Exodus 35:10-36:38, Matthew 27:32-66, Psalms 34:1-10, Proverbs 9:7-8

Today is the 13th day of February. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I am Brian and it is a pleasure and a joy to be here with you around the global campfire that is nice and warm and bringing light and life and good news, and we just gather around and allow God’s word to speak, which is what we’re about to do. We’re reading from the Contemporary English Version this week. Exodus chapter 35 verse 10 through 36 verse 38 today.

Commentary:

Okay. It’s hard to talk about anything else but what we were reading about in the book of Matthew today. And it’s pretty hard to talk about that because for the first time we experienced the crucifixion of Jesus in our reading from the Scriptures this year. And, so, there’s not a whole lot else to say. And we know it’s the story of our salvation but if we would just sit with the humanity of the scene. It’s so heartbreaking. It is so profoundly sad to think that the Creator who fashioned beings in His own image with the idea that a mutual relationship could be formed and bound by covenant, that this creator would come and become one of us only to be killed by us. This is profoundly sad. And it doesn’t feel like it’s been that long ago since we began our journey but within the first couple of days of our journey we saw everything get blown apart in the book of Genesis. And in the scene that we’re seeing in the book of Matthew today we’re able to see just how far, just how twisted, just how backward an upside-down things had gotten among the human race. And to be honest, we could just look around now and say things are still pretty upside down and backward but now we don’t really have an excuse because there is a way. This bloody scene that we’re seeing play out on a cross and the gasps of an innocent man, His blood was shed on our behalf and we were restored to God in the process for those of us who believe. We have no business and no excuse for living backward and upside down anymore. It’s not supposed to be our reality anymore. So, if there’s a thought, if there’s something for us to live into today, it would be to sit with the brutal scene that is before us and what it cost to bring freedom into our lives and then to consider the ways that we’re living far less than free.

Prayer:

Jesus, thank You. And even as we say it the words fall flat because what can we say? We had no way to untangle the mess in our species created in Your image. We were irreversibly lost and then You came and rescued us and we didn’t earn it and there’s nothing that we can do. You’re giving it to us as a gift and so often we find ourselves not even taking the gift that cost You Your life and living into it and being transformed by it and being shaped into Your likeness. So, often we’re busy trying to make You in our image and make You do the things that we need done instead of the other way around and we’re repenting and were sitting with the starkness of the scene that the Scripture has brought into our lives today and contemplating it because there is no other story to tell. And, so, we invite Your Holy Spirit, come. Make this scene matter to us. Show us how to embrace it and show us how it is to transform us because of the work that was accomplished there, the victory that was won. Come Holy Spirit and let us sit with the weightiness of what we’ve read today and appreciate with a heart of gratitude and help us to look at the world through Your eyes. You looked at the world and loved it even though that hated You. You died for people who wanted You dead. What kind of love is that? Lead us deeper into that love we pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Hi, this is Amber from California. I’m a new listener and I just wanted to call in and say that the Daily Audio Bible has really blessed my life. I tend to have difficulties finding the time to sit down and just soak in the word and it’s really been an awesome experience for me to listen to Scripture and then reflect and have my own study. So, just wanted to call in and say what a blessing it was. I also wanted to share a prayer request with you all. I’ve been married for some time and have children with my husband and I’m just calling to ask our community to reach out and pray for my husband who has been struggling with a sleepwalk and really just a lot of spiritual warfare within our home and marriage and specifically with him. So, just wanted to call and ask the brothers and sisters to lift him up prayer and me up in prayer. Really trying to strive to be the mom and life that God has called me to be. So, thanks so much for listening and I look forward too much more in this community.

Hello everyone, this is Peggy in Texas. And first I want to thank Brian for doing an excellent job day after day, such a blessing to me personally. I’m calling…I’m asking for prayer for my precious grandson Xander. This is…I’ve called before, and he’s troubled, he’s alone, he’s manic-depressive, he’s drinking, he doesn’t have a doctor. So, he’s not getting any help. He hasn’t sought Christian friends. In fact, I don’t think he has one. Today he called, and he was frightened and afraid something might happen to him and afraid someone was out to cause him trouble. And I think he’s trying to reach out and say a call for help and yet I don’t know for sure. He’s in school and is working, an engineer student. So, as a grandmother I’, trying to keep the lines open to him and I’m trying to communicate love and guidance and, you know, personally I think he needs to be in a treatment center but financially that’s…that’s not possible. Anyway, you’ve got the picture. I’m a very concerned person, a very concerned grand mom. I don’t want to be a worrier, I want to trust the Lord, but I’m week. And, so…and I don’t have a great support system right now and I’m just calling on someone to pray with me. So, anyway I’m feeling a tad lonely and I just need you all too. And, so, I’m turning to you. Sometimes it’s just hard to pray. Maybe all of you have experienced that at some time but I’m in that boat tonight. And, so, I’m asking for you precious people to pray for my precious grandson, Xander. Thank you.

Hi, this is Victoria Soldier just calling. Wanted to say thank you Brian for all the fire that you’ve been putting out on the web and through your word and it’s been really blessing my soul and I just wanted to call and bless some of the other souls more abundantly. And I just wanted to pray for Prodigal and Rebecca and I wanted to pray for Hamm and Jamie and Tyler and I wanted to pray for the lady who wanted a friend and she was going through. I wanted to pray for those who have gone through depression and trying to help them to take away that precious life of the precious life through wanting to commit suicide. Lord, I just ask You to fill them with so much joy that they will see what You have before them, that the enemy is trying to take away them feeling not only the joy but knowing that they have salvation in You, knowing that they are going to be with You. Oh Lord You’re coming back soon. The world act like they don’t remember that You said You were coming back, they don’t remember that You are the way the truth and the light, but Lord You said You’re coming back __ without spot or wrinkle. You said we shall not all sleep but we shall be all changed in the moment, in the twinkling of an eye, when the sound is gonna sound and You gonna hear…and the mighty archangels…and the dead in Christ will arise first and we that are alive will be caught up to meet Him in the air. Lord I pray for my brothers and sisters today that the enemy’s trying to trick. You fill them with Your joy, You equip them with what You need to make this mighty journey. Oh Lord You bless those that need a friend, You bless those that need a spouse, You bless the one who is looking to have a baby and they couldn’t conceive but God You are…it all comes from You. Lord I just ask You to bless that womb Lord, that they will produce the baby that You have…

Hi this is Tony from Germany. I’m actually in Minnesota visiting my family and I just wanted to call in to….I’ve been listening to the Daily Audio Bible during my commute to their place…they’re in a nursing home, my parents. So, but for Tito, I want to tell you that I have tithed for many many years and I’m gonna tell you that the Lord has opened amazing doors for me and I believe that is because I tithe. For example, even going to Germany, it was just very miraculous and many many other things. And I just wanted to relay that to you because I wanted to give you a little bit of hope so you can continue onward. And then for Pelham, you know what __ ice. Not ICE but EIS, as you know, is just amazing amazing Italian ice cream. And, so I feel the Lord is steering you in the right business and perhaps at some point in time in planting a seed you will travel to Italy to learn different recipes, experiment with different recipes so one day you could do your own, come up with your own Italian ice recipe. So, remember you are not alone. I know that you’re reaching some low points. We are your family and we do love you. So, just remember that. Thanks for sharing your story with us and your faith and your faith journey. The other thing I wanted to say is I have played the Daily Audio Bible to my parents. My dad keeps his eyes closed a lot but when I have played the Daily Audio Bible his eyes open and he listens and at one point he took off his glasses, laid them down and blessed himself with this big…

The Daily Audio Bible Reading for Wednesday February 13, 2019 (NIV)

Exodus 35:10-36:38

10 If you have any skills, you should use them to help make what I have commanded: 11 the sacred tent with its covering and hooks, its framework and crossbars, and its post and stands; 12 the sacred chest with its carrying poles, its place of mercy, and the curtain in front of it; 13 the table with all that goes on it, including the sacred bread; 14 the lamp with its equipment and oil; 15 the incense altar with its carrying poles and sweet-smelling incense; the ordination oil; the curtain for the entrance to the sacred tent; 16 the altar for sacrifices with its bronze grating, its carrying poles, and its equipment; the large bronze bowl with its stand; 17 the curtains with the posts and stands that go around the courtyard; 18 the pegs and ropes for the tent and the courtyard; 19 and the finely woven priestly clothes for Aaron and his sons.

Gifts for the Lord

20 Moses finished speaking, and everyone left. 21 Then those who wanted to bring gifts to the Lord, brought them to be used for the sacred tent, the worship services, and the priestly clothes. 22 Men and women came willingly and gave all kinds of gold jewelry such as pins, earrings, rings, and necklaces. 23 Everyone brought their blue, purple, and red wool, their fine linen, and their cloth made of goat hair, as well as their ram skins dyed red and their fine leather. 24 Anyone who had silver or bronze or acacia wood brought it as a gift to the Lord.

25 The women who were good at weaving cloth brought the blue, purple, and red wool and the fine linen they had made. 26 And the women who knew how to make cloth from goat hair were glad to do so.

27 The leaders brought different kinds of jewels to be sewn on the special clothes and the breastpiece for the high priest. 28 They also brought sweet-smelling spices to be mixed with the incense and olive oil that were for the lamps and for ordaining the priests. 29 Moses had told the people what the Lord wanted them to do, and many of them decided to bring their gifts.

Bezalel and Oholiab

30 Moses said to the people of Israel:

The Lord has chosen Bezalel[a] of the Judah tribe. 31-33 Not only has the Lord filled him with his Spirit, but he has given him wisdom and made him a skilled craftsman who can create objects of art with gold, silver, bronze, stone, and wood. 34 The Lord is urging him and Oholiab[b] from the tribe of Dan to teach others. 35 And he has given them all kinds of artistic skills, including the ability to design and embroider with blue, purple, and red wool and to weave fine linen.

36 The Lord has given to Bezalel, Oholiab, and others the skills needed for building a place of worship, and they will follow the Lord’s instructions.

Then Moses brought together these workers who were eager to work, and he gave them the money that the people of Israel had donated for building the place of worship. In fact, so much money was being given each morning, that finally everyone stopped working and said, “Moses, there is already more money than we need for what the Lord has assigned us to do.” So Moses sent word for the people to stop giving, and they did. But there was already more than enough to do what needed to be done.

The Curtains and Coverings for the Sacred Tent

8-9 The skilled workers got together to make the sacred tent and its linen curtains woven with blue, purple, and red wool and embroidered with figures of winged creatures. Each of the ten panels was fourteen yards long and two yards wide, 10 and they were sewn together to make two curtains with five panels each. 11-13 Then fifty loops of blue cloth were put along one of the wider sides of each curtain, and the two curtains were fastened together at the loops with fifty gold hooks.

14-15 As the material for the tent, goat hair was used to weave eleven sections fifteen yards by two yards each. 16 These eleven sections were joined to make two panels, one with five and the other with six sections. 17 Fifty loops were put along one of the wider sides of each panel, 18 and the two panels were fastened at the loops with fifty bronze hooks. 19 Two other coverings were made—one with fine leather and the other with ram skins dyed red.

The Framework for the Sacred Tent

20 Acacia wood was used to build the framework for the walls of the sacred tent. 21 Each frame was fifteen feet high and twenty-seven inches wide 22-26 with two wooden pegs near the bottom. Then two silver stands were placed under each frame with sockets for the pegs, so they could be joined together. Twenty of these frames were used along the south side and twenty more along the north. 27 Six frames were used for the back wall along the west side 28-29 with two more at the southwest and northwest corners. These corner frames were joined from top to bottom. 30 Altogether, along the back wall there were eight frames with two silver stands under each of them.

31-33 Five crossbars were made for each of the wooden frames, with the center crossbar running the full length of the wall. 34 The frames and crossbars were covered with gold, and gold rings were attached to the frames to run the crossbars through.

The Inside Curtain for the Sacred Tent

35 They made the inside curtain[c] of fine linen woven with blue, purple, and red wool, and embroidered with figures of winged creatures. 36 They also made four acacia wood posts and covered them with gold. Then gold rings were fastened to the posts, which were set on silver stands.

37 For the entrance to the tent, they used a curtain of fine linen woven with blue, purple, and red wool and embroidered with fancy needlework. 38 They made five posts, covered them completely with gold, and set them each on a gold-covered bronze stand. Finally, they attached hooks for the curtain.

Footnotes:

  1. 35.30 Bezalel: See the note at 31.2.
  2. 35.34 Oholiab: Hebrew “Oholiab son of Ahisamach.”
  3. 36.35 inside curtain: Separating the holy place from the most holy place.

Matthew 27:32-66

32 On the way they met a man from Cyrene named Simon, and they forced him to carry Jesus' cross.

33 They came to a place named Golgotha, which means “Place of a Skull.”[a] 34 There they gave Jesus some wine mixed with a drug to ease the pain. But when Jesus tasted what it was, he refused to drink it.

35 The soldiers nailed Jesus to a cross and gambled to see who would get his clothes. 36 Then they sat down to guard him. 37 Above his head they put a sign that told why he was nailed there. It read, “This is Jesus, the King of the Jews.” 38 The soldiers also nailed two criminals on crosses, one to the right of Jesus and the other to his left.

39 People who passed by said terrible things about Jesus. They shook their heads and 40 shouted, “So you’re the one who claimed you could tear down the temple and build it again in three days! If you are God’s Son, save yourself and come down from the cross!”

41 The chief priests, the leaders, and the teachers of the Law of Moses also made fun of Jesus. They said, 42 “He saved others, but he can’t save himself. If he is the king of Israel, he should come down from the cross! Then we will believe him. 43 He trusted God, so let God save him, if he wants to. He even said he was God’s Son.” 44 The two criminals also said cruel things to Jesus.

The Death of Jesus

45 At noon the sky turned dark and stayed that way until three o’clock. 46 Then about that time Jesus shouted, “Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?”[b] which means, “My God, my God, why have you deserted me?”

47 Some of the people standing there heard Jesus and said, “He’s calling for Elijah.”[c] 48 One of them at once ran and grabbed a sponge. He soaked it in wine, then put it on a stick and held it up to Jesus.

49 Others said, “Wait! Let’s see if Elijah will come[d] and save him.” 50 Once again Jesus shouted, and then he died.

51 At once the curtain in the temple[e] was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook, and rocks split apart. 52 Graves opened, and many of God’s people were raised to life. 53 Then after Jesus had risen to life, they came out of their graves and went into the holy city, where they were seen by many people.

54 The officer and the soldiers guarding Jesus felt the earthquake and saw everything else that happened. They were frightened and said, “This man really was God’s Son!”

55 Many women had come with Jesus from Galilee to be of help to him, and they were there, looking on at a distance. 56 Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Joseph, and the mother of James and John[f] were some of these women.

Jesus Is Buried

57 That evening a rich disciple named Joseph from the town of Arimathea 58 went and asked for Jesus' body. Pilate gave orders for it to be given to Joseph, 59 who took the body and wrapped it in a clean linen cloth. 60 Then Joseph put the body in his own tomb that had been cut into solid rock[g] and had never been used. He rolled a big stone against the entrance to the tomb and went away.

61 All this time Mary Magdalene and the other Mary were sitting across from the tomb.

62 On the next day, which was a Sabbath, the chief priests and the Pharisees went together to Pilate. 63 They said, “Sir, we remember what that liar said while he was still alive. He claimed that in three days he would come back from death. 64 So please order the tomb to be carefully guarded for three days. If you don’t, his disciples may come and steal his body. They will tell the people that he has been raised to life, and this last lie will be worse than the first one.”[h]

65 Pilate said to them, “All right, take some of your soldiers and guard the tomb as well as you know how.” 66 So they sealed it tight and placed soldiers there to guard it.

Footnotes:

  1. 27.33 Place of a Skull: The place was probably given this name because it was near a large rock in the shape of a human skull.
  2. 27.46 Eli. . . sabachthani: These words are in Hebrew.
  3. 27.47 Elijah: In Aramaic the name “Elijah” sounds like “Eli,” which means “my God.”
  4. 27.49 Elijah will come: See the note at 16.14.
  5. 27.51 curtain in the temple: There were two curtains in the temple. One was at the entrance, and the other separated the holy place from the most holy place that the Jewish people thought of as God’s home on earth. The second curtain is probably the one that is meant.
  6. 27.56 of James and John: The Greek text has “of Zebedee’s sons” (see 26.37).
  7. 27.60 tomb. . . solid rock: Some of the Jewish people buried their dead in rooms carved into solid rock. A heavy stone was rolled against the entrance.
  8. 27.64 the first one: Probably the belief that Jesus is the Messiah.

Psalm 34:1-10

(Written by David when he pretended to be crazy in front of Abimelech, so that Abimelech would send him away, and David could leave.)

Honor the Lord

34 I will always praise the Lord.
With all my heart,
I will praise the Lord.
Let all who are helpless,
listen and be glad.
Honor the Lord with me!
Celebrate his great name.

I asked the Lord for help,
and he saved me
from all my fears.
Keep your eyes on the Lord!
You will shine like the sun
and never blush with shame.
I was a nobody, but I prayed,
and the Lord saved me
from all my troubles.

If you honor the Lord,
his angel will protect you.
Discover for yourself
that the Lord is kind.
Come to him for protection,
and you will be glad.

Honor the Lord!
You are his special people.
No one who honors the Lord
will ever be in need.
10 Young lions[a] may go hungry
or even starve,
but if you trust the Lord,
you will never miss out
on anything good.

Footnotes:

  1. 34.10 Young lions: In the Psalms wild animals often stand for God’s enemies.

Proverbs 9:7-8

True Wisdom

Correct a worthless bragger,
and all you will get
are insults and injuries.
Any bragger you correct
will only hate you.
But if you correct someone
who has common sense,
you will be loved.

Exodus 34:1-35:9, Matthew 27:15-31, Psalms 33:12-22, Proverbs 9:1-6

Today is the 12th day of…February…I had a brain freeze…February, that’s where we are and we’re just about to the middle of the month in a couple of days when we experience Valentine’s Day. And it’s great to be here with you for the next step forward in our adventure through the Scriptures this year. And this week we’re reading from the Contemporary English Version and in the Old Testament we’re reading through the book of Exodus, which we will conclude before this week is out. But today, Exodus chapter 34 verse 1 through 35 verse 9.

Commentary:

Okay. So, we’ve been watching some erratic movement back and forth in the children of Israel’s existence in the book of Exodus, so erratic that they’re bowing in worship to a golden calf and then we have the conspiracy to kill Jesus in the book of Matthew. And, so, kind of some dark territory that we’re moving through but we have to consider ourselves in these stories. Like, where are our hearts in these stories? Who would we be if we were living in those stories, right? Would we be bowing to a golden calf wondering what happened to the man of God who disappeared on the mountain? Would we be yelling nail Him to a cross in the throng of people who had been whipped into a frenzy by the trusted religious leaders? We’ll read these stories and consider ourselves maybe above the disciples, “no we wouldn't…we wouldn’t run away, no we wouldn’t deny.” Or we might read the Old Testament story and think of ourselves more along with the priests and with Moses not…we would be the people going, “what are we supposed to do now? Give us a God so that we can be led forward in our lives.” And, so, trying to put ourselves in the story, this can be disruptive, but it exposes us, it invites us forward because we have to consider how patient God is with humanity, how patient God is with us, how intentional He is, how long-suffering He is. We do not deserve it. And that’s the thing because we began to think that we do. We don’t deserve God’s compassion and grace. Why does He love us at all?

In our reading from Psalms today we got some clues. We read, “the Lord looks at the world from His throne in heaven and He watches us all. The Lord gave us each a mind, and nothing we do can be hidden from Him.” In other words, God sees and He understands and it’s a pretty radical thing to know that we’re are understood when we’re so often screaming just the opposite into the face of the Lord, but He his understand, right? Every atom, every molecule, everything that makes us who we are, every good conviction and emotion that fills our hearts finds its essence in God because we were created in His image after His likeness. Of course He understands, He’s our Father. And, so, as we continue forward and we see God giving the law we have to understand that He’s not vengefully, angrily laying down the law. Instead, He’s weaving into the fabric of this new culture the story of who He is and what it means to be set apart by Him.

And as we watch Jesus, as we watch for the first time, Jesus go to the cross in the book of Matthew, we have to acknowledge just how committed God is to setting us apart.

The Psalm goes on to say, “the Lord watches over all who honor Him and trust His kindness.” In other words, we are being fathered by God under His watchful eye. He understands us, and He was willing to come and give His life so that we could know Him intimately, so that we could come close.

The proverb told us to leave our simple ways behind and begin to live. Maybe it’s time to do that. Maybe it’s time to own our part of the relationship as we’ve talked about already this year. God has done His part. Maybe it’s time that we grow up and do our part. God does understand us, and we are loved more than we can comprehend. Maybe we should give everything we’ve got and love Him with all of our heart and our mind and our strength in return.

Prayer:

Father, we begin by humbly acknowledging Your patience, Your long-suffering, Your kindness, Your goodness to us. We acknowledge that You are our Father, and that You love us. And then next we humbly repent for the ways in which we haven’t lived as if that were true, for the ways that we’ve lived as if that were not true and have thrashed about screaming and yelling about the circumstances that we’ve navigated ourselves into. Forgive us God. You are present. We acknowledge that You wouldn’t leave us. You died for us. You wouldn’t abandon us. You are with us every moment, every breath, and You love us, and You have bestowed upon us Your Holy Spirit to lead and guide us into all truth. We acknowledge that we’re just not always paying attention. In fact, maybe we’re paying attention far less than we think. So, come Holy Spirit. Once again, we open ourselves to You and Your power of sanctification and transformation within us. Come Holy Spirit we pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Hi, I’m calling in today because I have been feeling that I’ve been needing to make this call for several weeks, but I was out of the country for part of that time so now I’m finally doing it. But I’ve been feeling that…I’ve been feeling the urge to ask everyone to think about how much does Daily Audio Bible mean to you? I know for me it’s meant so much. I’ve been listening to it for about a year now and it’s been incredible, the change that is made in my life. Finally, I understand the word of God and I can talk about it and I can understand things and it’s given me a power and a knowledge that is incredible. And, so, I started donating once a month. I set up a payment where it sends payment once a month and I think that it’s something important that we should all do if it’s valuable to you. It must cost a lot of money and time and effort to make this all happen and it’s wonderful that is free and accessible to all of us but if we want this to continue I think you need to make sure that we, that we, you know, support this financially as well…as well as, you know, all the other ways that we support it by being a community and by gathering together and supporting each other. So, I’m just asking if even if you don’t have a lot of money, I don’t, but even if you can donate $15 a month or if it’s $50 or $100 or whatever it is but just do something that’s every month because this community doesn’t just survive off of words it also requires financial backing. So, I’m just, you know, wanting to encourage you all to, if you haven’t already to go onto Daily Audio Bible __, you can set up a monthly donation so that you can…so that this can continue and more people in the future…

Hello Daily Audio Bible family. I’ve called in before and left a name but I’m not leaving my name because of a vicious family member. I just call myself in pain right now. I need you all to pray for me and my family. We’re going through a difficult time. My brother just called me, and we can’t find him. He tried to tell me that he wants to commit suicide and I don’t believe it’s gonna happen because I know God loves me and He loves him. And God’s gonna keep him because I lift him up and prayers. And I just need some more prayer to strengthen me as I go through this, not knowing where my brother is and all the things that he’s going through. He’s going through some really, really, really bad things right now. These things that he can even forgive himself for, but he knows God and he loves God. Please pray that God will reveal Himself to him right at this moment. I know this recording won’t be heard right now but I know God knows the schedule of time and I know your prayers, when they go up they don’t reach back in the past, they change everything. So, I’m asking that you pray for me, that I can be strong, for my brother. And I pray that you would have God keep my brother, keep him alive, and let him understand that this is not the end of the world, that things will get better so that he can forgive himself and that he can love himself like God loves him. Pray for his family, his wife and his children and that he would __ protect him. So, please pray my strength so I can be strong to him because I know God loves us unconditionally and He’s gonna take care of all of us unimaginably and I’m just waiting for that miracle. Let God get the glory…

Hello family, my name is Jill and I’m from the state of Washington. I am married to a wonderful man whose sexaholic. This has been a really difficult last two year transition for me as I discovered it. I was lied to and was more lied to and more lied to and now I feel like I am probably being told the truth. He is involved with multiple groups that are helping sexaholics and most importantly he’s reached out to God. That is something I shut down for quite a while because it was very difficult for me. I shut down my Lord, my Savior but I’m now reaching out to Him again and I would ask that you would pray for us, that God would just capture the heart of our home. We have all adult children, four adult children, and it’s been very trying as some of the blame has come back on me. That’s just been painful. But please family, pray for us that God would just capture our hearts, know how to respond and also that we would reach out for Him to heal us because I have been destroyed as a woman, as a partner, as an identity as a female. Thank you. I appreciate your prayers.

Hi, yeah, this is Joey from Missouri again. Sorry__ is February 8th, 2019 and it is a Friday afternoon. I just wanted to congratulate Beth from Canada on her on her legal permanent residence. Wow, congratulations, that is just wonderful. I just heard your phone call from the February 7th podcast and I just want to say that is just great. You know, sometimes…I think I mentioned I was in the final work…I’m in immigration…and it will take a while sometimes for…for applications to get approved. And sometimes we get that and it’s very easy to lose hope about that and I just want to say congratulations to Beth. And thank you to all of our __ others…so many of them. Duane from Wisconsin, Aright Holy Spirit let’s roll, Jay from New Jersey who is now from Nashville. Thank you for your encouragement. You’re a very special person and I just want to say thank you. And everybody calls, know who you are. Thank you and have a blessed day. I pray for of you. Love you.

Hi, this is Pam from Wisconsin today is February 8th. My husband was recently diagnosed with prostate cancer and we’re just feeling the overwhelming chaos regarding all the decisions that need to be made very rapidly. I do need to get the bills together today, something I’ve been avoiding because I don’t know how they’re going to get to get paid. I ask Jesus to calm my heart and keep my head clear. I had today’s Daily Audio Bible on in the background. Bob from Michigan called with a message for Tyler and gave him 2 Corinthians 1:9-10. That message dear Bob was also a message for us from the Holy Spirit and I thank you. I’ve supported Daily Audio Bible monthly as part of my missions giving for some time. Please believe me when I say your blessings for this community will far outweigh what you give. Please bring us to the Father in prayer as we walk down this road together with Him. Thank you.

Exodus 34:1-35:9

The Second Set of Commandments

34 One day the Lord said to Moses, “Cut two flat stones like the first ones I made, and I will write on them the same commandments that were on the two you broke. Be ready tomorrow morning to come up Mount Sinai and meet me at the top. No one is to come with you or to be on the mountain at all. Don’t even let the sheep and cattle graze at the foot of the mountain.” So Moses cut two flat stones like the first ones, and early the next morning he carried them to the top of Mount Sinai, just as the Lord had commanded.

The Lord God came down in a cloud and stood beside Moses there on the mountain. God spoke his holy name, “the Lord.”[a] Then he passed in front of Moses and called out, “I am the Lord God. I am merciful and very patient with my people. I show great love, and I can be trusted. I keep my promises to my people forever, but I also punish anyone who sins. When people sin, I punish them and their children, and also their grandchildren and great-grandchildren.”

Moses quickly bowed down to the ground and worshiped the Lord. He prayed, “Lord, if you really are pleased with me, I pray that you will go with us. It is true that these people are sinful and rebellious, but forgive our sin and let us be your people.”

A Promise and Its Demands

10 The Lord said:

I promise to perform miracles for you that have never been seen anywhere on earth. Neighboring nations will stand in fear and know that I was the one who did these marvelous things. 11 I will force out the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites, but you must do what I command you today. 12 Don’t make treaties with any of those people. If you do, it will be like falling into a trap. 13 Instead, you must destroy their altars and tear down the sacred poles[b] they use in the worship of the goddess Asherah. 14 I demand your complete loyalty—you must not worship any other god! 15 Don’t make treaties with the people there, or you will soon find yourselves worshiping their gods and taking part in their sacrificial meals. 16 Your men will even marry their women and be influenced to worship their gods.

17 Don’t make metal images of gods.

18 Don’t fail to observe the Festival of Thin Bread in the month of Abib.[c] Obey me and eat bread without yeast for seven days during Abib, because that is the month you left Egypt.

19 The first-born males of your families and of your flocks and herds belong to me.

20 You can save the life of a first-born donkey[d] by sacrificing a lamb; if you don’t, you must break the donkey’s neck. You must save every first-born son.

Bring an offering every time you come to worship.

21 Do your work in six days and rest on the seventh day, even during the seasons for plowing and harvesting. 22 Celebrate the Harvest Festival[e] each spring when you start harvesting your wheat, and celebrate the Festival of Shelters[f] each autumn when you pick your fruit.

23 Your men must come to worship me three times a year, because I am the Lord God of Israel. 24 I will force the nations out of your land and enlarge your borders. Then no one will try to take your property when you come to worship me these three times each year.

25 When you sacrifice an animal on the altar, don’t offer bread made with yeast. And don’t save any part of the Passover meal for the next day.

26 I am the Lord your God, and you must bring the first part of your harvest to the place of worship.

Don’t boil a young goat in its mother’s milk.

27 The Lord told Moses to put these laws in writing, as part of his agreement with Israel. 28 Moses stayed on the mountain with the Lord for forty days and nights, without eating or drinking. And he wrote down the Ten Commandments, the most important part of God’s agreement with his people.

Moses Comes Down from Mount Sinai

29 Moses came down from Mount Sinai, carrying the Ten Commandments. His face was shining brightly because the Lord had been speaking to him. But Moses did not know at first that his face was shining. 30 When Aaron and the others looked at Moses, they saw that his face was shining, and they were afraid to go near him. 31 Moses called out for Aaron and the leaders to come to him, and he spoke with them. 32 Then the rest of the people of Israel gathered around Moses, and he gave them the laws that the Lord had given him on Mount Sinai.

33 The face of Moses kept shining, and after he had spoken with the people, he covered his face with a veil. 34 Moses would always remove the veil when he went into the sacred tent to speak with the Lord. And when he came out, he would tell the people everything the Lord had told him to say. 35 They could see that his face was still shining. So after he had spoken with them, he would put the veil back on and leave it on until the next time he went to speak with the Lord.

Laws for the Sabbath

35 Moses called together the people of Israel and told them that the Lord had said:

You have six days in which to do your work. But the seventh day must be dedicated to me, your Lord, as a day of rest. Whoever works on the Sabbath will be put to death. Don’t even build a cooking fire at home on the Sabbath.

Offerings for the Sacred Tent

Moses told the people of Israel that the Lord had said:

I would welcome an offering from anyone who wants to give something. You may bring gold, silver, or bronze; blue, purple, or red wool; fine linen; goat hair; tanned ram skin or fine leather; acacia wood; olive oil for the lamp; sweet-smelling spices for the oil of dedication and for the incense; or onyx[g] stones or other gems for the sacred vest and breastpiece.

The Death Sentence

15 During Passover the governor always freed a prisoner chosen by the people. 16 At that time a well-known terrorist named Jesus Barabbas[a] was in jail. 17 So when the crowd came together, Pilate asked them, “Which prisoner do you want me to set free? Do you want Jesus Barabbas or Jesus who is called the Messiah?” 18 Pilate knew that the leaders had brought Jesus to him because they were jealous.

19 While Pilate was judging the case, his wife sent him a message. It said, “Don’t have anything to do with that innocent man. I have had nightmares because of him.”

20 But the chief priests and the leaders convinced the crowds to ask for Barabbas to be set free and for Jesus to be killed. 21 Pilate asked the crowd again, “Which of these two men do you want me to set free?”

“Barabbas!” they replied.

22 Pilate asked them, “What am I to do with Jesus, who is called the Messiah?”

They all yelled, “Nail him to a cross!”

23 Pilate answered, “But what crime has he done?”

“Nail him to a cross!” they yelled even louder.

24 Pilate saw that there was nothing he could do and that the people were starting to riot. So he took some water and washed his hands[b] in front of them and said, “I won’t have anything to do with killing this man. You are the ones doing it!”

25 Everyone answered, “We and our own families will take the blame for his death!”

26 Pilate set Barabbas free. Then he ordered his soldiers to beat Jesus with a whip and nail him to a cross.

Soldiers Make Fun of Jesus

27 The governor’s soldiers led Jesus into the fortress[c] and brought together the rest of the troops. 28 They stripped off Jesus' clothes and put a scarlet robe[d] on him. 29 They made a crown out of thorn branches and placed it on his head, and they put a stick in his right hand. The soldiers knelt down and pretended to worship him. They made fun of him and shouted, “Hey, you king of the Jews!” 30 Then they spit on him. They took the stick from him and beat him on the head with it.

Jesus Is Nailed to a Cross

31 When the soldiers had finished making fun of Jesus, they took off the robe. They put his own clothes back on him and led him off to be nailed to a cross.

Footnotes:

  1. 27.16 Jesus Barabbas: Here and in verse 17 many manuscripts have “Barabbas.”
  2. 27.24 washed his hands: To show that he was innocent.
  3. 27.27 fortress: The place where the Roman governor stayed. It was probably at Herod’s palace west of Jerusalem, though it may have been Fortress Antonia north of the temple, where the Roman troops were stationed.
  4. 27.28 scarlet robe: This was probably a Roman soldier’s robe.

Psalm 33:12-22

12 The Lord blesses each nation
that worships only him.
He blesses his chosen ones.
13 The Lord looks at the world
14 from his throne in heaven,
and he watches us all.
15 The Lord gave us each a mind,
and nothing we do
can be hidden from him.

16 Mighty armies alone
cannot win wars for a king;
great strength by itself
cannot keep a soldier safe.
17 In war the strength of a horse
cannot be trusted
to take you to safety.
18 But the Lord watches over
all
who honor him
and trust his kindness.
19 He protects them from death
and starvation.

20 We depend on you, Lord,
to help and protect us.
21 You make our hearts glad
because we trust you,
the only God.
22 Be kind and bless us!
We depend on you.

Proverbs 9:1-6

Wisdom Gives a Feast

Wisdom has built her house
with its seven columns.
She has prepared the meat
and set out the wine.
Her feast is ready.

She has sent her servant women
to announce her invitation
from the highest hills:
“Everyone who is ignorant
or foolish is invited!
All of you are welcome
to my meat and wine.
If you want to live,
give up your foolishness
and let understanding
guide your steps.”

Exodus 32:1-33:23, Matthew 26:69-27:14, Psalms 33:1-11, Proverbs 8:33-36

Today is the 11th day of February. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I’m Brian, of course, like I am every day and you are you like you are every day and here we are together like we are every day surrounding the global campfire as we come together to take the next step and get ourselves into this work week. So, we’re reading from the Contemporary English Version this week and we’ll pick up where we left off yesterday, of course, and there is some drama brewing in the wilderness. Exodus chapter 32 and 33 today.

Commentary:

Alright. So, in the book of Exodus we witnessed…I mean…events that should make us speechless, at least in relation to the story, like, jaw-dropping stuff. Here the children of Israel have been brought out of Egypt in miraculous fashion, have walked across the Red Sea, are in the wilderness around Mount Sinai where God has come down to meet with His people and Moses has been gone 40 days and their antsy that he’s not coming back. And, so they decide to create an idol and bow in worship to the idol that they watched being made and worship this golden calf as if it was the deity that brought them out of Egypt. That’s pretty staggering stuff. Unfortunately, it won’t will be the last time in the Bible that we see a golden calf. And for that matter, cows are still worshiped among certain cultures today by millions of people. But I mean in the story that we have been tracking since the beginning of the year we come to this point where God has by his strong arm set a people apart and brought them miraculously out where he could reshape them and give them a new identity and this is what we find, idol worship? How could this happen, right? After all that God had brought them through, how could this happen? And that’s what God thought, right? Go down the mountain right now, He’s telling Moses, your people that you brought from Egypt have corrupted themselves, right? They’re worshiping a golden calf and claiming that the golden calf brought them out of Egypt. So, I mean on one hand, this would almost be funny if it weren’t so heartbreaking. God had moved heaven and earth to put in motion a promise that took generations, centuries to develop and He hadn’t just shown His existence, but also His power in Egypt and He’d been feeding the people in the wilderness while leading them by a pillar of fire in the night and a cloud in the day. So, God was obviously in their midst and He had obviously chosen them. They had not only been told of their ancient story but of the story that they were currently living. In fact, they were at that mountain to meet with God and they made a false God at that mountain to worship. So, this might even be funny in our own lives too if we saw ourselves behaving this way until we actually do see ourselves behaving this way. And then it’s equally heartbreaking. And when God seems distant to us or the path is fogged in and we don’t know which way to go, we often find ourselves ignoring the obvious, that God has not departed, He would not abandon us, that He is present, that He has been sustaining us in ways that we’ve chosen to ignore and then we get obsessed and we get compulsive and we start looking for anything that’s gonna promise life, even if it’s only going to bring death, even if it’s only idolatry. So, let’s remember that the things that we give our hearts in search of life that is not God, that is idol and we find ourselves bowing before these idols perhaps more than we might realize and this is a big, big deal. Our tendency toward idolatry explains so much about our lives and the condition of our lives. And we have to pay attention because God is a jealous God, which doesn’t mean God is an insecure God, right, or a manipulative God. God is faithful and loyal and good and it breaks His heart when we betray Him. And let’s pause. If we are being faithful and loyal and good in a relationship only to find out that the person we have given our hearts to have been disloyal and unfaithful our hearts would be broken too and we would probably start acting very erratically very quickly. So, this isn’t something that we do not understand it. It’s actually a pretty sobering reality which we press into, that we can affect the heart of God like that, through our disloyalty and unfaithfulness. That should be pretty stark because it is pretty stark.

Prayer:

Holy Spirit, we invite You to come into this. What are the ways that we’ve been searching for life that isn’t You and that we’ve been giving our hearts in worship to that person, that thing, that goal, that expectation, what are the ways, what are the things that we’ve been turning to for life that aren’t You? Things that may not be bad in and of themselves, but that we are turning to in access in hope for comfort that only You can provide. This exposes idolatry and that is a stark thing because we would never think that we are practicing idolatry in any way. We would never bow down to some kind of golden calf, that’s part of our culture. That’s not something we can even really relate very well to. Oh, but we can bow to bank accounts. We can bow to food. We can bow to people. We can look outside of our relationship with You and try to find a little life on the side. The thing is, if we tried that kind of behavior in our daily lives it would wreak havoc. And yet we don’t realize the havoc that we wreak on our lives spiritually that then back fills into our daily lives by behaving this way. So, we take some time to press into this today. Yes, we would rather end today with some great word of encouragement that would help us navigate forcefully and confidently through this day, but You are leading us today to consider what we are giving our hearts to that aren’t You. And, so, we’ll follow the path where You lead. What are those things Holy Spirit? We give ourselves to contemplating that today and opening ourselves to repentance. Come Holy Spirit we pray. In Jesus’ name we ask. Amen.

Exodus 32-33

The People Make an Idol To Worship

32 After the people saw that Moses had been on the mountain for a long time, they went to Aaron and said, “Make us an image of a god who will lead and protect us. Moses brought us out of Egypt, but nobody knows what has happened to him.”

Aaron told them, “Bring me the gold earrings that your wives and sons and daughters are wearing.” Everybody took off their earrings and brought them to Aaron, then he melted them and made an idol in the shape of a young bull.

All the people said to one another, “This is the god who brought us out of Egypt!”

When Aaron saw what was happening, he built an altar in front of the idol and said, “Tomorrow we will celebrate in honor of the Lord.” The people got up early the next morning and killed some animals to be used for sacrifices and others to be eaten. Then everyone ate and drank so much that they began to carry on like wild people.

The Lord said to Moses:

Hurry back down! Those people you led out of Egypt are acting like fools. They have already stopped obeying me and have made themselves an idol in the shape of a young bull. They have bowed down to it, offered sacrifices, and said that it is the god who brought them out of Egypt. Moses, I have seen how stubborn these people are, 10 and I’m angry enough to destroy them, so don’t try to stop me. But I will make your descendants into a great nation.

11 Moses tried to get the Lord God to change his mind:

Our Lord, you used your mighty power to bring these people out of Egypt. Now don’t become angry and destroy them. 12 If you do, the Egyptians will say that you brought your people out here into the mountains just to get rid of them. Please don’t be angry with your people. Don’t destroy them!

13 Remember the solemn promise you made to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. You promised that someday they would have as many descendants as there are stars in the sky and that you would give them land.

14 So even though the Lord had threatened to destroy the people, he changed his mind and let them live.

15-16 Moses went back down the mountain with the two flat stones on which God had written all of his laws with his own hand, and he had used both sides of the stones.

17 When Joshua heard the noisy shouts of the people, he said to Moses, “A battle must be going on down in the camp.”

18 But Moses replied, “It doesn’t sound like they are shouting because they have won or lost a battle. They are singing wildly!”

19 As Moses got closer to the camp, he saw the idol, and he also saw the people dancing around. This made him so angry that he threw down the stones and broke them to pieces at the foot of the mountain. 20 He melted the idol the people had made, and he ground it into powder. He scattered it in their water and made them drink it. 21 Moses asked Aaron, “What did these people do to harm you? Why did you make them sin in this terrible way?”

22 Aaron answered:

Don’t be angry with me. You know as well as I do that they are determined to do evil. 23 They even told me, “That man Moses led us out of Egypt, but now we don’t know what has happened to him. Make us a god to lead us.” 24 Then I asked them to bring me their gold earrings. They took them off and gave them to me. I threw the gold into a fire, and out came this bull.

25 Moses knew that the people were out of control and that it was Aaron’s fault. And now they had made fools of themselves in front of their enemies. 26 So Moses stood at the gate of the camp and shouted, “Everyone who is on the Lord’s side come over here!”

Then the men of the Levi tribe gathered around Moses, 27 and he said to them, “The Lord God of Israel commands you to strap on your swords and go through the camp, killing your relatives, your friends, and your neighbors.”

28 The men of the Levi tribe followed his orders, and that day they killed about three thousand men. 29 Moses said to them, “You obeyed the Lord and did what was right, and so you will serve as his priests for the people of Israel. It was hard for you to kill your own sons and brothers, but the Lord has blessed you and made you his priests today.”

30 The next day Moses told the people, “This is a terrible thing you have done. But I will go back to the Lord to see if I can do something to keep this sin from being held against you.”

31 Moses returned to the Lord and said, “The people have committed a terrible sin. They have made a gold idol to be their god. 32 But I beg you to forgive them. If you don’t, please wipe my name out of your book.”[a]

33 The Lord replied, “I will wipe out of my book the name of everyone who has sinned against me. 34 Now take my people to the place I told you about, and my angel will lead you. But when the time comes, I will punish them for this sin.”

35 So the Lord punished the people of Israel with a terrible disease for talking Aaron into making the gold idol.

The Lord Tells Israel To Leave Mount Sinai

33 The Lord said to Moses:

You led the people of Israel out of Egypt. Now get ready to lead them to the land I promised their ancestors Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. 2-3 It is a land rich with milk and honey, and I will send an angel to force out those people who live there—the Canaanites, the Amorites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites. I would go with my people, but they are so rebellious that I would destroy them before they get there.

4-5 Even before the Lord said these harsh things, he had told Moses, “These people really are rebellious, and I would kill them at once, if I went with them. But tell them to take off their fancy jewelry, then I’ll decide what to do with them.” So the people started mourning, and after leaving Mount Sinai,[b] they stopped wearing fancy jewelry.

The Lord Is with His People

Moses used to set up a tent far from camp. He called it the “meeting tent,” and whoever needed some message from the Lord would go there. Each time Moses went out to the tent, everyone would stand at the entrance to their own tents and watch him enter. 9-11 Then they would bow down because a thick cloud would come down in front of the tent, and the Lord would speak to Moses face to face, just like a friend. Afterwards, Moses would return to camp, but his young assistant Joshua[c] would stay at the tent.

The Lord Promises To Be with His People

12 Moses said to the Lord, “I know that you have told me to lead these people to the land you promised them. But you have not told me who my assistant will be. You have said that you are my friend and that you are pleased with me. 13 If this is true, let me know what your plans are, then I can obey and continue to please you. And don’t forget that you have chosen this nation to be your own.”

14 The Lord said, “I will go with you and give you peace.”

15 Then Moses replied, “If you aren’t going with us, please don’t make us leave this place. 16 But if you do go with us, everyone will know that you are pleased with your people and with me. That way, we will be different from the rest of the people on earth.”

17 So the Lord told him, “I will do what you have asked, because I am your friend and I am pleased with you.”

18 Then Moses said, “I pray that you will let me see you in all of your glory.”

19 The Lord answered:

All right. I am the Lord, and I show mercy and kindness to anyone I choose. I will let you see my glory and hear my holy name, 20 but I won’t let you see my face, because anyone who sees my face will die. 21 There is a rock not far from me. Stand beside it, 22 and before I pass by in all of my shining glory, I will put you in a large crack in the rock. I will cover your eyes with my hand until I have passed by. 23 Then I will take my hand away, and you will see my back. You will not see my face.

Footnotes:

  1. 32.32 your book: The people of Israel believed that the Lord kept a record of the names of his people, and anyone whose name was removed from that book no longer belonged to the Lord.
  2. 33.6 Mount Sinai: The Hebrew text has “Mount Horeb,” another name for Sinai.
  3. 33.9-11 Joshua: Hebrew “Joshua son of Nun.”

Matthew 26:69-27:14

Peter Says He Doesn’t Know Jesus

69 While Peter was sitting out in the courtyard, a servant girl came up to him and said, “You were with Jesus from Galilee.”

70 But in front of everyone Peter said, “That isn’t so! I don’t know what you are talking about!”

71 When Peter had gone out to the gate, another servant girl saw him and said to some people there, “This man was with Jesus from Nazareth.”

72 Again Peter denied it, and this time he swore, “I don’t even know that man!”

73 A little while later some people standing there walked over to Peter and said, “We know that you are one of them. We can tell it because you talk like someone from Galilee.”

74 Peter began to curse and swear, “I don’t know that man!”

Right then a rooster crowed, 75 and Peter remembered that Jesus had said, “Before a rooster crows, you will say three times that you don’t know me.” Then Peter went out and cried hard.

Jesus Is Taken to Pilate

27 Early the next morning all the chief priests and the nation’s leaders met and decided that Jesus should be put to death. They tied him up and led him away to Pilate the governor.

The Death of Judas

Judas had betrayed Jesus, but when he learned that Jesus had been sentenced to death, he was sorry for what he had done. He returned the thirty silver coins to the chief priests and leaders and said, “I have sinned by betraying a man who has never done anything wrong.”

“So what? That’s your problem,” they replied. Judas threw the money into the temple and then went out and hanged himself.

The chief priests picked up the money and said, “This money was paid to have a man killed. We can’t put it in the temple treasury.” Then they had a meeting and decided to buy a field that belonged to someone who made clay pots. They wanted to use it as a graveyard for foreigners. That’s why people still call that place “Field of Blood.” So the words of the prophet Jeremiah came true,

“They took
the thirty silver coins,
the price of a person
among the people of Israel.
10 They paid it
for a potter’s field,[a]
as the Lord
had commanded me.”

Pilate Questions Jesus

11 Jesus was brought before Pilate the governor, who asked him, “Are you the king of the Jews?”

“Those are your words!” Jesus answered. 12 And when the chief priests and leaders brought their charges against him, he did not say a thing.

13 Pilate asked him, “Don’t you hear what crimes they say you have done?” 14 But Jesus did not say anything, and the governor was greatly amazed.

Footnotes:

  1. 27.10 a potter’s field: Perhaps a field owned by someone who made clay pots. But it may have been a field where potters came to get clay or to make pots or to throw away their broken pieces of pottery.

Psalm 33:1-11

Sing Praises to the Lord

33 You are the Lord’s people.
Obey him and celebrate!
He deserves your praise.
Praise the Lord with harps!
Use harps with ten strings
to make music for him.
Sing a new song. Shout!
Play beautiful music.

The Lord is truthful;
he can be trusted.
He loves justice and fairness,
and he is kind to everyone
everywhere on earth.

The Lord made the heavens
and everything in them
by his word.
He scooped up the ocean
and stored the water.
Everyone in this world
should worship
and honor
the Lord!
As soon as he spoke
the world was created;
at his command,
the earth was formed.

10 The Lord destroys the plans
and spoils the schemes
of the nations.
11 But what the Lord has planned
will stand forever.
His thoughts never change.

Proverbs 8:33-36

33 Listen carefully
to my instructions,
and you will be wise.

34 Come to my home each day
and listen to me.
You will find happiness.
35 By finding me, you find life,
and the Lord will be pleased
with you.
36 But if you don’t find me,
you hurt only yourself,
and if you hate me,
you are in love with death.

Exodus 30:11-31:18, Matthew 26:47-68, Psalms 32:1-11, Proverbs 8:27-32

Today is the 10th day of February. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I am Brian and here we are, we reach out together and twist the knob, swing wide the gates, and walk into a shiny, sparkly new week together as we continue our journey that, day by day, will lead us…well…will lead us week by week and then week by week will lead us month by month through the entire Bible this year. And what a journey it has already been. So, we’re in a brand-new week, we’ll read from a new translation, this week the Contemporary English Version. And we’re on the same path, so we’ll pick up where we left off yesterday. Exodus chapter 30 verse 11 to 31 verse 18.

Prayer:

Father, we thank You for Your word and we thank You for bringing us here to the beginning of this, the seventh week of the year. And that in itself is hard to believe. It seems like yesterday, yet this kind of how porous time is and yet one thing that is constant is this rhythm where we come together around the global campfire as a community each and every day and allow Your word to wash over us and speak to us and inform us and give us counsel for the day. And, so, we thank You for this gift and we thank You for this week out in front of us. We invite Your Holy Spirit now in advance before any missteps. Come Holy Spirit and lead us on the path that we should walk this week and we certainly won’t be blaming You for the times that we choose not to listen, but we also commit ourselves to listening. Come Holy Spirit we pray. In Jesus’ name we ask. Amen.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Hi Nonny. I’m calling in actually to encourage you. I just wanted to remind you of the story in the Bible that occurred when Moses and Aaron went to go speak to Pharaoh __ situation __ and Moses told God, “look, I did what you told me to do. I had the right approach to it, the right expectation, I was confident, but it did work out and it got worse.” What I love about that, that verse that it showed __ that God had a plan for even that moment, that moment of despair and confusion of why certain things are happening in our lives and we try to have the right approach to it. God has a plan for even your situation. God is lifting you up, He’s pulling you up and He’s just telling you to keep holding onto that robe, the hem of his garment. In Philippians chapter 1 verse 6 it says, “be confident of this very thing that he who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ.” God will not abandon you, He will bring you through, He will keep that good work that is within. He will keep progressing you and evolving you and the word will bring you through. He loves you so much. He has not forgotten you. So, keep seeking after Him, going after Him relentlessly. Whatever it takes to get closer to Jesus. If you need to spend hours in your car just talking to God, do it. Just don’t let go of Jesus. He’s not letting go of you. We love you at the DAB and so does God. Bless you honey.

Yes, hi my name…I’m from New Jersey…I’m calling, this is my first time calling in, this is my first time following Daily Audio Bible. I’m calling to ask if you guys could please pray for me. I’m looking for a full-time permanent job. I’m in my late 50s and it’s been difficult to find even though I’m a nurse. I also would like to ask if you would pray for a person that I’m working with. I work as a substitute. I work with an autistic student that I know is very smart and I just pray that God will open up his brain so that he can show the place that he goes to school and home all the things that he knows. Also, if you can just pray for my…I have two girls that are not talking to each other right now. If you can just pray for them I really appreciate it. And just continue to pray for me so I can continue follow Daily Audio Bible, daily. Thank you. God bless.

Good morning Daily Audio Bible brothers and sisters, this is Amazed by Grace in Massachusetts. I’ve been listening to the Daily Audio Bible about three years and am so excited of how God has blessed me and given me the opportunity to be part of so many of your lives as you share and we are able to pray for one another. I was so happy to hear your call this morning Margo and that you are doing better in your adjustment to this huge change in your life. I just praise the Lord that you and your husband are taking this next up. And I want Jane to know in New York that we’re praying for her and that you will find friendships in the church where you can be encouraged and we continue to pray for Margaret Ray and for others who are struggling in loneliness. And so good to hear from the Prodigal that you’re doing better and persevering. It’s so wonderful to be part of this community. This morning I’m on my way to __ to help care for some little people while their moms are busy and I just so thankful for this and other ways that we can serve him. Blessings on all of you today. Thank you again to the Hardin’s and all the team that make this ministry possible. Bye-bye for now. Gld bless.

Good morning family this is T from Salt Lake City Utah. First time calling, been listening since probably Thanksgiving of last year. So, this will be the first full year I’ve done. It’s been wonderful. To be honest to get to the point. I guess. I’m calling first of all just to thank everyone for just the prayers that they put out there for everyone else. The encouragement is wonderful to hear. I could use a bit myself to be honest. I would say over the last six months or so I just kind of felt an absence of the peace of God that I used to feel on a daily basis and I don’t know what’s happened or what’s changed. I, you know, I do, I’ve, I listen to the Bible, I don’t have a lot of time to read the Bible, but I do listen to every day. But I mean I just I don’t know, I’ve struggled with depression, with, you know, despair and thoughts of just not taking my life but rather just wanting it to end so to speak I mean if that makes sense. I just, I guess I just need prayer to have the strength to keep going and to know that this is probably a time when I’m in the waiting and I’m waiting for something but I just pray for…pray for me family. Pray for strength that I will continue to just get up and march forward even when it feels like I’m not…I don’t feel like He’s there sometimes. I thank you all so much. I love you guys. Keep it up. Bye.

The Daily Audio Bible Reading for Sunday February 10, 2019 (NIV)

Exodus 30:11-31:18

The Money for the Sacred Tent

11 The Lord said to Moses:

12 Find out how many grown men there are in Israel and require each of them to pay me to keep him safe from danger while you are counting them. 13-15 Each man over nineteen, whether rich or poor, must pay me the same amount of money, weighed according to the official standards. 16 This money is to be used for the upkeep of the sacred tent, and because of it, I will never forget my people.

The Large Bronze Bowl

17 The Lord said to Moses:

18-21 Make a large bronze bowl and a bronze stand for it. Then put them between the altar for sacrifice and the sacred tent, so the priests can wash their hands and feet before entering the tent or offering a sacrifice on the altar. Each priest in every generation must wash himself in this way, or else he will die right there.

The Oil for Dedication and Ordination

22 The Lord said to Moses:

23-25 Mix a gallon of olive oil with the following costly spices: twelve pounds of myrrh, six pounds of cinnamon, six pounds of cane, and twelve pounds of cassia. Measure these according to the official standards. Then use this sacred mixture 26 for dedicating the tent and chest, 27 the table with its equipment, the lampstand with its equipment, the incense altar with all its utensils, 28 the altar for sacrifices, and the large bowl with its stand. 29 By dedicating them in this way, you will make them so holy that anyone who even touches them will become holy.

30 When you ordain Aaron and his sons as my priests, sprinkle them with some of this oil, 31 and say to the people of Israel: “This oil must always be used in the ordination service of a priest. It is holy because it is dedicated to the Lord. 32 So treat it as holy! Don’t ever use it for everyday purposes or mix any for yourselves. 33 If you do, you will no longer belong to the Lord’s people.”

The Sweet-Smelling Incense

34-35 Mix equal amounts of the costly spices stacte, onycha, galbanum, and pure frankincense, then add salt to make the mixture pure and holy. 36 Pound some of it into powder and sprinkle it in front of the sacred chest, where I meet with you. Be sure to treat this incense as something very holy. 37 It is truly holy because it is dedicated to me, so don’t ever make any for yourselves. 38 If you ever make any of it to use as perfume, you will no longer belong to my people.

The Lord Chooses Bezalel and Oholiab

31 The Lord said to Moses:

I have chosen Bezalel[a] from the Judah tribe to make the sacred tent and its furnishings. 3-5 Not only have I filled him with my Spirit, but I have given him wisdom and made him a skilled craftsman who can create objects of art with gold, silver, bronze, stone, and wood. I have appointed Oholiab[b] from the tribe of Dan to work with him, and I have also given skills to those who will help them make everything exactly as I have commanded you: 7-11 the sacred tent with its furnishings, the sacred chest with its place of mercy, the table with all that is on it, the lamp with its equipment, the incense altar, the altar for sacrifices with its equipment, the bronze bowl with its stand, the beautiful priestly clothes for Aaron and his sons, the oil for dedication and ordination services, and the sweet-smelling incense for the holy place.

Laws for the Sabbath

12-13 Moses told the Israelites that the Lord had said:

The Sabbath belongs to me. Now I command you and your descendants to always obey the laws of the Sabbath. By doing this, you will know that I have chosen you as my own. 14-15 Keep the Sabbath holy. You have six days to do your work, but the Sabbath is mine, and it must remain a day of rest. If you work on the Sabbath, you will no longer be part of my people, and you will be put to death.

16 Every generation of Israelites must respect the Sabbath. 17 This day will always serve as a reminder, both to me and to the Israelites, that I made the heavens and the earth in six days, then on the seventh day I rested and relaxed.

18 When God had finished speaking to Moses on Mount Sinai, he gave him the two flat stones on which he had written all of his laws with his own hand.

Footnotes:

  1. 31.2 Bezalel: Hebrew “Bezalel, son of Uri and grandson of Hur.”
  2. 31.6 Oholiab: Hebrew “Oholiab son of Ahisamach.”

Matthew 26:47-68

Jesus Is Arrested

47 Jesus was still speaking, when Judas the betrayer came up. He was one of the twelve disciples, and a large mob armed with swords and clubs was with him. They had been sent by the chief priests and the nation’s leaders. 48 Judas had told them ahead of time, “Arrest the man I greet with a kiss.”[a]

49 Judas walked right up to Jesus and said, “Hello, teacher.” Then Judas kissed him.

50 Jesus replied, “My friend, why are you here?”[b]

The men grabbed Jesus and arrested him. 51 One of Jesus' followers pulled out a sword. He struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his ear.

52 But Jesus told him, “Put your sword away. Anyone who lives by fighting will die by fighting. 53 Don’t you know that I could ask my Father, and right away he would send me more than twelve armies of angels? 54 But then, how could the words of the Scriptures come true, which say that this must happen?”

55 Jesus said to the mob, “Why do you come with swords and clubs to arrest me like a criminal? Day after day I sat and taught in the temple, and you didn’t arrest me. 56 But all this happened, so that what the prophets wrote would come true.”

All of Jesus' disciples left him and ran away.

Jesus Is Questioned by the Council

57 After Jesus had been arrested, he was led off to the house of Caiaphas the high priest. The nation’s leaders and the teachers of the Law of Moses were meeting there. 58 But Peter followed along at a distance and came to the courtyard of the high priest’s palace. He went in and sat down with the guards to see what was going to happen.

59 The chief priests and the whole council wanted to put Jesus to death. So they tried to find some people who would tell lies about him in court.[c] 60 But they could not find any, even though many did come and tell lies. At last, two men came forward 61 and said, “This man claimed that he would tear down God’s temple and build it again in three days.”

62 The high priest stood up and asked Jesus, “Why don’t you say something in your own defense? Don’t you hear the charges they are making against you?” 63 But Jesus did not answer. So the high priest said, “With the living God looking on, you must tell the truth. Tell us, are you the Messiah, the Son of God?”[d]

64 “That is what you say!” Jesus answered. “But I tell all of you,

‘Soon you will see
the Son of Man
sitting at the right side[e]
of God All-Powerful
and coming on the clouds
of heaven.’”

65 The high priest then tore his robe and said, “This man claims to be God! We don’t need any more witnesses! You have heard what he said. 66 What do you think?”

They answered, “He is guilty and deserves to die!” 67 Then they spit in his face and hit him with their fists. Others slapped him 68 and said, “You think you are the Messiah! So tell us who hit you!”

Footnotes:

  1. 26.48 the man I greet with a kiss: It was the custom for people to greet each other with a kiss on the cheek.
  2. 26.50 Why are you here: Or “do what you came for.”
  3. 26.59 some people who would tell lies about him in court: The Law of Moses taught that two witnesses were necessary before a person could be put to death (see verse 60).
  4. 26.63 Son of God: One of the titles used for the kings of Israel.
  5. 26.64 right side: See the note at 22.44.

Psalm 32

(A special psalm by David.)

The Joy of Forgiveness

32 Our God, you bless everyone
whose sins you forgive
and wipe away.
You bless them by saying,
“You told me your sins,
without trying to hide them,
and now I forgive you.”

Before I confessed my sins,
my bones felt limp,
and I groaned all day long.
Night and day your hand
weighed heavily on me,
and my strength was gone
as in the summer heat.

So I confessed my sins
and told them all to you.
I said, “I’ll tell the Lord
each one of my sins.”
Then you forgave me
and took away my guilt.

We worship you, Lord,
and we should always pray
whenever we find out
that we have sinned.[a]
Then we won’t be swept away
by a raging flood.
You are my hiding place!
You protect me from trouble,
and you put songs in my heart
because you have saved me.

You said to me,
“I will point out the road
that you should follow.
I will be your teacher
and watch over you.
Don’t be stupid
like horses and mules
that must be led with ropes
to make them obey.”

10 All kinds of troubles
will strike the wicked,
but your kindness shields those
who trust you, Lord.
11 And so your good people
should celebrate and shout.

Footnotes:

  1. 32.6 whenever. . . sinned: Hebrew “at a time of finding only.”

Proverbs 8:27-32

27 I was there when the Lord
put the heavens in place
and stretched the sky
over the surface of the sea.
28 I was with him when he placed
the clouds in the sky
and created the springs
that fill the ocean.
29 I was there when he set
boundaries for the sea
to make it obey him,
and when he laid foundations
to support the earth.

30 I was right beside the Lord,
helping him plan and build.[a]
I made him happy each day,
and I was happy at his side.
31 I was pleased with his world
and pleased with its people.

32 Pay attention, my children!
Follow my advice,
and you will be happy.

Exodus 29:1-30:10, Matthew 26:14-46, Psalms 31:19-24, Proverbs 8:14-26

Today is February 9th. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I am Brian and it is great to be here with you for sure as we end another week. And yeah, they just…they just don’t slow down…they just kind of keep coming day after day and we have accumulated another week together. So, well done! We’ve been reading from the Amplified Bible this week and we’ll continue to do that today since this is still this week and then we’ll switch to something else tomorrow. We are gonna go back out to Mount Sinai where God is speaking to Moses and establishing the ground rules for a new culture that is being formed in the wilderness. Today, Exodus chapter 29 verse 1 through 30 verse 10.

Prayer:

Father, we thank You for Your word. Every day we basically thank You for Your word because it is a gift and we are grateful and we thank You for bringing us through another week and we thank You for all that You have spoken to us through Your word during this week. And today the voice of wisdom told us that she loves those who love her and those who seek her early and diligently will find her. Holy Spirit lead us on the paths of wisdom, that we might seek it early before there’s a problem and diligently so that we are living wise lives. We don’t propose that we can do this on our own. We need Your Holy Spirit’s guidance. So, come, we open ourselves to You. Lead us into all truth. Lead us into wisdom. Lead us on the narrow path that leads to life we pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.

I’ve mentioned, yeah, just a little over a week and we’ll be heading towards the land of the Bible. So, continue to pray over that. I mean when we do these kinds of trips I wouldn’t dare get on a plane without knowing…without knowing that we were surrounded by this community because this journey is for this community, it’s about this community. And, so, raising up a canopy of prayer and intercession over all that goes on in this kind of travel is so deeply appreciated and so comforting, it’s like a blanket around us when we’re so far in distant. And, so, thank you for your prayers for this upcoming journey.

If you want to partner with the Daily Audio Bible, you can do that at dailyaudiobible.com. There is a link, it is on the homepage and I thank you humbly and profoundly for your partnership. Community Prayer and Praise:

Good morning DAB family this is Walta the Burning Bush that will not be Devoured for the Glory of our God and King. I’m  __ this morning…that’s my 11-year-old knocking on the door. Anyway, I’m back. We’re getting ready for school…and…I’m here family. I’m gonna pray. __ I heard your prayer on the program a while ago and wrote them down, he’s sick and this is impacting his marriage. Father God I pray for his salvation and I’m praying for him. I pray oh God that you will give him a Job like restoration in the name of Jesus. Pray for Jackie from St. Louis. Jackie I heard your request, your prayer and I wrote it down as a person problem with financial __. And Father God I pray that You will restore what the __ has __ . I pray oh God that You will hold Jackie’s hand and guide her through this valley of the shadow of death Lord and take her to the other side in the name of Jesus. Protect You as His Name called praying for her dad’s salvation and restoration and relationship with her Father. Father God we know You are the ultimate Father and a relationship between a Father and a child is precious to Father. So, whatever’s causing the separation between the two Lord, I pray that You will remove it in the name of Jesus and restore it and God I pray that You will bind them together in Your love Father. God, I pray for the salvation of all our family members __ that don’t know God. Lord, we pray that You will reach out and call them by their name. So, Holy Spirit, call them to Yourself. In Jesus name. Amen.

Hi family, this is Kim from Kentucky and it’s Tuesday, February the 5th and I just listened and I’ve been wanting to call and several times over the past several weeks with people’s prayer requests and things and I’ve just not done it, but jazz, I just listened to your praise report passing your boards. I’m a pediatrician and when you called a while back asking for prayer, I mean, I know how hard that is and how much worry and ache there can be while waiting for those test results. And, so, I just praise God for that. And I thought about calling in because I have a son that is just out of PA school last month and I thank you for praying for those that are facing challenges because he failed his first test in physiology but I’m praying for a turnaround that he just rises up and continues to excel from here. And my daughter is studying for the MCATs, to take it in April to apply to med school. So, you know all about that. And a couple of days ago Brian talked about Moses and the battle and sitting on the rock and Aaron and Herr and just reminded me of this community. Jesus is our rock. Brian, reading out the word every day is what we sit on, it’s our foundation, it’s what we stand on. And we and Aaron and Herr __ and sometimes we’re the Moses in the battle and we need others to be our Aaron and Herr. And we’re a good community for that. Everybody that feels hopeless, listen to those Christmas program. Love you all. Bye.

Good morning Daily Audio Bible family or whatever time of the day it is where you’re at. This is Andrea Delane from Kentucky. Just wanted to say it’s so good to hear from you. I’ve been listening to your prayer requests and I just wanted to encourage you today if you’re lonely or if feel socially isolated. I read something the other day on Facebook from a neuroscientist, a __ neuroscientist and she wrote, “did you know that loneliness is one of the leading causes of death in our world today. Isolation is no joke. Loneliness actually increases the risk for premature mortality amongst all ages while one recent study indicates that social isolation and loneliness kill more people than obesity.” So, I just wanted to come on here because I know that this is definitely something that I have struggled with through the years and as I’m listening to a lot of the prayer requests I really feel the root of it is feeling alone, is feeling isolated. So, I just want to pray for you today, right now. I’ll just go ahead and pray for you. So, Father I just ask You right now…I just want to thank You, first of all, for Your friendship, that we can run to You, that You are closer than a brother, that You will never leave us or forsake us. That’s Your promise to those who believe and trust in You. And, so, Father I ask right now that the Holy Spirit would remind Your people that You are with them, but secondly that You would also like for us to reach out to one another and to visit the widows in their affliction, to visit the orphans. And Lord that the timing, time is so important even more important than money. And Father I ask that we would be able to have wisdom in knowing how to increase our relationship skills, being able to increase in developing deeper meaningful relationships so that we are not suffering in the needless thing of loneliness or isolation that affects our brains, that causes our mental health to decline. Father I pray a release of Your spirit and a release of Your wisdom in building new relationships all around us in Jesus name. Amen.

Hey everybody, this is Pelham from Birmingham apparently. So, now I’m looking for a place in Birmingham. Real quick getting that out there, that I need prayer for that. I’m calling because of you Prodigal. I’m calling cause your call played today. I couldn’t even get through your entire call in. I gotta go back and finish it. Dude! High-fives from Birmingham comin’ at you bro. You’re at war man. You’re at war man. He’s liftin’ you up though, he’s liftin’ us all up and the wheel turns. Man and we forget where we are often, don’t we? Woo. This last weekend I was in darker place than I thought I could go, more lonely, more afraid, more separated from my family, and isolated from my friends than I’d ever been, like out on a branch. And that’s all he wants to do is isolate us so he can get us alone with our thoughts and get us to turn against ourselves. We start agreeing to things that would never agree with if Jesus was standing right there next to us. And sometimes we forget that He’s always standing there. Sometimes we need an actual person to stand there. Prodigal, good job man. I’m salutin’ you over here. Guys pray for Italian ice because I’m gonna be the Italian Ice man apparently. __ Italian Ice wants to hire me full-time to run his truck in Birmingham, which is really good timing. I don’t know how that’s gonna work. Help! I’m calling out. I need help. Pelham needs help. I need prayer. Thank you.

Hey family this is Josh from Indiana a.k.a. Employed by God. I just want to call in and give a quick encouragement. One of the things that God’s been dealing with me on is sometimes having the feeling that I’ve missed my calling but that I’m reminded that we’re not bigger than God. He knew when he called you exactly the path that you would take. He knows how he will fulfill your calling. So, remember that promise and begin working towards your calling today.

Exodus 29:1-30:10

Consecration of the Priests

29 “This is what you shall do to consecrate Aaron and his sons so that they may serve Me as priests: take one young bull and two rams, without blemish, and unleavened bread and unleavened cakes mixed with oil, and unleavened wafers spread with oil; you shall make them of fine wheat flour. You shall put them in one basket, and present them in the basket along with the bull and the two rams. Then bring Aaron and his sons to the doorway of the Tent of Meeting [out where the basin is] and wash them with water. Then you shall take the garments, and put on Aaron the tunic and the robe of the ephod and the ephod and the breastpiece, and wrap him with the skillfully woven sash of the ephod; and you shall put the turban on his head and put the holy crown on the turban. Then you shall take the anointing oil and pour it on his head and anoint him. You shall bring his sons and put tunics on them. And you shall wrap them with sashes, Aaron and his sons, and put the [ornamental] caps on them; and the priest’s office shall be theirs by a perpetual statute. So you shall ordain Aaron and his sons.

The Sacrifices

10 “Then you shall bring the bull before the Tent of Meeting, and Aaron and his sons shall [a]lay their hands on the bull’s head. 11 Then you shall kill the bull before the Lord by the doorway of the Tent of Meeting. 12 And you shall take some of the blood of the bull and with your finger put it on the horns of the altar [of burnt offering], and you shall pour out the remainder of the blood at the base of the altar. 13 You shall take all the fat that covers the intestines and the lobe of the liver, and the two kidneys and the fat that is on them, and offer them up in smoke on the altar. 14 But the meat of the bull, its hide, and the contents of its intestines you shall burn in the fire outside the camp; it is a sin offering.(A)

15 “And you shall take one of the rams, and Aaron and his sons shall lay their hands on the head of the ram; 16 then you shall kill the ram and you shall take its blood and sprinkle it around the altar [of burnt offering]. 17 Then you shall cut the ram into pieces, and wash its intestines and legs, and place them with its pieces and its head, 18 and you shall burn the whole ram on the altar. It is a burnt offering to the Lord: it is a sweet and soothing aroma, an offering by fire to the Lord.

19 “Then you shall take the other ram, and Aaron and his sons shall lay their hands on the head of the ram. 20 Then you shall kill the ram, and take some of its blood and put it on the tip of the right ears of Aaron and his sons and on the thumbs of their right hands and on the big toes of their right feet, and sprinkle the [rest of the] blood around on the altar [of burnt offering]. 21 Then you shall take some of the blood that is on the altar and some of the anointing oil, and sprinkle it on Aaron and his garments and on his sons and their garments. Now Aaron and his garments and his sons and their garments shall be consecrated (dedicated, made holy, declared sacred for God’s purpose).

22 “You shall also take the fat of the ram, the fat tail, the fat that covers the intestines, the lobe of the liver, the two kidneys with the fat that is on them, and the right thigh; (for it is a ram of ordination), 23 and one loaf of bread and one cake of oiled bread and one wafer out of the basket of the unleavened bread that is before the Lord; 24 and you shall put all these in the hands of Aaron and his sons, and wave them as a [b]wave offering before the Lord. 25 Then you shall take them from their hands, add them to the burnt offering, and burn them on the altar for a sweet and soothing aroma before the Lord; it is an offering by fire to the Lord.

26 “Then you shall take the breast of the ram of Aaron’s ordination, and wave it as a wave offering before the Lord; and it shall be your (Moses) portion. 27 You shall consecrate the waved breast offering [of the ram] used in the ordination and the waved thigh offering of the priests’ portion, since it is [a contribution] for Aaron and for his sons. 28 It shall be for Aaron and his sons as their due portion from the Israelites forever, for it is a [c]heave offering. It shall be a heave offering to the Lord from the Israelites from the sacrifices of their peace offerings.

29 “The holy garments of Aaron shall be for his sons after him, to be anointed and ordained in them. 30 That son who is [high] priest in his place shall put them on [each day for] seven days when he comes into the Tent of Meeting to minister in the Holy Place.

Food of the Priests

31 “You shall take the ram of the ordination and boil its meat in a holy place. 32 Aaron and his sons shall eat the meat of the ram and the bread in the basket, at the doorway of the Tent of Meeting. 33 They shall eat those things by which atonement was made at their ordination and consecration; but a layman shall not eat them, because they are holy [that is, set apart to the worship of God]. 34 And if any of the meat of ordination or the bread remains until morning, you shall burn it in the fire; it shall not be eaten, because it is holy.

35 “So you shall do to Aaron and to his sons in accordance with all I have commanded you; during seven days you are to ordain them. 36 You shall offer a bull every day as a sin offering for atonement. You shall cleanse the altar from sin when you make atonement for it, and you shall anoint it to consecrate it [for God’s sacred purpose]. 37 For seven days you shall make atonement for the altar [of burnt offering] and consecrate it; then the altar shall be most holy. Whatever touches the altar must be holy (set apart for God’s service).

38 “Now this is what you shall offer on the altar: two one year old lambs shall be offered each day, continuously. 39 One lamb you shall offer in the morning and the other lamb [d]at twilight; 40 and with the one lamb there shall be one-tenth of a measure of fine flour mixed with one-fourth of a hin of beaten [olive] oil, and one-fourth of a hin of wine for a drink offering [to be poured out]. 41 And the other lamb you shall offer at twilight, and do with it as with the grain offering of the morning and with the drink offering, for a sweet and soothing aroma [to appease God], an offering by fire to the Lord. 42 This will be a continual burnt offering throughout your generations at the doorway of the Tent of Meeting before the Lord, where I will meet with you, to speak to you there. 43 There I will meet with the Israelites, and the Tent of Meeting shall be [e]sanctified by My glory [the [f]Shekinah, God’s dwelling presence]. 44 I will sanctify the Tent of Meeting and the altar [of burnt offering]; also I will sanctify Aaron and his sons to serve as priests to Me. 45 I will dwell among the sons of Israel and be their God. 46 They shall know [from personal experience] and acknowledge that I am the Lord their God who brought them out of the land of Egypt so that I might dwell among them; I am the Lord their God.

The Altar of Incense

30 “You shall make an altar upon which to burn incense; you shall make it of acacia wood. It shall be a cubit long and a cubit wide. It shall be square and it shall be two cubits high. Its horns of one piece with it. You shall overlay it with pure gold, its top and its sides all around, and its horns; and you shall make a gold molding all around it. You shall make two gold rings under its molding, make them on the two side walls—on opposite sides—they shall be holders for the poles with which to carry it. You shall make the poles of acacia wood overlaid with gold. You shall put the altar of incense [in the Holy Place] in front and outside of the veil that screens the ark of the [g]Testimony, before the mercy seat that is over the Testimony, where I will meet with you. Aaron shall burn sweet and fragrant incense on it; he shall burn it every morning when he trims and tends the lamps.(B) When Aaron sets up the lamps at twilight, he shall burn incense, a perpetual incense before the Lord throughout your generations. You shall not offer any strange incense on this altar, or burnt offering or meal offering; you shall not pour out a drink offering on it. 10 Once a year Aaron shall make atonement [for sin] on its horns. He shall make atonement on it with the blood of the sin offering of atonement once a year throughout your generations. It is most holy to the Lord.”

Footnotes:

  1. Exodus 29:10 By laying his hands on the head of the sacrifice the offerer identified himself with it and through its death it became an atonement or covering for his sin. Because the sacrifice “covered” his sin it placed the offerer in a right relationship with God, just as later under the new covenant the perfection and sacrifice of the Christ would cover (atone for) the imperfection and sin of those who identified with Him and accepted Him as Savior.
  2. Exodus 29:24 The wave (undulation, wavelike) offering and the heave (lifted up, raised) offering were named after their manner of presentation. These were either voluntary gifts or contributions required for a specific religious purpose such as the atonement offering. It was understood that God received these offerings and then designated them for a religious purpose such as the support of the priests and their families, or the preparation and maintenance of the tabernacle.
  3. Exodus 29:28 See note v 24.
  4. Exodus 29:39 See note 12:6.
  5. Exodus 29:43 Only God can sanctify (set apart) something for His divine purpose. Man can consecrate (dedicate) something as sacred, that is, declare it separated from secular use.
  6. Exodus 29:43 This Hebrew word is not found in the Bible, but was used by the rabbis to describe the presence of God. Its basic meaning is “royal residence.” Among other things, the rabbis said that the Shekinah is present where ten people pray together, or where three people are sitting as a court of judges.
  7. Exodus 30:6 This is a reference to the two stone tablets inscribed by God that will be given to Moses (31:18).

Matthew 26:14-46

Judas’ Bargain

14 Then one of the twelve [disciples], who was called Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests 15 and said, “What are you willing to give me if I hand Jesus over to you?” And they weighed out [a]thirty pieces of silver.(A) 16 And from that moment Judas began looking for an opportune time to betray Jesus.(B)

17 Now on the first day of [b]Unleavened Bread (Passover Week) the disciples came to Jesus and asked, “Where do You want us to prepare for You to eat the Passover?”(C) 18 He said, “Go into the city to [c]a certain man, and say to him, ‘The Teacher says, “My time [to suffer and atone for sin] is near; I am to keep the Passover at your house with My disciples.”’” 19 [Accordingly] the disciples did as Jesus had directed them, and they prepared the Passover.(D)

The Last Passover

20 When evening came, Jesus was reclining at the table with the twelve disciples.(E) 21 And as they were eating, He said, “I assure you and most solemnly say to you that one of you will betray Me.” 22 Being deeply grieved and extremely distressed, each one of them began to say to Him, “Surely not I, Lord?” 23 Jesus answered, “He who has dipped his hand in the bowl with Me [as a [d]pretense of friendship] will betray Me. 24 The Son of Man is to go [to the cross], just as it is written [in Scripture] of Him; but woe (judgment is coming) to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been good for that man if he had never been born.”(F) 25 And Judas, the betrayer, said, “Surely it is not I, Rabbi?” Jesus said to him, [e]You have said it yourself.”

The Lord’s Supper Instituted

26 Now as they were eating Jesus took bread, and after [f]blessing it, He broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, “Take, eat; this is My body.”(G) 27 And when He had taken a cup and [g]given thanks, He gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you; 28 for this is My blood of the [new and better] covenant, which [ratifies the agreement and] is being poured out for many [as a [h]substitutionary atonement] for the forgiveness of sins.(H) 29 But I say to you, I will not drink of this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in My Father’s kingdom.”

30 After singing a [i]hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.

31 Then Jesus said to them, “You will all fall away because of Me this night [disillusioned about Me, confused, and some even ashamed of Me], for it is written [in the Scriptures], I will strike the Shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.’(I) 32 But after I am raised [to life], I will go ahead of you [leading the way] to Galilee.” 33 Peter replied to Him, “Though they all fall away because of You [and doubt and disown You], I will never fall away!”(J) 34 Jesus said to him, “I assure you and most solemnly say to you, this night, before a rooster crows, you will [completely] deny Me three times.” 35 Peter said to Jesus, “Even if I have to die with You, I will not deny You!” And all the disciples said the same thing.

The Garden of Gethsemane

36 Then Jesus came with them to a place called [j]Gethsemane (olive-press), and He told His disciples, “Sit here while I go over there and pray.”(K) 37 And taking with Him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee [James and John], He began to be grieved and greatly distressed. 38 Then He said to them, “My soul is deeply grieved, so that I am almost dying of sorrow. Stay here and stay awake and keep watch with Me.”

39 And after going a little farther, He fell face down and prayed, saying, “My Father, if it is possible [that is, consistent with Your will], let this cup [k]pass from Me; yet not as I will, but as You will.” 40 And He came to the disciples and found them sleeping, and said to Peter, “So, you men could not stay awake and keep watch with Me for one hour? 41 Keep actively watching and praying that you may not come into temptation; the spirit is willing, but the [l]body is weak.”

42 He went away a second time and prayed, saying, “My Father, if this cannot pass away unless I drink it, Your will be done.” 43 Again He came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy. 44 So, leaving them again, He went away and prayed for the third time, saying the same words once more. 45 Then He returned to the disciples and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? Listen, [m]the hour [of My sacrifice] is at hand and the Son of Man is being betrayed into the hands of sinners [whose way and nature is to oppose God]. 46 Get up, let us go. Look, My betrayer is near!”

Footnotes:

  1. Matthew 26:15 Probably about a month’s wages for a laborer.
  2. Matthew 26:17 This remembrance lasted eight days. The Passover lambs were selected on the tenth of Nisan (March/April) and sacrificed on the fourteenth of Nisan (the first day of the feast). The Passover meal was eaten that same night (15 Nisan). This was immediately followed by the Feast of Unleavened Bread (15-21 Nisan). The terms “Passover” and “The Feast of Unleavened Bread” were used interchangeably.
  3. Matthew 26:18 Tradition identifies this man as Mark’s father.
  4. Matthew 26:23 In the ancient culture sharing a meal in this way was a confirmation of friendship and goodwill.
  5. Matthew 26:25 “You” is emphatic in the Greek text.
  6. Matthew 26:26 The customary blessing spoken over the bread in the Passover meal was, “Blessed are you, O Lord our God, King of the universe, who brings forth bread from the earth.”
  7. Matthew 26:27 Giving thanks consisted of two benedictions, one over the wine (“Blessed are You, Lord our God, who has created the fruit of the vine!”) and one for the return of the Feast Day with all it implied, as well as being allowed once more to witness it.
  8. Matthew 26:28 By laying his hands on the head of the sacrifice the one offering the sacrifice identified himself with it and through its death it became an atonement or covering for his sin. Because the unblemished sacrifice “covered” his sin, it placed the one offering the sacrifice in a right relationship with God, just as later under the new covenant the perfection and sacrifice of Christ would cover (atone for) the imperfection and sin of those who identified with Him and accepted Him as Savior.
  9. Matthew 26:30 The Hallel psalms (113-118) were sung at Passover.
  10. Matthew 26:36 This beautiful garden filled with now ancient olive trees still exists.
  11. Matthew 26:39 Jesus’ request was heard (Heb 5:7), and it is unlikely that He asked to avoid the cross. The object of His request cannot be known with certainty, but some think that He was asking for resurrection following His death. In that case, the “cup” would represent His body’s remaining in the grave, which would be contrary to the plan of salvation and prophecy regarding His resurrection (Ps 16:10; cf Acts 2:24-27). Others think that the request related to the time of separation from the Father, which He would have to endure in death (see 27:46). However, the sense of Heb 5:7 could be that the Father listened to Him intently and comforted Him, while not sparing His Son the suffering which He had destined for Him.
  12. Matthew 26:41 Lit flesh.
  13. Matthew 26:45 The time had come for Jesus’ atoning sacrificial death which would provide the way of salvation for believers.

Psalm 31:19-24

19
How great is Your goodness,
Which You have stored up for those who [reverently] fear You,
Which You have prepared for those who take refuge in You,
[a]Before the sons of man!
20
In the secret place of Your presence You hide them from the plots and conspiracies of man;
You keep them secretly in a shelter (pavilion) from the strife of tongues.
21
Blessed be the Lord,
For He has shown His marvelous favor and lovingkindness to me [when I was assailed] in a besieged city.
22
As for me, I said in my alarm,
“I am cut off from Your eyes.”
Nevertheless You heard the voice of my supplications (specific requests)
When I cried to You [for help].

23
O love the Lord, all you His godly ones!
The Lord preserves the faithful [those with moral and spiritual integrity]
And fully repays the [self-righteousness of the] arrogant.
24
Be strong and let your hearts take courage,
All you who wait for and confidently expect the Lord.
