Judges 6

Midian Oppresses Israel

(A)The people of Israel did what was evil in the sight of the Lord, and the Lord gave them into the hand of (B)Midian seven years. And the hand of Midian overpowered Israel, and because of Midian the people of Israel made for themselves the dens that are in the mountains and (C)the caves and the strongholds. For whenever the Israelites planted crops, the Midianites and (D)the Amalekites and (E)the people of the East would come up against them. They would encamp against them (F)and devour the produce of the land, as far as Gaza, and leave no sustenance in Israel and no sheep or ox or donkey. For they would come up with their livestock and their tents; they would come (G)like locusts in number—both they and their camels could not be counted—so that they laid waste the land as they came in. And Israel was brought very low because of Midian. And the people of Israel (H)cried out for help to the Lord.

When the people of Israel cried out to the Lord on account of the Midianites, the Lord sent a prophet to the people of Israel. And he said to them, “Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: (I)I led you up from Egypt and brought you out of the house of slavery. And I delivered you from the hand of the Egyptians and from the hand of all who oppressed you, and (J)drove them out before you and gave you their land. 10 And I said to you, ‘I am the Lord your God; (K)you shall not fear the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell.’ But you have not obeyed my voice.”

The Call of Gideon

11 Now the angel of the Lord came and sat under the terebinth at Ophrah, which belonged to Joash (L)the Abiezrite, while his son (M)Gideon was beating out wheat in the winepress to hide it from the Midianites. 12 And (N)the angel of the Lord appeared to him and said to him, (O)“The Lord is with you, O mighty man of valor.” 13 And Gideon said to him, “Please, my lord, if the Lord is with us, why then has all this happened to us? And where are (P)all his wonderful deeds (Q)that our fathers recounted to us, saying, ‘Did not the Lord bring us up from Egypt?’ But now the Lord has forsaken us and given us into the hand of Midian.” 14 And the Lord[a] turned to him and said, “Go in this might of yours and save Israel from the hand of Midian; (R)do not I send you?” 15 And he said to him, (S)“Please, Lord, how can I save Israel? Behold, (T)my clan is the weakest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my father's house.” 16 And the Lord said to him, (U)“But I will be with you, and you shall strike the Midianites as one man.” 17 And he said to him, (V)“If now I have found favor in your eyes, then (W)show me a sign that it is you who speak with me. 18 Please (X)do not depart from here until I come to you and bring out my present and set it before you.” And he said, “I will stay till you return.”

19 So Gideon went into his house (Y)and prepared a young goat and unleavened cakes from an ephah[b] of flour. The meat he put in a basket, and the broth he put in a pot, and brought them to him under the terebinth and presented them. 20 And the angel of God said to him, “Take the meat and the unleavened cakes, and put them (Z)on this rock, and (AA)pour the broth over them.” And he did so. 21 Then the angel of the Lord reached out the tip of the staff that was in his hand and touched the meat and the unleavened cakes. (AB)And fire sprang up from the rock and consumed the meat and the unleavened cakes. And the angel of the Lord vanished from his sight. 22 Then Gideon perceived that he was the angel of the Lord. And Gideon said, (AC)“Alas, O Lord God! For now I have seen the angel of the Lord face to face.” 23 But the Lord said to him, (AD)“Peace be to you. Do not fear; you shall not die.” 24 Then Gideon built an altar there to the Lord and called it, (AE)The Lord Is Peace. To this day it still stands at (AF)Ophrah, which belongs to the Abiezrites.

25 That night the Lord said to him, “Take your father's bull, and the second bull seven years old, and pull down the altar of Baal that your father has, and cut down (AG)the Asherah that is beside it 26 and build an altar to the Lord your God on the top of the (AH)stronghold here, with stones laid in due order. Then take the second bull and offer it as a burnt offering with the wood of the Asherah that you shall cut down.” 27 So Gideon took ten men of his servants and did as the Lord had told him. But because he was too afraid of his family and the men of the town to do it by day, he did it by night.

Gideon Destroys the Altar of Baal

28 When the men of the town rose early in the morning, behold, the altar of Baal was broken down, and the Asherah beside it was cut down, and the second bull was offered on the altar that had been built. 29 And they said to one another, “Who has done this thing?” And after they had searched and inquired, they said, “Gideon the son of Joash has done this thing.” 30 Then the men of the town said to Joash, “Bring out your son, that he may die, for he has broken down the altar of Baal and cut down the Asherah beside it.” 31 But Joash said to all who stood against him, “Will you contend for Baal? Or will you save him? Whoever contends for him shall be put to death by morning. If he is a god, let him contend for himself, because his altar has been broken down.” 32 Therefore on that day Gideon[c] was called (AI)Jerubbaal, that is to say, “Let Baal contend against him,” because he broke down his altar.

33 Now (AJ)all the Midianites and the Amalekites and the people of the East came together, and they crossed the Jordan and encamped in (AK)the Valley of Jezreel. 34 But (AL)the Spirit of the Lord clothed Gideon, (AM)and he sounded the trumpet, and the Abiezrites were called out to follow him. 35 (AN)And he sent messengers throughout all Manasseh, and they too were called out to follow him. (AO)And he sent messengers to Asher, Zebulun, and Naphtali, and they went up to meet them.

The Sign of the Fleece

36 (AP)Then Gideon said to God, “If you will save Israel by my hand, as you have said, 37 behold, I am laying a fleece of wool on the threshing floor. If there is dew on the fleece alone, and it is dry on all the ground, then I shall know that you will save Israel by my hand, as you have said.” 38 And it was so. When he rose early next morning and squeezed the fleece, he wrung enough dew from the fleece to fill a bowl with water. 39 Then Gideon said to God, (AQ)“Let not your anger burn against me; let me speak just once more. Please let me test just once more with the fleece. Please let it be dry on the fleece only, and on all the ground let there be dew.” 40 And God did so that night; and it was dry on the fleece only, and on all the ground there was dew.

Luke 22:54-23:12

Peter Denies Jesus

54 (A)Then they seized him and led him away, bringing him into the high priest's house, (B)and Peter was following at a distance. 55 (C)And when they had kindled a fire in the middle of (D)the courtyard and sat down together, Peter sat down among them. 56 Then a servant girl, seeing him as he sat in the light and looking closely at him, said, “This man also was with him.” 57 But he denied it, saying, “Woman, I do not know him.” 58 And a little later someone else saw him and said, “You also are one of them.” But Peter said, “Man, I am not.” 59 And after an interval of about an hour still another (E)insisted, saying, “Certainly this man also was with him, for he too is a Galilean.” 60 But Peter said, “Man, I do not know what you are talking about.” And immediately, while he was still speaking, the rooster crowed. 61 And the Lord turned and (F)looked at Peter. And Peter remembered the saying of the Lord, how he had said to him, (G)“Before the rooster crows today, you will (H)deny me three times.” 62 And he went out and wept bitterly.

Jesus Is Mocked

63 (I)Now the men who were holding Jesus in custody were mocking him as they beat him. 64 (J)They also blindfolded him and kept asking him, (K)“Prophesy! (L)Who is it that struck you?” 65 And they said many other things against him, (M)blaspheming him.

Jesus Before the Council

66 (N)When day came, (O)the assembly of the elders of the people gathered together, both chief priests and scribes. And they led him away to their (P)council, and they (Q)said, 67 (R)“If you are (S)the Christ, tell us.” But he said to them, “If I tell you, you will not believe, 68 and if I ask you, you will not answer. 69 But from now on the Son of Man shall be seated (T)at the right hand of the power of God.” 70 So they all said, “Are you (U)the Son of God, then?” And he said to them, (V)“You say that I am.” 71 Then they said, “What further testimony do we need? We have heard it ourselves from his own lips.”

Jesus Before Pilate

23 (W)Then the whole company of them arose and brought him before Pilate. And they began to accuse him, saying, “We found this man (X)misleading our nation and (Y)forbidding us to give tribute to (Z)Caesar, and saying that he himself is Christ, (AA)a king.” (AB)And Pilate asked him, (AC)“Are you the King of the Jews?” And he answered him, (AD)“You have said so.” Then Pilate said to the chief priests and the crowds, (AE)“I find no guilt in this man.” But they were urgent, saying, “He stirs up the people, teaching throughout all Judea, (AF)from Galilee even to this place.”

Jesus Before Herod

When Pilate heard this, he asked whether the man was a Galilean. And when he learned that he belonged to (AG)Herod's jurisdiction, he sent him over to Herod, who was himself in Jerusalem at that time. When Herod saw Jesus, he was very glad, (AH)for he had long desired to see him, (AI)because he had heard about him, and he was hoping (AJ)to see some sign done by him. So he questioned him at some length, but he made no answer. 10 The chief priests and the scribes stood by, vehemently accusing him. 11 And Herod with his soldiers (AK)treated him with contempt and (AL)mocked him. Then, (AM)arraying him in splendid clothing, he sent him back to Pilate. 12 And (AN)Herod and Pilate became friends with each other that very day, for before this they had been at enmity with each other.

Psalm 95-96

Let Us Sing Songs of Praise

95 Oh come, let us sing to the Lord;
let us (A)make a joyful noise to (B)the rock of our salvation!
Let us (C)come into his presence with thanksgiving;
let us (D)make a joyful noise to him with songs of praise!
For the Lord is (E)a great God,
and a great King (F)above all gods.
In his hand are the depths of the earth;
the heights of the mountains are his also.
The sea is his, for (G)he made it,
and his hands formed (H)the dry land.

Oh come, let us worship and bow down;
let us (I)kneel before the Lord, our (J)Maker!
For he is our (K)God,
and we are the people of his (L)pasture,
and the sheep of his hand.
(M)Today, if you (N)hear his voice,
(O)do not harden your hearts, as at (P)Meribah,
as on the day at (Q)Massah in the wilderness,
when your fathers put me to the (R)test
and put me to the proof, though they had seen my (S)work.
10 (T)For forty years I loathed that generation
and said, “They are a people who go astray in their heart,
and they have not known (U)my ways.”
11 Therefore I (V)swore in my wrath,
“They shall not enter (W)my rest.”

Worship in the Splendor of Holiness

96 (X)Oh sing to the Lord (Y)a new song;
sing to the Lord, all the earth!
Sing to the Lord, bless his name;
(Z)tell of his salvation from day to day.
Declare his glory among the nations,
his marvelous works among all the peoples!
For (AA)great is the Lord, and (AB)greatly to be praised;
he is to be feared above (AC)all gods.
For all the gods of the peoples are worthless idols,
but the Lord (AD)made the heavens.
Splendor and majesty are before him;
(AE)strength and beauty are in his sanctuary.

Ascribe to the Lord, O (AF)families of the peoples,
(AG)ascribe to the Lord glory and strength!
Ascribe to the Lord (AH)the glory due his name;
bring (AI)an offering, and (AJ)come into his courts!
Worship the Lord in (AK)the splendor of holiness;[a]
(AL)tremble before him, all the earth!

10 Say among the nations, (AM)“The Lord reigns!
Yes, the world is established; it shall never be moved;
he will (AN)judge the peoples with equity.”

11 Let (AO)the heavens be glad, and let (AP)the earth rejoice;
let (AQ)the sea roar, and all that fills it;
12 let (AR)the field exult, and everything in it!
Then shall all (AS)the trees of the forest sing for joy
13 before the Lord, for he comes,
for he comes (AT)to judge the earth.
He will judge the world in righteousness,
and the peoples in his faithfulness.

Judges 4:1-5:31, Luke 22:35-53, Psalms 94:1-23, Proverbs 14:3-4

Today is the 25th day of April. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I am Brian and it is always, always, always a joy to walk in here around the global campfire. And here we are together, stepping outside of all of the responsibilities and obligations and even chaos that’s going on around us, and just let God’s word wash into our lives and in over us and into us and then we leave this time rejuvenated. It’s pretty amazing what can happen in just a few minutes with the Scriptures. So, let’s get to it. We’ve begun the book of Judges and we’re beginning to meet the judges. We met 3 of the 13 judges yesterday. Some of these judges, you know, there’s just a paragraph of mention, others have the full, you know, kind of story and what we’re ultimately learning is what happened after Moses and Joshua, what happened after the children of Israel moved into the promised land. So today we’re reading from the English Standard Version and we’ll read Judges chapters 4 and 5.

Commentary:

Okay. So, in the Old Testament we’re learning of the judge Deborah, a valiant woman leader of Israel and of Jael who did away with the enemy lieutenant general in a way that would’ve at bare minimum taken some bravery, right? You’re sneaking up on a man of war as he sleeps with a tent peg and a hammer and…and yeah you drive the tent peg with the hammer into the head of Sisera, the general and, of course, he dies doing away with the military leader who has been oppressing the children of Israel in their land for a couple of decades, which is powerful imagery. I mean going back into that time, it is an entirely patriarchal world. So, seeing Deborah and Jael once again shows God pulling people forward, pulling…pulling them forward even as they’re doing everything they can to fight against Him and His will and ways for them.

We move into the gospel of Luke and we’re moving back into the passion narrative and we find Jesus in intense agony of prayer in the garden of Gethsemane. And even though we have just passed through Easter and have just kinda lived out this story it comes at a good time. It’s easy for us to get through Easter and just kind of move on. We’ve focused our energy and efforts on the passion narrative and then we just kinda move on. It’s nice to encounter it again and let it sink more deeply into our souls, what it cost, what it cost for us to take for granted, our freedom’s.

Then we get into the book of Proverbs and we hear these words, “where there are no oxen the manger is clean, but abundant crops come by the strength of the ox.” So, if the manger weren’t clean because the ox was there, how would the ox have made the manger dirty. It would’ve made manger dirty by just being itself right and just doing whatever it did, including pooping and peeing all over the place. It has to be cleaned up to keep the barn clean. So, the barn will stay clean without the animals, but the abundant crops won’t come without the strength of the animals. So, you have to maintain the animals in the barn in order to have the strength to have the abundant crops. And this, like most of the Proverbs, simply imitates our lives. The proverb wasn’t written to give us an agricultural lesson. We can kind of deduce that if you’ve got an ox in a barn and you’re not to clean up the barn then the barn’s gonna be disgusting, but in our lives in community things can indeed get messy at times and they need to be maintained and cleaned up, but the strength that we have together is vastly superior than the strength that we have isolated and alone. And if we want an abundant harvest for the kingdom, then we’re going to have to learn to clean up after ourselves and even clean up each other’s messes. It’s gonna get messy. And I think that we can probably even as the body of Christ to deal with the mess if we could get over who we’re going to blame for the mess. And the best possible way that we can do that is to realize that we are all a mess, but together we are strong.

Prayer:

Father, we invite You into that. We work so hard to not look messy. We work so hard to disguise the truth of the fact that we’re all going through the same life at the same time on planet Earth with all of the same challenges and some of us are more challenged than others in certain areas, but we’re all challenged and we’re all struggling and we’re all learning that we are utterly dependent upon You and the faster that we can learn the faster that we can just deal with the mass and we can just clean the barn and we can maintain it and then we can have an abundant harvest for Your kingdom once we get out of our own way and out of Your way. So, come Holy Spirit. Help us to be patient. Help us to offer grace today. Help us to reveal Your kingdom today and be mindful of the fact that’s what we’re doing with every thought, word and deed in our lives. Come Jesus we pray. In Your mighty name we ask. Amen.

Judges 4-5

Deborah and Barak

(A)And the people of Israel again did what was evil in the sight of the Lord after Ehud died. And the Lord (B)sold them into the hand of (C)Jabin king of Canaan, who reigned in (D)Hazor. The commander of his army was (E)Sisera, who lived in (F)Harosheth-hagoyim. Then the people of Israel (G)cried out to the Lord for help, for he had (H)900 chariots of iron and he oppressed the people of Israel cruelly for twenty years.

Now Deborah, a prophetess, the wife of Lappidoth, was judging Israel at that time. She used to sit under the palm of Deborah between Ramah and Bethel in (I)the hill country of Ephraim, and the people of Israel came up to her for judgment. She sent and summoned (J)Barak the son of Abinoam from (K)Kedesh-naphtali and said to him, “Has not the Lord, the God of Israel, commanded you, ‘Go, gather your men at Mount (L)Tabor, taking 10,000 from the people of Naphtali and the people of Zebulun. And I will draw out Sisera, the general of Jabin's army, to meet you by (M)the river Kishon with his chariots and his troops, (N)and I will give him into your hand’?” Barak said to her, “If you will go with me, I will go, but if you will not go with me, I will not go.” And she said, “I will surely go with you. Nevertheless, the road on which you are going will not lead to your glory, for the Lord will (O)sell Sisera into the hand of a woman.” Then Deborah arose and went with Barak to Kedesh. 10 And Barak called out (P)Zebulun and Naphtali to Kedesh. And 10,000 men went up at his heels, and Deborah went up with him.

11 Now Heber (Q)the Kenite had separated from the Kenites, the descendants of (R)Hobab the father-in-law of Moses, and had pitched his tent as far away as the oak in (S)Zaanannim, which is near Kedesh.

12 When Sisera was told that Barak the son of Abinoam had gone up to Mount Tabor, 13 Sisera called out all his chariots, (T)900 chariots of iron, and all the men who were with him, from Harosheth-hagoyim to the river Kishon. 14 And Deborah said to Barak, “Up! For this is the day in which (U)the Lord has given Sisera into your hand. (V)Does not the Lord go out before you?” So Barak went down from Mount Tabor with 10,000 men following him. 15 (W)And the Lord routed Sisera and all his chariots and all his army before Barak by the edge of the sword. And Sisera got down from his chariot and fled away on foot. 16 And Barak pursued the chariots and the army to Harosheth-hagoyim, and all the army of Sisera fell by the edge of the sword; not a man was left.

17 But Sisera fled away on foot to the tent of Jael, the wife of Heber the Kenite, for there was peace between Jabin the king of Hazor and the house of Heber the Kenite. 18 And Jael came out to meet Sisera and said to him, “Turn aside, my lord; turn aside to me; do not be afraid.” So he turned aside to her into the tent, and she covered him with a rug. 19 And he said to her, “Please give me a little water to drink, for I am thirsty.” So she opened (X)a skin of milk and gave him a drink and covered him. 20 And he said to her, “Stand at the opening of the tent, and if any man comes and asks you, ‘Is anyone here?’ say, ‘No.’” 21 But Jael the wife of Heber took a tent peg, and took a hammer in her hand. Then she went softly to him and drove the peg into his temple until it went down into the ground while he was lying fast asleep from weariness. So he died. 22 And behold, as Barak was pursuing Sisera, Jael went out to meet him and said to him, “Come, and I will show you the man whom you are seeking.” So he went in to her tent, and there lay Sisera dead, with the tent peg in his temple.

23 (Y)So on that day God subdued Jabin the king of Canaan before the people of Israel. 24 And the hand of the people of Israel pressed harder and harder against Jabin the king of Canaan, until they destroyed Jabin king of Canaan.

The Song of Deborah and Barak

(Z)Then sang Deborah and Barak the son of Abinoam on that day:

“That the leaders took the lead in Israel,
that (AA)the people offered themselves willingly,
bless the Lord!

“Hear, O kings; give ear, O princes;
to the Lord I will sing;
I will make melody to the Lord, the God of Israel.

Lord, (AB)when you went out from Seir,
when you marched from the region of Edom,
(AC)the earth trembled
and the heavens dropped,
yes, the clouds dropped water.
The mountains (AD)quaked before the Lord,
(AE)even Sinai before the Lord,[a] the God of Israel.

“In the days of (AF)Shamgar, son of Anath,
in the days of (AG)Jael, (AH)the highways were abandoned,
and travelers kept to the byways.
The villagers ceased in Israel;
they ceased to be until I arose;
I, Deborah, arose as a mother in Israel.
(AI)When new gods were chosen,
then war was in the gates.
(AJ)Was shield or spear to be seen
among forty thousand in Israel?
My heart goes out to the commanders of Israel
who (AK)offered themselves willingly among the people.
Bless the Lord.

10 “Tell of it, (AL)you who ride on white donkeys,
you who sit on rich carpets[b]
and you who walk by the way.
11 To the sound of musicians[c] at the watering places,
there they repeat the righteous triumphs of the Lord,
the righteous triumphs of his villagers in Israel.

“Then down to the gates marched the people of the Lord.

12 (AM)“Awake, awake, Deborah!
Awake, awake, break out in a song!
Arise, Barak, (AN)lead away your captives,
O son of Abinoam.
13 Then down marched the remnant of the noble;
the people of the Lord marched down for me against the mighty.
14 From (AO)Ephraim their root (AP)they marched down into the valley,[d]
following you, Benjamin, with your kinsmen;
from (AQ)Machir marched down the commanders,
and from Zebulun those who bear the lieutenant's[e] staff;
15 the princes of Issachar came with Deborah,
and Issachar faithful to (AR)Barak;
into the valley they rushed at his heels.
Among the clans of Reuben
there were great searchings of heart.
16 Why did you sit still (AS)among the sheepfolds,
to hear the whistling for the flocks?
Among the clans of Reuben
there were great searchings of heart.
17 (AT)Gilead stayed beyond the Jordan;
(AU)and Dan, why did he stay with the ships?
(AV)Asher sat still (AW)at the coast of the sea,
staying by his landings.
18 (AX)Zebulun is a people who risked their lives to the death;
(AY)Naphtali, too, on the heights of the field.

19 “The kings came, they fought;
then fought the kings of Canaan,
at (AZ)Taanach, by the waters of (BA)Megiddo;
(BB)they got no spoils of silver.
20 (BC)From heaven the stars fought,
from their courses they fought against Sisera.
21 (BD)The torrent Kishon swept them away,
the ancient torrent, the torrent Kishon.
March on, my soul, with might!

22 “Then loud beat the horses' hoofs
with the galloping, galloping of his steeds.

23 “Curse Meroz, says the angel of the Lord,
curse its inhabitants thoroughly,
(BE)because they did not come to the help of the Lord,
to the help of the Lord against the mighty.

24 “Most blessed of women be (BF)Jael,
the wife of Heber the Kenite,
of tent-dwelling women most blessed.
25 (BG)He asked for water and she gave him milk;
she brought him curds in a noble's bowl.
26 (BH)She sent her hand to the tent peg
and her right hand to the workmen's mallet;
she struck Sisera;
she crushed his head;
she shattered and pierced his temple.
27 Between her feet
he sank, he fell, he lay still;
between her feet
he sank, he fell;
where he sank,
there he fell—dead.

28 (BI)“Out of the window she peered,
the mother of Sisera wailed through (BJ)the lattice:
‘Why is his chariot so long in coming?
Why tarry the hoofbeats of his chariots?’
29 Her wisest princesses answer,
indeed, she answers herself,
30 ‘Have they not found and (BK)divided the spoil?—
A womb or two for every man;
spoil of dyed materials for Sisera,
spoil of dyed materials embroidered,
two pieces of dyed work embroidered for the neck as spoil?’

31 (BL)“So may all your enemies perish, O Lord!
But your friends be (BM)like the sun (BN)as he rises in his might.”

(BO)And the land had rest for forty years.

Luke 22:35-53

Scripture Must Be Fulfilled in Jesus

35 And he said to them, (A)“When I sent you out with no moneybag or knapsack or sandals, did you lack anything?” They said, “Nothing.” 36 He said to them, “But now let the one who has a moneybag take it, and likewise a knapsack. And let the one who has no sword sell his cloak and buy one. 37 For I tell you that (B)this Scripture must be fulfilled in me: (C)‘And he was numbered with the transgressors.’ For (D)what is written about me has its fulfillment.” 38 And they said, “Look, Lord, here are two (E)swords.” And he said to them, (F)“It is enough.”

Jesus Prays on the Mount of Olives

39 (G)And he came out and went, (H)as was his custom, to (I)the Mount of Olives, and the disciples followed him. 40 (J)And when he came to (K)the place, he said to them, (L)“Pray that you may not (M)enter into temptation.” 41 And he withdrew from them about a stone's throw, and (N)knelt down and prayed, 42 saying, (O)“Father, if you are willing, remove (P)this cup from me. (Q)Nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done.” 43 And there appeared to him (R)an angel from heaven, strengthening him. 44 And (S)being in agony he prayed more earnestly; and his sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground.[a] 45 And when he rose from prayer, he came to the disciples and found them sleeping for sorrow, 46 and he said to them, “Why are you sleeping? Rise and (T)pray that you may not enter into temptation.”

Betrayal and Arrest of Jesus

47 (U)While he was still speaking, there came a crowd, and the man called (V)Judas, one of the twelve, was leading them. He drew near to Jesus to kiss him, 48 but Jesus said to him, “Judas, would you betray the Son of Man with a kiss?” 49 And when those who were around him saw what would follow, they said, “Lord, shall we strike (W)with the sword?” 50 And one of them struck the servant[b] of the high priest and cut off his right ear. 51 But Jesus said, “No more of this!” And he touched his ear and healed him. 52 Then Jesus said to the chief priests and (X)officers of the temple and elders, who had come out against him, “Have you come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs? 53 When (Y)I was with you day after day in the temple, you did not lay hands on me. But this is (Z)your hour, and (AA)the power of darkness.”

Psalm 94

The Lord Will Not Forsake His People

94 O Lord, God of (A)vengeance,
O God of vengeance, (B)shine forth!
(C)Rise up, O (D)judge of the earth;
repay to the (E)proud what they deserve!
O Lord, (F)how long shall the wicked,
how long shall (G)the wicked exult?
They pour out their (H)arrogant words;
all (I)the evildoers boast.
They (J)crush your people, O Lord,
and afflict your heritage.
They kill (K)the widow and the sojourner,
and murder (L)the fatherless;
(M)and they say, “The Lord does not see;
the God of Jacob does not perceive.”

(N)Understand, O dullest of the people!
Fools, when will you be wise?
(O)He who planted the ear, does he not hear?
He who formed the eye, does he not see?
10 He who (P)disciplines the nations, does he not rebuke?
He who (Q)teaches man knowledge—
11 (R)the Lord—knows the thoughts of man,
that they are (S)but a breath.[a]

12 (T)Blessed is the man whom you (U)discipline, O Lord,
and whom you teach out of your law,
13 to give him (V)rest from (W)days of trouble,
until (X)a pit is dug for the wicked.
14 (Y)For the Lord will not forsake his (Z)people;
he will not abandon his (AA)heritage;
15 for (AB)justice will return to the righteous,
and all the upright in heart will (AC)follow it.

16 (AD)Who rises up for me against the wicked?
Who stands up for me against evildoers?
17 (AE)If the Lord had not been my help,
my soul would soon have lived in the land of (AF)silence.
18 When I thought, (AG)“My foot slips,”
your steadfast love, O Lord, (AH)held me up.
19 When the cares of my heart are many,
your consolations cheer my soul.
20 Can (AI)wicked rulers be allied with you,
those who frame[b] injustice by (AJ)statute?
21 They (AK)band together against the life of the righteous
and condemn (AL)the innocent to death.[c]
22 But the Lord has become my (AM)stronghold,
and my God (AN)the rock of my (AO)refuge.
23 He will bring back on them (AP)their iniquity
and (AQ)wipe them out for their wickedness;
the Lord our God will wipe them out.

Proverbs 14:3-4

By the mouth of a fool comes (A)a rod for his back,[a]
(B)but the lips of the wise will preserve them.
Where there are no oxen, the manger is clean,
but abundant crops come by the strength of the ox.

Judges 2:10-3:31, Luke 22:14-34, Psalms 92:1-93:5, Proverbs 14:1-2

Today is the 24th day of April. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I am Brian. It’s great to be here with you today It’s hump day and the back half of this week is a busy one for me. My daughter, our daughter, my wife Jill and my daughter, the leader of the Daily Audio Bible Chronological channel, she’ll be getting married on Saturday. So, busy, busy, busy for us the next couple of days. Thank you for your prayers. But it doesn’t matter how busy life may get, the Scriptures are a part of that rhythm no matter where we are, no matter what we do, we are in this together around this global campfire. Yeah, there’s all kinds of things come up inside of the year that can pull us in all kinds of directions but if the word of God stays central and as a part of that rhythm…ahhh…the drama it can save us from…I mean we can’t eliminate all drama from our lives, but we can eliminate a lot. And, so, even though it’s a busy second half of the week for us around here, the word of God is the rhythm of our lives. And, so, let’s step into today’s reading. We began the book of Judges yesterday and we’ll be traveling along and learning of the generations of judges as we go forward for the next little bit here. We’re reading from the English Standard Version. Did I already say that? Judges chapter 2 verse 10 through 3 verse 31 today.

Commentary:

Okay. So, as we launched ourselves fully into the book of Judges and started meeting some of the judges we should be able to see pretty clearly the seesaw pattern - falling away and repentance - and this will color most of the story of the ancient Hebrew people as we go forward. So, even as we met a couple of the…well…three of the judges today – Othniel, Ehud, and Shamgar, we can also see how the culture was shifting away from what had been ingrained into them and that is alter dependence on God. And this began to shift and mingle and become more about the will and wishes of the people, which is spoken of in our reading from the book of Proverbs today. “Whoever walks in uprightness fears the Lord, but he who is devious in his ways despises him.”

And then we get into the gospel of Luke and we have just come through the Easter season, I mean, we are just a few days removed from Easter and we are entering the story that situates itself at Easter. So, we are at the Passover meal, the last supper. And we’ve talked about this as we followed with Jesus back through Jericho and walking up to Jerusalem and weeping over Jerusalem. We’ve talked about the weight that must’ve been on Jesus shoulders as we’re taking this path. And, so, Jesus is sitting down to this final meal and what is he gonna face? Like, does He get to have just a peaceful last meal? He does, as long as being betrayed to your enemies and some of your friends fighting each other over who was the greatest in the kingdom of God, as long as those kinds of things don’t bother you, then yeah, I suppose it’s a peaceful meal. So, in spite of all of that drama, Jesus institutes what we know as the Eucharist or communion. And we know from other Gospels that it…that Jesus also took off his robe, wrapped a towel around His waist, and washed the filthy feet of His friends. Whether they were betraying Him or whether they were fighting each other for position or whether they were silent, whatever was going on He washed their feet. And remember Peter saying, “you’re not gonna wash my feet”. And Jesus is like, “if I’m not gonna wash your feet then you don’t have a place with Me.” So, Jesus is essentially, with His final lesson before He goes to be tortured to death, trying to show his friends the only way is to serve, the only way is to humble yourself. Or in the words of Jesus, quoting from the gospel of Luke from our reading today, “the kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them and those in authority over them are called benefactors, but not so with you. Rather, let the greatest among you become as the youngest and the leader as one who serves. For who is the greater? One who reclines at table or one who serves? Is it not the one who reclines at table? But I am among you as the one who serves.” The discouraging part of this scene is that Jesus friends could be battling each other for who’s the greatest in the kingdom having walked with Jesus and seen His ministry firsthand, first person. They still don’t completely get it. What’s discouraging about that is just how hard it is to get it. It is contrary to the world system of self-promotion and bigger and bigger and bigger and more and more and more. And yet, we’ve probably lived long enough to kind of realized that we can chase whatever we want to chase but even we’ve been chasing something and finally acquire that thing, it’s not all that it seemed. It didn’t bring the eternal life we were hoping, right? It didn’t bring the perfection that the commercial seemed to tell us it was going to. The times that we find ourselves most alive are when we’ve given something somebody needs, whether that’s in thought, word, or deed, when we’ve been able to be used by God, when we’ve been able to say the right thing at the right time or do the right thing for someone at the right time. When we’re serving one another, we walk away from that full. Whereas, we can go to the mall and spend all of our money and come home and be more empty than anything. And Jesus’ simply showing us and we’re still not getting it. Like it’s right in front of us and we’re still not getting. Jesus’s isn’t commanding us to be poor. He’s not commanding us is to do anything but be aware, that if we’re going to be like Him then we’re going have to lower ourselves and be servants to our brothers and sisters in whatever way that we can. This is the model, right? So, this is God who has incarnated himself, who has lowered Himself down to our level to then demonstrate what a life abundant can look like. And it can’t be found in the accumulation of wealth or stuff. Those things can certainly by us pleasures, but they burn off so fast. Like, you don’t end up feeling full until we’re giving of ourselves. I mean…I mean…if that became the rhythm of our lives, that we woke up in the morning not to feel like we are in bondage and…oh another day I gotta serve people…but rather to know that I get to reveal God’s kingdom today by keeping myself humble like my Savior and not just jumping into a reactionary day but looking at the whole picture and responding accordingly, seeing through the eyes of the Spirit, what is happening and how I can reveal God’s kingdom in it. I get to do that today and every day. As opposed to, I get to yell at my children and kick the dog and insult my spouse. When you start serving people it changes the atmosphere. When you have a humble posture ready to help, ready to serve and you come to the aid of someone unexpectedly in whatever way, maybe helping somebody at the office with something they’re stuck on. Maybe helping somebody on the side of the…I mean…whatever. There’s millions of ways to contextualize this. It can happen every day…like…we don’t even have to look for these opportunities. They present themselves in one way or another. And all Jesus is doing here is showing us the secret of how to live. And, so, may we take this scene and apply it to our own lives and live into it today and every day.

Prayer:

Holy Spirit we invite You into that. It’s so subtle how quickly pride and arrogance and competition and false identity present themselves. It’s everywhere, almost impossible to escape, no possible way for us to orient ourselves rightly without walking with You without Your Holy Spirit indwelling us and leading us forward. And our part in that collaboration is to listen, is to slow down and find the spacious life that You are offering us to slow down and live a life that we can maintain because the truth of the matter is that most of us are too busy to even pay attention to this. Come Holy Spirit, show us how to slow down, show us how to listen the You, and show us how to serve our brothers and sisters in whatever it is they may need. Maybe it’s a word of encouragement that they need. Maybe it’s a random smile to a stranger we will never see again that they need. Whatever it is that they need, You have allowed us to reveal Your kingdom today. Help us to do that. We ask in the name of Jesus. Amen.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Hi, this is Rebecca, To Buy His Wings from Virginia. I heard Johnny’s prayer request. He’s a middle school student who called in for Nick. Johnny, your request touched my heart so much I cried. And I’m a __ __ the Army so I don’t cry often. I am praying for you. I am praying for Nick, for favor in the court system, and any home Nick is placed in will be a good, great home for him. Rebecca from Michigan, I’m praying for you. I love hearing your phone calls and your requests and your stories. I advise that you get another dog if your place allows you to get a pet. I come home to my dog every day and he shows me unconditional love. So, it reminds me of how I should come seek and love the Lord with everything I have. I have two prayer requests. Please pray for my dad Juan. He is not saved. He’s in his mid-70s and is in poor health. Also pray for my mom, her name is Regina. She is 71 years old and she’s an alcoholic. Pray for restoration that she would stop drinking. She has been alcoholic since my earliest memory of her when I was about four years old. Brian, Jill, Hardin family, for all those in the Daily Audio Bible, God bless you bless this ministry. You guys have blessed me immensely and I want to thank you for being the hands and feet of Jesus every day. I hope China’s wedding is wonderful, is blessed, is protected and is everything she and her husband wants it to be. God bless you all.

Hi this is Bart from Kentucky. Heavenly Lord we thank You for the day. Thank You for Your loving and saving grace through Jesus Christ. It’s the day before Easter we celebrate the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. Lord today I want to lift up Nicholas, son of Your son and our brother Duyne from Wisconsin who faithfully prays for children. We ask You to guide Nicholas steps as he gets out of jail. Show him the right ways to walk and give him Your wisdom. Lord we pray this in the name of Jesus Christ and we also pray this for the rest of our children, be they prodigal or not. As Duane reminds us, You are the same God that saved us and can save our children. I ask these things in Jesus’ name and I pray expectantly. His victory is at hand. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

Hello this is Jennifer in Indiana. I’m calling for my dad and his girlfriend. She went in for a biopsy last week. She’s been feeling ill for about a month and they said she has late stage cancer and they’re putting her on hospice. So, she doesn’t know the Lord and my dad believes in God, but he doesn’t believe in Jesus, and he is just crushed. He was talking about marriage two months ago wanting to propose to her. So, please pray for my dad Bill and his girlfriend Marion. And I’m going to see him now. Just lift them up family and pray that God’s will be done in this situation. Thank you.

Like Satan I was stubborn and I had to be the best
hard driving inpatient a cut above the rest
insensitive self-reliant and chronically independent
I even tried to compete with God was a crazy or just demented
demented now that’s the perfect word
it has that demonic sound
and demons did control my life they ran be in the ground
it had to be poor self-esteem that may be so independent
independence made me critical egotistical and in many ways a cynic
being critical and egotistical has led to isolation
isolation led me into sin and lots of aggravation
once you’re deep within the sin you’re far away from God
and once again poor self-esteem will make you feel odd
the cycle just repeats itself you feel you just can’t win
unless some way you can get to God and make the cycle end
now how does one get back to God
there are lots of different theories
I guess that’s why a lot of give up
their spirit often varies
especially if their spirit isn’t one from the Lord
Satan tries to make it hard for us to get restored
but really its quite simple accept and just agree
deliverance is a gift by friend that’s absolutely free
you can learn to be dependent God will always bring you through
stay humble and compassionate because love will help you too
and as your faith and walk get stronger you’ll become Gods son
the cycle will be broken and your battle can be won
but there’ll be other battles and other victories too
but remember to stay close to God your strength he will renew

Judges 2:10-3:31

10 And all that generation also were gathered to their fathers. And there arose another generation after them who did not know the Lord or the work that he had done for Israel.

Israel's Unfaithfulness

11 (A)And the people of Israel did what was evil in the sight of the Lord and served the Baals. 12 (B)And they abandoned the Lord, the God of their fathers, who had brought them out of the land of Egypt. (C)They went after other gods, from among the gods of the peoples who were around them, and (D)bowed down to them. (E)And they provoked the Lord to anger. 13 They abandoned the Lord (F)and served the Baals and the Ashtaroth. 14 (G)So the anger of the Lord was kindled against Israel, and he (H)gave them over to plunderers, who plundered them. (I)And he sold them into the hand of their surrounding enemies, (J)so that they could no longer withstand their enemies. 15 Whenever they marched out, the hand of the Lord was against them for harm, as the Lord had warned, (K)and as the Lord had sworn to them. And they were in terrible distress.

The Lord Raises Up Judges

16 (L)Then the Lord raised up judges, (M)who saved them out of the hand of those who plundered them. 17 Yet they did not listen to their judges, for (N)they whored after other gods and bowed down to them. (O)They soon turned aside from the way in which their fathers had walked, who had obeyed the commandments of the Lord, and they did not do so. 18 Whenever the Lord raised up judges for them, (P)the Lord was with the judge, and he saved them from the hand of their enemies all the days of the judge. (Q)For the Lord was moved to pity by (R)their groaning because of those who afflicted and oppressed them. 19 But (S)whenever the judge died, they turned back and were more corrupt than their fathers, going after other gods, serving them and bowing down to them. They did not drop any of their practices or their stubborn ways. 20 (T)So the anger of the Lord was kindled against Israel, and he said, “Because this people (U)have transgressed my covenant that I commanded their fathers and have not obeyed my voice, 21 (V)I will no longer drive out before them any of the nations that Joshua left when he died, 22 in order (W)to test Israel by them, whether they will take care to walk in the way of the Lord as their fathers did, or not.” 23 So the Lord left those nations, not driving them out quickly, and he did not give them into the hand of Joshua.

(X)Now these are the nations that the Lord left, to test Israel by them, that is, all in Israel who had not experienced all the wars in Canaan. It was only in order that the generations of the people of Israel might know war, to teach war to those who had not known it before. These are the nations: (Y)the five lords of the Philistines and all the Canaanites and the Sidonians and the Hivites who lived on Mount Lebanon, from Mount Baal-hermon as far as Lebo-hamath. They were for (Z)the testing of Israel, to know whether Israel would obey the commandments of the Lord, which he commanded their fathers by the hand of Moses. So the people of Israel lived (AA)among the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites. (AB)And their daughters they took to themselves for wives, and their own daughters they gave to their sons, and they served their gods.

Othniel

(AC)And the people of Israel did what was evil in the sight of the Lord. They forgot the Lord their God and served the Baals and (AD)the Asheroth. Therefore the anger of the Lord was kindled against Israel, (AE)and he sold them into the hand of (AF)Cushan-rishathaim king of Mesopotamia. And the people of Israel served Cushan-rishathaim eight years. But when the people of Israel (AG)cried out to the Lord, the Lord raised up a (AH)deliverer for the people of Israel, who saved them, (AI)Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother. 10 (AJ)The Spirit of the Lord was upon him, and he judged Israel. He went out to war, and the Lord gave Cushan-rishathaim king of Mesopotamia into his hand. And his hand prevailed over Cushan-rishathaim. 11 (AK)So the land had rest forty years. Then Othniel the son of Kenaz died.

Ehud

12 (AL)And the people of Israel again did what was evil in the sight of the Lord, and the Lord strengthened Eglon (AM)the king of Moab against Israel, because they had done what was evil in the sight of the Lord. 13 He gathered to himself the Ammonites and the (AN)Amalekites, and went and defeated Israel. And they took possession of (AO)the city of palms. 14 And the people of Israel served Eglon the king of Moab eighteen years.

15 Then the people of Israel (AP)cried out to the Lord, and the Lord raised up for them (AQ)a deliverer, Ehud, the son of Gera, the Benjaminite, (AR)a left-handed man. The people of Israel sent tribute by him to Eglon the king of Moab. 16 And Ehud made for himself a sword with two edges, a cubit[a] in length, and he bound it on his right thigh under his clothes. 17 And he presented the tribute to Eglon king of Moab. Now Eglon was a very fat man. 18 And when Ehud had finished presenting the tribute, he sent away the people who carried the tribute. 19 But he himself turned back (AS)at the idols near Gilgal and said, “I have a secret message for you, O king.” And he commanded, “Silence.” And all his attendants went out from his presence. 20 And Ehud came to him as he was sitting alone in his (AT)cool roof chamber. (AU)And Ehud said, “I have a message from God for you.” And he arose from his seat. 21 And Ehud reached with his left hand, took the sword from his right thigh, and thrust it into his belly. 22 And the hilt also went in after the blade, and the fat closed over the blade, for he did not pull the sword out of his belly; and the dung came out. 23 Then Ehud went out into the porch[b] and closed the doors of the roof chamber behind him (AV)and locked them.

24 When he had gone, the servants came, and when they saw that the doors of the roof chamber were locked, they thought, (AW)“Surely he is relieving himself in the closet of the cool chamber.” 25 And they waited till they were embarrassed. But when he still did not open the doors of the roof chamber, they took the key and opened them, and there lay their lord dead on the floor.

26 Ehud escaped while they delayed, and he passed beyond (AX)the idols and escaped to Seirah. 27 When he arrived, (AY)he sounded the trumpet in (AZ)the hill country of Ephraim. Then the people of Israel went down with him from the hill country, and he was their leader. 28 And he said to them, “Follow after me, (BA)for the Lord has given your enemies the Moabites into your hand.” So they went down after him and seized (BB)the fords of the Jordan against the Moabites and did not allow anyone to pass over. 29 And they killed at that time about 10,000 of the Moabites, all strong, able-bodied men; not a man escaped. 30 So Moab was subdued that day under the hand of Israel. (BC)And the land had rest for eighty years.

Shamgar

31 After him was (BD)Shamgar the son of Anath, who killed 600 of the Philistines (BE)with an oxgoad, and he also (BF)saved Israel.

Luke 22:14-34

Institution of the Lord's Supper

14 (A)And when the hour came, he reclined at table, and the apostles with him. 15 And he said to them, “I have earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. 16 For I tell you I will not eat it[a] (B)until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.” 17 And he took a cup, and (C)when he had given thanks he said, “Take this, and divide it among yourselves. 18 (D)For I tell you that from now on I will not drink of the fruit of the vine (E)until the kingdom of God comes.” 19 (F)And he took bread, and (G)when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying, (H)“This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” 20 And likewise the cup after they had eaten, saying, (I)“This cup that is poured out for you is (J)the new (K)covenant in my blood.[b] 21 (L)But behold, the hand of him who betrays me is (M)with me on the table. 22 For the Son of Man goes (N)as it has been determined, but woe to that man by whom he is betrayed!” 23 And they began to question one another, which of them it could be who was going to do this.

Who Is the Greatest?

24 (O)A dispute also arose among them, as to which of them was to be regarded as the greatest. 25 (P)And he said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles (Q)exercise lordship over them, and those in authority over them are called benefactors. 26 (R)But not so with you. Rather, let (S)the greatest among you become as the youngest, and the leader as one who serves. 27 For who is the greater, (T)one who reclines at table or one who serves? Is it not the one who reclines at table? But (U)I am among you as the one who serves.

28 “You are those who have stayed with me (V)in my trials, 29 and (W)I assign to you, as my Father assigned to me, a kingdom, 30 (X)that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom and (Y)sit on thrones judging (Z)the twelve tribes of Israel.

Jesus Foretells Peter's Denial

31 “Simon, Simon, behold, (AA)Satan demanded to have you,[c] (AB)that he might sift you like wheat, 32 but (AC)I have prayed for you that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned again, (AD)strengthen your brothers.” 33 Peter[d] said to him, “Lord, I am ready to go with you both (AE)to prison and (AF)to death.” 34 (AG)Jesus[e] said, “I tell you, Peter, the rooster will not crow this day, until you deny three times that you know me.”

Psalm 92-93

How Great Are Your Works

A Psalm. A Song for the Sabbath.

92 (A)It is good to give thanks to the Lord,
to sing praises to your name, (B)O Most High;
to declare your (C)steadfast love in (D)the morning,
and your (E)faithfulness by (F)night,
to the music of (G)the lute and (H)the harp,
to the melody of (I)the lyre.
For you, O Lord, have made me glad by your (J)work;
at (K)the works of your hands I sing for joy.

How (L)great are your works, O Lord!
Your (M)thoughts are very (N)deep!
The stupid man cannot know;
the fool cannot understand this:
that though (O)the wicked sprout like grass
and all (P)evildoers flourish,
they are doomed to destruction forever;
but you, O Lord, are (Q)on high forever.
For behold, your enemies, O Lord,
for behold, your enemies shall perish;
all evildoers shall be (R)scattered.

10 But you have exalted my (S)horn like that of (T)the wild ox;
you have (U)poured over me[a] fresh oil.
11 My (V)eyes have seen the downfall of my enemies;
my ears have heard the doom of my evil assailants.

12 (W)The righteous flourish like the palm tree
and grow like a cedar in Lebanon.
13 They are planted in the house of the Lord;
they flourish in (X)the courts of our God.
14 They still bear fruit in old age;
they are ever full of sap and green,
15 (Y)to declare that the Lord is upright;
he is my (Z)rock, and there is (AA)no unrighteousness in him.

The Lord Reigns

93 (AB)The Lord reigns; he is (AC)robed in majesty;
the Lord is (AD)robed; he has (AE)put on strength as his belt.
(AF)Yes, the world is established; (AG)it shall never be moved.
(AH)Your throne is established from of old;
(AI)you are from everlasting.

(AJ)The floods have lifted up, O Lord,
the floods have lifted up their voice;
the floods lift up their roaring.
Mightier than the thunders of many waters,
mightier than the waves of the sea,
(AK)the Lord (AL)on high is mighty!

Your (AM)decrees are very trustworthy;
(AN)holiness befits your house,
O Lord, forevermore.

Judges 1:1-2:9, Luke 21:29-22:13, Psalms 90:1-91:16, Proverbs 13:24-25

Today is the 23rd day of April. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I am Brian. It is always, every day, a pleasure to be here with you around the global campfire taking the next step forward as we continue our journey through the Scriptures. And we finished the book of Joshua yesterday, which brings us to the book of Judges, which is what comes next after Joshua, but it’s very different than either Joshua or Moses leadership.

Introduction to the book of Judges:

The book of Judges will lead us all the way to the times of the kings of the monarchy and that’s where we’ll be by the time we finish Judges. So, this book, Judges, traditionally was authored by the prophet Samuel. Many modern scholars don’t really feel that he could have been the sole author of the book. They believe that many sources were drawn together because the book of Judges covers many generations with Samuel being the final judge. So, it makes sense that he would be involved in recounting Judges. And it’s a good time to point out that Judges isn't…like…it’s mission isn’t to talk about judgments, it’s not the book of judgment, it’s the book of Judges and the Judges were the people who were the leaders after Joshua. And, so, we’ll find that the time after Joshua, during the time of the judges, is a bit more somber than in the time of Joshua with all the drama and conquest. Judges is what comes next and we’re about to watch the children of Israel as they fall away and walk away from their covenantal relationship with God and suffer some of the consequences of that back-and-forth that becomes their story. So, in this book we will encounter 13 judges that led the children of Israel after Joshua. They didn’t have a king yet, as we’ve mentioned. And, so, they were the rulers. And the culminating story in the book of Judges illustrates how one thing builds on another, every decision bearing weight on a greater outcome and how little subtle decisions by seemingly unrelated and relatively unimportant people ended up bringing on the terrible annihilation of an entire tribe of Israel. So, the book of Judges was probably written somewhere around 1000 BC. So, it’s obviously several thousand years ago, but ironically, we shouldn’t have much of a problem finding ourselves in this book. It will resonate with all of our stories. We’ve all had the back-and-forth in our relationship with God. We’ve all been able to experience the joy of intimacy with God but some of the repercussions of allowing that relationship to falter and us willingly walk away from it. And at the same time, God doesn’t ever not have His arms outstretched toward us asking us to come home. His words are never not return to me, come back. And, so, with that we begin. We’re reading from the English Standard version this week. Judges chapter 1 verse 1 through 2 verse 9.

Prayer:

Father, we thank You for Your word, we thank You that as we continue through this week and moving our way day by day towards another month that You have been faithful to us every day and You have spoken to us in many deep ways and You are transforming us from within, from the inside outward and we thank You for that. And as we move into the book of Judges and we begin to see what comes next we ask, Holy Spirit, that You begin to help us see ourselves in these stories because we’ve watched the generations rise up and finally be able to go into the promised land and we will certainly see how the cultures all around them do in fact become a snare to them and what happens next. And, so, Father, You have brought us on this path and we have seen much. We don’t want to go on that path anymore, the path that will lead us away from You, and we’ll see us walking away from You even as You’re standing there with Your arms out saying, “don’t do this.” We have done that many times. And, so, now as we enter into this territory in the Bible where we can see this happening to a whole people we ask that You make our own story clear to us. Come Holy Spirit we pray. In Jesus’ name we ask. Amen.

Judges 1:1-2:9

The Continuing Conquest of Canaan

After the death of Joshua, the people of Israel (A)inquired of the Lord, (B)“Who shall go up first for us against the Canaanites, to fight against them?” The Lord said, “Judah shall go up; behold, I have given the land into his hand.” And Judah said to Simeon his brother, “Come up with me into the territory allotted to me, that we may fight against the Canaanites. (C)And I likewise will go with you into the territory allotted to you.” So Simeon went with him. Then Judah went up and the Lord gave the Canaanites and the Perizzites into their hand, and they defeated 10,000 of them at Bezek. They found Adoni-bezek at Bezek and fought against him and defeated the Canaanites and the Perizzites. Adoni-bezek fled, but they pursued him and caught him and cut off his thumbs and his big toes. And Adoni-bezek said, “Seventy kings with their thumbs and their big toes cut off (D)used to pick up scraps under my table. (E)As I have done, so God has repaid me.” And they brought him to Jerusalem, and he died there.

(F)And the men of Judah fought against Jerusalem and captured it and struck it with the edge of the sword and set the city on fire. And afterward the men of Judah went down to fight against the Canaanites who lived in (G)the hill country, in the Negeb, and in (H)the lowland. 10 (I)And Judah went against the Canaanites who lived in Hebron (J)(now the name of Hebron was formerly Kiriath-arba), and they defeated (K)Sheshai and Ahiman and Talmai.

11 From there they went against the inhabitants of Debir. The name of Debir was formerly Kiriath-sepher. 12 And Caleb said, “He who attacks Kiriath-sepher and captures it, I will give him Achsah my daughter for a wife.” 13 And Othniel the son of Kenaz, (L)Caleb's younger brother, captured it. And he gave him Achsah his daughter for a wife. 14 When she came to him, she urged him to ask her father for a field. And she dismounted from her donkey, and Caleb said to her, “What do you want?” 15 She said to him, “Give me a blessing. Since you have set me in the land of the Negeb, give me also springs of water.” And Caleb gave her the upper springs and the lower springs.

16 And the descendants of the (M)Kenite, Moses' father-in-law, went up with the people of Judah (N)from the city of palms into the wilderness of Judah, which lies in the Negeb near (O)Arad, (P)and they went and settled with the people. 17 (Q)And Judah went with Simeon his brother, and they defeated the Canaanites who inhabited Zephath and devoted it to destruction. So the name of the city was called (R)Hormah.[a] 18 Judah also (S)captured Gaza with its territory, and Ashkelon with its territory, and Ekron with its territory. 19 (T)And the Lord was with Judah, and he took possession of the (U)hill country, but he could not drive out the inhabitants of the plain because they had (V)chariots of iron. 20 (W)And Hebron was given to Caleb, as Moses had said. And he drove out from it (X)the three sons of Anak. 21 But the people of Benjamin did not drive out the Jebusites who lived in Jerusalem, (Y)so the Jebusites have lived with the people of Benjamin in Jerusalem to this day.

22 The house of Joseph also went up against Bethel, (Z)and the Lord was with them. 23 And the house of Joseph scouted out Bethel. ((AA)Now the name of the city was formerly Luz.) 24 And the spies saw a man coming out of the city, and they said to him, “Please show us the way into the city, (AB)and we will deal kindly with you.” 25 And he showed them the way into the city. And they struck the city with the edge of the sword, but they let the man and all his family go. 26 And the man went to (AC)the land of the Hittites and built a city and called its name Luz. That is its name to this day.

Failure to Complete the Conquest

27 (AD)Manasseh did not drive out the inhabitants of Beth-shean and its villages, or Taanach and its villages, or the inhabitants of Dor and its villages, or the inhabitants of Ibleam and its villages, or the inhabitants of Megiddo and its villages, for the Canaanites persisted in dwelling in that land. 28 When Israel grew strong, they put the Canaanites to forced labor, but did not drive them out completely.

29 (AE)And Ephraim did not drive out the Canaanites who lived in Gezer, so the Canaanites lived in Gezer among them.

30 Zebulun did not drive out the inhabitants of Kitron, or the inhabitants of (AF)Nahalol, so the Canaanites lived among them, but became subject to forced labor.

31 (AG)Asher did not drive out the inhabitants of Acco, or the inhabitants of Sidon or of Ahlab or of Achzib or of Helbah or of Aphik or of Rehob, 32 so the Asherites lived among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land, for they did not drive them out.

33 Naphtali did not drive out the inhabitants of (AH)Beth-shemesh, or the inhabitants of Beth-anath, so they lived among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land. Nevertheless, the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh and of Beth-anath became subject to forced labor for them.

34 (AI)The Amorites pressed the people of Dan back into the hill country, for they did not allow them to come down to the plain. 35 The Amorites persisted in dwelling in Mount Heres, (AJ)in Aijalon, and in Shaalbim, but the hand of the house of Joseph rested heavily on them, and they became subject to forced labor. 36 And the border of the Amorites ran from (AK)the ascent of Akrabbim, from Sela and upward.

Israel's Disobedience

Now the angel of the Lord went up from Gilgal to (AL)Bochim. And he said, “I brought you up from Egypt and brought you into the land that I swore to give to your fathers. I said, (AM)‘I will never break my covenant with you, (AN)and you shall make no covenant with the inhabitants of this land; (AO)you shall break down their altars.’ But you have not obeyed my voice. What is this you have done? So now I say, (AP)I will not drive them out before you, but they shall become (AQ)thorns in your sides, and their gods shall be a snare to you.” As soon as the angel of the Lord spoke these words to all the people of Israel, the people lifted up their voices and wept. And they called the name of that place Bochim.[b] And they sacrificed there to the Lord.

The Death of Joshua

When Joshua dismissed the people, the people of Israel went each to his inheritance to take possession of the land. (AR)And the people served the Lord all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders who outlived Joshua, who had seen all the great work that the Lord had done for Israel. And Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of the Lord, died at the age of 110 years. And they buried him within the boundaries of (AS)his inheritance in Timnath-heres, (AT)in the hill country of Ephraim, north of the mountain of Gaash.

Luke 21:29-22:13

The Lesson of the Fig Tree

29 And he told them a parable: “Look at the fig tree, and all the trees. 30 As soon as they come out in leaf, you see (A)for yourselves and know that the summer is already near. 31 So also, when you see these things taking place, you know that the kingdom of God is near. 32 (B)Truly, I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all has taken place. 33 (C)Heaven and earth will pass away, but (D)my words will not pass away.

Watch Yourselves

34 “But watch yourselves (E)lest (F)your hearts be weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and (G)cares of this life, and (H)that day come upon you suddenly (I)like a trap. 35 For it will come upon all who dwell on the face of the whole earth. 36 But (J)stay awake at all times, (K)praying that you may (L)have strength to escape all these things that are going to take place, and (M)to stand before the Son of Man.”

37 And (N)every day he was teaching in the temple, but (O)at night he went out and lodged on (P)the mount called Olivet. 38 And early in the morning (Q)all the people came to him in the temple to hear him.

The Plot to Kill Jesus

22 (R)Now the Feast of Unleavened Bread drew near, which is called (S)the Passover. And the chief priests and the scribes (T)were seeking how to put him to death, for they feared the people.

Judas to Betray Jesus

(U)Then (V)Satan entered into (W)Judas called Iscariot, who was of the number of the twelve. He went away and conferred with the chief priests and (X)officers how he might betray him to them. And they were glad, and agreed to give him money. So he consented and sought an opportunity to (Y)betray him to them in the absence of a crowd.

The Passover with the Disciples

(Z)Then came (AA)the day of Unleavened Bread, on which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed. So Jesus[a] sent Peter and John, saying, “Go and prepare the Passover for us, that we may eat it.” They said to him, “Where will you have us prepare it?” 10 He said to them, “Behold, when you have entered the city, a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him into the house that he enters 11 and tell the master of the house, (AB)‘The Teacher says to you, Where is (AC)the guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?’ 12 And he will show you (AD)a large upper room furnished; prepare it there.” 13 And they went and found it (AE)just as he had told them, and they prepared the Passover.

Psalm 90-91

Book Four

From Everlasting to Everlasting

A (A)Prayer of Moses, the (B)man of God.

90 Lord, you have been our (C)dwelling place[a]
in all generations.
(D)Before the (E)mountains were brought forth,
or ever you had formed the earth and the world,
(F)from everlasting to everlasting you are God.

You return man to dust
and say, (G)“Return, (H)O children of man!”[b]
For (I)a thousand years in your sight
are but as (J)yesterday when it is past,
or as (K)a watch in the night.

You (L)sweep them away as with a flood; they are like (M)a dream,
like (N)grass that is renewed in the morning:
in (O)the morning it flourishes and is renewed;
in the evening it (P)fades and (Q)withers.

For we are brought to an end by your anger;
by your wrath we are dismayed.
You have (R)set our iniquities before you,
our (S)secret sins in the light of your presence.

For all our days pass away under your wrath;
we bring our years to an end like a sigh.
10 The years of our life are seventy,
or even by reason of strength eighty;
yet their span[c] is but toil and trouble;
they are soon gone, and we fly away.
11 Who considers the power of your anger,
and your wrath according to the fear of you?

12 (T)So teach us to number our days
that we may get a heart of wisdom.
13 (U)Return, O Lord! (V)How long?
Have (W)pity on your servants!
14 Satisfy us in the (X)morning with your steadfast love,
that we may (Y)rejoice and be glad all our days.
15 Make us glad for as many days as you have (Z)afflicted us,
and for as many years as we have seen evil.
16 Let your (AA)work be shown to your servants,
and your glorious power to their children.
17 Let the (AB)favor[d] of the Lord our God be upon us,
and establish (AC)the work of our hands upon us;
yes, establish the work of our hands!

My Refuge and My Fortress

91 He who dwells in (AD)the shelter of the Most High
will abide in (AE)the shadow of the Almighty.
I will say[e] to the Lord, “My (AF)refuge and my (AG)fortress,
my God, in whom I (AH)trust.”

For he will deliver you from (AI)the snare of the fowler
and from the deadly pestilence.
He will (AJ)cover you with his pinions,
and under his (AK)wings you will (AL)find refuge;
his (AM)faithfulness is (AN)a shield and buckler.
(AO)You will not fear (AP)the terror of the night,
nor the arrow that flies by day,
nor the pestilence that stalks in darkness,
nor the destruction that wastes at noonday.

A thousand may fall at your side,
ten thousand at your right hand,
but it will not come near you.
You will only look with your eyes
and (AQ)see the recompense of the wicked.

Because you have made the Lord your (AR)dwelling place—
the Most High, who is my (AS)refuge[f]
10 (AT)no evil shall be allowed to befall you,
(AU)no plague come near your tent.

11 (AV)For he will command his (AW)angels concerning you
to (AX)guard you in all your ways.
12 On their hands they will bear you up,
lest you (AY)strike your foot against a stone.
13 You will tread on (AZ)the lion and the (BA)adder;
the young lion and (BB)the serpent you will (BC)trample underfoot.

14 “Because he (BD)holds fast to me in love, I will deliver him;
I will protect him, because he (BE)knows my name.
15 When he (BF)calls to me, I will answer him;
I will be with him in trouble;
I will rescue him and (BG)honor him.
16 With (BH)long life I will satisfy him
and (BI)show him my salvation.”

Joshua 24:1-33, Luke 21:1-28, Psalms 89:38-52, Proverbs 13:20-23

Today is the 22nd day of April. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I am Brian. It is wonderful to be here with you today. I trust and pray that you had a wonderful Easter Sunday yesterday, and that the power of the resurrection has become real to you, that you understand that you are walking forward into your life, understanding the resurrection power is within you pulling you forward. And speaking of moving forward, as we get into this week, so we began with Easter today, we will conclude the book of Joshua, which means that tomorrow we’ll be moving into a new era in the Bible as we approach the book of Judges, which we’ll talk about, of course, when we get there. But today we will be concluding the book of Joshua. We will be reading from the English Standard Version this week. Joshua chapter 24.

Commentary:

Alright. So, previous to beginning the book of Joshua we’d been traveling with Moses and we saw the law given and the whole formation of the people in the wilderness. And then Joshua became the leader of Israel after Moses died and led them across the Jordan into the promised land and conquered the promised land and began to settle the promised land. And we’ve reached the end of that story today, which will lead us forward into the time of the judges. So, the people who for one reason or another, became the leaders after Joshua over many generations and we’ll learn about them as we go, and we’ll talk about them as we begin tomorrow. But Joshua kind of followed the model that Moses had given him. So, if we remember, the entire book of Deuteronomy is really Moses bringing all the people together so that he can say the final things that he needs to say, and he had plenty to say, a whole books worth. We see Joshua bringing all the people together to say his final things. And he has plenty to say too, but he is something very poignant to say and poignant enough that it’s being said to us and it comes at a really good time, the day after Easter. So, Joshua’s got all the people together saying look, “here’s where you came from, here’s how we got here, here’s who God is and your ancestry, your earliest ancestors, they came from the desert. They served other gods and then God called this one man, Abram who became Abraham into this land. So, you’ve got to choose. If you’re going to have a future at all you’ve got to choose. If it’s not a good idea. If it seems evil to you to serve the Lord, the God of Israel, then choose who you’re going to serve. If it’s the gods of your father’s in the old regions, then so be it, serve them. If it’s the gods of the Amorites, then serve them. As for me, as from my house, we will serve the Lord.” Basically, Joshua is saying, “you can chase whatever you want to chase, that’s your prerogative. If you chase other gods, then wherever that road leads, that’s where you will be. As for me, there is no other God.” The people, of course, affirmed all of that and then Joshua said something that’s pretty riveting and it’s not the first time we’ve heard this, “you are witnesses against your selves that you have chosen the Lord to serve him.” That should echo and that should resonate because it is no less true of us today. We are witnesses against ourselves that we have chosen to serve the Lord. In other words, our thoughts and our words and our deeds, our actions are a witness of whether what we are saying about the Lord is true to us. Our lives render the verdict. We are judging ourselves. When we put our heads down tonight, pull the covers up and prepare to go to sleep we will have spoken with our very lives what we really believe about God on any given day. Joshua’s words were, “as for me and my house we will serve the Lord.” Everybody said they would do the same thing. The page will turn and we’ll begin the book of Judges and we’ll see that everybody didn’t do the same thing and we’ll have a pretty clear path from here, where all the roads lead. So, we have this moment, the day after Easter, the day they we’re getting ready to turn the page into a new part of the story in the Scriptures, one in which we’ll be able to see pretty clearly what not serving the Lord will lead to. And we can choose, and we will be witnesses against ourselves. And, so, may we all be able to say with all honesty and truth, “as for me and my house we will serve the Lord.”

Prayer:

Father, we come into Your presence and we declare that. Of course, this isn’t the first time we’ve declared that, and it’s not the first time that we’ve fallen away from it. And we’ve also had the opportunity to bear some of the repercussions of our actions. And, so, here we are as we move into the next part of the Bible and as we move beyond Easter where we are reminded that we have been made new. And we declare, “we will serve the Lord” and we understand that we are witnesses against ourselves. Come Holy Spirit and show us what that means in every thought, in every word in every deed as we proceed forward into this day and into this week. Come Holy Spirit we ask in the name of the risen Christ. Amen.

Joshua 24

The Covenant Renewal at Shechem

24 Joshua gathered all the tribes of Israel (A)to Shechem and (B)summoned the elders, the heads, the judges, and the officers of Israel. And (C)they presented themselves before God. And Joshua said to all the people, “Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, ‘Long ago, (D)your fathers lived beyond the Euphrates,[a] Terah, the father of Abraham and of Nahor; and (E)they served other gods. (F)Then I took your father Abraham from beyond the River[b] and (G)led him through all the land of Canaan, and made his offspring many. (H)I gave him Isaac. And to Isaac I gave (I)Jacob and Esau. (J)And I gave Esau the hill country of Seir to possess, (K)but Jacob and his children went down to Egypt. (L)And I sent Moses and Aaron, (M)and I plagued Egypt with what I did in the midst of it, and (N)afterward I brought you out.

“‘Then (O)I brought your fathers out of Egypt, and (P)you came to the sea. (Q)And the Egyptians pursued your fathers with chariots and horsemen to the Red Sea. (R)And when they cried to the Lord, (S)he put darkness between you and the Egyptians (T)and made the sea come upon them and cover them; (U)and your eyes saw what I did in Egypt. (V)And you lived in the wilderness a long time. Then I brought you to the land of the Amorites, who lived on the other side of the Jordan. (W)They fought with you, and I gave them into your hand, and you took possession of their land, and I destroyed them before you. (X)Then Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab, arose and fought against Israel. (Y)And he sent and invited Balaam the son of Beor to curse you, 10 (Z)but I would not listen to Balaam. (AA)Indeed, he blessed you. So I delivered you out of his hand. 11 (AB)And you went over the Jordan and came to Jericho, (AC)and the leaders of Jericho fought against you, and also (AD)the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Girgashites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites. And I gave them into your hand. 12 And I sent (AE)the hornet before you, which drove them out before you, the two kings of the Amorites; it was (AF)not by your sword or by your bow. 13 I gave you a land on which you had not labored (AG)and cities that you had not built, and you dwell in them. You eat the fruit of vineyards and olive orchards that you did not plant.’

Choose Whom You Will Serve

14 (AH)“Now therefore fear the Lord and serve him in sincerity and in faithfulness. (AI)Put away the gods that your fathers served beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the Lord. 15 (AJ)And if it is evil in your eyes to serve the Lord, (AK)choose this day whom you will serve, whether (AL)the gods your fathers served in the region beyond the River, or (AM)the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell. (AN)But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”

16 Then the people answered, “Far be it from us that we should forsake the Lord to serve other gods, 17 for it is the Lord our God who brought us and our fathers up from the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery, and who did those great signs in our sight and preserved us in all the way that we went, and among all the peoples through whom we passed. 18 And the Lord drove out before us all the peoples, the Amorites who lived in the land. Therefore we also will serve the Lord, for he is our God.”

19 But Joshua said to the people, “You are not able to serve the Lord, for he is (AO)a holy God. He is (AP)a jealous God; (AQ)he will not forgive your transgressions or your sins. 20 (AR)If you forsake the Lord and serve foreign gods, then (AS)he will turn and do you harm and consume you, after having done you good.” 21 And the people said to Joshua, “No, but we will serve the Lord.” 22 Then Joshua said to the people, “You are witnesses against yourselves that (AT)you have chosen the Lord, to serve him.” And they said, “We are witnesses.” 23 He said, “Then (AU)put away the foreign gods that are among you, and incline your heart to the Lord, the God of Israel.” 24 And the people said to Joshua, “The Lord our God we will serve, and his voice we will obey.” 25 So Joshua (AV)made a covenant with the people that day, and put in place (AW)statutes and rules for them at Shechem. 26 And Joshua (AX)wrote these words in the Book of the Law of God. And (AY)he took a large stone and set it up there (AZ)under the terebinth that was by the sanctuary of the Lord. 27 And Joshua said to all the people, “Behold, (BA)this stone shall be a witness against us, for (BB)it has heard all the words of the Lord that he spoke to us. Therefore it shall be a witness against you, lest you deal falsely with your God.” 28 So Joshua (BC)sent the people away, every man to his inheritance.

Joshua's Death and Burial

29 (BD)After these things Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of the Lord, died, being 110 years old. 30 And they buried him in his own inheritance at (BE)Timnath-serah, which is in the hill country of Ephraim, north of the mountain of Gaash.

31 (BF)Israel served the Lord all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders who outlived Joshua (BG)and had known all the work that the Lord did for Israel.

32 (BH)As for the bones of Joseph, which the people of Israel brought up from Egypt, they buried them at Shechem, in the piece of land (BI)that Jacob bought from the sons of Hamor the father of Shechem for a hundred pieces of money.[c] It became an inheritance of the descendants of Joseph.

33 And Eleazar the son of Aaron died, and they buried him at Gibeah, the town of (BJ)Phinehas his son, which had been given him in (BK)the hill country of Ephraim.

Luke 21:1-28

The Widow's Offering

21 (A)Jesus[a] looked up and saw the rich (B)putting their gifts into (C)the offering box, and he saw a poor widow put in two (D)small copper coins.[b] And he said, “Truly, I tell you, (E)this poor widow has put in more than all of them. For they all contributed out of their abundance, but she out of her (F)poverty put in all (G)she had to live on.”

Jesus Foretells Destruction of the Temple

(H)And while some were speaking of the temple, how it was adorned with noble stones and offerings, he said, “As for these things that you see, (I)the days will come when there will not be left here one stone upon another that will not be thrown down.” And they asked him, “Teacher, (J)when will these things be, and what will be the sign when these things are about to take place?” And he said, (K)“See that you are not led astray. For (L)many will come in my name, saying, (M)‘I am he!’ and, (N)‘The time is at hand!’ Do not go after them. And when you hear of wars and tumults, do not be (O)terrified, for these things (P)must first take place, but the end will not be at once.”

Jesus Foretells Wars and Persecution

10 Then he said to them, (Q)“Nation will rise against nation, and (R)kingdom against kingdom. 11 There will be great (S)earthquakes, and in various places (T)famines and pestilences. And there will be (U)terrors and great (V)signs from heaven. 12 But before all this (W)they will lay their hands on you and persecute you, delivering you up to (X)the synagogues and (Y)prisons, and you (Z)will be brought before (AA)kings and (AB)governors for my name's sake. 13 (AC)This will be your opportunity to bear witness. 14 Settle it therefore in your minds (AD)not to meditate beforehand how to answer, 15 for (AE)I will give you a mouth and (AF)wisdom, which none of your adversaries will be able to withstand or (AG)contradict. 16 You will be delivered up (AH)even by parents and brothers[c] and relatives and friends, and some of you they will put to death. 17 (AI)You will be hated by all for my name's sake. 18 But (AJ)not a hair of your head will perish. 19 By your (AK)endurance you will gain your lives.

Jesus Foretells Destruction of Jerusalem

20 “But (AL)when you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then know that (AM)its desolation has come near. 21 Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains, and let those who are inside the city depart, and let not those who are out in the country enter it, 22 for these are (AN)days of (AO)vengeance, to fulfill (AP)all that is written. 23 (AQ)Alas for women who are pregnant and for those who are nursing infants in those days! For there will be great distress upon the earth and (AR)wrath against this people. 24 They will fall by the edge of the sword and (AS)be led captive among all nations, and (AT)Jerusalem will be trampled underfoot by the Gentiles, (AU)until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.

The Coming of the Son of Man

25 “And (AV)there will be signs in sun and moon (AW)and stars, and on the earth (AX)distress of nations in perplexity because of the roaring of the sea and the waves, 26 people fainting with fear and with foreboding of what is coming on the world. For (AY)the powers of the heavens will be shaken. 27 And then they will see (AZ)the Son of Man coming in a cloud (BA)with power and great glory. 28 Now when these things begin to take place, straighten up and (BB)raise your heads, because (BC)your redemption is drawing near.”

Psalm 89:38-52

38 But now you have (A)cast off and rejected;
you are full of wrath against your (B)anointed.
39 You have (C)renounced (D)the covenant with your servant;
you have (E)defiled his (F)crown in the dust.
40 You have (G)breached all his walls;
you have laid his strongholds in ruins.
41 (H)All who pass by plunder him;
he has become (I)the scorn of his neighbors.
42 You have exalted the right hand of his foes;
you have made all his enemies rejoice.
43 You have also turned back the edge of his sword,
and you have not made him stand in battle.
44 You have made his splendor to cease
and cast his throne to the ground.
45 You have cut short (J)the days of his youth;
you have (K)covered him with shame. Selah

46 (L)How long, O Lord? Will you hide yourself forever?
How long will your wrath (M)burn like fire?
47 (N)Remember (O)how short my (P)time is!
For what vanity you have created all the children of man!
48 (Q)What man can live and never (R)see death?
Who can deliver his soul from the power of (S)Sheol? Selah

49 Lord, where is your (T)steadfast love of old,
which by your (U)faithfulness you swore to David?
50 (V)Remember, O Lord, how your servants are mocked,
and how I bear in my (W)heart the insults[a] of all the many nations,
51 with which your enemies mock, O Lord,
with which they mock (X)the footsteps of your (Y)anointed.

52 (Z)Blessed be the Lord forever!
Amen and Amen.

Proverbs 13:20-23

20 Whoever walks with the wise becomes wise,
but the companion of fools will suffer harm.
21 (A)Disaster[a] pursues sinners,
(B)but the righteous are rewarded with good.
22 (C)A good man leaves an inheritance to his children's children,
but (D)the sinner's wealth is laid up for the righteous.
23 The fallow ground of the poor would yield much food,
but it is swept away through (E)injustice.
