2 Samuel 12

David and Nathan

12 So the Lord sent Nathan to David. He came and told him this:

There were two men in a city. One was rich and one poor. The rich man had a large number of flocks and herds. The poor man did not own anything except one little ewe lamb, which he had bought. He raised it so that it grew up together with him and his children. It ate from his food and drank from his cup. It slept in his arms. It was like a daughter to him. When a traveler came to the rich man, the rich man was unwilling to take an animal from his flock or from his herd to prepare a meal for the traveler who had come to him. So he took the lamb from the poor man and prepared it for the man who had come to him.

David’s anger flared up against that man. He said to Nathan, “As the Lord lives, the man who has done this is as good as dead. In place of that lamb, he will restore four lambs, because he did this and had no pity.”

Nathan told David, “You are the man. This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says.”

The Message of Judgment Against David

I anointed you king over Israel. I rescued you from the hand of Saul. I gave the house of your master to you, and I gave the wives of your master into your embrace. I gave you the house of Israel and the house of Judah. If this was too little, I would have added even more. Why have you despised the word of the Lord by doing evil in his eyes? You have struck down Uriah the Hittite with the sword. You have taken his wife as your own wife. You have killed him with the sword of the Ammonites. 10 So now the sword will not depart from your house forever, because you have despised me and have taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be your wife.

11 This is what the Lord says. Look! I am raising up disaster against you from your own house. Right in front of your eyes I will take your wives and give them to your neighbor, and he will lie down with your wives in the sight of the sun. 12 Because you acted in secret, I will do this in front of all Israel in broad daylight.

13 David said to Nathan, “I have sinned against the Lord.”

Nathan said to David, “The Lord himself has put away your sin. You will not die. 14 Nevertheless, because by this deed you have treated the Lord with utter contempt,[a] the child that is born to you shall surely die.” 15 Then Nathan went to his house.

The Lord struck the child that Uriah’s wife had borne for David, and the child became sick. 16 David sought the Lord’s mercy for the child. David fasted and spent the night lying on the ground. 17 The elders of his household stood beside him to pick him up off the ground, but he was not willing, and he would not eat food with them.

18 On the seventh day the child died. The servants of David were afraid to tell him that the child was dead, because they said, “Look! When the child was living, we spoke to David, but he did not listen to what we said. How will we speak to him now when the child is dead? He might do something harmful.”

19 When David saw that his servants were whispering together, he understood that the child was dead. So David said to his servants, “Is the child dead?” They said, “Yes, he is dead.”

20 Then David got up from the ground, washed, put on lotion, and changed his clothes. He went to the House of the Lord and worshipped. He then went back to his house and asked for food. So they prepared a meal for him, and he ate.

21 His servants said to him, “What are you doing? While the child was alive, you fasted and wept. But when the child died, you got up and ate food.”

22 He said, “While the child was alive, I fasted and wept because I said, ‘Who knows? Will the Lord be gracious to me and let my child live?’ 23 Now he has died. Why should I fast? Am I able to return him to life again? I will go to him, but he will not return to me.”

24 David comforted Bathsheba, his wife. He went to her and lay down with her. She gave birth to a son. David called him Solomon. The Lord loved him, 25 and the Lord sent a message by the hand of Nathan the prophet that he should be called Jedidiah[b] because of the Lord.

The Defeat of the Ammonites

26 Joab fought against Rabbah of the Ammonites and captured the royal city.

27 He sent messengers to David and said, “I have fought against Rabbah. I have also captured the city’s water supply. 28 Now gather the rest of the troops, set up camp against the city, and take it. If you do not, I might take the city, and it will be named after me.” 29 So David gathered all the troops and went to Rabbah. He fought against it and took it.

30 He removed the gold crown of their king[c] from his head. It weighed seventy-five pounds,[d] and it had a precious stone. It was placed on[e] the head of David.

He brought out large quantities of plunder from the city. 31 He also brought the people out from it and made them work with saws, with iron picks and axes, and at brickmaking. He did the same to all the cities of the Ammonites. Then David and all the troops returned to Jerusalem.

John 16

No Greater Love—in Joy

16 “I have told you these things so that you will not fall away. They will put you out of the synagogues. In fact, a time is coming when anyone who murders you will think he is offering a service to God. They will do these things because they have not known the Father or me. But I have told you these things so that when their[a] time comes, you may remember that I told them to you. I did not tell you these things from the beginning, because I was with you.

“But now I am going away to him who sent me, and not one of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’ Yet because I have told you these things, sorrow has filled your heart. Nevertheless, I am telling you the truth: It is good for you that I go away. For if I do not go away, the Counselor will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you. When he comes, he will convict the world about sin, about righteousness, and about judgment: about sin, because they do not believe in me; 10 about righteousness, because I am going to the Father and you will no longer see me; 11 about judgment, because the ruler of this world has been condemned.

12 “I still have many things to tell you, but you cannot bear them now. 13 But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into[b] all truth. For he will not speak on his own, but whatever he hears he will speak. He will also declare to you what is to come. 14 He will glorify me, because he will take from what is mine and declare it to you. 15 Everything the Father has is mine. This is why I said that he takes from what is mine and will declare it to you.

16 “In a little while you are not going to see me anymore, and again in a little while you will see me, because I am going away to the Father.”[c]

17 Therefore some of his disciples asked one another, “What does he mean when he tells us, ‘In a little while you are not going to see me, and again in a little while you will see me,’ and ‘Because I am going away to the Father’?” 18 So they kept asking, “What does he mean by ‘a little while’? We don’t understand what he’s saying.”

19 Jesus knew that they wanted to ask him about this, so he said to them, “Are you trying to determine with one another what I meant by saying, ‘In a little while you are not going to see me, and again in a little while you will see me’? 20 Amen, Amen, I tell you: You will weep and wail, but the world will rejoice. You will become sorrowful, but your sorrow will turn to joy. 21 A woman giving birth has pain, because her time has come. But when she has delivered the child, she no longer remembers the anguish, because of her joy that a person has been born into the world.

22 “So you also have sorrow now. But I will see you again. Your heart will rejoice, and no one will take your joy away from you. 23 In that day you will not ask me anything. Amen, Amen, I tell you: Whatever you ask the Father in my name, he will give you. 24 Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask, and you will receive, so that your joy may be made complete.

25 “I have told you these things using figurative language. A time is coming when I will no longer speak to you using figurative language, but I will tell you plainly about the Father. 26 In that day you will ask in my name, and I am not telling you that I will make requests of the Father on your behalf. 27 For the Father himself loves you, because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God. 28 I came from the Father and have come into the world. Now I am going to leave the world and go to the Father.”

29 “Yes!” his disciples said. “Now you are speaking plainly and not using figurative language. 30 Now we know that you know everything and do not need to have anyone ask you anything. For this reason we believe that you came from God.”

31 Jesus answered them, “Now do you believe? 32 Listen, a time is coming, in fact it is here, when you will be scattered, everyone to his own home. You will leave me all alone. Yet I am not going to be alone, because the Father is with me. 33 I have told you these things, so that you may have peace in me. In this world you are going to have trouble. But be courageous! I have overcome the world.”

Psalm 119:65-80

Tet: It Is Good to Be Afflicted

65 You have done good for your servant, O Lord,
according to your words.
66 Teach me good judgment and knowledge,
for I believe in your commandments.
67 Before I was afflicted I strayed,
but now I keep your saying.
68 You are good, and you do good.
Teach me your statutes.
69 The arrogant have smeared me with lies.
I guard your precepts with all my heart.
70 Their calloused hearts[a] feel nothing,
but I delight in your law.
71 It was good for me that I was afflicted,
so that I might learn your statutes.
72 Better for me is the law from your mouth
than thousands of pieces of silver and gold.

Yod: Those Who Fear You

73 Your hands made me and established me.
Give me understanding.
Then I will learn your commandments.
74 May those who fear you see me and rejoice,
because I wait confidently for your word.
75 I know, Lord, that your judgments are righteous.
In faithfulness you have afflicted me.
76 Please let your mercy be my comfort,
according to your saying to your servant.
77 Let your abundant compassion come to me that I may live,
because your law is my delight.
78 Let the arrogant be put to shame,
because they have wronged me with lies.
As for me, I will meditate on your precepts.
79 Let those who fear you turn to me,
and those who know your testimonies.
80 Let my heart be blameless regarding your statutes,
so that I may not be put to shame.

2 Samuel 9:1-11-27, John 15:1-27, Psalm 119:49-64, Proverbs 16:1-3

Today is the 26th day of May welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I’m sorry…I was…I was like chewing something. Okay. I think I’m all in the clear now. I didn’t want to chew so close to your ear. So, here we are, the 26th day of May already to take the next step forward as we continue this journey. And first up, of course, we’ll be moving back into the Old Testament, which lands us back in second Samuel squarely in the life of King David. So, we’re reading from the Evangelical Heritage Version, the EHV, this week. Second Samuel 9, 10, and 11 today.

Commentary:

Okay. Second Kings today. It’s like we were going along so well. What happened? All of a sudden what happened? David has been this upstanding, upright, godly God-fearing king who brings justice to his people. The people respect David. They know what he went through with Saul and they watched his ascension to power and the way that he was humble in all of it. And the next thing we know, we flip the page and Bathsheba’s naked taking a bath and he sees her, and he sends for her and she comes and she’s another man’s wife and…I mean…she gets pregnant, so they get together. And it’s a difficult situation because it’s the king. So, does…you know, she doesn’t really have any say in the matter, her husband Uriah is off fighting a battle on behalf of King David while King David is sitting in the palace sleeping with his wife. And then it turns out she’s pregnant and she sends word back. So, now she is bearing a prince, the royal a royal child. And David’s got this situation. But he seems to be decisive about what he is going to do and it’s like what is going to do is only bad. He calls for Uriah the Hittite to come from the battle and what he’s gonna do is kinda give Uriah a furlough so that he can go home and be with his wife, get rested up, maybe cover-up the pregnancy. Not maybe. Cover-up the pregnancy and all that transpired to make her pregnant. But Uriah won’t behave after that fashion. He has honor for his fellow soldiers his king and the battle, the mission that they are on and he won't…he won’t do it. The irony is now, that Uriah is acting more like David than David. And David is acting more like Saul than anybody else in this situation. Saul tried to send David into battle lots of times to get him killed. Now David, after seeing that he’s not going to get Uriah to go home and cover this whole thing up, sends him back to the front lines where he will most certainly be killed. And he most certainly is killed. One of the little, little pieces of this story that is so fascinating is, later on when we kinda get to the end of David’s life and his reign we’ll meet a lot of names, like a big recap, all the different kinds of people that were involved in what they did and there will be the valiant soldiers…like the best of the best of the nation, they’ll be named, the mighty warriors, the mighty warriors of Israel, the mighty warriors of King David and Uriah the Hittite was one of them. One of the most loyal, dedicated gifted committed warriors David had. He had him killed to cover up what he had done, which looks way more like Saul. And we’ll continue this story because it hasn't…I mean we’re kind of in the middle of this story. So, we have some more territory to cover but what seems to become quite apparent in this story is very very similar warnings that came through Moses. When you get into that land and you don’t have anything to fight for anymore and all is going well, when you find that you are living in houses you didn’t build, and you’re eating from vineyards you didn’t plant, all is well all around you, prosperity is the norm then don’t forget who your God is because when you make that turn it may take a minute but it’s over. In so many ways that is what we see here. David has been a warrior, he has been fighting, he has been honorable, he’s been holding and clinging to God for his very life. So many times, he’s clinging to God as the only hope to stay alive and God has kept them alive, but now he has subdued his enemies. He has been blessed. He has everything that he could want, and he wants Bathsheba. He wants something he can’t have, he’s not supposed to have, but he’s got it all and peace is on every side, and there’s no reason to cling to God for dear life anymore. And, so, he gets himself to the position where this type of thing could happen. It doesn’t have to…I mean for us to apply this to our lives doesn’t have to be adultery, doesn’t not to be sexual, doesn’t not be anything like that. It could be anything that can distract us, anything that can make us self-sufficient, a decision that we make out of our own strength and out of our own power and out of our own means to do something, to do something despite God, to do something without consulting God, to do something that we might even know God would not approve of but we’re in a good place, we’re resourced well, we’re gonna do what we want to do because we’re not clinging for dear life. We’ve lost the plot of the wilderness, which is exactly what Moses was telling the children of Israel before they came into the promised land, “do not lose the plot of the wilderness. You are utterly dependent on God no matter what. And, so, when you get into the promised land and it doesn’t look like that anymore don’t forget.” David obviously has forgotten, at least for the moment, and we are guilty of the same so many times in our lives. So, let’s think about that because the thing that we continually pray for is blessing and relief from the pressures around us, but when the pressures are relieved we no longer need to cling in utter devotion to God, we have things back under control and we…we repeat the cycle. If we could get off that train, if we could just truly finally realize we are utterly dependent on God no matter what, no matter what the circumstance. Whether the circumstances are trying or whether we just have infinite abundance, we are still utterly dependent upon God. When we lose that plot…I mean…this is one of the central plots of the Bible. Like all…what…let’s just continue to watch. We’ll see what happens to a people when they lose that plot and then we can understand what happens to us because we’re in the middle of it right now. And as we can see from the story of David when you lose that plot, really really bad things can happen.

Prayer:

Father, we don’t want to lose that aspect of the story. It’s a central deep foundational part of our story. You have created us. You are our Creator. We are dependent upon You. We are not independent of You. We need You for survival. And You have only ever been willing to Father us, yet we just act like rebellious children most of the time. So, forgive us, because it is from Your hand that all good things that have ever happened in our lives have flowed, and we have no desire to dishonor or disrespect that in any way. But we do when we…when we get lost in our own story, when we get disoriented and upside down and start believing that we have control, and we have power and if You’re not gonna come through then we’re gonna come through. And we just get this thing so upside down and it has led us to the same place, some sort of destruction of our own making in some sort of way in our lives. And, so, we’re asking for forgiveness. We’re repenting, we’re changing our mind about this type of behavior. We repent. You are our only hope. We are utterly dependent on You for everything. Help us to remember this Father, we pray. In the name of Jesus, we ask. Amen.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Hi DAB family, I’ll call myself Child of God. I’m a faithful listener since October of last year and first-time caller. I’ve begun journaling daily and logging prayer requests. Though I’ve been a Christian all my life the DAB has helped me grow so much spiritually, especially my prayer life. After hearing Momma D from Indiana’s request for prayer for healing for her marriage even after two years of petition because of being encouraged by God Smile’s story, I decided to ask the DAB family for prayers for my broken family. We live in a small rural town and our three married children with young families all live here too, serving the Lord faithfully. We have a 30-year family business. We’ve raised our family here. After our middle son finished college and joined our business conflict began plaguing us. I was constantly playing mediator in the roles of wife and mother. My husband feeling betrayed if I’d side with my son on issues. Our success has made him prideful and headstrong. Delegating the work and spending little time actually managing the business or being there yet unwilling to let go of any power and decision making. He had an affair 4 years ago, he blamed me for it, and it went on for two years. This shattered our world. My kids were our rock for me through it all. Counseling helped me but my husbands hardened heart became more hard and the relationship between him and our son became worse. Our son sought counseling, but his father refused. Our son left the business 1 year ago and now his father goes around painting him as ungrateful, unappreciative, and disloyal. Things have gotten very ugly. We’re now separated. Please pray for wisdom and direction as I navigate through this storm, for my husbands hardened heart to be softened and for my hurting children and grandchildren. Thank you.

Hey DAB family it’s His River and Rain here calling from the UK. I’ve just been listening to the 8th of May and I’ve just heard our sisters Viola’s voice and I just want to pray for her Lord. She’s a very servant, prayer-filled member of the DAB family and she’s always calling in to prayer over us, always calling in to, you know, just give her prayers and give her blessings and comfort to people, Lord. So, I just want to pray that our sister Viola and she’s such a God-filled woman, you know, spirit filled and…and everything and I just want to continue to say God just to bless her just to love on her, comfort her. She’s always praying for us all and I’m just so glad God that you’ve chosen her, you’ve chosen Viola to be part of this family, you’ve chosen her at this specific time to be with us all, to praying for us all. And God I just ask that You continue to bless her and continue to favor her, continue to just fill her with Your Holy Spirit and anything that she’s going through God cause she continues to pray for us, she continues to pray for…for, for the DAB family. I just ask that anything that she’s going through, Lord may you bless it Father God, may You heal and restore anything that she’s going through and just continue to just fill her up God so there’s, you know, less of us and, you know, less of me and more of You, less of me and more of You God in every situation. We ask the same for Viola God. We pray over her so much God and we thank You so much. And so, to sister Viola, we love you, we love you so much and I love hearing your voice, I smile every time I hear it. And I just want to give blessings and ask that God blesses you and favors you and keeps you. In Jesus’ mighty name. Amen.

Hello Daily Audio Bible family. You guys have been a huge encouragement to me just hearing everybody pray for each other. I just joined the family in late February, early March-ish and I’m play catch up. So, you guys are about a month ahead of where I am so now but I’m still hearing all the prayers and all the people who take a genuine interest in the life of their fellow Christians and…and those people hurting and…and trying to lift them up and…and I came here looking to just find a place to hear God’s word and…and I think God has brought me here to…just to soften my heart and give me a heart for others. And you guys demonstrated that so well and I want to say thank you. And…and just keep it up guys. And Have a great day.

Good morning Daily Audio Bible listeners Isaiah 66:16-20 Come and listen all you who fear God let me tell you what He has done for me. I cried out to Him with my mouth, His praise was on my tongue. If I had cherished sin in my heart the Lord would not have listened. But God has surely listened and heard my voice and prayer. Praise be to God who has not rejected my prayer or withheld His love from me. Psalm 67:1 May God be gracious to us and bless us and make His face shine upon us that our ways may be known on the earth…that Your ways Oh Lord may be known on the earth and Your salvation among all the nations. And I just want to praise God for what He has done. I had been praying for my youngest son Jordon who had gone…7 years ago had gone off on the wrong…the…the evil ways of this world. I mean he had…was bound by the enemy. And I never…my husband and I never stopped praying, we fasted, we prayed, we interceded, we always let him know that we were there for him, loved him and thank God last year he accepted Jesus all on his own through a YouTube video of a street preacher and now as of today he loves Jesus, he has surrendered his whole life. He has made King Jesus, king of his heart. He got married in February. He is having a baby and God is good. So, keep on praying for your sons and your daughters. Do not let the enemy take ‘em, you say no Satan you will not take my kids. My kids belong to God. Be like a dog on a bone, do not let go. Keep trusting in God with faith, tenacity and just keep on praying for your children. And ask God to guide you by His Spirit with what to do and how to help them in any way shape or form and pray for other believers to be placed in their life to be given the…the word of truth…

2 Samuel 9-11

David and Mephibosheth

David said, “Is there anyone still left from the house of Saul, to whom I may show kindness for the sake of Jonathan?”

There was a servant of Saul’s house named Ziba, so they summoned him to come to David.

The king said to him, “Are you Ziba?” He said, “I am.”

The king said, “Isn’t there still a man left who belongs to the house of Saul, to whom I may show the kindness of God?”

Ziba said to the king, “There is still a son of Jonathan. He has crippled feet.”

The king said to him, “Where is he?”

Ziba said to the king, “He is in the house of Makir son of Ammiel in Lo Debar.”

So King David sent and brought him from the house of Makir son of Ammiel from Lo Debar.

When Mephibosheth, the son of Saul’s son Jonathan, came to David, he bowed facedown to the ground.

David said, “Mephibosheth?” He said, “I am.”

David said to him, “Do not be afraid. I will certainly show kindness to you because of Jonathan, your father. I will return to you all the land of your grandfather Saul, and you will always eat bread at my table.”

He bowed down and said, “What is your servant that you have paid attention to a dead dog like me?”

The king called Ziba, Saul’s servant, and said to him, “Everything that belonged to Saul and to his entire house I am giving to your master’s son. 10 You are to work the soil for him, you and your sons and your servants. You are to bring in the crops, so your master’s son will have food to eat. Mephibosheth, your master’s son, will always eat bread at my table.”

(Ziba had fifteen sons and twenty servants.)

11 Ziba said to the king, “Everything that my lord the king commands his servant, your servant will do.”

So Mephibosheth began eating at the king’s table[a] like one of the king’s sons.

12 Mephibosheth had a young son named Mica. Everyone living in Ziba’s house became servants of Mephibosheth. 13 So Mephibosheth took up residence in Jerusalem because he was always to eat at the table of the king. He was crippled in both his feet.

The War With Ammon

10 After this, the king of the Ammonites died, and his son Hanun became king in his place.

David said, “I will show kindness to Hanun son of Nahash, just as his father showed kindness to me.” So David sent his officials to express condolences to Hanun concerning his father. David’s officials arrived in the land of the Ammonites.

But the officials of the Ammonites said to Hanun their master, “Do you really think David was honoring your father when he sent messengers to express his sympathy to you? No, David sent his officials to you in order to gather information about the city and to spy on it, in order to overthrow it.”

So Hanun seized the officials of David, shaved off half of each one’s beard, cut off their clothing up to their buttocks, and sent them away.

David was told about this, and he sent messengers to meet them because the men were deeply humiliated. The king said, “Stay in Jericho until your beards have grown. Then return.”

The Ammonites saw that they had become a digusting stench to David, so they sent and hired twenty thousand foot soldiers from Aram Beth Rehob and Aram Zobah, one thousand men from the king of Ma’akah, and twelve thousand men from Tob.[b]

When David heard about it, he deployed Joab and the entire army, the strong warriors.

The Ammonites went out and lined up in battle formation in front of the entrance to the city gate. Aram Zobah and Aram Rehob, as well as the men of Tob and Ma’akah, were lined up by themselves in the open country.

Joab saw that the battle lines were drawn up against him both in front of him and behind him, so he chose some of the best troops of Israel and lined them up to confront the Arameans. 10 The rest of the men he placed under the command of his brother Abishai and lined them up to face the Ammonites. 11 He said, “If Aram is too strong for me, then you are to rescue me. If the Ammonites are too strong for you, I will come to rescue you. 12 Be strong. We must show ourselves to be strong for our people and for the cities of our God. The Lord will do what is good in his eyes.”

13 Joab and all the people with him advanced to join battle against the Arameans, and the Arameans fled from him. 14 When the Ammonites saw that Aram had fled, they also fled from Abishai and entered the city. Then Joab returned from fighting against the Ammonites and came back to Jerusalem.

15 When the Arameans saw that they had been defeated by Israel, they regrouped. 16 Hadadezer sent for Arameans from beyond the Euphrates. They came to Helam with Shobak, who was the commander of the army of Hadadezer, at their head.

17 When David was informed, he gathered all Israel, crossed the Jordan, and came to Helam. The Arameans lined up to confront David and fought against him. 18 The Arameans fled from Israel. David killed seven hundred Aramean charioteers and forty thousand foot soldiers.[c] Shobak, the commander of their army, was wounded, and he died there. 19 All the kings who were the subjects of Hadadezer saw that they had been defeated by Israel, so they made peace with Israel and became subject to them. Then the Arameans were afraid to try to rescue the Ammonites anymore.

David and Bathsheba

11 Springtime arrived, the time when kings go out to war. David sent Joab out with his officers and with all Israel. They ravaged the Ammonites and besieged Rabbah. But David stayed in Jerusalem.

One evening David had gotten up from his couch and was walking around on the roof of the palace. From the roof he saw a woman bathing. The woman was very good looking. David sent to inquire about the woman, and he was told, “Isn’t this Bathsheba daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite?”

David sent messengers to bring her. She came to him, and he lay down with her. (She had been purifying herself from her ceremonial uncleanness.)[d] She then returned to her house.

The woman became pregnant, so she sent a message and told David, “I am pregnant.”

David sent a message to Joab, “Send Uriah the Hittite to me.” So Joab sent Uriah to David, and Uriah came to him.

David asked how Joab and the troops were doing, and how the war effort was going. Then David said to Uriah, “Go down to your house and wash your feet.”

When Uriah went out from the palace, the king sent a gift to him. But Uriah slept at the entrance to the palace with all the servants of his master. He did not go down to his own house.

10 David was informed, “Uriah has not gone down to his house.” So David said to Uriah, “Haven’t you come a long distance? Why didn’t you go down to your house?”

11 Uriah said to David, “The ark and Israel and Judah are living in shelters, and my master Joab and the servants of my master are camped on the bare ground in the open countryside. Should I go to my house to eat and to drink and to lie down with my wife? By your life, as surely as you live, I will not do such a thing.”

12 Then David said to Uriah, “Stay here today also. Tomorrow I will send you back.” So Uriah remained in Jerusalem that day and the next. 13 David summoned him, and Uriah ate as his guest, and David got him drunk. But in the evening he went and slept on his mat where the servants of his master were. He did not go to his own house.

14 In the morning David wrote a letter to Joab, and he sent it in the hands of Uriah. 15 In the letter he wrote, “Station Uriah opposite the fiercest fighting. Then withdraw from behind him so that he will be struck down and die.”

16 So when Joab was besieging the city, he assigned Uriah to a place where he knew that the enemy’s strongest warriors were. 17 The men of the city came out and fought against Joab, and some of the troops of David fell. Uriah the Hittite also died.

18 Joab sent a message to inform David about all the events of the war. 19 He instructed the messenger, “As you are finishing reporting all the events of the war to the king, 20 if the king becomes angry and says to you, ‘Why did you go so close to the city to fight? Didn’t you know that they would be shooting from on top of the wall? 21 Who killed Abimelek son of Jerubbesheth?[e] Didn’t a woman throw an upper millstone from the wall on him, so that he died at Thebez? Why did you go so close to the wall?’ Then you are to say, ‘Your servant Uriah the Hittite also died.’”

22 The messenger set out. He came and told David everything that Joab had sent him to say. 23 The messenger said to David, “Their men gained an advantage over us and drove us back into the open country. But then we gained the upper hand and drove them back all the way to the entrance of the city gate. 24 The archers shot at your troops from the wall. Some of the servants of the king died. And your servant Uriah the Hittite also died.”

25 David told the messenger, “Say this to Joab: ‘Do not take this too hard, because the sword devours people at random. Strengthen your attack against the city, and overthrow it.’ Encourage Joab.”

26 The wife of Uriah the Hittite heard that her husband was dead, so she mourned for her husband. 27 When her mourning was completed, David sent for her and brought her to his house, and she became his wife. She gave birth to a son for him. But what David had done was evil in the eyes of the Lord.

Footnotes:

  1. 2 Samuel 9:11 The ancient versions read the king’s table. This reading makes this a narrative sentence outside the quotation marks. The Hebrew text reads my table, but Mephibosheth would not be eating at Ziba’s table. If the reading my table is adopted, verse 11b must be spoken by David. David said, “Mephibosheth will eat at my table as one of the king’s sons.”
  2. 2 Samuel 10:6 Or from Ish Tob
  3. 2 Samuel 10:18 The Hebrew text reads seven hundred chariots and forty thousand charioteers or horsemen. However, 1 Chronicles 19:18 states that David killed seven thousand charioteers and forty thousand foot soldiers. The reading foot soldiers, which is also supported by some Greek manuscripts, is followed above.
  4. 2 Samuel 11:4 That Bathsheba was purifying herself after her period shows that the child was David’s and that David and Bathsheba were more careful about keeping pure from the ceremonial contamination caused by contact with blood than they were about keeping pure from the moral pollution caused by adultery.
  5. 2 Samuel 11:21 The Greek and the Latin Old Testament read Jerubbaal, which is another name for Gideon. The Hebrew text of Samuel regularly replaces the word -baal with a form of the Hebrew word for shame (bosheth) when -baal occurs as part of a personal name.

John 15

No Greater Love—in Good Fruit

15 “I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener.[a] Every branch in me that does not bear fruit, he is going to cut off. And he prunes every branch that does bear fruit, so that it will bear more fruit.

“You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you. Remain in me, and I am going to remain in you. A branch cannot bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Likewise, you cannot bear fruit unless you remain in me.

“I am the Vine; you are the branches. The one who remains in me and I in him is the one who bears much fruit, because without me you can do nothing. If anyone does not remain in me, he is thrown away like a branch and withers. Such branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned. If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. My Father is glorified by this: that you continue to bear much fruit and prove to be[b] my disciples.

“As the Father has loved me, so also I have loved you. Remain in my love. 10 If you hold on to my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have held on to my Father’s commands and remain in his love. 11 I have told you these things so that my joy would continue to be in you and that your joy would be complete.

12 “This is my command: Love one another as I have loved you. 13 No one has greater love than this: that someone lays down his life for his friends. 14 You are my friends if you continue to do the things I instruct you. 15 I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know what his master is doing. But I have called you friends, because everything that I heard from my Father, I have made known to you. 16 You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit, fruit that will endure, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask in my name. 17 These things I am instructing you, so that you love one another.

18 “If the world hates you, you know that it hated me first. 19 If you were of the world, the world would love its own. However, because you are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of it, for that very reason the world hates you. 20 Remember the saying I told you: ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted me, they will persecute you too. If they held on to my word, they will hold on to yours as well. 21 But they will do all these things to you on account of my name, because they do not know the one who sent me. 22 If I had not come and spoken to them, they would have no sin. But now they have no excuse for their sin. 23 The one who hates me also hates my Father. 24 If I had not done the works among them that no one else did, they would not be guilty of sin. But now they have seen and hated both me and my Father. 25 This was to fulfill the word which is written in their Law: ‘They hated me for no reason.’[c]

26 “When the Counselor comes, whom I will send to you from the Father—the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father—he will testify about me. 27 And you also are going to testify, because you have been with me from the beginning.”

Psalm 119:49-64

Zayin: Comfort in Suffering

49 Remember your word to your servant,
because you have given me hope.
50 This is my comfort in my suffering:
that your saying gives me life.
51 The arrogant mock me constantly,
but I do not fall away from your law.
52 I remember your judgments from of old, Lord,
and I comfort myself with them.
53 Indignation grips me because of the wicked, who forsake your laws.
54 Your statutes are songs for me in the house where I am staying.
55 I remember your name during the night, O Lord,
and I will keep your laws.
56 This I have done: I guard your precepts.

Ḥet: I Will Not Forget

57 You are my portion, O Lord.
I said I would keep your words.
58 I have sought your favor with all my heart.
Be gracious to me according to your sayings.
59 I have considered my ways,[a]
and I have turned my feet to your testimonies.
60 I will hurry. I will not delay.
I will keep your commandments.
61 The ropes of the wicked bind me,
but I do not forget your law.
62 At midnight I rise to give you thanks for your righteous judgments.
63 I am a companion to all who fear you,
that is, to all who keep your precepts.
64 Your mercy, Lord, fills the earth.
Teach me your statutes.

More Advice for a Wise Son

16 A person may have thought things through in his heart,
but an apt answer from his tongue comes from the Lord.
All of a person’s ways are pure in his own eyes,
but the Lord weighs motives.
Commit what you do to the Lord,
and your plans will be established.

2 Samuel 7:1-8:18, John 14:15-31, Psalm 119:33-48, Proverbs 15:33

Today is the 25th day of May welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I’m Brian it is wonderful to be here with you today as we…as we lock in and buckle up and do what we do every day, take the next step forward on the journey that we have embarked on through the scriptures this year. And I guess we’re moved into 2 Samuel by now since we’re moving into chapter 7, but we’ve probably got the lay of the land. 2 Samuel is dealing with the life of David, whereas 1 Samuel was dealing with the life of Saul. And as we’re dealing with both of these people there are sharp contrasts, and we can find things about ourselves in both of these men. And now we’re focusing on David who is king of all Israel at this point and is Israel’s 2nd king. And, so, we pick up the story in Samuel chapters 7 and 8.

Commentary:

Okay. So, through the course of our year so far and even recently we’ve talked about the boxes that get made to stuff God in so that we can have a better understanding of God but He’s bigger than the box and He won’t fit in the box. And, so, that kinda…kinda gets us disgruntled and we can’t figure out mystery. So, we’ve talked about these kinds of things that bring us tension on our journey of faith. We actually have a real God box described today in the Old Testament in the book of 2 Samuel. David is now firmly established as “the” king of Israel. There are now rivals, he is the king, and he has used that kingdom to subdue the enemies all around him so that there’s respect and peace around the nation. And David has had a very nice palace built and gifted to him. And, so, he lives in this nice palace. Basically, he’s able to slow down a little bit and look around that all that he has and all that he’s in control of and he has this rev…revelation, this sort of realization that his nation is in good shape, he’s in good shape, he has everything he could dream of but…but God, the Lord God who made all this possible still lives in the same tent that He’s been living in, the tabernacle, since…since the time of Moses. And, so, actually from a good place in David’s heart he’s thinking, you know, he’s making this comparison and thinking “I have it better than God. Like, I have been blessed with so much here and then the Lord is living in a tent and we need to make God a spectacular home to live in. This box, this walled in area, this temple for God to live in.” And David shares that with the Prophet Nathan who’s like, “yeah, if that’s in your heart than do what’s in your heart.” But that wasn’t what was in God’s heart. That’s the thing. And, so, God’s speaks to Nathan who then comes back to David and this is where we get this…this kind of God box description. Through Nathan the prophet, God says to David, “are you the one to build a house for me to live in? I have not lived in a house from the day I brought the people of Israel up out of Egypt until today. I have been moving around in the tent and the dwelling. I have traveled everywhere with all the people of Israel. Did I ever speak a word to any of the judges of Israel whom I commanded to shepherd my people or ask them, ‘why have you not built a house of cedar for me?’” I think this is really interesting because what God is saying is, “you know, you’re not gonna put Me in a box. I am out and among the people where I have always been. Everywhere you’ve gone I’ve gone with you and led you. That’s how this works.” Now as we know, Solomon, David’s son, the next king who we haven’t met yet, he will be given permission to build a permanent temple. And he actually will bring Israel to its finest…finest hour. But it’s interesting to just sit there and look at David, look at what he might be thinking realizing how blessed he is, how fortunate. I mean he has had his share of struggle. So…and so there is no way that he can’t appreciate where he is now. Running…he was running for his life from cave to cave and now he’s the king. And he knows that this only happened at the hand of God. And he looks around at all he has and in his good heart wants to build something even bigger for God. And isn’t that kind of what we do? Like God has blessed me and I need to build something big for God and we start thinking along those lines. And man, it gets mixed motive.…our motives get mixed really, really quick. Cause we’re gonna build this big thing and people are gonna see us build this big thing and so we’re gonna get the notoriety and the performance value for building this big thing for God. And maybe God doesn’t want that thing built. Maybe He’s just fine being out and among the people. What exactly would we conceive of building for God that just on the face of it is gonna be so impressive that God becomes speechless? I’m mean we’re talking about the Being who spoke the world into existence. So, what are we going to build for God? That really, really checks our…our motivations. That really, really checks why we would try to do some of the things that we try to do. What we ultimately find out as we continue the journey through the…the bible is that we are the temple of God and God indwells us and is everywhere that people are, He’s within us and among us and hovering around us. So, He doesn’t really need the box. It’s we…we seek out the box so we can say, “there…there is God, that’s where God is, that’s what God does, that’s what God does not do. Whatever is not in that box is not of God.” So, what if we were to start realizing that we are that temple, that box, if we want to call it that? Are we open? Are we surrendered? Like are…are we available or are we a closed box and we just tell God who He is and what He does and doesn’t do all the time? We just quote scriptures back to Him like He’s forgotten or never really even knew what was in the bible. And we sing worship songs that describe for Him who He is as if He doesn’t know anymore. What kind of freedom would there actually be if we let go of all of that and said God is God, which is well, well, well beyond any possibility of my human understanding? Like, all of eternity, a billion, billion years from now I will still be learning new things about the Lord. So, I…I do not know what I think that I know. What kind of freedom would there be in just believing in faith that He loves us profoundly and wants to draw near and we don’t have to come up with a formula for that, we just have to draw near back? Think of the freedom in that, the freedom of being in a loving relationship. Let’s live into that today.

Prayer:

Holy Spirit come. We are so often trying to become aware of Your presence through our intellect when You remain beyond anything that we can conceive of. We only see glimpses and…and they’re so good that we want more, but it’s You who comes in Your kindness and graciousness to be among us. So, we want to experience You for who You are in the gentle, unhurried way of…of actual love, of actual relationship instead of us running around thinking of what we need to do to impress You or what we need to do to impress everybody else so it can seem as if we’re closer to You. We don’t need any of that. We just need intimacy with You. There’s nothing else that our heart…like this is what our hearts truly crave, and we fill it with all kinds of other stuff. And, so, forgive us for, even though we’re the temple of being a closed box that simply tries to control You. We pray this in the mighty name of Jesus. Amen.

Announcements:

dailyaudiobible.com, that’s home base, and that’s how to get connected and stay connected and find out what’s happening around here. So, check that out. If you’re using the Daily Audio Bible app you can access all of these things from there. There is a Drawer icon in the upper left-hand corner of the app and you hit that, and it pops open a drawer.

And, so, you can access things like the Community section, which is where the Prayer Wall lives as well as the Daily Audio Bible Shop where there are resources there for this journey. All kinds of stuff. We have the Daily Audio Bible journal in the Shop that we’ve developed over the years to be the perfect size to carry around. Like, it’s just the…the “the” journal that we’re using around here to journal in. Things to write in like the Black Wing pencil line. I love journaling with a pencil. That’s been going on for several years now. Everybody has their own preference but it’s a little old school to have a really great pencil and sharpen that pencil and write in your own hand, old school, in your own penmanship no matter how bad it might be, to say things. And I’ve journaled digitally in my life, I’ve done that, it’s just a different kind of process than just sitting down, sharpening a pencil and just kind of allowing what’s in your heart, what’s in your mind to flow out onto the page. It’s really, really helpful and the precedent is very much in the bible. We’re continually instructed to remember, remember what happened here, don’t forget God’s faithfulness and…and when we’re pouring that out on the page in our own hand it sure is nice to go back when things get foggy and it seems very unclear, to be able to go back and see, yeah, that thread is true. God has always been here and has always been faithful. And we begin to tell the story back to ourselves as we read through our journal. And it’s an incredible thing. So, stuff like that, resources like that are in the Daily Audio Bible Shop. So, check that out.

If you want to partner with the Daily Audio Bible you can do that at dailyaudiobible.com as well. And I can’t thank you enough other than to say what I say on a regular basis. This wouldn’t be happening if we weren’t in this together. That’s just a fact. And, so, I’m humbled and awed and grateful that we are on this journey and have been on this journey for these years. And I thank you with all of my heart for your partnership. So, yeah, there’s a link on the homepage. If you’re using the app, you can press the Give button in the upper right-hand corner or the mailing address is P.O. Box 1996 Spring Hill, Tennessee 37174.

And as always if you have a prayer request or encouragement you can hit that Hotline button in the app, the little red button up at the top, you can’t miss it or you can dial 877-942-4253.

And that’s it for today. I’m Brian I love you and I’ll be waiting for you here, tomorrow.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Hi, good morning this is D from New York. I’m about a four-year listener and second time caller. My first call was early March when I, my husband, and my son were sick with COVID. And, so, this is a praise report to say that we’ve all recovered very well. Thank God and thank you for your prayers, especially Randal’s who I heard a couple of days after I recorded my prayer request. I’m also calling for Mom Tries. I just heard her prayer request. Congratulations on becoming a pro athlete, a pro triathlete. I totally understand the jitters and the nerves that you may be experiencing or maybe not quite since I’m not a pro athlete. I am a 66, 67-time marathoner, a novice triathlete and as an indoor athlete I totally understand, and I get it. And I pray that you perform well this weekend at that full Iron Man and know that all things, you can do all things through Christ who strengthens you. I’d like you to give us peace feedback and let us know how it went. Praying for you girl. You’re going to do wonderfully. Bye-bye.

Good morning DAB family this is Laura from Eugene, Oregon. I’m just calling in with a grateful heart this morning as I’m listening to the reading, as I listen to Brian’s commentary, to the prayer requests and the prayers being lifted up. Thank you each one of you. I am so so grateful to be a part of this Daily Audio Bible community. I just wanted to share an answered prayer. I called in a while back with a prayer request from my son’s mental health. He was really in a bad place and it’s always concerning with him and he is such in a better place now. Prayer is powerful. So, thank you. I just pray now that he can come to know the Lord again. He accepted the Lord as a child but he’s far away now. So, that’s where that true healing can happen. So, I just am praying and asking you to pray with me for his return to the Lord. His name is Andrew. And then I’m also asking prayer for my mom Alice who just received a cancer diagnosis this week. It was very unexpected, and we’re all in a little bit of shock and not knowing where to go next. So, of course we are turning to the Lord and I’m asking you for prayer for healing and for wisdom and discernment as we go forward and navigate this whole situation. Thank you DAB family. I am so grateful for each one of you and I love to pray for you. It’s my honor.

Hello this is Gods Tree From Many Branches But I Am Rooted in the Word of God. I’m calling because I feel like I needed to give some words of encouragement. About two years ago I called DAB desperate, crying, and upset because I got an announcement that my brother was suicidal, and the police were looking for him and everybody was looking for him and we didn’t know where he was, and I called you all immediately to start praying immediately for my brother. Praise God, we found him, and they were able to get him help, and he was… he had a total breakdown. He went through a total mental break, but God was able to restore him and get him to counseling he need and get him back on track. And it’s been two years later, and he is living happily. He is in love with the Lord, he is trusting God for everything in his life. He still has a lot of things that he needs to straighten out in his life, and he still beats himself up for things that he’s done but he knows God has given him grace and giving him mercy. And he has found joy and he’s found a purpose in life. And I wanted to give this encouragement to those who are struggling right now in dealing with depression and even suicidal thoughts. Bind the enemy and rebuke him in the name of Jesus because there is happiness after the darkness. You will find joy after weeping all night long. God is an awesome God, and He is the Keeper and I just want you to trust Him and believe it’s going to get better, take it from me. In Jesus’ name, I do pray for you. Amen.

Hi this is Victorious Soldier just calling pray for some of the DABbers. I want to pray for…for Keith and Grace the lady with her husband and her who was having some challenges. Thank God for bringing you aboard and thank God for giving you some wonderful insight into His word. I wanna pray for Paperclip and Allison’s son. It’s so good to hear that. I didn’t realize you had a son. Thank God that you’re free and thank God that you’re there and just stay in the word. We’d love to hear from you. Tell Allison Shalom, Shalom. I wanna say, Shannon from Salem, praying for you in your classes, that suicide prevention is great. Prayerfully, with all the depression and everything that somebody will latch on and see that life is worth living and God would give ’em joy. Gracious Father we just lift you up. We praise you for the DABbers, we praise you for the light. I want to pray also for those who have lost their mothers or lost their fathers or are going through with their children with the depression and everything that’s going on Lord, we just ask You the names I call and the ones that are going through with the depression the one that’s going through with the COVID. Lord, we just ask You to have Your way. We thank You for our brother over…overseas who is doing better. We just lift you up. We praise Your name, Lord we just ask You to touch as only You can do. We ask You to speak the word Lord. We ask You to…to connect with them and let them feel You that You are there and I’m recognizing and acknowledge You that you can direct their path…

2 Samuel 7-8

The Lord’s Messianic Covenant With David

It happened that when the king was living in his palace, and when the Lord had given him rest from his enemies all around, the king said to Nathan the prophet, “Look, I live in a house of cedar, but the Ark of God sits under tent curtains.”

Nathan said to the king, “Go and do everything that is in your heart, because the Lord is with you.”

But that night the word of the Lord came to Nathan. He said, “Go and tell my servant David all these things.”

The Covenant

This is what the Lord says. Are you the one to build a house for me to live in? I have not lived in a house from the day I brought the people of Israel up from Egypt until today. I have been moving around in the Tent and the Dwelling. I have traveled everywhere with all the people of Israel. Did I ever speak a word to any of the judges[a] of Israel, whom I commanded to shepherd my people, or ask them, “Why have you not built a house of cedar for me?”

You are also to say the following to my servant David.

This is what the Lord of Armies says. I took you from the pasture, from following sheep, to be ruler over my people, over Israel. I have been with you wherever you went. I have cut off all your enemies from before you. I will make your reputation great, like that of the great ones on the earth. 10 I will set up a place for my people Israel, and I will plant them there. They will dwell there, and they will not be disturbed again. Violent men will not afflict them again as they did at the beginning 11 and ever since the day I appointed judges over my people Israel. I will give you rest from all your enemies.

The Lord also declares to you that the Lord himself will make a house for you. 12 When your days are complete and you rest with your fathers, I will raise up after you your seed,[b] who will come from your own body. I will establish his kingdom. 13 He will build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. 14 I will be his father, and he will be my son. When he sins, I will discipline him with a rod used by men and with blows of the sons of men. 15 My faithful mercy will not depart from him as I removed it from Saul, whom I removed to make room for you. 16 Your house will stand firm, and your kingdom will endure forever before you.[c] Your throne will be established forever.

17 Nathan told David all the words that had been revealed in this vision.

David’s Response to the Covenant

18 Then King David went and sat before the Lord and said:

Who am I, Lord God? And what is my house that you have brought me to this point? 19 Yet this was a small thing in your eyes, Lord God. You have also spoken about the house of your servant for a long time into the future. Is this the law for the man, Lord God?[d]

20 What more can David say to you? You know your servant, Lord God. 21 Because of your word and according to the plan of your heart, you have carried out this great thing in order to make your servant aware of it. 22 Therefore, you are great, Lord God, because there is none like you. There is no God except you, in keeping with everything we have heard with our ears.

23 Who is like your people Israel, the one people on earth whom God went out to redeem for himself, to make them his people and to make a name for himself? You yourself did great and awe-inspiring things for your land in the presence of your people, whom you redeemed for yourself from Egypt, in the presence of the nations and their gods.[e] 24 You established your people Israel for yourself to be your people forever. You, Lord, became their God.

25 Now, Lord God, confirm forever the word that you have spoken concerning your servant and concerning his house, and do as you have spoken. 26 Your name will be great forever. People will say, “The Lord of Armies is God over Israel.” The house of your servant David will be established before you.

27 You, Lord of Armies, the God of Israel, have whispered into the ear[f] of your servant, saying, “I will build a house for you.” Therefore, your servant has found the heart to pray to you this prayer. 28 Now, Lord God, you are God. Your words are truth. You have promised this good thing to your servant. 29 Now, therefore, please bless the house of your servant, so that it will endure forever in your presence. For you, Lord God, have spoken. With your blessing the house of your servant will be blessed forever.

David’s Wars

After this, David defeated the Philistines and subdued them. David took Metheg Ha’ammah[g] from the control of the Philistines.

He defeated Moab and measured the men with a length of rope after making them lie down on the ground. He measured two lengths to be put to death and one full length to live. The Moabites became subject to David and brought tribute.

David also defeated Hadadezer son of Rehob, king of Zobah, when he went to restore his control[h] at the river Euphrates. David captured seventeen hundred charioteers and twenty thousand foot soldiers[i] from him. David hamstrung all the chariot horses, but he left enough horses for a hundred chariots. Arameans from Damascus came to help Hadadezer king of Zobah, but David killed twenty-two thousand men in Aram. Then David put garrisons in Damascus in the land of Aram,[j] and the Arameans became subject to David and brought tribute.

The Lord gave victory to David everywhere he went.

David took the gold shields that belonged to the officials of Hadadezer and brought them to Jerusalem. From Betah and Berothai,[k] cities of Hadadezer, King David took large amounts of bronze.

Toi[l] king of Hamath heard that David had defeated the entire army of Hadadezer. 10 So Toi sent his son Joram[m] to King David to petition him for peace and to bless him because he had fought against Hadadezer and defeated him, because Toi had been at war with Hadadezer. In his hand he brought items made of silver and items of gold and items of bronze.

11 King David dedicated these things to the Lord along with the silver and gold that he had dedicated from all the nations he had subdued: 12 from Aram, Moab, the Ammonites, the Philistines, from Amalek, and from the spoils of Hadadezer son of Rehob, king of Zobah.

13 David made a name for himself when he returned from striking eighteen thousand Edomites[n] in the Valley of Salt. 14 He put garrisons in Edom, in all of it, and all the Edomites became subject to David.

The Lord gave victory to David wherever he went. 15 David was king over all Israel, and he treated all his people with justice and fairness.

David’s Officials

16 Joab son of Zeruiah was over the army. Jehoshaphat son of Ahilud was the record keeper.[o] 17 Zadok son of Ahitub and Ahimelek son of Abiathar were priests. Seraiah was the secretary. 18 Benaiah son of Jehoiada was in charge of the Kerethites and the Pelethites. The sons of David were government ministers.[p]

Footnotes:

  1. 2 Samuel 7:7 The translation follows the parallel reading in 1 Chronicles 17:6. Here the Hebrew reads tribes. In Hebrew script the words for tribes and judges look almost identical.
  2. 2 Samuel 7:12 Or your offspring or your descendent. The literal term seed is retained to point out the continuity of the messianic promises from Eve, through Abraham, David, and the kings of Judah, until they reach their fulfillment in Christ, the Seed of the Woman. To agree with the singular noun seed, the pronouns are singular throughout (he not they).
  3. 2 Samuel 7:16 The reading before you is the reading of the main Hebrew text. A few Hebrew manuscripts and the Greek Old Testament read before me.
  4. 2 Samuel 7:19 Literally this law of the man, Adonai Yahweh. This statement is cryptic, and the meaning is much debated. Most translations take it to mean something like Is this your usual way of dealing with mankind, Lord God? Martin Luther understood it to be a direct reference to Christ: This is the way of the Man (adam), who is the Lord God. Compare 1 Chronicles 17:17.
  5. 2 Samuel 7:23 The word order and agreement of the nouns in this verse is unusual and requires some rearranging in English.
  6. 2 Samuel 7:27 Or revealed into the ear. Literally you have uncovered the ear.
  7. 2 Samuel 8:1 This name, which may mean bridle of the mother city, seems to be a name for Gath. See 1 Chronicles 18:1.
  8. 2 Samuel 8:3 Literally his hand. The Hebrew word for hand can also mean monument.
  9. 2 Samuel 8:4 In 1 Chronicles 18:4 different statistics are reported.
  10. 2 Samuel 8:6 The land of Aram and the Aramean kingdoms occupied the territory of present-day Syria.
  11. 2 Samuel 8:8 The parallel in 1 Chronicles 18:8 has different names for these cities.
  12. 2 Samuel 8:9 Also called Tou in 1 Chronicles 18
  13. 2 Samuel 8:10 Also called Hadoram in 1 Chronicles 18:10
  14. 2 Samuel 8:13 The translation Edomites follows the reading of a few Hebrew manuscripts and some ancient versions. Most Hebrew manuscripts have the reading Arameans. In Hebrew script Edom and Aram look almost alike. The parallel text in 1 Chronicles 18:12 also identifies these enemies as Edomites.
  15. 2 Samuel 8:16 This official also served as a spokesman and chief of protocol. Like the secretary, he was the equivalent of a cabinet-level official.
  16. 2 Samuel 8:18 The Hebrew word cohen usually means priest, that is, a spiritual minister. David’s sons could not legitimately serve as priests since they were not Levites, so the term ministers here must be used in the European sense, to refer to ministers of state. In 1 Chronicles 18:17 these officials are called chief advisors at the side of the king.

John 14:15-31

15 “If you love me, hold on to[a] my commands. 16 I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever. 17 He is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive because it does not see him or know him. You know him because he stays with you and will be in you.

18 “I will not leave you as orphans; I am coming to you. 19 In a little while the world will see me no longer, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live. 20 In that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you. 21 The one who has my commands and holds on to them is the one who loves me. And the one who loves me will be loved by my Father. I too will love him and show myself to him.”

22 Judas (not Iscariot) said to him, “Lord, what has happened that you are going to show yourself to us and not to the world?”

23 Jesus answered him, “If anyone loves me, he will hold on to my word. My Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him. 24 The one who does not love me does not hold on to my words. The word that you are hearing is not mine, but it is from the Father who sent me.

25 “I have told you these things while staying with you. 26 But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and remind you of everything I told you.

27 “Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Do not let your heart be troubled, and do not let it be afraid. 28 You heard me tell you, ‘I am going away and I am coming to you.’ If you loved me, you would be glad that I am going to the Father, because the Father is greater than I.

29 “I have told you now before it happens so that, when it does happen, you may believe. 30 I will not speak with you much longer, because the ruler of this world is coming. He has no power over me. 31 But I want the world to know that I love the Father and that I am doing exactly what the Father has instructed me.

“Get up. Let’s leave this place.”

Psalm 119:33-48

He: That You May Be Feared

33 Teach me, O Lord, the way of your statutes.
Then I will guard it to the end.
34 Give me understanding, and I will guard your law.
I will keep it with all my heart.
35 Make me walk on the path of your commandments,
for I take pleasure in it.
36 Direct my heart toward your testimonies
and not toward material gain.
37 Keep my eyes from looking at worthless things.
Give me life according to your ways.[a]
38 Confirm your sayings to your servant,
so that you may be feared.
39 Take away my disgrace which I dread,
for your judgments are good.
40 How I long for your precepts!
Give me life in your righteousness.

Vav: Speak Before Kings

41 So let your mercies come to me, O Lord,
and let your salvation come according to your sayings.
42 Then I will give an answer to those who insult me,
because I trust in your words.
43 But do not tear away the word of truth from my mouth,
because I wait confidently for your judgments.
44 Then I will continually keep your law forever and ever.
45 Then I will walk around freely,
because I have sought your precepts.
46 Then I will speak of your testimonies before kings,
and I will not be put to shame.
47 For I delight in your commandments, which I love.
48 I lift up my hands to your commandments, which I love,
and I meditate on your statutes.

2 Samuel 4:1-6:23, John 13:31-14:14, Psalm 119:17-32, Proverbs 15:31-32

Today is the 24th day of May welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I am Brian it is great to be here with you every day, every day it’s great to be here around this Global Campfire with you. Everyday there’s something new, another step out in front of us. And so, let’s dive into that, take that next step forward which…which will lead us back into the book of 2 Samuel where we are observing David. And, we’ll talk about this a little bit at the end but David and Saul, like we’ve had 1 Samuel to compare Saul and 2 Samuel to take a look at David and their very different people and have very different character. So, let’s continue with the story of David; 2 Samuel 4, 5 and 6 today.

Commentary:

Okay, we have a few things to talk about and catch up on. If we…if we first start in the book of 2 Samuel, David is now the king of all Israel so this is now Israel’s second king David and that’s how it will be from this point forward. But as we watched the whole story unfold this is interesting how we can know David is a kind of Israel maybe we know he’s the second king of Israel but we think Saul dies and David becomes king. As we can see that’s not exactly how…I mean this is a new nation and so they have ways of doing things. And so, we had Ishbosheth, we had 2 kings basically. We had Ishbosheth the son of Saul, king of Israel, except for Judah. Judah had already voiced anointed David to be the king of the tribe. And then eventually the rest of the tribes come and…and enter into a covenant with David to be their king. They’re watching David, like, that’s in the narrative so it’s not like we’re speculating here, they’re watching David. It’s very, very interesting because it wouldn’t have been a secret that Saul was hunting for David. And it wouldn’t had been a particularly a…a top national secret that David had eventually defected and become a Philistine to keep him…to stay alive. So, when Saul dies then it’s not gonna be just well David by default is the next king. He…he has defected to the Philistines, he’s in Ziklag and there would need to be consideration about did David have any involvements in Saul’s death because Saul certainly wanted David dead. So, did David finally get a chance at like…is David involved, like what’s going on here? And what we see is David in every way be honorable and very, very much protect the office, like the office of the king. We might call this like protecting the reputation of the crown or something like that in this day-and-age. So, I mean this started with the announcement that Saul was dead, right, when David found out Saul was dead and he had inquiries of this man who had come all the way from the battle lines down to Ziklag to inform David that he had killed King Saul. King Saul had asked to be killed and he did it. Everybody’s watching this and David’s like how dare you touch the Lord’s anointed in that person lost their life. There were a couple of other high-profile incidents like that, that the people really were looking at David’s character and he…he, he probably didn’t know that he was being tested he just did what he thought was right but it pleased the people. So, there was this man named Abner. Abner was like, the leader of Saul’s armies. So, he’s like the chief in command of the military. David had a similar counterpart, his name was Joab, and they all knew each other. They had all served together right? David was in Saul’s army and he had led the Army. These people all knew each other. And I think it was in yesterday’s reading right, we had this meeting of the armies. It was like gonna be twelve people against twelve people but all twenty-four people died instantly in that battle and so a real battle ensued. So, there’s a brother of Joab of David’s military general whose chasing down Abner whose Saul’s military general. He’s chasing him down and they know each other so even as they’re like even as Abner’s fleeing, he’s talking to Asahel who is chasing him like, go after somebody else, don’t chase me, don’t make me strike you down, this is, I don’t want to hurt you. But Asahel wouldn’t…wouldn’t listen and he, Abner killed him. He had to kill him. Well now, Joab has lost a brother in battle and so he’s got a blood vendetta against Abner and when the opportunity arises and it ironically arises when Abner comes to see David and tells him I can deliver the rest of the tribes under your kingship. So…so Joab finds out about this and calls Abner and kills Abner. Everybody’s watching David, did David kill Abner? Now the king’s dead, now this general, this powerful military general whose backing Ishbosheth as king now he’s dead. Did David have anything to do with it? But David didn’t have anything to do with any of these things and so the way he mourns, the way he brings justice, the way he grieves, the way he writes his songs, the people are watching all this and they realize, nope, this is not a long running conspiracy. Because they would have had these conspiracy theories from Saul. And so, they would have wondered what David was up to but they keep watching systematically David behaving ethically and they’re realizing there never was a conspiracy against the king. And they put their trust in David. And then Ishbosheth who’s the other king, he gets assassinated today, right. Baanah and Rechab, these Benjaminites, they come and they bring Ishbosheth’s head to David. And David, once again, the people are watching and he’s like, you think this is good news? It’s not good news to bring me the severed head of a king. That was the Lord’s, like, who are you to make these life and death decisions? And those men lost their lives. David is showing that the office of the king is the anointed of God and that matters no matter who’s in that seat. And since he’s in that seat he’s going to honor it and act honorable toward it and the people that he’s being put in charge of that he is to become the shepherd over. So, all these little things, so different, such different leadership styles, such different character, then what we observed when we were observing Saul. And as we continue to watch David we’ll continue to learn things about ourselves just like we did with Saul.

Okay, then we turn into the New Testament and into the book of John and it’s a…a super pivotal what’s going on in the book of John. We’re at the Last Supper for the last time of this year. Like, we’ve been kind of talking about as we’ve moved here, we’re…we’re getting to the end of the gospels. And in this Last Supper Jesus…Jesus does something that kings don’t do, ever. Jesus got down on His knees in front of His friends and He didn’t just get down on His knees, He got down on His knees and He washed their feet, their filthy, stinking feet. And this was like a live, living example, the King of Kings and Lord of Lords, the Commander of Heaven’s Armies on His knees before His friends, washing them clean. This is one of the last acts that Jesus does of His own accord. Like, He’s free right now. So, He’s down on His knees washing His friends’ feet instead of running for His life into the night. He’s doing this willingly. This would have been indelible. How do you ever forget something like that? The more you thought of it the more meaningful it would be, especially after everything that happened afterward. And Jesus says, and can we listen to this, like we’re not, we’re not gonna really be hearing this again. A new commandment I give you; love one another just as I have loved you. So also, you are to love one another by this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another. It’s self-explanatory, I don’t know what I can say, like I can’t make that make more sense. I also just can’t figure out why it’s so hard to see this in practice among God’s people. Like, why are we so committed to fighting each other over doctrine and dogma? Why are we so willing to say such hateful things to each other whether on the internet or in person? Why are we even willing to participate in anything even near that? A new commandment I give you; a commandment. Love one another, you are commanded, I am commanded. If we’re going to follow Jesus we must obey His commandments. And we are commanded to love one another. Not just love one another, love each other like Jesus loved us. That’s the way we’re to love one another. Because everyone will know that we’re the disciples of the Savior if we have love for one another. So, I wonder, you know, is the reverse then true; don’t love one another and everyone will know that you are not my disciples, if you don’t have love for one another? If we could at least give that some thought today as we observe the things that we’re saying and doing.

Prayer:

And so, Jesus, Jesus come into this. It…It’s a struggle. I mean we can put on a facade and go into the world and fake it but to really love one another like You loved us, that’s not something that can be faked. That’s something that’s gotta be cultivated and grown. That only happens through our own surrender of our own rights and our own wrongs. So, help us Jesus to walk Your paths; surrender our rights and wrongs to You. That we might be known by our love. We ask this in Your precious name. Amen.

And that those who are struggling right now Lord they would reach out to a crisis line or to a doctor, to the people they…that around them that care about them and that they would be able to have strength to call the right people for that person that assistance in loving care thank you. Jesus name, have a good day guys.

Hi everybody this is Salvation is Mine in San Angelo, California. I know it’s been a while since I’ve been on the Prayer Line and I want to say that I hope everyone is doing well. 2020 was a very hard year and 2021 we’re still in the throes of it but God will see us through. I wanted to request prayers for my family and my extended family as well. My mom went home this morning which is May 20, 2021. She went in her sleep. She was just a few days shy of her 102nd birthday. But God decided to call her home and I know she’s in a better place than being down here in pain and in suffering. So, I wanted to send that request out and also pray for everyone else that’s going through a death, any kind of loss at the moment that we continue to lift them all up in prayer because we never know what kind of pain and suffering they may be going through. Anyways thank you DAB family, take care, God bless and I’ll …

It is incredible and you’re just a strong woman. There was also a woman who called in from Texas, just a grandmother. I just want you to know that I am praying for you and for your 15-year-old grandson. I just had a thought that came to mind, I don’t know if he has right now any kind of mentors outside of just his…his parents that are just praying for him and love him but I know for myself just other, ya know, older guys or close Christian friends really did it for me.

Hi family this is Amy from Denmark. Today, I call in asking ya’ll to join me in prayer over my good friend Daniel. As of yesterday, his oldest son was taken into custody by police. Thank You that You see what is going on in this family right now. Thank You that You see all the brokenness and all the hurt and all the questions and all of the sadness. And thank You that you hear all of these prayers that are being prayed for this young man and his family. God thank You that You’re a God who always shows up when we call on You. You don’t just show up at church when we’re dressed in our Sunday finest. You show up when we’re in the pit, when we’re in the hole, in the darkest of dark places, that’s when you show up. And thank You that even though we seem to be running in the complete opposite direction of You, not wanting anything to do with You, You never cease calling our name. And thank You Lord that You can take a human disaster and turn it into divine beauty. Thank You that You can use this dark place where this young man is, You can use it as part of Your plan to make him surrender his life to You. That is my deepest prayer Jesus that You will make a way and open the ears and heart of this young man. Protect him where he is now and surrender his family with all that they need, all that they need, Jesus. In Your name I pray, Your Holy name Jesus. Amen.

The Daily Audio Bible Reading for Monday May 24, 2021 (NIV)

2 Samuel 4-6

The Death of Ishbosheth

When Saul’s son heard that Abner had died at Hebron, he lost his courage, and all Israel panicked.

Saul’s son had two men who were commanders of raiding bands. One was named Ba’anah;[a] the second was Rekab. They were Benjaminites, sons of Rimmon from Be’eroth. (Be’eroth is considered part of Benjamin. The Be’erothites fled to Gittaim. They have lived there as aliens until the present time.)

Jonathan, the son of Saul, had a son with crippled feet. This son had been five years old when the report had come from Jezre’el about Saul and Jonathan. His caregiver picked him up and fled. While she was hurrying to escape, he fell and became crippled. His name was Mephibosheth.[b]

Ba’anah and Rekab, the sons of Rimmon from Be’eroth, went out during the heat of the day and came to the house of Ishbosheth while he was lying down for his midday rest. ⎣The doorkeeper of the house had been cleaning wheat, but she had grown drowsy and fallen asleep. So Rekab and his brother Ba’anah slipped in.⎦[c] They came into the inner part of the house as if they were coming to get wheat. They stabbed Ishbosheth in the stomach. Then Rekab and his brother Ba’anah escaped. They had gone into the house while Ishbosheth was lying on his bed in the room where he rested. They struck him, killed him, and cut off his head. Taking his head with them, they traveled on the Arabah Road all night.

They brought the head of Ishbosheth to David at Hebron, and they said to the king, “Look! Here is the head of Ishbosheth, the son of Saul, your enemy who sought your life. This day the Lord has given my lord the king vengeance on Saul and his offspring.”

David answered Rekab and his brother Ba’anah, the sons of Rimmon from Be’eroth, “As the Lord lives, who has redeemed my life from every evil, 10 the man who told me, ‘Look! Saul is dead,’ thought that he was bringing good news, but I seized him and killed him at Ziklag. That is what I gave him for his ‘good news.’ 11 So now that wicked men have killed a righteous man in his own house on his own bed, will I not require his blood from your hand! I will wipe you off the face of the earth.” 12 Then David gave the orders to his young men, and they killed them, cut off their hands and their feet, and hanged them beside the pool at Hebron. They took the head of Ishbosheth and buried it in the tomb of Abner in Hebron.

David Becomes King of All Israel

All the tribes of Israel came to David at Hebron. They said, “Look, we are your flesh and blood.[d] Day after day, even when Saul was king, you were the one leading Israel out to battle and back again. And you are the one to whom the Lord said, ‘You will shepherd my people Israel. You will become leader over Israel.’”

So all the elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron, and King David made a covenant with them at Hebron in the presence of the Lord. They anointed David king over Israel. David was thirty years old when he became king, and he ruled as king for forty years. He was king over Judah at Hebron for seven years and six months. For thirty-three years he was king over all Israel and Judah at Jerusalem.

The Capture of Jerusalem

The king and his men went to Jerusalem against the Jebusites, who were living in the land. The Jebusites said to David, “You will not get in here, because you could be kept out even by the blind and lame, who say, ‘David will not come in here.’” Nevertheless, David captured the stronghold of Zion, which became the City of David.

David said on that day, “Anyone who attacks the Jebusites must go up through the water shaft[e] to get at those lame and blind enemies of David.” Therefore the saying came about, “The blind and the lame will not come into the house.”

David lived in the stronghold and called it the City of David. David built up all sides of the stronghold from the Millo[f] inward. 10 David kept getting greater and greater, because the Lord, the God of Armies, was with him.

Events of David’s Reign

11 Hiram king of Tyre sent representatives to David with cedar logs, carpenters, and stonemasons, and they built a palace for David. 12 David knew that the Lord had established him as king over Israel and had lifted up his kingdom for the sake of his people Israel.

13 David took more concubines and wives from Jerusalem after he had come from Hebron, and more sons and daughters were born to David. 14 These are the names of those born to him in Jerusalem: Shammua, Shobab, Nathan, Solomon, 15 Ibhar, Elishua, Nepheg, Japhia, 16 Elishama, Eliada, and Eliphelet.

David Defeats the Philistines

17 The Philistines heard that David had been anointed king over Israel. So all the Philistines went up to search for David. David, however, heard about it and went down to the stronghold. 18 The Philistines came and spread out in the Valley of Rephaim. 19 David asked the Lord, “Shall I go up against the Philistines? Will you give them into my hand?”

The Lord said to David, “Go up, because I will certainly deliver the Philistines into your hand.”

20 So David went to Baal Perazim and defeated them there. He said, “The Lord has broken through my enemies before me like a wall of water.” That is why he named that place Baal Perazim.[g] 21 The Philistines abandoned their idols there, and David and his men carried them away.

22 The Philistines came up again and spread out in the Valley of Rephaim. 23 David inquired of the Lord, who said, “Do not go directly at them. Go around to their rear. Come upon them opposite the balsam trees.[h] 24 When you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the balsam trees, then get ready, because then the Lord has gone out in front of you to strike the army of the Philistines.” 25 So David did as the Lord commanded him. He struck the Philistines from Gibeon[i] all the way to Gezer.

David Brings the Ark to Jerusalem

David once again gathered all of the thirty thousand specially chosen men of Israel. Then David and all the people who were with him set out and went to Baale Judah[j] to bring up the Ark of God, who is called by the name “The Lord of Armies, who sits above the cherubim.”

They transported the Ark of God on a new cart. They brought it out from Abinadab’s house, which was on the hill. Uzzah and Ahio, the sons of Abinadab, were guiding the new cart ⎣⎦[k] with the Ark of God on it. Ahio was walking in front of the ark.

David and all the house of Israel were celebrating before the Lord with all kinds of instruments, castanets,[l] lyres, harps, hand drums, rattles,[m] and cymbals.

But when they came to the threshing floor of Nakon, Uzzah reached out for the Ark of God and grabbed it because the oxen stumbled. The anger of the Lord burned against Uzzah, and God struck him there for his irreverence. So he died there beside the Ark of God.

David was angry because the Lord had burst out so violently against Uzzah, and he called that place Perez Uzzah,[n] as it is called to this day. David was afraid of the Lord on that day. He said, “How can the Ark of the Lord come to me?” 10 David was not willing to move the Ark of the Lord to himself in the City of David.

So David diverted the ark to the house of Obed Edom the Gittite. 11 The Ark of the Lord remained at the house of Obed Edom the Gittite for three months, and the Lord blessed Obed Edom and his whole household. 12 David was told, “Because of the Ark of God, the Lord has blessed the house of Obed Edom and all that belongs to him.”[o]

With rejoicing, David went and brought up the Ark of God from the house of Obed Edom to the City of David. 13 When those carrying the Ark of the Lord had gone six paces, David sacrificed an ox and a fattened calf. 14 David danced with all his might before the Lord. He was wearing a linen vest.[p] 15 David and the entire house of Israel brought up the Ark of the Lord with shouting and with the sound of a ram’s horn.

16 When the Ark of the Lord arrived at the City of David, Michal, the daughter of Saul, looked out the window and saw King David leaping and dancing before the Lord, and she despised him in her heart.

17 They brought the Ark of the Lord and set it in its place inside the tent that David had pitched for it, and David offered burnt offerings and fellowship offerings before the Lord. 18 When David finished presenting the burnt offerings and the fellowship offerings, he blessed the people in the name of the Lord of Armies. 19 He distributed one loaf of bread, one cake of dates,[q] and one cake of raisins to all the people, to the whole crowd from Israel, to men and women, to each and every person. Then all the people left. All of them went to their own houses, 20 and David returned to bless his house.

Michal, the daughter of Saul, came out to meet David. She said, “How the king of Israel has brought honor to himself today by exposing himself in the sight of his female servants, just as a vulgar person exposes himself!”

21 David said to Michal, “I did this before the Lord, who chose me above your father and all his house, when he appointed me leader over the people of the Lord, over Israel. I will rejoice before the Lord, 22 and I will make myself even more lowly than this. I will be humble in my own eyes, but among the servant girls you have spoken about, among them I will be honored.”

23 Michal, the daughter of Saul, had no child to the day of her death.

John 13:31-14:14

31 After Judas left, Jesus said, “Now the Son of Man is glorified, and God is glorified in him.[a] 32 If God is glorified in him,[b] God will also glorify the Son in himself and will glorify him at once.”

Jesus Warns Peter

33 “Dear children, I am going to be with you only a little longer. You will look for me, and just as I told the Jews, so I tell you now: Where I am going, you cannot come.

34 “A new commandment I give you: Love one another. Just as I have loved you, so also you are to love one another. 35 By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

36 Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, where are you going?”

Jesus answered, “Where I am going you cannot follow now, but you will follow later.”

37 Peter asked, “Lord, why can’t I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you!”

38 Jesus replied, “Will you really lay down your life for me? Amen, Amen, I tell you: The rooster will not crow until you have denied me three times.”

No Greater Love—in Peace

14 “Do not let your heart be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many mansions.[c] If it were not so, I would have told you. I am going to prepare a place for you.[d] And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and take you to be with me, so that you may also be where I am. You know where I am going, and you know the way.”

“Lord, we don’t know where you are going,” Thomas replied, “so how can we know the way?”

Jesus said to him, “I am the Way and the Truth and the Life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. If you know me, you would also know my Father.[e] From now on you do know him and have seen him.”

“Lord,” said Philip, “show us the Father, and that is enough for us.”

“Have I been with you so long,” Jesus answered, “and you still do not know me, Philip? The one who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10 Don’t you believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I am telling you I am not speaking on my own, but the Father who remains in me is doing his works. 11 Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father is in me. Or else believe[f] because of the works themselves.

12 “Amen, Amen, I tell you: The one who believes in me will do the works that I am doing. And he will do even greater works than these, because I am going to the Father. 13 I will do whatever you ask in my name so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 If you ask me[g] for anything in my name, I will do it.

Gimel: Open My Eyes

17 Reward your servant.
Then I will live, and I will keep your words.
18 Uncover my eyes, and I will behold wonders from your law.
19 I am an alien on earth.
Do not hide your commandments from me.

your servant will meditate on your statutes.
24 Yes, your testimonies are my delights.
They are my advisors.

Revive my life according to your words.

The king and his men went to Jerusalem against the Jebusites, who were living in the land. David lived in the stronghold and called it the City of David. David built up all sides of the stronghold from the Millo[f] inward. 10 David kept getting greater and greater, because the Lord, the God of Armies, was with him.

Psalm 119:17-32

Gimel: Open My Eyes

17 Reward your servant.
Then I will live, and I will keep your words.
18 Uncover my eyes, and I will behold wonders from your law.
19 I am an alien on earth.
Do not hide your commandments from me.
20 My soul is overwhelmed by desire for your judgments at all times.
21 You rebuke the arrogant, who are cursed,
those who stray from your commandments.
22 Remove scorn and contempt from me,
for I guard your testimonies.
23 Though officials sit together and speak against me,
your servant will meditate on your statutes.
24 Yes, your testimonies are my delights.
They are my advisors.

Dalet: A Changed Heart

25 My soul[a] is stuck in the dust.
Revive my life according to your words.
26 I told you about my ways and you answered me.
Teach me your statutes.
27 Make me understand the meaning of your precepts.
Then I will meditate on your wonders.
28 My soul melts with sorrow.
By your words make me stand firm.
29 Turn me away from false ways,
and be gracious to me through your law.
30 I have chosen the way of truth.
I accept[b] your judgments.
31 I cling to your testimonies, O Lord.
Do not let me be put to shame.
32 I run the way of your commandments,
for you have strengthened my heart.[c]

Footnotes:

  1. Psalm 119:25 In the Old Testament my soul is a more emotional way of saying I or me.
  2. Psalm 119:30 Or I set before me
  3. Psalm 119:32 Or you increased my understanding or you motivated me. Literally you made my heart wide.

Proverbs 15:31-32

31 An ear that listens to a life-giving warning
will find a home among the wise.
32 A person who ignores discipline despises himself,
but a person who listens to a warning acquires good sense.

2 Samuel 2:12-3:39, John 13:1-30, Psalm 119:1-16, Proverbs 15:29-30

Today is the 23rd day of May, welcome to the Daily Audio Bible, I’m Brian it is wonderful, wonderful to be here with you today as we greet a brand new shiny sparkly week. And we get to live into together as we continue our journey, day-by-day, step-by-step moving through the scriptures. So, we greet a brand-new week. We’ll read from the Engelical Heritage Version, the EHV, this week. And we’re just getting going in 2 Samuel. We have crossed that threshold but…but we’re gonna be settling into 2 Samuel here now and 2 Samuel will lead us deeper into the story of David who is now King of the Tribe of Judah but that it’s, not the King of Israel. The tribe of Judah has named him their King but there are 2 kings now contending for this throne. Saul’s surviving son Ishbosheth has also been named king so it’s a bit complicated. 2 Samuel chapter 2 verse 12 through 3 verse 39.

Prayer:

Father, we thank You for Your word, we thank You for this brand new week that we get to move into and live into and live out together in community as we continue this journey through the last full week of this the 5thmonth of the year, it’s hard to believe but we’ll transition to the 6th month of the year next week and so we pay particular attention as we move through this week, this shiny sparkly week that we get to finish well, if we so choose, we can finish this 5th month well. So, come Holy Spirit lead us into all truths, lead us deeper into our relationship with Jesus we ask. In His mighty name we pray. Amen

Prayers and Encouragement:

Hey my loving DAB fam, this is Kingdom Seeker Daniel. Family I want to acknowledge a couple of DABers and ask for your prayers. First of all GG from Gainesville, my goodness, how timely your words of encouragement were for me personally and I speak for the entire Global Campfire thank you, thank you young lady. You are such a refreshment from the Lord. I appreciate you sister so much for your ministry. And then for my brother, Dwayne from Wisconsin man I am so with you like never before concerning Nathan. I am praying that the Lord will run Nathan down and bring him into full surrender in the name of Jesus, as well as for Nicholas. I pray that your heart will and your wife’s hearts will be strengthened and that God will show himself and prove himself as the great rescuer. And speaking of rescue, my son Daniel the II is in trouble big-time family. I just learned on last night that he was arrested for a strong robbery in California. He has been arrested on felony charges and he is being held in Fresno County jail awaiting trial and so I am asking that you would please pray for my son that first and foremost that he would hear the voice of God. That he will surrender and that he will turn to him. So, please family thank you so much in advance for your prayers for my son and we are believing that God will reach him. In Jesus name, love you all.

Hi Daily Audio Bible family this is Renzo in Florida and I just wanted to pray for somebody that I heard call in named Noah that recently for the past, I think he said 9 months that he’s been free from drug addiction and right now he’s going through pornography addiction and I just wanna tell you brother in…in December 2019 when I was in 8th grade, I mean December of 2018, I had a really bad addiction to pornography. It first started off and then it just got really, really bad and then I think in May of 2019 God completely changed my life. He completely healed me of it and I was just…I went into youth group one time and then 1 of my leaders was telling me about how it was bad and it ruins your marriage and it’s just not good. And it’s just so refreshing that God can heal us from anything. That’s how great, mighty and powerful and omnipresent our God is, he is everywhere at one time. And we just…I just want to pray for you. Father God, I just thank You for Noah. I just thank You for his heart for You Lord. And just let the Holy Spirit to guide him and be with him and fill us up and just protect him and any single time he has that thought Lord just let him pray and you will heal him from that God. You guide him, protect him and be with him always and Holy Spirit fill him up. In Jesus name I pray. Amen. Thank you, guys, for everything, thank you for this community where we can reach out and help our fellow believers in Christ. We just thank you for…I just thank you guys so much, I just thank you. You have a blessed rest of your day. Praying for you guys love you guys, Bye.

Hi this is Holly Heart I was calling in for Mom Tries she’s having a competition this coming weekend and I wanted to wish her the best of luck, triathlon and I am sure that you will bring glory to His name. You have already brought glory to his name by keeping the body that he gave you in good condition and clean for Him. So, great job and good luck.

Hi DAB it’s Alavia from New Mexico. I just…I really want to pray my co-worker. I had a very long conversation with my co-worker and she’s…I can’t believe the amount of things that she’s going through. She’s lost at least 4 family members within the last two years and she’s having financial struggles, spiritual warfare, everything you could think of. She lost her daughter; her daughter was murdered a couple months ago and I just…I really want to pray for her. So, Lord I just pray that You look after my co-worker right now. I pray that You lift anything bad that’s going on with her spiritually. I rebuke anything that’s not supposed to be with her right now. And Lord I pray that Your presence is with her more than ever now and that I pray that things come up from here because I know that she really needs it. I wanna pray for her entire family I know that their going through grief and struggle. I pray that they keep looking forward and keep looking towards You God and I pray that even…no matter who is going through this I pray that you know that I’m praying for you and a lot of people are praying for you. And I hope you know that you’re not alone and because these bad things are happening doesn’t mean that God has abandoned you. I know it seems weird and impossible but please don’t give up but thank you DAB for praying with me. And even if you’re going through anything that you don’t think is really a big problem trust me you could pray for anything. But just know that I love you guys and thank you for the family that I have here. Bye.

5/23/21 DAB Chronological Transcription

2 Samuel 24, 1 Chronicles 21-22, Psalm 30

Welcome to Daily Audio Bible Chronological. I’m Jill, it’s the twenty third day of May. Can you believe it? We are quickly approaching the end of May. It is gonna end and June will be here before we know it. Is anybody else rejoicing that school is over? Hallelujah. Thank you, Jesus. Maybe school’s not done for you guys yet, but we are done and we survived. I survived being Ezequiel’s teacher this year. So we’re praising God that that’s over. He’s already upset only 90 days of summer vacation. I said, kid, you need to enjoy being young and having zero responsibilities while you can because that’ll slip like melted butter on hot bread just as much as everything else is going on these days. We’re in a brand new week. I already said that. Brand new translation. We are starting a brand new translation that we have not read from yet this year. I’m pretty excited about this. We’re reading from the Evangelical Heritage version this week. And today we’re reading 2nd Samuel Chapter twenty-four, First Chronicles, twenty one and twenty two and then Psalm thirty beginning today with Second Samuel Chapter twenty four.

Commentary:

Thank you once again for your word. Thank you for this day. Thank you for your mercy David spoke of today. Knowing that he had done wrong and knowing it was to pick his course of discipline after his awareness of what he had done and David even himself asking that he be handed over into your hands, God, because he knows that your mercy is great, not wanting to be handed over into the hands of a man, but knowing that your mercy is endless, father, that we would be as merciful with each other as you are to us. We can’t do it without you. So we’re asking for more. We’re asking for more of your mercy because we who have been given much, have much to give. So let it fill up in us and spill out and pour over so that we would extend the same mercy to each other God that you extended to David, your king and your servant. Thank you for your newness today, for this new week, this new mercy that’s awaiting us, this new chance to do the next right thing, to change the trajectory of our lives, to break the cycles of generational behaviors and patterns that we have followed for years and years so that we can put an end to the repeated patterns of behavior and words that have been handed down that we have just succumbed to. Thank you for every moment forward after that realization that we have the power to change, we have the power to break it off, and we can do that by the next different choice, different words, different action than what we have been participating in. And we thank you that you Holy Spirit are our great counselor, our great helper, our great convictor that compels us forward to change. In the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, Amen.

And we do try to be exclusively women there as we talk about things that directly deal with us as women. I try to keep that very sacred in that regard as we’re sharing some very personal things sometimes. Sometimes the women feel like they finally have a friend and a safe place to land to speak out on some things. And so, you know, if you’re curious and you just take a look around, I just know that that is intended to be set aside specifically for women. And we thank you for your cooperation. That’s it for me today. I’m Jill. I look forward to turn that page with you together tomorrow. Until then, love one another.

Community Prayer Line:

Hi, this is Valerie from Canada. I’m calling in for Emme from Illinois. You really touched my heart when you were asking for prayer, for wisdom about your marriage. And I just want to say that you are so loved and that God, God’s heart breaks with yours. And I’m so sorry to hear what is happening. I’m so sorry that you’re not receiving the love that you need,
especially in this time with your baby. And I pray for God’s love to cover you, his shepherding grace and power to shelter you and I and the decisions that you make in every area of your life. I pray his Shalom peace over you in Jesus name. Amen.

Good morning. DABC family. This is Bless Bermuda. This is my first time calling in. And Jill, I want to thank you. Today’s the 20th of May. I want to thank you for your message on repentance. It’s that heart felt turning away and asking for forgiveness. My husband and I are going through a difficult situation right now. And, you know, there’s there’s just been so many things that have been done and said and I just want to thank you that you made me look within and see where I have fallen short. And I’ve asked God and my husband for forgiveness and just, you know, want to move on. I just want to see healing. I want to be that vessel that God wants to use. And so I just thank you for your openness and I just thank you. So I ask for the prayer of the DABC family to just keep us in your prayers. And I know that God has this in control.

This is Protected by His Wings in Tennessee. I was going to give a praise report on baby Andrew, called in a couple of months ago requesting your prayers for this little baby had been born very prematurely, was having severe problems breathing, heart rate, temperature, you name it, digesting food. He was just having all sorts of medical issues. And praise be to God that he was discharged to go home a couple of weeks ago. And he’s doing well. His his parents, his grandparents. They all wanted, though, for anyone who out there pray for them, that they greatly appreciate your prayers. They know that this child, their baby, made it due to the love and grace of God’s healing hand. And I wanted to call and thank you for for praying for baby Andrew. Thank you.

Hey, my sweet DABC fam. This is Kingdom Seeker Daniel. Family, I am calling for your prayers, support. My son has been arrested on felony charges for strong arm robbery, I learned of this last night, which would have been the 19th, today’s the 20th. And he is in the Fresno State County Jail awaiting trial. I am believing that God is at work in my boy’s life like never before, and I’m praying and asking for your prayer, covering that Daniel Christopher Young, the Second will simply say yes to the Lord that he will surrender all of that pain, all of the hurt, all of the regret to the Lord. And that he will find himself walking in the perfect will of God, fulfilling the call that God has in his life. So family, will you please join me and Lady of Victory in  praying for him as well as for his mother? Her name is Viola Parker. She’s in need of prayer as well. Also needing to turn back to the Lord. So thank you. Thank you so much, family that. We can we can come here and share and I so appreciate you guys, you guys are truly amazing. Love you so much. God bless you guys.
