Jeremiah 48:1-49:22

Judgment on Moab

48 (A)Concerning Moab.

Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel:

“Woe to (B)Nebo, for it is laid waste!
(C)Kiriathaim is put to shame, it is taken;
the fortress is put to shame (D)and broken down;
the renown of Moab is no more.
In (E)Heshbon they planned disaster against her:
‘Come, let us cut her off (F)from being a nation!’
You also, O (G)Madmen, shall be brought to silence;
the sword shall pursue you.

“A voice! A cry from (H)Horonaim,
‘Desolation and great destruction!’
Moab is destroyed;
her little ones have made a cry.
(I)For at the ascent of Luhith
they go up weeping;[a]
for (J)at the descent of Horonaim
they have heard the distressed cry[b] of destruction.
Flee! Save yourselves!
You will be like (K)a juniper in the desert!
For, (L)because you trusted in your works and your treasures,
you also shall be taken;
and (M)Chemosh (N)shall go into exile
with (O)his priests and his officials.
(P)The destroyer shall come upon every city,
and no city shall escape;
the valley shall perish,
and (Q)the plain shall be destroyed,
as the Lord has spoken.

“Give wings to Moab,
for she would fly away;
her cities shall become a desolation,
with no inhabitant in them.

10 (R)“Cursed is he who does (S)the work of the Lord with slackness, and cursed is he who keeps back his sword from bloodshed.

11 “Moab has been at ease from his youth
and has (T)settled on his dregs;
he has not been emptied from vessel to vessel,
nor has he gone into exile;
so his taste remains in him,
and his scent is not changed.

12 “Therefore, behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I shall send to him pourers who will pour him, and empty his vessels and break his[c] jars in pieces. 13 Then (U)Moab shall be ashamed of Chemosh, as (V)the house of Israel was ashamed of (W)Bethel, their confidence.

14 “How do you say, ‘We are heroes
and mighty men of war’?
15 The destroyer of (X)Moab and his cities has come up,
and the choicest of his young men have (Y)gone down to slaughter,
declares (Z)the King, (AA)whose name is the Lord of hosts.
16 The calamity of Moab is near at hand,
and his affliction hastens swiftly.
17 (AB)Grieve for him, all you who are around him,
and all who know his name;
say, (AC)‘How the mighty scepter is broken,
the glorious staff.’

18 (AD)“Come down from your glory,
and sit on the parched ground,
O inhabitant of (AE)Dibon!
For the destroyer of Moab has come up against you;
he has destroyed your strongholds.
19 (AF)Stand by the way (AG)and watch,
O inhabitant of (AH)Aroer!
Ask him who flees and her who escapes;
say, ‘What has happened?’
20 Moab is put to shame, for it is broken;
(AI)wail and cry!
Tell it beside (AJ)the Arnon,
that (AK)Moab is laid waste.

21 “Judgment has come upon (AL)the tableland, upon Holon, and (AM)Jahzah, and Mephaath, 22 and (AN)Dibon, and (AO)Nebo, and Beth-diblathaim, 23 and (AP)Kiriathaim, and Beth-gamul, and (AQ)Beth-meon, 24 and (AR)Kerioth, and (AS)Bozrah, and all the cities of the land of Moab, far and near. 25 (AT)The horn of Moab is cut off, and (AU)his arm is broken, declares the Lord.

26 (AV)“Make him drunk, (AW)because he magnified himself against the Lord, so that Moab shall (AX)wallow in his vomit, (AY)and he too shall be held in derision. 27 (AZ)Was not Israel a derision to you? (BA)Was he found among thieves, that whenever you spoke of him (BB)you wagged your head?

28 (BC)“Leave the cities, and dwell in the rock,
O inhabitants of Moab!
Be (BD)like the dove that nests
in the sides of the mouth of a gorge.
29 (BE)We have heard of the pride of Moab—
he is very proud—
of his loftiness, his pride, and his arrogance,
and the haughtiness of his heart.
30 I know his insolence, declares the Lord;
(BF)his boasts are false,
his deeds are false.
31 (BG)Therefore I wail for Moab;
I cry out for all Moab;
for the men of (BH)Kir-hareseth I mourn.
32 More than for (BI)Jazer I weep for you,
(BJ)O vine of (BK)Sibmah!
(BL)Your branches passed over the sea,
reached to the Sea of (BM)Jazer;
on your summer fruits and your grapes
the destroyer has fallen.
33 (BN)Gladness and joy have been taken away
from the fruitful land of Moab;
I have made the wine cease from the winepresses;
no one treads them with shouts of joy;
the shouting is not the shout of joy.

34 (BO)“From the outcry at Heshbon even to Elealeh, as far as Jahaz they utter their voice, from Zoar to (BP)Horonaim and Eglath-shelishiyah. For the waters of Nimrim also have become desolate. 35 And I will bring to an end in Moab, declares the Lord, him who offers sacrifice in (BQ)the high place and makes offerings to his god. 36 Therefore my heart moans for Moab like a flute, and my heart moans like a flute for the men of (BR)Kir-hareseth. (BS)Therefore the riches they gained have perished.

37 (BT)“For every head is shaved and every beard cut off. (BU)On all the hands are gashes, and (BV)around the waist is sackcloth. 38 On all the housetops of Moab and in the squares there is nothing but lamentation, for I have broken Moab like (BW)a vessel for which no one cares, declares the Lord. 39 How it is broken! How they wail! (BX)How Moab has turned his back in shame! So Moab (BY)has become a derision and a horror to all that are around him.”

40 For thus says the Lord:
“Behold, (BZ)one shall fly swiftly like an eagle
(CA)and spread his wings against Moab;
41 (CB)the cities shall be taken
and the strongholds seized.
(CC)The heart of the warriors of Moab shall be in that day
like the heart of (CD)a woman in her birth pains;
42 Moab shall be (CE)destroyed and be no longer a people,
because (CF)he magnified himself against the Lord.
43 (CG)Terror, pit, and snare
are before you, O inhabitant of Moab!
declares the Lord.
44 He who flees from the terror
shall fall into the pit,
and he who climbs out of the pit
shall be caught in the snare.
(CH)For I will bring these things upon Moab,
the year of their punishment,
declares the Lord.

45 “In the shadow of Heshbon
fugitives stop without strength,
for fire came out from Heshbon,
flame from the house of Sihon;
it has destroyed (CI)the forehead of Moab,
the crown of (CJ)the sons of tumult.
46 (CK)Woe to you, O Moab!
The people of (CL)Chemosh are undone,
for your sons have been taken captive,
and your daughters into captivity.
47 (CM)Yet I will restore the fortunes of Moab
in the latter days, declares the Lord.”
Thus far is the judgment on Moab.

Judgment on Ammon

49 (CN)Concerning the Ammonites.

Thus says the Lord:

“Has Israel no sons?
Has he no heir?
Why then has (CO)Milcom[d] (CP)dispossessed Gad,
and his people settled in its cities?
Therefore, behold, the days are coming,
declares the Lord,
when I will cause (CQ)the battle cry to be heard
against (CR)Rabbah of the Ammonites;
it shall become a desolate (CS)mound,
and its villages shall be burned with fire;
then Israel shall dispossess those who dispossessed him,
says the Lord.

“Wail, O (CT)Heshbon, for Ai is laid waste!
Cry out, O daughters of (CU)Rabbah!
(CV)Put on sackcloth,
lament, and run to and fro among the hedges!
For (CW)Milcom shall go into exile,
(CX)with his priests and his officials.
Why do you boast of your valleys,[e]
(CY)O faithless daughter,
(CZ)who trusted in her treasures, saying,
‘Who will come against me?’
Behold, (DA)I will bring terror upon you,
declares the Lord God of hosts,
from all who are around you,
and you shall be driven out, every man straight before him,
with none to gather the fugitives.

“But (DB)afterward I will restore the fortunes of the Ammonites, declares the Lord.”

Judgment on Edom

Concerning (DC)Edom.

Thus says the Lord of hosts:

(DD)“Is wisdom no more in (DE)Teman?
(DF)Has counsel perished from the prudent?
(DG)Has their wisdom vanished?
(DH)Flee, turn back, dwell in the depths,
O inhabitants of (DI)Dedan!
For I will bring the calamity of Esau upon him,
(DJ)the time when I punish him.
(DK)If grape gatherers came to you,
would they not leave (DL)gleanings?
(DM)If thieves came by night,
would they not destroy only enough for themselves?
10 (DN)But I have stripped Esau bare;
(DO)I have uncovered his hiding places,
and he is not able to conceal himself.
His children are destroyed, and his brothers,
and his neighbors; and (DP)he is no more.
11 (DQ)Leave your fatherless children; I will keep them alive;
(DR)and let your widows trust in me.”

12 For thus says the Lord: (DS)“If those who did not deserve to drink the cup must drink it, (DT)will you go unpunished? You shall not go unpunished, but you must drink. 13 (DU)For I have sworn by myself, declares the Lord, that (DV)Bozrah shall become (DW)a horror, a taunt, a waste, and a curse, and all her cities shall be perpetual wastes.”

14 (DX)I have heard a message from the Lord,
and an envoy has been sent among the nations:
(DY)“Gather yourselves together and come against her,
and rise up for battle!
15 For behold, I will make you small among the nations,
despised among mankind.
16 The horror you inspire has deceived you,
and the pride of your heart,
you who live in the clefts of the rock,[f]
who hold the height of the hill.
Though you (DZ)make your nest as high as the eagle's,
I will bring you down from there,
declares the Lord.

17 (EA)“Edom shall become a horror. (EB)Everyone who passes by it will be horrified (EC)and will hiss because of all its disasters. 18 (ED)As when Sodom and Gomorrah and their (EE)neighboring cities were overthrown, says the Lord, (EF)no man shall dwell there, (EG)no man shall sojourn in her. 19 (EH)Behold, (EI)like a lion coming up from (EJ)the jungle of the Jordan against a perennial pasture, I will suddenly make him[g] run away from her. And I will appoint over her whomever I choose. (EK)For who is like me? (EL)Who will summon me? (EM)What shepherd can stand before me? 20 Therefore hear the plan that the Lord has made against (EN)Edom and the purposes that he has formed against the inhabitants of (EO)Teman: (EP)Even the little ones of the flock shall be dragged away. Surely their fold shall be appalled at their fate. 21 At the sound of their fall (EQ)the earth shall tremble; the sound of their cry shall be heard at the Red Sea. 22 Behold, (ER)one shall mount up and fly swiftly like an eagle and spread his wings against (ES)Bozrah, and the heart of the warriors of Edom shall be in that day like the heart (ET)of a woman in her birth pains.”

2 Timothy 4

Preach the Word

(A)I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, (B)who is to judge the living and the dead, and by (C)his appearing and his kingdom: preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; (D)reprove, rebuke, and (E)exhort, with complete patience and teaching. (F)For the time is coming when people will not endure (G)sound[a] teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, and (H)will turn away from listening to the truth and (I)wander off into myths. As for you, (J)always be sober-minded, (K)endure suffering, do the work of (L)an evangelist, (M)fulfill your ministry.

For (N)I am already being poured out as a drink offering, and the time of my (O)departure has come. (P)I have fought the good fight, (Q)I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Henceforth there is (R)laid up for me (S)the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, (T)the righteous judge, will award to me on (U)that day, and not only to me but also to all (V)who have loved his appearing.

(W)Do your best to come to me soon. 10 For (X)Demas, (Y)in love with (Z)this present world, (AA)has deserted me and gone to Thessalonica. Crescens has gone to Galatia,[b] (AB)Titus to Dalmatia. 11 (AC)Luke alone is with me. Get (AD)Mark and bring him with you, for he is very useful to me for ministry. 12 (AE)Tychicus I have sent to Ephesus. 13 When you come, bring the cloak that I left with Carpus at Troas, also the books, and above all the parchments. 14 (AF)Alexander the coppersmith did me great harm; (AG)the Lord will repay him according to his deeds. 15 Beware of him yourself, for he strongly opposed our message. 16 At my first defense no one came to stand by me, but all deserted me. (AH)May it not be charged against them! 17 But (AI)the Lord stood by me and (AJ)strengthened me, so that through me the message might be fully proclaimed and (AK)all the Gentiles might hear it. So (AL)I was rescued (AM)from the lion's mouth. 18 The Lord will rescue me from every evil deed and bring me safely into his heavenly kingdom. (AN)To him be the glory forever and ever. Amen.

Final Greetings

19 Greet (AO)Prisca and Aquila, and (AP)the household of Onesiphorus. 20 Erastus remained at Corinth, and I left (AQ)Trophimus, who was ill, at Miletus. 21 (AR)Do your best to come before winter. Eubulus sends greetings to you, as do Pudens and Linus and Claudia and all the brothers.[c]

22 The Lord be (AS)with your spirit. (AT)Grace be with you.[d]

Psalm 95-96

Let Us Sing Songs of Praise

95 Oh come, let us sing to the Lord;
let us (A)make a joyful noise to (B)the rock of our salvation!
Let us (C)come into his presence with thanksgiving;
let us (D)make a joyful noise to him with songs of praise!
For the Lord is (E)a great God,
and a great King (F)above all gods.
In his hand are the depths of the earth;
the heights of the mountains are his also.
The sea is his, for (G)he made it,
and his hands formed (H)the dry land.

Oh come, let us worship and bow down;
let us (I)kneel before the Lord, our (J)Maker!
For he is our (K)God,
and we are the people of his (L)pasture,
and the sheep of his hand.
(M)Today, if you (N)hear his voice,
(O)do not harden your hearts, as at (P)Meribah,
as on the day at (Q)Massah in the wilderness,
when your fathers put me to the (R)test
and put me to the proof, though they had seen my (S)work.
10 (T)For forty years I loathed that generation
and said, “They are a people who go astray in their heart,
and they have not known (U)my ways.”
11 Therefore I (V)swore in my wrath,
“They shall not enter (W)my rest.”

Worship in the Splendor of Holiness

96 (X)Oh sing to the Lord (Y)a new song;
sing to the Lord, all the earth!
Sing to the Lord, bless his name;
(Z)tell of his salvation from day to day.
Declare his glory among the nations,
his marvelous works among all the peoples!
For (AA)great is the Lord, and (AB)greatly to be praised;
he is to be feared above (AC)all gods.
For all the gods of the peoples are worthless idols,
but the Lord (AD)made the heavens.
Splendor and majesty are before him;
(AE)strength and beauty are in his sanctuary.

Ascribe to the Lord, O (AF)families of the peoples,
(AG)ascribe to the Lord glory and strength!
Ascribe to the Lord (AH)the glory due his name;
bring (AI)an offering, and (AJ)come into his courts!
Worship the Lord in (AK)the splendor of holiness;[a]
(AL)tremble before him, all the earth!

10 Say among the nations, (AM)“The Lord reigns!
Yes, the world is established; it shall never be moved;
he will (AN)judge the peoples with equity.”

11 Let (AO)the heavens be glad, and let (AP)the earth rejoice;
let (AQ)the sea roar, and all that fills it;
12 let (AR)the field exult, and everything in it!
Then shall all (AS)the trees of the forest sing for joy
13 before the Lord, for he comes,
for he comes (AT)to judge the earth.
He will judge the world in righteousness,
and the peoples in his faithfulness.

Proverbs 26:9-12

Like (A)a thorn that goes up into the hand of a drunkard
is a proverb in the mouth of fools.
10 Like an archer who wounds everyone
is one who hires a passing fool or drunkard.[a]
11 Like (B)a dog that returns to his vomit
is (C)a fool who repeats his folly.
12 Do you see a man who is (D)wise in his own eyes?
(E)There is more hope for a fool than for him.
