Leviticus 13:1-59, Mark 6:1-29, Psalms 39:1-13, Proverbs 10:10

Today is the 23rd day of February welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I’m Brian it is wonderful to be here with you today as we take the next step forward in the Scriptures this week and this month. We’re reading from the New Living Translation this week and we’ll just pick up where we left off yesterday, the book of Leviticus. Today we will read chapter 14.

Commentary:

Okay. So, in the book of Leviticus we were continuing to talk about skin and skin diseases and mold and mildew and…and, you know, plaster and mold in the plaster and tearing out the stones. And we spoke…we spoke about this yesterday and it bears repeating it. The sentiment of what we’re talking about here bears repeating because…because we have work to do. We all have work to do in this particular area. But it’s interesting to note that in this brand-new culture that’s being woven together, that how central the priests, the anointed of God were inside the culture. Like you probably could hardly imagine the idea of going to your pastor today and saying, like could you check out this skin rash, the skin rash on my arm? That…that’s not what we would do. We would go to a doctor. We would go to a specialist for those things. And, so, when we need spiritual help we go to a pastor where…this is a very…the spirituality of these earliest Hebrew people, it’s all integrated. It’s not like they’re thinking this is…this is a spiritual matter, this is an emotional matter, this is a physical matter, its life and its integrated. And, so, that’s why we’re able to look at something like…like a skin rash or like mold and know like, behind this is a spiritual component, there’s a spiritual application here. And, so, we talked about like what is below the surface, right, what is more than skin deep yesterday. What is growing in the dank and dark basements of our lives. What are we letting to continue to sort of thrive and spread simply because we don’t want to go deal with it or its seemingly too painful to go deal with? I kinda know how this goes. You let something go and it goes, and the problem continues to grow until you eventually have to deal with it, but it’s a much bigger problem than it had to be. So, if you notice some mold or something in your house it’s better to deal with it as quickly as it’s discovered, right? Because if you don’t then you might have to tear a part of your house down or all of it down. And, so, what we’re seeing here in…in Leviticus, like you can go in and if it’s below the plaster and its deeper then you have to tear out some of the stones and replace them with clean stones and re-plaster. So, from a spiritual perspective it’s time in the year to pay attention to these things because we probably came into this adventure in the Bible thinking that the Bible would transform us if we just show up. And it does because it invites us to participate and be here, be present in our own lives and deal with things because freedom is where we’re headed. And we can’t carry all this stuff along with us. It’s always been poison. It’s what brought us to the place that we got to. And, so, it’s time to kind of look around the walls of our heart, essentially inviting the Holy Spirit to go down into the basement and shine the light of truth down there even though we may not have been down there in years. It’s like…it…the ultimate question is, do we want to be free? Like, what would it be like to not carry chains around our ankles anymore? What would it be like to not have any offenses between us and anyone else? Like imagine the freedom that is available if we do the work and walk with God.

Prayer:

And, so, Holy Spirit we invite You today, and this is like the second day where we’re kind of here in the same subject matter. So, Jesus we are asking You as our great high priest to come and examine the walls, to come and look at the rashes on our skin, to come and show us what is more than skin deep and what is just gonna go away and heal itself. Show us the work that we need to begin to do so that as we were talking about last week, we tend the garden of our lives, we become the good soil. We need all the structures of our lives to be sound and built on solid rock so that we might experience the stability of walking with You, but also the freedom of bringing the gift of the good news into the world. And, so, we’re slowing down a little bit here and just inviting You. In fact, even as we’re praying this prayer things are coming to mind. We already know some of the big ones that we’ve been avoiding, things that we just don’t want to mend, things that we don’t want to participate in. We want them mended but we don’t want to have to do the work. And You are inviting us this year to do the work of mending. And, so, we look at the structures of our lives. Show us where the mold is. Show us where the mildew is. Show us what’s more than skin deep. Come Holy Spirit we pray. In the name of Jesus, we ask. Amen.
