The Daily Audio Bible Reading for Tuesday June 1, 2021 (NIV)

2 Samuel 18:1-19:10

Absalom’s Defeat

18 David reviewed his troops and appointed commanders of thousands and of hundreds over them. 2 He then sent out the troops, a third under Joab, a third under Joab’s brother Abishai son of Zeruiah, and a third under Ittai of Gath. The king said to the troops, “I must also march out with you.”

3 “You must not go!” (A) the people pleaded. “If we have to flee, they will not pay any attention to us. Even if half of us die, they will not pay any attention to us because you are worth[a] ten thousand of us. Therefore, it is better if you support us from the city.”

4 “I will do whatever you think is best,” the king replied to them. So he stood beside the city gate while all the troops marched out by hundreds and thousands. 5 The king commanded Joab, Abishai, and Ittai, “Treat the young man Absalom gently for my sake.” All the people heard the king’s orders to all the commanders about Absalom.

6 Then David’s forces marched into the field to engage Israel in battle, which took place in the forest of Ephraim. 7 Israel’s army was defeated by David’s soldiers, and the slaughter there was vast that day—twenty thousand dead. 8 The battle spread over the entire area, and that day the forest claimed more people than the sword.

Absalom’s Death

9 Absalom was riding on his mule when he happened to meet David’s soldiers. When the mule went under the tangled branches of a large oak tree, Absalom’s head was caught fast in the tree. The mule under him kept going, so he was suspended in midair.[b] 10 One of the men saw him and informed Joab. He said, “I just saw Absalom hanging in an oak tree!”

11 “You just saw him!” Joab exclaimed.[c] “Why didn’t you strike him to the ground right there? I would have given you ten silver pieces[d] and a belt!”

12 The man replied to Joab, “Even if I had the weight of a thousand pieces of silver[e] in my hand, I would not raise my hand against the king’s son. For we heard the king command you, Abishai, and Ittai, ‘Protect the young man Absalom for me.’[f](B) 13 If I had jeopardized my own[g] life—and nothing is hidden from the king—you would have abandoned me.”

14 Joab said, “I’m not going to waste time with you!” He then took three spears[h] in his hand and thrust them into Absalom’s chest. While Absalom was still alive in the oak tree, 15 ten young men who were Joab’s armor-bearers surrounded Absalom, struck him, and killed him. 16 Joab blew the ram’s horn, and the troops broke off their pursuit of Israel because Joab restrained them. 17 They took Absalom, threw him into a large pit in the forest, and raised up a huge mound of stones over him.(C) And all Israel fled, each to his tent.(D)

18 When he was alive, Absalom had taken a pillar and raised it up(E) for himself in the King’s Valley,(F) since he thought, “I have no son(G) to preserve the memory of my name.” So he named the pillar after himself. It is still called Absalom’s Monument today.

19 Ahimaaz son of Zadok(H) said, “Please let me run and tell the king the good news that the Lord has vindicated him by freeing him from his enemies.”

20 Joab replied to him, “You are not the man to take good news today. You may do it another day, but today you aren’t taking good news, because the king’s son is dead.” 21 Joab then said to a Cushite, “Go tell the king what you have seen.” The Cushite bowed to Joab and took off running.

22 However, Ahimaaz son of Zadok persisted and said to Joab, “No matter what, please let me also run behind the Cushite!”

Joab replied, “My son, why do you want to run since you won’t get a reward?” [i]

23 “No matter what, I want to run!”

“Then run!” Joab said to him. So Ahimaaz ran by way of the plain and outran the Cushite.

24 David was sitting between the city gates(I) when the watchman went up to the roof of the city gate and over to the wall.(J) The watchman looked out and saw a man running alone. 25 He called out and told the king.

The king said, “If he’s alone, he bears good news.”

As the first runner came closer, 26 the watchman saw another man running. He called out to the gatekeeper, “Look! Another man is running alone!”

“This one is also bringing good news,” said the king.

27 The watchman said, “The way the first man runs looks to me like the way Ahimaaz son of Zadok runs.”(K)

“This is a good man; he comes with good news,”(L) the king commented.

28 Ahimaaz called out to the king, “All is well,” and paid homage to the king with his face to the ground. He continued, “Blessed be the Lord your God! He delivered up the men who rebelled against my lord the king.”

29 The king asked, “Is the young man Absalom all right?”

Ahimaaz replied, “When Joab sent the king’s servant and your servant, I saw a big disturbance, but I don’t know what it was.”

30 The king said, “Move aside and stand here.” So he stood to one side.

31 Just then the Cushite came and said, “May my lord the king hear the good news: The Lord has vindicated you today by freeing you from all who rise against you!”

32 The king asked the Cushite, “Is the young man Absalom all right?”

The Cushite replied, “I wish that the enemies of my lord the king, along with all who rise up against you with evil intent, would become like that young man.”(M)

33 The king was deeply moved and went up to the chamber above the city gate and wept. As he walked, he cried, “My son Absalom! My son, my son Absalom! If only I had died instead of you, Absalom, my son, my son!” (N)

David’s Kingdom Restored

19 It was reported to Joab, “The king is weeping. He’s mourning over Absalom.” 2 That day’s victory was turned into mourning for all the troops because on that day the troops heard, “The king is grieving over his son.” 3 So they returned to the city quietly that day like troops come in when they are humiliated after fleeing in battle. 4 But the king covered his face(O) and cried loudly, “My son Absalom! Absalom, my son, my son!”

5 Then Joab went into the house to the king and said, “Today you have shamed all your soldiers—those who saved your life as well as your sons, your wives, and your concubines— 6 by loving your enemies and hating those who love you! Today you have made it clear that the commanders and soldiers mean nothing to you. In fact, today I know that if Absalom were alive and all of us were dead, it would be fine with you![j]

7 “Now get up! Go out and encourage[k] your soldiers, for I swear by the Lord that if you don’t go out, not a man will remain with you tonight.(P) This will be worse for you than all the trouble that has come to you from your youth until now!”

8 So the king got up and sat in the city gate,(Q) and all the people were told, “Look, the king is sitting in the city gate.” Then they all came into the king’s presence.

Meanwhile, each Israelite had fled to his tent.(R) 9 People throughout all the tribes of Israel were arguing among themselves, saying, “The king rescued us from the grasp of our enemies,(S) and he saved us from the grasp of the Philistines,(T) but now he has fled from the land because of Absalom.(U) 10 But Absalom, the man we anointed over us, has died in battle. So why do you say nothing about restoring the king?”

John 20

The Empty Tomb

20 On(A) the first day of the week(B) Mary Magdalene(C) came to the tomb(D) early, while it was still dark. She saw that the stone(E) had been removed from the tomb. 2 So she went running to Simon Peter(F) and to the other disciple, the one Jesus loved, and said to them, “They’ve taken the Lord out of the tomb,(G) and we don’t know where they’ve put him!”

3 At that, Peter and the other disciple went out, heading for the tomb. 4 The two were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and got to the tomb first. 5 Stooping down, he saw the linen cloths(H) lying there, but he did not go in. 6 Then, following him, Simon Peter also came. He entered the tomb and saw the linen cloths lying there. 7 The wrapping(I) that had been on his head was not lying with the linen cloths(J) but was folded up in a separate place by itself. 8 The other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, then also went in, saw, and believed. 9 For they did not yet understand the Scripture(K) that he must rise(L) from the dead.(M) 10 Then the disciples returned to the place where they were staying.

Mary Magdalene Sees the Risen Lord

11 But(N) Mary stood outside the tomb,(O) crying. As she was crying, she stooped to look into the tomb. 12 She saw two angels(P) in white sitting where Jesus’s body(Q) had been lying, one at the head and the other at the feet. 13 They said to her, “Woman, why are you crying?”

“Because they’ve taken away my Lord,”(R) she told them, “and I don’t know where they’ve put him.”

14 Having said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not know it was Jesus.(S) 15 “Woman,” Jesus said to her, “why are you crying? Who is it that you’re seeking?”

Supposing he was the gardener, she replied, “Sir, if you’ve carried him away, tell me where you’ve put him, and I will take him away.”

16 Jesus said to her, “Mary.”

Turning around, she said to him in Aramaic,[a] “Rabboni!”—which means “Teacher.”(T)

17 “Don’t cling to me,” Jesus told her, “since I have not yet ascended(U) to the Father.(V) But go to my brothers(W) and tell them that I am ascending to my Father(X) and your Father, to my God(Y) and your God.”

18 Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord!” (Z) And she told them what[b] he had said to her.

The Disciples Commissioned

19 When it was evening on that first day of the week,(AA) the disciples were gathered together with the doors locked because they feared the Jews. Jesus came, stood among them, and said to them, “Peace be with you.”(AB)

20 Having said this, he showed them his hands and his side.(AC) So the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord.

21 Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me,(AD) I also send you.”(AE) 22 After saying this, he breathed on them(AF) and said,[c] “Receive the Holy Spirit.(AG) 23 If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.”(AH)

Thomas Sees and Believes

24 But Thomas(AI) (called “Twin”[d]), one of the Twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. 25 So the other disciples were telling him, “We’ve seen the Lord!”

But he said to them, “If I don’t see the mark of the nails in his hands, put my finger into the mark of the nails,(AJ) and put my hand into his side,(AK) I will never believe.”(AL)

26 A week later his disciples were indoors again, and Thomas was with them. Even though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.”

27 Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here and look at my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Don’t be faithless, but believe.”(AM)

28 Thomas responded to him, “My Lord and my God!”

29 Jesus said, “Because you have seen me, you have believed.[e] Blessed are those who have not seen and yet believe.”(AN)

The Purpose of This Gospel

30 Jesus performed many other signs(AO) in the presence of his disciples that are not written(AP) in this book.(AQ) 31 But these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah,(AR) the Son(AS) of God,[f](AT) and that by believing you may have life in his name.(AU)

Proverbs 16:14-15

14 A king’s fury is a messenger of death,

2 Samuel 18:1-19:10, John 20:1-31, Psalm 119:153-176, Proverbs 16:14-15

Today is the 1st day of June welcome to the Daily Audio Bible, I’m Brian it is wonderful to be here with you today as we greet a brand-new month, the 6th month of the year and the 152nd day of our journey through this year together and through the bible together so, well done, well done friends. We’ve been around this Global Campfire 152 days now and we’re well into our year and what a year. The scriptures have spoken some significant things into our personal lives I’m sure, definitely into my personal life. But just also into humanity just into the things that we see around us it’s so interesting to see that so many of the underlying things that we can see in our world right now have been underlying things in the world for a long time, they’re…they’re human things and our Father, our Creator who created us in His image pursues our hearts at every turn. And that will never let up, that will never let up while we’re reading the bible, that will never let up. He wants to be in a relationship with us and so with that in mind we enter into this 6th month of the year around the Global Campfire and take the next step forward. We’re reading from the Christian Standard Bible this week. In our reading from the Old Testament we have the story of Absalom going on right now. Absalom the son of King David, so a prince is attempting to take over his father’s throne, understanding that that would be the death of his father if he’s successful and that’s where we find ourselves. David has fled Jerusalem, Absalom has entered Jerusalem. Absalom has gone after his father with his army and it’s inevitable that there’s a showdown. 2 Samuel chapter 18 verse 1 through 19 verse 10.

Commentary:

Okay so as we enter into this brand new 6th month of the year we find ourselves in a bit of transition uh, in the Old Testament in 2 Samuel. The cue attempt by Absalom in now over because Absalom is now dead. So, the king’s son, one of the princes of Israel has been killed in battle and David is very, very sad. And that’s understandable, that was his son. But it was also a son that wanted his dad dead so, it’s kind of a complicated scenario there. If we pause here for second and go back, just kind of think back to the beginning of 2 Samuel when…even for that matter back to 1 Samuel when David is on the run from King Saul we see David clinging to God for dear life and reverent…reverencing God in every conceivable situation. Like he knows that he’s alive because God is keeping him alive. If we’ll remember during that whole episode with Saul and David, once Saul was killed in battle and David had become King in Hebron, some very influential people were killed along the way. Uh, like Saul’s son Ishbasheth who had been anointed the king, he was assassinated. Uh, the general of Saul’s Army, he’s assassinated. People are watching David to see if he had anything to do with it, like they’re looking to David to get their cues about what comes next and whether there gonna get behind David. And David shows himself upright and honorable and that makes a huge difference, in fact, it makes THE difference. Today, in David’s life in this reading, the Army’s that are loyal to David because of all these things, because he’s the king, they have vanquished a foe, it just happens to be the King’s son and so, they’re still looking to David, right, for their cues and he’s behaving very differently. He’s weeping and mourning like, at the death of his son in the same way that he would have wept and mourned over one of the Lord’s anointed being struck down or over a righteous uh, valiant warrior being struck down outside of battle. And so, Joab, who is the…the leader of David’s army is like, nobody will be left, if you keep this up, nobody will be left, and what happens to you next will end up being even worse than anything else that has ever happened to you because basically the cues that their getting from David is that their lives and their loyalty don’t matter. It was the kings son, the rest of them could have all died and he’d been fine with it if the kings son could have lived. And that’s what Joab is explaining to him if…if this is how you feel, you will have nothing left by the morning. And so, David will encourage his people but we see that there’s just such a transition after David takes his friends wife Bathsheba. Things never, ever are the same for King David again. And of course, we’ll pick-up that story tomorrow.

Then in the gospel of John we don’t have a death we have a resurrection and Jesus is restored to life victorious. And so, we read John’s account of the after-math of that and we’ll have one more day to kind of sow that that up from the gospel of John we will conclude John’s gospel tomorrow. Which means we will conclude the gospels, the four gospels tomorrow. And so, after tomorrow’s reading we’ll earn our badge. If we’re using the Daily Audio Bible app and checking off the days as they come by we will have completed another section of the bible, the gospels. We’ll get our gospels badge for 2021 and so I’m looking forward to that. And then after we finish the gospels we will move into the story of what comes next which will be interesting because it is the story of all that comes next but some of the things that we’re gonna read going forward are earlier writings than the gospels that we just read. Although all of it was written down after Jesus’ ascension. But we have plenty of time for that, we’ll get into all that, we’re just, we’re here at the 1st day of the 6th month so we got a ways to go and a lot of ground to cover and I am so excited that we can cover this ground together and we can be on this voyage together each day. All we have to do is show up, each day and just allow the bible to transform the way we think about things and begin to shift things from within.

Prayer:

And so, Father we thank You for Your word and as we mark the time, as we begin this 6th month of the year and as we begin to transition in…in the scriptures into new territory Holy Spirit come. You are the Guide. We are following You on this journey and we ask that You be a light to our path that You lead us deeper into Jesus. That You lead us into all truths and we ask this in the name of Jesus. Amen.

Good morning one and all um, it’s Susan from Canada, God’s Yellow Flower calling. And I just want to pray for Zach this morning um, who wants to be a pastor, feels Gods calling on him. And Lord God I just lift him up to You. I thank You that You have called him into ministry. I thank You for his goals and for his obedience and for his um, desires to um, to bring You to others in all kinds of ways. I pray, dear God that You would provide for him along every step of the way. That You would open his eyes and unstop his ears to hear and see all the things that You have prepared for him. I pray dear God that You would um, not only provide financially but You would sharpen his mind to absorb the studies carefully and fully and successfully. Guide him and lead him in the way you want him to go Lord in all things and in all ways, and all the days of his life. In Jesus name I pray. Amen.

Please help her foot to have a good time, please help it to heal again and we rebuke any foul spirits hanging around His Little Sharie and her health and anything that has to do with her and her family and we pray that um, nothing will come against them. And anything that comes against us and her and our family of believers we’re putting up the shield of faith over them. And we’re…and we’re fighting with our faith. Hey guys, so today’s tail was Absalom and his sister who’s rigged and then plotting for 2 years to kill his brother, 2 years. It made me think about me and my family, um just with unforgiveness and plotting and wickedness and I’m sure it applies to all of you in some way. We’re all in a horri…horrible world and we’re called as Christians to forgive. But there is many of us who are not believers um, many of our families who are not and they don’t really have a call to forgive. And in thinking about our call to forgive I find it super hard to forgive, to really forgive. Like maybe if I could sit down with somebody and have a full-on conversation, an argument and stay in and we both hurt and get through the issues and come to a resolution but most of the time it’s not like that. People, you, I, we, are cowards and are selfish and don’t like pain we do everything we can to avoid pain. So, we run away, we hide in unforgiveness and we make little Christian-eze prayers so you know, I forgive them, but really we don’t, I don’t quite often and it sucks, it’s the nature. I personally don’t quite know how to overcome it. You know I’ve had many conversations about forgiveness and…and uh, people say well if you forgive in your heart and pray for God, you don’t have to feel it but just do it. I hope that’s the case but is it? I don’t know. We’re called to forgive. Yeah, like we believe in Christ and we’re going to heaven but we’re called to forgive or else we won’t be forgiven, kind of a, what’s the right word, a juxtaposition, I’m not sure. But forgiveness man, it’s a big deal and it’s something that I struggle with big time, especially against Christians, people who’ve hurt me who’ve I’ve loved and I feel don’t love me anymore. Hello DAB family this is Iva from Ohio. It is Friday night and I just had the last day of school for the 2021 school year and I’m gonna tell you it was a difficult one. I’m not a rookie, this was my 26th year of teaching but it was a really hard year. Since last March my school district has done school 8 different ways and I am excited that the year is over but I am also in need of restoration and I’m in need of renewal and I would guess that many teachers across the country and across the world are feeling the same. And so, if you know of any teachers would you please pray for them, would you pray that we would be restored this summer that we would be renewed this summer that we would move beyond this school year into the creative place that God wants us to be for the next school year. And uh, I just thank you for your prayers and I thank you in advance for all that you do in the DAB community. You are pretty special people and I love you.

Blessings DAB family my name is George Powell. And I’m calling to ask you for prayer. I am going through a moment in my life that I’ve never gone through before. The hand of God is heavy on me. Right now, doors are closing left and right, all around me, people are leaving my life, left and right. And I know it’s for a purpose and I know it’s for a reason. My name is George Powell. I need prayer partners. I need people to pray for my health and my strength. Keep the prayer of restoration between me and my family and those that I love. I know that I am not perfect but I’m seeking God with my whole heart. And I sit here and I pray and I see God every single day and it’s a struggle. Cause it’s like I don’t hear from God and I know that all of you out there that are faithful Daily Audio Bible listeners, you’re family and you believe and I need you to believe for me and help me believe. I’m in jail, I just went through a twelve-year incarceration that the Lord released me from but I messed up and now I’m back. I need as much love and help as I can get right now, moral support.
