2 Chronicles 32:1-33:13, Romans 15:23-16:9, Psalms 25:16-22, Proverbs 20:16-18

Today is the 2nd day of August. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I am Brian. It is a pleasure to be here with you as we…well…as we move into the end of the week and approach the weekend, the first weekend of the month of August. We have made it a long way together and we’re learning so much together as God’s word continues to speak on its own behalf, in its entirety in a year. So we’re reading from the Common English Bible this week and we’re rounding the corner on second Chronicles and for that matter we’re rounding the corner on the letter to the Romans. So, we’re gonna be switching up here over the next couple of days into some new territory but first we need to finish well where we are. Second Chronicles chapter 32 verse 1 through 33 verse 13 today.

Commentary:

Alright. So, from our time and second Chronicles today we again encountered the story of Assyria’s invasion of Israel and we can just be like, “yeah there’s another piece of the story, there’s some history of how things happened”, but if we go a little closer, we see that we’re reading our own story as well and we’re given some pretty powerful counsel on how to navigate. So, when King Hezekiah faced the reality that the Assyrians were coming, and they were outnumbered and unprepared he acted very wisely. He did what he could first to prepare himself and his army for the attack. Like, he cut off the water flow so that if the invasion happened than the invading army wouldn’t have access to water and he fortified and repaired the defensive walls of Jerusalem and built towers and additional defenses and then had weaponry for his soldiers made that they would need for that kind of a battle and then he encouraged the people by telling them, “be brave and be strong. Don’t let the king of Assyria and all those warriors that he brings with them scare you because you dismay, because our forces are greater than his. All he has his human strength, but we have the Lord our God will help us fight our battles.” So, let’s look at what happened here. King Hezekiah received word that the enemy was going to invade and what he did not do is go lay on his bed and sulk. What he did do is everything he could do to prepare and acknowledged God in all of it. So, we easily could pause here and consider the battles that we’re facing. Are we doing all that we can to be prepared and then having faith in God alone or are we just completely unaware? As the story went on, we saw that Hezekiah was prepared, as prepared as they could be. The first offensive initiative by the Assyrians had nothing to do with swords and spears and arrows and wood and metal. The first attack…the first wave…and this is so often true in our lives…the first attack was made out of words, right? So, Sennacherib, the king of Assyria sends his envoys to the walls of Jerusalem to tell them they’re gonna die. It’s a psychological attack and it’s supposed to weaken and intimidate Jerusalem. Just listen to these taunts. “What makes you so confident that you stay put in Jerusalem while it is being attacked? Obviously, King Hezekiah’s fooled you into surrendering yourselves to death by hunger and thirst when he says the Lord our God will rescue us from a serious king. Don’t know what I and my predecessors have done to the people of other nations. Were any of the gods of these other nations able to rescue their lands from my power? Which one of any of the gods of these nations that my predecessors destroyed was able to rescue them from my power? So, why should your God be able to rescue you from my power? Don’t let Hezekiah seduce you like fools. Don’t believe him. No God of any other nation or kingdom has been able to rescue their people from me or from my predecessors. No. Your gods won’t rescue you from my power.” Does that sound familiar at all? Like, doesn’t that resemble the kind heckling and insults that plague us nearly every time we’re facing a battle? So, like, no matter how prepared we are we seem to face the taunts of the enemy because if we can be demoralized, like, if we will just surrender there…well then it doesn’t matter how prepared we are or how much were trusting in God. If we believe the taunts then fear overtakes and wins the battle over our faith and then God seems completely absent, like He’s gone, like He’s unavailable. And, so, when we feel this way, we just need to backtrack and look at the fact that we’ve been demoralized and surrendered. The thing is, in the story, the threats, the things that were being said outside of Jerusalem’s walls, those things were true. The Assyrian Empire had completely destroyed many kings and kingdoms and for sure they had an intimidating, merciless army, but rather than accept defeat and surrender, Hezekiah and also the prophet Isaiah was there, they cried out to God. They were as prepared for battle as they could be, but they were not gonna survive, they would not be able to with withstand a siege, not in their own strength. And, so, they cried out to God and God came. So, according to second Chronicles 33, “then the Lord sent a messenger who destroyed every warrior, leader, and officer in the camp of the Assyrian king. When Sennacherib went home in disgrace, he entered the temple of his God and his own sons killed him with the sword. This is how the Lord rescued Hezekiah and the citizens of Jerusalem from the power of Assyria’s king Sennacherib and all others giving them rest on all sides.” So, what we see in this story is vigilant preparation, totally getting as prepared as possible and a total awareness of what’s actually going on, married to a complete understanding that no matter how prepared they might be, no matter how much information or intel that they have, only the strength of God could lead them to victory. Let’s member this today as were facing our own battles,

Prayer:

Father, there’s probably not person within the sound of my voice that isn’t facing some sort of battle in some sort of way, and some of these are small little obstacles and some of these are what feels like a full assault on our soul or on our life. And, so, Father, show us by the power of Your Holy Spirit, how to prepare, how to be vigilant, how to not just surrender before anything starts because we’re intimidated, how to be prepared and how to know that You alone are our only hope. And may we see these taunts for what they are. They’re just trying to demoralize us into surrender because if we don’t surrender and You are our only strength and we have put all our hope in You, and we have prepared well, well then, the enemy walks in fear. It may taunt, it may try to demoralize, but it will be wiped out completely and thoroughly in the end. Help us to rest in that today Father because some of these battles are big ones. Come Holy Spirit we pray. In the name of Jesus, we ask. Amen.

My name is Gary, I live in northern Idaho and I am calling to enlist the DAB prayer family. I have been recently diagnosed with metastatic prostate cancer and it’s evidently been around me quite a while because it has progressed to a lot of my skeletal system and the Lord has recently orchestrated everything to get me to a hospital, to the medical center coeur d'alene Idaho where everybody is being the hands and feet of Jesus. So, He’s using everybody, and He’s even given me the opportunity to follow the great commission. So, He’s placed me in the right place, but I am enlisting the prayer warriors of the DAB and to the praying army. Alright? So, I do love and appreciate you guys. I’ve been listening mostly for the last six years. I’ve been through the bible most of the time with these past six years and I’m going through it with you again. Today is the 28th of July. The 20th of July is when I received the final diagnosis. I had suspicions before but now I absolutely know the Lord of heavens armies is on my side and we are…we have established a beachhead against the enemy and we are fighting back tooth and nail. There’s no way I am throwing in the towel on this. I have thrown down the gauntlet and I am fighting side-by-side with Jesus to vanquish this enemy, kick it back to where it came from and be cancer free again. I say again because I went to cancer 40 years ago and I’m here 40 years later to tell you about it, cancer free from that cancer.

Hello, my beautiful Daily Audio Bible brothers and sisters. This is Suzanne calling from Albuquerque. Well, I’m calling today because I’m scared. I…oh…I didn’t go to the doctor when I should have because I had changed…got on affordable care and it was such a mess that I just…anyway the bottom line is I happen to have an ovarian cyst and I finally went to the doctor and they find it’s grown to 7mm and it’s fairly large at this point and I’ve got some pain in that area and I’m scared. She’s…she wants to…I don’t know what they’re going to do but she’s…they got me in there right away as soon as I told her what was going on and then she called on Saturday and they’re gonna send me to a gynecologist and I’m really worried about the medical bills and I should be more worried about my life. I am worried about my life. I just had…I’m just scared and I’m just asking for your prayers. Yeah…I’m…usually when I get scared it’s…it’s…there’s no reason to get scared but, you know, it always turns out good but, you know, anyway I’m just asking for your prayers. I’m worried and I’m scared, and I just have a lot of more…a lot more things I wanted to do with my life. So, please lift me up in prayer about this and I just really hope that it’s all going to be okay and that I’m gonna be okay and I’ll be around for a while longer. Okay, thank you. Oh and the…Angel thank you so much for lifting me up in prayer and all of you who haven’t called in, I know you’ve been praying for me. There’s a gentleman that I think you thought that I was…

Gracious Father, we lift You up, we magnify Your name. Lord we ask You to touch Demetrius, let him know that You are the one that’s carrying him, let him know that You love him so much that You are right there if he’d only trust You. Oh Lord don’t throw in the towel but throw the towel on prayer. Throw the towel on the floor and begin to pray until something happens. Oh Lord You let him know that You’re right there, that You are a God that can do anything but fail. You’re an almighty God and an awesome God. Lord I ask that You touch his mind, that You touch him and let him know that You’re there. Oh Lord let him know not to quit knocking but to continue on and see what the ends going to be. Good morning DABber’s, this is Walta the Burning Bush that will not be Devoured for the Glory of our God and King. I’m calling today for our sister who called in. Her son is facing a charge, he might go to jail. __ God is not gonna let that happen. I think his name is David. I’m not sure. And I know he’s been given…he’s given his life to Christ. And, so, sister, I want you to know that I’m praying for your son right now. I’m standing in the gap for him and praying that God will offer favor, will give him favor in the name of Jesus and that this will just be part of his testimony I pray. Also pray for our brother who walked his dog and God pulled off, I guess on his bike and he ended up breaking a bone in his shoulder. And I pray for recovery, full recovery in the name of Jesus. Family today I am praising God because 2014, 2015 was a year that from 2014 between 2014 and 2015, I did not know I would ever see my son again, my younger son. My ex-husband had taken him to Romania and refusing to send him back to the United States. And, so, I stayed away from my boy for like 11 months praying that he would return. My DAB family prayed to for him to return and in 2015 July, my son, I think is was June, he was brought back to me and this year I’m celebrating his 12th birthday in a day or so on the 30th of July and I just want to praise God for answered prayers. And he’s such a wonderful son. Se is an A honor’s student, a Boy Scout, just a great boy all around and I just want to thank you all for praying for me that time and I just remember God’s mercy’s and his grace and praising god for having my child. Love you guys. Talk…

2 Chronicles 33:14-34:33

14 After this, Manasseh rebuilt the outer wall of David’s City, west of the Gihon Spring in the valley, extending as far as the entrance of the Fish Gate, enclosing the elevated fortress[a] and greatly increasing its height. He also installed military commanders in all the fortified cities of Judah. 15 He removed the foreign gods and the idol from the Lord’s temple, as well as all the altars he had built on the hill of the Lord’s temple and in Jerusalem, dumping them outside the city. 16 He restored the Lord’s altar, offered well-being sacrifices and thank offerings on it, and ordered the people of Judah to worship the Lord, Israel’s God. 17 The people, however, still sacrificed at the shrines, but only to the Lord their God. 18 The rest of Manasseh’s deeds, including his prayer to God and what the seers told him in the name of the Lord, Israel’s God, are found in the records of Israel’s kings. 19 Manasseh’s prayer and its answer, all his sin and unfaithfulness, and the locations of the shrines, sacred poles,[b] and idols he set up before he submitted are written in the records of Hozai.[c] 20 Manasseh lay down with his ancestors and was buried in his palace. His son Amon succeeded him as king.

Amon rules

21 Amon was 22 years old when he became king, and he ruled for two years in Jerusalem. 22 He did what was evil in the Lord’s eyes, just as his father Manasseh had done. He sacrificed to all the idols his father had made and worshipped them. 23 But unlike his father Manasseh, Amon didn’t submit before the Lord; instead, Amon increased his guilt. 24 His own officials plotted against him and killed him in his palace. 25 The people of the land then executed all those who had plotted against King Amon and made his son Josiah the next king.

Josiah rules

34 Josiah was 8 years old when he became king, and he ruled for thirty-one years in Jerusalem. He did what was right in the Lord’s eyes and walked in the ways of his ancestor David, not deviating from it even a bit to the right or left. In the eighth year of his rule, while he was just a boy, he began to seek the God of his ancestor David, and in the twelfth year he began purifying Judah and Jerusalem of the shrines, the sacred poles,[d] idols, and images. Under his supervision, the altars for the Baals were torn down, and the incense altars that were above them were smashed. He broke up the sacred poles, idols, and images, grinding them to dust and scattering them over the graves of those who had sacrificed to them. He burned the bones of the priests on their altars, purifying Judah and Jerusalem. In the cities of Manasseh, Ephraim, and Simeon, all the way up to Naphtali, he removed their temples,[e] tore down the altars and sacred poles, ground the idols to dust, and smashed all the incense altars throughout the land of Israel. Then Josiah returned to Jerusalem.

Josiah repairs the temple

In the eighteenth year of his rule, after he had purified the land and the temple, Josiah sent Azaliah’s son Shaphan, Maaseiah the mayor of the city, and Joahaz’s son Joah the secretary to repair the Lord his God’s temple. When they came to the high priest Hilkiah, they delivered the money that had been collected in God’s temple by the levitical gatekeepers from Manasseh, Ephraim, and the rest of Israel, as well as from Judah, Benjamin, and the residents of Jerusalem. 10 They handed it over to the supervisors[f] in charge of the Lord’s temple, who in turn paid it to those working on, repairing, and restoring the Lord’s temple. 11 They then gave it to the carpenters and the builders to pay for quarried stone and lumber for rafters and beams in the buildings the kings of Judah had neglected. 12 The men worked conscientiously under the supervision of Jahath and Obadiah, who were Levites descended from Merari, and Zechariah and Meshullam from the Kohathites. The Levites, all of whom were accomplished musicians, 13 were also in charge of the laborers and all the workers, no matter what their jobs, while some of the Levites served as scribes, officials, and guards.

The Instruction scroll

14 While they were bringing out the money that had been brought into the Lord’s temple, Hilkiah the priest found the Instruction scroll that the Lord had given through Moses. 15 Hilkiah told the secretary Shaphan, “I have found the Instruction scroll in the Lord’s temple.”

Then Hilkiah turned the scroll over to Shaphan, 16 who brought it to the king with this report: “Your servants are doing everything you’ve asked them to do. 17 They have released the money that was found in the Lord’s temple and have handed it over to the supervisors and the workers.” 18 Then the secretary Shaphan told the king, “The priest Hilkiah has given me a scroll,” and he read it out loud before the king.

19 As soon as the king heard what the Instruction scroll said, he ripped his clothes. 20 The king ordered Hilkiah, Shaphan’s son Ahikam, Micah’s son Abdon, the secretary Shaphan, and the royal officer Asaiah as follows: 21 “Go and ask the Lord on my behalf, and on behalf of those who still remain in Israel and Judah, concerning the contents of this scroll that has been found. The Lord must be furious with us because our ancestors failed to obey the Lord’s word and do everything written in this scroll.”

22 So Hilkiah and the royal officials went to the prophetess Huldah. She was married to Shallum, Tokhath’s son and Hasrah’s grandson, who was in charge of the wardrobe. She lived in Jerusalem in the second district. When they spoke to her, 23 she replied, “This is what the Lord, Israel’s God, says: Tell this to the man who sent you to me: 24 This is what the Lord says: I am about to bring disaster on this place and its citizens—all the curses written in the scroll that they have read to Judah’s king. 25 My anger burns against this place, never to be quenched, because they’ve deserted me and have burned incense to other gods, angering me by everything they have done.[g] 26 But also say this to the king of Judah, who sent you to question the Lord: This is what the Lord, Israel’s God, says about the message you’ve just heard: 27 Because your heart was broken and you submitted before the Lord when you heard what he said against this place and its citizens,[h] and because you ripped your clothes and cried before me, I have listened to you, declares the Lord. 28 I will gather you to your ancestors, and you will go to your grave in peace. You won’t experience the disaster I am about to bring on this place and its citizens.”

When they reported Huldah’s words to the king, 29 the king sent a message and gathered together all the elders of Judah and Jerusalem. 30 Then the king went up to the Lord’s temple, together with all the people of Judah and all the citizens of Jerusalem, the priests and the Levites, and all the people, young and old alike. There the king read out loud all the words of the covenant scroll that had been found in the Lord’s temple. 31 The king stood in his place and made a covenant with the Lord that he would follow the Lord by keeping his commandments, his instructions, and his regulations with all his heart and all his being, in order to fulfill the words of the covenant that were written in this scroll. 32 Then he made everyone found in Jerusalem and Benjamin join in a similar promise. The citizens of Jerusalem lived according to the covenant made with God, the God of their ancestors. 33 Josiah got rid of all the detestable idols from all the regions that belonged to the Israelites, and he made everyone who lived in Israel serve the Lord their God. As long as Josiah lived, they didn’t turn away from following the Lord God of their ancestors.

Warning against divisions

17 Brothers and sisters, I urge you to watch out for people who create divisions and problems against the teaching that you learned. Keep away from them. 18 People like that aren’t serving the Lord. They are serving their own feelings. They deceive the hearts of innocent people with smooth talk and flattery. 19 The news of your obedience has reached everybody, so I’m happy for you. But I want you to be wise about what’s good, and innocent about what’s evil. 20 The God of peace will soon crush Satan[a] under your feet. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.

Greetings from Paul’s coworkers

21 Timothy my coworker says hello to you, and Lucius, Jason, and Sosipater, my relatives. 22 I’m Tertius, and I’m writing this letter to you in the Lord—hello! 23 Gaius, who is host to me and to the whole church, says hello to you. Erastus the city treasurer says hello to you, along with our brother Quartus.[b]

Final prayer

25 May the glory be to God who can strengthen you with my good news and the message that I preach about Jesus Christ. He can strengthen you with the announcement of the secret[c] that was kept quiet for a long time. 26 Now that secret is revealed through what the prophets wrote. It is made known to the Gentiles[d] in order to lead to their faithful obedience based on the command of the eternal God. 27 May the glory be to God, who alone is wise! May the glory be to him through Jesus Christ forever! Amen.

Psalm 26

Of David.

26 Establish justice for me, Lord,
because I have walked with integrity.
I’ve trusted the Lord without wavering.
Examine me, Lord; put me to the test!
Purify[a] my mind[b] and my heart.
Because your faithful love is right in front of me—
I walk in your truth!
I don’t spend time with people up to no good;
I don’t keep company with liars.
I detest the company of evildoers,
and I don’t sit with wicked people.
I wash my hands—they are innocent!
I walk all around your altar, Lord,
proclaiming out loud my thanks,
declaring all your wonderful deeds!
I love the beauty[c] of your house, Lord;
I love the place where your glory resides.

Don’t gather me[d] up with the sinners,
taking my life along with violent people
10 in whose hands are evil schemes,

11 But me? I walk with integrity.
Save me! Have mercy on me!

2 Chronicles 32:1-33:13

Sennacherib’s invasion

32 After these things and these faithful acts, Assyria’s King Sennacherib invaded Judah and attacked its fortified cities, intending to capture them. When Hezekiah realized that Sennacherib also planned on fighting Jerusalem, he consulted with his officials and soldiers about stopping up the springs outside the city, and they supported him. A large force gathered to stop up all the springs and the streams that flowed through the land. “Why should the kings of Assyria come and find plenty of water?” they asked. Hezekiah vigorously rebuilt all the broken sections of the wall, erected towers, constructed another wall outside the first, reinforced the terrace of David’s City, and made a large supply of weapons and shields. He appointed military officers over the troops, assembled them in the square of the city gate, and spoke these words of encouragement: “Be brave and be strong! Don’t let the king of Assyria and all those warriors he brings with him scare you or cause you dismay, because our forces are greater than his.[a] All he has is human strength, but we have the Lord our God, who will help us fight our battles!”

The troops trusted Judah’s King Hezekiah.

After this Assyria’s King Sennacherib, who was attacking Lachish with all his forces, sent his servants to Jerusalem with the following message for Judah’s King Hezekiah and all the people of Judah who were in Jerusalem:

10 This is what Assyria’s King Sennacherib says: What makes you so confident that you stay put in Jerusalem while it is being attacked? 11 Obviously, Hezekiah has fooled you into surrendering yourselves to death by hunger and thirst when he says, “The Lord our God will rescue us from Assyria’s king.” 12 Isn’t this the same Hezekiah who got rid of his shrines and altars, and then demanded of Judah and Jerusalem, “You must worship and burn incense before only one altar”? 13 Don’t you know what I and my predecessors have done to the people of other nations? Were any of the gods of these other nations able to rescue their lands from my power? 14 Which one of any of the gods of these nations that my predecessors destroyed was able to rescue them from my power? So why should your god be able to rescue you from my power? 15 Don’t let Hezekiah seduce you like fools. Don’t believe him! No god of any other nation or kingdom has been able to rescue their people from me or from my predecessors. No, your gods won’t rescue you from my power.

16 The Assyrian king’s servants continued to make fun of the Lord God and his servant Hezekiah. 17 He wrote other letters insulting the Lord God of Israel, defying him by saying, “Just as the gods of the nations in other countries couldn’t rescue their people from my power, Hezekiah’s god won’t be able to rescue his people from my power.” 18 Then they shouted loudly in Hebrew[b] at the people of Jerusalem gathered on the wall, in an attempt to frighten and demoralize them, in order to capture the city. 19 They spoke about the God of Jerusalem as though he were the work of human hands, like the gods of the other peoples of the earth. 20 King Hezekiah and the prophet Isaiah, Amoz’s son, prayed about this, crying out to heaven. 21 Then the Lord sent a messenger who destroyed every warrior, leader, and officer in the camp of the Assyrian king. When Sennacherib went home in disgrace, he entered the temple of his god, and his own sons killed him with a sword. 22 This is how the Lord rescued Hezekiah and the citizens of Jerusalem from the power of Assyria’s King Sennacherib, and all others, giving them rest[c] on all sides. 23 Many people brought offerings to the Lord in Jerusalem and costly gifts to Judah’s King Hezekiah, who was highly regarded by all the nations from then on.

Hezekiah’s illness

24 Around that same time, Hezekiah became deathly ill and prayed to the Lord, who answered him with a miraculous sign. 25 But Hezekiah was too proud to respond appropriately to the kindness he had received, and he, along with Judah and Jerusalem, experienced anger. 26 However, Hezekiah and the citizens of Jerusalem humbled themselves in their pride, and so they didn’t experience the Lord’s anger for the rest of Hezekiah’s reign.

27 Hezekiah became very wealthy and greatly respected. He made storehouses for his silver, gold, precious stones, spices, shields, and other valuables. 28 He made barns to store the harvest of grain, wine, and olive oil; stalls for all kinds of cattle; and pens for flocks. 29 He acquired towns for himself and many flocks and herds because God had given him great wealth. 30 Hezekiah was the one who blocked the upper outlet of the waters of the Gihon Spring, channeling them down to the west side of David’s City. Hezekiah succeeded in all that he did, 31 even in the matter of the ambassadors sent from Babylonian officials to find out about the miraculous sign that occurred in the land, when God had abandoned him in order to test him and to discover what was in his heart.

32 The rest of Hezekiah’s deeds, including his faithfulness, are written in the vision of the prophet Isaiah, Amoz’s son, in the records of Israel’s and Judah’s kings. 33 Hezekiah lay down with his ancestors and was buried in the upper area of the tombs of David’s sons. All Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem honored him at his death. His son Manasseh succeeded him as king.

Manasseh rules

33 Manasseh was 12 years old when he became king, and he ruled for fifty-five years in Jerusalem. He did what was evil in the Lord’s eyes, imitating the detestable practices of the nations that the Lord had driven out before the Israelites. He rebuilt the shrines that his father Hezekiah had destroyed, set up altars for the Baals, and made sacred poles.[d] He bowed down to all the stars in the sky and worshipped them. He even built altars in the Lord’s temple, the very place the Lord was speaking about when he said, “My name will remain in Jerusalem forever.” Manasseh built altars for all the stars in the sky in both courtyards of the Lord’s temple. He burned his own sons alive in the Ben-hinnom Valley, consulted sign readers, fortune-tellers, and sorcerers, and used mediums and diviners. He did much evil in the Lord’s eyes and made him angry.

Manasseh set up the carved image he had made in God’s temple, the very temple God had spoken about to David and his son Solomon, saying: In this temple and in Jerusalem, which I have selected out of all Israel’s tribes, I will put my name forever. I will never again remove Israel from the fertile land I gave to your ancestors, provided they carefully do everything I have commanded them—keeping all the Instruction, the regulations, and the case laws given through Moses. In this way Manasseh led Judah and the residents of Jerusalem into doing even more evil than the nations that the Lord had wiped out before the Israelites.

10 The Lord spoke to Manasseh and his people, but they wouldn’t listen. 11 So the Lord brought the army commanders of Assyria’s king against them. They captured Manasseh with hooks, bound him with bronze chains, and carried him off to Babylon. 12 During his distress, Manasseh made peace with the Lord his God, truly submitting himself to the God of his ancestors. 13 He prayed, and God was moved by his request. God listened to Manasseh’s prayer and restored him to his rule in Jerusalem. Then Manasseh knew that the Lord was the true God.

Romans 15:23-16:9

23 But now, since I don’t have any place to work in these regions anymore, and since I’ve wanted to come to see you for many years, 24 I’ll visit you when I go to Spain. I hope to see you while I’m passing through. And I hope you will send me on my way there, after I have first been reenergized by some time in your company.

25 But now I’m going to Jerusalem, to serve God’s people. 26 Macedonia and Achaia have been happy to make a contribution for the poor among God’s people in Jerusalem. 27 They were happy to do this, and they are actually in debt to God’s people in Jerusalem. If the Gentiles got a share of the Jewish people’s spiritual resources, they ought to minister to them with material resources. 28 So then after I have finished this job and have safely delivered the final amount of the Gentiles’ offering to them, I will leave for Spain, visiting you on the way. 29 And I know that when I come to you I will come with the fullest blessing of Christ.

30 Brothers and sisters, I urge you, through our Lord Jesus Christ and through the love of the Spirit, to join me in my struggles in your prayers to God for me. 31 Pray that I will be rescued from the people in Judea who don’t believe. Also, pray that my service for Jerusalem will be acceptable to God’s people there 32 so that I can come to you with joy by God’s will and be reenergized with your company. 33 May the God of peace be with you all. Amen.

Introduction to Phoebe

16 I’m introducing our sister Phoebe to you, who is a servant[a] of the church in Cenchreae. Welcome her in the Lord in a way that is worthy of God’s people, and give her whatever she needs from you, because she herself has been a sponsor of many people, myself included.

Greetings to Roman Christians

Say hello to Prisca and Aquila, my coworkers in Christ Jesus, who risked their own necks for my life. I’m not the only one who thanks God for them, but all the churches of the Gentiles do the same. Also say hello to the church that meets in their house. Say hello to Epaenetus, my dear friend, who was the first convert[b] in Asia for Christ. Say hello to Mary, who has worked very hard for you. Say hello to Andronicus and Junia, my relatives and my fellow prisoners. They are prominent among the apostles, and they were in Christ before me. Say hello to Ampliatus, my dear friend in the Lord. Say hello to Urbanus, our coworker in Christ, and my dear friend Stachys.

2 Chronicles 30:1-31:21, Romans 15:1-22, Psalms 25:1-15, Proverbs 20:13-15

Today is the 1st day of August. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I’m Brian. It is wonderful to be here with you today as we greet the new month, as we step into it, this eighth month of the year. How exciting is that? We have made this journey seven full months and now we step into the eighth month of the year. Of course, where in the middle of the week basically. So, we’re still in the same week, brand new month, picking up where we left off yesterday. We’re reading from the common English Bible this week. Second Chronicles chapters 30 and 31.

Commentary:

Alright. So, yesterday from the book of Romans we were talking about unity and uniformity and the postures we should hold toward each other as brothers and sisters in the faith, and that thought is kind of carried over today as we continue through the book of Romans. As we mentioned before, this gives us insight into some of the struggles that the church was grappling with at its formation and some of struggles that we’re still grappling with today, if not even worse today. Like, in Paul’s time there wasn’t a plethora, like literally over 40,000 Christian denominations and very divergent worship styles. Church had just begun to form, but as we’ve mentioned on a number of occasions, there’s plenty of discussion, vigorous discussion happening about exactly who’s allowed to be in the church and exactly what they would need to do to achieve inclusion in the church. Paul’s argument…and Paul’s argument was controversial, by the way, at least from a Hebrew perspective. Paul’s argument was that anybody could be in the church, like anybody could become a disciple of Jesus Christ, anyone who believed, even people who weren’t Hebrew or Jewish, which meant Gentiles. And we’ve kind of unpacked that on a number of occasions. Not everybody agreed with that. There was a heated disagreement about it. There was a church council about it that had unbelievable implications because once the church decided that Gentiles could be included without converting to Judaism first, they were no longer considered a sect of Judaism, like, they were a standalone thing, rejected by the Romans and rejected by the Jews. Like, it because an incredible amount of persecution. So, it was an incredible struggle early on. And we’ve talked about how the Jewish believers, they saw Jesus as the savior of the Jews, and He was continuing to Hebrew story of God with his chosen people. So, that’s why you would need to convert to Judaism and follow Jesus. But as a trained Pharisee, Paul knew all of those arguments. He had lived and studied and had tried to live within that context but then Paul began to realize Jesus wasn’t just the savior of the Jews, he was the Savior of the world. So, quoting Paul from our reading today, “I’m saying that Christ became a servant of those who are circumcised for the sake of God’s truth in order to confirm the promises given to the ancestors and so that the Gentiles could glorify God for his mercy. As it is written because of this I will confess you among the Gentiles and I will sing praises to your name,” which is a quote from Psalm 18. So, they were wrestling with this, we are wrestling with this. And it kind of comes down to a core question that we just have to ask ourselves. Can a person who believes in Jesus but doesn’t see things theologically the same way that I do on certain points or does things that I wouldn’t or will that I would consider wrong or the lives in a way that I don’t approve of, can they still be a believer, a Christian? So now, unlike the early church we have many flavors and many stripes - 40,000 Christian denominations on the planet today - and most of the reasons that there is division is over theological points of disagreement and worship style and pretty much everybody believes their holding on and defending the true faith. So, even as this conflict was so small in its infancy, Paul considered that to be basically a waste of energy because we can judge each other all we want, it has no consequence. We can tell somebody they’re going to hell or we can tell somebody they’re not and it has no consequence. We have no say. There is only one final judge and us spouting off at the mouth, especially in condemnation and judgment like that is dangerous, because Jesus said, “we’ll be judged by the way we judge.” So, Paul gave us a posture and I’ll quote him straight from Romans 15, “May the God of endurance and encouragement give you the same attitude toward each other, similar to Christ Jesus attitude. That way you can glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, together with one voice. So, welcome each other in the same way that Christ also welcomed you for God’s glory.” So, remembering the guidance of the apostle Paul can help us when our grace has run out, right, when our patience is done for our brothers and sisters who are doing whatever they’re doing that we do not agree with. What we find in those moments is, yeah, things well up inside of us and we do want to argue it out and wrestle it out and that’s fine, but we understand very quickly that what we’re arguing about is our theological interpretation. Like, every time we win one of those battles, we haven’t saved God’s life. Like every doctrinal battle that we fight, whether we win or lose that battle, we haven’t rescued God from the brink. So rather than fighting those battles all the time so that we can find out what it is that we really think, we can fall on God’s mercy as we must. And Paul suggests that we should join together with one voice giving praise and glory to God the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Prayer:

Father, the reality is interesting in this community because we truly are as diverse as Your church is on planet Earth today. We swim in every stream imaginable in many different expressions all over the earth and yet we come together every day and find common ground and love for each other. I have never seen this happen before outside of this community. And, so, I worship You for that, we thank You for that because we’ve all come here for one thing, to allow Your word to speak for itself and then to do our own wrestling about it. But what we find over and over and over is that we have to tread lightly, that Your Holy Spirit must be present, that there is a narrow path that leads to life, and that we won’t find it by looking at what everyone else is doing. We will find by following You and not comparing how we are following You to have someone else might be. We are not the judge, and neither are they. We are responsible to follow You and I love that we do that here, that we love each other. Father help us to not only experience that here inside this community but that we would turn outward with this same love and perpetuate it all over the earth replacing darkness with light by the very fact that we are present and present to You and Your leadership. Come Holy Spirit we pray. Breathe on Your church anew we ask in the name of Jesus. Amen.

2 Chronicles 30-31

Hezekiah’s Passover

30 Then Hezekiah sent word to all Israel and Judah, and wrote letters to Ephraim and Manasseh as well, inviting them to the Lord’s temple in Jerusalem to celebrate the Passover of the Lord God of Israel. The king, his officials, and the entire Jerusalem congregation had decided to celebrate Passover in the second month.[a] They had been unable to celebrate it at the usual time because the priests had failed to make themselves holy in sufficient numbers, and the people hadn’t gathered at Jerusalem. Since the plan seemed good to the king and the entire congregation, they made arrangements to circulate an announcement throughout all Israel, from Beer-sheba to Dan, to come to Jerusalem to celebrate the Passover of the Lord God of Israel, because they hadn’t often kept it as written. Under the authority of the king, runners took letters from the king and his officials throughout all Israel and Judah, which read:

People of Israel! Return to the Lord, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, so that he may return to those of you who remain, who have escaped capture by the Assyrian kings. Don’t be like your ancestors and relatives, who were unfaithful to the Lord, the God of their ancestors, so that he made them an object of horror as you can see for yourselves. So don’t be stubborn like your ancestors. Surrender to the Lord! Come to God’s sanctuary, which he has made holy forever, and serve the Lord your God so that he won’t be angry with you any longer. When you return to the Lord, your relatives and your children will receive mercy from their captors and be allowed to return to this land. The Lord your God is merciful and compassionate. He won’t withdraw his presence from you if you return to him.

10 So the runners went from town to town in Ephraim and Manasseh, all the way to Zebulun. But they were laughed at and made fun of. 11 Even so, some people from Asher, Manasseh, and Zebulun were submissive and came to Jerusalem. 12 Moreover, God’s power was at work in Judah, unifying them to do what the king and his officials had ordered by the Lord’s command.

13 A huge crowd gathered in Jerusalem to celebrate the Festival of Unleavened Bread in the second month. A very large congregation gathered. 14 First, they removed the altars in Jerusalem, and hauled off the incense altars and dumped them in the Kidron Valley. 15 They slaughtered the Passover lambs on the fourteenth day of the second month. Ashamed of themselves, the priests and the Levites made themselves holy and brought entirely burned offerings to the Lord’s temple. 16 They now took their places as laid out in the Instruction from Moses the man of God, and the priests splashed the blood they received from the Levites against the altar. 17 Since many in the congregation hadn’t made themselves holy, the Levites slaughtered the Passover lambs, making them holy to the Lord for all who weren’t ceremonially clean. 18 This included most of those who had come from Ephraim, Manasseh, Issachar, and Zebulun—people who hadn’t purified themselves and so hadn’t eaten the Passover meal in the prescribed way. But Hezekiah prayed for them: “May the good Lord forgive 19 everyone who has decided to seek the true God, the Lord, the God of their ancestors, even though they aren’t ceremonially clean by sanctuary standards.” 20 The Lord heard Hezekiah and healed the people. 21 So the Israelites in Jerusalem joyfully celebrated the Festival of Unleavened Bread for seven days, with the Levites and the priests praising the Lord every day, accompanied by the Lord’s mighty instruments. 22 Hezekiah congratulated all the Levites who had performed so skillfully for the Lord. They feasted throughout the seven days of the festival, sacrificing well-being offerings and praising the Lord, the God of their ancestors.

23 Then the whole congregation agreed to celebrate another seven days, which they joyfully did. 24 Judah’s King Hezekiah contributed one thousand bulls and seven thousand sheep for the congregation, while the officials provided another thousand bulls and ten thousand sheep, and great numbers of priests made themselves holy. 25 Then the whole congregation of Judah rejoiced, as did the priests and the Levites, the whole congregation from Israel, the immigrants who had come from the land of Israel, and those who lived in Judah. 26 There was great joy in Jerusalem. Nothing like this had taken place in Jerusalem since the days of Israel’s King Solomon, David’s son. 27 Then the levitical priests blessed the people, and their voice was heard when their prayer reached God’s holy dwelling in heaven.

31 When all of these things were finished, all of the Israelites who were present went out to the cities of Judah, smashed the sacred pillars, cut down the sacred poles,[b] and completely destroyed the shrines and altars throughout Judah as well as Benjamin, Ephraim, and Manasseh. Then all the Israelites returned to their individual homes in their own cities.

Hezekiah’s reform

Hezekiah reappointed the priests and the Levites, each to their divisions and their tasks, to make entirely burned offerings and well-being sacrifices, to serve, to give thanks, and to offer praise in the gates of the Lord’s camp. As his portion, the king personally contributed the entirely burned offerings for the morning and evening sacrifices, as well as the entirely burned offerings for the Sabbaths, new moons, and festivals, as written in the Lord’s Instruction. He ordered the people living in Jerusalem to provide the required portion for the priests and the Levites so they could devote themselves to the Lord’s Instruction. As soon as the order was issued, the Israelites generously gave the best of their grain, new wine, oil, honey, and all their crops—a tenth of everything, a huge amount. The people of Israel and Judah, living in the cities of Judah, also brought in a tenth of their herds and flocks and a tenth of the items that had been dedicated to the Lord their God, stacking it up in piles. They began stacking up the piles in the third month[c] and finished them in the seventh.[d] When Hezekiah and the officials saw the piles, they blessed the Lord and his people Israel.

When Hezekiah asked the priests and Levites about the piles, 10 the chief priest Azariah, who was from Zadok’s family, answered, “Ever since the people started bringing contributions to the Lord’s temple we’ve had enough to eat with plenty to spare. The Lord has definitely blessed his people! There’s a lot left over.”

11 So Hezekiah ordered them to prepare storerooms in the Lord’s temple. When they finished preparing them, 12 the priests conscientiously brought in the contributions, the tenth-part gifts, and the dedicated things. Conaniah, a Levite, was put in charge, assisted by his brother Shimei, 13 while Jehiel, Azaziah, Nahath, Asahel, Jerimoth, Jozabad, Eliel, Ismachiah, Mahath, and Benaiah served as supervisors under them, as appointed by King Hezekiah and Azariah the official in charge of God’s temple. 14 The Levite Kore, Imnah’s son, who was keeper of the east gate, was in charge of the spontaneous gifts to God. He was responsible for distributing the contribution reserved for the Lord and the dedicated gifts. 15 Eden, Miniamin, Jeshua, Shemaiah, Amariah, and Shecaniah faithfully assisted him regarding[e] the priests by distributing the portions to their relatives, old and young alike, by divisions. 16 Additionally, they also distributed daily rations to those males, registered by genealogy, three years old and older, all who entered the Lord’s temple to carry out their daily duties as their divisions required. 17 They also distributed to those priests registered by their families, and to Levites 20 years of age and older according to their divisional responsibilities. 18 The official genealogy included all their small children, their wives, their sons, and their daughters—the entire congregation—for they had faithfully made themselves holy. 19 As for Aaron’s descendants, the priests who lived in the outskirts of the cities, men were assigned to distribute portions to every male among the priests and to every Levite listed in the genealogical records. 20 This is what Hezekiah did throughout all Judah, doing what the Lord his God considered good, right, and true. 21 Everything that Hezekiah began to do for the service of God’s temple, whether by the Instruction or the commands, in order to seek his God, he did successfully and with all his heart.

Romans 15:1-22

15 We who are powerful need to be patient with the weakness of those who don’t have power, and not please ourselves. Each of us should please our neighbors for their good in order to build them up. Christ didn’t please himself, but, as it is written, The insults of those who insulted you fell on me.[a] Whatever was written in the past was written for our instruction so that we could have hope through endurance and through the encouragement of the scriptures. May the God of endurance and encouragement give you the same attitude toward each other, similar to Christ Jesus’ attitude. That way you can glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ together with one voice.

So welcome each other, in the same way that Christ also welcomed you, for God’s glory. I’m saying that Christ became a servant of those who are circumcised for the sake of God’s truth, in order to confirm the promises given to the ancestors, and so that the Gentiles could glorify God for his mercy. As it is written,

Because of this I will confess you among the Gentiles,
and I will sing praises to your name.[b]

10 And again, it says,

Rejoice, Gentiles, with his people.[c]

11 And again,

Praise the Lord, all you Gentiles,
and all the people should sing his praises.[d]

12 And again, Isaiah says,

There will be a root of Jesse,
who will also rise to rule the Gentiles.
The Gentiles will place their hope in him.[e]

13 May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in faith so that you overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Paul’s ministry to the Gentiles

14 My brothers and sisters, I myself am convinced that you yourselves are full of goodness, filled with all knowledge, and are able to teach each other. 15 But I’ve written to you in a sort of daring way, partly to remind you of what you already know. I’m writing to you in this way because of the grace that was given to me by God. 16 It helps me to be a minister of Christ Jesus to the Gentiles. I’m working as a priest of God’s gospel so that the offering of the Gentiles can be acceptable and made holy by the Holy Spirit. 17 So in Christ Jesus I brag about things that have to do with God. 18 I don’t dare speak about anything except what Christ has done through me to bring about the obedience of the Gentiles. He did it by what I’ve said and what I’ve done, 19 by the power of signs and wonders, and by the power of God’s Spirit. So I’ve completed the circuit of preaching Christ’s gospel from Jerusalem all the way around to Illyricum. 20 In this way, I have a goal to preach the gospel where they haven’t heard of Christ yet, so that I won’t be building on someone else’s foundation. 21 Instead, as it’s written, Those who hadn’t been told about him will see, and those who hadn’t heard will understand.[f]

Psalm 25:1-15

Psalm 25[a]

Of David.

25 I offer my life[b] to you, Lord.
My God, I trust you.
Please don’t let me be put to shame!
Don’t let my enemies rejoice over me!
For that matter,
don’t let anyone who hopes in you
be put to shame;
instead, let those who are treacherous without excuse be put to shame.

Make your ways known to me, Lord;
teach me your paths.
Lead me in your truth—teach it to me—
because you are the God who saves me.
I put my hope in you all day long.
Lord, remember your compassion and faithful love—
they are forever!
But don’t remember the sins of my youth or my wrongdoing.
Remember me only according to your faithful love
for the sake of your goodness, Lord.

The Lord is good and does the right thing;
he teaches sinners which way they should go.
God guides the weak to justice,
teaching them his way.
10 All the Lord’s paths are loving and faithful
for those who keep his covenant and laws.
11 Please, for the sake of your good name, Lord, forgive my sins, which are many!

12 Where are the ones who honor the Lord?
God will teach them which path to take.
13 They will live a good life,
and their descendants will possess the land.
14 The Lord counsels those who honor him;
he makes his covenant known to them.
15 My eyes are always looking to the Lord
because he will free my feet from the net.

Proverbs 20:13-15

13 Don’t love sleep or you will be poor;
stay alert and you will have plenty to eat.
14 The buyer says, “Bad, bad,”
but then goes away and brags.
15 Much gold and many pearls exist,
but wise speech is the most precious jewel.
