Job 23-27

Job

23 Then Job replied:

“Even today my complaint(A) is bitter;(B)
his hand[a] is heavy in spite of[b] my groaning.(C)
If only I knew where to find him;
if only I could go to his dwelling!(D)
I would state my case(E) before him
and fill my mouth with arguments.(F)
I would find out what he would answer me,(G)
and consider what he would say to me.
Would he vigorously oppose me?(H)
No, he would not press charges against me.(I)
There the upright(J) can establish their innocence before him,(K)
and there I would be delivered forever from my judge.(L)

“But if I go to the east, he is not there;
if I go to the west, I do not find him.
When he is at work in the north, I do not see him;
when he turns to the south, I catch no glimpse of him.(M)
10 But he knows the way that I take;(N)
when he has tested me,(O) I will come forth as gold.(P)
11 My feet have closely followed his steps;(Q)
I have kept to his way without turning aside.(R)
12 I have not departed from the commands of his lips;(S)
I have treasured the words of his mouth more than my daily bread.(T)

13 “But he stands alone, and who can oppose him?(U)
He does whatever he pleases.(V)
14 He carries out his decree against me,
and many such plans he still has in store.(W)
15 That is why I am terrified before him;(X)
when I think of all this, I fear him.(Y)
16 God has made my heart faint;(Z)
the Almighty(AA) has terrified me.(AB)
17 Yet I am not silenced by the darkness,(AC)
by the thick darkness that covers my face.

24 “Why does the Almighty not set times(AD) for judgment?(AE)
Why must those who know him look in vain for such days?(AF)
There are those who move boundary stones;(AG)
they pasture flocks they have stolen.(AH)
They drive away the orphan’s donkey
and take the widow’s ox in pledge.(AI)
They thrust the needy(AJ) from the path
and force all the poor(AK) of the land into hiding.(AL)
Like wild donkeys(AM) in the desert,
the poor go about their labor(AN) of foraging food;
the wasteland(AO) provides food for their children.
They gather fodder(AP) in the fields
and glean in the vineyards(AQ) of the wicked.(AR)
Lacking clothes, they spend the night naked;
they have nothing to cover themselves in the cold.(AS)
They are drenched(AT) by mountain rains
and hug(AU) the rocks for lack of shelter.(AV)
The fatherless(AW) child is snatched(AX) from the breast;
the infant of the poor is seized(AY) for a debt.(AZ)
10 Lacking clothes, they go about naked;(BA)
they carry the sheaves,(BB) but still go hungry.
11 They crush olives among the terraces[c];
they tread the winepresses,(BC) yet suffer thirst.(BD)
12 The groans of the dying rise from the city,
and the souls of the wounded cry out for help.(BE)
But God charges no one with wrongdoing.(BF)

13 “There are those who rebel against the light,(BG)
who do not know its ways
or stay in its paths.(BH)
14 When daylight is gone, the murderer rises up,
kills(BI) the poor and needy,(BJ)
and in the night steals forth like a thief.(BK)
15 The eye of the adulterer(BL) watches for dusk;(BM)
he thinks, ‘No eye will see me,’(BN)
and he keeps his face concealed.
16 In the dark, thieves break into houses,(BO)
but by day they shut themselves in;
they want nothing to do with the light.(BP)
17 For all of them, midnight is their morning;
they make friends with the terrors(BQ) of darkness.(BR)

18 “Yet they are foam(BS) on the surface of the water;(BT)
their portion of the land is cursed,(BU)
so that no one goes to the vineyards.(BV)
19 As heat and drought snatch away the melted snow,(BW)
so the grave(BX) snatches away those who have sinned.
20 The womb forgets them,
the worm(BY) feasts on them;(BZ)
the wicked are no longer remembered(CA)
but are broken like a tree.(CB)
21 They prey on the barren and childless woman,
and to the widow they show no kindness.(CC)
22 But God drags away the mighty by his power;(CD)
though they become established,(CE) they have no assurance of life.(CF)
23 He may let them rest in a feeling of security,(CG)
but his eyes(CH) are on their ways.(CI)
24 For a little while they are exalted, and then they are gone;(CJ)
they are brought low and gathered up like all others;(CK)
they are cut off like heads of grain.(CL)

25 “If this is not so, who can prove me false
and reduce my words to nothing?”(CM)

Bildad

25 Then Bildad the Shuhite(CN) replied:

“Dominion and awe belong to God;(CO)
he establishes order in the heights of heaven.(CP)
Can his forces be numbered?
On whom does his light not rise?(CQ)
How then can a mortal be righteous before God?
How can one born of woman be pure?(CR)
If even the moon(CS) is not bright
and the stars are not pure in his eyes,(CT)
how much less a mortal, who is but a maggot—
a human being,(CU) who is only a worm!”(CV)

Job

26 Then Job replied:

“How you have helped the powerless!(CW)
How you have saved the arm that is feeble!(CX)
What advice you have offered to one without wisdom!
And what great insight(CY) you have displayed!
Who has helped you utter these words?
And whose spirit spoke from your mouth?(CZ)

“The dead are in deep anguish,(DA)
those beneath the waters and all that live in them.
The realm of the dead(DB) is naked before God;
Destruction[d](DC) lies uncovered.(DD)
He spreads out the northern skies(DE) over empty space;
he suspends the earth over nothing.(DF)
He wraps up the waters(DG) in his clouds,(DH)
yet the clouds do not burst under their weight.
He covers the face of the full moon,
spreading his clouds(DI) over it.
10 He marks out the horizon on the face of the waters(DJ)
for a boundary between light and darkness.(DK)
11 The pillars of the heavens quake,(DL)
aghast at his rebuke.
12 By his power he churned up the sea;(DM)
by his wisdom(DN) he cut Rahab(DO) to pieces.
13 By his breath the skies(DP) became fair;
his hand pierced the gliding serpent.(DQ)
14 And these are but the outer fringe of his works;
how faint the whisper(DR) we hear of him!(DS)
Who then can understand the thunder of his power?”(DT)

Job’s Final Word to His Friends

27 And Job continued his discourse:(DU)

“As surely as God lives, who has denied me justice,(DV)
the Almighty,(DW) who has made my life bitter,(DX)
as long as I have life within me,
the breath of God(DY) in my nostrils,
my lips will not say anything wicked,
and my tongue will not utter lies.(DZ)
I will never admit you are in the right;
till I die, I will not deny my integrity.(EA)
I will maintain my innocence(EB) and never let go of it;
my conscience(EC) will not reproach me as long as I live.(ED)

“May my enemy be like the wicked,(EE)
my adversary(EF) like the unjust!
For what hope have the godless(EG) when they are cut off,
when God takes away their life?(EH)
Does God listen to their cry
when distress comes upon them?(EI)
10 Will they find delight in the Almighty?(EJ)
Will they call on God at all times?

11 “I will teach you about the power of God;
the ways(EK) of the Almighty I will not conceal.(EL)
12 You have all seen this yourselves.
Why then this meaningless talk?

13 “Here is the fate God allots to the wicked,
the heritage a ruthless man receives from the Almighty:(EM)
14 However many his children,(EN) their fate is the sword;(EO)
his offspring will never have enough to eat.(EP)
15 The plague will bury those who survive him,
and their widows will not weep for them.(EQ)
16 Though he heaps up silver like dust(ER)
and clothes like piles of clay,(ES)
17 what he lays up(ET) the righteous will wear,(EU)
and the innocent will divide his silver.(EV)
18 The house(EW) he builds is like a moth’s cocoon,(EX)
like a hut(EY) made by a watchman.
19 He lies down wealthy, but will do so no more;(EZ)
when he opens his eyes, all is gone.(FA)
20 Terrors(FB) overtake him like a flood;(FC)
a tempest snatches him away in the night.(FD)
21 The east wind(FE) carries him off, and he is gone;(FF)
it sweeps him out of his place.(FG)
22 It hurls itself against him without mercy(FH)
as he flees headlong(FI) from its power.(FJ)
23 It claps its hands(FK) in derision
and hisses him out of his place.”(FL)

2 Corinthians 1:12-2:11

Paul’s Change of Plans

12 Now this is our boast: Our conscience(A) testifies that we have conducted ourselves in the world, and especially in our relations with you, with integrity[a](B) and godly sincerity.(C) We have done so, relying not on worldly wisdom(D) but on God’s grace. 13 For we do not write you anything you cannot read or understand. And I hope that, 14 as you have understood us in part, you will come to understand fully that you can boast of us just as we will boast of you in the day of the Lord Jesus.(E)

15 Because I was confident of this, I wanted to visit you(F) first so that you might benefit twice.(G) 16 I wanted to visit you on my way(H) to Macedonia(I) and to come back to you from Macedonia, and then to have you send me on my way(J) to Judea.(K) 17 Was I fickle when I intended to do this? Or do I make my plans in a worldly manner(L) so that in the same breath I say both “Yes, yes” and “No, no”?

18 But as surely as God is faithful,(M) our message to you is not “Yes” and “No.” 19 For the Son of God,(N) Jesus Christ, who was preached among you by us—by me and Silas[b](O) and Timothy(P)—was not “Yes” and “No,” but in him it has always(Q) been “Yes.” 20 For no matter how many promises(R) God has made, they are “Yes” in Christ. And so through him the “Amen”(S) is spoken by us to the glory of God.(T) 21 Now it is God who makes both us and you stand firm(U) in Christ. He anointed(V) us, 22 set his seal(W) of ownership on us, and put his Spirit in our hearts as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come.(X)

23 I call God as my witness(Y)—and I stake my life on it—that it was in order to spare you(Z) that I did not return to Corinth. 24 Not that we lord it over(AA) your faith, but we work with you for your joy, because it is by faith you stand firm.(AB) So I made up my mind that I would not make another painful visit to you.(AC) For if I grieve you,(AD) who is left to make me glad but you whom I have grieved? I wrote as I did,(AE) so that when I came I would not be distressed(AF) by those who should have made me rejoice. I had confidence(AG) in all of you, that you would all share my joy. For I wrote you(AH) out of great distress and anguish of heart and with many tears, not to grieve you but to let you know the depth of my love for you.

Forgiveness for the Offender

If anyone has caused grief,(AI) he has not so much grieved me as he has grieved all of you to some extent—not to put it too severely. The punishment(AJ) inflicted on him by the majority is sufficient. Now instead, you ought to forgive and comfort him,(AK) so that he will not be overwhelmed by excessive sorrow. I urge you, therefore, to reaffirm your love for him. Another reason I wrote you(AL) was to see if you would stand the test and be obedient in everything.(AM) 10 Anyone you forgive, I also forgive. And what I have forgiven—if there was anything to forgive—I have forgiven in the sight of Christ for your sake, 11 in order that Satan(AN) might not outwit us. For we are not unaware of his schemes.(AO)

Psalm 41

Psalm 41[a]

For the director of music. A psalm of David.

Blessed(A) are those who have regard for the weak;(B)
the Lord delivers them in times of trouble.(C)
The Lord protects(D) and preserves them—(E)
they are counted among the blessed in the land—(F)
he does not give them over to the desire of their foes.(G)
The Lord sustains them on their sickbed(H)
and restores them from their bed of illness.(I)

I said, “Have mercy(J) on me, Lord;
heal(K) me, for I have sinned(L) against you.”
My enemies say of me in malice,
“When will he die and his name perish?(M)
When one of them comes to see me,
he speaks falsely,(N) while his heart gathers slander;(O)
then he goes out and spreads(P) it around.

All my enemies whisper together(Q) against me;
they imagine the worst for me, saying,
“A vile disease has afflicted him;
he will never get up(R) from the place where he lies.”
Even my close friend,(S)
someone I trusted,
one who shared my bread,
has turned[b] against me.(T)

10 But may you have mercy(U) on me, Lord;
raise me up,(V) that I may repay(W) them.
11 I know that you are pleased with me,(X)
for my enemy does not triumph over me.(Y)
12 Because of my integrity(Z) you uphold me(AA)
and set me in your presence forever.(AB)

13 Praise(AC) be to the Lord, the God of Israel,(AD)
from everlasting to everlasting.
Amen and Amen.(AE)

Proverbs 22:5-6

In the paths of the wicked are snares and pitfalls,(A)
but those who would preserve their life stay far from them.

Start(B) children off on the way they should go,(C)
and even when they are old they will not turn from it.(D)

Job 20-22

Zophar

20 Then Zophar the Naamathite(A) replied:

“My troubled thoughts prompt me to answer
because I am greatly disturbed.(B)
I hear a rebuke(C) that dishonors me,
and my understanding inspires me to reply.

“Surely you know how it has been from of old,(D)
ever since mankind[a] was placed on the earth,
that the mirth of the wicked(E) is brief,
the joy of the godless(F) lasts but a moment.(G)
Though the pride(H) of the godless person reaches to the heavens(I)
and his head touches the clouds,(J)
he will perish forever,(K) like his own dung;
those who have seen him will say, ‘Where is he?’(L)
Like a dream(M) he flies away,(N) no more to be found,
banished(O) like a vision of the night.(P)
The eye that saw him will not see him again;
his place will look on him no more.(Q)
10 His children(R) must make amends to the poor;
his own hands must give back his wealth.(S)
11 The youthful vigor(T) that fills his bones(U)
will lie with him in the dust.(V)

12 “Though evil(W) is sweet in his mouth
and he hides it under his tongue,(X)
13 though he cannot bear to let it go
and lets it linger in his mouth,(Y)
14 yet his food will turn sour in his stomach;(Z)
it will become the venom of serpents(AA) within him.
15 He will spit out the riches(AB) he swallowed;
God will make his stomach vomit(AC) them up.
16 He will suck the poison(AD) of serpents;
the fangs of an adder will kill him.(AE)
17 He will not enjoy the streams,
the rivers(AF) flowing with honey(AG) and cream.(AH)
18 What he toiled for he must give back uneaten;(AI)
he will not enjoy the profit from his trading.(AJ)
19 For he has oppressed the poor(AK) and left them destitute;(AL)
he has seized houses(AM) he did not build.

20 “Surely he will have no respite from his craving;(AN)
he cannot save himself by his treasure.(AO)
21 Nothing is left for him to devour;
his prosperity will not endure.(AP)
22 In the midst of his plenty, distress will overtake him;(AQ)
the full force of misery will come upon him.(AR)
23 When he has filled his belly,(AS)
God will vent his burning anger(AT) against him
and rain down his blows on him.(AU)
24 Though he flees(AV) from an iron weapon,
a bronze-tipped arrow pierces him.(AW)
25 He pulls it out of his back,
the gleaming point out of his liver.
Terrors(AX) will come over him;(AY)
26 total darkness(AZ) lies in wait for his treasures.
A fire(BA) unfanned will consume him(BB)
and devour what is left in his tent.(BC)
27 The heavens will expose his guilt;
the earth will rise up against him.(BD)
28 A flood will carry off his house,(BE)
rushing waters[b] on the day of God’s wrath.(BF)
29 Such is the fate God allots the wicked,
the heritage appointed for them by God.”(BG)

Job

21 Then Job replied:

“Listen carefully to my words;(BH)
let this be the consolation you give me.(BI)
Bear with me while I speak,
and after I have spoken, mock on.(BJ)

“Is my complaint(BK) directed to a human being?
Why should I not be impatient?(BL)
Look at me and be appalled;
clap your hand over your mouth.(BM)
When I think about this, I am terrified;(BN)
trembling seizes my body.(BO)
Why do the wicked live on,
growing old and increasing in power?(BP)
They see their children established around them,
their offspring before their eyes.(BQ)
Their homes are safe and free from fear;(BR)
the rod of God is not on them.(BS)
10 Their bulls never fail to breed;
their cows calve and do not miscarry.(BT)
11 They send forth their children as a flock;(BU)
their little ones dance about.
12 They sing to the music of timbrel and lyre;(BV)
they make merry to the sound of the pipe.(BW)
13 They spend their years in prosperity(BX)
and go down to the grave(BY) in peace.[c](BZ)
14 Yet they say to God, ‘Leave us alone!(CA)
We have no desire to know your ways.(CB)
15 Who is the Almighty, that we should serve him?
What would we gain by praying to him?’(CC)
16 But their prosperity is not in their own hands,
so I stand aloof from the plans of the wicked.(CD)

17 “Yet how often is the lamp of the wicked snuffed out?(CE)
How often does calamity(CF) come upon them,
the fate God allots in his anger?(CG)
18 How often are they like straw before the wind,
like chaff(CH) swept away(CI) by a gale?(CJ)
19 It is said, ‘God stores up the punishment of the wicked for their children.’(CK)
Let him repay the wicked, so that they themselves will experience it!(CL)
20 Let their own eyes see their destruction;(CM)
let them drink(CN) the cup of the wrath of the Almighty.(CO)
21 For what do they care about the families they leave behind(CP)
when their allotted months(CQ) come to an end?(CR)

22 “Can anyone teach knowledge to God,(CS)
since he judges even the highest?(CT)
23 One person dies in full vigor,(CU)
completely secure and at ease,(CV)
24 well nourished(CW) in body,[d]
bones(CX) rich with marrow.(CY)
25 Another dies in bitterness of soul,(CZ)
never having enjoyed anything good.
26 Side by side they lie in the dust,(DA)
and worms(DB) cover them both.(DC)

27 “I know full well what you are thinking,
the schemes by which you would wrong me.
28 You say, ‘Where now is the house of the great,(DD)
the tents where the wicked lived?’(DE)
29 Have you never questioned those who travel?
Have you paid no regard to their accounts—
30 that the wicked are spared from the day of calamity,(DF)
that they are delivered from[e] the day of wrath?(DG)
31 Who denounces their conduct to their face?
Who repays them for what they have done?(DH)
32 They are carried to the grave,
and watch is kept over their tombs.(DI)
33 The soil in the valley is sweet to them;(DJ)
everyone follows after them,
and a countless throng goes[f] before them.(DK)

34 “So how can you console me(DL) with your nonsense?
Nothing is left of your answers but falsehood!”(DM)

Eliphaz

22 Then Eliphaz the Temanite(DN) replied:

“Can a man be of benefit to God?(DO)
Can even a wise person benefit him?(DP)
What pleasure(DQ) would it give the Almighty if you were righteous?(DR)
What would he gain if your ways were blameless?(DS)

“Is it for your piety that he rebukes you
and brings charges against you?(DT)
Is not your wickedness great?
Are not your sins(DU) endless?(DV)
You demanded security(DW) from your relatives for no reason;(DX)
you stripped people of their clothing, leaving them naked.(DY)
You gave no water(DZ) to the weary
and you withheld food from the hungry,(EA)
though you were a powerful man, owning land(EB)
an honored man,(EC) living on it.(ED)
And you sent widows(EE) away empty-handed(EF)
and broke the strength of the fatherless.(EG)
10 That is why snares(EH) are all around you,(EI)
why sudden peril terrifies you,(EJ)
11 why it is so dark(EK) you cannot see,
and why a flood of water covers you.(EL)

12 “Is not God in the heights of heaven?(EM)
And see how lofty are the highest stars!
13 Yet you say, ‘What does God know?(EN)
Does he judge through such darkness?(EO)
14 Thick clouds(EP) veil him, so he does not see us(EQ)
as he goes about in the vaulted heavens.’(ER)
15 Will you keep to the old path
that the wicked(ES) have trod?(ET)
16 They were carried off before their time,(EU)
their foundations(EV) washed away by a flood.(EW)
17 They said to God, ‘Leave us alone!
What can the Almighty do to us?’(EX)
18 Yet it was he who filled their houses with good things,(EY)
so I stand aloof from the plans of the wicked.(EZ)
19 The righteous see their ruin and rejoice;(FA)
the innocent mock(FB) them, saying,
20 ‘Surely our foes are destroyed,(FC)
and fire(FD) devours their wealth.’

21 “Submit to God and be at peace(FE) with him;(FF)
in this way prosperity will come to you.(FG)
22 Accept instruction from his mouth(FH)
and lay up his words(FI) in your heart.(FJ)
23 If you return(FK) to the Almighty, you will be restored:(FL)
If you remove wickedness far from your tent(FM)
24 and assign your nuggets(FN) to the dust,
your gold(FO) of Ophir(FP) to the rocks in the ravines,(FQ)
25 then the Almighty will be your gold,(FR)
the choicest silver for you.(FS)
26 Surely then you will find delight in the Almighty(FT)
and will lift up your face(FU) to God.(FV)
27 You will pray to him,(FW) and he will hear you,(FX)
and you will fulfill your vows.(FY)
28 What you decide on will be done,(FZ)
and light(GA) will shine on your ways.(GB)
29 When people are brought low(GC) and you say, ‘Lift them up!’
then he will save the downcast.(GD)
30 He will deliver even one who is not innocent,(GE)
who will be delivered through the cleanness of your hands.”(GF)

1 Corinthians 1:1-11

Paul, called to be an apostle(A) of Christ Jesus by the will of God,(B) and our brother Sosthenes,(C)

To the church of God(D) in Corinth,(E) to those sanctified in Christ Jesus and called(F) to be his holy people, together with all those everywhere who call on the name(G) of our Lord Jesus Christ—their Lord and ours:

Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.(H)

Thanksgiving

I always thank my God for you(I) because of his grace given you in Christ Jesus. For in him you have been enriched(J) in every way—with all kinds of speech and with all knowledge(K) God thus confirming our testimony(L) about Christ among you. Therefore you do not lack any spiritual gift(M) as you eagerly wait for our Lord Jesus Christ to be revealed.(N) He will also keep you firm to the end, so that you will be blameless(O) on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.(P) God is faithful,(Q) who has called you(R) into fellowship with his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.(S)

A Church Divided Over Leaders

10 I appeal to you, brothers and sisters,[a](T) in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another in what you say and that there be no divisions among you,(U) but that you be perfectly united(V) in mind and thought. 11 My brothers and sisters, some from Chloe’s household(W) have informed me that there are quarrels among you.

Footnotes:

  1. 1 Corinthians 1:10 The Greek word for brothers and sisters (adelphoi) refers here to believers, both men and women, as part of God’s family; also in verses 11 and 26; and in 2:1; 3:1; 4:6; 6:8; 7:24, 29; 10:1; 11:33; 12:1; 14:6, 20, 26, 39; 15:1, 6, 50, 58; 16:15, 20.

Psalm 40:11-17

11 Do not withhold your mercy(A) from me, Lord;
may your love(B) and faithfulness(C) always protect(D) me.
12 For troubles(E) without number surround me;
my sins have overtaken me, and I cannot see.(F)
They are more than the hairs of my head,(G)
and my heart fails(H) within me.
13 Be pleased to save me, Lord;
come quickly, Lord, to help me.(I)

14 May all who want to take my life(J)
be put to shame and confusion;(K)
may all who desire my ruin(L)
be turned back in disgrace.
15 May those who say to me, “Aha! Aha!”(M)
be appalled at their own shame.
16 But may all who seek you(N)
rejoice and be glad(O) in you;
may those who long for your saving help always say,
“The Lord is great!”(P)

17 But as for me, I am poor and needy;(Q)
may the Lord think(R) of me.
You are my help(S) and my deliverer;(T)
you are my God, do not delay.(U)

Rich and poor have this in common:
The Lord is the Maker of them all.(A)

its wages are riches and honor(D) and life.(E)

Job 16:1-19:29, 1 Corinthians 16:1-24, Psalms 40:1-10, Proverbs 22:1

Today is the 25th day of August. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I am Brian. It is great to be here with you as we reach out collectively and spin the knob or turn the knob and walk under the beautiful, sparkly, shiny gate into this new sparkly shiny week. It is great to be here with you to take the next steps forward. And I mentioned to you that we were completing week 33. So, if my math is right and I think it’s right, this is…we’re entering the 34th week of the year. So. We’re working our way through the book of Job. We will continue to do that. It’s just a new week. And, so, this week we will read from the New International version. And, so, we will pick up in Job where we left off yesterday. Today we’ll read Job chapters 16 through 19.

Prayer:

Father, we thank You for Your word and we thank You for escorting us and through Your word day by day step-by-step to this point in the year end as we move into this new week. When it’s all out there in front of us, we haven't…we haven’t made any mistakes yet, we haven’t done anything right yet. All is out there for us to decide and we invite Your Holy Spirit into every thought, every word, every deed of our lives as we take the next steps forward into our lives through the next few days. Come Holy Spirit we pray in the mighty name of Jesus. Amen.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Good morning Daily Audio Bible, this is Jarrod the Encourager calling to remind myself of the goodness of God and the things we have to be thankful for and to encourage my heart as I hope to encourage you as well. You know, sometimes we wake up and the birds are loud, sometimes waking us sooner than we wanted too, but I’ve been using it lately to remember the verses in Matthew six that wakes me with the thought that God is providing for all of our needs, that He provides for those birds out the door and that He’s gonna provide for me that day and if He loves those birds then I’m gonna love those birds and be thankful for those birds. The grass of the field remember that we are much more valuable than they. His love never ends, His mercy is new every morning. So, let that be hope and encouragement to you as you face the trials of life. And I appreciate your prayers as I continue to run after God, to seek him. in everything in the season of separation with my wife, that I would look to Him, that I would see the best, that I would be able to walk in the knowledge of who I am and not in the way the circumstances look but that I would have hope because of the light of life that is shining into my window every morning and that’s shining there available to you as well. I hope to see you at the Family Reunion. I’m gonna be there. I’m looking forward to meeting you and I hope your day goes well. Bye.

Hi DAB family this Chandra from Maryland. I just want to leave a message. Today is August 21st. Of course, I’m still catching up with the broadcast, but I am listening to the broadcast from the 13th where Brian was talking about Nehemiah and the wall. And one thing that he pointed out as a sense of encouragement was that Nehemiah, no matter all the opposition that he was going through and dealing with, he was still trying to press and still trying to build the wall. And I guess that’s just my way of saying it. I wanted to say that really encouraged me because the Lord showed me some things from years ago and, of course, when I first started I was like, “yay, I’m gonna do this” and I tried to get a jumpstart on it but what I really didn’t know was that this dream was bigger than me and it’s a God-given dream and I know that…I know now that the Lord is taking me through step-by-step and I can’t sit there and try to go faster than, you know, what my ability is. I have to learn and grow and stuff like that. But I just wanted to say that I love you guys and, you know, of course since I’m listening to the podcast, I am praying for everybody whose prayers I hear. I can’t call anybody out specifically, but thank you Brian and Jill for this platform that you all set up as well as everyone who consistently leaves words of encouragement and prayers and those people who are working in the background to assist in making this happen. Love you guys. Bye.

Hi Daily Audio Bible my name is Lisa and I live in Lititz Pennsylvania. I am finally calling to please ask you to pray for our daughter Breanna. Most people just call her Bree. When she was six years old, she was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis, which we’ve been hearing about seems like a lot from the DAB prayer line lately and also celiac disease. She will be turning 20 years old this Sunday on August 25th and a huge praise is that she’s never once had to be hospitalized for the cystic fibrosis. I am calling to ask you to pray for her and her heart and her mind. She accepted the Lord when she was younger but like so many that I’ve been hearing about, she turned away from the Lord. So, please pray that her eyes will be open to what’s true and that the Lord would give us wisdom and that we will be yielded to the Holy Spirit’s guidance on what to say and when to say it and when to keep our mouth shut and let other people speak truth into her life. But if you could just pray for her, her name again is Breanna, or Bree people call her Bree, and thank you so much praying.

My beloved friends this is Angel from California. The reason why I haven’t been calling is because I went on vacation for nine days with my son. We went all the way to Seattle Washington and Portland Oregon and all of those places, and we had so much fun. And praise the living Lord for letting us get there safe and come back. I just wanted to let you know that this August the 10th was my first year that the Lord graciously…just blessed me and I’m alive. And I wish to tell you guys my testimony for the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. And that is, I had a surgery and my surgery August the 10th, 2018 went amazingly well. My surgery was for two aneurysms embedded in my brain that were supposed to take 2 to 3 hours. The doctor performed the surgery. It was the best from LA…UCLA. When the doctors were performing the surgery, they found six aneurysms and God blessed me with His favor. My doctor who is a very good doctor assisted and they went in and they found six aneurysms, so they placed six stents and the surgery lasted six hours. I have the Daily Audio Bible family praying for me and my surgery was a success. I was sent home on August 11th, 2018 and God is still on the throne and prayer changes things. Psalm 91 is a prayer…

Job 16-19

Job

16 Then Job replied:

“I have heard many things like these;
you are miserable comforters,(A) all of you!(B)
Will your long-winded speeches never end?(C)
What ails you that you keep on arguing?(D)
I also could speak like you,
if you were in my place;
I could make fine speeches against you
and shake my head(E) at you.
But my mouth would encourage you;
comfort(F) from my lips would bring you relief.(G)

“Yet if I speak, my pain is not relieved;
and if I refrain, it does not go away.(H)
Surely, God, you have worn me out;(I)
you have devastated my entire household.(J)
You have shriveled me up—and it has become a witness;
my gauntness(K) rises up and testifies against me.(L)
God assails me and tears(M) me in his anger(N)
and gnashes his teeth at me;(O)
my opponent fastens on me his piercing eyes.(P)
10 People open their mouths(Q) to jeer at me;(R)
they strike my cheek(S) in scorn
and unite together against me.(T)
11 God has turned me over to the ungodly
and thrown me into the clutches of the wicked.(U)
12 All was well with me, but he shattered me;
he seized me by the neck and crushed me.(V)
He has made me his target;(W)
13 his archers surround me.(X)
Without pity, he pierces(Y) my kidneys
and spills my gall on the ground.
14 Again and again(Z) he bursts upon me;
he rushes at me like a warrior.(AA)

15 “I have sewed sackcloth(AB) over my skin
and buried my brow in the dust.(AC)
16 My face is red with weeping,(AD)
dark shadows ring my eyes;(AE)
17 yet my hands have been free of violence(AF)
and my prayer is pure.(AG)

18 “Earth, do not cover my blood;(AH)
may my cry(AI) never be laid to rest!(AJ)
19 Even now my witness(AK) is in heaven;(AL)
my advocate is on high.(AM)
20 My intercessor(AN) is my friend[a](AO)
as my eyes pour out(AP) tears(AQ) to God;
21 on behalf of a man he pleads(AR) with God
as one pleads for a friend.

22 “Only a few years will pass
before I take the path of no return.(AS)

17 My spirit(AT) is broken,
my days are cut short,(AU)
the grave awaits me.(AV)
Surely mockers(AW) surround me;(AX)
my eyes must dwell on their hostility.

“Give me, O God, the pledge you demand.(AY)
Who else will put up security(AZ) for me?(BA)
You have closed their minds to understanding;(BB)
therefore you will not let them triumph.
If anyone denounces their friends for reward,(BC)
the eyes of their children will fail.(BD)

“God has made me a byword(BE) to everyone,(BF)
a man in whose face people spit.(BG)
My eyes have grown dim with grief;(BH)
my whole frame is but a shadow.(BI)
The upright are appalled at this;
the innocent are aroused(BJ) against the ungodly.
Nevertheless, the righteous(BK) will hold to their ways,
and those with clean hands(BL) will grow stronger.(BM)

10 “But come on, all of you, try again!
I will not find a wise man among you.(BN)
11 My days have passed,(BO) my plans are shattered.
Yet the desires of my heart(BP)
12 turn night into day;(BQ)
in the face of the darkness light is near.(BR)
13 If the only home I hope for is the grave,(BS)
if I spread out my bed(BT) in the realm of darkness,(BU)
14 if I say to corruption,(BV) ‘You are my father,’
and to the worm,(BW) ‘My mother’ or ‘My sister,’
15 where then is my hope—(BX)
who can see any hope for me?(BY)
16 Will it go down to the gates of death?(BZ)
Will we descend together into the dust?”(CA)

Bildad

18 Then Bildad the Shuhite(CB) replied:

“When will you end these speeches?(CC)
Be sensible, and then we can talk.
Why are we regarded as cattle(CD)
and considered stupid in your sight?(CE)
You who tear yourself(CF) to pieces in your anger,(CG)
is the earth to be abandoned for your sake?
Or must the rocks be moved from their place?(CH)

“The lamp of a wicked man is snuffed out;(CI)
the flame of his fire stops burning.(CJ)
The light in his tent(CK) becomes dark;(CL)
the lamp beside him goes out.(CM)
The vigor(CN) of his step is weakened;(CO)
his own schemes(CP) throw him down.(CQ)
His feet thrust him into a net;(CR)
he wanders into its mesh.
A trap seizes him by the heel;
a snare(CS) holds him fast.(CT)
10 A noose(CU) is hidden for him on the ground;
a trap(CV) lies in his path.(CW)
11 Terrors(CX) startle him on every side(CY)
and dog(CZ) his every step.
12 Calamity(DA) is hungry(DB) for him;
disaster(DC) is ready for him when he falls.(DD)
13 It eats away parts of his skin;(DE)
death’s firstborn devours his limbs.(DF)
14 He is torn from the security of his tent(DG)
and marched off to the king(DH) of terrors.(DI)
15 Fire resides[b] in his tent;(DJ)
burning sulfur(DK) is scattered over his dwelling.
16 His roots dry up below(DL)
and his branches wither above.(DM)
17 The memory of him perishes from the earth;(DN)
he has no name(DO) in the land.(DP)
18 He is driven from light into the realm of darkness(DQ)
and is banished(DR) from the world.(DS)
19 He has no offspring(DT) or descendants(DU) among his people,
no survivor(DV) where once he lived.(DW)
20 People of the west are appalled(DX) at his fate;(DY)
those of the east are seized with horror.
21 Surely such is the dwelling(DZ) of an evil man;(EA)
such is the place(EB) of one who does not know God.”(EC)

Job

19 Then Job replied:

“How long will you torment(ED) me
and crush(EE) me with words?
Ten times(EF) now you have reproached(EG) me;
shamelessly you attack me.
If it is true that I have gone astray,
my error(EH) remains my concern alone.
If indeed you would exalt yourselves above me(EI)
and use my humiliation against me,
then know that God has wronged me(EJ)
and drawn his net(EK) around me.(EL)

“Though I cry, ‘Violence!’ I get no response;(EM)
though I call for help,(EN) there is no justice.(EO)
He has blocked my way so I cannot pass;(EP)
he has shrouded my paths in darkness.(EQ)
He has stripped(ER) me of my honor(ES)
and removed the crown from my head.(ET)
10 He tears me down(EU) on every side till I am gone;
he uproots my hope(EV) like a tree.(EW)
11 His anger(EX) burns against me;
he counts me among his enemies.(EY)
12 His troops advance in force;(EZ)
they build a siege ramp(FA) against me
and encamp around my tent.(FB)

13 “He has alienated my family(FC) from me;
my acquaintances are completely estranged from me.(FD)
14 My relatives have gone away;
my closest friends(FE) have forgotten me.
15 My guests(FF) and my female servants(FG) count me a foreigner;
they look on me as on a stranger.
16 I summon my servant, but he does not answer,
though I beg him with my own mouth.
17 My breath is offensive to my wife;
I am loathsome(FH) to my own family.
18 Even the little boys(FI) scorn me;
when I appear, they ridicule me.(FJ)
19 All my intimate friends(FK) detest me;(FL)
those I love have turned against me.(FM)
20 I am nothing but skin and bones;(FN)
I have escaped only by the skin of my teeth.[c]

21 “Have pity on me, my friends,(FO) have pity,
for the hand of God has struck(FP) me.
22 Why do you pursue(FQ) me as God does?(FR)
Will you never get enough of my flesh?(FS)

23 “Oh, that my words were recorded,
that they were written on a scroll,(FT)
24 that they were inscribed with an iron tool(FU) on[d] lead,
or engraved in rock forever!(FV)
25 I know that my redeemer[e](FW) lives,(FX)
and that in the end he will stand on the earth.[f]
26 And after my skin has been destroyed,
yet[g] in[h] my flesh I will see God;(FY)
27 I myself will see him
with my own eyes(FZ)—I, and not another.
How my heart yearns(GA) within me!

28 “If you say, ‘How we will hound(GB) him,
since the root of the trouble lies in him,[i]
29 you should fear the sword yourselves;
for wrath will bring punishment by the sword,(GC)
and then you will know that there is judgment.[j](GD)

1 Corinthians 16

The Collection for the Lord’s People

16 Now about the collection(A) for the Lord’s people:(B) Do what I told the Galatian(C) churches to do. On the first day of every week,(D) each one of you should set aside a sum of money in keeping with your income, saving it up, so that when I come no collections will have to be made.(E) Then, when I arrive, I will give letters of introduction to the men you approve(F) and send them with your gift to Jerusalem. If it seems advisable for me to go also, they will accompany me.

Personal Requests

After I go through Macedonia, I will come to you(G)—for I will be going through Macedonia.(H) Perhaps I will stay with you for a while, or even spend the winter, so that you can help me on my journey,(I) wherever I go. For I do not want to see you now and make only a passing visit; I hope to spend some time with you, if the Lord permits.(J) But I will stay on at Ephesus(K) until Pentecost,(L) because a great door for effective work has opened to me,(M) and there are many who oppose me.

10 When Timothy(N) comes, see to it that he has nothing to fear while he is with you, for he is carrying on the work of the Lord,(O) just as I am. 11 No one, then, should treat him with contempt.(P) Send him on his way(Q) in peace(R) so that he may return to me. I am expecting him along with the brothers.

12 Now about our brother Apollos:(S) I strongly urged him to go to you with the brothers. He was quite unwilling to go now, but he will go when he has the opportunity.

13 Be on your guard; stand firm(T) in the faith; be courageous; be strong.(U) 14 Do everything in love.(V)

15 You know that the household of Stephanas(W) were the first converts(X) in Achaia,(Y) and they have devoted themselves to the service(Z) of the Lord’s people.(AA) I urge you, brothers and sisters, 16 to submit(AB) to such people and to everyone who joins in the work and labors at it. 17 I was glad when Stephanas, Fortunatus and Achaicus arrived, because they have supplied what was lacking from you.(AC) 18 For they refreshed(AD) my spirit and yours also. Such men deserve recognition.(AE)

Final Greetings

19 The churches in the province of Asia(AF) send you greetings. Aquila and Priscilla[a](AG) greet you warmly in the Lord, and so does the church that meets at their house.(AH) 20 All the brothers and sisters here send you greetings. Greet one another with a holy kiss.(AI)

21 I, Paul, write this greeting in my own hand.(AJ)

22 If anyone does not love the Lord,(AK) let that person be cursed!(AL) Come, Lord[b]!(AM)

23 The grace of the Lord Jesus be with you.(AN)

24 My love to all of you in Christ Jesus. Amen.[c]

Psalm 40:1-10

Psalm 40[a](A)

For the director of music. Of David. A psalm.

I waited patiently(B) for the Lord;
he turned to me and heard my cry.(C)
He lifted me out of the slimy pit,(D)
out of the mud(E) and mire;(F)
he set my feet(G) on a rock(H)
and gave me a firm place to stand.
He put a new song(I) in my mouth,
a hymn of praise to our God.
Many will see and fear the Lord(J)
and put their trust(K) in him.

Blessed is the one(L)
who trusts in the Lord,(M)
who does not look to the proud,(N)
to those who turn aside to false gods.[b](O)
Many, Lord my God,
are the wonders(P) you have done,
the things you planned for us.
None can compare(Q) with you;
were I to speak and tell of your deeds,
they would be too many(R) to declare.

Sacrifice and offering you did not desire—(S)
but my ears you have opened[c](T)
burnt offerings(U) and sin offerings[d] you did not require.
Then I said, “Here I am, I have come—
it is written about me in the scroll.[e](V)
I desire to do your will,(W) my God;(X)
your law is within my heart.”(Y)

I proclaim your saving acts(Z) in the great assembly;(AA)
I do not seal my lips, Lord,
as you know.(AB)
10 I do not hide your righteousness in my heart;
I speak of your faithfulness(AC) and your saving help.
I do not conceal your love and your faithfulness
from the great assembly.(AD)

Job 12:1-15:35, 1 Corinthians 15:29-58, Psalms 39:1-13, Proverbs 21:30-31

Today’s the 24th day of August. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I’m Brian and it’s great to be here with you as we…as we close the books on another one of our weeks together. And if I’m counting right, we are concluding our 33rd week of the year. So, obviously there are fewer weeks left in the year than we’ve already gone through, but there’s a lot left in our adventure as we continue forward through the Scriptures. So, we’ve been reading from the Christian Standard Bible this week, which is what we’ll do today, and we have been working our way into and through the book of Job, which is what we’ll do today as we continue listening to the dialogue that’s happening between Job and his friends. And today we’ll read Job chapters 12 through 15.

Prayer:

Thank You, Father for Your word. Thank You for another week, this 33 weeks we have journeyed together, seven days a week working our way through Your word and we are thankful for all that You’ve spoken. You’ve touched nearly everything about us in one way or another and You keep doing that, You keep coming for us, You keep being patient and frankly, we keep being dense. Sometimes You keep saying things over and over and over but we still struggle to live into those things. And, so, come Holy Spirit and let us get to the bed rock as Job did in today’s reading where he was able to say, “even if he kills me, I will still hope in Him.” Job had certainly learned that there is no other hope and yet we put our hope in all kinds of things that can’t deliver. And, so, we thank You for bringing us these 33 weeks into this year and we double down. Our hope is in You and You alone as we move forward. Come Holy Spirit we pray. In the mighty name of Jesus, we ask. Amen.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Hi, this is Jenna calling from the UK and I just listened to the podcast for the 17th of August, which was yesterday and at the end of it a lady by the name of Alisha called saying that she’s an alcoholic and she needs our prayers. And Alisha I lift you up in the name of Jesus and I know that He will make you strong. I ask Him to let you feel His love to fill the void in your life that has been taken up by alcohol and I just want to help pray for Alisha. I just want to leave something with you Alisha that, you know, our pastor said in church. He said, __ , what a friend we have in Jesus, all our sins and grief to bear. What a privilege to carry everything to God in prayer. Oh, what needs __ Father. Oh, what needless pain we bear all because we do not carry everything…everything to God in prayer. Alisha, I pray that you will bring everything to God in prayer and you leave it at His feet and the power of God will overcome…will overcome everything and that void, that alcoholic state can…will be filled with the love and power of God. God bless you. And God bless all our DAB family.

Hi this is Lisa I called in last week. I called in pretty frantically. Didn’t say really who I was or how long I’ve been with DAB. I’ve been listening since the first of this year and it is definitely changing my life and my walk with God. It is awesome to hear the word of God, it is awesome to listen to Brian explain the Scriptures. Anyway, I called in last week about my son. I didn’t even say his name. His name is Adam. I called in last week about him being hospitalized due to making statements of wanting to kill himself. Like I had said before, he battled depression in the past as a teenager. He did attempt suicide. He was hospitalized for that. I just want to thank anybody and everybody that has been praying for him. God is moving, but God is moving not only in, I believe in the situation with my son, but He’s moving in me, He’s delivering me, his wife is being delivered. His wife has rededicated her life to God and she is excited to start a new life with God and she has been connected with a group of Spirit filled women that have that is…that is guiding her and mentoring her. They live 2 ½ hours from where I live. We live here in Missouri. So, it…

This is Rosie in Oklahoma. I got on DAB Friends on August 9th this year to request prayer for my daughter who just got out of the hospital and I couldn’t find her. I contacted the police to file a missing-persons report and also got on DAB Friends and requested prayer. They found her the next morning and they had to rush her to the hospital because she was having problems breathing. First of all, I want to thank God for making sure that the police found her. She was in ICU for a few days. They moved her to a regular room, but she was still having problems breathing. Today they did a scope of her throat to see what was going on and found a mass. She is now back in ICU well they decide what to do about the mass. Please pray for total hearing for my daughter Jamie. It was difficult to me and her daughter to see her in this condition that we saw her in. Thank you. Love you guys. Bye.

Hi family, this is his little Cherry in Canada and Brian’s been reading from first Corinthians and how unique we are in the body and how we shouldn’t compare ourselves to each other. And this is one of my favorite subjects. And I just needed to call in and rant about it a little bit. I think I feel so strongly about this because I’ve been very insecure my whole life, but the thing about encountering the love of the Father is that He looks at you in a way that is so specific because no one else is you. Every…every one of us, every believer carries the DNA of love of Jesus Himself and that’s what we have in common, but He Himself is so big and beautiful that it would take a gazillion reflections of His image to paint His personality. And, so, each one of us is created one-of-a-kind and that’s why a million other Christians and tell Him He’s beautiful but His eyes keep turning in your direction and His for your feelings. That’s why your worship moves Him in a way nothing else can. It’s not just that you are unique, it’s that your relationship with Him is complete usually unique. You see a side of Him no one else will because you bring out the best in Him. Your shape, style, flavor of his best. And that’s why I need you so much. I need to see the way He loves you because that gives me a glimpse of Him I’ll never see otherwise. So, it’s not just your unique gift that makes you indispensable it’s the unique way He loves you, the unique way you light up His face when He looks at you and I want to see that. So, please stay connected to the body, stay authentic and love Jesus as only you can. I think that’s what I’m trying to say. Thanks family. Bye for now.

The Daily Audio Bible Reading for Saturday August 24, 2019 (NIV)

Job 12-15

Job’s Reply to Zophar

12 Then Job answered:

No doubt you are the people,
and wisdom will die with you!
But I also have a mind like you;
I am not inferior to you.
Who doesn’t know the things you are talking about?[a](A)

I am a laughingstock to my[b] friends,
by calling on God, who answers me.[c]
The righteous and upright man is a laughingstock.(B)
The one who is at ease(C) holds calamity in contempt
and thinks it is prepared for those whose feet are slipping.
The tents of robbers are safe,(D)
and those who trouble God are secure;
God holds them in his hands.[d](E)

But ask the animals, and they will instruct you;
ask the birds of the sky, and they will tell you.(F)
Or speak to the earth, and it will instruct you;
let the fish of the sea inform you.
Which of all these does not know
that the hand of the Lord has done this?(G)
10 The life of every living thing is in his hand,
as well as the breath of all mankind.(H)
11 Doesn’t the ear test words
as the palate tastes food?
12 Wisdom is found with the elderly,
and understanding comes with long life.(I)

13 Wisdom and strength belong to God;
counsel and understanding are his.(J)
14 Whatever he tears down cannot be rebuilt;
whoever he imprisons cannot be released.(K)
15 When he withholds water, everything dries up,
and when he releases it, it destroys the land.(L)
16 True wisdom and power belong to him.
The deceived and the deceiver are his.
17 He leads counselors away barefoot
and makes judges go mad.(M)
18 He releases the bonds[e] put on by kings(N)
and fastens a belt around their waists.
19 He leads priests away barefoot
and overthrows established leaders.(O)
20 He deprives trusted advisers of speech
and takes away the elders’ good judgment.
21 He pours out contempt on nobles
and disarms[f] the strong.
22 He reveals mysteries from the darkness
and brings the deepest darkness into the light.(P)
23 He makes nations great, then destroys them;
he enlarges nations,(Q) then leads them away.
24 He deprives the world’s leaders of reason,
and makes them wander in a trackless wasteland.(R)
25 They grope around in darkness without light;
he makes them stagger like a drunkard.(S)

13 Look, my eyes have seen all this;
my ears(T) have heard and understood it.
Everything you know, I also know;
I am not inferior to you.(U)
Yet I prefer to speak to the Almighty
and argue my case before God.(V)
You use lies like plaster;
you are all worthless healers.(W)
If only you would shut up
and let that be your wisdom!

Hear now my argument,
and listen to my defense.[g]
Would you testify unjustly on God’s behalf
or speak deceitfully for him?
Would you show partiality(X) to him
or argue the case in his defense?
Would it go well if he examined you?
Could you deceive him as you would deceive a man?(Y)
10 Surely he would rebuke you
if you secretly showed partiality.
11 Would God’s majesty not terrify you?(Z)
Would his dread not fall on you?
12 Your memorable sayings are proverbs of ash;(AA)
your defenses are made of clay.

13 Be quiet,[h] and I will speak.
Let whatever comes happen to me.
14 I will put[i] myself at risk[j]
and take my life in my own hands.
15 Even if he kills me, I will hope in him.[k]
I will still defend(AB) my ways before him.
16 Yes, this will result in my deliverance,
for no godless person(AC) can appear before him.
17 Pay close attention to my words;
let my declaration ring in your ears.
18 Now then, I have prepared my case;(AD)
I know that I am right.
19 Can anyone indict me?
If so, I will be silent and die.

20 Only grant these two things to me, God,
so that I will not have to hide from your presence:
21 remove your hand from me,
and do not let your terror frighten me.(AE)
22 Then call, and I will answer,(AF)
or I will speak, and you can respond to me.
23 How many iniquities(AG) and sins have I committed?[l]
Reveal to me my transgression and sin.
24 Why do you hide your face
and consider me your enemy?(AH)
25 Will you frighten a wind-driven leaf?
Will you chase after dry straw?
26 For you record bitter accusations against me
and make me inherit the iniquities of my youth.
27 You put my feet in the stocks
and stand watch over all my paths,
setting a limit for the soles[m] of my feet.

28 A person wears out like something rotten,
like a moth-eaten garment.(AI)

14 Anyone born of woman
is short of days and full of trouble.(AJ)
He blossoms like a flower, then withers;(AK)
he flees like a shadow and does not last.
Do you really take notice of one like this?
Will you bring me into judgment against you?[n](AL)
Who can produce something pure from what is impure?
No one!
Since a person’s days are determined
and the number of his months depends on you,
and since you have set[o] limits he cannot pass,(AM)
look away from him and let him rest
so that he can enjoy his day like a hired worker.(AN)

There is hope for a tree:
If it is cut down, it will sprout again,
and its shoots will not die.
If its roots grow old in the ground
and its stump starts to die in the soil,
the scent of water makes it thrive
and produce twigs like a sapling.(AO)
10 But a person dies and fades away;
he breathes his last—where is he?
11 As water disappears from a lake
and a river becomes parched and dry,
12 so people lie down never to rise again.
They will not wake up until the heavens are no more;(AP)
they will not stir from their sleep.

13 If only you would hide me in Sheol(AQ)
and conceal me until your anger(AR) passes.
If only you would appoint a time for me
and then remember me.
14 When a person dies, will he come back to life?
If so, I would wait(AS) all the days of my struggle(AT)
until my relief comes.
15 You would call, and I would answer you.
You would long for the work of your hands.(AU)
16 For then you would count my steps(AV)
but would not take note(AW) of my sin.
17 My rebellion would be sealed up in a bag,
and you would cover over my iniquity.

18 But as a mountain collapses and crumbles
and a rock is dislodged from its place,
19 as water wears away stones
and torrents wash away the soil from the land,
so you destroy a man’s hope.(AX)
20 You completely overpower him, and he passes on;
you change his appearance and send him away.
21 If his sons receive honor, he does not know it;
if they become insignificant, he is unaware of it.(AY)
22 He feels only the pain of his own body
and mourns only for himself.

Second Series of Speeches

Eliphaz Speaks

15 Then Eliphaz the Temanite replied:

Does a wise man answer with empty[p] counsel(AZ)
or fill himself[q] with the hot east wind?
Should he argue(BA) with useless talk
or with words that serve no good purpose?
But you even undermine the fear of God
and hinder meditation before him.
Your iniquity(BB) teaches you what to say,
and you choose the language of the crafty.
Your own mouth condemns you, not I;
your own lips testify against you.(BC)

Were you the first human ever born,
or were you brought forth before the hills?(BD)
Do you listen in on the council of God,
or have a monopoly on wisdom?(BE)
What do you know that we don’t?
What do you understand that is not clear to us?
10 Both the gray-haired and the elderly are with us—
older than your father.
11 Are God’s consolations not enough for you,
even the words that deal gently with you?
12 Why has your heart misled you,
and why do your eyes flash
13 as you turn your anger[r] against God
and allow such words to leave your mouth?

14 What is a mere human, that he should be pure,(BF)
or one born of a woman, that he should be righteous?
15 If God puts no trust in his holy ones(BG)
and the heavens are not pure in his sight,(BH)
16 how much less one who is revolting and corrupt,(BI)
who drinks injustice(BJ) like water?

17 Listen to me and I will inform you.
I will describe what I have seen,
18 what the wise have declared and not concealed,
that came from their ancestors,(BK)
19 to whom alone the land was given
when no foreigner passed among them.
20 A wicked person writhes in pain all his days,
throughout the number of years reserved for the ruthless.
21 Dreadful sounds fill his ears;
when he is at peace, a robber attacks him.
22 He doesn’t believe he will return from darkness;
he is destined for the sword.(BL)
23 He wanders about for food, asking, “Where is it?”
He knows the day of darkness is at hand.
24 Trouble(BM) and distress terrify him,
overwhelming him like a king prepared for battle.
25 For he has stretched out his hand(BN) against God
and has arrogantly opposed the Almighty.
26 He rushes headlong at him
with his thick, studded shields.
27 Though his face is covered with fat[s]
and his waistline bulges with it,
28 he will dwell in ruined cities,
in abandoned houses destined to become piles of rubble.(BO)
29 He will no longer be rich; his wealth will not endure.
His possessions[t] will not increase in the land.
30 He will not escape from the darkness;
flames will wither his shoots,
and by the breath of God’s mouth, he will depart.(BP)
31 Let him not put trust in worthless things, being led astray,
for what he gets in exchange will prove worthless.
32 It will be accomplished before his time,
and his branch will not flourish.
33 He will be like a vine that drops its unripe grapes(BQ)
and like an olive tree that sheds its blossoms.
34 For the company of the godless(BR) will have no children,
and fire will consume the tents of those who offer bribes.
35 They conceive trouble(BS) and give birth to evil;
their womb(BT) prepares deception.(BU)

1 Corinthians 15:29-58

Resurrection Supported by Christian Experience

29 Otherwise what will they do who are being baptized for the dead?[a] If the dead are not raised at all, then why are people baptized for them?[b] 30 Why are we in danger every hour? 31 I face death every day,(A) as surely as I may boast about you, brothers and sisters, in Christ Jesus our Lord. 32 If I fought wild beasts in Ephesus(B) as a mere man, what good did that do me?(C) If the dead are not raised, Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die.[c](D) 33 Do not be deceived: “Bad company corrupts good morals.” 34 Come to your senses[d](E) and stop sinning; for some people are ignorant about God. I say this to your shame.(F)

The Nature of the Resurrection Body

35 But someone will ask, “How are the dead raised? What kind of body will they have when they come?” 36 You fool! What you sow does not come to life(G) unless it dies. 37 And as for what you sow—you are not sowing the body that will be, but only a seed, perhaps of wheat or another grain. 38 But God gives it a body as he wants,(H) and to each of the seeds its own body. 39 Not all flesh(I) is the same flesh; there is one flesh for humans, another for animals, another for birds, and another for fish. 40 There are heavenly bodies and earthly bodies, but the splendor(J) of the heavenly bodies is different from that of the earthly ones. 41 There is a splendor of the sun, another of the moon, and another of the stars; in fact, one star differs from another star in splendor. 42 So it is with the resurrection of the dead: Sown in corruption, raised in incorruption;(K) 43 sown in dishonor,(L) raised in glory;(M) sown in weakness, raised in power;(N) 44 sown a natural body, raised a spiritual body. If there is a natural body, there is also a spiritual body. 45 So it is written, The first man Adam became a living being;[e](O) the last Adam(P) became a life-giving spirit. 46 However, the spiritual is not first, but the natural, then the spiritual.

47 The first man was from the earth, a man of dust;(Q) the second man is[f] from heaven. 48 Like the man of dust, so are those who are of the dust; like the man of heaven, so are those who are of heaven.(R) 49 And just as we have borne the image(S) of the man of dust, we will also bear the image of the man of heaven.(T)

Victorious Resurrection

50 What I am saying, brothers and sisters, is this: Flesh(U) and blood(V) cannot inherit the kingdom of God, nor can corruption inherit incorruption. 51 Listen, I am telling you a mystery: We will not all fall asleep, but we will all be changed, 52 in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet.(W) For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we will be changed. 53 For this corruptible body must be clothed(X) with incorruptibility,(Y) and this mortal body must be clothed with immortality. 54 When this corruptible body is clothed with incorruptibility, and this mortal body is clothed with immortality, then the saying that is written will take place:

Death has been swallowed up(Z) in victory.[g](AA)
55 Where, death, is your victory?
Where, death, is your sting?[h](AB)

56 The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin(AC) is the law.(AD) 57 But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory(AE) through our Lord Jesus Christ!

58 Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, be steadfast, immovable, always excelling in the Lord’s work,(AF) because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.

Psalm 39

Psalm 39

The Fleeting Nature of Life

For the choir director, for Jeduthun. A psalm of David.

I said, “I will guard my ways
so that I may not sin with my tongue;
I will guard my mouth with a muzzle
as long as the wicked are in my presence.”(A)
I was speechless and quiet;
I kept silent, even from speaking good,
and my pain intensified.(B)
My heart grew hot within me;
as I mused, a fire burned.(C)
I spoke with my tongue:
Lord, make me aware of my end
and the number of my days
so that I will know how short-lived I am.(D)
In fact, you have made my days just inches long,
and my life span is as nothing to you.
Yes, every human being stands as only a vapor.(E)Selah
Yes, a person goes about like a mere shadow.
Indeed, they rush around in vain,
gathering possessions
without knowing who will get them.(F)

“Now, Lord, what do I wait for?
My hope is in you.(G)
Rescue me from all my transgressions;
do not make me the taunt of fools.(H)
I am speechless; I do not open my mouth
because of what you have done.(I)
10 Remove your torment from me.
Because of the force of your hand I am finished.(J)
11 You discipline a person with punishment for iniquity,
consuming like a moth what is precious to him;(K)
yes, every human being is only a vapor.(L)Selah

12 “Hear my prayer, Lord,
and listen to my cry for help;
do not be silent at my tears.(M)
For I am here with you as an alien,
a temporary resident like all my ancestors.(N)
13 Turn your angry gaze from me
so that I may be cheered up
before I die and am gone.”(O)

Job 8:1-11:20, 1 Corinthians 15:1-28, Psalms 38:1-22, Proverbs 21:28-29

Today is the 23rd day of August. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I am Brian and it is a joy to be here with you today. It’s a joy to be here with you every day as we come around the global campfire and do what we do, take another step forward in God’s word and let God’s word to orient us to his heart and advise and inform our choices today. I can’t imagine life without this as the rhythm and the center. So, I’m glad we can be here together and take that next step. And, of course, we’re in the book of Job now and we have spent a couple of days in the book of Job, and so we kind of know the lay of the land. And we heard one of Job’s friends, Eliphaz speak yesterday and Job responded to that and today we’re gonna hear from Bildad. So, we’re reading from the Christian Standard Bible this week. Job chapter 8,9, 10, and 11 today.

Commentary:

Okay. So, the apostle Paul was a Pharisee as we probably we all at least mostly know. And a Pharisee was very, very strict and very educated way to lead the people. And so, as we’re reading in first Corinthians today, even though Paul has kind of left that and has become this apostle of Jesus and is preaching the gospel of Jesus, he’s still being quite the Pharisee today because this is how he was trained. So, he’s very passionate. So, during the time that Jesus lived and then also during the time that Paul lived there were two different schools of thought in Judaism. On the one hand you have the Sadducees and they were the ones that were in power really, they were the elite among the Jews. They thought that they were actually the true ancestors among the priests. And, so, they were mostly centered in Jerusalem and very powerful, very, very conservative. And then, on the other hand, the Pharisees were more plentiful, and they were spread all over the countryside. So, they were way, way, way more in touch with the people. And, so, collectively when you have a Council made up of Sadducees and Pharisees that would be called the Sanhedrin and these were the people who, you know, maybe had a couple different points of view, but they would wrestle through it and interpret and enforce the Mosaic law and then teach people how to obey it. So, one of them big distinctions between Sadducees and Pharisees was that they had very, very different thoughts about the afterlife, especially about resurrection from the dead. Sadducees didn’t believe that the dead would rise again. For them, like a person would die and then they would return to God and then like, that’s that, the end of the story. So, Pharisees, on the other hand, they did have a hope in the resurrection from the dead. So, we, you know, from that perspective we could say that even Jesus took a pharisaical view on this particular point and it was the pharisaical view that actually prevailed in the end, historically. So, Paul, as a trained Pharisee, he was hoping in resurrection. He actually had that in common with Jesus even though he hated Jesus and he hated Jesus followers because of what it was…basically because it was like heresy to him as a very very trained Pharisee. So, he would’ve kept persecuting believers in Jesus if he had not had an experience with the resurrected Christ, right, with someone who had been resurrected. And that was his hope, that that was his defense when he found himself, you know, before the Sanhedrin back in the book of Acts. Jesus resurrection, that was the thing that proved all of it for Paul. This made all of his religious convictions true. So, in Paul’s view Jesus resurrection was like the only…like the centerpiece for it all. The reason Jesus mattered was because he was resurrected and that was proof that God was doing something new in the world. And that’s where we spent our time today in first Corinthians in the 15th chapter. So, let’s take that with us into this day - the implications of the resurrection. Like, we kind of take that for granted. Like, we just take it for granted. But as believers the resurrection from the dead is our hope but think about the two camps. The Sanhedrin, right? Think of the Pharisees and the Sadducees because you begin to wonder, like, where would you be on that…on that continuum? Because to believe in the resurrection, that means, that means that you will one day and I will one day after we have died awaken from the dead and rise, right? So, that’s not a metaphor, like that’s a pretty big deal. And, so, you think, “well, is that how it works? Is that how it’s gonna work? Is that how resurrection happens? Like, what if…”. But the thing is, without the resurrection as the centerpiece of our faith, the entire faith is useless. And that’s according to the apostle Paul not just according to our own reason, even though our own reason, like, is correct. Without the resurrection there isn’t any hope. I believe. Paul believed that Jesus indeed did rise from the dead and I believe that that was showing us what’s to come. And that gives us hope that is…that is eternal. But carry that into your day today by simply, you know, thinking about like, “would I have been a Sadducee, or would I have been a Pharisee?” You know, like, “What am I functionally believing today?” And that could be a little disruptive, but as we have learned, the Bible has no problem with being disruptive and we should stop fighting disruption. Those little things that come and make us go, “hmmmm, let me think about that some more.” That’s a good thing. That’s wrestling. Like that’s a good thing. And as we can see from the book of Job, the Bible has no problem with our wrestling, it’s part of the deal. God has no problem with that. And, so, let’s carry this today, and just kind of look at how it is that we live our lives as it relates to not only Christ’s resurrection, but our resurrection.

Prayer:

Holy Spirit, we invite You into that. We invite You to help us to wrestle with how we live versus how we need to believe and what we need to live into. And we invite You fully into that knowing that You’ve given us permission to wrestle with these kinds of things. And in whatever way we wrestle You are still present to us and leading us forward. So, come Holy Spirit we pray. In the mighty name of Jesus, we ask. Amen.

Job 8-11

Bildad Speaks

Then Bildad the Shuhite replied:

How long will you go on saying these things?
Your words(A) are a blast of wind.(B)
Does God pervert justice?(C)
Does the Almighty pervert what is right?(D)
Since your children sinned against him,
he gave them over to their rebellion.
But if you earnestly seek(E) God
and ask the Almighty for mercy,(F)
if you are pure and upright,
then he will move even now on your behalf
and restore the home where your righteousness dwells.(G)
Then, even if your beginnings were modest,
your final days will be full of prosperity.(H)

For ask the previous generation,
and pay attention to what their fathers discovered,(I)
since we were born only yesterday and know nothing.
Our days on earth are but a shadow.(J)
10 Will they not teach you and tell you
and speak from their understanding?
11 Does papyrus grow where there is no marsh?
Do reeds flourish without water?
12 While still uncut shoots,
they would dry up quicker than any other plant.
13 Such is the destiny[a] of all who forget God;
the hope of the godless(K) will perish.

14 His source of confidence is fragile;[b]
what he trusts in is a spider’s web.(L)
15 He leans on his web, but it doesn’t stand firm.
He grabs it, but it does not hold up.
16 He is a well-watered plant in the sunshine;
his shoots spread out over his garden.
17 His roots are intertwined around a pile of rocks.
He looks for a home among the stones.
18 If he is uprooted[c] from his place,
it will deny knowing him, saying, “I never saw you.”(M)
19 Surely this is the joy of his way of life;
yet others will sprout from the dust.
20 Look, God does not reject a person of integrity,
and he will not support[d] evildoers.(N)

21 He will yet fill your mouth with laughter
and your lips with a shout of joy.(O)
22 Your enemies will be clothed with shame;(P)
the tent(Q) of the wicked will no longer exist.

Job’s Reply to Bildad

Then Job answered:

Yes, I know what you’ve said is true,
but how can a person be justified before God?(R)
If one wanted to take(S) him to court,
he could not answer God[e] once in a thousand times.(T)
God is wise(U) and all-powerful.
Who has opposed him and come out unharmed?
He removes mountains without their knowledge,
overturning them in his anger.(V)
He shakes the earth from its place
so that its pillars tremble.
He commands the sun not to shine
and seals off the stars.(W)
He alone stretches out the heavens(X)
and treads on the waves of the sea.[f]
He makes the stars: the Bear,[g] Orion,
the Pleiades,(Y) and the constellations[h] of the southern sky.
10 He does great and unsearchable things,
wonders without number.(Z)
11 If he passed by me, I wouldn’t see him;(AA)
if he went by, I wouldn’t recognize him.
12 If he snatches something, who can stop[i] him?
Who can ask him, “What are you doing?” (AB)
13 God does not hold back his anger;
Rahab’s(AC) assistants cringe in fear beneath him!
14 How then can I answer him
or choose my arguments against him?
15 Even if I were in the right, I could not answer.
I could only beg my Judge for mercy.(AD)
16 If I summoned him and he answered me,
I do not believe he would pay attention to what I said.
17 He batters me with a whirlwind(AE)
and multiplies my wounds without cause.
18 He doesn’t let me catch my breath
but fills me with bitter experiences.
19 If it is a matter of strength, look, he is the powerful one!(AF)
If it is a matter of justice, who can summon(AG) him?[j]
20 Even if I were in the right, my own mouth would condemn me;(AH)
if I were blameless, my mouth would declare me guilty.
21 Though I am blameless,
I no longer care about myself;
I renounce my life.(AI)
22 It is all the same. Therefore I say,
“He destroys both the blameless and the wicked.”(AJ)
23 When catastrophe[k] brings sudden death,
he mocks the despair of the innocent.
24 The earth[l] is handed over to the wicked;
he blindfolds[m] its judges.(AK)
If it isn’t he, then who is it?

25 My days fly by faster than a runner;[n](AL)
they flee without seeing any good.(AM)
26 They sweep by like boats made of papyrus,
like an eagle swooping down on its prey.(AN)
27 If I said, “I will forget my complaint,
change my expression, and smile,”
28 I would still live in terror of all my pains.(AO)
I know you will not acquit me.(AP)
29 Since I will be found guilty,(AQ)
why should I struggle in vain?
30 If I wash myself with snow,
and cleanse my hands with lye,
31 then you dip me in a pit of mud,
and my own clothes despise me!

32 For he is not a man like me, that I can answer him,(AR)
that we can take each other to court.
33 There is no mediator between us,
to lay his hand on both of us.
34 Let him take his rod away from me
so his terror will no longer frighten me.(AS)
35 Then I would speak and not fear him.
But that is not the case; I am on my own.

10 I am disgusted with my life.(AT)
I will give vent to my complaint
and speak in the bitterness of my soul.
I will say to God,
“Do not declare me guilty!
Let me know why you prosecute me.
Is it good for you to oppress,
to reject the work of your hands,(AU)
and favor[o] the plans of the wicked?(AV)
Do you have eyes of flesh,
or do you see as a human sees?
Are your days like those of a human,
or your years like those of a man,(AW)
that you look for my iniquity(AX)
and search for my sin,
even though you know that I am not wicked
and that there is no one who can rescue from your power?(AY)

“Your hands shaped me and formed me.(AZ)
Will you now turn and destroy me?
Please remember that you formed me like clay.
Will you now return me to dust?(BA)
10 Did you not pour me out like milk
and curdle me like cheese?
11 You clothed me with skin and flesh,
and wove me together with bones and tendons.(BB)
12 You gave me life and faithful love,
and your care has guarded my life.

13 “Yet you concealed these thoughts in your heart;
I know that this was your hidden plan:[p]
14 if I sin, you would notice,[q]
and would not acquit me of my iniquity.(BC)
15 If I am wicked, woe to me!
And even if I am righteous, I cannot lift up my head.
I am filled with shame(BD)
and have drunk deeply of[r] my affliction.(BE)
16 If I am proud,[s] you hunt me like a lion
and again display your miraculous power against me.(BF)
17 You produce new witnesses[t] against me
and multiply your anger toward me.
Hardships assault me, wave after wave.[u]

18 “Why did you bring me out of the womb?(BG)
I should have died and never been seen.
19 I wish[v] I had never existed
but had been carried from the womb to the grave.(BH)
20 Are my days not few? Stop it![w]
Leave me alone, so that I can smile a little
21 before I go to a land of darkness and gloom,(BI)
never to return.
22 It is a land of blackness like the deepest darkness,
gloomy and chaotic,
where even the light is like[x] the darkness.”

Zophar Speaks

11 Then Zophar the Naamathite replied:

Should this abundance of words(BJ) go unanswered
and such a talker[y] be acquitted?
Should your babbling put others to silence,
so that you can keep on ridiculing
with no one to humiliate you?
You have said, “My teaching(BK) is sound,
and I am pure in your sight.”
But if only God would speak
and open his lips against you!
He would show you the secrets of wisdom,(BL)
for true wisdom has two sides.
Know then that God has chosen to overlook some of your iniquity.(BM)

Can you fathom the depths of God
or discover the limits of the Almighty?(BN)
They are higher than the heavens—what can you do?
They are deeper than Sheol—what can you know?(BO)
Their measure is longer than the earth
and wider than the sea.

10 If he passes by and throws someone in prison
or convenes a court, who can stop him?(BP)
11 Surely he knows which people are worthless.
If he sees iniquity, will he not take note of it?(BQ)
12 But a stupid person will gain understanding
as soon as a wild donkey is born a human!

13 As for you, if you redirect your heart
and spread out your hands to him in prayer—
14 if there is iniquity in your hand, remove it,
and don’t allow injustice to dwell in your tents—
15 then you will hold your head high, free from fault.
You will be firmly established and unafraid.(BR)
16 For you will forget your suffering,
recalling it only as water that has flowed by.
17 Your life will be brighter than noonday;
its darkness[z] will be like the morning.(BS)
18 You will be confident, because there is hope.(BT)
You will look carefully about and lie down in safety.(BU)

19 You will lie down with no one to frighten you,
and many will seek your favor.(BV)
20 But the sight of the wicked(BW) will fail.
Their way of escape will be cut off,
and their only hope is their last breath.(BX)

1 Corinthians 15:1-28

Resurrection Essential to the Gospel

15 Now I want to make clear for you, brothers and sisters, the gospel I preached to you, which you received, on which you have taken your stand(A) and by which you are being saved, if you hold to the message I preached to you—unless you believed in vain.(B) For I passed on to you(C) as most important what I also received: that Christ died(D) for our sins according to the Scriptures,(E) that he was buried,(F) that he was raised on the third day(G) according to the Scriptures,(H) and that he appeared to Cephas,(I) then to the Twelve.(J) Then he appeared to over five hundred brothers and sisters at one time;(K) most of them are still alive, but some have fallen asleep. Then he appeared to James,(L) then to all the apostles.(M) Last of all, as to one born at the wrong time,[a](N) he also appeared to me.(O)

For I am the least of the apostles,(P) not worthy to be called an apostle, because I persecuted(Q) the church of God. 10 But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace toward me was not in vain. On the contrary, I worked harder than any of them, yet not I, but the grace of God that was with me.(R) 11 Whether, then, it is I or they, so we proclaim and so you have believed.

Resurrection Essential to the Faith

12 Now if Christ is proclaimed as raised from the dead,(S) how can some of you say, “There is no resurrection of the dead”?(T) 13 If there is no resurrection of the dead, then not even Christ has been raised; 14 and if Christ has not been raised, then our proclamation is in vain, and so is your faith.[b] 15 Moreover, we are found to be false witnesses(U) about God, because we have testified(V) wrongly about God that he raised up Christ—whom he did not raise up, if in fact the dead are not raised. 16 For if the dead are not raised, not even Christ has been raised. 17 And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is worthless; you are still in your sins. 18 Those, then, who have fallen asleep in Christ(W) have also perished. 19 If we have put our hope in Christ for this life only, we should be pitied more than anyone.

Christ’s Resurrection Guarantees Ours

20 But as it is, Christ has been raised from the dead, the firstfruits(X) of those who have fallen asleep. 21 For since death(Y) came through a man,(Z) the resurrection of the dead also comes through a man.(AA) 22 For just as in Adam all die, so also in Christ all will be made alive.(AB)

23 But each in his own order:(AC) Christ, the firstfruits; afterward, at his coming, those who belong to Christ. 24 Then comes the end,(AD) when he hands over the kingdom to God the Father,(AE) when he abolishes all rule and all authority and power.(AF) 25 For he must reign(AG) until he puts all his enemies under his feet.(AH) 26 The last enemy to be abolished is death.(AI) 27 For God has put everything under his feet.[c](AJ) Now when it says “everything” is put under him, it is obvious that he who puts everything under him is the exception. 28 When everything is subject to Christ, then the Son(AK) himself will also be subject to the one who subjected everything to him, so that God may be all in all.(AL)

Psalm 38

Psalm 38

Prayer of a Suffering Sinner

A psalm of David to bring remembrance.(A)

Lord, do not punish me in your anger
or discipline me in your wrath.(B)
For your arrows have sunk into me,
and your hand has pressed down on me.(C)

There is no soundness in my body
because of your indignation;
there is no health[a] in my bones
because of my sin.(D)
For my iniquities have flooded over my head;
they are a burden too heavy for me to bear.(E)
My wounds are foul and festering
because of my foolishness.(F)
I am bent over and brought very low;
all day long I go around in mourning.(G)
For my insides are full of burning pain,
and there is no soundness in my body.(H)
I am faint and severely crushed;
I groan because of the anguish of my heart.(I)

Lord, my every desire is in front of you;
my sighing is not hidden from you.(J)
10 My heart races, my strength leaves me,
and even the light of my eyes has faded.[b](K)
11 My loved ones and friends stand back from my affliction,
and my relatives stand at a distance.(L)
12 Those who intend to kill me set traps,
and those who want to harm me threaten to destroy me;
they plot treachery all day long.(M)

13 I am like a deaf person; I do not hear.
I am like a speechless person
who does not open his mouth.(N)
14 I am like a man who does not hear
and has no arguments in his mouth.(O)
15 For I put my hope in you, Lord;
you will answer me, my Lord, my God.(P)
16 For I said, “Don’t let them rejoice over me—
those who are arrogant toward me when I stumble.”(Q)
17 For I am about to fall,
and my pain is constantly with me.(R)
18 So I confess my iniquity;
I am anxious because of my sin.(S)
19 But my enemies are vigorous and powerful;[c]
many hate me for no reason.(T)
20 Those who repay evil for good
attack me for pursuing good.(U)

21 Lord, do not abandon me;
my God, do not be far from me.(V)
22 Hurry to help me,
my Lord, my salvation.(W)

Job 4:1-7:21, 1 Cor 14:18-40, Psalms 37:30-40, Proverbs 21:27

Today’s the 22nd day of August. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I am Brian. It’s great to be here with you today as we move through the back half of the week now. So, yesterday in the center of the week we began some new territory in the Bible as we began the book of Job and we kind of talked about that. And as we got into the book we saw sort of the scenario, this horrible day that Job experienced in which he lost everything of value, everything that he loved. His friends came and sat with him, sat Shiva with him, we talked about that. So, now as we continue through the book of Job, we’ll see the conversations between the friends and Job begin to materialize. And, so, Job, he really wants answers, he wants to know why, but at the same time he doesn’t have those answers because he doesn’t know that there is one because he doesn’t believe he’s done anything wrong. He’s like actually tried really hard to be a righteous person. And, so, his friends are gonna tell him why these things happened, but that’s not gonna work for Job. Job wants to hear straight from God. And, so we begin. Today Job 4 through 7 and we’re reading from the Christian Standard Bible this week.

Commentary:

Okay. So, as we mentioned yesterday when we were getting into the book of Job, and even as we kind of recapped at the beginning of today’s reading, unspeakable tragedy descended upon Job, horrible, horrible tragedy in his life and then his friends came and they set Shiva and waited, but the rest of the book…most of the rest of the book is a conversation between these friends and Job. And, so, that conversation has begun, and Job’s poured out the anguish of his soul. And then today Job’s friend named Eliphaz was trying to comfort him, and he was essentially trying to say to Job, “look, things happen for a reason”, but that if Job would just trust in the Lord, like if he would just put his trust in God, then God would rescue and restore him. So, that sounds like something any of us would say, right? It’s a very familiar…we say these kinds of things all the time when we’re…when we’re trying to be comforting and we’ll see that’s happening throughout the book. I mean, there’s a point they’re gonna get mad at each other, but his friends are trying to reason with Job, they’re trying to sort this out and try to help him with all of all the right things to say, basically. But Job knows all the right things to say. That's…that’s the thing. He knows all the right things to say. He’s been the comforter too, like he knows how to say it. In other words, he has the theology, right? Like, he can say the right thing but it’s not working. It’s not enough. And, so, Job just becomes more agitated as they try to basically talk him out of his position and give him all of the right things to say, but the right things to say are not providing any real answers for Job. He doesn’t want human explanations. He doesn’t want them to say the right thing and rationalize it all out and smooth out all the hard edges and realities. Job wants God to come personally and explain exactly what he did wrong to incur the judgment that he thinks God is…is pouring out upon him. And he does think this. He said it was his own mouth. Like, so just like quoting from Job, “surely the arrows of the Almighty have pierced me. My spirit drinks their poison. God’s terrors are arrayed against me.” So, as we continue through the weekend and into next week, more of this conversation between Job and his friends, this is gonna be heard. And if we pay attention we’re gonna find that that we can identify with both sides of the conversation. We can identify with Job’s suffering and confusion, but we’ll also be able to hear our own voices in what his friends are offering us counsel, comfort. And, so, you know, after that doesn’t work, c,omforts gonna turn to debate and debates gonna to turn to argument and that’s gonna take us through all the different aspects of our own suffering. And we should start wondering like, who’s right here, which is the point…which is the point. And, so let’s stay connected to the story of Job over these next days because it’s actually taking us into our own suffering and…and it’s revealing that we know way, way, way less than we think we do.

Prayer:

Father, we invite You into that. We all suffer. We don’t like to talk about it unless it’s happening and then we talk about it incessantly, but we would rather avoid it altogether. In fact we…we set our lives up in such a way that we do battle against it continually and when we are suffering we are rarely thinking that this has purpose and that something good is happening inside of us, or that something good will come from it. We’re just lost in it and it’s a very confusing thing. And, so, we thank You for allowing us to explore it together and to explore it from ancient times in the book of Job. Come Holy Spirit we pray. In the name of Jesus we ask. Amen.

Job 4-7

First Series of Speeches

Eliphaz Speaks

Then Eliphaz the Temanite replied:

Should anyone try to speak with you
when you are exhausted?
Yet who can keep from speaking?
Indeed, you have instructed many
and have strengthened(A) weak hands.
Your words have steadied the one who was stumbling
and braced the knees that were buckling.(B)
But now that this has happened to you,
you have become exhausted.
It strikes(C) you, and you are dismayed.
Isn’t your piety your confidence,
and the integrity of your life[a] your hope?(D)
Consider: Who has perished when he was innocent?
Where have the honest[b] been destroyed?(E)
In my experience, those who plow injustice
and those who sow trouble(F) reap the same.(G)
They perish at a single blast(H) from God
and come to an end by the breath of his nostrils.(I)
10 The lion may roar and the fierce lion(J) growl,
but the teeth of young lions are broken.(K)
11 The strong lion dies if it catches no prey,
and the cubs of the lioness are scattered.(L)

12 A word was brought to me in secret;
my ears caught a whisper of it.(M)
13 Among unsettling thoughts from visions in the night,(N)
when deep sleep(O) comes over men,
14 fear and trembling came over me(P)
and made all my bones shake.
15 I felt a draft[c] on my face,
and the hair on my body stood up.
16 A figure stood there,
but I could not recognize its appearance;
a form loomed before my eyes.
I heard a whispering voice:
17 “Can a mortal be righteous before God?
Can a man be more pure than his Maker?” (Q)
18 If God puts no trust in his servants
and he charges his angels with foolishness,[d](R)
19 how much more those who dwell in clay houses,(S)
whose foundation is in the dust,
who are crushed like a moth!
20 They are smashed to pieces from dawn to dusk;
they perish forever while no one notices.(T)
21 Are their tent cords not pulled up?
They die without wisdom.(U)

Call out! Will anyone answer you?
Which of the holy ones(V) will you turn to?
For anger kills a fool,
and jealousy slays the gullible.(W)
I have seen a fool taking root,
but I immediately pronounced a curse on his home.
His children are far from safety.
They are crushed at the city gate,(X)
with no one to rescue them.
The hungry consume his harvest,
even taking it out of the thorns.[e]
The thirsty[f] pant for his children’s wealth.
For distress does not grow out of the soil,
and trouble does not sprout from the ground.
But humans are born for trouble(Y)
as surely as sparks fly upward.

However, if I were you, I would appeal to God
and would present my case to him.(Z)
He does great(AA) and unsearchable things,
wonders without number.(AB)
10 He gives rain to the earth
and sends water to the fields.(AC)
11 He sets the lowly on high,
and mourners are lifted to safety.(AD)
12 He frustrates the schemes of the crafty
so that they[g] achieve no success.
13 He traps the wise in their craftiness
so that the plans of the deceptive
are quickly brought to an end.(AE)
14 They encounter darkness by day,
and they grope at noon
as if it were night.(AF)
15 He saves the needy from their sharp words[h](AG)
and from the clutches of the powerful.
16 So the poor have hope,
and injustice shuts its mouth.(AH)
17 See how happy is the person whom God corrects;
so do not reject the discipline of the Almighty.
18 For he wounds but he also bandages;
he strikes, but his hands also heal.(AI)
19 He will rescue you from six calamities;
no harm will touch you in seven.
20 In famine he will redeem you from death,
and in battle, from the power of the sword.(AJ)
21 You will be safe from slander[i]
and not fear destruction when it comes.(AK)
22 You will laugh at destruction and hunger
and not fear the land’s wild creatures.
23 For you will have a covenant with the stones of the field,
and the wild animals will be at peace with you.(AL)
24 You will know that your tent is secure,(AM)
and nothing will be missing when you inspect your home.
25 You will also know that your offspring will be many
and your descendants like the grass of the earth.
26 You will approach the grave(AN) in full vigor,(AO)
as a stack of sheaves is gathered in its season.

27 We have investigated this, and it is true!
Hear it and understand it for yourself.

Job’s Reply to Eliphaz

Then Job answered:

If only my grief could be weighed
and my devastation(AP) placed with it on the scales.(AQ)
For then it would outweigh the sand of the seas!
That is why my words are rash.
Surely the arrows of the Almighty have pierced[j] me;
my spirit drinks their poison.
God’s terrors are arrayed against me.(AR)
Does a wild donkey bray over fresh grass
or an ox low over its fodder?
Is bland food eaten without salt?
Is there flavor in an egg white?[k]
I refuse to touch them;
they are like contaminated food.(AS)

If only my request would be granted
and God would provide what I hope for:
that he would decide to crush me,
to unleash his power and cut me off!
10 It would still bring me comfort,
and I would leap for joy in unrelenting pain
that I have not denied[l] the words of the Holy One.(AT)

11 What strength do I have, that I should continue to hope?
What is my future, that I should be patient?
12 Is my strength that of stone,
or my flesh made of bronze?
13 Since I cannot help myself,
the hope for success has been banished from me.

14 A despairing man should receive loyalty from his friends,[m](AU)
even if he abandons the fear of the Almighty.
15 My brothers are as treacherous as a wadi,
as seasonal streams that overflow
16 and become darkened[n] because of ice,
and the snow melts into them.
17 The wadis evaporate in warm weather;
they disappear from their channels in hot weather.
18 Caravans turn away from their routes,
go up into the desert, and perish.
19 The caravans of Tema look for these streams.
The traveling merchants of Sheba hope for them.
20 They are ashamed because they had been confident of finding water.
When they arrive there, they are disappointed.(AV)
21 So this is what you have now become to me.[o]
When you see something dreadful, you are afraid.
22 Have I ever said: “Give me something”
or “Pay a bribe for me from your wealth”
23 or “Deliver me from the enemy’s hand”
or “Redeem me from the hand of the ruthless”?

24 Teach me, and I will be silent.
Help me understand what I did wrong.
25 How painful honest words can be!
But what does your rebuke prove?
26 Do you think that you can disprove my words
or that a despairing man’s words are mere wind?(AW)
27 No doubt you would cast lots for a fatherless child
and negotiate a price to sell your friend.(AX)

28 But now, please look at me;
I will not lie to your face.(AY)
29 Reconsider; don’t be unjust.
Reconsider; my righteousness(AZ) is still the issue.
30 Is there injustice on my tongue
or can my palate not taste disaster?(BA)

Isn’t each person consigned to forced labor(BB) on earth?
Are not his days like those of a hired worker?
Like a slave he longs for shade;
like a hired worker he waits for his pay.
So I have been made to inherit months of futility,
and troubled nights have been assigned to me.(BC)
When I lie down I think,
“When will I get up?”
But the evening drags on endlessly,
and I toss and turn until dawn.
My flesh is clothed with maggots and encrusted with dirt.[p]
My skin forms scabs[q] and then oozes.(BD)

My days pass more swiftly than a weaver’s shuttle;
they come to an end without hope.(BE)
Remember that my life is but a breath.
My eye will never again see anything good.(BF)
The eye of anyone who looks on me
will no longer see me.
Your eyes will look for me, but I will be gone.(BG)
As a cloud fades away and vanishes,
so the one who goes down to Sheol(BH) will never rise again.
10 He will never return to his house;
his hometown will no longer remember[r] him.(BI)

11 Therefore I will not restrain my mouth.
I will speak in the anguish of my spirit;
I will complain in the bitterness of my soul.
12 Am I the sea[s](BJ) or a sea monster,(BK)
that you keep me under guard?
13 When I say, “My bed will comfort me,
and my couch will ease my complaint,”
14 then you frighten me with dreams,
and terrify me with visions,(BL)
15 so that I prefer strangling[t]
death rather than life in this body.[u](BM)
16 I give up! I will not live forever.
Leave me alone,(BN) for my days are a breath.[v]

17 What is a mere human, that you think so highly of him
and pay so much attention to him?(BO)
18 You inspect him every morning,
and put him to the test every moment.(BP)
19 Will you ever look away from me,
or leave me alone long enough to swallow?[w]
20 If I have sinned, what have I done to you,
Watcher of humanity?
Why have you made me your target,(BQ)
so that I have become a burden to you?[x]
21 Why not forgive my sin
and pardon my iniquity?(BR)
For soon I will lie down in the grave.(BS)
You will eagerly seek me, but I will be gone.(BT)

1 Corinthians 14:18-40

18 I thank(A) God that I speak in other tongues more than all of you; 19 yet in the church I would rather speak five words(B) with my understanding, in order to teach others also, than ten thousand words in another tongue.

20 Brothers and sisters, don’t be childish in your thinking, but be infants in regard to evil and adult in your thinking.(C) 21 It is written in the law,

I will speak to this people
by people of other tongues
and by the lips of foreigners,
and even then, they will not listen to me,[a](D)

says the Lord. 22 Speaking in other tongues, then, is intended as a sign, not for believers but for unbelievers, while prophecy is not for unbelievers but for believers. 23 If, therefore, the whole church assembles together and all are speaking in other tongues and people who are outsiders or unbelievers come in, will they not say that you are out of your minds? 24 But if all are prophesying and some unbeliever or outsider comes in, he is convicted by all and is called to account by all. 25 The secrets of his heart will be revealed, and as a result he will fall facedown and worship God, proclaiming, “God is really among you.”(E)

Order in Church Meetings

26 What then, brothers and sisters? Whenever you come together, each one[b] has a hymn, a teaching, a revelation, another tongue, or an interpretation.(F) Everything is to be done for building up. 27 If anyone speaks in another tongue, there are to be only two, or at the most three, each in turn, and let someone interpret. 28 But if there is no interpreter, that person is to keep silent in the church and speak to himself and God. 29 Two or three prophets should speak, and the others should evaluate.(G) 30 But if something has been revealed to another person sitting there, the first prophet should be silent. 31 For you can all prophesy one by one, so that everyone may learn and everyone may be encouraged.(H) 32 And the prophets’ spirits are subject to the prophets, 33 since God is not a God of disorder but of peace.

As in all the churches of the saints,(I) 34 the women[c] should be silent in the churches,(J) for they are not permitted to speak, but are to submit themselves, as the law also says. 35 If they want to learn something, let them ask their own husbands(K) at home, since it is disgraceful for a woman to speak in the church. 36 Or did the word of God originate from you, or did it come to you only?

37 If anyone thinks he is a prophet or spiritual, he should recognize that what I write to you is the Lord’s command. 38 If anyone ignores this, he will be ignored.[d] 39 So then, my brothers and sisters, be eager(L) to prophesy, and do not forbid speaking in other tongues. 40 But everything is to be done decently(M) and in order.

Psalm 37:30-40

30 The mouth of the righteous utters wisdom;
his tongue speaks what is just.(A)
31 The instruction of his God is in his heart;
his steps do not falter.(B)

32 The wicked one lies in wait for the righteous
and intends to kill him;(C)
33 the Lord will not leave him
in the power of the wicked one
or allow him to be condemned when he is judged.(D)

34 Wait for the Lord and keep his way,
and he will exalt you to inherit the land.
You will watch when the wicked are destroyed.(E)

35 I have seen a wicked, violent person
well-rooted,[a] like a flourishing native tree.(F)
36 Then I[b] passed by and noticed he was gone;
I searched for him, but he could not be found.(G)

37 Watch the blameless and observe the upright,
for the person of peace will have a future.[c](H)
38 But transgressors will all be eliminated;
the future of the wicked will be destroyed.(I)

39 The salvation of the righteous is from the Lord,
their refuge in a time of distress.(J)
40 The Lord helps and delivers them;
he will deliver them from the wicked and will save them
because they take refuge in him.(K)

how much more so
when he brings it with ulterior motives!(A)
