. Hey Brian, thank you for your definition of scoffers. Wowsies! Sometimes we just need to hold our tongues and walk away and yield to the Holy Spirit and remember that people are more important than arguments. And, yeah, and we should just pray for them and the situation in our own heart and ask for, you know, wisdom. So, that was really great. I loved that. And happy birthday to you, Daniel, Kingdom Seeker Daniel. Oh gosh what a great birthday present. What a…gosh…it just makes everything makes sense, why you’ve been praying for all the marriages. And we’ve been praying along with you brother. And O gosh your prayers have been so powerful and now I know why. And, so, we lift you and LOV up and Lord God we just pray Father that…we thank you God for this good work that you’ve done in them Lord. And Lord God we pray that you continue to do the work Lord. We bless you God before answering Daniels prayer beloved wife Lord and we just pray that you bless them in every way Lord God as they continue walking a road of grief 'cause that takes a long time too Lord God. So we…we just pray these things in Jesus’ name Amen.

The Daily Audio Bible Reading for Thursday September 1, 2022 (NIV)

Job 40-42

40 And the Lord (A)said to Job:

“Shall a faultfinder (B)contend with the Almighty?
He who argues with God, let him answer it.”

Job Promises Silence

Then Job answered the Lord and said:

“Behold, I am (C)of small account; what shall I answer you?
(D)I lay my hand on my mouth.
I have spoken (E)once, and I will not answer;
(F)twice, but I will proceed no further.”

The Lord Challenges Job

Then the Lord (G)answered Job out of the whirlwind and said:

(H)“Dress for action[a] like a man;
(I)I will question you, and you make it known to me.
Will you even put me in the wrong?
Will you condemn me that (J)you may be in the right?
Have you (K)an arm like God,
and can you thunder with (L)a voice like his?

10 “Adorn yourself with majesty and dignity;
(M)clothe yourself with glory and splendor.
11 Pour out the overflowings of your anger,
and look on everyone who is (N)proud and abase him.
12 Look on everyone who is proud and bring him low
and (O)tread down the wicked (P)where they stand.
13 (Q)Hide them all in (R)the dust together;
bind their faces in the world below.[b]
14 Then will I also acknowledge to you
that your own (S)right hand can save you.

15 “Behold, Behemoth,[c]
which I made as I made you;
he eats (T)grass like an ox.
16 Behold, his strength in his loins,
and his power in the muscles of his belly.
17 He makes his tail stiff like a cedar;
the sinews of his thighs are knit together.
18 His bones are tubes of bronze,
his limbs like bars of iron.

19 “He is (U)the first of (V)the works[d] of God;
let him who made him bring near his sword!
20 For the mountains yield food for him
where all the wild beasts play.
21 Under the lotus plants he lies,
in the shelter of (W)the reeds and in the marsh.
22 For his shade the lotus trees cover him;
the willows of the brook surround him.
23 Behold, if the river is turbulent he is not frightened;
he is confident though Jordan rushes against his mouth.
24 Can one take him by his eyes,[e]
or pierce his nose with a snare?

41 [f] “Can you draw out (X)Leviathan[g] with a fishhook
or press down his tongue with a cord?
Can you put (Y)a rope in his nose
or pierce his jaw with (Z)a hook?
Will he make many pleas to you?
Will he speak to you soft words?
Will he make a covenant with you
to take him for (AA)your servant forever?
Will you play with him as with a bird,
or will you put him on a leash for your girls?
Will traders bargain over him?
Will they divide him up among the merchants?
Can you fill his skin with harpoons
or his head with fishing spears?
Lay your hands on him;
remember the battle—you will not do it again!
[h] Behold, the hope of a man is false;
he is laid low even at the sight of him.
10 No one is so fierce that he dares to stir him up.
Who then is he who can stand before me?
11 (AB)Who has first given to me, that I should repay him?
(AC)Whatever is under the whole heaven is mine.

12 “I will not keep silence concerning his limbs,
or his mighty strength, or his goodly frame.
13 Who can strip off his outer garment?
Who would come near him with a bridle?
14 Who can open the doors of his face?
Around his teeth is terror.
15 His back is made of[i] rows of shields,
shut up closely as with a seal.
16 One is so near to another
that no air can come between them.
17 They are (AD)joined one to another;
they clasp each other and cannot be separated.
18 His sneezings flash forth light,
and his eyes are like (AE)the eyelids of the dawn.
19 Out of his mouth go flaming torches;
sparks of fire leap forth.
20 Out of his nostrils comes forth smoke,
as from a boiling pot and burning rushes.
21 His breath (AF)kindles coals,
and a flame comes forth from his mouth.
22 In his neck abides strength,
and terror dances before him.
23 The folds of his flesh (AG)stick together,
firmly cast on him and immovable.
24 His heart is hard as a stone,
hard as the lower millstone.
25 When he raises himself up, the mighty[j] are afraid;
at the crashing they are beside themselves.
26 Though the sword reaches him, it does not avail,
nor the spear, the dart, or the javelin.
27 He counts iron as straw,
and bronze as rotten wood.
28 The arrow cannot make him flee;
for him, sling stones are turned to stubble.
29 Clubs are counted as stubble;
he laughs at the rattle of javelins.
30 His underparts are like sharp (AH)potsherds;
he spreads himself like (AI)a threshing sledge on the mire.
31 He makes the deep boil like a pot;
he makes the sea like a pot of ointment.
32 Behind him he leaves a shining wake;
one would think the deep to be white-haired.
33 (AJ)On earth there is not his like,
a creature without fear.
34 He sees everything that is high;
he is king over all the (AK)sons of pride.”

Job's Confession and Repentance

42 Then Job answered the Lord and said:

“I know that you can (AL)do all things,
and that no purpose of yours can be thwarted.
(AM)‘Who is this that hides counsel without knowledge?’
Therefore I have uttered what I did not understand,
things (AN)too wonderful for me, which I did not know.
‘Hear, and I will speak;
(AO)I will question you, and you make it known to me.’
I had heard of you by the hearing of the ear,
but now my eye sees you;
therefore I despise myself,
and repent[k] in (AP)dust and ashes.”

The Lord Rebukes Job's Friends

After the Lord had spoken these words to Job, the Lord said to Eliphaz (AQ)the Temanite: “My anger burns against you and against your two friends, for you have not spoken of me what is right, as my servant Job has. Now therefore take (AR)seven bulls and seven rams and go to my servant Job and (AS)offer up a burnt offering for yourselves. And my servant Job shall (AT)pray for you, for I will accept his prayer not to deal with you according to your folly. For you have not spoken of me what is right, as my servant Job has.” (AU)So Eliphaz the Temanite and Bildad the Shuhite and Zophar the Naamathite went and did what the Lord had told them, and the Lord accepted Job's prayer.

The Lord Restores Job's Fortunes

10 And the Lord (AV)restored the fortunes of Job, when he had prayed for his friends. And the Lord gave Job (AW)twice as much as he had before. 11 Then came to him all his (AX)brothers and sisters and all who had (AY)known him before, and ate bread with him in his house. And they (AZ)showed him sympathy and comforted him for all the evil[l] that the Lord had brought upon him. And each of them gave him (BA)a piece of money[m] and (BB)a ring of gold.

12 And the Lord blessed (BC)the latter days of Job more than his beginning. And he had (BD)14,000 sheep, 6,000 camels, 1,000 yoke of oxen, and 1,000 female donkeys. 13 He had also (BE)seven sons and three daughters. 14 And he called the name of the first daughter Jemimah, and the name of the second Keziah, and the name of the third Keren-happuch. 15 And in all the land there were no women so beautiful as Job's daughters. And their father gave them an inheritance (BF)among their brothers. 16 And after this Job lived 140 years, and (BG)saw his sons, and his sons' sons, four generations. 17 And Job died, an old man, and (BH)full of days.

2 Corinthians 5:11-21

The Ministry of Reconciliation

11 Therefore, knowing (A)the fear of the Lord, we persuade others. But (B)what we are is known to God, and I hope it is known also to your conscience. 12 (C)We are not commending ourselves to you again but (D)giving you cause to boast about us, so that you may be able to answer those who boast about outward appearance and not about what is in the heart. 13 For if we (E)are beside ourselves, it is for God; if we are in our right mind, it is for you. 14 For the love of Christ (F)controls us, because we have concluded this: that (G)one has died for all, therefore all have died; 15 and he died for all, (H)that those who live might no longer live for themselves but (I)for him who for their sake died and was raised.

16 From now on, therefore, (J)we regard no one according to the flesh. Even though we once regarded Christ according to the flesh, we regard him thus no longer. 17 Therefore, if anyone is (K)in Christ, he is (L)a new creation.[a] (M)The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. 18 All this is from God, (N)who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us (O)the ministry of reconciliation; 19 that is, in Christ God was reconciling[b] the world to himself, (P)not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us (Q)the message of reconciliation. 20 Therefore, (R)we are ambassadors for Christ, (S)God making his appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. 21 (T)For our sake he made him to be sin (U)who knew no sin, so that in him we might become (V)the righteousness of God.

Psalm 45

Your Throne, O God, Is Forever

To the choirmaster: according to Lilies. A Maskil[a] of (A)the Sons of Korah; a love song.

45 My heart overflows with a pleasing theme;
I address my verses to the king;
my tongue is like the pen of (B)a ready scribe.

You are (C)the most handsome of the sons of men;
(D)grace is poured upon your lips;
therefore God has blessed you forever.
(E)Gird your (F)sword on your thigh, O (G)mighty one,
in (H)your splendor and majesty!

In your majesty (I)ride out victoriously
for the cause of truth and meekness and righteousness;
let your right hand teach you (J)awesome deeds!
Your arrows are sharp
in the heart of the king's enemies;
the peoples fall under you.

(K)Your throne, O God, is forever and ever.
The (L)scepter of your kingdom is a scepter of uprightness;
(M)you have loved righteousness and hated wickedness.
Therefore (N)God, your God, has (O)anointed you
with the oil of (P)gladness (Q)beyond your companions;
your robes are all fragrant with (R)myrrh and aloes and cassia.
From ivory palaces (S)stringed instruments make you glad;
daughters of kings are among your ladies of honor;
(T)at your right hand stands the queen in (U)gold of Ophir.

10 Hear, O daughter, and consider, and incline your ear:
forget your people and your father's house,
11 and the king will desire your beauty.
Since he is your (V)lord, (W)bow to him.
12 The people[b] of Tyre will (X)seek your favor with (Y)gifts,
(Z)the richest of the people.[c]

13 All glorious is (AA)the princess in her chamber, with robes interwoven with gold.
14 (AB)In many-colored robes (AC)she is led to the king,
with her virgin companions following behind her.
15 With joy and gladness they are led along
as they enter the palace of the king.

16 In place of your fathers shall be your sons;
you will make them (AD)princes in all the earth.
17 (AE)I will cause your name to be remembered in all generations;
therefore nations will praise you forever and ever.
