1 Samuel 2:22-4

Eli’s Family Condemned

22 Now, Eli was very old, and he had heard everything that his sons were doing to all Israel and that they were sleeping with the women who served at the gate of the tent of meeting. 23 So he asked them, “Why are you doing such things? I hear about your wicked ways from all these people. 24 Sons, the report that I hear the people of the Lord spreading isn’t good! 25 If one person sins against another, God will take care of him. However, when a person sins against the Lord, who will pray for him?” But they wouldn’t listen to their father’s warning—the Lord wanted to kill them.

26 The boy Samuel continued to grow and gained the favor of the Lord and the people.

27 Then a man of God came to Eli and said to him, “This is what the Lord says: I revealed myself to your ancestors when they were under Pharaoh’s control in Egypt. 28 I chose one of your ancestors out of all the tribes of Israel to serve as my priest, to sacrifice burnt offerings on my altar, to burn incense, and to wear the ephod in my presence. And I gave your ancestors the right to keep portions of the sacrifices that the people of Israel burned on the altar. 29 Why do you show no respect for my sacrifices and grain offerings that I have commanded people to make in my dwelling place? Why do you honor your sons more than me by making yourselves fat on the best of all the sacrifices offered by my people Israel?

30 “Therefore, the Lord God of Israel declares: I certainly thought that your family and your father’s family would always live in my presence.

“But now the Lord declares: I promise that I will honor those who honor me, and those who despise me will be considered insignificant. 31 The time is coming when I will break your strength and the strength of your father’s house so that no one will grow old in your family. 32 You will see distress in my dwelling place. In spite of the good that I do for Israel, no one in your family will live to an old age. 33 Any man in your family whom I do not remove from my altar will have his eyes fail, and he[a] will be heartbroken. And all your descendants will die in the prime of life. 34 What is going to happen to your two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, will be a sign to you: Both of them will die on the same day. 35 Then I will appoint a faithful priest to serve me. He will do everything I want him to do. I will give him faithful descendants, and he will always live as my anointed one. 36 Then anyone who is left from your household will bow down in front of him to get a coin or a loaf of bread and say, ‘Please appoint me to one of the priestly classes so that I may eat a piece of bread.’”

The Lord Calls Samuel

The boy Samuel was serving the Lord under Eli. In those days a prophecy from the Lord was rare; visions were infrequent. One night Eli was lying down in his room. His eyesight had begun to fail so that he couldn’t see well. The lamp in God’s temple[b] hadn’t gone out yet, and Samuel was asleep in the temple of the Lord where the ark of God was kept.

Then the Lord called Samuel. “Here I am,” Samuel responded. He ran to Eli and said, “Here I am. You called me.”

“I didn’t call you,” Eli replied. “Go back to bed.” So Samuel went back and lay down.

The Lord called Samuel again. Samuel got up, went to Eli, and said, “Here I am. You called me.”

“I didn’t call you, son,” he responded. “Go back to bed.” Samuel had no experience with the Lord, because the Lord’s word had not yet been revealed to him.

The Lord called Samuel a third time. Samuel got up, went to Eli, and said, “Here I am. You called me.”

Then Eli realized that the Lord was calling the boy. “Go, lie down,” Eli told Samuel. “When he calls you, say, ‘Speak, Lord. I’m listening.’” So Samuel went and lay down in his room.

10 The Lord came and stood there. He called as he had called the other times: “Samuel! Samuel!” And Samuel replied, “Speak. I’m listening.”

11 Then the Lord said to Samuel, “I am going to do something in Israel that will make the ears of everyone who hears it ring. 12 On that day I am going to do to Eli and his family everything I said from beginning to end. 13 I told him that I would hand down a permanent judgment against his household because he knew about his sons’ sin—that they were cursing God[c]—but he didn’t try to stop them. 14 That is why I have taken an oath concerning Eli’s family line: No offering or sacrifice will ever be able to make peace for the sins that Eli’s family committed.”

15 Samuel remained in bed until morning. Then he opened the doors of the Lord’s house. But Samuel was afraid to tell Eli about the vision.

16 Then Eli called Samuel. “Samuel, my son!” he said.

“Here I am,” he responded.

17 “What did the Lord tell you?” he asked. “Please don’t hide anything from me. May God strike you dead if you hide anything he told you from me.”

18 So Samuel told Eli everything.

Eli replied, “He is the Lord. May he do what he thinks is right.”

19 Samuel grew up. The Lord was with him and didn’t let any of his words go unfulfilled. 20 All Israel from Dan to Beersheba knew Samuel was the Lord’s appointed prophet. 21 The Lord continued to appear in Shiloh, since the Lord revealed himself to Samuel in Shiloh through the Lord’s word. And Samuel spoke to all Israel.[d]

The Army Sends for the Ark

Israel went to fight against the Philistines and camped near Ebenezer while the Philistines camped at Aphek. The Philistines organized their troops to meet Israel in battle. As the battle spread,[e] the Philistines defeated Israel and killed about 4,000 soldiers in the field.

When the troops came back to the camp, the leaders of Israel asked, “Why has the Lord used the Philistines to defeat us today? Let’s get the ark of the Lord’s promise from Shiloh so that he may be with us and save us from our enemies.” The troops sent some men who brought back the ark of the promise of the Lord of Armies—who is enthroned over the angels.[f] Eli’s two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, came along with God’s ark. When the Lord’s ark came into the camp, all Israel shouted so loudly that the earth rang with echoes.

As the Philistines heard the noise, they asked, “What’s all this shouting in the Hebrew camp?” The Philistines found out that the Lord’s ark had come into the camp. Then they were frightened and said, “A god has come into their camp.” They also said, “Oh no! Nothing like this has ever happened before. We’re in trouble now! Who can save us from the power of these mighty gods? These are the gods who struck the Egyptians with every kind of plague in the desert. Be strong, Philistines, and act like men, or else you will serve the Hebrews as they served you. Act like men and fight.”

The Ark Captured

10 The Philistines fought and defeated Israel. Every Israelite soldier fled to his tent. It was a major defeat in which 30,000 Israelite foot soldiers died. 11 The ark of God was captured. Both of Eli’s sons, Hophni and Phinehas, died.

12 A man from the tribe of Benjamin ran from the front line of the battle. He went to Shiloh that day with his clothes torn and dirt on his head. [g] 13 When he arrived, Eli was sitting on a chair beside the road, watching. He was worried about the ark of God. The man went into the city to tell the news. The whole city cried out. 14 Hearing the cry, Eli asked, “What is this commotion?” So the man went quickly to tell Eli the news. 15 (Eli was 98 years old, and his eyesight had failed so that he couldn’t see.)

16 The man told Eli, “I’m the one who came from the battle. I fled from the front line today.”

“What happened, son?” Eli asked.

17 “Israel fled from the Philistines,” the messenger answered. “Our troops suffered heavy casualties. Your two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, also are dead, and the ark of God has been captured.”

18 When the messenger mentioned the ark of God, Eli fell from his chair backwards toward the gate. He broke his neck, and he died. (The man was old and heavy.) He had judged[h] Israel for 40 years.

19 His daughter-in-law, Phinehas’ wife, was pregnant. When she heard the news that the ark of God had been captured and her father-in-law and her husband were dead, she went into labor prematurely and gave birth to a son. 20 As she was dying, the women helping her said, “Don’t be afraid. You’ve given birth to a son.” But she didn’t answer or pay attention.

21 She called the boy Ichabod [No Glory], saying, “Israel’s glory is gone,” because the ark of God had been captured and because her father-in-law and her husband died. 22 “Israel’s glory is gone because the ark of God has been captured,” she said.

John 5:24-47

24 I can guarantee this truth: Those who listen to what I say and believe in the one who sent me will have eternal life. They won’t be judged because they have already passed from death to life.

25 “I can guarantee this truth: A time is coming (and is now here) when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God and those who respond to it will live. 26 The Father is the source of life, and he has enabled the Son to be the source of life too.

27 “He has also given the Son authority to pass judgment because he is the Son of Man. [a] 28 Don’t be surprised at what I’ve just said. A time is coming when all the dead will hear his voice, 29 and they will come out of their tombs. Those who have done good will come back to life and live. But those who have done evil will come back to life and will be judged. 30 I can’t do anything on my own. As I listen to the Father, I make my judgments. My judgments are right because I don’t try to do what I want but what the one who sent me wants.

31 “If I testify on my own behalf, what I say isn’t true. 32 Someone else testifies on my behalf, and I know that what he says about me is true. 33 You sent people to John the Baptizer, and he testified to the truth. 34 But I don’t depend on human testimony. I’m telling you this to save you. 35 John was a lamp that gave off brilliant light. For a time you enjoyed the pleasure of his light. 36 But I have something that testifies more favorably on my behalf than John’s testimony. The tasks that the Father gave me to carry out, these tasks which I perform, testify on my behalf. They prove that the Father has sent me. 37 The Father who sent me testifies on my behalf. You have never heard his voice, and you have never seen his form. 38 So you don’t have the Father’s message within you, because you don’t believe in the person he has sent. 39 You study the Scriptures in detail because you think you have the source of eternal life in them. These Scriptures testify on my behalf. 40 Yet, you don’t want to come to me to get eternal life.

41 “I don’t accept praise from humans. 42 But I know what kind of people you are. You don’t have any love for God. 43 I have come with the authority my Father has given me, but you don’t accept me. If someone else comes with his own authority, you will accept him. 44 How can you believe when you accept each other’s praise and don’t look for the praise that comes from the only God?

45 “Don’t think that I will accuse you in the presence of the Father. Moses, the one you trust, is already accusing you. 46 If you really believed Moses, you would believe me. Moses wrote about me. 47 If you don’t believe what Moses wrote, how will you ever believe what I say?”

Footnotes:

  1. John 5:28 “Son of Man” is a name Jesus called himself to show that he was not only God’s Son but also human.

Psalm 106:1-12

Psalm 106

Hallelujah!

Give thanks to the Lord because he is good,
because his mercy endures forever.
Who can speak about all the mighty things the Lord has done?
Who can announce all the things for which he is worthy of praise?
Blessed are those who defend justice
and do what is right at all times.

Remember me, O Lord, when you show favor to your people.
Come to help me with your salvation
so that I may see the prosperity of your chosen ones,
find joy in our people’s happiness,
and brag with the people who belong to you.

We have sinned, and so did our ancestors.
We have done wrong.
We are guilty.
When our ancestors were in Egypt,
they gave no thought to your miracles.
They did not remember your numerous acts of mercy,
so they rebelled at the sea, the Red Sea.

He saved them because of his reputation
so that he could make his mighty power known.
He angrily commanded the Red Sea, and it dried up.
He led them through deep water as though it were a desert.
10 He rescued them from the power of the one who hated them.
He rescued them from the enemy.
11 Water covered their adversaries.
Not one Egyptian survived.
12 Then our ancestors believed what he said.
They sang his praise.

Proverbs 14:30-31

but jealousy is like bone cancer.
31 Whoever oppresses the poor insults his maker,
but whoever is kind to the needy honors him.

1 Samuel 1:1-2:21 ~ John 5:1-23 ~ Psalm 105:37-45 ~ Proverbs 14:28-29

Today is May 7th.  Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible.  I’m Brian. It’s good to be here with you. So, yeah, threshold, the threshold of a shiny new week out in front of us that we get to launch into today and the threshold of a brand new book as we go into this new week.  Today we’ll begin the first book of Samuel.

Introduction of a New Book (Old Testament)

So just kind of flying over that, the books of 1 and then 2 Samuel were not authored by the prophet Samuel.  It is unclear who the author is.  It seems historically that they were written somewhere where the kingdom divided.  We talked about that as a spoiler alert just recently.  So somewhere when that actually happened is probably when the books of Samuel were written. As we go forward, we’ll see that the children of Israel, one nation will separate as they continue to fall away from God, fall away from each other.  They will separate into two kingdoms and it seems like during the divided kingdom is when these books were written.  A good number of scholars believe that the material was originally recorded by three prophets of Israel, Samuel, Nathan and Gad.

1 and 2 Samuel were both written in Hebrew and they were not written as separate texts.  1 and 2 Samuel and then 1 and 2 Kings were all grouped together as one continuous text. When the Old Testament was translated into Greek, which is called the Septuagint, the texts were divided into four books known as the books of the kingdoms.  So when the Old Testament was translated into Latin (not to confound this, that is called the Vulgate), they became the books of the Kings.  These texts were then known as 1, 2, 3 and 4 Kings. Now that we’re all confused, let’s just kind of keep going.  What is now known as 1 and 2 Samuel was actually 1 and 2 Kings in the Latin translations and what we now know as 1 and 2 Kings was known as 3 and 4 Kings during that era.  This all changed to the accepted books of Samuel and Kings by those translators who created the King James Bible in 1611.

Samuel was a very influential person.  He was the final judge of Israel.  So Samson is the final judge in the book of judges but Samuel was the last one. He was a judge, but he was also a prophet of God and served before the Lord as priest.  During his life, Israel had pretty much fallen into anarchy. Everyone was doing what they wanted, whatever was right in their own eyes.  Samuel steps up as a prophet and that begins to alleviate some of the anarchy because Samuel is speaking directly for God.  This is something that the children of Israel are more accustomed to. Israel has never had a king but they want one and Samuel will introduce kingship into the civilization and culture of Israel.  The first king we’ll meet, of course, is King Saul, the first king of Israel and then we’ll meet David who will later become king.  King Saul and David have a terrible conflict that we’ll get to know about.

God warns the children of Israel not to take a king to rule over them but, as usual, we know the rhythm by now and ironically, as we get to know the rhythm of the children of Israel, we also have to look really hard in the mirror because we so often find ourselves.  We can read stories in the children of Israel’s existence and think how could they do that?  Until we look at ourselves, and then we realize this is telling our story.  This is reading our heart.

So God doesn’t want them to have a king but, as usual, they choose their own way and introduce kings into their culture.  So we see spiritual guidance coming from the prophets and national guidance coming from the king.  But throughout the entire book, what is really happening here is that a manmade kingdom is being established, the kingdom of Israel, and it will from this point on be looked at like that.

So, off we go, launching our way into the first book of Samuel, chapter 1, verse 1 through 2, verse 21.  And this week we’ll read from the God’s Word translation.

Prayer

Father, we thank you for your word.  We thank you for this community centered around this rhythm of being in your word every day together and we thank you for all that you have done.  As we begin to turn the page now and move into a new era in the children of Israel’s existence and life, we invite you into that in advance.  Continue to speak to us through your word.  Continue to disrupt us and prick our hearts.  Continue to comfort and guide us.  We need you in and among us.  We need you in everything that we do and say, every thought, word and deed.  So we invite you into this brand new week that you’ve given us and we give it to you right now.  We look forward to living into it with you and all that you will lead and direct us to do this week.  Come Holy Spirit, we pray.  In Jesus’ name, amen.

Community Prayer Requests and Praise Reports

Hi family.  This is Salvation is Mine in San Leandro, CA.  I know it has been a minute since I called in, but I’ve been listening to the podcasts all last week and this week and something has struck me.  There have been so many people calling in and apologizing to have to call in for prayer.  Never, ever, my brothers and sisters, apologize for needing prayer, for reaching out to your family.  God is there for you.  We are there for you, so please don’t apologize.  Even if you think that a prayer is silly, obviously it is not silly to you because you’re the one thinking about it and calling in about it. There are all kinds of things that we can pray for for each other and any prayer request, any good prayer request or good outcome you’re looking for with God answering your prayers is never going to be a silly prayer.  So never, ever, ever apologize for reaching out to your family for those who are here for you and want to pray for you.  There are so many people that don’t call and are just listeners.  I heard a lot of people, there was like one person who was a 7-year listener and it was the first time they ever called in. Don’t be afraid to call in.  Don’t be embarrassed to call in.  We’re not ashamed of God.  We’re not ashamed that he loves us and we’re not ashamed that we love him.  So please reach out to us.  You don’t have to leave your name.  You don’t have to leave your location.  Just leave your prayer and we as DAB’ers, as Christians in Christ, as those who love each other, we will definitely pray for you.  God bless you family.  I hope you have a great rest of your week.  Take care. Bye-bye.

Hi everyone.  My name is Kate and I’m calling from Finland.  I want to share really a short testimony, something that happened to me a couple of months ago.  I was listening to some worship music and a song came on that really touched my heart and I closed my eyes and I saw in front of me a group of maybe angels, I’m not quite sure, but I didn’t hear them but I could feel them worshiping and I realized that God was there and I didn’t see his face or his shape but just saw his amazing light.  Then my spirit started worshiping too.  And then I realized that God was speaking to me.  I didn’t hear his voice but I just felt him speaking straight to my heart into some places that I had really been feeling broken and burdened and heavy and like just twisted and out of alignment and I felt him touching all of that, speaking right to all of that and putting it all back into place and putting me back into alignment.  I just wanted to share that really short version of this amazing experience with all of you because it is not like I now a few months after that walk around every day feeling perfectly in alignment and feeling perfectly whole like I did when I felt the presence of God in this glorious experience, but I know now that that is how God sees me.  I know that God sees me whole.  I just hope that might encourage some one of you out there, that God sees you right where you are and that he doesn’t see you the way that you see yourself.

Hi there my DAB friends.  It’s Bromwell calling from London in the UK.  Haven’t called in for a while.  I’m a little behind on the Daily Audio Bible podcasts.  Just now I’m going through the 27th and the 29th prayer requests. Specifically I just want to say I’m praying for you guys, prayer requests from 2015, and it is good to hear from you, Kathleen M. from Toowoomba, Australia.  I keep praying for you as well as Mark S. and the other guy’s whose prayer requests go way back and also to say more recent prayer requests such as Annette A., Jake from Maryland, __ from Colorado, I hear you and I keep praying for you guys, that God will take you through these tough moments, tough days that you’re going through.  I can’t imagine the pain that you have to go through, guys, but I know that our God is great and God is powerful.  Our God answers prayers that you’ll be victorious.  So hang in there, __.  Well done for your daughter’s graduation coming up.  I’ll be praying for your son who is going to South Korea as well as your son who has been diagnosed with brain tumor and Jake, for your marriage.  Keep the good work going, guys.  Keep praying and supporting each other.  God bless you.  Thank you. Bye-bye.

Hello Daily Audio Bible family.  My name is Leonard from Brooklyn and I’m Saved by Grace.  I’m calling because a truth I recently found that I hope and pray will become real through you guys out there, for all of us is the fact that we’re fighting from victory.  We’re not fighting for victory.  We all have many trials.  We face a lot of things in this life, but Jesus has provided for all of them.  He has made it possible for us to be successful through all of them.  We should just rejoice even as we are tested because God gives us clear guidance and he is there to help us.  He wants to help us.  He is constantly helping us.  So we are fighting from victory, not for victory.  We are all more than conquerors through Jesus Christ who loves us.  Thank you guys.  God bless you.  Be encouraged.  Bye-bye.

Hi family.  This is Francine from Tennessee.  I got back from Georgia taking care of my mom yesterday and I continue to need your prayers for her care and our wisdom for her care.  It’s 2 o’clock and so I’m praying with all of you in honor of the prayers that David in Kansas has been praying at 2 o’clock and he taught me, God taught me through him how to pray for all of us as a group, as a family.  And so I pray for him, for his pain, that the Lord would ease it, and I pray for Chante on her job, that the Lord would give peace and wisdom and joy and a deep awareness of his presence.  Father, thank you for my family and the Daily Audio Bible.  Thank you for each and every one of us and each and every cry that we make to you and to each other and the prayers that we pray, Lord.  I lift all of us to you for our healing and I lift all of us to you for wisdom and knowledge and strength and the joy of your presence and a deeper awareness of your presence.  Lord, in Psalms you said you speak the word and we are healed.  You know what each of us needs and you know what each of us seeks you and know you are the answer to every question, problem, worry, fret, or fear that we have and we lift this whole community up to you for what all we need and I pray that you would touch us and as you said I believe in James that our souls would prosper and that we would be in good health and that is my prayer, that we would be in good health even as souls prosper.  Thank you for Brian and Jill and thank you for each one who prays and thank you for each one who calls and thank you for each of us who listens and prays and thank you for even those of us who don’t call yet.  Lord, we love you, we thank you, and we feel closer together because of what you do through the prayers of your people.  We lift it to you.  In Jesus’ name we pray, amen.

The Daily Audio Bible Reading for Sunday May 7, 2017 (NIV)

1 Samuel 1:1-2:21

Samuel’s Birth

There was a man named Elkanah from Ramathaim Zophim in the mountains of Ephraim. He was the son of Jeroham, grandson of Elihu, great-grandson of Tohu, whose father was Zuph from the tribe of Ephraim. Elkanah had two wives, one named Hannah, the other Peninnah. Peninnah had children, but Hannah had none. Every year this man would go from his own city to worship and sacrifice to the Lord of Armies at Shiloh. Eli’s two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, served there as priests of the Lord.

Whenever Elkanah offered a sacrifice, he would give portions of it to his wife Peninnah and all her sons and daughters. He would also give one portion to Hannah because he loved her, even though the Lord had kept her from having children. Because the Lord had made her unable to have children, her rival Peninnah tormented her endlessly in order to make her miserable. This happened year after year. Whenever Hannah went to the Lord’s house, Peninnah would make her miserable, and Hannah would cry and not eat. Her husband Elkanah would ask her, “Hannah, why are you crying? Why haven’t you eaten? Why are you so downhearted? Don’t I mean more to you than ten sons?”

One day, after Hannah had something to eat and drink in Shiloh, she got up. (The priest Eli was sitting on a chair by the door of the Lord’s temple.) 10 Though she was resentful, she prayed to the Lord while she cried. 11 She made this vow, “Lord of Armies, if you will look at my misery, remember me, and give me a boy, then I will give him to you for as long as he lives. A razor will never be used on his head.” 12 While Hannah was praying a long time in front of the Lord, Eli was watching her mouth. 13 She was praying silently. Her voice couldn’t be heard; only her lips were moving. Eli thought she was drunk.

14 “How long are you going to stay drunk?” Eli asked her. “Get rid of your wine.”

15 Hannah responded, “No sir. I’m not drunk. I’m depressed. I’m pouring out my heart to the Lord. 16 Don’t take me to be a good-for-nothing woman. I was praying like this because I’ve been troubled and tormented.”

17 Eli replied, “Go in peace, and may the God of Israel grant your request.”

18 “May you continue to be kind to me,” she said. Then the woman went her way and ate. She was no longer sad.[a]

19 Early in the morning Elkanah and his family got up and worshiped in front of the Lord. Then they returned home to Ramah. Elkanah made love to his wife Hannah, and the Lord remembered her. 20 Hannah became pregnant and gave birth to a son. She named him Samuel [God Hears], because she said, “I asked the Lord for him.”

Samuel’s Childhood

21 To keep his vow, Elkanah and his entire household again went to offer the annual sacrifice to the Lord. 22 But Hannah didn’t go. She told her husband, “I’ll wait until the boy is weaned. Then I’ll bring him and present him to the Lord, and he’ll stay there permanently.”

23 “Do what you think is best,” her husband Elkanah told her. “Wait until you’ve weaned him. May the Lord keep his word.” The woman stayed and nursed her son until she had weaned him.

24 As soon as she had weaned Samuel, she took him with her. She also brought a three-year-old bull,[b] half a bushel of flour, and a full wineskin. She brought him to the Lord’s house at Shiloh while the boy was still a child.

25 Then the parents butchered the bull and brought the child to Eli. 26 “Sir,” Hannah said, “as sure as you live, I’m the woman who stood here next to you and prayed to the Lord. 27 I prayed for this child, and the Lord granted my request. 28 In return, I am giving him to the Lord. He will be dedicated to the Lord for his whole life.”

And they worshiped the Lord there.

Hannah’s Prayer

Hannah prayed out loud,

“My heart finds joy in the Lord.
My head is lifted to the Lord.
My mouth mocks my enemies.
I rejoice because you saved me.
There is no one holy like the Lord.
There is no one but you, O Lord.
There is no Rock like our God.

“Do not boast
or let arrogance come out of your mouth
because the Lord is a God of knowledge,
and he weighs our actions.

“The bows of the warriors are broken,
but those who stumble are armed with strength.
Those who were well-fed hire themselves out for a piece of bread,
but those who were hungry hunger no more.
Even the woman who was childless gives birth to seven children,
but the mother of many children grieves all alone.

“The Lord kills, and he gives life.
He makes people go down to the grave, and he raises them up again.
The Lord causes poverty and grants wealth.
He humbles people; he also promotes them.
He raises the poor from the dust.
He lifts the needy from the trash heap
in order to make them sit with nobles
and even to make them inherit a glorious throne.

“The pillars of the earth are the Lord’s.
He has set the world on them.
He safeguards the steps of his faithful ones,
but wicked people are silenced in darkness
because humans cannot succeed by their own strength.

10 “Those who oppose the Lord are broken into pieces.
He thunders at them from the heavens.
The Lord judges the ends of the earth.
He gives strength to his King
and lifts the head of his Messiah.”[c]

11 Then Elkanah went home to Ramah. But the boy Samuel served the Lord under the priest Eli.

The Sins of Eli’s Sons

12 Eli’s sons, Hophni and Phinehas, were good-for-nothing priests; they had no faith in the Lord. 13 Now, this was how the priests dealt with the people who were offering sacrifices: While the meat was boiling, the priest’s servant would come with a three-pronged fork in his hand. 14 Then he would stick it into the pot, kettle, cauldron, or pan. Whatever the fork brought up from the pot belonged to the priest. This is what the priests did in Shiloh to all the people of Israel who came there to sacrifice. 15 But in the case of Eli’s sons, even before the people burned the fat, their servants would come and say to the man who was sacrificing, “Give the meat to the priest to roast. He doesn’t want boiled meat from you. He wants it raw.”

16 If the man said to the servant, “First let the fat be burned, then take as much as you want,” the servant would say to him, “Give it to me now, or I’ll take it by force.” 17 The sin of Eli’s sons was a serious matter to the Lord, because these men were treating the offerings made to the Lord with contempt.

The Faithfulness of Samuel’s Family

18 Meanwhile, Samuel continued to serve in front of the Lord. As a boy he was already wearing a linen ephod. [d] 19 His mother would make him a robe and bring it to him every year when she went with her husband to offer the annual sacrifice.

20 Eli would bless Elkanah (and his wife) and say, “May the Lord give you children from this woman in place of the one which she has given to the Lord.” Then they would go home.

21 The Lord came to Hannah. She became pregnant five times and had three sons and two daughters. Meanwhile, the boy Samuel grew up in front of the Lord.

John 5:1-23

Jesus Cures a Man at the Bethesda Pool

Later, Jesus went to Jerusalem for a Jewish festival.

Near Sheep Gate in Jerusalem was a pool called Bethesda in Hebrew. It had five porches. Under these porches a large number of sick people—people who were blind, lame, or paralyzed—used to lie. [a] One man, who had been sick for 38 years, was lying there. Jesus saw the man lying there and knew that he had been sick for a long time. So Jesus asked the man, “Would you like to get well?”

The sick man answered Jesus, “Sir, I don’t have anyone to put me into the pool when the water is stirred. While I’m trying to get there, someone else steps into the pool ahead of me.”

Jesus told the man, “Get up, pick up your cot, and walk.” The man immediately became well, picked up his cot, and walked.

That happened on a day of rest—a holy day. 10 So the Jews told the man who had been healed, “This is a day of rest—a holy day. You’re not allowed to carry your cot today.”

11 The man replied, “The man who made me well told me to pick up my cot and walk.”

12 The Jews asked him, “Who is the man who told you to pick it up and walk?” 13 But the man who had been healed didn’t know who Jesus was. (Jesus had withdrawn from the crowd.)

14 Later, Jesus met the man in the temple courtyard and told him, “You’re well now. Stop sinning so that something worse doesn’t happen to you.”

15 The man went back to the Jews and told them that Jesus was the man who had made him well.

The Son Is Equal to the Father

16 The Jews began to persecute Jesus because he kept healing people on the day of rest—a holy day. 17 Jesus replied to them, “My Father is working right now, and so am I.”

18 His reply made the Jews more intent on killing him. Not only did he break the laws about the day of rest—a holy day, but also he made himself equal to God when he said repeatedly that God was his Father.

19 Jesus said to the Jews, “I can guarantee this truth: The Son cannot do anything on his own. He can do only what he sees the Father doing. Indeed, the Son does exactly what the Father does. 20 The Father loves the Son and shows him everything he is doing. The Father will show him even greater things to do than these things so that you will be amazed. 21 In the same way that the Father brings back the dead and gives them life, the Son gives life to anyone he chooses.

22 “The Father doesn’t judge anyone. He has entrusted judgment entirely to the Son 23 so that everyone will honor the Son as they honor the Father. Whoever doesn’t honor the Son doesn’t honor the Father who sent him.

Psalm 105:37-45

37 He brought Israel out with silver and gold,
and no one among his tribes stumbled.
38 The Egyptians were terrified of Israel,
so they were glad when Israel left.
39 He spread out a cloud as a protective covering
and a fire to light up the night.
40 The Israelites asked, and he brought them quail

41 He opened a rock, and water gushed

42 He remembered his holy promise to his servant Abraham.
43 He brought his people out with joy,
his chosen ones with a song of joy.

Footnotes:

  1. John 5:5 Some manuscripts and translations add verses 3b–4: “They would wait for the water to move. People believed that at a certain time an angel from the Lord would go into the pool and stir up the water. The first person who would step into the water after it was stirred up would be cured from whatever disease he had.”

Psalm 105:37-45

37 He brought Israel out with silver and gold,
and no one among his tribes stumbled.
38 The Egyptians were terrified of Israel,
so they were glad when Israel left.
39 He spread out a cloud as a protective covering
and a fire to light up the night.
40 The Israelites asked, and he brought them quail
and filled them with bread from heaven.
41 He opened a rock, and water gushed
and flowed like a river through the dry places.

42 He remembered his holy promise to his servant Abraham.
43 He brought his people out with joy,
his chosen ones with a song of joy.
44 He gave them the lands of other nations,
and they inherited what others had worked for
45 so that they would obey his laws
and follow his teachings.

Hallelujah!

Ruth 2:1-4:22  ~John 4:43-54 ~ Psalm 105:16-36 ~ Proverbs 14:26-27

Today is the 6th day of May.  Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible.  I am Brian.  It’s great to be here with you closing down another week.  Our first week in this beautiful month of May is coming to a close. (Not a “clothes,” a “close.”)  It is good to spend this time with you around the global campfire that is this community.

We’ve been reading from the Holman Christian Standard Bible this week which is what we’ll do today and we kind of got ourselves into the story of Ruth yesterday, this beautiful oasis in the Bible that comes at a time where we’ve been a lot.  A lot has happened since we crossed the Jordan and came into the promised land. There has been a lot of defeat, a lot of back and forth, a lot of things that have just gotten messed up, so Ruth comes at a really beautiful time.  We will complete the story of Ruth in today’s reading.  So Ruth, chapter 2, verse 1 through 4:22 today.

Commentary:

We concluded the book of Ruth today.  It is a short story but it’s a beautiful story and, like I said, it’s a breath of fresh air because we’ve been watching people make some pretty colossal mistakes and some really severe repercussions because of them and then this story comes along, and it is like there are still really, really true people with character.  It’s lovely the way God shows up in that story.

Ironically those fields that Ruth was gleaning in, Boaz’s fields, those have been historically associated with the same fields that shepherds were using to watch their flocks by night when angels appeared to announce the arrival of the Savior in Bethlehem.  That is where this is also taking place.  So when you kind of go to some of those shepherd’s fields, because they are still being used, shepherds still are using the hillside there in Bethlehem to watch over their sheep, so when you visit that area, you connect with the Ruth and Boaz and Naomi story as well.

But it is beautiful just the way that Naomi mothers Ruth, right?  And just the way Naomi is able to see kind of what is going on here and the opportunity for Ruth to kind of bridge the gap and reunite the family in a strong way because Boaz is being really good to Ruth. And Ruth’s reputation is really, really strong for what she did.  I mean, she left her family.  She left everything to return with Naomi.

So Naomi gives her instructions.  “Take a bath, get all cleaned up, put on some perfume, look like your gorgeous self, put on your best dress and go to the party that celebrates the harvest and watch for Boaz when he goes to sleep.”  The interesting thing is it is not “when he has had a little to drink and gets sleepy and he lays down, then go try to hook up with him, see if there is any spark between you guys.”  It is not like that.  It is all in proper order.  Go and lay at his feet, right?  Don’t go cuddle up next to him, go lay at his feet.  He’ll understand what you’re saying.  You’re saying that you are an available woman and he’ll know what to do and he’ll tell you what to do.

And he does.  When Ruth gets home and tells Naomi this story, you can just see the smile on her face. “Don’t worry.  Just hang out.  He will not leave this matter undone today.”  And he doesn’t.  And through their union, Ruth is saved, Naomi is saved, Boaz is beyond happy, for he has just gotten a beautiful wife.  Through their union comes this child, a grandchild to Naomi that’s like a child to her because he is as if he was the child of her son.  And so new life has come and Naomi’s heart if filled.  She came back to Bethlehem bitter, abandoned, feeling that way, and alone and in a short amount of time there is this new life and through this new life, this baby that is born will be the grandfather of King David who we will be getting to know very soon and getting to know well.

So we come to this story and realize that doing things right is doing things right, doing things with honor and character and integrity, all of the things that the Proverbs continue to pound into us every day, not because they are trying to force us into doing things we don’t want to do, but because they are the wisdom of the ages.  This is how you live if you want to live successfully  in this world.

We kind of see the whole thing play out before our eyes in the book of Ruth.  It works. To have integrity works.  To have character works.  It’s a slower build.  We’re so used to instant gratification.  In whatever way we can get it, we want things now.  Even if we have to work hard, we just want to work hard for a little while. We don’t want to take the long view, but the Bible takes the long view on everything.  So integrity, character, discipline, these things, they take time to build, to build up inside ourselves and then to build up the reverberations in our world and in our lives.  But it is worth it because it is real.  It is solid. It is not this momentary gratification that just burns away really quick no matter what it is.  This is real.

So may we apply the book of Ruth, the story of Ruth to our own lives and let it serve as a reminder that it is worth doing things right, even though that takes longer, even though that may be harder sometimes, even though it may be more work.  We’re building something real, something that lasts, something that is true and that changes us.

Prayer

Father, thank you for such a beautiful story, such a beautiful rescue, the way that you rescued this woman and her daughter-in-law and brought through them King David and through the line of David you came, you chose to come. So thank you for this story and this reminder.  But we ask that you help us by the power of your Holy Spirit to apply this to our own lives, that it is worth it to be people of character, to be people who are true, to be people who have integrity, to be people who represent and live within your kingdom honorably, as ambassadors that can hold their heads up high. Help us, Jesus.  We ask in your name, amen.

Announcements

Www.DailyAudioBible.com is the website, home base.  It’s where you find out what is going on around here so check it out.  Check out the Daily Audio Bible Shop for resources that are available including the Promised Land Films that I talk about from time to time.  We filmed like over 80 of these locations that are so pivotal in the scriptures.  About half of them are not easy to get to.  A lot of them we had to hire a four-wheel drive vehicle and driver to get us out to some of these places.  Some of these places you wouldn’t take a tour to them just because that could cause some unrest in certain areas.  But you can kind of go in solo as long as you know what you’re doing and have a guide and stuff.  So we’ve been able to bring a lot of those places that people never see.  Even if you go to the land, you don’t usually see them either because they are just so difficult to get to or whatever.  Those are there, too.  So the Promised Land Films, those are in the Daily Audio Bible Shop, so check that out.

Check out the Prayer Wall while you’re there.  It’s a great place to meet, to kind of respond and pray for people that are needing it and ask for prayer if you’re needing it and be responded to in that way, so check that out as well.

If you want to partner with the Daily Audio Bible, if the community that we are is part of the rhythm of your life now, then we’re all in this together and we’ve only ever done this together.  So thank you for your partnership in helping us to continue to be here every single day.  There is a link on the home page at www.DailyAudioBible.com.  If you use the Daily Audio Bible App, you can press the More button in the lower right-hand corner.  Or, if you prefer, the mailing address is P.O. Box 1996, Spring Hill, TN 37174.

And, as always, if you have a prayer request or comment, (877) 942-4253 is the number to dial.

And that’s it for today.  I’m Brian. I love you and I’ll be waiting for you here tomorrow.

Community Prayer Requests and Praise Reports

Hi, this is Pastor Chris from the Live Free or Die State.  A theme I’ve been hearing in the prayer requests lately is people who are absolutely overwhelmed and not knowing which way to turn next.  Let me tell you a story of something that happened to me, some advice that was given to me by an Army drill sergeant at Fort Dix, NJ.  Part of the basic training experience is the obstacle course.  We were being shown where we were to run and every obstacle was more scary then the one before.  And then we were told that we would be doing this at night with gunfire going on over our heads.  As everybody there started to freak out, our drill sergeant said, “The way you do this is you take on the obstacle that is in front of you right now.  Don’t think about the ones that are ahead, just the one right now.  And when you’re done with this one, you can worry about the next.  And besides that, I will be ahead of you.  Follow me.”  And Jesus is saying the same thing to all of you who are overwhelmed, to just take on the obstacle that is in front of you.  Don’t worry about the one that is next just yet.  And follow Jesus, he will lead you through.  I got through that obstacle course at Fort Dix, NJ and lived to tell the tale and following Jesus, we will do the same.  Thanks.  God bless you all.  Bye-bye.

Heavenly Father, I come before you today.  I am praying for Daniel Johnson, Jr., and his family.  Heavenly Father, I’m so sorry for the death of his sister.  I pray that she is with you now and you have your arms wrapped around her and are just comforting her.  I pray for Daniel Johnson, Jr., and his entire family.  His stepmother, the children.  Please comfort them at this time, Father.  Please give them direction in the way they need to go.  Please help them to support one another and help their friends around them to also support them and help them in any way that they need help right now.  This is such a great and devastating loss right now and so surprising to the entire family.  Please bless them, Father, and keep them in your heart.  Annette, A., I am still praying for your son Alex.  May he be blessed.  May his foot be healed and may he come out of jail very, very soon and may God find him in his heart.  Brian, Jill, the entire Hardin family, everyone behind the scenes at the DAB, I pray for you each and every day.  Thank you so much for this ministry.  Thank you for the entire community at the Daily Audio Bible.  We are so blessed to have one another and to pray for one another. Thank you all for your prayers. This is Kim from California.  God bless you all.

Hello.  My name is Beatrice B. and I’m a first-time caller.  I have been listening for a year and five months.  I have a prayer request.  First of all, I just want to thank God for giving me the courage to call in. I have a prayer request for my marriage. I’ve been married for 30 years. Twenty years of drug addiction in this marriage with myself and my husband, alcohol, the partying life.  We gave our life to the Lord 10 years now. My husband went back to drinking. He lost his oldest daughter in a previous marriage through a car accident, drunk driver, and he went back to drinking and my prayer request is I don’t know what to do.  I don’t want to be in this marriage any longer because of verbal abuse while he’s intoxicated.  I’m tired of living that way.  I just need your prayers.  I don’t know what to do.  I’ve been married to him for 30 years.  Just a lot of issues.  When he drinks, he’s a different person.  The next day it is like nothing, sweet as can be.  His name is Daniel.  And I thank God he’s done so many miracles in my life.  I’m a kidney transplant patient for five years.  I have a lot of health issues because of the strong medications that I take.  But I just need prayers for my marriage.  I feel like I’m stuck in this marriage.  I don’t…

Hey all.  It’s Miguel from California.  I just got done listening earlier today to the Community Prayer and the Spirit has given me a word that I believe is for this group.  I do feel the weight of the amount of desperation that is in this group for God to move and the word is in Matthew 14.  It is the story of Jesus walking on the water and Peter walking on the water towards Jesus.  This word here that I hear is a word of vision.  What I’m talking about with vision is our eyes have the ability to look in one direction.  I know you have the ability to cross your eyes, but then you’re out of focus.  But you only have the ability to look in one direction and in verse 30 it says that Peter, he saw the wind and he was afraid. See, he looked away from Jesus. He for that moment looked at the storm, looked at the wind, looked at the waves.  It was at that moment that he began sinking.  Not that the waves weren’t there, not that the storm wasn’t there, but he began sinking when he lost his focus, when his vision went away from Jesus.  Then came the cry, “Lord, save me.”  I just want us to go ahead and stop right there and pray.  Father God, Lord Jesus, I pray for this group, the Daily Audio Bible community.  God, there are so many that are crying out in so many different ways.  The phrase is the same.  “Lord, save me.”  Lord, save the people that are crying out in prayer.  God, I see in the very next verse that Jesus, you immediately reached out your hand and caught Peter.  So I ask Jesus, that you reach out and catch the people that are crying out, “Lord, save me.”  So many people have cried out about broken marriages.

Hey DAB listeners.  This is Jocelyn from Michigan.  I just wanted to call and ask for prayer.  I am a brand new nurse.  I’m working here in the ER and I’m finding that I absolutely love where God has placed me but ask for prayer because many of the patients who come in are not in their right mind and a lot of them, the other night, one of them actually was cursing all of the staff and hitting.  This is not an uncommon thing that happens and sometimes it feels very discouraging and like, myself included, we are trying to help these people but yet we get cursed for doing so.  It made me think of how this is how we treat God.  It is the feeling of being the one who is trying to help and then being yelled at and screamed at and hit sometimes.  It just really made me think of how maybe this is how God feels.  I ask for your guys’ prayers for my eyes to be open, for my heart to have peace and love and compassion for people who I normally wouldn’t be able to love.  So I appreciate you guys.  I love you so much and I hope that you have a wonderful evening whatever you’re doing. Thank you.

Ruth 2-4

Ruth and Boaz Meet

Now Naomi had a relative on her husband’s side named Boaz. He was a prominent man of noble character(A) from Elimelech’s family.

Ruth the Moabitess asked Naomi, “Will you let me go into the fields and gather fallen grain(B) behind someone who allows me to?”

Naomi answered her, “Go ahead, my daughter.” So Ruth left and entered the field to gather grain behind the harvesters. She happened(C) to be in the portion of land belonging to Boaz, who was from Elimelech’s family.

Later, when Boaz arrived from Bethlehem, he said to the harvesters, “The Lord be with you.”(D)

“The Lord bless you,”(E) they replied.

Boaz asked his servant who was in charge of the harvesters, “Whose young woman is this?”

The servant answered, “She is the young Moabite woman who returned with Naomi from the land of Moab. She asked, ‘Will you let me gather fallen grain among the bundles behind the harvesters?’ She came and has remained from early morning until now, except that she rested a little in the shelter.”[a]

Then Boaz said to Ruth, “Listen, my daughter.[b] Don’t go and gather grain in another field, and don’t leave this one, but stay here close to my female servants. See which field they are harvesting, and follow them. Haven’t I ordered the young men not to touch you?[c] When you are thirsty, go and drink from the jars the young men have filled.”

10 She bowed with her face to the ground(F) and said to him, “Why are you so kind to notice me, although I am a foreigner?”

11 Boaz answered her, “Everything you have done for your mother-in-law since your husband’s death has been fully reported to me: how you left your father and mother and the land of your birth, and how you came to a people you didn’t previously know. 12 May the Lord reward you for what you have done,(G) and may you receive a full reward from the Lord God of Israel, under whose wings you have come for refuge.”(H)

13 “My lord,” she said, “you have been so kind to me, for you have comforted and encouraged[d] your slave, although I am not like one of your female servants.”

14 At mealtime Boaz told her, “Come over here and have some bread and dip it in the vinegar sauce.” So she sat beside the harvesters, and he offered her roasted grain. She ate and was satisfied and had some left over.

15 When she got up to gather grain, Boaz ordered his young men, “Let her even gather grain among the bundles, and don’t humiliate her. 16 Pull out some stalks from the bundles for her and leave them for her to gather. Don’t rebuke her.” 17 So Ruth gathered grain in the field until evening. She beat out what she had gathered, and it was about 26 quarts[e] of barley. 18 She picked up the grain and went into the town, where her mother-in-law saw what she had gleaned. Then she brought out what she had left over from her meal and gave it to her.

19 Then her mother-in-law said to her, “Where did you gather barley today, and where did you work? May the Lord bless the man who noticed you.”(I)

Ruth told her mother-in-law about the men she had worked with and said, “The name of the man I worked with today is Boaz.”

20 Then Naomi said to her daughter-in-law, “May he be blessed by the Lord,(J) who has not forsaken his[f] kindness to the living or the dead.”(K) Naomi continued, “The man is a close relative. He is one of our family redeemers.”(L)

21 Ruth the Moabitess said, “He also told me, ‘Stay with my young men until they have finished all of my harvest.’”

22 So Naomi said to her daughter-in-law Ruth, “My daughter, it is good for you to work[g] with his female servants, so that nothing will happen to you in another field.” 23 Ruth stayed close to Boaz’s female servants and gathered grain until the barley and the wheat harvests were finished.(M) And she lived with[h] her mother-in-law.

Ruth’s Appeal to Boaz

Ruth’s mother-in-law Naomi said to her, “My daughter, shouldn’t I find security for you, so that you will be taken care of? Now isn’t Boaz our relative?(N) Haven’t you been working with his female servants? This evening he will be winnowing barley on the threshing floor. Wash, put on perfumed oil, and wear your best clothes. Go down to the threshing floor, but don’t let the man know you are there until he has finished eating and drinking. When he lies down, notice the place where he’s lying, go in and uncover his feet, and lie down. Then he will explain to you what you should do.”

So Ruth said to her, “I will do everything you say.”[i] She went down to the threshing floor and did everything her mother-in-law had instructed her. After Boaz ate, drank, and was in good spirits,[j] he went to lie down at the end of the pile of barley. Then she went in secretly, uncovered his feet, and lay down.

At midnight, Boaz was startled, turned over, and there lying at his feet was a woman! So he asked, “Who are you?”

“I am Ruth, your slave,” she replied. “Spread your cloak[k] over me,(O) for you are a family redeemer.”(P)

10 Then he said, “May the Lord bless you,(Q) my daughter. You have shown more kindness now than before,[l] because you have not pursued younger men, whether rich or poor. 11 Now don’t be afraid, my daughter. I will do for you whatever you say,[m] since all the people in my town[n] know that you are a woman of noble character.(R) 12 Yes, it is true that I am a family redeemer, but there is a redeemer closer than I am. 13 Stay here tonight, and in the morning, if he wants to redeem you, that’s good.(S) Let him redeem you. But if he doesn’t want to redeem you, as the Lord lives,(T) I will. Now lie down until morning.”

14 So she lay down at his feet until morning but got up while it was still dark.[o] Then Boaz said, “Don’t let it be known that a[p] woman came to the threshing floor.” 15 And he told Ruth, “Bring the shawl you’re wearing and hold it out.” When she held it out, he shoveled six measures of barley into her shawl, and she[q] went into the town.

16 She went to her mother-in-law, Naomi, who asked her, “How did it go,[r] my daughter?”

Then Ruth told her everything the man had done for her. 17 She said, “He gave me these six measures of barley, because he said,[s] ‘Don’t go back to your mother-in-law empty-handed.’”

18 Naomi said, “My daughter, wait until you find out how things go, for he won’t rest unless he resolves this today.”

Ruth and Boaz Marry

Boaz went to the gate of the town(U) and sat down there. Soon the family redeemer Boaz had spoken about came by. Boaz called him by name and said, “Come[t] over here and sit down.” So he went over and sat down. Then Boaz took 10 men of the town’s elders(V) and said, “Sit here.” And they sat down. He said to the redeemer, “Naomi, who has returned from the land of Moab, is selling a piece of land that belonged to our brother Elimelech.(W) I thought I should inform you:[u] Buy it back in the presence of those seated here and in the presence of the elders of my people. If you want to redeem it, do so. But if you do[v] not want to redeem it, tell me so that I will know, because there isn’t anyone other than you to redeem it, and I am next after you.”

“I want to redeem it,” he answered.

Then Boaz said, “On the day you buy the land from Naomi, you will also acquire[w] Ruth the Moabitess, the wife of the deceased man, to perpetuate the man’s name on his property.”(X)

The redeemer replied, “I can’t redeem it myself, or I will ruin my own inheritance. Take my right of redemption, because I can’t redeem it.”

At an earlier period in Israel, a man removed his sandal(Y) and gave it to the other party in order to make any matter legally binding concerning the right of redemption or the exchange of property. This was the method of legally binding a transaction in Israel.

So the redeemer removed his sandal and said to Boaz, “Buy back the property yourself.”

Boaz said to the elders and all the people, “You are witnesses today that I am buying from Naomi everything that belonged to Elimelech, Chilion, and Mahlon. 10 I will also acquire Ruth the Moabitess, Mahlon’s widow, as my wife, to perpetuate the deceased man’s name on his property, so that his name will not disappear among his relatives or from the gate of his home. You are witnesses today.”

11 The elders and all the people who were at the gate said, “We are witnesses. May the Lord make the woman who is entering your house like Rachel and Leah,(Z) who together built the house of Israel. May you be powerful in Ephrathah and famous in Bethlehem. 12 May your house become like the house of Perez, the son Tamar bore to Judah,(AA) because of the offspring the Lord will give you by this young woman.”

13 Boaz took Ruth and she became his wife. When he was intimate with her, the Lord enabled her to conceive, and she gave birth to a son. 14 Then the women said to Naomi, “Praise the Lord, who has not left you without a family redeemer today. May his name become well known in Israel. 15 He will renew your life and sustain you in your old age. Indeed, your daughter-in-law, who loves you and is better to you than seven sons,(AB) has given birth to him.” 16 Naomi took the child, placed him on her lap, and took care of him. 17 The neighbor women said, “A son has been born to Naomi,” and they named him Obed.[x] He was the father of Jesse, the father of David.

John 4:43-54

A Galilean Welcome

43 After two days He left there for Galilee.(A) 44 Jesus Himself testified(B) that a prophet has no honor in his own country.(C) 45 When(D) they entered Galilee, the Galileans(E) welcomed Him because they had seen everything He did in Jerusalem(F) during the festival.(G) For they also had gone to the festival.

The Second Sign: Healing an Official’s Son

46 Then He went again to Cana(H) of Galilee, where He had turned the water into wine. There was a certain royal official whose son was ill at Capernaum.(I) 47 When this man heard that Jesus had come from Judea(J) into Galilee, he went to Him and pleaded with Him to come down and heal his son, for he was about to die.

48 Jesus told him, “Unless you people see signs and wonders,(K) you will not believe.”(L)

49 “Sir,”(M) the official said to Him, “come down before my boy dies!”

50 “Go,” Jesus told him, “your son will live.” The man believed what[a] Jesus said to him and departed.

51 While he was still going down, his slaves met him saying that his boy was alive. 52 He asked them at what time he got better. “Yesterday at seven in the morning[b] the fever left him,” they answered. 53 The father(N) realized this was the very hour at which Jesus had told him, “Your son will live.” Then he himself believed, along with his whole household.

54 This, therefore, was the second sign(O) Jesus performed after He came from Judea to Galilee.(P)

Judges 21:1-Ruth 1:22 ~ John 4:4-42 ~ Psalm 105:1-15 ~ Proverbs 14:25

Today is May 5th.  Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible.  I’m Brian. It’s great to be here with you today as we get prepared to take the next step forward in the scriptures. Yesterday was our last full day in the book of Judges and we will conclude the book of Judges today and find our way into the book of Ruth, which I love getting to.  It’s like a deep exhale in all of the journey that we’ve been on, kind of culminating with this really difficult story of the civil war and destruction of the tribe of Benjamin.  But before we get to Ruth, we need to complete the book of Judges.  So from Judges, chapter 21, verse 1 through the end of the book, we’re reading from the Holman Christian Standard Bible.

Introduction of a New Book (Old Testament):

That concludes the book of Judges which brings us to the book of Ruth. Ruth is a really short book that we’ll finish tomorrow, today and tomorrow, but it is a breathtaking story. At its heart it is an account of God’s faithfulness through the lives of three people who chose to do the right thing. We’ve been through plenty of people who chose to do the wrong thing and we’ve kind of seen the back and forth of that. This is three people who did the right thing and their faithfulness brought about King David and through the line of King David came Jesus.  So the book of Ruth shows us when people that have character use that character to make proper and right decisions, God’s faithfulness is there in that.  The book of Ruth is also the story of valiant women of character.  This is a great time as we approach our observation, at least here in America, of mothers, Mother’s Day coming.  This is a great time for this.

Nobody really knows who wrote the book of Ruth.  Jewish tradition talks about Samuel writing it, although most biblical scholars that are historians don’t really believe that is a possibility. This would have been written after Samuel died in the time of King David.  And yet it refers to the time of the judges.  Actually, there was a point in history when Ruth was a part of the book of Judges but then later it was given its own appropriate delineation.

We’ve seen some really hard things happen that are very difficult over the last month in the scriptures, colossal mistakes made on the part of the people as they walked away from God and then they suffered the terrible consequences that they were warned about in advance as a result.  So we arrive at Ruth and it is like a springtime breeze.  It’s a breath of fresh air.  People still have character and God shows up in his faithfulness. So we begin with Ruth chapter 1.

Commentary:

We talked about Ruth and we’ll flesh out and fill out this story in its entirety in tomorrow’s reading.  And then we have this interesting interplay in the book of John where Jesus is among the Samaritan people when the Jews and the Samaritans didn’t really associate with each other.  Jews kind of looked down on Samaritans as lower and definitely red-headed stepchildren in the faith because of the way they worshipped God.  It just came from some bad places and had gotten just really different over time, and we’ll see that story open itself up to us.

I guess another spoiler alert is that over time this people, these chosen people who went through all that desert wandering and came into the promised land and became Israel, there is a day not too distant in the future for us in the stories told in the scriptures where this will be a united kingdom.  It actually will be a kingdom.  Where we are right now, everyone does what they want to do, but there will come a time where it is not quite like that.  It is more of an organized kingdom.  And a time will come when that kingdom will divide.  They will not see eye to eye and the kingdom will divide and then they will be what is known as the northern and the southern kingdoms.

So the northern kingdom will be called Israel and the southern kingdom will be called Judah and then in the course of time, the northern kingdom, which is where we are with Jesus, we’re in the north, so the Galilee where Jesus spent most of his time is in the north, it will be defeated, carried off. Other people will be sent in to populate the land.  There will be an entire mixture of culture and custom.  This will be after the northern kingdom has already started to worship idols and to kind of twist the traditions, all in an effort to keep people from Jerusalem.

So just over time things got twisted and the Jewish people won’t look at the Samaritan people as part of them anymore because they’re not really part of them anymore.  What used to be in the north isn’t there anymore and so it is all inbred with other nations that have been conquered.  So they look down on them for their worship, for their customs, for their integration with other cultures, for their intermarriage, just for the mixture. They can’t be looked at as these true people descended from those who came out of Egypt.  For Jesus to be having this conversation at all, for him to even be there is odd, at least from a Jewish perspective.  And then for him to be there talking to a woman, that is breaking cultural boundaries as well.  You begin to see Jesus just doesn’t care what people think about him, but he also doesn’t care about these manmade rules that wall each other off.  He is not looking at the world from that perspective at all.

Jesus is thirsty and he’s sitting at Jacob’s well.  That well still exists.  It is not particularly easy to get to, but it still exists.  We got to it one time and we were able to film it and it’s in the Promised Land Films.  So many of the places that we talk about we’ve taken the time over the years to film them in detail so that we can bring them back.  It changes things when you can look at what you’re talking about, see the place that you’re talking about.  I’ve been to that place.

It’s interesting to play that conversation out.  You see this interesting almost flirtation going on with this woman.  Jesus isn’t really flirting back.  He’s just being.  He shows this masculinity that is not moving toward something.  He is not moving in on the girl.  It is almost like she is moving in on him.  It’s almost playful.

“What are you talking about, this water?  Give me this water.”

Jesus just turns it back.  “Go get your husband.”

And she’s like, “I don’t have a husband,” kind of saying “I might be available.”

And then Jesus just captures the moment.  He just tells her the truth about her life and she can only respond the way that she did:  “I perceive that you are a prophet.”  And then she asks him the big question between the Samaritans and the Jews.  And Jesus answers her and everything, but he just moves beyond all that.

“I have living water and when I give living water no one will thirst again.”

Of course, she’s like, “I want some of that water.”

And then Jesus just simply tells us what we’ve all got to remember.  “You can drink this water and you’ll get thirsty again, but the water that I give will well up from within.”  So you can drink this water and you’ll be thirsty again. You can keep looking for life in ways that it can’t come and you’ll always have to keep looking for more, but if you come to me, life will well up from within and it will spring up not to just life as you know it, but eternal life.  You will always have life exploding from within you.  This is the hope of the gospel and so may we take this little story and consider the things that we are going to, the wells that we are drinking from in order to find life, to quench our thirst, only to have to return because we’re going to be thirty again.  We keep going to these wells looking for life when Jesus is saying “I can give you life and you will never thirst again.  And I cannot just give you life right here, I can give you life eternal.  It’s what you’re looking for.”  So let’s look at the wells that we keep going to in search for life when life is actually available in Jesus.

Prayer

We thank you, Jesus, for this encouragement and admonition and counsel from the word certainly, but we thank you that this is available.  This search that we continually are on and this life that we are continually longing for, that desire can actually be filled in you. So Holy Spirit, come and show us how to drink from the well that will spring up from within to eternal life. We ask this in your precious name, Jesus.  Amen.

Hello, this is Stu from Southern California.  I’m calling in.  A first-time caller.  I’ve been listening for about a year and a half and it is such a pleasure to be a part of this community.  I just want to lift everybody up in the community for all the prayers and the love that you share with everyone.  I was touched the other day by a passage that Brian was reading out of Judges and in particular it was a story where he had spoken to the way that we look at things in the Bible and sometimes don’t understand the bad stuff that is going on and incorrectly assume that it is the will of God.  That was really something that connected well with me.  I think the Bible is a story of truth for our lives. It’s God’s word to us explaining what happens when we go alone and when we choose our own way and don’t seek God’s way. You know, it started in the garden and it is a story that we see what happens when we choose to go it alone and go it our own way and not inviting God into our circumstance.  It is certainly something that always ends badly, but when we give ourselves to God, when we seek him in all we do and put things before him, this is following his will.  This is truly abiding.  We trust him in faith because small faith in something strong is good.  I would ask for prayer for my family, that we would follow God, we would lean on God, trust God, and grow in our relationship with the one who gave it all.  Thank you Jesus.  We love you. Thank you everybody in the Daily Audio Bible.  You’re such a beautiful family.  Goodbye.

Hi.  This Raspberry Flower from Arizona.  I wanted to give a praise report for God.  He is so amazing and perfect and I’m so in love with him.  I was listening to the Daily Audio Bible about Gideon and how the Lord kept telling him he had too many soldiers and that the people would say that the people won by their own strength.  And so he whittles it down to 300 soldiers and God gave them the victory. All glory to God.  God spoke to me when I was listening to that and saying that was what he was doing for me at that moment with my homework studies.  I was feeling so frustrated and I just couldn’t seem to be memorizing and I was spending enough time and it just didn’t seem to be working and it was frustrating me because I had a final coming up and I didn’t feel like I had enough facts memorized and my brain wasn’t cooperating and I didn’t understand what God was doing.  So when I listened to that part of the Bible, the Holy Spirit just spoke to me and said this is what the Lord is doing so that when I got an A, which I did, God gave me an A, all glory to God, I would know it was God. So praising the Lord.  He is so good.  Next thing, I would like you to please pray for my friend Dory’s sister Anna, sister-in-law actually.  She hasn’t been able to carry a baby and she is five months pregnant right now and she’s in the hospital and please pray that her body will be healed and whole and be able to carry this baby to full term and be her first child.  Also, would you please pray for Dennis?  My friend’s husband has cancer and I believe.  I believe in God’s word and the Bible and he said that believers will lay hands and heal the sick.  I believe.  Thank you. Love you.  Bye.

Hey, this is Sheila calling from Texas in response to the lady who called from Athens, Greece, who needs to forgive her husband over his past infidelity.  I’m so grateful to God for prompting you to call. I’ll give you my testimony and hope this will help you and help many others.  Over five years ago my husband had an affair on me.  The Holy Spirit revealed it to me.  I felt weak and helpless, but by the grace of God I forgave my husband. I went ahead and called the woman who had the affair with my husband and was extremely gracious to her.  I told her that she should not be sleeping with a man except her husband.  Secondly, I told her because I’m a follower of Christ, I forgave her.  I told her that I would be praying for her.  Honestly speaking, this was Jesus speaking through me because there is no way I could have been this gracious had it not been for God. Supernaturally this woman texted me back and asked for forgiveness, saying that she had further confessed her sin to a pastor.  She also told me she wanted my marriage to work out.  Isn’t that God?  The Bible tells us in Revelation 12:11:  And they overcame and not Satan by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony. God has healed my marriage.  I love being married.  My husband cherishes me every day and showers me with so much affection.  Thank you Jesus.  I’ve seen what forgiveness can do.  I now know why God has put a burden in my heart for marriages.  I now know why I had to face the pain I had to face five years ago. Now I can boldly tell anyone with a marriage issue that indeed God can heal your marriage.  I’m living proof of that.  So forgive and be set free.  Forgive yourself, too.  Pray for your husband and be gracious to him.  Love will soon reign in your marriage, my sister.  Put on the full armor of God daily and you’ll overcome.  God bless you and stay strong in Christ.  Nothing is too difficult for our God.  I love you. Bye.

Hello DAB family.  This is Chandra calling from Maryland.  I’m calling because I wanted to offer my continuous prayers not only for Brian and Jill, but also Pastor Gary and every other person whose operating either as a pastor, as a spiritual leader, anyone who has that type of charge within the body of Christ because I know that, as my pastor said years ago, when you’re at the top, that is when the enemy always tries the greatest to come against you because you have a higher calling and a higher amount of influence.  Either way, I’m praying for you guys and you guys just continue to be strong and be of good courage and let the Lord continue to keep you, okay?  Love you guys.  Speak to you soon.  Bye.

Hello.  This is Stan, the Perseverer from Maryland.  Today is May 2nd and I just listened to our dear brother who is in Cincinnati with the loss of his stepsister and the cancer with his brother.  I was deeply touched by that and feel pulled by the Lord to just call and cry out on his behalf.  Father, I pray for this man from beautiful downtown Cincinnati, as he says.  Father, I pray that you would put hope in his heart, that you would give him peace and, Father, that you would extend your hand of grace and mercy over him.   Where there is sickness, that you replace it.  Where there is lack, would you provide it with plenty?  Where there is despair, would you replace it with thankfulness and gratitude? Father, I ask you to put a hedge of thorns around this man and his family and his extended family, particularly his stepmother, that any influences of the enemy that would be seeking to destroy, steal, plunder and confuse would be bound up in the name of Jesus.  Father, we thank you that we can come before your throne of grace and mercy and sit at your feet and ask on behalf of our brothers and sisters.   And Father, I want to just thank you for this community.  As I listen to the prayer lines, I am just amazed how you have fostered a love and a connectedness between each of us.  I pray these things in Jesus’ name.  Amen.

Judges 21 - Ruth 1

Brides for Benjamin

21 The men of Israel had sworn an oath at Mizpah: “None of us will give his daughter to a Benjaminite in marriage.”(A) So the people went to Bethel and sat there before God(B) until evening. They wept loudly and bitterly, and cried out, “Why, Lord God of Israel, has it occurred[a] that one tribe is missing in Israel today?” The next day the people got up early, built an altar there,(C) and offered burnt offerings and fellowship offerings. The Israelites asked, “Who of all the tribes of Israel didn’t come to the Lord with the assembly?” For a great oath had been taken that anyone who had not come to the Lord at Mizpah would certainly be put to death.

But the Israelites had compassion on their brothers, the Benjaminites, and said, “Today a tribe has been cut off from Israel. What should we do about wives for the survivors? We’ve sworn to the Lord not to give them any of our daughters as wives.” They asked, “Which city among the tribes of Israel didn’t come to the Lord at Mizpah?” It turned out that no one from Jabesh-gilead had come to the camp and the assembly. For when the people were counted, no one was there from the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead.

10 The congregation sent 12,000 brave warriors[b] there and commanded them: “Go and kill the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead with the sword,(D) including women and children. 11 This is what you should do: Completely destroy every male, as well as every female who has slept with a man.” 12 They found among the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead 400 young women, who had not had sexual relations with a man, and they brought them to the camp at Shiloh in the land of Canaan.

13 The whole congregation sent a message of peace(E) to the Benjaminites who were at the rock of Rimmon. 14 Benjamin returned at that time, and Israel gave them the women they had kept alive from Jabesh-gilead. But there were not enough for them.

15 The people had compassion on Benjamin, because the Lord had made this gap in the tribes of Israel. 16 The elders of the congregation said, “What should we do about wives for those who are left, since the women of Benjamin have been destroyed?” 17 They said, “There must be heirs for the survivors of Benjamin, so that a tribe of Israel will not be wiped out. 18 But we can’t give them our daughters as wives.” For the Israelites had sworn, “Anyone who gives a wife to a Benjaminite is cursed.” 19 They also said, “Look, there’s an annual festival to the Lord in Shiloh,(F) which is north of Bethel, east of the highway that goes up from Bethel to Shechem, and south of Lebonah.”

20 Then they commanded the Benjaminites: “Go and hide in the vineyards. 21 Watch, and when you see the young women of Shiloh come out to perform the dances,(G) each of you leave the vineyards and catch a wife for yourself from the young women of Shiloh, and go to the land of Benjamin. 22 When their fathers or brothers come to us and protest, we will tell them, ‘Show favor to them, since we did not get enough wives for each of them in the battle. You didn’t actually give the women to them, so[c] you are not guilty of breaking your oath.’”

23 The Benjaminites did this and took the number of women they needed from the dancers they caught. They went back to their own inheritance, rebuilt their cities,(H) and lived in them. 24 At that time, each of the Israelites returned from there to his own tribe and family. Each returned from there to his own inheritance.

25 In those days there was no king in Israel;(I) everyone did whatever he wanted.[d]

Naomi’s Family in Moab

During the time[e] of the judges,(J) there was a famine in the land.(K) A man left Bethlehem[f](L) in Judah with his wife and two sons to live in the land of Moab for a while. The man’s name was Elimelech,[g] and his wife’s name was Naomi.[h] The names of his two sons were Mahlon[i] and Chilion.[j] They were Ephrathites(M) from Bethlehem in Judah. They entered the land of Moab and settled there. Naomi’s husband Elimelech died, and she was left with her two sons. Her sons took Moabite women as their wives: one was named Orpah and the second was named Ruth. After they lived in Moab about 10 years, both Mahlon and Chilion also died, and Naomi was left without her two children and without her husband.

Ruth’s Loyalty to Naomi

She and her daughters-in-law prepared to leave the land of Moab, because she had heard in Moab that the Lord had paid attention to His people’s need by providing them food.(N) She left the place where she had been living, accompanied by her two daughters-in-law, and traveled along the road leading back to the land of Judah.

She said to them, “Each of you go back to your mother’s home.(O) May the Lord show faithful love to you as you have shown to the dead and to me. May the Lord enable each of you to find security(P) in the house of your new husband.” She kissed them, and they wept loudly.

10 “No,” they said to her. “We will go with you to your people.”

11 But Naomi replied, “Return home, my daughters. Why do you want to go with me? Am I able to have any more sons[k] who could become your husbands?(Q) 12 Return home, my daughters. Go on, for I am too old to have another husband. Even if I thought there was still hope for me to have a husband tonight and to bear sons, 13 would you be willing to wait for them to grow up? Would you restrain yourselves from remarrying?[l] No, my daughters, my life is much too bitter for you to share,[m] because the Lord’s hand has turned against me.”(R) 14 Again they wept loudly, and Orpah kissed her mother-in-law, but Ruth clung to her. 15 Naomi said, “Look, your sister-in-law has gone back to her people and to her god.[n](S) Follow your sister-in-law.”

16 But Ruth replied:

Do not persuade me to leave you
or go back and not follow you.
For wherever you go, I will go,
and wherever you live, I will live;
your people will be my people,
and your God will be my God.
17 Where you die, I will die,
and there I will be buried.
May Yahweh punish me,[o](T)
and do so severely,
if anything but death separates you and me.

18 When Naomi saw that Ruth was determined to go with her, she stopped trying to persuade her.

19 The two of them traveled until they came to Bethlehem. When they entered Bethlehem, the whole town was excited about their arrival[p](U) and the local women exclaimed, “Can this be Naomi?”

20 “Don’t call me Naomi. Call me Mara,”[q] she answered,[r] “for the Almighty(V) has made me very bitter.(W) 21 I went away full, but the Lord has brought me back empty.(X) Why do you call me Naomi, since the Lord has pronounced judgment on[s] me, and the Almighty has afflicted me?”

22 So Naomi came back from the land of Moab with her daughter-in-law Ruth the Moabitess. They arrived in Bethlehem at the beginning of the barley harvest.(Y)

John 4:4-42

He had to travel through Samaria,(A) so He came to a town of Samaria called Sychar near the property[a] that Jacob(B) had given his son Joseph.(C) Jacob’s well(D) was there, and Jesus, worn out from His journey, sat down at the well. It was about six in the evening.[b]

A woman of Samaria came to draw water.(E)

“Give Me a drink,” Jesus said to her, for His disciples had gone into town to buy food.

“How is it that You, a Jew,(F) ask for a drink from me, a Samaritan(G) woman?” she asked Him. For Jews do not associate with[c] Samaritans.[d]

10 Jesus answered, “If you knew the gift of God,(H) and who is saying to you, ‘Give Me a drink,’ you would ask Him, and He would give you living water.”(I)

11 “Sir,”(J) said the woman, “You don’t even have a bucket, and the well is deep. So where do You get this ‘living water’? 12 You aren’t greater than our father Jacob,(K) are You? He gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did his sons and livestock.”

13 Jesus said, “Everyone who drinks from this water will get thirsty again. 14 But whoever drinks from the water that I will give him will never get thirsty again—ever!(L) In fact, the water I will give him will become a well[e](M) of water springing up within him for eternal life.”(N)

15 “Sir,” the woman said to Him, “give me this water so I won’t get thirsty and come here to draw water.”

16 “Go call your husband,” He told her, “and come back here.”

17 “I don’t have a husband,” she answered.

“You have correctly said, ‘I don’t have a husband,’” Jesus said. 18 “For you’ve had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband. What you have said is true.”

19 “Sir,” the woman replied, “I see that You are a prophet. 20 Our fathers worshiped on this mountain,[f](O) yet you Jews say that the place to worship is in Jerusalem.”(P)

21 Jesus told her, “Believe Me, woman, an hour is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. 22 You Samaritans[g] worship what you do not know. We worship what we do know, because salvation is from the Jews.(Q) 23 But an hour is coming, and is now here,(R) when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth. Yes, the Father wants such people to worship Him. 24 God is spirit,(S) and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.”(T)

25 The woman said to Him, “I know that Messiah[h](U) is coming” (who is called Christ(V)). “When He comes, He will explain everything to us.”

26 “I am He,”(W) Jesus told her, “the One speaking to you.”

The Ripened Harvest

27 Just then His disciples arrived, and they were amazed that He was talking with a woman. Yet no one said, “What do You want?” or “Why are You talking with her?”

28 Then the woman left her water jar, went into town, and told the men, 29 “Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did! Could this be the Messiah?”(X) 30 They left the town and made their way to Him.(Y)

31 In the meantime the disciples kept urging Him, “Rabbi,(Z) eat something.”

32 But He said, “I have food to eat that you don’t know about.”

33 The disciples said to one another, “Could someone have brought Him something to eat?”

34 “My food is to do the will of Him(AA) who sent Me(AB) and to finish His work,”(AC) Jesus told them. 35 “Don’t you say, ‘There are still four more months, then comes the harvest’? Listen to what I’m telling you: Open[i] your eyes and look at the fields, for they are ready[j] for harvest. 36 The reaper is already receiving pay and gathering fruit for eternal life,(AD) so the sower and reaper can rejoice together. 37 For in this case the saying is true: ‘One sows and another reaps.’(AE) 38 I sent you to reap what you didn’t labor for; others have labored, and you have benefited from[k] their labor.”

The Savior of the World

39 Now many Samaritans(AF) from that town believed in Him because of what the woman said[l] when she testified,(AG) “He told me everything I ever did.” 40 Therefore, when the Samaritans came to Him,(AH) they asked Him to stay with them, and He stayed there two days. 41 Many more believed because of what He said.[m] 42 And they told the woman, “We no longer believe because of what you said, for we have heard for ourselves and know that this really is the Savior(AI) of the world.”[n]
